Ablekuma North: We won’t go for a rerun

0

Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma North, has firmly ruled out the possibility of a rerun of the parliamentary election in the constituency.

She asserted that all necessary documentation is intact, dismissing calls for a rerun due to disputes over the collation of results.

A High Court order on January 4, 2025, directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to finalize the collation process and declare winners for four outstanding parliamentary elections. While three constituencies have had their results declared, Ablekuma North remains unresolved.

Collation resumed on January 8, 2025, but was suspended due to incomplete results from three polling stations. The EC scheduled the process to continue on January 17, 2025, at 8:00 AM. However, based on security intelligence, the Ghana Police Service advised postponement.

Despite this, the EC, in a statement on January 17, indicated that the police had not provided enhanced security at the collation center, leading to an invasion by party supporters and a subsequent suspension of the process.

Fans Call for Shatta Wale’s Addition to Netflix’s ‘Young, Famous and African

0

Several Ghanaians have called for the inclusion of Ghanaian Dancehall King Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, to the Young, Famous, and African cast in the next season.

Young, Famous & African is a reality series that follows a group of affluent young media stars in Johannesburg, South Africa which captures how they navigate their careers, relationships, and personal lives.

The series showcases the glamorous lifestyles and challenges faced by these celebrities, making it a captivating watch for fans of reality television.

The inclusion of Shatta Wale according to many is a result of the underrepresentation of Ghanaians in the cast. Currently, only Fantana is in a cast of 14 of which four are Nigerians; Swanky, Ini Edo, Annie Macaulay-Idibia, Zari Hassan (Zari the Boss lady), Shakib Cham Lutaaya, Uganda, Diamond Platnumz, Tanzania, Naked DJ, Kayleigh Schwark, Nadia Nakai, Khanyi Mbau from South Africa and Luis Munana Namibian.

In a Facebook post made by Peace Hyde Executive Producer for the reality show captioned, “The inexplicable power to create identity, narrative and capture the cultural zeitgeist through styling, authentic unscripted storytelling, unfiltered conversation, and emotions is undoubtedly one of the key drivers in #YoungFamousAndAfrican success. So it is beyond exciting to have the award-winning Season 3 of #YFA capture the moment and drive conversations but don’t take my word for it! No matter where you are in the world watch #YFA Season 3 Now Streaming ONLY on Netflix!…”

Dickson Adjei-Kusi under the comment session wrote, “Add Charles Nii Armah Mensah, Shatta Wale . We need more drama”. Ms. Aba Haizel also urged Peace Hyde to consider Ghanaian stars to spice up the show.”

Well done Peace Hyde, can you add more Ghanaians, Efya Norkturnal, Efia Odo, Kidi, and Kennedy Agyapong’s daughters, they also made a reality show on YouTube”.

Shatta Wale who has over a decade of experience in the African music industry has contributed immensely to the projection of Ghana music on the continent. On record, he is the first Ghanaian artist to shut down O2 Indigo on two occasions, the Accra sports stadium, and also the first Ghanaian musician to get featured in Beyonce’s Black is King album.

Mahama highlights Government’s commitment to operationalisation of Komenda Sugar Factory

0

By Iddi Yire

Cape Coast, Feb. 06, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday highlighted his government’s commitment to the operationalisation of the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.

He noted that he asked the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to update him with the Komenda Sugar Factory.

“We are determined to proceed and continue with that project so that the Central Region will become the biggest producer of sugar in Ghana,” President Mahama said at a durbar of the Chiefs and People of the Central Region in Cape Coast during his Thank You Tour of the Region.

The nationwide tour, which began on Friday, January 24, in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital is to enable the President to express his sincere appreciation to the people of Ghana for the overwhelming support and trust reposed in him at the 2024 elections.

The President with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who earlier inspected the abandoned Anomabo Fisheries College project, said the project was a dream of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

He said the project was packaged and work was started, and it was at an advanced stage of completion for the first phase when they left office.

“It is unacceptable that for eight years that project has been abandoned and has not been continued,” the President said.

He noted that the 2025 budget was going to be ready in March, and that they were going to make provision in the budget to continue the project so that by the end of this year, they would open that College for students.

President Mahama said upon completion, the project would be handed over to the University of Cape Coast and would be put under the Faculty of Agriculture to provide degrees in fishing and training in aquaculture.

He said the Government would also work closely to upgrade the facilities at the Cape Coast Hospital so that it could indeed be a real Teaching Hospital for the University of Cape Coast Medical School.

Cocoa Earnings See Lowest Drop In 15 Years

0

Ghana’s cocoa export earnings have plummeted to $1.7 billion in 2024, the lowest in 15 years, marking a 25.4% decline from the previous year.

Data from the Bank of Ghana reveals that cocoa production has shrunk by 11% within the same period, largely due to illegal mining, smuggling, and crop diseases.

Ghana’s cocoa output has drastically fallen from over 1 million metric tonnes in 2021 to just 500,000 tonnes in 2024.

This decline has weakened the country’s negotiating power in the syndicated loan market.

Despite Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire producing over 60% of the world’s cocoa, they have failed to capitalize on the recent 157% surge in global cocoa prices due to forward sales agreements.

Ghana’s cocoa earnings have been declining since 2022, and the country’s fragile economy is facing increased pressure.

The decline in cocoa revenue is expected to strain the Ghanaian cedi further, exacerbating the nation’s fiscal challenges.

Abdullah bin Zayed attends Zayed Award for Human Fraternity ceremony, recognising 2025 honorees

0

Under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, attended the ceremony of the sixth edition of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.

Held on Tuesday at the Founder’s Memorial in Abu Dhabi, the ceremony gathered world leaders, dignitaries, and humanitarian advocates, including President of East Timor José Ramos-Horta; His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; First Lady of Colombia Verónica del Socorro Alcocer García; and former president of the European Council Charles Michel.

The event – with the theme ‘Tapestry of Humanity’ – opened with a moving performance by 18-year-old sight-impaired Indonesian singer Putri Ariani and Emirati pianist Rashed Al Marzooqi.

The ceremony coincided with the UN-recognised International Day of Human Fraternity, which commemorates the signing of the Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity by Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, and Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, on February 4, 2019.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity recognised three honorees namely: Prime Minister of Barbados the Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP, for her visionary leadership and climate advocacy; World Central Kitchen (WCK) – founded by Chef José Andrés – for the organisation’s relentless commitment to providing food relief in conflict zones and following natural disasters; and 15-year-old health innovator Heman Bekele for his efforts in developing a cancer-fighting soap to treat early-stage skin cancer.

The Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP, received the award for her bold leadership on climate action. Through the Bridgetown Initiative, launched in 2022, she advocates for systemic changes to combat climate inequality and urges global financial systems to prioritize climate resilience in vulnerable nations.

Mottley has committed to making Barbados 100 percent renewable by 2030, setting a powerful example for climate action. Her innovative debt-for-climate swaps have enabled countries to redirect resources toward building climate resilience, influencing policy shifts worldwide and creating lasting impacts on a global climate justice.

Since its founding by Chef José Andres in 2010, World Central Kitchen has delivered over 300 million meals across more than 30 countries. Its rapid response model and ability to operate in some of the most challenging and dangerous circumstances have established WCK as a global leader in disaster relief, offering immediate aid and long-term support to communities in need.

Heman Bekele received the award for his ambition to save the lives of the most vulnerable and his vision of accessible and affordable healthcare. Inspired by the high cost of skin cancer treatment in developing countries, he developed a cost-effective soap that aims to treat early-stage skin cancer.

He is now collaborating with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to refine and assess his concept, with skin cancer researchers recognizing his potential to revolutionise healthcare in underserved communities and improve global access to affordable treatments.

Pope Francis and His Eminence Grand Imam Al-Tayeb addressed the ceremony in video messages.

Pope Francis remarked: “I trust that the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity honorees will set an example to encourage others in undertaking initiatives to promote peaceful coexistence and that they will be models of fruitful collaboration between people of different religions at the service of all humanity.”

Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb shared: “On this occasion I am pleased to extend my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s Zayed Award for Human Fraternity honorees.

The Honorable Mia Mottley, I commend your tireless efforts in addressing the global challenges of climate change. The young hero – today’s child and tomorrow’s scientist – Heman Bekele, it was truly a joy to witness your well-deserved recognition. World Central Kitchen, honoring you today is indeed an acknowledgement of all humanitarian relief workers who have left their homes, families and children to extend a helping hand to the vulnerable and oppressed.”

Prime Minister of Barbados the Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP, expressed: “It is our responsibility to recognize that we must make history trend in the right direction, not for us who have lived life, but for the young ones.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity bringing together the best of what is represented both by His Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence the Grand Imam allows us to reflect on what really matters. Without life, we have nothing and without a planet, we definitely have nothing. I thank you for this high honor bestowed upon me, and I take it not in my name but in the name of all those who want a voice for a better planet and for opportunities and peace for the people of the world.”

Founder of World Central Kitchen, Chef José Andrés, shared his insights during the ceremony, emphasizing, “This award is an expression of the values Sheikh Zayed has taught his nation and the world; tolerance, coexistence, understanding and respect, they are the values of the UAE, and I think in our own way, World Central Kitchen seeks to live by these simple principles.”

In his remarks, Heman Bekele said, “I have always been driven by one goal: to equalize access to healthcare—to ensure that life-saving treatments and technologies aren’t limited by geography, wealth, or privilege. Science and innovation should serve humanity, not just those who can afford it. This award will help so much in fueling my dreams. This is just the beginning, and I invite you all to join me in making healthcare a universal right, not just a privilege.”

The ceremony also marked the opening of nominations for the 2026 edition of the award. Eligible nominators can submit their nominations via the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity’s official website.

Prof. Kobby Mensah’s leadership and the future of sustainable tourism in Ghana

0

Renowned academic and Political Marketing expert Prof. Kobby Mensah has been appointed by the President of the Republic of Ghana as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC).

His leadership comes at an important moment when the tourism sector seeks innovative strategies to boost growth while preserving the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

One of the key philosophies that will shape his tenure is sustainable tourism – a vision that aligns with global best practices and Ghana’s long-term tourism objectives.

What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism refers to a responsible approach to travel and tourism that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

It balances economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being by minimising negative environmental impacts, such as pollution, deforestation, and over-tourism.

It also helps preserve cultural heritage by ensuring that local traditions, customs, and historical sites are safeguarded. This will lead to economic inclusivity so that local communities benefit from tourism investments and employment opportunities.

What Prof. Kobby Mensah Brings to the Table

With his deep expertise in strategic tourism marketing, branding, and media relations, Prof. Mensah is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Ghana’s tourism sector.

His leadership at GTDC will likely focus on branding Ghana as a Sustainable Tourism Destination and repositioning it as a leading eco-tourism and cultural tourism hub in Africa.

He is also expected to develop strategic marketing campaigns that promote responsible tourism.

Another critical area he will likely focus on is community-centred tourism development, which ensures that local communities are actively involved in tourism projects by encouraging local entrepreneurship in the tourism value chain, like hotels, restaurants, tour guides, and artisanal businesses.

The venerable Professor is also expected to encourage eco-friendly infrastructure and investment by advocating for environmentally sustainable hotel and resort developments and supporting green initiatives such as waste management, clean energy, and conservation projects within tourism sites.

In the coming months, I look forward to several collaborations with government agencies, tourism operators, and international bodies to implement sustainable tourism policies to drive partnerships with investors who align with sustainability principles.

A New Era for Ghana’s Tourism Sector?

I am hopeful that under Prof. Kobby Mensah’s leadership, the GTDC is poised to advance Ghana’s tourism industry through responsible, community-driven, and eco-conscious strategies.

His vision for sustainable tourism will not only attract visitors but also ensure that Ghana’s natural beauty, historical landmarks, and cultural legacy are preserved for future generations.

His appointment signals a progressive shift towards a tourism sector that prioritises both economic growth and environmental responsibility.

As Ghana continues to expand its tourism footprint, Prof. Mensah’s leadership could be a game-changer in positioning the country as a sustainable tourism model for Africa and beyond.

Ghanaian Soldier Gets 70 Months In Prison For Smuggling Firearms

0

A Ghanaian soldier serving in the United States (U.S.) Army, Major Kojo Owusu Dartey, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for smuggling firearms from the United States to Ghana.

Additionally, he will serve three years of supervised release.

Major Dartey, a member of the U.S. Special Forces, was convicted of multiple offenses, including making false statements, conspiracy, dealing in firearms without a license, and illegally exporting firearms without a license.

He was also found guilty of lying about having sexual relations with one of his witnesses in the case.

According to court records, Major Dartey orchestrated a smuggling operation where he personally acquired firearms and instructed another soldier to purchase additional weapons on his behalf. He then concealed the firearms inside blue barrels containing rice and household goods and shipped them to Ghana.

However, officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) intercepted the container carrying the smuggled firearms.

Major Dartey’s sentencing comes after he was found guilty in April 2024 of smuggling firearms to Ghana.

He initially faced a maximum sentence of 240 months in prison.

Former SIC MD Hollistar Duah-Yentumi drops lawsuit against SIC PLC and acting MD

0

Former SIC MD Hollistar Duah-Yentumi Former SIC MD Hollistar Duah-Yentumi

The former Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company Limited, Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, has withdrawn her lawsuit against SIC PLC and Acting Managing Director, James Agyenim-Boateng.

This was reported by TV3GH on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Duah-Yentumi filed the lawsuit on February 4, 2025, challenging the termination of her employment and the subsequent appointment of Agyenim-Boateng, which was announced by President John Dramani Mahama on January 27, 2025.

A lawyer by profession, Duah-Yentumi argued that her tenure as Managing Director was contractually secured for a period of four years, set to expire on January 1, 2028, unless otherwise determined by the Board of Directors.

She contended that her employment was governed by a contract dated March 21, 2024, with an addendum dated May 2, 2024, stipulating that her position could only be terminated by the Board of Directors or through a resolution passed by all shareholders at an Annual General Meeting.

According to the lawsuit, her termination was unlawful as it was executed through a letter from the Office of the President, signed by Executive Secretary Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., on January 24, 2025.

The letter, referenced as OPS 127/25/149, was received by Duah-Yentumi on January 27, 2025. It purported to terminate her role while appointing Agyenim-Boateng as her successor.

Duah-Yentumi claimed this action violated the terms of her employment agreement. She sought a High Court declaration that her termination was unlawful and breached her contract.

“Regarding the termination of the Plaintiff’s employment, the Plaintiff states that under and by virtue of clause 7 of the agreement, the Plaintiff’s employment may only be terminated by the Board of Directors of the 1st Defendant or by all the shareholders of the company acting at an Annual General Meeting for the said purpose,” the suit read.

Additionally, she challenged the legality of Agyenim-Boateng’s appointment, arguing that it was not conducted in accordance with the company’s governance procedures.

The lawsuit also highlighted the financial implications of her termination. Under her contract, Duah-Yentumi was entitled to a lump sum payment covering her gross salary, allowances, and benefits for the remainder of her tenure.

“The Plaintiff further states that upon the termination of her employment, she is entitled, in accordance with clause 7 of the agreement, to a lump sum payment of her gross salary, allowances, and benefits for the unexpired period of the agreement, which payment must be made at the ‘official handing over to the next successor,’” the suit added.

Her employment agreement included significant benefits, such as a 30-day paid annual vacation, an annual familiarization tour with a $3,000 airfare allowance, a per diem of $810 for international travel, and personal accident and life insurance coverage equivalent to five times her annual basic salary. These benefits were subject to an annual 15% increment review.

Duah-Yentumi’s legal team sought an order for the defendants to pay her entire salary and benefits for the unexpired term of her contract, along with any other relief the court deemed appropriate.

“The Managing Director shall be entitled to an annual familiarization tour to any destination. SIC shall pay an amount not exceeding US$3,000 for an air ticket for the trip upon proof of undertaking the trip. The annual familiarization benefit is a ‘use it or lose it’ benefit.

“The Managing Director’s annual familiarization tour shall be considered part of her entitled paid vacation days each year and should therefore be deducted from the total entitled days when taken.

“The Managing Director shall be paid a per diem of US$810 for all international travels for seven (7) days towards the familiarization tour referred to in section 5.3(d). The payment shall commence before her departure,” the suit further stated.

The case has drawn significant attention, raising questions about corporate governance, contractual obligations, and the role of external authorities in the management of publicly listed companies.

The defendants in the case were SIC Insurance PLC, a limited liability company listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, and James Agyenim-Boateng, a lawyer and politician residing within the jurisdiction of the court.

Despite their efforts, they failed to secure a conviction. This failure was not due to political interference, as they now claim, but because the case against him was baseless from the very beginning.
The attempt to criminalize his actions was nothing more than a political

The other area has to do with water bodies, so we’re giving them two weeks, if you have any investment whatsoever and you are on water bodies polluting them and destroying our water bodies, you have two weeks to leave the space. Mahama appoints Gad Asorwoe Akwensivie as Acting Administrator of Stool Lands

0

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed legal practitioner and surveyor Gad Asorwoe Akwensivie as the Acting Administrator of Stool Lands.

Akwensivie, who takes over from Maame Ama Edumadze-Acquah, will lead the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands (OASL) in implementing the government’s agenda to transform land management and administration for accelerated development.

He will collaborate with traditional authorities, the Lands Commission, the National Development Planning Commission, the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority, and other relevant agencies.

Prior to his appointment, Akwensivie was an Associate at Awoonor Law Consultancy, Principal Valuer at Felix Dzubey and Co., and Head of Legal and ADR at COLANDEF Land & Property Rights. In addition to his career as a lecturer and farmer, Akwensivie brings 25 years of local practice and experience in land administration, having worked in Rwanda, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the USA.

After completing his national service in 1999 at OASL, Akwensivie was employed in 2000 as an Assistant Stool Lands Officer. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become the Deputy Chief Stool Lands Officer.

He served on the Audit Committee and was a Member of Management for four years, contributing significantly to the operations department, particularly in mining, communication, legal, and research.

Akwensivie played an active role in the implementation of the Land Administration Project and collaborated with Parliament on the passage of the Land Act 2020 (Act 1036). He also worked with the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department, the Lands Commission, and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority.

He represented OASL in court and appeared before the Judgement Debt Commissioner and the Constitutional Review Commission. Akwensivie also served as the Chief Editor of the Our Heritage Journal of OASL. In 2023, he transitioned into private surveying and legal practice.

Between 2000 and 2023, Akwensivie served on several committees, including the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) Presidential Transition Committees, the MLNR Research and Statistics Working Group, the MLNR Procurement Committees, the MLNR Website & Library Development Committee, and the MLNR Annual Meet-the-Press Committee, where he was Chief Editor of the LANAR Newsletter.

He also served on the Communications & Safeguards Committee, the Land Administration Project Procurement Committee, and was Editor for the LAP website and news magazine.

From 2008 to 2016, while at OASL, Akwensivie served on the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI) Multi-Stakeholder Group at the Ministry of Finance. In 2009, he was nominated by the President of the Republic to serve on the Public Servants Housing Loan Scheme Board (PSHLSB) at the Ministry of Works and Housing, where he later became Chair from 2013 to 2016.

You can’t campaign against Mahama’s vision and expect to be maintained as CEO – Former SIC MD told

Hollistar Duah-Yentumi (R) and Kofi Tonto (L) Hollistar Duah-Yentumi (R) and Kofi Tonto (L)

A political aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has criticised the immediate-past Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company Limited, Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, over reports of her refusal to hand over to the newly-appointed Acting MD, James Agyenim-Boateng, weeks after his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the communicator, appointees from the former government are expected to step down from their respective positions following the government transition.

Kofi Tonto argued that individuals who campaign against the new government’s vision cannot expect to be retained in their roles, urging them to step down and make way for new appointees of the NDC-led government to take over.

“You cannot campaign against the vision and ideas of Mahama and expect to be maintained as a CEO. Step down for those who believe in his ideas and vision. It’s that simple,” he posted on his Facebook account on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

His comments come in the wake of reports of an ongoing tussle at SIC Insurance Company Limited.

Earlier, GhanaWeb reported that the former MD did not only refuse to hand over, but also locked the offices of the MD at SIC Insurance Company Limited, where the newly-appointed MD was supposed to operate, and fled with the office keys.

President John Dramani Mahama, on Friday, January 24, 2025, appointed Agyenim-Boateng as the Acting MD of SIC Insurance Company Limited, replacing Duah-Yentumi, who was appointed by the erstwhile NPP administration.

GhanaWeb’s further checks show that on Thursday, January 30, the new acting MD paid an official visit to the headquarters of the company to introduce himself to the management of SIC but the former MD refused to attend the meeting.

In many institutions, such meetings have been used by both the outgoing and the incoming Chief Executive Officers to effect the transition and ensure a smooth handing over of administration.

But the situation at SIC Insurance Company Limited has been remarkably different as the outgone MD has refused to be part of the transition.

She has also failed to present handing over notes, quite apart from locking up the MD’s offices and keeping the keys to herself.

FDAG condemns Dr. Gideon Boako’s claims on BoG Governor’s appointment

0

Dr. Johnson Asiama has been nominated as Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama has been nominated as Bank of Ghana Governor

The Forum for Development and Accountable Governance (FDAG) has criticized recent remarks by Dr. Gideon Boako, MP for Tano North, regarding the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

FDAG asserts that Boako’s claims misrepresent legal processes and could undermine institutional credibility.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 6, 2025, and signed by its Senior Research Fellow, Nana Kojo Abbam, FDAG criticized Dr. Boako’s claims, particularly his assertion that the appointment is illegitimate due to a lack of prior consultation with the Council of State.

Citing Supreme Court rulings, FDAG clarified that while consultation is required under Article 70 of the 1992 Constitution, it does not equate to mandatory prior approval.

The group referenced the 2005 Supreme Court case Agyei Twum v. Attorney General & Akwetey, which established that consultation with the Council of State is advisory and does not restrict the President’s discretion in making appointments.

FDAG also took issue with Dr. Boako’s characterization of Dr. Asiama as a “potential criminal convict,” condemning what it described as an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the newly appointed BoG Governor.

The group pointed out that all past charges against Dr. Asiama were dropped by the Attorney General due to a lack of evidence.

It further emphasised that any new allegations should be pursued through legal channels rather than media statements.

Addressing concerns that Dr. Asiama’s appointment could harm Ghana’s credibility with international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), FDAG dismissed such claims as baseless.

The group argued that institutions like the IMF operate based on legal due process and regulatory frameworks, and there is no evidence to suggest that the appointment undermines Ghana’s financial standing.

Instead, FDAG warned that politically motivated disputes over lawful appointments could weaken investor confidence and create perceptions of instability.

FDAG further highlighted Dr. Asiama’s contributions to Ghana’s financial system, particularly his role in shaping key regulatory frameworks.

“As Deputy Governor in charge of supervision at the BoG, he played a crucial role in developing the Deposit Protection Act, 2016 (Act 931), which led to the establishment of the Ghana Deposit Insurance Corporation (GDIC),” the group noted.

Additionally, FDAG credited Dr. Asiama for initiating the groundwork for the Corporate Governance Directive, which was later implemented in 2018. This directive has since improved risk management, strategic planning, and governance structures in Ghana’s banking sector.

The group stated that these reforms, which began under Dr. Asiama’s leadership, contributed significantly to strengthening financial sector governance before his contract termination following the change in government in 2016.

FDAG urged all parties to respect due process and focus on governance issues through legal and institutional mechanisms rather than public speculation and accusations.

Samuel Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, has highlighted the importance of addressing responsible gaming alongside the operational challenges faced by the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

In a statement in Parliament on Thursday, February 6, Awuku emphasised the potential negative impacts of lottery addiction, particularly on vulnerable minors.

Vetting Chaos: We have 10 days to submit our report to the Speaker

Chairman of the ad hoc committee investigating the recent ministerial vetting chaos Chairman of the ad hoc committee investigating the recent ministerial vetting chaos

The Chairman of the ad hoc committee investigating the recent chaos that erupted in Parliament during the vetting of some ministerial nominees, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has stated that Alban Bagbin has given the committee a timeline of 10 days to complete its work.

Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps on Thursday, February 6, 2025, he stated that the committee will resume work on Friday, February 7, 2025.

“The Speaker has given us a deadline of 10 days to complete our reports and report the same to the House. So, tomorrow we are inviting all of you to join us to continue,” he noted.

Background:

On Thursday, January 30, an altercation broke out during the vetting of Minister of Health-designate, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and Minister of Foreign Affairs-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The Minority Caucus accused the Majority Caucus of breaching an agreement to vet only four nominees for the day, which led to heated exchanges.

As tensions escalated, physical confrontations ensued, resulting in the destruction of microphones and furniture, as well as the overturning of the vetting table.

In response to the disorder, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, suspended four Members of Parliament for two weeks. The suspended MPs were Frank Annoh-Dompreh (NPP, Nsawam/Adoagyiri), Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (NDC, South Dayi), Alhassan Tampuli (NPP, Gushegu), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (NPP), Weija-Gbawe).

A seven-member parliamentary committee, chaired by Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah, was formed the Speaker to begin public hearings on February 5, 2025, to investigate the MPs’ conduct during the vetting session conducted by the Appointments Committee.

The committee is expected to bring transparency to the events that unfolded during the chaotic vetting process.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has lifted the suspension on the four MPs.

TGMAs 2025: I want to be nominated for ‘Gospel Song of the Year’ category

0

Reggae musician, Ras Kuuku Reggae musician, Ras Kuuku

Reggae Dancehall artiste Ras Kuuku has expressed his desire to be nominated in the Gospel category at the 2025 TGMAs.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Slim on Hitz FM, he disclosed that he is not only focused on the “Male Vocalist of the Year” award but also has his eyes set on the “Gospel Song of the Year” award.

When DJ Slim pointed out that the Gospel category is exclusively for gospel musicians, Ras Kuuku referenced Nacee, who is also widely recognised as a music producer.

“But Nacee is not a gospel musician. He is a producer,” Ras Kuuku said.

DJ Slim countered, stating that Nacee has equally released numerous gospel songs for which people predominantly know him.

Ras Kuuku again responded, “But he has a lot of ‘Kwen Kwen’ (political) songs too.”

He also questioned why reggae and dancehall artistes are seemingly excluded from winning gospel awards, while artistes from other genres can win in the reggae and dancehall categories.

“But we the Reggae artistes don’t have the right to win the gospel song of the year?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, the TGMA board has introduced a new award category; Best Urban/Contemporary Gospel Song.

This category recognises the most popular gospel song that seamlessly blends contemporary genres like R&B, hip-hop, and pop with traditional gospel elements.

To qualify, the song is expected to be commercially released within the year under review.

It is also supposed to garner massive public excitement and widespread popularity and must be performed by a gospel artiste.

The winner will be determined by a combination of votes from the TGMA Academy, the Board, and the general public.

It can be recalled that the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, during his vetting, stated that the John Dramani Mahama-led government intends to reintroduce the tolls, which were abolished by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

He explained that there would be no physical structures on the roads for toll collection. Instead, a technology-driven system would ensure efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

“Yes, the road toll is coming back, but not in the form of building obstructions on the road where drivers must stop and pay manually. It will be implemented using a technological platform that ensures fairness, ease of collection, accountability, and transparency regarding how the funds are utilized.

“Together with the Minister, we will develop a comprehensive policy on how the system will operate,” he stated in response to a question on the reintroduction of tolls.

In November 2021, the then Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, unilaterally abolished the collection of road tolls despite opposition from Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who described the move as illegal and called for its reversal.

The search for justice in the tragic killing of Asante Kotoko superfan Nana Pooley has taken a major step forward.

Ghana Police have arrested six suspects within four days, with the latest being a woman known as Akosua Black Chinese.

The incident took place on February 2, 2025, at Nana Koramansah II Park, where Pooley was fatally stabbed.

Since then, the Ghana Police Service has been under pressure to find those responsible.

Their quick response has led to multiple arrests, sending a strong message that justice must be served.

Among those arrested earlier were former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Joseph Kyeremeh, and Police Inspector Agyemang Duah Owusu.

While Baffour-Awuah and Kyeremeh were released on bail, Inspector Owusu has been charged with murder and remains in custody.

Two more suspects, Isaac Ofosu and Yeboah Augustine, were also arrested on February 5.

The latest suspect, Akosua Black Chinese, has been identified as Elizabeth Akosua Ntiriwaa. Authorities believe she played an active role in Pooley’s death.

Her arrest has sparked widespread reactions, particularly on social media, where many Ghanaians are calling for justice.

Social media users have expressed strong opinions about Akosua’s arrest.

Some have praised the police for their swift action, while others have demanded strict punishment for all involved.

One user described it as “the arrest of the year,” while another simply stated, “Jail her.” Many others have called for the police to ensure that justice is fully served.

With six suspects now in custody, the investigation is still ongoing.

The police are working to gather more evidence and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Inspector Owusu, one of the key suspects, is scheduled to appear in court on February 17, 2025.

Meanwhile, the case has drawn attention beyond the football community.

Some political figures have even called for the arrest of Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, linking him to the events surrounding Pooley’s death.

Only A Mentally Ill MP Will Advice His Supporters To Engage In Such A S!lly Act- Ghanaians Bash Frank Annoh-Dompreh Over Outrageous Comment

0

Ghanaians have lambasted the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority over his uncouth statement that has incited violence between NPP and NDC supporters.

The statement, which many critics have described as divisive and inflammatory, has drawn sharp criticism from a broad spectrum of Ghanaians.

During a public engagement, Annoh-Dompreh  urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise their party affiliations over fairness in disputes involving members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He said, “If you’re NPP and you find an NDC supporter fighting a fellow NPP member, help be@t the NDC!”

This remark has ignited intense backlash, with many describing it as unbecoming of a lawmaker. Critics argue that such rhetoric fosters partisanship, undermines national unity, and encourages violence rather than constructive dialogue.

One user wrote:
“Our leaders should be promoting peace, not fuelling division. This is unacceptable from someone in his position!”

Another commented:
“We need leaders who unite, not divide us. Politics should not be a battleground for hostility!”

Ghanaians have called on the NPP leadership and the Ghana Police to get Frank arrested for deliberately inciting violence and instead of promoting peace as a law maker.
