Many parents might be great at intermittently calling their wards to check up on them, but the same cannot be said for visits. In both cases, many fail to delve into their academics to determine whether they are doing well or not.
Well, a new Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology study has shed light on the pivotal role of parental involvement in enhancing the academic performance of university students in Ghana, with evidence from KNUST.
The research published in Cogent Education used a sample of 613 students to examine how parental involvement in the form of campus visits, regular calls, and words of encouragement from parents contribute to students’ academic performance (measured by their cumulative weighted averages).
The findings were striking: generally, parental involvement positively influenced students’ academic performance.
Specifically, parents visiting their wards on campus improved academic performance by 0.005, while regular phone calls boosted performance by 0.046.
The researchers again found that, encouragement had the greatest impact, improving performance by 0.061.
“These impacts, though seemingly small, highlight the importance of parental support and involvement in a university setting,” Dr Samuel Tawiah Baidoo at the Department of Economics said.
Interestingly, the study also uncovered other factors affecting academic performance.
For instance, it was found that younger students tend to perform better academically. It was further revealed that students who were part of groups or associations (such as academic and religious) exhibited improved academic performance, emphasizing the importance of peer interactions and community involvement.
The research underscores the importance of parents maintaining an active role in their children’s academic journey, even at the tertiary level. By visiting, checking in regularly through calls, and offering encouragement, parents can play a crucial role in ensuring their wards thrive academically.
“This study offers a compelling reminder that parental involvement doesn’t end after high school graduation. Instead, it continues to shape and support students as they navigate the demands of university life, demonstrating that success is truly a family effort,” Dr Baidoo advised.
Other authors in this study are: Dr Paul Kwasi Kumah, Department of Sociology and Social Work, and Prof. Hadrat Yusif, Department of Economics.

As someone who has observed and reflected on Ghana’s political sphere over the years, I’ve come to a realisation: our politics often revolves around two types of actors—those who excel at winning power and those who know how to use it effectively.
This disconnect has held us back as a nation, and it’s time we address it head-on.
Those Who Win Power
I’ve seen firsthand how some people are masters at winning political power. These strategists are skilled at mobilising support, often through grassroots campaigns that resonate with the masses or through powerful rhetoric that ignites passion.
An example is the impressive campaign machinery of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 elections, which leveraged technology, media, and grassroots mobilisation to secure a resounding victory for President Nana Akufo-Addo.
They command influence, their charisma drawing people to their vision. They know how to build alliances to navigate the electoral landscape with precision.
But here’s the problem: while they are experts at securing power, many of them lack the administrative skills or long-term vision needed to translate that power into meaningful governance.
For instance, after winning power, the inability to deliver on key promises, such as the “One District, One Factory” initiative, shows how the execution of policies often lags behind campaign rhetoric.
Those Who Use Power Effectively
On the other side of the equation are the visionaries and technocrats who know about governance and institution-building. These are the individuals I admire—the ones who roll up their sleeves and work to address the pressing challenges of our nation.
One example is Kwame Nkrumah’s administration, which, despite its flaws, focused heavily on institution-building and infrastructure development. His vision for industrialisation led to projects like the Akosombo Dam and Tema Industrial Complex, which laid the foundation for harnessing Ghana’s economic potential.
They are strategic policymakers, crafting solutions for unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and economic instability. They are skilled administrators, ensuring systems function efficiently for the benefit of the people. I call them consensus builders. They have a unique ability to unite diverse groups to achieve shared goals.
But here’s the sad reality: these individuals are often sidelined. Political dynamics in Ghana prioritise loyalty over competence. Unfortunately, this has left our nation stuck in a cycle of mediocrity.
The Culture of Entitlement
One of the most troubling aspects of our political landscape is the entitlement that has taken root. I’ve encountered many individuals who believe their role in securing political victories automatically qualifies them for positions of influence—even when they lack the skills to deliver results.
For example, during the Fourth Republic, several appointments across administrations have been criticised for rewarding political loyalty rather than competence. A glaring case is the nepotism accusations against the NDC and NPP governments, where close relatives or allies were given significant roles, regardless of their qualifications.
This entitlement often overshadows the broader national interest. Instead of appointing people based on merit, appointments are made to reward loyalty. The consequences are devastating. Mediocrity and inefficiency dominate, progress stalled, and our nation’s potential remains unrealised.
I remember a conversation I had with a friend about this. We discussed how some individuals in past administrations were placed in key positions they were wholly unprepared for. The results were predictable—policies were poorly implemented, projects stagnated, and the public lost faith in governance.
The Urgent Need for Co-Existence
For Ghana to thrive, we need to bridge the gap between those who win power and those who know how to use it effectively. These two groups must work together in a way that fosters:
Inclusive Leadership: Combining political tact with administrative excellence.
Accountability and Efficiency: Preventing power misuse while driving progress.
Unified Vision: Aligning political strategies with national development goals.
This co-existence is not just desirable but essential if we are to move forward as a nation.
The Role of Power Brokers and Party Loyalists
In Ghana, power brokers and party loyalists wield significant influence. They are the engine behind electoral victories, shaping public opinion and maintaining party cohesion. However, their responsibility doesn’t end with elections.
If we want effective governance, these influential figures must step up and support leadership decisions that serve the nation’s best interests. For President John Dramani Mahama to lead effectively, power brokers and party loyalists must:
Trust Leadership Decisions: Allow him the autonomy to appoint competent individuals to key positions.
Prioritize National Interests: Advocate for merit-based appointments that bring expertise, innovation, and vision to governance.
Unite Behind the Vision: Foster collaboration within the party and government to create an enabling environment for success.
A strong example of this collaborative potential was seen in the first term of the late President John Atta Mills, where a mix of technocrats and loyalists worked together on policies like the Single Spine Salary Structure, which, despite its challenges, aimed to address public sector pay disparities.
Competent Appointments: A Path to Progress
The success of any administration depends on the quality of its personnel. I strongly believe President Mahama must have the freedom to appoint individuals who:
Possess Expertise: Professionals with the skills and experience to tackle Ghana’s challenges.
Share His Vision: Leaders aligned with goals of national unity, economic stability, and sustainable development.
Drive Innovation: Solutions-oriented thinkers capable of addressing complex issues with creativity and pragmatism.
With the right people in place, Ghana’s institutions will grow stronger, policies will be implemented effectively, and public trust in governance will deepen.
A Call to Action for Ghana
Ghana faces significant challenges, including economic instability, youth unemployment, and underdeveloped infrastructure. These problems require a united approach where power brokers, party loyalists, and the administration collaborate for the nation’s progress.
This is a pivotal moment in our history. Power brokers and party loyalists must prioritise long-term national success over short-term political gains. By granting Mahama the freedom to assemble a competent and visionary team, we can build on the foundation laid by President Nkrumah for sustainable development, social stability, and a prosperous future.
Let’s champion a leadership approach that values competence, inclusivity, and collective progress. Ghana’s future depends on aligning those who win power with those who use it effectively.
We cannot afford to let entitlement and mediocrity hold us back any longer. I call on all Ghanaians to prioritise expertise and national interest. Let’s pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous Ghana. It’s time to give Mahama the chance to set Ghana right.

George Opare-Addo, the Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Employment, has openly acknowledged his membership in Freemasonry, a global fraternal organization.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 22, 2025, Opare-Addo addressed questions about his affiliation, affirming the values and principles he has embraced through the organization.
“Yes, I’m a Freemason,” he stated candidly.
When asked whom he places his trust in during difficulties and dangers, he responded, “The grand architect of the universe,” a phrase commonly associated with Freemasonry’s spiritual philosophy.
His disclosure prompted a brief exchange among committee members, with some seeking clarity on how his association with Freemasonry might influence his public service.
The admission has sparked mixed reactions. While some have lauded his transparency, others have raised concerns about the potential implications of his affiliation.
Despite the varied responses, Opare-Addo remains focused on his goals, reaffirming his commitment to youth empowerment and advancing Ghana’s development agenda as he awaits confirmation for the ministerial role.
Another video has emerged from the movie audition where veteran Nollywood actress, Ngozi Ezeonu, scolded two upcoming actresses for not wearing bra.
Naija News reports that the video taken from a different angle captured Ngozi leaving her seat while scolding the young ladies.
As the thespian questioned them if their choice of outfit could be worn to job a interview, the camera panned towards others waiting to be auditioned, showing that they were all casually dressed.
Former Majority Leader and former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed concerns about the implications of Mahama Ayariga’s appointment as Majority Leader in Parliament.
Speaking during an interview on Kumasi-based Ashh FM, he questioned Ayariga’s exclusion from the cabinet, highlighting the potential challenges it poses to the role’s effectiveness.
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has assured the newly-appointed Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, of his support and collaboration to advance the course of democracy in the country.
Speaking on the Floor of Parliament on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after Ayariga was officially appointed, Afenyo-Markin assured the new leaders in Parliament of his continued support.
“I want to congratulate the new team one more time and assure them that our side will treat them with respect. We will work together, beautify democracy, and assure the nation that although it is NDC and NPP, it is about systems and structures,” he stated.
To the incoming team led by Mahama Ayariga, Afenyo-Markin said, “We served together in the ECOWAS Parliament, and you were very supportive. You earned respect in the sub-region. In fact, Hon Ayariga, there is something I learnt from you, and I want to share, ‘You don’t mind how long it takes to negotiate to bring peace,’ and that has earned you a great deal of respect.
“I believe that even as Majority Leader, you will not assume you have the numbers; you will continue with that skill. As a government leader, if you try to introduce more debates, government business will suffer.”
The Majority Caucus in Parliament has announced a major reshuffle in its leadership, following Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s recent elevation as the Minister of Finance.
Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament of Bawku Central, has stepped into the role of Majority Leader, taking over from Dr. Forson.
Assisting him will be Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, the Member of Parliament of Cape Coast South, who has been appointed as the Deputy Majority Leader.
The position of Majority Chief Whip has been filled by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament of South Dayi, who replaces Kwame Governs Agbodza, Member of Parliament of Adaklu, in this critical role.
Additionally, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, representing the Ada Constituency, has been named the First Deputy Whip. Richard Acheampong, Member of Parliament of Bia East, rounds up the new leadership team as the Second Deputy Majority Whip.

Media personality, Adwoa Asuama, popularly known as GH Mouthpiece, has detailed some ordeals she went through in a church she once attended.
In an interview on Accra FM, on January 23, 2025, GH Mouthpiece noted that there is no benefit in going to church, and that some churches in the country are only there to make business.
“I don’t see the need in going to church. There is no benefit in going to church because the church building is you; the human being… When God says you are the building, it doesn’t mean a structure where people go and pray. Lately, a lot of churches in the country are where people go and trade. If you go to some churches, that is where people will be selling anointing oils, stickers, and many others, and it looks like a market,” she said.
GH Mouthpiece further shared her experience of how she was denied by a church she once attended because of her financial status.
“I stopped going to church because of an experience I had. I went to a church and if I had not stopped, I would have become a sinner. Could you imagine I was rejected in a church because I didn’t have money? I was punished for something I didn’t do. After that, I promised not to go to church again. I was living in pain, instead of harmony.
“During a wedding ceremony, I worked as an usher and someone misplaced her belongings. I was mishandled because I was blamed. I cried and up to now when I am talking about it. There is also favouritism in these so-called churches,” she said.

Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Iddie Adams
Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Iddie Adams, has underscored the need to bring in more stakeholders on board to address funding challenges in the sports space.
The Buem Member of Parliament asserted that bringing in more stakeholders and regenerating love for sports will improve access to funding.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after he joined the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) elections held on January 23, 2025.
He opined that funding has been a challenge for the sporting industry, and it was about time the country got more stakeholders on board to address the challenge.
“We need to bring back the love, and I believe one of the challenging parts of our sports has been funding, so we must all sit down and have a discussion, and let’s see how we can sort this problem out, and if we can regenerate the love, many more people may be willing to also come on board to help us deal with the funding challenge,” he stated.

If you ask YouTuber and beauty founder Deepica Mutyala what she wants for her brand Live Tinted, she’ll tell you: she wants it to represent a “medium” makeup movement.
Live Tinted, founded in 2018, arrived on the scene as the heyday of full-coverage, artistry-focused makeup routines was coming to a close. Amid a backlash to larger-than-life personalities and scandals like James Charles, Jeffree Star and Tati Westbrook, customers gravitated to TikTok and the “That Girl” and “Clean Girl” simplistic beauty and wellness trends. Now, a kind-of homeostasis has emerged between the different makeup philosophies, and that’s where Live Tinted resides.
“There’s always going to be trends,” said Mutyala, who is also CEO of Live Tinted. “Out first slogan was ‘For every shade in between’ but it didn’t only represent people whose skin tone was in-between but also people who want some [makeup] coverage because they don’t have flawless skin but don’t want to layer too much on.”
It’s a narrative that has resonated with customers, retailers and investors. As of 2023, Live Tinted raised $15 million, including $10 million in a Series A, according to WWD. Furthermore, it’s now expanding nationally to all 1,400 Ulta Beauty stores nationwide after first selling online in 2021. The brand has sold over 3.5 million units and has experienced a 147% compound annual growth rate in retail sales over four years, according to Mutyala.
To promote its expansion at Ulta Beauty, Live Tinted debuted its first commercial on Monday, January 21, which will be advertised across streaming channels and paid and unpaid social media. In the 90-second commercial titled, “It Feels Good to Be Seen,” two girls play with makeup when one of them, a Black girl, realizes none of the makeup matches her skin tone. Flashing forward to the young girl as a woman, her daughter encourages her to go to Ulta Beauty with her and shop from Live Tinted where the mother’s friend from before also shops with her own daughter. The idea is that beauty is inclusive and communal, and can be a positive outlet for shared experiences.
The commercial is inspired by Mutyala’s own experiences. As a woman of color, Mutyala had a YouTube video of her go viral (it now has 11 million views) in 2015 when she demonstrated how to conceal dark under eye circles using red lipstick. While the use of red lipstick may seem a novel approach to a beauty issue, people of color have long had to innovate and be creative with products in order to find items that worked for them. So when it came to launching Live Tinted in 2018, Mutyala wanted to address this gap in the market.
“Live Tinted is a gift to my younger self as a South Asian girl growing up in Texas and not seeing a beauty brand created for me,” she said. “I never dreamt of creating a brand just for brown girls or just for people of color, but I did want to create a brand that had them at the center.”
The brand first launched exclusively at Ulta Beauty after participating in the retailer’s Sparked program to provide mentorship, retail support, tailored marketing support, and community-building to young independent beauty brands. Over 30 brands that have gone through the program have since begun selling products at Ulta Beauty.
“As the first South Asian-owned makeup brand at Ulta Beauty, Live Tinted has deeply resonated with our diverse community of beauty enthusiasts, especially through its inclusive ethos and versatile products,” said Jessica Phillips, vp of merchandising at Ulta Beauty via email. “While success can look different for each brand, there are shared commonalities that resonate most with our [customers], such as scalability, transparency, relatability, simplicity and results.”
Live Tinted’s commitment to “medium” beauty and in-between people is also taking place against the backdrop of another upheaval in the beauty industry. TikTok briefly went dark ahead of President Trump’s inauguration on January 20, but the executive order gave the Chinese-owned app a 75-day extension to comply with a law banning the app if it is not sold. Live Tinted has just under 100,000 TikTok followers, but this is less than half of its followers on Instagram at 263,000 or Mutyala’s own personal YouTube account at 331,000 subscribers. But TikTok had been on the 2025 growth roadmap for Live Tinted as a marketing channel and given the success other brands have experienced on TikTok Shop.
“You can’t be dependent on one channel across the board in any capacity, whether it’s social or a sales channel; you have to create a business that can withstand if something like [a ban] happens,” said Mutyala.
The Regional Minister-Designate for the Oti Region, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has expressed his commitment to using dialogue, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, to resolve the ongoing conflict in Nkwanta.
The renewed conflict, which erupted in Nkwanta on January 16, resulted in three fatalities and several injuries. Fear has gripped residents as violent clashes continued into Thursday night, with reports of sporadic gunfire by unidentified individuals.
Videos obtained by Citi News captured the sounds of loud gunshots and extensive property damage. Sources suggest the conflict is tribal, involving three indigenous groups: the Challa and the Adele on one side, and the Achodes on the other.
The violence has displaced approximately 200 people, forcing them to flee Nkwanta to nearby towns such as Pampawie, Ahamansu, and other locations within the Kadjebi District. Kadjebi, which borders the Nkwanta Municipality, has become a safe haven for those seeking refuge.
In response to the crisis, John Kwadwo Gyapong underscored the importance of dialogue as the primary tool for resolving the conflict.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee, he outlined his plans to engage key stakeholders and set up a committee dedicated to conflict resolution.
“When I am given the nod, I will consult my regional coordinating council, the security coordinating council, and again consult chiefs and stakeholders in Nkwanta first, and we will see how we are going to solve this issue,” he said.
Gyapong emphasized that resolving conflicts is a gradual process that requires consistent engagement. “Conflict is not an event, and a solution to the conflict is also not an event.
“We will dialogue with the stakeholders and the people who matter. We will establish a conflict resolution committee that will be attractive to all the players of the conflict,” he added.
Prominent legal academic and social commentator, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare (popularly known as Kweku Azar), has drawn attention to allegations that Fidelity Bank has seized $25 million belonging to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF). In a post on Facebook, Kweku Azar expressed concern over the matter and urged for transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds.
The alleged seizure has caused a stir among Ghanaians, with many calling for clarity on the circumstances surrounding the claim. “It’s being alleged that Fidelity Bank has seized $25 million belonging to MIIF. What’s going on?” Kweku Azar wrote, sparking widespread discussion on social media.
This allegation comes amidst growing concerns about the management of state resources and funds in Ghana. MIIF, an institution set up to manage the country’s mineral revenues and maximize investment returns, plays a crucial role in the nation’s economy. Any issues with its funds could have far-reaching implications for its operations and the national budget.
Kweku Azar’s post has ignited calls for the government, MIIF, and Fidelity Bank to provide immediate clarification. Many have emphasized the need for transparency to restore public confidence in financial institutions and state bodies.
Observers have noted that the absence of clear communication from the involved parties only fuels suspicion. “Why is there silence from MIIF and Fidelity Bank? If this allegation is false, let’s hear a categorical denial. If it’s true, Ghanaians deserve an explanation,” one social media user commented.
As this story unfolds, Ghanaians will be watching closely. This issue touches on broader concerns about financial management and institutional integrity in Ghana. Without prompt and transparent communication, the matter risks escalating into a national scandal.

Oti Regional Minister-designate, John Kwadwo Gyapong
The Oti Regional Minister-designate, John Kwadwo Gyapong, drew unexpected praises from the members of the Appointments Committee of Parliament and the audience during his vetting on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Kwadwo Gyapong, who was hoping to prove to the members of the committee that he is the right man for the job, successfully proved his ‘potency’ to the whole world.
The minister-designate, during his introductory remarks, proudly stated that he is a father of 10 children.
“From 1993 to 2001, I had the privilege to represent my constituency in Parliament, as the Member of Parliament of the Akan Constituency. Again, I had the privilege to represent my constituency from 2005 to 2009.
“I’m a married man with 10 kids, I’m also a businessman, an astute politician. As I speak to you, I’m the regional chairman of the NDC in the Oti Region,” he said.
The mention of the 10 children led to reactions from the MPs and the audience, who appeared to be in shock.
One man in the audience could be heard saying, “He is the man.”

Former Auditor General of Ghana, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for directing his appointees to declare their assets, promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
Domelevo however, noted that this requirement should have been fulfilled before they were sworn into office, as this would have demonstrated a stronger commitment to good governance.
Domelevo made these remarks in response to President Mahama’s directive during the swearing-in ceremony of six new ministers on January 22, 2025. The President tasked the appointees to declare their assets, emphasizing the need to strengthen public trust and ensure adherence to ethical standards.
Mr. Domelevo stressed the importance of asset declaration as a tool for promoting transparency and accountability.
He also called for a more robust approach to enforcing asset declaration laws in Ghana, urging government institutions, particularly the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), to ensure compliance and hold public officials accountable.
To further strengthen governance, Mr. Domelevo recommended that President Mahama institutionalize a policy mandating pre-swearing-in asset declarations for future appointments. This measure, he believes, can serve as a cornerstone in Ghana’s fight against corruption and set the tone for a more accountable government.

The Chamber of Cannabis Industry has urged government to invest in the cannabis industry as part of its policies to diversify the Ghana’s cash crops and generate revenue to support the economy.
The Chamber said Ghana had one of the best climate in the world to cultivate cannabis and that the country had the potential to generate about $1 billion dollars from the $50bn dollars global cannabis market.
Dr Mark Darko, Chief Executive Officer of Chamber of Cannabis Industry, made the call at the launch of the Chamber of Cannabis Training Centre and Sky Bridge Pharmaceuticals in Accra.
He said Ghana must leverage its cannabis resource for medicinal and industrial purpose following the passage of the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2023 that grants permission for the cultivation of cannabis for industrial purposes.
“One can make not less than $10,000 from just one hectare of cannabis. This is a $50bn industry. If Ghana is able to make at least $1 billion annually from cannabis, you can imagine what that can do for our country. Cannabis will reset Ghana’s economy,” he said.
Dr Darko said the medicinal cannabis sector was a cornerstone to the growth of the sector due its usefulness in chronic pain management, epilepsy treatments, among other benefits.
“The United States recorded over $11 billion in medicinal cannabis revenue in 2021, and that’s set to more than double by 2025. Europe, projected to be the largest medicinal cannabis market in the world, is expected to reach $45 billion within the next five years,” he said.
Dr Darko said the Chamber’s Training Centre with support from the Sky Bridge Pharmaceuticals would equip farmers and processors with the tools and techniques to cultivate and process cannabis and hemp sustainably.
He said the Centre would also foster research and innovation to develop products that cater to global markets as well promote ethical practices.
Dr Samuel Twumasi, Group CEO of Sky Bridge Group, said the company’s decision to invest in the cannabis sector, was intended to produce world-class cannabis-based medicines that met the highest global standards.
He appealed to the Government to expedite passage of fees and charges for the acquisition of licenses for the cultivation of cannabis to facilitate investments in the sector.
Cannabis, popularly known as marijuana, is a herbal medication made from plants in the Cannabis species that is used to treat a variety of symptoms and diseases, including cancer, chronic pain, and mental disorders.
According to Allied Market Research, the global cannabis market size was valued at $25.7 billion in 2021, and is projected to reach $148.9 billion by 2031.

Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has expressed frustration over what she describes as the government’s lack of support and investment in the creative arts industry.
In a discussion on ‘Onua Showtime’, she highlighted that musicians, just like other creatives, need financial support to promote their work.
Celestine Donkor pointed out that, due to the absence of support, they are forced to explore opportunities abroad, where they are better appreciated.
She made these statements while comparing how the Ghanaian government treats its creatives to how other countries support their creative industries.
“We want money, and the government can provide that. In Kenya, when artistes hold events, the government supports them with funds from the Ministry of Tourism. I’ve attended a concert in Canada, where the government also provides financial backing for creatives to organise their events. It’s the government’s responsibility to help us because we are taxpayers, and some of us even pay double taxes by working in both the formal and informal sectors.”
The gospel singer also called on the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts to thoroughly look into and recognise the value of creatives in the country.
“It’s time they recognise the value we bring and the contributions we make to the nation. We live in Ghana, but many of us are registered with copyright organizations in other countries that pay us. So why should we struggle here? Creatives are now finding opportunities abroad where their services are in demand,” she added.

President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is demanding an update on the investigation into the death of the late investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
The Association says it expects authorities to provide an update on the issue by March 2025.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the President of the Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, said, “If by the end of March 2025, we have not seen or heard a satisfactory reaction to our demand, we shall proceed to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice to seek resolution of this matter.”
“What is even more disheartening is the lackadaisical police investigations into the murder. You may recall the shocking disclosure made by the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, in February 2024 that his office had not received from the Police any docket fit for prosecution or action on the murder of Ahmed Suale. This was five years after the murder of the investigative journalist.
“Just last week, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly called A-Plus, publicly indicated that he had given information to the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding the suspected killers of Ahmed Suale.”
He went further to threaten that if the Police did not come public with investigations into the killing, he would be compelled to publish the name of the suspect he submitted to the Police.
“The comments made by A-Plus have raised many questions that cast doubt on the willingness of the Police to resolve this matter,” he said.
He also stated that the GJA is prepared to take Latif Iddrisu’s case, formerly of Multimedia, to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if no concrete action is taken by the Police by the end of March 2025.
“The Police claim they do not have or cannot find evidence for prosecution. They further claim the CCTV at the crime scene was faulty on that fateful day Latif was assaulted. The Police are saying since the crime has no expiry date, anytime or day they would find evidence, they would initiate prosecution. We shall proceed to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice to hear what they will also say on this case,” he added.

play videoDzifa Abla Gomashie, Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts
One of the highly anticipated vetting sessions, especially by stakeholders in the tourism and creative arts sector, was that of Dzifa Abla Gomashie, the Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
Nominated for a role that massively contributes to the country’s economy, all eyes were on her, keenly observing her intentions, articulation, and intellect.
Stakeholders were particularly focused on hearing solid points from Dzifa Gomashie, who has been selected to drive this critical sector.
Throughout her vetting, questions came from all angles, and her answers highlighted several key points that are worth noting.
For those who missed the session, here’s a breakdown of some of the most important points for the sector stakeholders:
Here are some key takeaways from Dzifa Gomashie’s vetting:
Review high hotel rates and expansion of facilities
Dzifa Gomashie acknowledged the concern over the high cost of hotel rates and emphasised her intention to address this issue.
She also expressed plans to facilitate further expansion of hotel facilities to attract more tourists, clients, and investors, thus preventing them from choosing other destinations.
“This is a very huge concern as far as hotel rates are concerned. Even with hotels that have franchises all over the world, ours tend to be very high as compared to them,” she added.
Improve infrastructure capacity in the tourism industry
Gomashie highlighted the need to improve infrastructure within the tourism industry to promote investment and growth.
“I agree that our infrastructure must meet the growing demands of both the world and our country. This is something that is visible to us all. I plan to engage with the Minister of Finance and work with anyone who has the expertise to engage the private sector in boosting infrastructure capacity. The lack of these facilities takes away potential revenue for the country,” she explained.
Review the overwhelming tax on hospitality businesses
Addressing the high taxes in the hospitality sector, Dzifa Gomashie called for collective engagement with the finance ministry and industry stakeholders to tackle this issue.
“Taxes have been the cry of the hospitality industry since way back when I used to MC their events. It is an issue that we must collectively deal with. I’ll be tagging along with the finance minister and lobbying him vigorously,” she stated.
Promote ecotourism
Dzifa Gomashie expressed commitment to working with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology and allied agencies to promote ecotourism in the country.
“It will be great to work with the ministry of environment, science and technology and also allied agencies to see how best we can do this thing,” she stated.
Advocate for increased government investment in the sector
Gomashie emphasised the need for more government investment in the tourism sector to ensure it operates at its full potential.
“This is an area where the government needs to focus more attention. I will push the agenda for increased investments so that we can tap into the sector’s full potential,” she said.
Collaborate with MCEs to identify promotable areas
She highlighted the importance of engaging with Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) to identify and promote unique areas within their regions.
“When I met with Julius Debrah, who met with the MCEs at GIMPA, I stressed the importance of them bringing forward areas that need to be promoted. I’ll be championing this effort,” Gomashie said.
Advocate for road improvements leading to tourist destinations
One of her key promises was to push for the improvement of roads leading to tourist destinations to boost accessibility and increase visitor numbers.
“I will be actively pushing for the fixing of roads leading to these sites, as improved infrastructure will encourage more visits, benefiting everyone involved. I’ll lobby hard for this, just as I did when I served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts,” she affirmed.
Veteran football administrator Fred Pappoe has emphasized the importance of a management committee for the Black Stars.
In an interview with Pure FM, he highlighted that the committee is essential because it is responsible for the organization, planning, travel, accommodation, logistics, counselling, and serving as a liaison between the team, the GFA, and the sports ministry to a large extent.
He noted that many people doubt the relevance of the Black Stars management committee due to the underperformance of other committees.
“Take a deep look at the functions of a well-functioning management committee, and you will realize that they are absolutely crucial to the running of our national team and the success of our game.”
“I think people tend to have doubts when they look at some committees that are not very functional or are not performing well.”
He went on to list the duties of the management committee before stressing the importance of committed individuals serving on such committees.
“I believe the duties of the management committee include organizing and planning, handling travel, accommodation, logistics, and counseling, acting as an effective support system for the players and coaching staff, and serving as a strong link between the team, the GFA, and the ministry to some extent. So if we are serious, we need committed people to take on these responsibilities.”
Fred Pappoe’s explanation of the role of the management committee comes in response to the appointment of a new Black Stars management committee in 2025.
The appointees include Dr. Randy Abbey as the committee chairman, Stephen Appiah as the vice chairman, and members Samuel Aboabire, Richard Nsenkyire, and Moses Armah.
Sudanese nationals sit outside the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) headquarters
South Sudanese authorities have suspended access to social media platforms for a minimum of 30 days after videos depicting the alleged killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan’s El Gezira state triggered riots and deadly revenge attacks.
The block was to be implemented at midnight on Wednesday, Napoleon Adok, director general of the National Communications Authority, wrote in a letter dated Wednesday to internet service providers.
“This is culminating from the recent upheaval in Sudan, that has exposed the South Sudanese population to unprecedented levels of extreme violence through social media posts,” Adok wrote in the letter seen by Reuters.
Customers of mobile operators MTN South Sudan and Zain would not be able to access Facebook, TikTok and other platforms for a maximum period of 90 days, the companies said in statements issued on Wednesday.
A Reuters reporter in Juba was unable to access Facebook or TikTok. At least 16 Sudanese nationals were killed last week when riots erupted in South Sudan’s capital Juba and elsewhere in the country.
Youths in several cities looted and vandalized shops owned by Sudanese nationals and burned several homes, police said, in retaliation for what they believed was the involvement of Sudan’s military and allied groups in the killings in El Gezira.
The Sudanese army has condemned what it called “individual violations” in El Gezira.
“The effect is a bit huge because as an artist, I depend so much on social media,” said Isaac Anthony Lumori, also known as Mc Lumoex, a popular South Sudanese musician and founder of a comedy show.
“My message to the government is to seek an amicable way of solving this issue, especially engaging the government of Sudan to make sure that (their) army does not misbehave to the extent of taking human life,” he told Reuters.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), internal unrest continues to simmer, with grassroots supporters demanding a leadership shakeup.
This growing discontent comes even before the party’s investigative committee, led by Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, begins to assess what led to the NPP’s underwhelming performance in the 2024 elections.
While the committee is yet to start its work, disgruntled foot soldiers are already calling for the resignation of key national executives and pushing for fresh faces to lead the party moving forward.
Amid these calls for change, the race for the crucial role of General Secretary is heating up. Party insiders suggest that several prominent figures are eyeing the position, each hoping to restore the NPP’s fortunes after a deeply disappointing election result. Among the potential candidates, there are a mix of long-serving party members and fresh faces eager to shift the direction of the NPP.
Justin Kodua Frimpong, the current General Secretary, remains a key figure in the discussion. While Frimpong has been campaigning for another term, the challenges he faces are significant. Sources close to the party suggest that Frimpong’s strained relationship with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo could hinder his chances. Akufo-Addo’s administration has been blamed for the party’s loss, and Frimpong’s association with it could cost him support within the party. Some argue, however, that his distance from the former president might present an opportunity for the party to move past the past administration’s controversies, although winning over delegates may prove difficult.
Eugene Boakye Antwi, a former Member of Parliament for Subin, has emerged as another strong contender. Antwi, who has been outspoken about the party’s leadership failings, insists that the NPP’s defeat in 2024 is a direct result of a disconnect between the party’s leadership and its base. He believes the time is ripe for a leadership change and is positioning himself as a reformist candidate who can rebuild the party’s credibility. His candidacy, however, could create a split within the party, as his base of support might overlap with Frimpong’s, opening the door for another candidate to step forward.
George Mireku Duker, a former Deputy Minister and MP for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, is another name being floated as a potential General Secretary candidate. Duker has been working behind the scenes, engaging party elders in the Western Region and hinting at his intention to run. While he has remained tight-lipped about his plans, his supporters believe he could offer the NPP the leadership it needs to bounce back. Duker’s candidacy adds a new dimension to the race, as the party looks to bring in fresh leadership that is disconnected from the fallout of the past election cycle.
Meanwhile, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister and MP for Tema East, is also preparing for a comeback. Glover, who narrowly lost a bid for the National Organiser position to Henry Nana Boakye, has reportedly set his sights on the General Secretary role. His extensive experience in party organization and grassroots mobilization could make him a strong contender, but there are questions about why he isn’t challenging Boakye for the National Organiser position again, particularly given the dissatisfaction with Boakye’s role in the 2024 elections.
As the NPP braces for its congress, the battle for leadership will be one of the party’s defining moments. With the grassroots pushing for change, the outcome of this contest could set the tone for the party’s future trajectory. With several strong candidates vying for the position of General Secretary, the NPP is facing a critical decision on who will steer the party out of its current crisis and back to its previous position of power. The next few weeks will be crucial as the party moves towards an uncertain future.
Accra, Jan 23, GNA – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially unveiled its leadership for the Ninth Parliament, with Mr Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, as the Majority Leader.
The Deputy Majority Leader is Mr Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, NDC MP for Cape Coast South and Mr Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, NDC MP for South Dayi, is the Majority Chief Whip.
Madam Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, NDC MP for Ada, is the First Deputy Majority Whip, while Mr Richard Acheampong, NDC MP for Dormaa East, is the Second Deputy Majority Whip.
This marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s political landscape.
A statement signed by Mr Fiifi Fiavi Kwettey, the General Secretary of the Party and issued to Mr Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament on Thursday said the appointments followed the NDC’s selection process, which involved consultations with the party’s Majority Caucus.
Mr Ayariga, a seasoned politician with extensive experience in governance, is expected to bring his expertise to bear in leading the NDC Caucus and Government business to ensure success in Ghana’s democratic process.
“…The party has requested that the necessary steps be taken to formalise these appointments, in line with established parliamentary procedures,” the statement said.
The NDC’s leadership appointments are seen as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s presence in Parliament and advance its legislative agenda.
As the Majority Leader, Ayariga will play a crucial role in coordinating with the NDC’s parliamentary business and ensuring the passage of key legislation.
In his acceptance statement, Mr Ayariga said: “I am honoured to have been chosen by my party to lead the NDC caucus in the 9th Parliament.”
“I assure the people of Ghana that we will rigorously pursue the agenda to reset Ghana, while striving for inclusivity, consensus building, and upholding the principles of probity and accountability.”
The Ghana Health Service in the Agona West District of the Central Region is dealing with some 214 suspected cases of cholera in the Municipality.
Officials from the Ghana Health Service say a total of 11 cases have been confirmed so far putting authorities on high alert.
The Directorate says measures have been put in place as it suspects a total of 214 cases.
Municipal Health Director for Agona West Bertha Arthur is urging residents to stay alert while it works to deal with the outbreak.
The Directorate again wants the public to practice a high level of hygiene and report early symptoms to a health facility for onward action.
“As we speak we have suspected 214 cases. Suspected means that some came with dehydration, diarrhoea and some kind of vomiting. We also have confirmed 11 cases. It means that out of all the samples we sent to the lab it certified that 11 of them have cholera.
“In an outbreak condition if a district suspects or confirms an outbreak above a certain number it means that we have reached an emergency situation,” Bertha Arthur Municipal Director of Health for Agona West said in an interview with Citi News.
“It is time for all hands on deck to deal with the menace. We have intensified education to sensitize people about the outbreak. We are also dealing with all stakeholders to save the situation. But we also want to tell the public to report as early as possible the hospital when they see symptoms of cholera,” the Municipal Director said.
Mahama Ayariga replaces Ato Forson as Majority Leader
During the vetting of John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Regional Minister-Designate for the Oti Region, on January 23, 2025, an unusual question raised by a member of the appointment committee sparked an intriguing conversation about leadership, age, and political contribution.
The committee member, seemingly concerned about Gyapong’s age and extensive career, asked: “At 74 years old and a father of ten, why have you held so many influential positions, including serving as a three-time parliamentarian, regional chairman for the NDC in both the Oti and Volta regions, and as constituency chairman?

The Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has received a total of 283 applications for the position of Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) for 18 assemblies of the Volta Region.
Initially, 287 applied for the positions, but four of them had written to the Regional office of the party in Ho, indicating their decision to withdraw from the race, leaving 283 contestants.
The Acting Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, Bright Kwashie Ege, who made this known to the Ghanaian Times in Ho on Monday, January 20 said the number of applicants for the MDCEs position in the region was highest since the inception of the fourth republic.
He announced that out of the 287 applicants, North Tongu District recorded the highest number of 40 applicants and the Akatsi-North District recorded the lowest of four applicants.
Ege indicated that 40 applications were women, adding that though the number of women contesting to become MDCEs was low, it was an improvement over the past when women showed no or little interest in such positions.
According to him, the high number of applications of people willing to serve as MDCEs showed the attractiveness of the NDC and their readiness to contribute to national development.
Mr Ege gave the assurance that “the party had put in place mechanisms to effectively manage the high number of applicants in order not to allow the high number of applicants to degenerate into disaffection for the party.”
He said that vetting of the 263 applicants was expected to start from January 21, 2025.

Ghana is taking bold steps to improve food security and sustainability by bringing together agritech, agribusiness, and collaborative partnerships. With digital training and support from the Netherlands Trust Fund V (NTF V) Ghana Tech project, initiatives like the Horticulture Business Platform (HBP) and the Agricultural Innovation for Africa (AIA) Conference are reshaping agriculture.
The country has reduced hunger and malnutrition, but obstacles remain. About 40% of the population works in agriculture, which is highly vulnerable to climate change, limited infrastructure, and post-harvest losses.
Ghana imports staples like rice, tomatoes, and onions, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen local production. Adding to the challenge, post-harvest losses account for up to 30% of what’s grown. To turn things around, innovative solutions are needed – along with smart policy changes, and community-driven efforts.
1 million people in Ghana are food insecure
1 million children under 5 are chronically malnourished
The role of agritech
Agriculture is the backbone of Ghana’s economy, but faces challenges like limited market access, inefficient supply chains, and a shrinking workforce. Agritech can address these issues.
The Horticulture Business Platform (HBP) gathers farmers, small businesses, input suppliers, and farmer-based groups, all working toward shared goals. By working with key organizations, HBP promotes sustainable growth in horticulture, offering its members opportunities to access local and global markets, benefit from training programmes, and engage in trade fairs.
Led by Barnabas Apom of the GNBCC, the HBP is a prime example of how targeted projects can drive growth. Initially established to network Dutch-Ghanaian businesses, GNBCC’s scope has evolved to address critical issues in horticulture and cocoa.
One of the HBP’s hallmark projects is ‘Farm-to-Market,’ which connects farmers with buyers through pre-negotiated agreements. Leveraging technology from ITC’s NTF V Tech cohort, farmers track their production and build the confidence of financial institutions to fund agricultural ventures.
“Technology enables us to reach larger communities quickly, improving efficiency and encouraging youth participation in food safety and security.” Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, Director of the Kosmos Innovation Centre (KIC), KIC supports young entrepreneurs and small businesses through training, mentorship, and seed funding
Building collaborative networks
Partnerships are at the heart of these successes. The NTF V support brings together agribusinesses, technology companies, investors, and government agencies to find sustainable solutions. One example is the Agricultural Innovation for Africa Conference (AIA), co-hosted by KIC. At the 2024 event, over 1,500 farmers, tech innovators, and policymakers explored opportunities to work together.
At the conference’s ‘deal room,’ a matchmaking hub connected agribusinesses with financial institutions, tech companies and investors. The AIA not only opened doors for funding but also helped shape government policies to better support small businesses in agriculture. Attendees left with meaningful connections, valuable resources, and ways to grow their businesses.
Empowering youth and women
Youth engagement and gender equality are central to Ghana’s agricultural transformation. The country’s farmers on average are now over 50, so it’s vital to draw younger generations into the sector. Programmes like the Young Farmers Business Academy at KIC focus on regenerative agriculture and climate-smart practices to train young people so they can drive a sustainable agricultural revolution.
Despite substantial achievements, Apom said many farmers still lack access to smartphones and the digital skills needed to use advanced tools. ‘Closing this gap calls for practical, tailored solutions that address the specific needs and challenges of rural farmers.’
To boost local production, the HBP is rolling out pilot programmes to simplify access for market women to buy local crops. This not only helps reduce post-harvest losses but also strengthens local food systems
A sustainable future
‘Developing digital solutions for farmers, even in remote areas, has been a remarkable achievement,’ said Bram van Opijnen, First Secretary at the Dutch Embassy in Ghana. ‘It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation.’
Ghana’s commitment to achieving food security and sustainability offers a blueprint for other nations grappling with similar challenges. Technology, cooperation, and inclusivity are reshaping the country’s agricultural landscape. ‘As these programmes grow and adapt, they hold the promise of a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future, not only for Ghana but for communities worldwide,’ Gyan-Kesse said.

The newly appointed Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has pledged to exercise the ruling party’s strong parliamentary majority with responsibility and inclusiveness.
Mr. Ayariga, who replaced Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, underscored the importance of building consensus and promoting unity within Parliament.
Speaking during his acceptance in Parliament on Thursday, he echoed President John Dramani Mahama’s assurance that the majority’s substantial numbers would not be used to dominate or silence opposition voices.
“As President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized, we will not abuse our overwhelming majority,” Ayariga stated.
According to him, his focus would be on fostering inclusivity, encouraging dialogue, and upholding the core values of probity and accountability in pursuit of the country’s collective aspirations.
Mr. Ayariga also reiterated his commitment to strengthening democracy, promoting national unity, and ensuring balanced development across the country.
He expressed confidence that through constructive conversation and mutual respect, Parliament would overcome any hurdles and work toward achieving the nation’s shared vision.
“The road ahead will not be without challenges, but I am confident that, together, we can overcome them and deliver on the hopes and dreams of our people,” he stated.
The reshuffle was necessitated by the appointment of the Majority Leader and his team members as Ministers of State.
While Mr. Ayariga has taken over from Dr. Ato Forson as Majority Leader, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, the MP for Cape Coast South, succeeded Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah as Deputy Majority Leader.
Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, took over as Majority Chief Whip, replacing Governs Agbodza.
Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, the MP for Ada, will now serve as First Deputy Whip, taking over from Ahmed Ibrahim, while Richard Acheampong, MP for Bia East, assumes the role of Second Deputy Majority Whip.

The Supreme Court has indefinitely adjourned the suit filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenging a High Court decision on the collation of parliamentary election results in four constituencies.
The constituencies in question are Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South, and Ablekuma North.
When the case was called in court today, January 23, 2025, it emerged that the NDC had failed to serve the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates, who are parties to the case.
The issue of non-service was raised by NPP Director of Legal Affairs and lawyer in the case, Gary Nimako.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Pwamang explained that the application could not proceed due to the failure to serve notice to the interested parties. The court held that proper service must be completed before the matter could be heard.
Counsel for the applicants, Gideon Abotsi, proposed that service be effected through the interested parties’ lawyer, who had already announced himself as their counsel of record. However, Justice Pwamang disagreed, stating that service could not be made on the lawyer, leaving the matter unresolved and resulting in the indefinite adjournment of the case.
The panel hearing the case included Justices Pwamang, Mensah-Bonsu, Gaewu, Adjei-Frimpong, and Kwofie.
The apex court, therefore, adjourned the case (indefinitely) to allow the applicants to serve the respondents properly.
Earlier, the High Court, presided over by Justice Forson Baah Agyapong on Saturday, January 4, 2025, granted a mandamus application filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The ruling instructed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of results for Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Techiman South, and Ablekuma North constituencies and announce the winners.
In compliance with the ruling, the EC has since re-collated the results for three constituencies—Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, and Techiman South—leaving Ablekuma North outstanding.
The NDC, however, has petitioned the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the High Court’s decision.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority caucus in Parliament has elected a new leadership team to lead the party and drive the government’s legislative priorities in the House.
This change comes in the wake of several key appointments by President John Mahama in his administration by assigning some Majority MPs to critical ministerial roles.
The former Majority Leader and economist, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has been elevated to the role of Minister for Finance, a move widely regarded as pivotal for steering Ghana’s economic recovery.
To fill his shoes, the caucus has turned to Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central. Mr Ayariga previously served in roles such as Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, as well as Minister of Information.
The reshuffle also sees Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle, transitioning from Deputy Majority Leader to Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
His successor, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, MP for Cape Coast South, previously served as a Deputy Finance Minister.
Meanwhile, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, has been appointed as the new Majority Chief Whip, succeeding Governs Kwame Agbodza, who has taken on the role of Minister for Roads and Highways.
Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, MP for Ada, has been named First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, and Richard Acheampong, MP for Bia East, will serve as the Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip.

John Dramani Mahama, in February last year, promised to put the economy back on a sound footing.
According to him, the lack of political will and leadership to undertake measures to forestall the worsening economic situation in Ghana were the reasons the country was plunged into crisis under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has pledged to initiate innovative policies to revive Ghana’s ailing economy for growth when elected as President in this year’s general election.
He said the recent crisis being confronted by the country was attributed to lack of political will and leadership to undertake measures to forestall the worsening economic situation here in Ghana.
The Ex-Ghanaian leader who is also the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was addressing chiefs and traditional leaders at the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs in Bolgatanga at the weekend, said the next NDC government would relieve Ghanaians from the nuisance taxes imposed on them by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The former President’s visit to the region forms part of his Building Ghana tour.
According to him, his proposal to implement a 24-hour economy to rejuvenate the economy and make life bearable to the ordinary citizen was as a result of broader consultations he had with pre-eminent stakeholders, and he would redeem his pledge in that direction to salvage the insurmountable economic woes, if voted into power at this year’s general elections.
“We in the NDC always take the trouble to go round the country and interact with the people of all walks of life to find out what they want the NDC to do if they win political power. And we have adopted that practice, and the people themselves tell us their challenges so we capture them in our manifesto,” former President Mahama indicated.
Mr Mahama criticised the government for mismanaging the economy, alleging that the country was going through tougher times because of the excessive borrowing “and let no one tells you otherwise.”
He said the country’s economic crisis was self-inflicted because government in the last seven years had borrowed top the tune of $13.5 billion, saying all the monies went into consumption rather than production.
Former President Mahama said the economy was already incapacitated, and could not thrive under monstrous debts.
According to him, the government had turned deaf ears to calls from independent-minded personalities to cut expenditure to reduce the growing public debt.
“Government has decided to impose heavy taxes on the people to pay off its debts, and when you impose so many taxes on the people, the economy stops growing,” he explained, and urged Ghanaians to vote out the NPP during the upcoming general elections to save the economy from collapse.
The President for the Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief for the Chiana Traditional Area, Pe Detundini Adiali Ayagitam III, appealed to the NDC flagbearer to intervene to bring peace to Bawku, as two factions had been locked up in a chieftaincy dispute since November 2021.
The disturbances, he stated, had claimed hundreds of lives, adding that the crisis there had erupted into proportions beyond human imaginations.
In a related development, Mr Mahama paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of Bawku, Zug-Ran Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and made a clarion call to the two factions to allow peace prevail.

His arrival is expected to be pivotal in helping Legon Cities secure their top-flight status after a difficult first round.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bole/Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, has dismissed claims that he has been sidelined following the announcement of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial list, which did not feature his name.
The MP assured his constituents that he remains in close communication with the President and is focused on serving their interests.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, January 22, Mr. Sulemana addressed concerns that emerged after some disturbances broke out in his constituency.
These were reportedly linked to dissatisfaction over his absence from the President’s ministerial appointments.
He emphasised that his relationship with President Mahama remains strong.
“I’ve not been sidelined, and I am closely in touch with President Mahama,” he stated. Mr. Sulemana explained that the President’s decision to limit his cabinet to 60 ministers was a reflection of his commitment to a lean and efficient government.
He further highlighted that President Mahama’s roots in Bole provide a unique advantage for the constituency.
“The President promised to appoint 60 ministers, and he is a man coming from Bole. What do we need a minister for? We are looking for a minister or an appointment to bring development to our people. So if we have the President himself coming from the constituency, what will be a minister’s duty in this equation?” Mr. Sulemana asked.
The MP called for calm among his constituents and urged them to rally behind President Mahama’s leadership.
He reiterated that the President’s presence and influence would ensure development for Bole/Bamboi, even without a ministerial appointment from the area.
