Volta NDC youth condemn attack on party office, urges calm

0

Woe (VR), Jan 22, GNA – The Volta Regional Youth wing of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Ho Central Constituency office of the party.

Some youth believed to be members of the NDC Tuesday evening (January 21) broke into the party’s constituency office in Ho, brought out items including documents and furniture and set them ablaze at the office premises.

Mr Mathias Alagbo, popularly known as Kabila, Volta Regional Youth Organiser of the NDC, in a release on Wednesday, said they suspected that the Tuesday, January 21 incident had been carried out by disgruntled party members dissatisfied with the ongoing government appointment process being made by President John Dramani Mahama.

“In particular, the disgruntled members are said to be unhappy with the lack of any appointment from the constituency thus far by the President.

“We urge our supporters to remain calm and allow the appointment process to unfold without interference. Appointments are a continuous process, and we are confident that President Mahama acknowledges the Volta Region’s significance to the NDC’s electoral success and will reward local Voltarians accordingly.

“We wish to caution those responsible for the attack and others contemplating similar actions to desist, as such behaviour is inconsistent with the party’s values and the way Voltarians resolve differences,” it concluded.

Akufo-Addo never rented any private jet for domestic trips

0

The former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has refuted claims that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo used private jets for domestic travel during his tenure.

Nitiwul’s remarks come in response to allegations made by the Majority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza who accused former President Akufo-Addo of renting private jets for his travels.

Speaking during a parliamentary debate on January 22, 2025, regarding President John Dramani Mahama’s use of his brother’s private jet, Nitiwul clarified that while the former president Akufo-Addo occasionally used private jets for international travel beyond West Africa, such instances were limited, citing Emirates as an example.

“I’m not here to do propaganda. I want to say that former President Akufo-Addo has travelled on numerous occasions in the Emirates. On some of the occasions, he went with Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, former minister for Road and Highways, you can verify from him.

“It’s on record. I’m aware former President Akufo-Addo has travelled to the UK with British Airways, and Qatar Airways on numerous occasions. I’m just giving this information to Parliament and the House, and for it to enter the Hansard that former President Akufo-Addo has travelled on commercial aircraft several times, not once.

“Former President Akufo-Addo never rented any private jet to travel within the country, outside West Africa, yes, but in the country no.”

He also refuted claims that the former President did not use the official presidential aircraft.

“Former President Akufo-Addo has been using it for the last 8 months ever since it was returned from France.”

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, defended the President’s use of a private jet owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for official trips to Senegal and The Gambia.

Responding to public criticism, Kwakye Ofosu clarified that the private jet has been available to President Mahama even before the 2024 general elections.

He emphasized that this arrangement incurs no cost to the Ghanaian taxpayer, as the jet was made available for the trips without charge.

Kwakye Ofosu also revealed that the official presidential aircraft is currently under review by the Communications Squadron, the Air Force unit responsible for its operation, hence the private jet use.

We must collectively deal with huge taxes in the tourism sector

Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie

The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has indicated that she will reduce taxes in the tourism sector when given the mandate to serve as a substantive minister.

During her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Abla Dzifa Gomashie noted that high taxes in the tourism sector are affecting the ministry.

She explained that for the industry to thrive, Ghanaians, both in the private and public sectors, should work together and deal with huge taxes.

“Taxes have been the cry of the hospitality industry from way back when I used to MC their events, and I was not even in the ministry as their deputy minister. It is an issue that we must collectively deal with. I overheard the Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, during his vetting saying he has studied the economy very well and has a fair idea of how he will help us as a country restructure it. So, I will tag along with him and I will lobby him vigorously,” she said.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie also noted that she will work assiduously to improve the infrastructure capacity in the hospitality sector.

“This is an unending discussion, especially where hotel rates are concerned. Even hotels that franchise in another country, ours tend to be very high comparatively. So, I agree with you about the lack of infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the world and country is there in our faces.

“Apart from engaging with the Minister of Finance, I think that everybody listening to me who can engage with the private sector both in and out of Ghana to ensure we improve our infrastructure capacity, you are welcome to engage with me. And if I get your nod, this is an issue we will deal with,” she added.

Dzifa Gomashie went before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, for her vetting, which will determine her confirmation as the substantive Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.

She was nominated for the position on January 16, 2025, in a statement signed by the Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

Having served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture under the Mahama administration from 2013 to 2017, Dzifa Gomashie is also a two-term Member of Parliament for the Ketu South Constituency, where she has championed development and community empowerment initiatives.

Ghana Tourism Authority CEO resigns, hands over leadership

0

Akwasi Agyeman (right) has stepped down as CEO of GTA Akwasi Agyeman (right) has stepped down as CEO of GTA

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman, has resigned from his position, marking the end of an era that saw significant growth and development in Ghana’s tourism sector.

During his tenure, which began in January 2017, Mr. Agyeman led the GTA through a remarkable recovery period, navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and emerging stronger than ever.

Under his leadership, international arrivals rebounded impressively, jumping from 355,108 in 2020 to 1,148,002 in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Domestic tourism also flourished, with visitor numbers increasing from 456,000 in 2017 to 1.4 million in 2023. Mr. Agyeman’s vision and strategic direction were instrumental in driving these successes.

Some notable achievements during his tenure include the rehabilitation of several tourist sites, such as Kintampo Waterfalls, the Kwahu Paragliding Site, Bunso Eco Park, Denkyira Kyekyewere Eco Park, Tano Boase Sacred Grove, the Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary.

The redevelopment of the Accra Tourist Information Center and historic sites such as the Nationalism Park, the Geese Park, Salaga Slave Market, Bonwire Kente Museum, and Pikworo Slavery Camp are also notable accomplishments.

Innovative campaigns like “The Year of Return” and “December in Ghana” also boosted tourism, making Ghana a major Christmas holiday destination.

Mr. Agyeman’s commitment to digital transformation and capacity building was evident in the launch of the National Tourism Destination Single Window Project and the “Visit Ghana” App.

He also oversaw the training of over 3,069 individuals in customer service, digital marketing, and tourism product knowledge through the Ghana CARES Obaatanpa Initiative.

Mr. Agyeman handed over the reins to Mr. Otto Langmane, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Mr. Ekow Sampson, Deputy CEO in charge of Operations.

Four possible reasons why President Mahama picked Kofi Adams over Nii Lante Vanderpuye as sports minister

0

Kofi Adams got the sports ministry job ahead of the heavily-tipped Nii Lante Vanderpuye Kofi Adams got the sports ministry job ahead of the heavily-tipped Nii Lante Vanderpuye

The anticipated clash between the Ghana Football Association and Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye will not take place, at least for now, as President Mahama has, against the expectations and predictions of many, nominated Kofi Adams as the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation.

Kofi Adams’ appointment, which came via a communique from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson to the President, indicated that the Buem MP will oversee the sector and ensure its development.

President John Dramani Mahama’s decision has sparked discussions across the country, with some questioning why Nii Lante Vanderpuye was passed over in favor of Kofi Adams.

GhanaWeb Sports presents four possible reasons behind this decision by John Mahama:

Regional Balance

The 1992 Constitution mandates the president of the country to ensure a ‘reasonable regional and gender balance’ in the appointment of ministers.

Beyond the constitutional requirement, the political interest matter comes into play, as the president must ensure he is seen as a ‘father’ for all. His appointments should, therefore, have a national outlook.

A careful look at the 42 ministerial appointments so far shows that the maximum any region got was four, which includes the Volta and Northern Regions. The Greater Accra Region, which Nii Lante Vanderpuye hails from, had three, and his appointment would have increased it to four.

Prior to Kofi Adams’ nomination, the Oti Region, which he hails from, had only one minister, the regional minister. Kofi Adams has thus become the only sectorial minister from the Oti Region in John Mahama’s government.

Parliamentary Requirement

President Mahama is obligated by the 1992 Constitution to appoint the majority of his ministers from Parliament. This is made even more complex by the number of NDC MPs in the ninth parliament, many of whom will be lobbying for positions.

Nii Lante’s exit from Parliament may have affected his chances, as the president had to meet the parliamentary percentage while taking into account regional and gender balance issues. As mentioned earlier, Kofi Adams is the MP for Buem Constituency in the ninth Parliament.

Satisfying the JJ Rawlings Block in NDC

Another key and strategic consideration in the appointment of Kofi Adams was his closeness to the founder of the National Democratic Congress.

The NDC likely has three internal factions; the Jerry John Rawlings, Atta Mills, and Mahama blocks. For the sake of unity and internal party politics, John Mahama is somehow obliged to try to satisfy each block with his appointments, and that may have swung things in favor of Kofi Adams.

Non-confrontational Leader at Sports Ministry

Another reason, which is purely speculative, is that, with the importance of the 2026 World Cup in mind, President John Dramani Mahama may want someone who can engage in dialogue and build a relationship with the Ghana Football Association to enhance Ghana’s qualification chances.

Akufo-Addo’s Statue Keeps Haunting Me -Man Confesses After Destroying It

0

A young man, who identified himself as Bongo during a street interview in Takoradi on January 21, 2025, admitted to being involved in the mob that vandalized the statue of former President Akufo-Addo. The visibly shaken individual, in his early thirties, expressed that he has been unable to find peace since participating in the incident just over a week prior. He clarified that while he did not initially bring the statue down, he contributed to its further destruction.

He reportedly stated, “When I arrived, the statue was already down, and I went over to damage it more, but now I cannot sleep. I see him (the statue) every time I close my eyes, and I regret my actions.”

When asked about the motivations behind his decision to destroy the statue, Mr. Bongo struggled to provide a rational explanation.

“It was fun to do it, and I felt proud to be among those who toppled it, but upon returning home, I was plagued by nightmares. It was distressing. Just picture a statue, like a human, blinking and laughing.”

As attempts were made to photograph him, he resisted, citing fears of intimidation and potential arrest.

“Massa, I have endured enough. Do you want the police to come after me? I simply seek peace. Akufo-Addo should forgive me,” he concluded before walking away.

The statue, a gift from the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council and funded through voluntary contributions from its members, faced significant backlash following the widespread sharing of its images on social media. Erected at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region, it was unveiled on November 6, 2024, and was completely destroyed by unknown individuals on January 13, 2025, an act that received mixed reactions from many Ghanaians.

‘I think the victory of the NDC is getting to their head so much’ – Dr Ekua Amoakoh

0

Dr. Ekua Amoakoh is a member of the communications team of the NPP Dr. Ekua Amoakoh is a member of the communications team of the NPP

A member of the communications team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, has expressed concerns about the actions of some National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, following their decisive victory in the December 7 presidential election.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, she pointed out that the NDC’s victory seems to be clouding their judgments, distorting the core principles of democracy.

“The NPP is the party that came about by truly democratic means. There was a time when we did not even have representation in Parliament, yet we continued to fulfill our duties as the opposition party.

“I don’t know; I think the victory of the NDC is getting to their head so much that they are forgetting the rules of engagement. In a democracy, you can’t tell us to keep quiet or accuse us of being a nuisance,” she stated.

Dr. Amoah further reiterated the NPP’s commitment to being a constructive opposition party.

“We are committed and determined to form a very constructive opposition party that will look out for the interests of the people of Ghana. That way, when we are in a position to form the government again, we can implement the policies — the beautiful policies — that we have outlined for the country’s development,” she noted.

Her comments follow remarks made by the Majority Leader in Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, who urged the Minority to exercise restraint and allow President John Dramani Mahama’s newly sworn-in government the peace and space to govern effectively.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament on January 21, 2025, Dr. Forson urged the opposition to focus on constructive engagements, rather than premature criticisms.

“The Mahama administration is barely two weeks old, yet it has already been inundated with unwarranted attacks from the Minority. I appeal to our colleagues on the other side to grant the government the necessary breathing space to steer the affairs of this country. Let us work together to build a better Ghana,” she stated.

Documentary on migration ‘Omo Ghana’ premieres in February

0

“Without knowing our history, we can never fully understand our present and future.”

Omo Ghana: Man for Chop is compelling documentary that will premiere at the Silverbird Cinemas on the 28th of February, 2025. As migration continues to impact global cultures, this film revisits a significant period in history by examining the 1983 wholesale expulsion of over one million Ghanaians from Nigeria.

Omo Ghana’s intimate and evocative narration reveals the heart-breaking personal stories of families torn apart at the Aflao border, as well as the deep emotional scars left by the forced expulsions. This tragic chapter provides a lens through which we further understand the current dynamics of migration, including its causes and repercussions.

At its core, Omo Ghana invites us to reflect on the fundamental question which is; What drives people to leave everything they know and seek new beginnings elsewhere? Whether driven by economic hardship, political instability, or the quest for a better life, migration is a deeply human phenomenon that transcends borders.

Migration, from the earliest human migrations to the present day, has been a constant force, shaping cultures, economies, and societies. Today, millions of individuals embark on journeys across the globe, seeking new opportunities, fleeing conflict, or pursuing dreams of a better life. Omo Ghana explores these motivations, showcasing the diverse experiences that unite us all in the shared pursuit of survival, dignity, and hope.

Beyond the statistics, Omo Ghana is about actual people caught up in the complex network of global migration. It explores how migration can benefit countries by promoting cultural diversity, creativity, and economic progress while also challenging the systems that govern them. The documentary encourages us to empathize with the migrant experience, urging us to see the humanity behind the headlines.

These catchy phrases, “You no go go?” and “We for jakpa!”, encapsulate the resilience, hope, and determination that characterize migration. They are more than just phrases—they are a reminder of the strength it takes to embark on such journeys, and the unbreakable connections that bind us across borders.

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress-led government will be the leanest and most efficient in the history of the country.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of his first six ministers at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, he further announced that he would soon name deputy ministers for some of the ministries, bringing the total number to 60.

“So far, I’ve named 42 ministers of state and regional ministers to begin the urgent task of resetting our dear country Ghana, which has suffered in recent years from severe crisis in many sectors. As the ministers are approved by Parliament and as they are sworn in, I’ll proceed to name deputy ministers for some of the ministries which will bring the total ministers to 60, as I promised the people of Ghana.

“This will make this government Ghana’s leanest, and I believe, most efficient government ever in history. I’ve just sworn you in – the first six ministers, who are responsible for perhaps the most critical sectors of our national life, especially economy and the energy sector,” he noted.

I would rather have a sub-contract with a record label than a full one

0

Ghanaian artiste, Krymi, has expressed his preference for a sub-contract with a record label, rather than a full record label deal.

In an interview with Onua FM, Krymi said that having a sub-contract with a record label allows him to maintain creative control and ownership of his music.

He believes that this approach gives him the freedom to focus on his artistry and produce music that is true to his vision, without being tied down by the limitations of a full record label deal.

“You can have a contract… entering into a record label will help some people. But I would rather do a sub-contract with a record label to have label services or certain things that I think the label will be able to do better for me.

“That’s what you see all the big artists like Wizkid do. They all have sub-contracts with the likes of empire and Sony. But signing fully into a record label, I don’t think I will be interested in that,” he said.

He maintained that with a sub-contract, he will be able to collaborate with a record label on specific projects, while still maintaining his independence.

Krymi’s preference for a sub-contract over a full record label deal shows his desire to produce authentic and meaningful songs.

As the music industry continues to reign, it will be interesting to see how this approach works out for him and whether other artists would follow in his footsteps.

The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Joseph Yammin, has dismissed rumors of a potential exit from the party following his supposed snub in the ministerial nominations.

In response to an earlier proverbial statement posted on his social media which reads “We live in a strange world where the poor walk miles to get food and the rich walks miles to digest it”, Yammin categorically affirmed that his loyalty lies with the party.

He expressed contentment and satisfaction with his current role within the party, emphasising his commitment to it and highlighting that he had vowed his dedication to the party long before their electoral successes.

He went on to dismiss assertions that his post was in response to not being appointed, adding that he had posted the same proverbial message a year ago.

He questioned why the same post a year ago was considered normal, but has now been given various interpretations, particularly in relation to appointments.

“1 year ago when I posted this on Facebook it was normal but a year later posting the same on Facebook has gotten so many meanings, especially with regards to appointments. For the records, I decided to stay in the party even before the victory was secured and am committed to that position,” he posted.

Yammin’s latest post appears to clarify earlier public assertions that he had reservations about not receiving a major appointment in the ruling government.

A cryptic post by the NDC stalwart on his social media page on January 21, 2025, sparked discussions and debates on social media.

The NDC stalwart shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) featuring himself alongside Mustapha Foyo Gbande, the party’s Deputy General Secretary, and several other individuals in a gathering.

The picture was accompanied by a cryptic proverbial tweet: “We live in a strange world where the poor walk miles to get food and the rich walks miles to digest it.”

While his statement could be seen as a critique of modern society, where the poor struggle to secure daily meals while the wealthy have easy access to food and only need to exercise to digest it, his tweet appears to suggest that some individuals, who worked hard to ensure the party’s success in the December 7 elections, have been sidelined in favor of others who did not contribute to the party’s efforts.

Although the politician’s social media post did not explicitly reference the recent developments within the NDC party and its government, many have connected his post to the ongoing appointments.

Critics have suggested that Yammin’s post may be a response to not receiving any appointments, despite his significant contributions to the party’s electoral successes.

They also suggested that certain individuals appointed to various positions may not have been deserving, noting that some appointees recently joined the party. In contrast, they highlighted Yammin’s long-standing loyalty and dedication to the party, implying that this could have merited a more prominent role for him.

Prosecution requests adjournment, court orders release of full proceedings

0

The High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, has directed the release of full proceedings in the ongoing trial of Michael Nyinaku, founder and CEO of the defunct Beige Bank Limited.

This development follows the prosecution’s request for an adjournment on Monday, January 20, when the 29th defense witness was expected to testify.

The prosecution’s request was granted, and the court ordered the release of full proceedings to both the prosecution and defense teams.

The defense lawyers did not oppose the adjournment request, and the case was adjourned to February 3, 2025.

The Beige Bank case involves Michael Nyinaku, who is facing trial for his role in the bank’s collapse. The trial has been ongoing, with multiple adjournments and developments.

Although the reason for the adjournment was unclear, EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, Murtala Inusah, reported that by February 3, 2025, the new Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, would have had time to familiarize himself with the case, which originated from the banking sector cleanup initiated by the previous Nana Akufo-Addo/Dr. Bawumia administration.

The founder of the defunct bank has been charged with 43 counts, including stealing, fraudulent breach of trust, and money laundering. He has pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution has closed its case after calling five witnesses, while Mr. Nyinaku is calling witnesses in his defense. Initially, 61 witnesses were expected to testify, but this number has been reduced to 41, with Witness 29 expected to testify before the adjournment.

Brief Facts

According to Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Nyinaku was the former Chief Executive Officer of Beige Bank. On August 1, 2018, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) revoked the banking license of Beige Bank and placed it in receivership.

A review of the bank’s financial and other records, conducted by the receiver and his team, revealed several suspicious and unusual transactions, which were subsequently reported to law enforcement agencies for investigation.

The investigations revealed that between 2015 and 2018, the accused, as CEO of the bank, allegedly used various means to transfer large sums of money to companies related to him and for his personal benefit. The funds transferred were depositors’ funds lodged with Beige Bank.

Between 2017 and 2018, Nyinaku allegedly caused the transfer of GH¢10,071.00 from fixed deposit accounts, in which various customers had placed a total of GH¢448,636,210.21, to Beige Capital Asset Management Limited (BCAM), without the knowledge or consent of the customers. BCAM is a limited liability company wholly owned by the Beige Group Limited, an entity also wholly owned by the accused.

Further investigations revealed that between 2017 and 2018, the accused caused the transfer of 35 fixed deposit investments belonging to 23 customers of Beige Bank, valued at GH¢141,042,348.92, to the Beige Group.

Additional Findings

In March 2018, the accused allegedly caused a “fictitious” second account to be opened in the name of First African Savings and Loans (FASL), an existing account holder with Beige Bank, without the knowledge of FASL’s board and management. Subsequently, GH¢320 million was transferred from Beige Bank customer accounts into BCAM accounts and then into the “fictitious” FASL account.

Between March 2018 and August 2018, GH¢21,123,270.96 out of the GH¢320 million was transferred from the fictitious FASL account to two individuals and ten companies, nine of which were related to Nyinaku.

Email Transactions

Between 2015 and 2017, the accused allegedly caused the payment of GH¢1,465,000.00 of depositors’ funds to himself and others, recorded in a general ledger account described as the “Directors’ Account.” Additionally, GH¢20,599,052.58 was transferred to the bank’s “Shareholders’ Account.”

Between 2016 and 2017, GH¢141,742,087.70 was transferred to companies and individuals, recorded under the “Prepayment-Project Work Account.” From 2017 to 2018, GH¢118,076,813.09 was also transferred to companies and individuals for the accused’s benefit, recorded under the “Beige Group Account.”

As of August 1, 2018, when Beige Bank’s license was revoked, the money allegedly appropriated by the accused remained unpaid.

In 1987, he was named Ghana’s Sportsman of the Year in recognition of his remarkable athletic achievements. His leadership roles include serving as President of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) and the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

In 2006, Professor Dodoo was honored with the Grand Medal of the Republic of Ghana for his outstanding contributions to the nation. His appointment signifies a commitment to integrity and excellence within the Mahama administration.

Parliament Restricts Ministerial Vetting To Public

0

Parliament has restricted public access to the ministerial vetting, citing high public interest and the need for security and smooth proceedings. As a result, only individuals with invitation cards or official accreditation will be allowed into the Committee room and Parliament’s precincts.

To ensure public engagement, Parliament has accredited several media houses to broadcast the proceedings live. The public is encouraged to follow the vetting process through these platforms.

David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations, emphasized Parliament’s commitment to public cooperation and security during this critical exercise.

The vetting process is being conducted in line with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the procedure for appointing ministers.

I travelled with the president to Dubai; he didn’t use a private jet

Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has refuted allegations that President John Dramani Mahama used a private jet for his recent official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Speaking on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Dr. Ato Forson stated that he personally accompanied the president on the trip and confirmed that they traveled on a commercial Emirates flight.

“I travelled with President Mahama on his recent trip to the UAE, and he didn’t use a private jet. I was on the flight with him, and we used Emirates,” he stated.

The Majority Leader further challenged former Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, who raised concerns about the president’s choice of travel arrangements, to provide evidence to challenge his claims.

“Mr. Speaker, the immediate past defence minister claimed that the president used a rented private jet, and I challenge him to bring evidence now,” he remarked.

Dominic Nitiwul, in raising the issue, expressed concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to use the presidential jet for international duties, arguing that the aircraft is in good condition and should be utilised, instead of opting for commercial or private flights.

This rebuttal comes after a communication to Parliament that informed the House of President Mahama’s travel to the UAE for official duties.

Nitiwul Criticizes Mahama’s Commercial Flight Use

0

Dominic Nitiwul

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has criticized President John Dramani Mahama for opting to travel on commercial flights despite the availability of a serviceable government-owned jet. His comments followed accusations by outgoing Majority Chief Whip, Kwame Governs Agbodza, that former President Akufo-Addo rented private jets to travel within the country.

Mr. Agbodza, Member of Parliament (MP) for Adaklu, while addressing murmurs on the floor about President Mahama’s recent travel, emphatically asserted that the president had not used government funds for private jet rentals.

“President Mahama traveled on a commercial flight, unlike the previous President, who rented private jets even for domestic travel,” Mr. Agbodza stated.

The Adaklu MP’s comments were met with a rebuttal from former Minister of Defence Dominic Nitiwul, who dismissed the accusations against former President Akufo-Addo.

Mr. Nitiwul acknowledged that while the government’s jet was serviceable, he believed it was wrong for President Mahama to have used commercial flights when a government jet was available.

“It is wrong for the president of the republic to be going on commercial jets when the jet that they have used their money to pay for and buy is available and is working,” he said, stressing that the president’s security should be paramount, especially when traveling abroad.

Nitiwul again dismissed allegations that former President Akufo-Addo had not used commercial airlines, providing examples of the ex-president’s travel on British Airways and Qatar Airways.

He further clarified that while Mr. Akufo-Addo had never rented private jets for domestic travel, he had occasionally used private jets for international flights, particularly in West Africa.

Mr. Nitiwul also rebutted claims that the government’s jet had been underutilized during the Akufo-Addo administration, stating that it had been in use since its return from France after undergoing extensive repairs.

He underscored that the aircraft had been in service for months, with the current president having used it for official trips.

“The president has been using it ever since it returned from France,” Nitiwul confirmed. “It is not as if we were not using that aircraft and now we want President Mahama to use it.”

AngloGold Ashanti Schools To Reopen Jan. 27

One of the schools

Students of AngloGold Ashanti Schools in Obuasi are now scheduled to resume classes on January 27, 2025, amid ongoing unrest within the mining community.

The school management had initially planned to reopen on Wednesday, January 22, but a recent statement announced the delay, allowing time for calm to be restored before students return.

“Management is continuing broader consultations with relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone upon reopening,” the statement noted.

This decision follows a careful evaluation of the situation in Obuasi, prioritizing the safety of students, staff, and all involved parties. Both AGA Schools and Williams and Brew School are expected to resume their activities on Monday.

The temporary closure of all schools—both private and public—was implemented due to security concerns stemming from violent confrontations between the military and illegal miners.

This unrest has disrupted the academic progress of the schools, which had only recently reopened three weeks ago.

In response, AGA Schools’ management has introduced measures to revise the academic calendar and recover lost teaching hours.

“To make up for the lost contact hours, particularly for our candidates preparing for the Cambridge IGCSE, Checkpoint Examinations, and the 2025 BECE, we will adjust the academic calendar,” the statement concluded.

Gender and ethnic considerations in appointments problematic – Prof Gyampo

0

Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana (UG) has condemned the calls for gender and ethnicity balance in President John Mahama’s ministerial appointments.

He argued that, as a developing country, Ghana should not prioritize gender, ethnic, or regional balance when forming a government.

“Governance in a developing country is too serious a matter to be determined by mere considerations of gender, ethnicity, and regionalism,” he said on Joy FM’s on Wednesday, January 22.

Prof Gyampo explained, “While the constitution calls for regional balance, I believe it is not infallible.

Even the Bible faces challenges regarding its interpretation, and similarly, the constitution has provisions that can hinder our development, which is why it is reviewed.”

Gyampo further rejected the notion that President Mahama should appoint more women or ensure equal representation for all regions.

He stated, “The idea of appointing individuals from all regions without prioritizing competency is problematic. Focusing on gender, regionalism, and ethnicity, without considering competency, will continue to hinder our efforts to govern effectively and bring about development.”

Mahama directs new ministers to declare assets

0

President John Mahama has directed all ministers in his administration to declare their assets as part of efforts to curb corruption.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the first six appointed ministers at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, January 22, the President emphasised the importance of transparency and accountability in governance.

“I expect all of you to begin the process of declaring your assets,” he instructed, adding that the Chief of Staff would soon announce a cut-off date by which all eligible appointees must submit their asset declaration forms to the Auditor-General.

President Mahama stressed that this measure is critical in preventing corruption and ensuring that public officials adhere to the highest standards of integrity.

He warned that it cannot be “business as usual” in his government and urged the ministers to embrace fairness and openness in all their dealings.

He also assured the public that anti-corruption institutions would be strengthened to investigate and address any breaches of the law by appointees.

The President reiterated his commitment to working with the newly sworn-in ministers, pledging to provide them with the support they need to serve Ghanaians effectively while upholding principles of good governance.

Ghana needs to do the right things to attract international investors – Ofosu-Adjare

0

Minister-designate for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has emphasised the importance of adhering to international standards to expand Ghana’s access to global markets.

She highlighted key steps, including the regulation of agricultural inputs and addressing social issues, to enhance the country’s economic prospects.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointment Committee for vetting on Wednesday, January 21, she said: “It is important that we do the right things to access international markets.”

She also pointed out the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s commitment to ensuring that only approved chemicals are used in agricultural production.

She noted that failing to meet international standards undermines the nation’s efforts, adding, “If we work hard but our produce and products fail to meet international standards, we are doing ourselves a disservice.”

Madam Ofosu-Adjare also stressed addressing issues such as child labour in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection to ensure compliance with ethical trade requirements.

She underscored the need for improved standardisation and capacity building to boost compliance with global trade standards.

“For standardisation, we need to up our game as a country. Sometimes, there is a lack of knowledge. So if we do capacity building, we should be able to fall within the standards,” she said.

By enhancing these areas, she asserted, Ghana could increase exports, generate intended revenues, and achieve a stable economy.

“When all these things are done right, our exports will go up, and at the end of the day, we will have a stable economy,” she concluded.

Ghana Premier League logo Ghana Premier League logo

As part of its vision to transform Ghana’s sports landscape, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled plans to introduce a groundbreaking policy where the government will pay commissions to players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

This pledge was announced by Dr. Fred Awaah, the party’s manifesto spokesperson on Sports, during an interview with Sporty FM.

Dr. Awaah described this initiative as a key element of the NDC’s sports development agenda.

“We are committed, as a government, to paying commissions to Ghana Premier League players. This is not free money; it’s an investment that we expect to have a ripple effect on others,” he stated.

Additionally, Dr. Awaah highlighted the party’s ambitious plan to support the country’s elite athletes through educational opportunities.

“The NDC government will offer scholarships to athletes to attend top universities worldwide, where they can be nurtured into Olympic-level competitors,” he added.

This announcement aligns with President Mahama’s campaign promise to reform Ghanaian sports through a comprehensive National Sports Policy.

If implemented, these policies could represent a significant step toward revitalizing sports in the country.

Government to restructure Ghana News Agency/Information Services Department

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Jan 22, GNA – The Government is poised to restructure the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and the Information Services Department (ISD) to empower them to deliver more effectively on their mandates.

President John Dramani Mahama said the Government needed to create a certain synergy and modernise those two state organisations to enhance news and information flow.

“One of the things that remains to be done is to bring the Information Services Department under the Presidency and modernise that organisation from a civil service organisation into a modern organisation that gives guaranteed information flow to the public in respect of whatever government is doing,” he said.

“The days of the cinema van is gone. Now we have all kinds of new instruments of communication. That Department must be reformed.”

President Mahama stated this on Wednesday when Madam Esther Ambah Numaba Cobbah, the President, Institute of Public Relations (IPR), Ghana, paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

She led a delegation of IPR Ghana to congratulate President Mahama on his election victory.

The President said restructuring the ISD would enable it to serve as a good platform for Government’s communication in terms of making as much information available as possible to the public.

As the Government planned to restructure the two organisations, IPR Ghana, as a professional body, would have a lot to weigh in in terms of how those objectives would be achieved.

The President assured of freedom of expression under his administration as guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution, especially Chapter 12.

That, he said, had been one of the most progressive provisions in any constitution that guaranteed the flow of information and freedom for people to express themselves, which was critical to the work of communication professionals.

“And so, of course, the government will continue to guarantee that freedom. And I know that under the last administration, there were a lot of issues to do without being downgraded on the Freedom Index …” he said.

“And I think that together we can work to be able to restore Ghana to its pride of place in terms of media freedoms and free expression.”

The President said the Government would collaborate with the IPR Ghana to secure a site to construct a permanent office complex, just as the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has.

Madam Cobbah congratulated President Mahama on his victory and commended him for being a committed Member of the Institute and donating a bus to the members.

She assured him of the services of IPR Ghana in communication, when the need arises.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) is the nation’s most authentic and reliable wire service.

It was established on March 5, 1957, on the eve of Ghana’s Independence and charged with the “dissemination of truthful unbiased news”.

It was the first news agency to be established in Sub-Saharan Africa by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

GNA was part of a comprehensive communication policy that sought to harness the information arm of the state to build a viable, united and cohesive nation-state.

It has been operating in the unique role of mobilising the citizens for nation building, economic and social development, national unity and integration.

Majority to constitute new leadership on January 23

0

The Majority in Parliament has announced plans to restructure and reveal its new leadership in the House on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

This decision follows calls from the Minority Caucus urging the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to formally reorganize the leadership of the Majority Caucus to enhance the effectiveness of legislative proceedings.

The move comes in the wake of the approval of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Majority Leader, as Minister for Finance, and Governs Agbodza, the Majority Chief Whip, as Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways.

Raising concerns on the floor of Parliament, Matthew Nyindam, the Member of Parliament for Kpandai, likened the current state of the House to “a sheep without a shepherd,” underscoring the pressing need for clear leadership within the Majority Caucus.

“We are confused about who is leading government business in the House. They should tell us who is leading us in this House because business must progress. We are here and ready to support them, but we don’t know our leader. We are all concerned. We cannot run this House like that. Go and enjoy your ministerial role—Minister for Roads or Finance—but the black seat is empty. We want to help government business to run, but as we sit now, we are confused,” he stated.

Responding to the concerns, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson reassured the House that the Majority Caucus would designate its front bench by the following day.

“I am still the leader of the House, and I have not been sworn in as the Minister of Finance. God willing, tomorrow, the NDC Caucus will designate our front bench,” he affirmed.

Abdallah Salifu explains Isaac Adongo’s absence from recent ministerial appointments

Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has explained that while the NDC enjoys a strong majority in Parliament, the extensive pool of skilled and experienced members has led to tough decisions regarding ministerial assignments.

Addressing speculation about the absence of Bolgatanga Central Member of Parliament (MP), Isaac Adongo, from the government’s ministerial appointments during an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Salifu highlighted the challenges of balancing regional representation with the overwhelming number of qualified candidates within the party.

“Irrespective of their backgrounds, the people of Ghana are desirous of a system that guarantees equal justice for all and nothing more or nothing less. It is quite clear that so much needs to be done in so short a time and I assure the people of Ghana that this government will rise to the challenge and will reset our country. As I pointed out through during my inaugural speech, Ghanaians have, through their votes, declared their intention to demand the highest standards of governance and we cannot afford to fail them,” he noted.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho Central in the Volta Region, Edem Kofi Kpotosu, has distanced himself from the recent vandalism and violence act on the part of some party youth at the Ho Central Constituency office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over President John Dramani Mahama’s list of ministerial appointments.

In a statement, Kpotosu strongly condemned the acts of destruction, emphasizing that such behaviour does not reflect the values of the people of Ho Central or the NDC as a whole.

“I stand firmly against any form of violence, vandalism, and unpatriotic behaviour.

These actions do not represent the people of Ho Central nor do they align with our shared values of respect, dialogue, and peace,” he stated.

The MP acknowledged that some constituents may feel discontent over the appointment process, but he urged them to express their concerns peacefully and constructively, rather than resorting to aggression and destruction.

“Disagreement is a vital part of our democracy, but it must be channelled through dialogue and constructive engagement, not through acts of aggression or vandalism,” he added.

Kpotosu reaffirmed his support for President Mahama’s appointments and urged his constituents to remain calm, as the process of selecting government officials is still ongoing.

To ensure justice, the MP has called on the Ghana Police Service to launch a full investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.

He further assured the people of Ho Central of his commitment to serving their best interests, working collaboratively with local leaders, community organizations, and constituents to maintain peace and unity in the constituency.

“Let us focus on building bridges, not walls. Together, we can work towards a brighter future for Ho Central,” he concluded.

Infrastructure needed to boost hospitality industry

0

Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has underscored the importance of improving infrastructure in Ghana’s hospitality industry to attract more visitors and boost national revenue.

Concerns have been raised by key stakeholders about the declining state of the hospitality sector, which has led many Ghanaians to seek tourism opportunities abroad.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, 2025, Abla Dzifa Gomashie lamented the inadequate infrastructure needed to meet both domestic and international demand.

She pledged to collaborate with the private sector to enhance infrastructure and increase the sector’s capacity to accommodate the growing interest in tourism.

“This is an unending discussion, especially where hotel rates are concerned. Even hotels that have franchises in other countries, tend to be very high, comparatively. I agree with you about the lack of infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the world and our country is bear in our faces.

“Apart from engaging with the minister of finance, I think that everybody and anyone listening to me who is willing to engage with the private sector in Ghana, out of Ghana to ensure that we improve on our infrastructure capacities, you’re welcome to engage me after the vetting and if I get the nod this is an issue that we must deal with.

“I agree with you that the lack of these facilities takes away from what could be revenue for our country.”

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah / Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Jan 22, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused President John Dramani Mahama of violating Section 4(1) of the Presidential Office Act by making appointments to his office without consulting the Council of State.

According to the Minority, the President made the appointments on January 21, 2025, despite the Council of State not being constituted.

Speaking at a Press Conference on Wednesday, Mr Patrick Boamah, the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central, said: “Section 4(1) says that the president shall appoint such officers in consultation with the Council of State.”

“We, as a Minority, believe that the President has acted in breach of this Act or the provisions of Act 463,” he said, and urged the President to retract the appointment letters and adhere to the legal requirements of the Act.

“… We are requesting the President to kindly withdraw this letter and act in consultation with the Council of State, which is not in place. At best, this letter could have been issued with a paragraph stating that these appointments are being made pending the composition of the Council of State and will be regularised in conformity with this Act,” Mr Boamah said.

The GAF claimed that troops returned fire in self-defense, resulting in the deaths of seven illegal miners, while one individual sustained serious injuries.

In light of the incident, President Mahama ordered an investigation into the deaths of the eight alleged illegal miners involved in the invasion of the AngloGold Ashanti mine concession.
