If we decide to vote, we will win

0

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President and 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a rallying call to party members, urging them to recognize that the party’s future electoral success lies in their own hands.

He emphasised that the path to victory in future elections is clear, as the party must increase participation among its own supporters.

Speaking during the NPP’s thank-you tour, in a video shared on X by JoyNews on April 23, 2025, he said, “The fact is, we work very hard. We try to get everybody involved. As you know, the General Secretary was the Director of Operations for the campaign. The Women’s Organiser organised the women. The Youth Organiser organised the youth. The Nasara Coordinator handled the Zongo, and so on.”

He continued, “So, we tried to do as much as we could. Notwithstanding our hard work, however, we still suffered a heavy defeat. And when you look at what happened, you will see that it was internal. So, the key to victory going forward is within the NPP, it is within ourselves, because we decided not to vote. So, if we decide to vote, we will win. The key is ourselves. It is ourselves. That is what we have to understand and take forward.”

According to Dr Bawumia, approximately 2.1 million NPP supporters did not vote, significantly impacting the party’s performance.

In contrast, opposition candidate John Dramani Mahama gained around 115,000 additional votes, which made a considerable difference in the final outcome.

“Many of our supporters did not come out to vote. This is really, fundamentally, why we lost the election. 2.1 million of our supporters didn’t come out, 2.1 million. And if you look at John Mahama’s votes, his votes went up by maybe 115,000. So, he increased by 115,000, and we went down by 2.1 million. That is basically why we did not win, because we decided not to vote,” he stated.

IMF must act now – BoG Governor demands faster debt relief for Africa

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has given a stark warning about Africa’s escalating debt crisis, calling for urgent international action to prevent further setbacks to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking at the African Consultative Group Meeting in Washington, D.C., on April 22, 2025, Dr Asiama revealed that nearly half of Sub-Saharan African countries are now at high risk of, or already in, debt distress, with interest payments surpassing health and education spending in many nations.

“Many developing countries, especially in Africa, face high and rising debt levels, with a shift in creditor composition, high rollover risks, and substantial financing needs, particularly following the recent successive shocks.

“These include the COVID pandemic, geopolitical tensions, financing squeezes, and climate-related disasters. Consequently, many African countries are contending with crippling debt service obligations, with about half of Sub-Saharan African countries at high risk of, or already in, debt distress at the end of 2024,” he said.

According to the Governor, this debt distress severely affects spending for social and development among the affected countries, which is further worsened by reduced international assistance.

“This severely constrains fiscal space for essential social and development spending and hinders progress towards achieving the SDGs. Most concerning is that per capita public expenditure on interest payments in Africa has surpassed spending on health and education, exacerbated by declining overseas development assistance,” he added.

Dr Asiama urged the IMF to bolster concessional financing through tools like the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust and the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust.

“We urge the Fund to engage actively with members to secure the financing assurances needed for the distribution of GRA income

under the multi-year framework, ensuring its timely and effective implementation,” he said.

He also called for a revamped debt sustainability analysis (DSA) to better address climate risks and new debt instruments and demanded streamlined restructuring processes and private creditor participation.

“The IMF should ensure that the debt sustainability framework remains fit for purpose and effectively captures the unique vulnerabilities of developing countries, including climate-related debt risks and new debt instruments,” he said.

Dr Asiama stressed that African nations are committed to fiscal reforms but need coordinated support.

“Given the debt vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change, we call for enhanced collaborative efforts. This includes proposing ambitious yet achievable and monitorable concessional financing options, establishing joint financing mechanisms, and developing common policy frameworks,” he concluded.

0

Ghanaian fintech, Kowri, known as the way to pay, has further demonstrated why it is the way to pay. The 2-year-old fintech recently announced the launch of its groundbreaking voice command feature, setting a new standard for digital financial accessibility and convenience in the Ghanaian market.

The new voice-activated technology allows Kowri users to execute financial transactions, check balances, and manage their accounts through voice commands – a first for payment platforms in Ghana and around the Sub-Saharan region.

This innovative feature, which not only works with English but also with other Ghanaian languages, including Twi and Hausa, addresses critical needs for users with limited digital literacy, visual impairments, or those seeking faster, more intuitive banking experiences.

“We’re not just adding a feature; we’re transforming how Ghanaians interact with their financial services. Voice technology breaks down digital barriers, making financial management more inclusive and effortless for everyone,” said Claud Hutchful, CEO and one of the founders of Kowri. ”

The fintech’s mantra is around making life a lot more convenient and accessible for the average African.

“Fintechs are really about using technology to make finance more accessible. So there was no better way to demonstrate our commitment to making life easier for our customers, but also using technology which both reduces accessibility barriers for millions more as well as makes more sense for the ever-evolving digital customer.”

The company recently introduced a Scan to Pay feature that replaces the inconvenience of taking the time to type in phone numbers to send money with a seamless and instant scan action.

“In this era of very quickly changing technology landscape, it’s important to demonstrate how technology can drive the customer experience when it’s at the forefront of product development”, said Claud.

Kowri’s Voice Command Technology opens up a smarter, faster, and more intuitive way to manage your finances. With just your voice, you can now perform essential tasks on the Kowri app, making everyday transactions even more seamless in a secure environment.

With transactions possible in English and local languages, managing your finances is possible, regardless of whether a user is fluent in English or more comfortable in a local dialect, Kowri’s voice technology understands you.
The technology is compatible with most smartphones, and there’s no need for any special devices.

Currently, the voice feature supports a range of high-frequency transactions, including sending money, paying bills and airtime purchases, with a lot more on the way. Available immediately for all Kowri users, the voice command feature represents a significant leap in digital financial innovation for Ghana’s growing fintech ecosystem.

The company will, in the coming weeks, also extend this feature to merchants, enabling their customers to pay them directly with voice. Users can access this technology immediately by downloading Kowri or updating their existing app.

9th Ghana CEO Summit launched in Accra

0

The 9th Ghana CEO Summit has officially been launched at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra on Wednesday, April 23.

The Summit under the theme “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy- A Private-Public Sector CEO Dialogue & High-Impact Learning,” will, as usual, celebrate outstanding leadership in corporate Ghana.

It will take place on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Ernest Egyir, founder of the CEO Summit, emphasised the pivotal role the summit plays in shaping Ghana’s economic future.

“As our country navigates through global uncertainties and local challenges, the call for courageous, innovative, and forward-thinking leadership has never been more pressing,” he stated.

He revealed that this year’s summit will be graced by a high-profile guest, emphasising the event’s national importance.

“I’m honoured to announce that the special guest of honour for this year’s summit will be none other than the President of the Republic of Ghana, President John Mahama. His presence underlines the summit’s significance as a national platform for dialogue between the public and private sectors,” Mr Egyir said.

The Ghana CEO Summit, an annual forum that convenes chief executives, heads of state, policymakers, and investors from across Ghana and the West African sub-region, has established itself as a cornerstone for promoting strategic dialogue and driving economic transformation.

“It is where leadership meets action, where strategy meets policy, and where ideas are turned into transformation,” Mr Egyir added.

He revealed that key highlights of the 2025 summit will include major panel discussions covering critical themes such as “Resetting Ghana’s Economic Narrative,” the exclusive “Presidential Business Dialogue with CEOs” – where the President will set the tone for the summit – and the “CEO Business Keyspan,” which will showcase insights from local giants and African multinationals.

According to him, the “Digital Economy Panel” will delve into how Ghana can leverage technology to drive its next leap forward, while the “Ghana Economic Outlook Panel” will explore strategic pathways for navigating the future.

The summit aims to bring together Ghana’s top business minds and leadership figures to define strategies that will reset, renew, and reposition the country’s economy for the years ahead.

Some of these top figures include the Country Managing Partner of Deloitte Ghana, Daniel Kwadwo Owusu, the Chief Executive Officer of Petrosol Ghana Ltd, Michael Bozumbil, the Executive Chairman of the KGL Group, Alex Apau Dadey.

The Dean of the Law School, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof Kofi Abotsi, hinted at a wave of innovative programmes and initiatives to be unveiled in the coming year.

Prof Abotsi highlighted the need to sustain the relevance of platforms like the CEO Network, especially in leading national conversations on business and economic development.

“As we approach our 10th anniversary, I can assure you that there are creative and innovative programmes and products that are likely to be unveiled next year, all aimed at continuing to position the CEO Network as a central voice in business and economic discourse in Ghana,” he said.

Professor Abotsi offered a strong call to action, encouraging widespread participation in this year’s summit.

“I urge everyone to register and attend this year’s gathering as it promises to deliver unique insights into the theme of re-energising the economy,” he stated.

Touching on broader global and national issues, Professor Abotsi warned of the urgent challenges confronting the world and Ghana, including economic instability, the effects of climate change, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of work.

“Globally, we’re navigating economic turbulence, climate change is confronting us head-on, and AI is reshaping the workplace. More critically, we are facing a growing mass of unemployed youth, who risk becoming not our democratic dividend, but our democratic danger,” he cautioned.

He stressed that the employment crisis should be of concern to every corporate entity in Ghana and called for a unified response.

“I believe it is vital that all companies be deeply concerned about the employment challenge. I urge all of us to be present at the CEO Summit on 26th May, to participate and ensure that we contribute meaningfully to the development of our country,” Prof Abotsi concluded.

The 9th Ghana CEO Summit was officially launched by Moses Kwasi Baiden Jnr, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Margins ID Group.

The World Bank has pledged to assist Ghana in addressing its youth unemployment crisis by supporting a new growth and jobs strategy designed to generate employment opportunities for more than 500,000 young people entering the job market each year.

The commitment was made during a high-level meeting between the World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations, Anna Bjerde, and Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, at the Bank’s headquarters in Washington, DC today.

The discussions centred on collaborative efforts to design and implement the strategy, which prioritises job creation, skills development, and inclusive economic growth to absorb the increasing number of job seekers.

Ms. Bjerde stated, “This initiative reflects our shared priority of unlocking opportunities for young people. We are proud to work with Ghana on a strategy that will create jobs and build a stronger, more resilient economy.”

Dr. Forson expressed gratitude for the support, stressing the need for bold and targeted measures to tackle unemployment. “This partnership is a major step forward in our efforts to provide decent and sustainable jobs for our youth,” he said.

The initiative comes at a critical time as Ghana seeks to harness its youthful population for economic transformation. The World Bank’s backing is expected to bolster government efforts in fostering entrepreneurship, enhancing vocational training, and stimulating private sector growth to meet the demands of the expanding labour force.

President Mahama appoints Ebi Bright as Tema Mayor

0

Ebi Bright has been appointed as the Tema Mayor Ebi Bright has been appointed as the Tema Mayor

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Ebi Bright as the Mayor of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.

She was the parliamentary candidate for Tema Central in the just-ended 2024 general elections.

Before her appointment, some youth from Tema stormed the premises of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, demanding that an indigene be appointed as mayor instead of Ebi Bright.

The protest was marked by the burning of car tyres and the rhythmic beating of drums, aimed at sending a strong message to the authorities.

“We are here with heavy hearts to register our displeasure,” the group said.

“We are hearing that Ebi Bright is to be made the Mayor of Tema, but that is not going to happen. She wasn’t even part of the whole process, so why are they bringing her in as mayor? This is something we do not understand,” they said.

However, Ebi Bright’s team responded, stating that she is a true member of the Tema community.

She lost the parliamentary election to the NPP’s Charles Forson after initially being declared the winner in the first round of counting.

Police in northern Uganda have detained a 24-year-old teacher over aggravated homosexuality Police in northern Uganda have detained a 24-year-old teacher over aggravated homosexuality

Police in northern Uganda have detained a 24-year-old teacher over aggravated homosexuality after he allegedly abused a 10-year-old boy, a police spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The boy, a Primary Three pupil at Ayago Primary School in Lira City, reported the alleged incident after visiting the teacher, who works at Answar Mosque, on Monday, according to North Kyoga regional police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema.

Okema said the boy was with three friends when the teacher took them to his bedroom, ostensibly to watch cartoons on his mobile phone. The teacher then allegedly used Movit Jelly to sodomise the child. Afterward, he reportedly gave the boy Shs1,000 to share with his friends.

Upon returning home, the boy experienced severe pain and informed his mother, who then reported the matter to the local council chairperson. The father was contacted and subsequently filed a formal complaint at Lira Central Police Station on Tuesday.

“The suspect was arrested and detained in a police cell. Statements were recorded from the complainant, victim and witnesses,” Okema stated. He added that both the victim and the suspect have been issued police forms for medical examination.

The scene of the alleged crime was visited by police investigators.

“It’s not the first time we are registering such a case, and indeed very unfortunate,” Okema said. “As police, we pledge our commitment to seeing that the case is handled and concluded well before a court of law,” he added.

Anti-gay law

Under Uganda’s stricter anti-homosexuality laws, “aggravated homosexuality,” which includes sexual acts with a minor, carries the maximum penalty of death.

The legislation also defines aggravated homosexuality to include cases involving the transmission of life-threatening illnesses like HIV, non-consensual acts, and repeat offenders.

President Mahama appoints Dr Bawah Abdulai as new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital

Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai has been appointed as new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai has been appointed as new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr Abubakar Bawah Abdulai as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

Dr Abdulai is a senior official at the University for Development Studies (UDS).

His appointment follows the dismissal of the former CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Adam Atiku, after allegations of negligence that reportedly led to the recent death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

Dr Atiku’s the dismissal was carried out by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, following a visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, to assess the situation firsthand.

“I have formally sacked the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital with immediate effect,” Joy News quoted Kwabena Mintah Akandoh as saying.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has criticised the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for his dismissal of the CEO, which followed a heated confrontation.

In response to the incident, which has attracted widespread public attention, the GMA, the umbrella body representing medical professionals, described the minister’s actions as an “abuse of power.”

The GMA stated that the manner in which the dismissal was executed was inappropriate and failed to comply with legally required procedures.

“The GMA strongly condemns the unfortunate treatment of the doctors at the Emergency Unit of the Hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” the association said in a statement dated Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Signed by the President of the GMA, Dr. Frank Serebour, and the General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, the statement further condemned the public interrogation of a patient’s death by the minister.

I delayed the ‘Thank You Tour’ to allow the Mike Oquaye report to be concluded

2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed optimism that the recommendations outlined in the Mike Oquaye report will usher in much-needed reforms within the party.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, ahead of the party’s “Thank You Tour”, Dr Bawumia described the report as a blueprint for strengthening the party’s internal democracy and positioning it for future electoral victories.

Dr Bawumia praised the committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Ocquaye, for what he called “a comprehensive and honest assessment” of the party’s strengths and shortcomings.

“This report is not just a document; it is a call to action. The recommendations contained in it are timely and necessary for the rejuvenation of our great party,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the findings were the result of wide consultations with party grassroots, executives and stakeholders.

Highlighting some of the key reform areas, the 2024 NPP flagbearer noted that the report proposes enhanced transparency in internal elections, improved communication structures, and stronger youth engagement.

“If we are to retain the confidence of Ghanaians and inspire a new generation of patriots, then we must be bold in implementing these reforms,” Dr Bawumia added.

He also assured the party faithful that the leadership would prioritise accountability and inclusiveness in the next phase of the NPP’s growth.

The “Thank You Tour”, according to Dr Bawumia, will offer an opportunity to connect with supporters and communicate the party’s renewed vision.

He concluded with a rallying call: “Let us embrace the spirit of renewal. Let us stand together, united by our values, and move forward as one NPP – stronger and more determined than ever before.”

The event was attended by several top party executives, regional chairpersons and youth leaders.

Ghana’s economy can be transformed through agriculture – Professor Bokpin

0

Professor Godfred Bokpin, Economist Professor Godfred Bokpin, Economist

An economist, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has emphasised the urgent need for Ghana to scale up its agricultural productivity in the face of escalating global trade wars.

According to him, Ghana does not produce enough to meet its domestic needs, a challenge that threatens the country’s long-term sustenance.

He noted that current developments on the global stage should serve as a wake-up call for Ghana to make significant investments in agricultural production.

“If you look at Ghana, we’re not even producing enough to feed ourselves, let alone think about exporting. We rely heavily on imports from countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, so there’s definitely room to grow,” Professor Bokpin said.

He added, “We have the potential to transform our economy through agriculture, agribusiness, and agro-processing. Once we achieve self-sufficiency, we can then focus on exporting to neighboring countries. Africa’s food deficit runs into billions of dollars, there’s a huge market waiting.”

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its global economic growth forecast for 2025 down to 2.8%, a decrease from the 3.3% projection made in January.

This revision is largely attributed to intensifying trade disputes, particularly between the United States and its key trading partners, most notably China.

Football Offers Hope To Female Inmates In Freetown

Some beneficiaries of the initiative

After nearly four years behind bars, Marie has found hope through football. Held at the Freetown Female Correctional Centre in Sierra Leone, she joined the first-ever coaching course for female inmates, organised by the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Part of the Football for Reform initiative, the eight-day course saw 26 women and five police officers trained, earning Caf-accredited D licences to coach grassroots football.

“I’m proud to get my certificate,” said Marie, whose real name is withheld. “With this, I want to get a job.”

The programme, pioneered by former Sierra Leone Football Association president Isha Johansen, was inspired by her visit to the prison. “Ninety percent of the women were there for petty crimes,” she said. “I had to make a change—and football was the tool I had.”

Now spreading across the continent, with courses in Ghana and Liberia, the initiative is helping women reclaim their futures—one kick at a time.

Chief Justice rejects misconduct allegations, cites lack of evidence and legal standing

0

The Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, has strongly denied allegations of misconduct and incompetence levelled against her in a petition submitted to the President by private citizen Daniel Ofori, describing the claims as unfounded and unsupported by evidence.

In a detailed response addressed to President John Mahama at Jubilee House, the Chief Justice dismissed all 25 allegations—including 21 of misconduct and four of incompetence—arguing that the petitioner failed to present the necessary evidence to establish a prima facie case, as required under Article 146(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

Government, GoldFields reach agreement for Damang Mine

0

Accra, April 23, GNA – The Government of Ghana has announced that it had reached an amicable agreement with Goldfields Ghana Limited on a transitional plan for the Damang Mine.

“The operational modalities of the transition involve issuing a new 12-month mining lease to Goldfields’ subsidiary, Abosso Goldfields Limited, pending parliamentary ratification in May 2025”, a statement signed by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister in charge of Government Communications said on Wednesday.

It said, under the new arrangement, Goldfields would resume open-pit mining during the transition period, safeguarding jobs and conducting feasibility studies to establish Damang’s reserves and mine life.

“At the same time, the processing of existing stockpiles will continue under the supervision of a joint management team composed of representatives from the Government of Ghana and Goldfields. The two parties will work in good faith to secure a successful transition and eventual transfer of a viable mine to Ghanaian ownership.

“Both parties have agreed to advance discussions in good faith on the renewal of the lease for the Tarkwa mine, due in 2027, and pledged to work together to enhance Ghana’s potential in the mining sector as a favourable investment destination”, it concluded.

Earlier, the Government on April 16, 2025 announced that it had taken steps to assume operational control of the Damang Mine of Abosso Gold Fields Limited (AGL), pursuant to Section 23 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).

The move followed the expiration of the AGL’s 30-year lease due on April 18, 2025, and its unsuccessful application renewal, a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in Accra said, adding that the Damang Mine’s return to state oversight marked a critical step in Ghana’s economic reset.

Renowned investigative journalist and security expert, Raymond Archer has been named the Acting Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), 3news.com has reported.

His appointment follows the reassignment of his predecessor, Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, who has been moved to the National Security Secretariat to serve as a Technical Advisor.

While the government has not officially explained the rationale behind Dapilah’s reassignment, sources within the administration suggest it is part of a broader reshuffle across key security agencies.

Raymond Archer steps into the role at a pivotal time for EOCO, as the agency continues to spearhead efforts against economic and organised crime in Ghana.

His background in investigative journalism, particularly his expertise in uncovering financial improprieties, is expected to shape his leadership approach and strengthen the agency’s investigative capacity.

Archer’s appointment is seen as part of ongoing leadership transitions within Ghana’s security architecture, aimed at injecting new energy and direction into critical institutions.

Meanwhile, an official government statement on the recent changes is still pending.

Real QLED TV from Samsung: Mirroring real life

0

Samsung remains committed to delivering intelligent, intuitive, and seamless screen experiences to Ghanaian homes and businesses, earning its title as the unrivalled Global No. 1 TV brand for 19 consecutive years.

Staying true to its history of excellence and continuing its legacy of innovation, Samsung today leads in pushing the limits of what a TV can offer, bringing to life the game-changing Quantum Dot technology of its Real QLED TVS.

Quantum Dot is a new display technology that enables the most detailed and accurate colour expression on Samsung QLED 4K Smart TVs. While only the size of a nanometer and can’t even be seen by the naked eye, these semiconductors are powerful enough to produce a billion shades of colour for the truest depiction of the world as we see it.

Unlike other televisions falsely marketed as QLED, Samsung’s Real QLED TVs contain quantum dot sheet technology that stably controls delicate quantum dot particles and allows light made by quantum dots to spread uniformly throughout the screen. This allows Samsung QLED TVs to emit brighter whites, deeper blacks, and an exceptional colour range overall.

With 100% Colour Volume, Samsung’s Quantum Dot technology transforms light into a billion shades of lifelike colours that remain accurate regardless of the brightness level for its finest picture ever.

As a market leader in Quantum Dots development and display products, Samsung has taken bold steps in refining the technology of its QLED TVs and challenging what was previously the norm.

Recognising the potential negative environmental impact of cadmium-based quantum dot solutions, Samsung based its quantum dots on indium instead, developing the industry’s first cadmium-free quantum dots.

Apart from its safety, Samsung prides itself on the durability of its QLED TVs, ensuring that the quantum dot display is kept stable and can maintain its picture quality year after year. From excellent picture quality to durability, Samsung QLED TVs indeed make the ideal screens for premium home entertainment and business displays.

“Samsung is beyond just ‘making TVs’ we are dedicated to designing unique experiences for families and consumers that only they can get with a Samsung TV, based on in-depth research and years of innovating. When it comes to the real QLED experience, you can rely on Samsung to deliver it with unmatched quality and excellence,” remarked Lucas Lee, Managing Director, Samsung Electronics Ghana.

If you’re seeking to experience the performance of Quantum Dot technology at its best, Samsung is offering up to 20% off discounts on its QLED TVs this Easter in all authorised Samsung stores.

Low voter turnout was a protest vote – Dr Asah-Asante counters NPP narrative on 2024 election defeat

0

Political scientist Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has challenged the narrative offered by the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, regarding the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

In an interview on JoyNews‘ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 23, he argued that the low turnout among their supporters was a deliberate protest vote.

His remarks come in response to comments made by Dr. Bawumia during the launch of the NPP’s nationwide Thank You Tour, where he attributed the party’s loss to internal issues, particularly the failure of their supporters to show up at the polls.

Dr. Asah-Asante, however, believes the lack of voter participation should not be dismissed as mere disinterest but as a powerful political message from the party’s base.

“If they’ve gone to the field to pick data and introduce what their data is saying, fine. “But I hold a different view. In political science, when you expect 20 people to vote for you, and only 10 do, the remaining 10 have protested against you. It’s a protest vote.”

He explained that even though these supporters did not physically cast their ballots, their absence represented a form of indirect voting — a conscious decision to withhold support as a signal of dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership or direction.

“They knew very well that even if they had gone, the numbers would have increased — and yet they stayed away. That action, in itself, is a vote against you. It’s not that they didn’t vote; they voted with their absence,” Dr. Asah-Asante noted.

He urged the party to take a deeper introspective look at the reasons behind the loss, especially considering the dramatic reversal from the NPP’s significant electoral victory just four years earlier, with over a million-vote margin.

“Why is it that the same group of people did not want them to stay in power? That’s the real question they should be asking,” he stated.

GJA demands immediate arrest of NPP Vice Chairman over threats to journalists

0

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for the immediate arrest of Alhaji Osman Masawudu, Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing what it describes as threatening and dangerous conduct toward journalists.

This demand follows remarks made by Alhaji Masawudu during an interview on Kumasi-based Ash FM, where he allegedly issued threats of physical assault against journalists from Media General who attend NPP events.

His comments have drawn widespread condemnation from media stakeholders and press freedom advocates across the country.

The threats come on the heels of an earlier incident in which Alhaji Masawudu was captured on video forcefully pushing away a TV3-branded microphone during an NPP press briefing—a move many considered unprofessional and hostile.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour strongly condemned the NPP vice chairman’s actions, labeling them a threat to human life and democratic governance.

“The actions and comments of Alhaji Masawudu are very reckless, repressive and regrettable. His actions are not only a threat to human life, they are also a threat to the life of the rule of law and our democracy. We condemn them in no uncertain terms and call on the NPP’s National Vice Chairman to withdraw his reckless comment and apologise.”

Dwumfour also appealed to civil society organisations, the diplomatic community, and international bodies to join the GJA in demanding a formal retraction and public apology from Alhaji Masawudu.

“If the NPP National Vice Chairman fails to withdraw those reckless comments and threats, we shall hold him responsible for any attack on TV3 reporters at the party’s programme or anywhere close to the party’s office.”

The GJA revealed that Media General’s management has already reported the matter to the police and called on law enforcement to act swiftly and decisively.

“We hereby call on the police to act decisively on this case. The police must not sit unconcerned. They must not wait for the worst to happen before they act. We call on the IGP and his team to immediately invite or call for the arrest of the NPP Third National Vice Chairman.”

NPP threatens protest over suspension of Chief Justice [Listen]

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, announced that the party would embark on a series of protests to register their displeasure.

“We will agitate, we will demonstrate, and let the whole world know that President Mahama is not the man we know. He is not protecting our democracy, and the judiciary is under attack,” he stated.

He emphasized that the suspension is not just a personal affront to Chief Justice Torkornoo but an attack on Ghana’s democracy and the judiciary.

On Tuesday, April 22, President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice following consultation with the Council of State and the establishment of a committee to investigate three petitions seeking her removal.

In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency cited Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which mandates the establishment of a committee to probe allegations against a superior court judge if a prima facie case is established.

Although the move has been recognized as constitutional, it has sparked strong criticism from a section of Ghanaians.

A visit by GNA to the Keta reclaimed land on Tuesday, about 0900 hours has revealed no sign activity at the sites, while many structures that were under construction have been halted.

Some residents in the Municipality the GNA engaged applauded the Volta Regional Minister and the MCE for the timely directives to launch proper investigation into the reclaimed land saga that has sparked controversy over the years about the processes required of acquiring the land.

The residents alleged that the previous government appointees have shared the land among themselves and party faithful and that only a thorough investigation would help unfold the speculation and proper procedures to acquire such lands.

The 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted claims that his religion and ethnicity contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

Addressing party members at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, he stated that an analysis of the data revealed that, as a Muslim candidate, he outperformed the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates, even in constituencies dominated by Christians.

“I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis. And when you look at the data, the data is very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP presidential candidate performed better than the Christian parliamentary candidates.

“So, it couldn’t be. If they were voting based on religion, I shouldn’t be performing better than the Christian parliamentary candidates,” he noted.

Government revises ‘okada’ riders legal age limit from 25 to 21 years

0

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has reportedly reduced the proposed minimum age requirement for operating commercial motorcycles and tricycles, popularly known as ‘okada’ and ‘pragyia’, respectively, from 25 to 21 years.

According to the minister, the change was necessitated by public concerns over the initially proposed age limit of 25 years, Graphic.com.gh reports.

He stated that he has prepared a memo for Cabinet approval to officially revise the legal age limit from 25 to 21 years.

On April 7, 2025, during a national stakeholder consultation in Accra, Bukari Nikpe outlined a set of new, stricter regulations governing the operation of ‘okada’ and ‘pragyia’.

The initial proposal included setting the minimum legal age at 25 years, aligning it with the age requirement for commercial bus and taxi drivers.

It also introduced the issuance of commercial riders’ licences to qualified ‘okada’ and ‘pragyia’ operators, as well as a requirement to pass a proficiency test comprising oral, theoretical, and eye examinations.

Below are the initial proposed amendments under the draft Legislative Instrument (LI):

• Must be at least 25 years old

• Must possess a valid national ID

• Must hold a commercial rider’s licence issued by the DVLA

• Must pass a proficiency test (oral, theoretical, and eye exams)

• Must undergo training and be assigned a unique yellow licence plate

• Must wear a certified protective helmet with a unique number

• Must provide a helmet for passengers

• Must comply with all traffic laws and speed regulations

Additionally, the proposal outlines strict penalties: riders operating outside of licensed unions or companies could face a fine of 100 penalty units, imprisonment, or both.

How Prosper Ogum’s management style turned players against him – Enoch Morrison explains

0

Prosper Ogum (L) and Enoch Morrison (L) Prosper Ogum (L) and Enoch Morrison (L)

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Enoch Morrison has opened up about his challenging experience working under Prosper Ogum, revealing how the former coach’s rigid approach and poor communication caused tension within the squad.

According to Morrison, Ogum frequently ignored feedback, overreacted to criticism, and held grudges against players.

This revelation comes in the wake of Ogum’s dismissal from Asante Kotoko after a string of poor results that left the 2022 Ghana Premier League champions six points behind league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars.

His sacking has fueled widespread speculation among fans and analysts, with many suggesting he may have lost the dressing room.

Consequently, an old interview with Morrison discussing his struggles under Ogum has resurfaced and gained renewed attention.

In the interview with Fakye TV, the Gor Mahia midfielder criticized Ogum’s leadership style.

“For me, he’s challenging, not because he pressures the players; he does that with the club’s best interests at heart. The real difficulty comes when we express concerns. Sometimes, he tends to overreact when we voice our issues. For instance, if we suggest a different approach, he usually insists on doing things his way,” he explained.

Morrison also noted that Ogum sometimes failed to separate personal feelings from professional decisions.

“Another issue I have is his communication with the players. When someone isn’t getting playing time, or when a player says something he doesn’t like, his way of handling it can be problematic. He often takes it personally and begins to hold it against the player, which only makes things harder,” he added.

Morrison played under Ogum during the 2022/2023 Ghana Premier League season, a campaign in which Asante Kotoko failed to retain the title they had won in 2022.

How To Pack Your Natural Hair To Look Classy And Eye-catching

News Hub Creator1d

Packing your natural hair to look classy and eye-catching starts with ensuring your hair is well-moisturized and detangled, as this creates a smooth foundation for styling. Applying a leave-in conditioner and sealing with a light oil helps maintain hydration, preventing frizz and keeping your hair manageable throughout the day. Choosing the right protective style is key, as braids, twists, or buns can elevate your look while minimizing manipulation that leads to breakage. Accessorizing with headwraps, scarves, or decorative pins adds a polished touch, drawing attention to your hairstyle without overwhelming it. If opting for a puff or high bun, smoothing the edges with a bit of gel or edge control enhances neatness, giving a refined finish.

For twist-outs or braid-outs, gently separating the curls with your fingers creates volume and definition, making the style appear intentional and elegant. Incorporating satin or silk hair wraps at night preserves your style, reducing friction that causes tangles and maintaining its polished appearance. When using extensions or added hair, selecting textures that blend seamlessly with your natural hair ensures a cohesive and sophisticated look.

Lightly spritzing your hair with a hydrating mist refreshes curls and reduces dryness, keeping your style vibrant and eye-catching. Finally, confidence completes the look, as carrying yourself with assurance makes any hairstyle appear more intentional and stylish. By following these steps, your packed natural hair will not only stay protected but also exude class and charm, turning heads wherever you go.

New research study finds that Samira Bawumia substantially redefined second lady position

0

A new research study, published by a reputable and peer-reviewed international journal, has found that Samira Bawumia contributed significantly to the transformation of the second lady position during her husband’s tenure as the Vice President.

The study, which was published by Drumspeak, the International Journal of Research in the Humanities and co-authored by Prof.G. Etse Sikanku and Dr Louise Carol Donkor, sought to analyse media narratives of the second lady among selected credible media houses in Ghana.

Findings indicate that Mrs Bawumia was perceived as a stabilising force due to her decorous, spousal, motherly, gentle, no-drama and generally decent demeanour as second lady. Though she seemed to have fulfilled her traditional role as a second lady, the second highest frame unearthed was the social interventionist frame.

This frame pointed to Mrs Bawumia’s socially minded programs, particularly for young girls, women and children, that sought to equip them with skills, inspire and empower them to achieve their goals. As second lady, Mrs Bawumia was highly involved in a variety of national and international initiatives that sought to address the welfare of underprivileged girls, the youth and other vulnerable groups in society. It was not surprising that this constituted one of the most prevalent frames discovered by the authors.

Another major narrative associated with the second lady was her political role. In this role, the second lady was seen as a strong, efficient and eloquent communicator who contributed significantly to campaigns and political communication in the country.

Her voice and highly substantive political discourse marked a new phase in Ghana’s democracy, as it has become evident that second ladies can contribute meaningfully to democratic politics.

Put together, Sikanku and Donkor (2025) conclude that Samira Bawumia’s time as second lady was marked by significant change as she did not just limit herself to the stereotypical roles of political spouses but made a recognisable impact as an engaging, vocal and socially oriented advocate.

She was a very visible and effective figure on the campaign trail and also an influential second lady.

This research demonstrates that she personifies an era of extraordinary change in the role of second ladies through her unique and multitasking roles as a force of dignity, stability, but also a crucible agent of change, social welfare and public advocacy.

In terms of contribution to knowledge and the usefulness of the study, authors Sikanku and Donkor write that “This research will contribute to knowledge on the reportage of high-profile political spouses, particularly the position of the second lady, which, although elevated or expanded in stature, has not seen corresponding academic scrutiny.

This study not only fills an important gap in academic literature as it constitutes one of the earliest studies of media representation of the position of second ladies in Ghana, but also further contributes to the literature on framing and coverage of female public figures by using media from a less studied jurisdiction thereby expanding knowledge on spousal political framing and leadership.”

In a political space which is sometimes filled with drama, controversy and scandals, Mrs Bawumia’s non scandal and highly respectable time as second lady, evidently demonstrated through the media analysis, shows that she continues to be an exemplary second lady through her conduct and by so doing elevated the public participation of women in politics through her eloquent and energetic participation in political campaigns, governance, social intervention programs and advocacy.

2.1 million NPP supporters didn’t vote – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to low voter turnout among its members.

Speaking during the NPP’s “Thank You” tour on Wednesday, April 23, at the party headquarters in Accra, Dr. Bawumia revealed that approximately 2.1 million party supporters failed to show up at the polls, which he believes played a major role in the party’s loss.

“Notwithstanding our hard work, we still suffered a heavy defeat. When you look at what happened, you will see that it was internal. Many of our supporters did not come out to vote.

“This is fundamentally why we lost the election. If you look at 2020 vis-à-vis 2024, 2.1 million of our supporters did not come out to vote. So, the key to victory is within the NPP because we decided not to vote. So, if we decide to vote, we will win,” he said.

The 2024 presidential election, held on December 7, saw a fierce contest between the two leading candidates, Dr. Bawumia of the NPP and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

On Monday, December 9, the Electoral Commission (EC) declared John Mahama the winner of the presidential race. He secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid ballots cast. His main contender, Dr. Bawumia, garnered 4,657,304 votes, amounting to 41.61%.

Mahama’s return to the presidency also marked a significant victory for the NDC, which clinched a majority in Parliament, consolidating the party’s strong comeback to power.

Names of petitioners, allegations against Chief Justice and her responses emerge

0

The identities behind the three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo have surfaced following her suspension by President John Mahama.

Additionally, the full contents of the petitions and Justice Torkornoo’s responses have also emerged, although the constitution stipulates that all proceedings related to such petitions should be held in camera.

The petitioners have been identified as Kingsley Agyei, convener of Shining Stars of Ghana; lawyer and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo; and Daniel Ofori.

The petitioners accused the Chief Justice of stated misbehaviour and incompetence, citing Article 146(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which reads: “A Justice of the Superior Court or a Chairman of a Regional Tribunal shall not be removed from office except for stated misbehaviour or incompetence, or on grounds of inability to perform the functions of his office arising from infirmity of body or mind.”

They argued that the Chief Justice would not restore public confidence in the
judiciary as a result of her demonstration of incompetence and stated misbehaviour and therefore must be removed from that high office.

Meanwhile, President Mahama has set up a five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, a Justice on the Supreme Court bench to handle the inquiry.

Other members are Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, also a Justice on the Supreme Court bench, who was appointed in 2022.

Others in the five-member committee are Mr Daniel Yaw Domelevo, a former Auditor-General, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, an associate Professor at the University of Ghana.

However, there is no timeline on when the inquiry would be completed.

You don’t embark on a ‘Thank You Tour’ after a colossal defeat – Amoako Baah tells NPP

0

Political scientist Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its planned “Thank You Tour” following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Amoako Baah, in an interview on JoyNews‘ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 23, questioned the appropriateness of the tour, after a “colossal defeat” in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“What is going on is not good. When you lose this colossally, you don’t go on a Thank You Tour. No, thank you for what? For not voting for me?

“Instead, you say, ‘Sorry, forgive me.’ That’s what you do in this instance — and it’s not just for the flagbearer; all the party people should be doing that,” he insisted.

His comments come just hours after the NPP officially launched its Thank You Tour at the party’s national headquarters in Accra.

The tour, led by the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, April 26, and will see the party leadership traveling across the country to express appreciation to its supporters.

Dr. Bawumia, the sitting Vice President during the elections, was defeated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and now-President, John Dramani Mahama, in a landslide victory. The NPP also lost several key parliamentary seats, reducing its influence in the legislature.

Dr. Amoako Baah has long been an outspoken internal critic of the NPP and has previously urged the party to undertake serious introspection and reform following its electoral setbacks.

However, the Director of Communications for the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that the scheduled thank you tour, which former Vice President is to embark on, is aimed at reorganising the party’s members.

According to Mr Ahiagbah, the 2024 defeat can largely be attributed to party supporters not coming out to vote and the thank you tour is intended to serve as a bridge to correct the mistakes made.

“We are telling you that one of the key things the former Vice President highlighted is that our people didn’t come out to vote. This thank you tour is designed to governise the party, address the issues that need to be fixed, and to truly regenerate our party, reignite our passion, and work towards returning the party to power,” he said.

National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and the Muslim Community in Ghana have expressed condolences to the Catholic Church upon the death of Pope Francis, which sad incident occurred on Monday.

In a release signed by his Personal Assistant, the spiritual leader stated that “the Islamic Community has been thrown into a state of sorrow over the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis on April 21, 2025.

“His Eminence, therefore, extends condolences to the leadership of the Catholic Church in Ghana and the Vatican, as they mourn the Bishop of Rome.”

Continuing, he said “the passing of the Pontiff is a great loss to the global interfaith community, particularly the Abrahamic fraternity. And the world would, forever, remember an icon whose voice helped shape international order in many areas of life: from moral leadership to human rights championship.

“Throughout his papacy, His Eminence observes, Pope Francis stood for the marginalised. It was, therefore, not surprising that on the eve of his departure to eternity, he called for an end to the atrocities in Gaza.”

The revered Mufti further hailed Pope Francis for striking a reasonable balance between orthodoxy in service to God and modernity in service to humanity.

It is the hope of the venerable Imam that the Pontiff’s legacy of love for the environment would continue to inspire confidence in the global fight against climate crisis.

The Chief Imam prayed for a peaceful Papal Conclave that would produce a successor of equal honour.

Rescue yourself – MzGee shares inspiring journey of resilience

0

At just 18, fresh out of secondary school and grieving the loss of her mother, MzGee found herself thrust into adulthood, with four younger dependents and no safety net. On her show Gee O’Clock, the celebrated media personality opened up about her difficult beginnings and how those early struggles shaped her unyielding drive to succeed.

“I didn’t know jack,” she recalled, “but I knew I had to be my own rescue.”

With her father living abroad and relatives unable to step in, MzGee became the default caregiver and pillar of support for her younger siblings and cousin. The emotional and financial weight was immense, yet it became the catalyst for her grit and determination.

After staying home to resit her exams, she made the tough decision in 2004 to leave her siblings and return to school. It was a step forward, not just in her education, but in reclaiming her dreams.

Her media journey began in 2007 when she auditioned for a reality show—an opportunity that didn’t lead to a win, but kept her moving. Between then and 2014, MzGee took on unpaid internships and roles that offered experience, not income.

“I worked at places I wasn’t paid,” she said. “Sometimes all I had was hope and a strong sense of purpose.”

In 2014, while working at a front desk in a corporate job, a serendipitous moment changed the course of her life. She met sports journalist Nathaniel Attoh, who helped arrange a meeting with music executive Mark Okraku-Mantey, who was at the time the Programs Manager of Accra-based Hitz FM. The only available slot? A production assistant role—unpaid.

“Did I have a choice? I needed to rescue myself,” she stated.

MzGee accepted the offer and began working long hours without a salary for over a year and a half. The sacrifices were significant, but so was her commitment. She leaned on friends, supportive family members, and the occasional tip from bosses to stay afloat.

Her journey into media was not paved with comfort or privilege. It was built on sacrifice, persistence, and a belief that no one was coming to save her—so she had to show up for herself.

Now, with over a decade of experience and a strong presence in Ghana’s media landscape, MzGee is living proof that the power to change your story lies within.

“You need to acknowledge that there is a challenge,” she urged the public. “And you need to be ready to rescue yourself.”
