Zoomlion had no contract under my watch – Former YEA CEO breaks silence

Former CEO of YEA, Kofi Agyepong Former CEO of YEA, Kofi Agyepong

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Kofi Agyepong, has clarified that Zoomlion Ghana Limited held no active contract with the agency for the sanitation module at the time of his departure from office in January 2025.

In a statement titled “Setting the Records Straight – YEA Sanitation Module,” Agyepong responded to recent comments by current YEA CEO Malik Basintale, who described the sanitation contract with Zoomlion as exploitative and unjustifiable.

Agyepong revealed that, as of his departure on January 25, 2025, the YEA had not renewed its contract with Zoomlion, asserting that the module required a complete overhaul.

“Like you, I have always maintained that the sanitation module needed a complete overhaul — not only to ensure better welfare for our hardworking beneficiaries, but also because the functions being carried out overlapped with those of the local assemblies,” he stated.

He added that his position was supported by board meeting minutes and official documents, emphasizing that his decision was based on principle rather than politics. “We can’t be doing something that the assemblies are already doing,” he wrote.

The former CEO commended Basintale’s bold stance on the issue and called for a national dialogue on reforming the sanitation model.

“What we need now is not blame, but bold action guided by facts, respect for the workers, and a firm commitment to value for money,” he stressed.

Agyepong’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny of the YEA-Zoomlion sanitation arrangement, which has been criticized by civil society voices including journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni for allegedly shortchanging sanitation workers while enriching the contractor.

The statement signals a rare continuity of purpose across two administrations and adds weight to growing calls for a restructuring or complete cancellation of the controversial sanitation contract.

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South in the Greater Accra region, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuje, has urged health professionals at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to forge a closer relationship with President John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, he believes the president has the commitment and capacity to address the hospital’s longstanding health system challenges.

Speaking at the 2024 Annual Performance Review of the hospital held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, Vanderpuje stated, “We have to support our professionals in the health delivery system. I know our President very well, I know where his heart is when it comes to health and development of this country.

“He has done it before, and I am urging our professionals to get closer to him.”

He added that the innovations and constraints shared at the review must be brought to the attention of key decision-makers.

“If the Minister of Health, Finance, and the President are able to see these things I am seeing today, I am sure they will make a commitment,” he noted.

The Annual Performance Review, themed “Comprehensive KBTH performance assessment towards value-based patient-centered care”, was marked by major announcements from the hospital’s leadership.

Acting CEO of the hospital Dr Frank Owusu-Sekyere described 2024 as a “year of milestones and momentum,” highlighting significant projects including the commissioning of a €38 million Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence, a digital OPD system, and the near-completion of renovations to the maternity block.

Despite these strides, Dr Owusu-Sekyere pointed out ongoing challenges including unstable electricity supply, delays in NHIS reimbursements, and the rising cost of key medical equipment.

“Only three of eight elevators are currently being replaced,” he said.

The hospital recorded over 506,000 patient visits in 2024 yet saw a slight decline in surgeries and deliveries.

Vascular surgeon Dr Lily Wu expressed pride in the hospital’s ability to perform advanced surgeries.

“We are able to do operations not done anywhere else in West Africa, reducing the need for patients to travel to Europe or America,” she said.

“Sometimes we don’t even need a blood transfusion or full anesthesia.”

Professor J.E. Mensah, Acting Director of the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence, however, lamented the high cost of some procedures.

“A laser fibre used to break stones can cost as much as GH¢10,000, which most patients cannot afford,” he revealed.

Any country that relies entirely on IMF policy is not mature enough

0

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simmons Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simmons

Policy analyst Bright Simons has delivered a blistering critique of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) limitations in holding Ghana’s government accountable, revealing three structural barriers that prevent effective oversight.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News, the IMANI Africa Vice President argued that expecting the IMF to be a strict fiscal disciplinarian is “fundamentally unrealistic” due to its very nature as an intergovernmental organization.

“The IMF is an intergovernmental organization. To expect the IMF to play the role of a serious critic of the government, a serious scrutinizer of government is unrealistic.

“There’s a limit to it because at the end of the day, Ghana will also go to the board of the IMF governor represented and then try and push its case. So there’s an extent to which it can be an effective check on the government,” he said.

Simons also identified some other critical flaws in the current arrangement. He pointed to the IMF’s conflicting roles as both program designer and evaluator, creating institutional pressure to declare success regardless of actual outcomes.

“The IMF itself designs the programs for recovery. So the IMF itself has a very strong incentive to say the program is doing well because the IMF is part of the design. So to expect the IMF to be too loud and negative is just really unrealistic,” he added.

Simmons also highlighted the Fund’s need to project stability to attract investment, making it reluctant to issue negative assessments that might scare away capital.

“Part of the IMF’s success formula is to get other parties to think that things are doing well enough for the economy to truly recover. So the IMF signals to the investor community, other MDBs, etc. That things are looking good. So come and put money in Ghana.

“So if the IMF is doing that at the same time, because that’s part of the success formula of the program, how can the IMF be too negative?” he said.

The analyst saved his sharpest critique for Ghana’s own approach, arguing that mature economies don’t rely on external validation.

“Anyone that relies entirely on IMF policy, surveillance or whatever is not mature enough,” he said.

It’s sad that 4 months after going into opposition, NPP can’t pay its workers – Ken Agyapong

Former NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong Former NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed his disappointment with the party’s inability to pay its workers four months after going into opposition.

Ken Agyapong, a former flagbearer hopeful of the party, said that the party not being able to pay its workers or not having the resources to run its activities was a worry.

He, however, indicated that opposition political parties having financial difficulties is a common trend in Ghana’s political landscape.

“It is not only unique to the NPP, but every party, when they go to opposition, they face financial or resource challenges. So, I came from Madagascar, and I heard the news that for four months, we’ve not been able to pay salaries and even money to work.

“So, I decided I’ll come and give my widow’s mite as a contribution to help run the administration of the party,” Ken said at the NPP Headquarters in Accra when he was donating money to the party on Friday, April 25, 2025.

He added; “We just came to opposition in about four months, and it’s sad that we cannot run the party, which I think is not good enough. So, my message is simple. I’ve come this morning to give my widow’s mite as a contribution to enable you to run the party.”

The former Assin Central legislator reportedly donated GH¢1 million to the party.

The former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has expressed the view that Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo is likely to be removed from office following her suspension.

Sharing his thoughts on the ongoing developments during an interview on Woezor TV on Friday, April 25, 2025, Ansa-Asare stated that, based on his observations and close monitoring of the situation, the committee set up to investigate the petitions seeking Justice Torkornoo’s removal will likely implicate her. In his opinion, she will not come out unscathed.

“Without mincing words, I think the CJ will not come out well at all, having regard to what is going on. The writing is on the wall. The CJ will be removed. I don’t think I’ll be doing myself any credit if, after observing the landscape, I maintain that the Chief Justice will come out clean and therefore keep her job. I don’t think so,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Ghana’s Chief Justice and head of the judiciary, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Commenting on the issue on Peace FM on Thursday, April 24, 2025, Miracles Aboagye remarked that the Mahama administration could go as far as removing all the Supreme Court judges and appointing NDC stalwarts, including Kwamena Ahwoi and First Lady Lordina Mahama, to the bench.

“When this issue started, I was eager to hear their (NDC’s) justification for what they were doing. I listened to my senior man, and I realized that perhaps we should stop discussing this matter. If they want, they can remove all the Supreme Court judges and appoint Lordina Mahama, Kwamena Ahwoi, and all the NDC bigwigs as Supreme Court judges. Maybe that will satisfy them.”

“Do you recall that these are the same people whose forbearers supervised the kidnapping and murder of three High Court judges? These are the same group of people. To this day, we haven’t uncovered the full truth behind those events. In fact, some members of the current NDC government and party were alive then. Some of them were even members of that regime. That incident was gruesome. No petition was written for anyone’s removal, they just vanished into thin air.”

“So, I think the Chief Justice is fortunate that a gun wasn’t pointed to her head to remove her and that she is still alive.”

Wontumi suggested that the NDC has become envious of his ambition to contest for the position.

High-Speed Line Kenitra-Marrakech- A Qualitative Boom In The Moroccan Rail Transport System

0

‎‎‎‎‎Under His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s impetus, rail infrastructure is being strengthened with the launch of a MAD 96 billion structuring program.
Extension of the high-speed rail line to Marrakech, modernisation of the national fleet, development of public transport networks in 3 conurbations and emergence of an industrial ecosystem: a strategic vision for sustainable, inclusive and competitive mobility, driven by a future-oriented continental ambition.
His Majesty King Mohammed VI launched the Rabat-Agdal train station, the 430-kilometer Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Line.
The Kenitra-Marrakech High Speed Rail Line project reflects the Sovereign’s enlightened vision of improving the national rail service, and is in line with the Kingdom’s strategic orientations, under the impetus of His Majesty the King, in terms of sustainable development, particularly promoting low carbon footprint collective mobility solutions.
It also illustrates Morocco’s firm determination to carry on the development of the national rail network, so that it can fully play its role as the backbone of a sustainable and inclusive transport system.
This structuring project, with a budget of MAD 53 billion (excluding rolling stock), is part of an ambitious program mobilizing an overall investment of MAD 96 billion, which also includes the acquisition of 168 trains at a cost of MAD 29 billion, intended to renew the existing fleet of the Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) and support development projects, as well as maintaining performance for MAD 14 billion, enabling in particular the development of 3 metropolitan transport networks in the Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech conurbations.
The Kenitra-Marrakech High Speed Rail Line project provides for creating a high-speed rail link between the cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech, serving the airports of Rabat and Casablanca.
With this new project, travel times will be 1h between Tangier and Rabat, 1h40 between Tangier and Casablanca and 2h40 between Tangier and Marrakech (saving over 2 hours). The project will also link Rabat to Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport in 35 minutes, while serving the new Benslimane stadium. A high-speed service is also planned between Fez and Marrakech, with a journey time of 3h40 (with high-speed trains running on the classic line from Fez to the north of Kenitra before continuing on the new high-speed line to Marrakech).
The Kenitra – Marrakech High Speed Rail Line project notably includes the design and construction of a new line between Kenitra and Marrakech, designed for a speed of 350 km/h, and improvements to the terminals of Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech (works on operating tracks), railway equipment, the construction of new high-speed stations, local train stations and the refurbishment of existing stations, as well as the construction of a maintenance center for trains in Marrakech.
The Kenitra-Marrakech High Speed Rail Line extension will free up capacity on the conventional network, enabling the development of a major local metropolitan train service to meet part of the public transport needs of the inhabitants of the Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech conurbations. This new service is a genuine response to the challenges of urban mobility in these three metropolitan areas, and offers a number of advantages in terms of punctuality, service quality and sustainability.
To coincide with the launch of the new Kenitra-Marrakech High Speed Line project, ONCF is launching an unprecedented program to acquire 168 new trains, with the aim of reinforcing and rejuvenating the entire fleet of passenger rolling stock.
Mobilizing an investment of MAD 29 billion, this acquisition program will help to achieve gains in operational performance, strengthen regional services, and meet the increase in traffic expected by 2030. This acquisition covers 18 high-speed trains for extension projects, 40 trains for line services, 60 fast shuttle trains and 50 for the public transport network in the three conurbations.
This ambitious rolling stock acquisition program will also enable the emergence of an industrial rail ecosystem. With a local integration rate of over 40%, the program reflects a strong commitment to Moroccan business and skills, and will certainly have positive implications in terms of supporting the national economy, reducing transport costs and promoting sustainable development.
The program has two main components: the first industrial component provides for setting up and starting-up an industrial train manufacturing unit and developing an ecosystem of suppliers and subcontractors. The second component involves the creation of a joint venture between the manufacturers and ONCF to provide routine and industrial maintenance of trains, while keeping costs under control.
Over a 10-year period, this program will train specialized human resources and create several thousand direct and indirect jobs.
With the new modernization project, the entire Moroccan rail network is undergoing a real renaissance, involving not only the extension of the high-speed network to Marrakech, but also the modernization, reinforcement and rejuvenation of the ONCF train fleet, as well as the creation of a rail-based mass transit network and a promising new industrial ecosystem.
This significant investment and modernization project for the railway network was executed with the expertise of renowned international companies, including the French company Alstom for high-speed rolling stock, the Spanish company CAF for inter-city trains (200 km/h), and the South Korean company Hyundai Rotem for local metropolitan trains, all secured under preferential financing conditions. CAF African Schools Football Championship: U-15 Boys fall short in semifinal clash against Tanzania

0

Ghana’s U15 boys’ team saw their dreams of reaching the final of the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championship  come to an end on Friday afternoon following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Tanzania in the semifinals at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The tightly contested encounter, played over two 20-minute halves, saw Tanzania make an immediate impact, scoring within the opening minute to seize an early lead. Despite Ghana’s determined efforts to find an equalizer, the Tanzanian defense stood resolute, effectively shutting down any comeback attempts.

The loss was a bitter blow for the young Ghanaian side, who had been in scintillating form during the group stages, winning all three of their matches and entering the semifinals with high hopes of going all the way.

While the defeat ends their quest for the title, the team still has an opportunity to finish the tournament on a high when they compete in the bronze medal match.  They will take on Uganda in Saturday’s third-placed match at the University of Ghana.

After a promising campaign marked by energy, skill, and team spirit, the focus now shifts to securing a podium finish.

Ghana will aim to regroup quickly, take the positives from their journey so far, and end their tournament with a performance to be proud of.

‘Transition To Chip-Embedded Passports Ghanaian-Led’

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

At the rollout of Ghana’s chip-embedded passport last Wednesday, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said, “I am particularly delighted that the transition to chip-embedded passports has been led by Ghanaians.”

He added that “it is refreshing to highlight that the commercial aspects of our reforms were all carried out through competitive procurement processes in strict compliance with Ghana’s procurement laws and in the ultimate interest of transparency and value for money.”

Two local partners won the bid, DAILY GUIDE has gathered.

The minister served notice that any unscrupulous conduct, including the phenomenon of “goro boys” would not be tolerated. “That era has come to an end.  The so-called quota has not been factored into the design of this new system,” he added.

After several months of the engagements with private partners, the chip-embedded passport was launched by the previous government on December 2, 2024 but could not be rolled out, he said.

“We have worked closely with international and local partners as well as experts to ensure that our passport meets the highest standards of security and authenticity,” he continued.

This, he said, “aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, specifically ICAO Document 9303, which provides guidelines for implementing Machine-Readable Travel Documents (MRTDS) and ePassports.

This modernisation effort, according to him, “is designed to enhance border security, reduce identity fraud, and streamline international travel for Ghanaians.”

He announced the integration of “our online passport application, payment, and appointment booking system to allow citizens to initiate their applications from anywhere, so that there will be no congestion at Passport Offices.”

The system, he said, “is now linked to the National Identification Authority (NIA), so all personal information of applicants is transferred directly from the NIA system to the Passport Office system to ensure seamless verification of applicant’s Ghana Card Number and biometric details.”

“We will from today, April 23, 2025 elevate our nationwide sensitisation campaign to educate the public on the features, application processes and benefits of the new chip-embedded passport,” the minister said.

“A 24-hour passport service with door-to-door delivery will be commencing on April 28, 2025, to ensure greater convenience, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Applicants can now have their passports delivered securely to their doorstep,” he announced, adding that “applicants must provide accurate addresses and contact details to facilitate seamless delivery.”

He paid tribute to his immediate past predecessors, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh and Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, “for their tireless efforts and dedication, which have been invaluable in bringing this project to fruition.”

Why Ghana’s youth are turning away from agric and the missed opportunities

0

Agriculture has long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, yet an alarming trend is emerging—Ghanaian youth are increasingly uninterested in farming.

This growing apathy has serious economic consequences, particularly as the country grapples with rising inflation, unemployment, and food insecurity.

But beyond the challenges, agriculture presents untapped opportunities that could transform the economy and create sustainable jobs for young people.

Food inflation

Ghana’s inflation remains a major concern, with food prices driving much of the increase. Recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows that food inflation hit 27.8% in December 2023, significantly contributing to overall inflation, which stood at 23.2%.

The sharp rise in food prices is partly due to the country’s heavy reliance on imported agricultural products.

Ghana continues to spend millions of dollars importing staple foods such as rice, wheat, poultry, and vegetable oil.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the country spent over $1.3 billion on food imports in 2022 alone, putting pressure on the cedi and making food even more expensive for Ghanaians. With better agricultural investment and local production, Ghana could reduce its reliance on imports and stabilize food prices.

Youth unemployment and potential of agric

Unemployment remains a major issue in Ghana, particularly among young people. Recent statistics indicate that 14.7% of Ghana’s labor force is unemployed, with youth unemployment even higher. Yet, agriculture, which employs over 30% of Ghana’s workforce, remains largely ignored by young people despite its potential to provide stable incomes and economic opportunities.

One major reason for this is the perception that farming is a low-status, labor-intensive job meant for the poor or uneducated. Many young people view agriculture through the lens of smallholder farmers who struggle with low productivity, lack of mechanization, and poor market access. This negative image has discouraged many from exploring careers in the sector.

How Ghana is losing out to neighboring countries

Ghana’s failure to tap into its agricultural potential has allowed neighboring countries like Burkina Faso to dominate key markets. Today, a large percentage of the onions and tomatoes sold in Ghanaian markets come from Burkina Faso. Even after factoring in production costs, transportation, and cross-border trade expenses, Burkinabe farmers still make profits in Ghana.

The question then arises: If farmers from Burkina Faso can produce and sell these crops profitably in Ghana, why can’t Ghanaian farmers do the same? The answer lies in poor investment in irrigation, lack of structured market systems, and inadequate financial support for agriculture.

The Irrigation Problem: Why Agriculture is a High-Risk Venture

A major reason for Ghana’s agricultural underperformance is its over-reliance on rain-fed farming. Without proper irrigation systems, many farmers cannot cultivate crops all year round, making agriculture a risky venture that financial institutions are reluctant to support.

As of 2023, only 2% of Ghana’s total cultivated land is under irrigation, according to the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority. This is a significant challenge, as climate change continues to affect rainfall patterns. Without a serious investment in irrigation, agriculture will remain unattractive to both youth and investors.

Learning from history: How Acheampong made agric attractive

One of the most successful agricultural initiatives in Ghana’s history was Operation Feed Yourself, led by Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong in the 1970s.

With the help of Colonel P.K. Barnasko, Acheampong implemented policies that encouraged local food production, making agriculture a central part of national development.

The initiative provided incentives for farmers, improved access to inputs, and promoted self-sufficiency in food production.

If similar policies were revived with modern technologies and private sector involvement, Ghana could significantly boost agricultural productivity and attract more youth to the sector.

Bridging the knowledge gap in agric

Another issue preventing youth from entering agriculture is the lack of knowledge and training. Unlike other industries where entrepreneurs take time to research before starting a business, many people enter agriculture blindly. They assume that if uneducated, peasant farmers can succeed, then anyone can farm—leading to high failure rates among young farmers.

Agricultural training programs, mentorship schemes, and school farms should be reintroduced to equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in farming.

Regulating agric resources: The case of poultry manure

Ghana has several untapped agricultural resources that could make farming more cost-effective. One such resource is poultry manure, which is a cheaper and more effective alternative to inorganic fertilizers. However, poultry manure is currently being exported to Ivory Coast in large quantities with little regulation.
By properly managing and utilizing poultry manure locally, Ghanaian farmers could significantly cut down on fertilizer costs, making local food production more profitable and competitive.

Role of schools and local authorities

The absence of school and community farms has further widened the gap between young people and agriculture. The Ministry of Education and district assemblies should take steps to reintegrate farming into the education system. This would not only provide practical agricultural training but also shift the negative perception of farming as a career.

Path forward

Ghana’s youth must recognize the vast opportunities that exist in agriculture. However, for this to happen, the government, financial institutions, and private sector must invest in making agriculture attractive, profitable, and sustainable. This means investing in irrigation, structured market systems, knowledge transfer, and innovative policies that make farming a viable career choice.

If Ghana fails to act now, the consequences will be dire—not just for food security but for employment, inflation, and economic stability. The time to invest in agriculture is now.

Suspect in GH₵1.3m Momo robbery remanded by Nalerigu court

0

A district court in Nalerigu, North East Region, has remanded into police custody Waliu Fazazi, a suspect in a mobile money robbery case, into police custody to assist with ongoing investigations.

The accused was arraigned before the court on Friday, April 25, 2025, following a robbery incident that occurred on April 23, 2025, at Bunkpurugu.

According to police reports, Waliu Fazazi, in collaboration with others who are currently on the run, attacked a mobile money vendor and made away with an amount of GH₵1,300,000.00.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused initially approached the vendor under the guise of withdrawing GH₵15,000.00, claiming it was being sent by his brother but was delayed due to network issues.

In the course of the transaction, two masked men, one armed, suddenly appeared and demanded the vendor’s bag containing the cash. The assailants reportedly fired warning shots before fleeing the scene on a motorbike.

Following his appearance in court, Waliu Fazazi was remanded into custody to reappear on May 9, 2025, as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the police have urged the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects currently at large.

CJ’s suspension: We’ll resist attempts by Mahama to politicise judiciary

0

The Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has stated that the party will resist attempts by President John Dramani Mahama to politicise the judiciary.

His remarks come in response to President Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, following the establishment of a prima facie case based on three petitions seeking her removal.

The decision, made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution in consultation with the Council of State, has led to the formation of a five-member committee to investigate the matter.

In reaction, a coalition of political parties, including the NPP, has announced plans to stage a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, to protest the suspension.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One Newsroom’s Charles Owusu Kumsi on Friday, April 24, Mr. Krobea Asante said they will not rest until the suspension is withdrawn.

“We’re saying that it’s about time we protect the integrity of our judicial system. We will not allow President Mahama to politicise such an institution. Because it’s going to be alarming for all of us.

“We’re going to ensure we stage one of the biggest demonstrations. We want to send a caution to the government that we will not rest until this unlawful suspension or removal of the Chief Justice is withdrawn. In fact, we will move from region to region,” he stated.

UK deports 43 immigration offenders to Ghana and Nigeria

0

The United Kingdom has deported 43 individuals to Ghana and Nigeria as part of its heightened efforts to strengthen border security under its “Plan for Change” immigration policy.

The group included 15 failed asylum seekers and 11 foreign nationals who had completed prison sentences in the UK. Seven of the individuals reportedly returned voluntarily. The charter flight, which took off on Thursday, marks the second deportation operation to Ghana and Nigeria since the current government assumed office, bringing the total number of returnees to the two countries to 87.

UK officials say the operation reflects a growing partnership between the British government and its counterparts in Accra and Abuja to curb irregular migration and enforce immigration laws.

“This flight demonstrates how international partnerships deliver on working people’s priorities for swift returns and secure borders,” said Angela Eagle, the UK’s Minister for Border Security and Asylum.

“Through the Plan for Change, we’re going further in restoring order to a broken system, accelerating returns of those with no right to be here and closing expensive asylum hotels,” she added. “I thank the governments of Ghana and Nigeria for facilitating this operation, which reflects our joint commitment to disrupt organised immigration crime and protect our borders.”

According to the Home Office, more than 24,000 people have been returned since the current administration took over—a figure representing an 11% increase over the same period last year. Deportations of foreign national offenders have also increased by 16%, with 3,594 criminals removed.

Baroness Chapman of Darlington, Minister at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, said international cooperation remains key to tackling irregular migration.

“Working with other countries and partners around the world is critical to tackling irregular migration—by working internationally, we will meet this global challenge together,” she said. “I welcome our strong cooperation with Ghana and Nigeria to return those with no right to be in the UK, secure our borders, and deliver on the Plan for Change.”

The UK government noted that Immigration Enforcement ensures all deportations are conducted in a “dignified and respectful manner.”

The operation comes on the heels of the recent Organised Immigration Crime Summit hosted by the UK, which brought together representatives from over 40 countries—including Ghana and Nigeria—to advance global efforts against human smuggling and irregular migration.

The Plan for Change is one of the UK government’s flagship strategies aimed at tightening border controls, reducing asylum backlogs, and repatriating individuals who have no legal right to remain in the country.

Ease visa restrictions to boost intra-Africa trade – AfCFTA

0

Cynthia E. Gnassingbé-Essonam, Senior Advisor to the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene, has emphasised the critical need for African governments to address visa restrictions hindering the free movement of people across the continent.

Speaking at a webinar organised by LIMA Partners under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Across Africa: Harnessing AfCFTA for Business Growth,” Gnassingbé-Essonam acknowledged that while visa policies fall outside the AfCFTA Secretariat’s direct mandate, lobbying for seamless mobility is essential to realising the trade pact’s full potential.

According to her, the agreement is not just a policy document but a practical platform equipped with trade facilitation instruments designed to help businesses expand beyond borders.

These include the Guided Trade Initiative, the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), and the African Trade Observatory — all aimed at reducing trade costs, improving market access, and boosting intra-African commerce.

She highlighted that while the AfCFTA is in operation, more awareness is needed among entrepreneurs and small businesses about how to utilize these tools to scale and compete across the continent.

“The concern about VISA restrictions among AfCFTA countries is out of our mandates as a secretariat but all we have to do is to lobby the heads of state and the AU that ‘if we want to increase intra-Africa trade, then the governments will need to look at the issue of the movement of people seamlessly.

“The protocol on the movement of people has only been ratified by four countries. So, now that we are pushing, and we see a strong political will for intra-Africa trade and the AfCFTA. We believe that our heads of state need to seriously think about the movement of people.

“At a very political level, our leaders will need to specifically look at the issues of visas. Some countries are taking the lead and showing the way, but we hope that it will be clear at the level of the African Union,” she stated.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has vowed not to renew the existing contract between the agency and waste management giant unless significant revisions are made to address transparency, efficiency, and value-for-money concerns.

In a candid interaction with journalists at a press briefing on Monday, Basintale said the current structure of the sanitation module partnership with Zoomlion does not reflect the interests of the state or the youth employed under it.

Plan International Ghana commends government’s Gh₵292.4 million allocation for sanitary pads

0

By Caleb Kuleke

Ho, April 25, GNA- Plan International Ghana has commended the Government of Ghana for the allocation of Gh₵292.4 million in the 2025 financial budget to distribute free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools.

Mr Constant Tchona, Country Director, Plan International Ghana, in a statement said the transformative initiative, which was a 2024 manifesto promise, marked a significant milestone in the fight against menstrual poverty and the promotion of gender equality in Ghana.

He said menstrual poverty remained a critical barrier to the well-being, education, and development of women and girls, particularly in rural areas.

The Country Director said the limited access to affordable menstrual hygiene products forced many girls to resort to unsafe and unhygienic alternatives, such as rags or leaves, which posed serious health risks and contributed to school absenteeism.

He said the government’s commitment to providing free sanitary pads would not only alleviate these challenges but also empower girls to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence.

Mr Tchona said Plan International Ghana recognised the profound impact the initiative would have on the lives of girls, especially those in underserved rural communities.

“By ensuring access to free sanitary pads, the government is addressing a key driver of inequality and creating an enabling environment for girls to stay in school, focus on their education, and achieve their full potential.”

He said the initiative would significantly reduce school absenteeism, improve menstrual hygiene management, and contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty that disproportionately affects girls.

The Country Director said Plan International Ghana had long been at the forefront of efforts to address menstrual poverty and promote gender equality.

President Mahama said: “Let this be a day when we gather as families and communities in our churches, our mosques, our temples, and our homes to lift up our voices in gratitude and hope to the almighty God”.

“It must be a day when we honor God, not just for what he has given us, but for who he is, our protector, our provider, and our peace giver,” President Mahama said.

He stated that in an era that was marked by division, disaster, and despair, Ghana remained by the grace of God an oasis of peace, stability, and spiritual unity.

“This peace is not accidental. It is the result of committed leadership, communal resilience, and above all, the steadfast prayers and supplications of a faithful nation,” President Mahama stated.

He noted that the event was not merely a ceremonial gesture; saying it was a deliberate and solemn recognition that the national journey must be grounded not only in its economic plans and political reforms, but also in spiritual discipline and divine direction.

Quoting from the Bible, the President said: “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it”.

He said likewise, the Holy Quran teaches that “whatever misfortune befalls you; it is because of what your hands have earned, and he pardons much”.

The President said these sacred words from both books of Scripture remind Ghanaians that without God’s guidance, their best efforts might fall short.

He said 1st  July had long symbolised Ghana’s attainment of status as a proud and sovereign republic and was popularly called Republic Day.

“Today, we give it a new meaning, designating it also as a day on which Ghanaians across faiths and generations will pause to give thanks, to intercede for the nation, and to seek divine wisdom for our collective future”.

The President stated that Ghana’s development as a nation must rest on a foundation of faith, morality and accountability.

“If we are to conquer the many challenges confronting us, like unemployment, economic hardship, moral decay, environmental degradation, we must do more than just debate and legislate. We must also pray. We must humble ourselves before God and commit our plans to him,” President Mahama said.

He urged Ghanaians to therefore pray for the nation’s children that they may be guided in truth and equipped for a future of promise and called for prayers for the nation’s youth that they might find meaningful work and reject the temptations of despair.

“Let us pray for our men and women in uniform that they may serve with courage and compassion and pray for our teachers, doctors, our farmers, nurses, artisans, that the work of their hands may prosper our nation,” he said.

He also called for prayers for the leadership of the nation to serve with humility and reverence to God and for the citizens to choose justice over corruption, peace over conflict, and unity over division.

The President said one of Ghana’s greatest blessings was the harmony with which they practice their diverse faiths.

“Christians, Muslims, traditionalists, we worship differently, but we work together as one people. This is a national treasure that we must never take for granted”.

President Mahama said the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day must be a legacy, a sacred pause in the national calendar that generations to come to celebrate; stating that “a day when Ghana does not cry out in fear but rejoices in faith”.

Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a Presidential Staffer and Chair of the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Committee, on behalf of the members of the Committee, expressed gratitude to the President for the honour done them.

He also pledged that they would deliver on the task given to them.

GJA Initiates Legal Action Against OSP

0

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has initiated legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), for the arrest and intimidation of radio broadcaster, Godwin Asare Bediako.

On April 2, 2025, Godwin Asare Bediako, a renowned journalist was arrested by the OSP, for accusing the Special Prosecutor of requesting a private jet from the then ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to the risky nature of his job.

The Special Prosecutor denied the allegation and said it was an attack on his integrity and, therefore, arrested Godwin Asare Bediako but subsequently granted him a bail in the sum of GH¢5 million after the journalist refused to reveal the source of his information.

But speaking at a news conference in Accra, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, described the move by the OSP as intimidation, and has therefore instructed its legal team to take steps to initiate legal action against the Office.

He said, “We have instructed our legal team to take immediate steps to initiate a judicial review of the unlawful actions undertaken by the OSP which constitute harassment of our member and clearly exceed the powers granted to the Special Prosecutor under the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act,  2017 (959).

“We firmly hold the view that such an override of Authority by the OSP is not only unacceptable but illegal. Accordingly, we will seek a declaration from a court of competent jurisdiction to nullify these actions,” he added.

The GJA President further said the Association has also directed its lawyers to file an application for an injunction to restrain the OSP from engaging in any further acts of harassment or undue interference with regards to Godwin Asare Bediako and any other journalist.

He also expressed GJA’s commitment to uphold the rule of law in ensuring that justice is served within the boundaries of legal authority, while urging the Special Prosecutor not to deviate from “its core mandate of the role of a Special Prosecutor to that of a Special Persecutor.”

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, John Oti Bless, has reassured Zoomlion Ghana Limited that the government will settle its outstanding debt for sanitation services provided over the past two years.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), has been owed to the tune of GH¢1.2 billion for its services during this period.

Speaking to journalists during a tour of the company’s Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) at Adjen-Kotoku, Accra, on Wednesday, Mr Oti Bless affirmed that Minister of Finance, has pledged to clear outstanding debt, including those owed to Zoomlion.

“About GH¢ 13 billion has been budgeted for this purpose. I trust the finance minister will fulfill this promise,” Mr Oti Bless revealed.

He expressed concern about Zoomlion’s unpaid services, saying, “We just visited one of his warehouses, where we saw a large number of imported tricycles meant for district assemblies. Unfortunately, he hasn’t received payments from the government for the past two years. How can a company function effectively without resources?”

The chairman commended Zoomlion’s innovation and productivity, and urged Ghanaians to patronise services of the company.

He said “this fight is about public health. It’s not about us as individuals or political affiliations—it concerns every Ghanaian,” he noted, giving the assurance that his committee was committed to delivering positive change in Ghana’s sanitation sector.

Mr Oti Bless called for effective management of sanitation, particularly in streets and communities.

He highlighted the need for a dedicated sanitation fund, public education campaigns, and enforcement of local bye-laws.

Mr Oti Bless said the management of sanitation should be a daily necessity that requires a dedicated source of funding.

He suggested that “If 40 pesewas is being raised through the levy, 20 pesewas should go to sanitation while the other 20 pesewas goes to energy. This will bring real change,” he recommended.

Mr Oti Bless also stressed the importance of public awareness and support for sanitation initiatives.

“We need the media’s support for a nationwide public education campaign. We must ensure the enforcement of local bye-laws. Many district assemblies’ bye-laws are not gazetted, which renders them unenforceable,” he said.

The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, urged the committee to support Zoomlion by ensuring that sanitation and environmental bye-laws are implemented and offenders prosecuted.

“What we do here goes beyond just cleaning. We are tackling cholera, environmental issues, and even tourism-related concerns, all while improving public health and sanitation infrastructure,” he said.

Dr Agyepong lamented the lack of adequate incentives and support for the vital work being done in this sector.

“The work we do often lacks the recognition it deserves, which is quite discouraging,” he said.

Dr Agyepong said that with the right support “Zoomlion can do even more for the country. Your support can help us do even more for the country”.

Teachers have been suppressed for long

0

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah Tanko, has raised concerns over the longstanding systemic suppression of teachers within the Ghana Education Service (GES), particularly regarding career progression beyond the rank of deputy director.

In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, April 25,  Musah expressed deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, for their intervention to facilitate the promotion of teachers and deputy directors.

However, he questioned the delay in addressing what he termed an entrenched barrier in the promotional structure.

“I want to express our profound gratitude to the President of the Republic and the sector minister regarding the decoupling of the deputy director rank. The substantive question is, why is it that it has been delayed?” he queried.

He further explained the restrictive nature of the existing system, which he said has effectively blocked teachers from rising beyond the deputy director rank unless rare conditions are met.

“On our scheme of service, the last rank which you can be promoted to is director one, but it has become some kind of systemic suppression where teachers can only rise to the deputy director rank. And before you go to director two, three conditions must be fulfilled,”  Musah stated.

According to him, the current structure only allows promotion to director two under three specific conditions: the retirement of a district director, the resignation of a district director, or the unfortunate passing of a current office holder.

“If none of these conditions are fulfilled, there is no way you can move from the deputy director rank to director two,” he added.

GNAT had earlier threatened to embark on a nationwide strike by April 30 over the delay in promoting more than 1,000 qualified teachers. In response, President Mahama directed the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education.

Subsequently, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced the formation of a committee to develop clear modalities for the promotion process and the implementation of the Government’s Professional Teacher Licensing Examinations.

Musah described the President’s directive as a positive step forward and expressed hope that it would lead to a lasting resolution.

“If this time, President Mahama and the Minister for the sector have given us this information, it is a welcome one, and we are grateful. We are hoping that the rest of the modalities will be worked out, and if all things are equal, teachers can rise to become Director General,” he said.

Akufo-Addo not responsible for NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat

0

The Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Osman Masawudu, has strongly dismissed allegations that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was responsible for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The former President has faced criticism from some NPP supporters following the party’s heavy loss in the elections.

Speaking in an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, April 25, Alhaji Masawudu rejected such claims, stating, “Many Ghanaians, even some of our political party members, think that this kind of defeat the NPP encountered in the 2024 elections, some of them attributed the defeat to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. In my view, it’s the wrong direction, it’s wrong thinking.”

He argued that the former President should not be blamed for the party’s defeat simply because certain promises were not fulfilled.

Alhaji Masawudu further stated that the NPP would run its 2028 campaign on the achievements of former President Akufo-Addo.

“It is the same former President Nana Addo Dankwa who has done a massive job for Ghanaians in the health, road sector and infrastructure as a whole. The party’s campaign will be based on his achievements,” he stated.

“Enough Is Enough” – Minority Condemn Mahama Over CJ Brouhaha

0

The Minority in Parliament unequivocally condemns President John Dramani Mahama’s reckless and unconstitutional decision to suspend Her Ladyship, Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, under the purported authority of Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution. This brazen action constitutes nothing less than a judicial coup, a flagrant abuse of executive power, and a direct assault on the independence of Ghana’s judiciary.

Pope Francis was a good man with a good soul

0

President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as a “good man” who was “personable and humane, with a good soul.”

Mahama penned the heartfelt message on Friday, April 25, in the book of condolence opened at the Apostolic Nunciature in Accra.

The gesture was in honour of the late pontiff, whose death was announced on Monday, April  21, by the Vatican.

Pope Francis, known for his humility and strong advocacy for peace, social justice, and interfaith unity, died at the age of 88. His burial is scheduled to take place at the Vatican on Saturday, April 26.

In memory of Pope Francis, a solemn mass was held with the presence of a government delegation, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and joined by religious leaders from various Christian denominations, including a representative of the National Chief Imam at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra on Friday, April 25.

Mahama orchestrated CJ’s suspension – Nana B claims

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of orchestrating the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

According to him, the President’s decision was premeditated, citing what he described as a prior announcement of such intentions.

He referenced a past meeting between President Mahama and lawyers during which the President allegedly expressed dissatisfaction with the judiciary and promised changes if elected.

President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, following the establishment of a prima facie case related to three petitions calling for her removal.

The decision, made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has led to the formation of a five-member committee to investigate the matter.

In response, a coalition of political parties, including the NPP, has announced plans to stage a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, to protest the suspension.

Speaking in an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, April 24, Henry Nana Boakye claimed the country’s democracy is under threat and called on citizens to resist what he described as an attack on the judiciary.

“Our democracy is under attack, our judiciary is under attack. We have a President who advertised his intentions to remove the Chief Justice. This is just a plan in motion.

“This is a pre-meditated activity in motion. Before the 2024 elections, he met a group of lawyers in the Volta region, where he said he was not happy with the judiciary and that he would make changes to the leadership of the judiciary if voted into power.

“Today, we have a case where the President has orchestrated the suspension of a Chief Justice, it has never happened before,” he stated.

Mahama pays tribute to late Pope Francis

0

President John Dramani Mahama has paid glowing tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as “a good man, personable and humane, with a good soul.”

The President made these remarks in the book of condolence opened in honour of the late Pontiff, who passed away recently.

Expressing his admiration, President Mahama added, “I pray that the Conclave be guided by God to choose a worthy successor, and I know one who will make a good Pope—our own Cardinal A.T.”

Earlier, in a post mourning the Pope’s death, President Mahama extended condolences on behalf of his family and the people of Ghana to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful in the country and around the world.

From Checks To Cheers – Has Ghana’s Parliament Become A Rubber Stamp?

0

A Chaotic scene during the vetting process

Ghana’s Parliament has undergone a dramatic transformation. Once defined by balance and brinkmanship, it now appears to be sliding into a state of unchecked dominance. The 2024 general election delivered a political landslide for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), shifting the legislative terrain from a precarious 137-137 split to a commanding 183-seat majority—plus four allied independent Members of Parliament (MPs). That leaves the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with a diminished presence of just 88 seats.

The numbers tell a story of overwhelming advantage, but beneath them lies a deeper concern: Is Ghana’s Parliament becoming a chamber of executive convenience rather than oversight? Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s branding of the opposition as a “micro minority” has intensified that concern. And events since January suggest Parliament may be at a tipping point.

A Majority In Overdrive

The signs of imbalance surfaced early in the new parliamentary term. On January 30, 2025, the Appointments Committee’s vetting of ministerial nominees descended into chaos. Originally, both caucuses agreed to vet three individuals, later adjusting to four. However, after completing the fourth vetting, the NDC Majority introduced two additional nominees—without prior consensus.

The Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, protested vociferously. “We agreed to vet four nominees, not six,” he declared, accusing the Majority of acting in bad faith. Tensions boiled over. Tables and microphones were overturned, and the police had to intervene to restore calm.

Four MPs were suspended afterward, including both Chief Whips—Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor for the Majority and Frank Annoh-Dompreh for the Minority. Yet the Majority carried on with the vetting process the next day, in the Minority’s absence, triggering fears that parliamentary deliberation had been replaced with political railroading.

Controlling the Conversation

The perception of parliamentary overreach deepened during the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy discussions. In a heated session that the Majority insisted be described as a “comment” rather than a “debate,” Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga proposed a novel idea: allocate speaking time according to the numerical strength of each caucus.

The proposal was met with fierce opposition. “What is going on in this chamber?” shouted Afenyo-Markin, as First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor agreed to the suggestion. It took Speaker Bagbin’s intervention to restore calm. In rejecting the proposal, Mr. Bagbin referenced tradition: “The Minority will have their say, and the Majority will have their way. That has been the practice since the inception of the Fourth Republic.”

Even in his defence of parliamentary norms, Mr. Bagbin acknowledged the power imbalance that now defines Ghana’s legislative process.

Midnight Laws, Morning Aftershocks

The Majority’s dominance has also manifested in legislative timing. In the early hours of March 29, 2025, Parliament passed the controversial Ghana GoldBold Bill at 3:10 a.m. The Minority had requested a deferral until 10 a.m. to allow for further deliberation. That request was denied, prompting a walkout.

Afterward, Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin accused the government of prioritizing illegal mining interests—galamsey—over responsible governance. “They are now the Apostles promoting galamsey,” he said. The incident marked yet another moment where legislative power appeared to outweigh parliamentary principle.

Boycotts And Budgeting Woes

The Majority’s assertiveness has not only caused friction during law-making but also in Parliament’s day-to-day functioning. On March 2, 2025, the Minority boycotted a three-day orientation programme in Ho, Volta Region, on grounds of cost.

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip, argued the orientation could have been held in the chamber to avoid unnecessary spending—aligning with President John Mahama’s call for fiscal restraint. Speaker Bagbin, however, criticized the boycott as “unacceptable” and counterproductive.

It wasn’t the first time such concerns were raised. In the previous Parliament, the NDC Minority objected to a similar programme at the Rock City Hotel in Koforidua. Now in opposition, the NPP was raising the same flags—suggesting that partisanship may shift, but parliamentary culture does not.

The destroyed microphones

A Chamber At A Crossroads

These developments raise a critical question: Is Ghana’s Parliament still a space for bipartisan dialogue and checks and balances, or is it becoming a rubber stamp for executive authority?

While numerical strength gives the NDC the power to legislate at will, democracy demands more than majorities. It requires deliberation, dissent, and the legitimacy that comes from inclusive governance. As Speaker Bagbin often reminds the chamber, “Consensus is not weakness—it is democracy in practice.”

With a weakened opposition and a steamrolling Majority, Parliament must now confront its greatest test: whether it can still act as the conscience of the nation, or if it will be reduced to a choir singing to the tune of the executive.

In Ghana’s new Parliament, the Majority clearly has its way. But the question remains: will the Minority still have its say—and will anyone be listening?

TTH doctors resume emergency services after Dagbon Overlord’s intervention

0

Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have called off their strike after two days, following intervention from the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II.

A high-level delegation sent by the Yaa Naa, led by Zangbalun Naa Dr. Yakubu II, Chief of the Zangbalun Traditional Area, met with both the hospital’s management and representatives of the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) on Friday, April 25.

Following this meeting, emergency services resumed at the referral facility, which serves the northern sector.

However, the doctors are still demanding an apology from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh before fully resuming work to offer health services at the Outpatients Department, Myjoyonline.com has learned.

The doctors had downed their tools, citing a hostile working environment, a lack of basic medical supplies, and what they described as an insult to their dignity by senior government officials.

The strike was triggered by the dismissal of the TTH CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, by the minister over alleged mismanagement and medical negligence, which led to a patient’s death at the hospital.

The minister’s visit was intended to assess the facility’s current state and gather first-hand information regarding the alleged negligence that resulted in the death of a patient referred to the hospital weeks earlier.

The deceased, Bavug Salim, was rushed to the Emergency Ward’s red zone in an unconscious state but was allegedly left unattended for several hours without explanation, leading to his death.

During the visit, a medical officer, Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, attempted to explain the circumstances surrounding the death, but the minister found the explanation unsatisfactory.

The minister also expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s overall condition and resource management, ultimately leading to the CEO’s dismissal.

‘Management is weak’ – Dagbon envoy criticises TTH leadership over Doctors’ strike

0

Dr. Jacob Mahama, the Zangbalun Lana and leader of the mediation team dispatched by the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, has blamed the management of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for the recent strike by doctors, stating that the situation could have been avoided with adequate resource provision.

His remarks come after doctors at TTH resumed emergency services following a successful intervention by a high-powered delegation from the Dagbon palace.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, April 25, Dr. Mahama stressed that the strike was rooted in the hospital management’s failure to provide doctors with essential tools and supplies.

“Everything is management. If you get them the right tools, I don’t think there will be a lot of grievances from the doctors. They need the tools and supplies to work with, and that is what they need to get for them,” he stated.

He further pointed out that the lack of resources not only hampered the doctors’ ability to perform their duties but also led to frustration due to mistreatment from patients, which he said stemmed from the hospital’s shortcomings.

“It is up to the management. That management is weak. If they were doing their work well, we wouldn’t have had this issue. Why are the other teaching hospitals not complaining?” he questioned.

Dr. Mahama’s comments reflect growing concerns over the operational challenges at TTH and underscore the need for improved leadership and logistics to prevent future disruptions.

A government delegation, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and joined by religious leaders from various Christian denominations, including a representative of the National Chief Imam, gathered at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra on Friday, April 25, for a solemn mass in memory of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis, who  served as the Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church after ascending to the papacy in 2013, following the resignation of his predecessor, Benedict XVI, was announced dead by the Vatican on April 21

The Vatican confirmed his passing in a statement issued by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who said, “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.”
In remembrance of the final sermon ahead of the pontiff’s burial, which is scheduled to take place at the Vatican on Saturday, April 26, a heartfelt prayer, hymns, and moving tributes, were shared as Ghanaians joined the rest of the world in mourning the loss of the Catholic Church’s spiritual leader.

Mahama declares July 1 as National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that July 1, traditionally observed as Ghana’s Republic Day, will now also be celebrated as the country’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

Speaking at the inauguration of the planning committee for the event, President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s enduring peace and stability are no accident, attributing it to divine grace and the nation’s commitment to religious harmony.

“One of Ghana’s greatest blessings is the harmony with which we practice our diverse faith. Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists all worship differently but walk together as one people. This is a national treasure we must never take for granted. In a world where religion often divides, in Ghana we shine our unity and diversity,” he said.

He added: “… This is the spirit with which we must move forward. So, with conviction, unity, and purpose, I hereby declare the Republic Day, July 1, every year, also as a national day of prayer and thanksgiving.”

The newly constituted committee, chaired by Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, is tasked with organizing the national observance. Mr. Afriyie Ankrah underscored the significance of the day as one of reflection and gratitude.

“The national day of thanksgiving belongs to all Ghanaians. It is our hope and prayer that the work we do will not only make Ghana proud but will serve as a beacon to other nations,” he stated.

The declaration marks a symbolic step toward fostering unity and faith-based solidarity among Ghanaians, as the nation continues to uphold its legacy of peaceful coexistence.
