How Ghana can lead Africa in sports excellence

0

I firmly believe that God endows nations and ethnicities with unique gifts. The Jews excel in business; Indians have an innate proficiency in commerce; the Japanese shine in mathematics; and Europeans have led engineering innovations through the second and third industrial revolutions.

Black Africans, on the other hand, possess a natural gift for sports. From athletics to football, boxing, basketball, and even newly embraced sports like tennis and gymnastics, the prowess of Black athletes is undeniable. Icons such as Jesse Owens, Mohamed Ali, Micheal Jordan, Serena and Venus Williams have broken barriers and proven that Black athletes can dominate on any stage. This innate ability is a God-given treasure that Ghana must harness.

Since the 1970s and 1980s, Ghana’s progress in sports has steadily declined due to a lack of vision, planning, and investment. However, the time has come for us to address this issue holistically, rebuild our socio-sporting framework, and set a bold vision for the future.

Take the UK as an example. By the early 2000s, Britain realized that in order to harness its vast sporting potential, it needed a strategic, focused effort. Despite having one of the world’s best football leagues, the national team had failed to perform consistently on the global stage.

In athletics, the strides of stars like Sebastian Coe, Steve Cram, Linford Christie, and Tessa Sanderson during the 1980s were not enough to sustain their dominance. Recognizing these challenges, the UK established St. George’s Park as a hub of sports excellence.

This facility brought together top sports scientists, coaches, and medical professionals to train and mentor athletes across disciplines—from boxing to archery and football.

The results were transformative. By the time of the 2012 London Olympics, the UK had re-established itself as a global sporting powerhouse, winning numerous medals and achieving glory in cycling, boxing, football and athletics.

The development of top-tier talent, from Anthony Joshua in boxing to champions in women’s football and youth teams in under-17, under-20, and under-21 categories, underscored the success of their strategic investment.

Morocco has also demonstrated the impact of targeted investment in sports. By replicating the St. George’s model with the Mohammed VI Football Academy, they quickly rose to prominence. In just 10 years, they are dominating African football in both the men and women’s game and became the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals.

Ghana doesn’t have to look far for inspiration. Our nation has a rich sporting history, particularly in football and boxing, with legends like Abedi Pele, Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan, Azumah Nelson, and Ike Quartey achieving greatness. Recently, our athletes training in the United States have showcased their potential in athletics.

To build on this legacy, we can start by transforming one of the STEM schools already established by the Ministry of Education into a multi-disciplinary sports academy. This approach would minimize initial costs while maximizing impact. Such a centre could feature football pitches, swimming pools, athletics tracks, boxing rings, and gyms, creating an environment where young talents can thrive and like St George’s Park, a place that doubles as a sports camp for our national teams.

By identifying and nurturing children as young as 10 who show exceptional promise in sports, we can offer scholarships and world-class training while also educating them in fields like business and sports science. This ensures that even those who do not achieve professional-level success in their chosen sport can contribute to society through related fields.

Tom Vernon’s Right to Dream Academy has already proven that such initiatives can succeed in Ghana. Now, it’s time to scale up. Imagine a national program supported by our sports legends as mentors, training the next generation of Ghanaian athletes while instilling discipline, pride, and resilience.

With the right leadership and vision, this initiative could transform Ghana’s sports landscape within the next 5–10 years. It’s an opportunity to create a blueprint for sports excellence, positioning Ghana as a global force while uplifting the economy and uniting the nation.

To the next Sports Minister: this is your chance to etch your name into Ghanaian history as the leader who laid the foundation for a new era of sports glory. The time to act is now.

Popular Ghanaian socialite Sister Derby has expressed skepticism about the recent fire outbreak at Kantamanto, raising doubts about what she described as the ‘unbothered’ demeanor of one of the market’s leaders.

During an interview with the Chairman of the Kantamanto Railway No. 2 Traders Association, Yiadom Adarkwa, at the scene of the incident, Sister Derby noticed what she described as an unusually indifferent and unperturbed composure from the chairman.

She questioned how someone in such a leadership position, dealing with a crisis of this magnitude, could remain so calm.

Sister Derby went on to express concern, stating that the chairman might have benefited from the fire incident.

“The chairman of Kantamanto doesn’t seem bothered at all oo. My guy, you collect some money or how because you seem so glad narrating the incident.

“I sense no empathy from his side for the hardworking traders who depend on Kant to survive!” she wrote in English and Pijin

She also took a moment to express deep sympathy for the traders who have been affected by the fire.

“Kantamanto burning is so so devastating. The biggest hub of sustainability and a livelihood for many is gone once again. Where the most upcycling and reusing of clothes giving them a second life, takes place, saving most clothes from ending up in our oceans and landfills, hence, reducing pollution to some extent. So sad for all the traders,” she added.

Meanwhile, hundreds of traders have been displaced after a devastating fire ravaged Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District, leaving nearly the entire market in ashes.

The blaze, which erupted late on January 2, 2024, caused widespread destruction, with traders desperately trying to salvage their goods as the flames spread rapidly.

The Ghana National Fire Service has reportedly responded with 13 fire tenders from across the Greater Accra Region to battle the fire.

Authorities have indicated that they are still working to determine the cause of the blaze and assess the extent of the damage.

The worst performers against the US dollar in 2024

0

File photo of Cedi and US Dollar notes File photo of Cedi and US Dollar notes

Over the past year, some African nations have improved the performance of their currencies against the US dollar while others continue to face challenges.

The challenges faced by African currencies include persistent trade imbalances, high inflation, political instability, and dwindling foreign reserves, which lead to depreciation.

Other challenges faced by some African nations in stabilizing their currencies include persistent inflation, high debt levels, and political instability.

These issues undermine efforts to achieve sustainable exchange rate improvements.

Exchange rates significantly impact a country’s inflation and the purchasing power of its currency.

A sharp depreciation can drive higher inflation by raising the cost of imported goods and services, placing additional strain on consumers and the economy.

As of August 1, 2023, Statista data revealed the performance of various African currencies against the US dollar.

The U.S. dollar’s status as a reserve currency, its role in international trade, and the stability of the U.S. economy makes it the most widely used benchmark for exchange rates worldwide.

Sierra Leone’s Leone had the highest exchange rate, with one dollar equaling 21,021.7 leones, marking it as the continent’s weakest currency.

It was followed by the Guinea Franc, which traded at 8,521 to the dollar, and the Malagasy Ariary, at 4,430.

The same data showed that one dollar was equivalent to 758.9 Nigerian Naira, 824 Angolan Kwaza, 599 Sudanese Pounds, 185 Liberian Dollar, 4.77 Libyan Dinar, 11 Ghanaian Cedi and 30.85 Egyptian Pounds highlighting the diversity in currency strength across the continent.

Recently, some nations have overcome inflationary pressures, strengthening their currencies, while others have faced steep fluctuations and worsening exchange rates.

The table below compares the dollar exchange rates of the worst-performing currencies in 2023 and December 31, 2024;

Nigeria’s Naira saw the steepest depreciation at 104.38%, followed by Malawi’s Kwacha at 66.82%, reflecting significant economic challenges.

A key factor in the naira’s decline was the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) decision to liberalize the foreign exchange market in June 2023.

While aimed at unifying exchange rates and attracting investment, the policy also introduced volatility, increasing pressure on the currency.

Rwanda and Congo also experienced double-digit declines of 19.41% and 16.65%, respectively, highlighting regional economic pressures.

Moderate changes were observed in Angola, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, and Burundi, where currency depreciations ranged from 5.63% to 10.68%.

Comoros, Uganda, and Guinea recorded smaller declines under 5%, suggesting relative stability. Notably, Liberia’s Dollar and Tanzania’s Shilling appreciated slightly, showcasing resilience in their exchange rate performance.

These trends reflect varied economic conditions across the continent, with some currencies showing stability while others experiencing severe depreciation.

This highlights the critical role of sound fiscal and monetary policies in mitigating exchange rate volatility and strengthening economic resilience.

A view of Ghana's Parliament A view of Ghana’s Parliament

Track Ghana’s foreign remittance to avoid begging for $3 billion – Dr. Atuahene to Mahama

0

Banking Consultant, Dr. Richmond Atuahene Banking Consultant, Dr. Richmond Atuahene

The banking consultant, Dr. Richmond Atuahene, says the incoming administration must keep an eye on the foreign remittance sector to avoid borrowing from the World Bank and seeking assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for US$3 billion.

He also stated that the President must assemble technocrats who can devise strategies to finance the nation’s substantial debts owed to contractors.

“He must appoint people who understand microeconomic issues to help him; that will be a significant advantage. The next step will be financing the debts, specifically the 31 million contractors’ debts and energy-related debts,” Dr. Atuahene explained.

“His Excellency must form a team like the one in place in 2010. They need a credible arrears repayment plan so that, maybe within three or four years, the debts will be cleared, and not a new one will be created. If this is done, the challenge becomes surmountable. With the right brains and technical people, they can achieve a lot in four years if they are allowed to help,” he stated on GHOne TV.

He continued, “Even remittances alone will surpass the IMF loan. If we are able to track them properly, we will not need to beg for US$3 billion.”

The banking consultant also advised that Mr. John Dramani Mahama, after his swearing-in as President, must establish a remittances unit at the Central Bank to track remittances.

According to him, while Ghana’s foreign remittances are substantial, very little of it passes through the banking sector.

“The first thing I want to advise the incoming President is to strengthen the remittance system or even create a new unit at the Central Bank, as Bangladesh does, where 95% of remittances go through the banking system. In Ghana, we only track about 50%, so the other 50% doesn’t enter the banking system.”

“In 2023, the World Bank reported US$4.7 billion in remittances, but we only tracked US$2.8 billion, so US$1.9 billion is unaccounted for. Previously, we tracked only half of the US$4.2 billion remitted. But if we implement a strong system, we will be able to track more,” Dr. Atuahene added.

“Once we are able to track remittances properly, it will help manage the economy, stabilize the cedi, and reduce inflation.”

  • Simplified workflows, enabling faster and more transparent trade operations.
  • Increased government revenue, solidifying ICUMS as a cornerstone of Ghana’s fiscal strategy.

Speaking at the event, President-Elect Mahama lauded Dr. Danso Adjei as a beacon of entrepreneurial excellence.

Recognized by the Outgoing President: The Grand Medal Award

In another development, just a few days to the end of the year, Dr. Danso Adjei was honored and presented with the Grand Medal Award by the outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the National Honours and Awards Ceremony. This prestigious recognition from the state acknowledged his tireless efforts in driving national development through technological innovation and efficient trade systems.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted ICUMS as a transformative initiative, noting its critical role in improving government revenue collection and streamlining operations at key entry points across the country, during his address the outgoing President stated:

“Dr. Nick Danso Adjei’s leadership exemplifies the impact of innovation and dedication. His work with ICUMS has set a new standard for trade facilitation, not only in Ghana but across Africa.”

A Year of Remarkable Achievements

Dr. Danso Adjei’s ability to receive awards from two of Ghana’s most prominent leaders in the same year is a testament to his unique position as an entrepreneur figure in the nation’s development narrative. While some may call him “lucky,” it is his hard work, innovation, and unwavering commitment to Ghana’s progress that have brought him this recognition.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Danso Adjei expressed gratitude for the honors, dedicating them to his team at Ghana Link Network Services Limited:

“These awards are not just about me but about the collective effort of a team committed to excellence and national development. They inspire us to continue delivering solutions that make a meaningful impact.”

The interesting features that earned attiéké a UNESCO status

0

File photo: A plate of well-garnished Attiéké File photo: A plate of well-garnished Attiéké

Attiéké, Ivory Coast’s beloved staple made from fermented cassava flour, was recently added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

Pronounced “atchekay,” this ground cassava couscous, often eaten with grilled fish, is enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Originally from Ivory Coast’s coastal areas centuries ago, attiéké has become popular across West Africa, according to the BBC.

Ivory Coast’s UNESCO delegate, Ramata Ly-Bakayoko, noted at the 19th session on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in Paraguay that attiéké is “deeply rooted in the daily lives of its communities.”

In Ivory Coast, attiéké is commonly served at weddings, baptisms, funerals, and community meetings.

Attiéké is more than a meal; it’s a livelihood and a path to financial autonomy for many women.

Traditionally made by women and girls, the process, which can take several days, involves peeling, grating, and mixing cassava root with previously fermented cassava.

The skills required to make attiéké have also been added to UNESCO’s heritage list.

The pulp of cassava is pressed to remove starch, then manually processed, dried, and steamed before being sold in local markets, typically in plastic bags containing a single ball of attiéké.

At its core, attiéké is a cultural connection passed down from mother to daughter, with its recipes, processes, and methods forming a key part of both individual and national identity, according to Ly-Bakayoko.

UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage highlights practices at risk, underscoring the need for preservation.

The inclusion of attiéké emphasizes its global cultural significance.

However, the dish has often sparked controversy, particularly in 2019, when Florence Bassono, founder of Faso Attiéké from Burkina Faso, won an award at the Abidjan International Agriculture Show, causing outrage in Ivory Coast.

Many Ivorians were upset that a foreigner won an award for their national dish, attiéké.

In response, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization registered a collective trademark earlier this year to prevent cassava from other countries from being sold under the name attiéké, similar to how champagne must be produced in France’s Champagne region.

CETAG declares indefinite strike on January 2 over unresolved grievances

0

File photo of Accra College of Education File photo of Accra College of Education

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike effective Thursday, January 2, 2025.

The announcement follows an Emergency National Council meeting held on December 30, 2024, where members resolved to take industrial action in response to unresolved issues with the government and other stakeholders.

According to a statement released by CETAG on December 31, 2024, the decision to strike follows repeated failures by the National Labour Commission (NLC) and other stakeholders to address critical concerns despite multiple notifications.

The key concerns outlined by CETAG include the government’s non-compliance with the National Labour Commission’s arbitration awards, the delayed migration of teaching staff onto affiliate universities’ pay structures, unpaid compensation for all-year-round work done in 2022, prolonged delays in issuing appointment letters based on staff audit reports, unpaid book and research allowances for staff at Akrokerri College of Education, and the lack of enforcement by the NLC to compel compliance with its directives.

“The employer’s continuous violation of signed agreements and roadmaps on the outstanding compulsory arbitration award issued by the NLC on May 2, 2023, has left us with no choice,” it noted.

The strike, according to CETAG, aligns with section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), emphasising that the action has become imperative due to the government’s persistent violation of signed agreements and roadmaps regarding the compulsory arbitration award issued by the NLC on May 2, 2023.

“Conclusively, the National Council of CETAG wishes to state unequivocally that members of the union shall not under any circumstance return to the colleges to undertake any official duties including teaching, and supervision of project work and macro-teaching, until the last pesewa is paid into our accounts,” it stated.

The strike is expected to significantly disrupt academic activities across Ghana’s colleges of education, including teaching and supervision of project work.

Stakeholders in the education sector, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the NLC, are being urged to act swiftly to prevent further disruptions.

Set up a foreign remittance unit at the Central Bank – Mahama government urged

0

Bank of Ghana Headquarters Bank of Ghana Headquarters

A banking consultant, Dr. Richmond Atuahene, says the incoming President, John Dramani Mahama, must set up a remittances unit at the Central Bank to track Ghana’s foreign remittances.

Speaking on GHOne TV, Dr. Atuahene disclosed that the figures on Ghana’s remittances are significant, but very little passes through the banking sector.

According to him, if the incoming administration focuses on the remittance sector, the nation will avoid borrowing from the World Bank or begging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for US$3 billion.

“The first thing I want to advise the incoming President is that he must strengthen the remittance system or even create a new unit at the Central Bank. For instance, Bangladesh tracks 95% of remittances through its banking system, while in Ghana, we only track about 50%. The other 50% does not go into the banking system,” Dr. Atuahene explained.

“In 2023, the World Bank reported US$4.7 billion in remittances, but we only tracked US$2.8 billion, leaving US$1.9 billion unaccounted for. Previously, when the total remittance was US$4.2 billion, we tracked only US$2.1 billion. Those funds are lost. However, if we implement a strong tracking system, we will be able to capture more of the remittances,” he stated.

Dr. Atuahene continued, “Once we are able to track remittances properly, it will help manage the economy, stabilize the cedi, and reduce inflation.”

The banking consultant also advised President-elect John Mahama to assemble a team of technocrats who will help devise strategies to finance the nation’s substantial debts owed to contractors.

“He must appoint people who understand microeconomic issues to help him. This will be a significant advantage for him. The next challenge will be financing the debts, including the US$31 million owed to contractors and energy sector debts,” he added.

“His Excellency must form a team like the one in place in 2010. They need a credible arrears repayment plan so that, within three or four years, the debts can be cleared, without creating new ones. If this is done, the challenge becomes surmountable. With the right brains and technical people, and if they are allowed to help, they can achieve a lot in four years.”

“Even remittances alone will be bigger than the IMF loan. If we track the remittances properly, we will not need to beg for US$3 billion,” Dr. Atuahene concluded.

Kete-Krachi (O/R), Jan 2, GNA – Mr Jonathan Akpabe, the Oti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged members of the party to remain united and focused following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Akpabe acknowledged the disappointment felt by many NPP supporters but stressed the importance of resilience and a renewed commitment to the party’s future.

“This year didn’t turn out as we had hoped. We aimed to break the ‘8,’ but the Ghanaian people have made their choice, and we must respect it. However, this is not the end of the journey for the NPP or for Ghana,” he stated.

He called on party members to avoid despair, emphasising that setbacks in politics are common.

“In every election, there’s a possibility of winning or losing. This time, we lost. But it is important to remember that we have not lost our vision for Ghana. We remain committed to building a better future,” he said.

Mr. Akpabe revealed that the party would undertake a thorough review of its strategies to address weaknesses and come back stronger.

“We will regroup, re-strategize, and plan effectively to reclaim our position. Our focus is on working harder and smarter to earn the trust of Ghanaians once again,” he assured.

He also expressed hope that the incoming government will continue policies initiated by the NPP, including the Free Senior High School programme and allowances for teachers and nurses.

Edudzi Tameklo warns against ‘slippery path’ in Tema Central mandamus case

0

Godwin Tameklo, legal counsel for NDC Godwin Tameklo, legal counsel for NDC

In the latest legal tussle surrounding the contentious Tema Central parliamentary election, Godwin Tameklo, legal counsel for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticized the arguments made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in court.

The NPP contends that Ebi Bright, the declared winner of the December 7, 2024 election, was not properly certified by an Electoral Commission (EC) official.

During a heated session, Tameklo urged the court to focus on its role within the scope of the mandamus application and not veer into uncharted territory.

“It is not the duty of this court to determine who won an election,” Tameklo argued.

“They are inviting you onto a very slippery path. If, in a mandamus application, it is within the remit of this court to make findings on alleged thuggery, intimidation, duress, and breaches of the law, what then will we do in an election petition?”

The case stems from disputes over the legitimacy of the declaration process in Tema Central.

Meanwhile, Tameklo presented to the court a letter authored by Charles Forson, one of the NPP applicants, in which he urged the Electoral Commission to instruct the returning officer to accurately compile and announce the results in compliance with legal standards.

School Feeding Caterers begin receiving outstanding salaries

0

Caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme have started receiving their overdue payments for the third term, according to the National President of the School Feeding Caterers Association, Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi.

This progress follows a promise made by the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, to settle the arrears.

Speaking to Citi News, Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi explained that while some caterers have successfully accessed their funds, others face delays due to bank holidays and limited banking facilities in rural areas.

“Thankfully, they kept their word and made the payment on 31st December around 6 p.m. Some caterers were able to access the money on 1st January because certain banks have e-zwich machines outside.

“However, others have reported difficulties in accessing the funds. Hopefully, by 2nd January, everyone will receive their alerts. The delay is largely due to today being a holiday, and caterers in rural areas without easy access to banks may need to wait until regular working days to confirm receipt,” she explained.

Nana Amoh Otu Sekyi also expressed hope that the arrears owed to caterers since 2019 would soon be addressed.

“The chief accountant contacted me on 31st December regarding the 2019 arrears. I will meet with them on 2nd January to discuss this further. We are optimistic about receiving positive news next week,” she added.

Background

The recent payments to caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme follow months of frustration and protest.

On December 30, scores of caterers staged a demonstration at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, demanding payment for arrears covering two academic terms for 2023 and 2024.

The caterers, who had traveled from various parts of the country, expressed their disappointment with the government’s repeated delays.

Despite assurances from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department that funds had been released to the Ministry, the caterers claimed they had yet to receive any payments.

President of the School Feeding Caterers Association, described the situation as dire, highlighting the financial strain on members who pre-financed meals with the expectation of timely reimbursement.

She noted that the government had promised on multiple occasions to settle their debts, but deadlines in August, September, and November all passed without payment.

The caterers’ decision to protest was a last resort, as many faced mounting pressure from creditors. Their demands for transparency and accountability came after the government issued a statement lacking an official signature promising payment by December 31. Skeptical of the promise, the caterers voiced their frustrations, citing years of unmet commitments.

Koku Anyidoho backs Mahama’s plan to rebuild Ghana with prayer and hard work

Former Deputy General Secretary of NDC Samuel Koku Anyidoho Former Deputy General Secretary of NDC Samuel Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has expressed support for the Mahama-led administration’s vision of resetting Ghana through a foundation of hard work and fervent prayer.

President-elect John Mahama has consistently emphasized that both prayer and hard work will be the backbone of the country’s governance when he assumes office.

Siding with this approach in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on January 1, 2024, Koku Anyidoho outlined his belief in the power of prayer, referencing the late President John Atta Mills’ style of leadership, which was deeply rooted in hard work and prayer.

“I saw President Mills work hard and also depend on his belief in God through fervent prayers. He personally prayed before and after every Cabinet meeting. I personally believe in prayers. If we are resetting to the days of fervent prayer and hard work, great yes. Ghana 🇬🇭 First praying,” he stated.

It would be recalled that during Mahama’s 2024 election campaign, he pledged to declare a ‘National Day of Prayer’ if elected, stating his commitment to seeking God’s guidance in governance.

Since his victory, Mahama has reiterated his commitment to embarking on prayers.

In his New Year message, Mahama pledged, “This is the time we need to engage in fervent prayers more than we did during the campaign, for God to grant us the strength and wisdom to implement measures that will make Ghana a better place to live. All I will say is that it is finished; God has already done it.

“We will work tirelessly to correct the outgoing administration’s many wrongs, tackle corruption with dogged determination, and reduce excessive government expenditures.”
