Huawei’s FinTech 2.0 To Support Ghana’s Mobile Money, Deepen Financial Inclusion |

0

Huawei on Thursday, March 16, 2023 delivered its position on the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications’ 2023 Mobile Technology for Development (MT4D) Conference dubbed, “Driving Digital Inclusion In The Real Economy” with its FinTech 2.0 Solution.

At the event, held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, Mr. Lee Maina, Head of FinTech, Huawei Southern Africa Region  indicated that, Huawei as a Global Leader in FinTech Solutions with insight on current trends in Ghana, Kenya and other Sub-Saharan countries where inclusion has heavily been driven by mobile money and its reach to the unserved and underserved, believes that: “It’s the ideal time to expand FinTech from being ubiquitous to a tool used in deepening financial inclusion to help drive value for the real economy.”

According to Mr. Lee Maina, Mobile FinTech space is entering a new phase where customer data is becoming more critical in the endeavor to authenticate, offer the most suitable services and in carrying out more precise credit assessments. “This is no longer those “nice to have” approaches but a vital cog in retaining and gaining market share in an ever-crowding industry where even new entrants are challenging established incumbents.”

In the race for ownership of the customers’ mind share, we believe the winners will be the ones that will have the most valuable, relevant, holistic and authenticated body of data that enables them to offer the most suitable services to customers, at the most suitable time and at a user specific pricing.

For us to generate this rich data that’s scattered across different sectors, platforms and players, there is the need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders not only in bringing everyone online but also in collapsing our approach to technology from Silo based to layer based where information is easily shared. Huawei’s FinTech 2.0 seeks to bridge this gap created by fragmentation by bringing this layered approach not just to FinTech Technology but also in the upselling of ideal services where the personalized proposition for each user deepens based on our understanding of each customers habits and needs.

As a world-leading ICT enterprise, Our Vision and Mission is to bring digital to every person, home and organization for a fully connected and intelligent world. With Fintech 2.0, we continue to invest heavily in FinTech research and innovation, supporting players in the FinTech space to create end to end solutions that will bring the value chains online, basically seeking to solve some of the persistent problems they may be having beyond payments.

That way, we remove any lethargies to adoption extending their resilience, ultimately generating the required data to extend services & drive localized innovation and ensuring efficient deployment of capital and resources.

For the Ghanaian market, Huawei has deployed its Finance and payments cloud as part of its FINTECH 2.0 strategy which boasts micro loan, buy now pay later, shoppers’ loan, overdraft, savings, Super apps with mini apps etc. allowing FinTechs in Ghana to enjoy them on SAAS (Software As A Service) mode with minimal investment whiles offering them the flexibility to localize the solutions and utilize the local developer ecosystem for scale & support via a low code/no code developer platform.

Its estimated that Ghana has over 20K developers and the local universities add approximately 1K new developers into the job market annually. It’s not viable to absorb all these talents in the current job environment nor will all the surplus have an equal stab at entrepreneurship, it is therefore prudent to devise a sustainable way to accommodate them into our FinTech strategy and ecosystem and they will play a vital role not only in scaling our services to the longtail customer segments but also in driving local innovations. Huawei Low code/no code developer solution empowers FinTechs to achieve this vision.

“We have deployed our FinTech in more than 40 sites globally which is currently serving more than 400M customers, so It’s not just Technology but our ability to package all this best practice learnings from other successful sites and bring that success DNA to your project to ensure faster time to revenue. Huawei seeks partnerships in Ghana with like-minded organizations to deepen financial inclusion”, – Lee Maina – Huawei Head of FinTech, Southern Africa region.

X reacts as Jurgen Klopp sensationally announces Liverpool departure –

0

If you were hoping for a quiet Friday in the football world, those dreams were shattered at about 10:36 GMT when huge news broke from Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp, renowned as one of the greatest managers around the globe for his work at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, announced his decision to leave the Reds before they returned to FA Cup action on Sunday against Norwich City at Anfield.

The German arrived in the Premier League in 2015, succeeding Brendan Rodgers and leading Liverpool back to regular Champions League football before lifting the European trophy in 2019 and the Premier League title a year later.

Klopp reached three other European finals with Liverpool, being beaten twice by Real Madrid in the Champions League and once by Sevilla in the Europa League, and also won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Community Shield, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Naturally, the news of his departure has caused an absolute frenzy. Liverpool fans now face an uncertain wait until Klopp’s replacement is confirmed, though they still have four trophies to fight for between now and the end of the season.

Fans on social media have even put rivalries aside to acknowledge the seismic event

It’s as of yet unconfirmed whether Klopp felt Manchester United‘s recent off-field activity was cause enough to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. That’s probably not it, but who knows?

Klopp now faces one last stretch as Reds manager, with the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup all still up for grabs.

Richard Ahiagbah speaks on money distribution

0

The Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has refuted claims that the party distributed money to voters during the recent by-election in Ejisu, in the Ashanti region.

According to him, there is also no evidence to back the numerous allegations of vote-buying made by individuals and civil society organizations.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, May 4, Mr Ahiagbah stated, “To be very honest with you, I have seen those videos but I don’t know the source of those monies they are referring to.”

He emphasised that during his visit to the Ejisu constituency, he did not disburse funds to individuals.

“I have been in that constituency for a good number of times. I appreciate the work that was done by others but for my team especially, we did house-to-house, community engagements with the view of letting the people know what the government has done and the track record of the individual whom they have selected [Kwabena Boateng] to lead them and to replace Dr John Kumah,” he said.

Addressing the stronghold status of the NPP in Ejisu, Mr Ahiagbah underscored the significant investment made by the party to ensure electoral success.

However, he dismissed claims of monetary inducement, stating, “I don’t see why we would have done all that work only to want to use money to induce people’s vote.”

He clarified that any financial support provided was aimed at facilitating transportation for voters, particularly the elderly, rather than influencing their decisions.

The NPP Communications Director firmly denied any organised distribution of money by the party, stressing, “The party didn’t organise anything to do that.”

He reiterated the party’s commitment to fair elections, emphasising his belief in “one man, one vote.”

Mr Ahiagbah claimed that the purported distribution of money might be from individuals interested in tarnishing the reputation of the party, adding that the political landscape is rife with various individuals with malicious intentions.

‘Referees Make Example Of Me’

0

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham hit out at his two-game suspension in LaLiga on Wednesday, calling it “a bit ridiculous” and claiming that “because I’m new [to the league], they want to make an example [of me].”

He was handed a two-game ban by the Spanish football federation (RFEF)’s disciplinary committee this week following his red card for protesting the referee’s decision to blow his whistle seconds before he found the net for a late winner in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Valencia.

Bellingham, who provided an assist for Vinícius Júnior in Madrid’s 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday as they progressed 2-1 on aggregate, now will not appear again until March 31, unless the club are successful in an appeal.

“It’s difficult to talk about, because there’s appeals going on,” Bellingham told Movistar after the match. “All I can say is what happened, with the referee’s decision to blow the whistle. He’s human, but so am I.

“I didn’t say anything offensive. I feel like at times because I’m new, they want to make an example [of me], which I’m cool with. I have to take responsibility for my actions. I think two games is a bit ridiculous but if I have to miss those two games, I’ll support the team from the stands.”

The two-game ban would see Bellingham miss Madrid’s LaLiga games against Celta Vigo on Sunday and Osasuna on March 16.

Bellingham headed Brahim Diaz’s pass into the net in the 99th minute of Madrid’s game at Mestalla, with the game tied at 2-2, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano had blown the final whistle as Diaz shaped to cross.

Gil Manzano’s report said that he then sent Bellingham off for an “aggressive attitude” after “repeatedly” shouting “it’s a f—ing goal” in English.

The RFEF’s disciplinary committee found that Madrid had not provided sufficient evidence to prove beyond doubt that the referee’s assessment was mistaken.

Bellingham has scored 16 goals in 22 league appearances this season, helping Madrid top the table.

His assist against Leipzig made it four goals and four assists in six Champions League games for Madrid.

Hohoe “DMB Volunteers” outline strategic blueprints towards 2024 victory

0

By Edward Williams,

Hohoe (V/R), Nov. 20, GNA – A voluntary group of vibrant young men and women supporting Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB), has released strategic and detailed plans to enable the New Patriotic Party (NPP) win the Elections2024 in the Hohoe Constituency.

Known as the Hohoe DMB Volunteers, the Group said the blueprints were the cardinal objectives that would help Dr Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the Party win votes of the Hohoe constituents in December 2024.

Mr Justice Alexander Adigbli, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the group at a press conference in Hohoe, said there was the need for the Party to conduct research for informed decision-making in the Constituency.

The research would help gather, analyse and disseminate relevant data and information that would help connect well with the electorate effectively to drive home DMB’s president bid, he said.

Mr Adigbli said a research team should be established to conduct comprehensive studies on key issues affecting Ghanaians such as the economy, to serve as the foundation for Dr Bawumia’s campaign and marketing.

He said there was the need to increase voter awareness in the Constituency through educational campaigns across institutions, town hall meetings, and door-to-door outreach to inform communities about the Flagbearer’s policies and plans.

Mr Adigbli noted that volunteers must be recruited and trained to actively engage with the communities.

He said the volunteers should be equipped to effectively communicate Dr Bawumia’s vision and research-backed policies which would foster a sense of trust and credibility among voters.

Mr Adigbli said the Hohoe DMB Volunteers were resolute and committed to their agenda and called on all constituents to join the historic journey of success.

Stop escorting your friends to and from KIA, else you’ll be sacked – Henry Quartey warns Immigration officers –

0

Interior Minister Henry Quartey has warned immigration officials stationed at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), cautioning against the practice of escorting or receiving friends at the airport.

In a directive, the minister emphasised that any Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer found violating this instruction would face dismissal.

During his visit to the GIS headquarters in Accra on Thursday, April 4, Minister Quartey expressed his dismay at the conduct observed among some officers.

He highlighted instances where officers in uniform were seen assisting friends through immigration and security checkpoints, a practice he deemed unacceptable.

“Men and women wear uniforms only to go and see off their friends at the Airport. They pull their bags right from the car and walk through checking, walk them through immigration and even security points all the way.

“You see them lined up waiting for their friends, they take their bags. I have told the CG to send a message to them that it has to stop with immediate effect, and I mean immediate effect.

“We will send plain clothes to go there. If an immigration officer is found around the arrival hall or departure hall, engaging passengers please consider that you will be at home for a long time and that will be coming from me, not the CG. So, tell them,” myjoyonline.com quoted him to have said during his visit to the headquarters.

Media Trial Unfair, Betta Edu Deserves Fair Hearing — Ohanaeze Youths

0

Betta Edu

The youth wing of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has cautioned Nigerians against the media trial of Betta Edu, the embattled Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Recall that on January 8, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended Edu as the after a document surfaced where she asked Oluwatoyin Madein, Accountant-General of the Federation, to transfer N585 million to a private account.

The President also directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) “to conduct a thorough investigation into all aspects of the financial transaction” involving Edu’s ministry.

Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, leader of the association, while speaking during a press conference on Sunday, commended Tinubu for setting up a panel to investigate the case rather than “sacking her outrightly.”

According to him, the suspended Minister should be given the benefit of the doubt until proven guilty.

“We also thank him for setting up a presidential panel to investigate the veracity of the allegations instead of sacking her outright.

“Consequently, we hereby wish to rally support for the suspended minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, Dr Edu, by calling on Nigerians to allow her a fair hearing and let the ongoing investigation run its course without media trial.

“Nigerians should give her the benefit of the doubt until the series of investigations into her involvement in the alleged N583m financial wrongdoing have proved her to be complicit.

“Judging by the actions of some persons in the media, it is obvious that there is too much media trial around Dr Edu and those who wanted her out of favour with the Federal Government are sustaining the spins to her disadvantage.

“Media trial is unfair. An allegation has been levelled against her, and President Bola Tinubu, in his wisdom, had suspended her to allow for a transparent and unimpeded investigation. The best thing to do in the circumstance is to allow the process of investigation to conclude instead of crucifying her as if she had been found to be guilty.

“There is the need to find what the problem really was about the memo she put up to the Accountant General of the Federation, although, the Accountant General had said that she did not honour the payment,” the Ohanaeze youth leader said.

Okpalaezeukwu furthered that if after the investigation, Edu is vindicated, the President would be urged to reconsider her appointment to continue as a minister.

“We are of the view that Nigerians should hold their peace during the pendency of the series of investigations, which we believe would either prove or disprove wrongdoing.

“If it is confirmed in the long run that she had committed some administrative infractions and not necessarily monetary diversion, we shall very well urge President Bola Tinubu to review her suspension and allow her to continue as a member of his cabinet.

“Betta was entrusted with a ministry as huge as humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation and everyone can attest to the fact that she remains one of the best in the Tinubu-led Government, We must be careful not to throw away the baby with the bathwater,” he added.

Ventures Africa BizHive: Ventures Africa releases the second edition of its business seriesIs waste the future?

0

Ventures Africa (www.VenturesAfrica.com), an online news platform and community that produces stories about an evolving Africa, has released the second edition of its business series, Ventures Africa BizHive. The quarterly digital magazine covers news analysis and discussions around entrepreneurship, evolving business trends and innovations around Africa.

This latest issue titled Is waste the future? (https://apo-opa.info/45JkMIU) explores waste management and recycling from a unique angle that could shape Africa’s future for the better.

Waste generated in sub-Saharan Africa alone is 62 million tons (https://apo-opa.info/3QssoLx) a year, with only 4 percent of the waste recycled. Not just that, there are about 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean globally. But even as this is approached using the ‘reduce-reuse-recycle’ process, the goal is for everyone to actively participate in getting maximum value and use from raw materials, products and waste in order to save energy.

“We are one of the top polluters of the ocean in the world and it’s really sad because there is an unexplored opportunity here, going to waste. But we can solve a lot of issues by tapping into this sector. We can be the first to get plastic recycling right in Africa, we can set the pace,” says Bilkiss Adebiyi Abiola, Founder, Wecyclers.

As we approach this using the ‘reduce-reuse-recycle’ process, the goal is to get maximum value and use from raw materials, products and waste in order to save energy.

Ventures Africa spoke with Faith Aweko, Naluyima Shamin and Racheal Mema of Reform Africa Bags. A trio who turn polythene bags into durable backpacks in Uganda.

Ayodeji Onikute, the CEO and founder of Dechets a l’or also shares some insight on how African governments can tap into the economic potential of waste to create a sustainable waste sector. Dechets a l’or is a social venture that creates new sources of revenue for communities and improves environmental sustainability through an innovative waste management system in Guinea.

The issue also takes a look at the economic and welfare cost of plastic pollution, waste management policies and the role of the government, countries with a ban or restriction on single-use-plastics, and the potential of e-waste in driving economic growth across Africa.

A world where plastics and other harmful waste no longer pose a threat is a future worth fighting for. Join us as we make a case for the future of waste. Read in full here (https://apo-opa.info/45JkMIU).

Welcome to our family reunion – Dave Chappelle thankful to be in Ghana

0

American Comedian Dave Chappelle is seemingly enjoying his time in Ghana.

In a video going viral on social media, the comedian was heard thanking Ghanaians for their welcome and opening their arms to African Americans travelling into the country.

Speaking at the pre-event party ahead of his conversation with Chance The Rapper on Thursday, he stated that they have yearned to connect with their roots and could not be more grateful to be in Ghana.

Tagging the get-together as a family reunion Dave Chappelle thanked Chance and Vic Mensa for facilitating the Black Star Line Festi that has brought him and others to Ghana.

“We back home, and everyone from Ghana welcomed us. We couldn’t thank you enough. We longed to be back, we longed to be connected and now thanks to Chance (The Rapper) and Vic (Mensa) we all are, welcome to our family reunion,” he said.

Dave Chapelle added “everyone bear witness, we are all together, peaceful, happy and respected. That is the culture of this party.”

This comes nearly a year after he is interested in travelling to Ghana in the foreseeable future.

In a conversation with model Naomi Campbell on her podcast, in April 2021, the comedian said his decision was inspired by award-winning Soul singer Steve Wonder who said in an interview recently that he wants to relocate to Ghana permanently.

Dave Chappelle said he is interested in not only visiting Ghana but buying some properties and opening a comedy club in the country.

He said he got in touch with Naomi Campbell and Ghanaian British architect David Adjaye to help facilitate his plans.

Meanwhile, the comedian is expected to host an event alongside Chance The Rapper at the University of Ghana as part of the lineups for the Black Star Line Festi.

This will be followed by a musical concert on Friday, January 6.

Ghanaians have to accept that COVID-19 badly affected us

0

Former member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, Frederick Opare-Ansah has reinforced Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s claim that Ghana’s economic challenges are a result of the Russia-Ukraine war and COVID-19.

According to him, Ghanaians must begin to accept that the aforementioned global pandemic had a horrifying impact on the economy.

Mr. Opare-Ansah speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Thursday, asserted that, the economy is gradually picking up due to the competent leadership of President Akufo-Addo and his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“We all have to agree that we have suffered as a nation under COVID-19. We have to agree that we have been impacted by the Russia-Ukraine war. The good thing about this is Ghana has never been out of fuel, we have constant electricity, and government workers are still being paid. We understand that the country is hard but it is beginning to get better,” he said.

Google’s Answer Box Changed the Meaning of Information

0

The hallway is bathed in harsh white, a figment of LEDs. Along the walls, doors recede endlessly into the distance. Each flaunts a crown of blue light at its base, except for the doors you’ve walked through before, which instead emit a deep purple. But these are but specks of sand in the desert of gateways.

You are searching for something.

You prepare yourself for an arduous journey. Before the first door you come upon a pedestal. The box that lies on the pedestal gives airs of gildedness despite being as plain as the walls that surround it. It isn’t adorned with a title, but its name echoes in your mind, intuitively: the Answer Box. A plaque reads:

I have crawled through each and every door. Not just the doors in this hallway, but the doors in every hallway in existence, the doors within doors, as well as some doors that I dare not show you, doors that would make you flee in terror. I have seen everything. I am impartial. I have your best interests at heart. I understand what it is you want to know and it is knowable. I have the answer that you seek.

Your finger caresses the latch.

Cataloging the web was doomed from the start. In the summer of 1993, Matthew Gray created the World Wide Web Wanderer (WWWW), arguably the first internet bot and web crawler. During its first official attempt to index the web, The Wanderer returned from its expedition with 130 URLs. But even in the baby years of the internet, this list was incomplete.

To understand how a simple web crawler works, imagine making a travel itinerary that contains three cities: New York, Tokyo, Paris. While visiting each destination, listen for any mentions of other places and add those to your itinerary. Your world crawl is complete when you have visited all of the cities on your ever-growing list. Will you have seen a lot of places by the end of your journey? Undoubtedly. But will you have seen the whole world? Almost certainly not. There will always be cities, or entire webs of cities, that are effectively invisible to this process.

A web crawler similarly consults a list of URLs and recursively visits any links it sees. But the resulting index should not be confused with a comprehensive directory of the internet, which does not exist.

I have a theory of technology that places every informational product on a spectrum from Physician to Librarian:

The Physician’s primary aim is to protect you from context. In diagnosing or treating you, they draw on years of training, research, and personal experience, but rather than presenting that information to you in its raw form, they condense and synthesize. This is for good reason: When you go to a doctor’s office, your primary aim is not to have your curiosity sparked or to dive into primary sources; you want answers, in the form of diagnosis or treatment. The Physician saves you time and shelters you from information that might be misconstrued or unnecessarily anxiety-provoking.

In contrast, the Librarian’s primary aim is to point you toward context. In answering your questions, they draw on years of training, research, and personal experience, and they use that to pull you into a conversation with a knowledge system, and with the humans behind that knowledge system. The Librarian may save you time in the short term by getting you to a destination more quickly. But in the long term, their hope is that the destination will reveal itself to be a portal. They find thought enriching, rather than laborious, and understand their expertise to be in wayfinding rather than solutions. Sometimes, you ask a Librarian a question, and they point you to a book that is an answer to a question you didn’t even think to ask. Sometimes, you walk over to the stacks to retrieve the book, only for a different book to catch your eye instead. This too is success to the Librarian.

We’ve identified 20 evacuation centres; we’ve no issue reaching them – NADMO –

0

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said it has identified twenty evacuation centres in the areas affected by the flood that was caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

NADMO says it has no difficulties reaching the people in these centres to provide them with relief items.

Speaking on the mid-day news on TV3 on Friday, October 20, the Public Relations Officer of NADMO, George Ayisi said “We are really giving relief support to all the about 20 evacuation points. Water supply, food items, and all other things, food and non-food items that they need to be able to live their normal life in such a situation, we are providing that so far.

He stressed “We have 20 identified evacuation centers, those there, we reach them directly and we are not having any challenges getting to them. However we all keep getting responses that there are some who have gone to integrate with families and are also facing difficulties so they need that support, they are the ones that we are trying to get the opinion leaders, the assemblymen to help us to reach them and sometimes.”

On this same issue, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto accused the Volta River Authority (VRA) of causing the disaster hence the authority must compensate the victims.

“The media has been phenomenal in highlighting the grave levels of devastation following the VRA-induced disaster. We are exceedingly grateful. The over 12,000 displaced constituents of mine will never forget you. Kudos TV3 for your comprehensive coverage from the ground at prime time this morning. Together we shall survive this man-made disaster and secure justice for all victims,” he tweeted.

He further stated that “Yesterday we cut sod for construction to begin on a First Sky Group housing project to relocate a good number of my 12,000 beloved displaced constituents. First Sky’s subsidiary known as Construction Ambassadors are executing the project which they promise to complete in record time. As our contribution, we are offering free land at all agreed three locations. Additionally, we stand ready to provide communal labour support.

“The relocation will begin to restore the dignity of my beloved constituents, ensure they live in much healthier conditions, and free the 21 schools being used as safe havens so our children can return to school. North Tongu shall never forget the generosity and humanity of the First Sky Group. May God bless you all bountifully. Together, we shall survive this man-made disaster.”

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the VRA, Mr Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa said that the lake was experiencing inflows more than expected hence the spillage was going to continue.

“We are on phase II [of the spillage] right now and it is a cycle. It is normal at this time of the year for us to experience inflows. The difference is that we are getting more than expected and to safeguard this dam means that we have to spill water, that is the standard operation for any hydro dam but the inflows that we are seeing now are in excess.

“Definitely, as the cycle goes through this will recede so we are hoping it will recede in the next time,” he told journalists on Thursday, October 12.

“The spilling may continue even though we are anticipating that the levels may drop down to phase 1, which was started on September 15 but of course, we did not have much excess as we are seeing now, this is an emergency as we have seen from the beginning.

“Whether dredging or no dredging it is an emergency. The volume of water that is coming into the lake right now which we have to throw out, it means that we need to evacuate people from wherever they are to ensure they are safe until the inflows recede,” he added.

The VRA was accused of neglecting its responsibilities in the Lower Volta Basin hence the huge impact of flood caused by spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on communities.

Title-chasing Arsenal salvage point against Southampton

0

Aaron Ramsdale conceded inside the first 30 seconds for the second time at Emirates Stadium this season

Premier League leaders Arsenal scored two late goals as they fought back to draw a thriller at home to struggling Southampton.

It was a third draw in a row for the Gunners and Manchester City are now five points behind but with two games in hand – and host the Gunners at Etihad Stadium next Wednesday.

Saints led after just 28 seconds, when Carlos Alcaraz capitalised on an Aaron Ramsdale error to score.

Arsenal have now conceded the two fastest goals at home in the Premier League this season, the other being Philip Billing’s strike after 9.11 seconds for Bournemouth.

Theo Walcott doubled the Southampton lead against his former club, before Gabriel Martinelli pulled one back for the league leaders.

Duje Caleta-Car restored the Southampton two-goal advantage and appeared to seal the three points – only for Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka to score in the 88th and 90th minutes to earn a draw.

It follows draws away to Liverpool and West Ham United for Mikel Arteta’s side in their previous two games.

Southampton remain bottom of the table and three points from safety, having now failed to win in seven league games.

Atta Akyea worried over outstanding govt businesses amidst Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation

0

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has expressed his concerns regarding the timing of the shake-up within the Majority Leadership in Parliament.

He believes the changes at this juncture could jeopardize the unity within the caucus in the house.

MP for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has been designated as the new Majority Leader. Patricia Appiagyei, the MP for Asokwa, will serve as the deputy, and the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, will remain the Chief Whip. Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon, has been appointed Deputy Whip, while Alex Tettey Djonobuah has been named as the Second Deputy Whip.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Atta Akyea stressed that the reshuffle might dampen the Majority’s enthusiasm for conducting government business in the house.

“The timing is bad, and there are a lot of government businesses that are outstanding, and we need to have peace and harmony to conclude them. There have been very turbulent months; some MPs lost their primaries, others are in pain, some deputy ministers were reshuffled, and if you care to know, even some ministers were changed, so the system is very fluid, and we need to see how we bind people together and heal wounds.”

He also described the resignation of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader as unfortunate.

“As far as I am concerned, it is most unfortunate because of the kind of confidence that the rest of the members of the caucus had in him [Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu], and we do not know what the power play is going to be like without him around. He might have taken the decision without reference to all the people who believed that he was a colossus of a parliamentarian and that the party had the advantage of him being around.

Transfers between bank accounts linked to MoMo wallet should not attract E-Levy – GRA insists –

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has reaffirmed its position regarding Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) charges, specifically addressing concerns related to transactions between bank accounts and mobile money wallets.

The GRA has made it clear that accounts linked directly to one’s mobile money wallet should not attract any E-Levy charges during transactions.

The clarification comes in response to an X user’s request for clarity on recent deductions being reported on social media.

The user questioned “Are taxes imposed on the transfer of monies from bank accounts to linked momo numbers a directive from your office? @Ghana Revenue.”

In response, the GRA clarified that any charges incurred in such transactions are errors on the part of the charging entities.

The GRA emphasized that these charges are illegal, as the laws surrounding the E-levy have not changed.

“No, please. It is an error on the part of the charging entities. The law has not changed. Transfers between accounts owned by the same person should not attract the E-levy,” the GRA said in its Twitter reply.

‘If Your Woman Can’t Place You On Monthly Allowance, Don’t Marry Her’ – Daddy Freeze Advises Men

0

Popular media personality, Ifedayo Olarinde, best known as Daddy Freeze, has advised men not to date women who cannot place them on monthly allowances.

He further urged his gender to desist from marrying “hungry” women, saying “enough is enough.”

According to the controversial On Air Personality, men should be bold in demanding from women what they can offer them before deciding to marry.

“Stop marrying girls that are hungry. Enough is enough! Before you marry a girl, ask her, ‘What are you going to do for me?’ Start asking. Start being bold. Ask her, ‘How much are you paying me as allowance monthly?’

“Any woman that cannot give you a monthly allowance is not worth your time. Stop marrying beneath you. Adenuga’s child will marry Dangote’s child. Have you ever seen any Adenuga’s child marry a bricklayer? Do you know who Dangote’s daughter married? She married former Inspector General of Police’s son. Then you a whole man you’re going to marry someone that’s earning half of your salary or struggling to earn what you are earning. If you earn N10,000 per month, look for a woman that earn N30,000 per month. And the woman must be beautiful and curvy as well as good in the bedroom. Isn’t that how they rate us?” Daddy Freeze opined in a recent Instagram live session with fans.

Philipa Baafi Has Revealed The Secret To A Long Lasting Marriage

0

Famous Ghanaian gospel singer and skilled Physician Assistant Philipa Baafi has expressed her opinion that the importance of romantic activity in a successful marriage is frequently exaggerated.

Philipa Baafi recently shared during a chat on Property FM that making wise decisions and having a partner with a high degree of understanding are crucial to having a successful and long-lasting marriage.
She believes that mutual understanding and well studied decisions, rather than sexual connection, are the keys to maintaining a healthy marriage.

Most often I do say that s3x plays just a minimal role because after you get married you become like siblings to each other……The Bible says can two walk together except they agree and so how can I journey on in life if my husband doesn’t share similar ideas with me it’ll be difficult,” she stated.

Philipa shared her personal experience, saying that if her spouse had not been supportive of her decisions and goals, things would have been challenging.

‘During courtship, I realized that my husband understood my vision because if it wasn’t so like things will be very difficult and so I made him aware of what I wanted to do. So the most important thing is decision making and so you have to get someone you both understand each other which is a very important aspect,” She disclosed.

Though the beauty of the person counts and the other things you want to consider but they’re secondary but understanding each other is primary,” Philipa Baafi retorted.

“I think it’s difficult to be like [Manchester United legendary manager Sir Alex] Ferguson, I hope to be, here at Barcelona,” manager Xavi said of the legacy he would like to leave. “I am grateful to the president, he tells me that he is happy with the work that all the staff are doing.

“The president is faithful and loyal and we are grateful for that. I hope he stays here for years, but we depend on the results. It’s not the time to talk [about a renewal], I have one more year to go [on my contract].”

Outgoing La Liga champions Real Madrid will be at home to Almeria, while Atletico Madrid will face Real Valladolid at Estadio Municipal Jose Zorrilla. The two capital city heavyweights are fighting to finish in second spot behind Barca, and the Rojiblancos have credited their improved form in the second half of the season to simple hard work.

The round also features key relegation clashes, with in-danger Valencia and Espanyol facing Cadiz away and Getafe at home respectively, while European-chasing clubs Real Sociedad and Villarreal will be away to Osasuna and at home to Celta Vigo respectively.

“We have built some good momentum, now we need to maintain it to the end of the season,” said Yellow Submarine manager Quique Setien. “A place in Europe looked very far away a couple of months ago, but it is within our reach now.”

NIA Clears Ghana Card Backlog |

0

The National Identification Authority (NIA) says it has completed the printing of the backlog of 541,529 Ghana Cards in its database in 10 days pursuant to the promise made to Parliament on February 28, 2023 to print the said cards in 11 days upon receipt of a supply of blank cards.

The expedited printing exercise began on March 18, 2023 and concluded on Monday, March 27, 2023 with all records in backlog printed.

The ultimate objective of this exercise was to print records of registered Ghanaians in backlog since July 2022.

In a statement issued March 29, the NIA said “With focus, rigour and coherence in project management and implementation, NIA achieved this feat with a dedicated team of Supervisors, Assistant Technical Support Officers and Assistant Technical Enrolment Officers drawn from its Headquarters, Regional and Districts Offices. The staff worked fervently for ten continuous days in two shifts — day and night.”

The printed cards, which are now being packaged, the NIA said will be distributed to NIA’s Regional and District Offices nationwide from today Wednesday, March 29, 2023, to Sunday, April 2, 2023 for issuance to registered applicants.

“All Ghanaians who have registered for their Ghana Cards since July 2022 but are yet to receive, are assured that effective Wednesday, April 5, 2023, they can visit the District or Regional Offices where they registered for their printed cards to be issued to them.

“The NIA stands committed to serving the public and the nation as a whole with respect, dignity, integrity and efficiency as a dedicated and responsible public sector institution,” the statement from the Corporate Affairs Directorate read.

Sports Minister optimistic of retaining Yagaba-Kubori seat for NPP

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Yagaba-Kubori Constituency in the North East Region, Mustapha Ussif is optimistic of retaining the seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Youth and Sports Minister who has become a colossus in politics in the area, believes he has performed exceedingly well to be given another term by constituents.

Hon. Mustapha Ussif filed his nomination and appears to enjoy the support of delegates.

Mustapha Ussif, then Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS) humiliated the then MP for Yagaba-Kubori, Alhaji Abdul-Rauf Tanko Ibrahim in the 2020 general elections.

Alhaji Abdul-Rauf Tanko Ibrahim who was seeking to retain the seat in the North East Region for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), performed abysmally as he polled 9,393 votes as against 18,152 votes for the victor.

The LPG candidate polled 68 votes with 728 rejected ballots

In the presidential, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo polled 17,099 votes as against 9,881 votes for John Dramani Mahama.

NDC drags Supreme Court into voter registration challenges

0

NDC National Youth Organizer

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the Supreme Court is partly responsible for the challenges that have marred the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The National Youth Organiser, George Opare-Addo has said the Electoral Commission(EC) operates with no sense of responsibility due to certain actions by the Apex Court.

“The EC must register everybody who is eligible and is willing to register. The law also says that you should make the registration centres closer to the people. The EC is not going by any of those laws and principles.

“I blame our Supreme Court because in 2020, public officers owe a duty to the people they serve. At the end of a service, you owe it a duty to account for your stewardship,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.

He added, “When Jean Mensa was brought to the Supreme Court, after changing her own election results four times. The Supreme Court gave her a leeway and did not let her stand in the dock.

“If she had been put in the dock like Dr Afari Gyan [former EC Chair] did…when you are a public servant after rendering services and there are challenges…you owe it a duty to tell us why those changes.”

The registration exercise which started on May 7 ahead of the December elections has been fraught with network challenges, delaying the process.

There have therefore been calls for the electoral body to extend the May 27 deadline to make up for the time loss – a proposal the EC said it will implement if need be.

Churches want you to fix the economy and not give them incentives – Bawumia told –

0

Aide to the former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari has told the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, that the church will want him to fix the broken economy.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, while addressing the clergy on his campaign tour, said churches are not supposed to be taxed.

He believes that churches should rather be seen as development partners because of the work they do in society.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia touted the church’s contribution to development in various aspects of the economy.

He hinted that when he becomes President, he will rather support churches with incentives in order for them to do more for the country.

But Joyce Bawa Mogtari said the churches do not need incentives rather, the Vice President should look at fixing the economy to make the lives of the people easier.

Her post shared via X said, “It is obvious that our VP Bawumia thinks that continuing to tell lies, talk loosely, and lie to Ghanaian voters is the only solution to his failure to garner support for his moribund campaign! Mr. ‘no ideas’ Bawumia, now says that the public purse strings he has milked empty and left bankrupt should give financial support to our beloved Churches all because of votes! The leaders of our churches in Ghana have in unison decried and berated this Akufo Addo and Bawumia run NPP government for the misgovernance and mismanagement of the economy and I am sure that they would rather that Bawumia fixes the economy for the betterment of our livelihoods and living standards rather than offering tokens of unavailable financial resources to Ghanaian Churches and Mosques.”

Ministerial approval: Suhuyini condemns witch-hunting of NDC MPs

0

The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has condemned in no uncertain terms the “witch hunting” of some MPs alleged to have approved six ministers nominated by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

In his view, instead of seeking to fix what makes it possible for traitors and witches to thrive on, “we are focusing on the symptoms because that’s easy”.

“After two days, I’m now angry! Not angry at those who betrayed everyone, including themselves, but at those of us swearing our innocence whilst cursing and witch-hunting others and those making us all, the guilty and innocent, do that. I know the most popular and politically correct thing to do now is to condemn, huff and puff, but anyone who knows me well enough knows, I’m not one to mostly give in to what is popular or politically correct,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Read Suhuyini’s full post below:

A CAUCUS IN A PARTY

Like many, I was gobsmacked on Friday night when the results of our secret ballots on ministers were revealed. I couldn’t sleep the whole night after I got home. It felt like a general election defeat, and my bones at its joints ached as if they were falling apart.

After two days, I’m now angry!

Not angry at those who betrayed everyone, including themselves, but at those of us swearing our innocence whilst cursing and witch hunting others and those making us all, the guilty and innocent, do that. I know the most popular and politically correct thing to do now is to condemn, huff and puff, but anyone who knows me well enough knows, I’m not one to mostly give in to what is popular or politically correct.

I prefer to be on the side of what I deem fair and, in all instances, CORRECT!

No wonder one of the bases for some to suspect or even conclude that I’m among the renegades is because I criticized the WAY, including timing (emphasis mine), our parliamentary leadership was reshuffled. I still think it could have been done better, but my loyalty to our new leaders is absolute and indivisible.

That is why when the directive to reject the nominees was issued, as a member of the Appointment Committee, I asked these nominees the most uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing questions. I joined our NDC side of the committee to recommend that all nominees be rejected at the plenary.

Even on the floor, at least, on the Supreme Court nominees, I was one of our debaters, giving reasons and calling on the house to reject the nominations. I have therefore decided that anyone in NDC who requires me to prove my integrity is not worth it and, so, even if I have evidence of how I voted, I will not bother to prove my innocence to such a person. It is enough indictment that adults like us can’t seek to do what is right when we are not recorded or watched. I always used to sign off radio with the words: “Don’t do what you will not like your neighbours to find out”.

I understand that we are a community that prefers general conversations to having difficult ones. In times like this, it is easy to condemn, huff, puff, and curse, and it is risky to try to understand why it happened and how it could have been avoided.

So before I proceed further, let me say that I know who I am, so I don’t care if I’m held responsible for even all the thirty-two votes for Bryan Acheampong, 19 votes for K.T. Hammond and about 12 votes for Asabee etc.

However, the following facts ought to be known and examined dispassionately:

  1. The Minority Caucus that probably voted en bloc to get a Speaker elected from among us, first took the decision together as a caucus to propose a name for Speaker, before we brought the party and former president along. This provided the caucus with immense encouragement and guidance.
  2. The same Minority Caucus that lost the Hawa Koomson, Kojo Opong Nkrumah, etc, ministerial nominees vote, faltered when members on the Appointment Committee, in recommending nominees for the plenary to reject, left out the security ministers.

The party grassroots and leadership were unhappy that we did and demanded that we should amend our recommendations to include the security ministers. The leadership of the caucus thought it was too late to do so and pleaded with party leadership to allow the caucus to focus and vote on those already recommended, even though they acknowledged that they should have included the security ministers in their initial recommendations, especially because some of us on the Appointment Committee suggested it but were out-voted. That compromise between caucus leadership and party leadership was not reached before the vote was called and, in that confusion, we lost embarrassingly.

  1. Again, when the Minority Caucus took a decision together to oppose E-Levy and briefed the party, the party gave its support, and all 136/7 members were present and united in opposition to the E-Levy. The 1st Deputy Speaker’s seat was seized, and some majority MPs got injured when the vote on the E-Levy was first called, and we stood firm as a caucus to oppose it.
Three months later, the Supreme Court gave a curious ruling on our resistance mounted against the majority side. So when the E-Levy vote was called again, whether deliberate or a miscalculation, it was suggested by some lawyers amongst us, and supported by some senior members, to test the ruling of the Supreme Court by walking out in order to deny the majority the needed quorum to take the decision. I was one of the few against that walkout because I insisted to some of the lawyers and senior colleagues that the optics didn’t seem right. Alas, I was proven right, though I have never until now claimed vindication.

The media thought our walkout was contrived, and the majority went ahead and passed the E-levy. Some of our colleagues who gave the advice or supported it, perhaps to save face or to genuinely test the Supreme Court reasoning, went to court, and I believe the case is yet to even be called.

  1. As a caucus, we decided among ourselves again to oppose the increase in VAT. We again briefed the party and elders, and they gave us their blessing. When the vote was called, we lost it by one vote because one of us, on health grounds, was abroad, but all others were present and stood to be counted.
  2. On this occasion, the decision to vote against the ministerial nominations was first heard by many MPs in the media when the party issued the three-line whip. An Appointment Committee member, like me, also heard it in the media. I recall being asked by a journalist at the time if the party press release meant we would not be vetting the nominees. I didn’t have an appropriate response because I honestly did not know at the time.

Later, some of us were informed that it was a decision taken by the party Political Committee and, yet again, some in caucus leadership also mentioned to some colleagues that it wasn’t really a Political Committee decision but a decision by one of our senior colleagues which the Political Committee adopted.
As a caucus, for some reason, I don’t recall that a meeting was ever called for us (MPs) and our caucus leaders to deliberate on how to execute the task. The last caucus meeting was with our presumptive flag-bearer (JM) and party leaders and elders for us to be reminded to ‘Save our Democracy’. No contribution was invited from the caucus members, and no member also requested to speak. Without any means or attempt to verify, we all left to Parliament believing that we were on the same page.

Therefore, in the case of three votes in 1, 3 & 4, above, we won one but lost two. 3 was lost on a technicality which is difficult to blame on one person or group of people, unless we can show that those who gave the advice to walkout and those who supported that advice did so deliberately knowing it was going to cost us. 4 was lost on health grounds unless again we can show that the absentee MP did so deliberately.

However, based on my experience during voting in 2 and 5 above, which we lost embarrassingly, the synergy between the party leadership and the caucus wasn’t perfect in both cases. So, instead of seeking to fix what makes it possible for traitors/witches to thrive on, we are focusing on the symptoms because that’s easy. That requires only some people, if they have ever disagreed with us or are not our buddies or for other reasons, to be put on the spotlight, declared guilty until proven innocent and the specks in their eyes plucked.

Andrew Roberts reminds us that, although the most common understanding of “leadership “ connotes inherent goodness, leadership is in fact completely morally neutral, a protean force of terrifying power that we must strive to orient towards moral ends.

I stand to be counted for loyalty and integrity. Enemies are not God!!!

Pernod Ricard Ghana Supports ‘Let’s Do It Ghana’ To Clean The Environment On World Cleanup Day |

0

Pernod Ricard Ghana, a subsidiary of the world’s No. 2 producer of spirits and wines, has partnered with ‘Let’s Do It Ghana,’ an international movement dedicated to addressing environmental and social issues, in a cleanup exercise at Laboma Beach Resort in Accra, marking their commitment to World Cleanup Day.

The partnership between Pernod Ricard Ghana and ‘Let’s Do It Ghana’ is driven by Pernod Ricard’s commitment to advocate for better resource management and to inspire informed choices in design, production, and consumption.

The cleanup exercise that took place on Saturday, September 16, 2023, was simultaneously observed in about 164 countries. The exercise brought about 700 volunteers to Laboma Beach from various organisations to collect tons of waste from the environment.

Commenting on the exercise, Sustainability and Responsibility Manager for Pernod Ricard Ghana, Eunice Osei-Tutu, said her company was very excited to once again join the World Cleanup Day exercise, which is consistent with the Circular Making Pillar of Pernod Ricard’s Sustainability and Responsibility roadmap.
“At Pernod Ricard, we always look for opportunities to advance sustainable actions that preserve the environment. Our operations have been laced with processes that optimize and help preserve natural resources, in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production – and 14 – Life Below Water” she said.

Madam Osei-Tutu further elaborated that the collaboration with ‘Let’s Do It Ghana’, is in line with the company’s ongoing efforts to remove single-bottle cartons from many brands across its portfolio.

“At Pernod Ricard, we recognize the finite nature of our world’s resources, which are under increasing pressure,” stated Madam Osei-Tutu.

She added, “We minimize waste throughout our processes, from concept to distribution. In alignment with this vision, we are embarking on an ‘UNBOXING’ initiative to reduce the environmental footprint of some of our products by minimizing waste.”

She further explained that the initiative perfectly aligns with Pernod Ricard’s circular strategy, guided by five core principles: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Respect.

For his part, Communications Director for Let’s Do It Ghana, Mr Lambert Donkor, emphasized the global significance of World Cleanup Day in addressing the worldwide waste crisis and promoting a sustainable future.

“World Cleanup Day is the largest one-day civic action against waste, aiming to raise awareness of the global mismanaged waste crisis and its impact on the environment. Since 2018, World Cleanup Days have been organized, engaging 70 million volunteers from 197 countries during the last five years. In 2022, the event brought together 15 million volunteers from 190 countries, using 30 million volunteer hours to collect 60,000 tons of waste from both land and ocean to protect the environment and marine life,” he said.

He added, “In Ghana, about 5,000 volunteers participated in the World Cleanup Day across the country and collected 77,300 kg of waste, while about 700 volunteers participated in our main cleanup event at Laboma Beach.

Mr. Donkor further called on the Ministry of Sanitation to emulate the volunteer mobilisation example led by Let’s Do It Ghana and its partners to make effective commitments to find sustainable solutions to Ghana’s sanitation crisis.

Akufo-Addo, Bawumia active promoters of galamsey – NDC

0

President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has blamed President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the destruction caused by illegal mining known in local parlance as galamsey.

The NDC has described the duo as active “collaborators and promoters” of the menace.

Addressing the press on Monday, the National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, accused the government of protecting appointees involved in the illegality.

“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply worried and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment.

They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade’.  Their actions through their Attorney-General to continuously protect corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak loudly. Posterity will never forgive them,” he stated.

The comment of Sammy Gyamfi is on the back of Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame’s opinion on former Environment Minister, Pro Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s galamsey report.

The report, which is being investigated by the Police CID, accused some government officials and NPP gurus of being involved in galamsey.

The individuals including Gabby Otchere-Darko, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, former Manso MP, Prof Albert Quarm among others denied their alleged involvement amidst the threat of legal action.

Subsequently, Mr Dame has said the report is empty and does not provide any evidence for the persons involved to be prosecuted and has therefore asked the police to discharge them except three others.

But to the NDC, the AG’s response is a mere cover up and has therefore cautioned they will prosecute the officials involved if voted into power.

Meanwhile, the party is demanding the immediate resignation of Mr Dame.

Ejisu SHTS: Rainstorm hasn’t disrupted academic activities

0

The Headmistress of Ejisu Senior High Technical School, Grace Asamani, has reassured the public that despite the recent rainstorm that wreaked havoc on the school’s boys’ dormitory and other classrooms, academic activities remain unaffected.

The destructive impact of Saturday’s rainstorm prompted swift action, with contractors already underway to re-roof the affected building.

In the interim, arrangements have been made to provide students with alternative accommodation, ensuring minimal disruption to their studies.

Speaking to Citi News in an interview on Monday, she indicated “Yesterday, the MCE was here with the Municipal Director, Presiding Member and other dignitaries. The MP also sent some people to come around and they did an assessment, early this morning a team was here, a contractor came and as you can see now they have taken off the roof and they said by the end of the week they would have finished with everything. So, the situation is under control.”

“This incident didn’t affect academic work in any way. The form one students are vacating tomorrow, and they are writing their exams. They are writing their last paper today. They are done with the first paper; they are on the second paper. So, when they finish, those who live in Kumasi, they can leave and those who live far away can leave tomorrow morning.”

Meanwhile, scores of students of the school were displaced following the rainstorm that occurred on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

The over 150 affected students sought shelter in classrooms on Saturday following the incident.

The students were at the dining hall when the incident happened. No injuries or casualties were recorded.

The rains which lasted for hours destroyed teaching and learning materials and the school’s storeroom where textbooks and other materials are kept have also been damaged.

Although the boys’ dormitory was the hardest hit, about seven classrooms were also affected.

Prices of foodstuff to remain high until June 2024 – GAWU –

0

The General Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU) is forecasting that prices of foodstuff would remain high until June when the harvesting of food would begin.

This is coming after food inflation fell consecutively for the last six months to 27.1% in January 2024.

Speaking to Joy Business, General Secretary, Edward Kareweh, warned that the prices of food would not get better any time soon.

“Well, the price of food will not get better anytime soon. Looking at the country as a whole, we are entering into or are already in the lean season of production and no part of the country is experiencing harvest of foodstuff, particularly the major samples”.

“If we look at maize, it’s not being harvested anywhere in the country. Similarly, rice is also not being harvested unless those in the irrigation areas”, he added.

He continued saying most parts of the country are not experiencing rainfall.

“Generally speaking, there are no rains throughout the country, and at this time also the Western parts of the country will begin preparation of their farms for the major season”.

“During this season, all the foodstuff we are eating is from last year. So don’t expect food prices to come down now”, he pointed out.

Furthermore, Mr. Kareweh said “we expect that by the middle to the end of March [2024], food prices will go up and stay high like that until we begin to harvest around June/July in the Southern parts of the country”.

Ten out of 15 Sub-Class register inflation higher than overall food inflation

Seven divisions recorded inflation rates higher than the national average.

They are Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (38.5%); Personal Care, Social Protection and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (32.0%); Restaurants and Accommodation Services (29.2%); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (27.7%) Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (27.1%); Health (26.6%) and Recreation, Sports and Culture (24.9%).

Spanish prosecutor files complaint with high court

0

A prosecutor has filed a complaint with Spain’s high court against suspended football federation president Luis Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion.

Rubiales kissed midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s Women’s World Cup final win, which she says was not consensual.

Hermoso filed a legal complaint over the kiss on Tuesday.

It is now up to the court to present formal charges against the 46-year-old.

Hermoso’s complaint was one of sexual assault but prosecutor Marta Durantez Gil has also added an allegation of coercion when filing to the high court.

A statement from the prosecutor’s office said Hermoso told Gil that her relatives had suffered pressure from Rubiales and his “professional entourage” to say that she “justified and approved what happened”.

“The prosecutors request that Luis Rubiales be questioned as an accused and Jenni Hermoso as a victim,” the prosecutor’s office added.

It also requests that information is gathered from authorities in Australia, where the incident took place.

Prior to the kiss, Rubiales had been seen grabbing his crotch while celebrating Spain’s 1-0 win over England in Sydney.

A high court judge will now assess the complaint and decide whether to accept or archive the request. If accepted, a magistrate will be assigned to lead an investigation, which will conclude either with a recommendation for the case to go to trial or be dismissed.

The charge of sexual assault under Spanish law can carry a punishment ranging from a fine to four years in prison.

“The high court often tackles crimes with an international dimension, such as terrorism or organised crime. It is involved in this case because the alleged assault by Mr Rubiales took place in Australia,” BBC Madrid correspondent Guy Hedgecoe explained.

Spanish prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation on 28 August, looking into whether the incident amounts to a crime of sexual assault.

At the time, Spain’s top criminal court said it was opening its investigation in light of the “unequivocal nature” of 33-year-old Hermoso’s statements, saying it was necessary “to determine their legal significance”.

Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regional leaders called on Rubiales to resign last month but he has refused to step down since the incident, telling an extraordinary general assembly “I will not resign, I will not resign”, and claiming “a social assassination is taking place”.

Football’s world governing body Fifa provisionally suspended Rubiales for 90 days and opened disciplinary proceedings against him.

World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda was sacked on 5 September amid the ongoing scandal.

Before he was sacked, most of Vilda’s coaching staff resigned and 81 players refused to play for Spain in protest at Rubiales’ actions and refusal to quit.

Politicians, footballers and celebrities have spoken out against Rubiales, while protesters gathered at the RFEF headquarters to demand his resignation.

“I owe you 10 billion” – Secret audio of Dr Grace Boadu confirming that she owes boyfriend Bible Nokwafo –

0

The passing of Dr Grace Boadu has brought to light a contentious financial dispute between her family and her boyfriend, Bible Nokwafo, concerning a significant sum of money.

Before her unfortunate demise, Dr. Grace Boadu disclosed to her family that she owed her lover, Bible Nokwafo, a substantial amount of money amounting to 1 million Ghana cedis, equivalent to 10 billion old Ghana cedis.

This revelation comes from a financial transaction between the couple, where Bible Nokwafo provided financial assistance to Dr. Grace Boadu for her real estate project.

The late Dr. Grace Boadu had embarked on a real estate venture but encountered financial difficulties during the project’s execution.

More all-loved videos of Dr Grace Boadu and her alleged husband to be Osofo Bible Nokwafo lands online

In a gesture of love and support, Bible Nokwafo generously loaned her 1 million Ghana cedis to inject into the building projects, under the assumption that they would share in the profits together as partners in the venture.

However, Dr Grace Boadu later received advice from her mother, to clarify to Bible Nokwafo that the Ghc 1 million is a loan and not an investment fund.

Dr. Grace Boadu then recorded a video confirming that the 1 million Ghana cedis was indeed a loan and not an investment.

In the same audio, she told her family to repay Bible Nokwafo the borrowed sum upon her demise, to prevent any potential misunderstandings regarding ownership of the properties in the future.

Since the passing of Dr Grace Boadu, it has been reported that her family has avoided any communication or interaction with Bible Nokwafo, leading to speculation that they may be unwilling to honour the financial obligation owed to him.

ILO’s report on SSNIT not surprising

0

James Klutse Avedzi, the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC), has attributed the depletion of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) reserves to unprofitable investments.

The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) recent report predicts that SSNIT’s reserves will be completely depleted by 2036.

Mr Avedzi finds this disclosure unsurprising and advocates for better supervision of SSNIT’s operations.

In an interview with TV3, he said, “SSNIT continues to enter into investments that aren’t profitable. I wasn’t surprised at the ILO’s report on the reserves of SSNIT depleting. Something must be done about the work of SSNIT.”

According to the ILO’s report, starting in 2029, the total income, including contributions, investment income, and other income, will no longer cover annual expenditures, leading to a decrease in reserves.

The report also indicates that the reserve will be exhausted by 2036.

As per the report, SSNIT will lack the means to pay pensioners and will be compelled to use the reserves, a strategy that will be unsustainable by the specified year.

“The reserve ratio, which is the ratio of the end-of-year reserve over the annual expenditures for the year, moves from 3.4 to 0 between 2021 and 2036.

“This ratio can be interpreted as the number of years during which annual expenditures could be paid by the reserve if there were no contributions, no investment income and no other income,” ILO noted in its report.

However, SSNIT has dismissed the report saying it has enough reserve capable of paying beneficiaries of the scheme as well as fulfilling its financial obligation beyond 2036 contrary to some media reports.

Speaking at a news conference in Accra to clarify various portions of the report, the Chief Actuarial Officer of SSNIT, Joseph Poku, said its outfit provided all the data to ILO as part of requirements to subject its operations to the international body for valuation at least every three years.

Asante Kotoko coach reacts to side’s stalemate with Heart of Lions

0

Prosper Narteh Ogum

Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum has reacted to his side’s draw against Heart of Lions.

The Porcupine Warriors after an intense pre-season were hoping to hit the ground running in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season opener at the Baba Yara Stadium.

However, the Reds were held at home by the Premier League returnees on Sunday.

Speaking after the game, Narteh Ogum praised his players and also reiterated that he is optimistic his players will come good in the course of the season.

“I am not disappointed, I am rather optimistic because if you look at how we played, we had chances that we could have scored and in terms of our defensive orientation, I think we were good and in midfield, we dominated,” he said after the game.

“If you take the outcome of the game, which is the scoreline out, to me, these guys did very well. It is the first game and it was a marvelous performance from the players. I think we have the cohesion, but we lacked the final decision regarding the final pass to the feet of that player that will connect the pass.

“In games like this, Kotoko is a big club and if you look at the fans that came, such moments come and the players are not able to grab it and they begin to feel some nervousness and I think that really affected the final third of the game.

To me, this is our first game and we just came from pre-season and so if a team come from pre-season and played the way they did, I think it is a plus,” he added.

Asante Kotoko will hope to record their first campaign win when they travel to play Bibiani Gold Stars at DUN’s Park on Sunday in the week two games.

But then, don’t forget Olamide had a fiancée, Bukunmi, at the time of the incident.

Those kids are mostly from poor homes, so the deal is done in exchange for poverty amelioration. No wealthy family will release their daughter for marriage at this tender age.

It’s quite unfortunate that the young girl’s future, hopes, aspirations, life, and right to choose have all been taken away from her in such a disgusting manner.

Entrepreneurs must innovate to remain relevant

0

Nana Akwesi Bonsu — CEO of My Story Magazine

A business consultant, Nana Akwesi Bonsu, has challenged entrepreneurs in the country to keep themselves from endeavors that are no longer relevant in today’s dynamic world.

Rather, Mr Bonsu — who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of My Story Magazine — said entrepreneurs must be adaptable with the ability to deliver new products and services, or to build new systems and structures that could strengthen their operational capacities.

Speaking to the media in Accra, Mr Bonsu stated that innovation and technology adoption were no more an option but a must for entrepreneurs.

“Create a niche for your business, adjust to current or future innovations, relearn new inventions, and build up new systems and structures for your businesses.

“Don’t underestimate the tool of technology, and above all have the mental capacity,” he said.

Mr Bonsu said entrepreneurship was not a rosy journey, but instead required tough-mindedness to create an avenue that would help society.

“Nonetheless, mental fortitude, a wealth of knowledge, understanding your essence for the establishment, and having the wisdom to ride your idea are very essential in this instance.

“Amid the current economic crisis and global recession, there is also a place for individuals who have mastered their craft to also survive,” he said.

Govt support

Mr Bonsu urged the government to support entrepreneurs by creating opportunities such as tax exemptions on specific consumable goods and services.

He said there should be a system to financially support business owners to help them to expand their businesses.

He said the government must take deliberate steps to patronise small-scale businesses, especially locally-produced goods and services.

He underlined the need for the development of policies that could attract more investors into the country.

He explained that mentorship for entrepreneurs was now very essential and, therefore, start-ups, and that anyone interested in business must take note to have mentors in their life.

“Individuals who are giants in our industries must also avail themselves to teach upcoming entrepreneurs.

“They shouldn’t see them as a threat or competition, but rather as a medium to pour out their experience to help the upcoming ones become more productive and efficient.

“Partnership, on the other hand, is also key. Most people from our side of the world do not consider partnerships in business. People must come together to create businesses that will profit all. It is in this that we will see growth and expansion,” he said.

Focus

Mr Bonsu’s My Story Magazine is noted to be focused on telling stories and putting the spotlight on entrepreneurs, start-ups and change-makers across Africa.

He said the firm ultimately gives people an opportunity to tap into the brains and experiences of business leaders, start-ups, entrepreneurs, and technical leaders to learn their strategies, their motivation and challenges.

“By telling the stories of individuals and organisations from different perspectives, and from across the entire regions of the continent, we believe it is only by collective action and innovation sharing across the regions that we can help Africa to solve its deepest challenges,” he added.

Pastor Begs Court To Cancel Divorce – Says He Still Loves His Wife

Lucky Omoha, a pastor, is currently going through a divorce case. His wife, Juliet Omoha, filed for divorce because they have not been able to have children and she feels mistreated by her in-laws.

Lucky Omoha has appealed to the Customary Court in Nyanya, FCT, Abuja to not dissolve his marriage because he still loves his wife. He believes that they will be blessed with a child that will not die.

“I still love my wife, I will always love her; even in our childlessness. I have told my wife not to worry that God will bless us with a child that will stay, that will not die.

My wife knows that I love her so much and that I have never supported my parents’ ill-treatment of her,” Omaha said.

Juliet Omoha, the petitioner, was present in court and stated that although her husband never joined his parents in mistreating her over their childless status, he sometimes lashes out at her during misunderstandings. She does not want to continue with the marriage.

The Presiding judge, Doocivir Yawe, has adjourned the matter until Tuesday, May 30, for Judgment.

Sack Kwetey over decadence in NDC comment if you have balls – Anyidoho dares Mahama, Mosquito –

0

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho has proclaimed vindication over his position that the party was suffering moral decadence.

Referencing a recent admission by the General Secretary Fifi Kwetey that the NDC needed to clean its house, Anyidoho suggested that his purported sacking from the party was because of similar calls.

He challenged the current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and leader of the party, Joh Dramani Mahama; to take similar action against Kwetey because Asiedu Nketiah as the then party scribe oversaw the process that led to Anyidoho’s expulsion for anti-party conduct.

“Let the Chairman and the Leader of the NDC dare come out and sack the General Secretary if they have the “balls” to do so,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

His post was accompanied by Kwettey’s speech at the commemorative anniversary of the 31st Revolution that marked the second coming into office of former president Jerry John Rawlings as a military leader in 1981.

“There is real decay and that decay continues to be in the NDC today. So, I don’t want us the NDC to pretend that 31st is simply a day to bash NPP, (the) NPP is not the issue, the issue is bigger than NPP.

“The decay even within the NPP must stop with that blazing fire and that is what this business is about,” Kwetey submitted.

He stressed that unless the NDC rids itself of the internal decay, the 2024 victory will be meaningless.

“It is in vain if we win power only to continue what we see, only to do some of the things that we are seeing and only to claim we are doing less, that is not enough,” he cautioned.

Increase Trade Volumes Among Yourselves “Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto Urges Ghana-Zimbabwe Businesses” |

0

The immediate-past Minister of Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has urged Ghana and Zimbabwe to, as a matter of urgency, scale up trade with each other under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), considering the economic distress they currently experience.

Subscribe
According to him, the impact of the global economic recession on the two countries lent credence to calls for Accra and Harare to find solutions to their own problems.

One such solution, he noted, was to increase trade volumes with each other, since there existed many opportunities that could be explored to achieve that feat.

“This event could not be more timely, occurring at a period when the whole world finds itself in a state of economic distress.

It presents an opportunity for us to find lasting solutions to our challenges. If you look at the share of intra-African exports as a percentage of total African exports, it tells us that internal trade on the continent is a must,” he noted.

Speaking as the guest of honour at the Zimbabwe-Ghana Business Forum which opened in Accra last Monday and is expected to end today, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, who is also a flag-bearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), further noted that the volume of trade among countries on the African continent was too small, compared to the total global trade.

Statistics from the AfCFTA show that trade between Ghana and Zimbabwe stood at just a little over $3 million in 2022.

Africa to increase
Worried about that development, he called for Africa to increase trade among its countries using the framework of the AfCFTA, which was the panacea to resolving some of the challenges faced when trading within the African continent.

He said it was a well-known fact that intra-Africa trade was one of the dreams of the founding fathers of the African Union, a dream which never fully came into fruition in their time.

“It might have taken us decades to get there, but at least progress has been made”, he added.

Dr Afriyie Akoto, who is also a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region, was of the strong conviction that lack of initiative and mere rhetoric had been the bane of many African countries, expressing the belief that with the establishment of the AfCFTA, those challenges could be a thing of the past.

He said there existed significant potential for the two countries could explore to increase the volume of trade among themselves and urged participants at the forum to take very seriously discussions centred on business-to-business (B2B).

The Zimbabwean Ambassador to Ghana, Dr Kufa Edward Chinoza, in his opening remarks expressed the hope that, with initiatives such as the AfCFTA, trade agreement and business linkages through such fora, there would be a change in the current situation.

ZimTrade
He urged ZimTrade and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) to work hand-in-hand and provide the business communities of the two countries with real time data and market intelligence to assist them make informed decisions if they wanted to diversity and explore new markets.

“These initiatives can, indeed, lead to increased trade between our two countries”, said Ambassador Chinoza.

He said intra-Africa trade remained at low levels, averaging below 18 per cent, insisting that there was the need to scale it up, assuring that they, as policymakers, were ever ready to assist in whatever way to increase trade within the continent.

Also speaking at the forum was the AfCFTA Secretary-General, Wamkele Mene.

He told the gathering that trade between Ghana and Zimbabwe was critical for two main reasons; that Zimbabwe was the fifth largest producer of globally sought-after lithium and a significant grain producer on the continent.

Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire combined are the largest producers of cocoa, producing more than 70 per cent of global production.

Zimbabwe produces
“Zimbabwe produces over $200 million worth of excess grain per year, thus the capacity to feed southern Africa and the rest of the continent is there.

This is critical in the face of food insecurity due to geopolitical tensions.

Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire are the largest producers of cocoa.

As such AfCFTA presents an opportunity for you to trade on favourable and preferential terms.

Before AfCFTA, Zimbabwe and Ghana had to trade using the World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.

Exports from each other’s markets would be competing with exports from third-party countries in the markets in Ghana and in Zimbabwe”, he said.

Chris Hughton expects improved performance against USA

Chris Hughton

Ghana coach, Chris Hughton says he expects a positive reaction from his team ahead of their friendly game against the United States of America.

The Black Stars in their first of the two friendly games suffered a 2-0 defeat against Mexico on Sunday dawn to hand Hughton his first defeat.

The four-time African champions will wrap up their October international friendly games on Wednesday dawn when they come up against the USA at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ahead of the game, the 64-year-old says he does not want to end the two games without a win and therefore wants an improved performance from the playing body.

“It is exactly the same message for the players, what we don’t want is to leave this international camp with two poor results. The result of that, is always you are looking for a reaction from the team in the second game [USA] he said.

“If you are able to get the right reaction, which I am quite sure that we will from the team, then it gives you a better possibility of putting in a performance that can get something out of the game in the second game [USA] so what we have to do is to learn from the things you didn’t do so well in the first game, [Mexico],” he added.

A total of four games have been played between Ghana and USA with both sides recording two wins each.

The friendly games form part of Ghana’s preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana, who next month begin World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar (Nov. 13) and Comoros (Nov. 21) before the AFCON in Ivory Coast next year.

I Warned Ningi But He Didn’t Listen — Ndume –

0

Abdul Ningi,

Ali Ndume, Chief Whip of the Senate, says he warned Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central prior to his claim that the 2024 budget was padded by over N3 trillion, but he never listened.

Recall that Ningi, at the Senate on Tuesday, was suspended for three months over his budget padding allegation.

Speaking on the development in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Ndume said, “I sat next to the Senate Leader (Opeyemi Bamidele), he was very angry about what Ningi did, but honestly me too. What he (Ningi) did was wrong because I was involved.

“In the first instance, it started when they said capital project was skewed to the South. The total in that budget that was brought before us by the President was not up to N9 trillion, it was N8.9trn and they are talking of skewed capital project to the South and the total adding up to N15 trillion.

“That N15 trillion is strange, even with the amendment that we made, the capital component of this budget is not up to that.

“I told him he was wrong. I had even warned him when he brought the issue to me. I had told him to get a consultant to analyze the budget. But he refused to listen to me.”

According to Ndume, Ningi was trying to make the 2024 project an ethnic and political issue, which is wrong.

When Ningi first presented the case to him, he told him to provide evidence, which he could not.

He insisted that as a senior member of the Senate, he can attest to the fact that the North was not shortchanged by the South in the budget as claimed by Ningi.

Efya Opens Up About Public Embarrassment by Bullgod’s Comments on ‘Partying with Wizkid’

0

Ghanaian singer Efya recently revealed in an interview on UTV’s ‘Atuu’ with Abeiku her feelings of humiliation caused by Bullgod’s comments regarding her preference for partying with Wizkid over performing on international stages. Bullgod, in a Facebook post a few weeks ago, expressed his disappointment in some Ghanaian musicians, including Efya, for not taking the opportunity to showcase their talents on the global stage.

Reacting to Bullgod’s statement, Efya clarified that she discusses business and music with Wizkid when they are together but chooses not to disclose these details on television. She mentioned that she has a good relationship with Bullgod and believed he could have communicated his concerns privately rather than airing them on social media.

“I know Bulldog; he could have chosen to call me, but he decided to sit on social media and say that to embarrass me,” Efya expressed. She emphasized that her reaction was not to dwell on negativity but to reassure her fans that she is committed to her music career.

In an industry filled with partnerships and controversies, it’s essential for artists to handle criticism with grace and maintain their professional relationships. Efya’s response serves as a reminder that open communication can help resolve issues in the entertainment world and that artists have the right to choose their career paths without public judgment.

Party promoter arrested after 10 die in Uganda New Year’s Eve stampede

0

Kampala, Uganda – Ugandan police said on Monday they had arrested a concert promoter after a stampede at a New Year’s Eve party in the capital Kampala that left 10 people dead, including children.

The party-goers were killed at Freedom City mall in Kampala as revellers thronged a single exit to watch a midnight fireworks show.

Police spokesman Fred Enanga said four other exits had been ordered shut by the promoters and investigators were looking at whether “negligence” was to blame for the loss of life.

“We have so far arrested the promoter of that New Year concert. We are also actively searching for other organisers and promoters,” Enanga told reporters on Monday.

“The revellers had one point of entry and exit. Therefore several victims were trapped and trampled upon through the narrow passage which became a bottleneck for many, mostly juveniles.”

Most of the victims were aged between 10 and 20, police said.

The promoter is well known in Kampala for staging major festis.

In 2009, one person died and three were injured in a stampede at Kampala’s Kansanga amusement park.

More Than 1,500 Married Off By Nigerian State |

0

1,500 women were married off on Friday at a mass wedding organised by a regional government in north-west Nigeria.

The Kano state administration said it sponsored the marriage of widows and new brides to support them in building the foundation of family life and improving social affairs.

The brides were not present at the wedding, only the grooms.

The wedding was among the top campaign promises of the current governor during the pre-election campaign.

For years such a wedding was an annual event, but it was halted by the previous government.

Kano is the second-largest city in Nigeria and the commercial hub of the northern part of the country.

NDC caucus in parliament kicks against Next Gen Infraco 5G deal –

0

The Minority in Parliament has expressed serious concerns over the government’s decision to award a 5G licensing contract to NextGen InfraCo, a company established just a week prior to the contract’s approval.

According to the Minority, the deal lacks transparency and does not serve the country’s best interests.

In a press statement issued on Monday, June 3, and signed by Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the NDC MPs pledged to oppose the deal.

The statement also highlighted similar contracts awarded by the current government that have resulted in a waste of state resources, reinforcing their scepticism about the NextGen InfraCo deal.

The NDC MPs emphasised the need for scrutiny and accountability, assuring the public that they will address the nation in the coming days to shed light on the opacity of the deal and its potential implications for Ghana.

“The regulatory framework and operational modalities and guidelines for this opaque arrangement have not been clearly defined by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, which appears to be in an indecent haste to give away the country’s 5G spectrum for a pittance,” an excerpt of their statement said.

This development follows Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation’s defence of the government’s decision to award the 5G licensing contract to NextGen InfraCo.

The Ablekuma West MP clarified that NextGen InfraCo was specifically established to manage the 5G rollout.

She added that at the time, no other infrastructure companies had the necessary capacity for this project.

The minister further explained that the direct award of the contract to this new company is part of the government’s strategy to overcome previous challenges and expedite the deployment of the 5G network in Ghana.

“This is a special purpose vehicle and once the government took the decision that we will use a neutral infrastructure company to deliver this service, there is no existing neutral infrastructure company that can deliver it at the moment.

“So, it had to be specifically formed for the purpose of delivering this service based on the strategic policies and decisions of the government, and it is borne out of our experiences and that is why we chose not to auction it,” she stated.

The statement did not provide an alternative timeline or resolution for the affected districts.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opens up on Mikel Arteta feud & Arsenal exit –

0

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has accused Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta of lacking humanity over the feud which led to his departure from the Emirates Stadium in 2022.

Aubameyang was the team captain when Arteta arrived and spent two years in the post before a clash over a late return to training saw him stripped of the armband and banished from the squad. He ultimately joined Barcelona on a free transfer on the final day of the January transfer window.

Speaking to Colinterview, Aubameyang revealed his side of the story, taking some of the responsibility while also questioning Arteta’s response to the situation.

“It was during the Covid period and we were playing, I think, Everton,” Aubameyang recalled. “My season wasn’t great, we were struggling in the league and the day before the coach told us: ‘Look, it doesn’t matter if we win or not, you have a day off. But if you want to leave the country, tell us before the match because you have to follow the health safety rules’.

“My mother, a few months before, had a stroke, it was going to be Christmas time so I went to see the coach and I said to him: ‘Coach, I’m coming to see you because I’d like to leave [for the day off], I’m going to go pick up my mother to bring her back for the holidays’. He tells me no problem. He knew very well what had happened, the day it happened he had already given me permission to go see her. So he gives me authorisation and tells me to check with the doctor about the return in relation to Covid.

“I’m going home to Laval, normally I would leave on the day off and return in the evening rather than the morning of training. My mother had medical tests to do, I couldn’t leave in the evening so I left the next morning on training day. Once I got there, I had to take my [Covid] test but in fact I should have done it the day before since I was coming from another country.

“I arrive, the coach finishes his meeting and then he grabs me and he completely tears into me, he shouts at me like I’m crazy. He says: ‘You put a knife in my back. You can’t do that to me given the times we’re going through’. At that moment I tell myself that I’m not going to answer him because it’s going to end angrily. I didn’t go partying. He knows very well the reason for my departure so at that moment I don’t understand why he is lecturing me like this.”

Despite his hope that the situation would blow over, Aubameyang soon realised that Arteta was not prepared to forgive and forget.

The former Arsenal striker continued: “I go home and the doctor calls me and says ‘Tomorrow, the coach doesn’t want you to be there’. I said okay, I knew the next match was coming and I said to myself: ‘Damn, once again everyone is going to talk about me, it’s going to be a mess, this is crazy’. I couldn’t understand it.

“The days pass and the doctor tells me: ‘Look, he doesn’t want you to be with the group anymore, but you will be able to come and train but separately’. I say to myself okay… And then afterwards, he calls me and we have a meeting so he can explain to me that firstly, he’s taking away the captain’s armband, and secondly, I’m no longer training with the group.

“Once again, he explains why he is against me during this period when it was complicated for the club. That I have to be an example and that I couldn’t do that. At that moment, I said: ‘I admit that I have my share of responsibility but the real cause I think you can understand if you are a little bit human. You can understand my move’.

“After that, it was over, I stayed for a month training on my own while waiting for the move away.”

Ghanaian workers among the least productive globally – Prof Adei –

0

Renowned economist, Professor Stephen Adei has conducted a comparative analysis of the productivity levels of workers from Ghana and Togo.

His research findings indicate that Ghanaian workers are among the least productive globally.

Professor Adei emphasized that Togolese workers exhibit higher work quality compared to their Ghanaian counterparts, as per his research.

He noted that employers often prefer Togolese workers due to their superior productivity levels.

“…The Ghanaian worker is one of the least productive workers in the world when they are in Ghana. In fact, was it ten years ago the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences asked me to give a lecture on productivity in Ghana and I found that in Africa given the same conditions, qualifications and everything else, the Ghanaian worker was among the least productive worker in Africa,” the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration said.

He added “To me what shocked me in that research was that the Togolese worker was more productive than the Ghanaian which I wanted to see evidence of until I started looking at Togolese workers in construction in Ghana.

“Their productivity is far superior to Ghanaian workers. Masons, electricians, tailors, and often people think they are Ghanaians because they speak Ewe, but they are not Ghanaians. And some of the construction people look for them because of their quality work,” he stated.

Downsize govt, cut spending to save economy

0

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately downsize his government machinery and cut down on expenditure to build confidence in his commitment to solving the country’s economic problems.

The call by the GPCC follows similar calls by the opposition National Democratic Congress and several civil society organisations who have advised the government to downsize its government to save cost.

According to the GPCC downsizing the government and cutting down on expenditure will demonstrate to Ghanaians that the call for burden sharing is not just all talk but also backed by action.

In a communiqué, the GPCC also called on the government and other stakeholders, to collaboratively establish a national dialogue forum for regular consultations and engagements on pertinent matters of national interest;

“Urgently downsize government machinery and cut down on expenditure to start building confidence about its commitment in solving our economic problems. From the Council’s perspective, it is important that the Government demonstrates a strong sense of burden-sharing to encourage key bondholders to fully accept the exchange voluntarily.

“This should include Government explicitly and verifiably cutting down on its expenditure, including reducing the size of the government, among other areas. This is very critical to encourage buy-in from the general public.”

The GPCC also called on the government to ensure that the Domestic Debt Exchange does not destroy the financial sector.

“Whatever form the DDEP takes, Government should ensure that the financial sector, which is a key pillar of growth for the economy, is not destroyed in the process of the debt exchange. The Council acknowledges the setting up of the financial sector stability fund, as a measure to provide support to the financial sector, but the Council expects to see a clear demonstration that the facility is fully funded for implementation, in order to provide full assurance to the financial sector and the banking community.”

Find details of the communique below:

COMMUNIQUÉ RELEASED BY THE GHANA PENTECOSTAL AND CHARISMATIC COUNCIL (GPCC) ON SOME CURRENT NATIONAL ISSUES

1. PREAMBLE

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has held its 2023 Conference of Heads of Churches and Organizations (CHCO), and the Extra-Ordinary National Delegates Conference at the Pentecost Convention Center (PCC) from the 31st January – 2nd February 2023.

The Conference, among other things, deliberated on pertinent issues prevailing in, and of concern to the nation Ghana and Ghanaians.

As a Council, we are very concerned about recent economic developments in Ghana and the hardship that is currently impacting all Ghanaians, especially the poor and vulnerable groups.

In particular, the very high levels of inflation and currency depreciation are impacting the poor the most, wiping away incomes and wealth and pushing most Ghanaians into extreme poverty and hardship without any clear social safety nets. This is presenting an almost existential threat to the poor and vulnerable.

The GPCC acknowledges that globally, economies are in turmoil and facing various degrees of socio-economic challenges.

The Council particularly recognizes and appreciates the efforts of the Government to contain the situation in Ghana.

These recognisable efforts include the recent staff-level agreement (SLA) reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in December 2022.

We urge the Government to do everything possible to ensure the IMF programme goes to the Board to help rescue the situation and reset the economy.

However, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), worsening macro-economic indicators and its effect on the livelihood of the citizens, the Auditor-General’s 2021 Report which brought to the fore considerable degrees of financial misappropriations, in public sector institutions are among some of the issues which engaged the attention of the Conference.

This communique directed at the Ghana Government, the Church in Ghana and the entire citizenry is part of the key outcomes of the Conference.

· KEY OBSERVATIONS;

(A) DOMESTIC DEBT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (DDEP)

1. The Government of Ghana has targeted the restructuring of domestic debts amounting to GHS137.3 billion in order to access an IMF bail-out programme. This is an attempt to restore Ghana’s credibility on the international financial markets and with the investor community.

2. The Government of Ghana appears not forthcoming with demands to downsize its administrative machinery and to cut down on expenditure as a means of reducing budget deficits and making financial gains to address her indebtedness. It is generally expected that such a move on the part of the government will engender confidence in the citizenry relating to efforts at mitigating the unsustainable debt situation;

3. On the expiration of the 31st January 2023 deadline, the government is now making a coupon rate offer of 10% with a 5 years maturation date for bondholders who are 59 years and below; and 15% with up to 5 years maturation for bondholders who are retirees. The new offer by Government is also intended to reduce losses to bondholders;

4. The Government of Ghana has so far announced agreements with institutional bondholders including banking financial institutions and insurance companies after four deadline extensions, with the most recent being an extension from 31st January 2023 to 7th February 2023. It is evident that Government is having difficulty in reaching the industry benchmark (75% – 80%) of a qualifying majority.

5. The Bank of Ghana has established financial stability support fund of ¢ 15 billion to support financial institutions participating in the debt exchange programme as an incentive to improve financial stability.

6. Public confidence in the financial sector (especially Banking and Insurance) of the economy is being very adversely affected. People appear to be losing confidence in the financial sector and in public investment. Measures will have to be put in place to cushion the effect of the domestic debt restructuring on banking sector institutions and to restore confidence in the sector;

7. While the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme is a precondition for getting the IMF programme, it is clear that the DDEP is facing serious challenges and has resulted in a number of extensions of deadlines. Time is of the essence in these matters, since the delayed appro of the IMF Programme for Ghana by the IMF Board continues to worsen Ghana’s financial position and international credit rating. Time is of the essence in these matters since failure to expedite the DDEP might delay the appro of the Programme for Ghana by the IMF Board. This might further exacerbate Ghana’s economic challenges.

(B) 2021 AUDITOR-GENERAL’S REPORT

1. A total of ¢17.4 billion in financial irregularities have been flagged by the Auditor-General in its latest report submitted to Parliament for the 2021 financial year. The stated amount represents a 36% rise in irregularities compared to that of 2020;

2. The Auditor-General has disclosed that government agencies misappropriated or misapplied ¢10billion of monies mobilised for Covid-19 activities on government budget support;

3. A number of MMDAs and State-Owned-Enterprises (SOEs) have issues to answer in terms of accounting for monies spent and efficiency in the use of public funds;

4. Some of these infractions could have been avoided if the appropriate authorities had enforced existing financial control mechanisms.

(C) GENERAL ECONOMIC SITUATION AND LIVELIHOODS

1. The rather high inflation rate (54% as of December 2022) affects purchasing power and makes the cost of living high for the average Ghanaian.

2. Frequent increases in utility tariffs in the recent past are negatively affecting all sectors and levels of businesses and the socioeconomic livelihoods of the citizens;

3. Youth unemployment is increasing to worrying and unacceptable levels;

(D) ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION

1. There is poor management and proliferation of plastic waste and this has a negative effect on the environment;

2. There is wanton destruction of forests and vegetation cover for illegal mining (galamsey) activities and for charcoal;

3. The pollution of water bodies and destruction of aquatic life which is essential for the livelihood of adjoining communities, by galamsey and related activities;

(E) LEADERSHIP AND POLITICAL GOVERNANCE

1. Political leadership and governance, according to the 1992 Constitution (Article 35 (7) requires succeeding governments to as far as practicable continue and execute projects and programmes commenced by their predecessors.

2. The discontinuance of projects by succeeding governments has over the years been a drain on the national economy and a bane on our political governance.

3. Overly partisan national decision-making processes at the expense of our collective national interest is undermining the unity and cohesion of the nation.

· COMMITMENTS AND REMEDIES

(A) GPCC COMMITS TO SUPPORT IN ADDRESSING THESE ISSUES BY:

1. Availing our platforms to support consultative initiatives aimed at addressing the prevailing national problems, to engender consensus building, unity and peace;

2. Increasing admonition to Reverend Ministers of the Gospel to live modestly and above reproach.

3. Intensify teachings to our members especially those in public service to show the way by imbibing the principles of integrity in the fight against corruption, being mindful of the fact that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.

4. Collaborating with other ecumenical bodies to facilitate a national stakeholder forum that brings to the table professionals and distinguished business practitioners, academia, politicians and other civil society bodies to dispassionately discuss and proffer alternative perspectives and solutions to the current challenges confronting our nation;

5. With the consent of the government and other stakeholders, collaboratively establish a national dialogue forum for regular consultations and engagements on pertinent matters of national interest;

6. Mobilizing the Church and the nation in prayer to seek God’s guidance and help in our governance and development efforts.

(B) GPCC REQUESTS GOVERNMENT TO:

1. Expedite action on the domestic debt exchange program as is being pursued with the individual bondholders and pension fund managers.

2. Continue with the present productive engagements for a more amicable arrangement with respect to the DDEP.

3. Urgently downsize government machinery and cut down on expenditure to start building confidence about its commitment in solving our economic problems. From the Council’s perspective, it is important that the Government demonstrates a strong sense of burden-sharing to encourage key bondholders to fully accept the exchange voluntarily. This should include Government explicitly and verifiably cutting down on its expenditure, including reducing the size of the government, among other areas. This is very critical to encourage buy-in from the general public.

4. Whatever form the DDEP takes, Government should ensure that the financial sector, which is a key pillar of growth for the economy, is not destroyed in the process of the debt exchange. The Council acknowledges the setting up of the financial sector stability fund, as a measure to provide support to the financial sector, but the Council expects to see a clear demonstration that the facility is fully funded for implementation, in order to provide full assurance to the financial sector and the banking community.

5. The Council is concerned that key vulnerable groups (pensioners and individual small savers, among others), are not being adequately protected in this debt exchange. The Council will encourage the government to ensure the financial sector, which has been restructured more recently, and vulnerable groups are fully protected in the design of the debt exchange in order to limit the burden on such groups.

6. Work with the relevant law enforcement agencies to retrieve all Covid-19 funds that the Auditor General’s 2021 Report cited as being unaccounted for or misapplied.

7. Collaborate with other stakeholders and support calls to organize a non-partisan national consultative forum to dispassionately discuss and gather ideas for addressing the prevailing socio-economic and environmental challenges;

8. Review all major Government flagship programmes in the light of the current financial challenges as a means of contributing to resolving the difficulties the country is currently facing;

9. The Auditor General should exercise its authority to disallow any item of expenditure which is contrary to law and to surcharge the disallowed expenditure on the person(s) responsible for incurring or authorizing it.

10. Attorney General should take urgent steps to prosecute all persons against whom allegations of corruption and malfeasance have been made to serve as a deterrent to others.

4 CONCLUSION

It is the view of the GPCC 2023 Conference of Heads of Churches and Organizations (CHCO) that the economy of Ghana is presently in dire straits.

The government cannot approach the resolution of the current economic situation in a business-as-usual manner.

Every effort must be made to carry the citizens along in the decision-making process.

This will promote confidence in our governance architecture and ensure that every stakeholder commits to contributing to the solution.

Indeed, the role of government is to work for the interest of the citizenry and the State.

Policies of governments should promote the good of the citizenry rather than merely for the political party of the government.

Governments should not make the national interest subordinate to the interest of a political party.

May God bless our homeland Ghana; and make our nation great and strong!!!

Apostle Eric Nyamekye

Court Rescinds CID Boss, Another Bench Warrant

0

A High Court in Accra has rescinded a bench warrant issued for the arrest of the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Director of Legal Affairs of the Ghana Police Service.

This followed an appearance by Superintendent of Police Sylvester Asare before the court to apologise for the absence of both senior police officers on previous occasions  in a contempt of court case initiated against the police.

Superintendent Asare also informed the court that the police have released the vehicle at the centre of contempt proceedings to the applicant as a show of good faith and a measure to purge themselves of contempt.

On April 15, 2024, the court presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo gave the order after the two senior officers failed to take three opportunities given them to appear before the court in a contempt of court case initiated by Sureword Global Outreach  against the law enforcement agency.

The applicant had initiated the contempt of court application against the respondents following their failure to release a vehicle with registration number GN-2925-20 to the applicant as ordered by the Achimota District Court.

The Achimota District Court on January 29, 2024, ordered for the release of the vehicle which was impounded by the police following an application filed by Sureword Global Outreach.

The entity later filed an application for contempt before the High Court and averred that the Respondents have blatantly refused to release the said vehicle to it despite several demands for the release of the vehicle.

But the respondents failed to show up in court on two occasions and counsel for the applicant, Abraham Arthur yesterday moved the motion for contempt.

Appearing before the court yesterday, Superintendent Asare rendered an unqualified apology to the court on behalf of the CID boss and the Director of Legal Affairs for the inability to appear before the court which led to the issuance of the bench warrant.

He assured the court that it was not the intent of the respondents to disregard the orders of the court and explained that their absence was due to a mix-up.

He said the respondent only got wind of the matter after it was carried in the media and he immediately called counsel for the applicant into his office and the matter has been resolved, resulting in the release of the vehicle.

Abraham Arthur, counsel for the applicant confirmed to the court that the vehicle has been released to the applicant and commended the court for taking the bold step to issue the bench warrant against the senior police officers.

Justice Lydia Osei Marfo said there was incontrovertible evidence before the court that the police were served with the orders of the court for them to appear.

She said an institution like the police should strive to uphold the rule of law at all times, indicating that the court would not hesitate to call them to order if they fail to uphold the rule of law by disrespecting the orders of the court.

She subsequently rescinded the bench warrant but indicated that “it is hoped that this occurrence will not happen again.”

Deputy Lands Minister tours Ankobra River

0

The current state of the Ankobra River. INSET: George Mireku Duker (middle) leading the tour of the Ankobra River

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Mines, George Mireku Duker, has noted that the return of the Ankobra River and other water bodies to purity status is a reflection of the strides made by the government to fight illegal mining.

He said the progress made in improving the turbidity level of the waterbodies was indicative that the anti-galamsey fight was yielding results.

Speaking after the tour of the Ankobra River, which is fast regaining its clean status, Mr Mireku Duker commended the various stakeholders for their respective roles in the fight against illegal mining.

He maintained that the government would not take its foot off the pedal but would press on with the measures that had resulted in the gains made so far.

River wardens

Mr Mireku Duker noted that the training and deployment of river wardens to compliment the Operation Halt II task force was another laudable initiative by the government that had contributed significantly to the liberation of waterbodies from galamsey operations.

The deputy minister urged all individuals, especially chiefs, metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) and the public to join forces with the government in its bid to protect the waterbodies.

The deputy minister reiterated the government’s determination to ban small-scale mining, and expressed the hope that the government through the Community Mining Scheme and other innovations would transform the small-scale mining sector.

“We should take full responsibility for protecting Ghana’s river bodies. We have roles to play, including MMDCEs, and we must all commit to protecting our waterbodies,” Mr Mireku Duker said.

“There are suggestions for the government to close down small-scale mining activities but we are aware of the number of job opportunities created in the small-scale mining sector,” he stated.

Local assemblies

The DCE for Ellembelle District, Kwasi Bonzo, said the people of Ellembelle would not sit down and watch others destroy their livelihoods.

The DCE for Nzema East, Dorcas Amoah, commended the government for the Community Mining Scheme in the area, revealing that many lives had been impacted positively by the innovative mining scheme.

NDC petitions Speaker on missing BVDs at EC

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin about the missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

The revelation of the disappearance of these essential electoral tools, as disclosed by Minority Leader Mr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has triggered significant concern both in public discourse and on social media platforms.

Responding decisively to these developments, the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) has launched an internal investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the missing equipment.

The call for a thorough inquiry gained traction following the admission by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on April 9, 2024, confirming the theft of the biometric devices.

In a proactive move, the NDC convened a major press conference on April 15, 2024, to address the issue, emphasizing the potential ramifications on the upcoming December general elections.

After extensive discussions during a meeting on April 16, 2024, the FEC resolved to escalate the matter to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.

In a formal correspondence to the relevant bodies, the FEC has requested support in conducting a comprehensive investigation into the disappearance of the equipment.

The NDC has expressed its readiness to collaborate and provide technical assistance, including deploying a specialized IT team to aid in the investigative process.

The primary objective behind the NDC’s call for an investigation is to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process leading up to the December elections.

The statement underscored the necessity of conducting a transparent and thorough investigation to uphold the principles of free and fair elections in Ghana.

Nora Häuptle reacts to Black Queens 7-0 win

0

Nora Häuptle

Black Queens head coach, Nora Häuptle has expressed her satisfaction following her side’s impressive win over Rwanda in the 2024 CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Goals from Doris Boaduwaa, Princella Adubea, and Alice Kusi and a brace each from Evelyn Badu and Anastasia Achiaa ensured that Ghana recorded the win in the first leg of the qualifiers at the Kigali Pele Stadium on Wednesday.

Ghana will host Rwanda in the second leg at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 26 at the Accra Sports Stadium for a place in the second round of the qualifiers.

However, Huaptle believes there are a few details the team must adjust to despite the massive first-leg win over Rwanda.

“A 7-0 good win against Rwanda, we are quite satisfied. We scored so many goals and kept a clean sheet against them,” she said after the game.

“It was not easy in the game during some circumstances, but a good team can always go through some bad circumstances. The girls like to play on Astroturf, so it was good for the girls. So, all in all, I am quite satisfied, but I still think there are little details to be worked on and need to adjust before our next game in Accra against Rwanda on Tuesday, September 26” she added.

The Black Queens under Nora Hauptle is yet to concede defeat in six games since taking charge of the team early this year.

NPP presidential primaries: Akufo-Addo wishes Joe Ghartey well

0

President Nana Akufo-Addo has wished Joe Ghartey well in the upcoming New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race.

Mr. Ghartey, New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for the Essikado-Ketan Constituency and former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice on 13th January 2023, paid a courtesy call on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House to officially inform him of his intention to contest in the NPP Presidential Primary slated for later this year.

The President in a discussion with Mr Ghartey said he saw his role as ensuring a fair playing field.

According to the President, he was prepared to support anyone who emerged victorious in the primaries.

The President, however, cautioned that the campaign should be conducted with decency.

The President emphasized that it was his desire to ensure that NPP retains power in 2025 and beyond.

On his part, Mr Ghartey thanked the President for the confidence he reposed in him during his first term of office when he found him worthy to serve as the Minister for such a critical Ministry as Railways Development.

Mr Ghartey assured the President that he and his team will conduct themselves in decency during the campaign for the flagbearership position and promised to work very hard for the party to retain power beyond 2024.

Mr Ghartey made it clear that he would not sit idle and that he would take immediate action if any member of his team goes wayward and starts attacking others.

He thanked the President for taking time of his busy schedule to meet with him and wished he and the government well.

Bruno Fernandes reveals how he’s helping Man Utd’s young players –

0

Bruno Fernandes has revealed how he helps younger Manchester United players deal with criticism of their performances.

The Red Devils often face intense media scrutiny due to the size of the club and the expectations on the team.

Speaking in an interview withTNT Sports, Fernandes discussed the need for senior players to help young prospects “learn” from poor showings.

“I think for young players when they come through, it’s easier in the beginning but it gets hard when they start doing something really good because as soon as they get some game where it’s not going so well they’re going to get the criticism,” he said.

“They have to deal with that and I think us as experienced players, senior players, we have to help them on that and make sure they understand that it’s not everything bad when [things] go wrong and it’s not everything perfect when it goes good.

“It’s not only on football, you always try to help everyone that you know. I’m a father now so my daughter, for example, goes to gymnastics and sometimes she wins and sometimes she doesn’t get onto the podium and you have to make her understand that some days you win and some days you learn.”

United players have come under fire for their performances throughout the 2023/24 campaign thanks to their nine defeats in all competitions already. Results have improved in the Premier League in recent weeks however, with enjoying three wins on the bounce without conceding a goal.

Key to their most impressive outing of the season so far, a 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday, were the performances of young players Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. The former scored a stunning overhead kick, while latter earned rave reviews for his showing in what was his first ever start for the Red Devils.

United fans will be hoping for similarly impressive performances from the pair when they face off against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Boniface Saddique reacts to viral campaign poster

0

former MP for Madina

Former Madina Member of Parliament (MP), Boniface Abu-Bakar Saddique, has urged his supporters to disregard a flyer on social media, suggesting his intent to contest the 2024 elections on the ticket of Alan Kyerematen’s ‘Movement for Change’.

In an interview with Classfmonline, Alhaji Boniface clarified that the flyer does not align with his political aspirations.

He has therefore encouraged his supporters not to give it any credence.

The former Minister for Inner-Cities and Zongo Development said he is aware of the individuals responsible for the misinformation and has vowed that their identities will be revealed soon.

Alhaji Boniface attributed the “misleading” flyer to internal manoeuvres by certain factions within the Movement for Change.

Denying any interest in contesting the Madina seat, he emphasised his commitment to broader aspirations, stating, “The aim of every soldier is to become a General. We have gone past the status of an MP.”

Alhaji Boniface reassured his supporters that his focus extends beyond parliamentary representation, expressing confidence in their understanding and loyalty.

The DoJ statement dated February 21, 2024, read in part: “Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the guilty plea today of MONA FAIZ MONTRAGE for her role in laundering the proceeds of a series of romance scams.”

Meanwhile, Hajia4Reall’s team have reacted to the development via a statement shared on her Instagram page hours after the guilty plea was published.

They explained that she voluntarily flew from Heathrow to JFK in May 2023 to face the criminal case in the Southern District of New York. The statement asserted that her plea does not define her as a person and is not reflective of the individual she is today.

She expressed gratitude for the support of her fans, family, and legal representatives throughout the process.

“In May 2023, Ms. Montrage voluntarily boarded the flight from Heathrow to JFK to face the criminal case in the Southern District of New York.

“At that time, she took the first step to closing that chapter of her life. Today, she took responsibility for her bank accounts being used to receive funds from illicit conduct that ended in 2019. Ms. Montrage’s plea does not define her as a person and is not reflective of the individual she is today.

“Ms. Montrage is thankful for the support of her fans, family, and legal team throughout this process,” the statement said.

Don’t attempt to rig 2024 elections

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned the Electoral Commission (EC), against attempts to manipulate the 2024 general elections.

The NDC vowed to scrutinise and reveal any endeavours by the EC to subvert the integrity of the electoral process.

These remarks from the NDC come in response to the EC’s acknowledgement of errors made in the initial release of figures during the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise. The EC subsequently corrected these errors and provided accurate figures for the different regions.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, May 16, 2024, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiave Kwetey, contends that the mistakes were “utterly avoidable.”

He warned, “Simple arithmetic, accurately summing the regional figures from the 16 regions, would have clearly demonstrated to the EC that their numbers were erroneous. Such mistakes are utterly avoidable. Why must Ghana’s Electoral Commission be reduced to an ‘Error Commission’?

“The EC must distance itself from any intentions of rigging and be warned: any attempt to undermine the electoral process will be rigorously challenged and exposed.”

The NDC General Secretary asserted that the EC’s shuffling of categories is “transpositional rigging”.

“On May 12, 2024, the Electoral Commission issued a press statement acknowledging erroneous figures previously released and attempted corrections. However, they claimed the total number of registered voters over the four days remained unchanged. This situation exemplifies what we term “transpositional rigging,” where figures are shuffled between categories without affecting the overall total. The assertion by the EC that these errors in regional figures did not impact the total count is patently misleading.”

Mr Kwetey further issued a firm notice to the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission that the 2024 elections will not be business as usual.

“Ladies and gentlemen, with this press conference, we are issuing a firm notice to the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission: the 2024 elections will not be business as usual! We are also here to declare unequivocally that any attempt by the EC to violate CI 127, which governs the conduct of the general elections, will be met with resolute resistance from us. We will not stand idly by while the EC undermines the time-tested electoral processes that are well recognised and respected by all stakeholders,” he pointed out.

He charged the EC to approach the handling of electoral figures with the utmost seriousness.

“It is imperative that the EC approaches the handling of electoral figures with the utmost seriousness, as these numbers are fundamental to the integrity of the elections. No voter should be disenfranchised due to careless errors,” Fifi Kwetey stated.

NPP has failed to protect experienced MPs

0

The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim Central, Kwame Ayimadu-Antwi, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its alleged failure to protect experienced MPs within the majority caucus.

Ayimadu-Antwi, who is currently engaged in a highly competitive race for his seat with Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurial and Innovation Programme, also expressed concern over the departure of 18 experienced MPs, including Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu, who have opted not to seek re-election in the upcoming NPP Parliamentary Primaries.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News Parliamentary Correspondent, Nii Ayikwei Okine, Mr Ayimadu-Antwi suggested that the NPP should have emulated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by protecting experienced members within the caucus.

“Once you stay in Parliament for long, you get to know the law. Look at what the NDC is doing, they protected all the good materials in the party and I thought that the NPP would follow or copy the example of the NDC but I am not seeing that here.

“We have a whole constituency secretary orchestrating a diabolic plan to remove a peaceful member of Parliament,” Mr Anyimadu-Antwi said.

Asked what the NPP should have done to protect experienced MPs, Mr Anyimadu-Antwi responded, “I think that as a democratic party what we can do is to have a very fair and transparent election and with that, the experienced ones will come back to parliament.”

Mr Ofosu Nkansah was on Wednesday, January 10, arrested by the Special Prosecutor for allegedly using funds from the NEIP to fund his campaign.

Felix Amakye, the New Patriotic Party’s Asante Akim Central constituency secretary, had, in an Eyewitness News interview on Citi FM, accused the Asante Akim Central MP of reporting the NEIP CEO to the OSP, a claim the latter vehemently denied.

“I have no clue about what the secretary is alleging, and it is about time for us to do the elections, and the primaries are still around the corner. This is not a do-or-die affair. The secretary has taken sides with one of the contenders and has been speaking passionately, and there is pain in the constituency speaking to delegates.

“If you are talking about reporting anybody to the OSP, I have no idea, but he [Felix Amakye] is on record saying that my preferred candidate has been paying GH¢500,000 and promised to pay GH¢1 million to people, and he said these things on Facebook,” Anyimadu-Antwi explained.

We’re only painting new public basic schools blue and white

0

The Ministry of Education has refuted recent claims indicating a government proposal to change the uniforms of public school students.

Dispelling these rumours, the Ministry has officially stated that there are no plans to change the uniforms across all public schools, nor any initiatives to repaint existing school facilities.

Kwasi Kwarteng, speaking on behalf of the Ministry, underscored that the current initiative exclusively focuses on newly constructed schools.

The aim of that, according to him, is to enhance their visual appeal and bolster public confidence in the quality of public basic education.

“Contrary to the reports, the Ministry of Education isn’t changing uniforms for all public schools. Neither is the Ministry repainting existing ones.

“The initiative focuses on newly built schools, aiming to uplift their appearance and enhance public confidence in public basic schools.

“Similar to senior high schools, junior high schools may have options for uniforms, but it doesn’t imply a widespread change. The emphasis is on enhancing the aesthetic of new school facilities, not altering existing ones,” he stated in a brief statement.

Mr Kwarteng’s comment is in contradiction to the Education Minister’s disclosure during a forum titled ‘The Free SHS story’ in Accra on Tuesday, April 23, that the brown and yellow uniforms would be replaced.

Dr. Adutwum further revealed that this initiative is one of many aimed at revitalizing basic education in the country and making it more appealing.

“We are switching to blue and white. We are painting all the schools to give them an attractive outlook. This is the transformation Ghana deserves and it is coming.”

He also announced that the brown and yellow uniforms would be replaced.

“We are changing the uniforms of public basic schools in the country. The yellow and brown that you see now, you will see no more. Reformation is coming to a community near you, and you will see it.”

Charles Opoku wins NPP’s Assin North primary

0

Charles Opoku has won the New Patriotic Party’s internal election in the Assin North constituency. He won with 397 votes against Fredrick Amoah Kyei who got 136 votes.

Opoku was confident of victory before the election, which was held on June 6, 2023. He said that the good works he had undertaken in the constituency would help him win the primary.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of colluding with the NPP to insert the name of an unqualified NPP parliamentary candidate, who happened to be Charles Opoku.

However, the EC denied the claims in a statement, asserting that it had not received any such request from the NPP to transfer any person’s vote.

Opoku will face the NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson in the by-election scheduled for June 27.

National executives of the NPP, led by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, have thrown their support behind the winner.

Ahmednasir Moves to the EACJ, Demands Sh200 Million in Damages Following Supreme Court Ban

0

Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has initiated legal proceedings at the East African Court of Justice in Arusha, Tanzania, seeking to overturn a decision that barred him and his law firm employees from appearing before the Supreme Court of Kenya.

Ahmednasir has filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General on behalf of the Government of Kenya, demanding an order to compel Attorney General Justin Muturi to reverse the pronouncement made by the Supreme Court. He argues that the decision by the Justice Martha Koome-led court violated his rights to fair administrative action, access to justice, and a fair trial.

The Senior Counsel additionally accuses the State of violating his “universally accepted fundamental right to work.”

“What they did was unfair. The effect of the ban affects my right to earn a living,” he submitted.

As a result, Ahmednassir is also pursuing Kes.200 million in damages, representing fees lost from cases he had previously handled before the Supreme Court.

The advocate alleges that the Supreme Court did not adhere to any legal framework in its pronouncement.

“That this Honorable Court be pleased to award damages of Kshs. 200,000,000.00 or other sums to the Applicant being the fees that the Applicant forfeited for cases he had conduct of before the Supreme Court,” the Senior Counsel stated.

The Grand Mullah is also challenging the action taken by the Apex court to banish him for an unspecified period.

EC sets date for voters’ register update

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set May 7-27, 2024 for updating the voters’ register ahead of the December general elections.

This, according to the EC, is to allow those who just turned 18 to have their names captured in the voters’ register.

People who are above 18 but have yet to register for a voter’s ID card also have the opportunity to do so during this window.

Deputy Chairman, Operations at the Commission, Samuel Tettey who made this known during a May Day Forum by Organised Labour indicated that, the various political parties have been made aware of this development.

“Voting registration is often the most complex and expensive component of the electoral process, and it involves identifying which citizens are eligible to vote and producing a list of register of voters for use on polling day.

“Often a contested process and if wrong, they comprise the entire election process, so the voters’ register plays an important role in securing a very successful election” he said.

Mr Tettey added that an exhibition of the voters’ registration will be subsequently done to allow for corrections of names or other details.

Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen, has been named African Footballer of the Year after beating Mohamed Salah to the award at a ceremony in Marrakech on Monday, with compatriot Asisat Oshoala winning the top prize in the women’s category.

Osimhen, 24, netted 26 goals as he helped Napoli to a surprise triumph in Serie A last season and was the leading scorer in Italy’s top division.

Egypt’s Liverpool forward Salah and Morocco’s Paris Saint-Germain right-back Achraf Hakimi were the other two final nominees, but Osimhen claimed the prize to become the first Nigerian winner since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

“It is a dream come true. I have to thank everybody who has helped me on this journey and all Africans who have helped to put me on the map despite my faults,” Osimhen said.

Morocco won National Team of the Year in the men’s category after their thrilling run to the World Cup semifinals in Qatar, while their manager Walid Regragui won Coach of the Year.

Nigeria’s Barcelona forward Oshoala was the women’s African Footballer of the Year for a record sixth time, having battled injury to help her side to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where they took England to penalties.

Nigeria took home the trophy for National Team of the Year, but South Africa’s Desiree Ellis won women’s Coach of the Year for the fourth time in succession.

Hotpot Restaurant Launches Hair Washing Service for Loyal Customers

0

A HaiDiLao restaurant in Wuxi, China, has gone viral for launching a shampooing service for loyal customers who want to get the smell of food out of their hair after a meal.

Enjoying a bowl of tasty hotpot is usually an enjoyable experience, but carrying the smell of the food with you in your hair for hours or even days, not so much. Luckily, if the pilot program of one popular hotpot restaurant chain proves successful, hotpot enjoyers across China won’t have to worry about their hair smelling like a kitchen anymore. HaiDiLao, China’s largest hotpot restaurant chain, recently launched a shampooing service at one of its restaurants in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. The hair salon-like experience is only available to loyal customers who accumulate enough loyalty points, called ‘Lao coins’, by spending enough money at HaiDiLao locations.

Photos shared on Chinese social media show that the hair-washing facilities at the HaiDiLao restaurant in Wuxi rival those at professional hair salons, and judging by the testimonies of people who have already tried the service, they really are worth every one of the required 200 Lao coins. Customers have a variety of different shampoos to choose from and get to enjoy a relaxing head massage while a professional beauty expert goes to work on their hair. The whole experience takes about 20 years, hair drying included.

Every yuan spent at a HaiDiLao restaurant is equivalent to 1 Lao coin, so they are pretty easy to accumulate. However, because the service is in the testing phase, it hasn’t been marketed at all so there haven’t been many takers. However, after photos of the restaurant’s hair salon went viral, it already started getting requests for reservations, and we might see it adopted by other restaurants as well.

While having the smell of food removed from your hair after a meal sounds like an excellent idea, it is apparently part of a wider pivot into the beauty service industry by the giant hotpot chain. In the past, HaiDiLao restaurants started offering manicures, pedicures, and makeup services as a way of attracting new business. Who knows what they’ll come up with next?
