Atlantic Lithium Limited, the African-focused lithium exploration company aiming to develop Ghana’s first lithium mine, has responded to recent media speculation regarding the status of its Ewoyaa Mining Lease.

In a statement released yesterday, the company confirmed that discussions with Ghanaian government agencies are ongoing as both parties work toward finalizing the lease ratification and advancing the Ewoyaa Lithium Project.

The Ewoyaa project, a cornerstone of Atlantic Lithium’s strategy, is poised to become a significant contributor to Ghana’s mining sector and the global lithium supply chain. The company emphasized its commitment to collaborating with the Ghanaian government and other stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.

“We are pleased with the progress made so far and remain dedicated to working closely with the Government of Ghana and all relevant parties to move the Ewoyaa Lithium Project forward,” the company stated. Atlantic Lithium also assured shareholders that updates on the project’s development would be provided as key milestones are achieved.

The statement was authorized by Amanda Harsas, Finance Director and Company Secretary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, underscoring the company’s transparency and commitment to keeping investors informed.

The Ewoyaa project has garnered significant attention as global demand for lithium—a critical component in electric vehicle batteries—continues to surge. Once operational, the mine is expected to bolster Ghana’s economy while positioning the country as a key player in the green energy transition.

Atlantic Lithium’s announcement comes amid heightened interest in Africa’s lithium potential, with several nations on the continent emerging as hotspots for mineral exploration. The company’s proactive engagement with Ghanaian authorities reflects its strategic focus on ensuring regulatory compliance and fostering strong partnerships to unlock the project’s full potential.

Shareholders and industry observers will be watching closely for further updates as Atlantic Lithium navigates the final stages of the lease ratification process and moves closer to bringing Ghana’s first lithium mine into production.

Our equipment are under threat – Tema ECG appeals to community leaders

0

The Tema South District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has engaged community opinion leaders under its jurisdiction and called on them to support the power distribution company to protect its assets.

The call was made by the District Manager, Horace Nkansah, who mentioned that some of the company’s substations had been turned into refuse dump, a situation which he says impacts negatively on work and power supply.

The meeting was held at the District’s office on Tuesday, February 4.

Mr Nkansah also indicated that there is an alarming incidence of fuse theft, a situation which affects the power supply and keeps affected customers without electricity for a while.

The community leaders expressed their concerns, most of which were about stable power supply and low voltage situations.

On these, they were informed that though some outages are from the company, some are also through faults and problems caused by unscrupulous people.

“If, for instance, there is a fuse theft and a transformer goes off, such an outage will not be from the company”, said Nkansah.

He added that “in situations where work has to be done at a substation, but upon reaching there, there are piles of refuse all over, it becomes difficult to attend to the problem immediately as the rubbish has to be cleared first.”

Horace Nkansah also bemoaned situations where some people break the padlocks to these substations and use the inner perimeter as their storage facility.

This situation, he said, is very alarming and can cause fatalities. He pleaded with the community leaders to help inform the community members to take their security seriously and to refrain from such acts.

The community leaders were generally appreciative of the district’s response to their challenges.

There is a WhatsApp platform made up of the community leaders and officials of the ECG Tema South District.

This platform provides an essential way for information flow between the stakeholders. This enables them to immediately inform.ECG of various challenges going on in the communities.

International journalist and producer Amma Prempeh recently showcased her documentary, Ghana’s first Kente Culture Story Documentary Film – “The Importance of Kente to Ghanaians and Black Africans,” at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.

The screening, held on February 3, 2025, kick started Black History Month celebrations and was hosted by Dr Adjei-Associate Vice President of Indigenous Research Memorial University, Canada.

This screening follows the documentary’s premiere on 26th August 2023 in Kumasi, Ghana at the golden eagle cinema and 10th September, 2023 at the African Regent Hotel and its subsequent growing recognition.

Amma Prempeh’s self-funded documentary delves into the origins, intricate artistry, captivating history, and enduring beauty of Ghana’s Kente fabric.

It highlights how Kente weaving supports a significant portion of Ghana’s economy and the communities dedicated to preserving its history, development, and commercial aspects.

Following the screening, students engaged in a Q & A discussion with Amma Prempeh and Mr Osei-Bonsu Safo-Kantanka, a monarchical historian from the Asante Kingdom’s Manhyia Palace.

Safo-Kantanka, an expert on Kente cloth, provided further insights into the fabric’s cultural significance.

As the granddaughter of Ashanti King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Amma Prempeh brings a unique perspective to the film, which explores the evolution of Kente from its origins to its current status as a symbol of Ghanaian national pride.

The documentary also touches on how Kente’s popularity has expanded beyond its royal and fashionable applications to encompass human rights activism.

Kente weaving, which stems from cultural traditions of the Ashanti, Volta, and Northern regions of Ghana, was officially recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage during the 19th session in Paraguay on December 4, 2024.

The fabric’s durability, complex designs, and aesthetic appeal contribute to its rich symbolism and diverse interpretations, representing not only Black identity but also broader African concepts.

Speaking to journalists after the screening of the Kente Film at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Amma Prempeh said, “I’m excited about this opportunity to bring Ghana to Canada and the world through my documentary ‘Importance of Kente to Ghanaians and Black Africans’.

“Over the year’s I was inspired to put together this film because I realized the growing popularity among black Africans around the world and most of them had not the slighted knowledge about this iconic fabric from Ghana. I’m really happy that I have the chance to share the history, the concepts and the origin of Kente with the world.

“I would also like to take this moment to thank God for how far He’s brought me in this project, my amazing mum Mrs Mabel Prempeh, my brother Emanuel N K Prempeh, the entire Prempeh family, my late father Mr Kwasi Prempeh whom I am sure is cheering me on from heaven along with my late brother Edusei Prempeh, my friends and amazing high-profile casts and production team who encouraged me and pushed me on when I encountered some storms in making this film. I am glad I got to the finish line and the film is gaining positive feedback”.

Memorial University of Newfoundland, established in 1925 is the largest university in Atlantic Canada and the sole university in Newfoundland and Labrador.

This public research university, based in St. John’s, has additional campuses in several locations and offers a wide range of programs from certificates and diplomas to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees, including online courses.

Adams Calls for Continued Digital Tax Push

0

Former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams has called on the government to maintain its focus on digital solutions to further enhance the country’s tax revenue performance.

Contributing to a statement on digital fraud in Parliament today, Dr. Adams underscored the significant role that digital platforms have played in improving revenue collection and boosting tax compliance.

“The impact of digitalisation on our revenue performance is clear in the numbers we are now seeing,” Mr. Adams said.

He pointed to key technological measures implemented under his tenure, including the Ghana.gov payment platform, the Electronic VAT (E-VAT) system, and the I-Cons platform.

These innovations, according to the former Minister, have been instrumental in increasing the efficiency of revenue collection.

He also referenced a 2022 report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which revealed that Ghana’s tax-to-GDP ratio stood at 30.8%, well below the government’s target of 18% by 2027.

However, Dr. Adams emphasized that the country has made remarkable progress over the past two years.

By the end of 2024, Ghana’s tax-to-GDP ratio had increased to 17%, up from 13.8% in 2022.

“This is a significant achievement,” Adams remarked. He highlighted the leap from GH₵75 billion in tax revenue to GH₵154 billion, noting that these gains were largely the result of digital tools and systems that had been put in place.

“The digital solutions we implemented directly contributed to doubling our revenue collection and improving our tax-to-GDP ratio,” he added.

Dr. Adams urged the new Minister for Finance to continue pushing these digital tax initiatives to achieve the 18% target as early as this year, rather than waiting until 2027.

“If we can increase the tax-to-GDP ratio by 3.2 percentage points in two years, hitting that final 1% increase this year is entirely achievable,” he said.

Dr. Adams also outlined a series of measures required to advance the digitalisation of the tax system, including faceless tax assessments, digital tax record-keeping, and simplifying tax processes to improve compliance.

In addition, Dr. Adams called for greater support for local tech companies that have contributed to developing digital tax solutions over the last three years.

“These local firms have been key to our progress, and we should continue to support them with a local content policy to ensure that we source technology solutions from Ghanaian companies,” he stated.

Concluding his speech, Dr. Adams reaffirmed the importance of digitalisation for Ghana’s economic growth.

He drew attention to remarks made by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the Africa Prospective Dialogue, where he emphasized that digitalisation is essential for Africa’s economic transformation.

“This is a vindication of the efforts Dr. Bawumia has championed to ensure digitalisation becomes a driver of economic progress for Ghana,” the former minister said.

Galamsey operator convicted for stealing from a drinking bar

A 32-year-old galamsey operator held for unlawful entry, causing damage and stealing, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment in hard labour by the Tarkwa District Court One.

Amadu Amidu alias ‘Attah’ pleaded guilty to all the charges levelled against him and was convicted accordingly.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh, told the court presided over by Mr Charles Owusu Nsiah, that the complainant Daniel Cobbinah, was a businessman resident at Cyanide, a suburb of Tarkwa.

He said on November 28, 2024, at about 3:20 am, the complainant received a phone call that someone was seen entering his drinking bar located at the Tarkwa Railway Station.

He said the complainant went to the scene and saw that several people had converged around his bar, and he observed that the trap door leading to the bar had been destroyed.

Sergeant Assan-Donkoh said the complainant entered the bar and with the help of some residents arrested Amidu and took him to the Railway Station police post.

The prosecution said the complainant detected that the trap door valued at GH¢500 and four jackpot machines valued at GH¢14,000 were damaged and coins amounting to GH¢ 800 which were inside the machines had been stolen.

He said the complainant officially complained to the police and Amidu was detained to assist in investigations.

The court heard that Amidu in his caution statement alleged he gave the money in the Jackpot machine (coins) to the complainant, but he denied it, and after investigations, the convict was charged with the offence and put before the Court.

Debt exchange won’t stall infrastructure development

0

In spite of challenges presented by Ghana’s Debt Exchange Program (DDEP), President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to finishing important infrastructure projects under the Synohydro Program.

During his “Thank You Tour” in the Western Region on February 5, 2025, President Mahama gave an update on the nation’s attempts to restructure its debt and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting the development of vital infrastructure.

Major projects like the Takoradi Interchange, the Agona Dualization Project, and important road developments in the Nzema enclave would continue, he promised, thanks to ongoing talks with official and commercial creditors.

In addition to road infrastructure, Mahama highlighted plans to increase railway connections along the western corridor to improve the movement of manganese and bauxite to the port of Takoradi, increasing the area’s industrial capacity.

“Ghana has been involved in a Debt Exchange Programme, and the DDEP has affected the projects that were packaged under the Synohydro Programme. We currently have finished negotiations with the official creditors and are soon to start negotiations with commercial creditors.

“I believe that this will pave the way for us to continue the Takoradi Interchange Project. We will also look at the Agona-dualisation project. And also, the Nzema enclave roads.

“We will also look at the railways to expand the connections from the Railways along the western corridors in order that we can haug bauxite and manganese to Takoradi ports.”

‘GPL Will Move On Without Asante Kotoko’

0

General manager of the Millennium Marathon, Ernest Boamah has cautioned the Asante Kotoko football club to be mindful of their statements regarding the recent incident in the Bono Region.

Speaking during yesterday’s edition of Guide Sports Xtra, Ernest Boamah said, “The GPL will continue
without interruption”, despite the recent tragic incident involving Asante Kotoko fans. While the club is understandably shaken and calling for justice, the authorities have assured that the necessary steps are being taken to address the situation.”

Mr. Buamah assured Ghanaians that the GFA and the police are acting swiftly, with arrests made and investigations ongoing.

He stated that Kotoko will continue to play football, emphasizing that the league cannot be held hostage by a single club’s demands.

The General manager argued that Kotoko should be cautious in its statements, as the league can function without them.

“Football has faced similar incidents in the past, and the focus should be on finding solutions to prevent such tragedies from happening again, rather than threatening to withdraw.

The GPL will move forward, with or without Asante Kotoko. The authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all involved, paving the way for the league to continue its course,” he added.

July 1 to become a public holiday again under Mahama’s leadership

0

President John Mahama has declared his plan to make July 1 a formal public holiday again, giving it the same importance as Ghana’s Senior Citizens Day and Republic Day.

In order to provide Ghanaians a chance to show gratitude for the country’s advancements, President Mahama suggested that July 1 be designated as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving during his Thank You tour to the Western Region on Wednesday, February 5.

“We will have the opportunity as a nation soon to pray and give thanks to the Almighty God, as enjoined by the Holy Book that says, ‘In all things, give thanks,’” he stated.

Mr. Mahama declared that he would designate a committee of religious leaders to supervise the event’s preparations in order to guarantee a well-planned observance.

He also affirmed that in order to reinstate July 1 as a statutory holiday, changes to the Public Holidays Act will be submitted to Parliament.

“We will soon present to Parliament amendments to the Public Holidays Act in order that we can restore July 1 as a holiday.”

“In the amendments of the Republic Holidays Act, we shall also make provisions to fulfill our promise to the Muslim community of an extra holiday to mark the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr,” President Mahama said.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two additional suspects in connection with the violent disturbances that occurred during the football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC.

The suspects, Isaac Ofosu and Yeboah Augustine, are currently in police custody and assisting with the ongoing investigation.

This brings the total number of suspects arrested to five in relation to the incident, which took place on February 2, 2025, in Nsoatre, Bono Region.

An intelligence-led operation is still underway to apprehend the remaining perpetrators to ensure they face justice.

In response to the violence, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken swift action by banning Nsoatreman FC from using Nana Koramansah Park as their home venue. Bagbin didn’t suspend vetting chaos hearing; Minority orchestrated it – Bedzrah

0

The Chairman of the special committee investigating the vetting chaos, Emmanuel Bedzrah, has clarified that the suspension of the public hearing was not ordered by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin but was orchestrated by the Minority.

On Wednesday, February 5, the committee suspended its proceedings indefinitely. Announcing the suspension, Bedzrah initially stated that it was based on directives from the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who indicated that the Speaker would provide further instructions on the committee’s sessions.

However, in an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Bedzrah provided further clarification, stating that the Minority played a key role in the decision to halt proceedings.

“Let me say that the Speaker was not in the know at all. As a matter of fact, after what happened at the committee sitting, I decided to meet with the Clerk and the two leadership, including the Deputy Speakers, at the Speaker’s lobby.

“So when I got there, I was told the Speaker had given instruction, so I called the Speaker because the Speaker has traveled, and they all said that they were not able to get in touch with the Speaker on phone,” Bedzrah explained.

He continued, “They said they spoke to the Speaker, and the Speaker directed that we should, since they have apologised, hold on to this. And I said no, this is not the instruction I received from the Speaker.

“Everybody heard the Speaker yesterday that the Clerk should continue with its work, so I called the Speaker, and he said he has not given any instruction that we should stop. So in the chaos, we decided that well, we had already suspended, and the way forward is to allow the Speaker to return and give specific instruction.”

Bedzrah emphasised that the suspension was orchestrated by the Minority.

“Honestly, this whole stoppage came from the Minority side. I can tell you on authority,” he stated.

Ghanaian scholar leads research to bridge green space inequality in urban areas

0

In rapidly urbanising cities, green spaces have become a luxury rather than a necessity, leaving many communities without access to parks and recreational areas.

However, a Ghanaian scholar is on a mission to change this. Rexford Osei Owusu, a doctoral student in Metropolitan Planning, Policy, and Design at the University of Utah, USA, is conducting groundbreaking research to address the disparities in access to urban green spaces.

His work not only highlights the environmental and social benefits of these spaces but also provides actionable solutions to bridge the gap between supply and demand, particularly in underserved communities.

Originally from Ghana, Osei Owusu is an alumnus of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and furthered his education with an MSc. in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

His research journey began with his thesis, “Urban Green in Deprived Areas: The Match Between Supply of and Demand for Ecosystem Services of Urban Green Spaces – The Case of Kumasi, Ghana”.

This work, now published in the journal Environmental Science & Policy under the title “Supply and Demand of Ecosystem Services of Urban Green Spaces in Deprived Areas: Perceptions from Kumasi, Ghana”, sheds light on the inequities in urban green space distribution and the challenges faced by communities with limited access to these essential resources.

Focusing on Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, Osei Owusu’s research combines field surveys, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, and stakeholder interviews to assess how urban green spaces meet the needs of the local population in deprived areas.

His findings reveal a significant mismatch between the supply of ecosystem services—such as air quality improvement, recreational opportunities, and temperature regulation—and the growing demand from rapidly urbanizing communities.

Many of these communities, already struggling with environmental issues and limited public spaces, find themselves further disadvantaged due to poor planning and inequitable distribution of green infrastructure.

Recognising the transformative role that well-planned green spaces can play in urban areas, Osei Owusu is advocating for policies that prioritise equitable access to these essential resources.

His research underscores the need for participatory urban planning, where local communities have a say in the design and management of green spaces.

He believes that by aligning the supply of green spaces with actual community needs, cities like Kumasi can become healthier, more resilient, and better equipped to address environmental challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

But for Osei Owusu, research alone is not enough. His vision extends beyond academic discussions to real-world implementation.

Drawing inspiration from local government initiatives and international best practices, he is pushing for practical solutions such as restoring degraded parks, integrating green infrastructure into informal settlements, and promoting community-led urban greening initiatives.

These efforts, he believes, can serve as a blueprint for sustainable urban development not just in Ghana but across sub-Saharan Africa, where many cities face similar challenges.

His work highlights the urgent need to shift the narrative around urban green spaces from being a privilege to being recognized as a fundamental right.

By addressing systemic inequalities in access to these spaces, Osei Owusu is paving the way for more inclusive and sustainable urban environments.

His research serves as a call to action for urban planners, policymakers, and community leaders to rethink how cities are designed and ensure that no community is left behind in the push for greener, healthier urban spaces.

Five Men Sentenced To Death For Witchcraft Murder In Nigeria

0

Five men have been sentenced to death by hanging for the brutal murder of 67-year-old Dahare Abubakar, whom they accused of witchcraft.

The attack occurred while Ms. Abubakar was working on her farm, where she was beaten and stabbed to death.

The incident took place in a village 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Kano, Nigeria’s largest city.

Following the murder, Ms. Abubakar’s family reported the crime to authorities, leading to the swift arrest of the suspects.

The case has drawn national attention and sparked discussions about the ongoing violence in rural areas linked to witchcraft accusations.

Individuals making such claims often believe that those they accuse are responsible for family deaths, illnesses, or misfortunes.

In his ruling, Judge Usman Na’abba stated that the prosecution had proven its case against the five men beyond reasonable doubt.

Prosecutor Abba Sorondiki expressed hope that the judgment would deter others from making wrongful accusations and resorting to violence.

The court heard that the victim was murdered after Abdulaziz Yahaya, one of the accused, claimed his sick wife had a dream in which Ms. Abubakar pursued her with a knife.

Following this dream, Yahaya organized a group to confront Ms. Abubakar, leading to her tragic death.

“This is the first time we are seeing up to five people sentenced to death for murder over wrongful witchcraft accusations,” Sorondiki told the BBC.

Musa Yahaya, the victim’s son, described the day of his mother’s murder as the worst of his life but expressed relief at the verdict.

“I am happy because they would get the same treatment they meted out to my mother,” he said.

Defense lawyer Ma’aruf Yakasai announced plans to appeal the verdict.

Volta Regional Minister pledges to revamp tourist sites to boost local economy

0

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has reiterated his commitment to revitalizing tourist sites in the region as part of efforts to stimulate the local economy and create job opportunities for the youth.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Mr. Gunu highlighted the region’s vast tourism potential, emphasizing the need for strategic collaboration to unlock its economic benefits.

He underscored the critical role tourism could play in providing employment for the region’s youth, reducing rural-to-urban migration in search of non-existent jobs.

“The tourism sector, is another priority, a major one, fortunately, in these two sectors Roads and Highways Ministry and Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Ministry], we have the ministers coming from the Volta region, I’m going to collaborate more with them to develop the tourist sites so that we can rake in a lot of revenue, to improve the local economy of the region, create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth so that they won’t be travelling or migrating to the capital searching for non-existing jobs, that we are going to do.”

He assured residents that the government would work diligently to ensure the region becomes a premier tourist destination in Ghana.

The Volta Region is home to numerous scenic attractions, including the Wli Waterfalls, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, and the iconic Mount Afadjato, among others.

However, many of these sites have faced challenges such as poor infrastructure and inadequate investment, limiting their potential to attract tourists.

Outrage on social media over ‘daughter of murderer comment’ by NPP MP

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and her late father Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and her late father Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings

A comment made by a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority caucus, and directed at the Member of Parliament of Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, which has been described as unsavoury, has triggered widespread outrage and public outcries on social media.

During discussions on the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah (JB Danquah) on the floor of the House on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings stood up to seek permission to contribute.

However, the Speaker ignored her and instead granted the floor to the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin.

In a disturbing moment, a voice from the Minority side hurled a deeply derogatory remark at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, referring to her as the “daughter of a murderer” and ordering her to sit down.

Another unknown MP, also believed to be on the Minority side, followed up, claiming, “But there is evidence that her father killed people.”

The inappropriate comments have been widely condemned by some Ghanaians as ‘disgusting’ and ‘unworthy,’ with many arguing that they were used as a jab or insult towards the Klottey Korle lawmaker merely to score cheap political points.

They further argue that such language should never have been considered or used, given the decorum and honorable integrity expected of Parliament and its members.

Additionally, they have emphasised that Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings did nothing to warrant the baseless attack on her character.

Some critics have also vehemently called for a retraction and an apology from the Minority caucus, as well as for the unidentified lawmaker who made the insulting comment to be held accountable.

Wanted Dutch drug baron: Sierra Leone police identify Jos Leijdekkers as Umar Sherif

0

Jos Leijdekkers as captured in a screen grab of a video taken in a church in Sierra Leone on New Year’s Eve.

The Sierra Leonean police says it has made a discovery that the individual seen in videos and photos in close proximity to the country’s president, and identified by Dutch media as the wanted drug baron, Jos Leijdekkers is rather known as Umar Sherif.

In the videos and photos, Leijdekkers is seen in the company of Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio and his daughter, Agnes Bio, with whom Leijdekkers is believed to be in a romantic relationship.

In a dramatic twist of events following the discovery that Leijdekkers, wanted in his home country of The Netherlands and in Europe, has been living in Sierra Leone for at least six months, and seen in videos sitting close to and on a farm harvesting rice with the Sierra Leonean president and his daughter, is Umar Sherif.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sierra Leone, Willam Sellu told reporters at a press conference Tuesday February 4, 2025, that the individual is known as Umar Sherif. According to the IGP, they have raided every suspected place and searched everywhere they had hoped to find the said Umar Sherif but have failed.

“The picture that has been circulating on social media as Jos Leijdekkers—we have been able to, through our Open Source Investigation Unit, affix a name to that face, which is Umar Sherif,” IGP Sellu said.

He said the police came to that conclusion after its Open Source Investigation Unit had examined the videos and photos in which the individual appears. He also said after thoroughly reviewing the country’s formal entry records for the past six months, they found no trace of Sherif’s official entry into or exit out of Sierra Leone, adding that the authorities remain uncertain of Sherif’s whereabouts or activities in the country.

“We don’t have that name in our records,” he emphasized.

He urged citizens to inform the police if they get any information on the individual.

The 33-year-old Leijdekkers, nicknamed Bolle Jos, is wanted for drug smuggling in The Netherlands. The fugitive has also been described as Europe’s most wanted man.

Leijdekkers was sentenced to 24 years in prison in absentia in June last year by a Rotterdam court for the offence of smuggling seven tonnes of cocaine, an armed robbery in Finland and ordering murder. In September last year, a Belgian court also sentenced him to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking offences and assault. Dutch police also suspect his involvement in the disappearance and suspected torture and murder of Naima Jilal, a woman who disappeared in Amsterdam in 2019.

Meanwhile, the government of The Netherlands through its Ministry of Justice says it will make an extradition request to the Sierra Leonean authorities, even though the two countries have no extradition treaty.

Dutch prosecutor, Wim de Bruin had told Ghana Business News on the phone that the Minister of Justice of The Netherlands will be writing to Sierra Leonean authorities for the extradition of Leijdekkers.

Johnson Asiama uniquely qualified to hold BoG Governor position

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, has expressed confidence in Dr Johnson Asiama’s qualification to hold the position of Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

This follows concerns raised by the Minority over the procedural and constitutional implications of Dr Asiama’s early assumption of office. According to the Minority, Dr Asiama should refrain from engaging in official duties at the BoG until his nomination as Governor is fully approved by the Council of State.

The caucus has also urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to exercise strict scrutiny in its engagements with Dr Asiama to prevent potential global reputational risks to Ghana.

This stems from the government’s recent withdrawal of all charges against Dr Asiama, who was previously facing trial in connection with the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank.

The Minority questions his credibility to serve as a lead negotiator with the IMF under these circumstances.

Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Wednesday, Ofosu highlighted Asiama’s extensive experience and expertise in economic and financial matters.

“He is a known economic and finance expert with significant acumen. He has worked in a previous capacity as the second deputy governor of the BoG and therefore is uniquely qualified to hold the position of governor of the BoG.

“That is what President Mahama considered in appointing him to the position, and we believe that he will do a very good job,” Ofosu stated.

He emphasised that the government is not worried about the opposition adding that stakeholders within the financial sector and the economy are well-grounded and understand the issues at hand.

“Government is not concerned. All the stakeholders within the financial sector, the stakeholders in the economy are people who are well-grounded and know what exactly the issues are regarding the economy and the nation’s finances.

‘They know too well that political actors want to grandstand and dabble in all manner of theatrics as a way of furthering their political interest.

“I am not sure that any serious investor out there or any player in the Ghanaian economy will make decisions based on some issues that the minority are raising, which are not grounded and motivated by politicking,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.

Sanitation: A Governance and Institutional Imperative

0

Sanitation remains one of Ghana’s most pressing urban management challenges, with mounting concerns over waste management, environmental health, and public safety.

However, beyond the visible infrastructural gaps and logistical inefficiencies, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, asserts that the root cause of the nation’s sanitation woes lies in governance and institutional coordination.

At a recent engagement with officials from the erstwhile Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, as well as representatives from the Korle Klottey and Accra Metropolitan Assemblies, Mr. Ibrahim emphasized the urgent need for a structured monitoring framework to synchronize service delivery across agencies.

He noted that inter-institutional collaboration must be the cornerstone of any effective waste management strategy if sustainable sanitation is to be achieved.

Unpacking the Waste Management Conundrum

The meeting delved into the multifaceted nature of waste management, highlighting critical areas such as waste storage, collection, transportation, source separation and recovery, treatment, and final disposal.

Stakeholders underscored the importance of bolstering coordination among government agencies, local authorities, and private sector actors to develop a cohesive and integrated waste management system.

Central to these discussions was the potential role of President John Dramani Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy initiative.

Mr. Ibrahim outlined how a well-lit urban environment could facilitate night-time waste collection and public cleaning with minimal disruption to daily human activity.

“A functioning 24-hour economy, supported by operational streetlights, would allow us to conduct essential sanitation services more efficiently and effectively,” he remarked.

Institutional Strengthening for Lasting Impact

Recognizing the systemic nature of the sanitation crisis, Mr. Ibrahim reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reinforcing institutional governance and strengthening policy frameworks to deliver lasting sanitation solutions.

He called upon all stakeholders—municipal assemblies, waste management firms, and civil society—to embrace a shared responsibility in ensuring cleaner, healthier urban spaces.

Sanitation, he reiterated, is not merely a service but a governance issue requiring long-term strategic planning, resource allocation, and political will.

By fostering collaboration and accountability at all levels, Ghana can chart a new course towards sustainable urban sanitation management, ensuring a dignified and habitable environment for all citizens.

‘I’m tired!’ – Watch moment 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament ‘gave up’ during frustrations by MPs

0

Andrew Asiamah Amoako is the Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako is the Second Deputy Speaker

It was a day marked by ‘commotion’ during the 11th Sitting of the 1st Meeting of the 1st Session of the 9th Parliament on February 4, 2025.

Members of Parliament gathered to discuss and debate key issues and deliberate on government business.

However, as parliamentary proceedings unfolded during this particular sitting, several matters came up for discussion.

Notable among them were the approvals of the final batch of ministerial nominees, the commemoration of the late JB Danquah, and other relevant topics.

At a point, the Member of Parliament of Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, took the floor to speak and make his submission. However, the disturbances in the House made it difficult for him to be heard by the Speaker.

Despite repeated calls for order from the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, who presided over the session, the disruptions continued, with lawmakers disregarding his efforts to maintain decorum.

Frustrated that his attempts to restore silence and order were fruitless, Andrew Asiamah Amoako frustratingly blurted out into his microphone “I’m tired,” in a moment where he might not have realised that his microphone was still on.

In that moment, and with pressure from Nitiwul, who was yet to be done with his submissions, could convince the speaker to allow him to grant him permission to continue.

Andrew Asiamah exclaimed, “Me ntie,” literally meaning “I won’t listen.”

“I’m tired, I’m tired,” he said, while making gestures with his hand to emphasise his frustration and to convey his message more clearly.

He added, “Honorable Nitiwul, I’m not going to take anymore. I’m tired.”

Amoako further cautioned the Majority caucus against using their microphones when they have nothing to contribute, which was being employed as a way to interrupt lawmakers making their submissions on the floor.

“Honorable members, those who are putting on their microphones, Majority leadership, please make sure your members do not put on their microphones. Honorable members, when I say this you get flared up. We are doing government business; we have to finish and leave. Majority Leader, why are your members putting on the microphones? Should we suspend sitting? Ah, what is this,” Asiamah Amoako added.

Since joining Palace from Leicester City in 2017, Schlupp has made over 200 appearances, accumulating vast Premier League experience. He was also part of Leicester’s historic 2016 squad that defied the odds to win the Premier League title.

39% of Ghanaians prefer Treasury Bills for financial security – KPMG Report

0

Ghanaian banking customers are increasingly shifting toward low-risk investment options amid inflationary pressures and currency depreciation, according to the 2024 KPMG West Africa Banking Industry Customer Experience Survey.

The survey reveals that 39% of customers prefer treasury bills as a secure investment choice, while 25% opt for fixed-term deposits. Higher-risk investments, such as stocks and bonds, saw a lower preference, with 19% and 9% of customers investing in them, respectively.

However, mutual funds are gaining traction, accounting for 23% of investments.

Generational Investment Trends

The report highlights generational differences in investment behavior. Individuals over 60 are increasingly investing in treasury bills to preserve wealth. Meanwhile, millennials (ages 26-41) are investing less, with the percentage of non-investors rising from 17% in 2023 to 32% in 2024, due to financial pressures such as rent and family obligations.

In contrast, Gen Z investors are demonstrating stronger financial discipline, with 13% saving between 21% and 40% of their monthly income, indicating a growing culture of savings among younger investors.

Investment Priorities & Barriers

Beyond traditional investments, Ghanaians are prioritizing personal development and family welfare.

  • 24% of respondents are investing in skill acquisition and business ventures, reflecting a drive for career advancement and financial independence.
  • 24% are allocating funds to education, healthcare, and family needs, reinforcing the significance of household financial security.
  • 22% are focusing on wealth creation through investments in property sales and business expansion.

While 34% of respondents express openness to higher-risk investments, knowledge gaps remain a significant barrier to diversification.

Opportunities for Banks

The report emphasizes the need for banks to offer tailored financial literacy programs and advisory services to help customers explore alternative investments, such as real estate and commodities.

With the rise of digital banking, financial institutions have a unique opportunity to boost investment participation through accessible, user-friendly platforms.

As Ghanaians seek long-term financial security, banks that provide personalized investment solutions and education will strengthen customer trust and engagement in the evolving financial landscape.

Outgoing SIC MD allegedly locks office and leaves with keys

0

The immediate past Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company Limited, Ms. Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, has reportedly refused to hand over to the newly appointed Acting MD, Mr. James Agyenim-Boateng, weeks after his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama.

Reports indicate that Ms. Duah-Yentumi has not only declined to facilitate the transition but also locked the MD’s office and withheld the keys, making it inaccessible to the new acting MD.

On January 24, 2025, President Mahama appointed Mr. Agyenim-Boateng as Acting MD, replacing Ms. Duah-Yentumi, who had served under the previous NPP administration.

Agyenim-Boateng revealed on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, February 5, that he visited SIC’s headquarters to formally introduce himself to management. However, Ms. Duah-Yentumi refused to attend the meeting, which typically serves as a platform for outgoing and incoming executives to ensure a smooth transition.

Despite formal expectations, the outgoing MD has yet to present her handover notes, exacerbating concerns among staff.

Agyenim-Boateng noted that “24th January 2025 I was named by his excellency the president. Subsequent to that I was in touch with the office and then I proceeded there. It must have been on a Thursday when I met with the management team.”

“…When I went there I had very good introductory meeting but it was obvious I could not access the office for which I needed to work and therefore for the most part I have worked offsite as in dealing with critical issues of SIC from off the office location”

“It as become apparent that the real difficulty regarding why I have not been able to access the office is because the person before me, the predecessor has actually locked up the offices and bolted with the keys. It is strange.

“As I speak to you I haven’t seen handing over notes of this outgone MD. I have see the handing notes of the MD before her.”

Barker-Vormawor reacts to Dr. Srem-Sai’s nomination as Deputy AG

0

Dr. Justice Srem-Sai (L) with Oliver Barker-Vormawor Dr. Justice Srem-Sai (L) with Oliver Barker-Vormawor

Private legal practitioner and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has extended congratulations to Dr. Justice Srem-Sai following his nomination as the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate.

In a post shared on his X page on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Barker-Vormawor described Dr. Srem-Sai as a transformative figure in his life.

He wrote, “There are people whose presence in your life changes everything. Justice Srem-Sai is one of those people for me.

“For the last three years, our lives have become so entangled that I can no longer tell where my fight ends and his begins. He has been my anchor in the storm, the voice of reason when the world felt unreasonable.”

Barker-Vormawor shared how Dr. Srem-Sai has been a constant support through difficult times.

“He has picked up my calls at the most ungodly hours, stood beside me in the darkest moments, and shown up for me when it felt like everyone else had disappeared,” he stated.

He praised his friend for his loyalty and commitment to justice.

“Every activist deserves a lawyer like Justice, a lawyer who, even in disagreement, never abandons you. A lawyer who understands that this fight for justice, for democracy, for the soul of this republic, cannot be won through convention alone. That sometimes, the road to redemption requires both the paths well-traveled and the ones no one dares to take”, he indicated.

Barker-Vormawor acknowledged the profound impact Dr. Srem-Sai had on movements like FixTheCountry and Democracy Hub.

“Without him, there would be no FixTheCountry. No Democracy Hub as we know it. He has fought for us in the courts, in police stations, in the public square.

From the very first Supreme Court battle to the last OccupyJulorbiHouse arrests, he has been there. Always there,” he noted.

Barker-Vormawor further emphasised Dr. Srem-Sai’s role in establishing the Lawyers for Protest Defence movement.

“When history tells the story of our struggle, it will speak of the Lawyers for Protest Defence—the movement he built to defend the right to assemble, the right to speak, the right to dissent.

“I love Justice as a brother loves his elder brother. I have looked up to him all my professional life, and I cannot imagine a day when I will not. We share so much that sometimes I wonder if our minds are conjoined, if the thoughts in my head also exist in his,” he added.

While acknowledging his personal loss, he wrote, “Today, I lose a lawyer. But Ghana gains something far greater a Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice with an unbreakable spirit and an unshakable moral compass.”

On February 4, 2025, the President John Dramani Mahama announced his first batch of 13 deputy ministerial nominees, including Dr. Justice Srem Sai, who is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Law School.

Why are you silent on Pooley’s death?

0

President Mahama and Richard Ahiagbah President Mahama and Richard Ahiagbah

The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called out President John Dramani Mahama over his supposed silence on the demise of Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.

According to him, President Mahama’s failure to publicly comment on the issue days after the tragic incident is worrying, considering the impact of the issue on football in the country.

The National Communications Director of the NPP noted that if former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had done the same, there would be vehement public criticisms against him.

Ahiagbah called on the president to prioritize the case and at least address the issues to console the bereaved family.

“H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has not said a word for 72 hours and counting after Francis Yaw Frimpong, alias Pooley, was killed in cold blood after a football match in Nsoatre in the Bono Region.

“Why is the president silent on a matter that threatens football and security in Ghana? The media would be up in arms if Akufo-Addo were president. President Mahama must prioritize all citizens and show care for Francis Yaw Frimpong,” he wrote on X.

He made these comments after Pooley was fatally stabbed during a melee at a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Kotoko on February 2, 2025.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have banned Nsoatreman from using their home venue and initiated a probe into the violent incident.
