The Ghana Police Service has provided details of the recent clash in Bawku, located in the Upper East Region.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 10, 2025, the police said the clash occurred between its personnel and some youth in Bawku.

The statement indicated that the incident resulted in the death of one man, identified as Fuseini Iddrisu, and left five others injured.

According to the police, two of the injured individuals were security officials, one police officer and one officer from the Ghana Immigration Service.

It also stated that several properties belonging to the police and its personnel, including vehicles and residential accommodations, were completely destroyed during the clash.

“One person, Fuseini Iddrisu, unfortunately lost his life during the incident. Five others, including one police officer and one immigration officer, sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement read in part.

“Some properties belonging to the police, including two vehicles and a rented police accommodation at Binduri, as well as the homes of some police officers, were damaged,” it added.

The police provided these details while announcing the visit of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunoo, to Bawku, accompanied by a team of intelligence officers and investigators.

According to the statement, the IGP is visiting Bawku to “attain first-hand knowledge and assess the security situation on the ground.”

“While in Bawku, the IGP and his team will also commiserate with the family of the deceased, visit the injured persons currently on admission, and reach out to officers who lost their properties as a result of the violence,” the statement further noted.

The police also stated that, together with the Ghana Armed Forces, they have restored calm in Bawku, adding that “security has since been intensified in Bawku and surrounding communities as joint police and military patrols continue.”

Meanwhile, the Bawku residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, who is also the Majority Leader in Parliament, was allegedly set on fire by unidentified arsonists.

According to multiple news outlets on April 10, 2025, the incident followed a similar attack on police buildings in the town.

One person reportedly died in the arson attack on the police buildings, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

In response, the Member of Parliament, who also serves as the Majority Leader, issued a statement on April 9, 2025, condemning the recent shooting incident.

In his statement, Mahama Ayariga distanced himself from the decisions taken by the law enforcement officers.

I didn’t inherit any galamsey drones, ask Minerals Commission, IMCIM – Abu Jinapor

0

Former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has distanced himself from recent concerns over drones allegedly procured to aid the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), insisting that he neither received the drones nor any documentation about them during his tenure.

His comments come after the Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah disclosed that he has not seen any of the drones reportedly procured by the Akufo-Addo government to fight illegal mining.

Speaking at a meeting with the management and staff of the Minerals Commission in Accra on April 7, 2025, Mr Buah stressed the importance of technology in tackling galamsey but said he has yet to locate the drones since assuming office.

Reacting to this development in an interview on Joy FM, Mr Jinapor clarified that the drones in question were reportedly purchased in 2018 by the now-defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), chaired by Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

He explained that when he assumed office as Lands Minister, there was no formal handover or documentation regarding the existence or location of the said drones.

“These drones that are being talked about are drones which were supposedly bought in 2018 by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, which was headed by Prof Frimpong-Boateng.

“When I became minister, there was no handover note which suggested that drones had been bought; neither were there any drones handed over to me as minister,” he stressed.

Mr Jinapor, therefore, directed all enquiries about the drones to the Minerals Commission, the statutory body responsible for mining records, or to the leadership of the defunct IMCIM.

“So the correct place to direct the enquiry will be the Minerals Commission, which is the repository of all records about mining, and therefore they should have records of it, and/or the leadership of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining headed by Prof Frimpong-Boateng and his colleagues,” he advised.

When asked if he had queried the Inter-Ministerial Committee about the matter during his tenure, the former minister replied in the affirmative.

“I made queries and enquiries. There were no records of these drones … they just did not exist at the time I became a minister. Were they bought? Were they not bought? How were they handled? All these questions can be answered by the Inter-Ministerial Committee.”

Sixty youth from cocoa-growing communities complete Cargil, ICI apprenticeship programme

0

Accra, April, 10, GNA – A total of 60 adolescent apprentices from cocoa-growing communities in Ghana have successfully completed a year-long vocational and technical training programme spearheaded by Cargill, in partnership with the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI).

The initiative formed part of Cargill’s long-term Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) strategy under the Cargill Cocoa Promise, focused on identifying, preventing, and remediating child labour within the cocoa supply chain.

A graduation ceremony was held at Sefwi Bekwai in the Western North Region on Wednesday, where graduates were presented with official TVET certificates from the Ministry of Education and received tools of trade to launch their careers.

The apprenticeship specifically supports 15–17-year-olds in cocoa-growing communities beyond compulsory school age and often face limited access to further education or skills training.

Through practical training in carpentry, tailoring, and glass fabrication, the initiative equips youth with income-generating skills for self-reliance and community resilience.

Mr Max Essoh Latte, Managing Director of Cargill Ghana, said promoting human rights were fundamental to the work of the Organisation, hence the decision to introduce the programme.

“We believe that the best way to safeguard the future of cocoa is to improve the livelihoods and wellbeing of farmers and their families. This programme empowers young people with real opportunities to succeed,” he said.

Mr Mike Arthur, Country Director of ICI, said the joint programme was a “great example” of how child labour and poverty in cocoa-growing communities could be reduced.

“By investing in adolescents and providing access to vocational training closer to home, we can equip them with skills that help them be economically independent in the future, allowing them to support their families, diversifying income in cocoa-growing communities, and reducing the prevalence of child labour,” he said.

Mr Samuel Apana, Sustainability Operations Manager at Cargill, said more youth would be added to the programme in the coming months, adding that the Organisation combined short-term support with long-term investment in education, women’s empowerment, and community infrastructure.

Some community leaders including Oyeadieyie Basaoe Kwadwo Armah III, Omanhene of Sefwi Bekwai Traditional Area applauded Cargill’s leadership and called on other private sector actors to follow suit in supporting youth development.

Government to phase out double track system by end of 2027

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government is working towards phasing out the double-track system in senior high schools by the end of 2027.

Speaking during a meeting with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) on Thursday, April 10, 2025, he acknowledged that the double-track system was introduced as a necessary response to infrastructure challenges.

“We expect that by the end of 2027, the double-track system will be a thing of the past. To those who believe it should be hailed, and to those who see it as a politically necessary response to inadequate infrastructure that supported the noble dream of expanding access to secondary education — the reduced contact hours between learners and teachers cannot be a desirable academic training model. It cannot be. Therefore, we all need to work together to reverse it,” he noted.

The double-track system was introduced in 2018 as a temporary measure to accommodate the surge in student enrollment under the Free SHS policy introduced by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports are now at least 145%

0

US President, Donald Trump US President, Donald Trump

President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports are now at least 145%, far above the level many economists said could decimate US-China trade.

Trump is imposing a 125% charge designed to both counter America’s trade deficit with China and punish Beijing for retaliating against US import taxes.

The number, published in a White House memo Thursday, comes in addition to a 20% levy put into place earlier this year over China’s role in fentanyl trafficking.

The staggering US tariffs on the world’s second largest economy have triggered a tit-for-tat trade war that has unnerved global financial markets.

Stocks fell on Thursday one day after the biggest buying spree in years, as investors braced for more trade hostility. The S&P 500 Index fell about 3.5% on the news, as euphoria again gave way to unease.

rump’s tariff rollout has been marked by confusion, as Trump has repeatedly shifted course. The president on Wednesday put off plans to impose higher levies on dozens of nations hours after they went into place, even as he escalated his trade fight with Beijing.

The US’s other trading partners will face a 10% blanket import tax to allow for a 90-day period to negotiate individual trade agreements. If that doesn’t succeed, the higher duties are set to go into place on July 9.

The president’s order published Thursday raised taxes even further on small packages from China that were previously not taxed, which could hit American shoppers purchasing goods from retailers like Temu and SheIn Group Ltd.

The US will tax imports of items priced up to $800 at a rate of 120% of their value, up from a prior plan to levy a 90% ad valorem tax.

The per postal item fee on goods entering after May 2 and before June 1 will rise to $100 from the planned $75. Parcels entering after June 1 will face a charge of $200 per item instead of $150 announced previously.

Ferdinand (L) and some commentators Ferdinand (L) and some commentators

Rio Ferdinand couldn’t hide his reaction after witnessing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia score a breathtaking goal against Aston Villa. The Georgian star lit up the game with a moment of pure magic — and Ferdinand’s response said it all.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) cruised to a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League at the Parc des Princes.

Morgan Rogers gave the visitors a surprise lead against the run of play in the first half, but PSG responded with stunning strikes from wingers Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on either side of the break.

With minutes left on the clock, Nuno Mendes scored to seal the 3-1 win for PSG. Though all of PSG’s goals were impressive, it was Kvaratskhelia’s strike that truly stole the spotlight.

Picking up the ball just beyond the halfway line, the Georgian winger exploded down the left flank, leaving Villa defenders in his wake.

With dazzling footwork and incredible close control, he weaved past Axel Disasi, shifted effortlessly onto his left foot, and unleashed a thunderous strike that gave Emiliano Martinez no chance in goal.

The goal drew an incredible reaction from former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who was on commentary duty. The former England international was in awe of Kvaratskhelia’s brilliance, shouting in excitement and celebrating alongside his co-commentators, who clapped in appreciation of the wonder goal.

The looting must end – Franklin Cudjoe urges NDC not to lose focus

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain resolute in their pursuit of the missing ECG containers, and prevent the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) from distracting them.

According to him, the NPP is using allegations of the ruling government being involved in drug trafficking and money laundering to distract them from making progress in the search for the over 1,300 missing ECG containers.

Ntim Fordjour: Minority alleges parliamentary immunity breach

0

The minority in parliament on Thursday raised issues with the immunity of Assin South Member of Parliament, Rev Ntim Fordjour, arguing it may have been breached following the attempted raid on his residence in connection with his recent drug trafficking allegations.

The search involving security operatives from National Security sparked a heated debate after footage showing the operatives entering Fordjour’s house went viral.

Rev. Fordjour recently alleged that the Kotoka International Airport may have been used for suspicious drugs and money laundering activities.

In response to the search, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin suggested that Rev. Fordjour’s parliamentary immunity may have been breached.

He pointed to an established protocol, explaining that when MPs are needed for a search or investigation, security agencies must first send a written request to the Speaker of Parliament. The Speaker would then arrange for the MP’s release…

“I don’t understand why the government is defying such an arrangement with Parliament,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“We are going to prompt the Speaker about this incident. The Minister for the Interior, who is responsible for national security matters and who is also a Member of Parliament, should also be written to because we don’t understand this ‘Rambo style’ approach.”

He added that this was particularly concerning because similar searches had been handled according to the established protocol in past parliaments.

Afenyo-Markin condemned the search, emphasising that it created an atmosphere of insecurity for MPs.

“What we saw this morning was appalling. Armed police bringing National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials into the matter means no MP is safe, no politician is safe,” he stated. “What they have done is a breach of privilege and unity. It’s so obvious.”

“If any letter had been written for this matter, it would have been brought to my attention. When letters were written for Kwame A-Plus and other colleagues, they came to light. This is the same ‘Rambo style’ used when they attempted to arrest our brother from Akwatia,” he remarked.

In response to the security search and ongoing concerns, Joy News understands that the Minority in Parliament has formally petitioned the Speaker to act swiftly to uphold constitutional provisions and parliamentary protocols.

The petition calls for the Speaker to investigate the matter and ensure that Rev. Fordjour’s parliamentary immunity is respected, particularly in light of the search at his home.

Let’s take advantage of AI to optimise sectors of economy

0

Accra, April 10, GNA – Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, the Paramount Chief of Akuapem, has called on stakeholders in the various sectors of the economy to make good use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the lives of the citizenry.

He said in the education sector, AI-driven platforms could provide personalised learning experiences, allowing students to learn at their own pace and style and improve educational outcomes.

He said this in Accra at an AI Conference organised by Rethink Africa, supported by MTN Ghana, Academic City and MEST Africa.

The Chief said AI was not merely a tool but a powerful catalyst for change, urging all and sundry to utilise its benefits for sustained growth.

In healthcare, he stated that AI could analyse vast amounts of data to assist in early diagnosis and treatment recommendations, leading to better patient outcomes and enhanced access to quality care.

“In agriculture, AI technologies enable precision farming that is allowing farmers to make informed decisions that increase yield sustainability.

“In finance, AI algorithms can streamline transactions and enhance fraud detection, fostering economic growth and stability,” he said.

Oseadeeyo Akuffo III stressed that AI could empower traditional authorities by providing data-driven insights that enhance decision-making and governance.

“This can strengthen their roles in community development, enabling them to address local issues more effectively,” he said.

He said as participants explored these vast possibilities, it was important to remain steadfast in committing to ethical implementation.

“Optimising our systems means not only improving efficiency but also ensuring inclusivity.

“We must advocate for policies that protect our people and promote responsible AI practices, ensuring that this technology revolution uplifts every citizen,” he said.

Mr John Ofori, President of Rethink Africa, said Kenya and Rwanda had positioned themselves well in the AI space and called on Ghana to follow suit.

He called on the youth to make good use of social media, adding that, in the next two years, a lot of young people would be displaced because AI would replace most jobs in the world.

Mr Richard Densu, Manager, Customer Enablement, MTN Ghana, said MTN had installed more than 200,000 fibre broadband to people’s homes to ensure access to the Internet to facilitate services in the country.

“We have made a lot of progress. More than 50 per cent of Africans have connectivity to the internet, but a large number of people, especially in rural areas, do not have that,” he said.

GAHF Launches ‘Echoing The Voice Of Peace’

0

Some dignitaries present at the launch

Global African Heritage Foundation (GAHF) in honour of the late Kofi Annan and in commemoration of his birthday has launched a book titled “Echoing the Voice of Peace: Quotes of Busumuru Kofi Annan” at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

The book launch, which was on the theme: “Kofi Annan’s Legacy: A Call to Action for Global Peace and National Unity,” aims to celebrate the legacy of the late Kofi Annan for championing peace and human rights.

The book is a collection of Kofi Annan’s most profound quotes which reflects his insights on sustainable peace, conflict prevention and resolution, human rights, social justice and democracy of national and international concerns.

Speaking at the launch, the author of the book, Peter Panyin Anaman, noted that the book is like a tribute to the remarkable legacy of Kofi Annan, for his tireless efforts to promote peace.

He added that it is the collective duty to preserve the valuable insights shared by our leaders for future generations.

“It is our duty to preserve these treasures of wisdom and keep it for the next generation,” he stressed.

Mr. Anaman further explained that in our current world where conflict and division is common, it is a crucial moment for the world to be reminded of the wisdom and vision of our forefathers and leaders who dedicated their lives to build a more peaceful world.

He said, “In the midst of the chaos, a gentle whisper of peace can be heard. This book, ‘Echoing the  Voice of Peace’, is a collection of those  whispers  echoing through  ages to guide us, inspire us and stir up the virtues needed to grow the more peaceful world.”

Mr. Anaman disclosed that the book aims to send messages of peace from the legends of peace to the people of Africa and the world at large, noting that peace is a collective responsibility and not meant for the select few in the society, since every individual is an agent of peace.

He added that it is important for the youth who have not heard of Kofi Annan to be sent the messages of peace, in order to inform their comportment and nurture in them the peace and values from our forefathers.

The Guest Speaker, Mr. Kwame Pianim, also added that Ghanaians should make it a priority to protect the peace of the nation since Ghana has not encountered such complex situations.

He said, “We in Ghana, have not been in a complex situation before, especially the youth. They don’t know what it feels like; for a loved one to go to church or mosque and not come back.  For somebody you love to go to the streets and get shot, and you are just asked to come and identify them at the morgue.”

He advised that the peace of the nation be protected by citizens, and urged citizens to pray for the president.

“The peace that we have here, this oasis of peace we call Ghana.  Let’s wake up to keep it, and I implore you, let us pray for our current president, President Mahama,” he added.

Central Bank Governor urged to strengthen internal controls

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, April 10, GNA – Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the Governor of Bank of Ghana, has called on all banks to strengthen internal controls and enhance oversight of operational areas.

The Governor said the responsibility for securing banking products and services must fall more squarely on institutions than on the average customer, who relied on the integrity of systems and due diligence.

The Governor was speaking at the maiden post-Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of banks in Accra.

He said these engagements with the CEOs were central to ensuring a mutual understanding of policy direction and alignment in the collective efforts to foster macroeconomic stability and recovery.

He said the BoG’s Information Security Office continued to share real-time threat alerts, and institutions were expected to act swiftly under the Cybersecurity Directive.

“We take cyber threats seriously and urge all financial institutions to match that level of commitment,” he added.

Dr Aisama urged banks to take advantage of the gathering to emphasise the need for unwavering vigilance and full compliance with Anti money laundering obligations.

The Governor said lessons from past bank resolutions continued to shape crisis preparedness and the refining of supervisory and resolution tools.

He said this would include work to strengthen recovery planning and introduce a Resolvability Assessment Framework to ensure banks were both well-capitalized and resolvable in distress, especially in an increasingly interconnected system.

He said as the central bank deepened reforms and reposition the financial sector for the future, it was equally important to reflect on how banks could do more to drive Ghana’s economic transformation.

The Governor said the Bank expected stronger support especially from foreign-owned banks for trade finance, cross-border payment infrastructure, and platforms like Pan-African Payment and Settlement System.

He said BoG would engage with the sector to develop coordinated, practical solutions that improve transaction efficiency, expand export support, and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in regional and global trade.

“To build true resilience, we must move decisively beyond traditional, reactive supervision toward a more forward-looking, risk-sensitive, and system aware model,” he said.

Dr Asiama said the shift was not just about enforcing compliance, but also about shaping a banking system that was agile, accountable, and prepared for the future.

He said the strategy was anchored on focusing on risk identification and mitigation, building digital resilience, focusing on governance and compliance, enhancing collaboration, building capacity for future challenges and prioritizing sustainability oversight.

‘Are Ghanaian offenders less human?’ – Manteaw reacts to plan to deport foreign galamseyers

0

Dr Steve Manteaw, Civil society activist Dr Steve Manteaw, Civil society activist

Civil society activist, Dr Steve Manteaw, has criticised the government’s decision to deport foreigners caught engaging in illegal small-scale mining instead of prosecuting and jailing them.

His call falls on the back of the statement by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, that foreigners caught engaging in illicit mining would be deported to their countries.

“For these two crimes, when we arrest any foreigner, we are not interested in prosecuting him. Our first option is to take them back to their country. And this is something that we are very serious about,” Muntaka stated on April 4, 2025, during an engagement with the Ashanti Regional Police Command in Kumasi.

The decision has been met with contempt by social society activist, Dr Manteaw, who has indicated that deportation as punishment for illegal miners is not punitive enough.

“I’m appalled by this lackluster performance in combating the galamsey menace. Even more annoying is the decision to deport rather than jail foreigners who offend our laws. Are Ghanaian offenders less human than those foreigners who offend our laws with impunity?

“This is certainly not what Ghanaians bargained for. Mahama and the NDC should be careful not to lose the public goodwill so quickly. Still watching the space,” Dr Manteaw said in a post on his Facebook page on April 9, 2025.

GUTA threatens nationwide demonstration in support of used clothing dealers

0

GUTA President, Dr Joseph Obeng GUTA President, Dr Joseph Obeng

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has announced that it will not hesitate to embark on a nationwide demonstration in response to what it describes as a deliberate attempt to collapse the used clothing business in Ghana.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, April 10, 2025, the President of GUTA, Dr Joseph Obeng, declared that the union will strongly resist any efforts to undermine the industry.

“We want everyone to understand that the propaganda being spread to undermine secondhand clothing should not be tolerated because we will not allow any ban,” he stated, expressing solidarity with the strike action declared by used clothing dealers at the Kantamanto Market.

Referring to the activities of the OR Foundation, an organisation accused by the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association of leading a calculated attempt to sabotage the business, Dr Obeng urged the government and relevant ministries to intervene to prevent further escalation.

“We are calling for accountability. We demand a forensic audit into these activities, and we call on the Attorney General’s Department and the Ministry of the Interior to act because this issue could lead to a serious security problem. The division among traders is concerning, and if care is not taken, it could result in major conflict, which we are determined to avoid,” he said.

“The government must step in as early as possible, or we will call for a nationwide demonstration. That will not benefit anyone, as it would mean all sectors of trade joining us in supporting our brothers and sisters in the secondhand clothing industry to fight against this fraudulent grouping that is sowing seeds of discontent among us,” Dr. Obeng added.

He also announced that GUTA is taking steps to promote the proper recycling of secondhand clothing in alignment with the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy.

The Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association declared a strike on Thursday in direct response to what it described as “continued defamatory statements and publications” by the OR Foundation, an organization frequently critical of the secondhand clothing trade in Ghana.

According to a statement released by the association, the OR Foundation has consistently portrayed the industry, particularly activities within the Kantamanto Market, in a negative and misleading light.

The association accused the foundation of spreading “false, unbalanced, and damaging narratives” that undermine the contribution of the used clothing sector to Ghana’s economy.

“These reports have painted an inaccurate picture of our operations, ignoring the significant role our industry plays in job creation, poverty reduction, and sustainable livelihoods for thousands of Ghanaians,” the statement read.

CONMEBOL push for 64-team 2030 World Cup to celebrate 100 years

0

South America’s football governing body, CONMEBOL, has officially requested that the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams instead of the planned 48.

According to CONMEBOL, the proposal aims to make the tournament a special one-off edition to commemorate 100 years since the very first World Cup in 1930.

Alejandro Domínguez, president of CONMEBOL, believes this expansion would allow nearly every country to participate in the centenary World Cup in 2030.

The event is set to be held in Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, following an agreement in 2023 between CONMEBOL and FIFA. As part of the plan, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host one match to open the tournament before it moves to the main co-hosts: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

FIFA has already granted automatic qualification to all six host nations—a move seen as a political win for CONMEBOL’s Paraguayan president, Alejandro Domínguez.

FIFA has also approved the first-ever 48-team World Cup, which will be played in 2026 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Kofi Bentil condemns attempted arrest of Ntim Fordjour; says he’s committed no crime

0

Lawyer and Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has described the National Intelligence Bureau’s (NIB) attempt to arrest Member of Parliament Ntim Fordjour at his residence as unlawful, asserting that the MP acted within his rights as a citizen.

Speaking on Joy FM’s , Mr. Bentil questioned the legality and conduct of the operation, which reportedly involved armed officers who failed to identify themselves or present a warrant.

“This whole idea of them going to arrest somebody in his house, there are so many levels to it. Even if the person has committed a crime and you want to arrest him, you need a warrant,” he stated. “If you arrest him, he doesn’t have to say anything. You have to do the investigations, show him what crime he has committed, put him before a court and have him prosecuted.”

He further expressed concern about the NIB’s approach, saying, “Going there without a warrant, going there without showing your face, going there armed, is just not right.”

Mr. Bentil defended Rev. Fordjour’s right to free speech, especially in his capacity as a legislator. “Every one of us has the right to freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want to say as long as you don’t insult somebody or commit a crime. That includes voicing out suspicions.”

Citing Article 41 of Ghana’s Constitution, he argued that citizens are not only permitted but encouraged to hold public officers accountable. “As a citizen, he can also question public officers all the way to the president. Public officers owe it to the citizenry to answer candidly, honestly, and to the best of their ability using state resources.”

Mr. Bentil questioned the justification for the attempted arrest. “To the extent that Ntim Fordjour is asking questions and demanding answers, he has not committed any crime. He is a Member of Parliament and has every right to do so.”

He added, “If he has made allegations that are not true, it is the responsibility of the one claiming it’s a crime to prove so in court. He [Rev. Fordjour] does not have to cooperate in his own investigation.”

Mr. Bentil concluded by urging restraint and adherence to legal protocols, stressing the importance of upholding democratic rights and processes.

How To Stylishly Design Your Ankara Kaftan As A Mature Lady.

News Hub Creator10h

Ankara kaftans have become a fashionable choice for mature ladies who value both comfort and elegance. Because the fabric offers vibrant patterns and cultural richness, it allows you to express your personal style while maintaining decency. As a mature woman, choosing a simple but bold Ankara pattern ensures your look remains classy without being overwhelming. This is important because loud patterns can sometimes draw unnecessary attention, which might not align with your graceful personality. Opting for a straight or slightly flared cut allows the kaftan to flow freely, which helps you stay comfortable while looking refined.

When the sleeves are designed with a bit of structure or detail, such as bell or butterfly styles, they add a sophisticated flair without being too dramatic. Including minimal embroidery around the neckline enhances the beauty of the outfit, making it look polished and mature. This matters because too much decoration can distract from the elegance you’re aiming for. Adding a belt made from matching fabric helps define your waist, which balances the loose nature of the kaftan and flatters your figure. Choosing ankle-length designs provides full coverage, which contributes to a modest yet stylish appearance. Wearing soft, neutral-colored footwear helps keep the attention on the kaftan itself, maintaining a harmonious look.

Pairing the outfit with simple jewelry like studs or a single bracelet creates a balanced finish, as too many accessories may take away from the kaftan’s unique patterns. Selecting a matching gele or headscarf brings the entire outfit together, which adds cultural depth and beauty to your look. When you pay attention to these small but meaningful design choices, you naturally present yourself with dignity and style. This makes your Ankara kaftan not just clothing, but a graceful reflection of your personality and maturity.

ECG privatisation will hike tariffs, cost jobs

0

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has strongly opposed any attempt to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), warning that such a move could result in skyrocketing electricity tariffs and the mass dismissal of workers.

According to the TUC, ECG’s financial struggles are largely due to excessive political interference in its operations.

The union pointed to issues such as the distribution of political meters, take-or-pay contracts, frequent changes in managing directors, politically influenced board appointments, and meddling in procurement processes as key factors undermining the utility’s performance.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, April 10, during the annual national executive council meeting of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of TUC, General Secretary Timothy Nyame stressed that ECG could thrive if these challenges were properly addressed.

TUC further warned that privatizing the company would come at a high cost to both workers and consumers.

“It must be emphasized that ECG remains a critical national asset, essential for driving Ghana’s economic development, ensuring national sovereignty and energy security, and fostering social equity,” the union said.

“While the challenges facing ECG are significant, ranging from political interference to operational inefficiencies, privatization/PSP is not a viable or sustainable solution,” it added.

A South Sudanese woman, Josephine Abyei Tong Akech, has congratulated her husband, Mayen Koor, for marrying a second wife.

Polio Immunisation: Asutifi North District commences vaccination exercise

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region has launched an immunisation campaign against poliomyelitis (polio) for children aged between seven and 11 months, in a bid to protect them from the disease.

In Ghana, the immunisation schedule for children begins at birth and continues until they reach 18 months.

This includes vaccinations against tuberculosis, polio, hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type B, measles, rubella, and yellow fever.

As part of the implementation of both routine and mass immunisation programmes, Ghana uses the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV), which contains poliovirus serotypes 1 and 3, as well as the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV), which strengthens a child’s immune system and protects them from polio.

With high coverage rates and ongoing efforts to prevent outbreaks and maintain a polio-free status, four doses of OPV are administered at birth, at 6, 10, and 14 weeks, with IPV given at 14 weeks.

Public Health Officer for Disease Control Stephen Owusu Sekyere, speaking at the launch of the campaign in Kenyasi, emphasised that unvaccinated children remain vulnerable to polio.

He urged parents, guardians, and teachers to collaborate with the GHS to ensure the campaign’s success.

He refuted the erroneous claim made by some residents that the vaccine has harmful effects on the health of children, reiterating that “the vaccines are approved and very safe.”

The District Director of the Ghana Health Service, Bryan Sienso, in his remarks, encouraged caregivers to report any side effects resulting from the vaccine to the nearest health facility for prompt attention.

He noted that coverage for routine polio vaccinations has consistently remained above 90 per cent and therefore urged parents and teachers to ensure that no child is left out of the vaccination programme.

MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh

A High Court in Koforidua has dismissed a petition challenging the election of Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the December 7 parliamentary election.

The court also awarded GH¢25,000 in costs against the petitioner.

The petition, which sought to invalidate his election, was struck out on Thursday, April 10, 2025, following a legal application filed by the Director of Legal Affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako Marfo, according to a report by CitiNewsroom.com.

Presiding Judge, His Lordship Krofa Addae, who ruled in favour of the application to dismiss the case, stated that the court found no merit in the petitioner’s claims.

He further held that the results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) reflected the true will of the people.

The legal challenge was initiated by the 2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Fummey Selorm Philibert, and his legal team, who sought to invalidate the outcome of the parliamentary elections.

On February 17, 2025, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Dr Rashid Tanko Computer, announced that the party would pursue legal avenues to challenge the declaration of Annoh-Dompreh as the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri.

‘Have sex before marriage’ – Akosua Agyapong to singles

Ghanaian Highlife musician and television personality, Akosua Agyapong Ghanaian Highlife musician and television personality, Akosua Agyapong

Ghanaian Highlife musician and television personality, Akosua Agyapong, has called on single people to have sexual affairs before they tie the knot.

In a discussion on JoyPrime on April 10, 2025, Akosua Agyapong explained that having sex before marriage allows couples the opportunity to know each other’s fantasies.

She emphasised that it can also save couples from having extramarital affairs and divorce.

“For me, sex before marriage is very important. I say that for a reason; we were all brought up differently. And you can go into marriage and be miserable for the rest of your life if you don’t know the one you said I do to.

“Imagine I get married, which says for better for worse or till death do us part, and after the expensive wedding, I got to know that my husband can’t erect or has a smaller manhood, how do I stay in the marriage?” she said.

Akosua Agyapong also argued that adultery is more serious than fornication.

“Adultery is more serious than fornication because fornication is when two concerned adults agree to have sex. Sometimes, we make Christianity so hard to worship God,” she added.

NIB now following due process in Fordjour’s interrogation – Afenyo-Markin

0

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has confirmed that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has opted to follow due process after initial concerns were raised about their approach to handling the drug trafficking claims linked to the Assin South MP, Rev John Ntim Fordjour.

In an interview on Joy FM on April 10, 2025, the Minority Leader disclosed that after engagements with the NIB, they agreed to apply the necessary legal and parliamentary protocols in handling the matter.

“This matter, I am reliably informed, that a letter has been conveyed to the Speaker’s office. The known procedure will be followed, and we will take it from there,” he said.

“Let us allow due process. One day, you may be out of power, and you’ll be calling for due process. That is my message to my colleagues,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin explained that the leadership of the Minority had expressed concern over how the initial stages of the matter were being handled, particularly regarding alleged attempts to arrest the Member of Parliament without following parliamentary procedures.

He, however, clarified that there was never an issue of resisting arrest, as widely reported, but rather a call for the right procedures to be followed after their engagements with the authorities.

“It is not a matter of resisting arrest. There’s no issue of resisting arrest. We were concerned and as the leader of my caucus, I engaged the authorities and pointed out the law and the protocols. They agreed to the due process, which they have now initiated,” he explained.

‘Cocaine’ Plane Saga: AirMed International speaks

0

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the AirMed at KIA and Rev. Ntim Fordjour (L-T) Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the AirMed at KIA and Rev. Ntim Fordjour (L-T)

AirMed International, operators of medical transport flight N823AM, have denied any involvement with illicit drug trade and money laundering activities following claims made by Rev. Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, regarding the aircraft’s presence at Kotoka International Airport in March 2025.

In a response to a mail query by EIB Network’s Joshua Kodjo Mensah, the U.S.-based air ambulance company categorically denied any wrongdoing, emphasising that the aircraft’s stop in Ghana was a routine technical layover—not part of any covert operation.

“On March 20, 2025, AirMed International aircraft N823AM departed the United States for a scheduled international patient transport. As part of the planned flight path, the aircraft made multiple stops for fuel, including a stop at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana,” the mail reads.

“Upon landing in Ghana, the aircraft experienced a maintenance issue: two blown tyres that required replacement. No patient was on board at the time. To address the mechanical issue, a second aircraft was dispatched with the necessary replacement parts, supplies, and two maintenance technicians.”

The aircraft remained grounded in Accra for several days until repairs were completed. It subsequently departed on March 25, 2025, adhering to standard aviation protocols, including a fuel stop at Grand Canaria Airport en route back to the U.S.

AirMed reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and cooperation:

“We will fully cooperate in any official inquiries into N823AM’s presence in Ghana. Flight documentation and mission details will confirm that the aircraft was not involved in any illicit or illegal activity.”

From Allegations to Arrest

The rebuttal comes in response to claims by Rev. Fordjour, who questioned the aircraft’s mission and alleged possible links to drug trafficking and money laundering. His comments stirred public debate and political tension, prompting President John Dramani Mahama to urge him to assist security agencies with further investigations.

However, the government swiftly pushed back, with Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu describing the claims as “misleading and mischievous,” maintaining that all security checks were duly conducted and the aircraft posed no threat to national security.

In a twist of events, reports indicate that NIB operatives visited Rev. Fordjour’s residence on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Sources suggest the arrest attempt was in connection with his recent public statements regarding Flight N823AM. However, intervention by Majority Leader Osahene Alexander Afenyo-Markin reportedly led to a temporary halt in the arrest, leaving questions about the legal implications still unanswered.

Reconsider decision to exempt artisanal fishers from closed season – JRFE to minister

0

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur

The Executive Director of Journalists for Responsible Fisheries and Environment (JRFE), Kingsley Nana Buadu, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, to reconsider their decision to exempt artisanal fishers from the annual closed fishing season.

According to him, the Marine Fisheries Management Plan (2022–2026) requires the government to enforce a closed fishing season for all fleets to help rebuild Ghana’s depleting fish stocks.

In a press release sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the group urged the Fisheries Ministry to ensure strict adherence to the closed season policy.

Buadu stated that Section 42 of the Fisheries Act (Act 625) mandates the Ministry and the Fisheries Commission to ensure that all fisheries policies and decisions are based on scientific evidence to prevent overexploitation.

“Since the 2014 Fisheries Management Plan came into force, Ghana has been implementing closed seasons since 2016, with the inclusion of artisanal fishers in 2019, after initial challenges with their participation in 2018,” part of the release noted.

“Unfortunately, the current Minister has announced that artisanal fishers will be exempted from this year’s closed season. We find this decision quite concerning, especially considering that Ghana, over the past two years, has succeeded in getting other countries in the sub-region to implement closed seasons for all fleets,” the statement added.

This follows an announcement in March by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, that artisanal fisherfolk will not observe a closed season in 2025.

However, owners of industrial trawl vessels will observe the closed season for two months.

Speaking to Accra-based TV3 in an interview monitored by GhanaWeb Business, the Fisheries Minister stated that this move is not new but rather a modification of the existing management strategy, aimed at ensuring the sustainability of Ghana’s marine and fisheries resources.

“We are modifying the existing management measure known as the closed season. The closed season for semi-industrial and industrial fisheries will remain unchanged. However, in 2025, there will be no closed season for artisanal fishers, I mean the fishers using canoes supported by outboard motors,” she announced.

Previously, artisanal, semi-industrial, and industrial trawl fleets observed the closed season from July 1 to August 31, 2024.

This strategy was agreed upon with stakeholders to reduce excessive pressure and overexploitation of marine resources. It is also aimed at replenishing the country’s declining fish stock.

Meanwhile, illegal and unreported fishing activities are said to cost Ghana’s economy more than US$50 million annually.

The fisheries minister has warned individuals engaged in such activities to desist in order to protect the marine sector, or risk facing legal consequences if apprehended.

Joseph Paintsil scores as LA Galaxy suffer Champions Cup exit

0

Ghana winger Joseph Paintsil registered his first goal of the season for Los Angeles Galaxy but the MLS champions suffered elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Painstil scored to reduce the deficit for LA Galaxy in their 3-2 defeat to Tigres in the continental championship.

The Black Stars winger missed most of the start to the new campaign due to an injury but returned late last month and has since been key for the American.

However, conceding twice in the space of a minute was the undoing of LA Galaxy, following strikes from Nicolas Ibanez and Uriel Antuna in the 9th and tenth minute.

Paintsil gave LA Galaxy hope with his 40th-minute goal but Romulo restored the Mexican’s two-goal advantage after the break.

Carlos Garces scored on the hour mark to pull one back for LA Galaxy as their journey in the Champions Cup came to a crashing end.

Paintsil will now switch his attention to the MLS game against Houston Dynamo on Sunday.

You’re backing someone who called an MP a clown? Like how? — Adomako-Mensah blasts Yaw Tano

0

According to reports from GhanaWeb, a fiery exchange unfolded on April 9, 2025, during Peace FM’s morning show Kokrokoo, involving Afigya Kwabre North MP, Collins Adomako-Mensah, and Yaw Asani Tano, National Organiser of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), as they clashed over the ongoing controversy surrounding two suspicious flights in the country.

Tano sharply criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of being deeply rooted in propaganda.

He referenced historical figures to argue that the party’s political strategy has long been characterized by misinformation.

Adomako-Mensah, visibly irked by Tano’s remarks, shot back, accusing him of repeatedly taking aim at the NPP and behaving as though he were a representative of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He warned that the party had taken note of Tano’s consistent attacks and hinted that he might eventually face strong pushback.

He also questioned why the NPP was being blamed for the current drug trafficking allegations when it had no known links to the matter.

Expressing frustration, Adomako-Mensah asked how historical political figures had any connection to the latest developments involving drug-related claims.

He went on to criticize Tano for defending certain controversial figures within the current administration.

In particular, he condemned Tano’s support for a government communicator who recently insulted a seasoned lawmaker, calling the behavior disrespectful and unjustified.

He said; “And you are supporting Felix Ofosu Kwakye, who called a Member of Parliament a clown. You are supporting a government spokesperson who is calling a third-time Member of Parliament a clown! Like how?”

The debate stems from serious allegations made by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the MP for Assin South, who disclosed that two aircraft that landed at Kotoka International Airport under questionable circumstances may be tied to drug trafficking and financial crimes.

A Plus blows alarm over alleged ‘borla’ levy looting plot, fingers Dr Ayine

0

Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has raised an alarm over what he describes as a coordinated plot to justify an increase in the Sanitation and Pollution Levy.

According to A-Plus, the plot involves government officials colluding with select media houses and civil society organisations (CSOs) to flood the airwaves and social media with carefully selected footage of filthy streets, clogged drains, and uncollected refuse across the country.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, April 10, 2025, the lawmaker highlighted that the Sanitation and Pollution Levy, which was introduced in 2021, imposes a charge of 10 pesewas per litre of petrol and diesel consumed.

Despite the collection of a total revenue of GHS 1.93 billion from 2021 to 2024, A-Plus noted that the levy has failed to yield the desired results, as visible waste remains on streets across the nation.

Even more troubling is what investigative journalists uncovered. A request filed by The Fourth Estate to the Ministry of Finance revealed that out of the GHS 264 million collected in 2021, the Ministry disbursed GHS 156 million to a single company, Sewerage Systems GH. Ltd, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group. For what work done?

A-Plus further alleged that the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, is involved in the plot. He said:

Let’s also remember how this whole arrangement was orchestrated. The current Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, while in opposition, went to great lengths to manipulate the drafting of the law.

He schemed to reconstitute the leadership of the Committee responsible, just so he could gain control and structure the law in a way that would benefit his close associate.

If Dr Ayine attempts anything silly, I’ll expose him further. I’m only setting the stage for a fight. It’s a trap! And trust me, you’ll lose! (I’ll show you where you got money for ‘the last one.’ Is that clue enough?)

In his post, the MP emphasised that the solution to Ghana’s sanitation challenges lies in a decentralised waste management system—one that empowers local governments and communities to take charge of their environment.

He also questioned Dr. Ayine:

After all your efforts, are you proud of the current sanitation situation in Ghana? And now, will you support an increase in the levy—knowing that it will ultimately affect the poor trotro passenger, the market woman, and the struggling youth?

A-Plus pledged to ensure the right decision is made for the future of the country’s sanitation sector.

NIB awaits Speaker to hand over Ntim Fordjour for investigations – Kwakye Ofosu

Rev John Ntim Fordjour (L) and Felix Kwakye Ofosu Rev John Ntim Fordjour (L) and Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) is awaiting approval from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to release Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, to assist in ongoing investigations into allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering.

This follows claims made by the MP that two aircraft recently landed in Ghana carrying illegal drugs and large sums of cash.

“The NIB wrote to the Speaker to release Ntim Fordjour. The Speaker is yet to respond to the NIB, as far as I am aware. Anytime the Speaker responds to it, he will be available for questions,” Kwakye Ofosu stated during an interview on Channel One TV.

According to the minister, the MP made the allegations on April 1, and by the next day, the relevant security and aviation agencies had submitted detailed reports on the matter.

“He (Ntim Fordjour) made this allegation on the 1st of April, I believe. By the 2nd of April, relevant agencies had submitted reports on exactly what happened at the airport between the times that the aircraft arrived and when they left,” he said.

Kwakye Ofosu further stressed that the investigations found no evidence of criminal activity, and that the findings were backed by official documentation.

“The findings were supported by documentary evidence, which provided conclusive proof that no illegal activity took place on the two flights,” he added.

He also made a strong case for transparency, suggesting that the MP’s interrogation should be made public for the sake of accountability and public confidence.

“I have requested that the interrogation be released to the public,” he noted.

The Speaker of Parliament has not yet issued a formal response to the NIB’s request to release the MP for questioning.

The situation remains a subject of public interest and scrutiny, especially given the gravity of the claims.

Housing in Ghana: Cultural influences on housing design and construction

0

By: Peter Kelly AGBEEHIA

What role does culture play in shaping our built environment? Does it seamlessly merge tradition with modernism, or does it translate tradition into modernism?

The way we design, and construct homes is not just about shelter—it is a reflection of who we are, our history, values, and way of life. In Ghana, cultural influences have long dictated housing structures, materials, and spatial arrangements.

However, with the rise of urbanization and globalization, modern construction is taking a new shape—often blending traditional concepts with contemporary designs or completely redefining them.

The deep connection between culture and housing

Housing is not just about four walls and a roof; it is a representation of identity. Different cultures perceive and experience space differently. According to anthropologist Edward Hall (1996), cultural backgrounds shape how individuals interpret and interact with their environment.

In Ghana, the concept of ‘home’ varies significantly across ethnic groups, each with distinct traditions influencing how houses are built and lived in.

Traditionally, Ghanaian homes were designed to suit communal lifestyles, with compound houses being the dominant housing type.

These structures typically feature a central courtyard surrounded by multiple rooms, accommodating extended families. The design supports social interaction, shared responsibilities, and a sense of unity.

In rural settings, homes were often built using locally sourced materials like mud, thatch, and wood—materials that were not only cost-effective but also environmentally sustainable.

The shift from traditional to modern housing

Over time, Ghana’s housing landscape has evolved significantly. The influence of Western architectural styles and economic growth has led to a shift from traditional compounds to single-family homes, townhouses in gated communities, and high-rise apartment complexes catering to an expanding middle class (Ndoum, 2018).

While this shift reflects development and modernization, it also raises questions about how much of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage is being preserved in contemporary housing designs.

Our very own Akans, provide a striking example of how culture influences architecture. Akan homes traditionally featured courtyard designs, open-air living spaces, and decorative symbols embedded into walls, reflecting their deep-rooted customs and spiritual beliefs.

However, in urban areas today, many of these cultural elements have been replaced with Western-style layouts that prioritize privacy and individualism over communal living.

How cultural influences can improve housing solutions

While modern housing in Ghana has largely followed Western blueprints, there is a growing realization that cultural influences can offer practical solutions to housing challenges such as affordability, sustainability, and community integration.

By understanding and embracing cultural diversity, developers and policymakers can create housing solutions that are not only functional but also resonate with the people who inhabit them.

  1. Sustainability through local materials: Traditional Ghanaian houses used earth-based materials like mud and bamboo, which are highly sustainable and well-suited for the local climate. Modern construction can incorporate these materials alongside contemporary innovations to create energy-efficient, eco-friendly homes.
  2. Community-oriented housing: Urban housing developments can take inspiration from the communal aspects of traditional compound houses, promoting shared spaces that foster social interactions while maximizing land use.
  3. Affordable housing solutions: By revisiting indigenous building techniques, construction costs can be reduced. Instead of relying heavily on imported materials, integrating locally sourced resources can make housing more accessible to the average Ghanaian.

Striking a balance – merging tradition with modernism

One of the critical questions in Ghana’s housing evolution is whether modernization should completely replace traditional architecture or if there is room for a fusion of both. The truth is, there is no need to erase tradition in the name of progress.

Rather, the best approach is to merge the two—creating designs that honor Ghana’s cultural identity while embracing modern advancements.

For example, while modern gated communities have become the preferred housing choice for the middle class, incorporating traditional elements such as inner courtyards, verandas, and natural ventilation can create a familiar and comfortable living environment.

Similarly, the practice of decorating homes with adinkra symbols or using local materials can keep Ghanaian heritage alive in modern developments.

The challenge of cultural erosion in modern housing

Despite the benefits of integrating cultural influences into housing, one of the biggest challenges facing Ghana’s construction industry is the rapid adoption of Westernized building styles that often disregard traditional ways of living.

Many modern luxury apartments and middle-income dwellings are designed with little consideration for Ghana’s climatic conditions and cultural norms (Nduom, 2018).

Furthermore, as globalization continues to influence lifestyles, younger generations may gradually lose appreciation for indigenous architecture. Without intentional efforts to preserve and incorporate Ghanaian cultural elements, the country risks losing a significant part of its architectural identity.

Conclusion – a way forward

As Ghana’s housing and construction industry continues to grow, it is crucial to acknowledge the profound role that culture plays in shaping the built environment. While modernization is inevitable, it should not come at the cost of cultural heritage.

By finding a middle ground—where tradition and innovation coexist—Ghana can create housing solutions that are sustainable, practical, and deeply connected to its identity.

Architects, urban planners, and developers must engage with local communities, learning from traditional practices while integrating contemporary advancements.

The future of housing in Ghana should not be an either-or choice between tradition and modernism, but rather a harmonious blend that reflects both the past and the future.

Our homes should tell our stories, honor our roots, and yet stand ready for the generations to come. Culture and construction are not separate entities—they are two sides of the same coin, shaping the way we live, interact, and define the very essence of home.

Shatta Wale slammed for hosting Nigerian TikToker Peller, offering him ‘VIP’ treatment

Ghanaian dancehall musician, Shatta Wale Ghanaian dancehall musician, Shatta Wale

Ghanaian dancehall musician, Shatta Wale, has faced attacks online for treating Nigerian TikTok influencer, Peller, to a grand welcome upon his arrival in Ghana.

It will be recalled that Jarvis, Peller’s girlfriend, previously stirred controversy during a visit to Ghana when she claimed the country does not have as many luxury cars as often portrayed on social media.

In response to those claims, Shatta Wale took to his social media at the time to invite Peller to Ghana, promising to show him his collection of luxury cars whenever he visits.

Now, on April 10, 2025, Shatta Wale has officially welcomed the Nigerian TikToker to the country.

Videos circulating on social media show Peller being glamorously received by Shatta Wale’s team at Kotoka International Airport.

In a separate video, Peller is seen arriving in a black Escalade before being ushered into one of Shatta Wale’s apartments by his management.

What some view as a harmless gesture has since sparked backlash online, with netizens accusing Shatta Wale of giving unnecessary attention and publicity to a mere TikTok influencer.

Critics have argued that the social media personality doesn’t deserve such recognition.

They have insisted that A-list Nigerian celebrities would not extend the same treatment to Ghanaian influencers.

Sekondi MP vows to sue NPP members over alleged cocaine connection

0

The Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Blay Nyameke Armah, has announced his intention to take legal action against members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have implicated him in connection with a $350 million cocaine bust.

The case stems from a recent operation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), which on Tuesday, March 25, intercepted a tipper truck at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast.

Acting on intelligence, officers discovered approximately 3.3 tonnes of cocaine—143 sacks of the illegal substance—concealed beneath sand, en route to Accra from the Western Region.

Since the seizure, the Sekondi MP has been mentioned in connection with the case. However, in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Armah strongly denied any involvement and revealed plans to report the matter to the Speaker of Parliament for a formal investigation.

“I have no knowledge about anything like that,” he said. “My first time hearing it was when Hon. Ntim Fordjour made those allegations that such things had happened in Sekondi-Takoradi, and a known Parliamentary Candidate in the Western Region is part of the deal.”

He continued, “Then on Monday, Lawuratu Musah-Saaka, a communicator of the NPP, also made a similar allegation but specifically referring to me.”

The Sekondi MP emphasized that his legal action would target all parties responsible for spreading the allegations.

“The writ will target the one who made the allegation, the platform that hosted it, the producer of that platform, and also the NPP communicator who made that allegation,” he stated.

Ghana Chapter of Queen Elizabeth II’s Commonwealth Trust launched

0

The British High Commission in Accra has officially launched the Ghana chapter of Queen Elizabeth II’s Commonwealth Trust, an initiative founded in honour of the late British monarch.

The programme aims to nurture young people from across the country, equipping them with the skills and mindset to become future leaders in Ghana and across the African continent.

Speaking at the launch in Accra on Thursday, 10 April, former Rector of GIMPA, Professor Emeritus Stephen Adei—one of the guests of honour—commended the initiative and emphasised the importance of giving young people the right opportunities.

He encouraged them to remain in Ghana and work towards its development rather than seeking greener pastures abroad, which often worsens their situations.

“There is a need for us to encourage young people and motivate them to believe in themselves—that they can succeed locally. They don’t have to cross the Sahara Desert in search of the meritarian,” he said, referencing the hardships many face while migrating.

Professor Dean Roberts Jnr, High Commissioner and Continental Vice President of UNIPGC USA, as well as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was also present at the event.

He urged world leaders to offer genuine hope to the youth in their countries.

“Please, leaders of the world, remember what empowerment truly means. Empowerment is not just employment or handing someone money. Empowerment means giving them hope—letting them live through hope,” he stated.

He stressed the importance of peace and security, warning against provoking young people. “If there is no security, there is no peace. I told someone, ‘Don’t provoke the youth.’ In the universities, when the youth are angry and they bring out weapons you never expected to find under their beds, you’ll run. You’ll flee your barracks, because they have more experience than you realise.”

Deputy British High Commissioner to Ghana, Keith McMahon, expressed his belief in the potential of Ghanaian and African youth. He noted that the Trust provides a vital platform to empower the continent’s next generation of leaders.

“This is a proud moment not only for Ghana but for the entire Commonwealth family, as we take another step towards unlocking the full potential of young leaders across our community,” he said.

Kingsley Kwaku Pinkrah, Chairman of the Ghana Chapter of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, added:
“It is essential to recognise the immense potential that resides within the youth of Ghana. You are the drivers of innovation, the problem-solvers, and the voices of the future. In Ghana, as across the Commonwealth, young people represent a powerful force for change. The future of our economy, our environment, and our social fabric depends on the energy, creativity, and commitment that the youth bring to the table.”

He explained that the QCT Ghana Chapter seeks to empower youth leaders with the tools they need to scale their initiatives, build sustainable enterprises, and positively impact their communities.

“But we cannot do this alone. We call on the government, private sector, development partners, civil society, and international organisations to collaborate with us in building an ecosystem that promotes equity, access, and agency for all young people—particularly those from marginalised and underserved communities,” he added.

A total of 33 young people have been selected for the Trust in Ghana, most of whom are university graduates, students, and young entrepreneurs.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, established with a strong commitment to youth empowerment, has become a beacon of hope for young social entrepreneurs.

Through the QCT, young people across the Commonwealth have been supported to transform their communities, drive innovation, and deliver sustainable solutions to pressing global challenges.

Since its inception, QCT has supported over 200 young entrepreneurs across the Commonwealth—and this number is expected to grow with the establishment of the Ghana Chapter.

Some of the impacts made over the years include seed grants provided to over 50 social entrepreneurs, enabling them to implement innovative solutions in areas such as climate change, education, and healthcare, capacity-building programmes for hundreds of young entrepreneurs, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to scale their businesses and create employment and also, partnerships have been formed with leading organisations to unlock further opportunities for collaboration, funding, and mentorship for youth-led initiatives worldwide.

CILAG members urged to prioritise ethical practices – NIC boss

Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Abiba Zakariah Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Abiba Zakariah

The Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Abiba Zakariah, has reminded members of the Chartered Insurance Ladies Association of Ghana (CILAG) to underwrite and practise insurance with integrity.

“The first duty as professional insurance ladies especially is to underwrite with integrity and not allow themselves to be cowered into doing unhealthy practices for negative things, lest they be remembered as weak professionals,”

She made this known during her address at the launch of CILAG’s 10th anniversary, held at the auditorium of the National Insurance Commission (NIC) in Accra on April 10, 2025.

The Acting Commissioner, who is also a founding member and the first President of CILAG, urged members to contribute to the sanitization of the insurance industry, one of the new strategic pillars in regulatory policy and to join in the conversation around market penetration.

She further encouraged them to be part of the broader success story of bringing Africa and the world to Ghana through insurance-focused discussions.

She added, “Women perform 60% of the world’s work and produce 50% of the food yet earn only 10% of the income. Whether the issue is poverty, improving education in the developing world, or fighting global climate change or addressing nearly any other challenge we face, empowering women is critical if we want to succeed. Women have abilities that are far beyond our thoughts and capabilities.”

Dr Zakariah urged the ladies to embrace current technological trends to become better versions of themselves as professionals.

Francisca Karikari, CEO of Glorygate Capital and an experienced figure in the insurance sector, served as chairperson for the event.

She commended the association’s leadership, under its President Nicholina Naa Yeye Aduamuah, for its efficiency and achievements.

These include the annual orphanage project, the establishment of an awards scheme for the best female student at the Ghana Insurance College (GIC), and the organisation of health and wellness webinars for members.

She also highlighted CILAG’s instrumental role in the formation of the African Insurance Women Association (AIWA).

Mrs. Karikari encouraged members to “continue attending events and participate in activities to network, learn and relearn to advance their careers.”

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch, President of CILAG, Nicholina Naa Yeye Aduamuah, shared the association’s vision which aims to promote integrity and support among professional insurance women, encouraging their growth up the corporate ladder.

She emphasised that beyond personal development, CILAG also aims to uplift others through mentorship programmes.

Aduamuah also mentioned that while the association receives some financial support from industry players, raising funds for their projects remains one of their biggest challenges.

In congratulating the association on its 10th anniversary, Ms. Rebekah Ratliff, Vice-President of the North American Insurance Association (NAIA) and special guest at the event, expressed NAIA’s readiness to collaborate with CILAG and the broader Ghanaian insurance industry.

The event was also attended by patrons and executives of CILAG, the Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, Bernard Ohemeng Baah, the President of the Young Insurance Professionals, Lawrence Daniels, and the CEO of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana, Elsy Adadey.

Other distinguished guests included Davis Iyasere, Secretary-General of the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), Faris Atrikie, Managing Director of Priority Insurance, and CEOs of several insurance companies.

Former boxer Brimah Kamako, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has already begun work on the Bukom astroturf after taking over as its caretaker.

In multiple videos shared on his official TikTok page, Bukom Banku, along with his two sons, Abubakar Kamoko and Mustapha Kamoko, were seen maintaining the pitch.

The former boxer has taken control of the facility, which was previously managed by a committee appointed in 2024.

The Bukom astroturf was commissioned in 2020 after the previous government transformed the original sandy park into a modern facility as part of its sports infrastructure development agenda.

However, by 2022, the pitch had deteriorated, with residents blaming the government for rushing its construction.

The park was renovated in 2024, with an administrative office added.

‘Help me save my daughter’s sight’ – Mother of 16-year-old girl hit by bullet cries for support

0

The family of 16-year-old Suzi Adwoa Penamang, a student of the Seventh Day Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Ashanti Region, is making an urgent appeal for financial assistance to save their daughter from going blind.

This follows a tragic incident on Friday, April 4, 2025, when Suzi was struck in the eye by a stray bullet during a confrontation between a student, Bernard Amoabeng, and some of his classmates.

The altercation reportedly began as a dispute over whether a gun Bernard possessed was real and functional. In an attempt to prove its authenticity, Bernard allegedly discharged the weapon, unintentionally hitting Suzi in the eye.

Suzi was initially admitted to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and has since been discharged. However, her condition remains critical, and she continues to undergo regular medical reviews. Her family fears that without immediate medical intervention, she could lose her sight permanently.

The case has sparked public outrage and reignited concerns about student safety, indiscipline, and the disturbing presence of weapons in schools. Many have called for urgent reforms and stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Narrating the family’s ordeal, Suzi’s mother, Afia Comfort, shared the emotional and physical toll the incident has taken on her daughter.

“All I need from Ghanaians is to help me get back the eye of my daughter. I beg you, help me operate on the eye of my daughter. I don’t have any help from anywhere. The MPs, President Mahama, please come to my aid. My daughter cannot sleep or eat. I beg you, help me,” the distraught mother pleaded.

The family is now calling on the public, government officials, and benevolent individuals for support to fund Suzi’s treatment and restore her vision.

IGP sets new direction of engagement with media

0

The Police Administration has pledged to deepen engagement with citizens and the media to ensure transparency and trust for efficient operations.

The Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said the active participation of the people would enable the police to tackle crime head-on by taking the fight to robbers and law-breakers in various communities in the country.

“And also, galamsey has become an issue that all of us are dealing with and the IGP has made a commitment that he is going to take the fight up.

“As we speak, in our regions where we have some galamsey activities, our regional commanders are working hard to stem the tide,” she added.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi was speaking during a working visit to the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday to formally brief the paper of the new direction of the service.

She was accompanied by ASP Richmond Mensah, Staff Officer at the Public Affairs Directorate; ASP Angela Kumi, Officer responsible for External Engagements, and Chief Inspector Gideon Boatse, a Station Officer at the Directorate, among others.

New direction

The director explained further that “we have a new administration, a new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tettey Yohunu, who extends his regards to all of you.

“He has a new management team on board and a new direction for the service.

One of the key areas that has been affected in this new vision for the service is our engagement with the general public, the communities we serve,” she said.

The director, however, said that to be able to realise their objectives, they would also need the active support of the media.

“You have been our partners over the years and if our stories will go out, if the public will get to know what we are doing, if our efforts in fighting crime will be heard, we will need you to do so.

“I think over the years the administration adopted a different approach to our communication and media strategy.

“Over time, we received a lot of feedback from the general public, from our stakeholders, from the media.

And it is based on those feedback that we have shaped our vision going forward by engaging you directly.

“The IGP’s instruction is clear. Get to the people you serve, take policing closer to them, let them understand what you do, let them see what you are doing, talk to them and bring on board the media, because without them we cannot go far,” she said.

The Editor, Graphic, Theophilus Yartey, said his outfit has had good relations with the police over the years.

“We are happy to welcome you here. Graphic is not only the leading newspaper in the country but also the most credible, and will be 75 years in October this year.

“So, it tells you that we have managed to reinvent ourselves.

We have managed to make ourselves relevant to our stakeholders, our readers and our audience and everybody. We will be around in perpetuity,” he added.

The Editor pledged to enhance collaboration with the police, saying “we will ensure that we always knock on your doors.

We will always be calling you for news because that is all that we deal in. We sell information”.

Skin disease outbreak affects over 46 residents in Avetakpo community

0

Avetakpo (V/R), April. 10, GNA – An outbreak of a communicable skin disease has hit several residents of Avetakpo, a farming community in the Ho West district.

The disease, which has spread to neighboring communities, has affected over 46 residents, leaving both children and adults to experience sleep deprivation, acute and prolonged bodily pains.

Togbe Kwasi Amedor III of Mepe Gbavie-Dekume has expressed deep concern over the outbreak, citing the community’s inability to access medical treatment due to lack of funds.

Mama Aku Seme II, the Queenmother of the area, engaged officials of the Ho West District Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), who mentioned that a required budget of GH₵ 6,642.50 would be needed to combat the disease.

“We are pleading with the government to come to our aid because we are not able to raise the total of GH₵ 6,642.50 estimated budget,” Togbe Amedor stated.

The chief called for immediate government intervention to support the community with funds for mass medical treatment and stringent measures to prevent further infections.

The Ghana News Agency has observed that the community’s situation is further complicated by inadequate access to clean drinking water, with residents sharing water sources with cattle and animals, potentially contributing to the outbreak.

Additionally, health officials have not provided the actual name of the disease or its source, leaving the community uncertain.

Some victims urged immediate government support to address the outbreak as the situation becomes increasingly serious.

The GNA also observed that a comprehensive response is needed, including emergency funding to support mass medical treatment and disease investigation to determine the source and nature of the disease.

There is also the urgent need of water and sanitation interventions to improve access to clean drinking water to prevent further outbreaks.

Mr Courage Dogbe, Health Promotion Officer of the GHS, said the number of infections was exaggerated mostly because of poor hygiene.

He said the infection is fungal in nature and GHS are on top of the situation.

A daring young Ghanaian man seen dancing at a wedding ceremony A daring young Ghanaian man seen dancing at a wedding ceremony

A daring young Ghanaian man has sparked a buzz on social media after a video of his bold and entertaining dance performance at a recent wedding went viral.

The unidentified performer, dressed in a stylish kaftan and matching slippers, took to the dance floor and showed his impressive dance moves in front of the newlywed couple.

Together with two of his friends, they danced to Patoranking’s hit song “Love You Die,” featuring Diamond Platnumz, which was released in 2017.

What made the scene even more striking was that the young man managed to balance a plate filled with balls of banku, a traditional Ghanaian dish, while dancing to the music.

As he joyfully performed in front of the couple, two gentlemen attempted to pull him away, but he refused to leave.

They eventually walked off the dance floor, leaving the young man to continue his routine.

Despite being signalled and spoken to by others, he remained unfazed and kept dancing.

It was after this point that his friends joined him, showcasing their impressive moves as the song played, resulting in a lively show that left the wedding guests cheering.

The buzz surrounding his performance took an intriguing turn when social media users began speculating about his connection to the bride.

Some alleged that he was the bride’s ex-boyfriend, while others disputed this claim.

However, someone who claimed to be a guest at the wedding commented on the video, explaining that the young men were friends of the groom and were simply celebrating his happiness.

Regardless of the uncertainty about his relationship with the bride, one thing was clear; the young man’s confidence and dance skills earned him a spot in the hearts of many.

As the debate continues, one can’t help but admire his carefree spirit and impressive dance moves.
