The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has picked forms to contest the Ayawaso Central Constituency seat in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

The three-time Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso Central Constituency, who also doubles as the Greater Accra Regional Minister, will be contested by the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP, Moses Abor.

The spokesperson for a group of polling station executives, who picked the nomination forms on behalf of Henry Quartey, Bennett Larbi, outlined his achievements in the Ayawaso Central Constituency.

“We decided to come and pick Honourable Henry Quartey’s form for him because he has done a massive job. It is unprecedented. If you come to the constituency, all the major roads are now asphalted… We have never experienced what Honourable Henry Quartey has done before.”

“So we think he deserves to be given more chance, that is why the polling station executives will not allow him to come and pick the forms; we have done that for him. We are waiting for when the time comes; the filing fee too, we will pay… He has done a good job. No regional minister has done that before,” he stated.

Port Harcourt-Aba Train Service To Begin Operations In April – FG

Port Harcourt-Aba Train Service To Begin Operations In April – FG

The Federal Government, on Friday, announced a postponement in the commencement of train services on the crucial Port Harcourt to Maiduguri rail line.

The delay marks a shift from the originally planned launch at the end of March, signalling a temporary setback in the execution of one of the key infrastructural projects under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The Minister for Transportation, Saidu Alkali, disclosed the revised schedule during an inspection visit to the site in Port Harcourt.

According to him, the delay was necessitated by unforeseen challenges encountered by the contractors responsible for the project’s execution.

Despite expressing dissatisfaction with missing the initial deadline, the Minister conveyed confidence in the project’s progress and the revised timeline for its completion.

Alkall said, “This is the second time I am in Port Harcourt for the inspection of the rail line since I assumed office as the Minister of Transportation.

“They gave us March for commencement of operation, but am sure while they were doing the inspection there were some observations, and because of exigencies and technicalities of the work, it has been extended to April, because March is already 29 today.

“They had given us a definite commitment that by April, they will be able to put Port Harcourt to Aba into use, and it is not only Port Harcourt to Aba alone, I am trying also to get the commitment of how soon they can link the rail line to Port Harcourt Port and also Onne Port, so that we would be able to start from the two seaports to Aba.

“Not really that I am not satisfied with the level of work done, but you know when somebody has given you a deadline, and the deadline didn’t really work, of course you will be dissatisfied with the failed deadline he gave you ab-initio. But if somebody promises you March and is able to deliver in April, I think you can manage with that.”

0

Health Policy Consultant and Former Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah

The Director of Elections and IT for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Omane Boamah, is confident former President, John Mahama will win the 2024 general elections against Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Boamah argues that Dr. Bawumia’s performance as the Head of the Economic Management Team (EMT) falls short of Mr. Mahama’s.

In a Facebook post on Monday, November 6, he emphasized that Dr. Bawumia doesn’t measure up to the former President in any assessment.

Dr. Boamah, a medical doctor and politician, concluded by highlighting Mr Mahama’s “undeniable” track record.

“Let me add that the uploaded infographic shows the difference between the superior competence of NDC under Mahama’s Presidency and the gross incompetence of the so-called ‘Solid [NPP] Economic Management Team’ led by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia under Akufo-Addo.”

“John Dramani Mahama has an impeccable track record as Vice President and Head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team (EMT).”

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was on Saturday, November 4 elected to lead the NPP after a keenly contested presidential primary.

In his victory speech, he called on his fellow contenders and party members to join forces to work together to achieve the NPP’s ambition of ‘breaking the 8.’

NPP Welcomes Adwoa Safo’s Apology

0

Sarah Adwoa Safo

The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayesu Ntim says the apology offered by Dome-Kwabenya MP, Adwoa Safo for her long absence in Parliament was in order given her role as a member of the party.

The chairman, who spoke in an interview on Oman FM on Tuesday, said he believes the MP has regretted her actions and therefore did what was required of her.

“Adwoa Safo’s apology is in order; I really support her objective because she knows the NPP is the only party she belongs to. So, she is doing what is expected of her, I mean the apology and all that,” he stated.

Mr. Ntim, however, said that Adwoa Safo’s return to Parliament largely depends on her constituents.

“If the constituents accept her to be an MP once again despite all that has gone on, I as Chairman and the rest of the party leadership will back her with our spirits to become an MP.

“So, her fate rests in the hands of Dome-Kwabenya delegates, from polling station to the constituency level,” he added.

The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, in a video posted on Facebook last week, apologised to the NPP and the constituents for her long absence from Parliament.

The MP, who said her actions were as a result of some personal challenges she was facing at the time, expressed regret and asked to be forgiven.

“It was not my intention to disrespect you. There was a lot going on in my life and family. I’m using this medium to plead for your forgiveness in the name of God,” she said.

Adwoa Safo, in the video, also apologised to President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Chief of Staff, parliamentary leadership, among several others in the party.

14 died at Korle Bu over supply shortage between May and September – Patients

0

The Renal Patients Association of Ghana, comprised of individuals with kidney conditions, has disclosed that fourteen of its members passed away between May and September while at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Association attributed this to a shortage of consumables at the facility, resulting in a limitation of dialysis services to only emergency cases.

During a press conference held in Accra, Michael Asante, a patient and member, expressed how this situation has instilled constant fear of death among many of them.

Mr Asante explained that the unit has been closed to outpatients since 22nd May 2023.

“Up to date, patients have gone through turbulent times as we struggle to finance our dialysis treatment at private dialysis centres across the city. Unfortunately, during this shutdown period, we have lost about 14 of our friends, and patients with EFRD and this has left us in constant fear for our tomorrow,” he said on Monday, October 2.

This follows the outcry that followed reports of increased the cost of dialysis per session for persons with kidney conditions by over 100% at the hospital.

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital earlier blamed the high cost of taxation for the recent increase in the cost of dialysis.

Subsequently, the Chief Executive of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah indicated that the price hike for kidney dialysis at the hospital was just a proposed amount and has not been implemented yet.

According to him, before treatment prices are increased and approved, they must go through certain channels. This increment had not even gone through those channels before it became public.

Korle-Bu

Speaking on JoyNews, Dr. Opoku Ware also noted that, the notice had not reached the Chief Executive Office yet, implying that he himself was not even aware of it.

But the members of the Renal Patients Association of Ghana are contesting this assertion.

They say the hospital was still charging the new amount of GHs765 contrary to claims of the CEO that the new charge has not been implemented.

“I went there on Thursday and I was told that in there system they still have new price,” one of them, Kojo Baffour told JoyNews.

Mahama jibes Akufo-Addo over Ekumfi’s neglect comments

0

Former president and presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has taken issues with President Akufo-Addo for the latter’s recent statement suggesting intentional neglect of development in the Ekumfi constituency.

Mr. Mahama criticised the President’s remarks, deeming them “unfortunate” and highlighting what he sees as a tendency for the President to make partisan statements.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Mahama reminded President Akufo-Addo of his constitutional responsibilities outlined in Article 36, clause 2(d) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

The president said he ignored the development needs of Ekumfi because the people voted out his parliamentarian, a claim Mr. Mahama describes as “most unfortunate.”

“President Akufo-Addo has a penchant for making such partisan statements, as we witnessed recently during his visit to flood victims in Mepe. His actions contradict the oath he swore as President to do justice to all manner of persons.”

“Let me also remind him of Chapter Six of our constitution, specifically Article 36, clause 2(d),” he posted on X.

President Akufo-Addo has disclosed that his government deliberately overlooked development in Ekumfi because the residents voted Francis Ato Cudjoe out of Parliament in the 2020 elections.

The president expressed dissatisfaction with the voting pattern in Ekumfi during an interaction with traditional leaders from the constituency at the Jubilee House.

President Akufo-Addo said despite appointing Ato Cudjoe as Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture to bring development to the area, the constituents voted him out, which he was not pleased with.

“Ato Cudjoe was your MP and I made him a Deputy Minister and you voted him out in the last elections and because of that, I did not pay attention to development in your area, I have to be honest with you but since you have brought it up I will pay attention to it,” the President said.

Nevertheless, President Akufo-Addo’s comments have faced criticism, with many expressing the view that they are unnecessary and unbecoming of a presidential figure.

Exotic Bubu Gowns for Owambe Parties

0

There are a few possible courses of action, one of which involves going to an Owambe celebration dressed in a Bubu gown. If you attend any Owambe celebration dressed in a Bubu gown, whether it’s an evening party or a soiree event, you have the potential to leave everyone in awe. Your attractiveness, as well as your elegance and class, would both be enhanced by the fact that you wore these garments.

This post features not just some of the stunning gowns that Nigerian fashion designer Aduke Ade has been spotted wearing but also various types of attire that are appropriate for an Owambe celebration. Aduke Ade has been seen wearing a lot of magnificent Bubu outfits.

1. Chiffon polka dot Bubu gown

The gorgeous gown that Aduke Ade wore in her role as Aladuke is an example of an outfit that women of any colour may wear to look fantastic. You can choose to have your gown styled in one of three different ways: a strip and dot combo, a three-step, or a free style.

When worn in conjunction with this dress style, fashionable accessories such as handbags, sunglasses, jewellery, and wigs can be worn to enhance one’s appearance and make one appear more attractive.

2. An outfit modelled after Bubu’s signature aesthetic

Particularly if you are donning a Bubu gown, you have the option of adding a flare to your outfit in order to give it a more distinctive and attractive appearance. If you wear a straight-cut gown and creatively cinch your waist with a belt, you can give the appearance of having a beautiful flare.

3. a garment by Bubu that has a floral pattern and was designed by her

Before beginning to build the Bubu gown, it is essential to give careful consideration to the colour of the fabric you will be using. It is my proposal that you make use of the flowery printed materials in order to generate a Bubu gown design that is more alive and appealing. You can do this by following the instructions in the previous paragraph.

4. Accessorize your look with a choker and dress in the manner of Bubu.

You have the option of enhancing the overall quality of your appearance by accessorizing this Bubu gown with an eye-catching neck tie in order to appear unusual and to make sure that you stand out at every occasion that you attend.

5. a cloak embroidered with cord lace and Bubu

You will have the ability to manufacture these lace dresses that were inspired by Aduke Ade by making use of superb and expensive components like lace.

We are appreciative of your likes, comments, shares, and following; you can count on us to keep you informed.

Arsenal & Tottenham scout teenage star –

0

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur both had scouting presences at Royal Antwerp’s Champions League win over Barcelona this week to watch Arthur Vermeeren in action, 90min understands.

Vermeeren broke into the Antwerp team aged just 17 last season and played a significant role as the club secured a first Belgian title in 66 years. Now 18, the midfielder has gone from strength to strength in recent months and has caught the attention of many big clubs.

90min understands that keeping tabs on Vermeeren was the main purpose of scouts representing Arsenal and Tottenham being at the Bosuilstadion in the far north of Belgium. The pair of Premier League rivals have already been watching the teenager closely all season. Borussia Dortmund were also believed to be in attendance at the particular game for the same reason.

It was a good night to choose. Vermeeren was arguably the best player on the pitch as Antwerp pulled off a surprise win to claim their first ever Champions League points – they were thrashed in the first round by Real Madrid in their only previous European Cup campaign in 1957/58.

Arthur Vermeeren scored as Antwerp beat Barcelona / Dean Mouhtaropoulos/GettyImages

The emerging star scored the opening goal of the game within the first two minutes, finishing well past Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena after the Antwerp press had forced a mistake. Although Barca equalised, the Belgian side got back ahead in the second half and then claimed a famous victory when 17-year-old George Ilenikhena scored deep into stoppage time only moments after fellow 17-year-old Marc Guiu thought he had salvaged a late draw for the visitors.

There stands to be substantial competition for Vermeeren’s signature. As 90min reported in October, Barcelona are also among his admirers. They got a first-hand taste of his quality on Wednesday, with Antwerp boss Mark van Bommel having joked prior to the reverse fixture in Spain back in September that he would refuse to speak to Xavi about Vermeeren “because he would buy him immediately”.

Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester City are interested too, with the latter joining Arsenal and Tottenham in previously getting in touch with Antwerp to make initial enquiries.

This exhibition will showcase rich artefacts and collections celebrating womanhood, offering a unique complement to the themes explored in the play.

“The Africa Arts Network is thrilled to present ‘In the Chest of a Woman’ to audiences in Accra,” said Kofi Adinkra, founder of Africa Arts Network and producer of the play.

According to him, this production represents a culmination of commitment to fostering collaboration, innovation, and cultural exchange to promote the African experience globally.

“We invite theatre goers to join us for an unforgettable experience that celebrates the strength, resilience, and complexity of womanhood,” he stated.

Tickets for ‘In the Chest of a Woman’ are available for purchase online on egoticket.com and at the National Theatre box office on the days of the performances.

“A smaller, more focused team can deliver better results for the nation” he added.

Responding to questions about his previous government roles, Mr. Kyerematen defended his independence of thought “because you were part of government, does it mean you can’t have your own views?”

He stressed his right to offer a new direction for Ghana, asserting, “If things were not going the way they should, I have the right to come out. People know things will change under my leadership.”

To stabilize the cedi, Mr. Kyerematen proposed boosting exports and enhancing value addition in Ghana’s oil and gas sectors.

Regarding illegal mining, he advocated for a pragmatic approach.

“We should license small-scale miners and provide them with management support to tackle galamsey.”

Mr. Kyerematen’s overarching goal is to build a modern, industrialized economy with equal opportunities for all.

“I want to lead the process of building a modern industrialized economy that provides equal opportunities to all citizens.”

His vision, encapsulated in the Great Transformational Plan, aims to transition Ghana from instability to stability, growth, resilience, and prosperity.

Addressing political dynamics in an interview on Asempa FMs Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Kyerematen clarified that the Yellow Ghana Movement is not affiliated with the Movement for Change, describing it as an undercover operation aimed at destabilizing their efforts.

Ghana Gets $3m To Combat Terrorism

0

Officials from GCERF and the Ministry of National Security at the presser

GHANA is set to receive about $3 million in funding from the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) to help in the country’s efforts at fighting terrorism and extremism.

This was announced at a joint press briefing between the Ministry of National Security and the GCERF in Accra by the Chairman of the governing board of GCERF, Stefano Manservisi.

In showing the Fund’s commitment to this cause, Ghana has consequently received an initial disbursement of $350,000 in emergency funding, while engagement with civil society organizations, donors and government are underway to develop an investment strategy for the country.

In his remarks, Mr. Manservisi intimated that the funding was aimed at complementing the government’s efforts in dealing with extremism and terrorism.

“We are starting this summer, and we are going to make an initial investment of $3 million, which will be very small grants to various local community-based organizations. We intend to continue that investment for the next 10 years with increasing amounts,” he announced.

According to him, the work of GCERF would lead to a wider and more direct engagement with communities impacted or facing threats of extremism, especially in the northern part of the country.

Chief Director of the Ministry of National Security, Ambassador Sena Siaw-Boateng, stressed on the need for enhanced efforts into Ghana’s fight against extremism, which he hinted was increasing n the sub-region.

“It is imperative that we address the pressing issue of terrorism and violent extremism that continues to plague our sub-region and now threatens to trickle down far south towards Ghana. The rise in terrorism in neighboring countries poses a significant threat to our national security and stability,” she stated.

Noting the need for collaborative efforts in the fight, the Ambassador Siaw-Boateng underscored the importance of employing softer means of dealing with the phenomenon.

“It is crucial that we recognize the interconnectedness of the threats, and we need a collaborative effort to be able to combat them effectively. We are also trying to prevent any radicalization of our citizenry in the border community areas.

We must employ non-kinetic approaches, that are the soft approaches, to address the root causes of these issues, including social, economic disparities, marginalization, and ideological grievances,” she added.

Executive Director of the West Africa Centre for Counter-Extremism, Muktar Mumuni Muktar, highlighted the threats of terrorism confronting Ghana, especially at the various border communities in Northern Ghana.

He highlighted factors such as religious clashes, chieftaincy and ethnic disputes, ethnic marginalization as some of the driving forces posing threats of terrorism in Ghana.

“The reason unresolved conflicts are a big driver or a big factor is that extremist groups are very exploitative. They take advantage of existing conflicts either to recruit or to aid in attacks,” he disclosed.

He, however, opined that some initiatives already being undertaken by the government of Ghana, including the ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign are a great step at combating the menace while expressing belief that the GCERF support would help make such initiatives more effective in the battle against terrorism.

A beneficiary receiving her cash donation

MORE than 1,100 underprivileged residents of Mepe in the Volta Region have received cash donations from businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, to cushion them against the devastating impact of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Each of the 1,158 aged, single mothers, widows and persons with disabilities received a minimum of GH¢200 from the founder of the Class Media Group (CMG), as part of his and the group’s charity efforts aimed at alleviating poverty from society.

The beneficiaries received the cash amounts last Friday at a special donation exercise held at the Royal Masito Palace at Mepe.

It was a spectacle of joy and excitement for each of the beneficiaries, who included students, as they took turns to receive their share after which they heaped praises on Alhaji Agongo and the CMG for coming to their aid.

The exercise was jointly organised by the CMG and the Mepe Development Association, under the auspices of the Manklalo of Mepe Traditional Area and guest of honour, Torgbe Korsi Nego VI.

In a speech read on behalf of Alhaji Agongo, the business development manager of CMG, Agyemang Oppong Peprah said the exercise cost more than GH¢231,000.

He said the gesture was to help residents recover from the flooding and its effects.

“I am a product of difficulty, and with it came the lesson that the essence of our existence is not what we achieve ourselves, but how we help others achieve their goals,” he said, adding that, “As your brothers and sisters across the country, we deeply share in the pain and frustrations that these floods inflicted on you and your livelihoods.”

Torgbe Nego VI, who graced the occasion with his subjects, was full of praise for Alhaji Agongo and the CMG which comprises CTV, Accra FM, Class FM and Ho FM.

“We thank you for coming to our aid, we are very grateful to Alhaji Agongo and we are grateful to the Class Media Group,” he said.

An octogenarian beneficiary, Adayo Fiawoyife, said she did not only lose her farm, which is her main source of livelihood, but returned home after the flood to meet the debris of her collapsed house.

“I thank him (Alhaji Agongo) and I pray that God blesses him for his good heart and help him to get more, so he can support people like us,” she said.

An 83-year-old retired teacher, Madam Patience Gli, who is currently housing five families in her less affected apartment, was also awed by the gesture and quantum of money given out by Alhaji Agongo.

“I didn’t know Ghanaians can be that generous. God richly bless him and others for the support,” she remarked.

Present at the event included traditional leaders of Mepe, the business development manager of CMG, Mr. Agyemang Oppong Peprah, among others.

Stay off Songor salt mine

0

The Ada Traditional Council has sent a strong word of caution to political party activists, especially followers of the two major parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to stay off the Ada Songor salt concession.

At a press conference addressed by the Mankralo of the Ada Traditional Council, Nene Obichere Agudey III, said a series of stakeholder consultations have taken place, and at the tale end of the consensus, some individuals break ranks with agitations.

Traditional leaders believe their acts are derailing the progress of the communities that are expected to benefit from the natural resources of the land.

“We want to warn all political parties, especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stay clear of the Ada-Songor lagoon development. We believe the security services are able to speak to issues of breaches if any and maintain law and order and also able to determine whether there have been excesses in their operations.”

Nene Obichere Agudey III, assured that “our doors are always opened to continue engagement with all well-meaning Ada youth.”

Iconic Esther Mahlangu BMW 525i to come home after 32 years

0

It’s been 32 years since the arty and iconic BMW 525i, painted by world-renowned artist Esther Mahlangu, was first shown across the world – but now it’s coming home.

The 87-year-old South African Ndebele artist adorned a 1991 BMW 525i in the traditional Ndebele art style and colours for which it has been world-renowned for decades.

Mahlangu was the first woman to create the artwork on the sedan, turning it into a unique and colourful BMW Art Car.

However, the 12th BMW Art Car has not been in South Africa since its local reveal in 1991, an absence of almost 32 years.

Now BMW Group South Africa’s general manager for corporate communications, Thilosh Moodally, has revealed that the car is expected to return to its home soil next year.

Esther Mahlangu painted her BMW in over a week in 1991, using feathers to apply the paint, as part of the Art Car series which started in the 1970s.In the late-1980s BMW had made a strong stand internationally for SA art at a time of change by getting the engaging Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu to paint their desirable car and turn it into an artwork which vibrantly reflected her cultural heritage.

“The BMW Art Cars are on permanent display at the BMW Museum in Munich, although this 12th Art Car has been showcased at events in Hong Kong, New York, Miami, Shanghai and at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza on Lake Como (in Italy), for example.

“The car will return to South Africa early in 2024 for the Esther Mahlangu Retrospective to be held at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, where it will be open to the public.

“Thereafter, the vehicle will be displayed at the Iziko Museums, also in Cape Town, for a year… It will resume its touring schedule thereafter, with planned visits to the US and the UK,” Moodally said.

According to Moodally, the idea of involving the arts in crafting the German cars was initiated by French race car driver and art aficionado Hervé Poulain and was conceived in collaboration with the founder of BMW Motorsport, Jochen Neerpasch.

The first BMW Art Car was commissioned when they asked Alexander Calder to design Poulain’s BMW race car in 1975.

The idea resulted in a colourfully painted BMW 3.0 CSL which was raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it became an instant favourite with the public.

“Since then, 20 artists from around the world have created BMW Art Cars on the basis of contemporary BMW race cars and automobiles, including Roy Lichtenstein (1977, BMW 320i) and Andy Warhol (1979, BMW M1), and the 12th was painted by Mahlangu,” she said.

This was the first time a woman had been responsible for designing a vehicle in the Art Car series and the 12th is purely an exhibition piece.

Mahlangu, well-known for her bold large-scale contemporary paintings showing off her Ndebele heritage, has enjoyed a good working relationship with the German car brand for over 30 years now.

Traditionally, Ndebele women decorate the exterior walls of houses, symbolising important celebrations.

In 2016, she was again commissioned by the BMW Group to refine a BMW 7 Series. The vehicle was on display at the Frieze Art Fair which took place in London in 2016 but touched down in the country about seven years ago.

The 7 series has since formed part of BMW Group South Africa’s Heritage Collection and has been displayed at various arts and cultural events across.

Seven years ago when the 7 series touched ground Mahlangu reportedly said: “To paint is in my heart and it’s in my blood. The way I paint was taught to me by my mother and my grandmother.

“The images and colours have changed and I have painted on many different surfaces and objects, but I still love to paint.”

Guinea-Bissau, grateful for Ghana’s support for its liberation struggle

0

By Stephen Asante/Maxwell Awumah/James Amoh Junior

Ho (V/R), March 06, GNA – The Government of Guinea-Bissau has praised Ghana for its massive support for that country during its struggle for independence.

“We people in Guinea-Bissau are grateful to Ghana for the solidarity and support during the country’s struggle for liberation.” President Umaro Sissoco Embalo noted.

He was hopeful that this friendship would be strengthened in order to chart the course for peace, political stability and social development for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

President Sissoco Embalo, who was addressing the commemoration of Ghana’s 66th Independence Anniversary, at Adaklu, Volta Region, said his country cherished the long-standing relationship between the two countries.

He praised Ghana for championing the cause of the African continent over the years – a path which saw most sub-Saharan African countries building the self-confidence to free themselves from colonial rule.

The Guinea-Bissau President, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), recalled how some forebears such as the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, played an inspirational role in spearheading the cause of the continent.

The former Ghanaian President, he said, would forever be remembered for his dedicated and selfless life.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the country was happy to have had the visiting President as the Guest of Honour for its Independence Anniversary.

“Ghana is proud of the strong ties of friendship between the two countries,” he said, adding that it was his hope that the two countries would work together to build a prosperous future.

“Our Unity, Our Strength, Our purpose”, was the theme for the Independence Anniversary Celebration, which also had in attendance the Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, and other prominent dignitaries.

One significant feature about Ghana’s independence is the country’s firm grip on democratic rule, especially in the last 30 years, which has brought in its wake political stability.

Over the past three decades, it has experienced one of the world’s most successful transitions to multiparty democracy, and it is one of the few emerging democracies that has taken root.

Advising the Auditor-General not interference – Attorney-General

0

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, says his advice to the Auditor-General not to publish its report before sending it to Parliament was not an interference.

In a statement released today, the A-G said as the principal legal advisor to the government, he has the constitutional mandate to give legal advice to all Public Services of Ghana including the Audit Service.

According to the A-G, the independence of the Auditor -General in its operations does not preclude him from legal advice from the Attorney -General.

“It ought to be pointed out that the functional independence of the Auditor-General under article 187(7)(a) of the Constitution does not confer immunity from legal advice.
Legal advice to a constitutional body cannot under any circumstance be construed to amount to interference with the performance of its constitutional functions.

A view to the contrary implies that an “independent constitutional body” has absolute freedom to act in any manner it desires, except when a court of law has ordered, even when its legal adviser (whether public or private) is of the opinion that its actions are in conflict with the law. This sounds in absurdity and is the product of unbridled sensationalism,” the A-G said.

A-G’s advise

The A-G’s statement was in response criticisms by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), over a letter by the Attorney-General advising the Auditor -General to withdraw a publication on its website about an audit report on COVID -19 funds.

Mr Dame had described as unconstitutional the publication of the Auditor-General’s report on the COVID-19 expenditure before Parliament completes considering it.

Cybersecurity risks may impair operational capabilities, threaten viability of financial institutions – Bawumia

0

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has underscored the importance of a robust cybersecurity infrastructure for maintaining confidence in the financial sector, especially as it adapts to the growing influence of digital technology in the provision of financial services.

Speaking at the commissioning last week, he said the use of digital technologies continues to transform business models of financial institutions with new revenue and value-producing opportunities.

“Whilst these digital technologies support banking services and enable banking strategies, the underlying security vulnerabilities pose key cyber risks among these institutions,” he said.

He added “Cybersecurity risks may impair operational capabilities and threaten the viability of financial institutions. Likewise, the contagion of cyber risk in a financial system is heightened by the extent of interconnectedness and therefore, any severe cyber-attack could threaten the stability of the financial system,” he noted.

The Bank of Ghana initiated the FICSOC Project in 2019 aimed at threat intelligence-sharing, industry situational awareness and incident response among its regulated financial institutions. Officials of the BoG say as of April 2023, all commercial banks had been connected to the FICSOC and reporting of cyber threat intelligence in the form of FICSOC alerts and FICSOC advisories is being communicated to these banks.

Vice President Bawumia commended the Governor, Board and Management of the Bank of Ghana for their foresight and leadership of Ghana’s financial sector, evidenced in the design and implementation of policies aimed at safeguarding the sector and ensuring growth.

“The commissioning of this important edifice and infrastructure, which I understand is the first of its kind funded and owned by a Central Bank in Africa, is a remarkable feat by the Bank of Ghana. It is without doubt that very soon, other central banks in the sub-region will visit the Bank of Ghana to understudy your approach to cybersecurity defense in the financial sector.”

Congratulating the Bank for its proactive actions, Vice President Bawumia charged financial industry players to take full advantage of the capabilities of the FICSOC, while continually strengthening in-house security operations.

“My expectation and that of Government is that financial institutions will be better equipped to deal with severe and emerging cyber threats targeting the banking industry, including zero-day threats and advanced persistent threats and exploits, and allow them to make informed decisions regarding the response to those threats.

“I wish to stress that the FICSOC platform is neither in competition with nor a replacement for regulated institutions’ cybersecurity risk management (including the SOC operations) but rather complements each financial institution’s cyber and information security management framework. Hence, the responsibility for cyber and information security risk management ultimately lies with each regulated financial institution, not FICSOC operators or the Bank of Ghana.”

Ensuring good governance is NDC’s focus now

0

Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the party will channel its energy into ensuring that the country is governed well by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, all members of the party must support the agenda following the resolution of the issue of the leadership change in Parliament.

The party has indicated that the challenges confronting the reshuffle of the Minority leadership in Parliament have been addressed after a meeting among the national executives, the Council of Elders and the Minority caucus on Monday.

Speaking to the members of the caucus, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah urged the new leadership to work assiduously.

“We are going to refocus on the issue of bad governance in the country including works on the National Cathedral.  We’ve cautioned the new leadership that, the record of the performance of the old leadership serves as a yardstick to the measurement of their own performance.”

Chairman of the Council of Elders for the NDC, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu said the party must win the next polls.

“From the reception the new leaders have received, this is not the beginning but the end of the meeting. The excitement shows that the issue has been resolved. There is no problem now. Our problem is to win the 2024 election.”

The meeting which took place at the DF Annan Auditorium in Parliament had stalwarts of the party including the Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and his General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, among others present.

Others at the meeting included former Deputy Minority Leader, James Klutse Avedzi, and former Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adzaho.

“You can see from the enthusiasm that the challenges that arose from the announcement of the new leadership of our Caucus have all been resolved”, Johnson Asiedu Nketia added.

Constituencies to look out for –

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) goes to the polls today to elect its parliamentary candidates for the 2024 elections.

This year’s internal elections promise to spring up with a lot of surprises, considering the number of people joining the contest.

Before the picking and filing of nominations, 18 Members of Parliament decided not to contest the elections as they were looking to pave the way for the younger generation to take over.

In this article, we look at some of the contests to look out for.

Akim Swedru

This is a constituency to look out for, considering the buzz surrounding the contest. The incumbent member of parliament is being contested by the Controller and Accountant General, Mr. Kwasi Kwaning Bosompem. There have been speculations about the use of money and power to influence delegates. However, the incumbent member of parliament, Kennedy Nyarko Osei believes that with the kind of work he has invested in the constituency, he will be given the nod by the delegates to represent the NPP in the 2024 elections.

Old Tafo

The Tafo Constituency in the Ashanti Region is one to also look at. First-time Member of Parliament, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, is being contested by Louis Carol, whom he contested in 2020. Lous Carol is said to be making inroads in the constituency considering her father’s influence as chairman. However, Hon. Ekow Vincent believes that he will be given a second term by the people of Tafo Pankrono.

Bantama

Former Deputy Chief of Staff and currently the Works and Housing Minister, Asenso Boakye, is being contested by the young brother of Kennedy Agyapong. Ralph Agyapong, throughout the campaign period, has been very vocal and has the backing of his brother, Kennedy Agyapong. The two are working extremely hard to take out Asenso Boakye who has been silent over the period. The Bantama Constituency is one that does not keep Members of Parliament for more than one term. Can Asenso Boakye make history today? Or will Ralph Agyapong carry the day? We live to see.

Nsawam Adoagyiri

Annoh Dompreh, who is the current Member of Parliament, believes there is no contest. He is expecting a massive victory from his delegates and has said that he will teach his contenders a lesson. However, his closest contender, Hayford Siaw of the Ghana Library Authority, made inroads into the constituency and is optimistic of winning 70% of the votes to be cast on the day.

Yendi

The contest in Yendi is another one to look forward to. The current Member of Parliament and son of the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama is facing a stiff contest from the Chief Executive of MASLOC. Farouk Aliu Mahama contested Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah in 2020 but beat her. In this year’s primaries, Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah is optimistic of a win and Farouk is sure his tenure will be extended by the good delegates of the Yendi constituency.

Bekwai

Bekwai is another constituency to look out for in the NPP primaries. Why? This is because COP George Alex Mensah, who was involved in the scandal to remove the current IGP, is optimistic that he will be made the parliamentary candidate. Meanwhile, Ralph Poku-Adusei, a private legal practitioner, is in pole position to win the election. Other contestants include Kingsley Opoku Agyemang and Henry Opoku Ware.

Walewale

The Walewale contest is between Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuweira, sitting MP and Gender Minister (number one on the ballot), Tahiru Shaman (number two on the ballot), Alhaji Dr. Mahama Tiah Abdul Kabiru (number three on the ballot), and Jangdow Mahama (number four on the ballot). What makes this contest interesting is the fact that the Vice President’s sister is being contested by the Vice President’s protege. Dr Mahama Tiah Abdul Kabiru is making inroads in the constituency and could cause an upset.

Adansi Asokwa

Another constituency to watch is the Adansi Asokwa constituency. The current Member of Parliament, K.T. Hammond, is being contested. He tried to get his opponents disqualified, but that was not achieved. However, he is optimistic about winning the election. He is being contested by Sammy Binfo Darkwa, Kwabena Asamoah, and Dr Boakye Acheampong.

Dome Kwabenya

This is another constituency to look out for. The incumbent member of parliament is looking to get another nod. However, it could be remembered that Adwoa Safo Sarah left her job for over a year to stay in the United States of America. She has since apologized. Adwoa Safo Sarah is being contested by The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Dr Mike Oquaye Jnr and Sheela Oppong Sakyi, a legal practitioner and strategist at the office of the First Lady are in the contest.

Algeria, Morocco, South Africa, Zambia and Benin-Nigeria want to replace Guinea as hosts of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed on Saturday.

Guinea, chosen in 2014 to stage the premier African national team tournament, withdrew last year after little progress was made in preparing for the biennial event.

CAF officials will do inspection tours of all the candidates this month with the winners to be announced on February 10.

ECOWAS Military Chiefs arrive in Accra for meeting on Niger coup

0

Chiefs of Defense Staff within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) subregion have arrived in the country for a crucial meeting today on possible military intervention in Niger.

The Chiefs of Defense Staff of Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger will not be at this meeting which seeks to strategize on how best to send troops to Niger to restore constitutional order after the Military junta ousted President Mohammed Bazuom.

Plans by ECOWAS Leaders to commit troops to Niger have been met with stiff opposition in Ghana.

The Minority in Parliament says it will resist any attempt by the President to send soldiers to Niger.

The ECOWAS has condemned attacks by armed groups in Niger which have led to the death of several Nigerien soldiers.

On July 27, soldiers, primarily from the presidential guard, seized Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, leading to the dissolution of the constitution, suspension of all institutions, and the closure of the nation’s borders.

President Mohamed Bazoum remains in the custody of the presidential guard since July 27, despite cautions from ECOWAS for the military to hand over power to the constitutionally elected President.

ECOWAS in a statement bemoaned the various attacks on Nigerien soldiers by armed groups, calling for a return to constitutional rule to deal with the security situation in Niger.

Physicians and Surgeons College to decentralize training of specialists

0

The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) says initiatives to decentralize and expand training for all specialists beyond teaching institutions in the country are well underway.

According to the college, the two main recognized facilities for specialized training are Korle-Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals, with fifteen other hospitals functioning as rotation sites.

This is part of the college’s 20th anniversary of delivering specialty education in medicine, surgery, and allied fields.

Dr. Justina Ansah, Chairperson of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons’ 20th Anniversary Committee told Citi News that the college will also use new technology in its effort to decentralize.

“The next 20 years, we are designating it to the training beyond the teaching hospitals in Ghana and with the use of advanced technology. We have realized that our training sites are only in Kumasi and Tamale and other ones. In the 20 years, we are looking at moving from the 15 training sites.”

The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons is a public institution that was established in 2003 to provide post-graduate medical training in medicine, surgery and related disciplines.

Established by Act 635 of 2003 and revised by Act 833 of 2011, the mandates of the College are to promote specialist education in Medicine, Surgery and related disciplines, promote continuous professional development in medicine, surgery and related disciplines, promote postgraduate medical education and research in medicine, surgery and related disciplines and contribute to the formulation of policies on sound health and public health generally.

How can you tell me this story? – Netizens react to video of train’s speed before accident –

0

A video of one of the newly imported trains from Poland that got into an accident on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line during its test run has surfaced on social media.

The footage captures moments before the unfortunate incident after a driver abandoned the vehicle on the railway line, resulting in a collision with the train on Thursday.

In this video, the train moves at a relatively steady pace. It is not at top speed.

This video has got netizens questioning how the train driver could not view the ‘abandoned’ truck on the railway line before ramming into it.

“This couldn’t stop upon seeing a truck about 100m away? How can you tell me this story?” a user wrote.

Some netizens are also requesting videos of the exact moment when the collision occurred if the test run was being recorded.

“Drones were working but we didn’t see the particular part of the collision. Eiii this country,” another user wrote.

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended the driver of a Hyundai truck with registration number GS 9018-20 for his alleged role in the accident.

The truck driver reportedly became stranded on the railway track while delivering cement blocks, as the vehicle was unable to pass through an underpass beneath the bridge.

Minister of Railways Development Peter Amewu stated that engineers are currently undertaking repairs on the train.

IMF deal: Negotiations between government and ICC in deadlock – Ato Forson discloses

0

The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has raised concerns about a reported deadlock in the negotiations for the second tranche of a $3 billion credit facility from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, leader of the Minority caucus, disclosed that a disagreement has arisen between the government and the International Creditors’ Committee.

The disagreement revolves around the cut-off point for external debt in the debt restructuring process, a critical factor for securing the next tranche of $600 million from the IMF.

These claims were made by the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam MP during his concluding remarks on the 2024 budget debate in Parliament on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.

The alleged stalemate raises questions about the progress and consensus in the negotiations between Ghana and the IMF for the financial assistance package.

“Mr Speaker, it will interest you to know that there is a deadlock in the negotiation between Ghana and the International Creditors’ Committee (ICC) made up of China and the Paris Club 50. There is a major disagreement on the cut-off point, regarding the external debt that must be excluded from the restructuring. Mr Speaker, I do not need to sound the alarm that at this point, Ghana is between a rock and a hard place.”

“Ghana will need to decide either to accept the cut-off date as proposed by the International Creditors’ Committee and get the IMF Board to approve our USD600 million second tranche or refuse to accept.”

Dr Forson clarified that if Ghana agrees to the cut-off point proposed by the International Creditors’ Committee (ICC), it would result in more debt being excluded from the ongoing debt restructuring.

Consequently, this would require the immediate inclusion of that excluded debt in the budget to facilitate its servicing.

“The moment we begin the servicing of our external debt, everything in this budget will change.”

Ghana obtained a $3 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to address the challenges of a struggling economy marked by high debt, inflation, and a depreciating currency.

The initial installment of $600 million from the Bretton Woods Institutions has already been received by the country.

In October 2023, the IMF announced that it was awaiting the results of Ghana’s discussions with its bilateral creditors before disbursing the next installment of the $3 billion bailout package.

Vinicius and Rodrygo score twice as Real thrash Valencia

0

Vinicius Jr has now scored six goals in nine appearances against Valencia

Real Madrid thrashed Valencia as Carlo Ancelotti’s side moved two points behind La Liga leaders Girona.

Dani Carvajal fired in an excellent opener at the near post and Vinicius Jr chested in at close range from Rodrygo’s cross before the break.

Vinicius then finished low into the corner after 49 minutes for his second.

Rodrygo completed the rout, latching on to a loose pass from goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to slot home, before hammering a fifth past the Georgian.

Hugo Duro scored a consolation for Valencia with two minutes remaining, poking the ball in from Hugo Gonzalez’s cross.

Real made a fast start at the Santiago Bernabeu as Toni Kroos’ free-kick was dinked against the crossbar.

Duro was particularly wasteful for the away side in the first half, spurning several excellent chances.

The Spanish striker was sent through on goal but shot straight at goalkeeper Andriy Lunin and missed a key chance at the back post after Pepelu’s pinpoint cross, before Real took full control of the match.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham was not in Real’s squad due to a shoulder injury.

Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk: Undisputed fight signed

0

A historic undisputed heavyweight fight between champions Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been signed and will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Additional details, including the fight date, are yet to be announced.

Briton Fury, 35, is the WBC champion and Ukraine’s Usyk, 36, holds the WBA, WBO and IBF titles.

“Delighted to finally get this fight signed,” said Queensbury promoter Frank Warren. “This is the biggest fight that could possibly be made in our sport.”

The winner will be crowned the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era.

The targeted date is 23 December, although the fight could be pushed back to early next year.

Fury has won 33 fights with one draw since turning professional in 2008.

‘The Gypsy King’ must first come through a non-title bout against MMA star Francis Ngannou uninjured on 28 October in Riyadh.

Usyk – who has won all 21 pro bouts – defended his titles against Londoner Daniel Dubois in August.

“The heavyweights always spark the imagination of the fans, and I have no doubt this will be the biggest boxing event of the century,” Warren added.

Fury faced criticism for failing to reach terms with Usyk after a proposed bout at London’s Wembley Stadium in April fell through.

“I can’t believe that it’s happening but it is,” Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk said.

There has not been an undisputed heavyweight champion since 1999 when Lennox Lewis beat Evander Holyfield to defend the WBA, WBC and IBF titles.

“Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are the two greatest heavyweights of their generation, and I can’t wait to see what happens when they step into the ring in Riyadh,” Fury’s co-promoter Bob Arum said.

“They are special talents worthy of competing for the greatest prize in sports.”

The fight will form part of ‘Riyadh Season’ – an entertainment events festival held in Saudi Arabia’s capital every winter since its launch in 2019.

A number of high-profile bouts have been held in Saudi in recent years, including Usyk’s win over Anthony Joshua in August 2022.

The Gulf kingdom has been accused of investing in sport and using high-profile events to improve its international reputation.

Saudi Arabia has been criticised for its human rights violations – 81 men were executed on one day last year – women’s rights abuses, the criminalisation of homosexuality, the restriction of free speech and the war in Yemen.

Its international standing was severely damaged by the 2018 killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a US-based Saudi journalist who was a prominent critic of the government.

Human rights campaigners say sport is being used by the Saudi government to distract from long-standing reputation issues.

Felix Jakens, Amnesty International UK’s Head of Priority Campaigns and Individuals at Risk, said in a statement: “Ever since Anthony Joshua’s fight against Andy Ruiz in 2019 we’ve become used to these big-money bouts being hosted in Saudi Arabia.

“They are clearly part of a pattern of sportswashing where the Saudi authorities try to use sport to distract from their appalling human rights record.

“We’d like to see both Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk using their platforms to speak out about human rights issues in Saudi Arabia.”

Oleksandr Usyk flexes beside a picture of Tyson Fury throwing a punch
Usyk and Fury are both undefeated in their pro careers

Fury won his first world title after dethroning Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, before taking a hiatus from the sport.

After well-documented issues with mental health, he returned more than two and a half years later. He contested a trilogy with Deontay Wilder and, having drawn the first fight, beat the American in 2020 to become WBC champion.

Fury won the third fight with hard-hitting Wilder and has since defended his belt against Britons Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora.

Usyk is one of the most decorated fighters in world boxing. The London 2012 Olympic gold medallist became undisputed world champion before dethroning Briton Joshua in 2021.

Analysis – the winner will earn greatness status

It is the announcement everybody wanted but nobody expected, especially just before close of play on a Friday. The biggest possible fight in world boxing has been signed. Fury and Usyk have put their differences aside. It does not get bigger than this.

For so long boxing lovers have been left frustrated with the state of the heavyweight division. Why aren’t the best fighting the best? Fury’s fight with Ngannou – a boxing novice – in particular left a bad taste.

But now we can finally get the answer as to who is the top heavyweight boxer in the world. Fury and Usyk will both one day enter the hall of fame. The winner of this fight, however, will earn greatness status.

There will still be some wondering why there is no date. Both sides are aiming for 23 December, but that will leave Fury just eight weeks to prepare after his ‘fight’ with Ngannou.

Riyadh season runs until March so it could take place at any point over the next six months. Some may remain sceptical all the way up until both men are in the ring and the first bell chimes.

Court Denies Binance Executive Bail

0

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, denied the bail application of Binance crypto currency executive, identified as Tigran Gambaryan.

Recall that the company and its officials are facing a number of criminal charges in Nigeria after the federal government recently cracked down on the cryptocurrency platform in a bid to strengthen the naira.

Justice Emeka Nwite, on Friday, while delivering the ruling held that the bail application is refused as he has carefully gone through the application submitted before him and resolved that the defendant will jump bail if granted.

It was gathered that the crypto company and its executive were arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on money laundering before the judge.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the defendant, Mark Mordi, argued that the court had the power to grant bail to his client and impose conditions to ensure his presence in court.

The Prosecution Counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, opposed the bail application, stating that the defendant was a flight risk.

He stated that Tigrana tempted to obtain a new passport which he claimed was stolen, and this was a suspicious act given the proximity to his colleague’s escape from custody.

He added that the court cannot risk granting him bail, especially since he is not attached to any community in Nigeria.

Ekele said: “The fact that the passport of the defendant is with the complainant does not guarantee that he will remain in Nigeria because the defendant is not only an American citizen but also an Armenian citizen by birth.”

Delivering ruling, the judge said several factors including the nature of offence and its severity must be considered when trying to decide whether or not bail should be granted to the defendant applicant.

Justice Nwite agreed with the depositions made by prosecution and was of the view that the applicant will jump bail if bail is granted to him.

He subsequently ordered that the trial be given an accelerated hearing.

Funeral Unites NPP, NDC –

Samira Bawumia (far left) and other mourners at the funeral grounds

SUPPORTERS OF the two largest political parties in the country, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), displayed oneness on Friday.

This was during the one-week celebration of the late Kingsley George Adjei who is nicknamed as ‘KG’, which was held at Asokwa in the Greater Kumasi.

The late Kingsley George Adjei is the father of former Deputy Defense Minister during the NDC regime, Ken Adjei and Edmund Kyei, is a top NPP member in the Ashanti Region.

Because of Ken Adjei and Edmund Kyei’s different political affiliations, the one-week observation of their deceased father attracted scores of mourners from both the NPP and the NDC.

The NPP delegation consisted of the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia and other top members of the party in Kumasi, including Nana Owusu Prempeh, Maxi the Car Dealer and other party stalwarts.

The NDC delegation included party gurus like Betty Mould Iddrisu, Samuel Yaw Adusei, Francis Dodovi, Appiah Stadium and other prominent party members in the Ashanti Region.

The NPP group was at the one-week celebrations to sympathize with their party man, Edmund Kyei, whilst the NDC members were also there to support their party member, Ken Adjei.

Show of unity

Encouragingly, the NPP and NDC members were seen embracing each other to openly display that indeed they were one people, irrespective of their different political affiliations.

The country would hold a crucial election next year and such show of friendship and oneness is crucially needed to help protect the peace and unity being experienced in the country.

NCA shuts down four Radio Stations in Bawku

0

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has shut down four FM Radio Stations in Bawku, in the Upper East Region.

The affected stations, namely Bawku FM, Source FM, Zahra FM, and Gumah FM, were closed following recommendations from the Upper East Regional Security Council and guidance from the Ministry of National Security.

The decision stems from concerns about the operations of the Radio Stations and the inflammatory remarks made by their panellists and presenters, which have allegedly played a role in escalating the Bawku conflict.

The conflict, in turn, has resulted in the loss of lives and property in Bawku and its surrounding areas.

The NCA, invoking its powers under Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), justified the shutdown as a necessary step for national security and public interest.

This section empowers the Authority to suspend or revoke licenses or frequency authorizations when such actions are deemed essential for national security or the public interest.

In a statement, the NCA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders and urged all parties involved to adhere strictly to the principles and regulations governing the communications industry.

Crocodiles Stranded In Sissala – Severe Drought Hits Water Habitats |

0

Crocodiles are totems for some groups of people in Northern Ghana, particularly in the Sissala enclave of the Upper West Region.

The people revere the crocodiles and, therefore, protect them from any harm. Aside the belief system, these reptiles have also put the area on the world tourism map.

In fact, the Sissala enclave’s contribution to tourism through these reptiles is legendary.

The communities where these reptiles are found are Taffiasi, Bujan, Nabugujan, Gwollu Wuljua and Duu East, all in the Sissala West District, as well as the Sissala East Municipality.

Drought

However, the lives of these crocodiles are under serious threat as the ponds and pools that serve as thier habitats are drying up.

The freshwater habitats of the reptiles have been extensively altered due to human activities and climate change.

The situation has compelled some of the reptiles to bask in the scorching sun, with others straying into nearby slush for summer dormancy.

With the area reeling from severe drought with its ponds, pools and dams drying up, the crocodiles are having a field day exploring land.

Unfortunately, these crocodiles, as part of efforts to locate water bodies during the dry season, get killed by hunters and bushfires.

Their population is gradually declining as a result of the absence of water bodies.

Crocodiles going extinct

Crocodiles are large semiaquatic (growing equally well in or adjacent to water) reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.

Crocodiles tend to congregate in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, wetlands and sometimes in brackish water and saltwater.

Some of the ponds overgrown with weeds and silted

They are carnivorous animals, feeding mostly on vertebrates such as fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, and sometimes on invertebrates such as octopuses, snails, slugs and cuttlefish. They also feed on crabs, lobsters, crayfish and shrimps, among others.

More than 100 crocodiles were killed by bush fires last year, the Daily Graphic gathered from its investigations.

For instance, in the Gwollu township, two ponds which serve as habitat for a number of the reptiles dries up during the dry season, forcing them to stray into the bushes and homes.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Assemblyman for the Bujan Electoral Area, Doho Sumaila, expressed worry about the situation and said the reptiles were gradually going extinct.

“Due to climate change and human activities, the water bodies have dried up and the crocodiles are dying day in and day out,” he lamented.

Beliefs, totems

In communities such as Gwollu Wuljua, Bujan, Taffiasi, Nabugujan and Duu East, the people revere crocodiles as thier ancestors and souls.

The people believe they have special connections to these reptiles, hence there is mutual respect between humans and the reptiles. It is a taboo to kill, harm or eat crocodiles in the area.

Mr Sumaila, who corroborated the belief systems, explained that “they are not ordinary crocodiles; they are the totems of the people”.

Community members compete with the reptiles at the ponds for water

He said it was believed that every member of the clan had a crocodile which was his or her soul, adding that killing a crocodile meant that human being was killed.

“Per custom, if a crocodile dies, it is buried as a human being would be buried. If you are caught killing one, you will be charged by the chief to perform some rituals,” he added.

Tourism potential

The crocodiles appear to be tamed and sometimes stray to the villages without harming anyone.

It is estimated that more than 1,000 crocodiles were living in the various water bodies in the area.

According to a Tour Guide and Environmental Activist, Ayamga Bawa Fatawu, the crocodiles usually crept from one pond to the other for survi during the dry season.

He said though the sites were not developed, a number of tourists visited the place to have a real feel of nature.

He, therefore, appealed for the construction of dams, ponds and the proper development of the sites to serve as safe havens for the reptiles.

That, Mr Fatawu said, would help boost tourism and open up the area.

Stop-gap measures

Although some institutions have done their best to put in place measures to protect the reptiles, their efforts have not yielded any positive results.

In 2021, the Gbele National Park in the Sissala East Municipality, in collaboration with the Tree Growers Association in Gwollu, dredged and planted some trees along the banks of some dams and ponds.

However, some of these water bodies have since been silted, while the trees could not survive.

The Manager of the Gbele National Park, Dr Maabier Polycup, told the Daily Graphic that “as a stop gap measure, we distilled some of the water bodies and planted some trees along the embankments but the situation still persists.

“For now, the best remedy is to put in place a committee backed by the traditional authorities to ensure the planting and regulation of the usage of the water bodies.

A crocodile in a small pool

“Once the traditional authorities are involved, the residents will be scared to go near the water bodies,” he stated.

He also suggested the construction of standard dams which could hold enough water through the seasons for the reptiles.

When contacted, the Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive, Batong Fuseini Yakubu, acknowledged the situation and said the assembly had earmarked the development of the sites in its medium term development plan, but was lacking funds.

He, therefore, called on potential investors to partner the assembly to develop the tourist sites.

Harry Maguire’s proposed move to West Ham off

0

Manchester United paid a record £80m to make Harry Maguire the world’s most expensive defender in 2019

Harry Maguire’s move to West Ham is off with the defender intent on staying at Manchester United to fight for his place in the first team.

The England defender, 30, looked set to join the Hammers after a £30m fee was agreed between the clubs.

Maguire struggled for first-team opportunities last season and was stripped of the captaincy this season.

However, United have maintained they would respect his wishes and did not want to push him out of the club.

A source close to the player said that while Maguire “respects West Ham and David Moyes” there was “never an agreement in place” over his personal terms.

They added: “Harry remains settled at United, loves the club and believes he will get plenty of opportunities to play this season.”

Maguire was on the bench for United’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday but did not get on even though manager Erik ten Hag used five substitutes and replaced central defender Lisandro Martinez with Victor Lindelof at half-time.

Prior to that game, Ten Hag said Maguire would be better off leaving United if he is not confident enough to battle for a first-team spot.

Bawumia has our support because of competence, not because he’s a Northerner – Tolon MP

0

Deputy Majority Chief Whip Alhaji Habib Iddrisu says the support for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is not because he is a Northerner.

According to him, the Vice President is not the first Northerner to have put himself up to be voted for in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) dismissing the tribal card completely.

“When you see all of us rallying behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, it is not because he’s a Northerner because he is not the first, not the second, not the third Northerner to have ever wanted to be the flagbearer of the party.

But where we are at the moment, he is the most competent person and the best person to lead us to break the eight. That is why you see all of us rallying behind him. When you see the man and his demeanour, you will know he has fought for the country. People will definitely underestimate him”, he observed on Tamale-based Diamond FM.

He says the benevolence of the Vice President is remarkable and worthy of leading the country as President.

“People do things for eye service and for people to see BUT Dr Bawumia does things for people and he doesn’t talk” Tolon MP added.

NDC urges journalists to hold govt accountable

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged journalists in Ghana to persistently hold the government accountable.

The call was made when the leadership of the opposition party paid a courtesy call on the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday.

During the visit, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, cited the GH¢60 billion losses incurred by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) as one of the corrupt activities in the country and a reason why the media must hold duty bearers to account.

“Transport fares have gone up, the cost of living has gone up, and people are struggling,” he said. “But that institution has decided to dig in regardless of what anyone does. That is what must be done because it seems to suit what the government of the day wants, which is nothing short of suppression. And these are conversations that we believe you, as the media, will be able to push, not for the sake of any political party, but to ensure that institutions in this country work well and that you hold duty bearers to account.”

The GJA, for its part, called on political parties to desist from attacking journalists.

The association’s president, Albert Dwumfour, revealed that it had received various reports from media houses about assaults on some of its workers during the Assin North by-election.

Tottenham reach agreement with Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou

0

Ange Postecoglou’s last game as Celtic boss saw them beat Inverness in the Scottish Cup final

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has agreed to become Tottenham’s new manager on a two-year contract.

The Australian, 57, has just finished his second season at Celtic, leading them to the Scottish title both years and the domestic treble this term.

Spurs have been looking for a new manager since Antonio Conte’s exit in March, with Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason taking interim charge.

The final elements of the deal are being finalised before an announcement.

Athens-born Postecoglou’s only experience in Europe before joining Celtic in 2021 had been a spell in charge of Greek lower league side Panachaiki in 2008.

He has won the Australian title with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar, Japan’s top flight with Yokohama F Marinos and also led the Australian national team to victory at the 2015 Asian Cup.

Postecoglou takes over a Tottenham side who finished eighth in the Premier League and face a first season without European football since 2009-10.

He becomes the London side’s fourth permanent boss, after Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte, since the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino in 2019.

Postecoglou has won five trophies from a possible six since arriving in Scotland in the summer of 2021, re-establishing Celtic as the dominant force in the country.

He admitted he was seen as a “joke” when he took over, with Celtic having just finished 25 points behind Rangers.

But he becomes one of only five managers – along with Jock Stein, Martin O’Neill, Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon – to secure a domestic clean sweep for Celtic.

Postecoglou became a hugely popular figure with the Celtic fans, with his recruitment and attacking football catching the eye.

Nana Frimpomaa Akosua Sarpong Kumankumah files to contest CPP flagbearer race

0

The Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Frimpomaa Akosua Sarpong Kumankumah has filed nomination to contest the upcoming flagbearer race of the Party.

The Chairperson was the first among four candidates that had picked nomination forms to file her forms at the Party’s headquarters in Accra on Monday evening.

Accompanied by some members of the Party, Nana Kumankumah presented her forms to Wing Commander Patrick Sorborjor, the Chairman of the CPP Congress Committee in the presence of members of the Committee.

Nana Kumankumah was the running mate to Dr Abu Sakara, who contested the 2012 presidential elections on the ticket of the CPP.

She was subsequently voted as Chairperson of the CPP in 2020 and has occupied that position till date.

Speaking to journalists after filing her forms, Nana Kumankumah said she was confident that members of the CPP would vote for her to lead the Party for the 2024 presidential elections.

She expressed optimism that she would be able to break what she described as the ‘monopoly’ enjoyed by the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress since the commencement of the 4th Republic.

She said her vision was also to ensure that the Party won seats in Parliament, adding that she had identified some constituencies that the Party could win with the right strategies in place.

“I am the woman of the century for the youth of this nation. I am here because I believe in Ghana. I have taken up this mantle to ensure that I give the youth an alternative vehicle to vent their frustration in a constructive way,” she said.

The CPP is expected to hold its presidential primaries in Tamale in the Northern Region from 29th to 30th July 2023.

The elections would be followed by the constituency primaries, which the Party said would be announced in due course.

The Party currently does not have representation in Parliament.

In the 2020 presidential elections, the CPP garnered 12, 200 votes, representing 0.93 per cent.

Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, who represented the Party in the 2020 presidential elections, is not contesting the Party’s upcoming primaries.

Johnny Depp gets a 7-minute standing ovation for new film at Cannes

The French are still enamoured with Johnny Depp.

The embattled actor, who hasn’t appeared in public since his protracted 2022 legal battle with ex-girlfriend Amber Heard, received an ecstatic seven-minute standing ovation on Tuesday night at the premiere of Cannes Film Festival’s opening night film “Jeanne Du Barry.”

Depp held back tears as the crowd in the South of France erupted in prolonged applause for his performance as the King Louis XV. He waved to the audience on the balcony and seemed taken aback by the response.

The film’s director and star Maiwenn also broke out into tears as she briefly took the mic. “I want to share this moment with my lover, with my producer, with Le Pacte,” she said. “It was a production that was difficult to finance … and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theatre.”

Depp arrived at Cannes welcomed by thousands of supportive fans, who carried signs outside the Palais and trembled as they tried to touch their idol. Many were successful in making contact with Depp, who worked the fan line outside for five full minutes before walking the carpet.

“Jeanne du Barry” stars Maiwenn as Jeanne Vaubernier, a working-class woman in 18th-century France who rises the social ranks and becomes King Louis XV’s lover. Her working-class roots make her a social pariah in the king’s court. The supporting cast includes Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud and Pascal Greggory.

Maiwenn’s latest courted controversy long before Cannes opening night. The film marks Depp’s most high-profile acting role since the conclusion of his 2022 legal battle against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Although the jury sided in Depp’s favour, the actor remains on the sidelines of Hollywood as a result of abuse allegations that surfaced during the trial. Festival director Thierry Fremaux spoke to the press ahead of opening night and addressed Depp’s presence at Cannes.

“I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the U.S,” Fremaux said. “To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule: It’s the freedom of thinking, and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework. If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a film, or the film was banned, we wouldn’t be here talking about it.”

“This [controversy] came up once the film was announced at Cannes because everybody knew Johnny had made a film in France…I don’t know why she chose him but it’s a question you should ask Maiwenn,” Fremaux added. “As for the rest, I’m the last person to be able to discuss all this. If there’s one person in this world who didn’t find the least interest in this very publicized trial, it’s me. I don’t know what it’s about. I also care about Johnny Depp as an actor.”

Maiwenn also found herself at the centre of controversy before the opening night after she admitted to spitting on a French journalist. The director is now being sued by Edwy Plenel, the editor-in-chief of Mediapart magazine, because of the incident. Maiwenn, who was sitting by herself at a restaurant, allegedly went to Plenel’s table and grabbed him by the hair before spitting in his face.

Asked on the French TV talk show “Quotidien” if she could confirm that she had assaulted Edwy Plenel, Maiwenn said, “Do I confirm that I assaulted him? Yes.”

Plenel spoke exclusively to Variety ahead of the opening night about the incident, saying, “This aggression caused more stupor than anything else. She didn’t aggress me individually, but the symbol that I represent, as the founder and director of a journal, which in France, has been on the forefront of all the #MeToo revelations.”

Depp received thunderous applause from fans when he showed up on the red carpet outside the Palais. His fans were waiting with posters, shrines and more as they screamed when they made his way over to sign autographs.

“Jeanne du Barry” is seeking U.S. distribution at the festival.

My Bond With Tornado Still Strong- Mzbel

0

Tornado and Mzbel

Mzbel says she is still friends with Nana Tornado despite claims that they have fallen out.

Earlier reports indicated that the two who are known for their alliance in fighting Afia Schwarzenegger no longer see eye to eye anymore.

And it is because of a statement Mzbel made in a viral video saying “Every love I have ever experienced in my life with people, I have paid for it. Physical cash. No one has become friends, taken me as a mother or sister with me and hasn’t taken money from me for being my friend.”

But Mzbel in response says they are still cool friends and asked Tornado to ignore rumour mongers.

According to her, she was taken out of context by her statement. She said she was not referring to Tonardo.

“The interview I granted and stated that I pay for friends to be part of my life was never about Tonardo. I beg you, it has nothing to do with Tonardo. To all those who picked my statement and specified Tonardo as my target, it was never true. Do not take me out of context and treat it as facts,” she said on Facebook.

“I am so proud of Nana Tonardo for not reacting or coming out to attack me…when two people come together as friends, enemies sit to plan their breakup. They pray for your downfall…I will urge friends not to flaunt their beautiful relationship on social media because of negative eyes…these people are quick to create confusion among friends…Tonardo remains my friend,” she added.

“As you can see we still have the belief, the teamwork, the commitment and everything. Even though they had a little bit of ups and downs at their clubs that does not really affect them in the national team,” he told the media at a press conference after Tuesday’s training.

“Their full focus is on the game [against Madagascar]. The past is the past and they are now focused on the game which is against Madagascar.

“I think every player who is invited here is really ready to give his all for the fans and for Ghanaians.”

How to make a man feel deeply attached to you

0

File photo

For most women, the hardest part about their love life isn’t meeting or establishing an attraction with men, but rather, it’s creating that deep connection and rush of strong emotions and powerful feelings that move things forward from the casual dating stage toward committed, romantic relationships.

In short, it’s understanding the key factors of how to make a guy fall deeply in love with you by first getting him to become emotionally attached.

This transition can be a pain point for many women who can’t seem to get past the point of casually dating — and who can’t, for the life of them, figure out why.

The reason for this isn’t that men are “commitment-phobes,” as so many would have you believe. Rather, it’s that a guy just hasn’t felt deeply attached to them on an emotional level.

As we all know, physical attraction fades over time, and it’s the quality of our emotional connection with each other — or the lack thereof — that makes or breaks a relationship.

What does it mean to be emotionally attached?

To understand this question you must first know what an emotional attachment is.

Emotional attachment is all about your feelings of closeness and affection in relationships that help them last over time. Emotional attachment is very important in the human connection.

How do you know if it’s love or emotional attachment?

Love that’s going to last always will rely on a healthy attachment, however, the two aren’t the same. Love is all about support and mutual giving. you don’t love someone because of what they can do or provide.

The healthy attachment that goes along with love is all about someone who can fulfill your needs for intimacy, companionship, and validation.

How do you know if someone is emotionally attached?

Signs that you could pay attention to are if he genuinely enjoys spending time with you, he is always calling or texting you often, or he’s made a commitment to not see other people and be exclusive with you.

The difference between healthy and unhealthy attachment is all about disruptions in your life.

Is being emotionally attached to someone bad?

If you’re feeling like you’re depending on their presence and attention, and constantly obsess over them, then that’s a sign of unhealthy emotional attachment.

Healthy emotional attachment is all about spending equal time having fun with your partner but also on your own. The two of you share many things in life but you both also know how to make certain things separate like having your girlfriend time, or time with family members, and self-care time. Sometimes alone time away from your partner is good for your mental health as well.

Here are 5 ways to make a guy fall deeply in love with you and get emotionally attached without playing games.

1. Date him for who he is, not for his potential.

Everyone wants to be accepted and loved for who they are, but many women make the mistake of dating a guy for his potential, i.e., the man he could become in five years (with your help, of course).

But men aren’t projects. When you have an expectation for a man to change, he feels like you’re not seeing him for who he is. For some men, it could make them feel shame like they’re not enough. If a guy feels this at the beginning of a relationship, he’ll likely feel anxious and cut and run.

When I’ve asked happily married men what it was about their wife that made them think, “Yes, she’s the one,” they’ve often said something along the lines of, “She never tried to change me.”

Know what you’re looking for in a guy and find someone who matches that description.

2. Create emotional safety for him.

Creating emotional safety means creating a space where someone can express their thoughts, feelings, and desires without feeling judged.

When men refer to a woman as being easy to talk to, they mean that they’re able to say things they typically wouldn’t share with anyone else, because they know they won’t be made to feel judged.

The next time your man is having a bad day, complaining about his frustration with a colleague, or telling you something personal, listen to him without judgment. Know when to fix a problem, when to offer help, and when to simply listen.

Sometimes people don’t want their problems fixed, they just want someone to hear them out and for them to feel secure with you.

3. Keep things light and playful.

People remember you based on the experiences you share together. The more positive and fun experiences you share, the more someone associates those feelings with you.

Men and women have different relationship timelines. Women tend to jump into relationships, eager to define their status and skipping over many of the fun aspects of dating, while men often take a little longer to decide if they want to pursue the relationship further.

It’s important to keep the beginning of a relationship light and playful, because to a guy, even if he really, really likes you, you’re still just dating.

4. Be vulnerable.

The fastest way to create emotional intimacy with someone is to drop your guard and show your vulnerability.

When you show someone an unfiltered version of yourself, you’re essentially giving them the key to exploring every intimate detail about you, and that’s a huge responsibility.

Think of what it feels like when you’ve gained someone’s trust like that. Incredible right?

When you show people your vulnerability, you creating emotional safety for a guy to do the same.

5. Give him space to chase you.

One of the most common scenarios I get asked about is what to do when a guy stops chasing you.

The answer is often, “Do nothing.”

When you’re in panic mode, you approach things from a place of fear. I see many women who panic as soon as they think a guy is pulling away. They panic when a guy doesn’t text or call one day, or if he seems a little distant at dinner.

Scared that their man is pulling away, they will overcompensate for his aloofness by trying to take control of the relationship. They’ll start calling the guy, makes all the plans, generally attempting to lead the relationship where they want it to go.

When this happens, it causes a role reversal, and without either one consciously realizing it happens, the guy becomes the one being chased.

This shift in dynamic is one many men aren’t comfortable with, and so when faced with this situation, they tend to withdraw even more.

Give the guy you’re falling for the space to chase you.

When you create a life you love, you create a life he wants to be part of.

Tinubu Gaffes Again in Osogbo, Stating That Students Won’t Spend More Than 8 Years in University

0

Ahead of the forthcoming presidential election, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress and his campaign teams were in Osogbo, Osun State, earlier today for the party’s campaign.

However, during the campaign rally, the presidential candidate of the party, Ahmed Tinubu, made a mistake in his statement while sharing his manifesto and promising the things he would do if elected as Nigeria’s president. In his statement, he vowed to ensure that the students do not spend more than eight years at the university.

He said in Yoruba dialect “For our children in school, go and write it down; call me a bastard if you spend more than 8 years in the University” “You will use eight years for your study in school.”

It will be of concern to note that the average number of years a university student spends in school is 4 years, unless they are studying for some other special course or if there are university strikes.

What is your take on the frequent gaffes by Tinubu? Share your views.

Pilot forced to make emergency landing after spotting snake on plane

0

A routine flight turned into a nightmare for pilot Rudolf Erasmus when he discovered a highly venomous Cape cobra on board.

Erasmus, who obtained his commercial license in 2016, was flying from Worcester in the Western Cape to Nelspruit with four passengers when he felt a strange sensation on his body. Upon investigation, he saw the cobra putting its head back underneath his seat.

Erasmus kept his cool and immediately declared an emergency with Johannesburg. As soon as the aircraft came to a stop, the passengers and Erasmus quickly got out, trying not to cause a panic. Erasmus later said,

“I had a moment of stunned silence, not sure if I should tell the passengers because I didn’t want to cause a panic. But obviously they needed to know at some point what was going on.”

Erasmus and his passengers were lucky to land safely in Welkom, and according to Aviation specialist and SA chief air show commentator Brian Emmenis, Erasmus displayed “the greatest skill in aviation.”

He added, “He could have panicked. He could have put that aeroplane in an uncontrollable spin. He could have rolled the aircraft with passengers falling all over the show, and with the bad weather, he could have lost sight of the ground and crashed, not only killing those on board but also people on the ground.”

Unwelcome Passenger: SA Pilot Forced to Make Emergency Landing After Finding Highly Venomous Cape Cobra on Board

Finding the Cobra

The snake was not found immediately and experts were called to the scene. Emmenis arranged for a snake catcher to come and they worked until last light to catch the snake. They even put mealie meal around the aircraft so that if the snake came out, they would see the tracks in the morning. However, the snake could not be located and the passengers opted to drive back by road.

Erasmus will fly the plane out on Wednesday and is hoping the snake found its way out. The group had opened the cowlings of the aircraft earlier in Worcester, but the snake was not found and they assumed it had slithered away. Erasmus said, “This was definitely a first and not something you get trained to handle to be honest.”

6,451 Fail GES Teacher Licensure Exams…Only 1,277 Passed | Education

0

A total of 6,451 prospective teachers failed the 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination conducted in May 2023, according to the Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr Christian Addai-Poku.

The Registrar speaking in an interview on Peace FM‘s morning show ‘Kokrokoo‘ explained “5000 out of 7000 passed Literacy, 56 percent passed Numeracy and about 54 percent passed Essential Professional Skills”.

According to him, English is very important in teaching. “Every teacher needs basic knowledge in literacy to be able to teach. So we test the prospective teachers on that. They are also tested on numeracy to be able to convert figures…”

Dr Addai Poku has advised that some of these prospective teachers undergo counselling to be sure that teaching is truly their passion.

“Some of them have completed teacher training schools, Universities, etc so the question is how they were able to complete the school if they keep failing the licensure exams but…we get these results every time…some have written one paper ten times. It’s worrying because had it not been for the licensure exams they will all enter directly into teaching”

If God reveals next president to you, pray about it and don’t engage the public – Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council to Pastors

0

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has counseled its members and religious leaders against making political prophecies concerning the winner of the upcoming 2024 general election.

The election is anticipated to be a two-horse race between John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party, according to political observers.

Apostle Immanuel Nii Okuley Tettey, the Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, emphasized in an interview with Citi News the importance of religious leaders prioritizing peace over making predictions that could potentially endanger the nation.

He urged these leaders to focus on promoting peace rather than predicting the election outcome, emphasizing the need to refrain from seeking favor from any specific political party and instead engage in actions that contribute to sustaining peace in the country.

“If God reveals to you, keep it up in prayers. If God reveals to you, keep the person up in prayer, and let’s see God fulfil His prophecies. Don’t try to put it in a public place and we’ve seen it severally in times past that so-called men of God have prophecized that his person is going to win and it didn’t happen”.

Sagrenti War: Looted treasures currently worth £2B

0

It appears Asantes would be asking for more than just gold artefacts from the British, as it has come to light that the looted treasures during the Sagrenti War of 1874 in Kumasi went beyond artefacts.

Delivering a keynote address during a symposium in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War of 1874 on February 6, 2024, Prof Tom McCaskie, the Head of the Centre of West African Studies at Birmingham University, stressed that gold dust was part of the loot.

According to him, it is a part of the history of the Asantes that is being overlooked; however, it is worth the attention.

He said a great deal of wealth accumulated by Asantehene Kofi Karikari’s predecessor, Nana Kwaku Dua I were all lost to the loot with the whole city of Kumasi burnt to ashes.

“Kwaku Dua was somebody who really, really enforced the laws of Asante. In the process, he gathered together a great deal of money in gold dust principally but also in species and other things.”

Elaborating on the said gold, the historian said the “great deal of money” was kept in three different places in Kumasi including Kumasi, Aburaso and Breman and was bequeathed to Kofi Karikari at the death of Nana Dua in 1867.

“The amount of gold contained in Adakakese alone at Kwaku Dua’s death was in excess of 400,000 ounces. This in 1867 was worth 1.2 million pounds sterling. The current value of the Adakakase is somewhere over 2 billion pounds.”

He also drew attention to the fact that no history of the war makes any form of allusion to the money.

“The attempt to get back the treasures looted from Kumasi by Garnet Wolseley in 1874, takes no account- because it cannot- of the gold or gold dust that the British must have carried away with them. We don’t know about this because it was loot, a private loot and so it is separate from the cultural artefacts that Otumfuo is trying to retrieve for Asanteman.”

This means more than artefacts could be demanded from the British but is the Kingdom ready to make such a demand?

Dr McCaskie in his address encouraged the Kingdom to fight back for all that it duly deserves.

Restoration Of Artefacts

Negotiations to retrieve stolen artefacts during the war began in 1921 after Prempeh I returned from exile and finally proved successful in the era of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the current Asantehene, as the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum have agreed to return the items, albeit on loan.

They are expected in the country in May this year.

Meanwhile, the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles which received a donation of seven pieces of the Asante artefacts from Wellcome Trust in 1964 have returned them on permanent grounds.

#OccupyBoG demo: Addison causing more harm to himself

0

Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ranking Member – Parliament Select Committee on Health

Member of Parliament (MP) for Juaboso Constituency, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has said the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor’s refusal to receive a petition from #OccupyBoG protesters will make matters worse for him.

The Minority caucus, NDC, civil society groups, and some Ghanaians hit the principal streets of Accra to call for the resignation of the BoG Governor and his two deputies for gross mismanagement.

The Minority leadership were allowed to present a petition at the precinct of the Central Bank.

The leadership of the OccupyBoG protest were met by Wing Commander Kwame Asare Boateng and a host of the Bank’s leadership, who told the protesters that Dr Addison was in a meeting with a team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and was therefore unavailable to receive the petition.

But they refused to handover the petition to him noting that, they want to present it the Governor.

Reacting to this on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday, he said the Minority and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will continue to protest until Dr. Ernest Addison receives the petition for his resignation.

“He is causing more harm to himself. Whoever advised him not to come out did not help him. Is the IMF meeting more important than Ghanaians? he fumed.

The Juaboso MP stated that, the “tens of thousands” who joined the protest show Ghanaians are tired.

To him, the demonstration against Dr. Addison will serve as a deterrent to future BoG Governors

“Yesterday I was shocked. Ever since I was born this has been the biggest. It was beyond my expectations. The turnout for the demonstration shows it was successful and that people are fed up with the government’s mismanagement. If tension is the antidote to end corruption so be it,” he said.

Mr. Akandoh commended the organizers and protestors for ensuring the protest was peaceful devoid of any casualties.

“There were provocations but we kept our calm and ensured that the demonstration was peaceful and no casualty was recorded,” he added.

Medeama SC to appoint a new coach, Adotey to stay as Technical

0

Moses Armah Parker, Medeama SC president

President of Medeama SC, Moses Armah ‘Parker’, has confirmed that the club will appoint a new head coach ahead of their campaign in the CAF Champions League.

The Yellow Mauve will participate in Africa after emerging as the champions of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season.

Adotey, who replaced Umar Rabbi midway through the season, led the team to their historic triumph.

However, ahead of their campaign in Africa in the 2023/24 season, Mr Armah, speaking in an interview, confirmed that Evans Adotey will be maintained as the technical director of the club but a licensed A coach will be appointed.

He added that the appointment will be done based on Adotey’s recommendation.

“Evans Adotey is the Technical Director of the club and he will be maintained but we will take any decision based on his recommendation because CAF demand that we appoint a Licensed A coach so if he recommends that we should appoint an expatriate coach, we will do that because we need quality to help us achieve our target in Africa,” Moses Armah ‘Parker’ told Asempa FM on the Ultimate Sports Show.

Medeama were crowned champions of the season following their 3-0 win over Tamale City at Akoon Park on Sunday.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom is leading the masses to hell with his teachings- Diana Asamoah » ™-

Osofo Kyiri Abosom, according to Diana Asamoah is not a pastor because his doctrines and interpretations of the Bible are sending Christians astray.

She asserts that the founder of Life Assembly Worship Center does not embody Christianity in his views and behaviour. Diana Asamoah further said she sees Kyiri Abosom as a herbalist and not a pastor.

Diana’s assertions come after the controversial pastor and politician on the Delay Show the Bible contains elements of fiction and believed it’s not inspired by God.

– –

Diana Asamoah, however, looked repulsed by Osofo Kyiri Abosom’s remarks, which were discussed on United on UTV this past Saturday. She also shared her opinion by saying;

“His beliefs are very different from those of Christians.” During his conversation with Delay, he made some absurd claims about the Bible and discussed his unusual views on marriage. In my opinion, he is a herbalist, not a pastor. If you want to serve God, you need to study God’s word. Scripture from God always includes some sort of guidance. “Those who reject the Bible’s divine origin are those who find it impossible to follow its instructions.”

“If you’re a Christian and you listen to any pastor, Saying the Bible was authored by humans who weren’t inspired by God is comparable to rejecting God, so any pastor who makes that claim is rejecting God. That minister shouldn’t have a congregation. Let me show him John 1:1, which says, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God; therefore, any pastor who doesn’t believe in God’s word is a herbalist.”

Diana Asamoah doubted the pastor’s honesty as a man of God and told his followers to leave.

Akufo-Addo explains renaming of Kumasi Airport to Nana Agyeman Prempeh I Int’l Airport

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, May 10, explained the rationale behind renaming the Kumasi Airport to Nana Agyeman Prempeh I International Airport.

According to him, the new name pays tribute to Asantehene Nana Agyeman Prempeh I, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping the destiny and future of the Ashanti people.

“The decision I made to rename Kumasi Airport after the 14th Asantehene was not a difficult one to make,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“One of Otumfuo Nana Agyeman Prempeh I’s most notable achievements was his efforts to modernise and centralise the administration of the Asante kingdom, introduce reforms to the traditional governing structures, establish a more centralised system of authority and strengthen the power of the Asantehene and his council of chiefs,” he said.

The President highlighted how Otumfuo Nana Agyeman Prempeh I streamlined governance and enhanced the kingdom’s ability to respond to external threats and internal challenges.

“Overall, Otumfuo Nana Agyeman Prempeh I’s leadership during a tumultuous period in Ashanti history helped to reinforce the foundations of the resilience and endurance of the kingdom. It also marked a period of Ashanti resistance led by him and the celebrated Ejisu Hemaa, Yaa Asantewaa to fight colonial annexation of Ashanti,” the President stressed.

“Prempeh I is revered as a symbol of Ashanti pride, independence and sovereignty and today through this ceremony, we are paying tribute to his legacy,” he said.

The Airport will commence full operations late this year after its commissioning, to make way for the expansion of the runway and dismantling of the old facilities.

The facility, now under the management of the Ghana Airport Company Limited, is currently undergoing equipment testing essential for both domestic and international flights.

The airport, with a capacity to accommodate over eight hundred thousand passengers annually, primarily from the northern and middle belt regions, is set to meet the increasing demand for air travel.

Interest rates begin downward trend, bills oversubscribed by GH¢739.84 million –

0

The government secured GH¢4.723.84 billion in its latest auction on December 15, 2023.

This was indicative of an oversubscription of GH¢739.84 million.

The target for this week’s auction was GH¢3984 billion.

Interest rates on treasury bills have however begun to reduce marginally after increasing to almost 34%.

But the latest figures from the Ghana Statistical Service have shown that inflation for November slowed to 26%, lower than the 29.0% interest rate on the 91-day bill.

If the inflation trend continues downward, investors can heave a sigh of relief and start enjoying the returns on their investments.

It will be in government, however, if interest rates reduce since they will now have to pay less for the monies, they borrow via treasury bills.

According to the latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana, interest rates for the 91-day and 182-day bills have increased to 29.04% and 32.49% respectively.

The 364-day bill sold at 32.49%.

The results showed that all bids tendered in this week’s auction were not accepted.

The 91-day bill saw a total subscription of GH¢3.15 billion, GH¢782.05 billion was accepted from the 182-day bill and GH¢791.75 million was accepted from the 364-day bills.

The government has set its next auction target at GH¢2.594 billion.

Western Regional Minister wants Green Ghana held for two days

0

The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has proposed allocating two days per year to the government’s Green Ghana Initiative.

This he believes is in order to preserve the country’s forest reserves.

The Green Ghana Project aims to restore Ghana’s depleted forest cover through tree planting and to mitigate the effects of climate change on the country.

Contributing to a statement on the floor of Parliament to commemorate the International Day of Forests, the Minister, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Takoradi, said the two-day event will aid in the conservation of the country’s forests.

“We started the tree planting with one day but if you look at the rate at which our forests are being destroyed, I propose that, it should be two days in a year. So, for instance, if we are able to get 10 million a day, that is 20 million trees planted because this is something the whole country has come to support. I believe that taking two days in a year to do this will be fantastic and be able to help grow more trees as quickly as possible.”

In June 2022, the Green Ghana Day was introduced as part of a national afforestation and reforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said Ghana’s timber industry is suffering as a result of the depletion of the country’s forest reserves.

Nana Akufo-Addo says Ghana has in the last 10 years lost over 100,000 acres of natural forest through human activities.

He has thus urged Ghanaians to support the project as it will go a long way to help fight climate change.

The Forestry Commission indicated that it distributed over 20 million seedlings for the 2022 Green Ghana Project, a quantity that exceeded government’s target.

“Nigerians, it’s time to think forward, it’s time to think the way out! It is time to think solution! It’s time to think about the coming generation! It’s time to think of a vibrant and forward-moving nation! It’s time to think so! I won’t say the other side.

UN World Data Forum: Vodafone’s Angela Mensah-Poku Speaks On Data For Social Good | Technology

0

Angela Mensah-Poku, Commercial & Digital Operations Director at Vodafone Ghana, has highlighted the role of data in driving social good at the United Nations World Data Forum. She shared her experiences on a successful public-private partnership, Data for Good, which aimed at using aggregated anonymised data to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

Angela emphasised the importance of collaboration between private organisations and government institutions in generating insights that contribute to community development and socio-economic policy. “When we partnered with Ghana Statistical Service alongside Flowminder, we were able to use this partnership to really drive insight-led decisions,” she said.

The partnership has led to a wide range of use cases, such as disaster planning, tracking the spread of communicable diseases, and providing critical information during the COVID-19 pandemic. Angela also mentioned that the data was used to predict the movement of people during the 2021 census in Ghana, showcasing the potential impact of aggregated anonymised data on policy and resource allocation.

Speaking on the importance of building a data-driven ecosystem, Angela said, “By having the Hewlett team on board, having Flowminder on board, we were able to create a small ecosystem. And then, with our successes with the data, we’ve been able to attract a wider set of partners, whether it’s from NGOs or private businesses, and I think that this encourages the ecosystem to grow larger and inspire more impactful global insights.”

One of the key aspects of the partnership has been capacity building and knowledge transfer. Angela emphasised the need for local organisations to have the skills and ability to access and analyse data, sharing that Vodafone Ghana’s collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service focused on the development of local skills in data science and related fields.

Angela was joined by other panellists in the discussion: Cathy Riley, Senior Partnerships Director at Flowminder Foundation; Omar Seidu, Head of Demographic Statistics & SDGs Coordinator at Ghana Statistical Service (GSS); Chris Maloney, Director General at William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; and Winnie Kamau, Data Journalist at Association of Freelance Journalists/Talk Africa.

Angela concluded by reiterating Vodafone Ghana’s purpose, “using technology to benefit humanity.” The company’s commitment to the project stems from the belief that insights derived from data can drive social good, improve critical sectors such as healthcare and education, and foster the growth of small and medium enterprises.

The UN World Data Forum, a hybrid event held both in-person and online this year, is taking place in Hangzhou, China. The forum brings together leaders and experts from various sectors to discuss the power of data in shaping the future and creating a more inclusive and sustainable world.

Crisis team in place for Oscars 2023, after the Will Smith slap

0

A “crisis team” will be introduced at this year’s Oscars, to handle any real-time incidents as a response to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the 2022 ceremony.

Academy chief executive Bill Kramer told Time magazine the new unit had “run many scenarios” in the hope they will be “prepared for anything”.

“Because of last year, we’ve opened our minds to the many things that can happen at the Oscars,” he said.

They are now quicker to react, he said.

Academy president Janet Yang previously said the response to Smith’s altercation with Rock was not swift enough.

Smith slapped the comedian after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, which she shaved following an alopecia diagnosis. After returning to his seat, the actor repeatedly shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out your [expletive] mouth” at Rock.

Despite the incident, he remained at the ceremony and later collected the best actor Oscar for his performance in King Richard.

Although Smith later resigned from the Academy, it took several more days for the organisation to make a decision on his membership. He was ultimately banned from the Oscars gala and other Academy events for 10 years.

Kramer said the new team would be able to gather “very quickly” to issue a response on the night of the show itself.

“Let’s hope something doesn’t happen and we never have to use these [plans], but we already have frameworks in place that we can modify.”

The crisis team has already been deployed, following the surprise best actress nomination for British actress Andrea Riseborough last month.

The star’s little-seen indie film To Leslie was an outsider in the Oscars race, but she secured a nomination after being championed by stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Edward Norton.

Questions were raised over whether their endorsements contravened the Oscars’ rules on campaigning.

The Academy quickly responded that the issues did “not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be rescinded”.

“You know, that happened on a Tuesday and, six days later, we were able to issue our formal statement from the board that really carved out a plan for us,” Kramer told Time.

Asked about the ability to respond to “potential surprises” at this year’s ceremony, which will take place on 12 March, Kramer said having TV presenter Jimmy Kimmel as host was an asset.

“You want someone like Jimmy on stage who is used to dealing with live TV,” he said. “Things don’t always go as planned, so you have a host in place who can really pivot and manage those moments.”

He said he felt audiences “feel very safe and engaged with his energy”.

In 2017, Kimmel steered the Oscars back on track after La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner of best picture.

“It hit me that I was the only one wearing a microphone, and I should probably go up there to sort it out,” said the chat show host in the aftermath of the incident.

Last year’s awards were hosted by US comics Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer.

“It’s so important to have a host who knows how to handle live television and a live audience,” Kramer added, saying he hoped it was “the beginning of a lovely, long new relationship” with Kimmel.

Kramer, aware of dwindling TV audience figures, added that this year’s show would be “much more immersive, much more nominee-focused, and much more focused on all of the disciplines of filmmaking”.

Akua GMB’s Brother Exposed For Allegedly Defrauding Adonko Distributor For GHc 55,000 –

0

Controversial media personality, Afia Schwarzenegger has exposed Akua GMB’s brother for allegedly defrauding a woman for the sum of GHc 55,000.

According to her, Akua GMB’s brother identified as Dada lifted some drinks amounting to GHc 55,000 from a drink distributor who also works for Dr Kwaku Oteng.

However, after receiving the drinks from the distributor, he refused to pay for them.

Afia Schwarzenegger disclosed that the incident happened in June 2023 but the young man, Dada has refused to settle the cost of the drinks and he is rather playing hide and seek with the owner.

The woman therefore got him arrested after chasing him for her cash yielded no results.

According to Afia Schwarzenegger, this is the reason why Akua GMB took to social media yesterday to call out the police.

She wrote on social media that some rich people used their power to bully the vulnerable. She added that the police are being used to arrest debtors and keep them in custody although that is not a crime.

Akua pulled a series of posts, calling out the police to do the right thing and she succeeded, per her later post.

Afia has come out to reveal why Akua GMB made all those posts.

PL: Kai Havertz scores as Arsenal thump winless Bournemouth

0

Kai Havertz scored from the spot for his first Arsenal goal

Kai Havertz scored his first goal for Arsenal with a penalty as they comfortably beat winless Bournemouth in the Premier League at Vitality Stadium.

Havertz, who has struggled since arriving from Chelsea in the summer, converted the second of two Gunners penalties to ensure their third consecutive away victory.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring, heading in the rebound from Gabriel Jesus’ effort and Martin Odegaard scored a penalty to give Mikel Arteta’s side a comfortable lead at the break.

The Gunners’ dominance continued into the second half, and after Havertz scored, Ben White headed home from Odegaard’s free-kick in added time to add gloss to a comprehensive victory for Arsenal.

Bournemouth drop into the bottom three, with no wins from their first seven league matches under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Judge throws out Trump’s ‘big lie’ defamation lawsuit against CNN

0

A federal judge on Friday dismissed Donald Trump’s lawsuit against CNN, in which the former president said the network defamed him by associating him with Adolf Hitler.

Trump argued that by using the phrase the “big lie” in reference to his unfounded claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, the network created an unfair association between him and the Nazi regime.

Hitler and Nazi minister of propaganda Joseph Goebbels used the term as a propaganda tool that involved repeating a falsehood until the public started to believe it. A quote, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it,” is often attributed to Goebbels, though it’s unclear where the comment came from.

Trump argued that the network’s references to the “big lie” created a “false and incendiary association” between him and Hitler, and caused “readers and viewers to hate, contempt, distrust, ridicule, and even fear” him. But U.S. District Judge Raag Singhal ruled that the comments did not constitute defamation.

“CNN’s statements while repugnant, were not, as a matter of law, defamatory,” Singhal wrote in his ruling. Trump initially requested a $475 million judgment against the network.

CNN declined to comment on the dismissal. Trump adviser Steven Cheung said in an email that “CNN will be held responsible for their wrongful mistreatment” of the former president and his supporters, but did not elaborate.

“We agree with the highly respected judge’s findings that CNN’s statements about President Trump are repugnant,” Cheung said.

This is the latest in the former president’s series of legal woes. Prosecutors announced additional charges against him on Thursday, adding to allegations that he hid and hoarded classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. In March, he was indicted in New York state on charges that he falsified business records in connection with hush money payments made during his 2016 campaign.

And a possible third indictment is thought to be coming soon – this one on allegations that Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election, an effort that may have led to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Trump is also under investigation in Georgia for efforts to reverse his election loss in that state. A jury in New York recently found him liable in a civil case for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll in the mid-1990s.

In the CNN case, Trump’s lawsuit pointed to five examples of times the network’s coverage referenced the “big lie,” which Trump’s attorneys said CNN refused to retract. The instances ranged from opinion articles to analysis from CNN’s editor-at-large Chris Cillizza and an on-air mention from host Jake Tapper.

In one article, the judge’s ruling says, Cillizza wrote that Trump “continued to push the Big Lie that the election was somehow stolen despite there being zero actual evidence to back up that belief.” But those references did not rise to the level of defamation, according to Singhal’s order.

“CNN’s use of the phrase ‘the Big Lie’ in connection with Trump’s election challenges does not give rise to a plausible inference that Trump advocates the persecution and genocide of Jews or any other group of people,” the judge wrote. “No reasonable viewer could (or should) plausibly make that reference.”

The 1964 Supreme Court case New York Times Co. v. Sullivan raised the bar for what could be legally considered defamation against a public figure, solidifying the precedent that a statement about a public figure must be false and its publisher must have acted with “actual malice” for it to be found defamatory. Trump asked Singhal to reconsider the precedent-setting case, which the judge said he couldn’t do, despite misgivings he has about it.

The judge, whom Trump nominated in 2019, said the state of media is far different from when the Sullivan decision was made.

“The problem is essentially two-fold. First, the complained of statements are opinion, not factually false statements, and therefore are not actionable,” he wrote of the lawsuit against CNN. “Second, the reasonable viewer, unlike when Sullivan [was] decided, no longer takes the time to research and verify reporting that often is not, in fact, news.”

Two Supreme Court justices, including Trump appointee Neil M. Gorsuch, have also suggested that the standard set by Sullivan needs review.

CNN isn’t the only source of comparisons, directly or indirectly, of Trump to members of the Nazi regime. In 2020, then-Democratic nominee Joe Biden said then-President Donald Trump was repeating a “lie” in the same way Goebbels did in the 1930s and ’40s. Biden also compared Trump to the Nazi propagandist when he called for Trump’s impeachment in 2019.

In line with its commitment to promote domestic tourism in Ghana, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has re-launched the ‘Experience Ghana, Share Ghana’ campaign to promote domestic tourism in Kwahu in the Eastern Region.

The campaign is under the Ghana Tourism Development Project (GTDP) being undertaken under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

The campaign, which is intended to stimulate domestic and regional tourism, was tied to the 2023 Kwahu Paragliding Festival to give patrons a four-day exciting experience on the Odweanoma Mountain at Atibie-Kwahu.

Speaking at a brief opening ceremony of the 15th National Paragliding Festival, the CEO of GTA, Akwasi Agyeman, said the initiative was launched a few years back to accelerate the pace of tourism through a renewed focus on both domestic and visitations from the West African region.

“We are also using this occasion to promote the ‘Experience Ghana, Share Ghana’ Campaign.  As we know, we have been very aggressive on our domestic tourism promotion over the last few years. We are kick-starting the ‘Experience Ghana, Share Ghana’ Campaign to start the process.

“As part of this year’s festival, we have been joined by some cyclists to climb the mountain. We have also added other exciting activities such as hiking, camping for those who want to spend the nights on the mountain, a bonfire dinner, and a dancing competition to project Odweanoma Mountain as a unique tourist attraction on its own where tourists can paraglide, hike, bike, camp, and have events to promote domestic tourism,” he noted.

Mr. Agyeman added that there will be another paragliding event in September this year dubbed ‘Corporate Paragliding’ in Kwahu, as part of GTA’s 50th anniversary activities. He paid tribute to the vision bearers of the paragliding festival and commended the chiefs and people of Kwahu for their support.

On his part, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, said the Kwahu Paragliding Festival plays a major role in Ghana’s domestic and international tourism.

Sekondi-Takoradi Hosts ‘Sakeva’ Festival –

A transnational cultural festival dedicated to the arts and crafts players in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis will soon take place in Sekondi, the administrative capital of the Western Region.

The event, dubbed “Sàkeva Transnational Cultural Festival,” will be used to develop and promote the artworks of local artists, the heritage sites, artefacts, and cultural celebrations in the metropolis.

The event, which is on the theme “Projecting Sekondi-Takoradi through Creative Arts,” will be organised through the Twin-Cities Sustainable Partnership Project and in collaboration with the Centre for National Culture.

The festival would serve as a platform to highlight the critical role played by the arts and crafts sector to create employment and promote tourism and the creativity of artists.

It is also intended to encourage cultural exchange and dialogue between Sekondi-Takoradi and its sister-city, Palermo, in Italy.

At a press briefing on the event which will commence on Thursday, June 27, 2024, the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Abdul Mumin-Issah said ‘Sakeva’ is an Ahanta word, which is similar to ‘Sankofa’ in Akan, meaning “go back and get it”.

He noted that the significance of the arts and crafts sector to local economic development in any city cannot be overemphasised.

“However, artists in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis continue to face numerous challenges, including inadequate workspaces, insufficient capital, high cost of lending, limited governmental support and exploitation by middlemen,” he pointed out.

He said recognising the need for multi-sectorial effort to address the challenges, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) is collaborating with identifiable departments and agencies to reposition the arts and crafts sector as a pillar for local economic development.

He noted that a Technical Team comprising representatives from the Centre for National Culture (CNC), Ghana Association of Visual Artists (GAVA), Takoradi Technical University (TTU), Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), and Ghana Export Promoting Authority (GEPA) was constituted to organise the Sàkeva Transnational Cultural Festival.

“The Sàkeva Festival would, therefore, serve as an opportunity to showcase to the world the creativity of our local artists, the employment and tourism opportunities in the arts and crafts sector in the metropolis,” he added.

He disclosed that the festival will officially be opened by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, with the support of the  Western Regional Minister and MP for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah.

He mentioned some of the highlights of the event as Arts and Crafts Exhibition, Cultural Performances, Symposium, Drawing and Cooking Competition.

He said the Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, will chair the occasion.

Manchester City plotting to sign Man United teenager Kobbie Mainoo

0

Manchester City are set to make an audacious raid on rivals Manchester United for teenager Kobbie Mainoo, according to reports.

Mainoo is one of the most highly-rated stars in the English game and he received huge plaudits in midweek after a dazzling display for the club’s Under-21 side that saw him grab two assists.

The 18-year-old also impressed during pre-season and was named man of the match in a friendly match against Arsenal before being hit with an injury setback.

Now the midfielder is looking back to his best after recovering and City are now ready to make their move despite the rivalry between the two clubs, according to Four Four Two.

There is no indication whether United would even entertain a bid from one of their fiercest rivals, the report adds, and said there was no telling how much City would be willing to spend to lure him.

But it added that Pep Guardiola’s outfit had a commitment to developing young, talented stars – while United were suffering financial restrictions over financial fair play.

The Stockport starlet made his senior debut against Charlton in the Carabao Cup last season and won the FA Youth Cup with the academy.

He later played his first-ever game in the Premier League by coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 win against Leicester City.

Should City manage to complete a shock move for Mainoo, it would add to United’s woes after a turbulent season that has seen them lose five of their first ten Premier League games – including back-to-back 3-0 home losses against City and Newcastle.

However, in his recent press conference ahead of United’s trip to Fulham, Ten Hag cut an optimistic figure despite the rising pressure on his shoulders.

‘They (players) are positive,’ he said. ‘They want to put this right and we know the standards here. We have to match them every day, we’ve had two big setbacks, but we’ll fight back.

‘The dressing room is strong, the staff are strong and this manager is strong.’

He also stressed that his players were ‘hard to beat’ – despite their recent record providing evidence to the contrary.

‘I’m convinced in the long-term, they will be hard to beat, and they know how to do it,’ Ten Hag added.

NPP acclaims Abu Jinapor as parliamentary candidate today

All is set for the official acclamation of the Member of Parliament(MP) for Damongo Constituency, Samuel Abu Jinapor as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate.

Hundreds of delegates are currently trickling into the Damongo Community Centre, the venue for the ceremony amidst excitement and jubilation.

At the close of nominations on Monday, December 25, 2023, Mr Jinapor who doubles as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources was the only person who had filed his nomination in the constituency.

Excitement

This is the second time Samuel Abu Jinapor is going to run unopposed as the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Damongo constituency.

Constituency dynamics

Damongo is one of the seven constituencies in the Savannah Region, which has traditionally been held by the opposition National Democratic Congress since 1993.

In 2020, Jinapor contested for the first time against the incumbent MP Adam Mutawakilu, who had been their lawmaker since 2013.

In a turn of events that shocked pundits, Jinapor won the elections for the first time for the New Patriotic Party, with over 54% of the valid votes cast, becoming the first NPP legislator of the area since the inception of the Fourth Republic.

Following his election, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, a position he has held till date.

After filing his nomination, Jinapor said he was humbled by the confidence reposed in him by the party in the constituency.

He said the Damongo constituency is a very strategic seat and crucial to breaking the eight for the NPP.

He pledged his commitment to work with the party and the constituents to ensure that the NPP retains the seat in Parliament and deliver victory for NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. ‎

Persons With Kyphosis Deserve Respect

0

Tsotsoo in a photograph with Emmanuel

Kyphosis, also known as hunchback or dowager’s hump, is a medical condition characterized by an excessive outward curvature of the spine, leading to a hunched or rounded posture. It most commonly affects the upper back or thoracic spine, resulting in a noticeable hump in the upper back.

The spine has a natural curve that allows people to stand upright and provides balance. This excessive curve is called “hyperkyphosis.” Hyperkyphosis can be caused by various factors, including poor posture, osteoporosis, degenerative conditions affecting the discs and vertebrae, neuromuscular disorders, and birth defects. It can cause back pain, stiffness, limited mobility, and difficulties in severe cases.

At age ten, I realized that my cousin Emmanuel, suffered from Kyphosis. My first glance at him made me feel scared and I could not even talk to him at that point. However as days passed by, my relationship with him grew from the initial stranger to one that is more friendly.

The community mocked Emmanuel and called him names like “afutse”, “Akpatse” due to his condition and some family members avoided him.

In my quest to know more about what led to his condition and how he has survived with the stigmatization, Emmanuel revealed that he was not born with the condition but rather on one faithful Sunday morning when his mother had taken him to church, she left him lying down since he was sleeping.

But to his mother’s surprise, a black goat stepped on his chest, making him scream. He added that days after the incident, his condition became serious and he needed medical attention. However, his father restricted him from hospitalization because of his faith.

“I was neglected by my father and some of my family members because they thought I was a curse,” he said. He also added that his condition progressed and his health issues became abnormal, which led to him being paralyzed.

“Leaving with a single parent is a difficult situation since my feeding, schooling, and other necessities have become impossible to cover. Attending school became difficult for me because my mother couldn’t afford it. But with the help of the ‘Hope for All Disability Foundation,’ I got enrolled in school.

Dr. Theophilus Thompson, a Physician at the Manna Mission Hospital indicated that Kyphosis is the abnormal curvature of the back. He also said that there is a normal Kyphosis in the spine. There is a degree of curvature allowed but when the curvature exceeds normal, it becomes problematic.

Dr. Thompson also established that some of the causes of Kyphosis could be congenital factors which usually occur during pregnancy or as a result of neuro muscular problems which is also a disease that affects the individual’s muscles.

Dr. Thompson indicated that some of the preventive measures include the intake of Folic acid during pregnancy which helps in the development of the foetus and prevent congenital Kyphosis.

He added that for posture, some postural exercises are done to correct the movement and sitting posture of the person. Also for older people with osteoporosis, hormonal replacement therapy is done to correct the condition.

“We need to embrace people with Kyphosis and take them into our social life and avoid victimizing them since they have difficult in performing certain tasks,” he said.

People with obvious Kyphosis usually can be victimized. People see them as people with disability and if they are children, they may be subjected to bullying by other colleagues. Also, because of the difficulty in performing some tasks, they may not be involved in certain activities that other people may be involved.

Despite its physical effects, Kyphosis does not define the person. In fact, individuals with this condition often possess unique and inspiring personalities that deserve to be highlighted.

There is a need for society to desist from making persons suffering from the condition less of a human. It is about time we embrace them to society and treated them with the needed respect and care.

Black Stars Is Suffering Because You Didn’t Appreciate Me When I Was Playing – Asamoah Gyan Brags on Twitter –

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has been heavily slammed by Ghanaians as he appeared to be jubilating over the Black Star’s Afcon exit.

Asamoah Gyan after Ghana was kicked out, lambasted Ghanaians for being ungrateful to him and insinuated that the current suffering of the team is due to him not being appreciated by Ghanaians.

Gyan shared a video with a message which read – “Learn to be grateful and appreciate those around you,”

In the video, a troll is seen protecting a town from impending danger but the townspeople attack him instead of appreciating what he was doing.

Out of anger, he let the danger pass and it quickly obliterated the town.

“Abedi Pele won’t even post this video, you really hate the national team and you want to see them fail soo bad to make your big statement. You can’t be a role model to any of these players. Shameful behaviour,” one netizen said.

Can Morning Water Intake Prevent Headache?

0

According to a piece published by Healthline, Consuming water upon waking in the morning has become a common practice for those who believe it offers various health advantages. Although the validity of many of these health claims has been debated, one question remains: can morning hydration help prevent headaches? This article, based on information from the Cleveland Clinic, aims to explore the potential link between pre-bedtime water intake and headache prevention. Stay tuned to discover more.

How Does Drinking Water Impact Headaches?

According to research, severe dehydration can lead to migraine headaches. Suffering from migraine headaches can disrupt your daily routine due to intense head pain. However, studies have indicated that maintaining proper hydration may mitigate or prevent migraine attacks.

Individuals who consume water upon waking up might safeguard themselves against unnecessary headaches or migraines later in the day. Since the body relies on water to function optimally, and many people avoid water before bedtime due to nighttime urination concerns, drinking water in the morning appears to be a healthy practice.

People who bribe you are not ready to serve – Dr Asaah Asante

0

File photo

Political scientist, Dr Emmanuel Asaah Asante says it is silly to assume that politicians who pay electorates for their votes will be willing to attend to their needs when voted into office.

Speaking on the Joy Super Morning Show following the just-ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries in constituencies with incumbent MPs, he bemoaned the blatant monetization of the primaries.

According to him, the far-reaching impact of political monetisation in Ghana is eroding the country’s democracy.

“Because [the] message that you’ll expect them to give you in terms of your needs, in terms of your interests, all will be shoved under the carpet and that whoever can pay more will carry the day.

“If we continue on this trajectory I’m afraid this democracy is going to suffer a lot of setbacks,” he said.

He noted that once electorates accept money for their votes, the erstwhile democratic process becomes rigged against them.

“You will have people that you have voted for but they will go to parliament, do what they want or they’ll have power, they’d do what they want and anytime you’d want to show them the exit they’d bring money and cool the people down.

“Is that the democracy that we’re fighting and trying to maintain since 1992? Obviously, the answer is no,” he said.

Dr Asaah Asante has urged for more advocacy to break the monetization of politics in Ghana to safeguard the democracy of this country.

“So we have to continue the advocacy, by telling people that anybody who comes to serve you, politicians are servants and I can’t understand how you allow a servant who wants to serve you to bribe you to serve you.

“If we understand it from this perspective, we can make a lot of sense out of that – anybody who brings anything to you in terms of resources, in terms of money whatever to influence you that person is not ready to serve the society. These are people we must chase them out of the political system,” he said.

Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings tells her side of the story –

0

The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has addressed one of the famous allegations against her father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, which involved a supposed boyfriend of hers whose head was shaved with a broken bottle by soldiers, leaving him bald.

The supposed boyfriend, Selassie O’Sullivan-Djentuh, in an account to the British Home Office when seeking asylum in the United Kingdom, alleged that he was brutalized by soldiers in 2000 after breaking off his relations with a young Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.

“I was driven to the Castle, the seat of government. I was dragged out of the van and beaten again. I was shaved with an old rusty blade and later with a broken bottle. I was told that the President had ordered my hair to be brought to him. They said the President had also ordered them to kill me and dump my body in the sea. I know that my hair was collected. I do not know whether it was actually taken to the President.

“I was questioned about my relationship with Zanetor and how many times I slept with her. I was beaten up several times throughout my detention. I was questioned about my knowledge of the Rawlings’ estate (their properties and buildings), and I told them I knew nothing. The guards insisted Zanetor had told me certain secrets, and they wanted to know how much I knew. W.O. Budu alleged since my mother had gone on air about my abduction, they could not do what they had planned, but they could chase me to any country I run to and finish me off,” part of Selassie’s five-page statement at the British Home Office reads.

Speaking on the matter for the first time in an interview with Accra-based GHOne TV on June 27, 2024, the Korle Klottey legislator categorically stated that the incident had nothing to do with her father.

She narrated how the allegations took a toll on her because she was really young, and there was no opportunity for the truth to be told to Ghanaians.

She indicated that at the time the incident happened, she had broken off her relationship with Selassie, adding that the incident was about a land dispute.

“My dad had nothing to do with that. The story that I had heard regarding how that all happened was that there was some land issue, and there was some military person involved. At the time, we were not even friends. This was long after I’d gone my way, and he had gone his way. So, this was a bit strange, actually, but politics again, you know, I think it was just a perfect story for the time.

“That bothered me a lot because, at the time, I felt quite unfairly treated because the fact is, the story wasn’t true, and no room was being made for the true version of the story to be told because nobody really wanted to hear it at the time. And, I mean, I was young at the time, you know, doing my little ‘chrife’ thing on the side. And this was a bit devastating, actually, for me.”

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings added that the allegation had a psychological effect on her and has helped shape the way she does politics.

“That is one of the things that has made me very particular about how I go about my politics. And it’s one of those experiences that really informed my behavior as a public figure because I feel that in the path to where it is you want to get to, you can be decent. You can choose to disagree with people, you can choose to not be on the same page, but to go down the path of lies and denigrating people, that’s something I’m totally against.”

‘Cedi depreciation is a ritual problem’ – Deputy Finance Minister –

0

A Deputy Minister for Finance, Stephen Amoah has stated that the depreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi against the US dollar is a ritual problem of every administration.

He highlighted the persistent depreciation of the local currency as a deep-rooted issue tied to the country’s import-heavy economy.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, Dr. Amoah emphasized that the demand for the US dollar, driven by high levels of importation, necessitates a national approach to resolving the cedi’s depreciation challenge beyond the capabilities of any single administration.

Dr. Amoah assured the public that if Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is elected president, he will spearhead the development of a comprehensive, long-term strategy to stabilize the cedi.

“Cedi depreciation is a ritual problem. It’s not the fault of one particular government… It’s an issue that requires nationalistic attention.

“As long as we continue to be an importer-driven economy, we’ll face challenges with the cedi. However, Inshallah, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will create a sustainable framework to address this issue if he comes into office next year,” he said.

The Interbank forex rates from the Bank of Ghana as of May 29, 2024, showed that the Ghana Cedi was trading against the dollar at a buying price of 14.0080 and a selling price of 14.0220.

At a forex bureau in Accra, the dollar is being bought at a rate of 14.80 and sold at 15.00.
