The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formed an 11-member committee to probe its loss in the 2024 general elections.
Chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, the committee is tasked with analyzing the factors behind the party’s defeat and proposing solutions to strengthen its future prospects, as reported by Citi Newsroom.
According to NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the committee has been given a three-month mandate to review internal party elections, evaluate campaign strategies, and identify key challenges that contributed to the loss.
The findings will be presented to the party’s National Council for consideration and action.
The 2024 elections marked a significant political shift, with former President John Dramani Mahama reclaiming the presidency after securing a decisive victory over the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on December 9 that Mahama garnered 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast. In contrast, Bawumia received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
Mahama’s victory was accompanied by substantial gains for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which secured a majority in Parliament.
Over 180 parliamentary seats have been confirmed for the NDC, including constituencies that were previously strongholds of the NPP.
This outcome not only bolsters Mahama’s mandate but also positions the NDC with significant legislative power as he prepares to assume office.
The NPP’s loss has raised concerns about its campaign approach and internal dynamics. The establishment of the committee reflects the party’s commitment to introspection and rebuilding.
By identifying areas for improvement, the NPP aims to regain political strength and address voter concerns ahead of future elections.
Prof. Oquaye’s leadership of the committee brings extensive political experience and insight to the task.
His role will be crucial in ensuring a thorough examination of the issues that contributed to the party’s performance in the 2024 elections.
The committee’s work is expected to set the foundation for strategic reforms within the NPP as it seeks to recover from this significant electoral setback. The findings and recommendations from the investigation will likely shape the party’s approach to re-engaging with voters and rebuilding its political momentum.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has successfully disbursed GH¢270 million to healthcare providers nationwide to cover claims submitted and vetted up to October 2024 and part of November 2024.
In a statement signed on January 3, Dr Da-Costa Aboagye, Chief Executive of NHIA, said the payments are within the agreed-upon three-month reimbursement period and currently has no outstanding vetted claims to pay.
“This latest payment brings the total amount released by the NHIA over the past four months to over GH¢1.2 billion, reinforcing the Authority’s ongoing commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the sustainability of the NHIS.”
Dr Da-Costa Aboagye urged NHIA healthcare facilities to submit their claims promptly, as claims should not cover a period exceeding 90 days.
In addition to this current payment, the NHIA has also made significant disbursements in recent months. On December 1, 2024, the NHIA released GH¢200 million for claims covering September and part of October 2024, following an earlier disbursement of over GH¢335 million on October 9, 2024, for claims related to August 2024.
In September 2024, the NHIA began disbursing GH¢402 million to health facilities to cover claims for June and July 2024. These payments demonstrate the Authority’s dedication to fulfilling its financial obligations to healthcare providers and strengthening the healthcare sector for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

From Shuja Asad to Sehar Khan, these stars really made a mark this year and cemented their places in fans’ hearts.
It’s always refreshing to see emerging talent make its mark in the television industry, especially when they introduce a fresh perspective and bring dynamic energy on-screen.
The heart of a democracy lies in its promise of transparency and accountability. Yet, Ghana’s Parliament has opted for opacity in deliberating the controversial emoluments and ex gratia payments for Article 71 officeholders.
The current compensation arrangements for Article 71 officeholders—enshrined in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution—remain very contentious.
FIFA has unveiled the official list of Ghanaian referees approved to officiate international matches for the 2025 calendar year. The list comprises 10 Center Referees, 10 Assistant Referees, one Futsal Referee, one Beach Soccer Referee, and one Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
In accordance with FIFA regulations, it is mandatory for each Member Association (MA) to propose new referees or renew the appointments of existing ones on the FIFA list annually. The selection process involves rigorous requirements, including successful completion of FIFA-approved fitness and medical tests.
The Referees Committee of the Association oversees the nomination process, ensuring that all candidates meet FIFA’s eligibility criteria. Once the nominations are finalized, the list is submitted to the Executive Council for approval before being forwarded to FIFA for final validation. FIFA retains the authority to reject any nominee who fails to meet the stipulated standards.
Approved referees earn their FIFA badges for the calendar year, from January to December.
Their re-nomination for subsequent years depends on their performance and other considerations deemed necessary by the GFA. It is important to note that the FIFA badge remains the exclusive property of the Member Association, not the individual referee.
This announcement underscores the importance of maintaining high standards in officiating, as these referees will represent Ghana on the global stage. The approved referees now have the responsibility to uphold the integrity of the game and showcase the quality of Ghanaian officiating in international competitions.
This development highlights FIFA’s commitment to ensuring the best officials are selected and signals an opportunity for the nominated referees to excel in their respective roles.
Attached herein is the list of officials approved by FIFA.
The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the shutdown of the Bonsa Headworks, which supplies 75% of potable water to the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality in the Western Region.
This decision, according to GWL, is due to the severe impact of illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” on the Bonsa River, rendering it impossible to extract and treat water for distribution.
In a statement dated January 2, 2025, and signed by Wisdom Doe Akoto, the Tarkwa District Manager of GWL, the company noted that all efforts to curb the pollution caused by galamsey activities have proven unsuccessful, leaving no choice but to suspend operations at the facility.
GWL expressed concern over the persistent pollution and called on stakeholders, including local authorities and security agencies, to take decisive action to address the issue and restore the river’s quality.
“We have tried all that we could but to no avail, hence the shutdown. The river is still being monitored for acceptable parameters to enable us to restart production, and until then, the plant remains closed.
“We promise to update the public on any development with regard to the current situation,” he said.
This closure is expected to affect water supply to residents and industries in the municipality, further highlighting the devastating impact of illegal mining on essential resources.
The Bonsa Headworks Plant Manager, Paul Bawa, speaking to Citi News on the shutdown said the situation was necessary as the plant 1982 installed capacity of 1 million gallons per day had been reduced to just about 400,000 gallons per day due to the raw water pollution by “galamsey”.
“The installation capacity is 1 million gallons which is about 5,400 cubic metres but because of the problems over the years from when it was commissioned in 1982, the raw water quality deteriorated and now we are doing three thousand cubic metres which is far below what be doing and the activities have intensified so much that the water is just mud.
“The pumps cannot lift that much for us to pump, then we have to shut down. As at the shutdown we were doing between 1,800 to 2,000 cubic metres and finally, the thing cannot pump so we have to shut down,” he said.

Mr. Agambila’s concern stems from the president-elect’s plans to implement a 24-hour economy, which he believes would require a more robust team.

Recent rumors on social media that Ghana’s betting tax has been repealed are untrue. This deceptive remark comes after John Mahama was declared President-Elect, despite the fact that he has yet to be inaugurated into office.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) began withholding 10% of all gambling platform wins in August 2023, following the adoption of the Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1094). The levy was implemented as part of a package of measures aimed at increasing gaming sector revenue.
While both leading presidential candidates, John Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, promised to abolish the betting tax throughout their campaigns, this pledge has yet to be accomplished. According to Article 174 of the 1992 Constitution, taxes can only be levied, altered, or repealed by an Act of Parliament. No notification has been made to Parliament regarding the abolition of the betting tax.
The Ghana Revenue Authority has likewise not published a statement announcing the removal of the tax. Thus, statements that President-Elect Mahama has eliminated the betting tax are false and deceptive.
Ghanaians are reminded to rely on verifiable information from trustworthy sources to avoid falling victim to fake news. The public is also reminded that policy changes, such as tax cuts, must go through legal channels and be approved by parliament.

The Bonsa Headworks, which provides 75% of the Western Region’s Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality with drinkable water, is closing, according to a statement from Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
According to GWL, this decision was made because of the detrimental effects of illicit mining operations, often known as “galamsey,” on the Bonsa River, which make it hard to extract and purify water for distribution.
In a January 2, 2025, statement signed by GWL’s Tarkwa District Manager, Wisdom Doe Akoto, the business stated that it had no alternative but to halt operations at the facility because all attempts to reduce the pollution brought on by galamsey activities had failed.
Concerned about the ongoing contamination, GWL urged all parties involved—including local government and security organizations—to move swiftly to resolve the problem and improve the quality of the river.
“The shutdown was necessary because we tried everything we could, but to no effect. The plant stays closed until the river is monitored for suitable criteria that will allow us to resume production.
He declared, “We pledge to keep the public informed of any developments pertaining to the current situation.”
This shutdown is anticipated to have an impact on the municipality’s water supply for businesses and residents, underscoring the disastrous effects of illicit mining on vital resources.
Despite CHASS’s plea to postpone the reopening, the Ghana Education Service (GES) claims the Senior High School reopening date has not changed.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) recently cautioned that the reopening process would be hampered if the financial difficulties affecting the second-cycle schools are not resolved by January 3, 2025.
In a statement released just days ago, it went on to strongly caution against the reopening of schools.
Nonetheless, nothing has changed, according to a statement released by the Ghana Education Service (GES) on Thursday, January 2, one day prior to the reopening date. According to the statement, the academic calendar for 2024–2025 will go on as planned.
The GES informed parents, students, staff, and the public at large that the academic schedule has not changed.
Primary and junior high school students are scheduled to begin studies on January 8, 2025, while senior high school (SHS) students are anticipated to return on January 3, 2025, according to the official announcement.
The administration of GES also stated that they are actively working with the Ministry of Education to resolve the issues brought up by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) management.
According to the GES, it is striving for a prompt resolution of these issues in order to guarantee a seamless start to the school year.
It called on all parties involved to remember these crucial dates and make the required preparations in order to get ready for the start of the upcoming school year.
The statement underlined the significance of following the schedule in order to guarantee a successful reopening of schools nationwide.
play videoFormer Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has reflected on his illustrious career, shedding light on the internal challenges he faced within the national team camp.
During an Instagram live session on Thursday, December 2, 2025, Gyan revealed a disturbing plot that sought to undermine his authority.
The former Sunderland striker shared how, during his tenure as captain, certain individuals within the team worked to sabotage his influence on younger players.
According to Gyan, his reputation initially endeared him to new players, who would eagerly seek his guidance.
However, within days, their behavior would change, and they would begin to avoid him.
“The kids would come into the team, all excited to see me, but then three days later, they would avoid me because they had been brainwashed,” he said.
Gyan further explained how these incidents cost him the respect of the younger players and impacted the team’s performance after his departure.
“People brainwashed the kids against me, so they didn’t respect me. After my departure, you can see the effect. Go back and look at the kids who were brainwashed—where are they now?” he questioned.
The retired striker remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances. His six goals at the FIFA World Cup make him the highest-scoring African player in the tournament’s history.
In June 2023, Gyan officially retired from professional football after an illustrious 18-year career.
Getting older has a few perks — wisdom, greater perspective on life and senior discounts among them — but most of us associate aging with the harsh reality of wrinkles, joint problems and a decline in intimate performance.
Even though intimate activity does tend to decline with age, the link between age and intimacy dysfunction isn’t as strong as you might think — and the reality might not be so harsh. It’s often possible to maintain your swagger well into old age, as long as you adopt good behaviors and habits when you’re younger.
Below, we’ve looked at the science behind aging and intimacy to explain when most men start to experience a decline in their performance and incline in instances of dysfunction.
We’ve also shared a few actionable tips that you can use to maintain a healthy, enjoyable intimate life in your 60s, 70s and beyond.
When Do Men Stop Making Love?
Since male drive and physical health can vary hugely from person to person, there’s no specific age at which most men give up on intimacy. There’s also no real answer to the question, “What age does a man stop getting hard?”
That’s right, fellas. Don’t let the “old men making love is weird” or “old people making love is a myth” comments bother you — they’re nonsense.
However, research suggests that most men stop making love around 75 to 85 years of age.
In a 2010 study conducted by the University of Chicago, researchers looked at the link between age and intimate activity in men and women throughout the United States.
The study used data sourced from large-scale surveys of the US population and found that 38.9 percent of men between 75 to 85 years of age remained intimately active.
It also noted that 70.8 percent of intimately active men reported that they had a “good quality” intimate life. Good on ya, gents!
Interestingly, the men who reported being in either very good or excellent health were more likely than their peers to maintain a high level of interest in intimacy, which helps confirm that keeping up with your health as you age is crucial for more than just living longer.
In short, most men remain well into retirement age, with the majority of intimately active senior men happy with their intimate lives.
Male Libido and Age
Libido tends to decrease with age in men and women. Part of this is due to natural changes in your production of testosterone that occur as you get old, but there are a few other key factors that contribute, as well:
Testosterone Levels
Medical Conditions
Medications
Mental Health
Testosterone Levels
Testosterone is responsible for the pitch of your voice and the amount of muscle mass on your frame, and most importantly for regulating your intimacy drive.
It’s normal for your testosterone production to slowly decline as you age. Most men begin to produce less testosterone after age 30, with testosterone production dropping by about one percent every year.
FYI: Women experience a similar drop in hormone levels, with estrogen production declining after menopause. Who needs his and hers bathroom towels when you can have his and hers hormonal chaos, right?
Medical Conditions
Fellas, it’s a natural part of life — as we get older, we stop being as spry as we used to be. Medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and others become more prevalent, and some of them can — and do — have a negative effect on performance and libido.
Medications
Certain medications used to treat age-related issues — like blood pressure medications or antidepressants — can also affect your intimacy drive. Check the side effects of your current medications and ask a healthcare provider questions about what libido issues you might experience.
Mental Health
Finally, your mental health is important (and not just for your libido, but definitely for your libido). Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress — which often develop in middle age or later in life — can also have a negative effect on your desire. Can a 50+ Year-Old Man Be Intimately Active? Our Best Tips
While it’s normal to experience some amount of slowdown in your desire as you grow older, entering your 60s, 70s or even your 80s doesn’t mean that you need to throw in the towel.
It’s absolutely possible to enjoy satisfying relationships well into old age by doing the following:
Below, we’ve explained how.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
When it comes to staying Intimately active as you grow older, good physical health usually equals good healthy desire.
Simple things like exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, getting good sleep each night and treating sleep issues like sleep apnea and avoiding unhealthy habits such as drinking alcohol excessively all have a positive impact on your health and ability to maintain a healthy intimate life in your 60s and 70s.
Use ED Medication
ED can affect men of all ages, but it’s particularly common in the older crowd.
In fact, research suggests that men have about a 40 percent risk of developing some form of ED in their 40s, with this risk increasing by 10 percent with each additional decade.
Modern ED medication is the route that most men take because it can make it easy to maintain getting hard.
Popular medications for treating ED include:
Used before intimacy, these medications make it easier to get and maintain hard, allowing you some solid hanky-panky without having to worry about ED.
There’s also some new evidence that suggests that certain ED meds are associated with a decreased risk of heart attack, stroke, and overall mortality — just another reason to talk to a healthcare provider and see if they’re right for you. (Learn more at ED Cures for Seniors: How to Get Hard at 65+)
Treat Any Underlying Medical Issues
Many intimacy performance issues that affect older men are either directly caused or made worse by chronic health conditions, including:
High blood pressure
Cardiovascular disease
Type 2 diabetes
Obesity and sleep apnea
If you have a chronic disease or other health issues that could affect your intimacy function, make sure to treat it — ideally with your healthcare provider’s support.
It’s also important to take a proactive approach to check for age-related medical issues (like prostate cancer if you’re between the ages of 55 and 69) that could affect your performance and quality of life.
By being proactive about your health, you’ll be able to deal with issues as they arise and maintain good health and performance at any age.

Lace gowns have long been a symbol of elegance, sophistication, and femininity in fashion. In recent years, lace has made a major comeback in modern designs, offering a beautiful mix of intricate detailing and contemporary silhouettes. Whether for a wedding, a gala, or a special evening event, lace gowns provide a stunning look that combines timeless appeal with current trends. From intricate full lace designs to delicate lace accents, there are now a variety of styles to suit every occasion.
1. Full Lace Gowns
Full lace gowns remain a classic choice, offering a delicate and luxurious feel. These gowns often feature all-over lace patterns, from floral to geometric designs, providing a rich and textured look. Modern variations include lace gowns with sheer panels, allowing for a peek of skin while maintaining a graceful and sophisticated aesthetic. The addition of lining in strategic areas ensures comfort and coverage, making these gowns ideal for formal occasions like weddings or galas.
2. Lace and Satin Combo
The combination of lace with satin or silk is a popular trend, blending the softness of satin with the intricate beauty of lace. Satin skirts or bodices paired with lace overlays create a smooth yet textured look that radiates luxury. These gowns often feature lace detailing around the neckline, sleeves, or hemline, adding a subtle touch of elegance while keeping the overall appearance sleek and modern. Perfect for evening wear, these gowns are often seen in rich jewel tones or soft pastels.
3. Sheer Lace Accents
Another trend in lace gowns is the use of sheer lace accents. These gowns incorporate lace in sections such as the neckline, sleeves, or back, offering a hint of sensuality without being overly revealing. Sheer lace panels on the sides or along the back create a stunning effect, adding depth and dimension to the gown while allowing for a more breathable and light look. This style is perfect for those looking for a balance between elegance and modern flair.
4. Off-the-Shoulder Lace Gowns
Off-the-shoulder designs have become a popular choice in lace gowns, showcasing a woman’s neckline and shoulders in a graceful and alluring way. The lace fabric often covers the bodice, while the open neckline creates a feminine and flattering silhouette. This style is perfect for weddings, evening events, or cocktail parties, offering a refined yet bold look that highlights the beauty of both the lace and the wearer.
5. Lace Fit-and-Flare Gowns
Fit-and-flare lace gowns offer a flattering shape that accentuates the waist while allowing freedom of movement. The fitted bodice, often adorned with lace, transitions into a flared skirt, creating a feminine and flattering silhouette. These gowns often incorporate lace at the hem or in layers, adding volume and texture to the skirt while keeping the top portion sleek and structured. This style is perfect for women who want a gown that combines elegance with comfort.
6. Lace with Embellishments
To add a modern twist to classic lace designs, many designers are now incorporating embellishments like sequins, beads, or pearls into lace gowns. These additions bring an element of glamour and sparkle, making lace gowns perfect for special occasions or evening events. The combination of lace and embellishments creates a captivating visual effect, adding both texture and shine to the gown.
Conclusion
The new beautiful lace gown styles for ladies offer a variety of options for every occasion, from classic full lace designs to modern combinations with satin, sheer panels, and embellishments. Lace continues to be a timeless fabric that brings elegance, romance, and sophistication to any gown, ensuring that every woman feels special and confident in her look. Whether you’re attending a wedding, a gala, or an evening event, there’s a lace gown style that will make you shine.
A devastating incident occurred at the Tonyx Hotel in Koforidua on Sunday, leaving a family in grief and a community in shock. Nine-year-old Yaa Serwaa, a pupil of Trinity Presbyterian Basic School, lost her life in a tragic drowning incident at the hotel’s pool.
According to eyewitnesses, Yaa Serwaa had accompanied her father and five siblings to the hotel for a fun-filled day.
While her siblings and other children were swimming in the pool, Yaa Serwaa opted to sit by the poolside and take pictures.
However, in a shocking turn of events, she was later found drowning in the pool, unnoticed by her siblings and other swimmers.
The father, who was responsible for the children’s supervision, reportedly searched for Yaa Serwaa everywhere before being alerted to her presence in the pool.
She was retrieved and rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has raised questions about the safety measures in place at the hotel’s pool and the level of supervision provided by the live guards.
The mother of the deceased, in an interview, revealed that Yaa Serwaa had celebrated her 9th birthday just a month ago, on December 1, 2024.
The police in Koforidua have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Yaa Serwaa’s death, and the hotel management is cooperating with the authorities.
GE Aerospace, whose joint venture made the engines of the Boeing aeroplane that crashed in the deadliest aviation disaster on South Korean soil, joined the investigation as Seoul extended by a week special inspections of all 101 Boeing 737-800 jets.
The transport ministry extended to Jan. 10 its inspections following the crash of a Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air that killed 179 people, Joo Jong-wan, the deputy transport minister for civil aviation, told a press briefing.
“Investigators are in the process of probing the cause of the accident by piecing together a puzzle,” Joo added.
The inspections had initially been set to wrap up on Friday, but another ministry official said further checks would look into matters such as whether airlines spent sufficient time on maintenance and secured parts for repairs. Video images on social media appear to show smoke emerging from the plane’s right engine in the lead-up to the crash.
Sunday’s flight from Bangkok to the southwestern county of Muan belly-landed and overshot the runway at the regional airport, exploding into flames after hitting an embankment. The ministry has said it would examine engines, maintenance records and landing gear on all 737-800s, with serious violations leading to suspension of an airline’s operations.
The plane’s engines are produced by GE Aerospace’s CFM International joint venture with Safran. A media representative for GE Aerospace did not immediately respond to Reuters’ emailed question about the investigation.
The addition of a GE representative takes to 23 the size of the investigation team, including 12 Korean investigators and U.S. representatives from Boeing and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
While the cause of the disaster is still unclear, the crash could add to headaches faced by Boeing as the planemaker battles to restore the trust of customers following two fatal 737 MAX crashes, a mid-air panel blowout, and a seven-week strike.
Unanswered questions include why the aircraft did not deploy its landing gear and what led the pilot to rush into a second attempt at landing after telling air traffic control the plane had suffered a bird strike and declaring an emergency.
South Korea’s investigation team said two of its members would leave for the United States with the flight data recorder recovered on Monday to analyse the critical data with the NTSB. Joo expected investigators to finish transcribing the cockpit voice recording from the doomed aircraft in the next several days, making a decision later on the disclosure of the transcript.
The ministry also held an emergency meeting with the chief executives of 11 airlines, including top-ranked Korean Air Lines and Asiana Airlines, to discuss ways to beef up aviation safety.
South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok urged investigators on Friday to work swiftly to collect evidence from the crash scene and analyse data from the cockpit voice recorder.
On Thursday, police said they were searching Jeju Air and the operator of Muan International Airport. They banned the airline’s chief executive, Kim E-bae, and an unidentified official from leaving the country. Investigators also plan a special inspection of the location and materials of the airport landing system at airports elsewhere in South Korea by Jan. 8, 2025.
Safety experts said the embankment, designed to prop up the navigation system that helps pilots make safe descents, was too rigid and too close to the end of the runway. Investigators will analyse data on 107 mobile phones recovered from the crash site, including text messages, for clues to what happened before the crash, Yonhap News said.
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has categorically rejected assertions that associate the independence of the Central Bank with the government’s Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
He emphasized that the debt exchange initiative was a direct reaction to a significant national crisis and did not impact the autonomy of the Bank of Ghana.
“The debt exchange programme has nothing to do with the independence of the central bank,” Dr Addison said during an interview with Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition.
He characterized the DDEP as a significant national emergency that necessitated an immediate resolution to prevent the nation from facing economic collapse.
“It was a life-and-death matter for all Ghanaians. At that point, nothing else mattered. Salaries were not going to be paid. There was going to be chaos because nobody was getting their investment returns.”
Dr. Addison clarified that the Bank of Ghana’s participation in the debt exchange programme was not a reaction to economic shocks but a strategic response.
He further detailed the sequence of events, indicating that the International Monetary Fund’s recommended approach included the declaration of a debt standstill, which was subsequently succeeded by a debt exchange.
“The IMF’s approach to the crisis was clear. The Bank of Ghana had to continue financing the government to maintain stability while we worked on the programme.
“At that point, those holding government instruments were the ones impacted. What happened in October during the debt standstill could have happened much earlier in the year, but it would have been disorderly without the appropriate policies in place. This was the solution given the situation the country found itself in.”
Dr. Addison also dismissed the notion that the independence of the central bank was undermined during the crisis, emphasizing that its measures were consistent with the IMF’s framework aimed at restoring stability.
“The recent economic challenges were about survival. Let’s not oversimplify the situation.”

Over 100 shops have reportedly been burnt to ashes, leaving many traders devastated and reeling in pain over the loss of their capital and goods.
A male trader, whose name has yet to be confirmed, said many lives and businesses have been lost due to last Thursday dawn’s inferno.
The middle-aged man pleaded with Ghanaian businessmen and the wealthy in society, particularly Osei Kwame Despite, to come to the aid of the traders, many of whom are women.
“What has happened to us is devastating and so I want to appeal to the wealthy people in Ghana, especially Dr Osei Kwame Despite to come to our aid,” he said.
Speaking in a video sighted by YEN.com.gh on social media, the male trader blamed the Ghana National Fire Service for the spread of the fire.
“If the fire service claims that they did a good job, I’m telling you on authority that they did not do anything. As at 2 AM when I was here, their cars were packed. No fire service person was fighting the fire from all angles of the market,” he alleged.

Bishop J.Y. Adu’s prophecy on Katamanto
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the Katamanto fire outbreak confirmed a prophecy by Bishop J.Y. Adu.
The man of God reportedly predicted that the Katamanto market in Accra would be ravaged by fire in 2025 during his December 31, 2024 crossover service.
Following the unfortunate incident, the video of the prophet’s prophecy has resurfaced on social media.
The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a tiler to 22 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling and impregnating a 12-year-old girl.
Stephen Otu, 32, popularly known as Atta, pleaded guilty to the charge raised against him and begged the court to have mercy on him.
However, the court presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, found Otu guilty and sentenced him accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts.
Chief Inspector of Police Abraham Ayitey, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, a 38-year-old Pragia rider, was the father of the victim who was in primary six.
He said the complainant, victim and the convict resided in the same area at Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.
According to the prosecution, about two months ago, the convict met the victim in Wassa Akropong township and asked for her age, and the victim told him she was 12 years old.
Chief Inspector Ayitey said in the process, the convict lured the victim into his room, assaulted her sexually, and gave her GH¢20.00 after the act, and warned her not to inform her parents.
The court heard that Otu took advantage of the victim and on three different occasions he had sexual intercourse with the victim.
The prosecution said on November 24, 2024, at about 1700 hours, the victim’s mother noticed she was pregnant, and asked the victim who was responsible, and she mentioned Otu as the one who had been having sex with her.
He said a report was made to the police and the complainant was given a police medical form to take the victim to the hospital for treatment.
Chief Inspector Ayitey said the medical form submitted to the police after the victim had been examined proved that she was two months pregnant.
He said Otu was arrested and detained to assist investigations.

Ghana’s informal economy has suffered an enormous blow after a fire engulfed the Kantamanto used clothes market in the capital on Thursday, destroying more than 100 shops and goods worth millions of the local cedi currency. Thousands of traders have lost their livelihoods.
The fire swept through the bustling Kantamanto Market early on Thursday morning, reducing much of it to ashes.
Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) deployed 13 fire tenders to bring the flames under control.
Goods worth millions of the local cedi currency have been destroyed, the GNFS said.
“This is devastating,” said Alex King Nartey, a GNFS spokesperson. “We’ve not recorded severe casualties, but the economic loss is enormous.”
“Preliminary investigations suggest faulty electrical connections might have sparked the blaze, although we are not ruling out arson,” Nartey told France’s AFP news agency.
Little remains of the more than 2,000 shops in the open-air market – a hub of Ghana’s informal economy.
People were flocking, many in tears, to assess the damage, RFI correspondent Victor Cariou reported.
In the middle of the ruins, a large crowd of young scrap metal dealers were trying, on Thursday, to salvage anything they could to try and sell it on.

‘I feel empty’
Around 10,000 people depend on the market to earn a living, local business associations estimate. Hundreds of traders, many specialising in the resale of used clothes, now face an uncertain future.
Isaac Ofori lost both his shops in the fire, along with all his merchandise. “My shops burned, I feel empty, he told RFI, estimating the value of his losses at more than 10 times his annual income.
Like many traders, Ofori is calling on the government for help.
Koffi Poku, who also lost all his stock in the blaze says it will be impossible to face this crisis alone.
“I have no idea where I can find the money to launch another business, so the government has to help and support us. Everything’s been spoiled,” he told RFI.

Call for emergency funding
Richard Amo Yartey, an official with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said they were investigating the cause of the incident in collaboration with other agencies.
“The scale of destruction is heart-wrenching, but we are committed to identifying the root cause and providing immediate relief to affected traders,” he said.
The president of the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG), David Kwadwo Amoateng, urged the government to act swiftly, adding that the “market is a vital part of our economy”.
“The traders here need emergency funding to get back on their feet. Without immediate intervention, thousands of livelihoods are at risk,” he said.
Kantamanto Market, which is home to over 30,000 traders, has been a lifeline for many in Accra’s Central Business District.
The government is yet to announce a formal response to the tragedy.
About 15 million items of second-hand clothing arrive in Ghana each week, mainly from Europe. However, nearly half cannot be resold.

Stonebwoy’s former manager Blakk Cedi worked on Shatta Wale’s project in Jamaica
Blakk Cedi, former manager and close friend of Stonebwoy, has penned an emotional message of appreciation to Shatta Wale following his performance at the ‘Freedom Street Concert’ in Jamaica.
After his fallout with Stonebwoy, Blakk Cedi remained out of the public eye, with occasional appearances such as managing Kelvyn Boy at one point.
Besides running his own record label, Blakk Arm Group, he had kept a low profile until recently, when he disclosed that he had been given the opportunity to work as part of Shatta Wale’s team during the Jamaica concert.
Seeing this as a huge opportunity, Blakk Cedi took to social media to express gratitude and admiration for Shatta Wale, pointing out his excellent work ethic and the respect, trust, and love he demonstrated throughout their collaboration.
“I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunity to serve as part of your team during the Freedom Street Concert in Jamaica. It was an honor to step in and contribute to your vision, and I do not take that privilege lightly.”
He continued, “Your unwavering respect, trust, and love throughout this process truly humbled me. The warmth you extended made every step seamless, and it reinforced why you are so deeply admired by many.”
Blakk Cedi went on to emphasise the inspiration he drew from witnessing Shatta’s artistry and playing a role in his success.
He also expressed his best wishes for Shatta Wale’s continued growth.
“Being able to witness your artistry up close and play a role in this success was not just fulfilling but also inspiring. Thank you once again for entrusting me with such a responsibility. I am cheering for you every step of the way and look forward to seeing all the incredible heights you will reach,” he concluded, signing off with “1 Perfect Love ~BLAKK CEDI.”
The post quickly sparked reactions online.
Individuals from Stonebwoy’s camp have labelled Blakk Cedi a “sellout,” accusing him of disloyalty for working with Shatta Wale, who is often seen as Stonebwoy’s rival.
They stated that Blakk Cedi should have maintained some level of loyalty, given his once close friendship and pivotal role in Stonebwoy’s career.
However, others, including several celebrities, commended Blakk Cedi for what they described as his display of maturity, grace, and respect.
They praised him for being able to put aside past differences and recognise the achievements of his people.
Blakk Cedi and Stonebwoy’s split
In 2019, Blakk Cedi and Stonebwoy parted ways after some internal issues within the Burniton Music Group.
While the exact details of their fallout were never fully disclosed, reports stated that Blakk Cedi was asked to leave due to disagreements over how the label’s artistes were being managed.
Prior to this split, Blakk Cedi and Stonebwoy shared a very close bond, both professionally and personally.
They were not just business partners but best friends, and Cedi even served as Stonebwoy’s best man during his wedding.
Blakk Cedi had long been one of Stonebwoy’s most trusted allies, defending him in both public and private battles.
One notable instance was during the 2019 VGMAs when Stonebwoy had a near-confrontation with Shatta Wale and his team on stage.
Blakk Cedi stood at the front lines, protecting Stonebwoy and even throwing punches to fend off Shatta Wale’s followers during the altercation.

The Accra High Court has rejected preliminary legal objections from four National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidates regarding disputed election results. The ruling, delivered by Justice Forson Baah Agyepong, maintains that mandamus applications from NPP contenders are valid legal procedures.
According to court documents, the NDC candidates – Ebi Bright of Tema Central, Baba Sadiq of Okaikwei Central, Christopher Beyere of Techiman South, and Awurabena Aubynn of Ablekuma North – had claimed the applications were disguised election petitions that violated PNDCL 284 sections.
The NPP applicants, represented by Charles Forson, Martin Kweku Adjei Mensah Korsah, Patrick Yaw Boamah, and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, defended their position, stating they merely sought to compel a public institution to fulfill its duties.
Justice Agyepong clarified that aggrieved parties can pursue judicial review before election results are officially gazetted. The court emphasized that these applications aim to ensure the Electoral Commission performs its public functions rather than challenge result validity.
The ruling establishes that multiple legal avenues exist for addressing election-related matters beyond traditional election petitions. The judge specifically noted that the court’s jurisdiction was properly invoked in this instance.
The Electoral Commission supported the court’s decision to overrule the objections. The case now proceeds to hear the NPP candidates’ applications, which seek to compel the EC to complete result collation and declaration in their respective constituencies.
This development marks a significant moment in Ghana’s electoral process, establishing precedent for pre-gazette result disputes. The court’s decision reinforces the distinction between mandamus applications and election petitions, providing clarity on available legal remedies in electoral disputes.
The matter continues as the court examines the substantive mandamus applications, with potential implications for future electoral result declarations and the broader democratic process in Ghana.
The jeans skirt with top combination is a timeless and versatile outfit choice that effortlessly blends comfort with style. It provides a perfect balance of casual and chic, making it a go-to option for a variety of occasions, from casual outings to semi-formal gatherings. With countless styling options, this look can be easily adapted to suit personal tastes and current trends.
Choosing the Right Jeans Skirt
Jeans skirts come in various styles, including A-line, pencil, and button-down designs, ensuring there’s something for everyone. A classic denim skirt typically sits at the waist and falls either above the knee or midi-length, offering a flattering silhouette. For a more modern twist, you can opt for a distressed or frayed-edge skirt, which adds a casual, laid-back vibe to the outfit. Dark-wash denim skirts often work well for more polished looks, while lighter washes or ripped styles give off a relaxed, youthful energy.
Pairing the Jeans Skirt with Tops
The beauty of pairing a jeans skirt with a top lies in the endless combinations you can create. For a casual, everyday look, a simple graphic tee or fitted t-shirt is a perfect choice. Tuck the shirt in or knot it at the waist to add structure and define your silhouette. If you prefer a more feminine touch, a flowy blouse or button-up shirt pairs effortlessly with a jeans skirt, creating a balanced and polished look.
For a chic, evening-ready ensemble, you can elevate the outfit with a tailored blazer over a fitted top or a tucked-in blouse. A cropped top also adds a trendy edge, especially when paired with a high-waisted jeans skirt, showing off just the right amount of skin.
Footwear and Accessories
Your choice of footwear can completely transform the vibe of a jeans skirt outfit. Sneakers or flat sandals are perfect for a day of errands or casual meetups, while ankle boots or heels can dress the look up for a night out. For a touch of elegance, try strappy heels or wedges, which pair beautifully with a high-waisted skirt.
Accessories like statement earrings, a crossbody bag, or a wide-brimmed hat can add personality and flair. Adding a belt is also a great way to accentuate the waist and add an extra layer of style.
Conclusion
A jeans skirt with a top is a fashion-forward yet accessible outfit combination that works year-round. Whether you’re aiming for a casual, laid-back look or something a bit more sophisticated, this versatile pairing can be customized to reflect your unique style. With endless options for styling, the jeans skirt and top combo remains a go-to choice for effortless fashion.
In a significant development, the outgoing Akufo-Addo-led government has begun paying overdue amounts to caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme, marking a crucial step towards addressing the long-standing issue of delayed payments.
This move comes after repeated protests and demonstrations by caterers, who have been facing severe financial difficulties due to the government’s failure to settle their arrears.
The Ghana School Feeding Programme, launched in 2005, aims to provide nutritious meals to schoolchildren, particularly in deprived communities.
However, the program has been plagued by delays in payments, affecting the livelihoods of caterers and the quality of meals served to students.
In 2014, the program’s management called on the government to address the issue of late payments, which was jeopardizing the entire program.
Fast-forward to 2024, the situation remained dire, with caterers staging demonstrations and protests to demand payment for arrears spanning two academic terms.
The government’s assurances to settle the debts in August, September, and November 2024 fell through, leaving many caterers skeptical.
However, on December 31, 2024, the government made good on its promise, with payments beginning at around 6 p.m. Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi, the national president of the School Feeding Caterers Association, confirmed that some caterers were able to access the funds on January 1, 2025, thanks to e-switch machines located outside certain banks.
While this development brings relief to many caterers, challenges persist, particularly in rural areas where access to banking facilities is limited.
The delays have had a ripple effect on the caterers and the program as a whole, with many caterers taking loans or using personal funds to ensure meals were provided to schoolchildren.
The caterers are now calling on the government to implement measures ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of the Ghana School Feeding Programme.
They stress the need for a reliable payment schedule to prevent future disruptions.
In a related development, the government has also cleared some arrears owed to caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme, covering the 16 regions of Ghana.

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the shut down of the Bonsa Headworks, which supplies 75% of potable water to the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality in the Western Region.

The the International Chamber of Commerce said the tribunal found the branch profit remittance tax assessment by the West African nation “falls outside of the tax regime provided for in the petroleum agreements,” according to a Tullow statement published late on Thursday. The company filed a request for arbitration in 2021.
Shares rose as much as 13% to 24.76 pence as of 8:08 a.m. in London trading.
Ghana handed back-tax demands to some of the biggest companies operating there including MTN Group Ltd., Gold Fields Ltd. and Kosmos Energy Ltd. in recent years. The country was seeking additional revenue after losing access to international capital markets because of its ballooning debt and loan-service costs.
The ICC announcement is a boost for Tullow after Chief Executive Officer Rahul Dhir said he would step down and Kosmos Energy dropped a bid for the explorer following “very preliminary discussions” around a deal.
Tullow still has two remaining disputed tax assessments from the Ghana Revenue Authority for which it filed requests for arbitration with the ICC. They relate to loan interest over a decade and business interruption insurance proceeds it received. Those assessments total $387 million plus penalties, Tullow said in 2023.
“I look forward to constructive discussions with the government of Ghana to resolve the remaining claims,” Dhir said in the statement.
Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has opened up on his switch from ‘organised Christian religion’ towards a deeper exploration of spirituality.
According to him, this shift has been a pivotal part of his journey.
Speaking on DJ Slim’s podcast, Okyeame Kwame shared the experiences and research that shaped his decision, highlighting the historical introduction of religion to Africa as a key factor in his switch.
“Religion, as it was brought to us, was never about connecting us to God. It was about control and exploitation. Once you see that truth, it becomes hard to look at it the same way,” he stated.
The rapper delved into his study of Africa’s colonial history, drawing attention to a letter reportedly written by King Leopold II of Belgium.
According to him, the letter urged missionaries in the Congo to use religion to subdue the local population, ensuring compliance while European powers exploited the region’s resources.
“When you read words like those, you realize that religion wasn’t introduced to liberate us; it was meant to enslave us mentally,” he explained.
To him, the manipulation behind the introduction of religion to Africa was deeply disturbing, prompting him to re-evaluate his own relationship with faith.
He described his spiritual journey as a gradual process, moving away from conventional religious practices to embrace a broader understanding of spirituality.
“I’m now an omnist. explaining his belief in the validity of all religions while remaining open to questioning and learning from each.
He added, “Every belief system has a foundation, and I’m on a journey to explore them all. If something resonates with my truth, I embrace it.”

Traders who fell victim to the Kantamanto fire outbreak have rained curses on individuals they believe deliberately set the market ablaze. They are confident the perpetrators will not escape the wrath of God for their act of wickedness.
One of the victims, in an interview with GhanaWeb, stated, “Anyone who has a hand in this market fire, which has caused innocent people such pain and misery, will pay dearly for their actions.
“Majority of traders here at Kantamanto are single parents. You have burnt down the market—how do you expect us to feed our families? How can we take care of our children in school? We are already complaining that times are hard in Ghana, and this is the result of the wickedness of some Ghanaians. Many of the traders here have taken loans, and now their wares are destroyed. How are they going to service their loans and survive? Why burn the market because you want us out of here? You could have just told us that you wanted your land back, and we would have vacated the place peacefully. You could also have driven us out at gunpoint, and we would have left. But instead, you chose to burn down the entire market.”
She added, “Whoever has a hand in this wicked act will be questioned by the Almighty God. We will cry unto the Lord in prayers against the perpetrators and their families, and God will rain curses on each one of them and their family members because of the difficulty and suffering they have caused us. Some of the victims have collapsed from shock. The pain we are going through will be visited upon the perpetrators and their unborn generations.”
A devastating fire ravaged the Kantamanto market, causing extensive damage to several shops and properties.
The fire, which broke out around 1 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2024, was eventually contained by officers of the Ghana National Fire Service after 13 fire tenders were deployed to the scene.
Footage from the scene shows the market engulfed in smoke, with the fire visibly wreaking havoc.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey, confirmed in an interview that no casualties have been reported so far.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with authorities working to determine the source of the blaze and assess the extent of the damage.

A simple white tee is always a winner, but don’t be afraid to experiment with graphic tees for a fun twist. To elevate this look, tuck in the shirt and add a stylish belt. Complete the ensemble with sneakers or ballet flats for a laid-back yet chic vibe.
2. Tucked-in Blouse with High-Waisted Jeans
High-waisted jeans are perfect for accentuating your waist and elongating your legs. To create a balanced, elegant silhouette, pair them with a tucked-in blouse. Opt for a flowy, lightweight blouse or a structured button-down for a more polished appearance. Add a pair of heeled boots or sandals, and you’ve got a look that’s both comfortable and sophisticated.
3. Crop Top and Flared Jeans
If you’re in the mood for a fun and trendy outfit, try pairing a crop top with flared or wide-leg jeans. This combination gives off a retro vibe while embracing modern trends. Choose a crop top that suits your style—whether it’s a fitted one, a loose, bohemian-style piece, or a sporty, sleeveless design. Pairing the top with platform shoes or wedges can further enhance the vintage feel.
4. Statement Top with Distressed Jeans
For a bold and edgy look, distressed or ripped jeans can be paired with a statement top. This could be a sequined blouse, a bold patterned shirt, or even a graphic tee with a quirky design. The contrast between the ruggedness of the distressed jeans and the sophisticated or fun elements of the top creates a striking, fashionable ensemble. Finish the look with ankle boots or chunky heels to add an extra touch of flair.
5. Off-Shoulder Top with Skinny Jeans
An off-shoulder top adds a touch of femininity and can transform a basic outfit into something stylish and elegant. Pair it with skinny jeans to highlight your curves and create a balanced, flattering silhouette. This outfit is perfect for an evening out, a dinner date, or even a fun day trip. You can accessorize with statement earrings, layered necklaces, and strappy sandals to complete the look.
6. Layered Look with a Long Cardigan
For cooler days, layering is key. A long cardigan over a simple top, paired with skinny or straight-leg jeans, can create a cozy and chic outfit. You can play with textures by adding a chunky knit cardigan or a sleek, tailored one. Add boots or loafers for a polished finish, and you’ll have a warm yet stylish ensemble perfect for a casual outing or a coffee date.
7. Jumpsuit or Romper with Jeans
If you’re looking for something unique, why not combine a jumpsuit or romper with your jeans? Many modern jumpsuits feature lightweight fabrics and designs that can pair seamlessly with denim trousers. This hybrid look is practical yet stylish, perfect for those who love standing out while maintaining comfort.
Conclusion
The beauty of jeans trousers and tops lies in their versatility. From casual and comfortable looks to more polished, sophisticated outfits, the right pairing can reflect any woman’s personal style. Whether you prefer a simple t-shirt and jeans combo or a bold statement top with distressed denim, there’s no wrong way to rock this timeless ensemble. With the right accessories and a touch of confidence, jeans and tops will always be a go-to for stylish women.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched a scathing attack on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for conferring state awards on his appointees, describing the move as a slap in the face of Ghanaians.
According to the NDC, the awards were undeserved and only served to reward mediocrity and incompetence.
Previous Administration’s Awards
Interestingly, the NDC’s criticism of Akufo-Addo’s awards comes on the back of a similar move by former President John Dramani Mahama, who also awarded his appointees during his tenure.
In 2016, John Mahama conferred honours on several of his ministers and government officials, sparking controversy at the time.
NDC’s Hypocrisy
Critics have accused the NDC of hypocrisy, pointing out that the party’s previous administration also awarded its appointees.
However, the NDC has defended its stance, arguing that the awards conferred by Mahama were deserved and recognition of hard work and dedication.
Asiedu Nketiah’s Criticism
NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has been at the forefront of the criticism, describing Akufo-Addo’s awards as a “mockery” of the country’s honours system.
Asiedu Nketiah singled out the award conferred on the outgoing Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, as an example of the government’s poor judgment.
“State awards are serious business. They must be reserved for people of distinction, individuals who have fought for a good cause,”_ Asiedu Nketiah said.
“If we award state honours to vigilante boys and girls, we are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and shoot at people.” Asiedu Nketiah stated at the NDC 31st Revolution Forum held in Accra.
Call for Reforms
The NDC has called for reforms to the country’s honours system, arguing that the current system is open to abuse and manipulation.
The party has suggested that a committee be established to determine who deserves state awards, rather than leaving it to the discretion of the president.

Scavenging mothers who defied the choking smoke that emanated from the Kantamanto devastating fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday, January 2, appeared to care very little about the toxic smoke their children inhaled, as they braced the extreme health risks themselves, in the name of survival.
The immediate aftermath of Kantamanto’s worst fire disaster saw many people ignore the offensive toxic smoke to pick metal scraps to sell to nearby scrap dealers.
Some of the children coughed continually while others, strapped to the backs of their busy mothers, rubbed their agitated eyes in protest.
That attitude was condemned by some onlookers who argued that the mothers should have left the children, including babies, in safer environments.
Experts point to the fact that wildfire smoke is comprised of a mixture of gaseous pollutants (e.g., carbon monoxide), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]), water vapour, and particle pollution. Particle pollution represents a main component of wildfire smoke and the principal public health threat.
“Particle pollution” (also referred to as particles, particulate matter, or PM) is a general term for a mixture of solid and liquid droplets suspended in the air.
There are many sources of particle pollution; the most common is combustion-related activities, such as wildfires.
Particles can be made up of different components, including acids (e.g., sulfuric acid), inorganic compounds (e.g., ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, and sodium chloride), organic chemicals, soot, metals, soil or dust particles, and biological materials (e.g., pollen and mold spores).
During a wildfire or other combustion-related activities, concentrations of particles can substantially increase in the air to the point that particle pollution is visible to the naked eye.
Smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, causing coughing, a scratchy throat, irritated sinuses, headaches, stinging eyes or a runny nose. If you have heart or lung disease, smoke might make your symptoms worse.
The fire which started around 1 a.m., destroyed stalls and goods worth millions of cedis. Devastated traders recounted their losses, with many calling on the government for urgent support.

In a significant development, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has ruled in favour of Tullow Oil regarding a $320 million tax dispute with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) according to a release by the West Africa-focused company.
The ICC determined that the Branch Profit Remittance Tax (BPRT) does not apply to Tullow’s operations in Ghana’s Deepwater Tano and West Cape Three Points fields.
Consequently, Tullow is exempt from the $320 million BPRT assessment and will not face future BPRT liabilities related to these operations.
The arbitration ruling on the BPRT is a setback for Ghana and the GRA, as the decision effectively denies the country $320 million in expected revenue. It also raises broader questions about the fiscal frameworks governing Ghana’s oil and gas sector, particularly as the government seeks to attract investment while ensuring fair tax compliance.

Tullow Oil’s response to the ruling
In the press statement on the ruling, Tullow Oil expressed relief at the outcome, which it believes upholds its position on the tax assessments.
“Tullow is pleased that the ICC tribunal has confirmed our position that the $320 million BPRT assessment issued by the GRA in Ghana was not applicable to our operations,” the company stated. “This ruling brings clarity on the applicability of BPRT to our operations under the relevant Petroleum Agreements and double tax treaties.“
The company emphasized its continued commitment to working with the Government of Ghana to resolve outstanding disputes amicably.
Background of the dispute between Tullow Oil and BPRT
Tullow Oil is a key player in Ghana’s oil and gas sector, with significant investments in the Jubilee and TEN fields. The BPRT is a tax on profits that foreign businesses earn within a country and transfer to their parent companies abroad.
Tullow contested the GRA’s application of this tax, arguing it was inconsistent with the terms of their Petroleum Agreements and existing tax treaties.
While the ICC ruling is a victory for Tullow, the company is still engaged in arbitration over two additional tax disputes with the GRA. These include the disallowance of loan interest deductions for the fiscal years 2010–2020 and proceeds received under Tullow’s Business Interruption Insurance policy for 2016–2019. The combined disputed amount exceeds $387 million, plus penalties.
Tullow has stated its intention to resolve these matters through constructive dialogue, with arbitration proceedings ongoing.

It’s a powerful, bold look that showcases confidence and individuality.
6. The Curly Caesar Cut
For Black men with curly hair, the curly Caesar cut is a sleek yet stylish choice. This haircut features short, even lengths all around with a slight fringe in the front. It works well with natural curls, and the shape offers a clean, sophisticated finish. The curly Caesar cut is especially flattering for men who prefer a short, tidy style with a bit of texture on top.
7. The Mohawk Fade

In a dramatic turn of events, the Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat, defeating her closest rival, Michael Aaron Oquaye Jnr. of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by a margin of 298 votes.
Background to the Electoral Drama
The Dome-Kwabenya constituency, the stronghold of the NPP by Sarah Adwoa Sarfo was one of the highly contested seats in the 2024 general elections.
The election was marred by chaos and confusion at the collation center, leading to the destruction of pink sheets and results collation forms.
The EC had to intervene to ensure the completion of the collation process.
*The Controversy Surrounding the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre Polling Station*
At the center of the controversy was the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre polling station, where a presiding officer used a presidential training sheet instead of a parliamentary pink sheet to record the results.
The sheet was not signed by party agents, and the presiding officer claimed that she had to flee the scene due to threats from thugs.
*The Electoral Commission’s Investigation*
The EC launched an investigation into the matter, meeting with the presiding officer, party agents, and other stakeholders.
The commission discovered that the presiding officer had indeed used a presidential training sheet, but the results tallied with those recorded by the party agents on their tally sheets.
*The Declaration of Results*
After completing the investigation, the EC declared Faustina Elikplim Akurugu as the winner of the Dome-Kwabenya seat, with 50,967 votes, while Michael Aaron Oquaye Jr. Polled 50,669 votes.
The commission also announced that the total valid votes were 102,158, with 624 rejected ballots.
*Reactions to the Declaration*
The NDC has welcomed the declaration, while the NPP is yet to officially react.
The outcome of the election is seen as a significant victory for the NDC, which has been working to regain its footing in the constituency.
The Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary election has been one of the most dramatic and contentious in recent Ghanaian electoral history.
The EC’s investigation and declaration of results have brought closure to the process, but the controversy surrounding the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre polling station will likely be remembered for a long time to come.
In a remarkable end to the year, Ghana’s government has recorded a 9% oversubscription in its final Treasury bills auction for 2024, securing a total of GH¢4.6 billion.
This development comes amidst fluctuating investor confidence following the general elections.
The auction, which dominated the 91-day Treasury bill, attracted bids worth GH¢3.8 billion, while the 182-day bill contributed GH¢628.16 million, accounting for 13.5% of the total bids.
The 364-day bill brought in GH¢179.37 million, representing 3.36% of the total.
However, this marginal oversubscription came at a cost, as treasury bill rates saw another consecutive hike.
The interest rate for the 91-day bill edged up from 27.85% to 28.03%, while the 182-day bill rose from 28.68% to 28.88%. The 364-day bill also increased, moving from 29.97% to 30.07%.
This performance wraps up the year for the government’s short-term debt market strategy, setting the stage for 2025.
Treasury bills have become the government’s primary financing tool after losing access to international capital markets and facing successive sovereign credit downgrades.
In 2022, the government announced a domestic debt exchange program, which led to a stagnation in the local debt market. As a result, the government has relied heavily on treasury bills to finance its activities.
Looking ahead to 2025, Databank projects that the government may reduce T-bill issuances by up to GHS 20 billion, bringing the total stock to around GHS 200 billion.
This move is expected to be driven by the incoming administration’s commitment to fiscal consolidation.
President-elect John Mahama has signaled a strong commitment to reducing the country’s debt burden.
His administration plans to scrap the E-levy and COVID-19 levy, which could lower demand and yields for short-term instruments.
