Stonebwoy Shines @ Reggae Geel Festival

Stonebwoy

Celebrated dancehall artiste, Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, last Saturday staged a brilliant performance to entertain music fans at this year’s edition of the Reggae Geel Festival in Belgium.

Thousands of music fans graced the event, where Stonebwoy gave dynamic live performances that had the audience singing and dancing together.

Stonebwoy, who mounted the stage after music fans had witnessed performances from some of the artistes on the bill, was consistent and controlled the crowd.

He thrilled fans with most of his hit songs including ‘Ekelebe’, ‘Your Body’, ‘Activate’, among others, creating a distinctive atmosphere and solidifying his position as one of the leading voices in the reggae scene from Africa.

The peak of his performance was when he sang a rendition of the late Bob Marley’s ‘Buffalo Soldier’ hit song.

It was amazing how the dancehall artiste connected with the thousands of fans at the event, as they kept screaming for more after his performance on stage.

The mood at the venue became electric as the crowd sang along to every word, creating an unforgettable scene.

After his performance, legendary Jamaican reggae and dancehall icon, Luciano lauded Stonebwoy for his consistency in pushing the dancehall culture, and expressed his interest in collaborating with him. “You are hard working. I love your works, I want us to work on collaboration,” he said.

Stonebwoy’s musical prowess continues to garner global acclaim, evidenced by his recent dominance at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Awards, where he scooped up seven prestigious awards, including Artiste of the Year.

Harry Kane scores landmark goal as Tottenham sink Man City

0

Harry Kane became Tottenham’s all-time record scorer, surpassing the great Jimmy Greaves, as his 267th goal for the club dented Manchester City’s title ambitions at a raucous Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The England captain reached the landmark with a composed finish from 10 yards out after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg did exceptionally well to find Kane inside the box.

Fans jumped from their seats to applaud the 29-year-old striker, whose first Spurs goal came on 15 December 2011, while a message flashed up on the scoreboard inside the ground which read ‘Congratulations Harry Kane’.

The 15th-minute finish was also Kane’s 200th on the Premier League stage – only Alan Shearer (260 goals) and Wayne Rooney (208) have scored more.

It came against the run of play and with Spurs boss Antonio Conte recovering at home after surgery to remove his gallbladder.

Tottenham, who finished with 10 men after defender Cristian Romero was sent off in the 87th minute for two bookable offences, dug deep in their Italian manager’s absence to frustrate City.

Pep Guardiola’s side missed the chance to cut Arsenal’s five-point lead at the top of the table following the Gunners’ defeat at Everton on Saturday.

Riyad Mahrez went closest to equalising with an attempt which cannoned off the underside of the bar, but City are without a point – and a goal – in five visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

While they remain five points behind Arsenal having played one game more, Tottenham’s victory moves them one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle.

A symbol of corruption and oppression in modern Ghana

0

The English word “protocol” might seem harmless enough. According to the dictionary, it is defined as “a system of rules that explains the correct conduct and procedures to be followed in formal situations.” It represents order, fairness, and a structured approach to doing things.

However, in contemporary Ghana, the term “protocol” has taken on a much more sinister connotation, particularly in the context of recruiting applicants for schools and public service roles, including the police, the army, immigration, and internal revenue, among others.

The term protocol has become a byword for corruption, greed, nepotism, mediocrity, privilege, abuse of office, and an indirect form of oppression against the underprivileged and unconnected. This shameful practice must be eradicated.

For those unfamiliar with how this corrupt system operates, each recruitment cycle is marked by allocations set aside for politicians and influential individuals, often referred to as the “big men and women.” These individuals are then permitted to submit the names of their preferred candidates, who are

always given priority in the recruitment process. Consequently, these handpicked candidates significantly reduce the number of slots available for others to compete for.

For instance, if there are 100 vacancies in the police service and 20 are allocated to the “protocol list,” only 80 slots remain for which thousands of

Unconnected and underprivileged applicants, who are often more qualified than the protocol hires, must compete.

The consequences of this unfair practice are dire. It could lead to the hiring of less qualified individuals, filling our schools, services, and agencies with mediocre individuals at the expense of the better qualified.

This not only undermines the efficiency and effectiveness of these institutions but also perpetuates a cycle of incompetence and underperformance. The resultant mediocrity in public service can lead to inefficiency, incompetence, and a lack of innovation, which hinders national development.

This practice perpetuates an indirect form of oppression against the underprivileged and those without influential connections. It compromises the integrity of institutions and crushes the potential of many talented individuals.

More importantly, the use of “protocol hiring” in recruitment processes undermines the principles of equality and justice. Instead of providing a level playing field where the most qualified candidates are chosen, it reinforces social inequality and erodes public trust in essential institutions.

Young people, who should be the hope for the future, become disillusioned when they see that hard work and talent are not enough to succeed. This may discourage them from striving for excellence. Worse, a feeling that the playing field is not level may foster a culture of cynicism and apathy.

Any argument suggesting that qualified individuals are on the protocol list is weak. If these individuals are competent, they should compete with all the other applicants.

Addressing this issue requires a concerted effort from all levels of society. There must be a solid commitment to enforcing merit-based recruitment processes and holding those who engage in corrupt practices accountable.

Transparency and accountability should be prioritized to restore public confidence in our institutions. We cannot build a just and prosperous society on privilege and a lack of accountability.

Parliament must enact legislation to put an end to this corrupt practice immediately. Admittedly, many parliamentarians may also be complicit in this system. Nonetheless, they must act. By championing fairness and integrity, they can begin to justify their positions of power and privilege.

Charles Dickens opens his classic novel “A Tale of Two Cities” with the line, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” In the context of recruitment into government agencies in today’s Ghana, this sentiment rings painfully true. For some, it is indeed the best of times, as they benefit from an unjust system. For others, it is the worst of times, as they face insurmountable barriers due to their lack of connections.

Dickens used these words to describe the gross contradictions and injustices of his era, serving as a warning of the consequences to come. Let us heed this warning and strive to create a fairer and more just society.

Road Contractors Kick Against Govt Debt Restructuring Plans

0

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam

A group of Ghanaian road contractors has rejected the government’s plan to include them in a debt restructuring program, citing that they have not received any official communication from the government.

The Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, had announced that the government would be sending letters to private banks and contractors to whom it owes about $2.8 billion for a debt restructuring.

However, the National Chairman of the Ghana Road Contractors, John Afful, said that the group has not received any such letter and is therefore not aware of any plans to include them in the debt restructuring program.

“We haven’t been reached and I think what I have read was pertaining to the foreign contractors. We local contractors haven’t been approached and I don’t think we will be involved because the amount we are owed is far, far less than the $2.8 billion,” Afful said in an interview with JoyFM’s Newsnight.

Afful also stated that the group would not participate in any debt restructuring program even if they were included, citing that the government has owed them since 2016.

“Hopefully, we can’t participate because our debt has been there for a very long time- from 2016 to now. So, I don’t think it will be right for any party to do anything like that. It will be very much unfair to us,” he added.

This development comes after the government announced plans to restructure its debt to private banks and contractors.

The move is seen as an effort to alleviate the country’s debt burden, which has been a major concern for investors and economists.

However, the rejection by the Ghana Road Contractors raises questions about the government’s ability to successfully restructure its debt.

Church of Pentecost Chairman optimistic about swift passage of anti-gay bill

0

The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has expressed optimism in the Speaker and the Members of Parliament, anticipating a swift passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, publicly known as the anti-gay bill.

Despite setbacks faced in laying the bill for consideration a few days ago, with proponents alleging deliberate frustration by the Majority side in Parliament, Apostle Nyamekye expressed confidence in the bill’s success.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the commissioning of the Amigo Bread factory on the Accra-Tema Motorway, Apostle Nyamekye conveyed his belief in the legislative process for the bill to succeed.

“I even heard the Speaker say that we need to expedite action on the promulgation of the bill, and we are praying for him. As long as they keep pushing, I am sure they will be able to work on it, and it will succeed.”

Hundreds demonstrate in Tamale to demand reforms

0

Hundreds of residents in Tamale in the Northern region have joined the #fixthecountry conveners to demonstrate to demand constitutional reforms.

The protesters who are marching through the principal streets of Tamale want the 1992 Constitution reviewed.

This comes on the back of Ghana’s celebration of its 30 years of constitutional rule today.

The organizers who for the past weeks have been in the region met youth groups in some communities and have been collating signatures as part of a petition demanding reforms in the Constitution.

The demonstrators were clad in red and held placards with various inscriptions.

Some of the protesters who spoke to Citi News used the occasion to call on authorities to address other pertinent concerns of Ghana.

“I’m here in support of all of us, because we deserve a Ghana that works for everybody, and we deserve leaders that are going to lead us into success and prosperity. And I believe that we should hold them accountable. I also believe that people should take personal responsibility for their lives so that we can all smile as a nation,” one of the protesters, Ama Yankah said.

Another youth activist, Abdul Fataw, wants a new Constitution that will cater for the current and future needs of Ghanaians.

“We want to sound it very hard into the hearings of the leadership of the country that, the 1992 Constitution that was created to take care of Ghanaians for a very short period needs to be reviewed. I mean the true reflection of whatever was happening then has become outmoded.”

“We are currently agitating that the leadership of the nation should come up with a very new Constitution that will cater for the current and future needs. Lots of injustices happening, misappropriation of resources, we, the voiceless are crying that they should come out with a new Constitution to safeguard the rights of citizens,” he appealed.

Ransford Antwi to contest as an independent candidate

0

A Sunyani-based businessman, Ransford Antwi, has announced his intention to contest the 2024 Sunyani East parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

In a statement widely circulated and shared on his official Facebook page, 51-year-old Mr Antwi said he made the decision “after years, months, weeks, and days of attentive listening, intense engagements, and sober reflections.”

He said, “I’m left with no other choice than to say YES to the numerous calls and invitations, as well as my inner call, to contest as an independent candidate for the Sunyani East constituency”.

He said he saw the numerous appeals to contest as an invitation to join the masses in their collective battle to remove the albatross of underdevelopment that has been hanging around their necks for some years.

“We are simply embarking on a Sunyani East Project, inspired by the legacy of our forefathers, grandfathers/grandmothers, and I declare that I AM READY”.

He said he seeks no personal rewards or recompense in his decision to offer himself for the election.

“This is about the future of our constituency, and I pledge that l will not fail you in the discharge of my duties as an MP, should you elect me into office”.

Mr Antwi, known for his philanthropic work, said his cardinal objective is to sacrifice his innate gifts and resources for the betterment of the people in the constituency, and added that he possesses the passion, commitment, and competence necessary to excel in advancing the welfare of the constituents on whose shoulders he seeks to become a parliamentarian.

He expressed his gratitude for what he described as “overwhelming support and encouragement received from eminent personalities and the community at large”, and assured of serving the people with integrity and diligence.

“My track record as a founding member of the NPP and my good relationship with prominent members of the NDC is well documented. Alongside esteemed personalities like Nana Obiri Boahen and Mr Wilson Benneh (Now Drobo-Omanhene), we were the key communicators of the NPP in the 1990s in our Region”, the statement said.

He, however, admits that the task is not going to be easy but achievable if they work together to overcome every hurdle that stands against them in their forward march.

“I have the conviction that history is beckoning at us”, he stated and added that “the time has come for us to stand firm and challenge the forces that prevent our constituency, despite its outstanding contributions and commitment to the nation, from enjoying its fair share of the national cake”.

“While I recognize the financial might of the major parties I am up against, I am confident that my sense of patriotism, sound judgment, and selfless dedication will shine brighter than their resources”, he said, and therefore called on the people of Sunyani East to put the welfare and development of the constituency above party affiliations and join him in his noble endeavour to rescue the constituency.

Mr Antwi said though he is not resourced enough to afford to contest on the ticket of political parties, he appealed to NPP supporters who have been disappointed by bad leadership in the constituency, NDC supporters who are looking for a credible candidate who can wrestle power, and to all independent voters looking for a selfless candidate, to see him as the “credible partner”.

As a sports enthusiast and former CEO of B. A United, Ransford Antwi, the CEO of Sun City Radio and Hotel in Sunyani, was born in Area 2, a suburb of Sunyani.

As of now, Mr Antwi would have the incumbent NPP MP, Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, who is contesting for the 5th consecutive time, and NDC’s Seidu Mubarak to contend with in the December 7th parliamentary elections in the Sunyani East Constituency.

New Railway Engines Land February

0

The resuscitation of the railway system in the country will witness a major boost in mid-February with the arrival of twelve units of modern diesel train engines and vehicles from Poland.

The units, part of a comprehensive arrangement in the ongoing railway resuscitation project across the country, are expected to facilitate the activation of regional and long distance operations of the passenger and freight train system in the country.

An official of the Polish railway company charged with the task of producing the engines, Rynek Kolejowy, who broke the news, said the modern railways are expected in mid-February.

“They’re due to reach Ghana by mid-February,” he said, adding that they are already en route to Ghana.

He disclosed that the Ghana Railways Company Limited ordered the modern diesel engines “from Bydgoszcz to operate both regional and long-distance lines.”

The order was first confirmed September last year.

Continuing, the official said that “the first vehicle is already undergoing final tests at the factory in Bydgoszcz.”

The order, a major deal on the international railway scene, has already caught the attention of industry watchers who put out the information on the public space recently.

The contract is for “the supply of 12 Diesel multiple units, with 10 vehicles being an option for the ordering party. The vehicle is technically similar to the RegioFox vehicles that Bydgoszcz produces for Czech Railways.”

With the arrival of the engines and completion of some of the tracks coupled with the railway bridge over the Volta River at Mpakadan, a major feat would have been chalked by the government in the line of resuscitating a transportation system long dead, its aged tracks overgrown with weeds.

The Mpakadan segment of the railway system constitutes a backbone of the track system between Tema, through Yendi, Tamale and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The capital-intensive project is being undertaken under the aegis of the President Akufo-Addo established Ministry of Railways Development, which was established in February 2017.

The main frame of reference of the Ministry whose implementing agency is the Ghana Railway Company Limited is the rapid development of a modern rail network in Ghana.

It is expected that the modern railway system being envisaged will connect the major cities of Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi, and Tamale, ending in Burkina Faso.

It will also enhance the use of Ghana as the route for transporting goods from landlocked countries north of Ghana, such as Burkina Faso, to the ports of Tema and Takoradi, and also from the ports to the landlocked countries.

The transportation of the multiple minerals the country is endowed with, among them manganese, bauxite, and iron ore along the route of the existing railway’s network will be greatly enhanced when the railway system is fully operational, industry watchers have asserted.

Commercial and high grade iron ore deposits have already been offered some successful bidders who are on sight already undertaking further work to determine the quantity of the minerals among others, the viability of which has been ascertained following intensive geological sampling.

The recent completion of the Mpakadan railway bridge, the first of its kind in the country, will link the southern portions of the country to the north and Burkina Faso.

Both countries, Ghana and Burkina Faso, have showed keen interest in the railway project because of the inherent economic dividends.

The mid-February arrival of the modern railway engines and vehicles would have gone a long way in making the dream of the resuscitation of this steel track transportation system by President Akufo-Addo come true.

The current railway network in the country is made up of three lines: The Western Line, the Eastern Line, and the Central Line (from Huni Valley to Kotuku), all built during the colonial period.

Sources from the Railway Ministry indicate that “what is still operational is barely 13% of the approximately 947 kilometers of rail
that existed at independence in 1957. These lines are all narrow (Cape) gauge, single-track lines. What is left of it, is used for both freight and passenger traffic. Over the years, the track and rolling stock have all deteriorated, due to lack of maintenance.”

The Ghana Railway Master Plan, completed in 2013, is a guide for the fulfillment of the ministry’s mandate, the Railway Ministry stated in a document about the industry, adding “the Master Plan proposes a new railway network of 4,007.6 km with an investment of approximately US$21,507,920,000.00. All the new rail networks will be standard gauges. The Ghana Railway Master Plan envisages that the total rail network of 4,007.6 km is to be done in six phases.

“The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Railways Development, having reviewed the Ghana Railways Master Plan, has identified specific phases of the Master Plan as Priority Projects for the next few years. The proposed time frame for the execution of these Priority Projects is from July 2016 to June 2020.

“These Priority Projects are Phase 2 of the Master Plan and some railway lines in Phase 3 and Phase 5 of the Master Plan.
“This is as of 2013 and the figure has not been reviewed. Phase 2 covers approximately a total of 1234km. It involves the construction of the following: Takoradi – Kumasi (Western) Line, 339 km, (with a branch line from Dunkwa to Awaso). Accra – Kumasi (Eastern) Line (300 km).  The lines in Phase 3 that have been included in Priority Projects for the next four years are the following: Kumasi – Nyinahin Line (58 km), and Tamale – Yendi Line (102 km).”
The total length of the rail network identified as a Priority Project is 1394 kilometers, the company added.

Implementing these Priority Projects will create jobs and facilitate trade and industrial development and stimulate economic growth, it has been learnt.

NDC accepts EC’s promise to release updated voter register for scrutiny

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accepted the Electoral Commission’s (EC) promise to release the updated 2024 Provisional Voters Register to all political parties for scrutiny within one week.

This development follows the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Tuesday, October 1, where the NDC pushed for a forensic audit of the voter register.

The NDC also welcomed the EC’s decision to re-exhibit the updated Provisional Voters’ Register.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC recommended conducting the re-exhibition exercise both online and offline at exhibition centres.

Furthermore, the party demanded a multi-stakeholder and interparty examination of the Electoral Commission’s IT system.

“With this background, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC has deliberated and decided to accept the EC’s promise to release to political parties, the corrected/updated version of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register for scrutiny within one week.

“FEC further welcomes the decision by the Electoral Commission to re-exhibit the updated Provisional Voters’ Register. We however recommend that the re-exhibition exercise should be conducted online and offline at the exhibition centres.

“Additionally, the NDC demands a multi-stakeholder and interparty examination of the IT system of the Electoral Commission with the aim of addressing the vulnerabilities that the EC itself has admitted to, which vulnerabilities led to several of the anomalies we have raised. Clearly, the vulnerabilities in the IT system of the Electoral Commission can be exploited by criminals to compromise the integrity of the December 07, 2024 elections if not addressed.”

Following the Special Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) Meeting held today, Tuesday, 1st October 2024, to deliberate on the 2024 Provisional Voters Register, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress deems it fit to restate the following significant admissions by the Electoral Commission of Ghana:

* Illegal transfer of voters due to the lack of a liveliness test technology, as occured in Pusiga and other Constituencies,

* Erroneous addition of previous transfers to the current 2024 transfer list?

* Presence of corrupted files in the 2024 Provisional Voters’ Register, which the Commission claims have been rectified and restored,

* Deleted voters who the Commission wishes to place on a Missing Voters register, and

* A vulnerable EC IT system that is susceptible to data manipulation and infiltration from officials and non-officials of the Electoral Commission who have access to login credentials.

With this background, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC has deliberated and decided to accept the EC’s promise to release to political parties, the corrected/updated version of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register for scrutiny within one week.

In a now-viral video, a man is seen leaning on a ladder to kiss his bride as they were getting married.

The ladder was used in the video posted by @swagmotive so that the man could properly reach his wife and share the tender moment with her.

The man, however, is not actually short; instead, his wife is significantly taller than he is.

In the video, while the man and his tall wife were about to lock lips, his father-in-law pulled the funny stunt.

As soon as the man and his wife were pronounced husband and wife, his father-in-law rushed into the stage with a small ladder in his hand.

Everyone laughed happily as the man obediently climbed on the ladder and his height instantly increased, and he locked lips with his wife.

Nigel Gaisie Did Not Rape Me- Mzbel Again

0

Songstress Mzbel has once again denied allegations that she was raped by a popular man of God, Nigel Gaisie.

According to her, they never had any sexual encounter whatsoever.

In August 2020 actress Tracey Boakye in a social media banter with Mzbel alleged that the songstress was blackmailing Nigel to the tune of GHC50,000 over claims that he raped her. She added that Mzbel went to Nigel’s office in a nightgown.

In response, Mzbel alleged that Nigel took advantage of her but she won’t give details about what transpired between her and the prophet.

At the time she also indicated that some bigwigs in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) intervened in her issues with Nigel and as such they had put the matter to rest.

Addressing the issue again on UTV’s United on Saturday, she said nothing sexual occurred between them, adding that she doesn’t want to touch on that saga again.

“I’m not going to say anything, so I’m just going to take a chill pill, …please don’t push me to places I don’t want to go, it will bring up a lot of things,” she said when the issue came up for discussion.

“Something happened, and I wasn’t happy, I reported it to elders in the NDC, and they called us and spoke to us. It is not rape,” she added.

Keta (VR) Dec. 15, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Keta Municipality of the Volta region has engaged some communities in the upcoming District Level Elections.

The move was to inform the electorates of the rules and regulations regarding the upcoming exercise.

Madam Lina Bensah, the NCCE Director for Keta, in an engagement with residents of Kedzikope community, said the move was to give more education to the public on the basic principles of the exercise.

“We are teaching and equipping the communities to know that it is their civic responsibility to cast their votes freely during any organised EC election,” she stated.

She further stated that every registered eligible voter has the right to vote based on their conscience as well as choosing a candidate by secret balloting without any intimation or interference.

She said persons with disabilities could seek assistance from any Electoral officials to exercise their franchise easily.

Mry Raymond Siameh-Carr, the Keta Field Operations officer at NCCE, told the Ghana News Agency that their major challenge was means of transport “since the Commission cannot boast of a single vehicle for field works.

He said their outfit, under the numerous challenges, has visited communities such as Dzelukope, Vodza-Adzido, Kedzi, Mosques, schools, churches, and others for the needed education tour to create public awareness about the district-level elections.

Siameh-Carr further appealed to individuals, philanthropists, corporate organisations, and the government to provide vehicles and other materials to help speed up their activities.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) at Keta has pledged their readiness to hold the District-Level Elections in all the polling stations on Tuesday, December 19.

The Commission also called on the public to abide by the election rules for a successful and peaceful exercise.

A total of 81 assembly member aspirants consisting of 77 males and 4 females have been cleared to contest in the 22 Electoral Areas within Keta.

I lost money meant to support my school to Eurobond haircuts – Michael Blackson –

0

Comedian Michael Blackson has narrated how he lost funds that were intended to support his school after he invested in Ghana’s Eurobonds.

In an interview with comedian Kwaku Sintim-Misa, Blackson revealed how he planned to secure the school’s future through high-interest Ghanaian bonds.

“When I built the school, I tried to have a lifetime plan for the school. Because, let’s say, five years from now, I don’t want to tell jokes anymore. Then what will happen to the school?

“How can I make sure this thing lasts forever? So what I did was… that the difference between Ghana and America is that Ghana will give you a higher interest rate on your money.

“Because the Ghana bonds will give you a very high percentage. So I said to myself, ‘I’m going to invest money in my country and use that interest to manage the school forever’,” he said.

Despite warnings from his American bankers about the risks of investing in a developing country, Blackson remained confident in Ghana’s stability.

However, the unexpected Eurobond haircut left him without the returns he had counted on.

“I remember when I was sending the money little by little, my bankers in America were like, ‘Mike, this is a third world country. Are you sure you want to send your money?’

“I told them not to talk crap about my country. Because I know for a fact the only way a bond could go bad was through a civil war.

“And Ghana can’t have a civil war. We are too peaceful. We’re too loving. We’re not going to hurt each other. Nothing will happen. So I said, there’s no way my money could go wrong. And guess what? I was wrong.

“I did a Eurobonds thing and now… nothing,” he said.

Determined to keep the school operational, Blackson said he has turned to nonprofits and is planning on organizing fundraising events in the United States.

What happened to the EuroBonds

IN 2023, Ghana undertook a debt restructuring initiative, which included a reduction in the principal amount of its Eurobonds, aiming to alleviate $20 billion in external debt.

The government sought a 30 to 40 percent cut in principal and forgiveness of interest payments. Following the announcement, the value of Ghana’s sovereign dollar bonds fell sharply.

This restructuring aligned with IMF conditions to assist Ghana with its Balance of Payments, requiring $15 billion over three years.

Without effective debt management, Ghana risked financial strain on its reserves and currency.

The Eurobond haircut was part of Ghana’s strategy for economic relief, despite facing potential creditor resistance.

Yagbonwura bans Abu Jinapor from visiting Palaces on Gonjaland

0

The King of the Gonja kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Soale Jewu Soale, has banned the Member of Parliament for Damongo and Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, from visiting any palace in Gonjaland.

This comes after the youth of Gonjaland staged a protest against the MP, accusing him of disrespecting authorities.

In a video cited by Channel One News, Yagbonwura Soale Jewu Soale, speaking at the Jakpa Palace after the protest, described the lawmaker as a threat to peace and unity in Gonjaland.

The King, through his interpreter, enumerated several reasons for the ban, including Abu Jinapor’s alleged use of government power to circumvent traditional authority and evade accountability.

He stated that any chief who welcomed Abu Jinapor to their palace would face consequences.

Yagbonwura Soale Jewu Soale emphasised that he would not tolerate any further arrogance and disrespect from Abu Jinapor, stressing that he would deal with any chief who entertains him.

”Let me state this authoritatively that from today, no Chief in Gonjaland should allow Abu Jinapor to come by himself or lead or accompany any government official or politician to any palace in Gonjaland. Any Chief who disobeys this order will have himself to blame,” he said.

He added, “It is not a secret that Abu Jinapor uses the powers of government to circumvent the traditional authority and orders of the Yagbonwura in an attempt to evade accountability and to counter the orders so given by the Yagbonwura. This is mostly done deliberately to get the Yagbonwura to feel worthless, powerless and of no value in the eye of the public.”

“Enough of his arrogance and disrespect. I will deal with any Chief who will entertain him or in the company of any government official to his palace”.

Free SHS has created opportunities for 1.4m students

0

The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has lauded the government’s Free Senior High School policy, saying it has provided a window of opportunity for over 1.4 million students to attain a secondary school education.

Speaking at the formal launch of the National Service Scheme at 50 (NSS@50) at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Mr. Adutwum said he is proud to have been a part of the journey of the Free SHS thus far.

Mr. Adutwum celebrated the successes of the initiative, saying it has balanced out the ratio of boys to girls with secondary education in the last six years.

He also indicated that the government is currently on a drive to transform Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

He added that the various construction of educational facilities across the country is an indication of the government’s seriousness and commitment to transforming Ghana’s basic education system.

“Today, I am happy to note that from 830,000 students that were enrolled in our secondary schools, now we have 1.4 million of our youth enrolled in secondary schools,” Mr. Adutwum said. “I am happy to note that we are at a point where we have equal numbers of girls as boys in our senior high schools, something that nobody ever dreamt that an African country could achieve.

“TVET is undergoing transformation but I am so excited that he [President Akufo-Addo] has now turned his attention to the transformation of our basic school system.

“Schools that are under construction in many parts of the country are making a profound statement that public schools can do better and public schools are being transformed and TVET is going through transformation.”

NCCE disappointed over low women participation in DLEs

0

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo/Gilbert Tiroog Azeem

Bolgatanga, Dec. 17, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has expressed disappointment and concern over the low participation of women in the 2023 District Level Elections (DLEs) slated for December 19.

It said despite several efforts to promote women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes to bridge the gender gap and promote sustainable development, both at the national and local levels, the task of getting women to aspire for leadership positions remained a herculean challenge.

Mr Mawuli Agbenu, the Upper East Regional Director of the Commission who expressed these concerns in an interview with the Ghana News Agency was reacting to the small number of women aspirants in this year’s election in the region.

Statistics from the Electoral Commission (EC) revealed that no woman had filed to contest in this year’s election in three out of the 15 Municipal and District Assemblies across the region namely; Garu, Tempane and Nabdam.

Apart from that, despite a total of 949 people filing to contest in the District Assembly elections in the region, only 25 are women.

Similarly, only 156 women out of the 1,936 have filed to contest in the Unit Committee elections across the region.

This, the Regional Director stressed, was, “woeful and we don’t even know how many of them will win” but encouraged Ghanaians to vote for more women in the upcoming election to increase the representation of women in decision-making structure at the local level.

He indicated that the participation of women in the decision-making process was not only crucial to addressing the numerous challenges confronting the growth and progress of women and children but a necessary ingredient to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr Agbenu said apart from the financial burden which was compelling many women not to put themselves up for leadership positions, there were some sociocultural norms and barriers that needed to be removed to strengthen and empower women towards taking up leadership roles in governance.

“When women are not represented at the decision-making table, their concerns, and interests and that of their children are mostly not considered.

“Apart from that, more than half of the workforce of the informal sector in this country are women and if they are not involved in the decision-making, it means that their economic opportunities and interests are not being taken care of, forcing them to remain in poverty,” he lamented.

He said while the NCCE would continue to intensify education for more women’s participation in governance, the government needed to honour the 1992 Constitutional provision by appointing more women into governance.

Mr Joachim Elbazar, Nabdam District Director of the NCCE, told the GNA that women play a pivotal role in shaping families and society while contributing to the country`s economy, but their low participation in politics, particularly in the DLE, was defeating the advocacy for women’s empowerment.

“It is time women took the courage to contest for positions to lead and not see themselves as followers all the time because they can be better leaders as well, and I call on them to come out strongly in opportunities like this to make a case for themselves,” he stated.

Military Base Opens At Bui

A military officer briefing dignitaries about the FOB

THE BUI Power Authority (BPA) in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has established a military base near the Bui power generating plant to protect against imminent terrorists operating in the Sahel region and other illicit activities such as galamsay.

The Forward Operating Base (FOB), will house troops and other necessary military logistics needed to respond to threats from terrorist groups that, according to experts, are operating in the Sahel region.

It will also monitor illegal mining activities at a Dollar Power community in the Savanna Region and provide general security to the Banda District and surrounding communities.

Deputy Defence Minister, Kofi Amankwa Manu and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Bui Power Authority (BPA), Emmanuel Tandoh, assisted the Bono Regional Minister, Justina Awo Banahene, and the chief of Banda Traditional Council, to inaugurate the base.

The FOB boosts of facilities including administration block, guard house, mess and regulatory centre.

Others are a medical centre, observation post, training shed, car park, valley ball court, basket ball court, reefer, cold and ration store, Post Exchange shop and an engineering shop.

The rest are maintenance offices, guard houses, and armory among other critical military installations needed for quick military response.

Mr. Manu, said the government, over the last seven years has invested in the retooling and development of the GAF to respond to operational duties and the needs of troops.

“This base forms part of the government’s broader effort to establish military bases in and around the country to provide adequate security to the people and more importantly, protect strategic national assets and infrastructure like the Bui Power House and others,” he said.

“On the 26th of last month, another FOB was commissioned in the Obuase Municipality also with the support of Anglo Gold Ashanti Ghana, to protect the mine and give security to the area,” he said.

He praised ongoing collaborations between some state and private organizations to complement the government’s effort to equip the GAF to discharge its mandate of protecting the borders of the country and making it safer for the citizenry.

“I pledge the unflinching support to the BPA and stand ready to commit the GAF to the defence of this critical national asset,” he assured.

BPA CEO, Kofi Dzamesi in a speech read on his bahlaf, emphasized the need for the establishment of a military base near the Bui Power House.

He explained that the project is in two phases saying the first phase was started in April 2023 and completed in December 2023.

“Today’s official opening of the base represents a significant achievement for the BPA’s corporate social responsibility to enhance security, increase productivity generate local employment and stimulate economic growth in the Bui enclave,” he said.

Mr. Dzamesi said the project underscores the authority’s commitment to promoting law and order and protecting vital national assets.

Madam Justina Awo Banahene in her speech said the Banda District always witnesses significant developments which go a long way to improve the living standards of the people.

She, thus, appealed to the people to live in harmony with the soldiers and approach the BPA with their problems on issues affecting their lives due to the presence of the dam.

Three Charged with Procuring Drone for Alleged Al Shabaab Use

File Image of a DJI Matrice 200 V2

Beginning March 6, the Kahawa court will hear the defense of three Kenyans accused of importing a drone from South Africa for use by the Al Shabaab terror group in conducting its activities.

The Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) foiled the plans of the trio namely; Shueib Rashid Haji, Dekow Sheikh Abdirahman, and John Kibe Kahiga, on October 27 last year. They were arrested at an undisclosed location within the country and brought before the anti-terror court.

On November 30, 2023, the State charged them with eight counts of terror-related offenses and the acquisition of restricted goods, including a DJI Matrice drone from South Africa.

Shueib and Dekow each face three charges, which include conspiring to commit a terror attack, provision of property and services for the commission of a terrorist act, and soliciting and giving support for the commission of a terrorist act, all in violation of the Prevention of Terrorist Act.

On the other hand, Kibe is facing two charges: conspiring with others outside the Republic of Kenya to acquire restricted goods (specifically, a drone from the Republic of South Africa for the purposes of committing a terrorist act) and unloading unrestricted goods after importation.

Drone of Choice for Surveying

The DJI Matrice series stands out as the preferred drone for mapping, inspection, and surveying. This enterprise-level drone series by the Chinese technology company – DJI – offers a broad range of options and configurations concerning gimbals, cameras, durability, flight characteristics, and precision.

Dekow, who works at ASCC Logistics in Nairobi, and Kibe, a clearing and forwarding agent based at Lungalunga, are alleged to have aided Shueib, a resident of Hargadera Refugee camp, in clearing the consignment intended for delivery to Al Shabaab upon its arrival in the country.

On Tuesday, the three appeared in court for further directions, and the case was rescheduled to February 26 for another pre-trial mention, leading up to its hearing on March 6 and March 8 this year.

‘Allow Me To Leave…’ Ruto Asks Kenyans As He Jets Off to S.Korea For Multibillion Deals

0

President William Ruto flew to South Korea on Sunday evening, marking a return tour following an earlier State Visit in November 2022 at the invite of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

He announced his trip during an interdenominational church service in Kimilili, Bungoma, assuring the Kenyan public that this trip, coming shortly after his recent visit to the U.S., was necessary.

Ruto emphasized his commitment to prioritizing official duties over leisure travel, stating that his trip focuses on work, allaying public concerns about his frequent travels.

President Ruto explained that his official visit to South Korea aims to finalize and sign various agreements initiated during his November tour.

Ruto stated that he would witness the signing of three multibillion-shilling deals that would benefit the country.

“Today, I will be jetting to Korea for three issues. When I was there last year, we made some agreements, and now I am going to secure that money,” he said.

These agreements include a reported Kes.40 billion deal for the creative economy and a Kes.25 billion deal for equipment to construct irrigation dams.

“I agreed with the President of South Korea that we want to collaborate with our university in Athi River and one in South Korea. They have allocated us Kes.40 billion for young people in the creative economy. I will be going to receive those funds,” he said.

He added, “You saw I visited one of the largest creative economy hubs in America, and now we want to establish ours here.”

Another major agreement pertains to labor migration between the two countries.

“When we met with the South Korean president, we initiated plans to export our youth, and now we are going to sign an agreement to that effect,” he said, revealing that the agreement would see between 5,000 and 10,000 Kenyan youth travel to South Korea under a human capital export deal.

“I had to explain so that you don’t say ‘we had an agreement with this guy and he’s just idle’. So, please allow me to go for the sake of other Kenyans,” he said.

President Ruto’s itinerary also includes participation in the Korea-Africa Summit, where he will join 48 other heads of state and government.

Ajax reject West Ham’s €42m bid for Mohammed Kudus

Mohammed Kudus

Ajax have rejected West Ham United’s bid to sign Ghana international, Kudus Mohammed this summer.

The Premier League side on Tuesday made a second bid of €42 million for the 23-year-old attacker.

However, the fee was turned down immediately by the Dutch giants according to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano.

He adds that Ajax are demanding more for the promising attacker.

Though the offer was higher than the earlier fee Ajax agreed with Brighton and Hove Albion earlier in the transfer window, the Eredivisie side has intentions to accept the bid at the presented conditions.

Kudus is keen on a move away from Ajax this summer after enjoying a great season during the 2022/23 campaign.

West Ham were reported to be progressing in talks with the player’s entourage but an agreement between the two clubs is yet to be reached.

Kudus Mohammed scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in 42 appearances in all competitions for Ajax last season.

He also scored twice for Ghana in a 3-2 win against South Korea in the group stages of the World Cup in Qatar in November.

Joseph Paintsil to miss Ghana’s games against Mali and CAR

Ghana winger Joseph Paintsil Ghana winger Joseph Paintsil

Ghana winger Joseph Paintsil will miss the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

The Black Stars are set to face Mali at Stade du 26 Mars on June 6, followed by a home game against the Central African Republic at Baba Yara Stadium.

However, the 26-year-old Paintsil, who recently joined Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy, has sustained an injury that will sideline him until June.

LA Galaxy coach Greg Vanney, in a pre-game press conference ahead of their match against Houston Dynamo on Sunday, revealed that Paintsil was substituted after 52 minutes in Galaxy’s 2-2 draw with Minnesota on May 16 and did not play in the subsequent game against Charlotte FC on May 18.

Discussing Paintsil’s injury, Vanney mentioned the possibility of the winger returning for the June 2 matchup against the Chicago Fire.

“We’ll see how he progresses through the course of the week. He’s very questionable for Chicago. We’ll monitor his recovery this week. He’s played around 45 games since his European season started in August, so this is a good time for him to recover and prepare for the second half of the season,” Vanney said.

Since his move from Belgian side KRC Genk, Paintsil has scored four goals and provided four assists in 13 league games.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad for the upcoming fixtures soon.

Currently, Ghana sits fourth in Group I with three points and aims to revive their qualification hopes after a mixed start to their campaign.

The Black Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Madagascar but suffered an unexpected defeat against Comoros.

Giant Of Africa Can’t Power One Major City – Obi On Tanzania Shutting Down 5 Hydro Stations Over Excess Electricity On National Grid

0

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, says it’s saddening that Nigeria cannot boast of electricity to power even one of her major cities.

He expressed this as he noted that Tanzania has succeeded in powering all their major cities.

According to him, while a World Bank report showed that about 70 per cent of 40 million Tanzanians living in rural areas have received access to electricity, regrettably, Nigeria’s situation remained the opposite.

The statement comes amid a report that Tanzania, an East African nation, recently shut down five hydroelectric stations to reduce excess electricity in the national grid.

According to the report, their decision to shut down power stations came after production became enough to power their major cities and give electricity access to the rural dwellers.

Reacting via X on Friday, Obi said the government must sanitize and rescue the sector for the good of the nation.

“Yesterday, I read a report in the Media on how Tanzania, our East African fellow nation, recently shut down five hydroelectric stations to reduce excess electricity in the national grid.

“Their decision to shut down these power stations stemmed from the fact that their electricity production was already enough to power their major cities and give electricity access to the rural dwellers.

“In pain, I wondered how our nation, the giant of Africa, could not be able to power even one of the major cities, for example, the capital Abuja, while Tanzania has succeeded in powering all their major cities.

“A World Bank report showed how strong political will and commitment have been responsible for rapid electricity access in Tanzania which has seen electricity access move from 7% in 2011 to almost 40% (37.7%) in 2020, during which about 75% (73.2%) of urban dwellers gained access to electricity and about 25% (24.5%) of rural areas gained access to electricity.

“A similar report in June 2023 showed that about 70 per cent of 40 million Tanzanians living in rural areas have received access to electricity, signifying a monumental growth in the sector, while regrettably Nigeria’s situation remains the opposite.

“In Nigeria, 60% of our over 200 million people live without access to electricity, according to a 2022 Energy Progress Report.

“Considering the economic loss resulting from the lack of access to electricity in our nation, which remains immeasurable and with the recent electricity tariff increase, one would expect that we would be able, at least, to power one major city in each geo-political zone soon, and increase our overall access both in the urban and rural areas.

“The government must, therefore, sanitize and rescue the sector for the good of the nation.

“If Tanzania could achieve such a milestone in power generation, then Nigeria can do it even better, with competent and committed leadership.

“A stable power sector is very critical for the journey to a New Nigeria, to which we remain committed,” he posted.

VP Bawumia Donates GHC160,000 To Volta Dam Displaced Victims

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made a personal donation of GHC160,000 to victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage.

Several communities in eight Districts, mostly in the Volta Region, as well as the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions, have been displaced by the Dam spillage, and Dr. Bawumia made the donation to support the victims during his visit to some affected communities in the Volta Region on Wednesday October 17, 2023.

So far, the Government, through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Inter Ministerial Committee set up by President Akufo-Addo to manage the disaster, has responded by evacuating affected people to 20 holding centres, and also provided emergency relief items.

Dr. Bawumia’s personal donation, it was explained, is to complement the support government has so far offered to the victims.

While expressing his sympathies, the Vice President also assured victims that government is not only committed to providing emergency solutions, but also committed to providing relief to restore the livelihoods of those affected.

“When I look into the eyes of our mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers who are seated here, I see so much sadness. Their lives have been turned upside down as a result of what has happened,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“These are people who were going about their normal duties everyday to take care of themselves, but now they have to really depend on others for livelihood and I am saddened by that.”

“I want to assure that government will do everything possible to assist the affected people to provide relief and also restore the livelihood of those affected.
“We are not only looking at temporary relief, we are also looking at a more sustained support through the Inter Ministerial Committee, so that those affected can restore their livelihoods.”

Among the communities the Vice President visited were: New Bakpa in Central Tongu District as well as Sogakope and Sokpoe, both in the South Tongu District.

The Vice President was accompanied by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Volta Regional Minister Archibald Letsa and officials of NADMO and the VRA.

Majority Leader shoots down EC’s proposals for reforms for election 2024 –

0

Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has led Parliament in shooting down reform proposals from the Electoral Commission for the 2024 elections.

The Chairperson of the Commission Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensah has announced a number of reforms including closing polls at 3pm and doing away with the indelible ink.

On Tuesday in the District Level Elections, the Commission failed to deploy the indelible ink true to its decision.

Speaking in Parliament during approval of the budget of the EC, MP for Sagnerigu A.B Fuseini argued the move violates the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 CI 127 section 33 (2) C which makes it mandatory for every voter to be marked after voting.

He therefore called on the speaker to call the Chairperson of the EC to order.

MP for Buem Kofi Adams also slammed the EC for the mess created during yesterday’s elections arguing the exercise has been postponed twice already and thus the commission has no excuse to get it wrong.

Asawase MP and former Minority Chief whip Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak revealed the failure of the EC to listen to advice to decentralize the limited registration exercise has resulted in voters being placed at wrong Electoral Areas which made it impossible for them to vote yesterday in the district Level Elections.

He asked for the Commission to be called to order.

Deputy minority whip, Ibrahim Ahmed on his part accused the government of distributing items to influence voters in yesterday’s exercise.

The Banda MP, however, disclosed such government backed aspirants lost because the electorate refused to be bought.

Majority chief whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh questioned why the NDC MPs are linking failures of the EC to NPP Presidential Candidate and vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the EC is an independent institution and thus must be made to answer for its own actions.

Majority Leader in the strongest terms cautioned the reforms being proposed and implemented by the EC will be disastrous if allowed to stand.

This could be the reason why Erica withdrew her support from Mercy Eke, despite the love Mercy showed her during the Lockdown season.

Rev. Kusi Boateng Should Be Arrested, He Is Not Above The Law – MP |

0

Dr Clement, Member of Parliament for Builsa South, has responded to the criminal complaint filed against Rev. Kusi Boateng by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA).

The group has filed a criminal complaint against Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, also known as Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, and has requested that the Criminal Investigation Department look into him.

According to Dr Apaak, the man of God would have been arrested for these alleged charges in any serious democracy.

The group wants the man of God investigated for allegedly violating various provisions of the Criminal and Other Offenses Act 1960 (Act 29) specifically Sections 251, 215 and 132.

They claim that Rev. Kusi Boateng has allegedly engaged in crimes including deceiving a public officer, the deceit of a court by personation and defrauding by false pretences.

“We believe that the respondent perpetrated a criminal offence under Section 251 of Act 29 obtained two different passports from the State, two different driver’s licenses from the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority, two different tax identification numbers, two different voters ID cards by knowingly providing false and conflicting information to these public officers to obtain these documentations.”

In his response, Dr Apaak stated that the man of God is not above the law and should have been arrested for the alleged crimes.

He stated that he could not wrap his head around the ongoing situation because there is clear evidence that requires answers, and yet the one who blew the whistle on the alleged saga surrounding the man of God is the one being attacked.

He characterised the man of God as duplicitous and questioned why he had not been arrested, adding that this is a test case for the country, and Ghanaians are waiting to see what happens.

”Such a duplicitous character, two: mothers, days of birth, dates of birth, names, TIN numbers, passports, Ghana cards, still walks freely? Do security agencies need a prompt to arrest him? Is he above the law? This is a test case, we are watching.”

Ex-Konga CEO’s Death Not Suicide — Imudia Family

0

The family of the late former Chief Executive of popular online store, Konga, Nick Imudia, has refuted reports that he killed himself, stating that investigations have commenced to determine the cause of his death.

Recall that Imudia, who was until his death, the CEO of D.light International, reportedly died by suicide at his residence in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, also confirmed the incident to newsmen on Thursday.

Hundeyin said: “Yes, it is true. He allegedly committed the act on June 25. An investigation has commenced at the homicide section, SCID, Yaba.”

But in a statement obtained by the Leadership newspaper on Sunday, signed by Dr. Anthony N. Imudia on behalf of the family of the deceased, dismissed reports that Imudia had made farewell calls to his brother and daughter, leaving instructions before his passing, describing the claims as untrue.

The statement reads: “The family of Nick Imudia is unhappy with the unprofessional manner the media has wrongly characterised the reporting of Nick Imudia’s death as suicide.

“This is also supported by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police’s office that has vowed to investigate the sudden death of Nick.

“Neither did Nick call his brother in America with instructions on how to distribute his wealth, nor placed a call to his daughter with any instructions.

“How come the news was reported so hastily (less than 3 hours from his death) before his family members even knew about it and the medical team was still trying to resuscitate him at the hospital! The Imudia family wonders!

“Nick never showed any sign of stress and he was not diagnosed as depressed at any point. The thought of suicide in the manner portrayed and hastily reported by the news media is suspect.”

Speaking further, the family disclosed that Nick was a lively person, adding that his relatives are still in shock over thr report of his death.

The statement reads: “Nick was full of life and people that worked closely with him or met him in the last hours prior to the incident surrounding his death were shocked with the media attributing his death to ‘suicide’.

“At his prime age and the level of his achievements, people who knew Nick well are all shocked and do not accept the characterisation of his death as suicide.

“Members of Nick’s family do request the media and the general public to allow them to grief their loved one without any unfounded rumour of the circumstances surrounding his death.”

Mamprugu Protest Against Nana Addo In The North East Region |

0

Earlier today in Nalerigu in the capital of the North East Region, the youth of the region joined the 6th March parade in celebration of the 66th Independence day for our country.

In joining the celebration, the youth held placards with inscriptions such as Stop meddling in chieftaincy, I stand with Nayiri, Mamprugu over party politics, Mamprugu will remain long after you are gone among the many placards held during the celebrations.

These placards held by the youth of mamprugu are in opposition to the unnecessary interference and meddling into the chieftaincy conflict in Bawku over who has the legitimate right to occupy the Bawku skin by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo.

Bawku has been part of mamprugu traditionally and administratively since the 17th Century until the British divided it for ease of administration. The Nayiri has been always been the kingmaker of the Bawku skin as to who is the paramount chief of the Bawku Traditional Area.

The President and his government have decided to meddle in the chieftaincy matters in Bawku on several occasions by declaring that the Kusasi chief is the legitimate Bawku Naba, a position that the President has no power by virtue of the 1992 constitution to take.

The meddling reached a crescendo when the Nayiri enskinned a new Bawku Naa on the 15th February 2023 resulting in an arrest warrant for the arrest of the Nayiri, his king makers and the newly enskinned Bawku Naa.

This is what has resulted in the protest by the youth of mamprugu at the 6th March parade with the placards.

The message to the President was simple, stop meddling in chieftaincy affairs.

Sky Blues deny Robins in dramatic finish –

0

Ellis Simms scored a late equaliser but Coventry’s three-match winning run came to an end with a 2-2 draw against Bristol City.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s seventh goal of the season put the Sky Blues ahead with a rare foray forward in the first half before Rob Dickie equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Nahki Wells put the Robins ahead for the first time with a smart finish with seven minutes remaining but Simms was on hand to tap home an equaliser just two minutes later.

The visitors were without a win in four Championship outings but started the evening on the front foot when Jason Knight tested Brad Collins from distance inside the opening minutes.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman made his loan move from West Brom a permanent one earlier this month and Collins was forced into action once again to beat the midfielder’s swerving long-range effort to safety.

Coventry had barely threatened the Robins’ goal in the opening half an hour but when Sakamoto took the ball down inside the box and created an angle to squeeze his shot into the far corner, the Sky Blues had an unlikely lead.

It was a first half Bristol City had at the very least deserved to end on level terms and they did so through Dickie, who glanced a header in off the far post after a wicked ball in from Gardner-Hickman.

It was the second time this season the defender had scored against the Sky Blues after the former QPR man netted the winner against Mark Robins’ men back in October.

Both Coventry and Bristol City face replays if they are to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup, and both sides cancelled each other out during a quiet start to the second half.

A potential tie with Maidstone awaits Coventry if they beat Sheffield Wednesday, whilst Bristol City could host Manchester United if they beat Nottingham Forest.

Callum O’Hare flashed a shot wide for the Sky Blues before substitute Ross McCrorie blazed his effort over at the other end, while Dickie was inches away from poking the visitors ahead with 15 minutes to go.

Wells thought he had given Bristol City a fifth away win of the season when he latched onto a loose ball in the box and fired home his first goal since September.

But the hosts were back level when Max O’Leary spilled Liam Kitching’s piledriver into the path of Simms, who tapped home an immediate leveller.

Simms could have snatched all three points for Coventry after Milan van Ewijk’s tantalising cross flashed across the face of goal.

There was still a chance for Liam Manning’s men to earn all three points, but Collins’ smart reaction save preserved Coventry’s 10-match unbeaten run in the league as he denied Harry Cornick.

UN Raises Concerns Over Poverty Increase | Social

0

The United Nations (UN) has raised concerns about the alarming rate of poverty being experienced in many countries.

According to the UN, over a billion people are deprived of basic needs like food, water, health care, and education while billions more lack sanitation and access to energy, jobs, housing, and social safety nets.

This is coupled with conflicts, the climate crisis, discrimination, and exclusion, particularly against women and girls, which are deepening the distress.

The situation has caused barriers to achieving social justice and sustainable development aimed at alleviating poverty and empowering marginalized communities by the United Nations.

In commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a statement issued by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres stated that the crisis is compounded by an outdated, dysfunctional, and unfair global financial system that hinders developing countries from investing in alleviating poverty and achieving the SDGs.

Making projections that almost 500 million people will still be living in extreme poverty in 2030, adding, nearly 700 million people are scraping by, living on less than $2.15 per day

The statement further revealed that at the SDG Summit in September, world leaders recognized the need to reform the international financial architecture and committed to a bold plan to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals and accelerate efforts to eradicate poverty everywhere.

“This includes support for an SDG stimulus of at least $500 billion per year in financing for investments to achieve this,” he said.

The press statement indicated that the leaders also agreed on targeted action aimed at alleviating poverty and suffering for all people by transforming food and education systems, to decent jobs and expanding social protection, as this year’s theme highlights.

Meanwhile, this year’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is set for October 17, 2023.

“Nollywood is filled with an army of daughters of Jezebel looking for directors and producers to fall” Actor Charles Inojie reveals (Video)

0

Nollywood actor, Charles Inojie has expressed concern for the increasing rate at which many are entering into Nollywood.

The movie star, in an interview on the Honest Bunch Podcast, lamented over the rate at which upcoming actresses are using the industry as grounds for their businesses.

According to him, this set of people don’t have an interest in Nollywood but are only using the industry as an advert for other businesses.

Describing them as daughters of Jezebel, he stated that they are on the hunt for Nollywood directors and producers to fall. He noted how this set of people can do anything to be in front of the camera.

“Those set of people who pay movie producers to star in a movie, are only chasing after title. They just want to hold onto it as a side hustle, as many of them are into businesses. They just need a tag to Nollywood.

It came into a time in the industry when there was an influx, it was as if Devil opened gate for angels to come in. And these people aren’t looking to build a career, they just want something to hold and say they are actresses to further their business.

There are many daughters of Jezebel in Nollywood. They can do anything just to be in front of the camera. And when you meet a character that isn’t properly formed as a producer/director, you will fall.

There are daughters of Jezebel looking for movie producers/directors to fall”.

Taking to the comment section, many concurred with him as they noted how many are calling themselves actresses, but have rarely starred in movies.

One Lady Esty wrote, “That’s why actress full everywhere but na 5 we dey see for movies

One Desmond Alex wrote, “Where is the lie

One Peaceful Baddie wrote, “And where’s the lie? They are just there to advertise what their mama gave them

One Mheenarh wrote, “No lie told, Nollywood na just side hustle for most. Main hustle dey

One Omidan Mide wrote, “He isn’t even capping”.

Just days back, Kanayo Kanayo had also lamented over the state of things in the industry.

The veteran, in an interview with Afia Tv, stated that Nollywood shouldn’t be a ground for Brazilian Butt Life (BBL), sex workers, Instagram stars, and homosexuality.

Noting how the industry is a place for creativity, learning, and building one’s talents, he called out social media influencers, who are now taking over Nollywood, for being the biggest cause of disrespect in the industry, as he issued them a word of advice.

He, however, made it known that anyone is free to enter the film industry, but it should be based on talent.

Richard Sky’s lawyer welcomes Supreme Court’s decision

0

Paa Kwasi Abaidoo, the lawyer representing Richard Dela Sky, has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision permitting them to submit a new motion in their application before the Supreme Court.

They seek a declaration that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-gay bill, is null, void, and without legal effect.

Abaidoo expressed satisfaction with the apex court’s stance, noting that it enables them to file a fresh motion along with a supporting affidavit and statement of the case.

Speaking to Citi News after the court hearing, Mr Abaidoo stated: “In law, a motion cannot be derogated from the writ and the statement of claim. So, when one realises that his motion and affidavit in support are not intended with his writ of summons and statement of claim, he has an unfettered right to amend.

“If you don’t do that and the matter proceeds by the motion, you risk a very big chance and that is what we didn’t want to go through. So, to us, it was a proper review and the corrections were in order.”

The Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 8, adjourned Richard Sky’s application seeking a declaration that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-gay bill, is null, void, and of no effect to May 17, 2024.

The adjournment, as ruled by the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, is to enable counsel for the plaintiff to “file a fresh motion paper with supporting affidavit and statement of the case.”

5 things that happen during sex you shouldn’t be sorry for

0

During sex, things happen and they are absolutely normal, hence, there’s no need to be sorry for them.

While you might like a certain sex position, your partner might not. You might like to be experimental in bed, unlike your lover. And this is not something you have to feel apologetic for or say sorry for.

There is nothing wrong with having preferences in bed. You must break the habit of apologising for things during sex. Of course, if you end up using the wrong name of your partner, you should say sorry, but there are some things that you should never apologise about during sex

Here is a list of things that you should stop apologising about during sex:

  • How long or how quickly it takes to experience orgasm

Some take a few seconds, others might take even 10 minutes to reach orgasm, or may not even reach one. But that doesn’t mean something is wrong if you come quicker than your partner or take longer.

It’s not just words but also sounds that you hear during sex. It can be more than just grunting or any random sound. Vaginal farts or queefing can be common too! Again, it’s not something that you should apologise for.

  • Expressing if you don’t like something or want to avoid doing

Experimenting in bed is only good when both partners are in agreement. If there is something that you don’t like or don’t want to do, don’t say sorry. Just voice your opinion and don’t do it.

  • Asking for clarification on new things during sex

Your partner might be more experienced in bed than you, so if you have doubts about a specific sexual activity, simply ask and clarify rather than apologising for not knowing.

  • Wanting to spice up things

Doing the same thing in bed every single day can be boring. If you want to try something new, don’t feel sorry about breaking the monotony. In fact, if you are more forthright about it, you may end up making sex feel better and more exciting. So, a little bit of hair-pulling or role-playing is perfectly fine.

  • Wanting things that allow for comfort

Not everyone may be comfortable with sex with the lights on or without blankets. Everyone needs something that allows for comfort and helps to reduce their insecurities about body image. But one doesn’t have to feel apologetic about it.

Fisherfolks to have solar powered outboard motors—Bawumia

0

By Mildred Siabi-Mensah

Abuesi (WR), Sept. 30, GNA – The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia plans to introduce solar-powered outboard motors to fishers to halt the premix brouhaha.

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced this at Abuesi , a fishing community in the Shama constituency of the Western Region as part of his four days campaign tour of the Region.

He said “When you look at the premix problems, we have not addressed all of them. So, I have been thinking a lot and discussing how we are going to solve the problem permanently.”

“We will make these outboard motors available to the fishers and so they would not need to buy premix anymore. Once the sun is shining, their outboard motors would be powered, and they can go fishing.”

“Next month, we will start a whole new regime for fisherfolks because there is too much ‘kululu’ (fraud) in the premix matter,” he said.

Dr Bawumia has mentioned that his government would rely on solar generation of power to bring down the cost of electricity when given the nod as President.

Interacting with residents of Manso and Mpohor in the Western Region, Dr. Bawumia lamented the high cost of electricity for businesses and households.

He said “Government will prioritise solar energy, by generating about 2000 megawatts of it, which will significantly reduce the cost of electricity.

“I want Ghana to take the bold decision, which I am going to take by the Grace of God next year, to move Ghana away from a dependency on oil and gas for electricity to solar power, the sun, which God has given to us for free.”

Dr. Bawumia noted that his government would also prioritise the introduction of technology into agriculture, to help significantly improve upon farming.

Constitution Review Committee recommends President pays tax on salary

0

The Constitution Review Consultative Committee has recommended the scrapping of Article 68 (5) of the constitution to impose on the President a duty to pay tax on his salary and emoluments as an example to the rest of the citizenry.

The committee believes that the move will reflect the principle of equality before the law and accord with the rule of law.

During a stakeholder’s consultations for the possible review of the constitution, the former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Inusah Fuseini highlighted some recommendations of the committee, established by the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu in 2023.

“They say that it flouts equity rules, where the President receives money from the public purse and does not pay tax on his emoluments. They recommended an amendment to the Constitution to allow the President to pay tax on his earnings,” he explained.

The Committee established by the government has also proposed that the size of Parliament be capped.

The committee argues that there must be consequential amendments to Article 93 to ensure that Parliament consists of not more than 277 elected Members.

The committee believes that such a move would see consequential amendments to Article 47 to ensure that Ghana is divided into as many constituencies for the purpose of election of MPs as the Electoral Commission (EC) may prescribe how so but the number of constituencies shall not exceed 277.

The committee also recommended that the size of government be capped and the privilege to appoint Deputy Ministers be expunged.

It argues that the position of Regional Ministers should be abolished similar to Deputy Ministerial positions.

The committee said the President shall appoint as many Ministers of State as may be necessary for the efficient running of the state. However, the number of Ministers shall not exceed 25.

Strike: Prioritise unions’ concerns, work towards speedy resolution

0

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing strike in public universities led by the Senior Staff Association and the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, it implored the government of Ghana to prioritize the concerns raised by the unions and work towards a speedy resolution.

“Understanding the importance of dialogue, NUGS calls upon both the government and the unions to engage in immediate and constructive negotiations. While we respect the right of unions to advocate for their members, we emphasize the significant impact this strike has on the academic well-being of students across the country,” it added.

NUGS appealed to the unions to consider returning to their duties while negotiations continue.

“This temporary return to work would alleviate the burden on students and ensure that the dialogue process takes place without further hindrance,” it added.

NUGS also advocated for comprehensive stakeholder consultation involving government representatives, university management, and the concerned unions.

“A collaborative approach is vital in understanding the complexities of the issues and arriving at sustainable solutions that address the legitimate concerns of all parties involved,” it added.

NUGS said that it was committed to championing the rights and interests of students.

“We believe that through earnest dialogue and a commitment to finding common ground, a resolution that serves the best interests of both the unions and the students can be achieved,” it added.

Tottenham striker overtakes Jimmy Greaves as Spurs’

0

Harry Kane moved ahead of Jimmy Greaves to become Tottenham’s all-time top scorer by netting his 267th goal for the club as they beat Manchester City.

The 29-year-old England striker reached the landmark with a low finish which secured a 1-0 win and took him to 200 Premier League goals in 304 matches.

Greaves, who started his career at Chelsea, scored 266 goals in 379 games for Spurs between 1961 and 1970.

Kane, who made his Spurs debut in 2011, has played 415 times for the club.

Kane’s finish in Sunday’s encounter with City was typically coolly taken, fired in low after he had been set up by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the box.

The England captain is the third-highest scorer since the Premier League was created in 1992 – after Alan Shearer, with 260, and Wayne Rooney, with 208.

He has reached his double century of goals in the competition in fewer games than both, with Shearer taking 306 games and Rooney needing 462.

He has scored 17 league goals this season and 19 in total for Spurs – 11 more than the next-highest scorer for the club, Son Heung-min.

Kane is also just one goal away from becoming the leading all-time goalscorer for England. He is currently tied on 53 with Rooney.

“And she is further directed by the President to fully cooperate with the investigating authorities as they conduct their investigation.

“Furthermore, the President has tasked a panel that is headed by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance to, among other functions, conduct a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programmes to conclusively reform the relevant institutions and programmes in a determined bid to eliminate all institutional frailties for the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households and win back lost public confidence in the initiative.

“These directives of the President take immediate effect.”

Malala Claims Ichung’wa and Mbarire Orchestrated Impeachment Plan Against DP Gachagua

0

Cleophas Malala, recently removed as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General, has accused senior party officials of plotting to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a press conference on Thursday, Malala pointed to Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire as the key figures behind his ouster. He described his dismissal as “illegal” and claimed that Ichung’wa, Mbarire, and their associates first engineered his removal before turning their attention to impeaching Gachagua.

“This coup was orchestrated by senior party officials and their allies within the party secretariat,” Malala stated. “The key figures behind this plot are Mrs. Cecily Mbarire and Mr. Kimani Ichung’wa, MP for Kikuyu constituency.”

Malala asserted that his removal was not due to incompetence or mismanagement of the UDA party but was part of a well-orchestrated scheme aimed at culminating in the impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua.

He alleged that Ichung’wa and Mbarire resented his close relationship with Gachagua and President William Ruto. According to Malala, their goal was to remove him as an obstacle that could hinder their efforts to impeach Gachagua.

“My strong working relationship with the Deputy President, who is also the UDA deputy party leader, displeased them. When their attempts to set me against my Deputy Party Leader failed, they labeled me an obstacle to their plot and conspiracy,” he said.

Malala further claimed that Ichung’wa and Mbarire aimed to impeach Gachagua to position themselves strategically for political gains in the Mt. Kenya region for the 2027 and 2032 elections. He rejected any claims that President Ruto or opposition members were behind the push to remove Gachagua.

“Let it be clear that the planned impeachment of the Deputy President had nothing to do with President William Ruto or the broader government,” Malala emphasized.

“This impeachment is driven by personal ambitions for the 2027 and 2032 elections in the Mt. Kenya region, orchestrated by Mrs. Cecily Mbarire and Mr. Kimani Ichung’wa, who want to remove our Deputy President to enhance their positions in the evolving political landscape.”

NPP, NDC taking Ghanaians for a ride – Prof. Agyeman-Duah

The two most dominant political parties in the country

Former United Nations Governance Advisor, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, says the two major political parties, National Democratic Congress(NDC) and the New Patriotic Party(NPP) are taking Ghanaians for a ride.

According to him, their recent incendiary comments concerning the upcoming 2024 general elections shows their lack of viable solutions to help alleviate the current economic downturn threatening the nation’s stability.

He said, while it has become commonplace for political parties to throw about “bombastic” language during campaign periods, the current antics of the two major parties clearly prove they are not serious, and have no immediate solutions for the country.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he said, “I think our political parties or politicians; they’re taking Ghanaians for a ride. I believe so, they’re not serious.

“Look, this nation is facing very serious problems and I’m expecting those who want to lead this country to really begin to tell us exactly in terms of policies that they will initiate to arrest this deterioration in the national situation.

“So even for us to assemble tonight to discuss what certainly to me is a very very flimsy issue frankly is a waste of time. And if they don’t have any serious policies to discuss with Ghanaians they better give us peace and avoid these antics that they’ve started engaging in.”

His comments follow inflammatory statements made by Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong that the NPP would by whatever means ensure it does not hand over power to the NDC at the end of the 2024 general elections.

His statement has been widely condemned by civil society organisations and the opposition NDC; the latter has petitioned the IGP to arrest and interrogate the minister concerning his comments.

However, the NPP have defended the statements saying that they were merely in retaliation to the “do or die” comments made by former President and aspiring NDC flagbearer, John Mahama.

The ruling party has also since petitioned the IGP to arrest the former president and the NDC chairperson for also using incendiary comments concerning the 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has commended Parliament for approving the three revenue bills.

He said following the passage that the government looks to the conclusion of financing assurances from the external stakeholders regarding the deadly it is seeking to close with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In a tweet, the Ofoase Ayirebi lawmaker said “Commendations to@parliament_gh  for doing its part last night. We look to the conclusion of financing assurances from the external stakeholders so we can lock down the IMF board approval for the B.O.P. Support programme.”

Parliament by 137-136 majority decision passed the three revenue bills on Friday, March 31.

The bills are the Income Tax Amendment Bill, Excise Duty Amendment Bill, and Growth and Sustainability Amendment Bill.

The government is seeking to generate approximately GH¢4 billion per year to supplement domestic revenue.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta earlier appealed to Parliament to pass the three bills to help in facilitating the deal that Ghana is seeking under the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking at a forum in Accra on Thursday, March 30, he said “Our Parliament, in the national interest, will pass these bills before the close of the week and it will not be seen as disloyalty to anyone party. So if I may be permitted to use the word fellow Ghanaians,  we are a blessed nation…I am more convinced now than ever that we are a blessed nation.

“A week ago I was in China to meet their Finance Minister and various institutions about support for an IMF programme and the Lord certainly went ahead of us.

Osebo the Zaraman’s emotional message sparks concern among netizens –

0

Renowned Ghanaian fashion icon, Osebo the Zaraman, recently made a significant return to the online scene after a prolonged absence.

Contrary to his usual vibrant presence online, especially in his shop where he entertains fans while showcasing his goods, Osebo was captured in a recent video engaging in a morning devotion, unveiling a more introspective side of his personality.

During a poignant moment shared online, although his face remained unseen, Osebo was observed shedding tears while offering words of encouragement, declaring, “Take heart, everything will be alright.”

Speculation about Osebo’s health had been circulating for some time, with reports suggesting he had been battling a severe illness for several months. His close friend, Afia Schwarzenegger, had previously confirmed that he underwent surgery in Italy.

In a development seemingly confirming these rumors, Osebo appeared on Instagram Live, tearfully addressing his followers and offering words of solace and reassurance.

“I don’t know the hardships you are facing. I don’t know the challenges that have left you feeling hopeless. But I want you to know that God has not forsaken you. He loves you and works in mysterious ways. In due time, He will reveal His glory,” he affirmed emotionally.

Before Osebo’s recent circumstances unfolded, there had been several prophecies about attempts on his life. The Zara247 CEO had retreated from the public eye following the launch of his ‘Osebo Collection’ in January, attended by guests including Dr. Osei Kwame Despite and many others.

MPs Demand Action On Bawku Chief Enskinment

0

Some MPs from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have joined the government in condemning the alleged enskinment of a ri chief for Bawku at Nalerigu.

The lawmakers from the area said the development is not only illegal, but also attempts to exacerbate the insecurity in Bawku, and they urged the government to step up and deal with the situation.

The MPs are Mahama Ayariga of Bawku Central, Cletus Apul Avoka of Zebilla, Abanga Abdulai of Binduri, Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba of Pusiga, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba of Timpane and Albert Akuka Alalzuuga of Garu.

According to them, the purported enskinment of a ri chief for Bawku by the Nayiri, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah Il is “unacceptable and should not come from a person of his stature.”

“Such purported enskinment is null and void and will not be recognized by any institution under the 1992 Constitution. The Government of Ghana must take every step to ensure the maintenance of peace and security and hold perpetrators of this criminal act accountable,” they stressed at a press briefing in Parliament yesterday

The lawmakers also called on the people of the Kusaug Traditional Area and its environs to remain calm and assured them that “this unlawful conduct will not stand.”

“We are closely watching the level of political will of the Government of President Nana Akufo Addo and Vice President Alhaji Mamudu Bawumia in respecting the Constitution of Ghana and the right of the Kusasi people to rule over their own land,” they added.

For them, the Zugrana, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, who is the Bawku Naaba and President of the Kusaug Traditional Council remains the only recognized paramount chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area as recognized by law.

“The conduct of the Nayiri has the potential to aggravate the already precarious security situation in Bawku,” they insisted.

Government

Meanwhile, the government has condemned the “alleged enskinment of a new Bawku Naba,” saying it is illegal and a threat to national security.

“Government further re-iterates that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka I l is the Bawku Naba, duly gazetted and a member of the National and Upper East Regional Houses of Chiefs,” the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said in a statement.

He said the security agencies had been directed to arrest and prosecute any other person who holds himself out as a Bawku Naba.

“Further, any developments that have the potential to undermine the peace of Bawku will also be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with law,” he assured.

Eugene Osei-Tutu: Kumawu in perspective; a read down memory lane on by-elections in the 4th republic

0

By-elections have varied meanings. For this article, I will ascribe to this definition by the Collins Dictionary; a by-election is “A by-election is an election that is held to choose a new member of parliament when a member has resigned or died”.

Ghana in this republic, the 4th republic has experienced 30 by-elections. The 31st by-elections will happen on Tuesday, May 23 in the Kumawu constituency in the Ashanti region.

The NPP has won 50% of these by-elections. That is 15, the NDC has won 43% of them, that is 13%, the CPP winning 1 and the remaining going to an independent candidate.

In the 1st parliament of the 4th republic, spanning from 1993 to 1996 there were 4 by-elections (The NPP boycotted the parliamentary election in 1992);

  1. New Edubiase (1993) NDC
  2. Wenchi East(1995) NDC
  3. Tano South (1995) NDC
  4. Navrongo Central (1995) Independent
  • The Independent Candidate who won the Navrongo Central seat is the late John Setuni Achuliwor. He died in a ghastly accident in January 2003. He was then serving as the first NPP MP for the Navrongo central constituency between 2000-2003 before he passed on.

In the 2nd parliament of the 4th republic, from (1997- 2000.), 2 by-elections happened.

  1. Lambussie (1999) NDC
  2. Ablekuma Central (1999) NPP
  • The Lambussie by-election was won by a then 37-year-old teacher, Alice Teni Boon. He defeated NPP’s Bie Ketting. Hon. Boon replaced the late Luke Koo who was an NDC MP. Madam Teni Boom went on to serve in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th parliaments.
  • The Ablekuma Central by-election was occasioned after the death of Clement Samuel Crabbe. The by-election was won by Victor Okuley Nortey for the NPP.

In the 3rd parliament of this republic, Ghana experienced 7 by-elections. (2001-2004)

  1. Kumawu (2002) NPP (the death of Reo Basoah)
  2. Bimbilla (2002) NPP
  3. Wulensi (2003) NPP
  4. Navrongo Central (2003) NPP
  5. Gomoa East (2003) NPP
  6. Amenfi West (2003) NPP
  7. Upper Denkyira (2004) NPP
  • Interestingly, the NPP won all 7 by-elections in the 3rd parliament of the 4th republic.
  • In the Amenfi-West by-elections, the seat became vacant following the resignation of the NDC parliamentarian, Abraham Asante.
  • The seat was flipped by the NPP in the by-elections and Agnes Sonful became the MP.
  • For the Bimbila by-elections, the seat became vacant following the elevation of Mohammed Ibn Chambas as Executive Secretary of ECOWAS. That occasioned the by-elections. It was the elections that introduced the current Defense minister, Dominic Aduna Bingab Nitiwul to the political scene. He was 22 years old at that time.

In the 4th parliament (2005-2008), we had 6 by-elections.

  1. Asawase (2005) NDC
  2. Odododiodio (2005) NDC
  3. Offinso South (2006) NPP
  4. Tamale central (2006) NDC
  5. Fomena (2007) NPP
  6. Nkoranza North (2007) NPP
  • Muntaka Mubarak first entered the Parliament of Ghana in 2005 when he won the by-election in the Asawase constituency replacing the late Dr. Gibril Adamu.
  • In the Odododiodio by-election held on 30 August 2005, Jonathan Nii Tackie Komey of the NDC won to replace Samuel Nii Ayi Mankattah also of the NDC who had died earlier.
  • In Offinso South, Dr. Owusu Achaw Duah won the by-elections to replace the late Kwabena Safo. In the 5th parliament ( 2009- 2012), 3 by-elections were occasioned.
  1. Chereponi (2009) NDC
  2. Jirapa (2009) NDC
  3. Atiwa (2010) NPP
  • two of them, Chereponi and Talensi are remembered for their notorious acts of violence and vandalism. People were shot at and several people were maimed.
  • In the Chereponi by-elections, it was held on 29th September 2009, to elect a new MP for the constituency to replace the late Doris Seidu, who passed away in August 2009 after a protracted illness. The seat was held by an NPP MP but was snatched by the NDC’s Samuel Jabanyite. That was partly why that by-election was a bloodbath.
  • The Atiwa by-election is the election now President, Akufo-Addo said “wo Atiwa, ye kyere omo adi kakraa bi, to wit, “At Atiwa, we showed them just something little”. It was a litmus test for the base of the party going into the 2012 elections.
  • That was another keenly contested battle in our political history. Very similar to the showings witnessed in Chereponi. Many political observers believe the NPP used Atiwa to settle the scores with the NDC because of the events of Chereponi. The sitting MP, Kwasi Ankama died. That by-election was won by the current roads ministers and now MP for Atiwa West, Hon. Kwesi Amoako-Atta.

In the 6th parliament (2013-2016), there were 7 by-elections.

  1. Akatsi South (2013) NDC
  2. Buem (2013) NDC
  3. Kumbungu (2013) CPP
  4. Talensi (2015) NDC
  5. Amenfi West (2015) NDC
  6. Abuakwa North (2016) NPP
  7. Abetifi (2016) NPP
  • In the Kumbungu by-elections, the seat became vacant as a result of the resignation of the former MP and running mate of Late Professor Mills, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni to take up the position of General Secretary in the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States. The New PatrioticParty (NPP) boycotted the poll. The CPP flipped the seat and it was won by Mr Amadu Yahya beating NDC’s Alhaji Imoro Yakuku Kpagu.
  • The Talensi Constituency seat became vacant following the resignation of the former NPP MP, Mr Robert Naachinaab Musuore after he was enskinned Chief of the Tongo Traditional Area. Benson Tongo (B.T) Baba won the Talensi bye-election for the NDC. In this election, the violence unleashed
was of a monstrous level, sadly, in the full glare of the police.

In the last parliament, the 7th parliament, we had 1.

  1. The infamous Ayawaso West Wuogon (2019)
  • The by-election was necessitated by the death of the MP for the area, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko. Her wife contested on the ticket of the NPP and won. She is Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan.
  • The conduct of the polls was marred by a shooting incident at the residence of one of the aspirants, Mr Brempong the NDC candidate which resulted in injuries to 18 persons and an assault on an observer at one of the polling stations. The events culminated in a Commission of Inquiry led by Justice Emile Short.

So from 1st January 1993 to 31st December 2022, Ghana has experienced 30 by-elections with the NPP winning 15 of them, the NDC winning 13, the CPP winning 1 and an independent candidate winning 1. The by-election of Kumawu makes it the 31st in the 4th republic which is interestingly 31 years old. Also, the Kumawu constituency (2002, 2023) has joined the Amenfi West (2003, 2015) Navrongo Central (1995, 2003) constituencies to be the only 3 constituencies to have experienced 2 by-elections in this
republic.

Local Gov’t Service Set To Create Client Service Units In All MMDAs – Dr. Ato Arthur  |

0

Head of Local Government Service, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur says public service exists because of the need for mobilization and allocation of resources and to provide goods and services that would not have been produced by the private sector.

He mentioned the public service is financed through taxes and is publicly accountable and that in  service delivery, the public administration engages with clients, citizens, residents, enterprises among others who seek to handle their affairs and affords staff the opportunity to fulfill their mandate duties, that is why the need to create a client service units in all the 16 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies(MMDAs) in the country to aid pressure on the assemblies.

Dr. Ato Arthur observed that the levels of satisfaction of services rendered are mostly reflected in complaints, enquiries and feedback received through various channels at the institutions of the service and the client service unit in place serves as an interface between the local government service (LGS) and those who transact business with the service to manage interactions and meet their expectations.

He made the remarks at a two days workshop for MMDCEs from central and western region on the Ghana secondary cities support program (GSCSP) and management on the newly developed Local government service (LGS) client service at Elmina a suburb community in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem Municipality (KEEA) of the Central Region.

“The Ghana secondary cities support program has the objective to support selected Municipal Assemblies (secondary cities) to become better city managers in providing urban services and has targeted strengthening client service units as strong institutions for citizens’ engagement and grievance redress,” he stressed.

He emphasized that a functional client service system helps in transparency and accountability which will help to protect the reputation of the client and citizens in general and also to identify positive organizational changes to improve service delivery, saying “unfortunately our current client service system is plagued with challenges”.

“The provision of information timeously to citizens will erase any shred of suspicion and doubt, engender confidence of citizens in the respective local government (Assembly) and promote collaboration between citizens and duty bearers in the developmental agenda,” he added.

Dr. Ato Arthur revealed the client service unit plays a pivotal role in every organization as it is the first point of call for clients, hence it is imperative to streamline the processes and procedures involved in its management to propel the service to the realization of the vision of a world class decentralized and client oriented service.

“Local governance is evolving. Citizens have become more discerning and demand accountability from duty bearers. This calls for a professional, motivated client service to readily receive requests and grievances, dispatch them to the appropriate department/unit and send feedback to clients within the set timelines. Citizens want to know why streetlights are not working, where and how to access building permits, where to pay property rates, etc. Thus, a functional client service can be an enabler in our quest for improvement in revenue generation. These make the client service units essential in the administrative set-up,” Dr Arthur stated.

He therefore reiterate that the office of the head of the local government service will continue to train its staff in the various classes to equip them with new knowledge to give off their best in the delivery of their mandate.

UK Court Jails 18-Year-Old Ghanaian For Pouring Boiling Water On Friend, Stabbing Her Over Boyfriend | Social

0

An 18-year-old Ghanaian woman, Princess Owusu Ansah, has been sentenced to three years in prison by a UK court for a violent attack on her friend. Princess is said to have poured boiling water over her friend and stabbed her, allegedly in response to cheating allegations involving her boyfriend.

The distressing episode unfolded when a video clip captured by Owusu Ansah on her mobile phone went viral on Snapchat. The footage depicted the victim cowering under a duvet, screaming in agony as Owusu Ansah threw a kettle of boiling water over her.

Moments prior to the assault, Owusu Ansah is heard accusing her friend of engaging in relationships with other people’s partners and acting as though she could escape the consequences. After delivering a series of punches, she proceeded to pick up a silver knife, striking it against a radiator before stabbing her victim in the leg.

The attack took place on February 2, 2023, at the victim’s residence in the Dog Kennel Estate, Dulwich. Eventually managing to escape, the injured woman fled into the street and was later treated at Kings College Hospital for non-life-threatening stab wounds.

Members of the public who had seen the disturbing video on Snapchat promptly alerted the Metropolitan Police. In March, Owusu Ansah, hailing from Royston, pleaded guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm and criminal damage during her appearance at Inner London Crown Court.

On May 9, during her subsequent court appearance, Owusu Ansah received a three-year prison sentence for the heinous assault.

Residents of Shama express mixed reaction about Mr Alan Kyerematen decision

0

Inchaban (W/R), Sept 27, GNA – Scores of residents in the Shama District of the Western Region have expressed concern about the decision of Mr Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen to resign from

the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and contest as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections.

Mr Kyerematen announced the decision of his forfeiture as a long-standing member of NPP after he officially resigned from the party, citing the unfair treatment and assault perpetrated against his followers and his person as the reason to breakaway.

In an interview with the GNA, some of the residents noted that the decision would have dire consequences on the performance of NPP in the 2024 general election since Mr Kyerematen was a party stalwart and commanded a lot of respect and support in the Ashanti Region.

Mr Mensah, a resident of Inchaban and Madam Cecilia a resident of Shama, both appealed to the NPP party hierarchy, to as a matter of urgency, embark on reconciliation moves with Mr Kyerematen to avert any election related misfortunes.

They explained that since Mr Kyeremanten hailed from the Ashanti Region, which is a strong hold of the NPP, his resignation from the party to contest as an independent candidate would undoubtedly impact negatively on the chances of NPP to retain power come December 2024.

However, other residents were in jubilant mood after hearing Mr Kyerematen had resigned to contest as independent presidential candidate, stressing that the decision was long overdue and that it was a step in the right direction as the country needed new direction in its economy growth.

According to them, they needed someone who would offer them selfless and inclusive leadership as well as enhance economic growth in the country, noting that Mr Kyerematen has the potential to move the country to a higher level.

The residents welcomed the decision by Mr Kyerematen as it would create an opportunity for NDC, “the main opposition to come back to power to save the country from economic quagmire due to mismanagement, unbridled corruption and reckless borrowing as well as extravagant lifestyle of NPP.

Mr. Kwaku Essuon, a resident of Assorko –Essaman, was happy about Mr Kyerematen’s resignation would further deepen the woes and division in the NPP, which would weaken its front to prevent the party from winning the general elections due to the “nepotic governance offered to Ghanaians in the past seven years.”

Others, however, contended that Mr Kyerematen’s breakaway from NPP would not pose any danger to its chances in the general elections since the allegiance of many supporters of the party remained unchanged.

While others expressed the view that Mr Kyerematen could not bring any needed economic changes to help wean the citizenry from the current difficulties, since he was from the NPP which had created the socioeconomic hardship that was currently confronting Ghanaians.

Domestic food price inflation remains high around the world – World Bank report

0

The World Bank Report on the response to rising food insecurity has indicated that domestic food price inflation remains high around the world.

Information from the latest month between January 2023 and April 2023 for which food price inflation data are available shows high inflation in most low- and middle-income countries, with inflation higher than 5% in 64.7% of low-income countries, 81.4% of lower-middle-income countries, and 84% of upper-middle-income countries and many experiencing double-digit inflation; 78.6% of high-income countries are experiencing high food price inflation.

The most-affected countries are in Africa, North America, Latin America, South Asia, Europe, and Central Asia.

The agricultural, cereal, and export price indices closed 1%, 4%, and 1% higher, respectively, than two weeks ago. Maize, wheat, and rice prices all increased in the last two weeks, with prices closing 2%, 7%, and 4% higher, respectively. On a year-on-year basis, maize and wheat prices are 22% and 41% lower, respectively, while rice prices are 14% higher. Maize prices are 15% higher than in January 2021, while wheat and rice prices are at the same level. (See “pink sheet” data for agricultural commodity and food commodity prices indices, updated monthly.)

The May 2023 edition of the AMIS Market Monitor highlights that, after three consecutive years of La Niña, which brought bumper crops for some countries and crop failures for others, it is likely that the world is heading into an El Niño pattern, with a 62% chance of development during May to July, a 75% chance between June and August, and an 80% chance during the rest of the year. If El Niño materializes, depending on its strength, average to above-average rain could occur in Central Asia, southern North America, southeast South America, southern Europe, eastern and southern East Africa, and southern and eastern China. Drier-than-average conditions could occur in Central America, the Caribbean, parts of western and northern East Africa, northern South America, southern Africa, India, Northern China, and Australia. In general, El Niño will affect agricultural production on more than 25% of global cropland, slightly increasing global mean soybean yields and slightly decreasing global mean maize, rice, and wheat yields.

The 2023 edition of the Global Report on Food Crises, an annual report from the Global Network Against Food Crises, provides regional summaries of food crises that occurred in 2022. Globally, the number of people in GRFC countries and territories facing acute food insecurity increased to 257.8 million in 2022 from 192.8 million in 2021 and has more than doubled since 2016, albeit with data coming from a larger group of countries.

The percentage of the analyzed population in IPC/CH Phase 3 or above or equivalent has also increased each year, doubling from 11.3% in 2016 to 22.7% in 2022. The causes of this increase are complex and interlinked, with conflicts, national and global economic shocks, and weather extremes acting as interrelated, mutually reinforcing drivers of acute food insecurity and hunger. Of these primary drivers, conflict and insecurity remain the most important, with the GRFC indicating that, by the end of 2022, there were an estimated 53.2 million internally displaced people, mainly displaced by conflict, in 25 food-crisis countries.

The World Food Programme (WFP) reported that up to 19 million Sudanese (41% of the population) were struggling to find one meal per day, up from 15 million last year. It is likely that the violence in Sudan will have large impacts on regional food insecurity, with roughly 100,000 people having fled to neighboring countries in recent weeks. This could rise to as many as 800,000 as the conflict continues. Before the conflict, food insecurity was projected to worsen in Sudan, with most of the population in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) concentrated near the borders with neighboring countries.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, trade-related policies imposed by countries have surged. The global food crisis has been partially made worse by the growing number of food trade restrictions put in place by countries with a goal of increasing domestic supply and reducing prices. As of March 13, 2023, 21 countries have implemented 27 food export bans, and 10 have implemented 14 export-limiting measures.

Security guard arrested for allegedly killing businesswoman who hired him a month ago

0

The police in the Ashanti region have arrested a security guard for allegedly killing a businesswoman, barely a month after he was employed.

The shocking incident has left the communities of Ampeyoo and Ampabame, both suburbs of Kumasi in the Ashanti region, in a state of disbelief and grief.

The victim, known as Afua Ahenkan or Princess Afua, reportedly suffered multiple stab wounds at the hands of the young man she had hired through an agency just a month ago.

The assailant reportedly launched his attack on the deceased while she was engaged in a phone call. Her desperate cries for help raised the suspicions of the person on the other end of the line, prompting them to rush to her home after repeated, unanswered calls.

The suspect bolted with Ahenkan’s car, money, and personal belongings.

The Ashanti Central Regional Police Command dispatched investigators to the crime scene after a report was made.

A manhunt was subsequently initiated to locate the suspect, while Afua’s body was taken to the morgue at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where it awaits an autopsy.

A police source confirmed to CitiNewsroom.com that the suspect was arrested at his hideout on the outskirts of Kumasi. The alleged perpetrator is presently in police custody and is expected to be transported to Kumasi to assist police investigation.

Ghana Hemophilia Society marks World Haemophilia Day on April 17

0

The look on her face was priceless; shock, disbelief and grief mixed with relief as her eyes glistened with tears.

“So, I’m not a witch after all, I did not kill my sons” …. And she kept repeating those words. Why didn’t anyone tell her this earlier, but alas better late than never? A cloud of darkness has been lifted off her head and finally an answer to the musings of her heart. She is a single mother of 3 healthy girls but unfortunately, the son her husband craved so much had eluded her. She had just been told by the doctor that her deceased sons, four sons who were very healthy at birth, had died from post-circumcision bleeding caused by haemophilia; a disease that literally means “loves to bleed”.

Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder where an individual’s blood does not clot properly due to a lack of sufficient blood-clotting proteins (clotting factor) which help to stop bleeding. Affected individuals can bleed spontaneously or bleed excessively following an injury or surgery. Its origins predate the Talmud era, where the third son of a woman who had lost two previous sons from post-circumcision bleeding was spared from the procedure. In modern times, Hemophilia has featured prominently in European royalty and thus is sometimes known as ‘the royal disease’. Queen Victoria passed the mutation for haemophilia B to her son Leopold and, through two of her daughters, Alice and Beatrice, to various royals across the continent, including the royal families of Spain, Germany, and Russia.

The Science of the Disorder

Hemophilia is a genetic disorder meaning the condition is mostly inherited. There are two main types of hemophilia; hemophilia A and hemophilia B and affected persons have low levels of clotting factors VIII and XI respectively. The disease is caused by a mutation in a gene which sits on the X chromosome. Males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY) and females have two X chromosomes (XX). Hence males are affected when they inherit an affected X chromosome from their mothers. The disease consequently affects more males than females, as males have only one X chromosome. A female carrying the defect on one of her X chromosomes may not be affected by it. A mother who is a carrier has a 50% chance of passing the faulty X chromosome to her daughter, while an affected father will always pass on the affected gene to his daughters. A son cannot inherit the defective gene from his father. Although haemophilia commonly runs in families, for 1 in every 3 patients seen, the individual may be the first one in the family to be affected with a change in the gene that codes for the clotting factor.

Incidence of the disorder

Hemophilia affects all races and ethnic groups with an occurrence of 1 in every 10,000 births. Worldwide, about 400,000 people are living with the disease and in Ghana we have over 500 patients identified and diagnosed in our registry. However, based on the estimated prevalence based on our population numbers,

there could be over 3000 people living with haemophilia in Ghana meaning that we have yet to identify over two thousand potential patients to be diagnosed and offered comprehensive care.

Patients with this disease commonly present with bleeds in joints and muscles causing swellings, pain and tightness. They have easy bruising, nose bleeds, gum bleeds and bleeds are difficult to control after losing a tooth. They may even present with blood in their stools and urine, post-vaccination bleeds as well as life-threatening bleeding in the head, chest or abdomen.

The earliest symptoms that could point to this diagnosis could be cord bleed, scalp bleeds and most importantly post circumcision bleed. Post-circumcision bleed has been the bane of most marriages as couples lose their sons from excessive bleeding after the procedure.

Gene therapy, which is supposed to be the panacea to the treatment of this disorder, has reached advanced stages and yet to be rolled out worldwide.

Medication

The best way to treat haemophilia is to replace the missing clotting factor so that the blood can clot properly. Currently in Ghana, two comprehensive Hemophilia treatment centres have been established in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Korle-bu Teaching Hospital where patients are offered comprehensive care to improve their overall quality of life. These centers were established with the support of the Ghana Hemophilia Society (GHS), a non-profit organization founded by a parent Mr. Martin Boakye in 2009. GHS educates, trains health workers and advocates for people living with hemophilia and the society has gained its recognition and membership from the World Federation of Hemophilia, Canada. Through the support of WFH, GHS also benefits from the humanitarian aid program where the society receives these expensive clotting factors for Ghanaian patients living with haemophilia at no cost to the patients. On the average, over $3 million dollars of donations are received every year from the world body to the society on behalf of the patients.

Essential Support from Government

Majority of the patients however cannot afford the laboratory investigations required in the diagnosis and management of this disease. Like most chronic diseases, mothers of children with haemophilia are left to shoulder the burden of all the required laboratory investigations by themselves and the peculiarities in the mode of inheritance even worsens this situation as fathers blame the mothers for the condition with some shirking their responsibilities towards their affected children.

In recent times, the society has stepped up efforts to get the government to give the patients of haemophilia equal attention in medical care. I am glad to note that this advocacy has reached an advanced stage to get hemophilia care unto the National health insurance scheme. When it is done these patients will benefit from:

  1. Laboratory diagnosis: screening and coagulation (assays) analysis

b. Procurement of essential drugs to augment the existing inflow of donations

These have been the bane of many potential patients who, for lack of funds, refuse even to get screened and therefore do not get factor treatment.

The World Hemophilia Day

World Hemophilia Day is an international observance day held on the 17th of April every year by the WORLD Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) and its affiliate National Member Organizations (NMOs). This year, the theme is ‘Equitable access for all”. It is a call to help increase awareness of the inherited bleeding disorders including hemophilia and to make adequate care accessible to every patient who needs it in the various communities. With WFH shouldering a bigger portion of the responsibility involved in the management of haemophilia, the government of Ghana could also consider adding haemophilia to the diseases under NHIS to not only lighten the burdens of affected families but also to help close the gap in the care of these patients.

“We are doing tours to the regions, not necessarily finishing every region before moving to another, but it is just a step and jump,” he said.

Mr Konadu Apraku, in a write-up, said the most critical issue of concern to him was to restore macroeconomic stability, ensure reliable exchange rate and stability of the local currency.

“To do so, I will review immediately current Government expenditures, thus reducing the structure of Government, including cutting down the Government machinery,” he emphasised.

Mr Kofi Konadu Apraku

Mr Ghartey said his campaign was on course, stressing that, he was unperturbed by the support other aspirants had received from some leading members of the Party.

“I’m going to spend my time thinking about what would happen if, by God’s grace, 2025, I’m sworn in as President of Ghana. I’m going to spend my time thinking about the fact that teacher’s son from nowhere has become President.

“I’m going to think about the hope it will give to the millions of people who come from homes such as mine,” Mr Ghartey said. .

Mr Joe Ghartey

The NPP is expected to hold a special delegates conference with 900 delegates to trim down the number of candidates to five, ahead of its National Congress on November 4, provided the committee approves more than four of the ten candidates to contest for the position.

We’ll not listen to anymore promises should we resume picketing

0

The Pensioner Bondholders Forum has hinted at another intended picketing from May 29 at the Finance Ministry to demand the payment of matured coupons.

According to the group, the Finance Ministry is yet to pay matured coupons on May 15th and subsequent maturities.

Members of the Forum suspended its picketing on May 12 after it had a meeting with the Finance Ministry to have all outstanding coupons paid.

However, after weeks of waiting to engage with the Finance Ministry to draw a payment roadmap, the Pensioner Bondholders say nothing has been heard.

Speaking to Citi News, Convener of the Pensioner Bondholders Forum, Dr. Adu Anane Antwi said members of the group will be back at the Finance Ministry beginning 29th May.

“For the principal, the government wanted us to meet again on it and decide on how the government was going to pay so based on that, we decided to suspend the picketing and give the government the time to do the payment and the government started paying the coupons, but it paid up to May 8 and left the May 15 payment behind even though the agreement was that the government will pay us up to the May 15.

“We wrote to government on the delayed payment, and we proposed that we should reach a decision by Friday, but we didn’t hear anything from the government.  If government doesn’t pay the coupons on time this time around, when we resume the picketing, we are not going to listen to anything, we are not going to listen to any promises, we are not going to listen to any assurances.”

Beige Bank CEO Never Received Nor Stole Funds Belonging To The Bank – Investigator Tells Court  |

0

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Abednego Atsah, the investigator in the ongoing trial involving Michael Nyinaku, the founder of the defunct Beige Bank, has told the Accra High Court that his investigation does not reveal that the accused received or stole monies in person per the charges levelled against him.

ASP Atsah, the 5th Prosecution Witness (PW5) said, “it is correct” that throughout his investigation, he did not find anything showing the accused person was ever paid monies directly according to the records available to him.

The investigator made this known to the Financial and Economic Division of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, a Justice of the Court of Appeal sitting as an additional High Court judge, during cross-examinations on July 28, August 1st and August 2nd 2023 respectively by defence lawyers led by Lawyer Thaddeus Sory.

Of the 43 charges levelled against the accused, nine border on stealing, 25 on fraudulent breach of trust and another nine on money laundering.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

ASP Joseph Atsah admitted that in all the nine charges which border on stealing, not a pesewa of the funds in question were disbursed to the accused in his personal capacity and neither was any evidence found that the accused benefited directly from those funds.

However, the charges of stealing were preferred against the accused simply based on the fact that he was a shareholder or director to all the companies to whom the funds were advanced, ASP Atsah disclosed.

In his evidence-in-chief as contained in his witness statement that has been adopted by the court, his testimony is expected to corroborate the Prosecution’s charges that have been leveled against Mr. Michael Nyineku.

Highlights of Cross Examination on Count 1

Throughout all your investigations, did you find out if any of the funds transferred to Alberry (a company of which the accused is a Director) was ever paid to the accused person directly?” , Lawyer Sory asked the investigator.

In his response, ASP Atsah, said; “No my lady, there was no record or evidence of any funds being disbursed to the accused in his personal capacity  however our investigations revealed that the accused was a shareholder of Alberry Ltd, the entity that received the funds.”

It was the case of Mr Sorry that, under Count One of the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have stolen an amount of GH¢5,240,000 described as the property of the Beige Bank which he (accused) caused it to be transferred to a related company called Alberry Company Limited.

Mr Sory further said; “If one is a Director or shareholder of a company, it does not mean monies paid to that company on account of transactions it has had with a third party can be said to have been stolen by a Director or shareholder of that recipient company.”

ASP Atsah, in his response said, “Per the assertion of counsel, that is correct.”

Again, the witness confirmed that reviewing the bank statements of Alberry Ltd together with the underlying payment vouchers, there was no evidence that any payment of funds was ever made by Alberry to the accused.

There are 20 clubs in the Premier League. During the course of a season (from August to May) each club plays the others twice (a double round-robin system), once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents, for 38 games.

Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position.

Cassava products effect on human health

0

Cassava is a staple food consumed by many Ghanaians and Africans. This food gained its popularity due to the high demand of it by the local people and its numerous use. Cassava can be used for chips, biscuits, gari, fufu, cassava dough and others. All the above mentioned benefits are derived from cassava, a common local popular plant or food. Since the use of this plant for food, there have been so many controversies about its effects on human health. Most people think because it has so much starch in it, the product can lead to diabetes and hypertension, which is not true. All these allegations have no scientific basis. It is just some lies that have been told for long to become the truth. Even most cassava products have positive effects on the health of human.

Cassava products prevent prostate disorders. According Prof. Nakoutey Obu, there is a vitamin in cassava, which is callec Vitamin B17. This vitamin is responsible for the protection of the prostate from any disorder. This special vitamin which is in cassava makes all the products made from it safe, nutritious and medicinal. Do not fall gullible to the lies that, cassava products aggravates hypertension and diabetes so it is not good to be consumed by diabetics. Go on and consume to protect yourself from such disorders.

ECG boss Samuel Mahama resigns for ‘personal reasons’

0

Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has resigned.

Information available to JoyNews indicates that he resigned over personal reasons.

President Akufo-Addo appointed Mr Mahama in May 2022.

This followed the statutory retirement of the outgoing Managing Director, Kwame Agyeman-Budu.

Kojo Bonsu refutes claims that Mahama is corrupt

0

The former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) boss, Kojo Bonsu, has replied to allegations that he referred to former president John Dramani Mahama as corrupt.

In 2022, there were publications by some news portals claiming that Kojo Bonsu had called Mahama a corrupt president.

In the publications, it was alleged that “former President John Mahama does not stand a chance as far as winning the 2024 general elections is concerned because his opponents in the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have sullied his name with corruption and women’s affairs to the extent that he has become unattractive to the floating voter.”

This, according to the news sources, was said by the former KMA boss, who aspires to be the flagbearer of the NDC.

But Kojo Bonsu has denied saying that about John Mahama.

On Prime Morning on Wednesday, he told Roselyn Felli that the publication was a plot to destroy his relationship with the former President.

According to him, “I wasn’t misquoted. I think some people put it on. I checked; it was a Peace FM portal that brought that, and it was fake news. It just wanted to create some kind of confusion between me and the former President, but they cannot achieve it.”

Meanwhile, he believes Mahama is hardworking and commends him for the work he did during his regime. He applauded the ex-President for achieving the majority of the party’s aims during his tenure in office.

“He is one of the best that Ghana has ever had,” he said.

But as to why he is contesting for the position despite mentioning Mahama’s capabilities, Kojo Bonsu indicated that Mahama only had four years to run as president, which he thinks would not be sufficient for the NDC to achieve their development goals.

He explained further that “it is democracy that has allowed that.”

However, as a flagbearer aspirant for the NDC, Mr. Bonsu is confident in his ability to do better for the country if elected president.

Having said that, he is positive of winning the NDC primaries and becoming the flagbearer in 2024.

He has, however, stated his willingness to assist the party in winning the election even if he loses the primaries.

SHS heads in Eastern Region reject food shortage claims

0

The Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools in the New Juaben Zone in the Eastern Region have vehemently refuted claims of a shortage of food items in Senior High Schools within the municipality.

Contrary to reports circulating on traditional and social media, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) categorically debunked these allegations, asserting that there is an ample supply of food items.

Recently, some parents voiced concerns over alleged food shortages in Koforidua, the regional capital, as well as in the New Juaben North and South Municipalities of the Eastern Region, suggesting that students were facing difficulties in accessing adequate meals.

However, during a visit to New Juaben Senior High School, which serves as a storage facility for the New Juaben Zone, Citi News observed an abundant supply of essential food items such as rice, sugar, oil, boxes of mackerel, and tin tomato paste.

Currently, the distribution of food items to schools is effectively managed by the National Food Buffer Stock Company and the Commodity Exchange.

In an interview with Citi News, John Hulkson Arthur, the Zonal Chairman of CHASS and Headmaster of Oti Boateng Senior High School, firmly dismissed the claims, assuring that headmasters would promptly raise concerns if their stock of provisions were depleted and not replenished accordingly.

He emphasized that headmasters would promptly raise concerns if their stocks ran out and were not replenished.

Mark Ofori Frimpong, the Headmaster of New Juaben Senior High School, also expressed surprise about the news.

Police Nab Eight Over Murder Of Six Officers In Delta

Police Release Identities Of Officers Abducted, Killed In Delta

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), on Saturday disclosed it has arrested eight suspects in connection with the murder of its officers in the Ughelli area of Delta State.

In January, gunmen abducted three mobile police officers who were responding to a distress call, at the Ohoro community in Ughelli North LGA of the State.

Shortly after the incident, some police officers mobilised to rescue their abducted colleagues, were ambushed and killed around the Ohoro forest in the same LGA.

Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, had confirmed that six police officers were slain in the incident, adding that the bodies had been recovered while the search for another six was ongoing.

On the development, Adejobi said police operatives have arrested eight suspected criminals involved in the murder of the officers.

According to him, five of the suspected murderers were initially apprehended, while another three were arrested later at different locations.

“The arrested suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this reprehensible act, and many alike, are brought to justice swiftly and decisively.

“The police assure that the suspects will soon have their day in court, with credible evidence, once investigations are concluded.

“The Nigerian police is deeply saddened by the heinous act of violence against our officers who were diligently performing their duty to protect and serve the community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time.

“We wish to reiterate that killers of our officers in this extant case, and many others, have murdered peace, and none of them will go unpunished,” Adejobi said.

Napo is being targeted because of his kindness – Top journalist

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Some people in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’, the Energy Minister, because of his immense popularity in the ruling political party, a top journalist has alleged.

Wontumi Radio and Movement TV’s Kwaku Dawuro, who spilled the beans, said Napo’s unique kindness has made him the toast of NPP members and supporters across the country.

According to him, scores of NPP members love Napo because he is accessible, extremely kind, and always available to offer a helping hand to his party members and even non-NPP members.

However, Kwaku Dawuro said Napo’s ever increasing popularity in the NPP seems to be creating discomfort for someone ‘wicked’ people in the party, who have developed strong hatred for him without reason.

“Napo is loved by most of the NPP members because of his kindness. There are reports of Napo assisting party people who approach him for support in times of need.

“This kind nature of Napo has made him very popular in the party so some jealous people in the NPP, who hate him without justification, have started diabolical acts to pull him down but it won’t work.

“I haven’t met Napo in person before, but his amazing kindness and good works are all over the place, and we are all proud of him”, Kwaku Dawuro stated on his show on Movement TV.

As a reminder, the Daily Guide newspaper, owned by former NPP National Chairman, Freddie Blay, recently published a false story with the sole intention of denting Napo’s positive image.

Interestingly, the paper has admitted that its reportage about Napo was false and concocted to dent his image. The Daily Guide newspaper has since apologized and retracted the hoax story with another publication.

Kwaku Dawuro said that aside from being kind-hearted and accessible, Napo has also marketed himself well with his outstanding performances in this current NPP administration.

“Without Napo, there is no way that the NPP government could have implemented the free Senior High School (SHS) policy. He has also stopped the power crisis, popularly called ‘Dumsor’,” he remarked and praised Napo.

The top broadcast journalist said the opposition NDC are also afraid of Napo because he is bold and efficient, adding “the naysayers in the NPP should let Napo have his peace and sustain his good works for mother Ghana”.

Search on for Kamala Harris’ grandfather’s house in Zambia – Report

0

US Vice-President Kamala Harris’ wish to visit the house where she once lived with her grandfather in the 1960s has led to a search for the property, the UK’s Times newspaper reports.

Ms Harris, who is on a nine-day trip to three African countries, is due to visit Zambia over the weekend – the latest of 18 top American officials who have visited the continent since January this year.

She was in Zambia as a child visiting her grandfather VP Gopalan, an Indian civil servant who was posted there to help settle refugees after it gained independence.

The US embassy in Lusaka is quoted by The Times as having appealed to the public for help locating Mr Gopalan’s former home while seeking to retrace Ms Harris’ “childhood connections with the country”.

The trip to Africa is expected to strengthen the US’ partnerships throughout the continent on “security and economic prosperity”, according to a statement by her office.

Will Naana Jane make history as the first female vice-president?

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang

GhanaWeb Feature by: Joycelun Kyei-Baffuor

Women empowerment has been identified as one of the best and surest ways that Africa can turn around the narrative of poverty and disease.

Although the terrain is tough, several women have managed to secure the second most powerful seat in national governance – the vice-presidential slot.

Interestingly, the first African woman in this role was appointed by Yahya Jammeh in 1997 – Isatou Njie-Saidy.

As of August 2017, Africa could boast of three female vice-presidents. All three countries incidentally have ‘ia’ at the end of their names: The Gambia (West Africa), Zambia (Southern Africa), and Tanzania (East Africa).

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s inclusion on the vice-presidential ticket in the 2024 general elections not only signifies inclusivity but also has the potential to inspire more women to pursue political leadership in Ghana. Her academic background and experience as a former Minister of Education add to her credibility, and if elected, her success would align Ghana with other African countries that have embraced female leadership at the highest levels.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has described his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as an accomplished woman who will contribute to turning the fortunes of Ghana around. Speaking at a recent campaign tour of the Upper East Region in Bolgatanga, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emphasized that Professor Opoku-Agyemang was picked as running mate because she was the most qualified and her credibility unblemished.

He urged Ghanaians to make history on December 7 by electing the first female Vice President of the country, adding that the decision would inspire Ghanaian girls and young women to aspire to reach the highest position in the country.

“Our women in Ghana have occupied every important position in the land. They have been Chief Justices, Directors of prisons, Speakers of Parliament, Attorneys General, Ministers, and many other roles, but the only positions women have not occupied are the two highest positions in the land, namely, vice president and president.

“Today, by the grace of God, history is about to be made. For the first time in the history of Ghana, I am convinced that on December 7, we will have a female vice president-elect, and one day a woman will be president of this country,” he said.

This trend is not new in Africa, as several countries have already broken the glass ceiling by appointing and electing women to the office of vice presidency.

The first African woman in this role was appointed by Yahya Jammeh in 1997 – Isatou Njie-Saidy. As of August 2017, Africa could boast of three female vice-presidents in The Gambia (West Africa), Zambia (Southern Africa), and Tanzania (East Africa).

Aja Fatoumata C.M. Jallow-Tambajang, a Gambian politician and activist, also served as Vice President of The Gambia and Minister of Women’s Affairs from February 2017 to June 2018 under President Adama Barrow. The 67-year-old is a pro-democracy activist who is credited as one of the key brains behind the formation of the coalition that toppled her former boss.

In Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan served as vice president from 2015 to 2021, from which she ascended to the presidency following the death of her predecessor, John Magufuli. As president, Suluhu has implemented democratic reforms, reversing the policies of her predecessor that were implemented to repress political opposition. She also implemented policies to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Tanzania, which Magufuli had denied was a serious issue. Other focuses of her presidency have included the expansion of infrastructure and the globalization of the Tanzanian economy through investors and tourism.

Inonge Mutukwa Wina also served as the 13th vice president of Zambia from 2021 to 2025 after being a legislator on two occasions, holding ministerial positions, and being the leader of the ruling Patriotic Front party.

Consequently, Aja Fatoumata C.M. Jallow-Tambajang, a Gambian politician and activist, served as Vice President of The Gambia and Minister of Women’s Affairs from February 2017 to June 2018 under President Adama Barrow. The trend suggests a growing acceptance and encouragement of women in high-level politics.

These women have made significant contributions to their countries by implementing democratic reforms and expanding infrastructure.

If Prof. Naana Jane is elected, it will place Ghana alongside these African countries and potentially inspire a new generation of women leaders in the country.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was not forced to resign

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye, has refuted speculations suggesting that the former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, was forced to resign.

Following a National Council meeting on Friday, February 23, Nana Boakye clarified in an interview with journalists that the Suame MP willingly stepped down and was not compelled by any external pressure.

“He was not ousted. You notice that he voluntarily stepped down from his position. Now he is taking another important position. Now he is the Chairman of NPP’s manifesto committee. And again, he will still be the minister in charge of parliamentary affairs.

“So, for us, that is okay. It’s a new mandate. I mean, change is good. We have consensus building on this particular matter and he’s still there,” he said.

The National Council of the New Patriotic Party, in its meeting, affirmed the new leadership of the majority caucus in Parliament.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MP for Effutu, is set to assume the role of Majority Leader from Friday, February 23. This significant leadership transition aligns with recent interpretations of parliamentary procedures and corresponds with the Speaker’s recent ruling on the selection process.

The confirmation of the leadership changes transpired during a meeting led by the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong.

Members of the Majority Caucus participated in the discussions, deliberating on recommendations from the National Executive Committee (NEC) regarding the leadership reshuffle.

Minority demands update from police on missing biometric devices

0

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over seven missing biometric device, urging the police to as a matter of urgency take action.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, the Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson stated the devices were deployed by the Electoral Commission(EC) ahead of its limited voter registration exercise.

“The Electoral Commission confirms that seven of the biometric devices are indeed missing. I urge the CID and the Ghana Police Service to immediately issue a statement giving us the details of their investigation so far,” he said.

However, the devices are nowhere to be found and may have consequences on the upcoming December 7 election.

“I am concerned and worried because those devices in the hands of an unknown person can compromise the future elections that Ghana will have.

“Who knows whether this is in the hands of a political party? And who knows what that political party is doing with it? I am disturbed,” the Ajumako Anyan Essiam MP added.

Watch the reaction of NPP delegates after Ken showed them ‘evidence’ of chairmen receiving GH¢ 100k, pick-ups –

There was drama when New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong met with delegates of the party from the Tamale North and Sagnarigu constituencies in the Northern Region.

Ken Agyapong, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, told the NPP delegates that some of the party’s chairmen were given over GH¢100,000 and brand-new cars to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

But Ken’s allegation did not sit well with the NPP constituency chairman for Sagnarigu, who got up to challenge his claim, saying that he did not receive an inducement to support the vice president.

This forced Ken to show the delegates pictures of some chairpersons of the party apparently being offered money and vehicles.

As soon as Ken mentioned that he was going to show them proof of what he was saying, the crowd of delegates started cheering.

He then took out his phone and started showing his evidence to the delegates.

Almost all the delegates were up on their feet, rushing to take a look at Ken’s evidence.

Some of them can be seen shocked as they took a look at the visuals the NPP presidential hopeful showed them.

Watch Kufuor, Akufo-Addo, Pius Enam’s reaction after a poet referred to the president as ‘a short man’

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo joined the people of Akwamuman in the Eastern Region over the weekend to celebrate the 60-year reign of Nana Afrakoma II as the Queen Mother (Akwamuman Hemaa).

The President was seen among former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Pius Enam Hadzide, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority (NYA), and other dignitaries.

During a poetry recital session, a young man reciting poetry in the local dialect (Twi) generated laughter from the President and most of the dignitaries present.

As the young man continued with his appellations, he mentioned that if he had his way, he would refer to the President as “Amankwaatia.” This title, in other contexts, can mean a short person.

He stated that because people might misunderstand his appellation, they would claim he used “Amankwaatia” because the President is short.

“I would have called you Amankwaatia, but those who do not understand will say that it is because you’re short. But you are a genius, my elder; let me call you a genius,” he said while reciting his poetry.

The President upon hearing him burst out laughing and whispered something to former President Kufuor, who then responded with a comical gesture, leading to more laughter from him, the President, and Pius, who was sitting between them.

Nvidia becomes world’s most valuable public company with $3.34 trillion valuation –

0

Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company after its share price climbed to an all-time high on Tuesday.

The stock ended the trading day at nearly $136, up 3.5%, making it more valuable than Microsoft. It overtook Apple earlier this month.

American company Nvidia makes computer chips needed for artificial intelligence (AI) software, and demand for its products has boosted its sales and profits over the last few years.

Many investors believe its earnings can grow even more, which has caused its share price to soar, though some have questioned its sky-high valuation.

Tuesday’s share price rally means the market now values the company at $3.34tn (£2.63tn), with the price having nearly doubled since the start of this year.

Eight years ago, the stock was worth less than 1% of its current price.

Competition among AI developers is fierce. Microsoft, Google-owner Alphabet, Meta and Apple are just some of the tech heavyweights battling to create a world-beating product.

This competition benefits Nvidia, which dominates the vast majority of the AI chip market.

As such, investors believe the company will continue to surge in value. Nvidia’s sales and profit figures have surpassed many analyst expectations in recent years.

In May, after its latest set of financial results were published, Quilter Cheviot technology analyst Ben Barringer said the company had “once again cleared a very high hurdle”.

“Demand is showing no signs of switching off either,” he added.

However, a minority are more cautious.

In February, Barclays credit analyst Sandeep Gupta argued that Nvidia’s large market share would be hard to maintain given the increasing number of rivals and questioned how Nvidia’s customers would monetise AI software.

Harry Kane says he did not want to end career with regrets

0

Harry Kane said he did not want to finish his career with any “regrets” following his move to Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old England captain left Tottenham after 19 years on Saturday to join the German champions for an initial 100m euros (£86m).

He made his Bayern debut as they lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup later in the day.

Striker Kane said his family were “fully behind” him and he had made “the best decision”.

He said: “I didn’t want to get to the end of my career with regrets at not experiencing different leagues and cultures.

“I spent my whole career in England and the Premier League, so it may take a bit of adapting to get used to a new league.

“As you saw yesterday with Leipzig, there are some great teams in this league and it is going to be a real challenge.

“I know people expect Bayern to win the league every year, but I think teams are improving and it is getting tougher.

“For me, it is about settling in, getting as comfortable as possible and understanding the different teams and how I need to adapt.”

Kane, who is Spurs’ all-time leading scorer with 280 goals in 435 games, said he will return to the club to say goodbye.

“I didn’t get chance to say goodbye properly,” he said. “I sent the players a text to say I was leaving, but I will go and do it properly when I can.”

Kane joined the Spurs academy in 2004, signed his first professional contract in 2010 and made his senior debut in 2011.

“It was always going to be a tough decision,” Kane said. “Ultimately, I’m a professional, I’ve always pushed myself to my limits and the time was right.”

Manchester City were reportedly interested in signing Kane in 2021 and, with only one year left on his Spurs contract, he was also linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid this summer.

Kane, who described the past 48 hours as a “rollercoaster”, said he intends to look for property in Germany for his family – his wife Kate is pregnant with their fourth child – and learn German.

‘I’ll have German lessons at least once or twice a week,” Kane said. “I want to fit in as much as possible and learning the language is important. I want to try and embrace the culture, embrace the country.”

England manager Gareth Southgate was one of the first people to congratulate Kane on his move.

Kane said: “He knows his striker for England is playing at the highest level and that can only help the national team.”

A three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, Kane scored 213 goals in 320 games and needed 48 more to break Alan Shearer’s league record.

“People will talk about Alan Shearer and the record,” Kane said. “I’ve got plenty of football left in my career. For now, it is about reaching new levels with this club right now.”

Kane, who has never won a trophy in his professional career, has joined a team who lifted their 33rd Bundesliga title last season – and 11th in a row. They have also won the Champions League six times and 20 German Cups.

“If we get to the end of the season and we haven’t won every trophy, the club will be a little disappointed,” he said.

This season’s Champions League final will be played at Wembley next June.

“I joined this club to have a good chance of winning the Champions League, but for it to be at Wembley is amazing,” Kane said.

Bayern’s opening league game of the season is at Werder Bremen on Friday at 19:30 BST.

How ACP Kofi Sarpong eulogised KODA –

Renowned gospel musician, ACP Kofi Sarpong, has shared his sentiments following the demise of his colleague, Kofi Owusu Dua Anto, well known as KODA.

According to him, KODA is someone who does not joke with his music business and always ensures that he comes out with quality content to serve the public.

He indicated that the late gospel musician’s submissiveness and compassion are outstanding, and he will forever be remembered for that.

“KODA is a perfector and he wouldn’t do anything mediocre for himself or for God. His pieces of art and all the songs KODA came out with were exceptional. The humility and the human feeling he had for people. We have met at so many programmes and I know the kind of person he was,” he said during an interview with JoyPrime TV, which was monitored by GhanaWeb.

ACP Sarpong asserted that KODA’s sudden death should be a lesson to individuals to be prepared at all times because life is fragile.

“This [KODA’s demise] shows that we should make our luggages ready because it [death] can be any moment. Also, we should love one another and make peace with everybody.”

Massachusetts court convicts Ghanaian man involved in $8m romance scam scheme –

0

Kofi Osei admitted to orchestrating a sophisticated fraud scheme that targeted elderly individuals, resulting in the theft of over $8 million. Operating with accomplices, Osei used fake identities and fictitious online dating profiles to deceive victims into sending funds, exploiting their desire for companionship.

Despite pleas for leniency, Osei’s conviction on multiple charges, including wire fraud and money laundering, showed the seriousness of his actions and the enduring consequences for his victims.

Below is the full article by face2faceafrica.com published on GhanaWeb on March 30, 2023.

A federal court in Boston sentenced a Ghanaian national to 4 1/2 years in prison after he admitted to his involvement in a romance fraud scheme where more than $8 million was stolen from victims.

In a March 21 statement, the Department of Justice said 30-year-old Kofi Osei and his accomplices mostly targeted elderly people in their romance scams. Prosecutors said the convicted man used fake passports with pseudonyms to open at least 77 bank accounts between 2016 and 2020. He is said to have used those accounts to receive and quickly withdraw funds from the fraud victims.

“Osei’s co-conspirators created and used fictitious online dating profiles to capitalize on the victims’ desire for companionship, gain their trust, and direct victims to transfer money based on lies,” the Department of Justice said in the statement. “Osei coordinated with his co-conspirators to receive the fraud proceeds into the bank accounts he opened. He then withdrew the fraud proceeds in cash or with a cashier’s check, sending a portion back to his co-conspirators.”

Authorities said over $8 million in fraud proceeds were received, with $4 million of those funds directly going into accounts that Osei opened and controlled. Prosecutors also said some of the proceeds received from the romance scam were used to purchase cars that were transported to Nigeria and sold, per The Associated Press.

One of their romance scams involved a Florida woman who was informed her supposed online boyfriend had been taken into custody after an explosion on his oil rig, court documents stated. The victim was then made to send over $200,000 to accounts that were controlled by Osei after she was told the funds were needed to facilitate her partner’s release.

An account that Osei controlled also received $65,000 from another victim after she was informed an accident had occurred at her online boyfriend’s overseas worksite. The victim was told the money was going to be used to help workers who sustained injuries in the accident and also secure her jailed boyfriend’s release. Prosecutors said the scam left the victim “financially and emotionally devastated.”

Authorities arrested Osei in February 2021. His conviction also came after he pleaded guilty to seven counts of making a false statement to a bank, six counts of wire fraud, and two counts of money laundering. He entered the plea in September 2022. Besides the prison sentence, Osei was also ordered to pay $4,122,558 in restitution and forfeiture.

In court documents, Osei’s attorney said the convicted man legally came to the U.S. with the aim of becoming a professional soccer player, adding that he was raised in poverty in his native Ghana, The Associated Press reported. The defense also asked the court for leniency, noting that Osei was a loving father who had regretted his actions, and mentioned that Osei, who did not have any prior criminal history, had made “a poor and misguided decision.”

Alliance Francaise Shows ‘28th The Crossroads’

0

‘28th The Crossroads,’ an animation film that is set in the Gold Coast in February 1948, will be screened on Independence Day, March 6, 2023, at Alliance Francaise in Accra.

The film recreates the events leading to the Crossroad shooting of World War II veterans in Osu, Accra, in the Gold Coast, which is what Ghana was called by its British colonial overlords before independence.

Intricately woven around the lives of three World War veterans at the time — Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, whose expectation of coming home to a life of honour and respect for having fought for the British Empire in the war was dashed when they walked into a life of failed promises and despair.

Tired of bottling up their frustration and disappointment, these three war veterans and dozens of their colleagues finally decided to make known their frustrations to the government of the day in a planned peaceful demonstration.

According to history, the men planned to present a petition to the British Governor of the time and Commander-In-Chief of the Gold Coast Regiment, Sir Gerald Creasy, over their unpaid gratuities after World War II.

In the end, what transpired redefined the political history of the Gold Coast when the men arrived at the crossroads of the Christiansborg Castle; the seat of government at the time.

The show starts at 6pm.

AI.com flips from ChatGPT to Elon Musk’s X.ai

0

There was a bit of a hubbub in February as it emerged that OpenAI had seemingly purchased AI.com in order to redirect it to the ChatGPT web interface. But now erstwhile backer, Twitter haver and X lover Elon Musk appears to have taken the valuable domain off their hands, or else someone has done it for him: AI.com now redirects to X.ai, the billionaire’s embryonic machine learning research outfit.

Of course domains are bought and sold every day. But two-letter .com domains are rare and highly expensive, especially those that form words or familiar abbreviations. When AI.com started redirecting to OpenAI’s site, Mashable pointed out that the domain could hardly have sold for less than IT.com’s $3.8 million the previous year, and likely attained a far higher price given the hype around artificial intelligence in general.

No doubt OpenAI hoped that the purchase of AI.com would turn confused URL bar typers into lifetime users. Or perhaps it intended to eventually move its consumer-facing operations (like ChatGPT’s web client) over to the shorter domain. It seems we’ll never know, because now the domain goes to X.ai.

The news seems to have first been reported by Analytics India Magazine (perhaps a bidder itself at some point), but the truth is outside the transfer, there is precious little to say about the switch. It’s just bizarre and expensive enough to warrant noting here.

X.ai is still a largely notional organization, with a handful of academics and engineers working on, one imagines, whatever Musk tells them to. Its stated goal is “to understand the true nature of the universe,” but they haven’t made any visible progress since the site went up in July. Admittedly Musk has been busy during that time.

What could it mean? Did Sam Altman tire of his toy? Was the plan to shift to the new domain scrapped in favor of a new one? Was the sale tentative to begin with, or perhaps a month-to-month lease? Was there a bidding war, or did someone lose interest?

Whatever the case, it ends up just feeling like a couple rich guys squabbling over a shiny object. ChatGPT is the most recognizable brand in AI — so why pay millions to start a new one from scratch? And X.ai is already short and memorable (or at least it will be until there are eight other Musk companies called X), and there’s nothing worth looking at on the site, so why pay so much to redirect another empty site? It’s worth noting that OpenAI never did actually confirm it bought the domain, and Musk has not yet, and would never return our emails.

Logo from a recent staging site for AI.com

I will say that if I had $10 million and the opportunity to buy AI.com, you know what I would do? Redirect it to the obvious candidate and then dangle it in front of their competitors for a 50% markup. If that didn’t work, I’d switch it to the rival and offer it to the first company. Here’s hoping some information superhighwayman (if you will) had the same brainwave and squeezed one of these billionaires for a solid payday. If so, well played.

I suspect that ultimately no one actually cares who owns AI.com, and people in fact may be suspicious of whatever corporate entity controls what is obviously a vanity domain. Let’s all just agree not to use it. That will teach everyone a lesson.

WAPCo’s Gas Volumes Drop –

0

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has revealed that it is currently experiencing a drop in gas volumes available for transportation.

The company explained that the challenge is due to ongoing maintenance works by one of its gas producers in Nigeria.

A statement issued by WAPCo noted, “One of the producers of the natural gas WAPCo transports from Nigeria has shut down its facility for a three-week maintenance.”

It continued, “This has resulted in a decrease of gas available for WAPCo to transport to customers in Togo, Benin and Ghana. The current situation is entirely out of WAPCo’s control.”

The statement indicated that WAPCo continues to transport gas from the Western Region of Ghana to Tema, and that it is expected that normalcy will return after the maintenance activities.

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) owns and operates the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

The pipeline is a regional infrastructure linking natural gas resources to customers with a growing demand for cleaner and more efficient energy in the West African sub-region, particularly, in Ghana.

The WAGP is a bi-directional pipeline system with gas supply from both east (Nigeria) and west (Ghana) of the pipeline system.

Social Media Shut Over Deadly Senegal Protests |

0

Social media and messaging platforms have been blocked in Senegal after unrest erupted over the sentencing of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.

At least nine people were killed when Sonko’s supporters clashed with police in several cities on Thursday.

Sonko was not in court when he was given a two-year jail term for immoral behaviour, but cleared of rape charges.

The justice minister said he could be arrested at any time – and police are surrounding his house in the capital.

His supporters fear the conviction could prevent the 48-year-old politician from contesting next year’s presidential election.

Hundreds of officers are blocking his supporters from reaching his home in Dakar – and even his lawyers have been unable to visit him.

When the court handed down its verdict on Thursday, Sonko’s Pastef party called on people to “take to the streets”.

Interior Minister Antoine Félix Diome said the government had imposed restrictions on social media to stop the “dissemination of hate and subversive messages”.

People are upset about the move, which is affecting popular apps like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, TikTok, WhatsApp and YouTube.

They can be accessed using a virtual private network (VPN), but not everyone is aware about such software and how it works.

Several districts of the capital saw clashes – some of the worst confrontations were at the university campus in the city centre where police fired tear gas as vehicles burned and black smoke billowed over the area.

Many businesses closed – and some remained shut on Friday.

There was also violence in the southern city of Ziguinchor, where Sonko is mayor.

Sonko is very popular among unemployed youth and has undergone a meteoric political rise in the last few years.

After his dismissal as a tax inspector in 2016, he was elected to parliament and became mayor of Ziguinchor.

The government has rejected accusations that this case against the opposition leader, as well as others he has faced, were politically motivated.

He was accused of sexually assaulting and threatening a massage therapist at a beauty salon in 2021, which he denied.

Adding to the political tension is the belief that President Macky Sall plans to stay in office for an unconstitutional third term, though he has made no mention of such intentions.

Felicity Asantewaa to attempt Guinness World Record in ‘washcar-a-thon’ on March 9 –

0

Felicity Asantewaa is poised to make waves as she undertakes the challenge of a ‘washcar-a-thon’ on March 9, 2024. Armed with determination, Felicity is set to attempt a Guinness World Record in a unique ‘washcar-a-thon’ near Executive Club in East Legon.

Her ambitious goal is to break the Guinness World Record for the most cars washed by an individual, all within an impressive 8-hour time span.

Felicity’s decision to attempt breaking the longest car washing by an individual record, according to her, stems from her passionate commitment to empowering young women in Ghana, fostering gender equality, and showcasing the limitless opportunities available to them.

“It’s not about taking over or competing with men, but rather showcasing that women are capable of the same opportunities for a living,” she told the media. “For instance, we now have women driving commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, engaging in various activities, demonstrating their independence.”

She continued: “I have observed that the car washing job has been dominated by males in Ghana; however, I believe females can equally do this work perfectly. To promote the name of Ghana as well as empower young women out there, I want to demonstrate to my fellow young people that women can also consider the job of car washing to make a living and ultimately gain financial independence.”

On why she chose car washing when there are other means to achieve her aim, Felicity highlighted her admiration for cars, stressing that, “Though I don’t have a car now, I love cars. I also know a lot of car brands. So, when I thought of empowering young women and promoting Ghana, I chose what I love to do to have an impact in the young women’s world.”

She encouraged the general public to make their way to the venue, promising a day full of excitement. According to Felicity, “There is going to be a lot of fun; we’ll play Ghanaian music and there will be lots of giveaways.”

The event is expected to start at 7 am at East Legon Go Go Wash premises, near the Executive Club.

Felicity Asantewaa joins the list of Ghanaians to participate in the Guinness World Record attempts.

This surge of record-breaking enthusiasm began in December 2023 when media personality and entrepreneur Afua Owusu Asantewaa Aduonum set the tone with her daring sing-a-thon, aiming to break the record for the longest singing marathon by an individual. She sang for five days and is awaiting a response from officials.

Following in her footsteps, Failatu Abdul-Razak, popularly known as Chef Faila, embarked on a cook-a-thon, attempting to establish the record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual by cooking for 227 hours, a culinary feat which is now in hot contention, as Chef Smith endeavors to cook non-stop for fifty days in hopes of seizing the title.

FDA details why sale of ‘tsofi’ was banned in Ghana –

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has provided an in-depth explanation regarding the ban on the consumption of turkey tail, locally known as ‘tsofi.’

This comes after the Eastern Regional office of the regulatory body, together with the Ghana Police Service, performed a crackdown exercise at Suhum and Nsawam/Adoagyiri, to stop the sale of the delicacy.

The FDA emphasised that the ban on tsofi has been in effect since 1999, and the recent crackdown sought to reinforce compliance with this regulation.

Shedding light on the rationale behind the prohibition, the Deputy CEO, Food Division of FDA, Roderick Daddey-Adjei, who spoke with Accra-based TV3, indicated that the regulatory body is concerned about the health challenges associated with the consumption of this popular Ghanaian delicacy, tsofi.

“The background to all of this is the law, the guideline that we use. There is a standard, specifically the GS 91 (2015), it’s about meat and meat products. It states the specification for dressed, chilled and frozen poultry. Section 4.3.2 reads dressed poultry and or poultry parts shall have fat contents of not more than 15% when tested. So, if you have a product that is mean and it contains more than that, it is a problem.

“The reason why this was cited was the fact that people had made it a market where they go overseas and import products like the turkey tail (tsofi) which is really a sebaceous gland,” he explained.

He continued: “You could also have veterinary drug residue within, poultries are sometimes given medications and you could find deposits in the tail. So, you can imagine if somebody goes and the person’s selection of meat is to have that portion cut and fill a captain, maybe fill about 10kg and that is all that the container contains and bring over which people call a delicacy. It smells nice because it is oil and it has that nice flavour but the other side is the health effect that it will have on people.”

He further commended the government’s proactive measures, executed through the FDA and other stakeholders, in addressing the health risks associated with the consumption of turkey tail.

The FDA emphasised the long-standing cautionary stance on this matter, indicating that any attempt to import such products at the port would result in detention.

“The issue of building cholesterol in yourself, which at the end of the day can seriously affect your health. So, you will be looking at what we call non communicable diseases, and these are diseases that your choice of lifestyle contributes to.

“So, it is a good plan that the government had in place through its arm, like the Food and Drugs Authority and other stakeholders, who from time immemorial, have been cautionate of this. So if you bring such a thing at the port it will be detained,” he added.

A scene from the event

If you ever doubted that the spirit of jazz music among Ghanaians was still alive and well-nurtured, the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill at Ridge in Accra on Sunday evening was a resounding testament to the enduring passion Ghanaians have for the genre.

This vibrant scene was set by Stanbic Bank Ghana, which hosted ‘An Evening with Tumi: Classical, Jazz, Soul & Gospel’, an event that serenaded music lovers and jazz connoisseurs, and offered a truly memorable experience.

Tumi is an ensemble of self-taught musicians blazing a trail in jazz, opera, and gospel music in Ghana. Through initiatives like these, Stanbic Bank Ghana is nurturing creativity and championing the artistry that inspires and enriches Ghanaian communities.

Speaking on the motivation for the event, Mawuko Afadzinu, Head of Brand and Marketing at Stanbic Bank Ghana, said, “This event, along with other initiatives we champion in the creative arts space, is an expression of the bank’s commitment to investing across the arts spectrum – what we call the orange economy. It is a testament to our support for the arts and entertainment industry.”

The evening at the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill celebrated rich tradition, highlighting the bank’s ongoing dedication to the art.

“The arts in Africa are a powerful expression of our creativity and play an integral part in generating a positive narrative with a global impact. Our mandate at Stanbic Bank is to support a wide range of initiatives that bolster the industry, and this event is indicative of that commitment,” he added.

Supporting jazz music is not new to Stanbic Bank Ghana. Jazz enthusiasts will recall the annual Stanbic Bank Jazz Festival, which has hosted global and African legends such as Earl Klugh, Bob James, Salif Keita, Richard Bona, and UB40.

The Stanbic Jazz Festival, a musical journey that began in 2014, brings world-class jazz acts to serenade jazz lovers in Ghana.

This festival creates a platform for global legends and local icons to perform together, continuing the tradition of the Standard Bank Group, which consistently blends homegrown talents with international acts at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in Johannesburg.

By encouraging such creative initiatives, Stanbic Bank Ghana not only nurtures local talent but also enriches the cultural fabric of the community, ensuring that the spirit of jazz – and the arts more broadly – remains vibrant and influential.

Phil Jones to leave Man Utd this summer after ‘difficult’ few years

0

Phil Jones made 229 appearances for Manchester United, scoring six goals

Phil Jones will leave Manchester United when his contract expires this summer, after a “very difficult” few years because of injuries.

The 31-year-old, who has been capped 27 times by England, made 229 appearances for United and scored six goals.

The defender joined in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers and was part of the Premier League-winning team in 2012-13.

“I’ve worked tirelessly hard – I literally left no stone unturned,” Jones said in a club interview.

“I tried to get back as quick as I could, every time I was out in the last couple of years.”

His final appearance for United came in a 3-0 win over Brentford at the end of last season, and he has been sidelined with injury during this campaign.

“I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played amongst. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could,” Jones wrote in an open letter to Manchester United fans.

“It’s been very difficult, the last couple of years, there’s no denying that,” he added in his club interview.

Jones admitted he felt like he was “letting people down” and that he “found it hard to even speak to my team-mates” because he was “hurt that I couldn’t help them”.

“My family have been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping me focused, to try to get fit and try to play more.

“I think the highlight for me would have to be the Wolves game [returning from injury last season], when I came back.

“That was just a moment that I’ll never forget. It gives me goosebumps now, thinking about it. I mean I worked so, so hard to get to that stage of fitness.

“That was a huge, huge moment in my career and the fans, that day, were incredible. The love that they showed me for that game, the passion that they showed, was sensational.

“I can’t thank them enough for that. They’ve been a constant support throughout my time here.”

During his 12 years at the club, Jones won the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign with United.

He also won the FA Cup in 2016, the League Cup and Europa League in 2017 and the Community Shield in 2011 and 2013.

Speaking in 2021, Jones said had “been through hell and back over the last couple of years” after struggling with injury and lockdown.

He described breaking down in tears and feelings of “rage” and helplessness over being labelled a figure of ridicule by some of his own supporters and described once being verbally abused in the street in Hale while out with his two daughters.

Manchester United said: “Our number four is now taking some time before deciding his next move.

“Everybody at United would like to wish Phil the very best of luck for the future.”

Manager Erik ten Hag said: “He has a great career, what he achieved, winning the FA Cup, winning Europa League, being present at two World Cups, massive career at Man United.

“All the credits for his career.”
