Five missing Kenyan youths freed amid uproar over abductions

0

Activists vow to maintain pressure against the government until those missing are accounted for Activists vow to maintain pressure against the government until those missing are accounted for

Five young Kenyan men – including a popular cartoonist – who went missing just before the Christmas holidays have been found alive, family members and rights groups say.

Kenya has been gripped by a wave of disappearances, with the state-funded rights group saying that over 80 people have been abducted in the last six months.

The abductions generally target government critics and are widely believed to be the work of security agents, although the authorities have not admitted responsibility.

They began in June last year during nationwide anti-tax protests, but increased in December, when AI-generated photos of the president in a coffin were widely shared.

The youth-led protests forced President William Ruto to withdraw a series of planned tax rises and shook his government, leaving his authority badly undermined.

Kibet Bull, known for his silhouette cartoon memes critical of the president, announced his release on Monday afternoon on X to much fanfare.

He told his 105,000 followers that he had been dropped off in the town of Luanda, nearly 370 km (229 miles) from the capital, Nairobi, where he was last seen in December.

Kibet Bull said straight after he was released he went to a disco.

His mother told the BBC she “rejoiced” after she heard the news that her son had returned.

“I gave him a call and we talked, we didn’t talk much, the moment he told me ‘I am Kibet’ and I heard his voice, I screamed, I celebrated until he hung up,” she said.

The others released on Monday include 24-year-old student Billy Mwangi in Embu, in the central Mount Kenya region.

Local MP Gitonga Mukunji told journalists that Mr Mwangi “was whipped and beaten while in a dark room. He is traumatised.”

Mr Mwangi’s father said his son was not able to discuss what he had gone through adding that he had been taken to hospital.

“He came home around eight in the morning. He walked by himself – his mother and I saw him. We thank everyone who has prayed and supported him,” he told the Daily Nation news site.

Last week, Mr Mwangi’s father broke down in court as he pleaded for his son to be released.

A relative of 22-year-old Peter Muteti, who was seized in Nairobi, on 21 December, told the BBC on Monday that he had been reunited with the family but was disoriented and unable to speak about the ordeal.

Amnesty International Kenya welcomed the releases and urged “the State to free all abductees and hold those responsible accountable”.

Two weeks ago the police denied responsibility for the abductions carried out by men in plain clothes across the country, some of which were captured on CCTV.

Rights groups and other Kenyans have linked the abductions to a shadowy intelligence and counter-terrorism unit of the security forces.

Amid the public uproar, President Ruto said last month: “We are going to stop the abductions so that our youth can live peacefully and have discipline”, while urging parents to take care of their children.

Until now, no-one had been freed since he spoke on 27 December, with activists planning protests on Monday to push the government to act.

On Monday the police released an update acknowledging the freeing of the men, saying they were already in contact with one of the abductees, Bernard Kavuli, who had presented himself at a police station.

The police said investigations into all cases of missing people were under way.

One other man – Ronny Kiplangat – has also been released, his family told local media.

Mr Kavuli, a content creator, was seized on the outskirts of Nairobi in December, while Mr Kiplangat is the brother of Kibet Bull.

Two others were seized after posting AI-generated images of the president.

At least 24 people are still missing.

The Law Society of Kenya has filed a legal case against the state, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of seven individuals abducted last month, including those who have now been released.

The situation continues to stoke fear across the country, with parents worried about the safety of their children and activists vowing to maintain pressure until all missing persons are accounted for.

Akufo-Addo Throws Out Petition Against Chief Justice

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed a petition calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, citing lack of evidence to support the allegations.

The petition, submitted by Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, accused the Chief Justice of misbehavior and incompetence in her administrative role.

The petition was filed on December 17, 2024, under Article 146(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides the legal framework for removing a Justice of the Superior Court or a Chairman of a Regional Tribunal for stated misbehavior, incompetence, or inability to perform duties due to infirmity.

Professor Asare alleged that the Chief Justice had implemented an “elaborate scheme” to influence judicial appointments and had interfered in the composition of duly constituted judicial panels without transparency or public interest justification.

However, after a thorough review, the President found several deficiencies in the petition.

Key among them was the lack of supporting evidence or documentation to substantiate the claims.

The allegations, including claims of panel reconstitution, issuance of practice directions, and purported constitutional breaches by the Chief Justice, were found to be unsupported by evidence.

The petitioner failed to demonstrate any factual basis or provide credible documentation to substantiate these claims.

Furthermore, the President observed that the processes and practices cited by the petitioner, such as the Chief Justice’s administrative responsibilities under the Courts Act, were consistent with the law and established practices.

The President also expressed concern that the petition was prematurely circulated in the public domain, in breach of Article 146(8) of the Constitution, which mandates that proceedings of this nature be held in camera to protect the integrity of the Judiciary.

Based on these findings and observations, and in alignment with the recommendations of the Council of State, the petition is deemed frivolous, vexatious, and unmeritorious.

President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his commitment to the independence and integrity of the judiciary, which remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy.

The Office of the President cautioned against attempts to undermine judicial independence through baseless allegations, emphasizing the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions in addressing grievances.

According to the Ghanaweb report. The monument of Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, the Executive Director of Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), was destroyed barely moments after Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, was sworn in. This unexpected incident has sparked a whirlwind of comments on social media, with Ghanaians around the country expressing a mix of elation and outrage.

The statue, which had been erected to honor Mrs. Addo-Danquah for her service at EOCO, was reportedly toppled by anonymous individuals in what many believe was a symbolic act of protest or a reflection of the political upheaval that followed Mahama’s inauguration. The incident has renewed debate about her term at EOCO and her perceived connection with the previous administration, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Social media responses have been highly different, highlighting the profound differences in public opinion. One person expressed their approval, saying, “Good news,” and another said, “Good effort! The Akufo-Addo statue remains at Takoradi Roundabout. A third comment expressed a desire for responsibility, saying, “Waiting for her arrest.” Criminality at EOCO has finally ended.” These remarks highlight the conflicting perspectives on Mrs. Addo-Danquah’s leadership and the larger backdrop of Ghanaian politics.

Mrs. Addo-Danquah was scrutinized and criticized throughout her time at EOCO, with some claiming that her investigations and enforcement actions were politically motivated. Critics accuse her of disproportionately pursuing opposition figures while protecting former government cronies. Her admirers, on the other hand, believe she carried out her duties professionally and made significant contributions to Ghana’s fight against economic and organized crime.

Many see the removal of her statue as a symbolic rejection of her legacy and an indicator of the tense political atmosphere that has formed after the change in leadership. While some see the act as an important step toward accountability and justice, others see it as an unneeded and damaging gesture that undermines trust in public individuals and institutions.

This episode highlights larger considerations regarding how Ghanaian presidents’ legacies are perceived after they leave power. It also exposes Ghana’s deep political differences, where even emblems of service may become heated battlegrounds. The split in reactions to this tragedy highlights the nation’s concerns as it navigates a new political terrain.

As news of the statue’s removal spreads, many Ghanaians are waiting for formal statements from the EOCO, Mrs. Addo-Danquah, and the new administration led by President Mahama. This episode serves as a harsh reminder of the challenges of maintaining national unity and respect for institutions, especially during times of political change.

The reactions to this occurrence reflect the intricacies of Ghana’s political atmosphere, in which history, legacy, and public perception are intertwined. As the country transitions to new leadership, the destruction of Mrs. Addo-Danquah’s statue could spark broader debates about accountability, governance, and the role of prominent people in defining the country’s destiny.

Mahama’s administration will bring positive change

0

Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed strong confidence in the newly inaugurated Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

Tinubu commended Mahama’s leadership and voiced optimism about the positive changes and progress his administration will bring to Ghana.

“I’ve no doubt your administration will bring about positive change and progress,” Tinubu said when he spoke at the inauguration ceremony of Mahama in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

He also pledged Nigeria’s unwavering support for Mahama’s government and encouraged the president to reach out whenever assistance was needed.

Meanwhile, President Mahama in his inaugural speech outlined his vision for the country’s future, emphasising the need for a national reset to address the pressing challenges facing Ghana.

Reflecting on the state of the nation, Mahama acknowledged the widespread economic hardships and the challenges of the past few years but expressed optimism for a brighter future.

He assured the nation that even though the economy had been hard in the past, these conditions were not permanent and that his new administration would bring positive change.

“If democracy is celebrated as a superior means of governance, then its outcomes must be more tangible and benefit them in their individual lives. Any honest introspection and reflection on the pulse of our nation would reveal that many within the population of our nation do not feel that they have benefitted from or partaken in this democratic dividend.

“We are a people hit by a severe economic crisis and hardships and in the last few years, we have moved from crisis to crisis. But there is hope on the horizon.

“Today should mark the beginning of a new opportunity. An opportunity for us to make a difference in our governance and our economic management. We shall reset our dear nation, Ghana,” he stated.

Jinapor warns of power crisis due to fuel shortage

0

John Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, has raised concerns over an impending power crisis, commonly known as ‘dumsor,’ due to a severe fuel shortage.

Speaking after the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, Jinapor revealed that the country’s fuel stock is dangerously low, with only five hours of fuel remaining.

“I have bad news for you, the confirmation we are getting is that we have only five hours of fuel stock. If you look at heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don’t have up to two days, and so in two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel,” Jinapor stated.

He further criticized the outgoing administration for its failure to procure necessary fuel supplies, leaving the incoming administration in a vulnerable position.

“This administration has not ordered any fuel as we speak, and it takes on average four weeks for the fuel to arrive and four weeks for the fuel to be treated, and so we are in a very serious situation,” he said in an interview with Joy News.

Jinapor also pointed out that during the transition, the outgoing administration had assured them that fuel parcels had been procured. However, checks indicated there is not enough fuel to last even two days.

“Today, right after President Mahama assumed office and I served on the transition, my checks indicate that we do not have fuel that can cater for even two days, and so clearly we have a major, major problem,” he emphasized.

The MP warned that even if the incoming administration orders fuel immediately, it will take approximately eight weeks for it to arrive and be processed, leading to an extended period of power outages.

“We are in for real trouble,” Jinapor concluded, urging immediate action to address the looming crisis.

John Mahama sworn in as Ghana’s president, promises to ‘reset’ the country | Politics News

With around 20 African leaders in attendance, the 66-year-old is sworn in as Ghana’s president for third time.

John Mahama has been sworn in for a second term as Ghana’s president at a ceremony in the capital Accra, with around 20 African leaders in attendance.

Mahama won 56 percent of the vote in the nation’s presidential election on December 9, defeating ruling party candidate and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 41 percent.

Mahama takes over from outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who served two terms in power.

“Today should mark the opportunity to reset our country,” the 66-year-old new president, wearing the West African country’s national dress, told a jubilant crowd decked in the green, red, black and white hues of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) party on Tuesday.

Energy radiated from Accra’s Black Star Square, as a sea of elate faces waved Ghanaian and NDC flags, chanted and broke into spontaneous dance to the beat of drums and the blaring honk of vuvuzelas.

Among those present were Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senegal’s Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Burkina Faso’s leader Ibrahim Traore, Kenyan President William Ruto, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Gabon’s Brice Oligui Nguema.

Mahama, 66, was sworn in alongside Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the first woman to become vice president in Ghana.

Mahama’s return to the presidency ends eight years in power for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose last term was marked by Ghana’s worst economic turmoil in years, a bailout by the International Monetary Fund, and a debt default.

Mahama, who led Ghana from 2012 to early 2017, had previously failed twice to win back the presidency. But in December’s election, he managed to tap into expectations of change among Ghanaians.

On Black Star Square, supporters of the elected leader exuded joy, hope and optimism.

“I’ve never been so proud to be Ghanaian,” Akosua Nyarko, 28, a teacher from the southern city of Cape Coast, told the AFP news agency. “The energy here is amazing … This is the dawn of a new era!”

Mohammed Abubakar, a 50-year-old farmer from Tamale in northern Ghana, said he was confident Mahama would prioritise rural development.

“Coming here to Accra for this historic event is a dream come true,” the farmer said, adding that Mahama’s “leadership gives me hope that my children will have a better future”.

A writer and devotee of Afrobeat music, Mahama wrote in his memoir – My First Coup d’Etat, And Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa – that he was changed by his boyhood experiences during a 1966 military coup.

He was born in northern Ghana as a child of privilege, his house being the only one in the village with a diesel generator.

His father, who served as a junior government minister, was briefly detained and interrogated by the 1966 coup leaders but later released unharmed.

Mahama was also a member of parliament and chairman of the West Africa Caucus at the Pan-African Parliament in Pretoria.

With a history of political stability, Ghana’s two main parties, the ruling NPP and the NDC, have alternated in power equally since the return to multi-party democracy in 1992.

The country of 33 million people is Africa’s top gold exporter and the world’s second-largest cocoa producer.

The throngs of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters assembled at Black Star Square, also called Independence Square, were speechless as Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, the younger brother of Ghana’s incoming president, arrived.

Social media users shared a video of the business magnate’s arrival to Independence Square.

Ibrahim’s attendance at the inauguration was anticipated since it was a momentous occasion for his family, but many were surprised by his mode of transportation given the collection of high-end vehicles he owned.

NDC Sacks Stonebwoy From Victory Concert

0

In a shocking turn of events, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has removed popular Ghanaian artist Stonebwoy from the lineup of their upcoming Ghana Victory Concert.

The decision, announced by the concert organizers, comes amidst public outcry and concerns from the party’s grassroots over Stonebwoy’s inclusion.

According to the organizers, the decision was made in response to public sentiments and concerns from the party’s supporters.

“We sincerely apologize to all members of the National Democratic Congress, particularly the grassroots, for what may have appeared to be a lack of discretion on the part of the organizers,” the statement read.

This development comes as a surprise, given that the NDC had heavily utilized Stonebwoy’s song “Jerejere” during their campaign.

However, it appears that the party’s supporters were not pleased with the artist’s inclusion in the concert, prompting the organizers to take action.

The Ghana Victory Concert, scheduled to take place on January 5th at the Legon Stadium Forecourt, is part of the NDC’s celebrations following their victory in the 2024 Ghanaian general election.

The event is expected to feature performances by various artists, although Stonebwoy is no longer among them.

The decision to drop Stonebwoy from the concert has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users expressing support for the move while others have criticized the party for their handling of the situation.

He also promised to provide assistance with the reconstruction of the market and the installation of CCTV cameras to improve security.

“We will do well to help you with those items you need to put up on the market,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“When we finish the market, there is something I want to propose. We have to ensure that we establish an internal security. Apart from the internal security, I will ensure that we install CCTV cameras around the market.”

The Vice President’s visit and donation are a welcome relief to the affected traders, who are struggling to recover from the devastating fire.

The government’s commitment to supporting their recovery efforts is a testament to its dedication to the welfare of Ghanaians.

Krobo ECG Calls For Responsible Bush Burning Practices

0

Ing. Christopher Apawu

Ing. Christopher Apawu, the District Manager for the Krobo Distirct of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited has made a plea to the public, esepcailly farmers to be extra careful when clearing their farmlands to burn them for the next planting season.

Ing. Apawu made this plea when he had discussions with a cross-section of media persons on 3rd January 2025. He indicated that “in 2023 to 2024, during the Harmatan season, we lost some of our poles due to bush burning. However, we have not had any incident in ti’s 2024 to 2025 season”. He added that some farmers will definitely be preparing to burn their farms for the new planting season, hence his call for all to be responsible with such bush burning.

During the discussion, he added that all of us need to be each other’s keeper. In that, if one happens to chance on another person preparing to burn their farm but they have not created boundaries which will prevent the fire from spreading to other farms, as well as boundaries around electricity poles and transformers, we should get close and offer that education to them to help protect properties and to prevent possible uncontrolled fires.

Responsible bush burning can be achieved by farmers, ensuring that they have cleared out their boundaries of bushes to prevent the fire from spreading. Additionally, one should stay close to the burning bushes with materials to quench fire, so in case it travels to unintended places, it can be put off. Additionally, one should know and have the contact of the Fire Service on standby. People who cook on their farms, smokers who drop little pieces of lighted cigarete stubs, and those who hunt for animals with fires and smokes should all ensure that they have put off their fire completely when they are done to prevent possible fires.

The Manager also touched on persons who decide to enter the ECG distribution network to change phases or do whatever connections on their own. He expressed worry about this situation as he said things could get fatal as such persons could easily get electrocuted. He also added that for such unlawful entry, such persons will be prosecuted when caught.

Jackie Appiah at the inauguration Jackie Appiah at the inauguration

Ghanaian actresses Kalsoume Sinare and Jackie Appiah were among the notable figures who attended the swearing-in ceremony of President John Dramani Mahama on January 7, 2025.

The historic event, held at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra, brought together dignitaries, celebrities, and political figures from Ghana and across Africa to mark the beginning of Mahama’s tenure as the sixth president of the Fourth Republic.

Kalsoume Sinare, a celebrated actress and a known supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), made her presence felt as she navigated the venue alongside Jackie Appiah and their manager.

Sinare’s attendance came as no surprise to those familiar with her long-standing alignment with the NDC and her advocacy for the party’s values.

However, Jackie Appiah’s appearance alongside Sinare sparked curiosity and speculation among onlookers.

While Jackie has historically maintained a neutral stance on political matters, her presence at such a pivotal event raised questions about her political leanings.

The pair was spotted searching for their designated seats, drawing attention from attendees who were eager to catch a glimpse of the two screen icons.

Their appearance added a touch of glamour to the already momentous occasion, underscoring the intersection of entertainment and politics in Ghana.

“You can count on Nigeria’s support” -Tinubu assures Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Jan 07, GNA – Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured his Ghanaian counterpart of his country’s support at any given time.

“My dear brother, I am here to walk with you. You know you can count on Nigeria’s support at any given time. You call on me,” Mr Tinubu said in his address during the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama at the Independence Square in Accra.

“We are your brothers and sisters. We shall always be there for you. May your administration be a profound source of progress for you, Ghanaians, and the entire region,” the Nigeria President stated.

President Tinubu, who was the special guest of honour at the inauguration, said he was confident that the new Government, under the leadership of President Mahama, would work with Nigeria to strengthen the powerful bond, leading to greater shared progress and prosperity for the people of the two nations.

“I have no doubt that your administration will bring about positive change and progress. Your accession to the powers you hold, also marks a new and invigorating momentum in pursuing sub-regional integration and progress.

“With laser focus, we can tackle our people’s most pressing problems of poverty, youth unemployment, instability, insolvency, and many other problems, amping our desired progress. May Ghana’s democracy continue to grow stronger. May progress and prosperity be your portion,” President Tinubu said.

He urged both nations to look forward to a future filled with hope, opportunity, and progress.

The Nigerian President described the inauguration as a celebration of African democracy as Ghana and her beloved people marked the transition from one democratic government to another, further demonstrating that in West Africa, the people were capable of democratic and productive endeavours.

“We need not prove ourselves to them. We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We will lift our nations out of poverty and build strong and resilient economies for our people,” President Tinubu stated.

He said he was in Accra not only as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also as an African in resolute support of Ghana and her people, describing the moment as a source of pride and honour for Ghana, the entire continent and its diaspora.

“The sun is out, and the sky may be blue, but I see today a black star rising, rising high in the African sky. This black star shines over this nation and its rays spread across this continent with a sense of shared history, hope, compassion, unity, devotion to our common wealth,” he added.

President Tinubu said the shining star reminded Africans of who they were. “…that star reminds us always to strive and work together, bond together, even when we disagree. We must choose the path of peaceful dialogue. Never can we do harm to our brothers, nor can we permit any outsider to disrupt our bonds of brotherhood.”

Judge’s Recusal Adds Twist To Fanteakwa North Parliamentary Election Dispute

0

In a surprise move, High Court Judge George Krofa Addae has recused himself from presiding over the Fanteakwa North parliamentary election dispute due to personal connections that could compromise his impartiality.

This development has added another layer of complexity to the already contentious legal battle between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The dispute centers on the validity of the results from the 2024 general elections, with the petitioners alleging electoral irregularities.

The case has attracted considerable public attention, with many eagerly awaiting the outcome.

To understand the context of this dispute, it’s essential to revisit the events that led to the current situation.

On December 10, 2024, the official Returning Officer for Fanteakwa North, Zacharia Adams, declared Haruna Apaw Wiredu of the NDC as the winner of the parliamentary election.

However, the NPP raised concerns over the authenticity of pink sheets from two polling stations, prompting the Electoral Commission (EC) to suspend proceedings and conduct a thorough review.

The review, led by a Deputy Returning Officer, revealed significant discrepancies in the pink sheets, which ultimately tipped the balance in favour of Kwame Appiah Kodua of the NPP.

The revised figures secured the seat for the NPP, leaving the NDC reeling.

The NDC’s legal team has argued that the re-declaration of the results by the EC was unlawful and exceeded the jurisdiction of the Deputy Returning Officer. Lawyer Isaac M. Larbi, representing Haruna Apaw Wiredu, emphasized that only the designated Returning Officer has the authority to declare election results.

‘It’s tricky, they fly a lot’ – Arteta on Carabao Cup balls

0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta still believes his side can reach the Carabao Cup final – but says his players must first master the “tricky” ball used in the competition.

The Gunners were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle in Tuesday’s semi-final first leg after goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Arsenal had 23 shots during the match but just three were on target, as Gabriel Martinelli struck the post and Kai Havertz headed a simple chance wide.

When he was asked about the missed chances in his post-match news conference, Arteta said he would not tell his players to change anything, but did mention the impact the ball had.

“We kicked a lot of balls over the bar, and it’s tricky that these balls fly a lot so there’s details that we can do better,” he said.

“But at the end that’s gone – there’s no way back, it’s about the next game and that’s our world, the reality is our world.

“It’s just half-time. When I see the team play, and how we deal with a lot of situations and play against a very good team, I must say I have full belief that we can go out there and do it.”

Prior to the defeat by Newcastle, the Gunners had scored 11 goals in three EFL Cup ties so far this season.

The ball in the competition is made by Puma, while the ball used in the Premier League is manufactured by Nike.

“It’s just different,” said Arteta when asked to go into more detail about the ball.

“It’s very different to a Premier League ball, and you have to adapt to that because it flies different.

“When you touch it the grip is very different as well, so you adapt to that.”

Does Arteta have a point?

While Arsenal were made to pay for their wayward finishing against the Magpies, the numbers from their previous three ties in this year’s competition do not suggest the ball has been too much of a problem for them.

They thrashed Bolton 5-1 in their opening game, before beating Preston 3-0 and Crystal Palace 3-2 to reach the last four.

Their shooting stats in the EFL Cup are also broadly similar to both the Premier League and Champions League, with Adidas manufacturing the ball used in Europe’s elite club competition.

  • Before Tuesday’s semi-final first leg, 27 of Arsenal’s 51 shots in the EFL Cup this season were on target – an average of 53%.
  • In the Premier League, 102 of Arsenal’s 197 shots have been on target – an average of 52%.
  • In the Champions League, 33 of Arsenal’s 57 shots have been on target – an average of 58%.

‘ORAL is needless, it is for personal vendetta’

Outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin Outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin

The outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the newly formed Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, describing the initiative as unnecessary.

Speaking at the dissolution of the 8th Parliament on January 6, 2025, he argued that the initiative undermines existing state institutions tasked with combating corruption.

“I want to add my voice to the call you made, that we should have a better way of dealing with issues of alleged corruption… we should allow due process of law to take effect. It is on this note that I condemn in no uncertain terms the establishment of a so-called committee called ORAL (Operation Recover All Loot). I hold the humble view that it is a needless committee, it has no constitutional backing, and it is only in place for a personal vendetta,” he remarked.

He continued, “If we allow this committee to continue with its so-called wild goose chase, it will disturb the governance of this country. We don’t need any so-called ORAL. We have institutions of the state. However unhappy we are with their work, we must support them to do their work.”

The ORAL team is responsible for investigating and documenting cases of alleged corruption, as well as recovering misappropriated state resources.

Major fire in Accra destroys Ghana’s main second-hand apparel market

A huge fire in Ghana’s capital Accra has burnt to a cinder the country’s main second-hand apparel market, affecting thousands of traders and causing considerable losses to the local economy, officials have said.

Aerial shot taken on January 2, 2025 of the ruins of the vast Kantamanto second-hand clothes market in Accra’s business district, which has been destroyed by a major fire – Nipah Dennis / AFP

The fire, which started in the late evening of January 1, destroyed large swathes of the West African country’s vast Kantamanto second-hand apparel market, displacing thousands of traders, as reported by Ghana’s disaster management authorities.

The Kantamanto market, home to more than 30,000 traders and located in the heart of Accra’s business district, is a key source of revenue for many Ghanaians. The disaster was a cause of great anguish among local merchants and residents.

Hundreds of traders, many of them specialised in reselling second-hand clothes imported from abroad, chiefly from Europe, are now facing an uncertain future. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had to deploy thirteen fire engines to fight the flames. On Thursday, the market’s once lively alleys had turned into smoking ruins extending as far as the eye could see, testifying to the fire’s catastrophic devastation.

“This is a disaster,” said Alex King Nartey, a GNFS spokesperson, speaking to AFP. “We found no one seriously injured, but the loss to the economy is huge. According to the investigation’s initial findings, an electrical fault could have caused the fire to start, but we aren’t ruling out the possibility of arson,” he added.

King Nartey went on to say that operations to completely extinguish the fire might continue. According to the rescue services, the goods lost to the fire could be worth millions in the local currency.

The Ghanaian government has not yet issued a formal response to the tragedy.

“All is lost”

For traders like Fred Asiedu, 45, the fire was a disaster. “Everything I owned was here – my goods, my savings, my future… Now, all is lost,” he said. “How do I start my business again? The government must intervene. Without aid, our life will become unbearable,” he added.

Adjoa Amu, 39, a mother of three, shared the same feelings of deep concern. “I’ve been a salesperson here for 12 years. This market fed my children, enabled me to pay their school fees. And now, there’s nothing left except ashes,” she said.

Richard Amo Yartey, an official at the National Disaster Management Organization, said an investigation into the origins of the fire has started. “The scale of the destruction is harrowing, but we are determined to identify the causes and provide prompt assistance to the traders affected,” he added.

David Kwadwo Amoateng, president of the Traders Association of Ghana, urged the government to act swiftly, since “this market is a vital part of our economy. Traders need an emergency aid fund to deal with the situation. Without immediate intervention, the source of income for thousands of people is under threat,” he told AFP.

“We owe it a duty to our fans, the football community and the public to express our concern about recent developments in the Ghanaian football landscape. In our opinion, the results at the international level is a reflection of the development at the local level.

We are playing our fourth season in Ghana’s top division and unfortunately we have to admit that the conditions are steadily deteriorating. There is now no sponsor for the league, nor has a television contract been negotiated at this point.

How will the league ever acquire sponsors again if refereeing performances like yesterday’s become the standard and any criticism is immediately sanctioned by the association? Lots of incidents and happenings have gone unattended, an experience that has left us with more questions than answers.

Such tendencies continues to chip away every sense of the definition of the trust our esteemed fans and the public have reposed in us.

Ghana football is at a crossroads. If we want to get back to our old strength, it requires a minimum of integrity, professionalism, transparency and sportsmanship. As the reigning runner-up of the Ghana Premier League we see it as our duty not to stand idly by.

We have consistently committed ourselves to working with young players and must be allowed to raise the question of whether the Ghana Premier League, as we are experiencing it these days, is a healthy environment for highly talented young players who should develop a proper sporting spirit and a winning mentality to make them internationally competitive.

We are determined to join whichever group or organization(s) to make the sport a clean one and better for healthy competition.

We have resolved to stand by the games principle of FairPlay and speak truth to power”.

Accra Lions have played 16 matches of the ongoing Ghana Premier League with 13 points and on the 17th of the league log.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed a notice of appeal following an Accra High Court’s decision to grant the New Patriotic Party’s mandamus application, ordering the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation and declaration of parliamentary results in four disputed constituencies.

Speaking to journalists after the court’s ruling on Saturday, January 4, 2025, the NDC’s lead counsel, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, stated, “I must say that this is something we anticipated.”

“We came to court prepared with our notices of appeal, and as you can see, immediately after the judgment was read, we went to the court registry to file the respective notices concerning the four affected constituencies. Here is the notice of appeal, along with the subsequent stay application.”

“It is something we knew would happen. With the ruling on the preliminary matter, it was clear where the judge was heading,” he added.

The Court also directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide adequate security to the Electoral Commission to facilitate the completion of the process.

The affected constituencies are Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South.

The NPP argued that the processes in these constituencies were not concluded, and thus, the declaration of results could not proceed.

The Court upheld the NPP’s argument, granting its mandamus application and ordering that all collation processes be completed before any declaration is made regarding the election results.

I’m proud to be labelled as a ‘propagandist’ but the truth is, Ghana is broke

0

The CEO of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has boldly embraced the title of “propagandist” while highlighting the severity of Ghana’s current economic situation.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV on January 4, 2025, Joe criticised the government for failing to address the nation’s financial challenges, asserting that Ghana is in financial distress.

“Oh, I’m proud to take on the label of propagandist if that is what it takes to call it like it is. Listen, I’m fine. I’m very proud to stand up and say I’m a propagandist because I say Ghana is broke. Ghana is broke,” he stated.

“And being broke cannot be remedied by just international reserves. Please. I thought this was the government that said if the fundamentals are wrong, the exchange rate will expose it,” he added.

The CEO pointed to unresolved issues left by the outgoing government, including the budget deficit, inflation, and the exchange rate.

He argued that borrowing to sustain consumption, rather than investing in productive infrastructure development, is a clear sign of financial mismanagement.

“Where’s the exchange rate? Where’s the inflation rate? Where are the interest rates? Where is the unemployment rate? Please. Ghana is broke because we still cannot balance a budget, and we still have to borrow to consume. That is why we are broke.”

“By our definition, if you are paid and at the end of the month you still have to borrow to consume, not to undertake infrastructure, then you are broke. Borrowing to consume—by my books, you are broke, and that’s it,” he said.

He took a firm stance, reiterating, “I’m proud to be called a propagandist.”

Zambia confirm Nora Hauptle as new Copper Queens coach

0

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) have appointed Nora Hauptle as the new head coach for the Zambia women’s national team, the Copper Queens.

The FAZ confirmed the appointment on Saturday, January 4, 2025. Hauptle joins Zambia on a three-year deal until 2028 after leaving her role at the Black Queens after deciding not to extend her stay due to personal reasons.

The Swiss trainer will lead the Copper Queens for the next three years with her first major assignment expected to be the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in July this year.

Hauptle was in charge of the Black Queens until last month when her contract ended having been at the helm of affairs since 2023.

“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed Swiss national Nora Hauptle as the new head coach of the Copper Queens on a 3-year deal,” an official statement said.

“Hauptle, a former Swiss international defender, brings a wealth of experience, including coaching in Germany’s Frauen-Bundesliga and Ghana’s Black Queens. She will build on the team’s astonishing milestones, including Bronze at WAFCON 2022, a FIFA World Cup debut in 2023, and Back-to-back Olympic qualifications (Tokyo 2020 & Paris 2024).

“Outgoing coach Bruce Mwape has been reassigned to FAZ’s developmental programs as he undertakes the CAF Pro License course.

“Let’s welcome Coach Hauptle and wish her success as we prepare for the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco!”

Hauptle sealed Ghana’s return to the WAFCON for the first time since 2018 and was one game away from qualifying the team to their first-ever Olympic Games.

Her departure means the Black Queens are without a coach six months before the tournament to be staged in Morocco.

Southern African leaders pushing for dialogue to end crisis in Mozambique

0

Regional leaders are pushing for dialogue to resolve Mozambique’s deadly post-election unrest as violence escalated in the aftermath of a ruling by the southern African country’s top court validating the outcome of the disputed October 2024 polls.

Mozambique descended into chaos after the opposition rejected the results of the October 9 polls, where ruling Frelimo party candidate Daniel Chapo was declared winner of the presidential vote.

Foreign and local observers said the presidential and parliamentary elections were marred by irregularities.

The main opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane has been leading protests that have paralysed the economy and led to the death of more than 150 people as well as the arrest of thousands of protesters.

Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are now pushing for a negotiated settlement to the electoral dispute, with Pretoria this week dispatching envoys to Mozambique to persuade the feuding parties to opt for dialogue.

On Tuesday, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is the chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, said the regional body was calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urgent dialogue.

“We are deeply concerned by the continued loss of lives, injuries, destruction of private property and public infrastructure,” President Samia said in a statement.

“The current situation has also caused significant economic challenges on the nation and disrupted cross border trade, and hindered the free movement of people. SADC calls upon all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that escalate violence and unrest.”

She said the regional body was ready to facilitate a peaceful resolution to “the existing challenges”.

“We, therefore, appeal for an immediate cessation of all hostilities, while reiterating the importance of prioritising the well-being and livelihoods of Mozambican people,” President Samia said.

“SADC stresses all parties to embrace peaceful and constructive dialogue as the preferred avenue to address grievances. Our collective aspiration remains the restoration of harmony and stability in Mozambique, in line with our shared vision of good governance, social cohesion, and sustainable development in the region.”

Outgoing Mozambican President Fillipe Nyusi on Monday met leaders of opposition parties to explore the dialogue option, but Mr Mondlane was conspicuously absent, as he is in exile.

The runner-up in the presidential election was forced to flee Mozambique after two of his aides were shot on the streets of Maputo by unknown assailants in the early days of the protests.

Podemos, the party that backed Mr Mondlane’s candidacy, Nova Democracia, Renamo and MDM, whose leaders met President Nyusi, insisted on their position to reject the outcome of the polls, but said they were open to dialogue.

The latest statements are a major climbdown from the hard-line stance by Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa and current SADC chairperson, who last week said the bloc expected the opposition to accept the ruling by the Mozambique Constitutional Council on the polls and move on.

“SADC stands ready to assist the incoming government and the people of Mozambique in consolidating their electoral democracy on the basis of the aforesaid court decision, which should be held sacrosanct by all,” President Mnangagwa said in the statement.

South Africa, which has been affected the most by the crisis, with trade disruptions and an influx of Mozambicans escaping the unrest, said it had “noted with concern the ongoing violence and subsequent disruptive protests in reaction to the announcement” by the court.

“South Africa calls on all parties to commit to an urgent dialogue that will heal the country and set it on a new political and development trajectory,” Pretoria said in a statement issued by the Department of International Relations.

“Furthermore, South Africa is ready to assist Mozambique in any manner to facilitate this dialogue. South Africa calls on all parties to exercise restraint and calm.”

Stephen Chan, a political analyst based in London, said South Africa’s calls for dialogue to end the conflict were more practical.

“(President) Mnangagwa’s statement is following a literalist reading of law and legal procedure,” Prof Chan said. “It ignores violence, almost as if washing hands off a crisis in democratic expectations.”

“By contrast, the South African offer of facilitation of dialogue is far more statesmanlike and caring for the affected people of Mozambique.”

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), which sent a delegation to Mozambique between December 16 and 18 to assess the situation, said the crisis in that country went beyond the recent disputed elections.

It urged President Mnangagwa to show leadership as SADC chairman by pushing for dialogue that would lead to a peaceful resolution of the political disputes.

“The (ZCC) delegation heard that the post-election demonstrations, which are mainly driven by youth and women, also point to issues beyond the current electoral process,” ZCC said in a statement.

“They point to underlying issues of high levels of cost of living and unemployment, lack of opportunities for young people and many other issues that are affecting the ordinary citizens.

“We call upon the government of Zimbabwe as the chairperson of SADC to use its influence in encouraging the government of Mozambique and all the political parties in Mozambique to come together and put the interests of the southern African region ahead.

“Mozambique is a key player (in the region), hence the continued political disturbances will have ripple effects on neighbouring countries, including Zimbabwe.”

The crisis in Mozambique, a country battered by unending civil wars and natural disasters over the years, has had ripple effects on its neighbours, especially those that are landlocked.

Countries such as South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia and Malawi recently sounded the alarm as the unrest took a toll on their economies.

Zimbabwean companies have also complained of logistical problems in transporting exports to Mozambique’s ports. Zambia, which is already facing significant electricity shortages due to a severe drought, said it lost 300 megawatts of imports from Mozambique “indefinitely “due to disruptions caused by the protests.

The country stopped generating electricity from its main hydropower station after water levels in Kariba Dam dropped drastically due to the drought.

Africa’s second-largest copper producer had turned to Mozambique to plug its electricity supply gap.

Eswatini said its sugar industry, a mainstay of the mountain kingdom’s economy, was struggling to export to the United States and European Union markets. The country’s sugar exporters depend on a terminal at the port of Maputo that is jointly owned by Eswatini, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

In Malawi, the disruption in the movement of cargo from Mozambique has hampered the transportation of fuel from the ports of Beira and Nacala.

The National Oil Company of Malawi said it had resorted to importing petroleum products through the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam, which complicated its efforts to end a fuel shortage that has stretched for several months.

South Africa has, on several occasions, been forced to close the strategic Lebombo border post with Mozambique due to the violence.

The region’s biggest economy is said to be losing more than $500,000 due to restricted movement of imports and exports through the Mozambican ports.

Cornrow braids are not just practical but also a fashionable statement that can be personalized to suit any occasion, personality, or mood. Here’s a look at some of the most stylish cornrow braid trends that are expected to dominate in 2025.

1. Chunky Cornrows

For those who love a bold, statement-making look, chunky cornrows are set to be huge in 2025. These thick, bold braids not only stand out but also add volume and texture to your hair. Paired with accessories like gold beads, charms, or colorful thread, chunky cornrows can create an effortlessly chic vibe that works for casual outings or more glamorous events.

2. Cornrows with Curls

In 2025, the fusion of cornrows and curls will be one of the most sought-after styles. After braiding the hair into neat cornrows, the remaining ends are left free to curl naturally or styled into bouncy, voluminous curls. This look combines the neatness of braids with the playful texture of curls, giving a balanced and sophisticated appearance that works for both professional and social settings.

3. Feed-In Cornrows

Feed-in cornrows are an excellent choice for those looking for a sleek, smooth finish. This technique involves adding small amounts of hair gradually to create longer, fuller braids. The result is a flawless, polished look that doesn’t show any visible lumps or bumps. Feed-in cornrows can be styled in different patterns, such as straight backs, zig-zags, or curved designs, allowing for endless customization.

4. Goddess Cornrows

Goddess cornrows are a luxurious twist on the classic cornrow. The style involves adding loose curls or twists throughout the cornrowed sections, giving the braids a more voluminous and textured look. This style is perfect for those who want to combine the elegance of cornrows with a touch of glamour, making it an ideal choice for weddings, parties, or any upscale event.

5. Half Cornrow, Half Loose Hair

For a more casual, everyday look, the half cornrow, half loose hair style will continue to be a popular choice in 2025. In this style, the front or sides of the hair are braided into cornrows, while the rest of the hair is left loose, flowing naturally. This combination of structure and freedom is perfect for creating an effortlessly stylish yet laid-back appearance.

6. Creative Patterns and Designs

2025 is all about pushing the boundaries of traditional cornrows. Expect to see intricate patterns, geometric designs, and even symbols or initials woven into the braids. These personalized, artistic cornrows are perfect for fashion-forward individuals who want to add a unique twist to their hairstyle. From zigzags to diamond shapes, the possibilities are endless.

Cornrow braids in 2025 will continue to embrace the beauty of individuality and creativity, making them more than just a hairstyle, but an art form. Whether you opt for sleek, minimalist designs or bold, adventurous patterns, cornrow braids will remain a stylish and timeless choice for every occasion.

Stonebwoy dropped from NDC Victory Concert after grassroots backlash

0

Celebrated Reggae/Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has been removed from the lineup of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Victory Concert, which is slated for Sunday, January 5, 2025.

This decision, made just days before the event, comes in response to backlash from the party’s grassroots and youth supporters about Stonebwoy’s inclusion on the artistes list.

The reigning Telecel Ghana Awards Artiste of the Year was initially unveiled as one of the headliners for the upcoming concert on Sunday but the announcement was met with mixed reactions, sparking a social media storm under the hashtag #DropStonebwoy.

Critics argued that Stonebwoy’s inclusion was inappropriate due to the artiste perceived lack of alignment with the NDC’s ideologies or his previous political affiliations. Many party members and supporters took to social media to voice their concerns, urging the concert organisers to reconsider their decision.

The supporters objections were rooted in a belief that the inclusion of certain performers should reflect unwavering loyalty to the party’s ideals and vision.

A vocal section of the supporters argued that the concert was a moment to celebrate the NDC’s historic victory in the December 7 general elections, and therefore, the artistes performing should align closely with the party’s ideology and should have played a role in its campaign.

In response to the mounting pressure, the organisers of the NDC Victory Concert released an official statement on Friday, December 3, confirming Stonebwoy’s removal from the performance lineup.

“The organisers of the Ghana Victory Concert, responding to public sentiment and concerns from the party’s grassroots regarding Stonebwoy’s inclusion, have decided to remove the artist from the concert lineup. We sincerely apologise to all members of the National Democratic Congress, particularly the grassroots, for what may have appeared to be a lack of discretion on the part of the organisers,” the organisers statement read in part.

Below is the full statement.

Obuasi East NDC Withdraws Court Case Challenging Election Results

0

In a surprising turn of events, Samuel Aboagye, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, has withdrawn his court case challenging the Electoral Commission’s (EC) re-declaration of election results.

The case, which was filed after the EC’s second collation of results overturned Aboagye’s initial victory, raised concerns about alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

Samuel Aboagye, who was initially declared the winner of the Obuasi East parliamentary election on December 7, 2024, had his victory overturned after the EC conducted a second collation of results on December 21, 2024.

The re-collation, which was conducted at the EC’s Greater Accra Regional Office, confirmed Patrick Boakye Yiadom of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner by a narrow margin of 19 votes.

In his court application, Samuel Aboagye sought to have the EC’s second collation and declaration of results declared null and void.

He also requested the court to mandate the EC to gazette the results collated on December 8, 2024, which he claimed declared him the winner.

However, in a sudden change of heart, Aboagye’s lawyers, led by Elikplim Agbemava, withdrew the application with the liberty to re-apply.

According to the court records, Gary Nimako, counsel for Patrick Boakye Yiadom, did not oppose the withdrawal request.

However, Justice Forson Baah Agyepong subsequently struck out the application as withdrawn with the liberty to re-apply.

The withdrawal of the case brings to an end the controversy surrounding the Obuasi East parliamentary election results.

Court Orders Recollation Of Results In Tema Central

0

In a significant development, the Accra High Court General Jurisdiction 2, presided over by Justice Forson Agyapong, has granted an application by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate results in the Tema Central Constituency.

This ruling comes after the EC had earlier declared results for the constituency, which the NPP contested.

The court’s decision was based on three key grounds.

Firstly, the EC failed to collate results from all polling stations in the constituency.

Secondly, the person who declared the results was not the designated returning officer.

Thirdly, there was evidence that the NPP had demanded a recollation of results, but the EC had refused to act.

As a result, the court has ordered the EC to collate the results of the two outstanding polling stations and add them to the already collated results.

Additionally, the court has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to provide security for the EC to carry out this exercise.

This development is the latest twist in the ongoing controversy surrounding the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections.

The EC had earlier gazetted the results for 274 constituencies, but the results for two constituencies, including Tema Central, remained outstanding due to disputes over the collation process.

The NPP’s application to the court is part of its efforts to ensure transparency and accuracy in the electoral process.

The party had raised concerns about irregularities in the collation of results in several constituencies, including Tema Central.

Reno Omokri has raised questions about the whereabouts of Peter Obi’s son and what he is doing for Nigeria as he compared him to Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu.

Reno Omokri titled the Instagram post “Why the scrutiny on Seyi Tinubu and the secrecy on Oseloka Obi?”
