Former Germany skipper Michael Ballack believes Mario Goetze’s absence from the Wembley showpiece on Saturday is ‘a big loss,’ but predicts Borussia Dortmund can still stun tournament favourites, Bayern Munich in the finals. The 20- year- old Dortmund playmaker has been ruled out of the Wembley final against Bayern due to a hamstring injury. Incidentally, the attacking midfielder is due to join Dortmund’s Bundesliga rivals in the summer for a total sum of £37 million, after the Bavarians agreed to pay for the buy- out clause installed in the German international’s contract.
“It is not just about Goetze. Dortmund are dangerous for Bayern Munich,” Ballack told the BBC. Goteze is set to become the most expensive German player of all time when he completes his move to Munich. Ballack, who played for the Munich club between 2002- 2006, believes he is a rare talent in the Bundesliga. “The fact that Bayern signed him for so much money shows that he is maybe the greatest talent we have at the moment. “He is a big loss for Dortmund. Also, for the guy to reach his first final against his new club and then miss out, it’s a shame,” the former Bayern midfielder said. Ballack also thinks it will be a big risk for Bayern to write off Dortmund, who defeated the Bavarians 5-2 in the German Cup final last season without Goetze. “Dortmund had a few fantastic games without him against Bayern in the last few years. “They play as a team and will be strong.”
