Oro Oil Ghana partners Nigerian investors to revive oil palm production

0

Ghana’s oil palm industry is set for a major boost as Oro Oil Ghana has entered into a 10-year partnership with Nigerian investors to enhance production, market expansion, and technological advancement.

The collaboration aims to reduce reliance on traditional methods and improve the income of smallholder farmers.

Beyond trade, the agreement will bring Nigerian investment, expertise, and machinery to Ghana’s oil palm sector. The country boasts over 10,000 hectares of cultivable land, an affordable workforce, and access to a large market through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Ghana’s oil palm production has suffered due to neglect and inadequate investment, leading to a decline in exports. The Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana reports that the country’s export volume for 2024 dropped by over 50%.

The sector’s decline is attributed to a lack of government support, poor planting materials, and technological gaps.

For Nigeria, where palm oil consumption stands at approximately three million metric tons annually, the partnership with Oro Oil Ghana aligns with its growth and export-driven strategy.

The collaboration will focus on international best practices to attract investors and boost market confidence. Oro Oil Ghana remains Ghana’s largest exporter of palm oil to Nigeria.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue 2025 in Accra, Oro Oil Ghana CEO, Maxwell Commey emphasized the significance of the partnership. He noted that Ghana currently has about 100,000 hectares of planted oil palm, and the new deal will mobilize investors and resources from Nigeria.

“This will create direct employment for 40,000 people, drive industrialization, and facilitate knowledge transfer,” Mr. Commey stated.

He also reiterated the need for the government to establish a land bank to improve production and address a supply gap of approximately 250,000 metric tons.

“This partnership is a confidence booster for Oro Oil Ghana and the economy at large. We urge the government to step up support to help harness the full potential of the sector within the local and regional markets,” he added.

The two-day National Economic Dialogue, chaired by President John Mahama, is focused on the theme “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together.”

Ramadan Fasting Starts –

0

Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu

Ghanaian Muslims and their counterparts around the world last Saturday commenced the month-long period of fasting.

The dawn to dusk period of fasting is one of the pillars of the faith and commences on the first day of the lunar-based Islamic calendar of Ramadan. Muslims healthy enough to undertake the religious rites must abstain from food and bodily pleasures from dawn to dusk for the period.

Those who for health reasons are unable to fast for some days must fast for the days that they could not do so at the end of the month.  Others who cannot fast at all because of permanent health conditions must feed a prescribed number of persons daily for the period of the month-long religious exercise.

A special committee charged with managing the sighting and announcement of the crescent of the moon with the authority of the National Chief Imam met at the National Mosque to deliberate on the subject and issued a statement calling on all Muslims who spot the crescent to inform the Office of the National Imam for subsequent announcement on national television.

With the advantage of social media however, those who spotted the crescent around the world put out the information even before the National Chief Imam did.

Besides the abstinence from food and water, Muslims are enjoined to engage in acts of charity and supplications.

In the coming days, the National Chief Imam will commence a period of commentaries of the Holy Quran, the closure of which is celebratory

Popular Ghanaian musician cum businessman, Nhyiraba Kojo, has debunked reports that he had been arrested by the police in the United States.

He has threatened to take legal action against people parading such claims.

One would recall that some media platforms shared pictures of Nhyiraba Kojo next to a police vehicle, alleging that he had been picked over fraud-related charges pertaining to Hajia-4Reall’s case.

However, speaking to blogger Bessah GH upon his return to Ghana at the Kotoka International Airport on March 4, 2025, Nhyiraba Kojo denied being arrested and explained the story behind the picture circulating on social media.

“I have no issue with the police, Interpol or the FBI. I went to the US for business and I have family there I went to visit. I’m going to take legal action. It’s not true,” he stated.

He added, “They enjoy saying things that aren’t true. So I’m going to take legal action this time around.”

Explaining the picture that captured someone like him next to a police vehicle, Nhyiraba Kojo clarified, “That picture of me is the source of the problem. What happened was that I had parked in between two police vehicles and was navigating to my vehicle.

“If you saw the picture, there were no officers present or anything. The vehicle was just there. People saw that picture and just ran with it.”

Nhyiraba Kojo has been accused multiple times of being involved in fraudulent activities by individuals who have been actively probing the source of his wealth.

Mahama spent time engaging in propaganda in his SONA – Minority

The Minority accused the president of engaging in propaganda instead of providing solutions The Minority accused the president of engaging in propaganda instead of providing solutions

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for failing to outline concrete strategies to fix the country’s struggling economy during his recent State of Nation Address; rather, he was engaged in propaganda.

Addressing a press conference on March 3, the former Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, accused the President of engaging in propaganda instead of providing solutions to Ghana’s economic crisis.

“Rather than providing clear strategies to fix the economy, the President spent a significant portion of his address engaging in propaganda and blaming others for his administration’s shortcomings,” he stated.

The former finance minister argued that Mahama’s past leadership had led to widespread economic difficulties, including the collapse of businesses, rising unemployment, and excessive borrowing.

He added that instead of acknowledging these issues and taking responsibility, the President was attempting to rewrite the narrative to shift blame.

“We all remember how his past leadership led to the collapse of businesses, high unemployment, and excessive borrowing. Now, instead of taking responsibility, he is trying to create a narrative that shifts the blame elsewhere,” Dr. Amin Adam said.

He further urged the government to focus on tangible actions rather than rhetoric, insisting that Ghanaians need real solutions to their economic challenges. “Ghanaians need action, not words. The President must stop the propaganda and start delivering on his promises,” he emphasised.

Video of drunk Jack Grealish leaving the club generates conversation on social media

Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish

A video of England and Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish leaving a a pub completely drunk has generated discussions among the community on social media.

According to a publication by the Daily Mail, Grealish was seen leaving a pub in Newcastle in the late hours of Sunday, March 2, 2025.

Grealish visited the pub after Manchester City’s victory over Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup.

A completely intoxicated Grealish was seen in a viral video leaving the spot while holding a glass bottle.

Grealish, dressed in a grey hoodie and ripped jeans, appeared to be accompanied by a friend in a pink sweatshirt as they headed to their car.

Grealish’s affection for parties is well-documented, as he has on numerous occasions been spotted being drunk.

Grealish is being eased into the Manchester City starting team after struggling last season.

In an earlier interview, Grealish, who has been rumored to be on his way out of the club, described 2024 as one of his worst years.

“Last year, the whole year itself, it was weird because my little daughter was born, but apart from that, it was one of the most difficult years—probably the most difficult year of my life for many reasons, on and off the pitch,” Grealish said.

“I found it difficult. But it’s a new year, a sort of fresh start, and hopefully, I can kick on from here. I feel like in my last few games that I have played—against Palace, Salford, and Orient—I am trying to be involved more in the goals and assists.

“Listen, I want to start playing more often and have that rhythm—the way I was a couple of years ago when I was playing a lot of games in a row,” Grealish added.

“I do find it difficult at times to come in and out of games, not really playing. Hopefully, I can keep training well and play a few more games.”

Stop rushing to SC, it weakens Parliament

0

The Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi, has urged members of Parliament to stop “walking” to the Supreme Court (SC) over parliamentary matters without exhausting internal mechanism to resolve differences.

He said rushing to the apex court only invited it to open up Parliament, weakening its ability to hold the Executive and its own members accountable.

Besides, he said whenever the House also fought against itself, such division undermined its power to assert its authority.

“If Parliament, therefore, fails to deal with internal conflicts, it risks institutional fragmentation that will destroy the institution,” he warned.

Danger

Speaking at a three-day orientation training for the new members of the Ninth Parliament on Saturday in Ho, Prof. Abotsi expressed fears that if Parliament continued to be fighting itself, it was the Executive that would benefit.

“We seem to be seeing too many instances of brinkmanship, fighting to the gallery to the core and I fear that if this is not quickly arrested, the Ninth Parliament may be in some kind of danger,” he said.

The event brought together experts and senior legislators with hands-on experience to take legislators and staff of Parliament Service Board through various topics to build their capacity in parliamentary procedures.

Some of the topics were the rights of the majority and minority, conflict management and consensus building, responsibilities of members of Parliament, how to be an effective legislature: mastering the rules of procedure, skills in advocacy, lobbying and negotiation for a legislator as well as monitoring and evaluation of public services and capital.

Conflict resolution

The law professor said Parliament was the strongest of all the institutions but over the years it had been weak.

He said the Legislature should technically appoint everybody from ministers, top level approval and members of the Judiciary.

However, he said due to the reality of political parties remotely controlling Parliament, Parliament had been weak.

To rectify such situation, he said it was important for the House to recognise the authority of the Speaker who was given the authority under Order 129 to suspend MPs who misconducted themselves in the House.

“How do you handle a situation however if one MP walks to the Supreme Court and asks the court to look into something?” he asked.

He said the principle was that the apex court, very often, did not easily cut their own jurisdiction short but if they were often invited, “they would look at the matter”.

“Imagine a minister goes to court to sue the President, asking the court to declare an action of the President wrong and you will see how absurd you will look.”

“When a member of Parliament walks to court, what they have done is that they have asked the court to open up Parliament,” he said.

66 galamseyers arrested in joint operation at Tilli forest reserve

0

About 66 illegal miners have been arrested by a joint military and police operation at the Tilli forest in the Upper East Region.

The operation, which took place on Tuesday, March 4th, 2024, was a swoop to end the activities of illegal mining in that forest. The suspects include two Burkinabes, 26 Togolese, and 38 Ghanaians.

The Tilli forest is one of the biggest forest reserves in the Upper East Region, where some of these illegal miners are engaging in illegal mining activities, deteriorating the forest ecosystem.

The forest also contains wildlife species like elephants and other organisms that depend on the forest ecosystem for survival.

Speaking to the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, after the arrest, he stated that the operation was motivated by the paramount chief of Sakote, who called on him to help curb the situation in that area.

Ghana must stop excessive reliance on foreign loans – EIU report

0

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Africa Economic Outlook 2025 has advised Ghana to find alternative funding solutions to avoid excess reliance on foreign loans.

According to the report, “the worst of the region’s sovereign debt pressures appear to be over, but external debt servicing burdens remain high”.

This, the EIU warned presents a critical challenge for African countries like Ghana, calling for the need to improve domestic revenue collection.

The report said Ghana is one of the many African nations grappling with macroeconomic stability challenges.

“With nearly half of the continent’s countries still under IMF programs in 2025, fiscal discipline and sustainable financing have become even more critical”.

The EIU observed that high external debt servicing costs continue to strain national budgets, making it imperative for Ghana to explore internal financing mechanisms.

The EIU report noted that “Africa will be home to most of the world’s fastest-growing economies in 2025, with increased investment expected in sectors such as renewable energy, ICT, and logistics. This presents a significant opportunity for Ghana. The nation can strategically position itself to benefit from these trends while ensuring infrastructure investments align with national development priorities”.

Some economic analysts argue that Ghana’s infrastructure financing model should be tailored to long-term economic sustainability, rather than short-term debt accumulation. This approach is essential to avoid the pitfalls of unsustainable debt burdens.

However, disruptive regional rivalries and lingering social issues remain a concern for economic stability, as highlighted in the EIU report.

“Economic performance varies considerably across the continent, and intense global geopolitics will create a difficult backdrop and present tough decisions for African governments. Ghana must navigate these complexities while implementing policies that ensure sustainable infrastructure development”.

The EIU again warned that with external debt and servicing burdens remaining high across Africa, Ghana must avoid the pitfalls of over-reliance on external borrowing.

“The worst of the region’s sovereign debt pressures appear to be over, but economic performance varies considerably. Therefore, Ghana must implement policies that prioritize sustainable financing mechanisms to ensure resilience against global economic shocks”.

While challenges such as inflation, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions persist, Ghana has the potential to chart a new course in infrastructure financing. Experts believe that a well-coordinated strategy involving pension funds, public-private partnerships (PPPs), and policy reforms will drive the country’s infrastructure growth in a sustainable manner.

According to the EIU, “attracting more inward foreign direct investment has proved difficult for many African states in recent years, but foreign investment targeting Africa is expected to edge higher in 2025”.

It added that Ghana must strategically position itself to capitalize on this trend by creating an attractive investment climate for both domestic and international investors.

BoG Suspends Gold For Oil Programme

0

Dr. Johnson Asiama

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has announced the suspension of the country’s Gold-for-Oil programme due to unspecified policy and operational challenges.

The decision marks a significant shift in Ghana’s economic strategy, as the initiative was originally designed to reduce reliance on foreign exchange for fuel imports and stabilise domestic fuel prices.

Dr. Asiama in an interview with Bloomberg, disclosed that the programme had incurred financial losses, necessitating its temporary suspension.

“We have had to incur some losses on that, so we have put some suspension on the trade,” he stated. While he did not elaborate on the specific challenges faced, the suspension reflects broader economic adjustments under the new administration.

Despite the halt, Dr. Asiama expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic prospects, particularly regarding the stability of the cedi following last year’s volatility.

He assured that the central bank would uphold a prudent monetary policy to support fiscal discipline.

“We intend to maintain an appropriate monetary policy stance. Together with commitments to fiscal discipline under the administration of President John Mahama, this should help us maintain stability in the foreign exchange markets,” he remarked.

Renowned legal practitioner and broadcaster, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over his appointment of the Member of Parliament (MP) of Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, to the Board of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Speaking at the Constitutional Day Lecture organised by the One Ghana Movement on February 28, 2025, Samson Lardy said the appointment of MPs to boards of state institutions is wrong.

He said that legislators are to hold boards of state institutions in check, and so if they become part of these boards, it would not allow them to perform their duties effectively.

“It is wrong for parliamentarians to be appointed to public boards because they are overseeing those institutions. When you make them board members, how do they oversee that institution?

“Just two days ago, the president appointed Isaac Adongo to the Bank of Ghana board. If the Bank of Ghana does wrong, he’s supposed to oversee them. How is he going to do it? So, this is the problem,” he stated.

The broadcaster made these remarks while refuting an assertion by the Minority Leader and MP of Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, that politicians alone cannot be blamed for the level of corruption in Ghana.

He insisted that politicians are responsible for the level of corruption in the country.

“Corruption in Ghana is so endemic, it’s so bad. And we have to point at politicians because that’s where the grand corruption is. And I like to use this example, and it’s real, that a school is built, and it’s supposed to have been built for how many millions? A little rain, storm, wind, it’s gone and pupils may die.

“A politician has pocketed the money. The road is done, and they tell you just a kilometre costs how much? The rains come, and the road is washed away. It happens only here; it won’t happen anywhere else. So, the people who drive that kind of corruption are the politicians,” he said.

Abandoned maternity block at Tafo Government Hospital strains maternal healthcare

0

A 23-year-old abandoned maternity block at Tafo Government Hospital in the Ashanti Region is severely affecting maternal healthcare in the area.

The project, initiated in 2002 by then-Member of Parliament Hon. Dr. Akoto Osei during President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration, has been left to deteriorate, with the building showing significant wear and tear over time.

Originally intended to reduce child mortality and improve maternal healthcare, the project has instead become a white elephant.

According to hospital administrators, the maternity block currently has only two beds, drastically limiting healthcare services.

Daniel Adu Amankwaa, the hospital’s administrator, told OTEC News that completing the project would allow the facility to accommodate more patients, as it serves as a major referral center for over five neighboring municipalities.

He emphasized that while staff remain dedicated to their work, the lack of infrastructure is hindering their efforts.

Patients have appealed to regional authorities to prioritize the project’s completion, sharing difficulties such as being forced to sleep on the floor due to inadequate space.

They urged the NDC government to take action, stressing the urgent need for improved maternal healthcare facilities in the region.

Boosting agribusiness and local food production key to Ghana’s economic recovery – Adongo

Business News

Ghana’s economic recovery will be driven by agribusiness, mechanised farming, and a deliberate push to reduce reliance on imported staple foods, says Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central and a board member of the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking on GHOne TV on Monday, March 3 2025, Mr Adongo said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, led by John Mahama, will prioritise modernising agriculture and investing in agribusiness to strengthen the economy.

“Agribusiness is the future. If we get it right, we will create jobs, boost food production, and improve food security,” he stated.

He noted that outdated farming practices continue to limit agricultural growth and productivity in Ghana.

To address this, he said the NDC government will establish Agricultural Mechanisation Centres across the country to provide farmers with modern equipment.

“We cannot continue using crude, slash-and-burn farming methods. We need mechanisation centres where farmers can access tractors, harvesters, and irrigation equipment at subsidised rates,” he said.

Mr Adongo also stressed the need to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported rice and maize, which costs the country millions of dollars every year.

“We will stop Ghana’s overreliance on imported rice and maize. These are crops we can grow here, and we will support our farmers to produce enough to meet domestic demand,” he said.

He added that a Mahama-led government would roll out policies to encourage large-scale farming, provide financial and technical support to farmers, and create market opportunities for local produce.

“Our goal is to transform agriculture into a profitable and competitive sector that feeds the nation, creates sustainable jobs, and strengthens the economy,” he added.

Stop adopting the surnames of your husbands

Entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega Entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega

Entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has expressed his stance regarding the practice of women usually adopting the surnames of thier husbands.

In a discussion on Neat FM, spotted on Instagram on March 4, 2025, Nana Frimpong Ziega said women shouldn’t change their surnames to that of their partners because it negatively affects them during divorce.

Citing gospel musicians Empress Gifty and Obaapa Christy, he said the singers are suffering from identity crisis because they adopted the names of their former partners.

“If a woman is getting married, she does not change the name that was given to her by her father to that of their husband. Because Obaapa Christy and Empress Gifty are suffering from an identity crisis. A lot of people still call Obaapa Christy Christaina Love and Empress Gifty Gifty Osei but that is not their names.

“They are no more with their husbands, yet people keep calling them by their names. It would create a lot of problems for you, especially when you want to create a document, you would now have to swear an affidavit,” he established.

He added that he would not allow his daughters to indulge in such practices.

“There is no daughter of mine who would adopt the name of their husband. I don’t know the husband from anywhere, moreover he is not my blood. So what happens just in case the two get divorced,” he stated.

Finance minister must apologise for misleading claims – Dr. Ayew Afriye

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye (L) and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye (L) and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

The Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has called on the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to apologise for what he describes as misleading claims about the misuse of National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) funds.

Speaking with the media in Parliament on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Dr. Ayew Afriye insisted that statutory allocations to the NHIA are approved by Parliament, with input from both the Majority and Minority, making it difficult for the funds to be misused without scrutiny.

“They are passing the buck, and I want the Minister of Finance to admit and apologize to the people of this country that the promise they made to uncap cannot be fulfilled. In this budget, we expect nothing less than a full allocation of what was received in the Health Fund to the NHIA.

“Now, if he talks about misuse, I disagree with that,” he stated.

Dr. Afriye continued, “You know, the Finance Minister is a very smart young politician, intelligent, and I will not take his words for granted when he talks about misuse. This is a statutory allocation, and it is done here in Parliament, unlike other state agencies whose budgets are approved by the Ministry of Finance. We approve NHIA’s budget in Parliament. It is a joint effort of both parties which is the Majority and the Minority. So, if there has been misuse, we have been sitting here for several years approving the budget,” he added.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has raised critical concerns about the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), citing financial shortfalls and misuse of resources as major challenges affecting its efficiency.

Speaking at the opening session of the National Economic Dialogue on Monday, March 3, 2025, he noted that the problems with the NHIS are not only financial but also related to the diversion of resources.

“The National Health Insurance Scheme faces financial shortfalls and also misuse of resources,” he stated.

SOEs in Crisis: ECG, ADB among struggling government entities

Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) logos Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) logos

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has sounded the alarm over the severe financial and operational risks faced by state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and joint venture companies, calling for urgent restructuring to avert further economic strain.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue on Monday, March 3, 2025 Dr. Forson revealed that almost all SOEs are operating at a loss, citing critical cases such as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).

“SOEs and joint venture companies are facing mounting operational and financial risks. Almost all of them are in the red,” he emphasised.

One of the key concerns raised was the financial status of COCOBOD, which reported a GH¢2.2 billion profit in 2023.

However, Dr. Forson clarified that this figure was artificial, as it stemmed from a debt suspension that temporarily relieved COCOBOD from servicing its obligations.

“From 2021 to 2023, COCOBOD reported some profit, but this GH¢2.2 billion in 2023 is not a true reflection of its financial health. The profit resulted from a debt suspension, meaning the underlying debt still exists. Urgent restructuring is needed to address these challenges,” he explained.

The National Economic Dialogue, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, has brought together policymakers, economists, business leaders, and civil society organizations to craft strategies for economic recovery.

The insights gathered are expected to shape key policies, including the forthcoming National Budget, as the government seeks to stabilize the economy and revamp struggling SOEs.

Speaking at the ceremony, General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value at MTN Ghana, Isaac Mate, emphasised the foundation’s dedication to empowering young minds through technology.

“The completion of this facility demonstrates MTN’s unwavering commitment to education and the future of Ghana’s youth. Access to technology is not a luxury—it is a necessity,” he stated.

He highlighted that Yilo Krobo SHS, one of only two public senior high schools in the district, has long faced challenges due to the absence of a well-equipped ICT lab.

The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Ivy Asantewa Owusu, speaking on behalf of Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey, expressed deep gratitude to MTN Ghana Foundation for its support in enhancing the school’s technological infrastructure.

She underscored the critical role of science, technology, and critical thinking in shaping students for the future.

The minister also donated GH¢10,000 towards additional resources, including a printer and other essential equipment.

The Director of Science Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, also lauded MTN Ghana Foundation for its role in establishing the ICT centre.

She emphasised that the facility would significantly enhance students’ skills in robotics, coding, and programming, aligning with Ghana’s broader goal of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics  (STEM) education and preparing the next generation of innovators and leaders.

“Education is the foundation of national development, and partnerships like this are key to shaping the future of our country. We are grateful for this collaboration and look forward to continued support in expanding STEM education in Ghana,” she said.

The Headmaster of Yilo Krobo SHS, Mr. Philip Narh Donkor, hailed the commissioning of the ICT lab as a major step toward transforming the school into a technology-driven institution.

“This facility is a game-changer for our students, equipping them with 21st-century skills that will position them for success in the global job market,” he stated.

He revealed that Yilo Krobo SHS has already integrated technology into its daily operations, including the use of smart TVs in classrooms and a biometric system for attendance tracking.

“Looking ahead, the school plans to implement AI-powered attendance monitoring, digital security stations, interactive smart boards, and IoT-enabled devices for personalised learning experiences,” he announced.

Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager for the MTN Ghana Foundation, also urged students and school authorities to maintain the facility to ensure its sustainability.

Kwakye Ofosu lauds 24-hour service by Ghana Publishing Company Limited

0

The Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL), popularly known as Assembly Press, has launched a 24-hour service operation, marking a significant milestone in its history.

The launch event, held at the company’s premises in Accra, signifies a shift towards increased efficiency, job creation, and economic transformation in Ghana’s publishing and printing industry.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, commended the company for its proactive initiative. He noted that it is rare for state-owned enterprises to take such bold steps ahead of government directives.

“Even before the government launches its 24-hour economic program, which was central to the campaign of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Publishing Company has taken the lead. You have already gone ahead of everybody else to launch a 24-hour service. This shows your commitment and determination to chart a new course,” he stated.

The Minister also emphasized the need for state-owned enterprises to improve their competitiveness. He acknowledged that many state agencies lag behind due to a laid-back approach, allowing private firms to dominate key sectors. However, he expressed optimism that with this new initiative, GPCL will emerge as a leader in the industry.

“There are state-owned entities that are monopolies in their areas of operation, but where they face competition, we have often witnessed poor performances. It is my belief that with the launch of this 24-hour service, you will leapfrog your colleagues and position yourself as the go-to place for printing and publishing in Ghana,” he added.

The Acting Managing Director of GPCL, Nana Kwasi Boatey, highlighted the company’s rich legacy and the importance of adapting to modern trends. He noted that for 60 years, GPCL has played a critical role in Ghana’s development, handling government publications, legal documents, corporate materials, and educational books.

However, with increasing global demand for speed, accuracy, and digital transformation, the company has recognized the need to modernize its operations.

“The world is evolving rapidly, and the printing industry is no exception. The increasing demand for speed, accuracy, and digital transformation has compelled us to rethink our strategies. We cannot afford to be left behind in this fast-paced, technology-driven world. It is for this reason that we have introduced a 24-hour operational system starting today,” Boatey stated.

He explained that the initiative aligns with the government’s vision of a 24-hour economy, where businesses maximize productivity around the clock. Through this shift system, the company aims to:

– Improve service delivery by ensuring timely completion of printing projects.

– Increase production capacity, enabling the company to handle larger contracts.

– Create more job opportunities to support expanded operations.

– Enhance Ghana’s publishing industry and boost the national economy.

Mr. Boatey also emphasized the need for government support in ensuring the company remains competitive. He appealed for tax exemptions on imported paper and printing materials, as the high cost of production remains a major challenge.

“Printing is a fundamental component of governance, education, and national development. High production costs force many institutions to seek cheaper alternatives outside the country. By removing taxes on paper and other materials, the government will not only strengthen the Ghana Publishing Company but also make it more affordable for businesses, schools, and institutions to print locally,” he stated.

As part of efforts to sustain this 24-hour operation, the Management of GPCL is requesting government agencies to prioritize working with the company. Boatey stressed that it would be counterproductive for state institutions to outsource printing contracts when GPCL has the capacity and readiness to handle such projects.

“The Ghana Publishing Company is ready. We are running 24-hour services and are capable of doing all government works. Therefore, government printing contracts should come to us. It would be counterproductive for state institutions to outsource printing jobs when a government-owned entity is fully equipped to deliver,” he noted.

He further assured clients in both the public and private sectors that GPCL is committed to delivering high-quality services.

Beyond the 24-hour shift, GPCL is looking to integrate digital solutions into its operations. Plans are underway to expand e-publishing services, launch an online document management system, and introduce an e-gazette system to improve access to government publications.

“Our future is digital. We will roll out digital printing services, open an e-book shop, and ensure that clients who prefer electronic and digital formats can access them easily. These initiatives will position our company as a forward-thinking and highly efficient institution,” he revealed.

The Acting Managing Director also encouraged staff to embrace this new chapter with enthusiasm, teamwork, and adaptability. He acknowledged their commitment and assured them that the transition to a 24-hour system would bring growth and career advancement opportunities.

“A 24-hour operation comes with challenges, but it also offers opportunities for efficiency and career growth. I urge every one of you to embrace this vision and work tirelessly towards its success,” he urged.

He also invited corporate organizations, literary associations, and other stakeholders to collaborate with GPCL to produce high-quality books and materials that meet global standards.

The launch of GPCL’s 24-hour service marks a bold step toward innovation, competitiveness, and economic transformation in Ghana’s printing and publishing industry. With this move, the company seeks to not only serve government institutions more efficiently but also expand its reach within the private sector and the international market.

As the government pushes for a 24-hour economy, GPCL’s initiative serves as a model for other state-owned enterprises to follow. With the right support and strategic direction, the company is poised to achieve remarkable growth in the years ahead.

Govt committed to completing Suame interchange despite challenges – Agbodza

0

Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has assured the public that the government is working to resolve financial and logistical challenges to ensure the timely completion of the Suame Interchange and other critical infrastructure projects.

The project has faced significant delays due to inadequate funding, difficulties in relocating Ghana Water Company pipelines, and outstanding compensation payments to affected individuals.

Currently, contractors are advancing phase two of the project, which includes the construction of three overpasses and the widening of a 3.1-kilometre road. An additional 15 kilometres of local roads are near completion.

Work on the three overpasses at Anomangye, Suame New Road, and Abusuakruwa is ongoing, with contractors aiming to complete them within the next two months.

However, phase one, which includes the main four-tier Suame Interchange, is only 13 per cent complete, but One of the major obstacles hindering progress is the relocation of pipelines belonging to the Ghana Water Company Limited.

During a site visit, the Director of the Department of Urban Roads, James Amoo-Gottfried, provided an update on the project’s status and appealed for government intervention to address the financial and technical setbacks.

“The challenge they are facing is the Ghana Water pipe within the roundabout. They have been able to do some piling there, but there are still outstanding issues, and they are in discussion with Ghana Water to see how best that can be done. We hope that we can complete that and open it as soon as possible.” he noted.

Agbodza reaffirmed the government’s commitment to overcoming these challenges, ensuring that work progresses efficiently to meet the project’s completion timeline.

“What we know is that the money that has been reallocated cannot complete all the phases. But we thank the contractor. Phase two is largely done, as the engineer has said, we are now left with phase one, which is the critical part.

“Now that we do not have the full complement of the bridge, President Mahama’s goal is to ensure that wherever we can find resources to complete critical projects like this, we do so.

“So now that I have seen this, I will brief him to discuss the way forward in terms of how we can complete this.” he assured.

The outspoken media personality and staunch NDC member stormed X with a post that read, “Monkey worked.”

The post, now deleted, has since sparked massive discussions on X, especially as it coincided with Joycelyn Dumas topping the trends after her appointment as Deputy Director for Diaspora Affairs.

Meet the Buipewura, the father of the Jinapor brothers who ‘owes’ his chieftaincy to Asantehene

0

Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II is the father of John Jinapor and Samuel Abu Jinapor Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II is the father of John Jinapor and Samuel Abu Jinapor

The Jinapor brothers have been ever-present in governments formed by the two leading political parties — the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) — for over a decade.

Samuel Abu Jinapor was a Deputy Chief of Staff and subsequently the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources during the eight-year term of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Before Samuel Jinapor’s role in the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government, his older brother, John Abdulai Jinapor, was a Deputy Minister of Energy under the erstwhile government of President John Dramani Mahama and is now the Minister of Energy and Green Transition in the new Mahama government.

But many may not know that the Jinapor brothers are royals from the northern part of the country.

Their father is the Paramount Chief of Buipe in the Savannah Region, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II.

According to a post shared by the pro-Manhyia social media outlet, Asante Nation, Buipewura Jinapor II was a personnel of the Ghana Police Service who worked in Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region for most of his career.

The media outlet indicated that both Samuel Jinapor and John Jinapor were born in Asante Mampong, while their father was in active service.

The post included a video of the paramount chief’s recent visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to thank the king of Asanteman for helping him win the vice-chairmanship position of the National House of Chiefs.

During his remarks, the Buipewura disclosed that he was once removed from his stool, and it was the Asantehene who came to his aid.

He described the Asantehene as his God on Earth.

“Your life is important to me. God should give you long life. God should give you long life so that you continue to hold the whole of Ghana together. I come here to show gratitude to you, to say thank you. You are my God on this earth. Thank you. Because of you, out of the 73, I got 54 votes. This was because of your blessings and support, so I couldn’t sit down without giving honour to whom it is due.

“There is a lot ahead of me, and I pray that you share your God-given wisdom with me when I call on you, either day or night. This is not the only support you have given me. People don’t know this. I was removed from my stool, but Nana said that I should go back; it (removal) won’t come to pass,” the Buipewura said in the Twi dialect.

Minority vows to resist new taxes and increments

0

Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam

The Minority has strongly opposed any government move to introduce new taxes or increase existing ones, warning that such measures would place an additional burden on Ghanaians.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, March 3, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam criticized the government’s tax revenue target of GH¢200 billion for the year, describing it as unrealistic given the current economic conditions.

Dr. Amin Adam accused the government of hypocrisy, recalling how it previously condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for what it termed excessive taxation.

“This is how they plan to tax Ghanaians to meet their GH¢200 billion revenue target. Yet, this same government accused us of overtaxing when the NPP administration collected GH¢152.9 billion in tax revenue by the end of 2024, raising the tax-to-GDP ratio to 17% from President Mahama’s 13% in 2016. How do you now expect to collect GH¢200 billion in an economy that is struggling?” he questioned.

He cautioned that excessive taxation would stifle economic growth, discourage private sector investment, and worsen the financial hardships of ordinary citizens.

Instead of imposing additional tax burdens, he urged the government to prioritize efficient revenue collection and prudent expenditure management.

Dr. Amin Adam assured that the Minority would stand with Ghanaians in opposing any attempt to introduce or increase taxes.

“We, the Mighty Minority, will stand with the people of Ghana to resist any attempt to smuggle in new taxes or increase existing ones. It is our duty to hold this government accountable and protect the livelihoods of our citizens,” he declared.

Why John Mensah was trending on social media

0

Former Black Stars captain, John Mensah Former Black Stars captain, John Mensah

Former Black Stars defender John Mensah featured in the trends on social media after a video of his penalty miss in the 2010 World Cup resurfaced.

This was triggered by Bournemouth player, Dango Quattara, who scored a penalty similar to what Mensah missed against Uruguay in a quarter-final match of the 2010 World Cup.

Quattara moved slightly away from the ball, looked at the Wolves goalie, and hit a cheeky low shot to the right side of the post.

The goal reminded some social media users of Mensah’s penalty, where he placed himself in a similar position and shot the ball in a similar direction, only to be saved by the Uruguayan goalkeeper, contributing to Ghana’s painful elimination from the 2010 World Cup.

Some football fans criticized the former Black Stars captain for not shooting the ball with power and precision to beat the goalkeeper, as the Bournemouth player did.

Others argued that since he was a defender, he cannot be entirely blamed for missing such a crucial spot-kick.

The 2010 World Cup exit remains a painful memory in the minds of Ghanaians, who were saddened by the situation.

Gabon junta chief declares bid for presidency

0

Gen Brice Oligui Nguema took power following a coup in 2023 Gen Brice Oligui Nguema took power following a coup in 2023

Gabon’s military leader Gen Brice Oligui Nguema has announced his intention to run for president in next month’s election.

Nguema seized power in 2023 in a coup that ended the long-standing rule of the Bongo family. He then pledged to hand over power to civilians.

The country has however since passed a new constitution and electoral code that critics argue were designed to favour a bid for the presidency by the junta leader.

Nguema told the Gabonese people on Monday that he had decided to run in the 12 April election “after careful reflection and in response to your many appeals”.

Addressing supporters during a heavy downpour in the capital, Libreville, he declared his readiness to change the fortunes of the oil-rich country.

“I am a builder and I need your courage, your strength, to build this country,” the the coup leader, who had just turned 50, said.

The announcement followed months of speculation about his intentions to officially occupy the country’s top seat.

On Saturday, Nguema told the military in a meeting that he was aware of their desire to see him run in the election and urged them to vote.

He told the defence forces he had heard their calls. “I listened to you and, believe me, I understood you,” adding, “I will get back to you within the next few days”.

There has been speculation that Nguema had left the army, as a requirement to run for the presidency – but that has since been denied by his spokesman.

A Facebook page associated with Nguema clarified on Monday that he was required to abandon his military uniform temporarily while running for election.

The page, Infos CTRI Officiel, said that he would have to permanently leave the military if he won the election. “If he’s not elected, he will return to the barracks,” it said.

The Nguema-led junta is credited for ending 55 years of the Bongo dynasty.

Ali Bongo had ruled for 14 years before he was toppled. He took office after the death of his father, Omar Bongo, who had been president for 41 years.

Last month, the president of neighbouring Equatorial Guinea, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, encouraged the Gabonese people to support Nguema for a better future for their country.

Some opposition and civil society groups in Gabon have however been urging the military leader to honour his word and leave power to civilians after the transition.

Despite Gabon’s oil wealth and vast forests, one third of its 2.4 million people live below the poverty line, according to the UN.

EMY Africa Launches New Magazine

0

Opare-Addo addressing dignitaries at the event

Founder and Executive Director of EMY Africa, Kojo Soboh, has celebrated a significant milestone in the brand’s journey to inspire greatness at the just ended Generation Now Brunch held last Saturday in Accra.

According to Kojo Soboh, EMY Africa has always been about celebrating African excellence with class and integrity.

He recounted the conceptualisation of the EMY Generation Now Magazine, which began three years ago when his brother Chris Soboh, editor of EMY Africa Magazine, proposed creating a platform to interact with young people, spotlight, encourage, and empower them.

This led to the creation of Generation Now. “Generation Now is more than just a magazine; it’s a movement. We spotlight young achievers, encourage them, and empower them through our magazine, awards, and inspiring greatness forum,” Kojo Soboh said.

“We also provide educational and entrepreneurship pitches, awarding winners with funds to invest in their businesses and education.”

Kojo Soboh emphasised the importance of collaboration, stating that Africans often believe in doing things alone, but collaboration is key to achieving greatness.

Platforms like the Generation Now launch allow people to connect, share ideas, and collaborate.

Minister for Youth Development and Employment, Opare-Addo, reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting young entrepreneurs. “Our ministry is dedicated to supporting young ideas, proposals, and pitches,” he said.

Opare-Addo encouraged young entrepreneurs to recognise the value of partnerships, emphasising that many businesses fail due to isolation.

“By collaborating and recognising ecosystems and value chains within our industries, we can build enduring brands,” he added.

The minister highlighted the government’s goal of building businesses that stand the test of time, citing EMY Africa’s 10-year milestone as a shining example of perseverance and innovative initiatives.

“We’re committed to supporting you through various programmes, including the Adwumawura programme, which will provide entrepreneurship support, incubation, and development opportunities,” Opare-Addo said.

The minister endorsed and supported the Generation Now initiative, which empowers young people.

Telecel Ghana is celebrating International Women’s Month with a vibrant lineup of activities under the derivative theme ‘Accelerate HER.’

The month-long celebration, is aimed at empowering women, challenging gender biases, and advancing inclusivity.

In line with International Women’s Day 2025 celebration under the global theme – Accelerate Action, the telecommunications giant has outlined a number of internal and external activities to amplify women’s voices, invest in their future, and challenge gender stereotypes.

In a message to launch International Women’s Week, chief executive of Telecel Ghana, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai highlighted the importance of taking bold steps to elevate and empower women, noting that progress toward gender equality remains slow globally.

“At Telecel Ghana, we don’t just talk about change, we drive it. This International Women’s Month, we are taking concrete steps to ensure that women receive increased support and the push they need to succeed. Accelerating HER is everyone’s responsibility.”

The celebration kicks off with Wear Purple Day, where employees will wear purple attire to symbolise solidarity with women’s empowerment. The #SheElevatesMe campaign will be rolled out to encourage staff to share posts appreciating the inspiring women in their lives.

A wealth building and financial planning webinar will be organised for Ladies in Telecel to provide valuable insights on achieving financial independence and equipping women with economic strategies to secure their futures.

Telecel Ghana will organise the “Accelerate HER Future” Mentorship initiative at the Kanda Cluster of Schools, where female employees will inspire young girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Additionally, the ‘Buy A Math Set for HER’ campaign is crowdfunding donations to provide essential math tools for girls, ensuring they have the resources for academic studies.

The telco will also host a night of an engaging conversation over drinks focused on strategies for women to accelerate their personal and professional growth. This will be preceded by a ‘Boss Lady Headshot Shoot’, offering female employees the chance to enhance their professional profiles with high-quality headshots.

The climax of the International Women’s Month will be the second edition of the Women 100 Power Connect, a gathering of accomplished and influential women from all sectors of our country to share experiences, inspire one another, exchange ideas and discover areas for collaboration.

“This month is about more than celebration; it’s about concrete action. We are committed to creating opportunities for women to thrive, both within Telecel Ghana and in the communities we serve. The ‘Accelerate HER’ theme reflects our belief that empowering women is essential for building a stronger, more inclusive and equitable world,” said Daniel Adanu, acting Human Resources Director of Telecel Ghana.

Telecel Ghana hopes the Accelerate HER campaign for International Women’s Month will empower more women, challenge biases, and create opportunities for growth to drive gender equity.
