Concerned citizens of Adoagyiri Nsawam are demanding an unqualified apology from the Acting Chief Executive of the Petroleum Commission, Emeafa Hardcastle, for what they describe as derogatory and disrespectful remarks against their Member of Parliament (MP) and Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annor-Dompreh.

The call follows Ms. Hardcastle’s public remarks in which she attempted to instruct Hon. Frank Annor-Dompreh on his parliamentary duties and went as far as labeling the senior MP as “silly.”

The citizens believe that such comments constitute a direct attack on parliamentary authority and decorum, calling for strict consequences to prevent a recurrence.

Although Ms. Hardcastle has already apologized to the House of Parliament, residents of Adoagyiri Nsawam, particularly women, remain deeply displeased and are calling for a more direct apology to their community and their MP.

Speaking to the media, the outraged citizens expressed their disappointment, with many questioning Ms. Hardcastle’s conduct. “Is she married at all? If she is married, then we cry for her husband and for her in-laws. How can you do such a thing?” one visibly angry woman stated.

Another resident, Adjoa Boatemaa, was equally furious, stating, “We have voted and elected our MP. This woman doesn’t know how to talk. Let me ask, does she have a husband? For her to speak against Annor-Dompreh in that manner is a serious thing. Her husband has a job to do. She has disgraced women; she is a villager. She must apologize on her knees to Annor-Dompreh and apologize to us so we leave matters to rest.”

The women emphasized that Ms. Hardcastle’s actions are an affront to the principles of democracy and parliamentary authority.

They insist that the appropriate parliamentary consequences should be enforced to ensure that public officials uphold respect and decorum in their engagements with elected representatives.

As the controversy continues, the citizens of Adoagyiri Nsawam are firm in their stance, insisting that Ms. Hardcastle must offer a direct and unequivocal apology to both Hon. Frank Annor-Dompreh and the people of Adoagyiri Nsawam to restore goodwill and put the matter to rest.

I learned of my appointment a day before announcement – Amoakohene

0

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has shared details about his ministerial appointment, disclosing that he was informed just a day before his name was made public.

In an interview on GhOne TV, Dr. Amoakohene revealed that after the elections, he was focused on his role as the chief administrator of the party when he learned of his nomination as Regional Minister-Designate.

“I think it was a day before [the announcement] that I got wind that my name was on the table for discussion,” he recounted.

When asked about his reaction to the nomination, Dr. Amoakohene stated, “It’s the President’s decision, and it’s his government. He has worked with us and knows everyone’s strengths and what we can best contribute.”

He added, “Initially, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting a ministerial role. I was considering my age and other factors. I thought perhaps a deputy ministerial position, a CEO role, or even continuing to work within the party.”

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, a medical professional and youth leader with expertise in healthcare, governance, and public service, is now the youngest Ashanti Regional Minister in Ghana’s history.

He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Ghana, a Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science degree from the University for Development Studies (UDS), and an MBA from Accra Business School.

His appointment has been widely praised, with many believing that his extensive experience and deep understanding of the region will play a crucial role in driving growth and development in the Ashanti Region.

He must render an apology to the clerk of the committee

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor (Left) and Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor (Left) and Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has strongly criticised the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, for publicly chastising the clerk of the parliamentary Appointments Committee, calling the actions “uncalled for” and demanding an apology.

According to him, grievances against the clerk should be addressed through appropriate parliamentary channels, rather than public outbursts.

In a video shared on X by TV3 on February 3,2025, he said, “I know that when the clerk has done something that I am not happy about, there is a channel that I should take it to, that is, take it up with the clerk of Parliament. But not to stand before the cameras and behave like the way he did is uncalled for. He must render an apology to the clerk of the committee.

“The clerk of the committee deserves an apology because she doesn’t deserve those words to be used. If the clerk of the committee has given you a notice of a pre-sitting, which we do in the mornings before we start sitting, why will you be angry that the notice came too late? Sometimes, look at the time that we close and then we take a decision that this is what we’ll do the following day,” he added.

Ahiafor defended the clerk of the committee, highlighting the sacrifices made to ensure the smooth operation of the vetting process.

“So, I want the public to bear with the clerk that sometimes if we don’t close vetting, she also doesn’t close. If you close at 11, she’ll be closing at 11, whilst other clerks have gone home. But she will be there.

“So, she is really sacrificing for the Appointments Committee. So, instead of applauding her, we should not denigrate her before the cameras. No,” he added.

Ahiafor argued that concerns should be addressed privately and professionally, rather than making it public.

“We can invite the clerk to your office and tell the clerk that you have done ABCD. I’m not happy about this. Next time, that is not the way you should do it. But without even telling her that, then you just stand before the cameras and then be using those words. ‘You are partisan. I will deal with you.’

“I mean, how should those things come from a Member of Parliament? Deal with her how? How are you going to deal with her?” he quizzed.

Lord Commey’s Seized Vehicles Returned

0

The former Director of Operations at the Jubilee House, Lord Oblitey Commey, has had six cars returned after they were seized during a midnight raid on January 31, 2025.

Sources within the national security confirmed that the cars taken from Mr. Commey’s Dansoman home were soon returned after high-ranking members of the government expressed displeasure on the seizure.

The reports further stated that the vehicles’ timely release was due to the government’s anger about how some men in civilian and military clothing carried out the seizure
Mr. Commey has confirmed the return of his vehicles and expressed gratitude to senior government officials for their role in securing their timely release.

Lord Commey has had a distinguished career in Ghanaian politics, serving in various roles, including National Organizer, National Youth Organizer, and Director of Operations for the Nana Akufo-Addo campaigns in 2012 and 2016.

The swift return of his vehicles suggests that the government was keen to distance itself from the incident.

Govt planning collateral-free loans for women entrepreneurs

0

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare says the government’s proposed Women’s Development Bank, will provide women entrepreneurs with easier access to credit, including collateral-free loans.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to boost economic participation among women and youth, with policies tailored to enhance business growth and job creation.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Women and Youth Wing (GNCCI-WAY), Ofosu-Adjare emphasised the bank’s role in bridging financing gaps for women-led businesses.

“The Women Development Bank is certainly a game changer for women. This bank is going to be manned by only women. Women entrepreneurs are going to get cheap credit. They are going to get access to credit without collateral because studies have shown that when women take loans they pay back.”

Beyond the bank, the government is rolling out additional support programs, including a free apprenticeship scheme and tailored financing solutions under the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA).

Dr. Mrs. Emelia Asiakwa, First Vice President of GNCCI, highlighted the GNCCI-WAY initiative’s role in addressing key challenges such as market access and financial inclusion for women and young entrepreneurs.

“GNCCI-WAY is committed to addressing the unique challenges faced by women and youth in accessing market, finance as well as other business development services. Through it strategic efforts, the GNCCI-WAY aims to provide the necessary support to help women and youth to overcome obstacles and thrive in the business landscape.

“GNCCI-WAY seeks to promote entrepreneurship by fostering a culture of innovation and providing women and youth with the skills, knowledge and support they need to start and grow successful businesses,” she said.

Those on the side of truth and justice can’t be intimidated – Okudzeto Ablakwa jabs NPP

Minister of Foreign Affairs-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Minister of Foreign Affairs-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

The Minister of Foreign Affairs-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hit back at the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of launching baseless attacks and spreading falsehoods in an attempt to tarnish his reputation.

In a statement posted on his X page on Monday, February 3, 2025, Ablakwa criticised the NPP for missing their chance to challenge him during his vetting process.

“They had every opportunity when I appeared before them for vetting, but they chose to ran away. They had every opportunity when they were in power for 8 years to have me prosecuted but they failed because there was nothing they could find. Now they have resorted to desperate smear press conferences and infantile fabrications. If they want a second round of vetting, I am ready for them,” he indicated.

The Member of Parliament of North Tongu defended his actions as a legislator, stating that he has always acted in the interest of safeguarding public funds and state properties, which aligns with his parliamentary oversight duties.

He stressed that standing up for accountability and transparency should not be misconstrued as wrongdoing.

“It is not a crime for a Member of Parliament to patriotically and diligently seek the protection of public resources and state assets pursuant to our constitutional mandate of oversight. Those on the side of truth and justice can never be intimidated,” he added.

He reaffirmed his focus on advancing President John Dramani Mahama’s initiatives at the ministry, pointing out the reforms he is poised to implement.

“I am fully committed to supporting president Mahama’s transformative policies at the Foreign ministry,” he stated.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, he stated that he has been residing in a rented apartment at Airport Hills in Accra for the past eight years.

His admission has since drawn criticisms from the Minority.

Fred Nuamah addresses backlash over ‘fan-shaped’ Ghana Movie Awards plaques

0

Founder of the Ghana Movie Awards, Fred Nuamah Founder of the Ghana Movie Awards, Fred Nuamah

Founder of the Ghana Movie Awards, Fred Nuamah, has addressed the social media uproar surrounding the unique plaques awarded to winners at the 2025 edition of the awards.

The ceremony, held at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Saturday, January 18, 2025, saw some winners receive plaques shaped like a ‘Papa’ (a locally made hand fan) instead of the traditional gold-plated plaques, sparking mixed reactions online.

In an interview with Joy News, Nuamah clarified that the fan-shaped plaques were specifically for the Ghana TV Series Awards, a separate category under the Ghana Movie Awards umbrella.

He explained that while the Ghana Movie Awards has a trademarked gold-plated plaque, the TV Series Awards is still experimenting with its design.

“For the Ghana TV Series Awards, because we didn’t have a trademark, we started with the golden plaques, then tried something else, and now they introduced this new design. So, those who received the fan, aka the ‘Papa,’ were winners in the Ghana TV Series Awards category,” he stated.

When asked if he was aware of the design beforehand, Nuamah admitted that he only saw it on the day of the event.

He defended the creative decision, emphasising the importance of supporting local craftsmanship.

“Normally, we go to China, India, and other places for our plaques. If my team is saying they want to create something locally, of course, I support it,” he said.

Nuamah also drew a parallel to the art world, noting that creativity often transcends conventional expectations.

“You can’t challenge artists. What they see, we don’t see. For example, if you look at the Mona Lisa, it’s just a painting. The cost of the materials used might not be more than $400, but when it’s valued for sale, it’s worth billions of dollars,” he explained.

However, Nuamah acknowledged the public’s dissatisfaction with the design.

“Personally, I was okay with it because it was made in Ghana. But when people started complaining, I went back and told the team, ‘If you are giving something to people and they don’t like it, it’s okay to listen,’” he said.

Looking ahead, Nuamah confirmed that the design would be revised for future editions of the Ghana TV Series Awards.

“Most of the plaques for the Ghana TV Series Awards are temporary. We are yet to come up with a permanent design,” he added.

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II denies destoolment, files petition against alleged usurpers

0

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II

The Office of the Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area has firmly refuted claims of the destoolment of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II as the Kwahuhene, describing recent allegations as false and unlawful.

In a statement issued by the Esono Gyimah Ampong Agyei Palace, the office dismissed social media reports suggesting that Baffour Akoto Osei had been enstooled as Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, calling the claims a violation of Kwahu customs and the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759).

The controversy stems from an incident on January 25, 2025, when a group of individuals, including Nana Simpe-Owiredu III (Krontihene of Abene), Nana Asiedu Kwabeng IV (Abene Akyeamehene), and others, allegedly declared Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II destooled, and installed Baffour Akoto Osei as the new Kwahuhene.

According to the palace, no destoolment proceedings were initiated, and the actions of the group were carried out without following the proper customary and legal processes.

In a petition filed at the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Kwaku Boateng, Etena/Bretuo Ebusuapanyin of Kubease Abetifi, challenged the legality of the purported destoolment and enstoolment.

The petition argued that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II remains the legitimate Kwahuhene, as no destoolment charges were brought before a competent judicial or chieftaincy tribunal.

The petitioner also accused the respondents of violating Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act, which mandates proper procedures for destoolment.

“According to Kwahu and for that matter Akan custom, before a chief could be destooled, destoolment charges should be preferred against him and the chief should be given the opportunity to be heard in defence of those charges. Per the provisions of the Chieftaincy Act (2008), Act 759, a chief could not be destooled unless destoolmemt charges are preferred against him before an appropriate Chieftaincy Judicial Committee for the charges to be gone into.

“The respondents acted contrary to the time-honoured custom of Okwahuman as well as the provisions of the Chieftaincy Act, in purportedly declaring the Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II destooled. The acts and conduct of the respondents in purportedly declaring the Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II destooled is void ab initio,” the petition read.

The palace further revealed that the individuals involved forcibly entered the Omanhene’s palace, damaged properties, and installed Baffour Akoto Osei as the new chief.

This act, described as unlawful and criminal, has been reported to the police for investigation.

The palace referenced an affidavit from December 11, 2014, in which the Krontihene and Akyemhene of Abene confirmed that no destoolment proceedings had been initiated against Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II.

“So far as no competent judicial or chieftaincy tribunal has declared the Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II destooled or liable to be destooled, he remains the Kwahuhene. The respondents will not cease justifying whatever action they purported to have taken against the petitioner thereby interfering with Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s position as Kwahuhene unless restrained by the Honourable Committee.

“The respondents will persist in their acts of interference unless ordered by this Honourable Judicial Committee,” the petition added.

The petition seeks several reliefs, including a declaration that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II is the rightful Kwahuhene, an order to reverse the purported destoolment and enstoolment, and a perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from interfering with the Omanhene’s duties.

The palace has urged the public to disregard the false claims and reaffirmed Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s position as the legitimate Kwahuhene.

Choose capable partners for successful public-private partnership – Expert

0

Top management executive, Vish Ashiagbor Top management executive, Vish Ashiagbor

Vish Ashiagbor, a top management executive, says the successful execution of a public-private partnership (PPP) agreement is hinged on choosing a capable private partner.

The Country Senior Partner for PwC Ghana, an audit firm, said it was important for governments to understand that while the provision of public infrastructure was motivated by societal impact, the motive of the private was profit.

Mr Ashiagbor was speaking at the Stanbic/Graphic Business breakfast meeting held on Tuesday on the theme, “Public-private partnership as a financing option for sustainable development.”

He urged the government to ensure that the selection of private partners for PPP was based on the capability and credential to provide value for money and provide public infrastructure that government would have otherwise provided with scarce resources.

“Private sector that is operating a service has to meet certain performance indicators based on which they are remunerated so they cannot go to sleep and not deliver their part of the bargain,” he said.

He noted that the government must be willing to provide the support needed which could be in the form of debt guarantees and regulations for private partners to work effectively and achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

“It is a contract. And as businesspeople, we know that even outside the contributions of the PPP, if you’re in a business contractual relationship, trust, communication, and shared authority are critical for the project to work,” he said.

Cynthia Ayebo Arthur, Acting Director of Public Investment and Asset Division at the Ministry of Finance, said that continuous engagements and communication are essential to foster basic understanding on obligations and rights for public-private sector collaboration.

She noted that as the local private sector built capacities, government is becoming less reliant on external partners.

Madam De-Sylvia Boatemaa Asare, Acting Chief Operating Officer for Identity Management Systems, called for the strengthening of legal framework and improving risk assessment management to ensure that PPPs were successful.

Ghanaian politician and Chairman of Nsoatreman FC, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, has been arrested by the Bono Regional Police Headquarters following the death of a popular supporter of Asante Kotoko, Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.

Awuah, a former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, and former Member of Parliament of Sunyani West Constituency, faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder.

He is also accused of inciting fans, a factor believed to have fueled the fatal violence, according to reports by Nhyira FM.

Pooley lost his life after being fatally stabbed when chaos erupted during the Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

A confrontation between players from both teams escalated into a massive brawl in the stands as home and away fans clashed.

In response, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended the use of Nana Konamansah Park for Nsoatreman’s matches and has also halted the league while investigations continue.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been assigned to lead the inquiry into the incident.

Vetting chaos: Minority MPs unduly targeted

0

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised concerns over the suspension of three Minority Members of Parliament (MPs), arguing that the disciplinary measures have disproportionately targeted the Minority Caucus.

This follows the chaos the ensued during the vetting on Thursday, January 30, and Speaker Alban Bagbin’s subsequent suspension of three minority MPs.

In a letter to Bagbin, Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the decision to suspend three Minority MPs, compared to only one Majority MP, without due process, casts a political overtone on the Speaker’s impartiality.

“While the incident complained of is regrettable, there is a growing perception that the Minority Caucus has been disproportionately targeted in disciplinary measures.

“The decision to suspend three Minority Members—as against one Member of the Majority Caucus—without allowing them due process casts an unfortunate political overtone on the Speaker’s impartiality,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He expressed deep concern over the perceived lack of neutrality, stressing that the Speaker must remain a neutral arbiter who upholds fairness for all parties in Parliament.

“This is deeply concerning, as the Speaker must remain a neutral arbiter who upholds fairness for all parties in Parliament,” he added.

Australia-Ghana partnership key to solving Ghana’s food production challenges – Vice President

0

By Daniel Adu Darko

Accra, Feb 3, GNA-Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has emphasised the need for stronger agricultural collaboration between Ghana and Australia to help address food production challenges.

She highlighted Australia’s expertise in agribusiness and Ghana’s abundant arable lands, stating that deeper collaboration in the sector would yield mutual benefits.

Speaking during a courtesy call by Australian High Commissioner Berenice Owen-Jones, Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that a strategic partnership between the two countries could unlock long-term solutions to Ghana’s agricultural difficulties.

High Commissioner Owen-Jones, in response, revealed plans to expand the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) to Ghana.

This initiative, she said, would promote collaborative research and innovation, aligning with the Ghanaian government’s mechanised farming agenda and efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency.

Beyond agriculture, Owen-Jones also pointed out Australia’s significant mining investments in West Africa, estimated at $30 billion, with Ghana hosting a substantial share.

She expressed optimism about Atlantic Lithium’s upcoming project in Ghana, which, pending parliamentary approval, was expected to create over 900 direct jobs and boost local economies.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended Australia’s mining expertise while calling for sustainable mining practices that align with Ghana’s developmental goals.

The discussions also touched on Australia’s long-standing commitment to community development through its Direct Aid Program (DAP).

The High Commissioner reaffirmed Australia’s dedication to supporting women, children, and marginalised communities in Ghana through targeted interventions.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang praised the impact of the DAP, urging increased funding to further strengthen local community resilience.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to enhancing cooperation in agriculture, mining, and community development, with a focus on economic growth and sustainability.

Fuel prices increase for third consecutive time in 2025

0

Fuel prices have risen for the third consecutive time this year, with some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) adjusting prices upward in the first pricing window of February.

Shell has increased the price of petrol from GH₵15.59 per litre in late January to GH₵16.23, while diesel now sells at GH₵16.20 per litre, up from GH₵15.79.

Star Oil, however, has maintained petrol at GH₵14.99 per litre but raised diesel from GH₵14.99 to GH₵15.37 per litre.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) had earlier predicted slight price hikes, attributing them to rising global crude oil prices and the continued depreciation of the Cedi.

Meanwhile, Edudzi Tameklo, Acting CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has assured consumers that measures are being implemented to stabilize fuel prices and mitigate the impact of future fluctuations.

NPP leadership rejects Speaker’s directive suspending three of its MPs

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, Feb. 03, GNA – The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Monday rejected the decision by the Speaker of Parliament to suspend three of its Members of Parliament (MPs) for two weeks.

The Party said the Speaker’s directive was a flagrant disregard of the 1992 Constitution and the rules of natural justice.

This was in a statement issued by Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General-Secretary of the NPP, and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

He expressed the Party’s unflinching support to its 88 MPs and urged them to remain steadfast in ensuring accountability and transparency.

“The New Patriotic Party has learnt with scorn that the Right Honourable Speaker on Friday, January 31, 2025, unilaterally suspended three of its Members of Parliament.

“The Party hereby reiterates its position that it stands with its 88 gallant members to address all forms of repression and unfairness in the application of the rules governing Parliament and the nation,” the statement read.

The Party said it viewed the Speaker’s selective and automatic position as very dangerous, noting that the action was intended to “cow the Minority Caucus into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the Government accountable.”

On Friday, January 31, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin suspended four MPs for two weeks for their alleged involvement in a chaotic incident during a ministerial vetting on Thursday night, January 30, disrupting the proceedings.

The suspended MPs are Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (South Dayi), Frank Annor-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Alhassan Tampuli (Gushegu) and Jerry Ahmed Shiab (Weija-Gbawe).

We must apologise to Cecilia Dapaah if we accept Ablakwa’s Airport Hills rent claim – Ekow Assafuah

0

Member of Parliament for Old-Tafo Vincent Ekow Assafuah Member of Parliament for Old-Tafo Vincent Ekow Assafuah

The Member of Parliament for Old-Tafo Vincent Ekow Assafuah Esq. has stated it will be hypocritical on the part of Ghanaians to not apologize to Cecilia Dapaah if we accept Ablakwa’s Airport Hill rent claim.

At the vetting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, he revealed that he has been renting at the Airport Hills residential area in Accra for the past eight years.

Reacting to this on Kumasi-based Pure FM in an interview with Kwame Adinkrah, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, a member of the Appointments and Vetting Committee, revealed that Ablakwa lied to the committee.

He disclosed that Airport Hills residential area is owner-occupied and it will take a shrewd person to hide his ownership interest in the name of a relative.

“Airport Hills is owner occupied. Regardless, the least rent payable is US$15,000. If Okudzeto Ablakwa can afford that for 8 years, then we have to say sorry to Madam Cecilia Dapaah for having US$1 million. Otherwise, we are a nation of hypocrites,” he said.

He added: “He, Okudzeto goes around pontificating, yet he is the most unprincipled in his crusade to save the nation money. Immediately after his vetting, he flew on Business class to London. I have the manifest here.

“It will cost about GH¢120,000 to fly in business class as against economy that will be GH¢27,000 there about. If you have a person that preaches piousness in fund management and in practice does the contrary, such a person does not deserve our commendation and overall approval.”

“Senior Kwame, I can assure you that as far as Sam George and Okudzeto Ablakwa are concerned, most especially Okudzeto Ablakwa, their approval will never be a consensus. It will never happen,” Vincent Ekow Assafuah claimed.

‘You can know God without going to church’ – Mzbel opines

0

Highlife musician Mzbel has shared her experiences as a Christian, detailing the challenges she faced that led to her decision to stop attending church.

In an interview with Empress Gifty on February 2, 2025, Mzbel revealed that a pastor at one of the churches she attended frequently deceived the congregation, which ultimately influenced her decision to leave.

Mzbel, a former member of the Church of Pentecost and the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) Christ Temple, further disclosed that she also stopped attending church due to constant criticism from some members.

“I don’t attend church anymore because there was a pastor who would tell the congregation not to do certain things but would secretly do them himself. I took the church seriously, but meanwhile, if the pastor told us to fast, he would be in his office eating. His wife was the one who brought him food from home. So while we were breaking our fast at 6 PM, he would break his at 12 PM.

“It felt like there was something hidden, and I needed to find out the truth. After uncovering it, I decided not to attend church anymore,” she recounted.

Mzbel continued, “It wasn’t just one pastor, I tried three different churches before finally deciding to stop going altogether. You can know God without going to church. I was once a Pentecostal and even a Sunday school teacher. I left the Church of Pentecost because it was too strict. After that, I moved to ICGC Christ Temple, but the way I was received felt very judgmental.”

Upper East Regional Minister didn’t spray cash

Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga

The Upper East Regional Communication Bureau of the National Democratic Congress has denied media reports that the newly sworn-in Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, doled out cash to his supporters.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 3, 2025, and signed by the Communication Officer of the Regional Communications Bureau, Jonathan Salifu, it clarified that the regional minister was showing his appreciation to some traditional performers during a welcome durbar held in his honour.

“The durbar was a culturally significant and unifying event that brought together people from diverse political backgrounds, ethnic groups, and communities to welcome Akamugri in a grand procession from Pwalugu to Bolgatanga township. The celebration was marked by traditional drumming, singing, and dancing, reflecting the rich local customs and heritage.

“However, certain media reports have inaccurately portrayed a cultural practice as an act of extravagance by the Minister. To set the record straight, here are the facts; in the Upper East Region, it is customary for attendees to offer money to traditional performers as a token of appreciation. These performers are not prepaid but rely on such contributions,” it noted.

He further clarified that the money was not from the minister, but rather from the party’s Vice Chairman, Issaka Haruna.

“The money given to the performers was not Hon. Akamugri’s personal funds; it was handed to him by the NDC Regional Vice Chairman, Issaka Haruna. The amount consisted of GH₵5 notes, totaling GH₵100.

“Due to the harmattan winds, the notes were briefly scattered, creating an unintended visual impression that has been misrepresented as deliberate ‘cash spraying’,” it added.

The Bureau emphasised that this cultural practice was misinterpreted and reaffirmed the minister’s commitment to responsible leadership.

“Akamugri is widely recognised for his humility and modesty. Any suggestion of opulence or extravagant display is inconsistent with his character and values,” it added.

NAFCO boss pledges to ensure food availability and price stability

0

The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), George Abradu-Otoo, has vowed to reposition the company to ensure consistent food availability and contribute to price stability in the domestic market.

This will be done through the implementation of existing and introduction of new initiatives to curb inflation.

Currently, the country’s 13 of the top 15 inflation-driving items are food-related.

NAFCO, a wholly government-owned entity, is tasked with purchasing surplus maize, rice, millet, beans, sorghum, and soybeans from farmers, preserving these staples, and distributing them to state institutions.

Speaking exclusively to the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a handover ceremony in Accra on Monday, February 3, 2025, Mr. Abradu-Otoo, an agricultural expert, outlined his vision for the company.

“Our focus is to fulfill our mandate by ensuring greater public access to foodstuffs, storing them for the lean season, and guaranteeing fair prices for farmers,” he said.

Despite advancements over the years, food insecurity remains a pressing issue in Ghana, with the World Food Programme (WFP) estimating that over one million people in the country are food insecure, while one million children under five are chronically malnourished.

Mr Abradu-Otoo reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening NAFCO’s operations by diligently working towards supporting the Government’s reset agenda through ensuring that food security was a tangible reality for all Ghanaians.

He acknowledged that while the company’s framework appeared solid on paper, a thorough review of its operations and financials was necessary to effectively reposition the buffer stock system.

Mr Abradu-Otoo commended the outgoing CEO and the NAFCO Board for laying a strong foundation and pledged to build on their achievements.

He expressed his intention to leverage the expertise of the outgoing CEO, the Board Chair, and all relevant stakeholders to enhance the company’s role in ensuring food security.

Hanan Abdul-Wahab, the immediate past CEO, urged his successor to prioritise initiatives that would improve long-term storage infrastructure.

Addressing NAFCO staff, Mr Abdul-Wahab said, “This marks a new phase for NAFCO. Give your full support to the new leadership in the interest of Ghana.”

Reflecting on his nearly eight-year tenure, he stated that there had been expansion of licensed buying companies from 100 to 1,200 and the extension of operations to all 16 regions, up from the previous three regional centres in Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, and Northern regions.

Additionally, NAFCO’s storage capacity has grown to 100,000 metric tonnes, thanks to rehabilitation efforts and the One District-One Warehouse initiative.

The company also played a critical role in the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, supplying food items to over 700 secondary schools nationwide.
