A suspect has been apprehended in connection with the tragic murder of Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Her lifeless body was discovered near the university’s Disability and Rehabilitation Centre at approximately 5:00 a.m. on February 27, 2025.
Following thorough investigations, the police identified 21-year-old Daniel Tuffuor, also a final-year student at KNUST, as the primary suspect. Surveillance footage from the university’s CCTV system provided critical evidence, capturing Tuffuor in distinct attire at the crime scene. Upon further inquiry, law enforcement recovered the same clothing in his possession, strengthening the case against him.
In response to this shocking incident, KNUST has intensified security measures to enhance campus safety. The administration has deployed over 50 security personnel, including mobile patrol units from the Anti-Robbery Squad and SWAT officers, to boost surveillance. Currently, CCTV cameras cover about 80% of the university, but plans are underway to achieve full coverage in the coming weeks.
Additionally, the university has issued precautionary measures to students, urging them to prioritize safety. They have been advised to move in pairs after dark, steer clear of secluded areas, minimize carrying valuables, and promptly report any suspicious activities to security officials.
Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the matter to ensure justice for Yabani and her grieving family. Authorities remain committed to bringing those responsible to account while reinforcing safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Jennifer Queen, Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party
Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jennifer Queen, has expressed gratitude to former President Akufo-Addo for not giving her any appointment.
According to the outspoken politician, she would have, by now, been harassed, persecuted, and arrested by the Mahama-led government on flimsy charges, just as has been done to some members of the NPP.
Speaking on Angel FM, as monitored by GhanaWeb, Jennifer Queen, known for her vociferousness, stated that not serving on any institution’s board during President Akufo-Addo’s government has given her peace of mind.
“Do you not think that if former President Akufo-Addo had appointed me to the board of an institution with no significant financial rewards, by this time, the Mahama government would have caused my arrest long ago? Sometimes, it is good not to have any political appointment. They would have arrested me in Rambo-style and dragged me all the way to the NIB offices. I swear to God on this issue. So, former President Akufo-Addo, I greet you this morning, and I am grateful to you for not appointing me as a board member of any institution.”
Some leading members of the NPP have, in the past week, either been arrested or invited by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to answer questions related to corruption.
The former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, was detained by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over his alleged role in the botched $3 billion Accra Sky Train project.
He was picked up on the morning of Sunday, February 23, 2025, for allegedly authorizing the release of $2 million to Africa Investor Holdings, the company behind the project.
Reports suggest that the payment was made before feasibility studies were conducted and that the funds have yet to be refunded to the state.
Former Minister of Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, was also invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for questioning regarding the Ghana Sky Train project.
The project was initiated in 2018 by the previous administration as a major infrastructure initiative to tackle traffic congestion, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.
Under the leadership of Joe Ghartey, Ghana signed a concession agreement with the Africa Investment (Ai) Sky Train Consortium in 2019, with an estimated cost of $3 billion.
However, the project never took off, raising concerns about its feasibility and financing.
In 2022, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), a state entity, disclosed that it had invested $2 million in the project but had yet to see any returns.
The Auditor-General’s report also flagged this expenditure, sparking public debate.

A Toyota Sentra with registration number BT 565-22 has been completely burnt at Soalepe in the West Gonja Municipality along the Fulfulso-Damongo Highway in the Savannah Region.
The vehicle, carrying the driver and seven passengers, was travelling from Tamale to Damongo when the incident occurred. Reports say all occupants escaped unhurt.
Speaking to Channel One News, Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) and Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Emmanuel Ofori Adjei, confirmed receiving a distress call from Soalepe about the fire on Friday, February 28. He stated that firefighters arrived at the scene within four minutes, but the car was already in a severely damaged state upon their arrival.
“Our team arrived within four minutes and managed to put out the fire, but by the time we got there, the vehicle was completely burned,” Adjei stated. Recounting the incident, the driver said that “as he approached Soalepe, he suddenly heard an explosion and immediately pulled over. Realizing the danger, he rushed to open the doors for passengers and helped unload goods from the vehicle.
“Meanwhile, he did not have a fire extinguisher and was unaware of the fire service emergency number, making it impossible for him to call for help. A fellow driver travelling behind him witnessed the fire and quickly reported the incident,” the DCFO said.
According to him, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Controversial Ghanaian media personality, Kevin Taylor, has vowed to destroy the NPP party within two years and make them irrelevant in Ghanaian politics going forward.
Speaking during a recent episode of his show, Taylor said by the time he’s done with the NPP, they will not get even 25% of the share of the vote in 2028 elections.
Taylor vowed that if NPP are able to cross the 25% threshold he will dismantle the entire Loud Silence Media network that he’s spend over a decade building.
Kevin said the reason they NPP needs to be destroyed is because they are a ‘demonic’ party who does not have the best interests of Ghanaians at heart. Taylor said the party needs to be broken down and rebuilt or replaced with a better alternative.

The number of robbery cases recorded in 2024 within the operational zone of Western Region was thirteen (13) according to statistics from the Ghana Police Service (GPS)
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, (DCOP) Mr. Osei Akoto, the Western Regional Police Command is therefore committed to change the narrative in terms of prevention and management of crime within the jurisdiction.
This is because, Ghana Police Service, according to the commander, plays vital role in maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property, while preventing and detecting crime, as well as ensuring public safety in course of delivering on its mandate.
Briefing Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and Western Regional Minister Hon Joseph Nelson, on performance of the command and its architecture, he assured the Minister that with a focused mind on police community engagement, proactive policing, and effective collaboration with other security agencies, the command, he indicated would surely improve service delivery and quality of security in the region
The Western Region, according to the commander, is divided into Western and Western Central Police Regions for operational purposes, with 5 divisions, 11 districts, and 38 police stations dotted across the specific zonal areas.
Mr. Osei Akoto highlighted the command’s successes, including a significant reduction in violent crimes, with only 13 robbery cases recorded in 2024.
All these achievements notwithstanding, he confirmed that challenges confronting their operations still persist, including the threat of environmental degradation from illegal miners (galamsey activities) chieftaincy disputes, and road traffic offences including accidents.
In response, Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to addressing these challenges, particularly galamsey, which affects the entire nation.
*Key Challenges:*
He condemned environmental degradation and the threat being posed by national security
In the region, the number of chieftaincy disputes, the Minister observed is alarming
Aside that, another issue he identified has to do with an alarming rate of fatalities, particularly along the Agona Nkwanta area
Police, government, and community stakeholders, the Minister underscores, must work together to address these challenges.
The Minister revealed his administration would support the police to continue to employ community-based policing, strategies for their proactive patrols.
Minister Nelson explained the essence of regular engagement between police and community leaders, with support from the Regional Minister and other stakeholders.
Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin [L] and Media personality, KSM
Veteran broadcaster Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating that it made a huge mistake by removing Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu—whom he describes as a “colossus”—and replacing him with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, whom he describes as “boisterous.”
According to KSM, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu effectively led the NPP caucus in Parliament, often demonstrating a strong measure of intelligence in his communication, regardless of whether one agreed with him or not.
Speaking on his KSM Show, as monitored by GhanaWeb, the outspoken media personality further criticized the choice of Afenyo-Markin, describing him as someone lacking “substance” and not being the ideal leader for the NPP in Parliament.
“…Among some of the things listed was Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu leaving as Majority Leader to bring in Afenyo-Markin. NPP, what were you thinking? You removed Kyei-Mensah—I call him a colossus of an MP. He understood Parliament. He knew how to communicate, whether you agreed with him or not. His system of communication had a strong measure of intelligence backing him up. I may disagree with one or two things, but overall, he was human and might have had his mistakes. But to remove him as leader of the majority? At least replace him with somebody of substance. Who did you choose? Afenyo-Markin. So boisterous—‘I will go to court’—that is what you chose. Was that your best choice?” he questioned.
KSM added, “To fire Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and bring in Afenyo-Markin to lead the majority? Isn’t it interesting where he has led you? He has led a whole contingent of a majority in Parliament to a desperate minority because of his intransigence, because of his approach to things. This boisterous, cantankerous nature is not really in sync with the politics of 2025. We actually have to upgrade everything.”

Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei-Asare
Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei-Asare, has questioned the feasibility of President John Mahama’s ambitious social intervention programs, arguing that they lack a clear funding strategy despite his own grim assessment of the economy.
Speaking in response to Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), the Atiwa East MP criticized what she described as contradictions in the President’s message.
“It is ironic that President Mahama describes Ghana’s economy as being in an intensive care unit (ICU), yet he is announcing massive new social programmes without explaining how they will be financed,” she said.
Osei-Asare acknowledged the economic challenges faced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government but insisted that decisive policies had been implemented to stabilize the country before Mahama took office.
She highlighted improvements in the financial sector, a rise in private sector credit, and strengthened foreign reserves as signs of recovery under the previous administration.
“The financial sector today is in a far stronger position than it was in 2016,” she noted.
“By October 2024, total banking sector assets had grown from GH¢81.2 billion in 2016 to GH¢367.2 billion. Private sector credit also saw an increase of 28.8% in 2024, compared to a negative growth of 7.5% in 2023.”
She accused the President of exaggerating economic difficulties to justify expansive spending and warned that his policy direction mirrored the excessive expenditures that led to Ghana’s 2015 IMF bailout under his administration.
“Ghana’s economy was not ‘criminally handled’ as the President suggests. We faced global economic difficulties but took responsible measures to mitigate them. The signs of recovery were clear before this government took over,” she said.

Myron Boadu, the Dutch Ghanaian striker for VfL Bochum (L)
Myron Boadu, the Dutch-Ghanaian striker for VfL Bochum, has been sidelined for nearly three weeks due to a torn muscle fiber in his thigh.
His last appearance was on Matchday 21, where he scored a brace in a 2-2 draw against KSV Holstein. This week, Boadu commenced running training, signaling a potential return to the pitch. However, according to coach Dieter Hecking, the match against TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday is too soon for his comeback.
Hecking noted that even for the upcoming Bayern Munich fixture, Boadu’s participation remains uncertain. The coach emphasized the importance of not rushing the striker back into action. A more realistic return date is expected for the away game against league leaders Bayern Munich on March 8. If not then, Boadu is anticipated to make his comeback at the latest a week later when Eintracht Frankfurt visits VfL Bochum.
This season, Boadu has been a key player for Bochum, making 11 Bundesliga appearances and scoring 7 goals. He has also provided 1 assist, showcasing his offensive prowess. His performances have been instrumental in the team’s attacking strategies.
KOKA says Iddrisu’s advice to Dumelo was misinterpreted
Entertainment critic and NPP communications team member, Kwaku Osei Korankye Asiedu, popularly known as KOKA, has weighed in on the recent controversy between John Dumelo and MP of Tolon, Habib Iddrisu.
Iddrisu came under fire from some industry personalities and netizens on social media after he advised the Deputy Minister of Agriculture-designate, John Dumelo, during his vetting to focus on his role as he was “no longer in the movie industry” and that he should be “as serious as he can.”
However, speaking in an interview with Max TV on February 28, 2025, KOKA defended Iddrisu’s comments, stating that the MP did not say anything wrong.
According to him, Iddrisu’s advice to Dumelo was misinterpreted.
According to KOKA, Iddrisu’s remarks were meant to guide Dumelo in his new role, emphasizing the need for humility, seriousness, and focus.
“Iddrisu did not say anything wrong. Real life is like drama on its own. The MP was simply advising Dumelo to take his new role seriously, work closely with his boss, and avoid letting his star personality overshadow his boss unintentionally,” KOKA explained.
He further clarified that Iddrisu’s intention was to caution Dumelo against treating his new responsibilities like a movie role, urging him to approach the position with dedication and professionalism.
“He was telling Dumelo to be humble, apply seriousness, and focus on assisting his boss. He shouldn’t take it as a movie because, in real life, everything requires commitment,” KOKA added.
KOKA also criticised those who lambasted the MP, suggesting that they may not have fully understood the context of his statement.
“It seems those attacking the MP were not mature enough to grasp what he said. I didn’t see anything wrong with his statement,” he stated.
Meanwhile, various creative arts personalities, including George Quaye, Nana Poku Ashis, Kwame Dadzie, D-Black, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, among others, have lambasted Iddrisu for his statement and demanded an apology.
Hours after a heated exchange with US President Donald Trump and vice-president J.D. Vance at Oval Office meeting, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stood his ground, making it clear that he saw no reason to apologise.
His focus remains on achieving a “just and lasting peace” to ensure that Russia cannot launch further attacks on Ukraine.
The stormy exchange with Trump and Vance reportedly stemmed from disagreements over US military aid and Ukraine’s long-term security. While Trump warned Zelenskyy about the risks of escalating the conflict, Zelenskyy pushed back, emphasising the need for continued support to prevent future Russian aggression.
In his much-anticipated prime-time interview with Brett Baier of Fox News, Zelenskyy acknowledged that the Oval Office exchange “was not good” but stood by his role in it. Rather than expressing regret, he defended the conversation, calling it “open” and “honest” — a discussion between friends who may disagree but remain committed to a shared goal.
Zelenskyy’s remarks suggest that despite the tension with Trump and Vance, he still views the US as a crucial ally. However, the meeting’s fallout and the uncertain future of US aid raise concerns about how Ukraine will navigate its war strategy and diplomatic ties moving forward.

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed renowned actor James Gardiner as the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA).
With extensive experience in the entertainment industry, Gardiner is expected to bring innovative strategies to revamp the NFA and boost the Ghanaian film sector. His role will involve:
Strengthening collaborations within the filmmaking industry
Enhancing the quality of local productions
Attracting international recognition for Ghana’s creative talent
Gardiner’s appointment is seen as part of President Mahama’s broader agenda to develop the creative arts industry and elevate Ghana’s film sector on the global stage.
Teachers across Kenya, through their union, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), have issued a stern ultimatum to the government, announcing plans for a nationwide strike beginning on March 3, 2025, should their grievances remain unaddressed.
The decision comes as frustrations mount over the government’s alleged failure to resolve the persistent healthcare crisis affecting teachers.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng on Friday reiterated his commitment to do his best at the Office of the Special Prosecutor and leave when his time is up. However, there are critical fixes to the office that he suggests are imperative to ensure that the office functions as expected and corruption crushed.
Among his suggestions are the need to entrench the OSP in the constitution, enact a comprehensive Corrupt Practices Act, and establish specialised anti-corruption courts to expedite justice.
He spoke at the UPSA Law School and One Ghana Movement Constitution Day Public Lecture on the topic: “A Few Good Men: Suppressing and Repressing Corruption and State Capture in Aid of Development.”
Agyebeng pointed to the necessity of formally incorporating the OSP into the national constitution, ensuring its longevity and independence beyond the tenure of any single individual.
“First, we must write the Office of the Special Prosecutor into the constitution and board it up firmly. Do not dwell on me. Leave me out of the equation. I am just one person – obviously. My tenure will end at some point, and like everyone else, I will leave the scene,” he stated.
He warned against the growing trend of equating the OSP’s work with his personal efforts, arguing that the fight against corruption should not be personalised but rather institutionalised for sustainability.
Agyebeng advocated for the enactment of a Corrupt Practices Act to clearly define corruption-related offenses, eliminating ambiguities that hinder effective prosecution. He criticised the current legal framework, describing it as convoluted and lacking clarity.
“The present formulation under section 79 of Act 959 is unhelpful and circuitous. It engenders confusion. It is symptomatic of our penchant for crafting criminal legislation in an arcane and roundabout fashion instead of simply stating what we mean to say,” he remarked.
He cited examples from Ghana’s legal history, including the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), where laws have been phrased in vague and overly complex terms, leading to prolonged debates and legal uncertainties.
To expedite the handling of corruption cases, the Special Prosecutor proposed the establishment of specialised anti-corruption courts, staffed with judges trained specifically in handling corruption-related matters.
“Third, we must set up specialised anti-corruption courts manned by especially trained judges in the field to swiftly and efficiently deal with corruption cases,” he noted, adding that justice must be delivered swiftly to deter corrupt practices.
Furthermore, he stressed the need to safeguard judicial independence and nurture a culture that rewards integrity while holding corrupt officials accountable.
Kissi Agyebeng also called for stringent measures to scrutinise unexplained wealth, not only among public officials but also within the private sector.
He proposed rigorous lifestyle audits and increased transparency in political party financing to curb the monetisation of public elections.
“On this score, we must forcefully address unexplained wealth not only among public officers but also private persons, with biting lifestyle auditing. Then again, we must highlight the vexed question of the opacity attending political party financing and the monetisation of public elections,” he urged.
He suggested the introduction of anti-corruption studies in Ghana’s basic and secondary school curricula as a way to help tackle corruption.
Kissi Agyebeng believes that early education on ethical governance and integrity will help cultivate a new generation committed to fighting corruption at every level of society.
“All I am saying is this – we must channel our anti-corruption laws as a construct for national development.”

President John Mahama, on Thursday, February 27, 2025, discharged his constitutional duty by presenting the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament.
The colorful event was graced by many dignitaries, including a former president, members of the diplomatic corps, and traditional rulers.
In his presentation, President Mahama spoke for over two hours without reading from a hard copy of a prepared text, as is usually done by many high-ranking public officials.
For those who watched on television, and for some uninitiated persons who were physically present in the chamber of Parliament House where the event was held, it appeared as though the president was speaking off the cuff for that long, which amazed many viewers.
One person who fell for this ‘illusion’ was the outspoken National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo.
During an interview on Asempa FM, monitored by GhanaWeb, the politician and chartered accountant sought to project President Mahama as an expert in speaking extemporaneously.
The following is the MP’s exchange with the program host:
Adongo asked: “What people didn’t observe—did you see the man speaking extempore?”
The host answered, “No, he didn’t.”
Adongo retorted, “His Excellency?”
The host responded, “No, he didn’t.”
Then Adongo asked, “What was he doing?”
The host answered, “He was reading from a teleprompter.”
Adongo retorted again, “But a greater part of the speech—”
The host responded, “No, no, he used a teleprompter.”
The MP then said, “I don’t want to debate you; I didn’t see anything.”
The host answered, “Yes, he did.”
Adongo, not satisfied with the answer, questioned, “Where was it (the teleprompter)?”
The host responded, “It was placed in front of him. It’s a screen. There were two—one on his left and the other on his right.”
President Mahama, a communications expert, both in opposition and in power, has resorted to using teleprompters when delivering public speeches—a style that is a departure from former presidents, who read prepared hard-copy statements.
A teleprompter is a device used to project a speaker’s script onto a transparent panel in front of a television camera lens in such a way that the text remains hidden from the camera.

CEO of Tree Crops Development Authority, Dr. Andy Osei Okrah
The Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) is set to commence the rollout of a US$220million tree crop diversification project for TCDA and COCOBOD this year, following the successful acquisition of funding from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank Group.
Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, the acting CEO of TCDA, confirmed the development during a visit to the authority’s head office in Kumasi.
He noted that the project has now entered its implementation phase and will enhance the production, processing, and trade of four key high-value four crops including cocoa, cashew, coconut, and rubber. Three of these crops namely, cashew, coconut and rubber will be under the operations of TCDA for the project.
Dr. Osei Okrah announced that the US$220 million credit facility will be disbursed between TCDA and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), with US$100 million allocated to TCDA and US$120 million to COCOBOD.
“The successful acquisition of this funding is a game-changer for Ghana’s tree crop sector,” Dr. Okrah stated.
“With $100 million going directly to TCDA, we are well-positioned to strengthen the entire value chain—from production to processing and export.”
The six-year project will focus on enhancing the production, processing, and trade of four high-value tree crops: cashew, coconut, rubber, and Cocoa.
Dr. Okrah emphasised that this initiative aligns with TCDA’s vision of regulating and developing the tree crop industry to drive economic growth.
“Our goal is to transform Ghana into a leading producer and exporter and trade of these key crops by ensuring a well-structured and sustainable value chain,” he added.
“This project will create jobs, improve farmer livelihoods, institutional capacity and boost foreign exchange earnings for the country, create jobs, and position Ghana as a major player in global tree crop markets,” he said.
His visit to Kumasi marked his first regional tour since his appointment by the President.
It provided an opportunity to engage with staff on key operational challenges, including logistics, revenue collection, funding, and capacity building.
He assured them of ongoing efforts to improve working conditions and enhance efficiency within the authority.
The acting CEO was accompanied by his deputy, Rich Kofi Kofituo, who is in-charge of operations at TCDA.
The project, initially launched last year, is expected to drive value addition and increase Ghana’s agricultural competitiveness, reinforcing the government’s commitment to diversifying the economy through the tree crop industry.

Mahama Must Withdraw These Appointments Immediately – Minority Demands Compliance with Law
News Hub Creator23h
The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized President John Mahama’s recent appointments, accusing him of violating Section 4(1) of the Presidential Office Act. According to this provision, the President must consult the Council of State before making such appointments. However, the Minority argues that since the Council has not yet been constituted, these appointments lack the necessary legal backing.
Patrick Boamah, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has called for the immediate withdrawal of the appointment letters and urged the President to follow due process. He emphasized that all appointments should be made in accordance with the law to uphold good governance.
Beyond the appointments, the Minority has also raised concerns about Ghana’s foreign policy direction, particularly regarding the appointment of an envoy to the Sahel region. They argue that this move could signal a shift in Ghana’s traditionally neutral diplomatic stance and are demanding clarification from the President on whether this appointment affects the country’s position within ECOWAS and the global community.
As tensions rise, the Minority continues to press for answers, insisting that the President must provide transparency on both the appointments and Ghana’s evolving foreign policy approach.

The university, in an official statement, confirmed that both students lived in the same hostel, adding to growing speculation about their relationship.
In the 30-second clip circulating on TikTok, Joana and Daniel are seen in a cheerful mood, smiling and laughing in what appears to be a casual gathering with friends.
At one point, Daniel affectionately pecks Joana on the cheek, drawing a surprised reaction from the person recording the video. This intimate gesture has further fueled discussions about the nature of their bond.
Social media has been flooded with reactions, with many expressing deep sorrow over Joana’s passing.
Some users have questioned Daniel’s involvement, while others have urged caution, reminding the public that being a suspect does not necessarily mean guilt.
One user commented, “They had a strong bond. It’s heartbreaking to see this video knowing what has happened.”

Daniel Tuffour, a former student of Prempeh College, is currently in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are yet to reveal official details regarding the circumstances of Joana’s death.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted concerns about student relationships, mental health, and safety on university campuses.

In a groundbreaking development, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that under President John Mahama’s leadership, Ghana has experienced a historic decline in treasury bill rates, signaling positive economic shifts for the country.
Taking to Facebook, Dr. Forson shared the remarkable news with Ghanaians: “BREAKING: Massive Drop in Treasury Bill Rates! In just 50 days under President Mahama’s leadership, treasury bill rates have seen a historic decline!”
The numbers are telling. The 91-day Treasury Bill has been slashed from an alarming 28.34% to 20.79%, reflecting an incredible 760 basis points drop. Similarly, the 182-day Treasury Bill has fallen from 28.96% to 22.98%, a 600 basis point reduction. The most significant change comes in the 364-day Treasury Bill, which has plummeted from 30.17% to 22.69%, a staggering 750 basis points cut.
These changes are seen as a bold and necessary move to stabilize Ghana’s economy, which has faced its fair share of challenges in recent years. By reducing the cost of borrowing, the government aims to encourage investment, lower inflation, and ultimately foster economic growth. For ordinary Ghanaians, this decline may translate into better access to credit and a more stable financial environment.
Economists and industry experts have lauded this aggressive move, noting that the reduced Treasury Bill rates could help ease the strain on businesses and consumers alike. The significant drops are expected to send a signal of confidence to both local and international investors, who will likely take the opportunity to reassess the country’s potential.
Dr. Forson’s announcement, which has since gone viral, also sparked widespread conversation on social media, with many expressing optimism about the future. The hashtag #MahamaEffect quickly gained traction, reflecting a growing sense of hope among Ghanaians.
While the government has made strides in implementing reforms to stabilize the economy, there is still much to be done. Analysts believe that continued fiscal discipline and strategic planning are key to sustaining this positive trajectory.
As the nation moves forward under President Mahama’s administration, the significant reduction in Treasury Bill rates stands as a symbol of the government’s commitment to resetting Ghana’s economic course and creating a more secure financial future for all.
Former Member of Parliament for Suame constituency in the Ashanti Region, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has outlined several qualities that made Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh popularly known as NAPO, the ideal running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections.
According to Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, he played a key role in the selection of NAPO as the party’s running mate, asserting that he possessed the qualities needed to secure victory for the NPP in the elections.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM on February 26, 2025, he revealed that after ruling himself out of consideration for the running mate position, NAPO became his preferred choice.
“We took a lot of things into consideration before selecting the running mate, especially when we assessed the situation in the Ashanti Region.
“ As I mentioned earlier, I ruled myself out of the race. One of the reasons I proposed NAPO was that Bawumia, as Vice President, already had significant executive experience. We, therefore, needed someone with strong parliamentary experience, as governance requires a deep understanding of parliamentary affairs,” he explained.
He continued, “Secondly, apart from me, he was the longest-serving MP in the Ashanti Region, aside from KT Hammond and Anyimadu.
“Thirdly, in the Ashanti Region, aside from me, the person who was most dedicated to his parliamentary duties was NAPO.
“Additionally, I felt that if we wanted someone to partner with Bawumia, we should consider a candidate who, after Bawumia’s tenure, could potentially take over. In terms of age, NAPO was the best candidate for succession planning.”
“In terms of his parliamentary activities, he also stood out as the best choice,” he added.
Despite the NPP’s selection of NAPO as running mate, the party ultimately lost the 2024 general elections to the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, 2024, declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the election.
Mahama’s party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), achieved historic success by securing a significant majority in Parliament.

Ghanaian gospel musician Jack Alolome has revealed that his name was fraudulently used to obtain GH¢30,000 from the National Cathedral Secretariat after he performed at one of their events in Kumasi.
According to Jack, while he was away in South Africa after the show, he received a call from Piesie Esther’s husband, Kofi, informing him that his name had come up on a radio show as a recipient of GH¢30,000 from the Cathedral Secretariat.
The amount had also reportedly been featured in the National Cathedral’s account statement, although he never received any payment.
Jack explained that he was invited to perform at the fundraising event by the founder and leader of Power Chapel Worldwide Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng’s associate pastor, Rev. Bempah. However, after the performance, Bempah assured him that he would hear from them regarding payment, but he never did.
Speaking in an interview on Accra FM on February 15, 2025, Jack expressed his shock and disappointment.
“Let me say this, the NPP party was wicked, and it was not just about wickedness… I was in South Africa when I received a call from Piesie Esther’s husband, Kofi.
“He told me that he had heard on the radio that I was given GH¢ 30,000 for singing at the fundraising event for the National Cathedral in Kumasi and that the amount had been included in the Secretariat’s accounts. Meanwhile, after my performance, I was only told that they would call me,” he stated.
Jack further emphasized that while he does not want to directly blame Rev. Bempah, he demands answers regarding the whereabouts of the money that was allegedly disbursed in his name.
“Rev. Bempah, an associate of Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, was the one who called me for the event. He assured me that they would contact me afterward, but I never received a call,” he added.

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, has announced that 100 Okada riders will be trained every month for the next six months as part of efforts to improve road safety and ensure responsible motorcycle riding in Ghana.
The initiative, spearheaded by Gold Coast Mobility Innovations Limited (Okadamotto), seeks to equip riders with proper road safety skills, defensive riding techniques, and accident prevention strategies.
“Our vision is to give training to Okada riders because most of them don’t have any idea about the use of motorbikes. Every month, we will train 100 Okada riders within Accra, and if God permits, we will expand to other regions,” Ras Mubarak who doubles as the founding partner of Okadamotto said.
Ras Mubarak further highlighted the role of technology in transforming the Okada industry, emphasizing the introduction of a mobile application designed to enhance convenience and safety.
According to him, the app functions similarly to Uber, allowing users to request motorbike rides online, ensuring a more structured and efficient transportation system.
He stressed that the platform would not only streamline operations for riders but also help regulate their activities, reducing the risks associated with reckless riding.
“We have a mobile app for motorbikes that runs like Uber, allowing users to request bikes online. We do not want reckless driving on the roads,” he asserted, adding that proper training, digital monitoring, and accountability are key to making Okada services safer and more reliable for passengers.
After the five-day training session, the first batch of riders received 100 helmets, t-shirts, phone holders, and other safety gear to enhance their riding experience.
The Board Chairman of Okadamotto, Dr. James Antwi, urged the riders to adhere to road signs and regulations to reduce accidents and improve public confidence in Okada services.
Dr. Proper Detti, Chief Financial Officer of Okadamotto, who led the training, emphasized key focus areas such as defensive riding techniques, road sign interpretation, and accident prevention strategies.
The initiative comes as the government moves to commercialize the Okada sector. Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, recently announced plans to officially license Okada riders as commercial transport providers.
During a visit to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Accra on February 10, 2025, Minister Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to regulating motorcycle transport.
“You may recall that we made a campaign promise to regulate the use of motorcycles for commercial purposes. That process starts today. We are now examining the necessary regulations and legal frameworks to allow them to operate commercially,” he said.
He further assured that Okada riders would receive proper training and certification, which would lead to safer roads and reduced congestion.
“Our brothers in the Okada business will now have their own licenses, be certified, and be well-trained to transport passengers safely,” he added.
The training session, which runs from February 24 to February 28, 2025, marks the first phase of a nationwide training programme to enhance the capacity of Okada riders across the country.

Nene Simpii Afedi Katamaso, the Yilagbeye-Divisional chief of Hiowe Gblaka Family (M)
Chiefs and elders of the Hiowe Gblaka Family of Hiowe Seh have called on the Prampram and Shai Traditional Councils to cease alleged harassment and resolve their long-standing boundary dispute in court.
The family made this demand during a press conference on February 27, 2025, reaffirming their historical claim to the disputed Seh-Gbugbla lands.
Speaking at the event, Nene Simpii Afedi Katamaso, the Yilagbeye-Divisional chief of Hiowe Gblaka Family of Doryumu-Dodowa of the Shai Traditional Area stated “We are the original custodians of the Seh-Gbugbla lands. Our ancestors settled here centuries ago, and any attempts to undermine our ownership will be met with legal resistance.”
The family outlined their ancestral lineage, tracing their roots back to Lanimo, the founder of the Dangme Kingdom.
According to them, Lanimo’s descendants, through Makpim and later Gblaka, established a legitimate claim over the land.
“We are not Shai; we are Seh. Our history is clear, and the records support our claim.”
They also highlighted past legal victories the Hiowe Gblaka Family had secured over Prampram and Shai claimants.
They referenced multiple court rulings in their favor, including a judgment delivered by Justice Elizabeth Ankumah on July 6, 2021, in Suit No. E1/NO/08/2014. The case was later appealed and dismissed by the Appeals Court in Accra.
“The law has been on our side, and we are ready to defend our rights in court again. The harassment from the Prampram and Shai Traditional Councils must stop,” the family declared.
They emphasized that there are no stool lands in Dangme, challenging the traditional councils’ authority over the disputed land.
They explained that further legal actions are already in progress, including an ongoing case at the Adenta High Court since November 2024.
“We urge them to meet us in court instead of resorting to intimidation and harassment. Justice will prevail,” Nene added.
The Hiowe Gblaka Family reiterated their demand for a lawful resolution to the boundary dispute, calling on all parties involved to respect judicial processes.

Eric Opoku, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, has assured smallholder farmers across the country of his willingness to work with them to revitalize the country’s agricultural sector for economic growth and transformation.
He stated that the government had proposed various initiatives focused on increasing productivity, ensuring food security, and improving farmers’ incomes and livelihoods.
The Minister gave this assurance when the Board, Management, and some members of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) paid a courtesy call on him at his office.
Opoku highlighted key initiatives, including the “Irrigation for Wealth Creation Programme,” which will be implemented across eight regions in the country, targeting between 10,000 and 25,000 hectares of irrigable land.
He emphasized that the ministry’s priority was to secure funding for the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam project.
Regarding enhanced access to inputs and services, he stated that the government would establish farmer service centres nationwide. These centres will provide inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and agrochemicals, as well as advisory and production services to farmers.
He underscored the critical role PFAG could play in this initiative, saying, “PFAG can partner with the government to provide inputs through the proposed centres.”
He also announced that the ministry had some machinery available at subsidized rates for farmers and farmer groups, encouraging PFAG and others to apply for a 60 percent subsidy component.
The Minister assured that the ministry would collaborate closely with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to construct feeder roads connecting food-producing communities to markets, aiming to reduce food price hikes.
Furthermore, he noted that the government was partnering with private processing companies to establish mini-processing centres in locations where perishable food crops are produced.
He mentioned a proposal to roll out the Ghana Agricultural Insurance Scheme through subsidies, providing insurance coverage for smallholder farmers to enhance their access to credit.
He encouraged farmers to form cooperatives to strengthen their bargaining power, making it easier to secure agricultural loans.
The Minister also stated that his ministry was liaising with other ministries to combat illegal mining and its adverse effects on food production and security.
“I am ever ready to work with you. You should also have confidence and trust in me so that we can work together. My principle as a minister is to contribute to ensuring food sufficiency in the country, and my doors are open for collaboration and partnership,” he added.
The members of the PFAG, led by National President Mr. Wepia Awal Adugwala, outlined critical areas requiring the ministry’s attention, including food production, food security, and economic development.
Other concerns raised included irrigation, market structures, farmers’ access to productive inputs and financial resources, and the urgent need to combat illegal mining to safeguard farmlands.
Bismark Owusu Nortey, the Acting Executive Director, assured the Minister of their unwavering support and willingness to collaborate with the ministry to address the needs of smallholder farmers.
He commended the Minister’s efforts in tackling farmers’ challenges and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to supporting the ministry’s goals and vision for food sufficiency in the country.
The National President subsequently presented proposals from PFAG to the Minister, who pledged to review the document and consider its recommendations to address challenges in the agricultural sector.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has stressed the need for the fight against corruption to move from mere discussions to collective actions.
Speaking at the 5th Annual Constitution Day Public Lecture on Friday, February 28, 2025, he pointed out the systemic and cultural factors that make political leaders in the country vulnerable to corruption.
“The demands of the office may cause a politician to find ways to survive or seek resources to meet certain expectations. As part of our culture, don’t we make ourselves vulnerable by what we say?
“Our cultural lifestyle and how we relate to ourselves make the leader very vulnerable. In trying to meet expectations, if you don’t have the resources, you may end up acting wrongly,” he stated.
The Member of Parliament of Effutu emphasized the need for civil society to play an active role in holding the political class accountable.
“I encourage discussions by civil society aimed at cracking the whip on the political class. I am one politician who believes that if you leave us loose with power, we may leave the room with empty coffers”, he indicated.
He pointed out that corruption is not limited to politicians, but extends to businesses and civil society organizations, which sometimes prioritize their interests over the broader fight against corruption.
“Many civil society organizations have their own interests. You may have a source of funding that is involved in a problem somewhere. When that same source calls on you to intervene, do you refuse because it has sustained you all these years? Sometimes, the issue is more about people’s interests than fighting corruption itself”, he noted.
Calling for a collective effort, he stressed, “It is not enough to talk about corruption; we must adopt a collective approach in dealing with it. If we over-focus on politicians while leaving out other actors in the chain of corruption, tackling this canker will remain a big challenge for us as a country.”
He urged citizens to remain vigilant and persistent in the fight against corruption
“The laws are just not enough. It is our collective that will make the difference. As citizens, we must never give up, because giving up would mean leading us to a failed state.
“Let us continue to crack the whip. Let us continue to be hard on the political class but also on other actors in the corruption chain”, he added.

Ministry of Health building decorated with the colours of rare disease
In a symbolic gesture of solidarity, the Rare Disease Ghana Initiative (RDGI) illuminated the Ministry of Health (MoH) building on February 28, 2025, to mark Rare Disease Day.
This initiative is part of a global movement to raise awareness about rare diseases and advocate for better healthcare access for affected individuals.
Speaking at the event, RDGI Executive Director Samuel Agyei Wiafe expressed pride in the progress of the movement.
“It has been eight years since we started celebrating Rare Disease Day, and today, we are happy to be here at the center where decisions regarding our health are made,” Wiafe said.
“We are lighting up the ministry in rare disease colors as part of the global ‘Change of Light’ initiative. Around the world, buildings are being illuminated, and Ghana’s participation signifies our commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.”
Representing the Ministry of Health, Public Health Specialist Mark Atuahene reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusivity in healthcare.
“The Ministry of Health has three key tenets in our national health policy: access, quality, and financial risk protection. The driving force behind our universal health coverage is leaving no one behind, and I can assure you that we are committed to this goal,” Atuahene stated.
For many in the rare disease community, the event was an emotional and hopeful moment. Irene Appiah Adjetey, a patient and mother of a child living with a rare disease, expressed her gratitude for the recognition and advocacy efforts.
“This means a lot to me and the rare disease community. I now see that there is hope, and we pray that as we move forward, more actions will be taken to make a lasting impact,” she said.
Rare Disease Day 2025 brought together key stakeholders, including government representatives, healthcare professionals, and advocacy groups, to highlight the urgent need for improved healthcare access, diagnosis, and treatment for individuals living with rare diseases in Ghana.

Undercutting is a practice where an insurance company offers lower premium
Ivan Abubakar Avereyireh, former President of the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), has called for a Gh¢1 million penalty as a punitive measure to curb undercutting in the insurance industry.
Undercutting, a practice where an insurance company offers lower premiums than its competitors to attract more customers, he said, had taken root in the sale of insurance products and must be nipped in the bud.
Delivering a keynote address at the 2025 Ghana Insurance Summit held in Tema, Mr. Avereyireh stated that the current penalty of 5,000 penalty units—equivalent to Gh¢60,000—was not deterrent enough, as most companies could pay the fine without their boards’ knowledge.
The summit, which brought together industry players and other relevant stakeholders from across the country, was themed: “Upholding High Ethical Practices: Tracking Undercutting for Long-Term Sustainability.”
He urged the National Insurance Commission (NIC) to consider increasing the penalty and pushing for an amendment to the provisions in the Insurance Act, 2021 (Act 1061), which stipulates the 5,000 penalty units.
“We are saying that after punishing the companies, we should identify the individual who signed that document that undercuts and single him out for punishment. The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) should be able to take the culprit out of the books. Then people will know that if undercutting happens, they will be punished and will refrain from doing it,” he said.
The former President warned that undercutting had dire consequences for the economy, as the insurance sector served as its backbone. He added that the practice was weakening companies by preventing them from charging the right premiums and paying rightful claims.
“If we have weaker insurance companies and unfortunate events occur, and we don’t come in to pay the claimants who genuinely purchased policies believing we would support them, you can imagine how disappointing it will be for them,” he said.
Mr. Avereyireh, who is also a former President of the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), said industry players had failed to act appropriately. He urged them to use innovations, artificial intelligence (AI), and other technologies to promote their products.
“Let’s be ethical and charge the right premiums that the National Insurance Commission requires. Let’s also use product differentiation, quality service, and excellent customer service to distinguish ourselves from other insurers rather than trying to cut back on the correct premiums,” he stated.
Dr. Abiba Zakariah, Acting Commissioner of the NIC, emphasized that the Commission would take a firm stance against those engaging in undercutting, especially as many had been calling for lasting solutions. She noted that while enforcing the law was crucial, continued discussions on the issue were also necessary.
“If tougher sanctions are what it takes to solve the problem, we will not shy away from implementing them. But sometimes, it is not only about fines and charges—it is about punishing people to the extent that they can no longer operate,” she noted.
The Acting Commissioner added that one way to curb the practice would be to have industry players undergo fit-and-proper tests to assess their professionalism and ethical conduct.
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Friday laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and People of Ghana, in commemoration of the Christiansborg Cross Road Shooting incident, which occurred on 28th February 1948.
On 28th February, 1948, veterans of world war two, who had fought with the Gold Coast Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force, organised a peaceful demonstration marching to Christiansborg Castle, Osu, Accra, Gold Coast (Ghana), to hand in a petition to the Colonial Governor, demanding that they receive end of war benefits and pay which they had been promised.
Before reaching the Castle, the veterans were ordered to disperse by the colonial police chief.
When they refused, he opened fire on them instantly killing three – Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Odartey Lamptey.
The death of three veterans led to outbreak of violence across the country and a strong agitation for independence, which served as a catalyst for Ghana’s independence on 6th March 1957.
Other wreaths were laid by General Thomas Oppong Preprah, the Chief of the Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) on behalf of the security forces.
Major General C.B. Yaache (Rtd), the Immediate Board Chair of the Veterans Association of Ghana laid the third wreath on behalf of veterans.
Nii Kobina Bonny V, Osu Alata Mantse laid the fourth wreath on behalf of traditional rulers, while Mr Michael Attipoe, a representative of the families of the three fallen heroes, laid the fifth wreath.
Independence at the event were Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister and Alhaji Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Minister for the Interior.
Gregory Afoko [Middle] with his family members after his release
After nearly a decade behind bars with a slow pace in trial, Gregory Afoko has finally walked free after executing a bail bond on Friday, February 28, 2025.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, who was held at Nsawam Medium Prison, has reunited with his family after meeting his bail conditions set by an Accra High Court.
Exclusive photos available to MyNewsGh.com show an emotional homecoming as Afoko was welcomed by family members who had long awaited his return.
Afoko was accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi in the 2015 acid attack that led to the tragic death of former NPP Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama.
Despite years of legal battles and repeated bail denials, his release came after the court granted him bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, one of whom had to be justified.
His family has expressed relief over his freedom.
Meanwhile, Asabke Alangdi, who was convicted in connection to the attack, remains in custody, while Afoko’s trial is expected to continue.
Meanwhile, watch as Nana Akomea, Kwesi Pratt clash on radio over public sector dismissals
Frank Asiedu Bekoe, Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, has criticized President Mahama’s decision to consolidate DRIP machines from various districts to regional levels, questioning the logic behind the move.
He claims that each district has its own machine, and removing them would result in inefficiencies and higher maintenance costs.
Former President Akufo-Addo on July 31, 2024, launched a comprehensive fleet of 2,240 pieces of equipment, including motor graders, backhoes, rollers, wheel loaders, bulldozers, tipper trucks, concrete mixers, water tankers, and low beds. These machines are expected to play a crucial role in the nationwide improvement of road infrastructure.
The DRIP is designed to empower Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with the necessary resources and equipment to rehabilitate and maintain roads within their areas. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to decentralisation, providing local authorities with the tools to effect meaningful change.
A four-member committee at each MMDA was to oversee the implementation of the program, ensuring high standards of quality and accountability.
The committees will include technical officers from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, and the Ministry of Roads and Highways, along with a representative from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces. The Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) were to chair these committees.
But delivering the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama stated that the DRIP equipment, which was acquired at the last moment as a knee-jerk reaction for electioneering purposes, would be reorganised into regional mobile maintenance units to provide emergency road works in the regions.
However, speaking with Rainbow Radio’s parliamentary correspondent, Boshyeba Afriyie, the Suhum MP stated that the President’s decision is unacceptable because it will slow down road construction.
“Unless the President does not trust the engineers at the assembly, unless the President does not trust MMDCs he has not appointed, I think that he has to leave these machines at the MMDAs for the district engineers and the MCE or DCE to continue to use these machines. But taking them from Suhum to Koforidua—if I need a road to be cleared from Supreso to Anpedwie, then I should write to my MCE in Suhum for the MCE to also write to Koforidua—if the machines are in short supply, then this policy can’t suffice. But every district has its own machines. Why are you going to lump them in Koforidua?
If the machines are there and they are not being used, look, they will get spoilt easily, and even the cost of maintaining them and buying spare parts will cost the state more. This policy should be abandoned because there was no thought-through thinking before this policy was settled on.’

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has called for anti-corruption measures to be embedded in Ghana’s Constitution, arguing that the fight against corruption must be directed at prevention rather than prosecution.
Speaking at the Constitution Day Public Lecture on Friday, February 28, 2025, he emphasized that Ghana’s approach to corruption has been ineffective because it prioritizes punishing offenders rather than eliminating opportunities for corruption.
“Write anti-corruption into the Constitution, tighten it, put the OSP into the Constitution, kill the argument. Let us start fighting. We are pretending.
“Preventing corruption is a better focus than after the fact, running after it. If we manage to prevent people from committing these offenses in the first place, that is a far greater achievement than imprisoning a handful of people,” he stated.
Kissi Agyebeng pointed out that Ghana’s legal system allows corruption cases to drag on for years, making it difficult to secure convictions swiftly.
“If we manage to imprison, let’s say, four or five people in a year, I’m being optimistic. The way our legal system is arranged, lots of lawyers and lots of law students, a good defence counsel can delay the case for years”, he indicated.
Agyebeng also criticized the current legal framework, arguing that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was not given sufficient powers to focus on preventing corruption.
“The main function of the OSP, which should be corruption prevention, was buried in Regulation 31, as if we do not even want it to be a priority,” he remarked.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was established by the former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2018 as a specialized independent anti-corruption institution in Ghana, in pursuance of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for a broader perspective on corruption, stating that it should not be limited to politicians but viewed as a societal issue.
Speaking at the 5th Annual Constitution Day Lecture monitored by MyNewsGH, he questioned the common narrative that corruption is solely a problem within the political class.
“Do we often narrow the issue of corruption and limit it to the political class, or perhaps we have to broaden it and look at it as part of the general life of all of us as a people?” he asked.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted how corruption allegations often arise based on personal interests, rather than genuine concerns about governance.
“Those who don’t get their contracts through are the ones who complain of corruption, but those who get theirs through go to church in white-white and thank God,” he noted.
He also argued that politicians are often unfairly labeled as corrupt, when, in reality, many struggle financially after leaving office.
“Many politicians, contrary to the view that they are so corrupt, are very poor, especially legislators. You can see them after office, and you would wonder,” he remarked.
Afenyo-Markin urged Ghanaians to be fair in their assessment of corruption and recognize that the issue extends beyond politics.
“We can act collectively and be very fair to the issues,” he stated, calling for a national conversation on how corruption manifests across all sectors of society.

Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister-Designate for Local Government
The recent shooting incident at a traditional ceremony in Nungua in Accra has sparked calls for stricter gun control measures at cultural events.
Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Deputy Minister Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has stressed the need for better oversight of firearm usage during such gatherings, emphasizing the importance of police supervision to prevent similar incidents.
“Where there are traditional programmes, there is some form of shooting, and we are supposed to use gunpowder for such things.
As we heard, it means they used a live bullet at the programme, which is not right,” she stated during her vetting before the Appointments Committee.
She added, “So, I believe with my minister, we will work with the Ministry of the Interior so that when there are such programmes where they will be using the guns, they need to take bullets from the police or there must be security presence at such functions.”
Her concerns follow an incident on February 26, 2025, when a musketeer at the enstoolment ceremony of Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson, also known as Naa Gamu, mistakenly discharged a live bullet, striking the newly enskinned queen in the thigh.
The event, which was meant to celebrate her and her husband’s installation as queen and chief of the Ga-Adangme Muslim Union (Nungua West), took a tragic turn due to the accidental shooting.
She unfortunately passed on at the hospital.

Accra, Feb. 28, GNA – The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a temporary interruption in water supply for customers in its Amasaman District.
The interruption is due to critical maintenance works at its Nsawam Treatment Plant.
The GWL, in a statement signed by Solace A. M. Akomeah, Communications Manager, Accra West Region, said the maintenance would take place from March 1 to March 7, 2025.
The maintenance, it further added, would lead to a reduction in water production, which would affect supply to some communities.
The affected areas include: Amasaman Township, Abehenease, Toman, Sapeiman, Pobiman, Obeyeyie, Daaresalam, Fise, Amanfrom, and parts of Pokuase, along with nearby communities.
GWL urged residents in those areas to store enough water for use during the period and assured customers that the maintenance was aimed at improving overall water supply reliability.
“We regret the inconvenience associated with this arrangement,” the statement added.
The Founding Partner of OkadaMotto and former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Central, Ras Mubarak has underscored the company’s commitment to enhancing road safety and formalising the okada industry in Ghana.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of OkadaMotto’s five-day motorcycle training programme, Mubarak highlighted key initiatives, including the distribution of uniforms, helmets, and reflectors to trainees, as well as the introduction of electric motorbikes for top-performing riders.
“We’re giving them the uniforms, the reflectors, and the helmets—all for free—as part of our efforts to ensure discipline among our riders and eliminate the insecurity associated with motorbike transportation,” Mubarak stated.
Mubarak disclosed that OkadaMotto is in discussions with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to introduce a demerit point system aimed at curbing reckless riding.
He stressed that only licensed riders will be allowed on the company’s app, with OkadaMotto facilitating insurance coverage and license acquisition for riders without proper documentation.
“One of the advantages of our app is that we take riders through strict checks, including verifying whether they have a valid license. If they don’t, we help facilitate the process to ensure they meet all legal requirements,” he explained.
He also revealed that the company is exploring partnerships with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to educate riders on social security contributions, ensuring they benefit from formal social protection schemes.
“SSNIT is not just for white-collar workers. Informal sector workers, including okada riders, can contribute and enjoy the benefits, especially in cases of accidents or retirement,” Mubarak noted.
As part of efforts to promote sustainable transport, OkadaMotto awarded four electric motorbikes from Zerosol to the best-performing trainees, highlighting the economic benefits of using eco-friendly alternatives.
“Going green is the future. Riders spend an average of GHS 60-100 daily on fuel, but with electric bikes, they will only need to charge them at any available charging port. This will reduce their costs to as little as GHS 5-10 per charge,” Mubarak explained.
OkadaMotto App to go live on March 7
Mubarak also announced that the OkadaMotto ride-hailing app will officially launch in Ghana on March 7, 2025, after a successful pilot in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
“We have tested the app in Liberia, where it was launched by the Vice President. It has been working well, and now, we are set to roll it out in Ghana,” he stated.
The app will enable passengers to book rides instantly, track their riders in real-time, and make secure payments, addressing concerns about safety and reliability.
To boost public confidence, all OkadaMotto riders will wear branded uniforms and reflectors, making them easily identifiable.
“For those who feel hesitant about using okada, from March, they should look out for riders in OkadaMotto uniforms and download the app to book safe and reliable rides,” Mubarak assured.
With these initiatives, OkadaMotto aims to formalise and sanitise the okada sector, providing a safer, regulated, and efficient mode of transport while contributing to job creation and youth empowerment in Ghana.

Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, has challenged President John Dramani Mahama to demonstrate his commitment to proper family values by backing the private member’s bill seeking to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities, rather than introducing a separate government-sponsored bill.
His comments follow President Mahama’s recent disclosure that consultations are ongoing with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the Proper Family Values Bill, aimed at prohibiting LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Friday, February 28, Ntim Fordjour emphasized that he, along with other MPs, has already reintroduced the bill to Parliament, where it awaits consideration.
The Assin South MP urged the president to support the existing private member’s bill, suggesting that any additional provisions could be incorporated afterward.
“If thereafter, the president thinks that there are other areas he finds extra legislation to address in addition to what has been provided for in the bill, then it is well in place,” he stated.
He further argued that Mahama’s plan to introduce a government-sponsored bill on the same issue undermines the significance of private member-sponsored bills, which are enshrined in Parliament’s standing orders.
“For him to discount a private member’s bill, he must be reminded that Parliament is an independent institution and that the executive cannot dictate to Parliament what it must do. Rather, Parliament will cooperate with you as a state if you sponsor your bill,” he asserted.
