Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Musa Amadu returned to his office on Monday, but self-acclaimed president of the football family, Chris Giwa, refused to show up on the deadline date for Fifa’s suspension.
Fifa, in a letter dated September 3, ordered Giwa to stop parading himself as president of the NFF, else the country face automatic suspension in five days’ time until “Amodu is able to perform his work without interference”.
A suspension could have meant the African champions would miss Wednesday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier in South Africa, with the Confederation of African Football (Caf) insisting the punishment is tantamount to outright disqualification from the tournament.
“Right now, I am in the office meeting with management staff to work a way forward so that the secretariat can function properly and our progammes,” Amadu is quoted as saying on ColinUdoh.com.
“I hope it continues this way in the interest of peace in Nigerian football.”
World football’s governing body were understood to be monitoring closely, developments in the country’s football administrative clime as at Monday morning.
Amadu, who had spent the last two weeks in hiding, also stated that he would send a report to Fifa later on the deadline day.
“The first report will go out to Fifa at close of work today, but there will be a caveat for further reporting in case there is a change of circumstances.”
Fifa had in its recent letter reiterated it does not recognise the August 26 election which Giwa claimed brought him into office, ordering he along with his cohorts vacate office before 7:00 GMT on Monday.
It said the NFF Board, as it was on August 25, with Aminu Maigari as president, should hold two extraordinary general assemblies “as soon as possible”; first to elect members of the electoral committee and second to proceed with an elective congress.
Amadu added on BBC Sports: “The next step is to have an extra-ordinary assembly that will set a date for elections for the new executive committee.
“It is important to emphasise that this will not happen beyond 25 September, as directed by Fifa.”
