Sentiments over VAT on electricity negative due to economic hardship – ECG –

0

The External Communications Manager with the Electricity Company Ghana (ECG), Laila Abubakari, has stated that there has been a lot of negative feedback from customers about the Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, January 23, she said customers are abhorred about the announcement of the VAT on some category of electricity consumers.

She, however, said ECG is yet to implement the directive.

Earlier, Madam Abubakari pointed out that ECG is engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Finance, the Ghana Revenue Authority, and other relevant stakeholders to comprehend the specifics of the tax implementation.

“It’s been a challenge because we interface with the customers daily. The [customers] first point of call is us. I try to let them understand that this is something that is coming from the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority. Ours is to implement.

“It is unfortunate that we interface with them and have to hear their sentiments. The sentiments out there generally aren’t good because of the economic hardships that a lot of people are facing,” she stated.

According to her, it is unfortunate that ECG cannot do anything about these sentiments explaining that “ECG’s legal ammunition does not come in for us to advocate in any effective manner for the customer.”

She added that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is mandated to advocate for the customer.

Her comments follow the Trades Union Congress’ (TUC) request to the government to withdraw the Value Added Tax on electricity consumption beyond the lifeline threshold, highlighting its negative impact on ordinary citizens.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta in a letter dated January 1, 2024, instructed the ECG and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to implement the VAT on non-lifeline residential consumption, to generate revenue for the COVID-19 recovery programme.

The government has outlined the rationale for the imposition of a 15 percent VAT on electricity consumption. This measure is part of the government’s COVID-19 recovery programme, aiming to generate additional revenue.

A Deputy Energy Minister, Agyapa Mercer in a media interview emphasised that while it was a challenging decision, it is necessary to settle debts owed to independent power producers.

“If you look at the scope of the tax and what it is intended to do—raise revenue to meet some obligations of the government in the energy sector—it will interest you to know that, as we speak, as of July 2023, the amount of money that we owe to the IPPs alone is in the region of GH¢1.7 billion.”

However, the announcement has been met with opposition from the Minority and energy experts who have called on the government to repeal the VAT imposed on specific categories of residential electricity consumers.

Former President John Mahama joined in the calls, arguing that the move will only pile up the cost of electricity, which has already experienced some increases.

The latest to protest over the VAT is the Trade Unions. They have issued a 7-day ultimatum to the government to withdraw the tax.

Adane Best

Celebrated highlife musician, Adane Best, who went on a long break to work on some private projects, has announced plans of returning to the music industry in April this year to celebrate his 31 years in music.

The artiste, who made contemporary music attractive in Ghana, will mark his 31st year in the industry in an unconventional way.

In an interview on Okay FM, he revealed that his new song to announce his comeback will be released in April this year.

He mentioned that the song is a blend of Twi and Ga, touching on real life experiences, and left the rest to the imagination of his fans.

As one of the veteran musicians, Adane Best believes that the new song has the potential of becoming a big hit on the Ghanaian music market when it is released.

All his songs offer great inspirations to all Christians and most of the songs are mid-tempo with beautiful rhythms, great bass tunes and drum beats to match.

Ever since he joined the music industry three decades ago, he has been recognised as a great singer whose inspiring songs have had a progressive impact on the music industry in Ghana.

The release of the song, according to him, will be followed by a star-studded concert to be hosted at Bukom, where he was born and bred.

Although he did not announce the date for the concert, Adane Best revealed that a number of A-list artistes, particularly those dominating the Ga language would share the stage with him.

On how he has managed to be relevant all these years, he listed grace and humility as the major factors.

Since his emergence in 1982, Adane Best has seven studio albums of which all his songs are bangers.

‘Se Wu Bre’ released in 1994, ‘Wa Nu Pe Asem’- 1996, ‘Rabbi’ –1999, ‘Maafio’, ‘Soja Go Soja Come’ – 2002, ‘Ayekoo’ – 2004 and ‘Mamamia’.

Highlife At Grammy Long Overdue —Abiana |

0

Highlife artiste, Abiana, like her colleagues in the music industry and many Ghanaians, is beside herself with joy for the acceptance of Highlife music by the Recording Academy of the United States (US), popularly known as Grammy Awards; however, she believes it was long overdue.

Yesterday, June 13, 2023, Ghana’s Drill and Highlife music genres were announced as part of relevant African music styles for the Best African Performance category at this year’s Grammy awards.

The Best African Performance category is one of the three new slots that have been added to the 2024 edition of the prestigious music awards scheme. The other two are the Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.

The Grammy awards are presented by the Recording Academy of the US to recognise outstanding achievements in the music industry. They are regarded by many as the most prestigious and significant awards in the music industry worldwide.

In a conversation with Graphic yesterday, Abiana, 2021 Vodafone Ghana Awards (VGMA) Best Female Vocal Performance winner, said Highlife music had travelled around the world with the likes of Osibisa and Ebo Taylor, among others, becoming global music icons, an indication the genre attained international recognition and repute a very long time ago.

She described Grammy’s recognition as a good cause even though the progress of Highlife had not been loud on the global front in recent years and, therefore, supported the call for Ghanaian musicians to have a collective identity for their music.

“We are all happy for this acknowledgement but this is long overdue. But who do we blame? As stakeholders, we must take the responsibility to forcefully promote what we have.

“Yes, I see an ongoing debate about how Ghana needs an identity in terms of how our music should be called, I believe that Highlife is the main core of music that Ghanaians are celebrated for.

“If you look at the past, Highlife has done a lot for Ghana, Looking at Osibisa and recently, Rocky Dawuni’s The Voice of Bunbon, which was nominated in the Global category at the Grammy awards was Highlife. This shows that anytime Ghana gains global mention for music, Highlife is there but we are not branding it.

“We need to go back to it and then as artistes, intentionally call ourselves Highlife musicians so that the brand will be globally recognised,” she said.

Alex Boateng, Godfred Quansah and Sadique Kamil in a pose

Members of the Audio Visual Rights Society of Ghana (ARSOG), have passed a resolution at a crunch meeting to remove the board of directors whose term of office expired in 2021 but were still in office.

The Chairman, Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, who led the meeting at the Teachers Hall in Accra, declared the intention of the meeting by citing clauses 11, 13, and 15 of ARSOG’s Constitution which references: the terms of office of the board, their powers, duties, and filling of vacancy.

Out of the eight (8) old board members, five (5) who attended the meeting accepted that their tenure of office has expired, and that they are in support of any new decision the members take.

The old directors removed were Mr. Kofi Owusu Ohemeng, Mr. Emmanuel Sarpong, Mr. Augustine Abbey, Mr. Evans Kumi Wadewor, Mr. Christopher Nimo, Mr. Ahmed Saani, Mr. Taju Yusif, and Mrs. Mercy Agyeman Duah.

After dissolving the old board, a three-member interim board which comprises Mr. Alex Boateng, Mr. Godfred Quansah, and Mr. Sadique Kamil was appointed to oversee the election of a new board within three months.

The old board members who were elected in 2018 have failed to hold meetings as demanded by the ARSOG Constitution, and also failed to hand over power in 2021 when their term ended.

Cecilia Dapaah was loyal; her integrity will be established

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has applauded Cecilia Abena Dapaah’s loyalty in protecting the image of his government following her resignation as Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.

The president praised Madam Dapaah’s work at the ministry, which he described as excellent and productive.

Madam Dapaah submitted her resignation letter to the president on Saturday, July 22, 2023, a day after she became the talk of the town because her house helps had allegedly stolen huge sums of foreign and local currencies from her residence in Accra.

The two house helps, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei, allegedly stole the monies and personal effects of Abena Dapaah and her husband between the months of July and October 2022.

Two house helps of the minister and three others are currently facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing an amount of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis at the former minister’s residence at Abelenkpe, Accra, in October 2022.

The president, in an acceptance note, described the resignation as regrettable and intimated that he is confident the minister’s integrity while in office will be established.

Below is the President’s acceptance note.

I have received your letter, dated Saturday, 22nd July 2023, resigning from office as Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources and as a member of the Government. It is with considerable regret that I accept your resignation, and I applaud your loyalty to the image and standing of the Government. The work you undertook during your period in Government was excellent and productive, and I thank you for your wholehearted contribution and devotion to the progress of the Government and the Nation. I am confident, like you, that, at the end of the day, your integrity, whilst in office, will be fully established. I wish you the very best in all your endeavours.

It is no too late to win Ghana Premier League

Emmanuel Dasoberi Newton

Administrative Manager of Asante Kotoko, Emmanuel Dasoberi Newton believes it is not too late for the club to emerge as the champions of the season.

The Porcupine Warriors have failed to live up to expectations after nine games played into the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League campaign.

Kotoko sits 14th on the summit with 10 points having recorded two wins, three defeats and four draws.

The technical team led by Prosper Narteh Ogum has come under pressure following the uninspiring performance of the team.

At a press conference to address the recent performance of the team, Mr Newton admitted that the team has not been great but remains optimistic that they will win the Premier League title.

“It’s not too late, we can still make it. We have done it before and we can do it again,” he told the media on Wednesday.

“We will do our maximum best to ensure that we clinch the trophy at the end of the season,” he added.

Asante Kotoko will be hosted by FC Samartex 1996 in the matchday 10 games at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex on Saturday with kick off scheduled at 15:00GMT.

‘City Can Now Visualise Treble’

0

Pep Guardiola said his Manchester City players can “visualise” the treble after thrashing Real Madrid to reach the Champions League final.

City won 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium to win the tie 5-1 on aggregate and is now just three wins away from winning the Premier League title, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

Guardiola has repeatedly distanced himself from talk of a treble — achieved only once before in English football by Manchester United in 1999 — but after crushing Madrid, the City boss admitted his squad has started to think about the prospect of writing themselves into the history books.

“Let me win the first two,” said Guardiola when asked about City’s chance of winning the treble. “In the Premier League we are close. We know we need one more game and I would say we play against our neighbours [Manchester United] and against an Italian team [Internazionale] in the finals. The season is really, really good, now we have to lift it. We are close and of course we are going to try.

“We are there, we can think about it, we can visualise it. We are three games away. One each of the competitions, we can do it.”

City’s thrilling victory over Madrid came after their dramatic exit at the hands of the Spanish giants at the same stage of last year’s Champions League. Madrid scored twice in stoppage time in the second leg last May to book a place in the final at City’s expense, and Guardiola admitted the pain of that night in the Bernabeu 12 months ago had played a part in the performance.

Mikel Arteta delivers Bukayo Saka injury update

0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has allayed fears about Bukayo Saka after the England winger was withdrawn during Monday night’s 3-0 FA Cup third round win over Oxford.

The 21-year-old was treated for what appeared to be discomfort in his right knee with the Gunners 2-0 up, and he was taken off immediately before Arsenal scored a decisive third.

Saka has featured in all but one of Arsenal’s 25 games in all competitions so far this season, starting 20 of them and missing on the Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton in November. Saka has also had a direct hand in 13 goals (seven scored, six assists).

But Arteta was able to give a positive update after the final whistle, telling broadcaster ITV: “He is fine, he was fine.”

It therefore bodes well for Saka being fit when the Gunners makes the short trip to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the north London derby on Sunday.

This is now part of a crunch period for Arsenal, with a resurgent Manchester United to visit the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League and an FA Cup tie against Manchester City before the end of January. The Gunners still lead the Premier League by five points ahead of City.

Listen now as Scott Saunders hosts Graeme Bailey and Toby Cudworth in the latest episode of Talking Transfers. This week they discuss Man Utd’s interest in Mohammed Kudus, Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea, Jude Bellingham’s decision and Mykhaylo Mudryk’s preferred move. Available on all audio platforms.

But fans are keen for the club to use the January transfer window to strengthen in order to maintain that advantage until the end, especially after seeing Chelsea close in on Joao Felix.

Arsenal themselves remain in talks over a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk, having so far seen offers of €60m and €70m rejected. Shakhtar ue the player at €90m, citing the summer transfer of Antony to Manchester United for a similar amount.

Arteta gave little away on Monday when the topic of recruitment came up.

“My job is to make those players [we have] as good as I can, we try to do that and if we have any reinforcements then great,” the boss explained.

Pepper soup consumers live longer

0

Good news for pepper soup consumers. A recent study by Semaniuk et al.(2022) showed that the regular use of chili peppers whether in soup or any other form improves life spans.

Indeed, chili pepper fruits contain phenolic substances which are structurally similar to those that show anti-aging properties.

Chili powder added to food in concentrations of 0.04%-0.12% significantly extended the median lifespan in fruit fly cohorts of both genders by 9% to 13%.

However, food supplemented with 3% chili powder shortened the lifespan of male cohorts by 9%.

A previous report by the American Heart Association (2020) also revealed that consumption of chili peppers may reduce the relative risk of cardiovascular disease mortality by 26%, according to an analysis of diet and mortality data from four large, international studies.

Chili pepper consumption was associated with a 25% reduction in death from any cause and 23% fewer cancer deaths, compared to people who never or only rarely consumed chili pepper.

These studies drew my attention to the Nigerian Pepper soup and the Ghanaian light soups with hot spices. For instance, one study by Jiang TA(2019) found that frequent consumption of spicy foods was also linked to a lower risk of death from cancer and ischemic heart and respiratory system diseases.

However, the actual role of spices and herbs in the maintenance of health, specifically concerning protecting against the development of chronic, non-communicable diseases, is currently unclear.

In the case of the Nigerian pepper soup is embedded with a burst of natural flavors and spices that awaken your food senses and set your appetite straight. It is very versatile as it can be made with various fleshy foods like turkey, chicken, fish, and even our nutrient-packed offals.

Adegoke et al.(2015) study evaluated the perception of consumers on the culinary, social, and health attributes of pepper soup. A structured questionnaire was used to identify reasons for taking pepper soup, the preferred type of pepper soup, the social environment for the consumption of pepper soup, beverage accompaniment preferred with pepper soup, and types of food preferred as accompaniment with pepper soup.

It also evaluated the perception of the claimed health benefits of the constituents of pepper soup. The survey indicated that pepper soup was mostly a weekly and occasional diet taken by respondents for enjoyment (68.3%) and relaxation (55.8%).

About 90.2, 85.9, 90.2, and 92% of the respondents preferred catfish, goat meat, chicken, and cow tail, respectively, as the flesh components in their pepper soup.

The preferred color, texture, and flavor was either light or dark brown, viscous or light, and peppery and spicy. Hot and warm pepper soup was preferred by 97% and 65.8% of the respondents, respectively.

The respondents (66.3 and 79%) preferred to take their pepper soup with beer and wine, while 75.9 and 90.7% of respondents had a preference for non-alcoholic beverages as accompaniments preferred carbonated beverages and juices or mineral water, respectively.

The majority of respondents (60.5 ± 8.52%) disagreed significantly that pepper soup possessed most of the health benefits associated with herbs, spices, and other constituents of pepper soup, implying that pepper soup may not be consumed for its perceived medicinal value.

The nutritional benefits of pepper soup generally depend on the ingredients that are used in its preparation. The spices and condiments used have been rooted to be effective in medical treatments

Pepper soup is a healthy dish that is packed with nutrients. The soup is low in calories and fat, and it is a good source of protein.

Pepper soup is also high in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, iron, and potassium. In addition to being healthy, pepper soup is also a delicious and easy-to-make dish. The soup can be made with chicken, goat meat, or yams. Pepper soup can also be spiced to taste.

An article by Eunice Olaleye(2022) published in the Tribune revealed that a scientific review by Dr Heben’s team on DrHealthBenefits.com says that the soup does help to control heart rate.

It also helps to control blood pressure and keep it from getting ridiculously high or low. In other words, it helps to stabilize blood pressure.

Another medicinal function of pepper soup is that it chases away free radicals that could cause cancer because it is an antioxidant(Nwose EU, 2009; Agbor et al. 2019).

Pepper soup can relieve you of cold and cough. There are several other medicinal benefits it has that you should look out for.

The author also revealed that the soup is good for the cold weather. Hot and spicy pepper soup is essential to provide warmth for your body. It’s a win-win. You enjoy your pepper soup and your body gets warmth while you are at it.

According to youmustgethealthy.com, what makes pepper soup healthy is the ingredients found in it. Unripe plantain, fresh catfish, cow skin, beef, or goat meat can be found in pepper soup, and they don’t only taste nice; they contain anti-oxidants.

Consuming pepper soup is one way to ensure adequate intake of nutrients all while staying hydrated. Due to its spicy nature, one tends to take in a lot of water.

Key Takeaways

From the literature, pepper soup made with local spices has many health benefits.  Also, theAmerican Heart Association(2020) also revealed that the consumption of peppers or hot spices may reduce the relative risk of cardiovascular disease mortality by 26%, according to an analysis of diet and mortality data from four large, international studies. Chili pepper consumption was associated with a 25% reduction in death from any cause and 23% fewer cancer deaths, compared to people who never or only rarely consumed chili pepper.

With this information, lovers of hot spices can add them to their diets in any form to improve their health.

Anthony Baffoe Shares The Same Sentiment With Stephen Appiah On The Administration of Football.

0

Anthony Baffoe, the first Ghanaian expatriate player to play for the Black Stars of Ghana, has publicly agreed with former captain Stephen Appiah.

Stephen Appiah, the Black Stars captain who helped Ghana qualify for their first World Cup in Germany in 2006, made a bold statement in an interview with Sompa FM in Kumasi last Saturday.

Stephen Appiah, a former Accra Hearts of Oak sensation, rose through the ranks, representing the Black Stars 67 times and scoring 14 goals.

Stephen Appiah, the 2007 Turkish Footballer of the Year, has served as Black Star Team Manager since May 2017 but was fired after the Black Stars’ dismal performance in Cameroon during the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He stated that former footballers should take centre stage in football administration in Ghana rather than highly educated individuals who are the country’s frontiers in managing football.

Appiah disclosed in an interview with Sompa FM/TV that “Legends and former players are not getting the chance around football administration. I have learned something: football is run by footballers. It is not the grammar or English that you speak.”

He emphasised the importance of football, particularly how he could follow the instructions of an Italian coach despite his inability to communicate in Italian.

“It is about insights, which is why, when I went to Italy without speaking Italian, I could understand the coach who was speaking Italian. I hope that one day—not me, Stephen Appiah necessarily—but I hope one day, one of us will get to lead and we will all support,” Appiah disclosed.

Anthony Baffoe, a Ghanaian legend and former deputy general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has declared on his official Twitter handle that he shares the same sentiment as Ghana’s first World Cup captain.

The former Fortuna Düsseldorf defender tweeted, “I totally agree with our Capitano @StephenAppiah.”

Agya Koo campaigns for Kennedy Agyapong –

0

A video making waves online captures Popular Kumawood actor, Agya Koo, strongly campaigning for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong.

Prior to this development, Agya Koo had on several occasions declared his loyalty to Mr. Agyapong and with the campaign season in place, he has seized the opportunity to re-emphasize it.

In the said video, the actor was clad in a ‘Showdown’ campaign shirt while grooving to the song he produced for his ‘Mentor’.

Titled ‘Onoa’, the lyrics which was expressed in Twi, conveyed messages of support for Kennedy Agyapong.

“Who is that coming? He’s the one. Is it Kennedy? Yes, he’s the one…Kennedy Agyapong is coming, let’s all meet him,” parts of the song expressed.

However, Agya Koo’s endorsement song has garnered lots of traction on social media.

While some alleged that he is embarking on such a venture for monetary gains, others have commended him for his unflinching support and loyalty to Mr. Kennedy Agyapong.

Govt Resolves To Prioritise TVET

0

Prof. Mark Adom Asamoah

The Government has expressed its resolve to make Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) a priority in the country’s school curriculum given its role in addressing unemployment in the country.

STEM Policy Advisor, Ministry of Education, Prof. Mark Adom Asamoah, who mentioned this at a TVET symposium in Accra, said the government has therefore initiated various policies and programmes aimed at improving TVET institutions as part of its transformation agenda in the last seven years.

That, he said, included the development of new competency based training curricula, investment in TVET infrastructure, TVET teacher training among others.

“To ensure that the country realises the full benefits of TVET, the government has been championing the implementation of Competency Based Training (CBT), which emphasises skills and knowledge required for a particular job or trade,” he noted.

“The globalisation of businesses and the cosmic growth in technology, communication, transport, tourism socio-cultural changes and global economic development have put the TVET sector at the forefront of development needs,” he added.

According to him, a total of 60,481 students have enrolled in various government TVET institutions compared to less than 20,000 students who enrolled prior to the assumption of office of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration in 2017.

Prof. Adom Asamoah also attributed such a sharp increase to the realignment of TVET institutions to the Ministry of Education, consolidation of free TVET for all as well as MyTVET campaign in the 2023/2024 academic year.

He further mentioned that the implementation of the Ghana Jobs and Skills Project is one of the milestones undertaken by the government to reduce unemployment, coupled with the upgrading of 10 technical universities and other technical institutes to provide training in electrical and electronics, engineering, welding, technology among others.

The symposium which brought together scores of stakeholders in the educational sector and other dignitaries, was held on the theme, “Advancing TVET and skills development towards sustainable and decent jobs”.

Senate Suspends Ningi For Three Months Over Budget Padding Claim

0

The Senate under the leadership of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday suspended Senator Abdul Ningi over allegations of N3.7trn padding of the 2024 Budget.

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the lawmaker, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District was suspended for three months after a long stormy session in the red chamber.

It was gathered that a member of the Appropriation Committee in the Senate, Jimoh Ibrahim, first moved the motion for Ningi’s suspension for 12 months over allegations of criminal misinformation and breach of peace in the National Assembly and the country by extension.

However, other lawmakers like Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong moved for the amendment of the motion by Ibrahim. Ekpenyong, who is from Cross River South Senatorial District; and Senator Abdulfatai Buhari from Oyo North prayed for the reduction of the suspension to six and three months respectively.

Akpabio, who described Ningi’s offences as grievous, conducted a voice vote during which most of the lawmakers voted in support of Ningi’s suspension for three months.

Recall that Ningi, a Peoples Democratic Party’s Senator, had claimed that the Federal Government is operating two versions of the 2024 budget and that the N28.7 trillion Budget passed and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu was skewed against the North.

Many Senators and the Presidency had pounced on Ningi, describing his claims as “far-fetched and unbecoming of a leader of his status”.

Independent candidates with the same name battle for power in Kumawu by-election

0

The two Kwaku Duahs will appear in a consecutive order on the ballot paper on May 23

Kumawu is gearing up for a by-election on May 23, 2023, following the unfortunate passing of their Member of Parliament (MP), Philip Basoah.

The race has generated intrigue due to a captivating development involving two out of the four approved candidates.

Ernest Yaw Anim, the elected candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is expected to face a tough challenge in the party’s quest to retain the seat.

His main competitors include Kwaku Duah, a former party member who ran independently against the late MP in the 2020 election.

During an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr Duah accused the NPP of pressuring him to withdraw from the race.

He firmly stated: “No amount of intimidation will change the minds of Kumawu and what they believe. They have decided to give me the nod, and so the NPP is scared, which is why they are trying to force me to step down, but I won’t.”

Mr Duah emphasised his commitment to the constituency and his determination to continue his developmental work, irrespective of external interference.

In addition to Mr Duah’s re-entry into the race, the NPP is also concerned about the candidacy of Kwasi Amankwah from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Some view Mr Amankwah as a potential beneficiary of the situation and believe he could secure a victory in the traditionally NPP-held seat.

The contest took on another layer of intrigue with the emergence of a new independent candidate named Kwaku Duah, leading to speculation that he may be sponsored by the ruling NPP to undermine the leading independent candidate.

The younger Duah, who hails from Bodomase, chose a dove as his symbol on the ballot paper, coincidentally mirroring the symbol of the senior Kwaku Duah.

During the same show, the second Kwaku Duah dismissed claims that he was being backed by the NPP.

While he declined to disclose his previous party affiliation before becoming an independent candidate, he asserted his right as a native of the town to contest the election and expressed confidence in his ability to compete for power.

The by-election at Kumawu carries significant weight due to the competition between established political parties and independent candidates, as well as the unique situation of two candidates sharing the same name.

I will vote Alan for president and NDC MP candidate – Hopeson Adorye –

0

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Kpone-Katamanso, Hopeson Adorye has announced that he has rescinded his decision to vote for the party’s parliamentary candidate in the 2024 general election.

According to Adorye who had earlier stated his decision to vote the NPP MP candidate in his constituency and for independent candidate Alan Kyerematen in the presidential election; he has now decided to cast his parliamentary vote for a candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Now, for the parliamentary, I will vote for NDC and vote Alan Kyerematen as president. They said they don’t want my vote. I won’t spoil my vote. If I vote for any other candidate in the presidential election, it will be a wasted vote.

“Alan is the best and in the same vein I will vote for the NDC candidate in the parliamentary election,” he stated in an interview on Hello FM.

His statement comes on the back of a recent release signed by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua announcing the forfeiture of NPP membership for Hopeson Adorye and three others.

Boniface Abubakar Saddique, Yaw Buaben Asamoa and Nana Ohene Ntow alongside Adorye were deemed to have left the party for declaring their support for Mr Alan Kyerematen who has resigned from the NPP to contest the 2024 election as an independent candidate.

Alan Kyerematen who was a contender in the NPP’s recently held presidential primary withdrew from the race and announced his resignation to form a new political movement dubbed Movement for Change.

The former trade and industry minister said his resignation was grounded in the unfair treatment meted out to him and his supporters by leadership of the ruling party.

He further accused the party’s leadership of skewing the race in favour of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who emerged the eventual winner of the race.

Akufo-Addo’s silence on ‘galamsey’ during SONA perplexing

0

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for not addressing the issue of illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’, during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA).

At a press briefing on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Dr. John Kwakye, the IEA’s Director of Research, questioned why the President did not discuss the measures in place to combat illegal mining, despite it posing a threat to Ghanaians.

He expressed concern over the destructive activities of “Galamsey”, which have caused significant damage to Ghana’s forests and water bodies.

“Galamsey” is a menace that is wreaking havoc on the country in terms of degradation of our forests and water bodies, representing an existential threat for us! Therefore, for the President not to mention it in his SONA was a bit perplexing,” Dr Kwakye said.

Dr. Kwakye acknowledged the government’s strategic investments to address the menace.

He suggested that the limited success of the government’s efforts to achieve its goal could be attributed to the existence of strong vested interests.

Dr Kwakye proposed that a combination of regulatory efforts and a strong sanctions regime are needed to control the menace.

“The Government has implemented a number of strategies and invested quite an amount of capital in dealing with “Galamsey.” However, limited success has been achieved so far. This appears to be due to the existence of strong vested interests in the business, involving well-placed individuals and groups.

“It would take concerted efforts in regulation, community engagement and a strong sanctions regime to bring the menace under control and avoid its potentially disastrous consequences.”

Saudi League Target Salah, De Bruyne

0

Saudi Pro League (SPL) teams are targeting a number of Premier League stars ahead of the summer transfer window, a source told ESPN.

Established players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Raphaël Varane, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Andreas Pereira are all on the agenda for next season.

A source told ESPN that there will also be a push to sign younger players, including Juventus’ 20-year-old forward Matìas Soulè.

Sources in Saudi Arabia are not expecting top-flight teams to match their record £757 million ($957m) spend from 2023 but insist this summer’s transfer strategy will be equally aggressive and the outlay on player fees is set to be significant.

In the summer of 2023, SPL transfer spend was second only to the £1.1 billion ($1.39bn) spent by the Premier League.

Sources told ESPN that Al Ahli are in the market for a striker, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr are keen to sign a goalkeeper, and Al Ittihad are looking to bring in a centre-back and a central midfielder.

Al Hilal, who signed Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, are top of the SPL table, seven points clear of Al Nassr.

Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth Public Investment Fund (PIF) owns controlling stakes in Al Ittihad, Al Ahli, Al Nassr and Al Hilal.

A source told ESPN that Al Qadisiyah are also expected to spend heavily in the summer if they get promoted to the SPL. They are top of the second division and are owned by Saudi Aramco, the state-owned national oil company of Saudi Arabia, which has a value of more than $2 trillion.

According to a source, the SPL will also attempt to lure more high-profile coaches.

Thomas Tuchel, who will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, FC Porto’s Sergio Conceicao and under-pressure Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino are among the names being mentioned as possible candidates.

I Am a Product of Haruna’s Leadership, I Never Wished for His Job – Ato Forson Speaks |

0

Cassiel Ato Forson has spoken for the first time about how he was informed about the National Democratic Congress’ decision to name him as their leader in parliament.

Ato Forson, Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, formally started his duties as Minority Leader on February 7, 2023 when Parliament resumed sitting after the Christmas break.

“I was told the night before. It’s a decision that the party had made so they were informing me not for me to make a choice as to whether I’m going to accept it or not to accept it. But I took it like a call to duty.

“In fact, it shook me, it took me by surprise. But what I told you earlier is that I adapt so easily and that’s my biggest strength, it doesn’t take me a couple of minutes to adapt so I sat back and said ‘hey…’” he said on PM Express programme on Joy News on February 8.

He also spoke extensively about how he did not wish for the job, suggesting that it had been given to him because of the party’s own considerations which he believes were justified.

On his relationship with Haruna Iddrisu, the former Minority Leader, Ato Forson said it remained cordial and that Haruna was the first person he contacted when he received news of the party’s decision.

“Let me put it this way, if there is any person in this House who has worked so hard for Haruna Iddrissu and worked for him, I don’t think there will be two people more than me. My loyalty to him is unquestionable.

“I’ve loved him; in fact, I’m a product of his leadership because he gave me room to work and to excel. It’s not every leader that will give his ranking the opportunity to excel at that magnitude,” he stressed.

Govt must explore other energy sources, not Emissions Levy

0

In opposition to the government’s Emissions Levy, the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG) is advocating for increased investments in diversifying Ghana’s energy mix.

FABAG emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the environment and discourages the imposition of a flat-rate levy on Ghanaians.

The chairman of FABAG, John Awuni on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, February 6, bemoaned the huge taxes already levied on Ghanaian companies and urged the government to withdraw the Emissions Levy.

John Awuni described the current economic situation as acidic, which he said is affecting the standards of living of Ghanaians and questioned the government’s reason for imposing the levy as a means to reduce emissions in hopes of protecting the environment.

“If the government has its ears on the ground, it will know that the economy is acidic. No salary growth has occurred in the past years. The incomes of people have dwindled, inflation rates are high, and rent, school fees, and medical bills have all gone up. Not only has the economy become acidic, but homes have also become acidic.

“If we have not achieved what the government said it was going to achieve to make it friendly for the environment in all these years, how can we trust that the government will be able to make the environment friendly with the Emissions Levy?”

He, therefore, urged the government to develop nuclear and solar energy sources to complement the country’s energy mix, which he said are also environmentally friendly.

“There are other energy sources that the government can turn to to save the environment. These include nuclear, solar, and hydro, but we are currently depending on hydro, so if the government wants to save the environment, it should explore other sources and not an emission levy.”

NPP Special Delegates Conference was skewed to favour Bawumia

0

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tamale Central constituency, Inusah Abdulai Fuseini, has alleged that the Special Delegates Conference recently held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was skewed in favour of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who swept 68% of the votes.

He claimed that the delegates were whipped into line to vote for Dr Bawumia, who has become the party’s establishment candidate for the 2024 polls.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia won the party’s Special Delegates’ Conference on August 26, with a total of 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the votes.

He was followed by Kennedy Agyapong who had 132 votes (14.30%). On the third and fourth positions were: Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto with 95 and 36 votes respectively. Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko secured 9 votes each.

Speaking to Selorm Adonoo on Citi TV’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue, the former legislator, who is a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress said, “I think that the Super Delegates’ Conference, did not live up to its name of providing a free and equitable level grounds for persons who were interested in leading the party to emerge freely from the system. The system was raped in favour of the establishment candidate, who is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. It appears the party had an establishment candidate and people were whipped in line to support the establishment candidate.”

He raised concerns about the level of intimidation perpetrated against agents of some aspirants who were against the candidacy of Dr Bawumia.

“There was some level of intimidation in the events leading up to the Super Delegates’ Conference. We heard about someone who was given a dirty slap in the North East region because he was representing the interest of a delegate. You could see some level of violence and intolerance. Clearly, there was some machination to get one candidate to emerge.”

Furthermore, he asserted, “There were a lot of inducements to get the outcome, violence was perpetrated against persons who clearly stood against the establishment, and the outcome clearly doesn’t represent the generality of the party. They might have to work at that and see how they unite their party.”

Touching on Alan Kyerematen who came third in the race, he mentioned the influence of money on the voting process, which affected the votes of Mr. Kyerematen who lacked the resources.

“There was an inundated use of money in the election. You see Alan Kyerematen’s performance? This time he’s not an establishment candidate. He couldn’t raise money to support his campaign as he did in the 2007 primaries of NPP. He was even called Alan Cash, you know the name is dead, he doesn’t have cash, so clearly you could see the role of cash in this election.”

The party was expected to hold a run-off election for Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko, on Saturday, September 2, 2023, to determine which of the two will be part of the top five ahead of the November 4 conference.

However, the party cancelled its plans to conduct the run-off after Boakye Agyarko refrained from the run-off, citing unconstitutional rules.

We’ll sit and build consensus if the witch-hunt ceases – Ablakwa

0

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says the Minority in Parliament is not ready to back down on its decision to abandon the legislature in solidarity with two of their colleagues facing criminal charges in the courts.

The Minority members boycotted parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, July 6, to solidarise with their leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson over their respective trials.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, Mr Ablakwa said the Minority members will only resume full duties if the persecution of their members is halted.

“We are saying that we now have to scale up, we are no longer going to adopt the business-as-usual approach. If they would stop the persecution, if they will stop the witch-hunt, then we can sit down and build consensus,” he told Evans Mensah.

The NDC accused President Nana Akufo-Addo of making prejudicial comments about the Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson’s criminal trial prior to his re-election at the bye-election.

While campaigning for Charles Opoku, the President urged the people of Assin North not to make a mistake by voting for the NDC’s parliamentary candidate in the bye-election.

The President suggested that Mr Quayson cannot deliver on the duties expected of him as a Member of Parliament because he could end up in jail due to the criminal trial he is facing, leaving the constituency without an MP.

On the back of these comments, Mr Ablakwa said “after listening to the President, it is so clear that this is a kangaroo process, this is a political witch-hunt and there is a clear attempt to prosecute political opponents, particularly in the era of hung Parliament so that they can weigh their options in a bye-election and see if they can snatch the seat and get a comfortable majority.”

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee said although the Minority is not enthused about neglecting their parliamentary duties, they have no option under the circumstances.

He, however, stated that the rank and file of the party and their constituents are backing them up on their resolution.

“Since the Minority Leader’s announcement, I can assure you that I was in the constituency over the weekend and I arrived to a rousing welcome…they say that it’s even been too long in coming,” he said.

About the respective cases

Dr Ato Forson is facing a trial in relation an alleged financial loss of €2.37 million to the state. The case involves a deal to purchase 200 ambulances between 2014 and 2016.

Mr Quayson is being tried for forgery and perjury after he was charged by the Attorney-General’s Office.

He is also accused of deceiving a public officer and knowingly making a false declaration when he filed nominations to contest in the 2020 election when he had not renounced his Canadian citizenship.

However, he has filed a motion on notice at the High Court for a stay of proceedings, pending an appeal.

Call off your strike – NLC as it summons striking NIA workers to appear before it –

0

The Public Services Workers Union – National Identification Authority (PSWU-NIA) has been directed by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to call off their strike.

The NLC issued the directive in a summons dated Monday, June 10, 2024.

According to media reports, the NLC noted that “the Executive Council of the PSWU ordered the indefinite cessation of all services provided by its members at the District Offices, Regional Offices, Headquarters, and Premium Centers, effective Monday, June 10, 2024.”

However, it indicated that the strike resulted from the Government’s failure to show good faith in the negotiation and implementation of better Conditions of Service for the staff of the NIA, among other issues.

The NLC, therefore, summoned the parties to appear before it on “Wednesday, 12 June 2024, at 11 am for a hearing of the issues in dispute.”

It also advised the union to call off the ongoing strike so all parties could appear as scheduled.

Staff of the NIA commenced an indefinite strike on Monday, June 10, 2024, over grievances related to their conditions of service.

This action was announced by the NIA chapter of the Divisional Executive Council of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Initially, the Union had planned to strike on March 24 but deferred their decision after meeting with representatives from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the management of the NIA. Despite this, the Union claims the government has since acted in bad faith during negotiations.

A statement signed by Council Secretary Kwabena Kyeremeh and Council Chairman Bangfudeme Nyuzaghi detailed their concerns, which include:

• The government team’s undue delays in the negotiation process.

• The government team’s posturing and reluctance to grant the NIA Institution-Specific Allowances.

• Failure on the part of management to implement the approved scheme of service for the staff of the NIA.

The Union has vowed to continue their strike until all their concerns are satisfactorily addressed.

Sometimes, the answer to your problems lies in your village – Yul Edochie –

0

Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has proposed that seeking support or guidance from one’s hometown or ancestral roots can be crucial at times.

He suggests that even fervent prayers may not always yield solutions to one’s problems.

However, by visiting their hometowns and posing the necessary questions, individuals can often find the right answers.

This, he believes, increases their likelihood of overcoming recurring challenges and attacks of various kinds.

He wrote on Instagram ” Prayer is good, But sometimes the answer to your problems lies in your village. Go home and ask questions. For some families, death has become a recurring thing. They have prayed for so long yet nothing has changed. Go to your village and ask questions. Do some consultations. Many anwers lies there.”

Liverpool up to second after beating Brentford

0

Mohamed Salah’s double means he has now scored 200 goals in English football

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool maintained their 100% record at Anfield this season with victory against Brentford to move up to second in the Premier League.

Salah opened the scoring just before the break, latching onto a pass from Darwin Nunez before placing a finish beyond Mark Flekken.

That was Salah’s ninth Premier League goal of the season and his 10th arrived midway through the second half when he nodded in from Kostas Tsimikas’ cross.

Salah – once again excellent on home soil – really should have had a hat-trick, having also volleyed over from a superb Trent Alexander-Arnold cross just before half-time.

Diogo Jota then rounded off another dominant home display with a thumping strike.

Brentford’s best chance had come in the first half, when Bryan Mbeumo raced through on goal but his chipped effort was tame and cleared off the line by Alexander-Arnold.

The victory means Liverpool have 27 points and move ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, while Brentford are 10th.

Ghanaian businessman signs MoU with Indian carbon credit supplier in $1 billion deal –

0

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Jospong Group of Companies, a Ghanaian diversified holding company led by businessman Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and EKI Energy Services, an Indian carbon credit developer and supplier.

The strategic partnership aims to boost carbon credit development in Ghana and West Africa, creating over 1,000 jobs by 2030.

The partnership also plans to mobilize $1 billion in carbon credit financing, using EKI Energy’s expertise in climate change solutions, carbon offset initiatives, and asset management to make a positive economic impact in the region.

Jospong Group Chairman Joseph Siaw Agyepong, one of Ghana’s most influential and wealthy businessmen, expressed his confidence in the partnership with EKI Energy at the signing ceremony in Accra.

“We are partnering with EKI Energy because of their experience, so they can guide us and drive strong development in the sector,” he said.

Agyepong also announced that he would provide scholarships for 10 people who want to study climate change this year, showing his dedication to developing future leaders in the field.

Jospong Group, which started as a printing press in 1995, has grown into a diversified holdings company that operates in 14 sectors of the economy, including Waste Management, ICT, Banking, Automobile, and Equipment. The group has expanded its operations beyond Ghana to other African countries and Asia.

Seven months ago, Jospong Group, under Agyepong’s leadership, made headlines with the inauguration of a modern wastewater treatment plant in Tamale, Ghana’s fourth-largest city.

The plant, which cost €20 million ($22.07 million) and was funded by the Hungarian government, was managed by Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Jospong Group.

The plant demonstrated the group’s commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions in the environmental sector.

Ministerial approval: NPP lauds parliament

0

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Koduah Frimpong, has commended parliament for approving the new ministerial nominees.

He explained that the action is proof that it was time for persons to set aside their political differences to serve the national interest.

“What happened on Thursday and Friday is proof that we’ve gotten to a point where we set aside our personal interests, personal ego or I will not support anything from my opposition party.

“I commend the parliamentarians, starting from the Speaker of Parliament to the majority caucus headed by Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu and the Minority Caucus led by Ato Forson. This is not NPP’s victory or NDC’s defeat, it’s Ghana’s victory.”

Mr Frimpong disclosed that since the Covid-19 pandemic sprung into the world, some allowances for government appointees have been scrapped.

To him, scrapped allowances and reduction of government appointees’ salaries are the same as reducing the size of government.

“Since Covid broke out, government appointees be it, ministers, CEOs salaries have been reduced by 30% to 50%. Some also do not enjoy fuel allowances anymore. And also allowances they get for attending meetings have all been scrapped.  So it is just like reducing the ministers.”

Explaining Adwoa Sarfo’s absence during the parliamentary voting session, he said the lawmaker informed party leadership.

“Adwoa Sarfo gave vivid explanations as to why she was absent to party leadership and we accepted it.”

He debunked claims that NPP director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah said that MPs of the Minority Caucus took bribes to vote in favour of the new ministerial nominees.

NPP MPs turn up in numbers as parliament decides fate of ministerial nominees

To him, some members of the minority voted in approval of the ministerial nominees because of their personal interest which is fair.

“Let’s not condone these things. I will be surprised that our NPP director of Communications will say that. I don’t believe he said that,” he said on Accra-based Neat FM.

He suggested that political parties work together as one to build a better Ghana.

Parliament approved six new ministerial nominees on Friday, March 24, 2023.

Out of the 275 Members of Parliament, three were absent including Dome Kwabenya’s Adwoa Sarfo while 272 voted.

Carpenter Jailed For Four Years For Biting Off Driver’s Right Ear | Social

0

A 42-year-old carpenter has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Adentan Circuit Court for biting off the right ear of a commercial driver during a dispute in Addoteiman, Accra.

Maxwell Senyo, who was charged with causing harm, pleaded guilty with an explanation.

After listening to his reasoning, Judge Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah convicted Senyo based on his plea.

According to Inspector Eric Ransford Abban, the prosecutor in the case, the victim, Anku Stephen, resides in Addoteiman, while the accused also lived in the same area.

On May 7, 2023, at approximately 8:00 PM, Stephen and his girlfriend were sitting under a tree near Senyo’s wooden structure.

While they were there, Senyo approached them and questioned whether they were looking for him. Stephen replied in the negative. Senyo then threatened to report Stephen as a thief to his father unless they left the area immediately.

This led to a confrontation between Senyo and Stephen. During the altercation, Senyo grabbed a branch from the tree and struck Stephen. Both men fell to the ground in the ensuing scuffle, and Senyo sustained injuries to his cheeks. In a disturbing turn of events, Senyo forcibly held Stephen’s head and bit off his right ear.

Police investigations later revealed that Senyo had bitten off the complainant’s ear simply because he was sitting close to Senyo’s wooden structure. Senyo admitted to the offense during police interrogation.

The court, presided over by Judge Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah, handed down a four-year prison sentence to Senyo for his violent act, causing severe harm to the victim.

Ablakwa Is ‘A Self-Acclaimed Crusader For The Rule Of Law In Ghana’ – Kusi Boateng Tells Court |

0

Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, alias Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng has described Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as a ‘self-acclaimed crusader for the rule of law.’

The two have dominated news headlines since last month when Ablakwa started publishing documents purporting to impugn impropriety and criminality on the party of Adu Gyamfi, a secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project.

Kusi Boateng has since instituted three different legal processes against the lawmaker, the latest of which is a contempt of court suit after the MP rejected two earlier summons he (Adi Gyamfi) had caused to be served on him.

In his statement of case, he told the court about the respondent against whom he had brought the case.

“That the Respondent is a Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress and a self-acclaimed crusader for the rule of law in Ghana,” the second point noted.

The courts have yet to hear the suit as well as a defamation case he has brought against the MP for false publications against his person.

The other suit is a 10-day restraining order barring Ablakwa from publishing any private documents as relates to his person.

Speaking on the qualities he wants in his future wife, Don Jazzy started that he wants a calm and understanding woman.

Don Jazzy opens up on his marriage

Recall that Don Jazzy was once married to Michelle Jackson.

In 2021, Don Jazzy, who has managed to keep his love life away from the prying eyes of the media and public shocked many when he revealed that he was once married.

He disclosed that he got married to an American model and author, Michelle Jackson, about 18 years ago at the age of 20, though the marriage crashed two years later.

According to the Mavin Records boss, the marriage failed because he devoted his time to music and neglected his family.

Sharing some pictures from his wedding, Don Jazzy wrote on social media, “For so long, everyone kept asking me when am I getting married? Well, the truth is that almost 18 years ago, I was 20 and I got married to my best friend, Michelle (@yarnstaswitch), and it was beautiful. I loved love and I loved marriage. Michelle is so beautiful inside and outside with such a soft heart.

But then, me being so young and full of dreams, I spoilt it because I was giving all my time to my music. Music became my priority, instead of my family. We got divorced when I was 22 and it hurt. I am still very much in love with my music and I would not want to marry another (person) and mess it up again. So, I’m taking my time. Why am I just saying this now I really like to keep my relationships private, actually. Past or present. But I was watching the Bounce interview with Ebuka which is almost like a tell-all interview, and I felt bad skipping this huge part of my life. So yes, you all should not be annoyed.”

Michelle Jackson speaks out

Speaking on their crashed marriage, with Naija FM 102.7, Michelle recounted her sweet times with the music executive.

According to her, she and Don Jazzy were married for two years and their union crashed because he was invested in his music.

Revealing how she met the singer, Michelle said they met at a club where he was giving out flyers to people to promote his music group.

She disclosed that when she looked at the flyer, she fell in love with the singer and a friend of hers and help her collect his number.

When she reached out to the singer, he paid her a visit at her home and the romance heat up from there.

She said, “We were married for couple of years. Precisely, two years. I met him when he came to my house. Before then,I had seen him at a club where he was giving out flyers to promote his group. When I saw the flyer, I liked him. I collected his phone number, he came visiting me in my house and that was were it all started”.

Kwakye Ofosu condemns NDC officials’ interference in party primaries

0

Former Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has condemned some leaders of the National Democratic Congress for what he said were their direct interference in the party’s just-ended primaries.

Accusing some of the leaders of interfering in the election at the constituency level, Mr Ofosu who spoke on PM Express on JoyNews, said that these actions could bring divisions to the party.

He explained that aspirants who lost the bid to represent their constituencies in the 2024 general elections would feel slighted and would not lend themselves to the development of the party going forward.

Mr Ofosu Kwakye said on Monday that “It is not unusual to have a situation where, based on one or two considerations, the party believes that this candidate is preferable to another. In instances like that what you use is dialogue to impress upon the person who will be adversely affected, as to why it is necessary to make that sacrifice. But if you do not do that and you attempt to sidestep or skew the process in a manner that makes it unfair, then you are going to have some difficulties.”

“Because anybody who loses an election and feels that the process was not fair, it was not balanced and that things were done in a manner to undermine his or her chances has a difficulty lending themselves to any reconciliatory process,” Mr Ofosu indicated.

He explained that the powers that be at the national leadership should live up to their responsibilities and act in ways that help advance the interest of the party.

Mr Ofosu, who won the Abura Asebu-Kwamankese candidacy on Saturday, stated that “I had a challenge with a national organiser and it resulted in some controversy but what business did a national organiser have interfering in a constituency election like that, and it’s not the only place he is accused of that.”

He called for the leadership at the national level to crack the whip on some of these actions explaining that if people are not called to order, reconciling the party especially calling on MPs who lost their candidacy could be a challenge.

“Consensus building is the best form of democracy but it does not make it seem that merely because you have power at the national level you are going to sidestep the process, treat someone unfairly and expect that they will come and bother, I expect the reconciliatory process to be deeper not superficial or shallow, people have been offended.”

“I expect the national leadership to take a serious view of this, that going forward they will put in place structures that make it impossible for people occupying such positions to interfere to poke their noses in that manner in constituencies that have such contests going on,” Mr Ofosu added.

Meanwhile, the Deputy National Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande has urged Mr Ofosu Kwakye and other MPs who have grievances to channel them to the party leadership officially so they could help unite the party ahead of the 2024 elections.

“The efforts of the National Executive Committee is to address the concerns of elected members and how to bring up those who have lost the elections so we can move together as a family,” he said on Top Story on Tuesday.

He added that “NEC headed by the chairman is positioned to reconcile the party alongside the flagbearer to see that we have a united from going into 2024. We are neither for nor against conflict, they will always be part of politics. When it comes, our role is to give each of the persons a fair hearing.”

Ghana has secured a major financial boost for its development aspirations, inking a $2 billion framework arrangement with South Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

The deal, signed on the margins of the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit, will bolster the implementation of Ghana’s key priority programmes spanning infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, energy, roads and transport as well as ICT, over the next five years.

The signing ceremony marks a significant milestone in the two nations’ long-standing bilateral economic partnership. The Minister for Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, signed on behalf of the government while the Foreign Minister for South Korea, Cho Tae-yul signed for the government of South Korea.

“The signing of the 2024-2028 Framework Arrangement represents a renewed commitment to our shared vision of sustainable development and prosperity,” Dr. Amin Adam stated, underscoring the strategic importance of the deal.

Expressing profound gratitude to the Korean government, the minister said, “On behalf of His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the good people of Ghana, I want to express our sincere gratitude to the Korean government and the EDCF for their continued partnership and commitment to our development journey.”

The $2 billion financing facility is poised to catalyse transformative projects across multiple sectors, propelling Ghana’s development ambitions to new heights.

Dr. Amin Adam highlighted the deal’s potential impact, stating, “With the provision of $2 billion from EDCF, we will embark on transformative projects that are set to redefine our nation’s infrastructure landscape. High-speed railways, highways, and sustainable energy systems are on our agenda.”

Furthermore, the framework arrangement will bolster Ghana’s efforts to enhance healthcare facilities, disease prevention, and health and education initiatives. “A healthy population is the bedrock of progress,” the minister emphasised, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving the wellbeing of its citizens.

Education remains a top priority, with plans to expand access to quality learning opportunities, vocational training, and digital literacy programmes. “Our commitment to quality education remains unwavering,” Dr. Amin Adam affirmed.

“We remain committed to ensuring efficient utilisation of the EDCF resources through effective project management to maximise the impact of this investment,” he stated.

Dr. Amin Adam also seized the opportunity to highlight Ghana’s recent economic rebound, driven by prudent policies and robust growth. “Ghana has made notable strides in its macroeconomic landscape, underpinned by resilient and robust growth and substantial progress in key performance indicators,” he said, citing GDP growth exceeding expectations, declining inflation, and improvements in gross international reserves.

On his part, Mr. Cho Tae-yul expressed his happiness about the strong relations that existed between our two countries noting, “The strong relations between the two countries have been underpinned by high level engagements and effective communication between the leadership of the two countries. Ghana losing huge quantities of cocoa to smuggling

0

Ghana, one of the leading producers of cocoa, risks losing out if the smuggling of the commodity is not immediately checked.

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is concerned that if the cartel that is in charge of cocoa smuggling in Ghana keeps up its current behaviour, the situation will get worse.

Fiifi Boafo, Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD maintained that the phenomenon poses a negative impact on the country’s cocoa production.

“If cocoa beans are smuggled across the border, then there will not be any revenue for COCOBOD, and it appears a sizeable amount of Cocoa will be lost to these smuggling activities”, he said on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday.

For many years, cocoa beans have been smuggled illegally between the Ivory Coast and Ghana.

The smuggling of cocoa between Ghana and the Ivory Coast occurs often, with the direction of the trafficking varying according to the price differential between the two countries.

If not stopped in their tracks, smugglers will continue to contribute to Ghana’s crop shortfall.

Aside from that, factors including over-aged trees and climate change have led Ghana to experience a shortage of 300,000 metric tonnes of cocoa in the crop season for 2021–2022.

That is actually the lowest in 15 years.

His concern was expressed given that in just two weeks, the anti-smuggling task force, working with security organizations, has seized more than 1,500 bags of smuggled cocoa beans.

The smuggled beans originated from the Western North and Volta regions while arrests were made in the Greater Accra, Volta and Western North regions during the transit of the cocoa beans.

“We have realized that, now it has gone beyond the border towns, where people in Accra are also smuggling. The challenge now is that we have foreigners engaged in this business now who repackaged it in a way you would not know that the content is cocoa and get it out of town. That is the challenge we have now. The foreigners have given the smugglers a window to be cash in so the farmer is not getting anything.”

He also recognized that one of the contributing factors to the rise in cocoa smuggling into Ghana’s neighbours is the country’s comparatively low cocoa prices.

The country has suffered huge financial losses, and cocoa farmers are now in a desperate predicament.

“It is serious. At the beginning of the year, we have been concerned about the possibility of smuggling. It is quite a common thing to have people cross borders to go sell cocoa. Over the years it’s because we have better prices as compared to our neighbouring countries”, says the Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, Fiifi Boafo.

Highlighting COCOBOD’s plans to deal with the crisis, Fiifi Boafo stated that the Board will step up its efforts.

“We are collaborating with Ivory Coast for better results. Apart from that, we do not have a strong relationship with Togo, so it doesn’t help that much. One of the things we are also doing is that the people who see and report, we give them two-thirds of the value of the cocoa, so it has incentivized people to give us information”.

“Because You Vibe With Someone Doesn’t Mean They’re Your Friends”

0

Famous singer, Simi, has recently posted insightful guidance on social media about the value of maintaining one’s personal space and understanding the true meaning of friendship.

Simi highlighted in her message that not everyone deserves to be called a friend and advised against referring to just anyone as a friend.

Simi made the observation that someone isn’t always a best friend based on casual interactions or sporadic positive vibes. She talked about how people should guard their personal space and choose carefully who they let into their hearts and souls.

She further elaborated that sometimes, when people feel they are investing more in a relationship than the other person, it doesn’t always mean that the other person is a bad friend or doesn’t like them. It might simply be a case of the other person not seeing the relationship in the same way.

Simi stressed the importance of understanding that no one’s life revolves around another person, and it’s okay for feelings and perceptions to differ.

Simi advised her followers to focus on those who reciprocate their feelings and efforts.

Cocaine found in White House sparks brief evacuation

0

A suspicious powder discovered in the West Wing of the White House has been confirmed as cocaine in a preliminary test, two law enforcement officials said.

The White House was briefly evacuated on Sunday evening while President Joe Biden was at Camp David after Secret Service agents discovered the powder.

The agents were doing routine rounds on Sunday when they found the white powder in a West Wing area accessible to tour groups, the officials anonymously told the Associated Press.

The West Wing is attached to the executive mansion where the president lives and includes the Oval Office, cabinet
room and press area, along with offices and workspace for the president’s advisers and staff.

The powder was found in a common area and not in any particular office, the officials said.

The White House was evacuated at about 8.45 pm on Sunday as fire and emergency crews were brought in to do a rapid test.

The Secret Service said the closure was a precaution as emergency crews investigated.

They added the District of Columbia fire department was called in to evaluate and determine that the substance was not hazardous.

The Washington Post has reported that the fire department identified the white powder as being cocaine.

A recording of a dispatch call made at 8.49 pm local time on Sunday reveals a firefighter saying: “We have a yellow bar stating cocaine hydrochloride.”

The White House was soon reopened after it was evacuated and the powder was sent for further testing.

“The item was sent for further evaluation and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending,” the Secret Service said.

Mr Biden and his family left for Camp David on Friday and returned to the White House on Tuesday.

It’s an advice. You did the same to Ahmed Suale, so don’t let it repeat. If you can do something for the party, tell us. It’s just exactly a month to the election. I don’t want you to lose, but put a stop to your utterances and focus on your campaign to win”.

However, in defense of the Assin Central MP, the Ashanti Regional Communication Director of Kennedy Agyapong Campaign Team, William Kusi, said it was extremely regrettable for a regional chairman to lie against their candidate.

According to him, they would battle any attempt by certain party members to destroy their leader’s reputation.
He also accused Wontumi of exploiting Bawumia’s office to solve party matters rather than the regional office, adding that Chairman Wontumi had wasted all the money intended for the party’s building without accounting for it.

He claimed Wontumi’s initial statement on the voter registration exercise was a diabolic purpose created by the latter to discredit their noble presidential candidate.

“Under no circumstance would we allow someone like Wontumi to drag our candidate’s name into the mud. If he is a man, we dare him to arrest Kennedy and see,” Lawyer William Kusi stated.

He explained that Chairman Wontumi had disgraced the NPP party for failing to construct all the roads awarded to him.
However, he urged the Regional chairman to cease the insults and jokes and fix the roads from Nkawie to Bontefufuo in the Amansie West and Wioso to Mpasaaso in the Ahafo Ano South-West in the Ashanti Region.
Kennedy Agyapong last weekend when addressing his followers after the walk in Kumasi said “Chairman Wontumi has taken the party for ransom by deploying rogue tactics to do the bidding of some elements in the NPP”.

Citing a case to buttress his claim, Kennedy Agyapong did not take kindly to the utterances of Chairman Wontumi against the person of the former Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, who has resigned from the party.

He therefore warned the chairman that going forward, he is going to meet his tactics in equal measure.

“I dare Wontumi to make a mistake and he will see men in this country, he will see men in Ghana. You operate a radio and TV station to insult elderly people”.

“I dare Wontumi to come here and deny, he was a full-blooded Alan supporter and I convinced him to switch to the side of President Akufo-Addo. You can support Akufo-Addo or Vice President Bawumia but don’t insult,” Agyapong told the mammoth crowd.

On the attacks on the person of Alan, Agyapong stated: “Alan is being insulted on Wontumi’s station. Wontumi is just a small boy, he is a small boy. It is sad that Wontumi and five chairmen – from four northern regions and the Volta Region – have turned the National Council into a hooliganism group.”

Wontumi Replies

However, Chairman Wontumi reacting to Kennedy Agaypong’s threats during his presser held in Kumasi, expressed serious concerns about the threats and also urged the flagbearer aspirant to focus on his campaign for the upcoming NPP primaries on November 4, instead of attacking him.

“I love NPP, I will never say anything against the party or Kennedy Agyapong. I will always ensure the progress of the party. I will let the police arrest you if you threaten me again with your showdown comments. I’m advising you against such comments, your threats on Ahmed Suale’s life caused his death. I’m not interested in you losing the elections, but please tell delegates what you can do for the party and desist from spewing derogatory comments against party members, and polling station agents. Just try to apologize to them. You have insulted chiefs, judges, and everyone in the country, everybody knows what you can do, change your attitude,” he advised.

Chairman Wontumi also defended his decision to order the removal of Alan Kyerematen’s campaign posters from party offices after Kyerematen resigned from the NPP and his declaration to run as an independent candidate.

He further clarified that this directive was a matter of party discipline and not intended as an insult towards Kyerematen.

NEWS JUST IN: Gvt Launches Crackdown, Declares 1.8M Penalty to All Drivers Found Breaking this Law

0

As cases of trailer overloading continue to rise in the country, the government through the Kenya National Highways Authority has announced stiffer punishment for all drivers found breaking maximum trailer weight laws.

Speaking to the media, Jackson Kamuyu – the operations manager for Danka Africa Limited ( DAL ) that manages the Suswa and Gilgil weighbridges, stated that long distance drivers ferrying goods to neighbouring countries lead in breaking the law.

As KENHA launches a crackdown on rogue drivers and shipping companies, he warned that offenders will be slapped with KES 1,861,500 fine or face a three year jail term.

According to analysis by the Kenya National Highways Authority, drivers operating in Kenya’s Northern corridor are the top breakers of the law. Atleast 500 of 900,000 trailers weighed at the Gilgil weighbridge were found to have loaded above required maximum weight leading to the arrest of drivers.

The Northern corridor refers to multimodal trade routes that link the landlocked countries of the Great Lakes region to the maritime seaport of Mombasa.

Pick Grassroot Man As Running Mate – COKA Tells Bawumia

0

Odeneho Kwaku Appiah

Former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Aspirant, Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA has proposed to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer on the criteria he should consider in selecting his running mate.

In one of his “COKA I CARE” statements on his social media page, the former Afigya Kwabre South Constituency Chairman said that Dr. Bawumia will be better off with a running mate who is popular and well accepted in the society.

According to him, aside from the popularity the said individual must be someone from Ashanti region who has changed the lives of the people around him.

“…The only person you need is someone who is popular and has changed the lives of others to add more votes to yours, nothing more, nothing less,” he said.

The statement was part of an advise he was giving to Dr. Bawumia on his stance when it came to the selection.

He suggested to Vice President Bawumia to be unwavering in his selection saying, the world will criticize him on any candidate he selects.

“Whoever Dr. Bawumia selects as his running mate, Ghanaians will talk about it, being negatively or positively. Even Jesus Christ, was criticized when he was doing good to mankind. His Excellency, Dr. Bawumia, please ask your boss, Nana Akufo-Addo when it was time for him to select his running mate in 2008 if he had listened to some people in and out of NPP, could we have had improved digitalization and many other achievements spearheaded by Dr. Bawumia’s office everywhere in Ghana by now?”

He said candidate Nana Akufo-Addo at the time stood firm “on his grounds” and was not hindered by the comments from other people.

“He stood on his grounds and justified why he wanted Dr. Bawumia to partner him. People will suggest others for their personal interest but you should remember that your running mate is about you.”

“Democracy is about numbers. When you visit social media, market places, churches, funeral grounds and ask whose name they have been hearing for funeral donations and also ask those around you, it will inform you that 99.9% of the people in Ashanti region are behind one grassroot person.

I can boldly tell that with a research data that l am privy to, of the 16 regional ministers, only 2 are uncomfortable with the popular candidate. Of the majority members of Parliaments only 8 are uncomfortable with the person. 16 regional chairmen only 2 are not comfortable and out of the 275 constituency chairmen only 17 are uncomfortable with the preferred choice. Those with eyes will see, those with pen know and those with ears will hear”.

People Are Only Just Discovering What Chainsaws Were Originally Used For |

0

Chainsaws are portable power tools used for cutting down trees… but that wasn’t their intended use.

Users must be incredibly careful, and injuries are not uncommon – with around 28,000 chainsaw-related incidents in the US each year, according to the National Library of Medicine.

The motorised tool was wielded as a weapon by Leatherface in the horror movie classic the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ ‘.

And the original use of the contraption has a similarly shocking backstory after being invented by two Scottish surgeons in 1780.

The first chainsaw was created by John Aitken and James Jeffray and it was actually used to assist childbirth.

Powered by a hand crank with teeth that moved along a chain, the invention was a lot smaller and didn’t look quite as big and scary as the modern equivalent.

The caesarian section wasn’t common in the 18th century because it was deemed too dangerous.

So, when a baby became stuck or breached, doctors had to remove parts of cartilage, flesh and bone to create space – the procedure was called a ‘symphysiotomy’.

Surgeons used to perform the procedure using a knife, however this was a drawn-out and painful operation. Anaesthesia wasn’t invented until 1846

The original chainsaw, later developed into the ‘osteotome,’ allowed surgeons to widen the pubic cartilage and cut away diseased bone.

As this information circulated around social media, users were horrified by the revelation.

One person tweeted: ‘Think medicine cares about women’s pain, either historically or presently? Look up what the chainsaw was initially invented to do. I dare you’.

Others added ‘Do not look up why was the chainsaw invented’ and ‘Be grateful for modern medicine and if you’re not go Google why the chainsaw was invented’.

Another use wrote ‘I don’t think I wanted to know this,’ while someone else added ‘Oh my God that’s medieval!’

Ronaldo chose a tougher challenge than Messi by joining Al-Nassr

0

Al-Nassr player Cristiano Ronaldo and Paris Saint-Germain player Lionel Messi

Ronaldo throughout his career has never shied away from difficult challenges. Unlike Messi that picked Paris Saint-German that is guaranteed to win the league more often than not, the Portuguese superstar, by joining Al-Nassr, has chosen a team that has only won 1 league title in the last six years and three titles in the last two decades.

Saudi Pro League winners in the last six years

Ligue 1 winners in the last 10 years

This shows the Portuguese superstar has not chosen the easy way out as some have said. It’s a tougher challenge for him to help his new team win the league title than it is for Messi at PSG. The Parisians don’t need the Argentine forward to win the league.

It’s been like that for Ronaldo throughout his career. Recall he left a dominant Manchester United side, in 2009, to join a Real Madrid side that was in dire need of a rebuild. Then years later, he continued that trend by leaving Real Madrid to join Juventus after they made history by winning three consecutive Champions League titles. Not many players will be brave enough to do that.

In contrast, Messi has always been in his comfort zone at Barcelona. He only jumped ship to make life easier after it became obvious that the Blaugrana needs a rebuild. Recall that he unsuccessfully tried to force a move out of Barcelona a year before he left. So the club not affording his wages a year later was a painful but simple way out for him.

Asamoah Gyan picks Sulley Muntari over Kevin Prince-Boateng –

0

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has chosen Sulley Muntari over Kevin-Prince Boateng as the better player.

During a ‘this or that’ challenge with 3sports, Gyan was presented with pairs of current and former Black Stars players to choose from.

Initially, he chose Kevin over Derek Boateng in the previous pair, then selected Sulley over Kevin in the next round without hesitation.

Asamoah Gyan played alongside both Kevin and Sulley in the Black Stars. The trio played pivotal roles for Ghana during their historic quarter-final finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Kevin scored in the round of 16 of the tournament, Sulley scored in the quarter-final, and Gyan finished as Ghana’s top scorer with three goals, including a famous match-winner in the round of 16 against the USA.

Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng also played together at AC Milan, contributing to the Rossoneri’s Serie A win in 2013.

Other notable choices Asamoah Gyan made during the challenge included picking Laryea Kingston over Thomas Partey and Derek Boateng over Emmanuel Osei Kuffour.

COCOBOD secures $800 million syndicated loan from international banks –

0

Ghana’s cocoa sector regulator, COCOBOD, has signed an $800 million syndicated loan agreement with international banks to support the 2023/24 crop season for cocoa purchases, Reuters has reported.

According to the portal, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Ray Ankrah, disclosed this on Tuesday December 19, 2023 while indicating the regulator expects a quick drawdown of the funds by the end of this week.

This makes it the most expensive loan for the annual crop season for cocoa purchases at the highest interest on record in decades. International banks pledged to lend the funds at almost 8 percent.

“I joined COCOBOD in 2018 and this is the hardest transaction we have had. It’s been signed and we are working on the drawdown. We’re drawing down $600 million by the end of this week and we expect to draw down the $200 (million) in the middle to the end of January,” Ray Ankrah is quoted to have said by Reuters.

Ankrah also told Reuters that the terms of the loan had not changed from the one presented to Parliament back in November this year after the House gave the nod to COCOBOD to finalize and complete the paperwork of the deal with participating banks.

Under the current terms of the transaction presented to Parliament, COCOBOD will pay an interest of nearly 8%, making it the most expensive loan secured in decades.

The deal includes one-month Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) which is currently around 5.3% and a margin of 2.65%.

Prior to this, the 2023/24 cocoa crop season had suffered delays as COCOBOD could not secure the funds on time due to the ongoing debt restructuring programme.

Ghana is now the second-largest producer of cocoa after Ivory Coast. The two countries account for almost 70 percent of global supplies for cocoa beans.

Five things learnt from Black Stars’ important 2-1 victory over Mali in World Cup qualifiers –

0

A 2-1 victory over the Eagles of Mali has put Ghana’s bid for qualification to the 2026 World Cup firmly on track, with the Black Stars now second in Group I of the qualifiers.

Goals from Ernest Nuamah and Jordan Ayew ensured that Ghana secured their first victory in 2024, earning three points that will have a significant impact on the country’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

Ghana, starting the game slowly, grew into the match and dominated the latter part of the first half, despite being sucker-punched by a Malian lead in the dying embers of the first half. The Stars, with their backs against the wall, managed to score two goals in the second half to get their qualification campaign back on track.

Here are five things we have all learned from the game

Otto Addo got the setup right

Taking over a team that has conceded ten goals in its last five matches, the first task is to devise a strategy to stop the leaking defence.

It made sense, then, that Otto Addo opted for a structure that provided Ghana with proper defensive cover. Defensively, Ghana lined up in a 5-3-2 formation, and in attack, they transitioned to a 3-5-2.

Though the initial stages of the game appeared chaotic, which is understandable, the Black Stars eventually found some rhythm and demonstrated an understanding of the defensive shape.

Ghana still needs an Ayew

There is an unwritten belief that football has gods who sometimes manipulate events in the spiritual realm to manifest beautifully on the pitch.

Jordan Ayew, starting from the bench and coming on to score an important goal, is an event that football fans would agree was scripted by the football gods.

In a period where the Ayew family has once again dominated headlines, Jordan Ayew proved why the nation still needs someone from the family with an extremely important winner.

3-back system could unlock Tariq Lamptey

Tariq Lamptey delivered his best performance in a Ghana jersey in a game where he was deployed as a right-wing-back.

Lamptey’s contributions to both attack and defence were significant, and he was outstanding. He ended the game as one of Ghana’s best players on the day.

Why is Kudus struggling?

Mohammed Kudus, the star man of the team, has more than justified the tag, but against Mali, the forward struggled.

Kudus’ struggle in the match could be attributed to several factors, including pressure, positioning, and the setup by Otto Addo.

The West Ham forward could not impact the game, and Ghanaians will be hoping that against the Central African Republic on Monday, he will rediscover his form and impress for Ghana.

Ati-Zigi has arrived

Despite his constant presence in the national team, there used to be doubts about the competence of Ati-Zigi, but those doubts will certainly be put to rest by his performance against Mali on Thursday.

Two fantastic saves in the opening minutes of the first half ensured that Ghana survived an early onslaught by Mali.

He had a good game, and this performance will certainly boost his confidence as Ghana’s number-one goalkeeper.

National Insurance Commission, MTTD crack down on fake, uninsured vehicles in Western Region –

0

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) and the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) Unit of the Ghana Police Service has conducted an operation to clamp down on drivers with fake motor insurance stickers or no motor insurance.

The exercise took place at Axim, Agona Nkwanta, Esiama and Tikobo all in the Western Region.

During the exercise, over 500 vehicles were inspected. Some vehicles were found with fake motor insurance stickers or had no insurance.

Additionally, some vehicles were flagged for other road traffic issues. An Insurance agent at the Takoradi DVLA office has been charged for issuing fake sticker and would be sent to court.

Justice Peprah Agyei, Western Regional Manager of the National Insurance Commission, speaking to the B&FT, emphasized the prevalence of uninsured vehicles on the roads.

“Some people still drive without any insurance for their vehicles,” he noted. “Others use fake motor insurance stickers. Countless individuals have fallen victim to motor crashes involving fake or uninsured vehicles”.

He highlighted the widespread impact of this issue, stating, “Every family in Ghana may have experienced the impact of motor accident”. People have lost parents, children, siblings, and other relatives in motor crashes. Where will these people receive compensation from?”

Mr. Agyei explained the importance of motor third-party insurance, which covers the legal liability of the insured or driver for accidents caused by their vehicle.

“The third-party policy covers death or bodily injury to any person, damage to property belonging to someone other than the insured, and injuries or death of members of the insured’s household or other occupants. It also provides compensation to the driver for bodily injury or death.”

The Axim Divisional Commander, ACP Isaac Sorkpah, who has been providing continous support for the National Insurance Commission assured the public that the MTTD is committed to enforcing the law to protect lives and properties.

“We are always ready to help and collaborate with the National Insurance Commission and the National Road Safety Authority on their activities and mandate,” he affirmed.

Disregard purported increase in transport fares

0

The Ministry of Transport has asked the public to disregard the purported 30 percent increase in transport fares by the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana from January 22.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 17, it said, “There has not been any negotiation with the transport operators for a review of the transport fares. We therefore urge the general public to disregard the purported increase.”

“When it becomes necessary for such negotiations and the decisions are taken, the general public will be appropriately informed, as has been done in the past.”

The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, in a press release, stated that the said increment in fares was a result of a “substantial rise in the costs of lubricants and spare parts, coupled with increment on DVLA service charges” which it indicated is having a significant impact on the livelihoods of its members.

The transport operators also lamented the high cost of maintenance and repairs.

“The proposal for a fare increase aims to address the drivers’ financial challenges and ensure the sustainability of the public transportation industry in Ghana,” the commercial transport operators added in the press release.

Asawase constituents divided over remo of NDC parliamentary leadership

0

The change in National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) leadership in parliament continues to dominate discussions in the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

The constituents are divided over the development.

Some expect the removed Members of Parliament to accept the decision of the party hierarchy, but others remain aggrieved and want the decision rescinded.

Some displeased members of the NDC in the Asawase constituency on Wednesday marched to the party office in the Ashanti Region to express their displeasure against the party leadership.

They burnt car tyres to demonstrate their anger in the remo of their Member of Parliament, Muntaka Mubarak, as the Minority Chief Whip in Parliament.

A member of the party, Yakubu Issah, wants the party  executives to rescind their decision.

“We are hearing some party executives want Muntaka Mubarak to lose his seat but we will protect it with our blood,” he alleged.

The deployment of security personnel forestalled the destruction of property.

Calm has been restored at the regional party office after Wednesday’s protest against the remo of the MP from the Minority leadership in parliament.

Debris from their action has been cleared.

Some concerned constituents, led by Harris Umar, are pleased with the swift response of the regional police command at the party office.

The group wants the changed MPs to accept the party’s decision.

“We Northerners have had our fair share, it is time for other tribes and region, National Executives’ decision was in the best interest of the party and we must accord it with all the respect it deserves,” he added.

What Happened After Doctors Realized The Baby In A Woman’s Belly Has No Head – Dr Olukoya

0

Dr Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of Mountain Of Fire And Miracle Ministries sends an important message to the public on the miracle power of God in a recent video shared on his official Facebook page.

He gave a testimony of what happened after doctors realized that that baby in a woman’s belly has no head. “There was a woman seeking for the fruit of the womb but her husband was a diplomat abroad. She now got pregnant and the first time she would go for a scan, it was in an Asian country. The person taking the scan ran out and called others. They were all confused and were running up and down.”

“Then they brought the medical director of the husband and he also came, looking confused. She then asked him, “Excuse me, Why all this confusion, why is everyone running helter skelter?” The chief medical officer said, “Madam, We have never seen this before, according to this scan, this baby has no head. She broke down and started to cry. The doctor then said that they have to evacuate this baby immediately but she disagreed and said she wants to go home to her husband and promised to come back the next day.”

“She got home, told her husband and they started calling my phone. They got me on the phone and told me. Then I asked for a bottle of water, prayed and told her to drink and return to the hospital. She got back to the hospital and they decided to do the scanning. They started and the same thing happened. Everyone was looking confused, running helter skelter. Then they brought the medical director again and she asked him again, “What is happening?” HHe said, “Madam, we don’t know what is happening but this baby now has a head.”

He then prayed, “I am praying for you that the miracle power of God will arise for you in the name of Jesus.”

Fuel shortage, faulty thermal plants causing ‘dumsor’ – John Jinapor –

0

Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu constituency, John Jinapor, has attributed the current power cuts in the country, popularly known as ‘dumsor’, to fuel shortages and the inefficiency of thermal power plants.

Accra and some parts of the country have experienced intermittent power outages for a significant period of time. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has not provided much explanation regarding the recent outages.

Mr Jinapor has urged the authorities responsible for the power sector to release a schedule for power outages so that Ghanaians can plan accordingly.

“The minority side has been monitoring the power situation for the past month, and it appears, based on the information available to us, that the power sector is collapsing.

“Since February 2, there has been persistent and consistent load shedding by the generation companies; indeed, the load shedding is worsening by the day. The day the president was delivering SONA and boasting, there was some load-shedding happening,” Mr Jinapor said in an interview.

“Today at 12 pm, load shedding will commence again; our investigation indicates that some of our thermal plants are down, and there is a lack of fuel causing the load shedding. The handlers of the power sector should do the honourable thing by informing the people of Ghana so they can plan ahead of time.”

Deputy Energy Minister-designate Collins Adomako-Mensah has promised that the current power outages will be resolved within the next two weeks.

“I admit that for the past two or three weeks, there have been some power outages, but it is interesting that the two-week power outages are causing the Minority to have a press conference. I am yet to fully settle into the [Energy] Ministry, but the little interaction I have had with the officers in the Ministry before my vetting is that this should be taken care of in the next two weeks,” Collins Adomako-Mensah said in the interview.

Companies Urged To Support Nungua Homowo

Nii Okplen Dzalesane II speaking at a function at Nungua

Companies operating within the jurisdiction of the Nungua Stool in the Greater Accra Region have been urged to support this year’s Homowo festival of the chiefs and people of Nungua.

The annual Homowo festival is celebrated by Ga indigenes to hoot at hunger and to thank the Almighty God for bountiful food harvest.

The Nungua Oblantai Mantse and chairman of the 22-member Festival Committee, Nii Okplen Dzalesane II, speaking at a recent media interaction,  praised companies functioning on Nungua lands for their support in the past.

He asked them to rise to the occasion again this year in cash or in kind for a successful celebration.

He added that some unscrupulous persons sometimes take advantage of the season and go making demands on various companies, claiming they had been authorised by the Nungua Stool to do so.

The Nungua Oblantai Mantse advised companies to always verify the eligibility of anyone who approaches them for support for Nungua Homowo and instantly report fraudsters to the police for arrest and prosecution.

He pointed out that the festival is neither for the committee members nor the people of Nungua alone, but for everyone connected to Nungua in different ways.

He therefore asked the churches, security agencies, corporate bodies and other outfits that have dealings with Nungua to fully cooperate for a peaceful celebration.

Nii Okplen Dzalesane II took advantage of the occasion to educate folks who claim that the people of Nungua only celebrate Kpledjoo and not Homowo.

He clarified the point that the entire Gadangbe people celebrate Homowo but individual towns and jurisdictions have their own way of going about it.

“For instance, there’s Yeeyeeye in Ga Mashi; there’s Odwira in Osu, there’s Amrakui Akpa at La; there’s Kpashimo and Sesebumo at Teshie; there’s Obeneshimo and Kpledjoo at Nungua and there’s Kpledjoo and Kpa also at Tema. So that’s how it is but the entire Gadangbe people celebrate Homowo. We came from somewhere. We came with hunger.  So after the hunger, we hooted at it. That’s the essence of Homowo for all of us Gadangbes,” he added.

Health Minister excused by Parliament over vaccine shortage

0

Parliament has excused the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, over the steps being taken to address the shortage of childhood vaccines in the country.

He had been scheduled by the Business Committee of the house to address the House on the shortage of Vaccines.

Several parts of the country have been hit with a shortage of vaccines in the last few months despite claims by the National Health Insurance Authority that over GH¢70 million has been released for the procurement of the vaccines.

The concerning situation piqued the interest of the Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, Nana Ayew Afriyie, who sees the need to call the Minister of Health and other agency heads to an emergency meeting on Tuesday, February 28.

The Health Minister who was scheduled to appear in the House on February 28, 2023, failed to show up, thus courting the wrath of the Minority.

Meanwhile, the Paediatric Society of Ghana has revealed that over 500 cases of measles have so far been recorded in the country due to the unavailability of essential vaccines.

Dr Hilda Boye, the newly elected President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana said the situation is quite worrying because the delay in the arri of the vaccines can potentially escalate the disease.

“As we speak, we are looking at about 500 suspected cases of measles. So we are worried because we are just sitting and watching, and it is getting worse by the day and that is expected also because it is an infectious disease, and we really shouldn’t have come to this place in the first place.

“We know how bad these illnesses are, and we know that there is a solution and everybody had to sit up so that we don’t get to this point,” Dr Boye said on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, March 7.

APC: “Without sounding immodest, since they took over, things are now worse” –Julius Abure

0

According to a report by the Independent Newspaper on August 28, 2023, Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has communicated to party supporters in the United States of America that Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the February 25 elections, is anticipated to be declared the President of Nigeria. This expectation precedes the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Since the conclusion of the election, the PEPT has been engaged in deliberations regarding the arguments presented by Peter Obi and the Labour Party. They are challenging the victory declaration of Bola Tinubu, the frontrunner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the election and the legitimate president of Nigeria.

Julius Abure, while on a tour of the United Kingdom and United States to motivate party members and supporters, expressed strong confidence in Peter Obi’s candidacy. Abure highlighted that the participation of the Labour Party and Peter Obi in the 2023 general election has reshaped the political discourse in Nigeria. He emphasized their determination to challenge any perceived irregularities in the electoral process.

Abure’s statement reveals the competitive spirit of the Labour Party in the election. He conveyed that they posed a strong challenge to their opponents, indicating that their efforts have disrupted the status quo and instigated change.

Abure further stated: “Without sounding immodest, since they took over, things are now worse. The only party and the only candidate that has solutions to the challenges of the country is the Labour Party and Peter Obi.”

“We gave them a run for their money. They have murdered sleep and they will sleep no more. They have stolen what is not for them and they will not sleep until we recover it all.”

The PEPT is expected to deliver its judgment on or before September 16, 2023. Abure remains steadfast in his belief that Peter Obi will ultimately be declared the President of Nigeria. He encouraged supporters to maintain their optimism, resist discouragement, and uphold hope for positive transformation in the country.

Belgian New Force Girl Faces Deportation

0

Shalimar Abbiusi

The Spokesperson for a new political group calling itself The New Force’, Shalimar Abbiusi, is on the verge of being deported from Ghana for allegedly obtaining a permit through fraud.

The young woman was rearrested yesterday by officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) just moments after she was discharged by a Kaneshie Magistrate Court.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that her permit had been revoked by the GIS although her counsel, Francis Xavier Sosu said he had not seen a copy of the said revocation letter, neither was the court shown a copy.

The Belgian was before the court for using a forged document in securing a permit to stay in Ghana by falsely claiming to be a student of Ghana Christian University College.

Assistant Commissioner of Immigration, Adolf Aboagye, yesterday told the court that he had instruction to withdraw the case “and come back at the appropriate time.”

Her counsel, Francis Xavier Sosu, said while they believe the prosecution had the power to withdraw the case, it would be appropriate for the court to order the release of the suspect’s iPhone 13 mobile phone to her.

He said the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) had confirmed that there was nothing incriminating on the phone, hence he urged the court to order for its release as it is a personal property of the lady.

Mr. Sosu also indicated that he was not ignorant of the steps being taken by the state to deport Ms. Abbiusi, but they will have a look at her documents and advice her to regularise her visa if need be.

Mr. Aboagye, on the other hand, indicated that once the suspect was discharged, all the items that were seized from her would be returned to her, but stressed that the said mobile phone was not in the custody of the GIS but the NIB.

“It is about credibility. If you are given a permit that you are a student of a school which you are not and you accept, your credibility is at stake,” the prosecutor added.

Her Worship Nana Abena Owusu Amenyo, the Magistrate, struck out the case as withdrawn and ordered the NIB to release the mobile phone to the lady.

Ms. Abbiusi was, however, rearrested and escorted into a van which was waiting to take her to the Immigration Headquarters.

Her mother, who escorted her to the court, was seen weeping as she and the husband were denied entry into the van that carried their daughter away.

The Belgian, who was acting as the spokesperson for the new political group, was granted GH¢20,000 bail with two sureties by a Kaneshie District Court last week.

She was arrested by officers of the Ghana Immigration Service a fortnight ago for allegedly obtaining a student permit by false declaration in order to stay in Ghana.

She was initially remanded by the court when she made her first appearance before it, after the court gave the GIS some time to conclude its investigations.

Ms. Abbiusi was before the court for one count of obtaining a student permit by false declaration contrary to Section 52(1)(i) of the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), to which she pleaded not guilty.

Prosecution’s Case

The prosecution’s fact before the court state that the GIS’s attention was drawn to the activities of the accused on social media, and was arrested after she was invited by the Head of the National Enforcement Section at the GIS headquarters concerning her immigration status in the country.

The facts indicate that the accused was found in some short video in circulation introducing the emergence of a new political group described as The New Force’, and introduced herself as a spokesperson for the group.

It said investigations revealed that the accused person first came to Ghana on September 4, 2017, through the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and had since been a regular visitor to the country until 2018 when she became a resident following her supposed admission as a student of the Ghana Christian University College.

Court documents indicate that checks from the college revealed that she had never been a student there, and documents purportedly issued by the college to support her application for a residence permit were allegedly forged.

It was gathered that the ram was stolen during a heavy downpour in the area on the eve of the Ed-el-Kabir.

Narrating the incident to the public on Sunday, a cleric in the community, Malam Haruna Yaqub, led this out during the sermon, shortly after the two Raka’at prayers, described it as insensitive.

Yaqub urged the people never to engage in either stealing or any act of criminality, emphasizing that everyone will account for their actions in the here and hereafter.

He said: “The Ram of our Chief Imam, which he purposely bought to sacrifice, has stolen in the night.

“We are really shocked by the incident. We were surprised to hear this story. This means that people are not God fearing.

“It is scaring that people have gone to the extent of stealing ram meant for religious activity.

The cleric urged the people to fear God and stay away from theft or any criminal behaviour, stressing that everyone will answer for their deeds in this life and the next.

He said: “It is high time people repented and took the path of Allah. It is not too late. People should stop committing bad things and act according to Allah’s commandments.”

The accident happened when he was returning to Kumasi following their matchday 30 fixture against Tamale City in the ongoing 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.

Cocoa bills debt exchange an indication govt can’t pay its debts

0

The Director of Business Operations at Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, says COCOBOD’s invitation to holders of its short-term debt securities (cocoa bills) to exchange that for longer-term debt securities is simply an indication of the government’s inability to pay its debt.

The financial analyst says the invitation is simply an extension of the recent domestic debt exchange programme the government undertook.

Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mr. Jackson indicated that per the proposals of the Ghana Cocoa Board, the cocoa bills that were expected to mature in August will not be paid but extended to 2024.

“Just like we did with domestic bonds, the government and COCOBOD have come up to say, we can’t pay our bills. Remember that the last Cocoa Bill was issued in February 2023 at a rate of 32.22 percent per annum and this was supposed to have been paid in August, but it will not be paid and any interest and the principal will be rolled up into one figure.”

He also explained that payment of the interest on those bills will be spread over five years to provide a brief relief for the government.

“Let’s say you have Cocoa Bills worth GH¢68 and interest worth about GH¢32 which adds up to GH¢100, 5 percent of that will be paid in 2024, 20 percent in 2025, 25 percent in 2026, 25 percent in 2027, and 25 percent in 2028 which means that the monies that you should have received this year plus interest, will be spread over the five years starting in 2024. This is another haircut.”

He further slammed COCOBOD for derailing from its original mandate thereby being unable to pay its debts.

“This is truly a COCOBOD problem. COCOBOD has badly managed its affairs, and it hasn’t even published its accounts since 2020, and it is the one that took the money supposedly to purchase cocoa but unfortunately doing other things that are not in its original remit.”

My childhood trauma made me a people pleaser – Nancy Isime spills

Kemi Filani recalls that Nancy Isime had opened up about her childhood experiences.

The ‘Nancy Isime show’ host revealed that the trauma she passed through as a child made her a men pleaser.

While speaking in an interview with actress cum host Lilian Afegbai, she revealed that her inability to get the attention she required as a child made her a people pleaser.

While growing up, she wanted people to like her.

However, Nancy Isime had dropped the childish attitude as she has gotten to a point where she doesn’t force herself on anybody or need their validation.

She said, “I don’t force myself on anybody. I used to be a people pleaser but that came from childhood trauma. It came from a childhood trauma where you’ll be looking for attention as a child and you didn’t get it. When you get older, you start waning people to like you. So even if it’s breaking you, even if you know that this person doesn’t like you and has said shit about you, you think maybe they can change their minds”.

Speaking on how she overcame it, she alluded to self-love for helping her out.

“But learning to love myself and being intuitive helped me to heal from being a people pleaser”.

Is That The Right Priority?

0

Former National Vice Chairman, North-West, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Salihu Lukman, queried Federal Government over Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.

INFORMATION NIGERIA learnt that the construction of the road is expected to consume at least N15 trillion.

Lukman challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led administration over what he described as poor management of fund.

The APC chieftain, during an interview session on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, yesterday, opined that FG should have prioritize better sector, like Education and security, including other pressing issues facing the country.

He said: “Now we poorly manage it, the problem of corruption now under Asiwaju (President Bola Tinubu). So far it has been suspended because the minister (Betta Edu of the Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development) is suspended and almost everything appears to be suspended with respect to social investment.

“But when you look at some of the key decisions taken by this government, one of which is the Lagos Calabar coastal highway – you look at the amount of money, we are talking of N15 trillion, that is going to go – you ask yourself, given the challenges facing this country, is that the right priority?

“Imagine you invest N15 trillion in equipping our armed forces and trying to recover all the ungoverned spaces in the country. Imagine you invest that in terms of providing classroom blocks and recruiting teachers.”

Speaking further, Lukman charged Tinubu to prioritize young children that are out of school.

He added: “You know, now we talk about this statistic of 10 million out-of-school children but we do nothing,” the APC chieftain said on the current affairs show.

“If, for instance, we are now going to mop up the state of some of these classes, you check online, you see certainly there is anything but class classroom.

“In many of our schools, you see a school with more than 500 pupils with only one teacher.”

I’m Ghana’s Hope – Duffuor

0

Dr. Kwabena Duffuor handing over the nomination forms to NDC General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey

Former Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor says he is Ghanaians’ hope as the one with the magic wand to transform the country’s economy and make things better.

Speaking to reporters after submitting his nomination forms and other electoral documents to run for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer position on May 13, 2023, he stated that the next NDC government led by him would restore hope and national pride.

The former Governor of the Bank of Ghana will come face-to-face with former President John Dramani Mahama and two others for the flagbearership contest.

He thanked the throngs of NDC supporters who flocked the party’s headquarters to show their loyalty to him.

“l thank all of you the members and supporters of the NDC family who travelled from far and near in Accra to join me in this exercise. I am very grateful to all of you,” he stressed.

“For the past month, I have been telling the grassroots members of the NDC that the power belongs to you,” he said, adding that the time had come for them to exercise their power and vote for change in their lives.

“My brother and sisters, we know what are going on in this country. We know that you are going through sufferings and hardships. There are no jobs for the teeming youth and people in the country, you don’t have jobs to do, that is why the NDC is coming back to save the lives of the people,” Dr. Duffuor asserted.

According to him, the NDC, led by late President Atta Mills, was able to transform Ghana, and he had come to continue that good work.

He predicted that the NDC would return in 2025 and urged citizens not to travel abroad in search of greener pastures, claiming that there would be enough jobs for everyone.

“Let us get together to win the election in 2024 and rebuild Ghana,” the presidential candidate said, calling for peace and unity within the NDC.

The economist insisted that there is still hope for Ghana because there are clear indications that the NDC will win power, adding that the party is capable of running the country and generating revenue internally.

Dr. Duffuor stated that young men and women working for the NDC in various constituency offices would be given allowances if the NDC wins the 2024 general election.

He also assured NDC cadres that the party would come to power and create pension schemes for them, adding that they would be adequately rewarded when the NDC comes to power in 2025.

Shock as name on passport of Ghanaian Lady travelling to Canada changes at KIA –

A Ghanaian Lady travelling to Canada over the weekend could not board her scheduled flight as her identity “changed” during routine immigration checks at the Kotoka International Airport, MyNewsGh.com has filed.

The traveller whose first name on Passport was given as Abigail showed up at the Kotoka International Airport Terminal Three travelling to Canada.

MyNewsGh.com has redacted details of the surnames to allow for ongoing investigations.

When asked by officials what her name was, the suspect traveller said she was “Ayishetu…” which is not the name on her passport, as her passport said she was called Abigail.

Upon checks of her documents by Immigration and National Security officials at the Airport, it was discovered the Canadia visa appeared to have been tempered with.

Sources told MyNewsGh.com the lady traveller forgot her new identity of Abigail but rather said she was Ayishetu before realizing she made a mistake.

She later reportedly explain to officials she had legally changed her from Ayishetu to Abigail before embarking on the trip hence her forgetfulness.

Checks from the Embassy of Canada in Ghana showed the visa was issued originally to the said Abigail with the corresponding passport Number all genuine.

However, the image of Abigail on the passport was swapped for Ayishetu to enable her travel to Canada.

Ayishetu has been detained and assisting investigations.

Canada has said it is experiencing a surge of asylum claims at domestic airports.

From January through September 2023, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) processed 26,585 asylum claims at airports, representing a 54 per cent increase from 2022’s total of 17,165.

Did NPP plagiarize 2024 budget from NDC? – Bawumia’s aide slammed over akpeteshie tax post –

0

Krobea Kwabena Asante, an aide to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has come under stern critique online for comments about the apketeshie tax contained in the 2024 budget statement.

In a social media post, Krobea intimated that the said tax was first introduced under the erstwhile government of John Dramani Mahama.

He captioned his post which was accompanied with a supposed page from the 2014 budget: “The Akpeteshie tax was actually introduced by the NDC in 2014. The new additions to the excise duty law are cider beer, the vehicle emissions and changes in the rate applicable to some existing lines.”

Despite the accompanying budget page, commenters were not happy with his reference to the NDC having first introduced the said tax.

Some critics said it was unbecoming of the government to drag the NDC into decisions being taken by the government while others wondered if the 2024 budget was inspired by the 2014 budget.

Attention was drawn to the akpeteshie tax by Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, during an analysis of the budget as presented to parliament in November.

Below are some of the reactions:

Kojo @Kojo_870: “u ppl no get sense koraaa oh. NDC is in opposition and they’re there for some of these reasons.

U come and fuul and when u r told u say they also did it. Nyansa foo b3n no no..
Concert party

inou @inou88219842: “Shame on you people for posting this. If NDC did this you will repeat it on Ghanaians right? You Npp told Ghanaians you will take Ghana from taxation to production? Furthermore you intentionally introduced E-levy as saviors tax ( Agyinkor tax ) How useless can npp become

Atongo Frafra, @Atongo4gh: “So are you people actually not tired of printing these documents?

Edmund Adombire @EdmundAdombire:” “Please, one may ask, is it that, which matters now? This idea of previous taxation of references is a thing of the past, so let’s focus on what is currently misdirecting our economy.

Jude @emjay4short: “Does it mean the 2024 tax act was plagiarized from the NDC?
Would you agree it was a mistake then to have voted out the NDC cos they had better foresight

Otoo-M @sogbodjor: “Hi villager, I hope you are satisfied by the sensible response from the masses.

God is Good all the time @esmond_mbii: “The very reason NDC was voted out. So why repeat the mistakes of NDC if you are competent

ttysoon, @tt_Godswillling: “It seems the big guys are having fun with chess while they leave u without game plan.
it not the masses again but ur political interests.government comparing itself with opposition. intention to be rich over night important to NPP dan Corruption, Taxes, Nepotism, Overspending

Dr. Selby, @DrSelby_L: “NDC introduced it, so it’s ok if you also keep it. If you think it’s not helpful cancel it.

THE FUTURE PRESIDENT, @Newton_Ogah: “And you think this was a smart move to take. Krobea Kwabena Asante. You once work at Right FM ????, I expect you to read and have an insightful discussion before bringing this out.

What Ato Forson said about akpeteshie tax and others

On his X page on December 3, 2023, he wrote “Fellow Ghanaians, this government indeed has an insatiable appetite for taxes. The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government is imposing 20% tax on ‘akpeteshie’ (they have run out of ideas).”

He explained that petrol and diesel vehicle owners should also expect to pay a new annual tax of GH¢100 per vehicle on all petrol and diesel cars (internal combustion engine vehicles).

“This tax will be imposed on all trotros, aboboyaas, okadas, taxis, commercial buses, trucks, ambulances, construction and heavy-duty vehicles, water tankers, private cars, etc. Once your vehicle is powered by petrol or diesel, the government is imposing this tax on you,” he added.

Ato Forson said: “According to the government, this policy is aimed at promoting the use of cleaner/more eco-friendly sources of energy (like electric vehicles). Companies will also pay GH¢100 per tonne of carbon dioxide emission.”

The Minority concluded by saying that this is according to a tax bill submitted by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia.

He had earlier noted that the minority will not agree to the approval of the 2024 budget in its current state as this will exacerbate the plight of Ghanaians.

The Four Health Measurements That Everyone Should Know | Health

0

Calories, step count and waist size — there’s no shortage of things that can be measured to determine how fit a person is.

But just four are key to knowing whether you’re healthy in middle age, doctors say.

Keeping blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI and cholesterol in check can be the difference between keeping well or suffering from diabetes, hypertension or a heart attack.

And it is even more important to keep these ‘building blocks’ of cardiovascular health just right when you reach 40.

Here, London-based GP Dr Ann Nainan shares how to keep on top of these health measurements and why they are so important.

Blood pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can be a silent killer.

In most cases, it’s unclear what causes it — though being overweight, eating too much salt and not exercising enough are known risk factors.

As it puts extra strain on organs including the blood vessels, heart and brain, it can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and dementia.

The condition, which affects around one in four adults in the UK, does not usually trigger symptoms. However, those with a very high reading may suffer headaches, blurred or double vision, regular nosebleeds or shortness of breath.

A blood pressure test is the only way to get a reading. Those aged 40 to 74 in England are offered a blood pressure check every five years on the NHS.

‘If your blood pressure is high, you might not have any symptoms, so it is worth going for your annual checks with your GP,’ says Dr Nainan.

‘But if it is very high, in rare cases you could have headaches, vomiting and dizziness. You can also suffer vision changes when it becomes very high.’

Having low blood pressure is not usually a problem, but it can cause fainting and dizziness in some cases.

Dr Nainan added: ‘When your cardiovascular health is poor, things like stroke and a heart attack are more likely along with an overall less healthy life.

‘If you are dizzy and confused and you have got vision changes you are also not going to be able to do your daily living.

‘As you get older looking after your heart health makes a big difference to things like blood pressure, as you age it becomes more important to look after it because you are more likely to get raised blood pressure.’

How is it measured?

Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

The result is given as two numbers, systolic and diastolic.

Systolic refers to the pressure when the heart pushes blood out and around the body. It is the highest number on a reading.

Diastolic is the pressure when the heart rests between beats and blood is pushed around the heart. This measurement is the lower figure.

A normal blood pressure reading is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.

If it is 135/85mmHg or higher it is considered to be high and below 89/59mmHg is low blood pressure.

How do you fix it?

Simple lifestyle changes can help reduce blood pressure.

The NHS recommends cutting back on salt, losing weight if you’re overweight, exercising regularly, drinking less caffeine and not smoking.

Dr Nainan advises high blood pressure patients to prioritise sleep, eating healthily, drinking plenty of water, going for walks and resting to reduce stress.

She added: ‘It is not just your blood pressure that dictates your heart health, it is your age, sugar, your cholesterol and your BMI. These are the building blocks of your cardiovascular health.’

Blood sugar

High blood sugar levels could be an indicator of type 2 diabetes.

Feeling very thirsty, peeing a lot, tiredness and blurred vision are all tell-tale signs of the condition, which affects 4.3million Brits.

It occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells do not react properly to the hormone.

A simple blood test that checks glucose levels is used to sport pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

However, only those with type 2 diabetes symptoms need a blood test to check their levels.

Dr Nainan said: ‘You wouldn’t normally need a sugar level check unless your GP has requested for it.’

How is it measured?

There are several tests that can check blood sugar levels, both at home or by a GP.

Glucose blood test shows your current blood sugar level at, which can change throughout the day. This is just done with a finger prick test.

‘The finger prick test just shows your blood sugar level at that moment in time. So, we don’t use it usually for diabetes diagnosis, we use it just as a clue towards that’, says Dr Nainan.

But the more accurate test is the Hba1C blood test which can calculate the average blood glucose over three months.

A normal Hba1C test is considered to be below 42.

Anything between 42 and 47 indicates hyperglycaemia or pre-diabetes, if it is over 48 it could mean you have diabetes.

How do you fix it?

A healthy diet is the key to managing blood sugar levels.

The NHS tells type 2 diabetes patients to keep sugar, fat and salt to a minimum.

It also suggests exercising, lowering stress levels and losing weight if you are overweight.

Dr Nainan said: ‘Getting enough sleep, eating healthily, drinking lots of water and reducing stress can help lower blood sugar levels. But change in diet is one of the primary factors of type 2 diabetes.’

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that can build up in the blood.

It is mainly caused by eating too much fatty food, not exercising enough, being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol, though it can also run in families.

When levels are too high, the waxy substance can block your blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart problems or a stroke.

However, without a test it can be hard to spot.

Dr Nainan said: ‘Most of the time you do not get any symptoms with high cholesterol. But if you have very high levels of cholesterol and it runs in your family you could have colour changes in the eyes and the skin particularly on the face.’

In rare cases, it can trigger white rings around the cornea — the clear outer layer at the front of the eye — or a yellow or orange growth on skin, usually under the eyes.

How is it measured?

A blood test can normally show your cholesterol levels and some doctors may ask you to fast beforehand to get an accurate reading.

‘When we look at cholesterol, we look at several components. Your total cholesterol, which is the amount of good and bad cholesterol you have, we look at the good cholesterol which is the HDL and we look at your LDL, good cholesterol’, says Dr Nainan.

She added: ‘If you have high total raised cholesterol, but you have a lot of good cholesterol in your system then we would be less concerned.

‘We might produce a ratio on how much good cholesterol you have verse bad.

‘A lot of athletes for example have high cholesterol, but a lot of it is good cholesterol.’

Total cholesterol should be 5mmoI/L or below, while the total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio should be below six.

HDL, which is good cholesterol, should be 1mmoI/L or above for men and slightly higher at 1.2mmoI/L or above for women.

Bad cholesterol, known as non-HDL, should be 4mmoI/L or below.

How do you fix it?

A change in diet and medication can help bring cholesterol to a healthy level, says Dr Nainan.

However, if it runs in a family, it can be difficult to lower cholesterol.

But eating more healthily, exercising and reducing stress will help for most. Some patients are prescribed medication to lower it.

Cutting down on fatty processed foods — such as sausages, cheese, cakes and biscuits — and eating more nuts and oily fish are recommended.

BMI

Obesity has a knock-on effect to your health.

‘Being overweight can have an effect on your quality of life, your cardiovascular risk, risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and even some types of cancer such as bowel, thyroid and breast cancer’, says Dr Nainan.

Weighing too much can also cause an increase in sex and growth hormones and inflammation, which has been linked 13 types of cancer, says Cancer Research UK.

In the UK, around one in four adults are estimated to be obese, according to the NHS.

How is it measured?

BMI is the most widely used method to check if you’re a healthy weight.

It is measured by taking your height and your weight.

But many experts highlight that this method does have its limitations, as it measures whether a person is carrying too much weight but not too much fat.

Dr Nainan said: ‘For BMI, we would need to consider age, ethnicity and gender. It is not for everyone; it is more of a rough estimate to give us clues of where to look. It could just be an indicator.

The NHS says a BMI of 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 and above is obese.

How do you fix it?

The best way to lower your BMI if you are overweight is to eat a healthy reduced-calorie diet and exercise regularly.

‘When you are trying to lose weight or gain weight always try to make small steps as opposed to large diet changes’, says Dr Nainan.

She added: ‘Just start small and build on small regular habits. Drastic overnight changes can be very hard to stick to long-term.’

Akufo-Addo’s colleague opens up about their working relationship

0

A colleague of President Nana Akufo-Addo, Yaw Nsarkoh, has opened up about his working relationship with Him.

To him, the recent economic challenges among other problems facing Ghana during Akufo-Addo’s tenure are shocking.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, he admitted he was surprised at the outcome of Akufo Addo’s government, who he once knew as a ‘diligent’ and ‘magical’ colleague.

“How I used to know him, how he used to do certain things now looking at him as president, it’s not the same. Most of us his colleagues attest to the fact that he is not who we used to know. And we do not say this to shame him or say that things are not going on well.

“Looking at the current state of the country with inflation at 54%, an unstable cedi, those who indulge in open defecation at 18-20%, persons living in kiosks and containers 20%, galamsey has taken over our country. I’m not the only one saying things are not going on well, everyone is aware and because we used to know the man [president], it’s hard to believe that all these things are happening during his tenure,” he said.

He appealed to the entire citizenry to help provide measures to help Ghana, cautioning that complaining will not solve any problems.

“One problem we have in Ghana is that we do not know the way forward with the government, opposition or civil society. The country in itself has no time to decide the way forward and the measures to put in place to progress. A lot of countries are ahead of us. We are always doing a lot of programs yet they do not provide the needed results.’’

He continued that “This country is for us and other generations to come so we must stop the politics and whoever can help must come on board so things can get better. If we sit down and complain without doing anything, things will get out of hand.”

He suggested that systems not only political need to be changed for national progress and development.

Meanwhile, the Executive Vice President of Unilever on January 16 expressed his displeasure with the governance of President Akufo-Addo.

Akufo-Addo has banked his hope on a man who knows nothing – Basintale criticises Bawumia –

0

The Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has raised concerns about the chosen flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

He said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, hopeful for a particular outcome in the 2024 elections, has placed his trust in an individual whom he describes as having no knowledge of the economy.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, Basintale said that the vice president lacks an understanding of how economic dynamics work in the country.

To him, Bawumia is only quick at making promises without a clear understanding of their economic feasibility.

“I used to think that President Akufo-Addo was the problem, and I used to think that he just appeared insensitive, probably wicked and he decided to plunge the Ghanaian people into this particular situation we find ourselves in.

“But I have come to understand that he’s banked his hopes on a man who virtually knows nothing. A man who does not understand the economic corridors of this country, a man who goes about promising because probably, promises are the only tax-free components in this country,” he said.

He continued: “This is also a man who does not even understand how to cater for this particular difficulty we’ve found ourselves in.

Basintale added that Bawumia lacks the capacity to address the challenges facing the nation, particularly in terms of low productivity, economic growth, and high unemployment rates.

“Our problem in this country today has to do with low productivity, low economic growth, and a hard high unemployment rate. All other developed countries that have moved their economies from taxation to production, from unemployment to a better employment status have implemented the 24-hour system,” he stated.
