Mahama’s government open to diaspora inclusion

0

The Minister of State for Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has expressed optimism about the possibility of President John Dramani Mahama increasing the inclusion of members of the Ghanaian diaspora in his administration.

Kwakye Ofosu, during his vetting on Friday, January 31, highlighted the President’s track record of breaking barriers and embracing diversity in governance.

He began his remarks by praising President Mahama’s progressive approach to leadership, describing him as a trailblazer who has consistently shattered societal and political barriers.

According to the Minister-Designate, Mahama’s administration has demonstrated a strong commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that no group or section of society is left behind.

“Given what he has shown so far, I will not be surprised that members of the diaspora who show competence and capacity will find some place in his government. He has broken every glass ceiling there is. There is hardly any section of society that has not found a place in his government.

“So I will not be surprised when that happens except that I am unable to state categorically that that will happen and so I will leave that to the government.”

Kwakye Ofosu pointed to President Mahama’s historic appointment of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Vice President, making her the first woman to hold such a position in Ghana’s history.

Additionally, he praised the President’s appointment of an appreciable number of women and individuals from underrepresented groups to key positions, reinforcing his commitment to gender equality and diversity.

Expanding on his point, Kwakye Ofosu highlighted the immense potential of the Ghanaian diaspora to contribute to national development.

He acknowledged the vast pool of skilled professionals and experts living abroad, whose expertise could be instrumental in shaping policies and driving innovation in various sectors.

Ghana Advances Debt Restructuring, Faces Final Challenges

0

Ghana has successfully restructured 93% of its external debt, with only 7% remaining to be negotiated, valued at approximately $2.7 billion. This significant achievement was confirmed by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson during a recent media briefing where he highlighted the government’s progress under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.

Dr. Forson emphasized the complexity of the situation, noting, “The road ahead is narrow but steep.” The unresolved portion of Ghana’s debt involves negotiations with around 60 commercial banks, which operate independently of the formal groups, making these discussions particularly challenging.

Press charges against MPs for damaging microphones, tables – Ras Mubarak to Attorney-General

Ras Mubarak is a former MP of Kumbungu Ras Mubarak is a former MP of Kumbungu

The former Member of Parliament of Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak has strongly condemned the chaos that erupted in Parliament between the Minority and Majority sides of the Appointments Committee during the vetting process on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

The former parliamentarian did not hold back, sharply criticising the lawmakers involved in the altercation for displaying what he called ‘disgusting behavior,’ and describing the incident as an act of thuggery.

In a Facebook post on Friday, January 31, 2025, Mubarak called for the prosecution of the Members of Parliament, accusing them of deliberately causing damage to state property.

He urged the Attorney General to take action, press charges, and pursue the matter to set a deterrent, highlighting the dangerous precedent the chaotic incident could set.

“Under the Public Property Protection Law, ‘Any person who by carelessness, gross negligence or dishonesty misapplies or causes the dissipation of or loss or damage to public property shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to imprisonment not exceeding five years or to a fine not exceeding GH¢50,000 or to both’,” he wrote.

He added, “I think my very good friend the Attorney General should press charges against those Members of Parliament who willfully damaged microphones and tables. Until we make examples of adults who fool around, this disgusting behavior put out tonight could be viewed as normal behavior. Let’s not condone thuggery.”

His comments come in the wake of chaotic scenes and altercations that erupted during the vetting process of Minister of Health-designate, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Several microphones used by the committee to address the floor were damaged during the altercation. Photos circulating on social media show tables scattered with plastic cups, used tissues, and cables connected to the damaged microphones.

Savannah Regional Minister-Designate pledges to resolve conflicts through research

0

Salisu Bi-Awuribe, the Minister-Designate for the Savannah Region, has vowed to employ a research-driven approach to uncover the root causes of conflicts in the region and resolve them through dialogue and collaboration.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, 2025, Bi-Awuribe emphasised the inevitability of conflicts in human interactions but expressed optimism about his ability to address them effectively.

In his opening remarks, Bi-Awuribe acknowledged that conflicts are an intrinsic part of human behaviour and social interactions.

However, he was quick to stress that the key to managing conflicts lies in understanding their underlying causes and addressing them at their roots.

Bi-Awuribe emphasised that conflicts in the Savannah Region, like in other parts of Ghana, often arise from misunderstandings, communication gaps, and competing interests.

He asserted that without a comprehensive understanding of the specific issues at play, it is difficult to formulate effective solutions.

“Conflicts are part of human behaviour and in many instances, when you identify the source or the cause of the conflicts, it is easy to resolve them and so I intend to identify the cause of conflicts and resolve them.

“Some of the conflicts that exist are nothing but communication gaps between the Member of Parliament for the area whom the people voted for and are always contacting and an appointed DCE who might not have participated actively even in getting the MP and the government elected.”

2024/25 Ghana Premier League: Week 19 Match Report – Hearts of Oak 1-0 Heart of Lions – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Hearts of Oak returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Heart of Lions in the Ghana Premier League on Friday, extending their unbeaten run to six matches.

A second-half penalty, coolly converted by forward Mawuli Wayo, proved decisive in securing all three points for the Phobians at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Head coach Aboubakar Ouattara made a few tactical changes to the team that was held to a goalless draw by Basake Holy Stars in their previous fixture.

He handed new signing Seth Osei a place in the starting lineup, while Kwesi Asmah and Abdul Aziz Adam also made their debuts for the club after coming on as second-half substitutes.

The first half saw Hearts create the better goal-scoring chances, although both teams were evenly matched in terms of possession.

Hamza Issah missed a golden opportunity in the 29th minute, failing to put his side ahead.

However, the breakthrough came early in the second half when Wayo confidently slotted home from the penalty spot, marking his fifth goal of the season.

With this crucial win, Hearts have climbed to fourth place on the league table, level on points with Lions and just one point behind leaders Asante Kotoko SC.

Meanwhile, Lions have struggled in recent matches, managing only one win in their last four games, suffering three defeats in the process.

Despite their setback, they remain in third place, still in contention for the top spot.

The Phobians will now look to build on this momentum as they aim to challenge for the league title, while Lions will need to regroup and find consistency to stay in the title race.

PPP Is The Way To Sustain Thriving Economies – KGL CEO

0

The Executive Chairman of KGL Group, Alex Dadey, has called on African leaders to collaborate with the private sector to harness the full potential of its resources to achieve sustainable growth.

He said Public Private Partnership (PPP) is the surest way to sustainable economic growth but would be difficult to achieve if African economies fail to partner with the private sector.

Addressing participants at the 3rd edition of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2025 in Accra, he said such partnership is the surest way to develop African economies.

He said governments therefore need to collaborate with the private sector to help unlock potentials that would accelerate the continent’s development.

“Central to our growth is the power of public-private partnership which serves as a cornerstone for delivering critical infrastructure and fostering sustainable economic growth. I have always maintained that governments do not create wealth, the private sector does,” he noted.

He stated that providing incentives as well as other forms of support would enable governments to leverage the expertise, innovation, and funding of private enterprises to tackle the complex challenges to facilitate economic development in ways that would otherwise be unattainable.

Mr. Dadey also cited some examples of partnerships with some state institutions that have brought some substantial benefits.

“Our strategic partnership with the Ghana National Lottery Authority has revitalized the state lottery sector in Ghana by turning it from a loss-making one to one of the most profitable state enterprises in Ghana in just under four years.

He said the KGL Group among other innovations combined technologies, operational efficiency, marketing expertise, and capital injection with the government’s regulatory framework and public trust making significant contributions to the economy.

“We must leverage the power of inclusion and collaboration, harness the potential of diaspora, create tax incentives to attract investment, and support the next generation of entrepreneurs.

“Together, we can build a more integrated, prosperous, and resilient Africa,” he added.

The 3-Days conference was held under the theme, “Delivering Africa’s single market through Infrastructure: Invest, connect, integrate” which started on Thursday, January 30, 2025, and ends on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

Mahama is not one for flamboyance – Felix Ofosu Kwakye

0

The Minister of State-designate for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye says that President John Mahama is not one who indulges in flamboyance or ostentation.

According to him, President Mahama always prioritises cost-effective travel options, ensuring that taxpayer money was not wasted on luxury or unnecessary expenses.

Speaking on the issue of presidential travel during his vetting on Friday, January 31, Mr Kwakye highlighted the president’s personal commitment to modesty and financial prudence.

“President Mahama is not one who is given to flamboyance and ostentation. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of traveling with him a couple of times.

“There was a day that we were supposed to join a commercial aircraft. He was willing to go onto that aircraft that had only two seats left without any of his aides,” he said.

He recounted an occasion when President Mahama travelled from Frankfurt to Accra in economy class without complaint, even though he could have opted for a more comfortable arrangement.

He noted that unlike former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who rented expensive private jets for official travel, Mr Mahama has consistently chosen the most cost-effective means available.

Mr Kwakye assured Ghanaians that once the presidential aircraft was confirmed to be in good condition, the President would use it for all his official trips.

He stressed that unless unavoidable circumstances dictate otherwise, Mr Mahama would always opt for the most affordable and safe travel alternative.

“He will use it every single time that he has to travel, unless, of course, some circumstance makes it impossible, even then, he will choose the cheapest option available to the extent that it is safe and can take him to wherever he has to go,” he stated.

His remarks come amid growing debates over government travel expenditures, with concerns raised about the high cost of renting private jets.

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has expressed strong disapproval over President Mahama’s decision to use his brother’s private jet for official duties instead of the state-owned presidential jet.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, January 22, he described the move as “wrong” and questioned the rationale behind abandoning a fully functional presidential jet.

“I’m saying that there’s a lack of sincerity,” The Bimbilla MP stated.

“The presidential jet is in good order. In fact, former President Nana Akufo-Addo used this presidential jet either on the 22nd or 23rd of December to Takoradi because we had to go to Nzulezu to commission a Naval base, and he used this jet. I was there. It was the same jet he used on 29th December to Kumasi,” he said.

GPL WEEK 19: Mawuli Wayo’s penalty seals vital win for Hearts of Oak over Heart of Lions

0

Accra Hearts of Oak claimed a 1-0 win at home over Heart of Lions to climb to the 4th place of the Premier League table.

Mawul Wayo was the match-winner for Coach Ouattarra’s side as he smashed in his 5th goal of the season from the penalty spot after Stephen Appiah Asare was brought fouled.

The Phobians were kept in the game by Benjamin Asare as he prevented visitors from earning a point at the University of Ghana Stadium.

It was a tough battle for the hosts as the visitors looked more likely to punish them for the second time this season, but Hearts had their goalkeeper and his defenders to thank for their good job.

However, Hearts of Oak carried the greater attacking threat early on in the second half and went on to snatch the three points in the 51st minute.

Wayo kept his composure to convert his spot-kick past Lawrence Osei to keep Hearts perfect, which earned him the MVP award.

The result sees Hearts of Oak move to 4th position with 33 points – 1 point off the top spot.

They will now switch their attention to Bechem United’s clash on Matchday 20, while Heart of Lions, who sits 3rd, will return home to face Dreams FC.

FORMAL COMMUNICATION OF THE RT. HON. ALBAN SUMANA KINGSFORD BAGBIN IN RESPECT OF HAPPENINGS AT THE APPOINTMENT COMMITTEE OF PARLIAMENT

 FRIDAY 31ST JANUARY 2025

Members, in furtherance of the powers conferred on me by the Constitution, 1992, the Parliament Act, 1965, Act 300, the Standing Orders of Parliament, and the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament of Ghana, I make this statement with a heavy heart and “righteous anger”.

I am so shocked and scandalized at what I saw and heard through various media outlets, that happened at the sittings of the Appointments Committee yesterday, 30th of January 2025 and this morning. Today, I read the views and reports of our brothers and sisters of the media as to what took place at the said sittings of the Committee. The outrage of the public and the people we represent and serve is apt and understandable.

What should have been a solemn exercise in parliamentary scrutiny degenerated into an appalling display of chaos and lawlessness, bringing this House into disrepute before the entire world. What transpired was not just a gross affront to the dignity of Parliament but also a blatant contempt of the House. This further aggravates the already existing low level of trust of Parliament and Parliamentarians.

I have the unfortunate burden of responding to the disgraceful and deeply regrettable events that unfolded during the Appointments Committee.

Such behaviour is utterly unacceptable and a direct affront to the dignity of this House. The actions of those involved have sullied the image of Parliament and also betrayed the trust of the Ghanaian people, whose expectations of leadership, decorum, and responsible conduct have been callously disregarded.

The Parliament of Ghana is expected to stand as the foremost institution of democracy, entrusted with the solemn duty of upholding the principles of good governance, integrity, and selfless public service. Yet, the events that transpired during the Appointments Committee hearing yesterday have gravely undermined these ideals.

These incidents represent a new low in parliamentary conduct and is particularly egregious given its timing and recurrence. It is unconscionable that Members who are supposed to be leaders elected to serve as representatives of the people would engage in violent confrontations in a setting that demands the highest levels of maturity, emotional intelligence, and statesmanship.

It is deeply troubling that this is the third time in as many years that such an incident has occurred within the precincts of Parliament. Each time, public outrage has been met with empty apologies and no real change in conduct. This House must acknowledge that it is rapidly eroding public confidence in Ghana’s democracy and that such conduct, if not decisively addressed, will have grave consequences for the credibility of Parliament and the future of democracy in our dear nation.

Even more alarming is the involvement of some senior members of the House and members in leadership, individuals who ought to embody the principles of leadership and discipline. Their participation in this deplorable spectacle raises serious questions about their fitness to lead and their commitment to upholding the values of Parliament. If Members cannot engage in robust debate without resorting to physical aggression, then they are unfit to discharge the mandate bestowed upon them by the people of Ghana.

Parliamentary privilege does not and will never extend to lawlessness. The Rules of Parliament exist to guide conduct, and Members are duty-bound to uphold them. Ghanaian citizens deserve a Parliament that exemplifies discipline, intelligence, and the pursuit of national progress, not one that degenerates into a battleground at the slightest disagreement.

The international community is watching. As Speaker, I have received numerous calls from concerned citizens, civil society organisations, and parliamentary counterparts across the world, all lamenting the disgraceful conduct of Members of this House.

This unfortunate development is a direct contradiction of the repeated admonitions I have issued to Members. I have consistently reminded this House that respect is earned, not demanded. The manner in which Members conduct themselves determines the extent to which they command the respect of the Ghanaian people. Yet, despite these admonitions, some Members continue to act in a way that dishonours this House and its traditions. This must stop. Parliament cannot continue to excuse misconduct under the guise of political disagreement.

Consequently, the following emergency measures are to be taken with dispatch:

  • In the circumstances of the absence of a Privileges and Immunity Committee, a seven-member special committee shall be constituted under Orders 5 and 20 rule 4 to conduct a full-scale investigation into the events of yesterday and this morning. The committee shall identify all Members involved in the disorder and submit its report with findings and recommendations within 10 days from today. Any Member found culpable shall face the appropriate disciplinary measures as prescribed by the Constitution, 1992, the Parliament Act of 1965, and the Standing Orders of Parliament. The following members shall constitute the membership of the Special Committee;

¡ Hon Emmanuel Bedzrah – Chairman

¡¡ Hon  Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi

¡¡¡  Hon Gizella Akushika Tetteh- Agbotui (Mrs)

¡v Hon Abena Osei Asare (Mrs)

v Hon Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings (Dr)

v¡ Hon Vincent Oppong Asamoah and

v¡¡ Hon Bede Anwataazuma Ziedeng.

  • In pursuant to section 10 of the Parliamentary Service Act, 1993, Act 460, I directed the Clerk to Parliament to cause to undertake a full assessment of all damage caused within the committee room and parliamentary precincts as a result of the misconduct of the members. Not a single pesewa of public funds shall be used to repair or replace any damaged property. Instead, Members found responsible shall be surcharged for the full cost of repairs and replacement, with deductions made from their emoluments including the salaries of members, if necessary.
  • In pursuance of the provisions of the Constitution, 1992, and the Standing Orders of Parliament, I further direct the Clerk to Parliament to formally lodge a complaint with the Ghana Police Service to conduct a full criminal investigation into the matter for appropriate action.
  • I call for an immediate meeting of the Committee of Selection today, to reconstitute the Appointments Committee as a matter of urgency and to set up the Standing Orders Committee to reconsider a revision of the rules for the assessment of nominees for the consideration and approval by the House.
  • I draw the attention of Members to the sanctions provided for in the Parliament Act and the Standing Orders of Parliament in the event of a breach of privilege or contempt of Parliament under Orders 34(2) and 36. Also see Article 123 of the Constitution, 1992.

Let there be no doubt, Parliament’s credibility has been seriously undermined, and urgent punitive action has to be taken since this was done contemptus Parlamenti in facie parlamenti. Consequently, the following members are suspended from the sittings of Parliament for two weeks from today. They are;

Mr Rockson Nelson Etse Kwame Dafeamakpor

Mr Frank Annor-Dompreh

Mr Alhassan Sulemana Tampuuli and

Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

In the meantime, a Deputy Whip from each side of the political divide is hereby directed to act instead.

As Speaker, I reaffirm my commitment to restoring the dignity of this House. The people of Ghana deserve a Parliament that exemplifies leadership, integrity, and discipline. Members must reflect deeply on their conduct and be reminded that they hold their seats in trust for the people. The events of 30th January 2025 and this morning must not be repeated.

CONCLUSION

I am deeply disappointed by the conduct of Members involved in this shameful episode. Their actions have brought disrepute to Parliament and undermined the democratic values we have sworn to uphold.

I wish to extend my sincere apologies to the Ghanaian people for this national embarrassment and assure them that this House will not allow such an incident to recur. Parliament must and will do better.

I call on all Members to reflect on their actions, uphold the dignity of this institution, and recommit themselves to the principles of democracy and responsible leadership.

Thank you.

The Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that 156 Ghanaians are about to be deported from the United States.

Taking his time before Parliament’s Appointments Committee today, he confirmed claims that President Donald Trump planned to deport 6,200 people from the United States.

He also stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with US authorities to protect the rights and dignity of the affected Ghanaians.

According to certain reports, the mass deportation by the United States will impact roughly 6,200 Ghanaians. However, according to the brief I received from Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials, they allay concerns that the numbers are not that high and that, as of right now, the ministry has received official notification from Washington, DC, that there are 156 people, not 6,200, who are in danger of deportation,” he said.

Over 3,500 undocumented immigrants have been detained nationwide by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

Additionally, the Trump administration has started deportation flights, which use American military planes to return migrants to their home countries.

Only 156 Ghanaians facing deportation from the US

0

The Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has clarified that only 156 Ghanaians are currently facing imminent deportation from the United States, contrary to earlier reports suggesting a mass deportation of 6,200 individuals under President Donald Trump.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Ablakwa stated that official information from U.S. authorities indicates a significantly lower number of affected individuals.

According to him, only 156 Ghanaians are at risk of deportation from the U.S., not 6,200, as previously reported in the media.

He also assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with U.S. authorities to safeguard the rights and dignity of affected Ghanaians.

“There have been publications that about 6,200 Ghanaians will be affected by the mass deportation by the United States. But from the brief that has been shared with me from the officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they allay fears that the numbers are not that high and that currently, the official communication the ministry has received from Washington DC is 156, not 6,200, which face imminent deportation,” he stated.

Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested more than 3,500 unauthorized immigrants across the country.

The Trump administration has also begun deportation flights, using U.S. military aircraft to transport migrants to their countries of origin or third nations.

According to estimates by the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 11 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S., which has a total population of 341 million.

Champions League playoffs: Manchester City to face Madrid, Celtic land Bayern | Champions League

0

Manchester City must overcome Real Madrid if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive after the pair were drawn together for a blockbuster playoff tie.

In a fiendish consequence of City’s scratchy league phase, which saw them narrowly avoid early elimination by finishing 22nd, they will face the La Liga leaders and reigning European champions in February. Celtic have been dealt an equally tough assignment in the form of Bayern Munich. The playoff winners will all enter the round of 16 but there is no further safety net for those defeated.

It means a swift renewal of acquaintances for City and Real, who have contested 10 Champions League ties in the last decade and most recently met in last season’s quarter-finals. City, who were the holders, lost a penalty shootout at the Etihad Stadium after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

City will hope that an uptick in their previously disastrous domestic form helps them go one better and they may be boosted by the fact that their recent signings Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis can be registered for the knockout stages of the competition. City will host the first leg on 11 February before travelling to the Bernabéu on 19 February.

Celtic’s first post-Christmas Champions League knockout match since 2012-13 will be the first leg against Bayern at Celtic Park on 12 February. Brendan Rodgers’ side go to Germany on 18 February. The teams have not met since two fixtures during the group stage in 2017-18.

The winners of each tie will play one of Atlético Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, who have already progressed to the round of 16 after finishing in the top eight of the league phase. Paris Saint-Germain, who joined City in edging through the league phase on Wednesday’s sprawling final match-day, face an all-French tie against surprise package Brest. In two ties pitching Serie A against the Eredivisie, Juventus play PSV Eindhoven while Milan meet Feyenoord.

Monaco will play Benfica while Sporting come up against a struggling Borussia Dortmund. A tie between Atalanta and Club Brugge completes the playoff pairings.

The playoff draw did not change the picture for Liverpool, Arsenal or Aston Villa, who are already through to the round of 16 in March and knew which four sides they could play. Liverpool face the winners of Brest v PSG or Monaco v Benfica, while Arsenal play the winners of Juventus v PSV or Feyenoord v Milan. Villa will come up against whoever prevails in either Sporting v Dortmund or Club Brugge v Atalanta.

Manchester United and Tottenham both escaped extra Europa League assignments after securing safe passage to the round of 16 with their respective victories on Thursday. They will both face either the winner of the playoff between AZ Alkmaar and Galatasaray, or the victor between Midtjylland and Real Sociedad. Rangers will meet the winners of either FC Twente v Bodø/Glimt or Fenerbahce v Anderlecht

Afenyo-Markin tried to normalise cronyism with his protocol comments – Donyina Mensah

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Executive Director of the Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA), Michael Donyina Mensah, has labelled Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin’s commentary about being given slots in the military as an act of corruption.

He averred that the lawmaker’s public pronouncement during the vetting of defence minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah was unfortunate.

During the vetting of the defence minister, Afenyo-Markin cautioned the Minister of Defence-designate against possibly denying him what he referred to as “a protocol allocation” due to the grilling.

“Let me remind you on a lighter note that the fact that I’m grilling you does not mean that when you get there [Ministry of Defence] and you are supposed to give protocol allocation, you deny me.”

“When I was a Defence Committee member, your ranking—your members benefitted. I am saying it on authority; they did, and they even had more than we, the NPP members,” Afenyo-Marking stated.

Donyina Mensah, in his remarks, called out the minority leader, stressing that demanding an allocation in the recruitment in the Ghana Armed Forces was corruption.

“During the defence minister’s vetting, the Minority Leader made some unfortunate remarks. We were extremely disappointed by his comments. “For a whole minority leader to make such reckless comments is terrible and seeks to normalise cronyism, and to a large extent, corruption,” he said on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline.

He said this is something that is not acceptable, and we must condemn it as much as we can.

Donyina Mensah added that the minority leader should have been responsible and avoided encouraging these kinds of reckless comments and influence-peddling activities.

Technology will be used to address passport acquisition concerns

0

The Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has pledged to leverage technology to streamline Ghana’s passport acquisition process, addressing long-standing challenges faced by applicants.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee, Ablakwa acknowledged widespread concerns about delays in obtaining passports and the influence of unauthorized middlemen, commonly known as “goro boys.”

Ablakwa assured the committee that under his leadership, digital solutions would be introduced to enhance the passport application process and eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.

“There are too many complaints about how difficult it is to get passports and to get them in good time. I have been going through some briefs, and I noticed that we have a backlog of over 70,000 passports that have not been collected. Then also the issues with the middlemen often referred to as ‘goro boys.’”

He referenced a previous instance where a former foreign minister stormed the passport office in frustration to demand an end to the long processing delays.

“I would like to use technology to reform our passport regime. I don’t think that we should still be requiring Ghanaians with Ghana Card to provide another biometric,” he stated.

Choose capable private partners for successful PPP – expert advises

0

By Issah Mohammed/Dorcas Stephens

Accra, Jan 31, GNA – Mr Vish Ashiagbor, a top management executive, says the successful execution of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement is hinged on choosing a capable private partner.

The Country Senior Partner for PwC Ghana, an audit firm, said it was important for governments to understand that while the provision of public infrastructure was motivated by societal impact, the motive of the private was profit.

Mr Ashiagbor was speaking at the Stanbic/Graphic Business breakfast meeting held on Tuesday on the theme, “Public-Private Partnership as a Financing Option for Sustainable Development.”

He urged the government to ensure that the selection of private partners for PPP was based on the capability and credential to provide value for money and provide public infrastructure that government would have otherwise provided with scarce resources.

“Private sector that is operating a service has to meet certain performance indicators based on which they are remunerated so they cannot go to sleep and not deliver their part of the bargain,” he said.

He noted that the government must be willing to provide the support needed which could be in the form of debt guarantees and regulations for private partners to work effectively and achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

“It is a contract. And as businesspeople, we know that even outside the contributions of the PPP, if you’re in a business contractual relationship, trust, communication, and shared authority are critical for the project to work,” he said.

Mrs Cynthia Ayebo Arthur, Acting Director, Public Investment and Asset Division, Ministry of Finance, said that continuous engagements and communication are essential to foster basic understanding on obligations and rights for public-private sector collaboration.

She noted that as the local private sector built capacities, government is becoming less reliant on external partners.

Madam De-Sylvia Boatemaa Asare, Acting Chief Operating Officer for Identity Management Systems, called for the strengthening of legal framework and improving risk assessment management to ensure that PPPs were successful.

Minority withdraws from Appointments Committee over Speaker’s ruling

0

In a dramatic turn of events, the Minority side of the Appointments Committee has recused themselves from the vetting proceedings, citing concerns over an earlier ruling by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, which called for the reconstitution of the committee.

The boycott was triggered after Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, raised the issue with Committee Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, referencing the Speaker’s directive.

The ruling followed the suspension of four MPs for two weeks due to misconduct during a chaotic session on Thursday, January 31, 2024.

The suspended members include the Majority and Minority Chief Whips, Frank Annoh-Dompreh and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

Afenyo-Markin argued that the vetting process should be suspended to allow for consultations with the Speaker regarding the committee’s reconstitution.

However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga countered that the Speaker had rescheduled the meeting for Monday, February 3, 2025, due to his current unavailability.

Despite Ayariga’s remarks, the Minority Leader maintained that the vetting should be halted in light of the Speaker’s ruling, standing firm on their decision to boycott the proceedings.

Ablakwa calls for renegotiation of DRIP amidst $100 million inflation concerns

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Jan 31, GNA – The Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to revisit and renegotiate the terms of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).

Mr Ablakwa’s call comes after he raised concerns during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday over the inflation of the project, allegedly by more than $100 million.

The DRIP, launched in August 2024 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Administration, aimed to enhance road maintenance and construction across all districts.

It is also to bolster the capacity of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) by equipping them with state-of-the-art machinery and providing essential technical training to local authorities.

Mr Ablakwa argued that despite the project’s noble objectives, its financial execution had allegedly been riddled with inefficiencies, potentially costing Ghana the much-needed resources.

Only 25 per cent of the total project cost had been paid, leaving substantial room for renegotiation, he said.

” … Mr Chairman, fortunately, only 25 per cent has been paid and not all the liabilities have been met, so I have encouraged the new Mahama Administration to renegotiate the DRIP so that we can save money because my conservative estimate is that it has been inflated by more than $100 million,” he stated.

The minister-designate emphasised the need for the Government, led by President Mahama, to act decisively in addressing the issue to safeguard public funds.

Mr Ablakwa highlighted the potential impact of recovering the “inflated funds,” which could be redirected to other critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and social intervention programmes.

The DRIP has been marred by controversy, with Mr Ablakwa uncovering an alleged $102 million inflation in the contract, which was awarded to J.A. Plantpool, a subsidiary of the Zoomlion conglomerate.

The contract was not awarded through a competitive process, but rather through a single-sourced deal, he said.

Mr Ablakwa’s call for renegotiation comes as Ghana struggles with economic challenges, including an IMF bailout.

He expressed the belief that recovering the “inflated funds” could make a significant difference in addressing the country’s economic challenges.

0

The Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured Ghanaians that no diplomatic property will be sold under his tenure if approved by Parliament.

Addressing concerns over the sale and mismanagement of Ghana’s diplomatic assets abroad, Ablakwa reaffirmed his commitment to protecting state properties during his vetting before the Appointments Committee.

“I am currently championing the Protection of State Assets Bill, which I have introduced in Parliament with bipartisan support. I cannot be seen endorsing the sale of any diplomatic property.”

“I make this pledge—under my watch, no diplomatic asset will be sold. Rather, they will be safeguarded,” he stated when he appeared before the Appointments Committee on Friday January 31, 2025.

I’ll champion climate-resistant initiatives – Issifu Seidu

0

Issifu Seidu, the Minister-designate for Climate Change and Sustainability, has committed to introducing climate-resistant initiatives aimed at safeguarding vulnerable communities and sectors in Ghana.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, 2025, Seidu emphasised the urgent need for strategic interventions to address the mounting impacts of climate change on Ghana’s economy and environment.

During his appearance before the committee, Seidu highlighted the pervasive impact of global climate trends, which he noted have significantly disrupted key state institutions and economic sectors, including agriculture, energy, and forestry.

Seidu identified agriculture as one of the most vulnerable sectors in Ghana. He explained how unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and increased flooding have placed a strain on farmers and disrupted food security.

Additionally, the forestry sector has faced severe deforestation challenges, further exacerbated by climate change, while the energy sector has encountered challenges due to erratic weather conditions impacting hydropower generation.

“If I am given the nod what I will do is to support the existing ministries to come up with initiatives that will target the perennial flooding that we have. We need to have climate-resistant initiatives so that we can target the vulnerable institutions that we have.

“The vulnerable sectors of the economy are the agricultural sector, the energy sector, forestry and we need to come out with climate resistant initiatives to save our environment.”

The Paris Climate Agreement, signed by nearly 200 nations, commits countries to limit global temperature rises to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C. Seidu acknowledged the importance of Ghana’s continued commitment to such agreements but stressed the need for practical, on-the-ground implementation of climate policies to achieve meaningful change.

The Minister-designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has dismissed claims from state security reports suggesting that he was once a member of TESCON while studying at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Appearing before the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025, the NDC MP described the claim as an “unfortunate lie.”

During the vetting, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that, as part of the Committee’s due diligence, state security reports indicated that Sam George was a former TESCON member.

When asked to clarify, Sam George vehemently refuted the claim, insisting that he had never been associated with the student wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“This is one of the reasons I have consistently maintained that the new Mahama administration must overhaul our entire state security apparatus. It is woefully ineffective if it claims I was a TESCON member,” he remarked.

Alban Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has suspended four Members of Parliament (MPs) for two weeks following the chaotic incident that occurred during Thursday’s vetting of ministerial nominees by the Appointments Committee.

The suspended MPs include the two chief Whips for both the Minority and Majority caucuses, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

The speaker made it clear that such behaviour would not be tolerated and warned of further action should similar incidents arise in the future.

During his statement, he expressed his disappointment over the actions of the MPs involved.

He emphasised that their conduct was unbecoming of Members of Parliament and said the incident had brought shame to the legislative body.

He further explained that the suspension was necessary to maintain order and discipline within the parliamentary proceedings, which he said had been severely undermined by the actions of the MPs.

He also alluded to the possibility of additional consequences if such disruptions continue.

He assured the public that Parliament would take a firm stand against any actions that could harm its reputation and disrupt its work.

Bagbin suspends Majority and Minority Chief Whips over vetting chaos

0

In an unprecedented move, Members of Parliament involved in the violent clashes during the Appointments Committee sitting on Thursday, January 30 have been suspended for two weeks.

The decision, announced by Speaker Alban Bagbin on Friday, January 31, 2025, intimated it is an indication of Parliament’s strong stance against misconduct and breaches of decorum among lawmakers.

The incidents in question occurred on the evening of Thursday, January 30, and the morning of Friday, January 31.

The suspension affects key figures from both caucuses, including Chief Whips Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor of the Majority and Frank Annoh-Dompreh of the Minority, alongside Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

“These people are suspended from Parliament for two weeks from today,” Speaker Bagbin ruled decisively during Friday’s sitting.

The violent altercations reportedly stemmed from disagreements during the vetting process at the Appointments Committee, where tensions over political affiliations and appointments boiled over into physical confrontations.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the incidents involved verbal spats that escalated into shoving, threats, and damage to parliamentary property.

In response to the alarming events, Speaker Bagbin outlined a series of measures aimed at addressing the immediate fallout and preventing future occurrences.

1. Suspension of MPs Involved: The two-week suspension is intended to serve as a disciplinary action against those directly involved in the altercations. The suspended members are barred from participating in parliamentary sittings and activities during this period.

2. Criminal Complaint to the Police: The Clerk of Parliament has been directed to formally lodge a criminal complaint with the police. This will pave the way for a full investigation into the incidents, ensuring that those found culpable face legal consequences.

3. Reconstitution of the Appointments Committee: The Committee of Selection has been instructed to reconstitute the Appointments Committee. This move is aimed at restoring trust and ensuring that the Committee operates effectively and without bias.

4. Assessment of Property Damage: The Clerk of Parliament has also been tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused to parliamentary property during the confrontations. MPs found responsible for the destruction will be surcharged to cover the costs of repairs or replacements.

5. Seven-Member Investigative Committee: A seven-member committee, chaired by Emmanuel Bedzrah, has been established to investigate the incidents in detail.

The committee has been given a 10-day deadline to submit its findings and recommendations for further action.

The Minority side of the Appointments Committee has withdrawn from the vetting process of ministerial nominees expressing concerns over a previous decision by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin that demanded the committee be reconstituted.

Referencing the Speaker’s order, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin brought up the matter with Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor, which set off the boycott.

The decision came after four MPs were suspended for two weeks on Friday, January 31, 2024, for misbehavior during a tumultuous session.

Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib are among the suspended members, along with Frank Annoh-Dompreh and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority and Minority Chief Whips.

Afenyo-Markin contended that the vetting procedure need to be halted in order to have discussions with the Speaker regarding the committee’s reconstitution.

The Speaker had rescheduled the meeting for Monday, February 3, 2025, because he was currently unavailable, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga said.

The Minority Leader remained steadfast in their intention to boycott the proceedings, arguing that the vetting should be stopped in light of the Speaker’s decision, despite Ayariga’s comments.

Treasury bills were oversubscribed in last week's auction Treasury bills were oversubscribed in last week’s auction

The government aims to borrow GH¢6.527 billion in the upcoming treasury bill auction today, January 31, 2025.

For the fourth consecutive week, the government recorded a massive oversubscription in its treasury bill auction held on January 24, 2025.

The auction received total bids amounting to GH¢8.162 billion, exceeding the target of GH¢6.001 billion by GH¢2.161 billion.

According to results released by the Bank of Ghana on January 27, 2025, out of the GH¢8.162 billion bids tendered, the government accepted GH¢4.479 billion for the 91-day bill, GH¢1.756 billion for the 182-day bill, and GH¢1.927 billion for the 365-day bill. However, not all bids in the auction were accepted.

‘If My Wife Slaps My Mother, I Won’t Kick Her Out, I’ll Find Out Why First’ – Claims Relationship Coach

0

Relationship coach Daniel Kelly ignited a heated debate on The Toast show on GHOne, arguing that love in marriage should remain unconditional, even in the face of shocking conflicts.

According to Kelly, a marriage shouldn’t end simply because a spouse slaps their in-law. Instead of reacting with immediate divorce, he believes couples should focus on understanding what led to the act.

“When I say ‘I love you,’ I mean that the things I see, the things I’m going to discover, I’m sticking with you to make it work,” he explained.

Kelly stood firm in his opinion, saying , “If I slap your mother, are you leaving me? When it comes to marriage, why should everything be so conditional?”

For him, conflict resolution should always take priority over drastic measures. “If my wife slaps my mother, I am going to ask why. I’ll find out what led to it because simply sending her away doesn’t mean the next wife won’t do the same or worse.”

The discussion took another turn when the host asked, “What if your mother slaps your wife? What should you do?”

Kelly responded without hesitation: “Then what, should I send my mother away? Your mother will go to your husband’s house, no? There’s a thing called conflict resolution.”

He stressed that reacting emotionally instead of addressing the root cause could lead to even bigger issues. “You don’t just kick your wife out. If you don’t address the issue, what guarantees that the next wife won’t do worse, maybe even kill your mother?”

Ablakwa discharged amid Afenyo-Markin’s disagreement with Ahiafor over Speaker’s directive

0

The vetting of Foreign Affairs Minister-nominee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday took an unexpected turn following a disagreement between Ranking Member, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Committee Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, over a directive from the Speaker of Parliament.

During the session which dragged into the evening, it emerged that the Speaker had reconstituted the Appointments Committee after dismissing four members, including Members of Parliament, in response to the chaotic events that unfolded during a late-night sitting on Thursday.

Afenyo-Markin apologises to Ablakwa and wife

0

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has rendered an unqualified apology to the Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his wife over remarks made during a press conference regarding the vetting process.

During a press briefing on Friday, January 31, the Minority caucus accused the Majority side of secretly facilitating the vetting of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Kwabena Mintah Akandoh without their knowledge.

In his remarks, Afenyo-Markin had claimed that Ablakwa was not scheduled to be vetted on Thursday but had “smuggled himself in” with the help of his Majority colleagues.

He further alleged that Ablakwa’s wife was also smuggled into the vetting room—a comment that Ablakwa later stated his wife did not take lightly.

However, during Ablakwa’s vetting session, Afenyo-Markin took a moment to personally apologize for any unintended offence caused, particularly to Ablakwa’s wife.

“Let me unconditionally apologise to your wife for how my press statement came about and how she felt. I would feel bad if somebody said something about my own wife. It is fair because it is not an official matter.

“I am sorry to your wife, dear, and for how my press conference was carried. I also say sorry to you. I have the utmost respect for you, and I will be the last person to run you down. So, I am sorry, and I am sorry to your wife,” he stated.

Tenure of Kwesi Baffour Sarpong at Ghana Shippers’ Authority: A legacy of visionary excellence

0

The shipping and logistics industry is the lifeblood of global trade—an intricate network that ensures the seamless flow of goods across continents, connecting businesses, nations, and economies. In Ghana, this sector is not merely a cog in the wheel; it is a driving force, an engine that powers the nation’s economy and secures its position on the global stage.

As vital as it is, however, the industry requires more than just functionality; it demands transformative leadership—leaders who possess the vision, energy, passion and strategic acumen to navigate the complex tides of commerce and policy.

When Kwesi Baffour Sarpong was appointed by His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in November 2023 to lead the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), few could have predicted the scale of impact he would make. From the very first day of his tenure, Sarpong injected the GSA with an electrifying energy—driven by a bold vision for Ghana’s shipping industry, and manifested through a clear strategy for reform, and an unyielding belief in excellence.

His approach was not just about doing things differently; it was about doing things better—creating a legacy that would withstand operational challenges and the test of time; and elevate the standing of Ghana on the scene of global trade.

Sarpong’s drive quickly became apparent as he set in motion a series of high-impact reforms and infrastructural developments. The Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act 2024 (Act 1122), a cornerstone achievement, stands as a testament to his visionary thinking. This groundbreaking legislation, which amended the 50-year-old Establishment Law (NRCD 254) of the GSA, redefines the regulatory landscape of Ghana’s shipping sector.

Its passage was propelled by tremendous support from both Parliament and the Ministry of Transport, whose collaboration ensured the Act’s swift enactment. The new law establishes clear frameworks to govern commercial shipping activities, eliminate unfair practices at ports and borders, and create a competitive environment that benefits all stakeholders.

By enhancing the regulatory mandate over transit shipping, the amended law ensures greater efficiency across the logistics chain, providing a more transparent, efficient, and competitive platform for trade.

Sarpong’s vision, however, extended far beyond legal reforms. Under his leadership, infrastructure was revolutionized. The Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal (BILT), one of the most ambitious projects in the country’s logistics history, was brought to life with Phase 1 nearing completion ‘, and estimated to be completed by the end of the first quarter of the year.

This vital terminal promises to reshape the logistics landscape of the northern half of the country, improving road networks, storage facilities, and security zones to bolster the country’s trade capacity, especially with its landlocked neighbors, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. With full operations projected by 2026, BILT will be a game-changer for the region and for Ghana’s overall trade efficiency.

Simultaneously, Sarpong championed the perfection of land documentation to pave the way for the commencement of works for the Akatakyiwa Freight Park Project, strategically located at Yamoransa junction in the Central region, along the Accra-Takoradi highway.

This ambitious project is designed to cater to both transit cargo destined for landlocked countries and cargo flowing between Ghana’s southern and western regions. With truck parks, driver accommodations, restaurants, and workshops, it will serve as a vital hub for logistics services, enhancing Ghana’s standing as a trade facilitator in the region.

Sarpong’s leadership was not just about bold infrastructural projects or legislative triumphs—it was also about institutional growth and adapting to global industry trends. By the time the GSA marked its 50th anniversary, he spearheaded a major revisioning and repositioning initiative that realigned its mandate, vision, and mission with global standards of modern commercial shipping.

By streamlining the internal operations of GSA, and fostering greater collaboration with stakeholders of the sector, Sarpong laid a solid foundation for the GSA to adapt to the evolving dynamics of global trade. His commitment to building a culture of effective modern corporate governance, efficiency and service excellence has transformed the GSA into a model institution—one that serves as a beacon of professionalism in the industry.

Deservingly, His leadership has not gone unnoticed. Under his stewardship, the GSA earned the prestigious titles of Public Sector Company of the Year 2024 and Trade Facilitation Company of the Year 2024 at the Ghana Business Awards. These accolades are a reflection of the Authority’s extraordinary contributions to the shipping and logistics sector, and they stand as a testament to Sarpong’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

As Kwesi Baffour Sarpong moves on to pursue other interests, he leaves behind an institution that has been fundamentally reshaped and elevated to global standards of excellence. Highlife musician Akwaboah has credited his senior colleague Kojo Antwi for inspiring him to start his “Shades of Love” Valentine’s Day concert.

In an interview on Hitz FM on January 30, 2025, Akwaboah acknowledged the huge impact of Kojo Antwi’s annual December 24 show, which played a key role in motivating him to create his own event.

“I looked at those who were ahead of me, a person like Kojo Antwi. He had a December 24th event that he does, and I wanted something like that for myself.

“I wouldn’t always want to depend on a promoter or someone to call me for an event, but I can host my own event. This year will be the 7th year,” he said.

Akwaboah also shared an interesting insight into the creative process behind composing his popular hit song, Hye Me Bo.

“Some will say it comes with the vibe. But if you are going to write songs like Hye Me Bo, where you need to talk and get deep into your emotions, it can take you a month or two, sometimes even a year.

“If the lines don’t make sense, I leave it and come back to it to make sure that the first lines go with the second. It took a year for me to put Hye Me Bo together,” he explained.

Movement for Change condemns chaos during vetting

Alan Kyerematen, leader of Movement for Change Alan Kyerematen, leader of Movement for Change

The Movement for Change has strongly criticised the violent altercations that transpired between Members of Parliament on the Appointments Committee, during the scheduled vetting of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

The party, in a statement issued on January 31, 2025, expressed deep concern over the destruction of state properties during the scuffle, calling the act irresponsible and one which disrespects Ghanaians.

“The Movement for Change strongly condemns the disgraceful scuffle that erupted in Parliament during the vetting of Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

“Even more concerning is the fact that, in the course of this altercation, Members of Parliament engaged in the destruction of state property an act that is not only irresponsible but also an affront to the people of Ghana, whose taxes fund the functioning of our democratic institutions,” it stated.

The statement further urged Parliament to uphold decorum, political tolerance, and accountability.

“Parliament, as the highest legislative body, has a solemn duty to foster a culture of political tolerance, mutual respect, and accountability. It must lead by example in shaping a political environment that encourages diverse viewpoints and upholds democratic values,” it stated.

The Movement for Change warned that such incidents undermine public trust in the legislature’s ability to lead responsibly.

“The recent altercation, however, does the exact opposite: it weakens the faith and fidelity of the Ghanaian people in Parliament’s ability to provide the responsible leadership required to advance national progress,” the statement added.

It, however, called on lawmakers to engage in meaningful debates, rather than resorting to physical confrontations, while urging Parliament to set a higher standard for democratic governance.

“The Movement for Change urges all Members of Parliament to uphold the principles of decorum, constructive engagement, and adherence to the rule of law. Ghana’s democracy thrives when its leaders engage in meaningful debate, not physical confrontations and the destruction of public property.

“We further call on the government, particularly Parliament, to spearhead efforts in building a political culture that tolerates differing opinions, promotes national unity, and reinforces the accountability of leadership,” it added.

Vetting: I dislike inhumane treatment to Ghanaians during visa acquisition — Ablakwa

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, Jan. 31, GNA – Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Foreign Affairs Minister-designate, has expressed misgivings about the manner Foreign Missions subject Ghanaians to inhumane treatments during visa acquisitions.

The nominee observed that there had been instances where noble and responsible Ghanaians who applied for visa at the various embassies or missions were left at the vagaries of unfriendly weather.

The Minister-designate expressed these sentiments when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday for vetting.

“I don’t like the way Foreign Missions treat our citizens during visa acquisition. It’s a major issue I’ll tackle and stand up for the rights of Ghanaians,” Mr Ablakwa assured.

The nominee said, when given the nod, he would advocate the establishment of a Presidential Travel Policy as a cost saving measure to avert profligate expenditure.

Responding to his activities with the Operation Recovery All Loots (ORAL), Mr Ablakwa said the ORAL’s operations had saved the nation 20 bungalows and that its reports would soon be handed over to President John Mahama for the next line of action.

The nominee expressed the optimism that the discoveries made by the ORAL would aid the Attorney-General’s Office to prosecute the suspects in the coming days.

The nominee said Ghana would use her economic diplomacy to address youth unemployment through regulated migration of Ghanaian artisans and professionals to work abroad.

To that end, Ghana would sign bilateral agreements with nations to export her artisans and professionals, including medical doctors, nurses, mid-wives, technicians and teachers to work outside and pay a token to the nation.

Responding to the President’s appointment of Lieutenant Colonel (rtd) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey as an Envoy to the Sahel State, the Minister-designate, said the appointment was a “strategic national interest” to maintain its diplomatic relations with its neighbours.

“Ghana’s foreign policy interest is to remain “friends of all and enemies of none,” the nominee emphasised.

Mr Ablakwa said he would advocate the establishment of a Consular Fund for the Foreign Service staff to support Ghanaians in the diaspora who may find themselves in distress, upon approval.

Ghana, he said, would also task her foreign ambassadors through clear key performance indicators to attract investors to the country.

Government must avoid another debt restructuring – IEA

0

Government plans to prevent second debt restructuring Government plans to prevent second debt restructuring

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), a public policy think-tank, has cautioned the government against another debt restructuring by deliberately raising more revenue and being fiscally responsible.

The policy think-tank said being prudent with expenditure would inspire investor confidence as the economy rebounds amid the implementation of the IMF US$3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

The IEA said this in its bi-monthly Economic Outlook for November to December 2024, with the expectation that the 2025 Budget, would sustain macroeconomic stabilisation efforts in line with the IMF programme.

Ghana completed its domestic debt restructuring in February 2023, achieving about 85 per cent exchange and 98 per cent exchange on the country’s US$13 billion external debt restructuring with Eurobond holders in October 2024.

“The 2025 budget is expected to conform generally to the programme. Moving along this path is necessary to avoid another painful debt restructuring, while engendering investor confidence in the economy.”

The Institute noted that the government’s intention to abolish the e-levy, COVID-19 tax, emissions tax and betting tax, would ease the burden on the few tax-paying households and businesses.

“The resulting loss in revenue is expected to be offset by reinforced efforts to plug the numerous tax loopholes, broaden the tax net and strengthen tax administration, among other measures,” it stated.

It, however, indicated that “resuming the debt service will put pressure on the budget and the exchange rate,” and called for measures to compensate the effects of the external debt repayment.

The policy think-tank said the 2025 budget should recognise the lack of fiscal space to support economic development due to limited Government revenue and take steps to increase the tax intake.

“It will be important also to recognise the potential of the natural resource sector to provide resources for development. Tapping this potential will require changes to the natural resource fiscal regimes towards increasing Ghanaian ownership and benefits,” the Institute said.

It also called for local value-addition to the country’s natural resources by giving priority to the processing and manufacturing sectors to increase revenues from that sector.

Meanwhile, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minister of Finance, has tasked the revenue mobilisation and expenditure agencies, to ensure a balance between increasing revenue and government spending.

He made this call during his first working visit to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Controller and Accountant-Generals Department (CAGD), last Thursday.

“As part of the IMF agreement, this year, we may have to do additional tax revenue of 0.6 per cent of GDP [Gross Domestic Product] … your work is to ensure that whatever we ask you to pay, you review it and if it meets your law,” he told the two agencies.

Open governance needed to curb misinformation

0

Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on African governments to embrace open governance as a strategy to combat misinformation and disinformation.

During his vetting on January 31, Ablakwa stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, stating that access to credible information would empower citizens and prevent them from being misled.

“I think that African leaders should become conscious of the new age, new media, and we should encourage more transparency. My view is that if African leaders and African governments adopt an open governance architecture, if they are more transparent and accountable, then the people will know. Knowledge is power, so it will not be easy for the people to be misled,” he said.

He noted that access to information remains a challenge on the continent, despite Ghana passing the Right to Information (RTI) Act, adding that its implementation still has much to be desired.

Ablakwa also condemned the misuse of media platforms for spreading disinformation, urging regulatory bodies to take action against those responsible.

“Our regulatory bodies should clamp down on those who are misusing the media for disinformation, misinformation, and the creation of fake accounts. Unfortunately, even governments on the continent are responsible. They have these fake factories and pay people to disseminate fake information.”

Refuting claims that he had deleted his previous Facebook posts, Ablakwa reaffirmed his commitment to his principles and dismissed the allegation as an example of fake news.

“On my way to this vetting, messages were circulating that I had deleted my Facebook posts, which is not true. I am not a coward, I stand by my convictions. I am a conviction politician. Fake news is a real problem, and I think that social media has come to stay, so let’s encourage more open and transparent governance,” he concluded.
