Power crisis looms as government needs $90m to avert ‘dumsor’ – GRIDCo report

0

The country’s power grid is on the brink of a major crisis as the government urgently requires nearly $90 million to secure fuel for thermal power plants, according to a report by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

The report warns of potential power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” if immediate action is not taken.

GRIDCo’s report highlights that the funds are needed to purchase liquid fuel, such as light crude oil, to keep thermal plants in Tema operational and meet rising electricity demand.

The shortage stems from a generation capacity deficit following a pigging exercise by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO).

This maintenance activity temporarily disrupted natural gas supplies, leaving thermal plants without sufficient fuel.

To address the imminent crisis, GRIDCo has outlined several measures to stabilise the grid, including:

1. Rescheduling Maintenance: Revising planned shutdowns of generators to avoid overlapping with the WAPCO maintenance period.

2. Alternative Fuels: Procuring sufficient light crude oil or other liquid fuels to replace natural gas in thermal power generation.

3. Load Management: Considering load-shedding as a last resort to stabilize the grid if power shortages persist.

Pipeline Maintenance Delayed to 2025

The crisis was exacerbated by the maintenance of gas pipelines from Nigeria to Ghana by WAPCO, initially scheduled for October 2024 but postponed to January 2025 by the previous government.

This delay left the system vulnerable to disruptions during the maintenance period.

“There is a deficit in generation capacity during the period of the WAPCO pigging exercise. Therefore, it is necessary to procure liquid fuel to operate thermal plants in Tema to meet demand,” the report stated.

GRIDCo stated that $89.90 million is urgently required to avert the looming power outages and ensure grid stability.

The report warns that failure to act swiftly could lead to prolonged power outages, severely disrupting economic activities and public services.

Industries, businesses, and households may face significant challenges if the government does not secure funding and implement the recommended measures.

Stakeholders have called for expedited government intervention to raise the necessary funds and execute GRIDCo’s recommendations.

The urgency of the situation has sparked nationwide concern, with many fearing a return to the dreaded era of frequent and unpredictable power cuts.

As the clock ticks, the onus is on the government to act decisively and prevent Ghana from slipping into a full-blown power crisis.

Report suspected infiltrators of government institutions

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Nii Ashie Moore The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Nii Ashie Moore

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Ashie Moore, has called on party members to remain vigilant and report any suspected unlawful activities in connection with infiltration of government institutions to appropriate authorities.

He pointed out the importance of following due process, urging party members to avoid taking matters into their own hands.

Ashie Moore also warned against engaging in revengeful actions that could undermine the credibility of their complaints.

In a video shared on X by CITI FM, Ashie Moore said, “Let me use this opportunity to encourage members of our party in this region to be vigilant, rather to make sure that they will report such unlawful activities to me as a regional chairman or to the appropriate authorities at the regional police command for them to take a lawful action rather than to go there and to be accused of that things that we’re complaining of is what we’ve come to massively engage in.”

The NDC chairman also addressed allegations that certain individuals suspected to be members of the NDC were engaging in illegal operations at the Tema Harbor, government establishments and warehouses, while he was waiting for some party faithfuls at the airport.

“Currently, I’m at the airport to welcome some NDC faithful… But the allegation was made that they were at Tema harbour and some government establishment and some warehouse. That was the allegation that was made,” he noted.

Moore also disclosed that he had met with the regional police commander and his team to ensure that state establishments and institutions in the region are adequately protected.

He further assured that law and order will prevail within the next 24 hours.

He said, “Today, I’ve had a meeting with the regional commander and his team and we’ve all agreed that they are now going to make sure they protect this state establishments and institutions. So, I can promise you that within 24 hours, everything will become a law and order prevail within the region.”

Dr Forson indicated that while all four independent MPs have confirmed their stance, only Kwame Asare Obeng, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has officially communicated his decision to the Majority Caucus.

The remaining three MPs, Ohene Kwame Frimpong (MP for Asante Akim North), Nandaya Yaw Stanley (MP for Wulensi), and Worlasi Kpeli (MP for Afram Plains North) have been directed to formally notify the Majority Caucus and the Speaker of their decision for validation.

“Currently, we have received letters from all four of them. So, Mr. Speaker, we’ll wait for them to officially write to you.

Barcelona defeat Athletic without Olmo to reach Spanish Super Cup final

0

Young starlets Gavi and Lamine Yamal fired Barcelona, without Dani Olmo after his licence to play was revoked, into the Spanish Super Cup final with a 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao.

Spanish playmaker Olmo was cleared to play again on a temporary basis before the game on Wednesday, but the decision came too late for him or Pau Victor, in the same position, to feature against Copa del Rey winners Athletic.

Gavi put Barcelona ahead from close range after 17 minutes and teenage winger Yamal netted the second early after the break.

Spanish and European champions Real Madrid face cup runners-up Mallorca on Thursday in the second semifinal.

“We don’t care [who we face in the final]. It will be hard and we want to win it, which is the important thing, and go back home with the trophy,” Yamal told Movistar after the game.

Barcelona, who qualified as La Liga runners-up, started brightly and Raphinha volleyed over from a fine Jules Kounde cross and forced Unai Simon into a good save with a free-kick.

It was no surprise when the Catalans broke the deadlock with Alejandro Balde cutting the ball back for Gavi, playing in Olmo’s attacking midfield role, to turn home.

The 20-year-old pointed at an imaginary watch in his celebration, a nod to Olmo, who regularly produces the same gesture after scoring.

At the other end, Inaki Williams dallied on the ball too long as Athletic’s best attacking move of the first half broke down.

Yamal, 17, should have added Barcelona’s second after Raphinha’s shot was saved but miscued an attempted lob.

Wojciech Szczesny, on his second start in goal for Barcelona, made a good save to keep Inaki Williams at bay before the break.

Barcelona doubled their lead early in the second half when Gavi slipped in Yamal who finished with aplomb.

“Athletic are a very physical team that make you run a lot. We suffered above all towards the end, but we were able to play well, and we’re very happy,” Yamal added.

Veteran Polish forward Robert Lewandowski spurned a fine chance to add the third, firing off-target when well-placed.

Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde, who was sacked as Barcelona boss after a defeat at the same stadium in 2020, brought on Nico Williams to try and turn the game around.

The Spain international, heavily linked with Barcelona in the summer, was not fit enough to start, but made a positive impact from the bench.

The winger set up Oscar de Marcos to strike, but the Athletic defender had strayed just offside and the goal was ruled out.

Inaki Williams also had a goal ruled out for offside after Frenkie de Jong’s poor back-pass took a slight deflection off Alvaro Djalo on its way to the Ghana international.

Barcelona secured their victory and await their opponents in Sunday’s final, in which Olmo will be allowed to feature.

Israel eyes groundbreaking partnerships with Ghana

0

Israel’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sharren Haskel, has expressed her nation’s readiness to collaborate with Ghana across key sectors, aiming to foster development for both countries.

Her remarks came during her first official visit to Ghana, which included attending the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama’s second term on Tuesday (7 January) at Independence Square in Accra.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday (8 January) at the Embassy of the State of Israel in Accra, Haskel highlighted Ghana’s potential for partnerships in agriculture, technology, and cultural initiatives, following discussions with President Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

She spoke about the Vice President’s passion for agriculture and food security, describing it as a promising area for collaboration.

“I think there’s many collaborations that we can do together,” Haskel said. “Our former Prime Minister Golda Meir, she had a very special place in her heart for the African nations because she’s really identified with them and she saw how we can really share knowledge and also tools to advance and develop all of our nations.”

Haskel also emphasised Israel’s expertise in advanced farming techniques, suggesting that these could help Ghana address food security challenges.

“I think that Israel has proven itself, especially economically, in how to develop industries [and] advance technology; for example, in farming,” she stated.

“The deputy president was really focused on farming; she’s really worried about food security and so we have much of advanced technology in the farming industry, so there can be a lot of collaboration,” she added.

Beyond agriculture, Haskel pointed to other areas of potential cooperation, including cybersecurity, early childhood education, and women’s empowerment.

“There’s different programmes, for example, that we’ve done on early childcare and early learning, developing certain programmes in education and empowering women, and so there’s many, many fields,” she said.

“We said that we are going to continue and discuss a lot of these issues, and I really hope that we can form something serious about it.”

Israel’s ambassador to Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Roey Gilad, also weighed in, highlighting renewable energy as another avenue for partnership.

“One issue that the deputy minister and I discussed today was the possibility of solar energy. There is plenty of sun in this place; there is a cutting-edge technology in Israel concerning solar energy, and this might be another field we would like to develop,” Gilad remarked.

The Israeli delegation’s visit underlines the country’s commitment to deepening ties with Ghana, with an emphasis on innovation, development, and shared values.

Graham Potter appointed West Ham Manager

0

Graham Potter has been confirmed as the new manager of West Ham United, signing a contract to succeed Julen Lopetegui. The club has announced a press conference scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. at the London Stadium to formally unveil the former Chelsea boss.

Potter, who has been out of management for 20 months since his dismissal from Chelsea after just seven months in charge, is set to make his return with a challenging assignment. His first test could be an FA Cup third-round clash against Aston Villa on Friday.

A Well-Timed Move

Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol believes the timing of the appointment suits both parties. “Potter has been waiting for an opportunity like this, and West Ham needed stability after parting ways with Lopetegui,” he said.

Describing Potter as a “good fit” for the Hammers, Solhekol highlighted the manager’s emphasis on youth development and progressive football. However, he noted that Potter faces immediate pressure to deliver results, with five of West Ham’s next seven Premier League matches being London derbies, including a return to Stamford Bridge.

Pressure on Sporting Director Steidten

Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth noted that the focus will also be on West Ham’s sporting director, Tim Steidten. “The decision to appoint Lopetegui initially was unanimous among the board, but some fans were underwhelmed. Now that he’s gone, there’s bound to be more scrutiny on Steidten,” Sheth remarked.

West Ham invested over £100 million during the summer transfer window under Steidten’s guidance. With the January transfer window now open, the sporting director’s recruitment strategy will be closely monitored as Potter works to reshape the squad.

West Ham’s Upcoming Fixtures

Potter’s tenure begins with a demanding schedule, starting with an FA Cup tie and several crucial Premier League games:

  • January 10: Aston Villa (away), FA Cup
  • January 14: Fulham (home), Premier League
  • January 18: Crystal Palace (home), Premier League
  • January 26: Aston Villa (away), Premier League
  • February 3: Chelsea (away), Premier League

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, has extended genuine greetings to President John Dramani Mahama upon his swearing-in on January 7, 2025. In a social media post, Otchere-Darko described Mahama’s return to the president as a “fresh start” for Ghana. He stated that the people of the country had high hopes for the incoming administration and expressed his best wishes for the country’s future development.

He wrote: “Congratulations, Ghana! New head. New set. There is a new dawn. New hopes. Excellent expectations. I wish the new leadership and Ghana every success.”

Otchere-Darko underlined that the peaceful transition of power to Mahama strengthens Ghana’s global reputation as an example of democracy. He encouraged Ghanaians to be proud of their country, appreciating its beauty and the great qualities that others admire.

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, was officially sworn in at a ceremony in Accra’s Black Star Square. This milestone came after his spectacular victory in the December 2024 general elections, where he received a decisive mandate from the electorate.

A large number of international luminaries attended the inauguration ceremony, including 21 heads of state, ambassadors, and representatives from major worldwide organizations. Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President-elect, took the oath of office, making her the country’s first female Vice President.

Mahama’s return is historic, since he becomes Ghana’s first non-consecutive president under the Fourth Republic. He won by a landslide in the 2024 elections, with his closest challenger, Dr. Mamudu Bawumia, the outgoing Vice President and NPP flagbearer, collecting 41.61% of the vote.

Mahama previously served as president from July 24, 2012, until January 7, 2017, following the death of President John Atta Mills. He had also served as Vice President from 2009 till 2012.

Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill is ‘ridiculous’ and ‘evil’

0

Ghanaian musician and activist, Sister Deborah, has denounced the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024, widely referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, calling for its complete repeal.

According to her, the bill is ‘ridiculous’ and ‘evil’ and should be scrapped by the new government.

Speaking in an interview with Hitz FM, she described the proposed legislation as a tool to suppress freedoms and silence dissent.

“The entire bill has to be scrapped because we already have existing laws for rape, child marriage, and homosexuality… This bill is just here to silence certain people,” she said.

Sister Deborah further criticised the bill for its potential to criminalise discussions on LGBTQ+ issues, even implicating media outlets and social media platforms.

“So, imagine somebody on Twitter asks me a question, they are going to. If they mention those letters, they are going to jail. And the owner of Twitter is supposed to go to jail. That’s what the bill says. That’s why we keep saying that it’s a ridiculous bill. And it’s also a very evil bill,” she said.

She connected the bill to broader issues, suggesting it seeks to silence voices against corruption, environmental degradation, and abuse.

“Something Wanlov said to me the other day is that anybody who can fight for human rights is also someone who fights against galamsey, fights against deforestation, fight against or speak against corruption.

“So, they want to silence certain people or they want to silence people who can stand up to them,” she added.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, was introduced in August 2021 and approved by Parliament in February 2024.

The bill awaits the president’s signature to become law.

It proposes severe penalties for LGBTQ+ activities, including imprisonment for same-sex intercourse and promoting LGBTQ+ content.

The bill has strong support from religious and traditional leaders, but faces opposition from human rights activists who argue it violates fundamental rights.

Ama Dokua urges unity and reflection after NPP’s election 2024 defeat

Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei

Ghana’s former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, has called for unity, reflection, and collaboration following the country’s recent election, which resulted in a change of government.

In a social media post that has sparked national conversations, the former deputy minister acknowledged the wide range of emotions that have emerged in the aftermath of the December elections.

“From blame games and resentment to hindsight regrets over past decisions, actions, and inactions,” she wrote, adding that these sentiments offered an “invaluable opportunity for growth and understanding.”

Asiamah-Adjei proposed six guiding principles – termed the “Ps”- to navigate the challenges ahead and foster a prosperous and united New Patriotic Party (NPP) in opposition.

1.Past: Reflecting on history to learn from past mistakes and honour those who paved the way.

2.People: Prioritising the welfare of Ghanaians by focusing on health, education, and economic opportunities.

3.Personality: Championing integrity, empathy, and vision as the bedrock of leadership and citizenship.

4.Purpose: Striving for economic development paired with social justice.

5.Priority: Establishing clear priorities in key areas such as infrastructure, trade, technology, agriculture, and renewable energy.

6.Possibility: Understanding the population to harness opportunities that work best for them.

“These principles lay the groundwork for a hopeful future – a future marked by unity, generosity, and selflessness,” she wrote.

The former deputy minister, who doubled as MP for Akuapem North, reflected on the NPP’s transition to opposition, urging party members to embrace the opportunity for introspection.

“The fervent call for change has been heard loud and clear, and now it is time to collectively support the new government in steering Ghana towards a brighter future,” she added.

While the NPP is in opposition, Asiamah-Adjei emphasised the need to emerge stronger and more united, using this period to learn from past governance decisions.

She expressed optimism for Ghana’s future, urging collaboration over division. “May the journey ahead be one where we all benefit, where collaboration trumps division, and where the promise of a better Ghana becomes a tangible reality for every citizen,” she said.

Ending her statement, Asiamah-Adjei made it clear that her message was one of sober reflection and not an incitement to violence or disrespect. “This write-up is for sober reflection and not to promote violence or disrespect in any form,” she stressed.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of the Pentecost Church Ghana, has responded to criticisms regarding the perceived ‘loud silence’ of religious leaders during the tenure of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He explained that religious institutions, including the clergy, opted for a more direct approach when addressing national issues, choosing to communicate their positions directly to the president instead of publicly criticising the government.

January 8: President Mahama’s first day at work

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Jan 08, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama began his first day at work on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, operating from his private office at Cantonment in Accra.

He arrived at his office in the morning, accompanied by his Special Aide, Mrs Joyce Bawah Mogtari, and other senior officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Overlord of Gonjaland, accompanied by a delegation of chiefs from his Kingdom, participated in President Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, at the Independence Square in Accra.

President Mahama also held discussions with Mr Ousmane Diagana, the World Bank Vice President for West and Central Africa.

Mr Diagana was in Accra to attend President Mahama’s inauguration.

NPP failed to communicate challenges to Ghanaians – Vincent Assafuah

0

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election to its failure to effectively communicate the challenges it encountered during its tenure to the Ghanaian populace.

Speaking on Point Blank, a segment of Eyewitness News, Mr Assafuah admitted that governance challenges significantly impacted the party’s popularity.

He praised President Akufo-Addo as one of Ghana’s most outstanding leaders since independence but conceded that some decisions made by the President and his appointees did not resonate well with the public.

“We had issues with governance. Akufo-Addo is one of the best presidents we’ve ever had since independence. Of course, there are actions and inactions of people, especially appointees, that did not go down well on the people of Ghana.

“There may also be one or two actions of the president that maybe out of misunderstanding didn’t go down well. I am one of the people who believe that the NPP and its government failed to be able to communicate the challenges of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

Explaining further, Mr. Assafuah referred to campaign promises made by President John Mahama, including pledges to cancel taxes such as the E-Levy and Betting Tax within 120 days of assuming office.

He argued that such promises highlight the complexity of governance and the difficulty of fulfilling them without creating fiscal imbalances.

“John Mahama said that within the first 120 days, he is going to cancel the E-Levy, Betting Tax, etc. This was before he took over the reins of the government. He is now trying to rationalise the minds of the Ghanaian people, but it may not be easy to implement such promises.

“It means these taxes are necessary. However, the NPP failed to carry the people of Ghana along to understand the challenges we faced as a nation,” he explained.

MPs on Appointments Committee to vet Mahama’s ministerial nominees

0

The 9th Parliament of Ghana, sworn in on the dawn of Tuesday, January 7, 2025, has finalised the composition of its key committees, including the Appointments Committee.

This committee, critical for vetting President John Dramani Mahama‘s ministerial nominees, comprises members from both the Majority and Minority sides of the House.

Following a meeting by the Committee of Selection on January 8, 2025, the membership of the Appointments Committee was formalised in line with Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament.

The Committee’s composition reflects input from the leadership of both caucuses and adheres to the principle of representing the diversity of opinions in Parliament.

The Appointments Committee, chaired by Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, is responsible for vetting nominees for ministerial, ambassadorial, and other key positions.

Notable members include:

Hon. Bernard Ahiafor (Chairman)

Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (Vice Chairperson)

Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza

Hon. Mahama Ayariga

Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey

Hon. Alexander K. Afenyo-Markin (Ranking Member)

Hon. Patricia Appiagyei (Deputy Ranking Member)

The Committee has been tasked with ensuring a rigorous but fair vetting process for President Mahama’s nominees, especially given the pressing need for the new government to hit the ground running.

During deliberations, the Committee adhered to Standing Orders 216 and 217, ensuring balance and representation in the committee’s composition.

The Speaker of Parliament emphasised the importance of these appointments to foster unity and effective governance.

Ghanaians will be keenly observing the process, which will provide insight into the new administration’s approach to governance and accountability.

Below is the list of the Appointments Committee members:

Ablekuma North: I’ve won, I’ll fight till the end

Nana Akua Afriyie, the Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ablekuma North, has vowed to persist relentlessly in asserting her victory in the constituency’s parliamentary elections.

Speaking at the collation centre in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Afriyie expressed her unwavering commitment to ensuring that the truth prevails in the electoral process.

“We have 281 polling stations in Ablekuma North. It was left with 62 and by the grace of God truth will stand. In the first place, I appreciate the justice system that we should go and collate, and I am firm. I want to say on record that I will fight till the end because I know I won,” she declared.

Afriyie highlighted her meticulous preparation, stating, “I have all my 281 pink sheets scanned. I did it immediately before the gentleman who came and tore everything from the EC.”

“…Gradually we are left with three polling stations. By the grace of God, I am leading comfortably and that is the fear.”

Meanwhile, the Returning Officer for the Ablekuma North Constituency, Vincent Obeng, has announced his decision to discontinue the collation of results in the area.

He informed the Electoral Commission (EC) to find a replacement, citing frustrations encountered during the collation process on January 8, 2025.

Obeng revealed that, out of seven polling stations, results from four had already been collated, leaving just three remaining.

“A great inaugural speech must lay out the national vision in clear terms, and chart a path of coherence for our national economic recovery.”

On Tuesday, the 7th of January,2025, government would change hands from the NPP to the NDC, and from Akufo-Addo to John Dramani Mahama.

This would be the 9th time under this Constitution that someone is being sworn in as president, even though we have had five occupants, all of them except the late president Mills doing two terms.

If the first coming was tough, Mahama’s second coming would be tougher, considering the almost unsurmountable economic malaise we find ourselves in.

Unfortunately, we don’t remember any of our five presidents, particularly for their great inaugural speeches. While the inaugural speech in itself may not be a magic wand for a great performance by any means, it definitely sets the tone for what fate awaits the nation in the next four years.

A great inaugural speech must lay out the national vision in clear terms, and chart a path of coherence for our national economic recovery.

More importantly, it must be well constructed and articulated to challenge and inspire citizens into making sacrifices for the nation, while uniting the country and restoring hope in the national reconstruction effort.

The inaugural speech is an international barometer for measuring the country’s readiness to chart the path of progress and development and to attract international investment and collaboration in key sectors of the economy.

Would John Mahama be able to ride on the sea of goodwill that handed the NPP its worst defeat at the polls to build hope and confidence in the Ghanaian dream once more?

The Ghanaian dream, unfortunately, is nothing extraordinary. It is simply being able to create jobs for our youth so they can put food on the table. This dream has remained elusive for many Ghanaians throughout the life of the Fourth Republic.

Why our leaders cannot create jobs for the youth of this country remains a mystery. What’s the use of education and infrastructural development if they cannot coagulate into jobs?

Each year, a new batch of unemployed youth worsens the unemployment situation, creating a sea of frustrated, demented, hopeless youth incapable of fulfilling their aspirations in this ransacked country.

Partisanship, corruption, and shortsightedness have remained the bane of democracy as practised in Africa. The principle of “us and against them” and looting the treasury in turns by ruling governments have turned our harpless youth into strangers in foreign lands, or be resigned to failure if they must remain in the motherland.

John Mahama’s work is cut out for him rather nicely. Whether he would taste like a new wine in a new bottle, or a new wine in an old wineskin (just another John)with the same uninspiring, lethargic, repetitive motions of governance that we have become so accustomed to, we wait to see.

Can John Mahama rein his ministers in? Can he prioritize the national interest over parochial partisanship? Can he dust the flames of greed from his party and lay a new foundation for a prosperous Ghana?

Then let his inaugural speech set the tone!

Ablekuma North: We’ll bring back Returning Officer to complete collation

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to reinstate the Returning Officer for Ablekuma North, Vincent Obeng, to complete the collation of parliamentary results for the constituency.

This decision comes after Mr Obeng declared his intention to step down from the collation process, citing frustrations during the exercise on January 8, 2025. He also asked the EC to appoint a replacement to continue the process.

According to Mr Obeng, the collation of results for Ablekuma North was incomplete, with only three polling stations remaining out of a total of seven. He confirmed that results from four polling stations had already been successfully collated.

Addressing the situation at the collation centre in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, acknowledged Mr Obeng’s frustrations but clarified that the declaration was not final.

“I think it is out of frustration that he is saying what he said, and I understand him, but I don’t think that it is the end of the road, we will get him back.

“I want to put on record that the commission has no interest at all in who becomes the MP but we should be very careful with the precedent we set. It is the voter who should be their leaders be it presidential or parliamentary,” he stated.

Controversy Erupts as Alana Hadid Accuses Israel of Racism Against Ethiopian Jews

0

According to a report published by the Jerusalem Post, social media influencer Alana Hadid has accused Israel of forcibly sterilizing Ethiopian Jewish women who immigrated to the country.

Hadid, the sister of models Bella and Gigi Hadid, shared these claims with her nearly 700,000 Instagram followers, sparking widespread reactions online.

In her post, Hadid alleged that Ethiopian Jews faced systemic racism, claiming that women migrants were given contraceptive injections, such as Depo-Provera, without their full knowledge or consent.

She argued that this practice was part of a broader attempt to control a population deemed undesirable, contradicting Israel’s image as a safe haven for Jews.

Hadid cited earlier reports from Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, which initially alleged that Ethiopian women were coerced into taking the injections, with some being told their immigration was conditional on receiving the contraceptive.

However, Haaretz later issued corrections to its 2013 report, clarifying that the claims of a forced sterilization policy were unproven.

A state comptroller investigation conducted over three years found no evidence to support the allegations.

Ethiopian Jews’ immigration to Israel, primarily through operations like Moses and Solomon in the 1980s and 1990s, was fraught with challenges.

Many endured arduous journeys, hunger, and violence to reach safety. Despite this, their integration into Israeli society has been marred by debates about discrimination and inclusion.

The Joint Distribution Committee, involved in aiding Ethiopian Jews’ transit, denied allegations of coercion, stating that contraceptive use in Ethiopia was voluntary and culturally common.

Hadid’s statements have reignited discussions about racism and historical injustices, even as Israeli officials insist that their actions were in good faith.

The issue remains sensitive, reflecting broader debates about ethnicity, immigration, and social inclusion in Israel.

Nsiah Boakye Andrews, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secretary for the Ashanti Region’s Offinso South Constituency, is recuperating from wounds he received in an assault that was allegedly planned by Joe Sala, the constituency chairman, and several other people.

Mr. Boakye Andrews was allegedly beaten at the NPP Constituency office on Tuesday morning on account of his use of a party-branded vehicle.

The issue, according to sources, revolved around a brand-new pickup truck that the party’s national executives donated during the general elections in 2024.

According to reports, Mr. Boakye Andrews allegedly refused to comply with the party leadership’s demand that the vehicle be returned after the elections.

A number of people, including the Chairman, locked the party office and confronted the Secretary as tensions increased.

Due to the intense nature of the altercation, Mr. Boakye Andrews sustained serious injuries.

Currently, he is being treated at a nearby hospital.

Within the party, the episode has sparked worries and demands for a comprehensive investigation to guarantee accountability and stop future conflicts.

Free SHS Hits Roadblock Over Food Shortages

0

The ambitious Free Senior High School (SHS) program, launched in 2017, has been hailed as a game-changer in increasing access to education.

However, the program is currently facing significant challenges, including severe food shortages and delayed government payments.

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has sounded the alarm, urging parents to provide additional food for their children to mitigate the impact of these shortages.

The Free SHS program has been plagued by financial constraints, with the government struggling to pay food suppliers on time.

This has resulted in many schools facing severe food shortages, with some institutions unable to provide adequate meals for their students.

Primus Baro, the National Secretary of CHASS, revealed that the situation is particularly dire in regions such as the Upper West, Upper East, and Northern, where basic necessities like cooking oil are unavailable.

Despite earlier calls by CHASS to postpone school reopening due to these financial constraints, schools resumed operations on January 3.

However, the situation remains dire, with many institutions struggling to cope with the food shortages.

To make matters worse, the government’s delay in paying food suppliers has resulted in a buildup of debt, further exacerbating the crisis.

*A Call to Action: Parents Urged to Supplement Food Supplies*

In light of these challenges, CHASS has advised parents to provide their children with additional food items like gari, shito, and sugar to supplement the school’s provisions.

While this is not an ideal situation, it is a temporary measure to ensure students receive adequate nutrition.

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has also suggested that parents be allowed to contribute to the feeding program to help alleviate the financial burden on the government.

The Free SHS program has been a flagship initiative of the Ghanaian government, aiming to provide equitable access to education for all.

However, the current challenges facing the program threaten to undermine its success.

As the government struggles to find a solution to the financial woes plaguing the program, parents, schools, and stakeholders must come together to ensure that students receive the education they deserve.

*Previous Background History*

The Free SHS program was launched in 2017 as part of the government’s efforts to increase access to education.

The program has been hailed as a success, with enrollment numbers increasing significantly since its inception.

However, the program has faced numerous challenges, including infrastructure limitations, inadequate resources, and concerns about the quality of education.

Maintain E-Levy to support Women’s Development Bank, SMEs – GUTA tells Mahama

0

The President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr Joseph Obeng, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his decision to abolish the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy).

“I would suggest that, if possible, the government should not abolish the E-Levy,” he said.

He explained that the proceeds from the tax should be used to support Ghanaian traders, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) including the President’s proposed Women’s Development Bank.

“We can use the proceeds from the E-Levy to provide access to finance for SMEs and for the women that the President is so concerned about.”

Before winning the 2024 election, President Mahama promised to abolish the E-Levy, which was introduced by the Akufo-Addo government. In his campaign to empower SMEs, he also promised to establish a Women’s Development Bank—a financial institution that would offer loans to women at low interest rates.

Dr Obeng argued that the President would need money to establish the bank and suggested that the E-Levy could serve as a potential source of revenue to support this initiative and help various SMEs.

“This is my view, and I am expressing it because if we want to raise funds to support the informal sector, SMEs, and women, we must also think about how to generate this money.”

He added, “I have already said that we should rationalise taxes, and if there is one tax I would recommend maintaining, it should be the E-Levy. It is not only businesses that pay this tax—it is paid by all of us. Moreover, it is an existing tax that is already in place and is ongoing.”

Dr Obeng was speaking on JoyNews’ Newsdesk on Wednesday, January 8.

The E-Levy, introduced by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, was designed to broaden the country’s tax base and generate revenue for national development.

However, the tax has faced significant criticism from many Ghanaians. In response to the backlash, the government reduced the initial 1.5% charge to 1%.

Meanwhile, the Special Aide to the new President, Joyce Bawah, reassured the public earlier on JoyNews’ AM Show that the new government would abolish the E-Levy, as well as the COVID-19 levy.

NPP won’t allow Bawumia stand for president again with Nana Addo gone

0

Actor Kwaku Manu believes this is the end of Bawumia's leadership of the NPP Actor Kwaku Manu believes this is the end of Bawumia’s leadership of the NPP

Renowned Ghanaian actor and New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathiser, Kwaku Manu, has expressed his concerns about the party’s treatment of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In an interview sighted by GhanaWeb Entertainment, Manu claimed that the NPP would not allow Dr. Bawumia to stand for president again, suggesting that Nana Addo had used his power to bring Bawumia into prominence.

According to him, now that Nana Addo is no longer in power, the party will use its resources to assert control.

“As Nana Addo has left the NPP party, the party won’t allow Dr. Bawumia to stand for the president again. They feel like because Nana Addo is the president, he used his power to bring in Dr. Bawumia, so now that he is no longer in power, they would use their money and power to show him that the party was for them.

“Now, even the NPP members, when they meet Nana Addo and he misbehaves, they will tell him, ‘When you’re on the seat that’s when you have power, so since you’re no longer on the seat, nobody is scared of you,’” he said.

Reflecting on his past support for the NPP, Manu criticised Nana Addo’s handling of certain issues with chiefs and kings, implying that it was not appropriate.

“Sometimes, I can’t just believe that Nana Addo is not our president anymore. I remember campaigning for the NPP before, and the influence the party had in the country was strong. But the way Nana Addo handled certain things with the chiefs and kings wasn’t right,” he added.

Meanwhile, John Dramani Mahama was officially sworn in as Ghana’s president on January 7, 2025, at a ceremony held at the Black Star Square in Accra.

This event marked his return to the presidency, making him the first former leader of Ghana to be re-elected to the highest office of the land.

The inauguration was attended by over 30 heads of state and prime ministers, highlighting its significance on the global stage.

In his inaugural speech, Mahama emphasised themes of democracy, hope, and inclusivity, pledging to build a resilient healthcare system and foster gender equality.

Man Utd trying unique arrangement to seal Nuno Mendes transfer, Ruben Amorim’s priority clear

0

Manchester United are in a weird position where they need, and probably want to do a lot of business in January but their hands are tied.

The Glazers have ensured that Man Utd have to operate in the market with one hand tied behind their backs for a while and Ineos are making some tough decisions to get around that handicap.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is sacrificing the morale to get the financial bottom line on track and in the transfer market, they are having to be creative.

Nuno Mendes, the flying full-back from PSG who United have been linked to, is a priority transfer target but United are trying to form a unique arrangement to get the deal done.

Man Utd trying for Nuno Mendes transfer

Nuno Mendes is a huge opportunity for Ruben Amorim to reunite with a player who broke through under him, plays at a position of need at Old Trafford, and will be financially palatable due to his contract situation.

His contract at PSG expires in 2026 and he has shown no signs of signing a new deal so far, leaving the door open for United to pounce.

There have been reports, however, that Mendes will be too expensive in January, prompting United to look toward Patrick Dorgu.

Still, Amorim’s priority is clear and the board looks determined to land his first-choice target, even if it means they have to be creative.

FootMercato reports that United are trying to convince PSG to not sell Mendes in January when they are not in a position to secure a deal for him.

Instead, PSG are being urged to sell Mendes in the summer when United would hopefully be in a better position to strike. In the meantime, PSG can try and negotiate with Mendes over a new contract as well.

United are banking on Mendes’ want to reunite with Amorim which will see him reject contract offers and are relying on PSG agreeing to it since it gives them clarity for six months and time to negotiate a contract if they can.

At the same time, effectively earning a first option on Mendes will strengthen United’s negotiating position since they’ll attack the summer market with a lot more clarity.

Ineos’ financial prowess about to be tested

United’s revolving credit facility paid for their summer business but that was pretty much a case of kicking the can down the road and dealing with it later.

That later has arrived now, which is causing issues at the club at a time when the Man Utd squad needs the most reinforcements.

Ineos have taken over a financial mess but the moves they’ve made, unpopular ones more often than not, have ensured the spotlight is firmly on them.

The Glazers will probably be laughing all the way to the bank as they take a backseat to everything and allow Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to bear the brunt of criticism.

Their financial prowess and trickery will be severely tested this January and in the summer as the need to offload low-performing, high-costing contracts arises at the same time as potential incoming players.

It seems like they know what they are getting into and are trying to get ahead of the curve by striking unique agreements with clubs to prep for an active summer window.

The power of United’s brand along with Ineos’ financial prowess is about to be severely tested.

Address us as Minority, not ‘Micro-Minority’ – Afenyo-Markin to Bagbin

0

The Minority Members of Parliament have strongly objected to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s description of their caucus as a “micro-minority.”

Leading the protest, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed the caucus’s dissatisfaction during a parliamentary session, stating that the label was inappropriate and uncalled for.

The incident occurred during the session on Wednesday, January 8, when Speaker Bagbin referred to the Minority caucus using the contentious term, sparking discontent among its members.

Responding to the Speaker’s description, Afenyo-Markin noted “Mr Speaker, we do not have any micro minority. Mr Speaker, the minority caucus hereby protests the description given to us by Mr Speaker.”

He further highlighted the role of the minority caucus in supporting Bagbin’s election as Speaker, despite opposition from the majority.

“Mr Speaker, we seconded the motion for your election. When the so-called majority was even conspiring against you, we protested. We stopped them from that conspiracy. Mr Speaker, it was us, the minority of conscience,” he continued.

Afenyo-Markin insisted that the term “micro minority” was unacceptable and urged the Speaker to address them as “minority semplicità.”

I’ve won, I’ll fight till the end – Akua Afriyie

0

World Bank pledges support to revitalize Ghana’s cocoa sector

0

The World Bank has acknowledged the significant challenges confronting Ghana’s cocoa sector and has pledged to offer recommendations to help revitalize the industry.

On January 8, 2025, during a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama, Ousmane Diagana, Vice President for West and Central Africa at the World Bank, emphasized the untapped potential within Ghana’s agricultural sector, with a particular focus on cocoa.

“On cocoa, Ghana is one of those countries where we have prepared what we call country-climate under-development. And we have indeed identified the potential that exists in the agricultural sector. Particularly is cocoa and at the same time what are the challenges the sector has faced?

“We have Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire together, even though there are similarities. We have some recommendations that the team can discuss with you at some point. In that regard, and see how we can use our existing programme because we have some dedicated programmes that exist already in Ghana in order to contribute to addressing those challenges that have been mentioned.

Ghana’s cocoa sub-sector contracted by 26% in the third quarter of 2024, marking its fifth consecutive decline and highlighting ongoing struggles in one of the nation’s most vital export industries.

This significant drop contrasts sharply with the broader economy, which grew by 7.2% during the same period. Excluding oil, Ghana’s economy expanded in current terms to Ghȼ254 billion, compared to Ghȼ194 billion in the third quarter of 2023.

The cocoa sector’s challenges, which began in the third quarter of 2023, have worsened throughout 2024. The first quarter recorded the steepest contraction of 20.2%, followed by back-to-back 26% declines in the second and third quarters, signalling a deepening crisis.

This prolonged downturn threatens the stability of Ghana’s cocoa sector, a critical driver of rural livelihoods and a major source of foreign exchange earnings.

Top Looks from the Presidential Inauguration… The Hits and the Misses!

0

Tuesday 7th January 2025 will go down into the annals history as one of the significant days in Ghana’s history or “her story”

This is the day Ghana inducted a female to the highest office of a Vice President. After Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang took her oath of office. I wrote on my WhatsApp status; “I saw this in my lifetime” I was elated about this.

I’m still counting to the day we shall have a woman President. Which I’m optimistic will be soon.

It was a beautiful and colorful ceremony, the Black Stars Square saw a captivating transformation. Following the conversation on Facebook and other platforms the credit for the transformation and stellar production was going to one gentleman with the name Stan Dogbe. Mr. Dogbe, you and your team have done a great job.

If you are an ardent follower of my blog, you know my forte is in fashion. So my piece will focus on the fashion and looks i saw at the event.

My opinion is going to be factual devoid of preferences and straight to the point.

Those who put in the work will get their ccolades and those who decided to make a mess will get it straight and firm.

So let’s dive in;

The former Second Lady, Samira Bawumia. This lady is a trend setter and fashionista par excellence. I was expecting a final fashion showdown from her at the inauguration but Auntie didn’t. I didn’t like her outfit. It was so off brand for her.
Hon Zita Benson looking flamboyant in her kente. I love the choice of colour but not the illusion net around her neck area. The designer should have used a colour that blends well with her skin tone. Regardless she looked fab.

We’ll support Ghana’s development initiatives

0

The World Bank has reiterated its commitment to fostering economic growth in African nations, with a special focus on financing key development initiatives in Ghana.

Ousmane Diagana, Vice President for West and Central Africa at the World Bank affirmed the institution’s dedication to supporting African countries in overcoming the challenges of sustainable economic growth.

He made these remarks during a high-level delegation visit to President John Mahama’s office in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. The discussions centred on strategies to strengthen partnerships and enhance development efforts across the region.

“In the last couple of months since the arrival of the new president Ajay Banga, there is a concept that we call the better and bigger World Bank. But we are now focusing on the better bank before actually getting to the bigger bank.

“So with the better bank, obviously the elements of ownership for government, client, partnership will be the order complementing the financial assistance that we are providing with the knowledge aspect because as a global institution, obviously we work with all of the countries and this has allowed us to gain a lot of experience.

“As we mentioned on the formality aspect, how we can bring resources into the economy, making sure that those are not part of financing the economy…In particular in West African countries, this challenge that Ghana is facing in that area is the same that we see in Senegal, Kenya, etc. So we are happy to bring our department working in the area into the conversation with Ghana and see how we can really widen the resource base, making sure that the domestic organisation part of financing the economy also increases.

“On cocoa, Ghana is one of those countries where we have prepared what we call the country climate and development and we had indeed identified the potential that exists in the agricultural sector, in particular, the whole of cocoa but at the same time the challenges the sector has faced.

Everyone in the NPP gov’t became a sycophant—Kwadwo Mpiani

0

Former Chief of Staff under the John Agyekum Kufour administration, Kwadwo Mpiani, has indicated that everyone in the outgone New Patriotic Party government became a sycophant.

He says they looked on even when things were going bad but could not tell truth to power.

Kwadwo Mpiani blames this on the fact that the political party gave power to just one person and since everyone wanted to be in his good books, they could not say it to his face when things were wrong.

Look When President Mahama Met the Designer of His Fabric for the First Time in His Shop

0

When President John Mahama met the designer Bondaana at his shop for the first time, it marked the beginning of a significant and culturally meaningful collaboration. The designer, Bondaana, became widely known for creating the unique attire worn by Mahama during his inauguration. This outfit—a white Agbaza paired with Kente accents—symbolized Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and was a powerful statement on national identity. The fabric and design choice were not only visually striking but also reflected Mahama’s commitment to upholding the country’s traditions while embracing a sense of unity.

The inauguration outfit was meticulously crafted to convey a sense of pride in Ghanaian craftsmanship. The Agbaza, a traditional style of dress, was designed with intricate patterns, while the vibrant Kente accents added an element of modernity, creating a blend of the past and the present. It wasn’t merely a fashion choice; it was a statement of Mahama’s deep respect for the cultural values that define Ghana as a nation. This attire became an instant symbol of national pride and unity, especially during a time when the country was facing significant economic challenges.

As Mahama prepared to begin his third term in office, his attire served as a reminder of the importance of preserving local traditions amidst contemporary issues. The collaboration between Mahama and Bondaana was more than just about fashion; it was about representing the people of Ghana on a global stage with dignity and authenticity. The choice to wear locally sourced fabrics instead of foreign-made ones underscored the president’s commitment to supporting Ghanaian artisans and designers, which helped shine a light on local craftsmanship.

The warm reception of the outfit by the public and the media reflected Mahama’s awareness of the significance of wearing culturally representative attire during such a historic moment. The design, which fused both traditional and modern elements, highlighted the evolving nature of Ghanaian culture and its ability to maintain its roots while embracing progress.

The meeting between President Mahama and Bondaana at the designer’s shop not only signified the start of a collaboration that would impact the country’s fashion scene but also highlighted how fashion and culture could come together to form a powerful statement of identity. As Mahama’s inauguration attire was praised across the nation, it was clear that Bondaana’s design had achieved its goal of celebrating Ghana’s rich heritage in a fresh and exciting way. The partnership was one of many that showcased the vital role of local craftsmanship in representing the heart of a nation.

What’s the Same? What’s Different? Who Lived in Both Homes?

0

Elvis Presley‘s Graceland home is one of the most iconic of any entertainer. Millions of visitors enter its musical gates every year to celebrate the life and career of the King of Rock and Roll. However, there’s another stately home, Neverland, that housed another legendary entertainer, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. What are the same elements between these homes? What are the key differences? Most of all, who lived in both places?

Elvis Presley’s Graceland: The facts

Elvis Presley purchased Graceland on March 19, 1957 for $102,500. The mansion is located in Memphis, Tennessee.

Graceland is a 17,552-square-foot home with 23 rooms, in total, spread out over 13.8 acres. Elvis spent over 20 years of his life enjoying the stately home, named in honor of Grace Toof, a relative of the original owners.

After Elvis’ death, Graceland remained a private residence until 1982, when it was opened to the public as a museum. It remains the second most visited home in the world, second to The White House.

Graceland was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1991. In 2006, Graceland’s significance was further acknowledged when it was designated as a National Historic Landmark, a more exclusive recognition given to properties of exceptional historical importance in American culture.

Elvis died in the mansion on Aug. 16, 1977. His funeral took place in the home and he is buried in its Meditation Garden.

Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch served at his home and personal amusement park

Neverland Ranch was purchased by Michael Jackson in 1988. It is located in Los Olivos, California, about 125 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The property is approximately 2,700 acres and cost the entertainer $19.5M. It is comprised of 18 rooms in total for the 13,500 sq. ft. home.

The home is named Neverland after the fantasy island in JM Barrie’s story of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. The property surrounding the home includes an amusement park, a petting zoo, and multiple trains and railroads that run through the property.

The ranch was a retreat where Jackson entertained children, friends, and family, often hosting charity events for underprivileged kids. However, it was also the place where Jackson allegedly molested several young boys.

Due to mounting debts, Jackson relinquished control of the property in 2008. However, Neverland remained owned by Jackson’s estate and Colony Capital. Forbes reported that in Dec. 2020, billionaire Ron Burkle, a friend of the late pop star, purchased the property for $22M. It has since been renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch.

Jackson died tragically in 2009 from a combination of anesthetic propofol and lorazepam. He died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

Who lived in both homes?

Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, lived at both Graceland and Neverland. She considered Graceland her primary residence from 1969 through 1977 when Elvis died. Lisa Marie visited Graceland after Elvis‘ death to visit family but eventually made California her home.

Lisa Marie continued to visit Graceland with her children Riley, Benjamin, Harper, and Finley throughout her life. She spent holidays at the home, visiting when it was not open for tours.

However, upon her marriage to Michael Jackson in May 1994, Lisa Marie also had the opportunity to reside in Neverland with Riley and Ben. It was not the couple’s primary residence, but they did spend time at the home.

Their marriage ended two years later, in 1996. Lisa Marie opened up on her blog, reprinted by Oprah.com, about her and Michael’s union.

Lisa wrote, “The hardest decision I have ever had to make, which was to walk away and let his fate have him, even though I desperately loved him and tried to stop or reverse it somehow. He was an amazing person and I am lucky to have gotten as close to him as I did and to have had the many experiences and years that we had together.”

Lisa Marie first met Michael in 1974 when she was six years old and attended his concert at the Sahara Tahoe. That was the first time her father, Elvis Presley, met him as well.

I’m done collating Ablekuma North results, find a new person – Returning Officer quits

0

The Returning Officer for the Ablekuma North Constituency, Vincent Obeng, has announced his decision to discontinue the collation of results in the area.

He informed the Electoral Commission (EC) to find a replacement, citing frustrations encountered during the collation process on January 8, 2025.

Obeng revealed that, out of seven polling stations, results from four had already been collated, leaving just three remaining.

Speaking to Channel One News’ Hanson Agyemang, Obeng explained, “I hope you have all seen what is going on. Yesterday January 7, we were left with 7 polling stations to go. We came today [January 8], and we have been able to do four out of the seven.

“So we’re left with three more. We brought our presiding officers here, two came and they couldn’t authenticate the statement of the poll and the declaration form. One said she couldn’t come, so that is the three now.

“It’s so unfortunate for me to make this statement that I’m done with Ablekuma North. They should find a new Returning Officer to continue their work for them.”

In his response, the Director of Training, EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe expressed regret over the comment by the Returning Officer.

Chaos erupted at the Greater Accra Regional Office during the resumption of the collation of results for Ablekuma North by the Electoral Commission (EC), sparking heightened tensions.

The incident stemmed from accusations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the EC was collaborating with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to manipulate election results in the constituency.

The NDC’s Constituency Organiser, Musa Kalamu, alleged that the EC was aiding the NPP in doctoring figures from pink sheets of outstanding polling stations.

The situation occurred after the EC resumed the collation of the results after it temporarily suspended the collation process for the Ablekuma North constituency due to unresolved issues with results from seven outstanding polling stations, on January 6.

This decision comes as the EC sought to verify and authenticate the results from these polling stations before proceeding with the final collation.

Out of the 20 outstanding polling stations before the collation exercise on Monday, January 6, presiding officers have successfully authenticated 13 of the pink sheets submitted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mahama will scrap COVID-19 levy, E-levy – Bawah Mogtari

0

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to abolishing the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) and the COVID-19 levy.

This pledge, a key feature of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, aims to provide relief to Ghanaians burdened by these levies.

Speaking on the matter, Madam Bawah Mogtari assured the public that the government remains resolute in its determination to deliver on this promise, emphasizing its dedication to easing the financial pressures on citizens.

“The E-levy has been a significant concern for many citizens. In a country where several banks have collapsed, some intentionally, mobile money services have become the main avenue for financial transactions. It is critical to ensure that this platform remains accessible and affordable for all. These levies will be scrapped,” Joyce Bawah made these remarks during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show.

She expressed disapproval of the 1.5% rate of the levy, comparing it to other nations where taxes are limited to 0.5%.

In her view, the increased rate has rendered the levy burdensome for the average Ghanaian, emphasizing its wider consequences, particularly its effects on international development.

“For those who have no other options but to transact business using mobile money, this levy is not just inconvenient but stifling.

“Many development partners used to distribute resources through mobile money platforms. However, the introduction of the E-levy has disrupted these processes, adding unnecessary strain to an already fragile system.”

Additionally, Joyce Bawah questioned the continued collection of COVID-19 by the Akufo-Addo administration years after the pandemic had subsided.

“If we still have these levies in place and yet have not completed crucial projects like Agenda 111, we need to ask ourselves whether these levies serve their intended purpose..”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s vocal Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, is only one of many outstanding women who stand behind every powerful male. More than just a helpful spouse, his wife, Irene Amankwaa Karikari, is a driven and passionate individual leaving her mark on Ghanaian politics.

Political arenas are nothing new to Irene. She was an outspoken supporter of women’s empowerment and social development while serving as the NDC’s Deputy Women’s Organiser candidate in the Sunyani West constituency. Her dedication to promoting change within and outside of her community is demonstrated by her political activism. Despite her public appearances, Irene has drawn praise for her poise and tenacity for striking a delicate balance between power and solitude.

A Story of Purpose-Based Love

Before their recent marriage ceremony, which attracted public attention, the pair maintained a somewhat secret relationship. Close family and friends attended the small gathering in Greater Accra, demonstrating their love of closeness and lasting relationships. Their romantic tale was made more charming by the modest celebration, which reaffirmed their emphasis on purpose over extravagance.

A Power Couple That Is Flexible

Sammy Gyamfi has established a solid reputation for his tenacious support of the NDC, incisive political observations, and fierce speech. His capacity to enthrall people has cemented his rise to prominence in Ghanaian politics. Beneath his public image, however, is a spouse who not only matches his vision but also his passion and determination.

Sammy and Irene’s political activity enhances one another, creating a relationship based on advocacy and a common goal. In Ghana, power couples are increasingly using their positions to advocate for social and political reforms, as evidenced by their union. As Irene continues to shatter stereotypes and spur change, her role demonstrates the growing power of women in Ghanaian politics.

An Energizing Collaboration

Love, ambition, and dedication are embodied by Sammy Gyamfi and Irene Amankwaa Karikari together. Their tale is more than just a love story; it is an example of how collaboration may lead to a brighter future. Together, their platforms and efforts encourage the next generation to see the transformational power of solidarity and common objectives.

Mahama calls for urgent action on looming power crisis

0

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed shock over the severity of the looming power crisis as he assumes office.

This follows concerns raised by John Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, regarding a severe fuel shortage threatening to plunge the country into an energy crisis, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”

Speaking after President Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2024, Jinapor revealed that Ghana’s fuel reserves are critically low, with only five hours of supply remaining.

Jinapor also criticised the outgoing administration for failing to secure adequate fuel supplies, leaving the incoming government in a precarious position.

During a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank, President Mahama emphasized the urgency of resolving the escalating crisis, stating that immediate steps are required to avert widespread power outages.

“The transition has taken place, it’s been smooth and cordial. But there are few surprises that have come up in respect of the energy sector, and some aspects of government decisions over the seven years. But Ghana has the human resources to deal with the situation and turn things around as quickly as possible,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) urged President Mahama to act swiftly to avert the possibility of a dumsor.

I support NDC for their results, not for money – Bullgod

Entertainment pundit, Bullgod Entertainment pundit, Bullgod

On a lively episode of U Cook on UTV hosted by gospel singer Empress Gifty, outspoken entertainment pundit and artiste manager Bulldog, born Lawrence Asiamah Hanson, did not mince words about his political allegiance.

In the interview monitored by MyNewsGH, Bulldog openly declared his unwavering support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while offering a scathing critique of the previous administration under Nana Akufo-Addo, describing it as “one of the most ineffective in history.”

When Empress Gifty probed into his consistent criticism of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the show, Bulldog explained his position with characteristic candour.

“It’s not about being bitter or having a personal vendetta,” he began.

“I support the NDC because, under Mahama’s leadership, we saw tangible results—solid infrastructure, good policies, and genuine progress.”

In defending his stance, Bulldog brought up the contentious debate around the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which the NPP often touts as a cornerstone of its legacy.

“Let’s set the record straight,” he asserted. “The Free SHS initiative didn’t originate with the NPP. Mahama laid the groundwork before leaving office. They only implemented it, but the credit goes to the NDC.”

Bulldog’s pointed remarks didn’t stop there. Responding to Empress Gifty’s question about whether he was financially motivated to align with the NDC, he dismissed the idea with a laugh.

“I don’t need anyone to pay me to speak the truth,” he said. “I support the NDC because they deliver results, not because of money.”

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised objection with the description of his caucus as “micro” by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, during proceedings on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

While reacting to an MP’s objection to the Majority Leader’s use of the title “Osahen” on parliamentary records, the Speaker, in a jest, stated that it remains part of his duty to protect “the leader of the micro minority.”

The comment by the Speaker attracted a sharp objection by the NPP Caucus which had its members rising to their feet in protest.

Rising to his feet, the Majority Leader emphasised the caucus’s objection to the description.

The Speaker, in response, agreed to the Minority’s objection, noting it as justified and stated that he will forthwith not use the term on the caucus again.

The NDC gained an overwhelming majority of seats in the 2024 parliamentary election, securing 183 seats as against the 88 currently held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Independent members hold four other seats, while a single seat, the Ablekuma North seat, remains outstanding due to an ongoing dispute between the two leading political parties.

Arteta should leave if he doesn’t win the league next season

0

Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi has suggested that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should step down if he fails to win the Premier League next season.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel Obi ruled out Arsenal’s chances of clinching the title this season despite their second-place position, trailing Liverpool by six points. He believes Arteta’s six-year tenure by next season should culminate in a league title or result in his departure from the club.

“If Mikel Arteta doesn’t win the league next season, I think he should leave the football club,” Mikel remarked.

He highlighted the increasing competition from top Premier League teams, predicting that Arsenal’s path to the title would be even more challenging in the coming season.

“Manchester City will come back stronger, we [Chelsea] will be stronger, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Newcastle are all improving. It’s going to be tough for Arsenal,” he explained.

Mikel Obi’s comments follow Arsenal’s recent 0-2 defeat to Newcastle United in the semi-finals of the English Football League (EFL) Cup.

The EFL Cup is no longer an option, therefore, Arsenal will bet their hopes on the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup for potential silverware this season.

Arteta, who has been praised for rebuilding the Gunners into title contenders, now faces heightened expectations as fans demand the ultimate prize— the Premier League title.

Dean of MMDCEs reacts to Mahama’s revocation of appointments

0

Dean for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Richmond Agyabeng Amponsah, has welcomed President John Mahama’s decision to revoke their appointments.

In an interview on Adom FM’s , Mr. Amponsah acknowledged that the announcement was sudden.

However, he stated that they anticipated this outcome once there was a change of government following the December 7 election.

“We were expecting this, but it is not surprising. Whether it came late or not, nothing would have changed. Bawumia conceded defeat, and we all prepared ourselves, but we didn’t expect it to come today,” he stated.

President John Mahama, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, revoked the appointments of all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

This was outlined in a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, and addressed to the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development.

Following the revocation, the Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs have been directed to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.
