Mahama didn’t receive vehicles from NSB

0

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has strongly denied claims that President John Dramani Mahama received three high-end vehicles prior to his swearing-in.

The denial follows a memo allegedly authored by former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and addressed to the National Security Coordinator.

In the memo, Adu-Boahene claimed that GH¢5,135,000 was disbursed to the special aide of the President-elect for the purchase of luxury vehicles, including a Nissan Patrol Platinum, a 2024 Nissan Patrol Titanium, and a 2022 Land Cruiser GXR.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Friday, May 9, 2025, Dr. Tanko-Computer dismissed the allegations, accusing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of fabricating the story to tarnish the image of President Mahama.

“I don’t know anything about this. How can that be possible? I know the calibre of the President we have, he won’t stoop that low to this,” he asserted.

Scores injured in multi-vehicle crash at Krofrom in Kumasi

0

Scores of people sustained injuries following a multi-vehicle accident at Krofrom, a busy suburb of Kumasi, on Friday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, a cargo truck reportedly suffered brake failure while descending a major traffic intersection near the X5 Pub during a heavy downpour.

The truck ploughed through several cars, motorbikes, and commercial tricycles – locally known as ‘pragya’ – causing widespread panic and destruction.

Concerned passersby forcibly opened mangled vehicles to rescue trapped drivers and passengers. Many of the injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for emergency treatment.

The full extent of the casualties remains unclear, but road users are urged to exercise caution during adverse weather conditions.

BPS calls for dialogue on transportation of hazardous substances

0

The Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Public Safety, Nana Yaw Akwada, has called for a broader stakeholder engagement to address the risks associated with transporting hazardous materials on Ghana’s roads.

His comments come in response to a proposal by the Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, suggesting a daytime ban on transporting dangerous substances such as LPG and dynamite.

Amaliba explained that moving these materials at night could reduce the risk of accidents that threaten human life, property, and the environment.

While acknowledging the intent behind the suggestion, Nana Yaw Akwada, in an interview with Citi News on Friday, May 9, described the proposed ban as an unsustainable solution.

He emphasised that the safe transportation of hazardous materials depends more on robust protocols and oversight than on the time of day.

He stressed the need for a national dialogue involving all relevant regulatory bodies to craft a comprehensive policy framework.

“I believe that we have to have a broader national discussion on this, involving the key stakeholders within this consideration. The Environmental Protection Agency, the Minerals Commission, the Department of Factories, and of Training and Licensing for people who move such substances.

“If we can have that neutral discussion, we wouldn’t have to worry about what time of day these substances are moved,” he said.

Asantehene prides in granddaughter preserving and promoting Ghanaian heritage

0

The 75th birthday of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, attracted a vibrant gathering of royal family members and other well-wishers to the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Among those paying homage was the Otumfuo’s granddaughter, Amma Prempeh, a distinguished BBC journalist and producer of Ghana’s Kente feature film, whose visit coincided with the traditional Awukudae observance.

She was pleased to present a unique commemorative gift – a $25,000 Jeffrey Okyere Agyei’s Sankofa Kente artwork, representing the importance of learning from the past.

“Granpa wasn’t expecting me in Ghana, so he was very happy and surprised about my visit,” an excited Amma stated.

The gathering provided an opportunity for Amma Prempeh to brief the Asantehene on her widely acclaimed documentary about the royal fabric, ‘Kente,’ which has been screened across the Americas and Europe.

Her film, “The Importance of Kente to Ghanaians and Black Africans,” is Ghana’s first Kente culture story documentary production. It was first premiered in Kumasi on August 26, 2023, and later screened in Accra on September 10, 2023.

The self-funded documentary delves into the origins, intricate artistry, captivating history, and enduring beauty of Ghana’s iconic Kente fabric.

It highlights how Kente weaving supports local communities committed to preserving its history, development, and commercial aspects.

The documentary also explores Kente’s evolving role in human rights activism.

Through Amma Prempeh’s tireless advocacy, Kente achieved significant international recognition.

UNESCO officially recognised Kente as an Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 4, 2024, during its 19th session in Paraguay.

Kente’s remarkable durability, complex designs, and profound aesthetic appeal contribute to its rich symbolism and diverse interpretations, representing not only Black identity but also Africa in a broader context.

Joe Ghartey calls for ceasefire in NPP amid rising tensions

Former Attorney-General, Minister of Justice, and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, has called for a ceasefire between feuding factions within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging unity and introspection at a time when the party faces internal division following its recent electoral defeat.

Ghartey’s appeal comes amid escalating tensions between prominent party figures, most notably the ongoing public spat between Abronye DC, Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, and former presidential aspirant and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

Their feud has further exposed growing cracks within the party’s rank and file, prompting concerns among supporters and senior members alike about the party’s cohesion and electoral future.

According to Joe Ghartey, no single individual, regardless of stature or popularity, can secure victory for the NPP in the next general election without the full backing and unity of the party.

“There is no point in pointing fingers against each other”, saying that as a popular Ghanaian proverb says ‘when you point a finger at one person the other four point at you.'”

He emphasised the urgent need for “cool heads, sober reflection, and strategic thinking,” urging members to move away from finger-pointing and blame-shifting.

While acknowledging that leadership often bears the brunt of criticism, “since it is said that a fish rots from the head”, Ghartey was quick to point out that the issues undermining the party go beyond top-level leadership.

He stated that problems exist across all levels, including operational inefficiencies and internal disconnects.

Drawing from personal experience, he revealed that during his tenure as a Cabinet Minister, he sometimes found it difficult to reach certain Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in state institutions.

However, he declined to name those individuals, saying doing so now would not serve a constructive purpose.

Turning to the feud between Abronye DC and Kennedy Agyapong, Ghartey called for restraint and reconciliation, appealing directly to both figures and their supporters to stand down for the sake of the party’s survival and credibility.

“This is not the time for personal battles. This is the time for rebuilding,” he urged.

Joe Ghartey Calls For Ceasefire In NPP

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice and former Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Joe Ghartey, has called for a ceasefire between feuding factions in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Hon. Ghartey, there was no single person in the Party who could by himself or herself win the next election.

He said what was necessary now was “cool heads, sober reflection and strategic thinking.

He stressed that “There is no point in pointing fingers against each other”, saying that as a popular Ghanaian proverb says “when you point a finger at one person the other four point at you.”

He noted that since it is said that a fish rots from its head, it was not surprising that a lot of the blame was being heaped on the top.

However, he said at all levels things fell apart.

As a Cabinet Minister for example, Hon. Ghartey said he found it difficult to reach some CEOs but it would serve no useful purpose to name those persons at this time. On the current feud between Abronye and Kennedy Agyapong, he pleaded that they and their supporters should please ceasefire.

He said the time that some of them where quiet for the Party to be torn apart and destroyed by selfish interest was over. He concluded that “we have been taught a lesson but it is just bent, not broken”.

US Donates Armoured Cars To GAF

The US Embassy has handed over 14 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at a brief ceremony yesterday, in Accra.

The gesture underscores the United States’ commitment to strategic cooperation with Ghana, supporting the country’s critical role in maintaining peace and securing borders.

US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, explained that the APCs require special training for both drivers and maintenance personnel. According to her, 40 soldiers have been trained over the last four weeks on how to maintain and utilise the vehicles.

“These APCs requires special training course for both drivers and maintenance personnel. 40 GAF soldiers have been trained over the last four weeks, covering manoeuvring techniques, safety, basic and emergency maintenance requirements,” she explained.

She added that personnel should expect further training in the next few months in order to sharpen driving and maintenance skills. She, however, warned that improper handling of the vehicles could lead to accidents, adding that it was not just a handover, but a commitment to their proper care and maintenance.

“To keep them in good condition, expect additional training in the months to come to sharpen driving and maintenance skills. Our combat experiences not only highlight the unique safety features of the APCs, but also demonstrated that unsafe handling can lead to accidents. So, it is a package, not just a handover of the vehicle, it is a commitment to their maintenance,” she added.

The Minister for Defence, Omane Boamah, intimated that the donation would go a long way to strengthen the operational readiness of GAF, enhance troop protection, mobility and effectiveness in counter terrorism operations as well as internal security efforts including the fight against illegal mining.

“This generous donation will go a long way in strengthening the operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces. These highly capable mine resistance ambush protected vehicles will enhance troop protection, mobility, and effectiveness in counter terrorism operations and internal security efforts, including the fight against illegal mining,” he stressed.

He went on to say that they are not only assets for national defence, but instruments for regional peace and global solidarity, adding that the US has been instrumental in the capacity building journey of GAF.

“The vehicles are not only assets for national defence but instruments for regional peace and global solidarity. Over the years, the United States has remained a dependable partner in the capacity building journey of GAF, providing training, technical assistance and equipment support. Today’s handing over is yet another milestone in our enduring defence cooperation, and we are deeply appreciative of your continued support,” he said.

Joe Ghartey urges ceasefire in NPP amid internal tensions

0

A senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joe Ghartey, has called for calm and unity within the party, urging feuding factions to end public spats and shift focus to strategic rebuilding efforts ahead of the next general elections.

In an interview addressing growing tensions within the opposition party, the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice said what the NPP needs now is “cool heads, sober reflection and strategic thinking.”

“There is no point in pointing fingers at each other,” Ghartey stressed. Citing a well-known Ghanaian proverb, he added, “When you point a finger at one person, the other four point at you.”

While acknowledging that a large share of the blame is being directed at the party’s leadership, Ghartey suggested the challenges are not limited to the top. “A fish rots from the head, they say, so it’s not surprising a lot of the blame is going to the top. But at all levels, things fell apart,” he noted.

Sharing his personal experience as a former Cabinet Minister, he revealed that he sometimes struggled to reach certain Chief Executive Officers during his tenure, but said he would not name them as it would serve no constructive purpose.

Commenting specifically on the public feud between Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe (popularly known as Abronye), and former presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, Ghartey appealed for calm. “They and their supporters should please ceasefire,” he pleaded.

He warned that the days when party members remained silent while the NPP was torn apart by internal selfish interests must end. “The time that some of us were quiet for the Party to be torn apart and destroyed by selfish interest is over,” he said.

Despite recent setbacks, Ghartey expressed optimism about the party’s future. “We have been taught a lesson, but it is just bent, not broken,” he concluded.

Ghartey’s comments come at a critical moment for the NPP as it grapples with internal discontent following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. His call for reconciliation adds to growing voices within the party urging reflection, healing, and unity.

‘Eeeiii President Mahama!’ – Afenyo Markin criticises Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy policy, which aims to create employment opportunities and foster a business-friendly environment.

According to the Effutu MP, rather than helping businesses thrive, the initiative is instead leading to their collapse.

Speaking at a press conference in response to Mahama’s account of his first 120 days in office, Afenyo-Markin argued that the Mahama-led administration should have continued the One District, One Factory (1D1F) policy introduced by the NPP government.

Instead, he claimed the current administration abandoned it in favor of the 24-Hour Economy policy.

“The president pledged in January to implement a 24-Hour Economy to stimulate local industries and attract investments. But, instead of building upon the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative – a bold, pragmatic program that used tax incentives to drive industrialization — the government of President Mahama has shelved it.

“The government has discarded, abandoned and killed it. Factories that were planned under the previous administration now sit idle; investment plans have stalled. The message to investors is loud and clear: ‘You are not safe here anymore,'” he said.

Afenyo-Markin once again expressed shock that the government failed to include the 24-Hour Economy initiative in the last State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered in Parliament.

He criticised the administration’s “resetting agenda,” arguing that instead of benefiting Ghanaians, it is suffocating the people.

He further questioned the president, demanding to know the whereabouts of the promised 24-Hour Economy.

He said; “Mr President, your reset is not a lifeline for the economy; it is a suffocating lockdown on production. You are not creating jobs — you are killing them. Now, it is rich to hear the president tell us in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the flagship 24-Hour Economy program also known as ‘1-3-3’ (one job, three shifts) would find space in the 2025 budget.

“That is what the president assured us that his finance minister, Dr Ato Forson, would formally introduce the policy. But what did we hear when Dr Forson appeared before Parliament with the budget statement? No mention was made of the 24-Hour Economy — their own famous flagship program.”

He added that; “Eeeeiii President Mahama, where is the 24-Hour Economy? You promised to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. This should find space in your first-year budget if you truly meant business,” Afenyo-Markin asserted.

Zambia says it is tackling ‘systematic’ theft after US slashes medical aid

0

Malaria, HIV and TB treatment will become scarcer as a result of the US's decision Malaria, HIV and TB treatment will become scarcer as a result of the US’s decision

Zambia says it has acted to halt the “systematic theft” of medical donations, after the US announced it was pulling the plug on $50m (£37m) of health sector funding to the country.

Malaria, HIV, and TB treatment will become scarcer as a result of the US’s decision.

But Zambia’s Health Minister, Elijah Muchima, says there is “no immediate risk of shortages”, and that 75% of the population can readily access essential drugs.

“We are no longer willing to underwrite the personal enrichment of fraudsters or the corrupt when patients go without or have to buy life-saving medications that we have provided for free,” US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales said on Thursday.

In response, Zambia’s health minister, Muchim, thanked the US for its “generous support” but said the problem of theft predated the current government, which took office in 2021.

He also said several Zambian officials had been sacked following the thefts identified by the US, and that “an advanced digital stock tracking system” had been set up to help monitor supplies of medicines.

The US cuts are separate from the sweeping foreign aid freeze announced by President Donald Trump in January.

According to the US ambassador, the “difficult” decision to cut funding was taken after repeated warnings to the Zambian government to safeguard vital drugs meant for the country’s most vulnerable patients.

The US accounts for about a third of public health spending in Zambia, according to a statement from the US embassy in the country.

But US officials said they had discovered the “country-wide theft” of medical products that were intended to be distributed for free to the public and were now being sold by private pharmacies.

More than 2,000 pharmacies across Zambia were found selling donated drugs and medical supplies in a year-long investigation conducted by the US embassy.

“Shockingly, across these visits, 95 percent of the pharmacies that were selling the kinds of products that the United States provides were also selling stolen goods,” the statement said.

Nearly half of the pharmacies visited were found selling medication and supplies donated by the US government, it said.

Other pharmacies were also selling stolen medical stocks purchased by the Zambian government, the Global Fund, and other donor, it added.

The US embassy said it had presented its findings and offered experts to help stop further theft and bring the culprits to justice in April last year, but no action was taken.

“I regret that to date, the government’s actions have fallen drastically short of demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding US assistance and the lives we aim to save,” the embassy said.

Zambia’s law enforcement operations have focused on “low-level actors” and have led to the arrest of “only a few mid-level officials” instead of investigating supply sources and pursuing the masterminds behind the theft of medicines, according to the US embassy.

Gonzales said the US “can no longer justify to the American taxpayer continuing to provide such massive levels of assistance”.

He said the cuts would affect drugs to treat malaria, HIV, and TB.

“This is not a decision we have taken lightly,” Gonzales said, shedding tears as he explained how the measure would affect Zambian patients.

The aid cuts will take effect January next year to give the Zambian government time to develop alternative arrangements but he said “the decision had been made”.

Since the Trump administration took office, it has cut billions of dollars in global health programmes, hitting African countries, including Zambia, where HIV remains a major threat, especially for adolescents and young adults.

Trump announced the aid freeze on his first day in office in January, in line with his “America First” foreign policy.

The aid cuts have affected health programmes across Africa, including shipments of critical medical supplies, including HIV drugs.

The majority of the US Agency for International Development’s (USAID) programmes, which provided health and humanitarian assistance to vulnerable nations, have since been terminated.

In March, Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema said Trump had “slapped us on both cheeks”, saying it was time for his country to strengthen its treasury to procure its medicines.

In fact, with the right techniques and a bit of creativity, you can achieve stunning looks that are both simple and time-efficient. This article delves into effortless ways to style your natural hair, ensuring you feel confident and radiant every day.

Perfect for those on-the-move days, the wash-and-go is a staple in the natural hair community. After cleansing and conditioning, apply a leave-in conditioner followed by a curl-defining gel or cream. Scrunch your hair gently and let it air dry or use a diffuser. This method enhances your natural curl pattern, giving you a fresh and bouncy look with minimal effort.

Protective styles like two-strand twists or braids not only safeguard your hair from environmental stressors but also offer versatility. These styles can be worn as-is or unraveled for a voluminous twist-out or braid-out. They’re perfect for reducing daily manipulation and promoting hair growth.

When in doubt, puff it out! The high puff is a chic and easy style that gathers your hair atop your head, showcasing your curls. Use a soft hairband or a stretched-out elastic to secure your hair, fluff it out, and you’re good to go. It’s a go-to style that exudes confidence and beauty.

Bantu knots are both a protective style and a way to achieve defined curls. Section your hair, twist each section, and wrap it into a knot. Once dry, unravel for beautiful, springy curls. Alternatively, wear the knots as-is for a bold and edgy look.

Elevate any hairstyle with accessories. Headbands, scarves, hair clips, and beads can transform a simple style into a statement. They’re also great for adding a pop of color or hiding a bad hair day.

MCE confirmation in Bole postponed to May 12 amid youth protests

0

The confirmation of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Bole District in the Savanah Region has been officially postponed to Monday, May 12, following tensions and protests by sections of the youth in the district.

The decision to reschedule the process was taken after chaotic scenes erupted in Bole on Friday, May 9, when angry youth took to the streets to express their disapproval of the nominee.

Protesters were seen waving placards and burning tyres, prompting security concerns and the need to calm tensions.

In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, May 9, the Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribi, explained that the original date for the confirmation was never May 9, as some had assumed.

“We first proposed the 7th of May as the date for the confirmation, but the little interaction and dialogue is something that needs to be done, so we have postponed it to Monday, 12 May,” he stated.

The Minister stressed that no formal Assembly Member gathering was held on May 9, and that the assumption of a scheduled confirmation on that day was inaccurate.

“No Assembly Member was gathering for the confirmation of MCE today. The actual date was on Wednesday. It was first scheduled by the Presiding Member on Wednesday, and it was again postponed to Monday, 12 May.”

He further revealed that the youth had earlier notified the Ghana Police Service of their intent to embark on a demonstration that would span Tuesday and Wednesday of the same week, describing the action as an attempt to interfere with the confirmation process.

“The youth also wrote to the Ghana Police Service notifying them of their intent to demonstrate. Indeed, they said they were going to demonstrate on a Tuesday and continue on Wednesday, and culminate the demonstration by coming to submit the petition to the Coordinating Director on the said Wednesday.

“This was an attempt to provoke the processes of the confirmation. So we advised the Presiding Member and the Assembly to reschedule the date, and they rescheduled it for Monday, which is on the 12th, so there was no process whatsoever for today.

“Savannah has seven districts, and we have had all six confirmed. It is only Bole that is outstanding. By the grace of God, when we go on Monday, the Assembly Members will speak,”he said.

Rent Control resolves 312, refers 18 to court

By Gladys Abakah

Takoradi, May 09, GNA – Mr Courage Cornelius Sonu, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Western Regional Rent Control Department, says the department recorded 428 total cases in 2024.

Meanwhile, 312 were settled by the department amicably, whiles 18 were referred to court for settlement with 98 cases pending.

According to him, there had been a decline in cases compared to 2023, saying in 2023 the department recorded 610 cases.

He noted that the reduction in cases could be attributed to understanding of the rent laws; rights and responsibilities among both tenants and property owners.

Mr Sonu, explained that some of the cases reported to the department were on claims, rent arrears, unlawful rent increment, recovery of possessions, nuisance, and harassment, among others.

He said: “The department is to address cases amicably between parties, and that cases were only referred to court when both parties involved feel dissatisfied with the department’s judgment.”

He encouraged house owners and tenants to always comply with the Rent Control Act to help preserve peace in their various homes.

Cedi strength driven by global tailwinds, local discipline

0

The CEO of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has attributed the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi to a convergence of favourable global conditions and Ghana’s disciplined internal economic policies, stating that “the stars aligned for Ghana.”

Speaking in an in-depth analysis on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Friday, May 9, Jackson said the cedi’s improved performance was the result of a combination of international economic shifts and deliberate domestic policy decisions that put Ghana in a strong position.

“The situation is good. We are in a good space,” Jackson remarked. “We are in a good space because the stars aligned for us and, better still, because of our internal commitments and discipline that we’ve shown this year—we were able to take advantage when the stars aligned.”

External Forces Driving Cedi Appreciation

Jackson highlighted three key global factors that contributed to the cedi’s recent strength:

  • Depreciation of the US Dollar: Triggered by trade tensions during the Trump administration—particularly with China—the U.S. dollar weakened against major global currencies, which improved the relative value of the cedi.

  • Decline in Oil Prices: The global economic slowdown, partly due to the trade war, reduced demand for petroleum products. As Ghana’s largest import, cheaper oil eased the pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

  • Rising Gold Prices: Amid market volatility, investors turned to gold as a safe haven, driving prices up. Ghana directly benefited from this shift. “The icing on the cake,” Jackson noted, was the appreciation of Ghana’s gold reserves, which are held by the central bank.

Ghana’s Strategic Internal Response

Beyond these global developments, Jackson praised the Bank of Ghana for its proactive approach, including efforts to increase the country’s gold reserves and retain more value from gold production.

“First of all, our central bank has consistently sought to increase its gold reserves. By doing that, it was taking advantage of the stars aligning,” he said. “In the last eight years, gold has consistently outperformed the dollar—by over 100%.”

He also underscored the importance of transparent and accountable management of gold policies, which has helped Ghana derive more value from its natural resources.

“The issue of goldbod and its implementation possibly in transparent and an accountable manner meant that we were going to retain far more value in our gold…So there was that internal commitment to prudent economic behaviour,” Jackson explained.

Officials from GSA led by CEO, Prof Ransford Gyampo paid a routine visit to the project site Officials from GSA led by CEO, Prof Ransford Gyampo paid a routine visit to the project site

The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to the completion of the Boankra Inland Port, a strategic infrastructure project aimed at transforming Ghana’s trade and logistics landscape.

Speaking during a routine site inspection, GSA Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ransford Gyampo, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal (BILT) project, which is being constructed by Justmoh Construction Limited. He emphasized that the government is determined to overcome all challenges to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

“The Boankra Inland Port is not just a political promise; it is a national project with immense potential to transform Ghana’s economy. We must move beyond partisan politics and see this through to the end,” Prof. Gyampo stated in an interview with the media.

The inland port, once completed, will serve as a major logistics and transportation hub, easing congestion at the Tema Port, facilitating efficient cargo handling, and providing a one-stop facility for importers, exporters, and logistics service providers. The project also aims to boost trade, create jobs, and drive economic growth, particularly within the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Prof. Gyampo acknowledged public concerns over Ghana’s history of stalled or abandoned infrastructure projects due to political transitions. However, he assured stakeholders that the Boankra project will not suffer a similar fate, citing the government’s continued commitment and the active collaboration between the GSA, contractors, and other key partners.

The CEO of Justmoh Construction Limited, Dr. Justice Amoh, also provided updates on the project, highlighting that while phase one is nearing completion, financial constraints are affecting progress. He appealed to the Ghana Shippers Authority for timely disbursement of funds to keep the work on schedule.

Project Consultant, Dr. J.B. Koranteng-Yorke, noted that additional facilities need to be integrated into the current phase to ensure compliance with international logistics standards.

The Boankra Inland Port is expected to offer a range of services, including container storage, customs clearance, and warehousing. It is projected to be a game-changer in Ghana’s trade ecosystem, significantly reducing turnaround time for cargo and enhancing the country’s competitiveness as a West African logistics hub.

With construction steadily advancing and strong backing from the government and stakeholders, the Boankra Inland Port is on course to become a critical pillar in Ghana’s national infrastructure and economic development agenda.

The 24th anniversary of the tragic May 9 Stadium Disaster was solemnly observed at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, May 9, 2025, as families of the victims, football officials, and government representatives gathered to honour the memory of the 127 fans who lost their lives in Ghana’s worst sporting tragedy.

The disaster occurred on May 9, 2001, during a heated Ghana Premier League fixture between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

What began as crowd unrest escalated into tragedy when police fired tear gas to control the situation, triggering a deadly stampede. A total of 127 fans lost their lives, with many more sustaining injuries in what remains the worst sporting disaster in Ghanaian history.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritising safety at all sporting venues. He assured stakeholders of continuous collaboration to avoid a repeat of the catastrophe.

GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, who addressed the gathering on behalf of the football community, described the event as “a harrowing moment” in the nation’s sporting timeline.

“The best way to honour those we lost is to ensure that it never happens again,” he said. “Through enhanced infrastructure, robust regulations, and our renewed focus on fan safety, we are working hard to prevent a repeat of this tragic event,” he said.

He also pointed to the Enhanced Safety and Security Protocols introduced by the Ghana Football Association and commended the growing investment in sports infrastructure across the country.

Okraku further used the occasion to acknowledge the recent death of Asante Kotoko supporter, Pooley, during an incident in Nsoatre, calling on law enforcement to step up investigations and bring the culprits to book.

The event brought together a wide array of personalities, including Executive Council Members Samuel Aboabire and Gideon Fosu, GHALCA Chairman John Ansah, GFA Chief of Staff Michael Osekere, Chief Finance Officer Collins Dei, and National Juvenile Committee Vice Chairman JoeSalam Abubakar.

Also present was Black Stars assistant coach John Paintsil.

Representatives of Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, the two clubs directly involved in the 2001 tragedy, were also in attendance.

Hearts of Oak’s team included Managing Director Delali Adiamah, former Chairman Harry Zakour, and Alhaji Braimah Akambi, while Asante Kotoko was represented by Marketing Manager Charles Kwaku Hammond and National Supporters Leader Seth Nii Darko.

Others present were Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, his deputies, members of the Ghana Supporters Union, and families of the victims.

The ceremony concluded with interfaith prayers and the laying of wreaths at the May 9 Monument in memory of the departed. Wreaths were laid by the Sports Minister, GFA President, former Hearts of Oak chairman, Asante Kotoko’s marketing chief, and the NSA Director-General.

Top Liberian doctor struck off over qualification doubts

0

Peter Matthew George became the president of Liberia's medical association at the end of last year Peter Matthew George became the president of Liberia’s medical association at the end of last year

The head of Liberia’s doctors’ association has been banned from practising medicine after a regulatory body said it did not have evidence of his initial medical degree.

As part of a qualifications audit, the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) asked Peter Matthew George to provide his professional certificates.

In April, the LMDC told Dr George that it had revoked his licence as he had not given satisfactory proof he had graduated in medicine from the UK’s University of Hertfordshire as, it said, he had been claiming.

Dr George has disputed the LMDC’s findings. He told the BBC there was a “bias” against him because of his advocacy in a row between doctors and the government.

In a letter to Dr George explaining its decision, the LMDC said he had not provided an actual certificate of his qualification from the University of Hertfordshire but instead sent an “award verification letter” which said he had “obtained an MD”.

The LMDC pointed out that “MD” is a qualification acquired in the US and not the UK.

Furthermore, the LMDC said “of utmost concern is that investigation showed that the only University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom does not currently offer a medical degree”.

The university told the BBC that “following a thorough review of our academic records, we can confirm that there is no evidence that this individual was ever awarded any degree by the University nor studied here. Any claim to the contrary is therefore false and constitutes a misrepresentation of our institution.

“We are cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities in Liberia and will continue to support any investigations as required.”

In his education record on LinkedIn, Dr George said he had studied for a “professional doctorate in medicine MD, general medicine” at Hertfordshire between 2010 and 2014. His LinkedIn page has since been taken down.

But in an email to the BBC, Dr George said his primary medical degree was not from the British university. “I never told anyone so. Those are make-up stories,” he wrote.

Asked why he had mentioned the University of Hertfordshire, he said: “Maybe I made an error when writing because am under pressure.”

Instead, he said his initial medical degree was from the University of Central Nicaragua.

He said that since starting practising medicine in Liberia in 2014, and providing his qualifications to the authorities at the time, no-one had raised an issue with his work.

In fact, he said, he had been promoted and praised for improving the medical facilities at the Chief Jallah Lone Government Hospital in Gbarpolu county.

“I have served the Liberian health sector diligently for over a decade with no record of misconduct,” he said.

Dr George argued that problems started to arise once he became the president of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA) in December last year.

He said he was continuing “the long-standing advocacy for the rights and welfare of doctors and dentists in the country” and said hostility against him began after the LMDA raised issues with the “reclassification of all government-employed specialists and consultants”.

The news that he had been barred from the profession has only just emerged as Dr George was given 15 working days to respond. The medical council said it did not receive a response.

In a statement, the LMDA said it had now “nullified” his presidency and that he was no longer a member of the association.

We have no hand in the agitations – NPP Bole-Bamboi on MCE nominee tensions

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bole-Bamboi Constituency has distanced itself from recent unrest over the nomination of Abdulai Muhmod as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bole.

In a press statement dated May 9, 2025, and signed by Constituency Secretary M. Shiraz-Deen, the party denied any involvement in the agitations, describing claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as false.

The statement clarified that the NPP has no interest in who is nominated under the current NDC administration, as long as the nominee is competent and capable of representing all ethnic groups fairly while building on past gains.

The party condemned threats to burn down public and private properties, including the home of the late Chief E.A. Mahama, father of former President John Mahama.

The NPP also urged the MCE nominee to address and disown a divisive Facebook post allegedly attributed to him, stating that his silence is “loud.”

The party further called on the Bole-Bamboi MP and the NDC leadership in the Savannah Region to urgently engage stakeholders to resolve the tensions and ensure the confirmation of a nominee accepted by all.

Ghana’s soulful voice Asiama makes powerful debut with ‘Akoma’

0

In a musical era brimming with experimentation, few artists manage to remain rooted in tradition while breaking new ground. Asiama: a Ghanaian singer-songwriter whose soul-stirring sound is redefining what Highlife means for a new generation.

Born Emmanuel Asiamah Mensah in Effiduase, Ashanti Region, Asiama’s journey began in a Seventh-day Adventist household filled with hymns, harmony, and spiritual reflection. As the youngest of five, he absorbed the melodies of church choirs and traditional gospel while moving frequently due to his father’s pastoral work. Each new environment enriched his musical sensibility, sowing the seeds for a voice steeped in both cultural depth and emotional nuance.

By the age of seven, Asiama was leading his own acapella group. At nine, he staged his first concert. He later studied , Theatre, and Dance at the University of Ghana, where he cultivated a multidisciplinary approach to performance–combining lyrical vulnerability with theatrical precision and stage presence.

His debut single ‘Akoma’–named after the Akan Adinkra symbol for ‘the heart’–is a poignant, poetic plea for spiritual strength. At once meditative and musically adventurous, the track positions Asiama as a powerful new voice in West African music. His live performances, shaped by years with Ghana’s top live band The Characters, blend choreography and emotion, building bridges between the sacred and the contemporary.

Mentored by Ghanaian music icon Kwame Yeboah and creatively guided by executive producer Tina “Belove” Atiemo, Asiama’s upcoming debut single explores themes of love, surrender, and legacy. It’s not just a collection of songs–it’s a spiritual document shaped by four years of refinement and revelation.

Asiama is not just preserving Highlife–he’s reimagining it. And with his heart-led sound, it’s clear: the future of Ghanaian Highlife Pop has arrived, and it sings with purpose. ‘Akoma’ is available now on all major digital platforms here:

We didn’t receive money from NPP in 2024; allegations preposterous – CPP fires back

0

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has strongly denied claims that it received financial support from the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government ahead of the 2024 elections.

The CPP stated emphatically that the party relied on its meagre resources and not on any support from the ruling party at the time.

The rebuttal comes after former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss Kwabena Adu-Boahene, currently on trial for allegedly misappropriating GH¢49 million, claimed part of the funds were distributed to opposition parties for “covert national security operations”.

In a memo addressed to the National Security Coordinator, the former spy chief claimed the huge sums in question were used for covert national security operations.

This, he said, included some GH₵8.3 million for “communications equipment” for an opposition party and nearly GH₵1 million in payments to legislators for passing key security laws.

Consequently, the former spy chief accused the Attorney General of launching a malicious prosecution against him.

However, CPP General Secretary Kwame Nkrumah Botsio dismissed the allegations in a fiery interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Friday:

“We did not receive any support [from the NPP]. We received support from well-wishers, and if we had received anything close to what is being bandied about, we would have won the election.”

Botsio highlighted the party’s financial constraints during the campaign: “As you can tell, we were so resource-strapped, we did not even have one TV advert, not one radio advert, and just had one billboard.”

He condemned the alleged misuse of state funds: “The allegations that are coming up are preposterous because these are taxpayers’ money. Whether in a rich country or a poor country, you don’t just dole out US$500,000 to an opposition party for whatever reason, especially as it falls outside of what you call security reasons.”

The General Secretary also detailed the party’s grassroots approach to election monitoring:

“We did the collation ourselves on my laptop, and our able regional chairmen did the collation themselves at the regional level and forwarded the results to us. We did not have any collation equipment at all except our laptops.”

The CPP’s denial comes as the high-profile corruption case continues to reveal explosive claims about alleged financial irregularities during the 2024 election period.

Meanwhile, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged Mr Adu-Boahene to disclose the specific opposition parties he gave the cash to procure election collation logistics and equipment because the umbrella party was not a beneficiary.

Speaking to JoyNews, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, dismissed the claims, saying, “On authority, I’m telling you the NDC has nothing to do with what came out of that story.

“Those people they’re referring to supported them during their recent demonstration. He knows his partners—that’s who he was referring to. And I’m sure everybody has seen that. My opponent would give me resources to defeat him in an election? Does that make sense?” he quizzed.

Dr Tanko further asserted that other political parties in opposition had not shown any real interest in unseating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and were often aligned with them.

“When we were in IPAC, anytime the NDC opposed the EC and NPP, those parties sided with the EC and NPP. The NDC has nothing to do with this. We fought hard, used our own resources, and dealt a heavy blow to the NPP.”

When asked whether the NDC might have received funds unknown to him, he dismissed the suggestion.

“I can speak on authority—it’s not possible at all. These guys are just clutching at straws. It won’t help them. They should go and negotiate a plea bargain; otherwise, he [Adu-Boahene] could be looking at 25 years.”

Dr Tanko added that the NDC fully supports the Attorney General’s efforts to prosecute the former NSB boss.

“The party has no business with whatever rubbish is coming out—we are not part of it.”

Police confirm return of two kidnapped victims rescued in Nigeria

0

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the safe return of Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anastasia Baidoo, the two women who were recently kidnapped in Nigeria through an online romance scam.

According to the Police, the victims were lured by unidentified individuals posing as romantic partners online, only to be abducted upon their arrival in Nigeria.

Their ordeal gained national attention after a distressing video of them in captivity went viral, sparking widespread public concern and outrage.

Following this, the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Signals Bureau (NSB) and the Nigerian Police Force, launched a coordinated cross-border rescue operation. Their efforts led to the successful recovery of the victims and the arrest of eight suspects believed to be connected to the crime.

The suspects were apprehended at various hideouts across both Ghana and Nigeria, with security agencies working in close cooperation to bring them to justice.

Upon their arrival in Ghana, the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, addressed the media at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Friday, May 9, where she urged the public to exercise caution when engaging with unfamiliar individuals online, especially in matters involving personal or financial trust.

This is pure blackmail; stop dragging everyone into your mess – Gbande fires Adu-Boahene

0

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has dismissed claims by former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, that over GH¢8 million was used in 2024 to procure election logistics and equipment for an opposition party.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Gbande described the allegations as a desperate attempt to avoid prosecution.

“This is pure blackmail and a calculated ploy to divert attention from the real issue. If you misappropriate public funds and the law catches up with you, the best a lawyer can advise is not to blackmail others to escape justice,” he said.

Adu-Boahene, who is facing prosecution for allegedly misappropriating GH¢49 million, reportedly claimed in a memo to the National Security Coordinator that the funds were used for covert national security operations, including logistics for an opposition party.

He also accused the Attorney General of pursuing a politically motivated case against him.

But Mr. Gbande rejected the insinuation, insisting that no such support came to the NDC.

“You can’t steal someone’s cassava and then claim you shared it with others when you’re caught. How does that clear you of the crime?” Mr. Gbande argued.

He added: “That blackmail tactic won’t work. If you’ve broken the law, face it. Don’t drag others into your mess.”

Although Adu-Boahene did not mention the NDC by name in the memo, the party has strongly denied benefiting from any alleged support.

Two Ghanaian women who were kidnapped in Nigeria under the pretense of marriage proposals have safely returned to Ghana.

Anastasia Baidoo Arthur and Evelyn Konadu arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Friday, May 9, 2025, aboard an Africa World Airlines flight from Abuja.

Their return was confirmed by the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, during a press briefing on Friday, May 9, 2025.

“I’m pleased to confirm that at 1:45 today, I received the victims at Kotoka International Airport. They were accompanied by an official of the Research Department of the Ghana High Commission who verified their identities,” DCOP Donkor said.

She noted that the victims were in stable condition and would undergo medical evaluation before providing statements to assist ongoing investigations.

“Both women are in stable condition and will receive the necessary medical attention. Following that, they will go through standard police procedures to provide their accounts to assist with ongoing investigations,” she said.

DCOP Donkor reiterated the police’s commitment to crime prevention and public safety, urging citizens to remain vigilant and cautious in online interactions.

“The Ghana Police Service remains steadfast in its core mandate of crime prevention, detection, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders. We are committed to ensuring that Ghana remains a safe and secure place for all,” she added.

The two women’s plight went viral after disturbing videos showing them being tortured were circulated on social media.

Their captors had demanded a ransom of GH¢500,000 each from their families.

The victims had separately traveled to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, on April 22, 2025. They were lured by a group of men posing as white foreigners seeking marriage partners.

The suspects, identified as Peter Okoye (31), Paulinus Chidokwe (35), Chinoso Okafor (35), and Christian Emeka, operated as part of a broader transnational romance scam syndicate targeting victims in both Ghana and Nigeria.

Upon arrival, the women were kidnapped, stripped, tied, and assaulted with machetes. They were threatened with death; their heads were covered with black polythene bags, and they were told they would be hanged with nylon ropes.

GH¢18,000 had already been transferred to the suspects before authorities intervened.

With support from Ghana’s National Signals Bureau and the Nigeria Police Force, eight suspects were arrested from different hideouts, and the victims were rescued.

High utilities, taxes threaten Ghana’s industrialisation agenda – GUTA

0

By Francis Ntow

Accra, May 9, GNA – High utilities and taxes could jeopardise the country’s economic stabilisation, government’s 24-hour economy initiative for jobs and industrialisation agenda, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has cautioned.

This comes on the back of a recent announcement of a 14.75 per cent increase in electricity tariff, effective May 3, 2025, and the Government’s indication of adding the COVID-19 levy to Value Added Tax (VAT) in a rationalisation exercise.

“Fortunately, the economic indicators are getting right,” Dr Joseph Obeng, the President of GUTA, said in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency, cautioning against actions that could derail the gains.

“We do not have to negate it with any unwanted costs of doing business, regarding utility tariff increment and high Value Added Tax (VAT). Because if care is not taken, we will shoot ourselves in the foot,” he said.

“The 14.75 per cent increase in electricity tariff is so huge and unjustified, given the improvement in economic indicators that were cited as reasons for previous increases,” Dr. Obeng said.

GUTA, the largest trading body has been pushing for a broad restructuring of the current VAT system to ensure uniformity, simplicity, affordability, leading to greater compliance and generating more revenue for the Government.

The current VAT system comprised a standard rate of 15 per cent, with an additional 2.5 per cent National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), 2.5 per cent Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Levy, and a one per cent COVID-19 Levy.

In essence, businesses under the standard VAT scheme incurred a rate of 21 per cent, while small businesses with an annual turnover below GHS500,000 paid three per cent VAT under the Flat Rate Scheme (VFRS).

To alleviate hardships and ease the high cost of doing business, the Government pledged to scrap some tax handles, including Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy), Emissions Levy and 10 per cent levy on bet winnings, and COVID-19 levy.

So far, the E-levy, Emissions Levy and the Betting Tax have all been scrapped, but President Mahama has indicated that the COVID-19 levy would be addressed in a VAT rationalisation exercise in September 2025.

Dr Obeng advocated that the Government took bold steps to halt further increases in utilities, VAT and port charges to create a safe space for enhanced local production at affordable prices.

He urged the Government to purge the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of inefficiencies and alleged corrupt practices, citing the missing containers of cables and other essential materials of the company as example.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has identified arrears by ECG to Independent Power Producers and other power sector players as a major concern in the implementation of the country’s US$3 billion loan-supported programme.

“Arrears are continuing to accumulate, which is a very significant challenge for Ghana, given the implications it can have for power supply,” said Stéphane Roudet, the IMF Mission Chief for Ghana.

He, however, noted that the Fund had seen a promising reform that could make ECG more efficient at collecting its bills and reducing the large commercial losses of the company.

He said this during a media roundtable at the April 2025 IMF/World Bank Group Spring meetings in Washington DC, USA, expressing confidence in the country’s economic stability.

In a high-level engagement aimed at fostering national cooperation for disability sports, President of the African Paralympic Committee (APC) and the Ghana Paralympic Committee, Mr. Samson Deen, paid a strategic courtesy call on the new Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The meeting, held at the NSA headquarters, set the tone for a new era of collaboration ahead of Ghana’s hosting of two major para sports events: the APC Elective Congress and the first-ever Open Para Sports and Classification Festival, both slated for November 2025.

Mr. Deen used the occasion to highlight the significance of Ghana’s role in advancing para sports across Africa. He underscored the dire need for inclusive facilities, athlete development, and continental access to athlete classification.

“Africa’s para athletes are talented but structurally underserved. With Ghana taking the lead in hosting a continental classification festival, we’re not just creating opportunities — we’re correcting historic inequalities,” he stated.

The upcoming festival is expected to be a game-changer, providing athletes with international classification, a prerequisite for competing in global Paralympic events. Mr. Deen revealed that international classifiers and delegations from several countries have already been engaged, with diplomatic missions like the Spanish Embassy expressing enthusiastic support.

Mr. Deen also shared personal insights into the transformation of para sports in Ghana since his involvement in 2016, noting the shift from a personality-driven system to one that embraces fairness and community empowerment.

“This movement is no longer about individuals. It’s about systems that work, structures that uplift everyone.”

He appealed to the NSA for access to key venues such as the Borteyman Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium, and for technical personnel to support the festival’s logistics.

In a show of solidarity, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah pledged the full support of his office.

“This is a national priority. We’re committed to seeing para sports thrive and will provide the facilities and manpower needed to ensure success.”

The collaboration between APC and the NSA is being hailed as a bold step in Ghana’s sports diplomacy and a significant milestone in empowering athletes with disabilities across Africa.

South Africa hits out at US Afrikaner refugee plan

Some Afrikaners have come out in public to back the US president and his refugee plan Some Afrikaners have come out in public to back the US president and his refugee plan

South Africa has criticised the US amid reports it could receive white Afrikaners as refugees as early as next week.

A document seen by the BBC’s US partner, CBS, describes the potential resettlement as a “priority” for President Donald Trump’s government, however, the timing has not been publicly confirmed by the White House.

In a statement published on Friday, South Africa’s foreign ministry described the purported move as “politically motivated” and designed to undermine South Africa’s “constitutional democracy”.

In February President Trump described Afrikaners as victims of “racial discrimination” in an executive order, opening up the prospect for them to resettle in the US.

The South African authorities said they would not block the departures of those chosen for resettlement, but that the government had sought assurances from its American counterpart that those selected had been fully vetted and did not have pending criminal charges.

South Africa reiterated that allegations of discrimination against the country’s white minority are unfounded, adding that crime statistics do not indicate that any racial group has been targeted in violent crimes on farms.

Some groups representing the rights of white farmers have said they are being deliberately killed because of their race.

A spokesperson for the US state department told the BBC they were interviewing individuals interested in resettling in the US, and prioritising “Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination”, but would not confirm when the resettlement would begin.

The Trump administration has also accused South Africa of seizing land from white farmers without compensation, something Pretoria has repeatedly denied.

Expectations are high, but I’m committed to Tema – Ebi Bright

0

The newly confirmed Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, has pledged her unwavering commitment to the entire municipality, acknowledging the significant responsibility of her new role amidst recent political tensions.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM shortly after her confirmation on Friday, May 9, Bright addressed public concerns and expectations surrounding her appointment.

She emphasised that although her political efforts had previously focused on Tema Central, her dedication has always extended across the broader Tema area.

“Over the years, it’s been difficult for me to decouple Tema Central from Tema in general,” she said. “But the only reason why it was possible was because it was important to situate the area politically—so we could be heard instead of being marginalised.”

A former parliamentary candidate, Bright clarified that her past focus on Tema Central was strategic, but her loyalty has consistently been to the entire city.

“My commitment has always been to Tema as a whole, of which Tema Central, of course, is a part,” she noted. “So I am very honoured, but I feel the weight of the challenge.”

Responding to the public scrutiny that surrounded her nomination and confirmation, Bright acknowledged the heightened expectations now resting on her leadership.

“With all the brouhaha surrounding my nomination and confirmation, I think there will be a lot of expectation from myself and the comrades I will be working with,” she said adding “We are very elated.”

Avoid the harassment of transit truck drivers-Professor Gyampo

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, May 09, GNA-Professor Ransford Gyampo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), has called on the leadership of the Ghana Police Service to continue the implementation of the 2024 directive against harassment of drivers on the transit corridor.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) in 2024 issued directives to the Ghana Police Service to cease harassing transit drivers, particularly those transporting goods between Tema and other major cities, to stop unprofessional conduct, extortion, and other malpractices that had been reported along transit corridors.

Professor Gyampo, in a speech read on his behalf by Mr. Prince Henry Ankrah, the deputy CEO in charge of operations, during a workshop for transit truck drivers, commended the police for the directive.

He said the directive significantly reduced the police harassment of transit truck drivers and delays along the country’s transit corridor.

“The Authority hopes that the directive will continue to be enforced to positively impact the haulage of transit,” he said.

He added that in line with the implementation of its memoranda of understanding with the three Sahelian landlocked countries, the GSA has since 2018 undertaken quarterly fact-finding missions along the major transit corridors in the country.

These exercises, he said, had unearthed serious infractions of Ghana’s Road Traffic Regulations, harassment of truck drivers, malpractices at Axle Load Stations, extortion, and deplorable road conditions, among others.

He said the findings of such trips were shared with relevant agencies to address the challenges identified and revealed that the outcome of the latest fact-finding trip undertaken in March 2025 on the Tema Hamile corridor recorded the 67 police stops made up of 46 permanent barriers and 21 temporary barriers.

He added that seven customs checkpoints between Nsutem and Hamile were recorded, while eight Immigration checkpoints, and six Axle Load stations were seen.

According to him, the authority had collaborated with the police administration to conduct sensitisation seminars for police officers along the corridors, adding that the seminars had contributed to improving the interface between police personnel and haulage truck drivers along the corridor.

‘Will you steal to feed us or what?’ – Solomon Owusu challenges Mahama over salary donation gesture

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has raised concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to donate six months of his salary to the Mahama Cares medical fund.

According to Owusu, the president’s primary source of income is his salary, and donating such a significant portion raises questions about how he intends to sustain himself and his family.

He further questioned whether Mahama plans to rely on other undisclosed sources of income, potentially from the state.

Owusu expressed his skepticism about the donation, arguing that while such gestures may appear commendable, they often conceal ulterior motives.

“The gesture by President Mahama, donating six months of his salary to the Mahama Cares medical fund, is something I don’t want to hear,” Owusu stated in an interview with Onua FM on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

“We are paying the president to work, so how will he feed himself? Is he going to steal from us? The last time we heard such a claim, it was said that Ken Ofori-Atta, a government appointee, did not receive a salary, yet he amassed wealth through his bank, Databank, by securing loans for the country,” he added.

Owusu further questioned the rationale behind Mahama’s donation, arguing that the government pays the president to work, not to give away his earnings.

“The government is paying you to work, so why are you giving away your salary? Your job is to be the president and nothing else, so where will you get money to feed yourself? The last time someone gave you a car, you said you had donated it to the state. If you don’t take bribes or have other sources of income, how will you survive?” he asked.

President John Dramani Mahama pledged six months of his salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as the Mahama Cares initiative, during the launch of the fund at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Announcing the donation, Mahama commended Ghanaians who had already contributed to the fund, emphasizing that, as its founder, he must also play his part in ensuring its success.

“Prof. Ayetey, a retired doctor, has donated $1,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust. That should encourage all of us, especially corporate institutions, to do even more. As the initiator of this laudable program, I must also contribute.

“And so, I’ve pledged six months of my salary to Mahama Cares. I haven’t started receiving a salary yet—they say the Accountant General is still processing it, but once that’s completed, six months of whatever I’m entitled to will go into Mahama Cares,” he stated.

CHALOG pushes for revenue privatisation amid KMA scandal

0

The Chamber of Local Governance (CHALOG) has advocated for the privatisation of revenue collection in Metropolitan Assemblies across the country.

This call follows a police investigation in the Ashanti Region involving four staff members from the Revenue Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

The officials are alleged to be part of a syndicate behind a fake ticketing scheme defrauding traders at the Kumasi Central Market.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One News on Friday, May 9, President of CHALOG, Dr. Richard Fiadomor, argued that entrusting revenue collection to the private sector would boost accountability and ensure more efficient use of funds for local development.

“Revenue collection should be privatised. When the private sector is collecting, they can’t keep it with them for 24 hours because the assembly can monitor. But if it is their staff from the government sector, the money can stay with them for more than 48 hours, leading to the unnecessary depletion of the money,” he said.

Dr. Fiadomor also accused the leadership of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of negligence, stating that they failed to enforce proper oversight of their internal revenue systems.

He emphasised that the KMA must be held accountable for gaps in its monitoring mechanisms.

“The other way they can go about, is by involving themselves in a serious monitoring, because the assembly has a hierarchy. There is a Chief Executive, Coordinating Director, Finance Officers, and these revenue operators operate under the Finance Officers.

“For me, the reason why there is difficulty in monitoring them is because some of the Finance Officers are complicit in the matter.”

‘CJ Torkornoo is not coming back, it is a foregone conclusion’

0

Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato and Gertrude Torkornoo Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato and Gertrude Torkornoo

Policy analyst and Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has asserted that the exit of the suspended Chief Justice, Getrude Torkornoo, is inevitable, describing it as a foregone conclusion.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, May 9, 2025, Dr Zaato stated emphatically that there is no chance of her returning to office.

“It’s a forgone conclusion, it’s done; the Chief Justice is gone. There will be a new Chief Justice. Let me say by the end of the year, watching everything going on, this Chief Justice is gone – she’s out.

“She’s not going back to the office. Maybe she’s going just to pack her things if she didn’t pack all of them, but as the Chief Justice she is done; it’s finished,” he stated.

He alleged that some people in the NDC had been able to convince President Mahama to remove the Chief Justice.

“I am a political scientist, so, I observe, I watch, I analyse, I see these things. Every political party has what we call hawks and maybe doves and then you have those in the middle. The hawks want everything extreme.

“The doves are in the middle, I want to believe that in this debate on these particular issues, the hawks within the NDC and the government have won, and they’ve been able to convince the president. They’ve won because I don’t think that His Excellency the president will want a removal of a Chief Justice to be part of his record,” he stated.

He further explained that the suspension of the Chief Justice points to a deliberate measure to achieve a political agenda.

“Everything here; everything we are trying to see about going to court… that is politics in action right there (sic) because you are seeing the weaponisation of the legal process to achieve a political objective; that is what is happening,” he added.

Following the determination of a prima facie case in the three petitions asking for the removal from office of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended her and set up a five-member committee to inquire into the petitions.

In the interim, a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has assumed the role as Acting Chief Justice.

His role as the Acting Chief Justice is in line with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that the most senior Justice on the Supreme Court will act as Chief Justice if the position of Chief Justice becomes vacant or the substantive Chief Justice is unable to perform his or her functions.

The US Embassy issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaians in 2024 The US Embassy issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaians in 2024

The United States Embassy in Ghana issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaian nationals in 2024, out of a total of 61,000 applications, according to Consular General Elliot Fertik.

Speaking at a Consular Media Day held on May 9, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb, Fertik stressed the Embassy’s commitment to transparency, lawful travel, and improved service for visa applicants.

The event aimed to clarify the US visa process and address common misconceptions.

“Last year, the US Embassy issued up to 25,000 visas to Ghanaians, to come and work, study and visit the United States.

“We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana who are interested in studying, investing, or doing business in the US. But with entry to the US, visa applicants or holders must follow our laws,” he said.

Fertik also issued a firm warning against illegal immigration, emphasising that the US has a zero-tolerance policy.

“Those who break the rules will face the law, including visa refusals or outright bans from entering the US,” he added.

The US Embassy further urged Ghanaians to avoid fraudulent agents and follow the official application process since such actions could lead to visa refusals, revocations, or deportation.
