Swiss football manager Nora Hauptle has left the country after her contract as head coach of the Black Queens expired.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the appointment of the Swiss as the manager of the Ghana women’s national team, replacing Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo who had been in charge since 2019.
However, Hauptle has left her role after deciding not to renew her contract with the GFA, which expired on December 31, 2024.
During her tenure, Hauptle qualified the Black Queens for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament which is scheduled to be hosted in Morocco later this year.
However, she lost out on qualifying the Queens for the Olympic Games after losing to Zambia’s Cooper Queens.
As earlier reported by Ghanasoccernet.com, Nora Hauptle is expected to be appointed as the head coach for Zambia’s Cooper Queens. She is expected to sign a two-year deal with a monthly salary of $7,000.
Her appointment was approved by the Executive Committee of the Zambia FA on 21 December.
Meanwhile, the Ghana FA is looking for a replacement for Nora Hauptle for the 2025 WAFCON.
Freddie Blay, the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described the party’s loss in the 2024 elections as unexpected, especially given the economic progress achieved under the Akufo-Addo-led administration as reported by Ghana Web on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

He acknowledged the tough economic climate inherited by the Akufo-Addo government and stated their efforts to rebuild the economy.
“We faced significant hurdles, but we made remarkable progress. We truly believed the results would favor us,” Blay stated.

Accra, Jan.03, GNA – A 12-member Election Review Committee has been constituted by the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to review its performance in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The Committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, has three months to work and make appropriate recommendations to enable the Party to bounce back stronger in future elections.
This was in a statement issued by Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General-Secretary of the Party in Accra.
The Committee is expected to engage all party stakeholders and the public and submit a comprehensive report to the Council within three months.
The report would set the stage for the Party’s reflection, rebuilding, and restructuring efforts to bounce back stronger in future elections, the statement said.
It implored all stakeholders, particularly party executives, and the members of the Party to cooperate with the Review Committee to ensure a success.
Other members of the Committee were Prof. Yaa Nitamoah-Baidu, Prof. Kofi Osei Akuoko, Prof. Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi, Dr Felix Yamoah, and Dr Joseph Agyapong Darmoe.
The rest were Dr F. F Anto, Mr Kwaku Domfe, Madam Gifty Kusi, Abdulai Abanga, Seidu Nasigri and Mr William Yamoah.
The NPP lost the 2024 presidential elections, with its flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polling 41 per cent as against its main contender Mr John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, who garnered 56 per cent of the total votes cast.
In the parliamentary elections, the opposition NDC has, so far, swept more than 180 seats in Parliament with the ruling NPP winning less than 90 seats.
Samuel Obeng, the Executive Director of the Parliamentary Network for Africa, has praised the selection of Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the Minority Leader for the 9th Parliament, calling it a positive signal for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it moves forward.
This follows the decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP to appoint the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, as the Minority Leader.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Obeng underscored the importance of having a seasoned and capable leader at the head of the minority caucus.
He emphasized that Afenyo-Markin’s extensive experience, particularly during his time in the opposition, has equipped him with the skills needed to provide effective oversight and offer constructive alternatives to the government.
“It is a wise decision by the party…you may have to put your best foot forward. Experience counts. This is not the time for experimenting.
“So, they decided to opt for the people who have been doing this work already. As a majority or a minority leader, you have to be firm on the parliamentary select committee and other committees.
“Also, the selection of people who are supposed to serve on the various committees. So, the experience that comes with having served on these teams over the last couple of months helps to make sure that they will hit the ground running right from the beginning,” he stated.

The ICC tribunal ruled that Tullow Ghana, a subsidiary of Tullow Oil, is not liable for the $320 million BPRT assessment that had been issued by the GRA.
The tribunal determined that BPRT does not apply to Tullow’s operations in Ghana, as it falls outside the tax framework stipulated in the Petroleum Agreements between Tullow and the government.
This ruling effectively eliminates any financial obligation tied to the disputed tax, securing Tullow Ghana from future BPRT claims related to its operations in the region.
“Tullow continues to engage with the Government of Ghana on two further disputed tax claims, which were referred to the ICC in February 2023, with the aim of resolving these disputes on a mutually acceptable basis,” the company said in a statement.

Ghana’s parliament has approved a provisional budget worth 68.1 billion Ghanaian cedis, preventing a government shutdown. This decision comes as John Dramani Mahama is set to assume the presidency. The budget passage coincides with critical issues including an energy sector crisis and ongoing debt challenges.
In a pivotal session that stretched into late Thursday, Ghana’s parliament passed a provisional budget, thereby allowing the government to function without disruption.
A Former Prime Minister of Mali Choguel Maïga has been accused of embezzlement by the body that is responsible for controlling public spending.
A report by the authority points to numerous instances of embezzlement, involving significant sums of money. The former leader is said to have covered up some of the incidents or benefitted from them.
According to the auditor, there was ‘’undue expenditure on staff’’ over the entire 2020-2023 period. This includes phone subscriptions amounting to nearly €20,000, and equipment such as WiFi and computers that were meant for use in schools.
Maiga served as Prime Minister from June 2021 until November 2024, when he was dismissed by junta chief Col Assimi Goïta. The move came after criticism by Maïga of the junta’s lack of clearness about a once-promised transition back to democracy.
He has so far refused to comment on the embezzlement allegations.
Maiga has previously commented on the report when the auditor began its research, insisting that he had a ‘clear conscience’.
Accra, Jan 03, GNA – The Committee for Public Accountability (CPA), has condemned the alleged biased actions of Mr Raymond Archer and his team, particularly against Mr Daniel McKorley and other business leaders.
The CPA emphasised the importance of professionalism and fairness, cautioning against using the Oral Team to settle personal scores.
At a Press Conference in Accra, Mr Collins Amankwa, the Leader and Executive Chairperson of CPA, also addressed the alleged recent claim by the Ghana Airport Company (GACL) that McDan Aviation Company owed the Company $3 million.
“…Evidence suggests that this claim is exaggerated, with the actual amount due being around $600,000,” he said.
The CPA therefore questioned the motives behind GACL’s actions, wondering why the Company would want to undermine a successful Ghanaian business.
“This move has resulted in the shutdown of the private terminal, which is crucial for upcoming events, including the president-elect’s inauguration,” Mr Amankwa said.
According to the CPA, McDan Aviation, had allegedly made significant payments in the past and had plans to resume further payments in January 2025 adding that “The company also refuted claims that it owes GACL $3 million for the terminal, describing such reports as erroneous,” he said.
Mr Amankwa told the Press that CPA was ready to defend the interests of Ghanaian citizens, especially the business community, and would take legal action if necessary.
He also emphasised the state’s responsibility to support and protect businesses, allowing them to thrive for the collective benefit of society.
The management of GACL has shut down the McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal due to an alleged outstanding debt of over $3 million.
The debt, which included land leases, rentals, and terminal charges accumulated over a period, was allegedly not cleared despite being given until Christmas to settle the amount.
This marks the second time McDan Aviation has faced such a shutdown.
In February 2022, GACL indefinitely barred McDan Aviation from operating its private jet services at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) following operational breaches.
This move came after McDan launched its private jet services at the airport despite not meeting the required terms and conditions set by the airport authorities.

The Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has called for legislative action to prevent “non-performing” politicians from receiving ex-gratia payments after leaving office.
After reports surfaced regarding such payments to outgoing government officials, Franklin Cudjoe expressed his concerns over the payment of emoluments to politicians, particularly those classified under Article 71 of the Constitution.
He criticised the poor performance of some of these officials, arguing that they had overseen reckless borrowing that pushed the country into massive debt and worsened the economic situation.
In a post on X on January 2, 2025, Franklin Cudjoe highlighted the loss of the ruling government in the recent general elections as a key indicator of their underperformance.
He also lamented the state of the economy and the impact on ordinary Ghanaians.
“So, Parliament is discussing ex-gratia for Article 71 holders behind closed doors? They had better remind themselves that almost all the recipients performed abysmall, recklessly borrowed us into a debt iceberg, junked our economy, and pushed nearly a million Ghanaians into shackling penury and deep poverty. He further stated that a law be passed to prohibit politicians who have performed poorly from receiving ex-gratia payments, arguing that their performance does not justify such emoluments.
“We must pass a law that bans politicians who fail from getting such emoluments. Alas, everyone lives at the expense of the state. Hope John Dramani Mahama keeps his word that he will cancel ex-gratia!” he added.
Franklin Cudjoe’s comments come in the wake of reports about closed-door discussions in Parliament regarding ex-gratia payments for Article 71 officeholders.

John Dramani Mahama is set to take office as the West African country’s president next week after winning a Dec. 7 election, staging a political comeback after serving as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2016.
Outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo was due to present his last state of the nation address later on Friday after eight years leading the gold- and oil-exporting nation.
A provisional budget is typically passed in November during election years to cover the gap until the president-elect takes office.
But the presentation of the provisional budget had dragged this time after an impasse over whether the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has a majority of seats in the House.
Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam told the joint business and finance committees the late passage of the provisional budget would not affect government business.
“It averts a government shutdown and (the) likelihood of worsening Ghana’s ongoing debt default saga,” Seth Terkper, a former finance minister, told Reuters.
Almost a third of the approved amount is earmarked for payments to energy-sector service providers, according to the provisional budget.
Mahama, the president-elect, said last month that Ghana was going to face a critical situation in the energy sector, adding that preliminary estimates showed that arrears exceeded $2.5 billion at a time when the power supply was erratic.

Ernest Kumi has been announced as the Member of Parliament (MP)-elect for the Akwatia constituency
The Koforidua High Court has issued an injunction preventing Ernest Kumi from being sworn in as the Member of Parliament (MP)-elect for the Akwatia constituency, as reported by citinewsroom.com.
This ruling comes in response to a lawsuit filed by Henry Boakye Yiadom, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, against the Electoral Commission (EC), Ernest Kumi, and the Clerk of Parliament.
Yiadom’s legal action seeks to delay Ernest Kumi’s swearing-in until the case is resolved.
The Akwatia constituency was among the contested seats in the 2024 general election, with the results re-collated and declared by the EC at the National Police Training School in Tesano.
Following the final collation, the EC declared Ernest Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner with 19,269 votes, while Henry Boakye-Yiadom received 17,206 votes.
After reviewing the case, the court granted the injunction, halting Kumi’s assumption of the role of MP-elect for Akwatia until further notice.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formed an 11-member committee to probe its loss in the 2024 general elections.
Chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, the committee is tasked with analyzing the factors behind the party’s defeat and proposing solutions to strengthen its future prospects, as reported by Citi Newsroom.
According to NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the committee has been given a three-month mandate to review internal party elections, evaluate campaign strategies, and identify key challenges that contributed to the loss.
The findings will be presented to the party’s National Council for consideration and action.
The 2024 elections marked a significant political shift, with former President John Dramani Mahama reclaiming the presidency after securing a decisive victory over the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on December 9 that Mahama garnered 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast. In contrast, Bawumia received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
Mahama’s victory was accompanied by substantial gains for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which secured a majority in Parliament.
Over 180 parliamentary seats have been confirmed for the NDC, including constituencies that were previously strongholds of the NPP.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has successfully disbursed GH¢270 million to healthcare providers nationwide to cover claims submitted and vetted up to October 2024 and part of November 2024.
In a statement signed on January 3, Dr Da-Costa Aboagye, Chief Executive of NHIA, said the payments are within the agreed-upon three-month reimbursement period and currently has no outstanding vetted claims to pay.
“This latest payment brings the total amount released by the NHIA over the past four months to over GH¢1.2 billion, reinforcing the Authority’s ongoing commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the sustainability of the NHIS.”
Dr Da-Costa Aboagye urged NHIA healthcare facilities to submit their claims promptly, as claims should not cover a period exceeding 90 days.
In addition to this current payment, the NHIA has also made significant disbursements in recent months. On December 1, 2024, the NHIA released GH¢200 million for claims covering September and part of October 2024, following an earlier disbursement of over GH¢335 million on October 9, 2024, for claims related to August 2024.
In September 2024, the NHIA began disbursing GH¢402 million to health facilities to cover claims for June and July 2024. These payments demonstrate the Authority’s dedication to fulfilling its financial obligations to healthcare providers and strengthening the healthcare sector for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

In accordance with FIFA regulations, it is mandatory for each Member Association (MA) to propose new referees or renew the appointments of existing ones on the FIFA list annually. The selection process involves rigorous requirements, including successful completion of FIFA-approved fitness and medical tests.
The Referees Committee of the Association oversees the nomination process, ensuring that all candidates meet FIFA’s eligibility criteria. Once the nominations are finalized, the list is submitted to the Executive Council for approval before being forwarded to FIFA for final validation. FIFA retains the authority to reject any nominee who fails to meet the stipulated standards.
Approved referees earn their FIFA badges for the calendar year, from January to December.

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the shutdown of the Bonsa Headworks, which supplies 75% of potable water to the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality in the Western Region.
This decision, according to GWL, is due to the severe impact of illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” on the Bonsa River, rendering it impossible to extract and treat water for distribution.
In a statement dated January 2, 2025, and signed by Wisdom Doe Akoto, the Tarkwa District Manager of GWL, the company noted that all efforts to curb the pollution caused by galamsey activities have proven unsuccessful, leaving no choice but to suspend operations at the facility.
GWL expressed concern over the persistent pollution and called on stakeholders, including local authorities and security agencies, to take decisive action to address the issue and restore the river’s quality.
“We have tried all that we could but to no avail, hence the shutdown. The river is still being monitored for acceptable parameters to enable us to restart production, and until then, the plant remains closed.
“We promise to update the public on any development with regard to the current situation,” he said.
This closure is expected to affect water supply to residents and industries in the municipality, further highlighting the devastating impact of illegal mining on essential resources.
The Bonsa Headworks Plant Manager, Paul Bawa, speaking to Citi News on the shutdown said the situation was necessary as the plant 1982 installed capacity of 1 million gallons per day had been reduced to just about 400,000 gallons per day due to the raw water pollution by “galamsey”.
“The installation capacity is 1 million gallons which is about 5,400 cubic metres but because of the problems over the years from when it was commissioned in 1982, the raw water quality deteriorated and now we are doing three thousand cubic metres which is far below what be doing and the activities have intensified so much that the water is just mud.
“The pumps cannot lift that much for us to pump, then we have to shut down. As at the shutdown we were doing between 1,800 to 2,000 cubic metres and finally, the thing cannot pump so we have to shut down,” he said.

Recent rumors on social media that Ghana’s betting tax has been repealed are untrue. This deceptive remark comes after John Mahama was declared President-Elect, despite the fact that he has yet to be inaugurated into office.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) began withholding 10% of all gambling platform wins in August 2023, following the adoption of the Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1094). The levy was implemented as part of a package of measures aimed at increasing gaming sector revenue.
While both leading presidential candidates, John Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, promised to abolish the betting tax throughout their campaigns, this pledge has yet to be accomplished. According to Article 174 of the 1992 Constitution, taxes can only be levied, altered, or repealed by an Act of Parliament. No notification has been made to Parliament regarding the abolition of the betting tax.
The Ghana Revenue Authority has likewise not published a statement announcing the removal of the tax. Thus, statements that President-Elect Mahama has eliminated the betting tax are false and deceptive.
Ghanaians are reminded to rely on verifiable information from trustworthy sources to avoid falling victim to fake news. The public is also reminded that policy changes, such as tax cuts, must go through legal channels and be approved by parliament.

The Bonsa Headworks, which provides 75% of the Western Region’s Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality with drinkable water, is closing, according to a statement from Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
According to GWL, this decision was made because of the detrimental effects of illicit mining operations, often known as “galamsey,” on the Bonsa River, which make it hard to extract and purify water for distribution.
In a January 2, 2025, statement signed by GWL’s Tarkwa District Manager, Wisdom Doe Akoto, the business stated that it had no alternative but to halt operations at the facility because all attempts to reduce the pollution brought on by galamsey activities had failed.
Concerned about the ongoing contamination, GWL urged all parties involved—including local government and security organizations—to move swiftly to resolve the problem and improve the quality of the river.
“The shutdown was necessary because we tried everything we could, but to no effect. The plant stays closed until the river is monitored for suitable criteria that will allow us to resume production.
He declared, “We pledge to keep the public informed of any developments pertaining to the current situation.”

Despite CHASS’s plea to postpone the reopening, the Ghana Education Service (GES) claims the Senior High School reopening date has not changed.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) recently cautioned that the reopening process would be hampered if the financial difficulties affecting the second-cycle schools are not resolved by January 3, 2025.
In a statement released just days ago, it went on to strongly caution against the reopening of schools.
Nonetheless, nothing has changed, according to a statement released by the Ghana Education Service (GES) on Thursday, January 2, one day prior to the reopening date. According to the statement, the academic calendar for 2024–2025 will go on as planned.

A devastating incident occurred at the Tonyx Hotel in Koforidua on Sunday, leaving a family in grief and a community in shock. Nine-year-old Yaa Serwaa, a pupil of Trinity Presbyterian Basic School, lost her life in a tragic drowning incident at the hotel’s pool.
According to eyewitnesses, Yaa Serwaa had accompanied her father and five siblings to the hotel for a fun-filled day.
While her siblings and other children were swimming in the pool, Yaa Serwaa opted to sit by the poolside and take pictures.
However, in a shocking turn of events, she was later found drowning in the pool, unnoticed by her siblings and other swimmers.
The father, who was responsible for the children’s supervision, reportedly searched for Yaa Serwaa everywhere before being alerted to her presence in the pool.
She was retrieved and rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has raised questions about the safety measures in place at the hotel’s pool and the level of supervision provided by the live guards.
The mother of the deceased, in an interview, revealed that Yaa Serwaa had celebrated her 9th birthday just a month ago, on December 1, 2024.
The police in Koforidua have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Yaa Serwaa’s death, and the hotel management is cooperating with the authorities.
GE Aerospace, whose joint venture made the engines of the Boeing aeroplane that crashed in the deadliest aviation disaster on South Korean soil, joined the investigation as Seoul extended by a week special inspections of all 101 Boeing 737-800 jets.
The transport ministry extended to Jan. 10 its inspections following the crash of a Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air that killed 179 people, Joo Jong-wan, the deputy transport minister for civil aviation, told a press briefing.
“Investigators are in the process of probing the cause of the accident by piecing together a puzzle,” Joo added.
The inspections had initially been set to wrap up on Friday, but another ministry official said further checks would look into matters such as whether airlines spent sufficient time on maintenance and secured parts for repairs. Video images on social media appear to show smoke emerging from the plane’s right engine in the lead-up to the crash.
Sunday’s flight from Bangkok to the southwestern county of Muan belly-landed and overshot the runway at the regional airport, exploding into flames after hitting an embankment. The ministry has said it would examine engines, maintenance records and landing gear on all 737-800s, with serious violations leading to suspension of an airline’s operations.
The plane’s engines are produced by GE Aerospace’s CFM International joint venture with Safran. A media representative for GE Aerospace did not immediately respond to Reuters’ emailed question about the investigation.
The addition of a GE representative takes to 23 the size of the investigation team, including 12 Korean investigators and U.S. representatives from Boeing and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
While the cause of the disaster is still unclear, the crash could add to headaches faced by Boeing as the planemaker battles to restore the trust of customers following two fatal 737 MAX crashes, a mid-air panel blowout, and a seven-week strike.
Unanswered questions include why the aircraft did not deploy its landing gear and what led the pilot to rush into a second attempt at landing after telling air traffic control the plane had suffered a bird strike and declaring an emergency.
South Korea’s investigation team said two of its members would leave for the United States with the flight data recorder recovered on Monday to analyse the critical data with the NTSB. Joo expected investigators to finish transcribing the cockpit voice recording from the doomed aircraft in the next several days, making a decision later on the disclosure of the transcript.
The ministry also held an emergency meeting with the chief executives of 11 airlines, including top-ranked Korean Air Lines and Asiana Airlines, to discuss ways to beef up aviation safety.
South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok urged investigators on Friday to work swiftly to collect evidence from the crash scene and analyse data from the cockpit voice recorder.
On Thursday, police said they were searching Jeju Air and the operator of Muan International Airport. They banned the airline’s chief executive, Kim E-bae, and an unidentified official from leaving the country. Investigators also plan a special inspection of the location and materials of the airport landing system at airports elsewhere in South Korea by Jan. 8, 2025.
Safety experts said the embankment, designed to prop up the navigation system that helps pilots make safe descents, was too rigid and too close to the end of the runway. Investigators will analyse data on 107 mobile phones recovered from the crash site, including text messages, for clues to what happened before the crash, Yonhap News said.
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has categorically rejected assertions that associate the independence of the Central Bank with the government’s Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
He emphasized that the debt exchange initiative was a direct reaction to a significant national crisis and did not impact the autonomy of the Bank of Ghana.
“The debt exchange programme has nothing to do with the independence of the central bank,” Dr Addison said during an interview with Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition.
He characterized the DDEP as a significant national emergency that necessitated an immediate resolution to prevent the nation from facing economic collapse.
“It was a life-and-death matter for all Ghanaians. At that point, nothing else mattered. Salaries were not going to be paid. There was going to be chaos because nobody was getting their investment returns.”
Dr. Addison clarified that the Bank of Ghana’s participation in the debt exchange programme was not a reaction to economic shocks but a strategic response.
He further detailed the sequence of events, indicating that the International Monetary Fund’s recommended approach included the declaration of a debt standstill, which was subsequently succeeded by a debt exchange.
“The IMF’s approach to the crisis was clear. The Bank of Ghana had to continue financing the government to maintain stability while we worked on the programme.
“At that point, those holding government instruments were the ones impacted. What happened in October during the debt standstill could have happened much earlier in the year, but it would have been disorderly without the appropriate policies in place. This was the solution given the situation the country found itself in.”
Dr. Addison also dismissed the notion that the independence of the central bank was undermined during the crisis, emphasizing that its measures were consistent with the IMF’s framework aimed at restoring stability.
“The recent economic challenges were about survival. Let’s not oversimplify the situation.”

Over 100 shops have reportedly been burnt to ashes, leaving many traders devastated and reeling in pain over the loss of their capital and goods.
A male trader, whose name has yet to be confirmed, said many lives and businesses have been lost due to last Thursday dawn’s inferno.
The middle-aged man pleaded with Ghanaian businessmen and the wealthy in society, particularly Osei Kwame Despite, to come to the aid of the traders, many of whom are women.
“What has happened to us is devastating and so I want to appeal to the wealthy people in Ghana, especially Dr Osei Kwame Despite to come to our aid,” he said.
Speaking in a video sighted by YEN.com.gh on social media, the male trader blamed the Ghana National Fire Service for the spread of the fire.
“If the fire service claims that they did a good job, I’m telling you on authority that they did not do anything. As at 2 AM when I was here, their cars were packed. No fire service person was fighting the fire from all angles of the market,” he alleged.
Osei Kwame Despite’s philanthropist work
Osei Kwame Despite is one of the richest men in Ghana, with many businesses to his name.
The Ghanaian business mogul is widely known for his charitable endeavours, helping the poor and needy, especially widows, in Ghana.
It, therefore, stands to reason why the Katamanto market victim would appeal to him for help.
He is also a prominent member of the East Legon Executive Club, a group comprising some of Ghana’s richest men.

Bishop J.Y. Adu’s prophecy on Katamanto
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the Katamanto fire outbreak confirmed a prophecy by Bishop J.Y. Adu.
The man of God reportedly predicted that the Katamanto market in Accra would be ravaged by fire in 2025 during his December 31, 2024 crossover service.
Following the unfortunate incident, the video of the prophet’s prophecy has resurfaced on social media.
The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a tiler to 22 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling and impregnating a 12-year-old girl.
Stephen Otu, 32, popularly known as Atta, pleaded guilty to the charge raised against him and begged the court to have mercy on him.
However, the court presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, found Otu guilty and sentenced him accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts.
Chief Inspector of Police Abraham Ayitey, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, a 38-year-old Pragia rider, was the father of the victim who was in primary six.
He said the complainant, victim and the convict resided in the same area at Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.
According to the prosecution, about two months ago, the convict met the victim in Wassa Akropong township and asked for her age, and the victim told him she was 12 years old.
Chief Inspector Ayitey said in the process, the convict lured the victim into his room, assaulted her sexually, and gave her GH¢20.00 after the act, and warned her not to inform her parents.
The court heard that Otu took advantage of the victim and on three different occasions he had sexual intercourse with the victim.
The prosecution said on November 24, 2024, at about 1700 hours, the victim’s mother noticed she was pregnant, and asked the victim who was responsible, and she mentioned Otu as the one who had been having sex with her.
He said a report was made to the police and the complainant was given a police medical form to take the victim to the hospital for treatment.
Chief Inspector Ayitey said the medical form submitted to the police after the victim had been examined proved that she was two months pregnant.
He said Otu was arrested and detained to assist investigations.

Ghana’s informal economy has suffered an enormous blow after a fire engulfed the Kantamanto used clothes market in the capital on Thursday, destroying more than 100 shops and goods worth millions of the local cedi currency. Thousands of traders have lost their livelihoods.
The fire swept through the bustling Kantamanto Market early on Thursday morning, reducing much of it to ashes.
Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) deployed 13 fire tenders to bring the flames under control.
Goods worth millions of the local cedi currency have been destroyed, the GNFS said.
“This is devastating,” said Alex King Nartey, a GNFS spokesperson. “We’ve not recorded severe casualties, but the economic loss is enormous.”
“Preliminary investigations suggest faulty electrical connections might have sparked the blaze, although we are not ruling out arson,” Nartey told France’s AFP news agency.
Little remains of the more than 2,000 shops in the open-air market – a hub of Ghana’s informal economy.
People were flocking, many in tears, to assess the damage, RFI correspondent Victor Cariou reported.
In the middle of the ruins, a large crowd of young scrap metal dealers were trying, on Thursday, to salvage anything they could to try and sell it on.

‘I feel empty’
Around 10,000 people depend on the market to earn a living, local business associations estimate. Hundreds of traders, many specialising in the resale of used clothes, now face an uncertain future.
Isaac Ofori lost both his shops in the fire, along with all his merchandise. “My shops burned, I feel empty, he told RFI, estimating the value of his losses at more than 10 times his annual income.
Like many traders, Ofori is calling on the government for help.
Koffi Poku, who also lost all his stock in the blaze says it will be impossible to face this crisis alone.
“I have no idea where I can find the money to launch another business, so the government has to help and support us. Everything’s been spoiled,” he told RFI.

Call for emergency funding
Richard Amo Yartey, an official with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said they were investigating the cause of the incident in collaboration with other agencies.
“The scale of destruction is heart-wrenching, but we are committed to identifying the root cause and providing immediate relief to affected traders,” he said.
The president of the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG), David Kwadwo Amoateng, urged the government to act swiftly, adding that the “market is a vital part of our economy”.
“The traders here need emergency funding to get back on their feet. Without immediate intervention, thousands of livelihoods are at risk,” he said.
Kantamanto Market, which is home to over 30,000 traders, has been a lifeline for many in Accra’s Central Business District.
The government is yet to announce a formal response to the tragedy.
About 15 million items of second-hand clothing arrive in Ghana each week, mainly from Europe. However, nearly half cannot be resold.
