Parliament approves GH¢68.13 billion Mini-Budget of 2025

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Jan 3, GNA – Parliament Thursday gave the green light to a GH¢68.13 billion Mini-Budget for the first quarter of 2025, presented by Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam.

This approval follows thorough deliberations by the Budget and Finance Committees of Parliament, ensuring the government’s operations will continue uninterrupted until the incoming administration presents a full budget.

After the Finance Minister’s presentation of the Expenditure in Advance of Appropriation for January to March 2025 to the House, Mr Alban Bagbin, the Speaker, referred the proposal to a joint committee – the Budget and Finance Committees – for consideration and report back to the House in line with Article 180 of the 1992 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament.

As approved, the budget will fund government operations for the first quarter of the year, pending the incoming administration’s presentation of a full budget for the remaining year.

As a consitutional requirement during transition years, the Mini-Budget would prevent fiscal distruptions and ensure a smooth transition of power.

It would also address Ghana’s pressing fiscal needs while promoting economic stability.

Among the budget highlights was a Total Revenue and Grants Projected at GH¢42.54 billion (3.5 per cent of GDP), including: GH¢40.67 billion in Domestic Revenue.

Also, the report of the Joint Committee cited a GH¢1.87 billion in Tax Revenue; a GH¢68.65 million in Grants; GH¢1.04 billion from Social Security Contributions and other revenue sources.

It said: “For expenditure provisions, allocations will focus on critical government functions, including tax refunds of (GH¢2.37 billion), healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.”

During the approval, an intense debate on the Floor of the House underscored the contrasting views of both the Majority and Minority caucuses of the House.

Significant among them were spending priorities in healthcare, education, and infrastructure, as well as revenue mobilisation strategies.

The approval of the Mini-Budget reflects Parliament’s commitment to averting a government shutdown amid concerns over delays in its presentation.

Meanwhile, despite earlier accusations by the Minority Caucus that the Finance Minister deliberately postponed the presentation, the Majority Caucus had dismissed the claims, emphasisng the critical role the budget played in maintaining government operations.

The passage of the budget signals a critical transition as President-elect, Mr John Dramani Mahama’s administration prepares to take office.

Livelihood and Environment Ghana marks 20 years of impactful advocacy

0

By Yussif Ibrahim

Kumasi Jan. 03, GNA – Livelihood and Environment Ghana (LEG), a research and advocacy Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) established in 2004, has marked 20 years of advocating for environmental protection in Ghana.

The organisation has also been championing human and economic rights of communities in mining areas, who have had to endure the brunt of the negative impacts of the operations of mining firms with impunity.

Apart from empowering vulnerable groups in such communities for sustainable livelihoods, LEG has also advocated for adequate compensations for individuals whose farmlands and other property have been affected by operations of mining companies.

It has also undertaken community advocacy and sensitisation, capacity building and training sessions, women economic empowerment, afforestation, as well as engagements with duty bearers and policy makers over the period.

With so many success stories to its name over the past two decades, the organisation is celebrating its impact in the environmental advocacy space as it strategises the way forward in the next decade.

The 20th anniversary is being celebrated on the theme, “Reimagining Nature, Livelihoods and Community Rights.”

In the last nine years, over GHC 10 million has been given as soft loans to 2,017 women and 13 men through a Women Empowerment Programme to enable beneficiaries either start or expand their businesses.

A total of 3,753 people in five mining affected communities and two others have received training in various employable skills and basic business and financial management principles.

Mr. Richard Adjei Poku, Executive Director of LEG, at a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary in Kumasi, said economic empowerment of citizens in mining communities was as critical as the protection of the environment.

He said community rights were fundamental to social justice and equity because they ensured that communities had the power to participate in decisions affecting their lives, access resources equitably, and live free from harm and exploitation.

The right to clean air, quality water, healthy soil, and decent living wages by inhabitants in mining communities must not be compromised under any circumstance, Mr. Adjei Poku emphasised.

“However, these rights are often overlooked, particularly in regions affected by industrial activities like mining.

Community rights are frequently enshrined in national constitutions or international treaties but rarely upheld in real life,” he stated.

He disclosed that many communities had won legal tussles that appeared unsurmountable through the interventions of LEG.

The Executive Director announced the organisation’s unwavering commitment to continue advocating for the rights of mining communities, while building their capacity economically in the coming years.

He acknowledged the support of Third World Network Africa, Oxfam Novib, STAR Ghana Foundation, Global Greengrants Fund and ISODEC for the implementation of their programmes over the years.

Fight against galamsey affected my party and presidency

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reflected on the significant impact of the fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, on his presidency and his political party.

During his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament in Accra on Friday, January 3, 2025, the President acknowledged that the battle against galamsey had considerable political consequences.

He stated, “The fight against galamsey led to the loss of several parliamentary seats by my party in the 2020 elections, which ultimately influenced the composition of the eighth Parliament. This, in turn, affected the implementation of my policy agenda and had a significant impact on my second term as President.”

Despite the challenges, President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism about the renewed support for the government’s anti-galamsey initiatives, especially as the 2024 elections draw nearer. He emphasized the importance of continued efforts to combat illegal mining and safeguard the nation’s natural resources.

“I welcome the many loud converts to the fight against Galamsey that suddenly appeared in the run up to the 2024 elections and I pray that more and more of us get to embrace the need for the protection of our lands and waterbodies,” he remarked.

He emphasised the importance of responsible mineral extraction for the benefit of future generations.

“We owe it to future generations of Ghanaians to extract our minerals in a manner that protects our lands and waterbodies,” President Akufo-Addo urged.

By Edward Williams

Hohoe (V/R), Jan. 3, GNA – Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Blagodzi, Volta North Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, has assured residents within the police jurisdiction of continuous service in 2025 and beyond.

He said policing was a shared responsibility between the citizenry and the police; hence, while the police continued to serve them, citizens must be prepared to ensure they played their part too.

DCOP Blagodzi and his team from the Command toured some churches within the Police Region including Hohoe on New Year eve to educate and worship with them.

He said citizens must continue to be security conscious and always be on alert for any unlawful acts and report to the police.

DCOP Blagodzi said the Church had played and continued to play a key role in the sustenance of peace within the Command.

He called on Christians to continue to pray for leaders of the country for development.

Reverend Father Paschal Afesi, Parish Priest, St Augustine Catholic Church, Hohoe, urged the faithful not to worry themselves but fix their eyes on God who was the author of life.

He said there was the need for faithful to surrender themselves to God who had walked them gradually and safely to the end of 2024.

Rev Fr Afesi said faithful must start 2025 and end it with God since it was beautiful to start and end with God.

He called on them to assess how they spent the 2024 which was 365 days and asked themselves how many days were spent with God and their families.

Rev Fr Afesi said throughout the year, there had been mistakes as well as successes and the only ways to live in 2025 were to admit the mistakes made, try not to repeat them, and learn and make amends.

He urged the faithful to enter 2025 with a renewed heart and life which was the only way they would be proud of entering a new year.

Togbe Buami IX, Divisional Chief of Gbi-Bla, urged faithful to let bygones be bygones, unite, and eschew hatred in 2025.

Mr Anthony Godsway Tsra, Chairperson, St Augustine Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), commended the faithful for their tremendous support in 2024.

He said they hoped to continue supporting the Church towards its growth and development in the New Year.

Some principal streets came alive during the wee hours of the New Year with jubilation through the throwing of knockout fireworks.

Ghana’s AfCFTA ambitions stunted by legal bottlenecks

0

African Continental Free Trade Area headquarters in Accra African Continental Free Trade Area headquarters in Accra

Ghana’s aspiration to fully leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is facing significant headwinds due to a series of legal hurdles, according to a new report.

A collaborative effort by the University of Professional Studies Law School and top law firms, the report, titled “A Situational Analysis of Ghana’s AfCFTA Preparedness and a Review of the Legal, Policy, and Regulatory Framework,” dissected the nation’s legal landscape, revealing potential stumbling blocks for AfCFTA success.

The report highlights those existing regulations governing foreign direct investment, such as mandatory registration with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and the $500,000 minimum capital requirement for expatriates, could deter foreign businesses from participating in the AfCFTA market.

Furthermore, restrictions on foreign ownership and utilization of land and real estate are identified as a significant impediment, particularly for sectors reliant on land, such as agriculture, tourism, and real estate development.

The report underscores the critical need for enhanced harmonization of laws, regulations, and standards across the African continent.

Within Ghana itself, inconsistent and overlapping regulations present a significant challenge to seamless trade facilitation.

The report also pointed to the detrimental impact of bureaucratic procedures, a lack of transparency, and inefficient coordination among government agencies.

These factors can significantly increase costs for businesses and hinder the smooth flow of goods and services within the AfCFTA framework.

The report concluded that while Ghana had taken steps to align its legal framework with AfCFTA obligations, overcoming these challenges was paramount to fully reap the benefits of this historic trade agreement.

Shatta Wale and I share similar traits, suffered same fate because we are non-conformists – Asamoah Gyan

0

Shatta Wale and Asamoah Gyan were classmates at the Seven Great Princess Academy Shatta Wale and Asamoah Gyan were classmates at the Seven Great Princess Academy

In his recent rants online, former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan opened up on the challenges he has faced due to his ‘realness’ and non-conformity while drawing comparisons to Shatta Wale, whom he believes has experienced a similar fate.

What began as a reaction to the Kantamanto fire incident took a personal turn when Asamoah Gyan began discussing how his genuine nature and refusal to conform have often made him a target of hatred and disrespect.

This led to him referencing Shatta Wale, stating that both of them share certain traits when it comes to dealing with hatred and staying true to themselves.

Buttressing his points further, he also mentioned that people, including some legends whom he has achieved more than, often take his humility for granted.

Asamoah Gyan said he usually keeps such people in check, even if it leads to being labeled disrespectful, a trait he believes Shatta Wale also possesses.

“I’ve achieved more than some of my colleagues, but when I see them, I respect them. Because I respect them, they try to disrespect me and take me for granted. But when they do, I quickly let them know that they cannot try that with me. I make them aware that I have achieved more than them, and it’s out of respect that I obey them,” Gyan explained.

He continued, “That is how Shatta Wale is. When Shatta Wale sees Reggie Rockstone and other legends, he will bow down. It doesn’t mean he is stupid. But when those legends step on his toes, he will insult them to remind them of their place. That guy, watch his life and watch mine. It’s a natural gift.”

Asamoah Gyan further emphasised his belief that he has always been “the chosen one,” receiving opportunities amidst millions of others.

“From my infancy, I’ve always been favoured and chosen for opportunities. You can ask around. It’s a gift that no one can take away from me. I always stand out. Out of thousands, and millions, I’m often the chosen one. That’s how Shatta Wale is. Sometimes, I get shocked by these personal traits,” he stated.

The former Black Stars captain then recounted how years ago, after the success of Shatta Wale’s “Bandana” track, the artiste was blacklisted by the music industry because he refused to conform and remained true to himself.

“When he released ‘Bandana,’ it blew up and he was happy. But fast forward a year or two, I saw Nii Armah (Shatta Wale) on the streets looking dirty and unkempt. According to the facts I gathered, at that time, Shatta Wale didn’t comply with the industry’s expectations. He is a real person. You can’t tell him what to do, so people in the industry wanted to control him. Because he didn’t allow that, they cut his music off from the mainstream media and sabotaged him to the point where he went broke,” Asamoah Gyan said.

He added, “He was from a rich home but decided to go on the streets. I was coming back from training when I saw him, and I parked and cried. My classmate, who after the ‘Bandana’ hit was looking like that, I was hurt. So, I stopped in front of Blue Lagoon, where he stayed with his friends, and interacted with him. I asked what happened, and he said, ‘Life happened.’”

‘Evil people!’ – Asamoah Gyan on Black Stars’ trophyless jinx

0

Former striker, Asamoah Gyan has attributed Black Stars’ lack of trophies to some unnamed evil individuals.

Having won the last trophy in 1982, the senior national team has since struggled despite playing in three finals in 1992, 2010 and 2015 of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

In an Instagram Live session on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Gyan the subject of his time with the Black Stars dominated the conversation.

“There are evil people in this country; That’s why we can’t win anything because of these people,” Gyan, who is the country’s all-time leading goal scorer said.

“They have tarnished Ghana’s reputation with dirt,’’ he added.

Asamoah Gyan featured at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cup in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.

Meanwhile, Ghana, who are four-time African champions will for the first time in two decades not participate in the 2025 AFCON which is scheduled to be hosted in Morocco later this year.

Dr. Kunbour should be the next Speaker; he’s a man of integrity, competence, and impartiality

0

Francis Doku, (left) and Dr Benjamin Kumbour

Francis Doku, a communications professional with over two decades of experience, has proposed former Attorney General Benjamin Kumbour as the Speaker for the yet-to-be-inaugurated ninth Parliament.

He argued that the former Member of Parliament has extensive experience in public service, law, and governance to be considered as the next Speaker.

To him, Dr. Kumbour’s experience makes him an exemplary candidate for the position of Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament…In an opinion piece, he appealed to the powers that be to consider him for the position of Speaker even if someone had already been selected.

He described Dr. Kumbour as a man of integrity, competence, and impartiality required for the role of Speaker.

He noted that appointing him as Speaker would also signal a commitment to professionalism, national unity, and the advancement of Ghana’s legislative journey.

“Dr. Benjamin Kumbuor embodies the qualities of integrity, competence, and impartiality required for the role of Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament. His wealth of experience in governance, law, and academia makes him uniquely equipped to preside over Parliament at a critical juncture in Ghana’s democratic journey. Appointing him as Speaker would signal a commitment to professionalism, national unity, and the advancement of Ghana’s legislative journey since the beginning of the 4th Republic.”

Case for Dr. Benjamin Kumbuor as Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament

I am writing this on 3rd January, and given that it’s only three days before the new parliament is inaugurated and the announcement of the person to be the Speaker is made, I am under no illusion that the decision would have been made already. However, even if the decision has been made and it is not this former Attorney General and MP, the decision-makers should reconsider.

In my humble view, Dr. Benjamin Bewa-Nyog Kumbuor’s extensive experience in public service, law, and governance makes him an exemplary candidate for the position of Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament. His distinguished career as a legal scholar, parliamentarian, and minister equips him with the skills and temperament necessary to lead and unify Ghana’s legislative body.

Here is my argument for the legal luminary:

Vast Parliamentary Experience and Legislative Expertise

Dr. Kumbuor served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Lawra-Nandom constituency for two terms (2001-2009). During this period, he contributed significantly to shaping Ghana’s legislative agenda, particularly in areas of constitutional and administrative law. His deep understanding of parliamentary procedures and his ability to build consensus across party lines make him well-suited to preside over debates and ensure fairness in parliamentary proceedings.

Having experienced the inner workings of Parliament firsthand, Dr. Kunbuor possesses the gravitas and procedural knowledge required to manage complex legislative processes and foster a cooperative environment among MPs.

Legal Acumen and Command of the Constitution

As a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Kunbuor played a pivotal role in defending the rule of law and upholding Ghana’s constitutional framework. His legal expertise ensures that parliamentary deliberations and decisions align with constitutional principles and Ghana’s democratic values. A Speaker with such a background would not only safeguard legislative integrity but also ensure that the laws passed withstand judicial scrutiny.

Moreover, Dr. Kumbuor’s academic contributions to Ghana’s legal landscape, including publications on taxation, human rights, and decentralization, underscore his deep intellectual engagement with the country’s legal and governance systems. This expertise will bring a nuanced and informed perspective to parliamentary debates, ensuring that legislation is well-crafted and reflective of the broader national interest.

Proven Leadership and Ministerial Competence

Dr. Kumbuor’s leadership across multiple ministries – Health, Interior, Justice, and Defence – demonstrates his versatility, administrative competence, and ability to manage complex portfolios. His leadership during sensitive times, including overseeing the Justice Ministry during high-profile legal battles and the Defence Ministry in times of regional insecurity, highlights his capacity to navigate challenging situations with calmness and resolve.

His ability to manage diverse portfolios reflects qualities of diplomacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution – essential skills for a Speaker who must mediate between opposing parties and guide Parliament through contentious debates.

Commitment to National Unity and Democratic Principles

Dr. Kumbuor’s reputation as a principled leader, known for prioritising national interest over partisanship, makes him a unifying figure. In an era where parliamentary politics in Ghana has become highly polarised, his leadership style can help bridge divides and ensure that Parliament functions as a bastion of democratic governance, rather than a theater for party rivalry.

His commitment to human rights and decentralisation reflects a broader vision for inclusive governance, making him an advocate for marginalised voices. As Speaker, I believe he would ensure that Parliament remains responsive to the needs of all Ghanaians, fostering greater trust in democratic institutions.

International Recognition and Scholarly Credentials

Dr. Kumbuor’s academic pedigree, including his PhD in Law and Development from the University of Warwick, and his recognition as a Chevening Scholar, provide him with international credibility. His global exposure enhances his ability to represent Ghana’s Parliament on the international stage, strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and fostering partnerships with legislative bodies worldwide.

His scholarly contributions reflect a rare blend of academic rigour and practical governance experience, positioning him as a thought leader capable of guiding Parliament through legislative innovation and institutional reform.

Conclusion

Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor embodies the qualities of integrity, competence, and impartiality required for the role of Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament. His wealth of experience in governance, law, and academia makes him uniquely equipped to preside over Parliament at a critical juncture in Ghana’s democratic journey. Appointing him as Speaker would signal a commitment to professionalism, national unity, and the advancement of Ghana’s legislative journey since the beginning of the 4th Republic.

Akufo-Addo’s aide-de-camp collapses during State of the Nation Address

0

During President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, January 3, 2025, a concerning incident occurred when one of the President’s personal bodyguards, Colonel Isaac Amponsah, collapsed while standing guard in the chamber.

The collapse occurred shortly after President Akufo-Addo began delivering his speech, which highlighted the government’s achievements and vision for the country.

Col. Amponsah, who has served as a dedicated member of the President’s security detail for many years, suddenly lost his footing and collapsed without warning.

The sudden nature of the collapse prompted immediate attention from Parliament’s medical team, who rushed to the scene to assist.

Col. Amponsah was promptly attended to and, after receiving initial first aid, was quickly transported to a nearby facility for further medical evaluation.

The President, visibly concerned by the incident, paused his address briefly to ensure that Col. Amponsah received the necessary attention.

The State of the Nation Address, though briefly interrupted by the incident, continued without further disruptions. The event remains significant as President Akufo-Addo’s final address to Parliament before his term ends, highlighting Ghana’s progress during his leadership and the country’s future trajectory.

Further updates on Col. Amponsah’s health are expected in the coming hours.

‘Ghana is not broke’ – Akufo-Addo insists

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has strongly refuted claims that Ghana is currently battling financial crisis.

Speaking during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on January 3, 2024, Akufo-Addo emphatically stated that Ghana is not broke, contrary to the popular speculation.

He attributed the claims of the country’s alleged indebtedness to propagandists aiming to mislead the public.

“Mr. Speaker, the country is not broke, as some propagandists want us to believe. We are handing over a country with gross international reserves of almost $8 billion. This is more than the $6.2 billion in gross international reserves my administration inherited in 2017,” he declared.

As the President spoke, members of the opposition began making noise in the Parliament chamber, expressing disagreement with his statement.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin then interjected, stating, “Your statistics may differ, but that doesn’t mean he is misleading the House.”

Akufo-Addo responded, “The noise will not shutter the statistics and I intend to put the statistics on the record of hindsight no matter the amount of noise,” he said.

The State of the Nation Address (SONA), as mandated by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, provides the outgoing President with the opportunity to report on the nation’s status before leaving office.

This event also marks the final session of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic, which is set to be dissolved on Monday, January 6, 2025.

Colonel Isaac Amponsah, the personal security guard cum Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, collapsed in Parliament.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday, January 3, 2025, during the President’s final State of the Nation Address.

Colonel Amponsah, who has been serving as the President’s ADC since February 2023, reportedly suffered a medical emergency while the President was addressing Parliament.

In February 2023, Colonel Amponsah replaced Major-General Bismark Onuonah, who was reassigned to the Army Headquarters as Commandant of the Training and Doctrine Command at the Ghana Armed Forces.

Prior to his appointment as ADC, Colonel Amponsah served as the Chief Instructor at the Military Training Academy and was stationed at the Defence Intelligence Unit at General Headquarters.

Colonel Amponsah, who had previously served in various senior positions, had been promoted to the rank of Colonel before his appointment as ADC to the President.

GhanaWeb can confirm that Colonel Amponsah later regained consciousness and was seen being escorted out of the chamber.

Further details surrounding the medical incident are yet to be released.

Drunken Zambian policeman freed 13 suspects to celebrate New Year

0

A drunken police officer in Zambia freed 13 suspects from custody so that they could go and celebrate the new year, officials say.

Detective inspector Titus Phiri was arrested after releasing the suspects from Leonard Cheelo police station in the capital, Lusaka, before running away himself.

The 13 detainees were accused of crimes such as assault, robbery and burglary.

They are all currently on the run and a manhunt has been launched to find them.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said that Mr Phiri, “in a state of intoxication, forcibly seized cell keys” from constable Serah Banda on New Year’s Eve.

“Subsequently, detective inspector Phiri unlocked both the male and female cells and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were free to cross over into the new year,” he said.

“Out of the 15 suspects in custody, 13 escaped. Following the incident, the officer fled the scene.”

Mr Phiri has not yet commented on the allegations.

Reacting to the incident, former presidential spokesperson and lawyer Dickson Jere wrote on Facebook: “I keep laughing each time I picture the scenario – comical! But then, I remembered a similar incident in 1997.”

On New Year’s Eve in 1997, the late, controversial High Court Judge Kabazo Chanda ordered the release of 53 suspects, some of whom were deemed dangerous by the police.

Mr Chanda was annoyed that the suspects had been arrested as long ago as 1992, but had not yet appeared in court.

“Justice delayed, is justice denied,” he said.

Mr Happiness Urges Black Sherif to Disregard Doom Prophesies About His Career

  • Prophet Fire Ogya, a popular Ghanaian man of God, has prophesied doom on the career of Ghanaian musician, Black Sherif
  • According to the prophet, Black Sherif’s career would take a huge dip as he would struggle to record another hit song

The controversial prophet suggested that the young artist would lose his shine and be forgotten forever in the Ghanaian entertainment scene.

“Evil forces have replaced his tongue, which produces excellent songs, with another one which will kiss his career, and he can no longer produce hit songs,” he reportedly claimed.

“Black Sherif can never and will never make any hit song again, he’s going to be forgotten forever like he never existed,” he added.

Prophet Fire Ogya made these remarks would delivering his December 31, 2024 watch night message to Ghanaians.

Reacting to this, however, Mr. Happiness, a Ghanaian-born man who recently became a Dutch citizen, advised Black Sherif to ignore the prophecy and stay focused, as the words of the prophet are not those of God.

The Dutch citizen, also known as Kofi Gabs, said that when the “Kwaku the Traveller” hitmaker was struggling in the trenches to record his song, no Ghanaian pastor had prophesied that he would become a household name in the music industry.

He stated that since they could not predict his rise in the Ghanaian music industry, they are not in any position now to prophesy what would happen to him in the future.

“When you were in Konongo Zongo struggling, no one said that God had revealed to them that you would make hit songs. This should tell you that it’s God that blessed you. So don’t allow anyone whom God has not spoken to, to come and tell you that God has revealed to him that you won’t no longer get a hit song. Don’t be disturbed by these doom prophesies,” he said.

Below is the video of Mr Happiness advising Black Sherif

Black Sherif’s rise in the music industry

Black Sherif, known in private circles as Mohammed Ismail Sherif, made his official debut appearance in the Ghanaian music industry in 2021 with his “First Sermon” song in May, which was a massive hit.

Following this success, the Konongo-born musician released the “Second Sermon” track in July, which equally enjoyed massive airplay across digital and mainstream media platforms.

Arguably, Black Sherif’s biggest breakthrough came in March 2022 following the release of the viral song “Kwaku the Traveller”

In 2023, Black Sherif won five awards at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, including the coveted Artist of The Year category.

OdumoduBlvk prays for Black Sherif

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Nigerian rapper, OdumoduBlvk was captured in a viral video praying for Black Sherif.

The Nigerian rapper has been a close friend of the Ghanaian musician, teaming up to produce the Wotowoto Seasoning hit song in 2023.

Black Sherif is reportedly preparing to release a new album dubbed “Iron Boy” this year.

A tragic accident involving three vehicles at Gomoa Otsew on the Apam-Winneba highway in the Central Region has left two people feared dead and several others injured.

The crash occurred on Thursday evening, and emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue the victims.

DOII Anthony Kwesi Rhule, the Apam District Fire Service Commander, who led the rescue operation, stated that it took firemen several hours to free one of the victims who had become trapped in their vehicle. According to initial reports, a Honda Pilot 4×4 with the registration number DE 3440-13, traveling from Apam towards Winneba, collided head-on with a sprinter minibus with the registration number GW 5064-24. The collision caused the Honda Pilot to spin and crash into a Kia truck (GW 8308-21), which was loaded with pineapples and heading in the opposite direction towards Winneba.

All victims were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical treatment. Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speeding and improper overtaking by the driver of the Honda Pilot may have been factors contributing to the crash.

The authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident, while the community mourns the loss of lives and hopes for the swift recovery of the injured.

Marwake triggers controversy for shooting music video at burnt Kantamanto market

0

As Ghanaian artiste Marwake’s latest single, “Change,” gains traction for its uplifting message of resilience and hope, the musician has found himself embroiled in controversy over his decision to shoot the music video at the recently burned-out Kantamanto Market.

This move has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising his creativity and others calling it insensitive.

The incident

A few hours after the devastating fire that gutted parts of the Kantamanto Market on January 2, 2025—leaving many traders counting their losses—Marwake and his team were spotted among the debris, shooting scenes for the music video of “Change.” The fire, which is currently under investigation by the police, has raised concerns about the safety of the affected area and the plight of traders who have lost their investments.

Snippets of the video shoot, shared on social media, show Marwake and his crew navigating the charred remnants of the market. The footage quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from netizens and industry stakeholders.

Criticism

Critics have labelled the artiste’s actions as opportunistic and lacking empathy. “This is a place where people’s livelihoods have been destroyed. Using their pain for personal gain is deeply insensitive,” one X user stated.

Others questioned the timing and intent behind the shoot, arguing that it overshadowed the plight of the affected traders. “…focus on assisting the victims rather than turning their misfortune into a backdrop for your career,” another critic added.

Defending the decision

However, some fans and commentators have come to Marwake’s defense, highlighting the symbolism in his choice of location. They argue that the market’s ruins align with the themes of “Change,” which centers on overcoming adversity and rebuilding from the ground up.

“Art is about reflecting the realities of life, even the harsh ones. By shooting there, he is shining a light on the resilience of those affected,” a supporter commented.

Others see his actions as a bold statement, emphasizing the idea of finding opportunity in difficulty. “Even if he capitalized on the disaster, there’s nothing wrong with that. Artistes often draw inspiration from real-life events,” another defender noted.

Marwake’s next step?

As the debate continues, Marwake has yet to publicly address the criticism or explain his decision to film at the market. Whether this controversy will affect the reception of “Change” remains to be seen.

For now, the music video—capturing scenes of hope amidst destruction—is set to become as much a topic of discussion as the song itself. Marwake’s message of resilience is now intertwined with a broader conversation about sensitivity, artistry, and ethics in creative expression.

‘A woman saw him before the fire started’

Ekow Vincent Assafuah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development Ekow Vincent Assafuah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development

A man identified as Quaicoo, widely known as Oboy, has been pointed to by Deputy Minister Ekow Vincent Assafuah as the potential mastermind behind the devastating blaze.

Speaking passionately on Asempa FM, the deputy minister suggested that the act was not random but deeply political, fueled by tensions from the recently concluded general elections.

“Anybody who knows Kantamanto will tell you that these are people who live as one community,” Mr. Assafuah remarked, lamenting how the market’s unity had been disrupted.

He revealed that Quaicoo, a polling agent for the opposition NDC, had recently fallen on hard times following a divorce that left him financially dependent on market associates.

“But due to politicking…” he added, leaving the implications to linger.

Eyewitness accounts further stirred the controversy. “A woman at Kantamanto told me that on Wednesday around 11 p.m., she saw this man passing by, and not long after, the market was in flames,” Assafuah disclosed.

“For the purposes of protecting the identity of the person who provided this information, I will keep their name confidential.”

These allegations have rippled through the market community, adding to the anguish of traders who have lost everything.

For many, the fire’s cause is secondary to the immediate need for recovery. Yet, the narrative of sabotage has left a bitter aftertaste.

Traders urged to keep faith after Kantamanto fire tragedy

Many traders have lost their entire capital and wares play videoMany traders have lost their entire capital and wares

Richard Amo Yartey, Director of the Inspectorate at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has urged traders affected by the fire outbreak at Kantamanto to remain hopeful as the organisation works to assist them in rebuilding their lives.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to the site on Thursday, Mr. Yartey expressed sympathy to the traders, emphasising the need for hope in these trying times.

“It’s quite unfortunate that this happened at a time when we should be celebrating the New Year, but this is not the end of life. We are doing our best to support those affected and ensure they get back on their feet,” he said.

The fire, which engulfed a large section of the Kantamanto Market on Wednesday evening, destroyed hundreds of shops and property worth millions of Ghana cedis, leaving the affected traders devastated.

Many traders were seen salvaging what they could from the debris, with some attributing the outbreak to suspected arson.

Mr. Yartey disclosed that NADMO had initiated steps to assess the extent of the damage and register the affected persons to determine their individual needs.

He assured traders of transparency in the process, noting that the leadership of the market’s Traders Association was involved.

“We are setting up a desk for registration and assessment. Once we gather all the necessary information, we will develop an action plan to help them recover. While it’s difficult to provide timelines, we have already started work,” he added.

At the market, some traders were seen trying to extinguish pockets of flames that continued to smolder, while others counted their losses.

Mr. Kwabena Charles, a dealer in second-hand shoes, described the ordeal he faced after learning about the fire.

“I was home in Abeka when one of my workers called and told me to come to the market quickly. By the time I arrived at 3:00 a.m., everything had been burnt.”

“We tried to save what we could, but it was impossible. I’ve lost goods worth nearly 500 million Ghana cedis. The fire service didn’t do anything to help; don’t even mention them,” he said angrily.

The traders, many of whom have lost their entire capital, are appealing to the government and benevolent organisations for support to rebuild their businesses.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the inferno, NADMO has called for calm and pledged to ensure that help reaches those in need.

Meanwhile, investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Fire outbreaks at the Kantamanto market have become an annual ritual.

Nora Hauptle leaves as Black Queens head coach after contract expiration

Swiss football manager Nora Hauptle has left the country after her contract as head coach of the Black Queens expired.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the appointment of the Swiss as the manager of the Ghana women’s national team, replacing Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo who had been in charge since 2019.

However, Hauptle has left her role after deciding not to renew her contract with the GFA, which expired on December 31, 2024.

During her tenure, Hauptle qualified the Black Queens for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament which is scheduled to be hosted in Morocco later this year.

However, she lost out on qualifying the Queens for the Olympic Games after losing to Zambia’s Cooper Queens.

As earlier reported by Ghanasoccernet.com, Nora Hauptle is expected to be appointed as the head coach for Zambia’s Cooper Queens. She is expected to sign a two-year deal with a monthly salary of $7,000.

Her appointment was approved by the Executive Committee of the Zambia FA on 21 December.

Meanwhile, the Ghana FA is looking for a replacement for Nora Hauptle for the 2025 WAFCON.

"We Did Well in Handling the Economy' – Freddie Blay Surprised by NPP’s 2024 Defeat

0

Freddie Blay, the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described the party’s loss in the 2024 elections as unexpected, especially given the economic progress achieved under the Akufo-Addo-led administration as reported by Ghana Web on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

In a recent interview on GHOne TV, Blay highlighted the efforts of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government in steering the country through economic challenges, emphasizing their strides in governance and maintaining peace.

He stated that these achievements should have been enough to secure the NPP another term in office.

“This defeat is surprising,” Blay said, reflecting on the election outcome. “Despite the challenges, the government made significant progress in economic recovery and governance.”

The 2024 elections delivered a landslide victory for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in both presidential and parliamentary races, a result that has raised questions within the NPP.

While some party members have pointed to governance failures as the cause of the loss, Blay firmly believes the administration did its best under the circumstances.

He acknowledged the tough economic climate inherited by the Akufo-Addo government and stated their efforts to rebuild the economy.

“We faced significant hurdles, but we made remarkable progress. We truly believed the results would favor us,” Blay stated.

The defeat has sparked intense reflection within the NPP as they grapple with the reasons behind the unexpected outcome and look to rebuild for future elections.

The Committee is expected to engage all party stakeholders and the public and submit a comprehensive report to the Council within three months.

The report would set the stage for the Party’s reflection, rebuilding, and restructuring efforts to bounce back stronger in future elections, the statement said.

Afenyo-Markin’s selection as Minority Leader sends a positive signal

0

Samuel Obeng, the Executive Director of the Parliamentary Network for Africa, has praised the selection of Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the Minority Leader for the 9th Parliament, calling it a positive signal for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it moves forward.

This follows the decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP to appoint the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, as the Minority Leader.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Obeng underscored the importance of having a seasoned and capable leader at the head of the minority caucus.

He emphasized that Afenyo-Markin’s extensive experience, particularly during his time in the opposition, has equipped him with the skills needed to provide effective oversight and offer constructive alternatives to the government.

“It is a wise decision by the party…you may have to put your best foot forward. Experience counts. This is not the time for experimenting.

“So, they decided to opt for the people who have been doing this work already. As a majority or a minority leader, you have to be firm on the parliamentary select committee and other committees.

“Also, the selection of people who are supposed to serve on the various committees. So, the experience that comes with having served on these teams over the last couple of months helps to make sure that they will hit the ground running right from the beginning,” he stated.

The NPP also made the following selection in its leadership for the 9th parliament.

  • Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader.
  • Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader.

‘Squid Game’ fans explain real reason Thanos switches to English in Season 2 of hit series

0

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Thanos is one of the most polarizing characters in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2. Some viewers are fond of him, while others find him unbearable, and many have been puzzled by his use of English.

Among the contestants, he stands out as the most eccentric; with his purple hair, Infinity Stone-inspired nail paint, and carefree attitude, he often appears high on whatever substances are hidden in his necklace, even as others tremble during the brutal games.

A distinctive feature of Thanos is his switching between Korean and (often amusing) English. For instance, when he meets Player 125, he says, “What’s up, nice to meet you my brother, welcome to the Thanos world.” Additionally, some of his rap lyrics incorporate English words.

In the series, Thanos, also known as Player 230, is portrayed by Choi Seung Hyun, known professionally as T.O.P.

Why does Thanos speak in English in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2?

According to Dexerto, Thanos often speaks in English in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 because it’s a common practice among Korean rappers and K-hip-hop artists to incorporate English lyrics into their music.

For instance, South Korean rapper Gaeko’s ‘Smoke’ begins with the line, “Light it up,” and includes other English phrases like, “I’m a south side baddie, collect all these veggies” and “Man, I can’t curse to you ’cause you already die for it.”

Another rapper Loopy’s track ‘Rrrr’ also features a long section where he raps, “Turn off the f**kin’ phone, now we get it” repeatedly. RM (formerly Rap Monster) is another example, as he raps in English in songs like ‘Wild Flower’, which opens with “Flower field, that’s where I’m at,” and ‘Come Back to Me’, which is almost entirely in English.

In K-dramas, it’s also common for characters to occasionally switch to English. For example, in Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’, one character says, “I’m deadly serious.”

Fans on Reddit have also explained why Thanos switches to English in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2.

A user explained, “Also…not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but TOP (the actor—from the Kpop group Bigbang) is fluent in English. They probably wanted to humor a western audience since Bigbang already has a pretty big international fan base.”

Another added, “A rapping thing. Non native English speaking rappers do it a lot.”

One commentator remarked, “I figured it’s similar to American weebs dropping random phrases they learn from anime.”

A person stated, “In certain countries (like mine) speaking in English shows that you’re more cultured, educated and upper class. And people who can’t speak English tend to look at you in a different more awe light if you do. Since Thanos was a LOT of ego, he was probably speaking in English like that to show off his superiority.”

Someone else chimed in, “Yeah I understand that people do that but in the context of the show he was specifically the only one who did. I was wondering if it’s something Korean rappers are known for doing.”

Tullow oil surges after Ghana tax arbitration case win By Investing.com

0

Inveting.com — Shares of Tullow Oil (LON:) jumped over 10% on Friday following a favorable outcome in a crucial arbitration case, providing the company with a financial and strategic advantage.

In a stock exchange filing, Tullow disclosed the favorable decision from the International Chamber of Commerce regarding a long-running tax dispute with the Ghana Revenue Authority.

The case focused on the applicability of the Branch Profit Remittance Tax to Tullow’s operations under the Deepwater Tano and West Cape Three Points Petroleum Agreements, which include the Jubilee and TEN fields off the coast of Ghana.

The ICC tribunal ruled that Tullow Ghana, a subsidiary of Tullow Oil, is not liable for the $320 million BPRT assessment that had been issued by the GRA.

The tribunal determined that BPRT does not apply to Tullow’s operations in Ghana, as it falls outside the tax framework stipulated in the Petroleum Agreements between Tullow and the government.

This ruling effectively eliminates any financial obligation tied to the disputed tax, securing Tullow Ghana from future BPRT claims related to its operations in the region.

“Tullow continues to engage with the Government of Ghana on two further disputed tax claims, which were referred to the ICC in February 2023, with the aim of resolving these disputes on a mutually acceptable basis,” the company said in a statement.

The company’s chief executive, Rahul Dhir, expressed hope for productive talks with the government of Ghana to settle the remaining claims, emphasizing the importance of optimizing value from the Jubilee and TEN fields.

Former Malian PM Choguel Maïga accused of embezzlement

0

A Former Prime Minister of Mali Choguel Maïga has been accused of embezzlement by the body that is responsible for controlling public spending.

A report by the authority points to numerous instances of embezzlement, involving significant sums of money. The former leader is said to have covered up some of the incidents or benefitted from them.

According to the auditor, there was ‘’undue expenditure on staff’’ over the entire 2020-2023 period. This includes phone subscriptions amounting to nearly €20,000, and equipment such as WiFi and computers that were meant for use in schools.

Maiga served as Prime Minister from June 2021 until November 2024, when he was dismissed by junta chief Col Assimi Goïta. The move came after criticism by Maïga of the junta’s lack of clearness about a once-promised transition back to democracy.

He has so far refused to comment on the embezzlement allegations.

Maiga has previously commented on the report when the auditor began its research, insisting that he had a ‘clear conscience’.

CPA calls out alleged biased actions against business leaders

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Jan 03, GNA – The Committee for Public Accountability (CPA), has condemned the alleged biased actions of Mr Raymond Archer and his team, particularly against Mr Daniel McKorley and other business leaders.

The CPA emphasised the importance of professionalism and fairness, cautioning against using the Oral Team to settle personal scores.

At a Press Conference in Accra, Mr Collins Amankwa, the Leader and Executive Chairperson of CPA, also addressed the alleged recent claim by the Ghana Airport Company (GACL) that McDan Aviation Company owed the Company $3 million.

“…Evidence suggests that this claim is exaggerated, with the actual amount due being around $600,000,” he said.

The CPA therefore questioned the motives behind GACL’s actions, wondering why the Company would want to undermine a successful Ghanaian business.

“This move has resulted in the shutdown of the private terminal, which is crucial for upcoming events, including the president-elect’s inauguration,” Mr Amankwa said.

According to the CPA, McDan Aviation, had allegedly made significant payments in the past and had plans to resume further payments in January 2025 adding that “The company also refuted claims that it owes GACL $3 million for the terminal, describing such reports as erroneous,” he said.

Mr Amankwa told the Press that CPA was ready to defend the interests of Ghanaian citizens, especially the business community, and would take legal action if necessary.

He also emphasised the state’s responsibility to support and protect businesses, allowing them to thrive for the collective benefit of society.

The management of GACL has shut down the McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal due to an alleged outstanding debt of over $3 million.

The debt, which included land leases, rentals, and terminal charges accumulated over a period, was allegedly not cleared despite being given until Christmas to settle the amount.

This marks the second time McDan Aviation has faced such a shutdown.

In February 2022, GACL indefinitely barred McDan Aviation from operating its private jet services at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) following operational breaches.

This move came after McDan launched its private jet services at the airport despite not meeting the required terms and conditions set by the airport authorities.

Ayew missed the Foxes’ 2-0 defeat to Manchester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, December 29, 2024, due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

The 33-year-old received his fifth yellow card of the season in Leicester’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Boxing Day, after scoring to put his side ahead.
