If you look at the result, we come away here really positive but if you look at the performance then they are two different things. I think Paris Saint-Germain take a lot of positives towards the game we are going to play in a week. But I can tell you, they’re not only going to play against us, they are also going to play against our fans – and we really need them. Not only next Tuesday, but we need our fans on Saturday against Southampton as well. Like you might know, we don’t have a winter break in England so we just keep on playing for months already and these players are definitely going to need the help of our fans to show up two times as they did in the last few months.
Canada and Ghana sign historic air transport agreement
In a landmark move to strengthen bilateral ties, Canada and Ghana have reached their first-ever air transport agreement, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, tourism, and trade between the two nations.
Announced by Canada’s Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, the Honourable Anita Anand in a statement issued by the government of Canada, the new agreement grants airlines from both countries the right to operate scheduled passenger and cargo flights. The deal allows for 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights for airlines from each country.
The agreement also offers flexibility in airline designation, enabling multiple carriers to serve any points in both Canada and Ghana, a move expected to enhance competition and improve travel options for passengers.
Expressing enthusiasm about the deal, Minister Anand highlighted Ghana’s increasing importance in Canada’s global economic strategy.
“Ghana is a growing market for Canada, and I am pleased to see this first agreement open the door to new opportunities for travellers and businesses in both countries. This agreement will connect more passengers and strengthen our cultural and commercial ties,” she said.
The move aligns with Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which aims to foster long-term, sustainable competition in the air transport sector. With air transport agreements now covering over 125 countries, Canada is strategically positioning itself as a global aviation leader.
The new agreement is expected to bolster trade between Canada and Ghana, which saw two-way merchandise trade surpass $380 million in 2023. Canadian exports to Ghana accounted for $281 million, while imports from Ghana stood at $99.8 million.
Canada’s Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, the Honourable Mary Ng, emphasised the agreement’s economic benefits.
“The newly finalised Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Ghana represents a significant step forward for both nations. This agreement will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and drive economic growth. For Canada, it provides critical support for our exporters, opening doors to the dynamic West African market and enabling Canadian businesses to meet global demand for their products. This partnership reinforces our commitment to expanding trade and fostering mutually beneficial relationships across the globe,” she stated.
The agreement is effective immediately, meaning airlines can start operating flights under the new terms without delay. This development is expected to benefit business travellers, tourists, and cargo operators, making Canada and Ghana more accessible to each other.
With the deal in place, stakeholders in both the aviation and trade sectors anticipate increased investments, more job opportunities, and improved cultural exchange between the two nations.
This milestone further cements Ghana’s position as a key gateway to West Africa and strengthens its international partnerships, setting the stage for deeper economic collaboration in the years ahead.

‘What is going on?’- Afenyo-Markin cries out amid chaos in Parliament

Chaos erupted on the floor of Parliament during a debate on digitisation, which saw heated exchanges on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
Tensions flared as the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, delivered a statement criticising Ghana’s digitisation agenda.
He stated, “What type of digitisation is this? You take my biodata on a card, and when I appear in person, I am not important, but the card lying at home is? Go to your bank today without carrying your Ghana Card, there should be proper digitisation so that when you appear at the bank, your digital data can be accessed and processed.”
He continued, “And that is the kind of digitisation that should be guided by a blueprint to inform our actions, not an uncoordinated approach.”
After his statement, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor proceeded to call on another Member of Parliament to contribute to the debate.
Suddenly, tensions escalated as Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin questioned the proceedings.
“What is going on? What is happening here? We will not allow this! What is going on in this chamber? No, this has never happened in the history of Ghana’s politics. Why?” he protested.

Govt Terminates School Feeding Regional, Zonal Coordinators’ Contract
The government has announced the termination of contracts of all regional and zonal coordinators of the School Feeding Programme.
A statement issued and signed on Tuesday March 4, 2025 by the Gender Minister, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, asked the regional and zonal coordinators to visit the Ghana School Feeding Programme Secretariat for their termination letters and handing over instructions.
The statement did not give a reason for the termination of their contracts but thanked them for their service and wished them well.
“Please be informed that the contracts of all regional and zonal coordinators of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) are hereby terminated with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed gratitude to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, for his transparency regarding the construction of the new Central Bank headquarters.
He noted that in Dr Asiama’s report to Parliament, he acknowledged that the entire project was completed at a lower cost than initially projected, resulting in significant savings for the country.
“Dr Addison is no more there, his other deputies are not there. Dr Asiama and his new team are here to give us an honest account of what the records have. And they’ve been very sincere. Should anybody on the streets of Accra today claim that the Central Bank building did not meet value for money or was too expensive, what the Bank of Ghana is saying is that it is actually cheaper compared to market standards,” he stated.
The Central Bank further clarified that of the total construction cost of $222 million, $202 million has been paid, with $20 million still outstanding.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, after Dr Asiama’s report on the project’s cost, Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the construction represented significant savings for the state.
He highlighted that instead of the contractor being paid $2,658 per square metre, the BoG successfully negotiated a lower rate of $2,068 per square metre.
“The Bank of Ghana is saying that, apart from following due process, it has also saved taxpayers money. We have a 107,000-square-metre project, and on each square metre, there is a savings of $600 plus,” he added.

Engage Now Africa, Ensign Global University Host Human Trafficking Seminar

Engage Now Africa (ENA) and Ensign Global University has collaborated to host a seminar on human trafficking, engaging 57 participants, including medical professionals, gender advocates, and doctors.
The seminar aimed at educating participants on human trafficking and exploitation, while enabling them to identify warning signs and explore prevention and eradication strategies.
The seminar focused on the role of public health professionals in combating human trafficking. By the end of the programme, participants gained a deeper understanding of their role in identifying and supporting victims. The interactive question and answer session sparked insightful discussions, with many public health professionals describing the seminar as an eye-opener.
The programme which was hosted by Dr. Sandra Boatemaa Kushitor from Ensign Global University’s Department of Community Health and Afasi Komla, Director of Engage Now Africa highlighted the role healthcare workers play in identifying and preventing trafficking, as they are often the first point of contact for victims.
As an anti-human trafficking organization, ENA recognizes the importance of engaging healthcare professionals in raising awareness and collaborating with survivor-led organizations.
The seminar successfully highlighted emerging trends in human trafficking and explored comprehensive strategies for its eradication.

Ghana must position itself as Africa’s premier gold trading hub – Dr Anarfi Sarpong
Ghana must take deliberate steps to establish itself as Africa’s premier gold trading hub to fully harness the economic benefits of its gold resources, according to Dr William Anarfi Sarpong, a key proponent of the Gold Souq project.
Dr Sarpong, who is leading the initiative, believes Ghana’s current gold trade structure favours raw exports over value addition, limiting the country’s potential earnings. He argues that creating a structured gold marketplace, much like Dubai’s Deira Gold Souq, could boost revenue, create jobs, and elevate Ghana’s status in the global gold industry.
“For centuries, Ghana has been known as the Gold Coast, yet we have not maximised the full potential of this resource. We must transition from just mining and exporting gold to refining, designing, and trading it at a global scale. That is what the Gold Souq seeks to achieve,” he stated.
The Gold Souq project, expected to generate between $2 billion and $10 billion annually, will provide a structured marketplace for gold trade, bringing together artisans, jewellers, investors, and tourists. The initiative will integrate gold refining, jewellery design, and trading facilities, creating a competitive industry that attracts both local and international buyers.
According to Dr Sarpong, Ghana’s gold sector has long been dominated by raw exports, illegal mining activities, and middlemen, leaving little value within the country. He believes the Gold Souq will change the narrative by ensuring that Ghana benefits from the entire gold value chain.
“If we can refine and process more of our gold locally, we can increase our revenue exponentially. Right now, a lot of our gold ends up in the international market through intermediaries, and we lose billions of dollars in the process,” he noted.
Beyond the economic benefits, Dr Sarpong emphasised the potential impact on tourism and culture. He envisions the Gold Souq as a global attraction, drawing visitors who want to experience Ghana’s rich gold heritage, learn about traditional goldsmithing techniques, and purchase authentic Ghanaian jewellery.
“Imagine a world-class gold marketplace where tourists can see gold being refined, buy handcrafted jewellery, and learn about our centuries-old gold craftsmanship. This will not only generate foreign exchange but also revive our cultural industries,” he explained.
He further stressed the importance of positioning Ghana as the go-to destination for luxury gold shopping, much like Dubai and India.
“People travel to Dubai to buy gold. Why can’t they come to Ghana, the original Gold Coast? We have the resources, the history, and the talent to make this happen,” he added.
Dr Sarpong called on the government and private sector to support the initiative, emphasising that Ghana cannot afford to lose out on a multi-billion-dollar opportunity. He urged stakeholders in the gold industry, tourism, and creative arts sector to unite behind the vision and push for its realisation.

Schools Shutdown In Nanik Over Chieftaincy Clashes
Information reaching DGN, indicates that schools within Nanik near Bimbagu in the Nakpanduri District of the North East Region, has been shut down temporarily over chieftaincy-related incident.
The North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, who confirmed the closure of schools said measures have been put in place to reintegrate the junior high and senior high schools final year students within the affected areas to Nakpanduri and Bunkpurugu to continue their studies and write their examination.
“We are trying to reintegrate the final year students in the JHS and SHS to join the nearby schools in Nakpanduri and Bunkpurugu so that they can continue to write their exams without any hindrance,” he said.
He hinted that REGSEC and other stakeholders are monitoring the situation and if they are assured there’s peace, the shutdown schools will be opened.
“REGSEC in consultation with relevant stakeholders and the Overlord are meeting to see how we can find a lasting solution to the problem” and if there’s peace then we can reopen the schools,” he said.
Mr. Tia, however noted that security has been beefed up in the affected communities and assured that there is currently relative calm in the areas.
It will be recalled that three persons were reported killed at Nanik near Bimbagu in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District of the North East Region over chieftaincy-related incident.
Nashiru Maijida, a 27-year-old teacher, was among the victims who lost their lives over the chieftaincy clash.
The said chieftaincy conflict is between two rival factions around the Bimbagu area in the district, which has resulted in the burning of about 50 houses with several persons sustaining various degrees of injuries.

Dr. Edward K. Brown, an economist and Senior Director of Research, Policy and Programmes at the Africa Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), has emphasized the critical role of economic transformation in driving Africa’s development.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Dr. Brown highlighted the need for African economies to move beyond structural adjustments and focus on adding value to their products and exports.
“Absolutely, I think, in the 1980s and 1990s, we were talking about structural adjustments and so on. But if you are not transforming the structure of the economy into high value-added products and exports. Then you are not able to create jobs, you are not able to get the revenue that you need to finance social programmes.
“So, transformation is very critical; it will help to alleviate poverty, so rather than focusing on poverty, you focus on real outcomes.
He added, “If your economy is transforming, you are adding value to the products, and you are creating the jobs necessary, then you can reduce poverty, you can have an inclusive growth, and all those things come together around that framework.”
Dr. Brown stressed that economic transformation is essential for reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development.
He noted that by focusing on value addition, job creation, and inclusive growth, African economies can become more resilient and self-sufficient.
He also underscored the importance of export diversification to protect economies from external shocks, urging policymakers to prioritize strategies that drive long-term transformation.

Take a look at the approved and unapproved venues for the Ghana Premier League
Baba Yara Sports Stadium is the home grounds of Asante Kotoko
The Club Licensing Department of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have declined the use of about five Ghana Premier League venues following their recent inspections.
After a brief halt following the death of a fan of Asante Kotoko, the GFA announced on Friday, February 28, 2025, that the league was due to resume on Friday, March 7, 2025.
As such, measures were put in place to ensure fan safety at the various match venues as they gear up for the resumption.
This meant that the Club Licensing Department conducted a reinspection of the stadiums and has since brought out their verdict.
Out of the fifteen venues, these five were approved:
Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, home grounds of Nations FC
Dun’s Park, Bibiani, which serves as the home grounds for Bibiani Gold Stars
Nsenkyire Sports Arena, home of defending champions FC Samartex
TNA Park, Tarkwa, home grounds of Medeama SC
Kpando Sports Stadium, the home grounds of Kpando Heart of Lions
Five other venues have been approved but with certain requirements that need to be met.
Therefore, these venues will be inspected again on March 9, 2025, to ensure that the required changes have been made. The venues are:
Nii Adjei Kraku II Park
Tuba Astro Turf
Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium
Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park
Nana Agyemang Badu Park
Interestingly, five venues also fell short of the requirements and have therefore been rejected by the Club Licensing Department.
Notable venues among these are the home grounds of Asante Kotoko, (Baba Yara Sports Stadium) and Hearts of Oak (University of Ghana Stadium).
The others are:
Wenchi Town Park
Berekum Golden City Park
AAK II Sports Arena
The Club Licensing Department gave various reasons, including safety and security concerns, and gave them until March 9, 2025, to fix these issues for another inspection.

Hohoe is peaceful, don’t give it a bad name
Member of Parliament (MP) for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo has cautioned former Hohoe MP John Peter Amewu to desist from tarnishing the reputation of the constituency, stressing that Hohoe is a peaceful place.
His statement follows reports indicating that some unknown assailants, on Wednesday, March 5, stormed the former MP’s residence and fired gunshots with one purporting to be a court bailiff.
In an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Wednesday, March 5, Tsekpo refuted claims that gunmen reportedly stormed the residence of Amewu in Hohoe.
He maintains that it was only a delegation which included a court bailiff and a security personnel, that had gone to post a court notice on the wall of Amewu’s residence, adding that no guns had been fired.
Tsepko posits that Amewu had miscommunicated the incident to the media in an attempt to perhaps score some political point.
Tsekpo insisted that the Hohoe is a peaceful constituency devoid of disorderliness.
“The former MP knows that the people of Hohoe, we have five traditional areas in Hohoe, we are a very peaceful people. That is why I said he should exercise patience when such things happen. You will think you are selling your party but you are giving Hohoe a bad name. I don’t think his life is in danger.
“We were in the constituency last two weeks together. He himself said in an interview that when he was the MP and a minister, he was driving alone, so he is safe,” he stated.

His assertion follows the presentation of a six-page report by the Governor of the new Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, detailing the step-by-step processes undertaken in executing the project.
UK competition watchdog drops Microsoft-OpenAI probe
The UK competition watchdog has ended its investigation into the partnership between Microsoft and the maker of ChatGPT, OpenAI.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was looking into whether Microsoft’s relationship with what is the world’s best known artificial intelligence (AI) firm changed after the turmoil which saw its boss Sam Altman fired and then rehired.
The CMA has concluded that, despite Microsoft investing billions of dollars into OpenAI and having exclusive uses of some of its AI products, the partnership remains the same, so is not subject to review under the UK’s merger rules.
Digital rights campaigners, Foxglove, said it showed the CMA had been “defanged.”
The CMA opened the probe in December 2023, after Microsoft had put pressure on OpenAI to re-employ Mr Altman, days after he had been sacked.
“In view of Microsoft’s potentially important role in securing Sam Altman’s re-appointment, the CMA believed there was a reasonable chance that an investigation would reveal that Microsoft had increased its control over OpenAI’s commercial policy,” the watchdog said.
But on Wednesday, it concluded Microsoft “exerts a high level of material influence” over OpenAI’s commercial policy without fully controlling it.
“Because this change of control has not happened, the partnership in its current form does not qualify for review under the UK’s merger control regime,” CMA Executive Director for Mergers Joel Bamford posted in an article on LinkedIn.
But he added: “The CMA’s findings on jurisdiction should not be read as the partnership being given a clean bill of health on potential competition concerns; but the UK merger control regime must of course operate within the remit set down by Parliament.”
‘Nothing to see here’
Critics, though, say the decision is linked to the changed political environment the CMA is now operating in.
The government has instructed the country’s regulators to suggest ways of stimulating economic growth.
In January, the government removed the then chair of the CMA, Marcus Bokkerink, because it was unhappy with his response to that call.
He was replaced on an interim basis by Doug Gurr, former boss of Amazon UK.
“The CMA has sat on this decision for over a year, yet within just a few weeks of a former Amazon boss being installed as chair, it has decided everything was absolutely fine all along, nothing to see here,” said Foxglove co-executive director Rosa Curling.
“This is a bad sign that Big Tech has successfully convinced the prime minister to defang our competition regulator and let Big Tech gobble up the current generation of cutting-edge tech – just like they did the last one,” she told the BBC.
When BBC News contacted the CMA for a response to these comments, they pointed us to Mr Bamford’s LinkedIn post, where he said: “We are not blind to the length of time that this investigation has taken… We know pace matters to business confidence and investment.”
He added the reason this investigation took so long was because the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI had been changing over that time.
In 2024, while Mr Bokkerink was chair, the CMA also issued similar “found not to qualify” decisions on other AI partnerships it reviewed involving firms including Microsoft, Amazon and Google.
In April of same year, the CMA’s chief executive Sarah Cardell said the body had “real concerns” about an “interconnected web” of AI partnerships between big tech firms.
But in a set of instructions to the CMA issued in February, the government said it should prioritise “pro-growth and pro-investment interventions”.
The same month the UK sided with the US in not signing an agreement on AI at a summit in Paris.
US Vice President JD Vance had told delegates that too much regulation of AI could “kill a transformative industry just as it’s taking off”.
“The CMA will be taking a less interventionist approach to protecting competition and to merger control reviews, [but] this does not mean the CMA will approve every deal presented to it without question,” said Chloe Birkett, competition lawyer at law firm Freeths.
“The CMA’s purpose is to help preserve competition in markets to ensure that consumers get a fair deal,” she said.
In a statement Microsoft said: “Our OpenAI partnership and its continued evolution promote competition, innovation, and responsible AI development, and we welcome the CMA’s conclusion, after careful and prudent consideration of the commercial realities, to close its investigation.”

1. Bamako, Mali

3. Nkrumah University, Zambia
The Nkrumah University in Zambia was originally opened in 1967 as Kabwe Teachers’ Training College, initially training junior secondary school teachers.
In 1971, Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda renamed the institution Nkrumah Teachers’ College in honour of Kwame Nkrumah.
Today, it has grown into a full-fledged university, offering Bachelor’s degrees in Agricultural Sciences, Engineering, and Education, as well as postgraduate studies in related fields.
The university operates across three campuses, with its main campus, Munkoyo Street Campus, located 3 km from the Kabwe city centre. It also facilitates international student exchange programmes, primarily within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
4. Azikiwe-Nkrumah Hall – Lincoln University, USA
Azikiwe-Nkrumah Hall, built in 1865, is the oldest building on the Lincoln University campus in the United States.
Originally constructed during the American Civil War, the building initially served as a residence for professors. Over time, it became the African Centre and currently houses campus security offices. The hall is named in honour of two distinguished alumni:

Afigya Kwabre South assembly calls for District Coordinating Director’s removal
Assembly Members in the Afigya Kwabre South Municipality have demanded the immediate removal of the District Coordinating Director, Yvonne Naboo, accusing her of unilaterally suspending the operationalization of a quarry fund meant to generate revenue for development projects.
According to the assembly, the fund was suspended following an illegal takeover of the revenue collection point by thugs after the 2024 elections.
The members argue that the decision to halt the fund was made without their consultation, affecting the municipality’s revenue mobilization efforts.
Speaking to Citi News on March 5, the Assembly Member for the Buoho Electoral Area, Evans Kusi Worae, expressed frustration over the move.
“Our district coordinating director unilaterally suspended the quarry fund without consulting the assembly members, whilst revenue mobilization is one of our main streams for district development.
“In that regard, we are demanding the removal of the district coordinating director since she took that decision alone. Once she’s ready to do a review and give us a detailed explanation informing her decision, we will insist on her removal.” he stated.
Additionally, Worae called on the government to pay the outstanding ex-gratia owed to assembly members, emphasizing their dedication and service to the people.
“It is the rightful entitlement of the assembly members. We have sacrificed our time and effort to serve the people. If they refuse to pay the remaining outstanding then it is a clear disregard for the work we have done.
“Even though they’ve started releasing the funds after our press conference, we hope they finish the payments”, he added.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, appeared before Parliament’s Committee of the Whole to address concerns about the $11.1 million furnishing cost for the central bank’s new headquarters in Accra.
The facility inaugurated on November 20, 2024, by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been at the centre of public scrutiny, with critics questioning the timing and expenditure amidst Ghana’s economic challenges.
Addressing the House, Dr Asiama said the old BoG building had structural defects and was no longer fit for purpose.
“Mr Speaker, furniture and furnishings were awarded at $11.1 million,” he stated, reaffirming that the project was necessary to enhance the bank’s efficiency and strengthen Ghana’s financial system.
The BoG Governor reassured Parliament of the central bank’s commitment to prudent financial management, noting that the new facility would align with the government’s broader agenda for economic stability and financial sector growth.
Despite the BoG’s justification, the project has faced public backlash, with some questioning the prioritisation of the new headquarters at a time when the country is dealing with economic constraints.
The central bank, however, insists that the facility will provide a secure, modern workspace for its staff, improving regulatory oversight and ensuring greater efficiency in managing Ghana’s financial sector.
While Dr Asiama remained confident in the project’s long-term benefits, the matter is expected to generate further debate as Parliament continues to scrutinise the central bank’s financial decisions.

“As I speak to you, there are 26 presidential staffers and four Directors. If you put together the total number of people who work at the Presidency where I operate from, they will not amount to 60 yet they had 337 political appointees,” he noted.

Waste management figures
In 2020, the global direct cost of waste management was estimated at USD 252 billion. When factoring in the hidden costs of pollution, adverse health effects, and climate change resulting from poor waste disposal practices, the total reached US$361 billion.
The International Day of Zero Waste emphasises the need to improve waste management worldwide and promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.
The Zero Waste initiative aims to minimize waste generation, maximise recycling, and foster a circular economy where resources are utilised efficiently.

Reverse Foreign Ministry Lands – Mahama Orders
President John Mahama has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately reverse all allocation and sale of lands belonging to the ministry.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who announced this said the decision was taken to safeguard state assets and prevent further encroachment on public lands.
He revealed in a Facebook post that the directive specifically affects lands adjoining the Foreign Affairs Ministry at Airport Residential, which had reportedly been allocated to seven organisations and individuals under the previous government.
“Yesterday’s presidential directive will ensure that the Ministry’s adjoining land at Airport Residential, which some seven organisations and individuals claim to be the new owners, would now be cancelled and preserved for the people of Ghana,” he stated.
The Minister expressed deep appreciation to President Mahama for his action in protecting state resources. He described the move as a demonstration of strong and patriotic leadership, ensuring that the Foreign Ministry retains control over its lands.
He said, “I am enormously grateful to President Mahama for his unwavering patriotic and decisive presidential backing”.
He assured Ghanaians that the leadership will be exceptional ensuring that state properties are protected.
“Under my watch as Foreign Minister, no land or property of the Ministry, located either home or abroad, would be sold,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

NPP suspends 17 additional members in Upper East Region
The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has suspended 17 members over alleged anti-party conduct.
Sixteen of the suspended persons are from the Tempane Constituency, and one is from the Builsa South Constituency.
This brings the total number of suspended members in the region to 23 after the party suspended six members from the Pusiga constituency a few days ago.

The Forum was on the theme: “From Insight to Impact for a Thriving Digital Economy.”
The Forum was attended by policy makers from multiple countries, heads of international industry associations,
consulting institution experts, and industry leaders.
He said the future-oriented industry policy would bring vitality to the digital economy.
“More digital talent needs to be trained to overcome the growing global talent shortage plaguing the digital and intelligent sectors,” he said.
Mr Wang said open and collaborative industry ecosystems make digital economies more resilient.
He said this was because ecosystems create a space for industry players around the world to collaborate and innovate. This space lets them build on each other’s strengths.
“A thriving digital economy needs a wide array of digital technologies,” he added.
He said no single country or company could do it all alone and that was why Huawei had been a longtime supporter of cross-region collaboration and robust industry ecosystems.
He said the digital economy had also become a major driver of global economic growth, and more than 170 countries have released dedicated national strategies on digital development.
“Digitalization remains uneven between various regions, but many report seeing some common challenges,” he said.
Mr Jeffrey Zhou, ICT Marketing President of Huawei, affirmed that “Huawei looks forward to working with industry partners to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.
He said from insight to impact, they would create a thriving digital economy.
He said more on Huawei’s research into the global digital economy could be found in the Global Digitalization Index that the company released in 2024.
This index is a tool that countries can use to assess the maturity of their own ICT industries.
It also provides recommendations for digital economy development.

Speaking to Citi News on Wednesday, March 5, at the maiden Fire Safety Awards ceremony, where institutions were recognized for adhering to fire safety measures, Eastern Regional Fire Service Commander ACFO Timothy Osafo-Affum emphasized the need for stricter enforcement.
“We always look for innovations, and we have realized that a lot of people are not complying with the regulations. One approach is awarding institutions that meet safety regulations, as we do today. The second phase will be enforcement and compliance,” he stated.
He urged institutions to take proactive steps to comply with fire safety laws, cautioning that after a few months of grace, the service will take firm action against defaulters.
Gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo sues VeryDarkMan for N1 billion over alleged defamation
…demands retraction videos, apology
Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a defamation lawsuit against blogger Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The suit stems from alleged defamatory statements made by VDM on social media, accusing Chinwo of involvement in a contractual dispute and the purported diversion of $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee.
The lawsuit, filed by Pelumi Olajengbesi, Chinwo’s legal representative, seeks an order compelling VDM to delete, retract, and issue a public apology for all allegedly false and defamatory statements made against Chinwo and her brand.
In support of her claims, Chinwo has furnished the court with documentary evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to substantiate that VDM’s allegations are entirely false.
Recall that on February 17, 2025, a Federal High Court in Lagos held that the arrest warrant against Ee Zee Tee over alleged fraudulent conversion subsists and adjourned the case until March 6, 2025 for the arraignment of the record label boss.
In the fresh defamation suit filed, Olajengbesi said VDM made the posts without provocation and with the apparent intention of lowering the Chinwo’s estimation in the eye of right-thinking members of the society.
Mercy Chinwo furnished the court with all documents and evidences to establish that all that very dark man has been saying are false.
He told the court that the VDM’s videos and posts are false and have caused significant harm to the Chinwo’s public image, reputation, professional standing and emotional well-being.
The lawyer said VDM made the posts on his Instagram handle on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 12th and 17th February 2025 accusing Chinwo of “going behind the record label to go and collect shows, she was collecting gigs and she was not remitting money to the record label”.
In the suit, Olajengbesi said VDM posted a series of videos to his millions of followers showing a “caricaturist and disdainful portrayal of the Claimant (Chinwo) as well the Defendant’s (VDM’s) bias towards the claim of Mr. EeZee T thereby deliberately ridiculing the position of the Claimant in the dispute between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T”.
“The Claimant avers that she has neither had any form of relationship with the Defendant nor was the Defendant involved in the issue between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T in any material particular.
“The Claimant avers that the statements which the Defendant made in the videos he published his Instagram page were as though the Defendant was personally involved in the issues between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T; however, these statements were not only false, but damning and injurious to the Claimant’s public image and reputation.”
The lawyer sought “an order of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to remove the defamatory posts from all his social media platforms.
“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to cause a retraction of the said defamatory statement in favour of the Claimant on all his social media platforms and to publish an unreserved apology to the Claimant in two widely circulated national dailies and all his social media platforms.
“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendants to write an unreserved apology to the Claimant and publish same in four national dailies, causing same to run for at least 14 consecutive days.
“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant the Sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) only as General Damages for defamation.
“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant, the Sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) only as Punitive and Aggravated Damages for the grossly defamatory statement.
“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay the sum of N25,000,000.00 (Twenty-Five Million Naira) as the cost of this suit.
“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay 10% (Ten percent) on the judgment sum per annum until final liquidation of the judgment sum by the Defendants.”
First Deputy Speaker blocks Minority’s motion on public service terminations
First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor has dismissed a private member’s motion from the Minority caucus seeking an investigation into the termination of public service appointments made after December 7, 2024.
The motion, introduced by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, alongside Okaikwei Central MP Patrick Boamah and Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah, argued that the dismissals violated good governance principles and citizens’ rights.
However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga opposed the motion, stating that the matter was already subject to legal proceedings.
Upholding the objection, Ahiafor ruled that debating the motion could lead to prejudicial remarks.
“There was a preliminary objection and the attention of the house has been drawn to a lawsuit pending before the Supreme Court as mentioned above. This action is challenging the constitutionality of the action of the chief of staff seeking a declaration and prohibition among others directed at the heads of government institutions to refrain from proceeding with the directive of the Chief of Staff.
“Honourable members, I have perused the writs and nine reliefs were sought. Honourable members, given our constitutional and procedural arrangement, permitting the motion and subsequent debates on the matter in question or constituting or mandating a committee of this house to do an enquiry into this matter will be a direct violation of our standing order particularly Standing Order 103,” he stated.
Compensation, others impeding work progress on Ofankor-Nsawam road – Project Manager

Accra, March 05, GNA – Mr Mahama Abdulai, the Project Manager for the Ofankor-Nsawam road project, has attributed the lack of progress on the corridor to the outstanding compensations yet to be paid to affected persons.
He also identified the difficulty in relocating utility lines as well as ongoing litigations as major factors affecting work on the stretch.
Construction work on the 33.4km road commenced in 2022 and was expected to be completed in July 2024.
However, work slowed down in November 2024.
Briefing Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, during an inspection tour on Thursday, Mr Mahama said the unpaid compensation to some affected persons was a major cause for the delay of work.
For instance, he indicated that at Amasaman where a three-tier interchange was to be constructed the contractor had not had access to the land due to compensation issues.
“Those compensation have two issues – the contractor actually valued the accessed property which is being disputed by a section of the affected claimants, which is being contested with the land valuation people so that they do the certification,” he explained.
Additionally, he said, the plethora of court cases had affected the project, stressing that currently, there were over 80 court cases which were being addressed by the contractor and the Ghana Highway Authority.
“Some of them have been cleared, but others are still out there, especially from the Amasaman area towards Nsawam, Hebron, Medie and Samsam Junction, and the Nsawam proper around the Blue Skies area,” he said.
The Project Manager added that the relocation of utility lines such as high-tension poles on both sides of the road remained a challenge.
“So, the issues we have now are the compensation issues, the legal issues, and the relocation, which are actually taking a toll on the progress of the works by the contractor side,” Mr Mahama emphasised.
Work on the project is currently 75 per cent complete.
Mr Mahama assured the Minister of the contractor’s commitment to complete the project on time, urging him to address the challenges that were confronting the project which also included financial constraints.
Mr Agbodza said the project was a priority of the government in easing the stress of Ghanaians, urging the contractor to expedite work on the it.
“Indeed, if they have done about 75 per cent of the work, that is significant amount of work done already, that is why we are saying that if it is left with 25 per cent of work to be done all we are expecting is that, of course, if they’ve run out of money, we are not expecting them to be working at the same pace as if nothing is wrong.
“But the fact that they were almost non-existent on the site and today we can some of the things the public was complaining about are being done,” he said.
Also, he reiterated government’s commitment to complete the project and all other ongoing road projects, as well as honour all payment owed contractors.
The Ofankor-Nsawam section of the National Route Six (N6) serves as a major arterial road for communities in the Ga West Municipal Assembly, Pokuase, Amasaman, Medie, Sarpeiman, among others.
It also serves as a vital link for trade between Ghana and its neighbouring landlocked countries – Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, and for transit cargo to move from the country’s ports to those destinations.
The project is funded by the Government of Ghana at a cost of GH¢342.48 million and being constructed by Maripoma Enterprise Limited, a local construction firm.
The Minister also inspected work on the 17km dualisation of the Tema-Aflao and the Tema Roundabout to Akosombo road projects where he demanded similar actions to ensure their timely completion.
He was accompanied by Mr Alhassan Suhuniyi, Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways as well as directors of the ministry and the Ghana Highways Authority.

While short-term price changes may not immediately impact the economy, long-term increases in fuel prices slow down economic growth and development.
One major reason for rising fuel prices in Ghana is inflation. When inflation is high, the cost of fuel also rises. Another factor is the exchange rate. As cedi weakens, importing fuel becomes more expensive, resulting in higher pump prices.
Global crude oil prices also influence fuel price fluctuations. Managing these factors effectively can help stabilize fuel prices and protect the economy.
Reducing effects of fuel hikes
To reduce the negative effects of high fuel prices, policymakers need to take strategic actions. One key step is to review and adjust fuel taxes. Levies like the Special Petroleum Tax and the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy should be reconsidered to keep fuel prices affordable.
This is especially important during times of global price hikes when consumers and businesses struggle with higher costs.
Controlling inflation and exchange rates is another essential policy measure. The government must implement strong monetary policies to keep inflation low and maintain a stable cedi. Increasing foreign exchange reserves and promoting local production can help prevent extreme fuel price hikes caused by currency depreciation. These actions will create a more stable economy and reduce the burden on consumers.
The country should also establish fuel reserves to prepare for future price hikes. By storing fuel when prices are low, the government can release reserves during crises to prevent sudden price spikes. This strategy ensures fuel availability at stable prices, helping businesses and households plan better and avoid economic shocks.
Finding alternative fuel sources
A long-term solution is investing in alternative energy sources like solar, wind, and biofuels. Ghana depends heavily on imported petroleum, which makes the country vulnerable to price changes. By promoting renewable energy and encouraging private sector investments in clean energy, Ghana can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and ensure a more sustainable and stable energy supply.
Finally, transparency in fuel pricing is essential. The government should clearly communicate how fuel prices are determined and involve key stakeholders in the decision-making process. This will prevent unnecessary price increases by suppliers and ensure that consumers pay a fair price.
As Ghana navigates global economic challenges, it is crucial to tackle fuel price issues with effective policies. By managing inflation, exchange rates, and pricing strategies, the country can reduce the negative effects of fuel price fluctuations. Investing in renewable energy and increasing transparency in the fuel market will further strengthen the economy.
Now is the time to take decisive action to protect Ghana’s economic growth and secure a stable future for all citizens.

A segment of Ghanaians has voiced their opinions on the controversy surrounding the renaming of Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
Among those advocating for a change is Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The airport is named after Lt. General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, one of the alleged masterminds behind the 1966 coup that overthrew Dr. Nkrumah’s government.
Critics argue that Kotoka was a treasonous general and believe that naming the airport after him is an undeserved accolade.
Amid this controversy, we took to the streets to gather public opinion on the matter.
One respondent told GhanaWeb TV: “I feel like we have more important things to focus on other than name change and all that. So if the name change is going to have a major significance, as I said, then why not? If not, then I don’t think it’s necessary. Plus, if he’s part of the people who took out Nkrumah, I mean, it’s in the past. It doesn’t change anything. Whether we change the name or not, it doesn’t really have any effect right now. So I don’t think it’s necessary.”
“Let’s just focus on more important and pressing issues,” he added.
Another said “Well, if the major rationale behind the change of the name is to actually say good stuff about Nkrumah, then why not? Because first of all, what we need to consider is between these two, which is Kotoka and Nkrumah, who is more popular? Who is more famous? Who has a good name?”
“And so I believe it’s sensible enough if we change the name to Nkrumah. Apart from Nkrumah, JJ Rawlings, John Evans, I even wish the current president would be named after Nkrumah. So I think it’s a good initiative.”

BoG Governor’s HQ cost presentation clears misconduct suspicions – Habib Iddrisu
Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP, Habib Iddrisu, has expressed the Minority’s satisfaction with the cost breakdown of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters project, stating that it dispels suspicions of financial misconduct.
BoG Governor Johnson Asiama informed Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, that as of February 2025, approximately $230 million had been paid towards the project, with an outstanding $31.8 million still due. He also disclosed that $48.3 million had been paid in taxes and levies related to the construction.
Governor Asiama further detailed the costs of key project components: ICT systems and network infrastructure at $8.6 million, integrated electronic systems at $15.8 million, and furniture and furnishings at $11.1 million.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Iddrisu emphasized that the governor’s breakdown enhances transparency and eliminates suspicions of financial misconduct.
When asked about the project’s cost rising from $81 million to $261 million after a redesign, he justified the increase, citing the added amenities.
“Let me alone with what the governor presented was satisfying. We were satisfied with it and felt he presented a clear picture and itemized everything. Even our colleagues in the Majority who thought there was something fishy there could not even ask questions.
“They thought he was coming to say a lot of things. But if you look at exactly what was going to be done, you cannot say that it was very high,” he stated.
National Chairman is the leader of our party – John Boadu
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary John Boadu has reiterated that the National Chairman is the leader of the party, according to its constitution.
He said it is only when the chairman fails to perform their duties effectively that someone else could potentially take on a leadership role.
“The National Chairman is the leader of the party. It is only when you do not perform your duties well that someone can override your position,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.
He made it clear that there is no ambiguity in the party’s constitution regarding leadership.
“There is nothing in our party that says otherwise,” he added.
Mr. Boadu explained that the chairman leads all party meetings, including those with Presidents, Members of Parliament (MPs), or other officials, adding that this structure is distinct from that of other political parties, particularly the NDC.
“Even if we have a President or MPs, the chairman is the leader of the party and chairs all the meetings. We are not like the NDC because they are a socialist party,” he noted.
He stated that there is no provision in the NPP’s constitution that suggests the president or a presidential candidate takes precedence over the chairman in party matters.
In response to questions about leadership within the party, Mr. Boadu clarified that while some may consider changing the title of the leader, the NPP’s constitution does not support this idea.
“The only proposal I will bring is to make a leader in the constitution, as there is nothing like a leader in our current constitution,” he said.
Boadu also addressed the issue of sycophancy within the party, acknowledging that some members may try to elevate others beyond their roles.
“Sometimes sycophancy is a problem, as they always want to think otherwise,” he concluded.
Independence Day budget cut by 90% – Kwakye Ofosu
The Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that this year’s 68th Independence Day celebrations will cost only a tenth of the amount spent last year.
The scaled-down event, set to take place at Jubilee House on March 6, reflects the government’s commitment to fiscal prudence while preserving the significance of the occasion.
Speaking on preparations, Kwakye Ofosu explained that the event has been significantly streamlined to reduce costs.
“In the past, there were 60 contingents made up of 60 men and women each. So we are talking close to 3,600 men and women and thousands of children who march.
“Now, everything has been scaled down to a little over 500 people. That includes both security personnel and schoolchildren who will be performing. This is to ensure that we do not incur the kind of costs we did in the past.
“I can reveal to you that the celebrations to be held here on Thursday will cost a tenth of what it took to host this event in Koforidua last year. That event cost GH₵15 million. What will be held here tomorrow will cost a tenth of that,” he stated.
Kwakye Ofosu further clarified that reducing the scale of the event does not diminish its importance.
“The scaled-down events in no way undermine the significance of the day. The Independence Day celebration is one that President Mahama takes very seriously. He believes it must be celebrated, but in a manner that allows us to make savings that can be redirected into other areas of expenditure,” he stated.

Traders decry high food costs despite falling fuel prices
Traders are lamenting the rising cost of foodstuffs, citing multiple economic factors such as high labour costs and expenses incurred in transporting goods from farms and rural areas.
Despite a general slowdown in inflation for January 2025, food inflation remains a major concern, increasing to 28.3% from 27.8% in December 2024.
While the recent reduction in fuel prices has offered some relief, traders argue that the overall cost of doing business in the food sector remains high.
Transportation costs, influenced by fuel prices significantly contribute to the final pricing of foodstuffs in urban markets.
Additionally, labour costs in the agricultural sector continue to rise, further adding to the price pressures on foods.
“Everything is now expensive. Even potatoes, which were once unpopular, are now costly, with a bag selling for GHȼ2,500 or GHȼ2,200. Small potatoes are sold for GHȼ30 or GHȼ50. I don’t believe the reduction in fuel prices affects food prices.
“Labourers are contracted to harvest cassava, pack it into bags, and carry it to the roadside before transporting it. Sometimes, it is not taken directly to Accra but first to a junction before being loaded onto a vehicle bound for Accra.
“If an item costs GHȼ10 at its origin, it will be GHȼ30 by the time it reaches Accra,” Ama Serwaa, a trader at Makola, told Citi Business News.
Some oil marketing companies have begun marginally reducing fuel prices at the pump following the start of the first pricing window in March.
This marks the second consecutive reduction after three successive price hikes earlier this year.
Total Energies has led the latest adjustment, lowering the price of both petrol and diesel from GHS 15.99 in the second pricing window of February to GHS 15.79 per liter in the first pricing window of March.
Shell has also adjusted it fuel prices downward for the first pricing window of March. The price of petrol has been reduced from GHS 15.89 per litre in the second pricing window of February to GHS 15.72 per litre.
Similarly, diesel now sells at GHS 15.77 per litre, down from GHS 15.99 per litre in the previous pricing window.
Despite this downward trend in fuel prices, traders insist that structural challenges continue to exert upward pressure on food prices.
“I don’t believe fuel prices have been reduced. We can’t afford to buy the items, and when we complain, they blame it on transport fares,” Azumah Adwine,a trader, also said.
While the reduction in fuel prices offers some relief, the persistent high cost of food suggests that multiple economic factors are at play.
“At this time of the year, the prices of yam, plantain, and cassava are high. Food prices are expected to decrease in June, July, and August. When fuel prices rise, the cost of everything increases. If fuel prices drop, the prices of all goods not just food items should also decrease, making them more affordable for everyone,” Patricia Opoku Darko, a trader, said.

KNUST TCC-CIMET launches Engineering Design Competition on circular economy
As part of the 2025 World Engineering Day Celebration, the KNUST Technology Consultancy Centre has launched its inaugural Engineering Design Competition.
The competition, themed “Circular Economy Champions: Challenging the Next Generation of West African Subregion Engineers to Turn Waste into Wealth through Design Competition,” aims to challenge engineering student associations in the West African sub-region to transform waste materials into valuable products, promoting innovative thinking and sustainable practices.
Professor Francis Davis, Director-General of TCC-CIMET, highlighted the benefits for participating students.
“By participating, you will gain invaluable experience, receive mentorship from industry leaders, and develop skills that will set you apart in the competitive world of engineering,” he said. “More importantly, your work will contribute to solving pressing challenges such as waste management, pollution, resource scarcity, and climate change, all while shaping the future of a sustainable Africa.”
He also called on industries and interested individuals to support the initiative. “We call on industry leaders, academics, and policymakers to support these young engineers,” he said. “We need the guidance and expertise of experienced professionals to mentor and collaborate with us so that we can make this happen.” He also invited them to join as partners.
Ing. Isaac Bedu, Registrar of the Engineering Council, encouraged students to ensure their solutions meet national and international engineering standards. “As we celebrate innovation, we must ensure our solutions meet national and international engineering standards,” he said. “The Engineering Council exists to uphold the integrity of our profession, ensuring every engineering solution deployed in Ghana is safe, reliable, and built to last.”
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority, Mr. Akim Tijani encouraged students to find practical solutions for Africa’s growing waste problem.
The competition is open to all Engineering Students’ Associations across the West African sub-region. To be eligible, students must form groups of 5 to 7 members, with each group including at least one female participant and at least one member from a different interdisciplinary program.
