Spate Of Collapsed Buildings: MMDAs Must Enforce Land Use Laws — Spatial Planning Authority |

0

Special investigations conducted by the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) into the recent collapse of buildings have revealed that lack of enforcement of the LUSPA laws by the assemblies is the major cause of the disasters.

Consequently, the authority has taken note of the lapses on the side of the assemblies and has recommended that the respective local government assemblies must be sanctioned for flouting the LUSPA Act, 2016 (Act 952) and the LUSPA Regulations (LI 2384).

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic, the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the LUSPA, Kwadwo Yeboah, charged the Metropolitan, Municipal and District

Assemblies (MMDAs) to, through the spatial planning committees, rigorously enforce the provisions of the LUSPA Act, and the regulations (LI 2384) as mandated.

Mr Yeboah, who was speaking to the report on the outcome of the recent investigations conducted by LUSPA on the collapse of structures, particularly in the capital, Accra, urged the MMDAs to be committed to the spatial planning laws.

The interview with the CEO of LUSPA was, among other things, to explore reasons behind the recent collapse of buildings and what was being done to prevent such incidents going forward.

He said spatial planning committees at the assemblies were to ensure that every development was covered by permit and carried out in accordance with an approved local plan of the area.

He said that would be a major step towards halting the continuous collapse of buildings under construction.

Background

The country within the last four months recorded eight structural collapse in three different regions, resulting in two deaths and 62 injuries, according to statistics from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

Out of the eight incidents, the Greater Accra Region recorded six between May 1 and 9, this year, while the Ashanti and Northern regions recorded a case each.

Acting on these disasters, LUSPA commissioned the Greater Accra Regional Director of the authority to investigate the incidents.

The LUSPA CEO said the investigative report which had been presented to him revealed that the assemblies were not performing their enforcement functions very well.

To that end, Mr Yeboah said: “We will submit the report to the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development and indicate the lapses by the assemblies so that the minister can institute the appropriate sanctions.”

He said when any assembly breached the provisions of the law, it was the duty of the LUSPA to advise the minister in charge to sanction the assembly.

LUSPA laws

Explaining further, Mr Yeboah said Act 925 and the Regulations LI 2384 had established spatial planning committees at every assembly chaired by the chief executive.

The committees, he said, were to ensure that every development within its jurisdiction was covered with permit which it had approved for construction.

“Enforcement is very weak so if we are doing proper enforcement at the assembly level, we will not be seeing the unauthorised structures and haphazard developments.”

“That is the key responsibility because the spatial planning committees have been mandated as the planning authority within their jurisdictions,” the LUSPA CEO stressed.

Mr Yeboah, however, pointed out that some professionals at times also neglected their professional duties by not adhering to rigid professional practice.

“If you issue a permit for somebody to construct, you have to monitor.

It is the duty of the assembly to monitor from the start of the building to the finishing,” he said.

The LUSPA boss said when the person finished the construction works, the assembly must go and inspect for them to satisfy themselves that the building suited the specification before they issued the certificate of habitation.

“And the law is saying that each assembly must establish a planning and building inspectorate unit to do the day-to-day monitoring of physical development within their enclave,” Mr Yeboah said.

Mines and Energy Committee to meet IPPs, others over energy debt

0

Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, has said that his team is scheduled to hold a crunch meeting with sectors in the energy sector next week to address the concerns raised by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) regarding the significant outstanding debts that pose a threat to the stability of the national grid.

The meeting, which will involve the committee, the Finance Ministry, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the IPPs, is aimed at finding a solution to the crisis.

“It is crucial for the Minister of Finance, the Boards of ECG, and the committee to establish a clear roadmap for resolving this matter,” said Mr. Atta Akyea.

“We must avoid a situation where the government is pressured into taking actions that could be perceived as blackmail,” he added.

He added that the committee is “committed to finding a solution that is in the best interests of all stakeholders.”

The IPPs, which control about 50 percent of the country’s generation mix, have highlighted that the outstanding debts have hindered their access to working capital, preventing them from financing crucial inputs such as chemicals for water treatment in thermal generators and other supplies, many of which are priced in foreign currency, primarily the US dollar.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Blackface further stated that if only Olamide had reached out to him, then there would have been a collaboration.

He said, “Listening to the music, the first thing that hit me was just the line. That was the line that I used in my own music. I had already released it in the year, 2020. I had already released that song in an album.

“Though no disrespect because these people have tried to put some work in it, but I feel like it’s all about you realising let’s give credit to who credit his due. You understand. I am not out to put them down. I feel like they are doing it unconsciously.”

He added, “I feel I should be on Asake’s Joha. That should have been a remix with me and him if Olamide had said ‘my boy is vibing to your sound’.

Jordan Ayew received a special honour from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for reaching his 100th international cap for Ghana.

The Crystal Palace forward was awarded a golden boot by the football governing body before Monday evening’s match against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The former Marseille player celebrated the milestone in style, scoring a hat-trick as Ghana secured a thrilling 4-3 win, moving to the top of Group I and taking control of their qualification group for the 2026 World Cup.

Ayew made his debut for Ghana on September 5, 2010, against Swaziland and scored his first and second international goals in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

The 32-year-old reached the 100-cap milestone during the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where he scored two goals in three matches against Mozambique.

Since then, Ayew has made four more appearances for Ghana, playing against Nigeria, Uganda, Mali, and the Central African Republic.

His recent performances have moved him to sixth place on Ghana’s all-time top scorers chart with 27 goals, trailing legends like Abdul Razak, Tony Yeboah, Kwasi Owusu, Edward Acquah, and the country’s all-time top scorer, Asamoah Gyan.

Ayew’s achievement is a testament to his enduring quality and dedication to the national team, as he continues to be a key figure in Ghana’s quest for World Cup qualification.

Nigerian actress-turned-politician Funke Akindele has deleted all political-related posts she had shared on her Instagram earlier.

Funke was a running mate in the last Nigerian elections to the Lagos State governorship candidate under the umbrella of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor.

They, unfortunately, lost the election. The incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, won the election with 762,134 votes, defeating the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who had 312,329 votes, followed by Abdul-Azeez Adediran with 62,449 votes.

Funke decided to delete political posts hours after the defeat.

She subsequently made a post to thank her supporters.

She wrote; “It has been an amazing and insightful experience on my journey to the ballot and I must say, it was an absolute learning curve for me. A lot of things have been learned and unlearned. I sincerely do not regret taking this huge step of running for office.”

“I, therefore, want to thank the people of Lagos state for believing in me and supporting my decision to run for office. I saw every message of support online and offline, I heard of all the places where people supported me and challenged those who tried to discredit me.”

“I remember every warm welcome during our campaign tour and the faith you all showed in me. The elections might not have panned out in the way we hoped, but it was an honourable run for us. We fought a good fight indeed as a matter of fact.

“I also want to encourage all who mean well for the Nation and the state of Lagos not to give up. I understand that some of us are beginning to develop some sort of apathy towards the system, however, if we do not speak, we would never be heard.,” she indicated.

“I’m glad that we could at least speak up.
Thank you once again, Lagos, for showing your daughter support. As I consider my next moves in life, I will continue prioritizing the good of the people and the integrity of my position as an advocate for the people,” she concluded.

Govt has spent GH₵339m on National Cathedral project

0

The Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat, Dr Paul Opoku Mensah has revealed that the Akufo-Addo government has spent a total of GH₵339.003.064.86 on the National Cathedral project.

The amount includes a total of GH₵113 million paid to the Consultant, Sir David Adjaye and GH₵225 million paid directly to the Secretariat for the construction of the project.

Speaking after President Akufo-Addo paid a working visit to the construction site on Monday, January 2, 2023, Dr Opoku Mensah also dismissed reports that the secretariat has misappropriated funds allocated for the project by the state.

“For purposes of clarity, I want to report a verbatim memo I sent on this issue dated 19th January 2022 and addressed to the Clerk of Parliament. The indication was that the government has given us GH₵339 million, and we could account for GH₵225 million leaving GH₵114 million missing.

“Here, I quote what I wrote to the Clerk. As we indicated to the Committee on Thursday, December 15, 2022, the total amount paid by the Government of Ghana to the National Cathedral project is GH¢339 million. This total is made up of the following: the amount paid directly to the National Cathedral Secretariat is GH₵225 million. The amount paid directly to the Consultant, Adjaye Associates & Design Team is GH₵113.040.54.67 million The two payments total GH₵339.003.064.86.”

“So, there are no missing funds that could not be accounted for. Secondly, the detailed account for these funds was provided to Parliament on December 15, 2022, by the Secretariat. In the case of the accounting from the Secretariat, this involves among others, total payments made to the contractor, and total payments made to the Bible Museum and Biblical Gardens Design Team.”

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has once again reiterated his commitment to ensuring the completion of the National Cathedral project despite the numerous criticisms.

Akufo-Addo said with support from the Christian community the promise he made to God will be fulfilled and the National Cathedral will be completed.

The President was speaking after he visited the construction site of the stalled project and made a donation of GH₵‎100,000.

“As I have said before, the National Cathedral will not just be another monument adorning the skyline of Accra, it will be a rallying point for the entire Christian community to come together and worship… I am therefore committed to working with the Board of Trustees to ensure the completion of this project to the glory of God.”

The National Cathedral project has seen a lot of controversies, as many Ghanaians continue to question the prudence of the state financing an edifice that is said to be President Akufo-Addo’s personal pledge to God.

But President Akufo-Addo has been unwavering in his resolve to build the National Cathedral in Ghana.

In the 2023 budget, GH¢80 million was allocated to fund the project despite the current economic crisis.

However, Parliament voted against the appro of budget estimates of GH¢80 million for the construction of the National Cathedral for 2023.

Man Utd have quality to ‘beat any opponent’ –

0

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insists his team is capable of beating “any opponent” as they prepare to face Bayern Munich with their Champions League status on the line.

Four points from five games so far has left United bottom of Group A. But a place in the last 16 is still just about achievable for Ten Hag’s side – the only catch is they have to win against Bayern Munich at home and pray for a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray in the other fixture.

Unfortunately for United, they go into the crunch match at Old Trafford off the back of a dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth. But Ten Hag is choosing to focus on the positives taken from better performances in recent weeks – like against Chelsea a few days earlier.

“We have very good performances and highs. We are able to beat any opponent,” Ten Hag said.

“The game against Chelsea, Everton. Even against Galatasaray. This team can perform at really high levels. We have to work about that. It is my responsibility, to improve the team. I will give everything, the team will as well. I can show them the clips from Chelsea.

“If we have a good plan we can beat any opponent.”

United were only narrowly beaten by Bayern in the reverse fixture in Munich back on matchday one, with the German champions edging a seven-goal thriller after several late goals.

“There were stages in that game when we played very good,” Ten Hag said, looking back. “It was head-to-head for a long time. We suffered some mistakes that were avoidable. When you play against Bayern you have to be at your best. Chelsea also had amazing players, we dominated them.”

It could also be a boost to United that Bayern have already qualified for the next round as group winners and have nothing to play for. Their streak of successive group stage wins came to an end at 17 on matchday five with a 0-0 draw against Copenhagen, while they were surprisingly thrashed 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga over the weekend.

That being said, the trip to Manchester could be prime for a response to that unexpected embarrassment, while Bayern haven’t lost in the Champions League group stage since 2017.

Piedmont Lithium to sell portion of its Atlantic shares to another firm

0

US-based Piedmont Lithium has announced it will sell a portion of shares it holds in Aim- and ASX-listed Atlantic Lithium to Atlantic’s biggest shareholder, Assore International.

The Nasdaq- and ASX-listed company will sell 24.3 million shares of Atlantic at £0.25 apiece, putting about $ 7.8 million in its coffers.

“We have always viewed our Atlantic shares as a potential source of capital and are pleased to further bolster our cash balance through this agreement,” said Piedmont Lithium president and CEO Keith Phillips.

The sale represents about 3.8% of Atlantic’s outstanding shares and will reduce Piedmont’s shareholding in the owner of the Ewoyaa project, in Ghana, to about 5.2%.

Assore, which previously sought to buy Atlantic, now owns about 28.4% of Atlantic.

The sale of these shares has no impact on Piedmont’s joint venture, earn-in, or offtake position with Atlantic or the Ewoyaa project.

“We remain confident about the potential of Ewoyaa as a logistically advantaged, low-cost producer of spodumene concentrate, but are taking a disciplined approach to deploying capital in the current lithium price environment and positioning ourselves for the recovery we anticipate in the lithium market,” said Phillips.

Piedmont’s goal is to become one of the biggest lithium hydroxide producers in North America by processing spodumene concentrate produced from assets where it holds an economic interest. Its projects include our Carolina Lithium and Tennessee Lithium projects in the US and partnerships in Quebec with Sayona Mining, and in Ghana with Atlantic Lithium.

Ofori-Atta’s utterances caused calls for his dismissal

0

Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi has blamed Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta for calls for his remo from office.

Mr. Boakye said some inconsistent pronouncements made by Mr. Ofori-Atta were largely the cause of the uproar.

Speaking on Face to Face on Citi TV, the Subin lawmaker said “pronouncements of Ofori-Atta on this IMF debacle have not helped him. Every politician must live or die by his word and that is my belief. Once you say something, you must be committed because you don’t have the luxury of trial and error.”

Mr. Boakye said the Finance Minister could not stick to his assurances which has resulted in the economic meltdown that the country finds itself.

“We were here in 2021 when all the signs were that the economy was going to go into crisis. Then the Finance Minister came to meet the Majority Caucus and assured us that the IMF was not a good thing, and we all agreed, and then he said he rather wants us to raise money internally so that we don’t have to go to the IMF. So he brought the e-levy and the property rate. We settled for these, and you saw how we fought with our Minority colleagues to ensure that e-levy passed and only for us to be told a few months later that we have not realized the projected revenue of GH¢300 million. We only realized GH¢30 million which is only 10%.”

“To even make matters worse, he openly told the whole nation that we are a proud nation and have the resources and the capacity and that we will not go to the IMF,” Mr. Boakye added.

I left Millicom because people thought a Ghanaian couldn’t manage it – Adadevoh –

0

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh, has disclosed that one of the reasons he left Millicom was because of a general mistrust in the competencies of a Ghanaian to lead large companies.

Speaking on ‘Time With Selorm’ on the theme ‘Five Years Plus of Impact: Celebrating Leadership and Digital Transformation for Progress in Ghana,’ the telecommunication CEO said despite those mistrust and misgivings about the abilities of Ghanaians to lead large and multinational companies, it remains the responsibility of Ghanaians to demonstrate they can lead such big companies.

“A lot of these large companies did not trust Ghanaians to lead these businesses because they were concerned, and that is one of the reasons why I left Millicom. They did not believe that they were ready to trust the business into the hands of a Ghanaian.”

“There is one part, which is that we Ghanaians have a responsibility to demonstrate that we can actually lead such companies and lead them well. For me, that is one part, and if I was giving back to my country, being able to demonstrate that Ghanaians have the capability, they have the intellectual capacity, the leadership credentials, and profile to lead companies like this is extremely important because this will open doors for other Ghanaians in other large companies as well or, at the very least, encourage other people to discount what Ghanaians can do.”

He, however, celebrated his time as the head of MTN Ghana, saying there were a lot of things that were made known by virtue of him being Ghanaian compared with his time at Digicel in Haiti.

“When I was in Haiti, everyone was smiling everywhere I go, and behind all of that, everything was not fine, but people just could not say it.”

Selorm Adadevoh has been appointed the Chief Commercial Officer of MTN Group, which is expected to take effect in March 2024.

Outrage As Zimbabwe President Names Son As Minister |

0

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been accused of nepotism after appointing his son as one of a new set of ministers following his controversial re-election last month.

Mr Mnangagwa on Monday named his son, David Kudakwashe, as deputy finance minister as part of the parliament’s youth quota.

He also appointed his nephew, Tongai Mnangagwa, the deputy tourism minister, local media reported.

Mthuli Ncube, an ex-banker, was retained as the finance minister while the ruling Zanu-PF party’s national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri was re-appointed as the defence minister.

Outspoken main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) lawmaker Fadzayi Mahere termed the new ministerial line-up as “indefensible”, and accused Mr Mnangagwa of stoking nepotism.

Some social media users have been expressing disappointment with the appointment.

There has been no official reaction from the ruling party or the presidency over the accusation. However supporters of Mr Mnangagwa say his son is qualified for the position.

Mr Mnangagwa’s re-election has been disputed by the opposition citing claims of fraud, while some observers said the poll failed to meet regional and international standards.

Nigeria Central Bank clears $2 billion forex backlog – Report –

0

Nigeria’s central bank paid about $2 billion of the amount it owed lenders to settle matured foreign-exchange contracts, Thisday newspaper reported.

The central bank made the overdue payments over three months, and they include $61.64 million to settle part of outstanding liabilities owed to foreign airlines with operations in the country, the Lagos-based newspaper reported, citing the bank.

Government officials estimate the amount of overdue forward payments at about $6.7 billion. This day puts the figure between $7 billion and $10 billion, without citing sources. The amount includes at least $744 million owed to foreign airlines as of March last year, according to the International Air Transport Association.

The inability to clear the backlog has weighed on the naira, which has lost more than 50% of its value since it was allowed to trade more freely against the dollar in June last year.

The payment signals the central bank’s commitment to clearing all overdue obligations to reduce the pressure on the naira, according to the newspaper.

Stakeholders Call For E-Levy Review

0

Nana Akua Anyidoho

The government has been urged to focus on effective revenue production and equitable distribution within the country’s larger tax framework instead of burdening consumers.

Stakeholders at a tax forum organised by the International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in Accra made the call. It was themed, “Taxing Mobile Money-Lessons and Ways Forward.”

Director of the Centre for Social Policy Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Akua Anyidoho, criticised the e-levy’s rushed implementation, calling it relapsing.

According to her, “Governments may think they understand the evidence and reasons, but the performance of mobile money taxation tells a different story. Tax receipts consistently fall below projections, indicating that there’s still much to learn about utilizing this tool for effective tax mobilization. Additionally, the vast size of the growing digital finance ecosystem in many African countries can be both a boon and a challenge. While governments may see it as low-hanging fruit for taxation, there can be significant trade-offs involved -e.g. in financial inclusion and transition to cash-lite economy.”

Head of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s project management unit, Isaac Kwabena Amoako, also stressed on the need for governments to prioritise research and cultivate partnerships with all stakeholders in order to successfully influence policy formulation.

“This is mainly to help us undertake joint research activities, and also promote and support the GRA’s research capacity to improve tax revenue mobilization in an effective and equitable manner. I must confirm that since the signing of the MOU, ICTD has been very helpful to GRA,” he noted.

Mr. Amoako indicated that the implementation of the e-levy has not hindered efforts to enhance financial inclusion acknowledging that the rollout of the policy faced challenges thereby failing to meet its target.

He averred that through collaborative efforts, behavioral attitudes toward the e-levy could be changed to meet its revenue target.

Ruto Rejects Credit For Drop in Fuel Prices: “Don’t Clap for Me…It Won’t Help”

0

President William Ruto declined applause for the recent decrease in fuel prices, emphasizing that the matter was beyond his control.

The December review in fuel costs resulted in pump prices decreasing to Sh212.36 in Nairobi for super petrol (from Sh217) and Sh201.47 (from Sh203.47) for diesel.

RELATED – Kenyans Receive Festive Relief as EPRA Cuts Pump Prices

“I told you prices of fuel will come down. I am telling you again, the prices will reduce further next month. But do not clap for me… because I have not done anything to reduce that price. I have done nothing… You have only helped to clap for me, but there is nothing I have done,” President Ruto.

Speaking in Kisii over the weekend, Ruto said he has specific responsibilities, and there are tasks he cannot undertake.

“This is because I am not the one who increases or reduces the price of fuel. Some people own oil out there, they bring us the prices. The only thing I am announcing to you is that those who bring that fuel have reduced the prices and it will continue doing so,” Ruto stated.

‘Leaders Are Not Miracle Workers’

In his address, the President implied that making promises about reducing pump prices would be deceptive.

“The problem in Kenya is about our leadership, leaders who don’t want to tell the truth. Leaders are not people meant to perform miracles. There are no miracles, leaders are not angels. Only Jesus can perform miracles, the rest of us is all about working hard,” said Dr Ruto.

“There are those who want to be clapped for and they keep lying to Kenyans. Let us stop lying. Where it is my responsibility, I will work very hard. But even so, when things have become good, let us not claim credit where we have done nothing. Don’t clap for me, your clapping won’t help,” added President Ruto.

He emphasized that responsibilities are clearly defined for each leader, and it is crucial to acknowledge and fulfill the tasks assigned to each of them.

“There is work that I must do, like reducing the cost of fertiliser. We must tell each other the truth. They are saying the president can reduce the cost of fuel, will he do that? With what?” Ruto posed.

Nollywood actress, Tina Mba has spilled on how one of her male colleague’s wife handled his cheating habit.

The veteran, in an interview with TVC ‘Your View’ while speaking on cheating among actors, narrated how an actor’s wife caught him cheating and didn’t quarrel.

According to her, the actor’s wife sent love letters to him and cooked Afang soup for him. This surprised the unnamed actor, who realized his mistake and severed ties with the harem of women around him.

“I know an actor who will tell you, my wife is calling me I want to take her call.

The day the wife caught him cheating, she didn’t quarrel with him, she sent him a love letter and said she was going to cook Afang soup for him, and on his own, he started deleting numbers of women”.

The revelation has caused a stir online with many applauding the wife for her calm nature and wisdom.

One Toby Loba wrote, “The wife nah a wise queen and more, it can never be Gen Z women though

One Vision And Palate wrote, “Someone said the Lord way do am for the wife, make e avoid me

One I Am Bull wrote, “A wise woman and more. Sometimes you don’t have to be violent to resolve issues. Leave him his conscience

One Omah Leeautos wrote, “She didn’t fight him? She cooked Afang with love notes and the man ate it?? Without fear? Ah this story is funny

One Poshest Hope wrote, “I always say it that promiscuous husbands have mind. Especially the ones that their wives know about their promiscuity. You’ll still go home and eat their meals like nothing happened. E be like una don dey get spare lives somewhere

Still on the subject of cheating, veteran actress, Patience Ozokwor had revealed why she can’t leave her marriage over infidelity.

The veteran, who lost her husband years back and has refused to remarry, stated that she can’t leave her husband’s house for anyone, because the side chick is the visitor and as such, must leave for her.

Mama G, as she is fondly called, listed out the things she would do to secure her home.

Concurring with her, late Fela Kuti’s daughter, Yeni Kuti had stated that infidelity is not a deal breaker in marriage.

Referring to how her late father married several women, she insisted that she would never leave her home for another woman as she revealed the only deal breaker in her marriage.

Clarifying the details of the incident, the Public Relations Officer for the school, Williams Adinkra made this revelation during an interview on Kumasi-based OTEC FM, Nyansapo, on Tuesday, July 4.

Mr Adinkra emphasized that the sexual encounter captured in the video took place off-campus, contrary to initial reports suggesting it occurred on school premises.“We met the three students immediately after the video surfaced online and they admitted the offence, the first two persons who were the ones who engaged in the sex bout and captured it in a video said they did it while on vacation,” the PRO explained.

He further stated, “According to our investigation, the third person, who allegedly released the video, downloaded it from the girl’s phone and later demanded Ghc5,000 from her.”

We won’t fall victim to your shenanigans for the third time – Importers and Exporters Association to Bawumia

0

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his recent comments regarding the operations of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

During a recent meeting with the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Bawumia expressed concerns about the conduct of GRA personnel, alleging instances of customer harassment under the guise of tax collection.

However, IEAG’s Executive Secretary, Samson Asaki Awingobit, in a statement on March 25, condemned Dr. Bawumia’s stance, emphasizing that they refuse to be swayed by unfulfilled assurances aimed at securing votes in the upcoming December elections.

The Association urged the Vice President to apologize to the business community for his failure to fulfill promises made during his campaign.

“Ghanaian Importers and Exporters would like to tell the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his likes that, we will not fall victim to their shenanigans for the third time. We will judge him and others based on their performance and not on deceit-induced campaign promises which will end up becoming another mirage.”

“We rather expect the Vice President to apologize to the business community for reneging on his campaign promises and not this last-minute populist-driven show-off.”

The IEAG further highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s six years of silence on crucial issues like tax collection methods, which, they argued, led to adverse effects on businesses and even caused some to leave the country.

“The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana can best describe the Vice President’s recent stand as a populist attempt to redeem his image in the eyes of the business community, considering the fact that he as a Vice president kept mute on this issue among other issues for the past 6 years failing to prompt the Ghana Revenue Authority on the need to change their modus of tax collection which has forced many businesses out of the country.”

PRESS RELEASE

WE WILL NOT BE MISLED FOR THE THIRD TIME WITH YOUR SUDDEN FOUND VOICE ‘MR VICE PRESIDENT’

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has been following with keen interest, recent comments made by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia, which seeks to criticize the operations of the Ghana Revenue Authority through the use of unhealthy practices in the collection of taxes from businesses to meet targets.

It is quite worrying and surprising to hear the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, coming out now to voice such concerns that have existed for several years with little or no attempt from his good office to addressing them despite several petitions from industry players.

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana can best describe the Vice President’s recent stand as a populist attempt to redeem his image in the eyes of the business community, considering the fact that he as a Vice president kept mute on this issue among other issues for the past 6 years failing to prompt the Ghana Revenue Authority on the need to change their modus of tax collection which has forced many businesses out of the country.

It will interest the public to note that the constant harassment by the GRA coupled with most of these nuisance taxes introduced by the Nana Addo-led government of which the Vice president at a point in time was the head of the Economic Management Team, have done more harm than good to the business community and a clear example being an unprecedented relocation of business from Ghana to neighbouring Ivory Coast and Togo.

Currently, Ghana’s volume of trade has reduced drastically with Importers and Exporters preferring to transact business in the Ports of neighbouring countries due to the draconian taxes piled up on Importers by the Nana Addo-led regime.

The IEAG would like to find out from the Vice President what prevented him from speaking against these bad practices by the GRA and as well the introduction of unreasonable taxes that have affected goods and services in the past 7 years. Is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia now speaking on these matters because he wants power from the very people he betrayed when he promised to move the country from taxation to production? Has he now found his voice because elections are near and has to do something to improve his chances of becoming the next president?

Ghanaian Importers and Exporters would like to tell Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his likes that, we will not fall victim to their shenanigans for the third time. We will judge him and others based on their performance and not on deceit-induced campaign promises which will end up becoming another mirage. We rather expect the Vice President to apologize to the business community for reneging on his campaign promises and not this last-minute populist-driven show-off.

Signed

NDC’s demand for serial numbers of BVRs an insult to its agents – NPP

0

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed says the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) demand for serial numbers of BVRs demeans its agents stationed at voter registration centres across the country.

According to him, the request implies a lack of trust in the competence and integrity of the NDC’s representatives, thereby undermining the party’s reputation.

This follows the NDC’s request for the Electoral Commission (EC) to release the serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits, which are aimed at tracking the machines currently in use at the limited voter registration exercise across the country.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM show on May 10, 2024, he stated, “For me, I see this request as an insult to the agents of the NDC across all the 268 centres that we have because every agent of any political party is required to monitor and identify every registration machine.

“We have given them tally cards, full books of which particular machine would be identified. So, I am surprised at their asking for serial numbers. They know that the serial numbers of these machines are very pivotal in the security system of the Electoral Commission, so they are doing something they know; they know definitely what they want to use it for, and I think that it is going to be very dangerous for us,” he stated.

Mr Mohammed demanded the arrest of the individual responsible for spreading the rumour about the missing BVR equipment in the Electoral Commission office.

According to him, the individual’s claims have caused undue panic and confusion within the electoral process.

He noted that the NDC has propagated this misinformation, alleging that the EC’s request for packing the machines resulted in their disappearance, despite the EC’s assertion to the contrary.

“We are talking about missing BVR. For me I have called for the arrest of the person who has indicated that there is missing BVR in the Electoral Commission office because the NDC has said so and the Electoral Commission told you (that) they ask people to pack machines after registering were done. When they packed them and brought them, they were not up (to number).

“So, if they were not up and you sit down and say that the Electoral Commission is monitored by security personnel, police armoured cars, and those things, mind you, this was done in North Tongu. The North Tongu office is not manned by the military, and what have you done? These officers who were using it are temporary officers of the Electoral Commission.

“Could they be NDC that they took this particular machine, and they are to use them for their purpose and create the agenda that let us say the Electoral Commission has given out or these machines are missing? That is why I am saying that several people have to be arrested in this particular instance,” he noted.

Ernest Norgbey wins NDC polls in Ashaiman constituency

0

Ernest Norgbey, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman constituency, has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries for a third term, cementing his place as the party’s candidate for the constituency in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Mr. Norgbey polled 1,627 votes to emerge victorious in the keenly contested election that saw him defeat his closest rivals, Tony Afenyo and David Worwui-Brown, who polled 1,221 votes and 50 votes, respectively.

The election had approximately 2,898 delegates from 350 branches participating in the voting process at the Africa Advance College in Ashaiman.

The exercise was conducted in a relatively peaceful atmosphere, with the police deployed to ensure orderliness and safety.

In an earlier interview with Citi News, Norgbey expressed confidence in his track record of developmental projects in the constituency, which he believes will translate into an overwhelming endorsement from the delegates.

He also acknowledged the challenges he faced during Tony Afenyo’s tenure as constituency chairman, whom he believed was working against him to fail.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Norgbey was optimistic that he would secure over 70% of the votes, stating that the delegates had faith in his ability to deliver the much-needed development projects to the constituency.

Meanwhile, former president John Mahama, received an overwhelming endorsement from the delegates in Ashaiman garnering almost 99.90% of the vote cast against Kojo Bonsu.

This result has further solidified Mahama’s position as the party’s flagbearer and sets the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested election in 2024.

Carlos Alcaraz loses to Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev wins

0

Carlos Alcaraz won Wimbledon and reached the US Open and French Open semi-finals in 2023

Carlos Alcaraz suffered defeat on his ATP Finals debut as Alexander Zverev fought back to win in Turin, Italy.

Wimbledon champion Alcaraz lost 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 6-4 to Germany’s Zverev, who won the event in 2018 and 2021.

It is the first time the 20-year-old Spaniard has lost three matches in a row since March 2021, when he was ranked outside the world’s top 100.

In the day’s other Red Group singles match, third seed Daniil Medvedev beat fellow Russian Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-2.

In the doubles, Briton Joe Salisbury and American partner Rajeev Ram made a winning start to their title defence with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Australian Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna of India.

And Britain’s Neal Skupski and Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof – who are playing in their final tournament together – began their campaign with a 6-3 6-4 win over Australians Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata.

Alcaraz struggles for consistency

World number two Alcaraz missed last year’s tournament with an abdominal injury and was making his debut at the season-ending men’s event for the world’s top eight players.

He had been hampered by foot and back problems last month and lost in his opening match at the Paris Masters on his return from injury.

His shaky form continued on Monday as he struggled for consistency on the fast indoor hard court against Zverev.

He trailed 3-1 in the opener before breaking back and staved off four break points in his next service game to lead the German for the first time.

Zverev himself saved two set points to force a tie-break, but Alcaraz found some semblance of rhythm to clinch the opener.

However, seventh seed Zverev responded instantly, breaking Alcaraz at the first opportunity as he forced a deciding set.

Zverev played the big points better throughout, saving five of six break points and hitting 16 aces before sealing victory with a service winner.

But there was a worrying moment for the German – who missed last year’s event while recovering from a nasty right ankle injury sustained at the 2022 French Open – when he fell on his left ankle towards the end of the match.

“I didn’t twist my ankle. I kind of slipped. There was a pain for a while and I don’t think any damage has been done,” the ATP Finals website quoted Zverev as saying. “I hope not and we will see when it settles down. It is nothing comparable to Paris.”

Medvedev halts Turin losing run

World number three Daniil Medvedev was defeated in all three of his round-robin matches in Turin last year, losing all of them in third-set tie-breaks.

But the 2020 champion has got off to a much better start this time and was in dominant form against compatriot Rublev, whose increasing frustration boiled over at times.

In a high-quality and draining first set played from the baseline, Medvedev broke in the seventh game but was then tested when serving for the set three games later.

The 2021 US Open champion had to save four break points – helped by some brilliant reflexes at the net – and squandered three set points with some loose play before finally converting his fourth.

Medvedev then ran away with the second, going a double break up after his opponent and good friend slipped on the court while reaching for a shot.

That left Rublev nursing his right hand after he landed on it and he sat with his head in his hands at the changeover, talking to himself and then taking his emotions out on a water bottle.

Medvedev quickly wrapped up victory, serving out to love, to go top of the group above Zverev because he won in straight sets.

The ATP Finals features eight of the year’s best men’s players split into two groups of four, with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals.

Novak Djokovic is the defending champion and secured the year-end number-one status with victory over Denmark’s Holger Rune on Sunday.

The Serb is back in action on Tuesday when he takes on home hope Jannik Sinner (20:00 GMT), while Rune faces Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the other singles match (13:30) in Green Group.

No Budget, Staff For Ministry of Pensions – Government Clarifies | Social

0

The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations has explained that the sector Minister, Ignatius Baffour Awuah has not been assigned to head a new Ministry.

The Ministry in a press release said it had taken note of news reports and social media commentary suggesting that a new Ministry had been created for Pensions with Mr Awuah being appointed as its new sector Minister.

Instead, the release said his designation as the Minister responsible for Pensions was only an additional responsibility to his current role.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no such New Ministry has been created,” the release said.

“Indeed the letter emanating from H.E. the President only seeks to formally assign the two Institutions ie. National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah as additional responsibility.

“The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations will therefore be grateful if all concerned would disregard the erroneous impression being created by the said articles in the media and on various social media platforms”.

No new staff, budget

In a post on Facebook, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin added that Mr Awuah’s new role is only supervisory and no new staff or budget will be allocated to it.

He added that prior to this designation by President Akufo-Addo, the Minister responsible for Pensions was the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Mr Arhin also mentioned that former President John Dramani Mahama’s administration also made a similar designation with the then Minister for Labour and Employment, Haruna Iddrisu, serving additionally as Minister responsible for Pensions

“The designation of the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Baffuor Awuah, as Minister responsible for Pensions, was done in accordance with the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766),” he posted.

“It is not going to be a new Ministry, and neither will it recruit new staff, or be allocated a budget. It is only a supervisory role, especially as Hon. Ignatius Baffuor Awuah is already in charge of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority, the regulator of SSNIT”.

“This is not the first time a Minister has been designated to be responsible for the activities of Pensions in the country. Indeed, following the amendment of the National Pensions Act, 2008, the then Minister for Labour and Employment, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, MP, was assigned by former President John Dramani Mahama as Minister responsible for Pensions. As a result, he assumed responsibility for SSNIT”.

Hebert Wigwe’s daughter, Tochi melts hearts with emotional tribute –

0

Tochi Wigwe, daughter of the deceased CEO of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe has triggered emotions with her heartfelt tribute to her dad describing him as ‘a paradox, a tower of strength with a heart as soft as silk’.

While she was called up to speak, she humorously began by revealing her anxiety towards public speaking.

Tochi Wigwe said “I always used to tell my father that I really hated public speaking, but he tried to convince me that he hated it as well but” it was always something he did under compulsion. “So I’m going to try my best to be fearless.”

Managing to muster strength from within amidst the tears, Tochi began her tribute, to her deceased father, Herbert Wigwe.

“In this moment, for the first time, your words resonate deeply within me. No longer do I want to tilt my head and squint my eyes in confusion. You were simply extraordinary. Amidst my tears, I reflect on the man that you are; driven, determined and always surpassing expectations.

“You urged me to reach new heights I never imagined. Whenever doubts clouded my mind, you will chuckle knowingly and say, ‘you really don’t know whose child you are, you’ll soon find out’ And once again, you were right, I’ve come to find out.

“I can never fathom how you managed to do it all. It seemed inconceivable, turning everything you touched to gold while remaining an unwavering anchor for your family and friends.”

Tochi Wigwe revealed how her father defied distances to see her while schooling abroad.

Cambridge Launches its First Education Programme for 3- to 6-year-olds in Ghana |

0

Cambridge, the worlds largest provider of international education programmes, is launching its first early years education programme which will help support early childhood schooling in Ghana in children as young as 3.

The new play-based programme, which has been developed following a successful roll out in India, has been expertly designed to give children aged 3 to 6 the best start in life, helping them meet key early milestones and thrive in and out of school.

Cambridge Early Years will form the first stage in the Cambridge Pathway, a high-quality and joined-up path for educational success for children aged 3 to 19.

Multiple studies confirm that education during early years is crucial. Research from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Developments (OECD) International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study shows that, among other benefits, a high-quality early childhood education and care (ECEC), compared to an average one, can double the growth in childrens verbal comprehension.

The decision to expand its education pathway will see Cambridge help schools in Ghana and around the world strengthen their early years education provision, something it believes will reap dividends for parents and teachers as children progress through their school careers.

Rod Smith, Group Managing Director for International Education at Cambridge commented:
We all know that the early years of a childs life are crucial to their development. Research shows that the better we support children at this stage, the more positive impact we can have on their future. Our new Cambridge Early Years programme draws on Cambridges unrivalled expertise in high-quality education to help schools in Ghana give children as many exciting and stimulating learning experiences as possible making the most of this key phase of brain development and getting children off to a good start in life.

Play-based learning that supports the transition to primary school

The Cambridge Early Years programme draws on Cambridges worldwide research on curriculum principles from high-performing education systems, as well as analysis of best practice in early years education and the characteristics that have most impact.

The research resulted in 12 key principles that underpin the programme. The principles were developed in collaboration with world-class scholars, researchers and practitioners in early years education. The importance of play-based learning, and the need to move children gradually towards more formal teaching in readiness for primary education, are two of the principles that guided the development of every element of the programme. The principles ensure that children not only acquire knowledge from a young age but also the essential skills to navigate and adapt to a rapidly changing world.

The Cambridge Early Years programme provides a flexible structure to support each childs progress and can be adapted to the needs of different schools in Ghana, providing a bespoke teaching package.

Specially created classroom resources and assessments will help teachers understand each childs progress while fostering their all-round development far beyond the classroom.

Juan Visser, Regional Director, Sub-Saharan Africa for International Education at Cambridge, added: “We know that good early years education can benefit a childs whole academic career and so Im thrilled that we are adding this new stage to the Cambridge Pathway its what schools have been asking for. Our Cambridge Early Years programme brings together the best approaches from around the world with extensive teacher support. We want to help schools in Ghana support childrens long-term development and help them be ready for the world.

Providing coherence to early years education

Cambridges research with schools around the world found that early years provision can be fragmented, drawn from a mix of different resources, curricula, assessment and training. This can make it hard to understand how children are progressing or to determine what approaches have the best impact on their development.

By ensuring all the different elements work well together, Cambridge helps schools give their learners a comprehensive and high-quality early years education.

African Women Are Key To Future Growth – Harris |

0

Women in Africa must be given the opportunity to participate equally in all spheres of life, including in leadership positions, says US Vice-President Kamala Harris.

“It is key to maximizing global growth and opportunity,” she told students in Ghana’s capital, Accra, promising that the US will closely work with its partners to bridge the gender gap.

The US’s first female vice-president is on a three-nation tour of the continent. Speaking on Tuesday, she praised Africa’s ingenuity and creativity but emphasised the need to address challenges, including security, barriers to economic growth and the impact of climate change.

She has already announced $100m (£81m) in funding for the fight against violent extremism. Internet facilities will also be invested in by the US to promote economic growth on the continent, she said.

“Let us dream with ambition and lead with conviction,” the politician told young people in Accra.

A summit on democracy is being organised in Zambia, where Ms Harris will visit after Ghana and Tanzania. The US government says it will continue to work with democratic governments on the continent in line with the aspirations of Africans.

The year ahead (2): Energy and food crises

0

The September 2022 edition of the Chief Economists Outlook highlighted the intensifying human impact of the cost of living crisis, with plunging real wages leading to worsening poverty and more widespread social unrest.

At the start of 2023, these concerns are still evident, and many households confront a dual challenge of facing relatively high costs for basics such as heating and eating, at the same time as feeling the effects of monetary policy designed to curtail inflation in the longer term.

However, survey respondents indicate that the cost of living crisis may be close to its peak as policies begin to take their full effect, and a majority (68 per cent) expect the crisis to be less severe by the end of 2023

However, the continuing impact of the cost of living crisis should not be underestimated. A majority of respondents are of the view that energy and food costs will continue to have an adverse impact on households in both high- and low-income countries throughout 2023.

Looking at global consumer price inflation data, the food and energy categories recorded the sharpest price increases in 2022, pushed up by a confluence of factors including war, multiple supply chain shocks and commodity market disruption.

Optimism

However, there are some reasons for optimism about food price trends. For example, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Food Price Index recently returned to the same level as before the invasion of Ukraine, following the extension of the Black Sea deal that facilitates exports of grain from Ukraine’s ports.

On energy costs, over 80 per cent of respondents expect a significant adverse impact in both developing and developed economies.

On food costs, there is a notable divergence in the expected impact between high- and low-income countries. This is reflected in the much higher proportion of chief economists saying that food costs are extremely likely to have significant adverse impact in low income economies (50 per cent) compared to high-income economies (14 per cent).

Overall, an adverse impact on living standards from food costs is expected by 69 per cent in high income economies and 86 per cent in low-income economies.

This is also evident in the hard data, with low-income countries recording food price inflation of 29 per cent, compared to a global average of 19 per cent.

The World Food Programme now estimates up to 222 million

In addition to rising prices for goods and services, significant increases in borrowing costs are beginning to place an additional strain on household finances.

According to the survey results, there is again a significant divergence between the impact in high-income and low-income economies. In the former, 68 per cent of respondents expect debt servicing costs to have an adverse impact, but only nine per cent say this is extremely likely rather than somewhat likely.

For low income economies, a total of 81 per cent expect an adverse impact, and a much higher proportion (45 per cent ) see this as extremely likely.

On the income side of the cost-of-living squeeze, the respondents expect wage dynamics to have a relatively less adverse impact on households than other cost categories.

Global wages data are patchy and subject to a significant lag, but the latest estimates from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) point to global real wage growth dropping from an average of 1.8 per cent in 2021 to register a year-on-year decline of 0.9 per cent in the first half of 2023.

According to these data, real wages slumped sharply in North America and the EU during this period, falling by 3.2 per cent and 2.4 per cent, respectively, while most other regions recorded slow real wage growth rather than declines.

Relatively, tight labour markets in Europe and North America helped to limit the decline of real wages, while reopening various sectors after lockdowns has led to wage growth, albeit from low levels, in several developing economies.

However, chief economists are split over whether labour markets will remain as tight over the coming year, given the tepid growth prospects, posing a significant potential risk to the expectation of the cost of living crisis ebbing by year-end.

Progress on the energy emergency

Turning to the energy crisis, the majority of respondents (64 per cent) show optimism about the overall trajectory of the crisis in 2023, while also highlighting the need for numerous short-term and long-term policies to deal with challenges that remain to be resolved.

Oil prices have fallen back to prewar levels, but the same is not true of global gas prices, which in November 2022 were 321 per cent higher than two years previously.

The expectation that the energy crisis will be less severe by the end of 2023 reflects the current stress-testing and improvement of systems and processes, diversification of energy supply sources, improved energy efficiency and changing patterns of consumption. Progress in a range of these areas is already evident in Europe, for example, including a tripling of gas reserves, the securing of new supply deals, and a trimming of gas consumption by 15 per cent.

Nevertheless, the crisis remains far from resolved. The survey asked chief economists for their views on the effectiveness of a range of options designed to deal with short-term and long-term challenges posed by the crisis for energy-importing countries. Of the short-term measures, reduction of energy consumption is the preferred one, with 55 per cent of respondents describing it as effective and a further 27 per cent as highly effective.

In addition to easing immediate pressure on the energy system and helping to avoid the worst case scenario of blackouts, reducing energy consumption also minimises the work that needs to be done by other policy responses.

Energy policy to address the crisis

Most of the other policy approaches considered by the chief economists were also viewed as being effective or highly effective by the majority.

However, the use of energy price caps stands out as the most contested option, with an almost equal split between those viewing caps as effective and as ineffective.

This is unsurprising, given the intensity of debate that has surrounded the introduction of a price cap for gas in the EU, including concerns about its potential implications for the financial stability of the Eurozone.

The EU gas price cap, as well as a G7 oil price cap, were approved in December 2022, and it will be some months before there is clear evidence as to their effectiveness.

On long-term energy policies, chief economists were asked to focus on the effectiveness of various measures in terms of achieving energy security for net-importing economies.

Reducing consumption again features prominently, with 86 per cent viewing it as an effective strategy, but is in third place overall.

Improved energy efficiency is the clear front runner, with unanimity among respondents as to its effectiveness in the long term.

This is in line with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) view that energy efficiency is central to the shift that needs to take place in advanced economies.

Many countries, particularly in Europe, have already begun to move in this direction in response to the crisis. Germany for example, has introduced higher efficiency standards for new buildings, and France launched its “Energy Sobriety” plan in October 2022.

Long-term energy security

Among the other policy options presented, diversification of sources of energy imports were seen as the second most effective option – 90 per cent view it as effective, including 45 per cent as highly effective, the largest proportion for any of the options.

This option will be crucial in Europe, even in the short term. The EU’s ban on oil-product imports from Russia takes effect in February 2023, while reserves of natural gas are projected to be depleted by March 2023.

Although the war in Ukraine is central to the energy crisis in Europe, global security-of-supply concerns in 2023 are unlikely to be driven only by developments in the war. For example, if China’s easing of its zero-COVID restrictions is successful, it is likely to push up demand for liquified natural gas (LNG) and oil products, including diesel, which is becoming increasingly scarce.

Business in the new landscape, Expectations of rough terrain

As the world puts another tumultuous year behind it, chief economists were asked for their views about some of the likely headwinds that businesses in particular are going to face in 2023.

They were also asked about the most effective responses to these headwinds and sources of optimism, which are addressed in the next section.

Among the headwinds, weak demand, higher interest rates and higher input costs stand out. Nine out of ten respondents expect weak demand to exert a significant drag on business activity this year, and almost the same proportion (87 per cent) expect the same of elevated borrowing costs.

Over 60 per cent expect higher input costs to exert a significant drag.

The start of 2023 represents the triple challenge of continued relatively high prices of key inputs meeting tightening monetary policy and weakening demand.

Energy prices are a key factor here, which in turn means that Europe will be particularly exposed, owing to the impact of the war in Ukraine.

According to one recent estimate, the rate of increase of European input costs is set to outpace those of other advanced economies by as much as 20 percentage points from this year, threatening the competitiveness of the region’s producers and running the risk of diverting supply chains and business activity away from the region. Pigeon Carrying A Backpack Arrested After It Was Caught Attempting To Deliver Drugs In A Canadian Prison | Social

0

A pigeon carrying a miniature backpack filled with drugs has been captured at a prison in Canada. The incident took place last month on December 29, at the maximum, medium and minimum federal penitentiary located in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Speaking to Global News, John Randle, president of the Pacific Region for Union of Canadian Correctional, said, “A pigeon was located at Pacific Institution, inside the walls and it appeared to have a small package, sort of like a backpack attached to it.”

According to Mr Randle, the miniature backpack that the bird was carrying had crystal meth stashed inside. The pigeon was found near one of the recreation yards at the institution. Officers were standing in one of the fenced inmate unit yards – which prisoners use regularly for hanging out, playing games or just getting some fresh air – when they noticed a grey bird with a small package attached to its back.

Living in Accra isn’t easy, I spend about GH¢800 daily – Kyekyeku –

0

Ghanaian actor Kyekyeku has opened up about his daily expenses since recently relocating to Accra as he prepares for the premiere of his movie titled ‘1957.’

He stated that since moving to Accra, the cost of living has been higher than in his usual location, Kumasi, where prices of goods and services are more affordable.

While discussing how he is coping with the cost of living, the actor disclosed that he spends approximately GH¢700 to GH¢800 daily on food, fuel, and other expenses.

“Accra is a nice place but the cost of living is something else. For Kumasi, prices of goods are average and affordable but Accra is a bit higher. An item that costs GH¢20 in Kumasi will be GH¢25 in Accra. I think the fact that it’s the capital town contributes to it.

“With my daily expenses, taking into consideration my fuel, food and other petty things, I could spend about GH¢700 to GH¢800,” Kyekyeku said during an interview with Zionfelix monitored by GhanaWeb.

When asked why he relocated from Kumasi to Accra, he responded, “I moved to Accra recently to prepare for the premiere of my movie [1957] and to get to know the people.”

Kyekyeku’s movie will be premiered at the National Theatre in Accra on April 27, 2024.

Why do you boycott Parliament yet attend committee meetings

0

The Majority in Parliament has described the boycott of Parliamentary business activities in the Chamber by the Minority Caucus as wrong.

The Majority says although the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators have for the fourth time abandoned business activities in the Chamber over the prosecution of James Gyakye Quayson, the Minority has shockingly chosen to partake in committee meetings in Parliament.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament, the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh says the Minority must be ashamed for choosing which parliamentary duties to partake in.

“The Minority must bury their heads in shame because the decision is very unpopular, and the leadership is divided about it. If you want to boycott Parliament, boycott it in its entirety, don’t pick and choose, you go for committee meetings and yet you say you won’t come to the Chamber.”

He also indicated that it is baffling because the decisions that will be taken at the committee level will eventually be brought to the Chamber for final deliberations.

“At the end of the day, all the deliberations whether it is a referral by the Speaker, a bill, or some agreement, it will eventually be referred to the Chamber for it to be debated or adopted or otherwise and so why will you decide which one you want to part of.”

“The decision to go for committee meetings and not participate in the Chamber is not right, and it is not a principled position.”

Milestone Achievement: Mbagathi Hospital Successfully Conducts First Cementless Total Hip Replacement Surgery

0

In Nairobi County, Mbagathi Hospital has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by performing Kenya’s first Cementless Total Hip Replacement surgery. This surgical feat took place on Tuesday in the recently unveiled state-of-the-art theater at the facility.

The health facility announced this breakthrough on Wednesday, commending the new leadership for spearheading transformative initiatives.

“Yesterday, under the leadership of Dr. Athumani, an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon, the surgical team at Mbagathi County Hospital achieved a groundbreaking milestone – the first-ever Cementless Total Hip Replacement surgery. This remarkable procedure took place in the hospital’s recently modernized theatre, a testament to the transformative initiatives undertaken during the CEO’s tenure at the facility,” Mbagathi Hospital said.

The hospital also acknowledged the efforts of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in ensuring that all Level Five Hospitals are led by CEOs, as they actively advocate for the donation of medical equipment.

“The idea of our Governor @SakajaJohnson and Super DG @JNjorogeMuchiri introducing CEOs to run level 5 hospitals was the best decision. Hospitals are being run in a more professional way. We are seeing Mbagathi receiving donations day in and day out, which are lobbied by the CEO,” stated Mbagathi.

A Cementless Total Hip Replacement surgery is a medical procedure in orthopedic surgery where the damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial ceramic implant without the use of bone cement.

In a traditional hip replacement, bone cement is often used to attach artificial components to the patient’s existing bone.

However, in a cementless procedure, the artificial components are designed with a porous surface that allows the patient’s bone to grow into the implant, providing stability.

The ceramic surface is exceptionally smooth, experiences less wear compared to metal surfaces, and is resistant to scratches.

Followers on Instagram after dethroning Kylie Jenner as the most-followed female on the platform

Selena Gomez has became the first woman to have 400 million Instagram followers on Friday, just weeks after dethroning Kylie Jenner as the social media platform.

On her heels is Kylie Jenner, who has a whopping 382 million fans on the app, which she uses to share photos of her life and promote her makeup brand, Kylie Cosmetics.

Gomez, 30, is the third most followed person on Instagram behind soccer players Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 562 followers, and Lionel Messi, who has 442 million people watching his every move.

The feat comes less than a month after surpassing Jenner as the most-followed woman on the social media platform.

The Wolves singer was previously the most followed woman on the site back in 2019 before Ariana Grande beat her to the post, with Kylie, 25, later overtaking them.

Selena Gomez has made history by becoming the first woman to reach 400 million followers on Instagram. The Only Murders in the Building star achieved the milestone shortly after surpassing Kylie Jenner as the most followed female on the platform.

Despite being the third most followed person on Instagram behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Gomez’s fans have proclaimed her the queen of the social media platform.

In response to the news, the Wolves singer expressed her gratitude to her fans and friends, while also announcing she would be taking a break from social media.

Guiu, 17, gets winner 33 seconds into Barca debut

0

Marc Guiu scored with just his second touch in senior football

Marc Guiu scored the winner 33 seconds into his senior debut to give Barcelona a 1-0 home win over Athletic Bilbao.

The 17-year-old Spanish forward came on for fellow youngster Fermin Lopez in the 79th minute and struck almost immediately.

It means he has scored his first league goal for Barcelona quicker than any other player in the club’s history.

Victory took third-placed Barca back within a point of leaders Real Madrid, who they face next Saturday.

Earlier on Sunday, Girona won 5-2 at home to Almeria to go level with Real, who drew 1-1 at Sevilla on Saturday.

Guiu was added to Barca’s senior squad as coach Xavi has several players out through injury, including Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong.

A Joao Felix shot clipped the top of the crossbar from a Ferran Torres cut-back in the first half while Nico Williams had a shot saved by home goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Just before the hour mark, visiting keeper Unai Simon saved Felix’s low striker before denying Lopez from the rebound.

Then 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest scorer in La Liga history earlier this month, dragged a shot wide before fellow substitute Guiu slotted the ball past Simon after being played in by Felix.

Angry residents of Dome Parakou block main road after downpour

0

Angry residents around the Dome Parakou Estate Junction blocked the major stretch to protest the poor drainage system constructed some months ago.

According to the residents, the construction was poorly done leaving them vulnerable anytime it rains.

The residents say the poor construction makes their rooms get flooded and properties destroyed anytime there is heavy rainfall.

“It was around 3:30 am that the rain started and the rainwaters came and flooded everywhere. I am a mechanic and I am lucky that there were no cars here when the flood came else it would have spoilt them.

“The contractor working on the bridge is to blame. The bridge is too small, he should have raised it and so we are begging the government to let him raise the bridge just like it has been done at Alajo and Achimota,” a resident, Enoch Sarpei told Channel One TV‘s Samuel Ackom.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Municipal Director for Ga East, Seth Kofi Osei Kissi said education has intensified for the people to move away from there which they have persistently resisted.

“I had a distress call around 5:30 am that residents of Christian Village, a community at the boundary between Dome-Kwabenya and Okaikoi North have blocked the road with containers and barrels and cars were not moving meanwhile that place is a busy point and so there was heavy traffic there in the morning. It took the intervention of one NADMO man who engaged the people before they could move things and allow traffic to follow.

“We have gone there to educate them that the rains will be heavy this year and so they should move away from there because when it rains, it floods there up to window level but they are still living there.”

Rainbow Productions is set to premiere its debut movie titled ‘EVOR’ on March 6 at the Silverbird Cinemas in Accra, with showings at 7pm and 9pm.

‘EVOR,’ an Ewe word meaning ‘It’s Finished,’ is a compelling drama inspired by real-life events that explore the profound impact of domestic abuse and the complexities faced by those affected.

The film follows the story of Dela, who is facing a potential 20-year prison sentence. Dela’s narrative delves into years of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse endured by the person who was supposed to love her.

Starting from the crime scene, ‘EVOR’ unravels the layers of their love story, revealing the tumultuous incidents of abuse, including the loss of a child and infidelity.

The film sheds light on Dela’s futile attempts to seek help from family, friends, the church, and the police, leading to the culmination of that fateful day. The film serves as a poignant exploration of societal failure to intervene during years of unchecked abuse.

Speaking to the press, producer and actor Sitsofe Tsikor expressed, “EVOR is a work of art that we have put our hearts and backs into. We have made a film that will go a long way to change people’s thoughts, and we can’t wait for you all to see it.”

The film features a cast of Ghanaian talents, including Adjetey Anang, Brian Angels, Fred Amugi, Pascaline Edwards, Abeiku Santana, Myna Otoo, Naa Ashokor Mensah-Doku, and others.

‘EVOR’ has already secured an official selection at this year’s edition of The African Film Festival (TAFF).

Owusu Bemaph Sends Strong Warning to Black Stars Coach Ahead of Ghana’s Match With Mozambique

0

Controversial man of God, Rev. Owusu Bempah has sent a stern warning to Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton ahead of Ghana’s match with Mozambique.

Speaking with Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie on Accra-based Okay FM has said that the Black Stars coach should bench Odoi.

Owusu Bempah claims coach Chris Hughton should find a replacement for the aforementioned Black Stars player else Ghana will lose the match against Mozabique.

“If the coach is listening to me, our number 2 Odoi should not start against Mozambique. You could see he was our major problem. The coach should find someone else to play that area”, he said.

He added that even though Salisu is a very good player, he is not fit enough to play Ghana’s match against Mozambique.

“Salisu is a very good player but this tournament is not for him. I hear he was hurt for a long time before we went to Ivory Coast but he has to be changed”, he added.

While speaking to his congregation, the man asked his congregants if they could permit him to disclose the scores in Ghana’s match against Mozambique.

He stated categorically that he has watched the match twice in the spiritual realms so he already knows what will happen.

In his conclusion, the man of God ordered his congregants to fight anyone who tried to give negative comments about his disclosure.

Did Dafeamekpor, other NDC bigwigs goof over their ‘Ghana is now buying Cocoa’ bombshell? –

0

Leading members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were up in arms on social media blasting the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government over the ‘import’ of cocoa beans from Cote D’Ivoire and Nigeria.

The NDC bigwigs, including the likes of the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor and special aid to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mugtari, went on overdrive while reacting to an approval notice by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) permitting a private company, AFROTROPIC Cocoa Beans Processing Company Limited, to import 3,500 tonnes of cocoa from Cote D’Ivoire and Nigeria.

“Ghana now reduced to importing Cocoa Beans under this inept administration! My brothers and sisters, this is where Bawumia and Akufo Addo have brought us…” Bawa Mugtari wrote on X.

Dafeamekpor also wrote “Bombshell: Ghana is now buying Cocoa from Cote D’Ivoire & Nigeria under this Govt. We are buying 3500 tonnes from them in a letter dated 25th Jan 2024. Yet, we were told by this Govt in 2022 led by Dr. Afriyie Akoto, that they’ve doubled our cocoa production. The fundamentals…”

Well, is there anything wrong with Ghana importing cocoa merely because it is a leading producer of the crop in the world? Has there been any precedence?

Importation of cocoa into Ghana in 2016 under Mahama:

The leadership of COCOBOD during the government of former President John Dramani Mahama admitted that a private company in the country imported cocoa into Ghana while dismissing reports that the country was now importing the crop.

In a press statement issued in Accra, COCOBOD disclosed that it is rather a local company, Barry Callebaut that imported 15,000 tonnes of small-size beans from Cote d’Ivoire.

Local processing companies, the statement added, processed 160,000 tonnes of small-size beans during the 2014/15 season, out of which, Barry Callebaut imported 15,000 tonnes from Cote D’Ivoire.

“Ghana Cocoa Board sells the small size beans to local processing companies at a discount of 20% because this type of cocoa is of lower quality as compared to the big size beans. The big-size beans is of a higher quality and is sold on the international market at a premium.

“Ghana is known for the production of premium quality cocoa beans. On the average, only 10 – 15% of cocoa produced in Ghana is small-size beans which is sold at a 20% discount to the local processing companies. 85-90% is big size beans which is of premium quality and is sold on the international market at a premium,” the statement stressed.

The then Minister for Finance, Seth Terkper, was reported to have said that the government is permitting the importation of cocoa beans from Cote d’Ivoire to feed local factories due to a shortfall in the commodity.

Seth Terkper is reported to have told parliament that the importation of cocoa beans into Ghana was not a new thing and had been done in 2005 and 2008, as he was justifying the importation of cocoa into the country then.

COCOBOD granting permission of cocoa to be imported in Ghana in 2016

Is it wrong for a major producer of a good to import them?:

In international trade, there is nothing wrong with a country importing goods they already produce in large quantities. Demand for import of a country’s major export is often driven by taste and quantity of products among other factors.

For instance, Nigeria is 4th highest cocoa producer globally but it still imports the product. Also, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are all major exporters of cheese but they also import huge quantities of the commodity into their countries.

In fact, oil-producing giants like the United States and Saudi Arabia still import oil. So, it is not a crime to import products you are a major exporter of.

What Are The Jersey Numbers For Every Black Galaxies Player Competing In CHAN 2023 In Algeria?

0

The 7th edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) commenced in Algeria on Friday, January 13, 2023.

After an exciting opening ceremony in Algiers, Algeria faced the competition’s first champions, Libya, at the Baraki Stadium.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Ghana’s Black Galaxies’ 2023 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) jersey numbers.

The adorably talented staff of editors at www.atspo.com has discovered the jersey numbers of Annor Walker’s team, which will play for the trophy for the first time since 2014.

Annor Walker and his charges left the shores of Ghana for Egypt on the eve of the festive season, preparing for the tournament with 25 official players from the local league.

Although notable players who should have automatically made the final squad failed, their replacements were entirely satisfactory, especially Mohammed Alhassan, who played an integral role in the qualifiers and should have been part of Annor Walker’s final list for Algeria.

Some notable players that fought hard for the Black Galaxies to earn a qualification slot for the CHAN competition are Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Danlad Ibrahim, Dennis Nkrumah Korsah, David Abagna, and, to an extent, Jonah Attuquaye, whose numbers have been approved by CAF.

The Black Galaxies have switched camp bases from Algeria, after a series of pre-CHAN friendly games in Egypt and Algeria, to Constantine, where they are scheduled to play all their group games at the Mohammed Hamlaoui Stadium.

The Black Galaxies will face Madagascar in their opening match in Group C at 19:00 GMT on January 15. They will play two more group games against defending champions Morocco over the next four days, but reports indicate that they have officially withdrawn from the competition.

Gladson Awako, the team’s captain, will wear jersey number 11, while close friends Danlad Ibrahim and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh will wear numbers 16 and 18, respectively.

The table below shows the players’ names, jersey numbers, and local clubs of the Black Galaxies at the CHAN Tournament in Algeria.

Solomon Adomako of Great Olympics will wear jersey number 4, Konadu Yiadom of Hearts of Oak will wear jersey number 5, and Kwame Otuo of Vision FC will wear jersey number 6. Stephen Odai Kwaku of Great Olympics will wear jersey number 1, Augustine Randolph of Karela United will wear jersey number 2, and Benjamin Aidoo of Medeama SC will wear jersey number 3. Sylvester Simba of Dreams FC is anticipated to don jersey number 7. Dominic Nsobila of the Accra Lions is in position twelve; Asante Kotoko’s Augustine Agyapong is in position thirteen; and Kotoko’s Sheriff Mohammed is in position fourteen. Berekum Henry Ansu of Chelsea wears jersey number 15, Danlad Ibrahim, the team’s starting goalkeeper, wears number 16, Augustine Boakye of Kotoku Royals wears jersey number 17, and Daniel Johnson of Hearts of Oak wears jersey number 18.

Liberia’s President-elect Boakai to review mining concessions

Liberian President-elect Joseph Boakai, who defeated President George Weah in the Nov. 14 presidential runoff, says his administration will have a close look at mining concessions to ensure they benefit the country.

Boakai, 78, a former vice president who lost to Weah in the 2017 runoff and campaigned on a promise to “rescue” Liberia, told Reuters in an interview on Sunday evening that he expected a lot of challenges, particularly with the economy.

“The first step of rescuing Liberia is taking it from these people. It has been rescued. The next thing is to deal with the issues that have being hanging over this country,” Boakai said, citing corruption and lack of basic services.

Boakai said a key area from which Liberians had not benefited was the mining sector, despite the West African country’s rich mineral reserves, including diamonds, gold, iron ore and timber.

“To be frank with you, the mining sector has been one of the problems in this country. I have seen our resources exploited and the life of the people remains the worse,” Boakai said, adding that he would have a close look at the sector.

Asked if this would include reviewing mining concessions, Boakai said reviews would be pursued if warranted.

“We have to, because we are inheriting,” he said.

Several companies operate in Liberia’s mining sector, including ArcelorMittal (MT.LU) and Bao Chico Resources in iron ore mining concessions, Bea Mountain Mining and Avesoro Resources, which operates Liberia’s first commercial gold mine in gold.

Liberia’s economy grew 4.8% in 2022, driven by gold production and a relatively good rice harvest, but more than 80% of the population still face moderate or severe food insecurity, according to the World Bank.

Ghana’s AIDS-related deaths grow by 33% –

0

Ghana is facing a concerning rise in HIV-related deaths, with new data revealing a staggering 33% increase in fatalities in 2023.

According to reports from the Ghana AIDS Commission, 12,480 Ghanaians lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses last year, compared to 9,359 deaths recorded in 2022.

Unfortunately, deaths resulting from AIDS recorded for persons of all ages were 9,359.

The 2022 statistics show that Adults (15+ years) were 7,179; children (0-14 years) 2,180; adolescents (10–19 years) 645 and young people (15–24 years) were 739.

The rise in deaths comes amidst a backdrop of increasing HIV infections, with 17,774 new cases reported in 2023. Females accounted for a significant majority of new infections, comprising 63.67% of the total cases, while males made up the remaining 36.32%.

Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, has expressed deep concern over the alarming trend, highlighting the need for urgent action to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in the country.

He emphasized that many of the recent deaths were preventable with timely access to appropriate treatments and comprehensive healthcare services.

Despite progress in HIV treatment availability, Ghana continues to face challenges in achieving the global 95-95-95 targets by 2025.

These targets aim to have 95% of people living with HIV aware of their status, 95% of those diagnosed on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95% of those on ART achieving viral suppression. In 2023, Ghana achieved 65.3%, 69.4%, and 89.0% for the respective targets, indicating the need for accelerated efforts and collaborative initiatives to improve outcomes.

Dr. Atuahene called for increased efforts to combat AIDS, particularly among the economically active population aged 15 to 49, emphasizing that addressing the AIDS epidemic should be a national priority in Ghana.

He stressed the importance of education, awareness, and access to preventive measures and treatment services in reducing new infections and preventing HIV-related deaths.

As Ghana grapples with the impact of HIV/AIDS, there is an urgent need for coordinated action from government agencies, healthcare providers, civil society organizations, and the private sector to curb the spread of the virus and improve outcomes for those affected.

Do you need to wash your eggs? The answer may surprise you

0

File photo

Eggs may contain various types of bacteria, microorganisms and other contaminants.

Do you need to wash eggs? Yes and no

Eggs have been controversial for years. Experts are still arguing whether they are healthy or whether we should be careful with them and limit their quantity.

Eggs may contain various types of bacteria, microorganisms and other contaminants. Fortunately, the shell is an effective barrier against them and protects the egg white and yolk. It would seem that in such a situation, washing the eggs after purchasing and putting the clean ones in the refrigerator would be a wise solution. Unfortunately, this is not the case at all.

Experts warn against washing eggs because not only do we remove impurities from them, but we also damage the natural coating, which additionally protects the shell. Once it is destroyed, bacteria can more easily penetrate our egg and lead to infection. Washing eggs also shortens their freshness.

So what should we do? Store eggs in a separate container so that the shells do not come into contact with other products or directly touch the shelves in the refrigerator. And remember to wash your hands with warm water and soap if you have previously held eggs.

Does this mean that eggs do not need to be washed? Not completely. The truth is that eggs should not be washed unless you intend to use them immediately. Until then, it is better to leave them without contact with water. Alternatively, you can gently remove larger dirt from the shell surface using a cloth or paper.

And when should you wash eggs? Only when we are going to eat them. Many people do not do this, assuming that they do not eat the shell, only its contents. However, when breaking, bacteria or other microorganisms may get onto the egg white and yolk. This happens, for example, when making scrambled eggs.

If you cook the eggs soft or hard, there is no need to wash them first. High temperature will neutralize the threat.

Eating raw eggs is controversial and poses a risk of salmonella. To minimise them, be sure to scald the egg shells in boiling water first. The Sanitary and Epidemiological Station recommends pouring boiling water over them, soaking them for two to three minutes, then pouring out the water and rinsing them with running water.

A very important thing that many people forget about is washing your hands before preparing meals. Research shows that nearly 65% do not do this. consumers. Placing unwashed eggs next to other food products or on surfaces on which we later place fruit or bread also poses a significant threat.

You’re lucky, if it were to be another religion, your house would’ve been on fire by now – Arnold tells Mzbel –

0

Entertainment pundit, Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has criticized musician cum entrepreneur, Mzbel and her son for making uncouth comments about God which tend to undermine his supremacy.

He believes Mzbel’s son is lucky for criticizing the Christian religion, as he thinks that if it were a certain religion, their house would have been set on fire by now.

The entertainment pundit blamed Christians for being too liberal and not taking action against Mzbel’s son for his blasphemous comment that has sparked outrage in public.

Speaking as a pundit on the United Showbiz programme on Saturday, November 4, 2023, and monitored by GhanaWeb, Arnold chided Mzbel’s son for saying he does not believe in God.

“The Bible-believing people are too liberal and we have seen it all over the world. If he [Mzbel’s son] had said this about a different religion, by now their house would been on fire. There would have been a huge protest against them and they wouldn’t have had it easy at all,” he said.

Arnold further added, “What shocked me about his comment was when he said ‘By now even God is roaming to look for food somewhere.’ A lot of people hold reverence for the person you are disrespecting in high esteem.

“So if you ridicule somebody like that, don’t you expect some level of reaction? He is fortunate. Yes, he is a child, but if it were to be other religions that don’t tolerate some of these things, it would have been a different issue by now.”

His reaction comes after Mzbel’s 10-year-old son stated in an interview shared on social media in which he claimed that he does not believe in the existence of God and Jesus Christ because it is his mother who caters to him.

His claims were met with vehement criticisms by the general public.

DP Gachagua Reassures UN Agencies in Kenya of Government Partnership

0

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured the United Nations agencies in Kenya of the Government’s enhanced partnership in the implementation of their development goals and targets.

The Deputy President on Wednesday told representatives of 24 UN agencies in Kenya that the Ruto Administration will continue collaborating and working with them in joint development programmes.

Speaking during the UN-Kenya partnership meeting held at the Official Residence of the Deputy President in Karen, Gachagua said there is nexus on priorities and mandate of the UN agencies in Kenya and the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) Plan.

Hence, the need for collaboration and partnership.

“Continuous engagement with partners is the ‘modus operadi’ of the Ruto administration. A good idea should give room to a better idea and a better idea give room to the best idea. None of us has monopoly on knowledge. Continuous engagement enriches our knowledge,” said the Deputy President.

He added that the Government will work with the agencies in the implementation of 2022-2026 Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.

Resulting from the cooperation of the UN and the government, he noted that the UN Co-operation Framework for Kenya supports and aligns with the government’s main development priorities, for the economy and society.

“I commend the UN Kenya for the strategic set of joint programmes being developed by line ministries and UN entities, together with a wide range of stakeholders.  These UN-supported joint programmes cover priorities that go hand in glove with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the recently launched Medium Term Plan (MTP IV),” said the Deputy President.

Highlighting humanitarian response and strategic plans of the UN in Kenya, the Deputy President said the activities of the global organization respond to Kenya’s core development priorities, as captured in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and the Climate Positive development agenda.

He also lauded the UN and development partners for collaborating with the government in response to the devastating drought occasioned by five consecutive failed rainy seasons and the devastating El Nino flooding in 2023 into 2024.

The Deputy President said the agencies reinforced the longstanding urgency of bolstering food security, humanitarian response and resilience.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya Dr Stephen Jackson said the UN agencies in Kenya have aligned their development programs with the core pillars of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Dr Jackson said the UN agencies will continue engaging and partnering with the government in the implementation of Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework Kenya (2022-2026).

“BETA for us means leaving no one behind. We are speaking to and committed to the same thing and this is pragmatic alignment. The cooperation framework runs for four years and our vision is to mobilize $2.2 (Ksh290.4 billion) for its implementation. We have mobilized quite a bit,” said Dr Jackson.

Pillars of the government’s bottom-up economic model are Agricultural Transformation; Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Economy; Healthcare; Housing and Settlement; and Digital Superhighway and Creative Industry.

The Wednesday meeting was also convened to highlight achievements of the UN Kenya in 2023 and outlook for 2024.

In his remarks, the Deputy President said Kenya welcomes the commitment by the UN Resident Coordinator that the UN Cooperation Framework will respond to the emerging development needs in Kenya and to the priorities of the government.

He also assured the development partners that the President William Ruto’s administration will continue engaging them for socio-economic growth of the country.

New mom’s sister says she’s ‘not a real mother, wife’ because her husband helps her

0

New parents are often told one resounding narrative of how parenthood operates, repeated so often it becomes a sort of gospel.

They’re told they’ll be exhausted, and they’ll never get a full night’s sleep again. There are endless piles of laundry, constant diaper changes, along with all the emotional highs and lows involved in caretaking.

Yet as one new mom explained on the subreddit r/AITAH, not all entry points into parenthood have to be quite so hard.

The new mom described a conflict with her older sister, Jennie, who has three kids of her own, explaining, “Jennie gave me several warnings about postpartum depression and how hard the baby will be on my marriage.”

The mom explained that her postpartum experience was actually wonderful, full of practical and emotional support from her husband and his family. She noted, “I’m extremely lucky and privileged in my situation and I acknowledge that.”

“I married a man who comes from a culture where women are doted on and not allowed to take on any chores outside of the baby within the first year postpartum,” she stated. “For the first 2 months, all I did was look after our daughter. My husband and his family took care of everything else.”

Her husband took two months of parental leave from work. Her husband’s family cooked their meals and helped clean their house. She explained, “They say that’s what’s normal in their culture… a woman who has just given birth should be taken care of.”

“It makes me emotional just thinking of how much they’ve done for us and how beautiful my experience in motherhood has been so far,” she said, recognizing that her experience is very different from that of other moms, especially those who give birth in the U.S.

She recounted a conversation she had with Jennie, in which she mentioned that she was making her husband’s favourite meal to welcome him back from a business trip. Jennie responded, “Normal women call that just being a mother and a wife, but it’s just a fun activity for you.”

The new mom’s sister told her that she doesn’t ‘sound like a real mother and wife’ because she’s had so much postpartum support.

The mom defended herself, saying, “Not struggling 24/7 doesn’t mean I’m less of a mother.” She told her sister that she sounded “jealous and bitter and that I’m not going to apologize for not struggling as much as she did.”

“I don’t regret it,” the mom stated. “But she ranted to our brother and he told me I was being too harsh instead of understanding why seeing me live an easier life than her would be hard on her.”

A tweet from the account AskAubry noted, “Her sister is mad at the wrong person.”

People on Reddit acknowledged that the differences between the two women’s postpartum experiences indicate how deeply American society has failed moms. As one person eloquently explained, the challenges that Jennie went through in her postpartum period hinged on “living in a society that is pro-birth, not pro-child, pro-mother, pro-community, or pro-mutual aid.”

“She’s angry and upset at the way the system has failed her without recognizing that it is the system that failed her — not you — and she’s lashing out at you because it hurts to see you receiving the support that every woman inherently wants (and deserves) postpartum,” they stated.

“It’s sad how we expect motherhood to mean suffering and stress,” noted someone else. “Your husband’s cultural practices sound lovely, and honestly the way things should be when a new life is brought into the family. It’s a lot of work spread among many hands.”

The new mom’s postpartum experience shows how truly beneficial it is for parents to receive tangible support. The aim of her sister’s anger was off, yet her reaction proves that the way motherhood is structured in America causes harm on every level.

Shakira allegedly discovered Gerard Piqué’s cheating because of a jam jar

0

Well, this isn’t a sweet treat.

Shakira allegedly realized her longtime love Gerard Piqué was cheating on her when she realized her jam was disappearing.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer returned home from travelling and became suspicious over the missing fruit spread because the famed soccer player and their kids all hate jam, according to ShowNews Today.

Shakira appeared to allude to this tart turn of events in the music video for her and Rauw Alejandro’s single “Te Felicito,” in which she can be seen opening a refrigerator, only to discover Alejandro’s head on a platter.

Although the Colombian pop star and Piqué’s breakup began amicably in June 2022 after 11 years together, it since has soured with the release of her scalding diss track “BZRP Session #53,” in which she takes aim at her ex and his new 23-year-old girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti.

“You left me my mother-in-law as my neighbour / Media outlets at my door and in debt with the government,” Shakira, 45, sings in Spanish in the new tune, referencing her tax trial.

Following the track’s release, Shakira allegedly turned a witch doll on her balcony and placed it facing in the direction of Piqué’s mother’s house. The athlete, 35, hasn’t responded to Shakira’s new tune.

Earlier this month, Page Six exclusively revealed that Shakira was “devastated” when she realized Marti was in the background of one of Piqué’s Zoom calls he did from home in 2021 — when the now-former couple were still very much together.

A source told PageSix that the “Waka Waka” singer was “devastated to learn that this woman clearly felt at home in the house they shared with their children.”

Shakira was away travelling with her and Piqué’s kids, Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, when he conducted the interview, but “they were very much still together at that time,” according to the insider, who added, “It’s devastating for her to learn that this affair had been going on for a lot longer than she imagined.”

The exes lived together in Barcelona, Spain, for eight years, but we’ve learned Shakira and their children are moving back to Miami.

NPP Elders Salute Party –

0

Stephen Ayesu Ntim

The National Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has congratulated the party for successful primaries for parliamentary candidates across the country.

The elders in a statement said, “to the contestants the Council wishes to extend appreciation for a competition well done.

“To the victors and losing aspirants, you have made us proud with your hard work and determination. All of you gave your best slots and that’s what counts. In an intraparty competition it is not about winning or losing, it is about how we play the game. In fact you are all champions.”

The bigger battle, however, lies ahead, the elders cautioned adding that, “we should not allow the initial success blind us to rest on our oars.”

“Now is the time to work to unite all feuding factions and with a common purpose, campaign to win the December 2024 elections,” said the elders.

Meanwhile the NPP Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim has also congratulated the new candidates, delegates, and participants in the just-ended parliamentary primaries.

He underscored the level of commitment and dedication exhibited by the delegates and aspirants which contributed to the peaceful elections.

Chairman Ntim further entreated the new candidates to take up the responsibility of representing the party with the utmost dedication and commitment to the principles that define the party.

“To those who did not emerge victorious, I sincerely appreciate your participation in the primaries. Your willingness to serve and your commitment to the NPP are invaluable. The democratic process thrives when individuals of integrity and passion step forward and I encourage you to remain engaged in the party’s activities,” the statement added.

Chairman Ntim also entreated the party machinery to engage in constructive dialogue, foster a culture of mutual respect, and prioritize the well-being of the electorate.

“Our party’s success lies in unity of purpose and a shared commitment to the welfare of our nation. The challenges ahead require us to stand shoulder to shoulder emphasizing the values that bind us as members of the New Patriotic Party”.

The statement continued, “As we embark on the journey towards December 2024, let us engage in constructive dialogue to foster a culture of mutual respect and prioritize the wellbeing of the people we aim to serve”.

Manchester United owes almost £1bn, new figures reveal

0

Manchester United owe £969.6m through a combination of gross debt, bank borrowings and outstanding transfer fees with associated payments, according to new figures.

The club released their second quarter results to 31 December on Thursday.

Unlike previous years, there was no investors’ call afterwards as a result of the ongoing “strategic review”.

This could lead to the sale of the Premier League club.

The review itself is centred on how to meet the club’s long-term capital investment needs, specifically for improvements to Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training ground, and – it is being stressed – is not due to any issues with short-term liquidity.

Nevertheless, the amount owed the club has grown.

While the principal debt remains at $650m, a change in the exchange rate meant the club owed £535.7m compared to £477.1m at the same point in the previous year.

In addition, £206.2m has been taken from a rolling credit facility, with another £227.7m owed in outstanding transfer fees. The club did have £31m in cash or equivalent, but the overall sum remains just short of £1bn.

BBC Sport has been told the figures are evidence of a “stretched” financial situation, although it is being stressed that this has already changed for the better, due to bumper matchday revenues and impressive season ticket sales – and they expect that to continue.

Indeed, in posting profits of £6.3m for the quarter, United have also revealed sponsorship revenue has increased 43.2% to £50.4m over the prior quarter. The club said this was due to the impact of their training kit agreement with Tezos, plus a ‘one-off sponsorship credit’, which they have opted not to detail.

Wages were down £20.4m to £77.3m, a decrease of 20.9% as Erik ten Hag’s team are not in this season’s Champions League.

How can you compare ‘poverty-stricken’ Ghana to Canada? – Blakk Rasta shreds Hawa Koomson –

0

Controversial media personality cum musician, Blakk Rasta has lambasted Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament who also serves as a Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, for comparing Ghana to Canada.

According to him, Hawa Koomson’s comparison of the high cost of rent in the country with that of a foreign nation like Canada is misguided. This is because the economic status of Canada is healthier than Ghana’s.

He slammed Hawa Koomson for being “nonchalant and insensitive” to the plights Ghanaians are grappling with.

Speaking on the UrbanBlend show on 3FM monitored by GhanaWeb, Blakk Rasta justified why Hawa Koomson’s claims that the cost of rent in Ghana is better than in other foreign countries is wrong.

“You compare a poverty-stricken country like Ghana to Canada? Go to America and find out how much KFC costs and come to Ghana and find out how much the same costs in every jurisdiction.

“They look at the income of the people. You must understand what it means to say per capita income. What amenities do you have in the area? When you go to Canada, every second, electricity is on. With a single phone call, the ambulance is there. Before you even call the police, the police will knock on your door. These are the immaculate services we have in the area,” he stated.

“So these are the people you have voted in as your MPs. Very nonchalant and at the same time very insensitive. I am sad. This is the level of low brains you have decided to go for as your representative in parliament and a minister,” he added.

What Hawa Koomson said about rent rates in Ghana

In a recent interview on Onua FM’s morning show ‘Yɛn Nsɛmpa’ with Nana Yaa Brefo and JB, the Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament urged Ghanaians to compare rent rates between Ghana and Canada.

She highlighted her recent visit to Canada, emphasizing that renting even a single room there could cost over 2,000 Canadian dollars per month, significantly more expensive than in Ghana.

“People have been complaining that rent is expensive in Ghana. They should go to Canada. For a month, you pay over 2,000 Canadian dollars. That’s for a single room, not even a chamber and hall.

“Things are hard now, and there is a high cost of living everywhere, and when you compare Ghana to other countries, Ghana is doing far better,” she said in Twi.

She argued that despite global economic challenges, Ghana remains comparatively affordable, attributing this to the government’s efforts.

Hawa Koomson’s comment has been met with vehement criticism with some people raining insults on her for being insensitive to the challenges bedeviling Ghanaians.

Assin North by-election: Race between NPP, NDC a dead heat

0

The Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwa says results of polls recently conducted by his organisation show that the race between the parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a dead heat.

He has therefore asked both parties not to celebrate yet but work harder as the results of the election could go either way today, Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

Mr Dankwa said this in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM in Accra on Monday.

“The outcome of the polls suggests that the race is too close to call meaning that it is statistically dead heat, meaning there is a tie. NPP’s candidate leads with 46.7 percent and NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson with 45.6 percent. That represents 1.1 percent margin between them. And mind you the margin of error is 1.9 percent so that margin of leading is within the polls’ margin of error, so it is dead heat according to pollsters,” he stated.

Mr. Dankwa said 6.9% of voters remained undecided, making their votes pivotal in determining the outcome of the election.

He said the survey involved 2,500 participants, providing valuable insights into the preferences of the electorates ahead of the by-election.

Both candidates are vying for the support of the undecided voters, knowing that their decision will shape the final results.

Meanwhile, the survey by Global Info Analytics also revealed that Charles Opoku has lost a 19% lead he enjoyed four weeks ago to a 1.1% lead.

On the issue of the court case, when voters who voted for Mr. Opoku were asked if they were influenced to vote for him because they feared Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s court case could be an issue, 20% of them said they intended to vote for Mr. Opoku because of Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s court case.

The poll also showed that 44% of NDC voters who intend to vote for Mr. Opoku were doing so because of Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s court case.

In the key battleground electoral areas of Endwa, Breku, Dominase, Bediadua, and Praso, undecided voters average over 10% of voters.

Ken Agyapong has shown he is a force to reckon with – Gyampo says as he congratulates Bawumia –

0

A Professor at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo has commended Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong for his good showing in the flagbearer contest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said Mr Agaypong’s campaign message to the delegates was well-articulated.

“He has done well, he didn’t disgrace himself, he has shown he is a force to reckon with. His campaign was a well-articulated message on common sense, exposing corruption,” Prof Gyampo said on TV3 while discussing the outcome of the primaries.

He also commended the NPP for the peaceful nature of the primaries.

“Generally I am commending them,” he stressed.

Prof Gyampo also congratulated Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for winning the contest based on the provisional results that have come in so far.

He however said the Vice President will have a huge task of defending the track record of the government as he tries to convince Ghanaians to vote for him in the 2024 general elections.

“How he is able to defend the track record and embarrassing situation of this government is an issue. Explaining that things are better today than when he became vice president is a huge task ahead of him. I congratulate him for winning. He has mastered the game of politicking, he knew how to talk to those who mattered, he knew how to reach out to those who others could not reach out to.”

Also commenting on the NPP polls, a former Deputy Minister of Information Felix Kwakye Ofosu commended Mr Agyapong for his performance.

Kwakye Ofosu has said that whichever way the internal elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) end, it is a disaster for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Kwakye Ofosu said Dr Bawumia simply doesn’t command the overwhelming level of support required in his party to get the wind in his sails for the 2024 elections.

In a tweet, the former Deputy Minister of Information said “Two definite predictions: JM wins in 2024.Ken Agyapong will be NPP flagbearer in 2028,all things being equal.

“Pitiful attempt to put a brave face on a weak showing by Bawumia and his supporters.Massive internal revolt against the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia tag team. He goes into 2024,a very weak candidate devoid of a solid mandate from his party.”

Provisional results have been declared in the Assin Central Constituency in New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries on Saturday, November 4.

Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who stood in Saturday’s elections, polled 491 out of the total valid votes cast. His closest contender Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had 16 votes.

The other two aspirants – Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh – had no votes. In Assin South Constituency, Mr Agyapong polled 478 votes while Dr Bawumia polled 158 votes. Dr Afriyie Akoto and Mr Addai-Nimoh had 1 and 0 respectively.

From the Bolgatanga East Constituency in the Upper East Region, out of a total of 251 votes cast, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 242 votes.

Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) Kennedy Ohene Agyapong polled 8 votes while Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former MP for Asante Mampong Constituency, had a single vote.

Former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Owusus Afriyie Akoto had no votes.

In Bunkpurugu in the North East Region, it is a clean sweep of votes for the Vice President as he polled 522 out of 522.

The rest had no votes and there were no rejected nor spoilt ballots.

At Yagaba Kubori in the same region, the Vice President polled 366 votes with three (3) spoilt ballots.

The other three aspirants had no votes.

At the Party’s headquarters in Accra, where government officials voted, Dr Bawumia polled 254 votes out of a total 393 valid votes while Mr Ohene Agyapong had 133 votes.

Mr Addai-Nimoh had 4 votes while Dr Afriyie Akoto had 4 votes.

Most of the centers are sorting ballots after polls closed at 2:00pm.

‘Messi, we’re waiting for you’

0

Two people on motorcycles shot at a supermarket belonging to the family of Antonela Roccuzzo, Lionel Messi’s wife, in Rosario, in Argentina’s Santa Fe province early on Thursday, local media and the city’s mayor reported.

A threatening handwritten message for 35-year-old Messi, Argentina’s captain and seven-time World Player of the Year, was also left on the shop door.

“Messi, we are waiting for you, (Pablo) Javkin (the mayor) is also a narco, he is not going to take care of you,” it read.

Javkin blamed the security forces for failing to effectively combat organised crime, which in recent years has grown in the important port city, where dozens of ships daily load thousands of tons of grain.

“I spoke (with the Roccuzzos) and they are worried,” Javkin told reporters outside the supermarket that was attacked.

Television images showed bullet casings on the pavement where the business belonging to Roccuzzo’s family is located. The front of the building was hit by 14 bullets, and the shop remained closed on Thursday.

Santa Fe’s security minister, Claudio Brilloni, told reporters that authorities did not have any firm assumptions regarding the motives for the attack. Prosecutor Federico Rébola said the Roccuzzo family had not received any previous threats, a Rosario media outlet reported.

The murder rate in Rosario is among the highest in Argentina, as gangs linked to drug trafficking coexist, according to judicial complaints, and clashes causing injuries and deaths are frequently reported.

The attack came weeks before Argentina play two friendly matches in the South American country, three months after Messi led the team to victory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Neither game will take place in Rosario. Argentina face Panama on March 23 in the capital Buenos Aires, and on March 28 they play in the province of Santiago del Estero against Curacao.

The matches will be the team’s first in Argentina since the World Cup. Coach Lionel Scaloni has not yet named his squad.

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson Set for A24 Erotic Thriller from ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ Director Halina Reijn –

0

Hot off the indie success of “Bodies,” Reijn will direct the film about a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern.

A24 is keeping in business with Halina Reijn.

Following the indie box office success of the Dutch actress-turned-feature-filmmaker’s 2022 word-of-mouth hit “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” A24 has another upcoming project with Reijn. “Babygirl,” the studio announced on November 21, will star Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson in an erotic thriller about a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern. Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde (breakout star of A24’s “Talk to Me”), and Jean Reno also join the cast, IndieWire has confirmed. “Babygirl” will mark Reijn’s second feature film, which she wrote as well.

David Hinojosa of 2AM will produce alongside Reijn of MAN UP Film and A24, who is financing the project. Julia Oh, Zach Nutman, and Christine D’Souza Gelb of 2AM will serve as executive producers on “Babygirl.”

Reijn’s satirical slasher “Bodies Bodies Bodies” is already headed for cult classic status since premiering at SXSW 2022, where A24 picked up the project for an August 2022 release. The film grossed $14 million globally and featured star-making turns from up-and-comers Amandla Stenberg, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, and Rachel Sennott. Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova also starred with Lee Pace.

A24’s fall release schedule includes writer/director Sean Durkin’s sports drama “The Iron Claw,” also starring Dickinson alongside Jeremy Allen White and Zac Efron as the Von Erich brothers who became wrestling sensations in the 1980s before succumbing to tragedy amid what they came to know as a family “curse.” Dickinson is also on TV right now in FX’s hacker thriller “A Murder at the End of the World,” from “The OA” creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij. Dickinson also starred in 2023 Best Picture nominee “Triangle of Sadness.”

Kidman, meanwhile, will be honored with the American Film Institute’s AFI Life Achievement Award in April 2024. She also stars in Prime Video’s “The Expats” limited series from “The Farewell” director Lulu Wang. Upcoming, she also has Baz Luhrmann’s “Faraway Downs,” the fellow Aussie director’s recut of his 2008 “Australia,” coming to Hulu.

Neither Kennedy Agyapong nor Bawumia can beat John Mahama – Arthur K –

0

One-time flagbearer hopeful of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Arthur Kwabena Kennedy has stated that none of the two leading candidates in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries will be a match for former President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 presidential elections.

According to him, both candidates have no message to ride on considering the record of the current government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“What are they going to run on? I mean to the extent that the government have failed… Apart from Nana Addo himself, Dr Bawumia regardless of who he is, is going to take the brunt of the blame.

“And if by some miracle Kennedy Agyapong were to be beat him, people will remind everybody that he has been a Member of Parliament and has benefited from a lot of the contracts awarded by the government that has made the public unhappy,” he stated in interview with Citinews.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 presidential election has elected former President John Dramani Mahama as the party’s flagbearer.

The NPP on the other hand is scheduled to elect a candidate in a November 4, 2023, primaries which has Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Owusu Afriyie-Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh in the race for the flagbearership position.

GWCL restores water supply to eastern Accra, Tema –

0

Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has started treatment and pumping of water from the Kpong Treatment Plant to the Tema Booster Station after repair works were completed on some weaker portions of the transmission pipeline.

The supply of treated water started in the late hours of Thursday, January 11, 2024.

The Kpong Treatment Plant was shut down last Wednesday for the two-day repair works on the 42-inch and 21-inch transmission pipeline, affecting the supply of water to the eastern part of Accra and Tema to about two million people.

A similar shutdown and repair works of the Kpong Treatment Plant was done in September last year, interrupting water supply.

Repair works

The Chief Manager in Charge of Public Relations and Communications of the GWCL, Stanley Martey, told the Daily Graphic that water supply was yet to improve since the transmission pipelines had dried up over the period.

“We are hoping that the system should be able to stabilise today,” he said during yesterday’s interview.

He urged customers who were still experiencing intermittent flow of water to report to the company’s district offices or use the GWL customer app for complaints.

Other works

Mr Martey said the shutdown of the treatment plant afforded the company the opportunity to work on three other areas.

Those, he said, involved removing aquatic weeds which were sometimes stuck in the transmission pipelines, undertaking maintenance works on the treatment plant, and replacing some valves at the Dodowa Booster Station.

He mentioned that aquatic weeds were growing at a fast rate due to increased aquaculture on the Volta Lake, which had enriched the soil.

“The spillage of the Akosombo Dam washed most of the weeds to where the company extracts water from.

“As a result, we were not able to get enough water for treatment, and that is why in the last few days there was not much water in the system,” he said.

Mr Martey said it became crucial to shut down on January 10 and 11 to enable divers to manually remove the weeds from the pipeline.

Dry season

In view of the dry season, the Communications Manager pointed out that the company faced challenges with extraction of water since some river bodies had dried up.

He said high temperatures also had an impact on the pipelines, resulting in more bursts which caused them to shut down.

“What this means is that people, particularly those living farther away from the source will find it difficult to get water,” he explained.

He, therefore, urged people to use water judiciously, store water, and stop using waterhoses for their lawns, cars and gardens.

He appealed to the public to pay their bills at their district offices and also use their GWL Customer App for easy payment of bills.

Meanwhile, Mr Martey cited the construction of some water supply projects in Keta, Sekondi-Takoradi, Wenchi, Sunyani, Damongo, Yendi and Tamale to improve the water situation and help the country to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal Six of the United Nations by 2030.

Background

In April 2021, the GWCL announced that the main 42-inch transmission pipeline was weak and broke down frequently, leading to loss of water and revenue.

The company stated that it was financing the works from its own resources, including engineers and expertise, adding that the pipelines were moulded and crafted at the GWCL workshop in Tema.

Japa Syndrome: Future Of Our Youths Not In Europe But In Nigeria – Adesina

0

The President of African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, said that the future of the Nigerian youths does not lie in any country but in their country.

Adesina made this known when he bagged the prestigious 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership in Lagos, on Wednesday.

The AfDB President disclosed that nations grow economically by keeping their best human capital at home and getting additional resource skills elsewhere.

He lamented the migration phenomenon known as Japa which has been popularised by Nigerian youths leaving the country in searching for greener pastures in Europe, the Americas, Asia and other parts of the world.

Adesina said: “I refuse to believe that the future of Nigeria’s and Africa’s youths lie in Europe, North America, Asia, or anywhere else. I believe that their future must lie in Africa, growing well, robustly, able to create quality jobs and decent earnings for our young people.

“There is absolutely no reason in the world how we have a demographic asset that then becomes a global negative externality. Let’s take pride in ourselves and let’s make our demographic asset our economic asset globally. I firmly believe that their future lies right here in Nigeria.”

“While one might argue that our growing diaspora is good as they send back billions of dollars, higher than the oil revenue that we have, this is not the way to develop sustainably.

“Nations that develop do all they can to keep their best human capital at home and additional resource skills elsewhere, with flexible immigration and labour policies.

“I always say to myself, how can we have 477 million people under the age of 35 and there are no financial institution? That means we have missing institution and market failure problems and that is why the African Development Bank decided that we will create what we call Youths Entrepreneurship Investment Bank.”

It was February 2019 and the weather was balmy, bathing Goa’s famous beaches in a warm glow. The sea glistened, invitingly.

In between yoga practice, Gupta always made time for a swim.

On this particular day, she floated out further than she usually would. When she realized how strong the current was, it was too late. The water had started to pull her under.

She tried not to panic.

“I knew somewhere that, ‘Okay, if I constantly, and with consistency, keep swimming, I might make it,’” she tells CNN Travel today.

Whenever Gupta attempted to crawl back to shore, the current dragged her under and she’d fight her way back to the surface, gasping for air.

“Then I saw this man coming towards me.”

This was Attila Bosnyak, a financial adviser in his forties hailing from Hungary but based in the Netherlands.

Coincidentally, Bosnyak was a student at Gupta’s yoga retreat where, he says, he’d been trying to “disconnect from the hustle and work pressure and the Dutch winter.”

Gupta didn’t teach Bosnyak’s beginners group, so they’d never spoken directly.

Bosnyak was a strong swimmer, so he wasn’t scared, but he was struggling to reach Gupta in the face of the strong current.

“He came very close to me, to hold my hand and pull me out, but just about that time I was pulled in by the ocean,” says Gupta.

That’s when Bosnyak realized that, even if he could get hold of Gupta’s hand, he wasn’t strong enough to pull her back to the shore alone.

Glancing around, trying to stay calm, he spotted a nearby cluster of rocks that were blocking Gupta and Bosnyak from the view of anyone on shore.

Bosnyak figured if he could climb on top of one of them, he could wave back to land and catch a lifeguard’s attention, but there was a risk of being thrown onto a rock and injuring himself.

“So I tried to do it carefully,” Bosnyak recalls. “But I couldn’t really, so two, three, four times I was basically pushed onto the rock by the wave.”

From Gupta’s perspective, it looked like her potential savior was drifting uncontrollably.

“That’s when I panicked,” she says, recalling thinking: “What if the wave just throws me on the rock and I have a head injury or something?”

Eventually Bosnyak managed to clamber on top, and pull himself to his feet. Waving and shouting, he caught the attention of the lifeguard on the beach, who swam out immediately.

The lifeguard assisted Gupta back to the beach, while Bosnyak swam on ahead.

It was only when Bosynak reached the shore that he realized he was bleeding.

“Especially my back and my thighs because of the scratches, and my fingers – because I’d tried to hold on to the rock,” he recalls.

“My heart sank when I saw that, because it just made me realize that what this man just did to help someone, to help me,” says Gupta.

As Bosynak, exhausted, collapsed onto a sun bed, Gupta jogged to the nearest store to get some disinfectant and, on a whim, chocolate ice cream.

Back on the beach, Gupta started tending to Bosnyak’s wounds. Then she handed him the ice cream and he smiled gratefully.

“Something changed, for me, in that moment,” she recalls. “There was a click in my heart somewhere.”

Bosnyak felt it too, even as he lay there, bleeding.

“I think that was a magic moment,” he says.

Fate intervenes

After it was established that they were both okay, besides the scratches and the shock, Bosnyak and Gupta made their way back to the yoga center together, talking as they walked.

Back at the resort, shattered, they returned to their respective rooms to rest, but reconnected later that day at dinner.

There, they introduced themselves to one another properly. At first, the conversation lingered on their unexpected life or death experience.

They talked about where they were both from, what had brought them to Goa, and quickly realized how well they got on, chatting into the the evening, then picking up again the next day.

The yoga retreat was due to end the day after, with Bosnyak planning to fly back to the Netherlands and Gupta catching the train back to Kerala, where she lived.

But Gupta was starting to wish they had a bit more time to get to know one another.

Could they postpone their journeys home and spend some more time together in Goa, she wondered?

“But to say it out loud or ask it out loud was also a bit… you have inhibitions,” she says now.

Luckily, Bosnyak was on the same page. They both agreed to postpone their returns by a week and instead they spent Valentine’s Day 2019 together, taking long walks on Goa’s beaches, kayaking and exploring the region’s Portuguese churches.

The two extended their time in Goa beyond the retreat so they could enjoy exploring together and get to know each other better.

And as their extra week together came to an end, they celebrated Gupta’s birthday.

“That morning, I remember we had this breakfast together and Attila drove me to the station before he left,” she recalls.

Both of them were excited about what had happened.

“It was a good feeling – that you found somebody with a connection and he would just leave that big smile on your face, and that tingling feeling, that butterflies,” says Gupta.

The two promised to stay in touch.

“That started really a beautiful couple of months, chatting, WhatsApping, video calling more and more,” says Bosnyak.

Despite being separated by oceans, they soon knew each other’s daily routines by heart, and spoke every day.

A leap of faith

About a month after they left Goa, Bosnyak called Gupta.

“We should take this connection forward,” he said.

“My heart was pounding and I immediately agreed without any second thoughts, despite knowing that it’s a huge distance, different cultures, continents, countries, cities,” says Gupta.

They decided to officially embark on a long-distance relationship.

“I wanted to do this. I mean, I wanted to have this experience. I loved his vibe for that time when I was around him and I was very happy,” recalls Gupta.

Looking for a destination roughly halfway between India and the Netherlands to meet up for a vacation, they’d begun to seriously consider Dubai when outside influences took hold.

Gupta’s mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was scheduled for emergency surgery.

“I knew I had to be there,” Gupta recalls now. She left Kerala and flew to her family home in Lucknow, in the north of India, to support her family.

“My days were [spent] discussing her health and finding the right hospital, the right doctor along with my family, and I saw my mom very low and unhealthy,” Gupta recalls.

Flying to Dubai – or indeed even leaving Lucknow – was off the table.

My heart was pounding and I immediately agreed without any second thoughts, despite knowing that it’s a huge distance, different cultures, continents, countries, cities.

A tearful Gupta phoned Bosnyak one evening and explained that she wouldn’t be able to meet him anywhere for the next few months.

Bosnyak helped comfort her from afar, and as they were talking, an idea started to percolate.

“What about if I traveled out there, to be with you?” he suggested.

Gupta couldn’t believe this man she’d met just once would be willing to do that for her, but she felt instant relief at the thought of Bosnyak being by her side.

She suggested he come after her mother’s operation.

The procedure was successful, and after some recovery time in hospital, Gupta’s mother was back home.

Not long afterward, Bosnyak arrived in Delhi Airport, Gupta was there to meet him at Arrivals.

En route to Lucknow, the couple stopped off at Agra to visit the Taj Mahal.

Gazing at the spectacular marble building, they shared a significant moment. Bosnyak got down on one knee and proposed.

It wasn’t a marriage proposal but a promise to love one another, and to commit to making their relationship work.

Gupta’s family couldn’t wait to meet the man who’d saved her life and swept her off her feet.

“I’ve never seen them this excited to meet a boy,” says Gupta, laughing.

Bosnyak fit right in right away.

“Everything was so organic,” says Gupta.

It was the perfect trip, the grand romantic gesture at the Taj Mahal complemented by quieter moments of Bosnyak supporting Gupta and bonding with her family.

Everything felt so natural that the idea of Bosnyak leaving, and the two being separated again, was hard to stomach.

A Dutch reunion

The couple decided that once Gupta’s mother was fully recovered, Gupta would apply for a visa that would allow her to spend a month with Bosynak in the Netherlands.

But with legal complications meaning a likely six month delay, the pair decided to meet wherever they could – Dubai in the height of the summer and then Serbia.

“Not a usual romantic destination, I guess,” says Bosnyak, who explains they picked their locations based on Indian visa requirements.

“But we really enjoyed our stay there. We were swimming in the Danube and Sava rivers and really exploring that city. We rented an Airbnb, so we lived like a couple.”

It was a taste of a future life together they hoped was on the cards.

Their final meet up was in Thailand. Not long after, in September 2019, Gupta received her Dutch visa and flew to the Netherlands a month later, moving into the apartment where Bosnyak lived in in The Hague.

It was an idyllic few months. The couple traveled to Hungary together to visit Bosnyak’s family, and they spent happy weekends exploring the Netherlands.

While they were both thrilled to finally be together, for Gupta, it was also a huge move that required acclimatizing to a different country and culture as well as finding a job.

“It was a 360-degree shift for me,” she says.

The cold Dutch winter was an adjustment. It was also strange, Gupta says, being an Indian woman in Bosnyak’s very white, Dutch neighborhood.

But before long she had befriended many of Bosnyak’s friends and colleagues, and also connected with other Indian expats.

And she kept in close contact with friends and family back home via video calls.

As Bosnyak and Gupta spent more time together, their relationship deepened, and the idea of marriage, which had always been in the air, became the obvious next step.

For Gupta, the idea had been in the back of her mind since Bosnyak saved her life in Goa.

But it was when he visited Lucknow in the aftermath of her mother’s surgery, that Gupta felt sure she wanted to spend the rest of her life with this man.

“I was secretly dreaming about marrying him already by then, I think,” she says.

“It was really natural,” says Bosnyak.

The couple say their friends – more used to dealing with the ups and downs of dating apps than saving a future partner from drowning – were blown away by the romance of Bosnyak and Gupta’s story.

Still, some were skeptical about whether the relationship would work in the humdrum reality of everyday. Others wondered if cultural differences might sever the connection.

“But you know, as time goes by, and we are still together – not just together but we love each other – they get an answer to those logical doubts,” says Bosnyak.

The couple hoped to bring together their friends and family from across the globe for a big wedding celebration.

But these plans were put on hold as other events took over.

A year in lockdown

Bosnyak and Gupta were married on March 21, 2020 in a modest ceremony with only a couple of witnesses at Trouwlocatie Groenmarkt, the former city hall of The Hague.

The Covid-19 pandemic had started to take hold in the Netherlands, and they were the last couple to get married at the venue before lockdown.

Bosnyak and Gupta went from counting down the days until they could reunite in a new destination to spending every day together in a small apartment.

“In a new relationship it’s a lot, and that also taught us a lot,” says Gupta, who says their one-year of marriage feels like far longer.

“It’s the acid test, I think, for a relationship,” agrees Bosnyak. “That you can live with that person for months and months and months with no events around, no places to visit, no fun activities apart from the ones you can invent inside your apartment – or during your short walks in the next one and a half, two kilometers in your neighborhood. So if you can make it, and keep on your happiness, then that relationship is rock solid.”

There were difficult moments along the way, but the couple were happy to be together, to be able to be there for one another and provide emotional support.

They also navigated their cultural differences along the way.

“We are both quite patient with other cultures and other thoughts and, other personalities, patient and empathic,” says Bosnyak.

“It was so fascinating to know someone so closely from a different country or culture,” says Gupta.

The two cooked for one another, introducing each other to their home cuisines and meeting halfway when their tastes diverged.

While they inevitably had disagreements, they tried to stay patient and pragmatic, and put themselves in the other person’s shoes.

Gupta, a dog lover, also successfully persuaded Bosnyak that they should get a puppy. Their dog Sukhi Ram joined the household in May 2020.

Gupta struggled to find work during the pandemic. She’d registered her own yoga company in the Netherlands, but had to pivot to teaching yoga online, mostly to friends back home.

When the EU eased Covid travel restrictions in summer 2020, Bosnyak and Gupta seized the opportunity to travel to Greece.

The three-week trip was a delayed honeymoon of sorts. The couple explored beautiful destinations including Santorini and Mykonos, where they were among some of the only tourists.

“We walked empty Santorini streets, watching sunsets and we also woke up at 6:30 in the morning to watch the sun coming up,” says Bosynak.

They also made it to Hungary to see Bosnyak’s family in August 2020, and enjoyed exploring the Netherlands’ castles and lakes together.

Holding onto hope

By the fall, Europe was experiencing another wave of Covid-19 and the long lockdown days returned.

The couple spent much of the winter months inside, caring for Sukhi Ram and looking after each other.

About a month ago, as spring started to bloom and the pandemic seemed to be subsiding in the Netherlands and in India, Gupta made the decision to travel back to her home country to see family and friends, including her newly born nephew.

Unfortunately Gupta’s arrival coincided with a spike in Covid cases in India, which has turned into a devastating second wave for the country.

Gupta caught the virus, and is currently recovering, with Bosnyak supporting her from afar.

“Right now, the situation is so overwhelming here,” says Gupta. “I see people struggling and I just hope that something gets better.”

Gupta and Bosnyak are currently focused on supporting family and friends who’ve been impacted by the disaster in India, and trying to find pockets of joy via planning for the future, and reflecting on the past.

They’re hoping to move to Athens, Greece next summer, as Bosynak has a job offer there, so they’re excited for this new adventure. They’re also considering starting a family.

And reflecting on how they met, and the series of coincidences that brought them together, never fails to put a smile on their faces.

“It really seems like a heaven sent relationship,” says Boysnak.

There are so many ingredients that led to where they are today, he explains. It’s not just the fact that they were both in Goa at the same time, or on the same retreat, or even that they were bonded by what happened in the sea. It was deeper than that.

“Because we could be completely different people, having some memories of that accident, but spending our lives in different places and different cultures, and continuing as we were before,” he says.

As for Gupta, she finds it funny that she’d often cancel dates with guys who lived only a few miles away, but ended up meeting and marrying someone from a different continent.

“There was so much positivity, and everything fell into place so organically,” she says. “There was so much trust and love at every turn, and I think that’s why we are together today.”

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has averred that, for the reforms he made since assumption of office on May 29, he deserves to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

According to Tinubu, during his time as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, he moved the state from zero to becoming the fifth largest economy on the continent, adding that his track record prepared him for the presidency.

Addressing a group of investors at the 10th German-Nigerian Business Forum on Tuesday, in Berlin, Germany, the President said he has dealt with “every hurdle and obstacle” in the way of those willing to invest in Nigeria.

His words: “For those who fear various obstacles, look at me; I come from the private sector, and I’m one of you, trained by Deloitte. I served as the treasurer of Exxon Mobil. Define corporate governance in any way, and I am in it.

“I governed Lagos for eight consecutive years. Today, I can proudly beat my chest that Lagos State is on the horizon and the fifth-largest economy in Africa, rising from zero. This is the track record that led me to the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“Nigeria voted for me for reforms, and from day one of my inauguration, I started the reforms. To me, if you didn’t mention me in the Guinness Book of Records, I’d thrive to find a way to insert myself because I did it without expectation, my inaugural speech disclosed what I would do,” Tinubu added.

Gachagua Or Mudavadi, Who Is Senior? Ruto Clarifies

0

Immediately after Musalia Mudavadi ditched Raila Odinga for William Ruto, questions began to arise about who was Ruto going to pick as his running mate. In favor of the Mt.Kenya people and wooing them for their votes, Ruto picked Rigathi Gachagua, and the duo won the elections.

Since then, there have been supremacy wars over who was senior between Deputy President Rigathi Gacvhagua and Musalia Mudavadi who was given the position of Prime Cabinet Secretary, their roles almost being the same, These leaders even disagreed on who was going to stay at the Harambee House office, with Gachagua winning the fight and Mudavadi settling for an office in Kenya Railways.

Well, barely hours after the CSs retreat, President William Ruto has finally clarified the roles of both Gachagua and Mudavadi, clearly showing who is more senior to the other.

Today, President William Ruto released an executive order, detailing the structure of his government. In his executive order number 1, Ruto clearly stated that Gachagua is the most senior to Musalia, retaining him to deputize the President in the execution of the President’s functions in accordance with Article 147 of the Constitution. Although Mudavadi’s position has also been placed directly under the president’s Office, Mudavadi is under both Ruto and Gachagua.

Musalia Mudavadi will be assisting the president and his deputy with their duties.

Stonebwoy delivers world-class performance at closing ceremony

0

One of Africa’s most decorated dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy, was the headline performer at the 2023 Africa Games closing ceremony put together by the African Union.

The internationally acclaimed artiste left the crowd yearning for more after putting on a spectacular 10-song set performance at the fully-packed 20,000-capacity University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra to close out this year’s continental multi-sport event held in Ghana.

Running through songs such as “Manodzi,” “Kpokeke,” “Higher,” “Activate,” “Therapy,” “Overlord,” “Bawasaba,” “Apotheke,” and “Into the Future,” he brought his vibrant vibes and signature sound of afrobeat, reggae, and dancehall to the stadium, creating an unforgettable spectacle that thrilled fans at the stadium and those who watched from home.

A household name across the African region and credited as the creator and driving force behind Afrodancehall’s ascent to global prominence, the multi-award-winning singer, songwriter, and performer has become a global phenomenon, entertaining colossal audiences in Africa, the United States, Europe, and beyond.

While he has published massive global hits with “Into the Future,”  “Activate,” and “Shuga,”  as well as scoring success on bigger stages, his career took a major step up by playing to this substantial audience at the 2023 African Games closing ceremony.

Elsewhere, Stonebwoy was crowned the “Best African Dancehall Entertainer” at the recently concluded 41st International Reggae & World Awards 2024 held in Jamaica, just before his performance at the Africa Games closing ceremony.

This accolade adds to his impressive collection of previous IRAWMA wins, including “Most Promising Artiste” in 2016 and “Best African Dancehall Entertainer” in 2020.

Hammers should target depleted defence –

0

West Ham were thumped 5-1 at Liverpool in Wednesday’s EFL Cup quarter-final but a league win over former club Manchester United would put a smile back on David Moyes’ face.

The Hammers have won four of their last six league matches, also progressing to the last 16 of the Europa League, and they kick off the weekend just one point behind United.

The Red Devils held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield last weekend but Erik ten Hag and his players are still feeling the heat after finishing bottom of their Champions League group.

Team news

West Ham are missing injured striker Michail Antonio while Nayef Aguerd and Maxwel Cornet are doubts.

Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot is suspended after his red card against Liverpool but skipper Bruno Fernandes returns from a ban. Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen and Anthony Martial will be assessed but Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount and Amad Diallo remain sidelined.

The stats

Both teams have scored in all seven of West Ham’s matches against top-half teams this season.

The Hammers have conceded at least once in six of their eight league victories in 2023-24.

13 of West Ham’s last 16 league matches featured over 2.5 goals.

Manchester United have picked up one point from six matches against other top-nine clubs this term.

The Red Devils have scored only 18 goals in 17 Premier League matches.

United have been leading at half-time in only two of their 17 league games.

Prediction

Manchester United have lost seven of their first 17 Premier League matches this season and another defeat is looming when the Red Devils travel to the London Stadium.

They were grateful for some uncharacteristically sloppy finishing from Liverpool, who had 34 shots in last weekend’s stalemate and then took out their frustration on the Hammers in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

However, West Ham are going well in the league, beating Nottingham Forest, Burnley, Tottenham and Wolves within their last six fixtures, and they could prove too sharp for a depleted United defence.

Before the draw at Anfield, ten Hag’s men were thrashed 3-0 at home by Bournemouth and they conceded 15 goals in six Champions League group matches against Bayern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

West Ham, with forwards Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus in sparkling form, should cause serious problems for United although the home defence generally offers up the odd gift to opponents so backing the Hammers to win and both teams to score looks a sound bet.

FDA Outdoors National Tobacco Control Strategy |

0

The Ministry of Health has launched its National Tobacco Control Strategy (NTCS), marking a significant step towards creating a healthier, tobacco-free nation under the Food and Drugs Authority.

The NTCS is a comprehensive strategy that would serve as a pivotal document, aligning the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851), the Tobacco Control Regulations 2016 (L.I 2247), and other relevant laws, showcasing Ghana’s commitment to global tobacco control efforts.

The Strategy outlines a systematic approach to accelerate tobacco control in Ghana, with a primary focus on protecting the present and future generations from the severe health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco use and exposure.

By prioritizing youth and low-income communities, the strategy aims to enhance community engagement and policy implementation on tobacco control.

At its core, the NTCS serves as a guide for effective collaboration among agencies involved in tobacco control.
It sets clear goals and adopts strategic timelines, providing a structured framework for implementing impactful measures.

The launch of the NTCS is an important occasion, symbolizing the nation’s dedication to combating the detrimental effects of tobacco on both public health and the economy.

This extensive collaboration and commitment from various institutions, experts, and civil society members is a testament to the collective efforts invested in its creation and ensures that the strategy is robust, well-informed, and capable of addressing the dynamic challenges posed by tobacco use.

Training

The Food and Drugs Authority also held a 2-day training on the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products.

The training serves as a proactive measure to regulate the illegal trade of tobacco products, especially considering Ghana’s participation in the Illicit Trade Protocol, and does not only include strategies to counter illicit trade but also establishes a framework to enhance law enforcement and provides the legal foundation for international collaboration.

Dr Olivia Agyekumwaa Boateng, Director, of the Tobacco and Substances of Abuse Directorate, speaking at the event said “The tobacco menace continues to pose a significant challenge globally.”

She was however quick to add that “the issue is further worsened by the illicit trade in tobacco products, which not only makes tobacco more accessible at cheaper prices but also undermines the progress we have made so far as a country through tobacco control policies.”

Establish voter transfer centres on university campuses

0

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to set up voter transfer centres on various University campuses.

This request is aimed at accommodating its members who are registered voters but will be unable to cast their votes in their designated constituencies due to their academic commitments to transfer their votes.

NUGS, the official voice for all Ghanaian students, represents over 12.5 million students from basic to postgraduate level, both locally and internationally.

It is composed of six blocks. The organization’s main objective is to champion the welfare and interests of Ghanaian students. It collaborates actively with relevant stakeholders to advocate for quality and accessible education for all, irrespective of ethnic, social, or religious backgrounds.

On Wednesday, June 5, NUGS in a statement explained that the request was necessitated by the fact that a significant number of its members are currently pursuing their studies in various institutions across the country, far from their hometowns.

The statement highlighted that many students are currently engaged in mid-semester exams, while final-year students are heavily involved in conducting research for their final project works. The financial strain of commuting between their former voting locations and current campuses, especially considering the country’s economic situation, was also cited as a major concern.

NUGS emphasised the importance of ensuring that these students exercise their constitutional right to vote as stipulated in the 1992 constitution of Ghana; Article 42. It states that “Every citizen of Ghana of eighteen years or above who is of sound mind has the right to vote.”

“A person shall be registered as a voter if they are a citizen of Ghana and are of eighteen years or above” according to Article 43 of the 1992 constitution.

“We kindly request that the Electoral Commission takes the necessary steps to enable the limited transfer of votes for our members, in accordance with the following constitutional requirements: Article 45 which states that “A voter shall vote at the polling station where they are registered” and Article 46 which states that “The Electoral Commission shall make regulations for the transfer of votes.”

“We believe that this will ensure that our members are not disenfranchised and can fully participate in the democratic process come December 2024.”

Songs from Stonebwoy, Mr Eazi etc to be pulled from Tiktok over fair compensation –

0

Users and content creators of TikTok who also happen to be fans of Stonebwoy and some other African and international may face a hard time as some songs by their favourite artistes may be pulled from the app.

TikTok, the popular video-sharing app, is at risk of losing millions of songs from its platform after failing to reach a new deal with Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s largest music company.

UMG, which represents artists such as Mr Eazi, Stonebwoy, Yemi Alade, Nasty C, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and Drake, accused TikTok of trying to pay a fraction of the fair value for its music and of bullying and intimidating it during negotiations.

UMG said it would stop licensing its music to TikTok when its current contract expires on January 31, meaning that TikTok users would no longer be able to use songs from UMG’s vast catalogue to create and share videos.

UMG also expressed its concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence and online safety on its artists and songwriters.

TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance and has more than one billion users worldwide, responded by saying that UMG was putting its own greed above the interests of its talent.

It said that it was sad and disappointing that UMG had chosen to walk away from a platform that serves as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for them.

UMG is the dominant player in the global music industry, with a market share of about 33% and a roster of stars that includes the Beatles, Elton John, Coldplay, Adele, BTS, and Blackpink.

In contrast, Warner Music Group, the world’s third-largest music company, signed a new licensing deal with TikTok in July last year, allowing its artists and songwriters to benefit from the exposure and revenue generated by the app.

AfDB Projects 3.3 % Growth Rate For Ghana

0

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President Of The African Development Bank

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is projecting a 3.3 per cent growth of the country’s economy in 2023.

This is above the government’s forecast of 2.8 per cent, the World Bank’s 2.7 per cent and the International Monetary Fund’s 2.8 per cent.

This was contained in the AfDB’s 2023 Macroeconomic Performance and Outlook Report.

It said the country’s expected Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate was among 25 out of the 52 African economies that would record weak GDP in 2023.

It further indicated that Libya would become the fastest-growing economy in Africa with a growth rate of 12.9 per cent while Equatorial Guinea would have the weakest growing economy with -7.3 per cent of GDP.

The report further said despite significant headwinds, Africa’s real GDP growth was projected to stabilise at 4 per cent in 2023–24, 0.2 percentage points higher than the 3.8 per cent recorded in 2022.

The AfDB, however, warned that Africa’s stable growth outlook was, however, threatened by several challenges, as the continent continued to deal with a confluence of overlapping shocks, which include inter alia, ripple effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that continue to disrupt Africa’s and global supply chains, tightening of global financial conditions and the associated increase in domestic debt service costs; and lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, among others.

“Despite the confluence of multiple shocks, growth across all five African regions was positive in 2022 and the outlook for 2023–24 is projected to be stable,” the report said.

In West Africa, the report indicated that growth was estimated to have slowed to 3.6 per cent in 2022 from 4.4 per cent in 2021, reflecting decelerations in Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria.

For resource-intensive economies, the report stressed that average growth for this group could inch higher, to 3.0 per cent in 2023, as market conditions improve.

LI to restrict imports uncalled for

0

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) believes the government’s move to restrict the importation of some 22 selected goods into the country is uncalled-for.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, is seeking to lay before Parliament a Legislative Instrument to limit the importation of products such as rice, poultry, sugar, tripe, among others, in a bid to enhance local production.

However, the regulation has faced opposition from the Minority Caucus in Parliament and various stakeholders in the trade industry due to the permit required for the importation of the items.

Appearing before the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, the President of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng, reiterated the need for the country to attain self-sufficiency in food production before the rollout of the policy.

“We have to move slowly while we are trying to achieve self-sufficiency and do the right things. What is the threshold that qualifies a product to be restricted? Are we talking about 60 percent or 40 percent of production? We have not been given all this information and that is why we have called that instead of putting any impediment on trading, they should ban whatever they want to ban, and we will know that the product is banned but putting restrictions on us because we just want to import to meet demand is uncalled-for.”

Real Near Mbappé Capture –

Kylian Mbappé

Real Madrid are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé over signing on a free transfer this summer and are optimistic about concluding a deal soon, sources told ESPN.

ESPN reported Thursday that Mbappé has informed PSG that he would be leaving as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this season, after deciding that his future lies in Madrid.

Madrid submitted a formal contract offer to the France international last month, while PSG were still hopeful of convincing their star player to stay.

Sources told ESPN that Madrid were now hopeful of finalising an agreement in the near future, but a contract is yet to be signed, with some details still needing to be ironed out.

Mbappé started PSG’s 2-0 win at Nantes in Ligue 1 on Saturday on the bench, before coming on to score a 78th-minute penalty. He also scored in the French club’s 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in last week’s Champions League round-of-16 first leg.

The forward has scored a total of 32 goals in all competitions this season, despite the constant speculation about his future.

Mbappé has long been Madrid’s top transfer target, and after being on the brink of signing him in 2022 — before a change of heart saw Mbappé sign a contract extension at PSG — the LaLiga giants are now closer than ever to landing the World Cup winner.

Madrid are top of LaLiga on 62 points, six ahead of nearest rivals Girona, who beat RB Leipzig 1-0 away in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg last week.

Their top scorer in the league this season has been midfielder Jude Bellingham, with 16 goals, followed by Joselu and Rodrygo with eight, and Vinicius with seven.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, an aspiring presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the Presidential Election Committee to ensure transparency and fairness in the NPP presidential primary scheduled for November 4, 2023.

Speaking in an interview at his office in Ridge, Accra, he emphasized the importance of conducting a fair and transparent election to safeguard the unity of the party as it heads into the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Akoto expressed concern that any perception of favoritism or lack of a level-playing field in the upcoming primary could pose challenges to uniting the party against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the general elections.

He urged the committee to be forward-looking and prioritize the party’s unity as they conduct the primaries.

With only a few days remaining before the November 4 poll, the former Minister of Food and Agriculture has intensified his strategic campaign efforts, engaging with grassroots delegates of the party.

He has been meeting with Electoral Area Coordinators and selected Polling Station Executives who are part of his campaign team.

Dr. Akoto’s campaign has taken him through various regions of Ghana, including Greater Accra, Eastern, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo, where he has been presenting his vision for sustainable party-owned businesses aimed at creating jobs and offering incentives to the party’s activists.

He stressed that the party’s victory in the 2024 elections depends on the hard work and dedication of these activists.

Dr. Akoto, a Cambridge University Scholar, has been resonating with delegates, emphasizing that they deserve a leader who understands their challenges and can provide effective solutions.

He called on delegates to give him the opportunity to demonstrate his leadership qualities.

He expressed sadness over the current state of the party and received applause from delegates in the Bono Region.

The NPP’s National Delegates Conference on November 4, 2023, will see over 210,000 delegates cast their votes to select the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Akoto is listed as number 3 on the ballot paper, having placed 4th in the Super Delegates Conference held on August 26, 2023.

The NPP anticipates a highly contested and crucial decision during the upcoming primaries.

The courts shouldn’t impede Parliament’s work – Bright Simons

0

Vice President of IMANI Ghana, Bright Simons

Vice President of the think-tank Imani Centre for Policy and Education, Bright Simons, has stated that the courts must not stand in the way of Parliament’s proceedings in its quest to carry out investigations levelled against Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu.

Mr Simon’s assertion was in direct reaction to the news that Rev Kusi Boateng, Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral Secretariat, had secured an interim injunction against the Member of Parliament (MP), restraining him from making any further revelations about him.

“A Ghanaian court has granted a 10-day ‘interim order’ against a Member of Parliament investigating a matter of conflict of interest against a powerful clergyman who served as secretary to the ‘National Cathedral’. Courts should not impede Parliament’s public accountability work!” Mr Simons said in a tweet on social media.

Mr Ablakwa had been on a relentless campaign against the preacher, detailing scandalous information about him and accusing him of conflict of interest, fraud, double identity, self-dealing and corruption. He made documents available to back his claims. But on February 1, 2023, Rev Kusi Boateng, got the High Court to restrain the MP from any further disclosures for the next 10 days.

Mr Simons added that the court should not become an impediment to the work of Parliament.

“Ghanaians, esp the middle classes, frequently complain that Parliament is weak. Parliament is made up of human beings. Only bold & courageous MPs will make Parliament strong. The courts should, thus, not emasculate MPs when they are on the trail of matters of real public interest!” He complained.

GNAT Raises Doubt About Bawumia’s ‘One Student, One Laptop’ Promise | Social

0

President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Reverend Isaac Owusu, has expressed skepticism about the ‘one student, one laptop’ policy.

According to him, government’s failure in implementing the ‘One teacher, One laptop’ policy has created doubts about future laptop-related policies.

“The commitment of the government to honour it’s decision of making the provisions of the laptop is a challenge. Now if you look at even the basic school, government is supposed to provide textbooks for new curriculum at the primary, JHS and even including the secondary schools,” he said.

He disclosed that since 2019, the government has not made provision for some essential textbooks for basic schools.

Rev Owusu added that teachers are also yet to undergo training that will enable them implement a new curriculum in the basic schools.

“Since 2019, from KG1 to class six, the Ministry of Education together with GES has not been able to supply all the textbooks at the primary and KG level. The JHS level are also to start their new curriculum, teachers are yet to receive training to start the implementation.”

He went on, “now the teachers who are teaching the children in 2021, the vice president launched the one teacher, 1 laptop policy, now the promise was that within one year, teachers at the pre-tertiary level, that is from KG to secondary school were to receive laptops.”

“But as I speak to you now, teachers in primary and teachers in administration, they are yet to receive the laptop. So some of us should be surprised that the people that are implementing the new curriculum are yet to receive the laptop and then you leave those people and say now we’re moving to the new level, secondary school to give all students, first and second year students laptops each,” he said on Accra-based TV3.

To him, government should be focused on fulfilling earlier promises and some basic but crucial needs before making new promises.

The government, through the Ministry of Education, is preparing to replace textbooks with laptops in Senior High Schools across the country.

Speaking at the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School, Dr Bawumia announced that textbooks and other teaching and learning materials would be installed on the laptops to be used during lessons on May 27, 2023.

Dr Bawumia said the initiative, which will solely be for first and second years in the secondary schools, would be implemented before the end of 2023.

This bold initiative has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with users expressing a mix of excitement, skepticism, and concerns about the implementation and potential impact on students.

Heated exchanges in parliament between Mpraeso MP, Okudzeto over reliefs for spillage victims –

0

On November 8, 2023, a clash erupted in parliament between Members of Parliament for Mpraeso and North Tongu, Davies Ansah Opoku and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, respectively.

The heated argument came about as there were differing views on the distribution of relief items to the affected communities after the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The core of the disagreement between the two MPs revolved around whether or not the North Tongu MP, and other MPs from the affected areas, had received relief items from the government.

While Okudzeto vehemently dismissed the claims made by Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, that the Volta River Authority (VRA) had provided relief items and that MPs had received them, Davies Ansah Opoku insisted that he indeed had received such items.

The Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, appeared before parliament to update it on the disaster that came about after the spillage of the Akosombo and the Kpong Dams.

Replying to the statement made by the Minister of Energy regarding the dam spillage, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa accused the minister of spreading falsehoods concerning the Akosombo Dam.

“Another falsehood is that VRA is sharing relief items, and that Members of Parliament have received their share. When? Which Member of Parliament has received shares of relief items? And such a dangerous statement for our constituents to come after us. As I speak as Member of Parliament for North Tongu, the most affected constituency, no VRA official has given me relief items – not a grain of rice; not a bottle of oil. No Member of Parliament” he said.

However, the Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, who spoke immediately after Okudzeto, said that the Minority MPs had created an impression that the government was unresponsive.

He cited an instance where the North Tongu MP had posted on his Facebook wall, a visit by the Minister of Finance to the North Tongu Constituency, indicating that the MP received items during this visit

“And he received items. He was the person leading the charge. And so to now make the claim that VRA has not done anything for me, is falsehood,” he said.

He also pointed out that the Minister of Education had visited the constituency, donating items that originated from the government, hence, it was inaccurate to suggest that the government had not taken any action.

Immediately the Mpraeso MP referenced the visit of the finance minister, Samuel Okudzeto up stood to defend himself.

When he got the chance, the North Tongu MP stated that although the finance minister visited the constituency, he did not receive anything from him.

He described the claim by Davies Ansah Opoku as blatant lies.

“Mr. Speaker, it is important. I have not received anything from the Finance Minister. I have not. The Minister for Finance visited my constituency, and I have received everything from him. This is a house of records. I will not accept you lying to me. These are blatant lies,” he said angrily.

The Mpraeso MP also in his defence, read out the Facebook post to the house.

But Okudzeto maintained that a visit cannot be misconstrued that he has received relief items from him [the finance minister].

KFCB Issues Demand Letter to Musicians Embarambamba and Getumbe

0

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has flagged musicians Chris Embarambamba and William Getumbe over their latest releases, deeming them unsuitable for public consumption, particularly among children.

Chris Embarambamba’s song, “Niko Uchi,” has ignited controversy due to its purported gospel theme, which the KFCB argues mocks the Christian religion.

Additionally, the song allegedly includes nudity, and vulgarity, and promotes violent and imitable behaviors, raising concerns about its potential impact on impressionable audiences, especially minors.

Similarly, William Getumbe’s track, “Yesu Ninyandue,” has faced criticism for its blasphemous nature and potential to offend religious sensitivities.

KFCB has banned both songs while threatening legal action against the musicians.

On Wednesday, KFCB Acting CEO Nelly Muluka issued a statement identifying Embarambamba and Getumbe’s works as violating the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya. This legislation mandates the examination and approval of all content before public distribution or exhibition.

“The song titled: ‘Niko Uchi’, which is purported gospel invites ridicule to the Christian religion, also contains nudity, vulgarity. It has further been noted that some of the artist’s dancing styles are violent and others present imitable behaviour, which if copied by children/minors, can be dangerous and disastrous,” Muluka said.

KFCB has sent demand letters to Chris Embarambamba and William Getumbe, instructing them to remove any inappropriate content from their respective platforms. Non-compliance with these directives may lead to legal repercussions, as outlined by the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222.

Additionally, the KFCB has contacted relevant media platforms, directing them to take down the tracks.

The board at the same time highlighted religious performances by a Bishop known as ‘Johanna,’ accusing him of using his religious influence to “mislead the public through indecent exposure performances with sexual innuendos” among other concerns.

Simultaneously, the KFCB CEO asserts that the board maintains its vigilance in enforcing compliance with established regulations. The goal is to promote responsible content creation within the Kenyan creative industry.

‘Your career is dead’ — Davido hits back at Wizkid for trolling him

0

Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has responded to his industry rival and colleague Wizkid for trolling him on social media.

The latter, in a series of social media posts in the early hours of Monday, April 29, took a swipe at some Nigerian industry giants including Don Jazzy, whom he termed as an influencer, Davido and others.

In one of the posts, he posted a video which recently circulated purportedly capturing Davido on his knees and begging a woman for sex.

In a response in the late hours of Monday, Davido said things like this are why he stopped wasting his millions of dollars in endorsement deals on Wizkid.

He further noted that Wizkid’s career, which was already dead, was resurrected just to die again.

“That’s what I thought. Nothing to say! Exactly why I stopped wasting my clout and jeopardizing my millions of US dollars in endorsements on someone whose career was resurrected a few years ago just to die again. NEXT!,” he wrote.

In response, Wizkid jabbed that he can retire from singing today, yet Davido can never be at his level.

“I got nothing to say to u, my boy! I can retire today and you still not on my level. You be an influencer with a songwriter. Wish u well,” he wrote.
