Archbishop Adonteng Boateng Archbishop Adonteng Boateng

Ghanaian America-based Archbishop Kofi Adonteng Boateng, Head Pastor of Divine Power House and the General Overseer of Divine Word International Ministries, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the National Fire Service to investigate the recent fire outbreak at the Kantamanto market.

According to Archbishop Adonteng Boateng, should investigations unravel any culprits behind the fire incidents, such individuals must face the full rigor of the law.

Speaking in a New Year message on January 2, 2025, he condemned the recent fire incidents and called for a lasting solution.

“Seeing the level of destruction at Kantamanto, my heart is bleeding profusely thinking about the poor men and women who have lost their life savings, businesses, and all the pain they might go through.

“It saddens me that their economic plight will be worsened because people are already suffering from economic hardship in Ghana.

“It is my prayer that this is an accident and not an arson. If it is the work of arsonists, I pray that the Fire Service, the Police, and National Security will come together to thoroughly investigate this kind of wickedness by some saboteurs who don’t want to see Ghana progress,” he said.

He continued, “It is my prayer that we can bring private investors to Ghana to rebuild Kantamanto market and other markets to help poor Ghanaians.”

A devastating fire ravaged the Kantamanto market, causing huge damage to several shops and properties.

The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that the fire, which broke out around 1 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2024, has been contained and efforts are ongoing to prevent further destruction.

Footage from the scene shows the market engulfed in smoke, with the fire visibly wreaking havoc.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey who reported live from the site, confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far.

“While the fire has not yet been fully extinguished, it has been contained to prevent further spread. There have been no reported fatalities,” Nartey stated.

“The situation is still being managed, and we’re doing everything we can to control it.” he added.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with authorities working to determine the source of the blaze and assess the extent of the damage.

Parliament Goes Into Closed-Door Session To Discuss Ex Gratia

0

On Thursday, Parliament began a closed-door session to deliberate on the ex gratia payments for Article 71 officeholders, including the executive and the judiciary.

This development is part of a long-standing constitutional arrangements governing salaries, allowances, and benefits for specific public office holders under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Article 71 officeholders include high-ranking officials such as the President, the Vice President, the Speaker of Parliament, Deputy Speakers, and Members of Parliament (MPs).

Also included are the Chief Justice and Justices of the Superior Courts, the Auditor-General, and other independent constitutional officers, as well as Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and members of the Council of State.

The emoluments for these officeholders are determined by a committee appointed by the President in consultation with the Council of State.

The committee’s recommendations are then approved by Parliament for the executive and the judiciary, while the executive approves the benefits for MPs, the Speaker, and Deputy Speakers.

Critics have long argued that this reciprocal arrangement lacks accountability and transparency, with both arms of government favouring each other.

The system has been criticized as a “scratch my back, I scratch your back” approach, where the executive and legislative branches benefit at the expense of ordinary public sector workers and the nation’s economic challenges.

The debate over the ex gratia payments has sparked calls for constitutional reforms to review the emolument system and align it with the country’s fiscal realities.

However, Incoming President John Mahama has promised to scrap the Article 71 ex gratia arrangement, a move that has been welcomed by many Ghanaians.

Prof Mike Quaye chairs NPP’s 11-committee tasked to probe 2024 electoral defeat

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has established an 11-member committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, to investigate the party’s loss in the 2024 elections.

The committee has been given a three-month period to conduct its work and report back to the National Council.

According to the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the committee’s terms of reference include reviewing the internal elections and campaign strategy, as well as identifying the challenges that led to the electoral defeat and proposing solutions.

Former President John Dramani Mahama was declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election, marking a remarkable return to office after a contentious race. The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on December 9 that Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast.

He defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his main rival from the NPP, who garnered 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.

Mahama’s victory also delivered a major win for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which clinched a majority in Parliament.

Over 180 seats have already been confirmed for the NDC, including key constituencies previously held by the NPP, strengthening Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to resume the presidency.

Closure of McDan terminal an attempt to sabotage Mahama’s swearing-in – Group

0

Pressure group, the Committee for Public Accountability, has criticized the closure of the McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal, describing it as a deliberate attempt by the government to disrupt the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected President John Dramani Mahama.

The group claims the closure appears to be an effort to hinder the arrival of international dignitaries traveling by private jets, creating an impression of government interference.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) shut down the McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal over an alleged outstanding debt of over $3 million. The debt reportedly includes land leases, rentals, and terminal charges that had accumulated over time. Despite being given until Christmas to clear the arrears, the payments were reportedly not made.

McDan Aviation, however, has denied the debt allegations.

Speaking to journalists, Collins Amankwaah, Executive Chairman of the Committee for Public Accountability, described the terminal’s closure as a self-serving action by the government.

“How do you feel discomfort and discontent to see our fellow Ghanaian businesses flourishing? Why are we so wicked to each other? Why do we always want to undermine the very people that we’re supposed to support as people? What kind of people are we?

“Because of this, you shut down the only private terminal which complements the main terminal. Now we have an important event like the swearing-in of the president-elect. And I’m sure they know, GACL knows that foreign diplomats are coming and most of them will come with private jets, where are they going to land? Why are we doing this to ourselves? Won’t people think that it’s a clear sabotage as far as the event is concerned?”

High Court grants injunction against NPP’s Ernest Kumi from holding himself as MP-elect

0

The Koforidua High Court in the Eastern Region has granted an interim injunction against the swearing-in of Ernest Kumi as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency.

Mr Kumi was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission (EC) three weeks ago, following a dispute between the two main contesting parties in the constituency, the NDC and NPP over the collation of results.

However, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, Henry Boakye-Yiadom, has filed a lawsuit against the EC, Ernest Kumi, and the Clerk to Parliament, seeking an injunction to prevent Mr Kumi’s swearing-in.

After hearing the case, the court issued an order prohibiting Mr Kumi from being recognized as the MP-elect for Akwatia.

The court’s ruling states: “The respondents, their representatives, agents, servants, and all privies are restrained from proceeding to call, admit, register, swear in, recognize, or gazette the 1st respondent (Ernest Kumi) as the elected Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency.”

The court also instructed Mr Kumi to refrain from “holding himself as the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia constituency.”

The order will remain in effect for 10 days.

The EC’s declaration of Ernest Kumi as the winner was made at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, following several unsuccessful attempts to finalize the results in the Eastern Region.

Mr Kumi garnered 19,269 votes, while Henry Boakye-Yiadom of the NDC received 17,206 votes.

The Akwatia constituency, traditionally a stronghold for the NPP, is now a battleground for the NDC.

Asamoah Gyan opens up about past rifts with Prince Tagoe

0

Asamoah Gyan has candidly admitted to a long-standing misunderstanding with former Ghana teammate Prince Tagoe, revealing that they “did not see eye to eye” for years due to external influences.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session on Thursday, the former Black Stars captain explained the origins of their rift, attributing it to misinformation. “Prince Tagoe was brainwashed. People said bad things about me to him. I didn’t see eye to eye with him,” Gyan confessed.

Their tension came to public attention in 2018 when Tagoe openly criticized Gyan’s captaincy following Stephen Appiah’s tenure. Gyan responded by accusing Tagoe of using his name to garner attention.

Despite their troubled past, Gyan expressed admiration for Tagoe’s character and shared that their relationship has significantly improved. “He has a good heart, and he’s a good person.

I now have a great relationship with him,” Gyan said, adding that a recent phone conversation had strengthened their bond. Demonstrating his support, Gyan attended the funeral of Tagoe’s mother, a gesture that further solidified their reconciliation.

The former teammates’ renewed friendship serves as a testament to the power of reconciliation and mutual respect in overcoming past misunderstandings.

Prophets like Oja are drawn to the spotlight – Mr Happiness to Black Sherif

0

Ghanaian socialite and Holland-based commentator, Kofi Gabs Ghanaian socialite and Holland-based commentator, Kofi Gabs

Ghanaian socialite and Holland-based commentator, Kofi Gabs popularly known as Mr. Happiness, has strongly condemned Prophet Oja for his latest prediction about Black Sherif’s future in the music industry.

The New Year’s Eve prophecy by Prophet Oja claimed that Black Sherif’s flourishing career would face an abrupt decline in 2025 due to spiritual sabotage orchestrated by rivals.

According to the prophet, Sherif’s tongue had supposedly been “replaced spiritually,” making future success impossible without divine intervention.

However, Kofi Gabs has called these claims absurd.

In a video shared on his Facebook page, Gabs didn’t mince words, urging Black Sherif to dismiss the prophecy entirely.

“It’s laughable! Where were these prophets when Black Sherif was hustling to make a name for himself?” he questioned.

Gabs argued that prophets like Oja conveniently emerge when an artist is at their peak, claiming to foresee doom that only they can prevent.

“This is nothing but a cheap attempt to grab attention,” he added.

Taking a more reassuring tone, Gabs shared that he has biblical references to counter such claims.

“Black Sherif is protected by divine grace. No spiritual manipulation can derail someone destined for greatness. He’s safe, and he’ll keep dropping hits.”

Boy of eight survives five days in lion-inhabited game park

An eight-year-old boy has been found alive after surviving five days in a game park inhabited by lions and elephants in northern Zimbabwe, according to a member of parliament.

The ordeal began when Tinotenda Pudu wandered 23 km (14 miles) from home into the “perilous” Matusadona Game Park, said Mashonaland West MP Mutsa Murombedzi on X.

He spent five days “sleeping on a rocky perch, amidst roaring lions, passing elephants, eating wild fruits”, she said.

Matusadona game park has about 40 lions. At one point, it had one of the highest lion population densities in Africa, according to African Parks.

Murombedzi said the boy used his knowledge of the wild and survival skills to stay alive.

Tinotenda survived his ordeal by eating wild fruit. He also dug small wells into dry riverbeds with a stick to access drinking water – a skill taught in the drought-prone area.

Members of the local Nyaminyami community started a search party and beat drums each day to try and guide him back home.

But ultimately, it was park rangers who managed to find him.

On his fifth day in the wild, Tinotenda heard a ranger’s car and ran toward it, narrowly missing it, the MP said.

Luckily, the rangers returned, spotted “fresh little human footprints,” and searched the area until they found him.

“This was probably his last chance of being rescued after 5 days in the wilderness,” said the MP.

The park is over 1,470 sq km (570 sq miles) and is home to zebras, elephants, hippos, lions and antelope.

Across social media, people have been praising the young boy for his resilience.

“This is beyond human comprehension,” one person wrote on X.

Another user wrote: “He’s going to have one hell of a story to tell when he gets back to school.”

‘Black Sherif Will No Longer Produce Hit Songs, His Tongue Has Been Replaced’ – Prophet Oja Claims

0

Renowned Ghanaian prophet Fire Oja has stirred controversy with a startling prophecy about fast-rising musician Black Sherif. Speaking to his congregants, the prophet predicted that the artist, known for hits like “First Sermon” and “Kwaku The Traveler,” might struggle to produce more hit songs and could potentially fade from the music scene.

According to Fire Oja, “Black Sherif’s tongue has been replaced by another, and this change will hinder his ability to create hit songs.” He added that unless five powerful men of God intervene with prayers, the musician’s career could be at risk.

The prophecy has sparked mixed reactions online. While some netizens dismissed the claims and criticized the prophet, others have taken the matter seriously, urging prayers for Black Sherif’s career. Fans, however, remain hopeful and are rallying behind the young star, confident that his talent and determination will see him through.

Black Sherif has quickly become a household name, captivating audiences in Ghana and beyond with his unique sound and relatable lyrics. His meteoric rise has garnered a loyal fan base and established him as one of the most promising artists in the industry.

Devastating Fire Engulfs Kantamanto Market In Accra, Ghana

0

ACCRA, Ghana — A massive fire swept through Kantamanto Market in the early hours of Jan. 2, destroying more than 100 shops and causing millions of cedis in damages. The blaze, which began around 1:19 a.m. local time, has left traders reeling as firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) worked tirelessly to bring the flames under control.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cut power to the area to aid firefighting efforts, but the fire spread rapidly, consuming nearby structures, including the Ghana Commercial Bank building. Alex King Nartey, a spokesperson for the GNFS, described the situation as “very serious” in an interview with JoyNews.

Traders Count Their Losses After The Fire

The fire at Kantamanto Market is expected to have significant economic repercussions for traders and the local economy. As one of Accra’s largest markets, Kantamanto is crucial to the city’s commercial landscape. The destruction of goods and infrastructure will undoubtedly affect supply chains and livelihoods in the short term.

The fire has left many traders devastated, with some losing their entire livelihoods overnight.

“I have lost everything. Attempts to rescue some of my goods proved futile. I didn’t get one pesewa from here. I collected a loan to do this business. We will rise from these ashes. It’s not easy. My wife also sells ladies’ clothing; she has lost everything,” said Joshua Tetteh, speaking to Citi Newsroom.

Calls For Action

While some traders suspect arson, the GNFS has stated that the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Authorities now face the challenge of investigating the cause and implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Calls for better infrastructure, improved safety protocols, and support for affected traders are growing louder in the wake of this disaster.
