Plaque of Prof. Mills’ statue repaired, Anyidoho and Akufo-Addo’s names omitted
(L – R) The statue of the late Prof Mills with destroyed plaque and the statue with the new plaque
The plaque on the statue of the late former President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, at the former president’s resting place, Asomdwee Park, which was destroyed, has been repaired.
The details of the earlier plaque that was destroyed read, “This was unveiled by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, and assisted by Samuel Koku Anyidoho, Founder and CEO Atta-Mills Institute.”
The new plaque has the inscription, “Here lie the mortal remains of Professor John Evans Atta Mills, 21 July 1944 – 24 July 2013, President of the Republic of Ghana, 07 January 2009 – 24 July 2012.”
The new development was shared by the Chief Executive Officer of the Atta-Mills Institute and former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho.
Anyidoho shared a photo collage of the statue with the old plaque and the new one with the caption:
“The original writing and the new one. The heavens have already declared the glory of God.”
Koku Anyidoho took to social media to express his frustration over the vandalism of the statue on Wednesday, January 8, 2024.
Visuals of the incident showed the plaque of the statue, which named Koku Anyidoho as the person who assisted with its unveiling, removed.
The writings on the plaque, before it was destroyed, showed details of the late former president and the inscription, “Assisted by Samuel Koku Anyidoho.”
Although the plaque of the statue could be seen broken into pieces, the sculpture of the late Prof. Mills was intact and still standing.
It is not clear who removed the plaque, but Asomdwee Park is a state property, intended to be the resting place of the country’s presidents who pass on.
Koku Anyidoho, in the post he shared on X on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, took solace in God over the destruction of the plaque.
“This just happened @ Asomdwee Park. My Bible tells me that ‘In All Things’ (not in some things), I should give thanks to God. I am also singing… ‘It is well with my soul’. To God be all the glory, and my prayer is for God to continue blessing my beloved Homeland Ghana,” he wrote.

West Ham United coach counts on Kudus’ creativity amid injury crisis
West Ham United midfielder, Mohammed Kudus
New West Ham United coach, Graham Potter, is expecting Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus to be one of the creative sparks in the team.
With West Ham experiencing a dearth in attack due to injuries to some of their strikers, Graham Potter is expecting Mohammed Kudus to step up for the team.
Speaking ahead of West Ham’s game against Fulham, Graham Potter said that he is counting on Mohammed Kudus’ creativity as the team seeks to navigate a run of tough games without strikers Michail Antonio and Fulkrug.
“Sometimes in these situations [with several absences in one position], you have to be creative. You have to look at the attacking players you have and what their attributes are and use them accordingly, so Mo’s [Kudus] got the capability to do that. It’s an option for us,” he said.
Potter also hinted at a possible change in Kudus’ position, noting that he thrives more in the right midfield position.
“Mo was really dangerous,” Potter remarked. “He’s got some good attributes. He worked really well in the first half, pressing, won some balls, and carried a threat. He was affected by the team in the second half because it was more difficult for him to get into the game.”
“He [Kudus] played more centrally than he has done for a bit. He quite likes that central role to the right… he offers us a good option, absolutely,” he said.
In the 2024/2025 season, Mohammed Kudus has scored three goals in eighteen appearances for West Ham.

Toll collection for just GH¢1 isn’t worth the stress – Kofi Bentil laments
Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Ghana
Vice President of IMANI Ghana, Kofi Bentil, has strongly criticized the use of toll booths as an inefficient and costly method of revenue collection.
His remarks follow a statement by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister-designate, who promised to reinstate toll collection across the country.
In a Facebook post on January 14, 2025, Bentil questioned the logic behind the toll collection system, citing the significant time and resources spent at toll booths for minimal returns.
“It doesn’t make sense to waste time and stress for an hour just to pay GH¢1,” he stated, emphasising the disproportionate costs involved in maintaining the toll booths.
Bentil highlighted that the toll system has consistently proven to be an expensive means of collecting only a fraction of the funds it aims to generate.
“As usual, we will be penny wise and pound foolish,” he remarked, urging the government to reconsider its approach to infrastructure funding.
Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, also contributed to the discussion, offering a potential solution to the inefficiencies of the toll collection system.
In the same post, Cudjoe suggested, “Increase it and make it electronic. No one queues then, or?”
Cudjoe’s proposal for an electronic tolling system aims to reduce congestion and streamline the payment process, aligning with Bentil’s call to modernize the system.
Bentil offered two alternatives saying, “There are two ways – collect them as part of licensing fees or use electronic systems, so there is no stopping.”
This criticism comes after Dr. Ato Forson, nominated as Minister of Finance by President John Mahama, confirmed his intention to reinstate toll collection as part of a broader plan to boost government revenue.

Ablakwa unveils Mahama’s plan to ban politicians from buying state assets
The Chairman of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) has announced a policy initiative to permanently ban politicians and politically exposed persons from acquiring state assets.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, speaking on PM Express on Monday, January 13, described this move as a central element of President John Mahama’s agenda to ensure accountability and protect public resources.
The North Tongu MP stressed the need for lasting institutional reforms to address the systemic abuse of power by some public officials.
“What I like about what the new President has talked about is that he is going to make sure that there are lasting institutional reforms,” Mr. Ablakwa noted.
“The bill I’m talking about will ensure that we ban politicians and politically exposed persons from buying state assets. That will be major.”
The ORAL initiative, which has been in operation since Mahama’s return to power, focuses on recovering misappropriated state resources, ensuring transparency, and preventing future abuses.
Mr. Ablakwa stressed that ORAL is not a short-term effort but a permanent feature of governance aimed at transforming the culture of public accountability in Ghana.
“There’s a misconception that everything about ORAL ends when the Attorney General takes office—far from it. ORAL is a permanent feature, transitioning from gathering data to actual prosecutions, retrievals, and reforms,” the MP said.
He also outlined the multi-phase approach of ORAL, which includes transitioning from the current preparatory phase of data collection to full-scale legal action.
“We will move from this preparatory phase to where we will now have the institutions of state really deal with the actual matters to resolve the crisis—prosecutions, retrievals, surcharges, and disallowances.
“We aim to recover as much as possible because if not, all of this effort in putting the data together will have come to waste,” he explained.
Mr. Ablakwa acknowledged the challenges whistleblowers face under the current system and assured the public of ORAL’s commitment to protecting those who provide critical information.
“The confidence people will have in an ORAL setup is really important. People don’t feel confident under the current whistleblower regime because whistleblowers have often become targets and paid hefty prices. We’re changing that,” he stated.
In addition to banning politically exposed persons from acquiring state assets, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that President Mahama has promised a thorough probe into the misuse of state lands.
“The President has committed to a comprehensive probe on state lands. Many of them will be appropriated and returned to the Ghanaian people who own this land,” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa further highlighted the role of Ghana’s institutions in executing ORAL’s agenda.
“The Attorney General will look at all the evidence we’ve collated so far and decide on prosecutions. Other cases may go to EOCO or the OSP for issues like corruption or money laundering. The institutions will do their work,” he said.
The ORAL chairman assured Ghanaians that this initiative is not a temporary political strategy but a transformative approach to governance.
“Expect to see a lot more action in terms of the actual execution to recover the loot. This is not a flash in the pan. ORAL will not fade away,” Mr. Ablakwa concluded.
Mahama to announce major security appointments this week
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to announce key security appointments by the end of the week as part of efforts to address the ongoing conflict in Bawku and its surrounding areas.
This development follows the recent nomination of ministers-designate for Finance, Energy and Green Transition, and the Office of the Attorney General and Justice.
Speaking at the Bawku Naba Palace during an address to the chiefs and people of the Kusaug Traditional Area, President Mahama emphasized that the security appointments are a crucial first step in his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and stability to the conflict-ridden region.
“And so within this week, we’ll do the appointments of the Minister for Defence, the Minister for Interior, the National Security co-ordinator, the national security advisor, the BNI director; and when these appointments are made I am going to charge them to make Bawku one of their major priorities.”
“This last election has cemented our reputation as the leading democracy in Africa and a good part of the thanks goes to you the security services who have maintained peace.
He expressed confidence that the new security measures would help de-escalate tensions and promote harmony in Bawku.
“We still have threats to our peace that we must continue to look at internally and externally. Internally to do with chieftaincy disputes and some incidents of armed robbery and things like that. Externally to do with the threats on our northern borders and so we cannot let our vigilance down”, President Mahama added.

Implications on Ghana’s economy in 2025 and beyond
President John Dramani Mahama at his swearing-in ceremony
In our previous article, “Economic Evolution – Can a 24-Hour Economy Be the Solution to Our Structural Challenges?” published in Business and Financial Times and myjoyonline.com on October 8th, 2024 earlier this year, we explored the potential of a 24-hour economy as a transformative solution to some of the persistent structural challenges faced by Ghana.
The idea of a 24-hour economy is not new, but its relevance has gained new momentum, particularly as countries worldwide continue to adopt innovative solutions to foster growth.
As we approach 2025, the landscape of global trade, finance, and economic interaction is changing rapidly, driven by digital technology. One such innovation that is altering the economic framework is the rapid adoption of digital currencies.
The convergence of a 24-hour economy and the adoption of digital currencies provides a compelling opportunity for Ghana to reshape its economic future. The 24-hour economy, where businesses and economic activities operate beyond the typical nine-to-five cycle, offers the potential to tap into untapped revenue streams, optimize productivity, and create jobs. Crucially, the widespread use of digital currencies could further accelerate this transformation.
Cryptocurrencies, in particular, have emerged as one of the most dynamic components of this new economic landscape. In enabling faster, borderless, and more secure transactions, digital currencies are not only enhancing financial inclusion but also creating a robust mechanism to fuel continuous, global economic engagement.

Ho residents face third week of water crisis
Residents in Ho and nearby communities in the Volta Region are still grappling with a severe water crisis as supply disruptions enter their third week.
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has attributed the prolonged shortage to a setback in emergency repairs at the Kpeve Headworks, where the system broke down again just days after being fixed.
GWCL is, however, assuring residents that efforts are underway to address the issue and restore water supply promptly.
Wisdom Semevor, the Volta Regional Commercial Manager for the GWCL stated: “You know we are working with a machine… and for now it is being worked on. But definitely we have to get a new one as a long-term measure,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the situation is disrupting daily activities, with affected residents stating that it is impacting their financial lives.

There is no unity in Kumawood, we just pretended at C Confion’s funeral
Kumawood actor, Kwaku Manu
Kumawood actor, Kwaku Manu, has shed light on some of the challenges within the movie industry.
According to him, there is “no unity” among actors in the industry.
His comments come following the funeral of popular actor and skit maker, C Confion, who passed away in December 2024.
His funeral, held on January 11, saw many celebrities and personalities in attendance, even as they interacted with each other.
This led many fans to believe that love had returned to the industry once more.
However, Kwaku Manu, speaking in an interview on Fakye Showbiz, claimed that all is still not well in the industry.
According to him, such interactions were just put up due to the funeral.
“We are workers, not friends. When we are done working, each and everyone has his or her friend. We are not normally united like this. You are only seeing us smiling and interacting with each other like this because someone is dead,” he said.
Manu also stated that he was sidelined for four years due to ongoing issues in the industry.
He criticised the industry’s financial practices, noting that the money meant for paying big actors is often distributed among the newly famed actors instead.
This, he argued, undermines the contributions of long-standing actors and affects their livelihoods.
“When the industry got Kwaku Manu, they got apostle John Pra and they got Akrobeto. When you feature all these actors, people would want to watch so it would favour the producers.
“But what they do is that the money they are supposed to use to pay the big actors, they would rather share it among the new famed actors,” he claimed.

Current anti-LGBTQ+ bill is effectively dead, should be government-sponsored
President John Dramani Mahama has suggested a government sponsored anti-LGBTQ bill
President John Dramani Mahama has suggested a government-sponsored LGBTQ+ bill, as opposed to one led by private members.
According to him, making the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which aims to criminalise homosexual practices and impose strict laws, a government-sponsored initiative would allow the country’s cultural values to be integrated into various curricula taught to students.
He explained that this approach would remove the need for a separate bill aimed at enforcing family values in the country to be legislated.
Speaking to a delegation of Catholic bishops from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference during a courtesy call on January 14, 2025, Mahama said, “I think it should not be a Private Member’s Bill, but a government-sponsored one.
“If we were teaching our values in schools, we wouldn’t need to pass a bill to enforce our family values, and that is why I think more than even the family values bill, is us agreeing on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they are growing up, so that we don’t need to legislate it,” he said.
The president, expressing his commitment, called for broader consultations and renewed discussions among stakeholders to reach a consensus on the way forward.
“I don’t know what the promoters of the bill intend to do, but I think we should have a conversation on it again so that all of us, if we decide to move on the way forward, we move forward with a consensus,” he added.
President Mahama highlighted the challenges encountered by the initial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which was introduced as a Private Member’s Bill.
Reflecting on the legislative obstacles of the previous bill, he explained that it did not reach the president’s desk for assent due to legal and procedural issues.
“But as far as I know, the bill did not get to the president. And so, the convention is that all bills that are not ascended to before the expiration of the life of Parliaments expire. And so, that bill effectively is dead, it has expired,” he stated.

3 million ECG smart meters malfunctioning nationwide
John Jinapor, Minister of Energy-designate
The Minister of Energy-designate, John Jinapor, has indicated that prepaid meters should be sold to ensure effective and readily available meter usage in the country.
According to him, numerous faulty meters are not working and require attention.
During his appearance before the Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, he emphasised the importance of leveraging technology to address meter issues in the country.
He stated, “The best approach is to sell prepaid meters. My discussions with ECG revealed they have about 5.2 million meters, with only 4.8 million currently active. Approximately 3 million are not functioning properly, necessitating the replacement of at least 2.9 million meters to meet market demand.
“Individuals with faulty meters are unable to obtain replacements. We are considering the option of selling meters and licensing individuals to install them. By making them readily available, we can effectively address the problem,” he added.

Guardiola purchased the upscale property, situated in a prime Barcelona neighbourhood, from a Russian businessman in February 2021.

ORAL established to serve political interests – Ansah-Asare
Kwaku Ansah-Asare, former director of the Ghana School of Law, has expressed strong reservations about the government’s decision to establish the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) committee.
He argued that the country already has several anti-corruption and crime-fighting institutions capable of handling such tasks, and suggested that the president could have empowered these existing bodies instead of creating a new committee.
Ansah-Asare accused the government of using ORAL to further a political agenda, asserting that the operation is unlikely to produce any meaningful outcomes.
“They may mean well, but from my perspective, ORAL is just about settling political goals. We don’t need that sort of thing,” he said during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, January 14.
Mr Ansah-Asare called on President John Dramani Mahama to abolish the ORAL committee, stating that failure to do so will lead to “the embarrassment of the person who set it up. The earlier he scraps it, the better.”
“Overall, ORAL will become one of the many entities presidents have established only to realise that members of the committee will take the law into their own hands and do things that, from a commonsense perspective, should not be done.”

A Plus threatens to name Ahmed Suale’s killer if no police update in 48 hours
The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service to provide an update on the murder investigation of Ahmed Suale.
Ahmed Suale, an investigative journalist and a key member of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’s Tiger Eye PI team, was tragically shot and killed in January 2019 in Madina, Accra. His death sent shockwaves across the nation, prompting widespread calls for justice.
However, nearly six years later, law enforcement agencies have made little progress, leaving the case unresolved and the perpetrators at large.
In a Facebook post on January 14, A Plus expressed his frustration over the lack of transparency and updates regarding the investigation.
He cautioned that if no information is forthcoming within the stipulated time, he would exercise his authority as a Member of Parliament to summon the Ghana Police Service to brief Parliament on the status of the case.
“If no update is provided within 48 hours, I will invoke my authority as a Member of Parliament to formally summon the Ghana Police Service to brief Parliament on this case.”
A Plus voiced his frustration over the lack of progress in the investigation, suggesting that the case appears to have been sidelined.
He called on the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to update the public on the status of the case, including whether additional time is needed to bring the investigation to a conclusion.
“It is critical that the CID director updates the public on the progress of the investigation,” A Plus stated. “At this point, it appears the matter has been sidelined.”
A Plus revealed that in 2024, he was invited to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, where he provided critical information about the case.
He claimed to have identified a former government minister as the individual who allegedly contracted the assailants to commit the crime.
A Plus further warned that if no progress is made, he would disclose his knowledge of the case, including the name of the alleged perpetrator, on social media.
“Should that fail, I will utilise my Facebook and other social media platforms to update the nation on what I know about the matter, which will include the name of the alleged perpetrator.”

Dede Ayew, Agyemang-Badu ‘want answers’ before cashing matured Black Satellites investment
Dede Ayew and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu want some answers and clarifications on the GH₵10,000 invested by government for 15 years on their behalf before going for the matured investment. Here’s how much each player has received and why…
Andre Dede Ayew and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu are holding out on cashing their matured investment until their questions, regarding the GH₵10,000 investment package for winning the 2009 Under-20 World Cup, are answered.
Despite 11 other players cashing their cheques, the two players say they want to understand the breakdown of the investment package before taking further steps.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a statement released on Friday, January 10, 2025, confirmed that SAS Finance Group has written to the Association to invite 21 players to receive their matured investments from the money invested over 15 years.
And since that time more than half of the playing body have gone ahead to receive an amount of GH₵ 70,760 each, according to Badu.
There was a bit of controversy about it, and although I have not collected mine. I can confirm that about 11 players have received their money.
Speaking in an interview on Angel TV last night, the former Udinese midfielder said he has not gone for his share yet because he wants some clarifications first.
He stated that he went to the offices of the investment company, SAS Finance Group, to get a better understanding of the investment package.
I have got a policy I live by, which is that if someone does something for me and I want to accept it, I need an explanation first. Therefore, I went to the bank to seek clarification and reported the matter to some of my elders for clarification.
He also disclosed that the captain of the 2009 Black Satellites team Dede Ayew has also directed Fiifi Tackie, his representative, not to go for the funds until all issues are clarified.
As of today, I can confirm that Dede Ayew has given the Power of Attorney to Fiifi Tackie not to collect his funds and to hold off mine as well so that we can seek answers.
A 2009 Ghana News Agency (GNA) report projected the estimated maturity amount to be GH₵163,000 after 15 years with then Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr Valerie Sawyer, quoted as saying each player will receive at least GH₵100,000 in the event of force majeure, that is, ill-health, death or accident.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear if the 15-year bond investment received a haircut or part was used to pay for insurance as alluded by Badu, hence, them receiving less than the projected maturity amount.

Mahama Ayariga tipped to replace Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Majority Leader in Parliament
Mahama Ayariga is the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central
Reports indicate that the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, will be appointed as the Majority Leader in the 9th Parliament, replacing the current Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, if the latter is confirmed as Minister of Finance, according to a report by graphic.com.gh.
Dr. Ato Forson, the finance minister-designate, was vetted by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025.
If he is approved as minister, he may not be able to juggle both roles, hence, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament would need to appoint a new leader.
Following this, Mahama Ayariga has been tipped as a possible successor to the Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam.
The report noted that Ayariga’s nomination is currently being considered by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership.
Before Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson became leader of the NDC caucus in January 2023, it was Haruna Iddrisu who led the side from January 2017 in the 7th and 8th Parliaments.
When Haruna Iddrisu, the MP for Tamale South, was changed, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, explained that the sudden change was due to the party’s restructuring from the grassroots to the flagbearer.
When it became clear that Ato Forson had been nominated for the finance minister portfolio, many, including the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, made a case for Mahama Ayariga to succeed Ato Forson.
Here is a profile of Mahama Ayariga
Mahama Ayariga, a lawyer and politician, was born on May 24, 1974, in Bawku in the Upper East.
He attended school in Ghana, Nigeria, and the United States of America. He also attended Barewa College in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Mahama Ayariga served as Minister of Information and Media Relations and Minister of Youth and Sports under the previous John Dramani Mahama administration.
He holds a Master of Law (LLM) from Harvard Law School in the United States of America and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon.
The legislator started his career as a Teaching Assistant in Natural Resources Law and International Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana.
He also co-founded and was the Executive Director of the Legal Resources Centre, an organisation that promotes human rights, community development, and social justice.
His journey to Parliament began in January 2005, when he represented the Bawku Central Constituency. However, in 2008, he lost his seat to Adamu Dramani Sakande of the New Patriotic Party in the 2008 elections.
The seat became vacant when Adamu was convicted and jailed for contesting and winning an election while being a citizen of another country, which is against the 1992 constitution.
Ayariga, however, recaptured the seat in the 2012 election.
During President John Evans Atta Mills’ tenure in 2009, Ayariga was a Presidential Spokesman and later a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and Deputy Minister of Education.

Adam Bonaa slams Afenyo-Markin over conduct at ministerial vetting
Adam Bonaa has slammed Afenyo-Markin
Security expert, Adam Bonaa, has expressed his strong disapproval of the outcome of events during the ministerial vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
Speaking on GH One TV on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Adam Bonaa acknowledged the respectful behavior of the first-time MPs on the committee.
However, he seemed to take issue with the conduct of the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, suggesting that his actions during the vetting were less than ideal.
He noted that the lawmaker’s provocative and disruptive behavior appeared to be inappropriate, even describing it as ‘disgusting.’
“For me, I just think that this is not what we are paying our Members of Parliament to do. I have to be very honest. What happened was very disgusting and it wasn’t good. I was expecting cool heads,” he said.
Bonaa went on to suggest that Afenyo-Markin’s posture seemed to show a lack of respect towards the committee’s Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor.
“The chairman is in the chair, everybody must pay attention to him. It is his show, listen to him and if you disagree, let the others talk and you will be given the opportunity to talk. But the way it happened it’s almost like they were in a debating class,” he added.
He cautioned, however, that if such behaviors continue from the Minority caucus in the future, it could make things more challenging, as it would distract people, rather than serve the purpose of informing them.
“If the Minority side is going to go this way, it becomes very difficult because then if you ask me what were some of the questions that I remember and the answers, all I heard was ‘chairman, chairman’ and he said it a hundred times,” Bonaa added.
Bonaa further advised Afenyo-Markin to reduce his provocative and disruptive demeanor, suggesting that his attitude largely overshadowed the questions he posed to the nominees during the vetting.
“Yaw Boamah, Sammi Awuku all did well. I think the Minority Leader needs to tone down. Don’t want to be noticed, rather let your questions be noticed. His temperament and others were noticed but not his questions,” he advised.
His comments follow concerns raised by some members of the public regarding the lawmaker’s provocative behavior during the vetting.
He was involved in several heated exchanges with members of the committee, particularly the chairman, and even staged a brief walkout during the vetting.
He cited the Chairman’s biased treatment of NPP members on the committee as the reason for his actions.
However, he returned later to participate in the conclusion of the vetting.

Cashew traders raise alarm over market disruption by foreign buyers
File photo of Cashew nuts
The Cashew Traders and Exporters Association of Ghana is calling for urgent government intervention to address what they describe as a growing threat to their industry posed by unauthorized foreign buyers.
According to the Association, these individuals, whom they allege are operating under the guise of exporters, are purchasing cashew crops at inflated prices far above the official rate.
This practice, the traders argue, undermines local trade practices, destabilizes the market, and poses a significant risk to the long-term viability of the cashew industry.
Mr. Kwabena Owusu, National Organizer of the Cashew Traders and Exporters Association, highlighted the issue in an interview with Asona Dehyie Kwateng.
He stated that foreign buyers are purchasing cashews at prices as high as GHS20 to GHS25 per kilogram, well above the official rate of GHS15 set by the tree crop authorities.
“These foreign buyers are even purchasing unripe cashews at exorbitant prices, which disrupts the market and causes genuine traders to lose business,” Mr. Owusu lamented.
He added that the practice compromises the integrity of the industry, as unripe cashews do not meet quality standards and could harm Ghana’s reputation in international markets.
The Association is appealing to the government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, to take immediate action to halt these activities.
They warn that the continued unchecked involvement of these foreign buyers could lead to the collapse of the local cashew market, leaving farmers and legitimate traders in financial ruin.
“We are urging the government to step in before it’s too late. If this continues, the market will destabilize, and farmers will ultimately bear the brunt of the damage when these foreign buyers pull out,” Mr. Owusu stressed.
The traders are calling on the government to investigate and enforce regulations that ensure fair and sustainable trade practices within the cashew industry.
They believe stricter oversight and adherence to pricing guidelines set by the tree crop authorities will protect local businesses and farmers from exploitation.
The Association also expressed concerns about the broader impact of these activities, emphasizing the need to preserve the industry’s sustainability and reputation in both local and international markets.
“Without immediate action, Ghana risks losing one of its most promising agricultural sectors,” Mr. Owusu concluded.
Kai Havertz’s pregnant wife receives threats after Arsenal’s FA Cup loss to Manchester United
Kai Havertz with his wife, Sophia
Sophia, the wife of Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz, has revealed that she received threats regarding their unborn child on social media after Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup.
Sophia shared some of the threatening messages she received on her Instagram page.
Speaking on the incident, Havertz’s wife expressed shock at the messages and admonished those responsible to stop.
“For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is shocking to me. I hope you are ashamed of yourself. I’m not sure what to say, but please, guys, be more respectful. We are better than this,” she said.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta condemned the act and emphasized the need for action against the culprits to deter others.
“Honestly, we really have to do something about it. Accepting and hiding this has terrible consequences. We need to eradicate this from the game because it is so cynical.
“When we play each week, and Kai Havertz scores a goal, the whole stadium sings his name. That was just 20 days ago, so what’s the perspective? We are all responsible, and that includes everyone,” he said.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have reported the incident to the police, who are working with a specialist data firm to identify the culprit and take appropriate action.
The couple have been together since 2018 and got married in 2024, with the pregnancy announcement made in November 2024.
The threats came after Havertz missed a penalty in Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup which led to their elimination from the competition.

The quality of leadership in Africa has declined
Former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma
Former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has expressed great concern regarding the decline in the quality of leadership across Africa, attributing it to interference and a lack of proactiveness.
He highlighted challenges that have diminished Africa’s once vibrant voice on the global stage.
“We [Africa] became a kind of democracy that people were talking about at the beginning, but something interfered with Africa, as we know. For example, there was a coup d’état, where Western countries were actually organising the coup d’état against us. We tried to come in thereafter once again. And I think Africa was becoming very strong once again. I think they shifted Africa to quite an extent,” he said.
According to citinewsroom.com, this statement was made during an interview on Channel One TV’s Point of View.
The former president shed light on the shift in political culture, where leaders today feel reluctant to responding decisively to critical issues.
“I think if you talk about today in Africa, there are issues that are there which you wonder why, as well as how we gradually began to make Africa no longer articulate about itself as it were. I mean even now, there are certain things that are happening in parts of the continent,” he remarked.
He expressed concern about the lack of robust actions from African leaders, contrasting the present-day inactivity with the more vocal and united approach of past leaders.
“But the continent is more quiet than it would have been during that time. Leaders would be moved immediately. These days, leaders are very reluctant and quiet. Even if things are going wrong, that tells you the standard is no longer the same,” he added.
Jacob Zuma further commended President John Dramani Mahama, describing him as the perfect leader required in Africa.
According to the former president, Mahama’s re-election is a positive achievement for Ghana and an inspiring model for Africa.

Osibisa’s Teddy Osei passes away in London
Celebrated Ghanaian musician, Teddy Osei of Osibisa fame has died at 88.
The unfortunate event occurred on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 in London.
President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons confirmed the sad news to Citi News, describing Teddy Osei’s death as a loss of one of Ghana’s greatest musical icons.
Teddy Osei, who co-founded Osibisa in 1969 was renowned for blending Afrobeat, highlife and rock to create a globally recognised sound.
Born in December 1937 in Kumasi, his musical journey began in his youth when he was first introduced to musical instruments.
His passion for music led him to pick up the saxophone during his college years in Sekondi, where he attempted to form a band with friends.
Interestingly, he took up the instrument when the original saxophonist failed to attend practices.
Teddy honed his skills by playing along to jazz records, a self-taught practice that shaped his artistry.
After completing college, Osei briefly worked as a building inspector before forming his first band, The Comets, which enjoyed moderate success.
In 1962, he traveled to London on a government grant to study music and drama. However, political changes in Ghana forced him to leave the program after three years.

Exploring the intersection of culture, sociology, and science education in Ghana
David Ayensu, US-based Ghanaian teacher
The recent killing of a man in Gomoa Dago, Ghana’s Central Region, following his alleged refusal to accept a chieftaincy title has sparked profound questions about the cultural dynamics and sociological frameworks within Ghanaian society.
This tragic event highlights how deeply rooted cultural traditions can intersect with sociological constructs, influencing the development of modern education, particularly in science and technology.
From Tradition to Tension
Chieftaincy in Ghana is more than a ceremonial role; it embodies the cultural values, governance systems, and community identity preserved through generations. For many communities, traditional leaders are seen as custodians of heritage, mediators of disputes, and stewards of societal cohesion. However, the Gomoa Dago incident shows how these cultural practices can evolve into sources of tension when individual autonomy clashes with collective expectations.
The deceased, whose name remains undisclosed, allegedly declined the chieftaincy title due to personal reasons, sparking disputes within the community. This refusal to participate in a traditional role has reignited debates about the role of cultural heritage in a rapidly modernizing Ghanaian society.
The Sociological Lens: Education as a Mediator
Sociologists have long observed the tension between cultural traditions and the demands of modernity in Ghana, especially in areas like education. While cultural heritage emphasizes community obligations and ancestral roles, modern education, particularly in the sciences, promotes critical thinking, individualism, and technological innovation. These competing values often create a dichotomy for individuals navigating both worlds.
In rural communities like Gomoa Dago, where traditional practices hold significant sway, the integration of science education presents a unique challenge. Sociological studies reveal that the success of education systems depends heavily on how well they address the cultural and economic realities of their contexts. Science education, in particular, must adapt to these local dynamics to foster societal growth without alienating cultural identities.
Science Education and the Chieftaincy Paradigm
The Gomoa Dago tragedy underscores the need for science education to take on a broader role in addressing sociocultural issues. Science education in Ghana is not merely about imparting technical knowledge; it can also serve as a tool for social transformation, helping communities reconcile traditional practices with modern values.
For example, introducing sociological principles into science curricula could help students understand the historical and cultural significance of roles like chieftaincy while fostering critical perspectives on issues such as autonomy, gender equity, and social justice. By framing science education within the cultural context, educators can encourage dialogue on how traditions can coexist with modern innovations without leading to conflict.
Implications for Sociocultural Progress
The Gomoa Dago incident highlights a critical gap in how traditional systems and modern education coexist in Ghana. To bridge this divide, policymakers and educators must create platforms for open dialogue between cultural custodians and educational stakeholders. This dialogue could include:
Integrating Cultural Studies into Science Education
Providing students with a balanced understanding of Ghanaian traditions alongside scientific methodologies can help bridge the gap between cultural and technological paradigms.
Promoting Critical Thinking: Encouraging individuals to critically assess traditions while respecting their value can empower communities to adapt cultural practices to modern realities.
Fostering Community Engagement: Educational initiatives should involve traditional leaders and community members in discussions on science and technology, ensuring mutual respect and understanding.
A Path Forward
The tragic events in Gomoa Dago offer a poignant reminder of the challenges Ghana faces in balancing tradition and modernity. As the nation aspires to become a hub for scientific and technological innovation, it must also address the sociological and cultural underpinnings of its communities.
Science education has the potential to play a transformative role in this process. By equipping individuals with the tools to critically engage with both cultural and modern systems, it can pave the way for a society that values its heritage while embracing progress. The integration of these perspectives into Ghana’s educational framework could serve as a catalyst for social cohesion and national development.
As investigations continue into the incident, the hope remains that this tragedy will spark meaningful conversations about how to harmonize Ghana’s rich cultural traditions with the demands of a rapidly changing world. Through education, dialogue, and mutual understanding, the nation can create a future where tradition and modernity coexist peacefully.

In a shocking turn of events, a 25-year-old church secretary has been arrested alongside a married man, Hayford Kofi Baah, over allegations of embezzling GHS 300,000 from church funds. The funds were reportedly used to support Baah’s alleged partner’s tertiary education and travel expenses to Canada. This scandal not only raises questions about financial oversight within religious institutions but also highlights the personal lives and choices of those involved.
The embezzlement came to light after discrepancies in the church’s financial records were noticed during a routine audit. Once the church leadership began investigating the matter, it became evident that a considerable amount of funds was missing. The involvement of a trusted church official, in this case, has sent shockwaves throughout the community, leaving congregation members grappling with feelings of betrayal and disbelief.
Hayford Kofi Baah, a married man, has faced intense scrutiny for what many see as a severe breach of trust. The impact of his actions ripples not only through the church community but also raises significant ethical questions about personal relationships and responsibilities. As details continue to emerge regarding the nature of his relationship with the secretary, the case brings to light the complex layers of loyalty, betrayal, and moral accountability.
As the investigation unfolds, both the church and the community are awaiting further developments regarding the legal proceedings. The incident underscores the absolute necessity for transparency and accountability in all financial dealings, especially within organizations that are held to high ethical standards. For the church, rebuilding trust among its members will be essential in moving forward from this troubling chapter.

Anti-LGBTQ+ bill should be govt-sponsored, not a private member’s bill – Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has proposed a potential new approach to the contentious Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, suggesting it should be introduced as a government-sponsored bill rather than a private member’s bill.
During an engagement with the Catholic Bishops Conference in Accra on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, President Mahama emphasized that government sponsorship would lend the bill greater legitimacy and enhance its chances of successful passage.
He explained that presenting the bill as a government initiative would demonstrate broader institutional backing and reflect a more unified stance on the matter.
The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill has been a polarizing topic in Ghana, drawing both support and criticism domestically and internationally. The suggestion for government sponsorship signals a shift in strategy that could potentially influence how the bill is debated and perceived.
“I don’t know what the promoters of the bill intend to do, but I do think that we should have a conversation on it again so that all of us, if we decide to move that bill forward, move it forward with a consensus and probably it shouldn’t be a private member’s bill.
“It probably should be a government bill with governments behind it after consultation with all the stakeholders to see how we’re able to move this forward,” he stated.
But the president further indicated the need for the country’s values to be taught in schools.
“It leads us back to the discussion we had that if we’re teaching our values in school, we won’t need to pass a bill to enforce our family values and that’s why I think more than even the family values bill, it’s us agreeing on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they are growing up, so that we don’t need to legislate it and so we’ll see how all this goes. So I’m looking forward to this review conference to come to some consensus on some of these issues.”

Afenyo-Markin’s conduct at vetting of Mahama’s ministers ignites conversations on social media
Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament
The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, appears to be gradually finding his footing and carving out a role for himself as a provocative figure, effectively carrying out his duties as an opposition leader.
During the Appointment Committee’s ministerial vetting of President John Dramani Mahama’s nominees for the Ministry of Finance, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and the Ministry of Energy, Afenyo-Markin took the spotlight with his frequent interjections and tendency to find fault.
One of the key moments during the vetting was when the lawmaker was cautioned by the chairman of the committee after he used the platform to effectively hold a press conference and voice his side’s grievances regarding President Mahama’s ministerial nominations.
Additionally, he led his caucus members on the committee in staging a brief walkout due to reported disagreements with the chairman. They later returned for the continuation of the vetting.
His behavior appears to have sparked mixed reactions on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).
Netizens have shared divided opinions about the Minority Leader’s role, with some critics strongly disapproving of his behavior during his tenure, both in Parliament—where he has kept the Majority on their toes—and at the ministerial vetting.
Critics have expressed concern, suggesting that the lawmaker may have deliberately displayed such behavior in an attempt to frustrate the National Democratic Congress caucus on the Appointments Committee.
They argue that his behavior was unnecessary, warning that his actions could potentially harm the NPP and have a negative impact.
On the other hand, some critics have praised Afenyo-Markin, describing his actions as a demonstration of him effectively performing his duties. Some believe he is well-suited to lead the opposition side in Parliament, given how he managed to be provocative during the ministerial vetting.

I think Afenyo Markin’s tactic in this Parliament is to be disruptive. Very disrespectful. Perhaps, he thinks he’s doing it to please his supporters but he’s become downright irritating.

‘Dumsor’: My claim that we had 5 hours of fuel was true
John Jinapor, Minister of Energy-designate
The Minister for Energy-designate, John Jinapor has defended his claim that Ghana had 5 hours’ worth of fuel left during the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama.
He was questioned when he appeared before the Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, about the validity of his claim when there seemed to have been more fuel than he reported.
Jinapor insisted that his facts were correct, adding that was the situation at hand.
He said, “There is nothing to reconcile. I was specific. I said we have 5 hours of HFO, and it’s true, we had 5 hours of HFO. I said we had zero hours of DFO for Sunon Asogli, and it’s true, but I don’t develop the headlines. I don’t write the stories; the recording is there, and if there is any problem with gas supply, we are going to lose 370 megawatts in 5 hours’ time, which will lead to load shedding, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s a fact.”
Following the broadcast, President Mahama arranged an emergency meeting on his first day of work to address the looming power crisis and find a solution.
He, however, assured that there would be no load shedding.
