0

Few individuals can boast of a year as monumental as Dr. Nick Danso Adjei, the Executive Chairman of Ghana Link Network Services Limited, who has achieved an extraordinary feat: receiving many prestigious awards in 2024 but also receiving awards at the hands of two of Ghana’s most important leaders, outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President-Elect John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Danso Adjei’s groundbreaking contributions to Ghana’s economic and trade development were recognized on two grand stages, underscoring his pivotal role in revolutionizing the nation’s trade facilitation landscape and reaffirming his dedication to national progress.

At the prestigious 8th Ghana CEO Summit, President-Elect John Dramani Mahama presented Dr. Nick Danso Adjei with the coveted Best Maritime and Trade CEO of the Year award. This accolade celebrated his visionary leadership in implementing the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), a transformative tool that has:

  • Enhanced efficiency in clearing goods at Ghana’s ports, airports, and land borders.
  • Simplified workflows, enabling faster and more transparent trade operations.
  • Increased government revenue, solidifying ICUMS as a cornerstone of Ghana’s fiscal strategy.

Speaking at the event, President-Elect Mahama lauded Dr. Danso Adjei as a beacon of entrepreneurial excellence.

Recognized by the Outgoing President: The Grand Medal Award

In another development, just a few days to the end of the year, Dr. Danso Adjei was honored and presented with the Grand Medal Award by the outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the National Honours and Awards Ceremony. This prestigious recognition from the state acknowledged his tireless efforts in driving national development through technological innovation and efficient trade systems.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted ICUMS as a transformative initiative, noting its critical role in improving government revenue collection and streamlining operations at key entry points across the country, during his address the outgoing President stated:

“Dr. Nick Danso Adjei’s leadership exemplifies the impact of innovation and dedication. His work with ICUMS has set a new standard for trade facilitation, not only in Ghana but across Africa.”

A Year of Remarkable Achievements

Dr. Danso Adjei’s ability to receive awards from two of Ghana’s most prominent leaders in the same year is a testament to his unique position as an entrepreneur figure in the nation’s development narrative. While some may call him “lucky,” it is his hard work, innovation, and unwavering commitment to Ghana’s progress that have brought him this recognition.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Danso Adjei expressed gratitude for the honors, dedicating them to his team at Ghana Link Network Services Limited:

“These awards are not just about me but about the collective effort of a team committed to excellence and national development. They inspire us to continue delivering solutions that make a meaningful impact.”

A Man with Ghana at Heart

Beyond his achievements with ICUMS, Dr. Danso Adjei’s ventures in the energy sector, including Misyl Energy and Nick Petroleum, demonstrate his dedication to diversifying Ghana’s economy and creating sustainable growth opportunities. His work consistently reflects a profound commitment to leveraging innovation for the betterment of the nation.

Dr. Nick Danso Adjei stands out as a rare example of an entrepreneur who bridges divides and garners recognition beyond the shores of Ghana. His accolades from both President Nana Akufo-Addo and President-Elect John Mahama symbolize a shared acknowledgement of his transformative contributions to Ghana’s development.

As the nation looks ahead, figures like Dr. Danso Adjei remind Ghanaians of the power of vision, innovation, and collaboration in building a prosperous future. His story is one of inspiration, proving that hard work and dedication to national progress will always be celebrated, regardless of who holds the reins of power.

The interesting features that earned attiéké a UNESCO status

0

Attiéké, Ivory Coast’s beloved staple made from fermented cassava flour, was recently added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

Pronounced “atchekay,” this ground cassava couscous, often eaten with grilled fish, is enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Originally from Ivory Coast’s coastal areas centuries ago, attiéké has become popular across West Africa, according to the BBC.

Ivory Coast’s UNESCO delegate, Ramata Ly-Bakayoko, noted at the 19th session on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in Paraguay that attiéké is “deeply rooted in the daily lives of its communities.”

In Ivory Coast, attiéké is commonly served at weddings, baptisms, funerals, and community meetings.

Attiéké is more than a meal; it’s a livelihood and a path to financial autonomy for many women.

Traditionally made by women and girls, the process, which can take several days, involves peeling, grating, and mixing cassava root with previously fermented cassava.

The skills required to make attiéké have also been added to UNESCO’s heritage list.

The pulp of cassava is pressed to remove starch, then manually processed, dried, and steamed before being sold in local markets, typically in plastic bags containing a single ball of attiéké.

At its core, attiéké is a cultural connection passed down from mother to daughter, with its recipes, processes, and methods forming a key part of both individual and national identity, according to Ly-Bakayoko.

UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage highlights practices at risk, underscoring the need for preservation.

The inclusion of attiéké emphasizes its global cultural significance.

However, the dish has often sparked controversy, particularly in 2019, when Florence Bassono, founder of Faso Attiéké from Burkina Faso, won an award at the Abidjan International Agriculture Show, causing outrage in Ivory Coast.

Many Ivorians were upset that a foreigner won an award for their national dish, attiéké.

In response, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization registered a collective trademark earlier this year to prevent cassava from other countries from being sold under the name attiéké, similar to how champagne must be produced in France’s Champagne region.

CETAG declares indefinite strike on January 2 over unresolved grievances

0

File photo of Accra College of Education File photo of Accra College of Education

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike effective Thursday, January 2, 2025.

The announcement follows an Emergency National Council meeting held on December 30, 2024, where members resolved to take industrial action in response to unresolved issues with the government and other stakeholders.

According to a statement released by CETAG on December 31, 2024, the decision to strike follows repeated failures by the National Labour Commission (NLC) and other stakeholders to address critical concerns despite multiple notifications.

The key concerns outlined by CETAG include the government’s non-compliance with the National Labour Commission’s arbitration awards, the delayed migration of teaching staff onto affiliate universities’ pay structures, unpaid compensation for all-year-round work done in 2022, prolonged delays in issuing appointment letters based on staff audit reports, unpaid book and research allowances for staff at Akrokerri College of Education, and the lack of enforcement by the NLC to compel compliance with its directives.

“The employer’s continuous violation of signed agreements and roadmaps on the outstanding compulsory arbitration award issued by the NLC on May 2, 2023, has left us with no choice,” it noted.

The strike, according to CETAG, aligns with section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), emphasising that the action has become imperative due to the government’s persistent violation of signed agreements and roadmaps regarding the compulsory arbitration award issued by the NLC on May 2, 2023.

“Conclusively, the National Council of CETAG wishes to state unequivocally that members of the union shall not under any circumstance return to the colleges to undertake any official duties including teaching, and supervision of project work and macro-teaching, until the last pesewa is paid into our accounts,” it stated.

The strike is expected to significantly disrupt academic activities across Ghana’s colleges of education, including teaching and supervision of project work.

Stakeholders in the education sector, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the NLC, are being urged to act swiftly to prevent further disruptions.

Set up a foreign remittance unit at the Central Bank – Mahama government urged

0

Bank of Ghana Headquarters Bank of Ghana Headquarters

A banking consultant, Dr. Richmond Atuahene, says the incoming President, John Dramani Mahama, must set up a remittances unit at the Central Bank to track Ghana’s foreign remittances.

Speaking on GHOne TV, Dr. Atuahene disclosed that the figures on Ghana’s remittances are significant, but very little passes through the banking sector.

According to him, if the incoming administration focuses on the remittance sector, the nation will avoid borrowing from the World Bank or begging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for US$3 billion.

“The first thing I want to advise the incoming President is that he must strengthen the remittance system or even create a new unit at the Central Bank. For instance, Bangladesh tracks 95% of remittances through its banking system, while in Ghana, we only track about 50%. The other 50% does not go into the banking system,” Dr. Atuahene explained.

“In 2023, the World Bank reported US$4.7 billion in remittances, but we only tracked US$2.8 billion, leaving US$1.9 billion unaccounted for. Previously, when the total remittance was US$4.2 billion, we tracked only US$2.1 billion. Those funds are lost. However, if we implement a strong tracking system, we will be able to capture more of the remittances,” he stated.

Dr. Atuahene continued, “Once we are able to track remittances properly, it will help manage the economy, stabilize the cedi, and reduce inflation.”

The banking consultant also advised President-elect John Mahama to assemble a team of technocrats who will help devise strategies to finance the nation’s substantial debts owed to contractors.

“He must appoint people who understand microeconomic issues to help him. This will be a significant advantage for him. The next challenge will be financing the debts, including the US$31 million owed to contractors and energy sector debts,” he added.

“His Excellency must form a team like the one in place in 2010. They need a credible arrears repayment plan so that, within three or four years, the debts can be cleared, without creating new ones. If this is done, the challenge becomes surmountable. With the right brains and technical people, and if they are allowed to help, they can achieve a lot in four years.”

“Even remittances alone will be bigger than the IMF loan. If we track the remittances properly, we will not need to beg for US$3 billion,” Dr. Atuahene concluded.

0

By Nastain Ibn Saliu

Kete-Krachi (O/R), Jan 2, GNA – Mr Jonathan Akpabe, the Oti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged members of the party to remain united and focused following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Akpabe acknowledged the disappointment felt by many NPP supporters but stressed the importance of resilience and a renewed commitment to the party’s future.

“This year didn’t turn out as we had hoped. We aimed to break the ‘8,’ but the Ghanaian people have made their choice, and we must respect it. However, this is not the end of the journey for the NPP or for Ghana,” he stated.

He called on party members to avoid despair, emphasising that setbacks in politics are common.

“In every election, there’s a possibility of winning or losing. This time, we lost. But it is important to remember that we have not lost our vision for Ghana. We remain committed to building a better future,” he said.

Mr. Akpabe revealed that the party would undertake a thorough review of its strategies to address weaknesses and come back stronger.

“We will regroup, re-strategize, and plan effectively to reclaim our position. Our focus is on working harder and smarter to earn the trust of Ghanaians once again,” he assured.

He also expressed hope that the incoming government will continue policies initiated by the NPP, including the Free Senior High School programme and allowances for teachers and nurses.

“These initiatives have had a significant impact on the lives of Ghanaians, and we hope they are sustained,” he noted.

Despite the pain of the loss, Mr. Akpabe urged members to see this moment as an opportunity for growth and renewal. “This is a time for reflection and unity. Let us rebuild together and emerge stronger as a party,” he emphasised.

In a message of goodwill, he wished all NPP members and the people of the Oti Region a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year, expressing optimism for the party’s future.

Edudzi Tameklo warns against ‘slippery path’ in Tema Central mandamus case

0

Godwin Tameklo, legal counsel for NDC Godwin Tameklo, legal counsel for NDC

In the latest legal tussle surrounding the contentious Tema Central parliamentary election, Godwin Tameklo, legal counsel for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticized the arguments made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in court.

The NPP contends that Ebi Bright, the declared winner of the December 7, 2024 election, was not properly certified by an Electoral Commission (EC) official.

During a heated session, Tameklo urged the court to focus on its role within the scope of the mandamus application and not veer into uncharted territory.

“It is not the duty of this court to determine who won an election,” Tameklo argued.

“They are inviting you onto a very slippery path. If, in a mandamus application, it is within the remit of this court to make findings on alleged thuggery, intimidation, duress, and breaches of the law, what then will we do in an election petition?”

The case stems from disputes over the legitimacy of the declaration process in Tema Central.

Meanwhile, Tameklo presented to the court a letter authored by Charles Forson, one of the NPP applicants, in which he urged the Electoral Commission to instruct the returning officer to accurately compile and announce the results in compliance with legal standards.

School Feeding Caterers begin receiving outstanding salaries

0

Caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme have started receiving their overdue payments for the third term, according to the National President of the School Feeding Caterers Association, Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi.

This progress follows a promise made by the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, to settle the arrears.

Speaking to Citi News, Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi explained that while some caterers have successfully accessed their funds, others face delays due to bank holidays and limited banking facilities in rural areas.

“Thankfully, they kept their word and made the payment on 31st December around 6 p.m. Some caterers were able to access the money on 1st January because certain banks have e-zwich machines outside.

“However, others have reported difficulties in accessing the funds. Hopefully, by 2nd January, everyone will receive their alerts. The delay is largely due to today being a holiday, and caterers in rural areas without easy access to banks may need to wait until regular working days to confirm receipt,” she explained.

Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi also expressed hope that the arrears owed to caterers since 2019 would soon be addressed.

“The chief accountant contacted me on 31st December regarding the 2019 arrears. I will meet with them on 2nd January to discuss this further. We are optimistic about receiving positive news next week,” she added.

Background

The recent payments to caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme follow months of frustration and protest.

On December 30, scores of caterers staged a demonstration at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, demanding payment for arrears covering two academic terms for 2023 and 2024.

The caterers, who had traveled from various parts of the country, expressed their disappointment with the government’s repeated delays.

Despite assurances from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department that funds had been released to the Ministry, the caterers claimed they had yet to receive any payments.

President of the School Feeding Caterers Association, described the situation as dire, highlighting the financial strain on members who pre-financed meals with the expectation of timely reimbursement.

She noted that the government had promised on multiple occasions to settle their debts, but deadlines in August, September, and November all passed without payment.

The caterers’ decision to protest was a last resort, as many faced mounting pressure from creditors. Their demands for transparency and accountability came after the government issued a statement lacking an official signature promising payment by December 31. Skeptical of the promise, the caterers voiced their frustrations, citing years of unmet commitments.

Koku Anyidoho backs Mahama’s plan to rebuild Ghana with prayer and hard work

Former Deputy General Secretary of NDC Samuel Koku Anyidoho Former Deputy General Secretary of NDC Samuel Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has expressed support for the Mahama-led administration’s vision of resetting Ghana through a foundation of hard work and fervent prayer.

President-elect John Mahama has consistently emphasized that both prayer and hard work will be the backbone of the country’s governance when he assumes office.

Siding with this approach in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on January 1, 2024, Koku Anyidoho outlined his belief in the power of prayer, referencing the late President John Atta Mills’ style of leadership, which was deeply rooted in hard work and prayer.

“I saw President Mills work hard and also depend on his belief in God through fervent prayers. He personally prayed before and after every Cabinet meeting. I personally believe in prayers. If we are resetting to the days of fervent prayer and hard work, great yes. Ghana 🇬🇭 First praying,” he stated.

It would be recalled that during Mahama’s 2024 election campaign, he pledged to declare a ‘National Day of Prayer’ if elected, stating his commitment to seeking God’s guidance in governance.

Since his victory, Mahama has reiterated his commitment to embarking on prayers.

In his New Year message, Mahama pledged, “This is the time we need to engage in fervent prayers more than we did during the campaign, for God to grant us the strength and wisdom to implement measures that will make Ghana a better place to live. All I will say is that it is finished; God has already done it.

“We will work tirelessly to correct the outgoing administration’s many wrongs, tackle corruption with dogged determination, and reduce excessive government expenditures.”
