Trump administration set to close down numerous US embassies with 60% in Africa

0

US President Donald Trump US President Donald Trump

The Donald Trump administration is said to be proposing major cuts to the United States (US) State Department’s budget, with plans to reduce it by over $30 billion, more than half, for the 2026 fiscal year.

According to CNN journalist Larry Madowo, this cost-cutting initiative includes the closure of up to 30 US diplomatic missions worldwide, with around 60% of the affected posts located in Africa.

In a video shared on his X platform on April 17, 2025, Madowo cited an internal memo indicating that the Trump administration intends to shut down at least 27 diplomatic missions, including both embassies and consulates, primarily in Africa and Europe.

The said memo also outlines plans to transition some missions to lower-cost operational models and consolidate multi-mission posts, such as the one at UNESCO in Paris.

These proposed closures are part of a broader strategy to reduce foreign aid by nearly 75% and restructure the US diplomatic corps in line with the administration’s “America First” agenda.

Among the African countries likely to see embassy closures, if the plan is approved, are South Sudan, Lesotho, The Gambia, Eritrea, the Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.

“They also want to shut down the consulates in Douala in Cameroon and in Durban, South Africa, and reduce the size of the mission in Mogadishu, Somalia,” Madowo reported.

While the proposal remains under review and has yet to be finalised, the US State Department, the White House, and the Office of Management and Budget have not issued any official comments on the matter.

Meanwhile, the potential impact of these closures is significant, especially in Africa, where US embassies play vital roles in diplomacy, development aid, and regional security cooperation.

Critics have warned that reducing the US diplomatic footprint could weaken American influence on the continent at a time when global competition for strategic partnerships is intensifying.

The proposed downsizing is however expected to also spark concern among diplomats, lawmakers, and international partners, who fear long-term consequences for US foreign policy and global engagement.

No global recession despite US tariffs

0

IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva

Trade tariff uncertainty is “literally off the charts” but there will not be a global recession, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.

The international economic group said in its forecast for the world economy that global share prices have dropped “as trade tensions flared” and warned about an “erosion of trust” between countries.

However, it stopped short of predicting a worldwide recession, saying “our new growth projections will include notable markdowns, but not recession”.

The comments come as leaders and businesses respond to US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs announced on 2 April.

Global stock markets plummeted following the announcement and many have not recovered since – with the FTSE 100 index of the largest firms listed in the UK still 4.6% lower than a month ago.

Meanwhile, predictions of a global recession have risen as firms slash spending and investment amid the uncertainty and some countries respond to Trump with tariffs of their own.

On Wednesday, the World Trade Organization (WTO) forecast that global trade will fall this year because of Trump’s tariffs.

It follows similar comments from the Bank of England, which has said that rising trade tensions from tariffs have “contributed to a material increase in the risk to global growth” and financial stability.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank (ECB) said on Thursday it had reduced its key interest rate “owing to rising trade tensions”.

But the IMF’s outlook is rosier by contrast. “[This] is a call to respond wisely,” said IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva on Thursday.

“A better balanced, more resilient world economy is within reach. We must act to secure it.”

She added “all countries must redouble efforts to put their own houses in order” in response to the uncertainty.

She specifically called on Europe to cut down on “restrictions on internal trade in services” and “deepen” its single market.

She also said China needs to increase its social safety net so that there is less “precautionary saving” and said the US government needs to reduce its debt.

CAF fines its president’s club after African Champions League fan disorder

President of the Confederation of African Football Patrice Motsepe talks to media President of the Confederation of African Football Patrice Motsepe talks to media

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined its president’s club $100,000 after violent fan clashes at an African Champions League game between two teams that are going to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this summer.

Mamelodi Sundowns, owned by Patrice Motsepe – a South African mining billionaire and FIFA vice president – breached safety and security rules hosting an April 1 game against Esperance of Tunisia, CAF said in a disciplinary ruling late Thursday.

Motsepe has been president of African football’s governing body CAF for four years and was re-elected unopposed last month.

The African football body said Sundowns “is required to strictly implement the safety and security measures specified in the CAF regulations, guidelines and directives, particularly in their upcoming matches”.

Esperance was fined $150,000 for the fan misconduct, CAF said, related to clashes in the stands at the quarterfinal, first-leg game.

Sundowns won the first leg 1-0 in Pretoria and advanced to the semifinals after the return game ended 0-0 in Tunis one week later. The South African team on Saturday hosts Al Ahly of Egypt – another Club World Cup team – in the first leg of the semifinals.

Sundowns and Esperance are both coming to the US in June as two of Africa’s four entries in the first 32-team Club World Cup organised by FIFA.

Both qualified because of consistently good results over four years in the CAF Champions League through 2024.

Sundowns has been drawn in a Club World Cup group with Ulsan of South Korea, Borussia Dortmund of Germany and Fluminense of Brazil, playing games in Orlando, Cincinnati and Miami.

Esperance is in a group with Chelsea of England, Brazil’s Flamengo and a third team that was to be Leon, which FIFA disqualified because it is in the same ownership as another Mexican team that qualified, Pachuca. Those games are in Philadelphia and Nashville.

Leon has a May 5 hearing with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Madrid in its appeal against FIFA’s ruling. The Club World Cup is played in 11 US cities from June 14 to July 13.

Passengers stranded at neoplan station amid vehicle shortage for Easter travel

0

Dozens of passengers travelling to Kwahu, Kumasi, and other parts of the country for the Easter festivities have been left stranded at the Neoplan Station in Accra due to a severe shortage of available vehicles.

On Friday, April 18, Channel One News observed long queues of frustrated commuters who had waited for hours without success. Many passengers expressed deep concerns about the lack of adequate transport arrangements despite the high demand typically associated with the Easter season.
One of the stranded passengers, Alex, who was heading to Techiman, shared his frustration.

“I have been here since morning, around 7:30 am. I am going to Techiman, and there is no car. When you ask the station masters, they say that there are cars on the way, so we should wait, and up till now we have not seen any cars. And this is very troubling and very stressful.”

Another commuter, Queen Mira, echoed similar concerns, lamenting the uncertainty surrounding vehicle availability.

“I have been here since 7 am, and we are told the bus is on the way, but nothing is showing that there is a bus coming. It is a big problem for us.”
As the situation persisted, drivers at the station joined in voicing their grievances. They appealed to the government to step in by providing additional buses during festive periods to help manage the seasonal rush and ease the burden on both passengers and transport operators.

Kennedy Owusu Adei, one of the drivers, noted the challenges on the ground.

“Everything is going on well, but we do not have many cars to transport the passengers to their destination. For festivals like this, I guess the government can come in and provide some buses to aid in easing the tension.”

Prince Ashitey, another driver, noted that beyond the shortage of vehicles, the poor road conditions further worsen the travel experience for both drivers and passengers.

“There are a lot of people here heading to Kwahu, but there are not enough cars to convey them. The road is very bad as well, and before you drive here to Nkawkaw, you’re tired already. We are pleading with the government to come and help us.”

Accra, April 17, 2025 — The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned alleged threats of assault made by Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, a panelist representing the Movement for Change, against Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen, Deputy Director of Communications for the NPP.

The incident reportedly took place during a live broadcast of United Television’s (UTV) Adekye Nsroma morning show, drawing swift criticism from the NPP and other observers concerned about the tone of political discourse.

In a statement signed by the NPP’s Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, the party expressed grave concern and underscored the need to protect women’s participation in political dialogue, particularly in media spaces.

“Ghana has made significant strides in driving women’s political participation and amplifying their voices in our national discourse. Threats of assault or actual assault on women for expressing their political views must not be tolerated,” the statement emphasized.

Call for Accountability and Respect in Media Spaces

The NPP urged all media outlets, including UTV, to uphold democratic standards of civility and respect, and to ensure their platforms do not become conduits for intimidation or abuse, especially against women.

The party further stressed that the progress Ghana has made in gender inclusivity in politics must be safeguarded through collective vigilance and responsible conduct.

“We must all work together to preserve the dignity of our democratic space and ensure that everyone—especially women—can speak freely without fear of harassment or violence,” the statement concluded.

‘Settle the debate about Ghana’s founding fathers’ – Haruna Iddrisu to curriculum review committee

0

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the newly established 13-member curriculum review committee to address the longstanding confusion over who truly founded Ghana.

Speaking at the committee’s recent inauguration, he expressed concern that, 68 years after independence, the country still lacks consensus on its founding history.

“Anyone who abandons their past and history loses their way to the future. I’m told this is why we must be intentional about how we teach our children about Ghana’s rich and complex history. So, I’m at a loss that at 68 years, we are still grappling with who the founders of Ghana are, who the founding leader is, or who the founding father was,” he said.

He continued, “This must be a settled matter. In every country, there are founding fathers. It is reasonable to conclude that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is a founding leader of Ghana. But if, at this age, we still have children asking their parents, ‘Who is the founder of Ghana?’ or ‘Who are the founders of Ghana?’ then there’s a problem.”

Iddrisu stressed the importance of giving children a clear understanding of the nation’s origins.

“At six to eight years old, you shouldn’t be asking who birthed you as a country. I’m sure many of those currently instigating this debate were themselves students of history. Your review of the curriculum must put an end to this issue.”

“I don’t want Ghanaian children to grow up not knowing who their founding fathers were or who their foundational leader was. I expect your review to settle this debate once and for all,” he added.

The controversy resurfaced following an address by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Founder’s Day, during which he dismissed the idea that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was solely responsible for Ghana’s independence.

“I speak to you this evening rejecting completely the notion that Ghana was founded by one man. While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations,” Akufo-Addo stated.

His remarks reignited debate, with many questioning the extent of Nkrumah’s role in Ghana’s independence and whether other key figures deserve greater recognition.

Google has illegal online advertising monopoly

0

A US judge has ruled tech giant Google has a monopoly in online advertising technology.

The US Department of Justice, along with 17 US states, sued Google, arguing the tech giant was illegally dominating the technology which determines which adverts should be placed online and where.

This is the second antitrust case Google has lost in a year, after it was ruled the company also had a monopoly on online search.

Google said it would appeal against the decision.

“Publishers have many options and they choose Google because our ad tech tools are simple, affordable and effective,” the firm’s head of regulatory affairs Lee-Ann Mulholland said.

US district judge Leonie Brinkema said in the ruling Google had “wilfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts” which enabled it to “acquire and maintain monopoly power” in the market.

“This exclusionary conduct substantially harmed Google’s publisher customers, the competitive process, and, ultimately, consumers of information on the open web,” she said.

Google lost on two counts, while a third was dismissed.

“We won half of this case and we will appeal the other half,” Ms Mulholland said.

“The court found that our advertiser tools and our acquisitions, such as DoubleClick, don’t harm competition.”

The ruling is a significant win for US antitrust enforcers, according to Laura Phillips-Sawyer, a professor at the University of Georgia School of Law.

“It signals that not only are agencies willing to prosecute but also that judges are willing to enforce the law against big tech firms,” she said.

She said the verdict sets an important legal precedent and is likely to affect decision-making in corporate America.

Google’s lawyers had argued the case focused too much on its past activities, and prosecutors ignored other large ad tech providers such as Amazon.

“Google has repeatedly used its market power to self-preference its own products, stifling innovation and depriving premium publishers worldwide of critical revenue needed to sustain high-quality journalism and entertainment,” said Jason Kint, head of Digital Content Next, a trade association representing online publishers.

‘Structural changes’

Google owns large companies on the buyer and seller sides of the online advertising market, as well as an ad exchange which matches demand and supply.

Internet users will not notice a difference online as a result of the decision, said Anupam Chander, professor of law and technology at Georgetown University.

But it affects “the division of monies between advertisers, publishers, and ad service providers”.

“The judge seems willing to order structural changes in Google’s ad exchange practices, which may affect Google’s bottom line somewhat, but don’t seem to necessarily threaten its core value proposition as an advertising middleman,” he added.

In an ongoing series of antitrust lawsuits, the US government argues Google and its parent company Alphabet should be broken up – which could include selling off parts of the company such as the Chrome browser.

The US case will now move to a second “remedies” phase, which could also lead to Alphabet being broken up, said John Kwoka, a professor of economics at Northeastern University.

In September, the UK’s competition watchdog provisionally found Google was using anti-competitive practices to dominate the market for online advertising technology.

Black Stars’ success driven by national motivation, not technical team – Ernest Norgbey

0

Players of the Black Stars Players of the Black Stars

The Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth, Sports, and Culture, Ernest Norgbey, has offered a unique perspective on the recent success of the Black Stars.

After enduring a challenging period, including failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Black Stars bounced back with spirited performances against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

With a new technical team in place, the squad secured six crucial points, significantly boosting their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

However, despite these achievements, Norgbey, in an interview with GH One TV, attributed the team’s success not to technical expertise but to strong motivation and the uplifting national spirit surrounding the squad.

“Personally, the success of the Black Stars is not because of technical expediency. I believe it is due to the motivation and aura of the country. I cannot attribute it to the technical bench,” he said.

Following the two critical wins against Chad and Madagascar, the Black Stars now sit atop the group standings with 15 points, three points ahead of second-placed Comoros.

Bangladesh renews call for apology, reparations from Pakistan over 1971 war atrocities

0

Bangladesh has formally demanded a public apology from Pakistan for atrocities committed by the Pakistani military during the 1971 war, which led to the country’s independence.

The demand was put forward during a high-level diplomatic meeting held in Dhaka on Thursday, marking the first such engagement between the two nations in 15 years. The discussions touched on long-standing unresolved issues between the two countries.

In addition to the apology, Bangladesh is also seeking financial reparations totalling $4.52 billion from Pakistan. The claims cover Bangladesh’s share of pre-independence Pakistan’s foreign reserves, unpaid provident funds owed to public servants, and unsettled foreign aid commitments dating back to the country’s liberation.

“We raised the historical unsettled issues with Pakistan, including a formal public apology for the atrocities committed during the 1971 liberation war and the pending financial claims,” Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin told reporters after the meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Amna Baloch.

He added, “Pakistan has assured us of continued engagement on these matters. Resolving them is essential to laying a strong foundation for our bilateral relations.”

While Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary, Amna Baloch, who arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday for a diplomatic visit, did not make any public statements during her trip, officials noted that the tone of discussions remained cordial.

Another key issue raised by Dhaka was the repatriation of more than 324,000 stranded Pakistanis, mostly referred to as “Biharis,” who have lived in refugee camps across Bangladesh for over five decades since the end of the war.

According to Bangladeshi estimates, the nine-month conflict in 1971 resulted in the deaths of approximately 3 million people and left lasting scars that continue to influence the countries’ bilateral relationship.

The latest round of talks is seen as a significant opportunity to address these long-standing grievances and rebuild diplomatic ties between the two South Asian nations.

Edward Bawa attributes Ghana’s oil production decline to structural failures

Edward Bawa is the Group CEO of GOIL PLC play videoEdward Bawa is the Group CEO of GOIL PLC

Group CEO of GOIL PLC, Edward Bawa has raised concerns over Ghana’s declining oil production, attributing the issue to deep-rooted structural challenges within the sector.

Speaking at an oil and gas forum in Accra on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Bawa revealed that Ghana’s oil production has dropped by more than 25 percent in recent years.

“Let’s not deny or pretend that the situation in Ghana today is not good. It’s not good because if we look at the data from 2019 to now, production has declined by about 25%,” he said.

Bawa’s remarks underscore the urgent need for reforms and investment to address the obstacles hampering the country’s oil output and to ensure long-term sustainability.

He further explained that the decline in production is primarily due to underinvestment and inefficiencies, noting that some license holders have failed to effectively develop or utilise their allocated resources.

“This has been caused by various factors, underinvestment and cases where even those holding licenses are not actively developing resources,” he added.

Bawa was first appointed Acting CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in January 2025 by President John Mahama, before he was later reassigned as GOIL Group as CEO in February 2025.

“Kotoko is coming to play in Kumasi after losing to Accra Lions. They are our senior brothers, and here [Abrankese] is their home, so it will be a difficult game,” he said. “But we want to build on our current form and results. It will not be easy, but the better side will win.”

Responding to concerns about Kotoko’s individual talents, particularly top performers like Albert Amoah, Mingle insisted his team is not fazed.

“Albert Amoah and co all played in the first leg, and we won. They are players, and we have comparable players here too, so we don’t fear any player at Kotoko,” he stressed.

While acknowledging Kotoko’s experience, he reiterated his faith in his own players: “Kotoko have more mature players than my team, but it is football, and as I always say, the better side will win.”

Nations FC, who won the reverse fixture 0-2, are unbeaten against Kotoko with two wins and a draw in their three top flight meetings.

Ama Endorsed might still be alive if she had a Prophet backing her – Prophet Eric Boahen claims

The General Overseer of Creator’s House Chapel, Prophet Eric Boahen Uche, has stated that social media influencer cum entrepreneur, Ama Endorsed might still be alive if she had a prophet in her life.

According to him, the 29-year-old influencer, popularly known as “The Lady Carpenter”, may have avoided her untimely death had she been under proper spiritual covering.

Ama Endorsed’s sudden passing on April 17, 2025, has since left many netizens in shock, sparking an outpouring of tributes and reactions from the public, including several notable personalities.

Sharing his thoughts on the tragic development, Prophet Boahen emphasised the importance of having a prophet in one’s life, explaining that they do not only serve as spiritual guides but also as protectors.

He further explained that prophets offer divine insight and can intercede through prayer, potentially shielding individuals from harm.

According to him, prophetic covering provides a spiritual defence that, in some cases, can prevent tragic outcomes, such as what happened to Ama Endorsed.

“Today, I came across a beautiful young lady on social media. Although I don’t know her personally, I felt a deep sadness. I believe that if she had a prophet guiding her, she might still be alive.

“Prophets provide a unique form of protection. It’s unlikely that someone under the special protection of a prophet would meet such a fate,” he stated.

Prophet Boahen further indicated that the social media influencer’s death might have been caused by someone within her own circle stating that there might be a possibility of envy from close relations or associates.

“Often, those who envy us come from our own circle. If we examine the circumstances surrounding her death, it would likely be that someone close to her might be involved. It’s crucial to take your prayer life seriously,” he added.

Trump administration to shut down dozens of US embassies, 60% in Africa

A joint large-scale operation conducted on Thursday by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission at six illegal mining sites near Samreboi in the Western North Region has led to the arrest of 26 individuals involved in illegal mining activities, locally known as galamsey.

According to police sources, the sites are allegedly linked to Akonta Mining, a company reportedly owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The raid resulted in the arrest of 26 individuals, including six Chinese nationals, two Koreans, and 18 Ghanaians.

Additionally, 18 excavators used in the illegal mining operations were seized and placed in police custody.

Providing an update on Friday, April 18, 2025, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, revealed that five of the excavators were left behind due to what he described as “mobility challenges.”

“On the eve of Good Friday, just after wrapping up my working visit to the Ashanti Region, I joined an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service on behalf of the Forestry Commission of Ghana in a raid of about six illegal mining sites allegedly belonging to Akonta Mining (which is believed to be owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi) in Samreboi, Western North Region.

“The exercise resulted in the arrest of 6 Chinese, 2 Koreans, and 18 Ghanaians. A total of 8 excavators were also taken, while 5 were abandoned at their locations due to mobility challenges,” he stated in a Facebook post.

Other equipment, including three vehicles, motorbikes, and various mining tools, were also seized and taken into custody.

Utility tariff hikes tied to current IMF program – Finance minister clarifies

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has clarified that the recent increases in electricity and water tariffs are part of Ghana’s obligations under its ongoing program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

His comments come in the wake of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) announcement of a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs and a 4.02% rise in water charges, both set to take effect on May 3, 2025.

Dr Ato Forson, speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 explained that the tariff adjustments were a requirement for Ghana to access the next $370 million tranche under the IMF deal.

“We have begun the implementation, which you recently saw, the quarterly adjustment by PURC, which was supposed to have been done by last year. But we have ensured that it has been done in line with the statutory benchmark as agreed in the third review,” he explained.

Dr Ato Forson also responded to growing speculation about a possible renegotiation of Ghana’s agreement with the IMF, making it clear that the government has no intention of revisiting the terms.

“Renegotiating presupposes that you don’t believe in the program, and so you want to open up the conversation to look at other parameters of the program. That isn’t the position of the government. The government is committed to the implementation to achieve the objectives of the IMF program,” he said.

The finance minister further acknowledged that although some structural benchmarks and quantitative targets were missed prior to the current administration taking office, the government remains focused on meeting the program’s goals moving forward.

‘Unprogressive, primitive conduct’ – NPP slams Hopeson Adorye over threats of attack on its communicator

0

Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen (L) and Hopeson Adorye (R) Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen (L) and Hopeson Adorye (R)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the alleged threats of physical assault made by Hopeson Adorye, a former party member and current affiliate of the Movement for Change, against one of its executives during a live panel discussion.

In a statement dated April 17, 2025, and signed by its Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP addressed the incident, voicing strong disapproval and concern over the conduct of Hopeson Adorye.

The party emphasised that such behaviour has the potential to undermine the significant progress made in promoting and empowering women’s participation in politics.

“We condemn Mr. Adorye’s actions in no uncertain terms. Ghana has made significant strides in driving women’s political participation and amplifying their voices in our national discourse. Therefore, threats of assault, or actual assault, on women for expressing their political views must not be tolerated,” the statement read in part.

The statement further emphasised the importance of upholding Ghana’s long-standing and cherished democracy, which is founded on the principles of tolerance and free expression.

It criticised Hopeson Adorye’s attempt to silence Jennifer Queen during her submissions, describing it as contrary to the democratic values the nation upholds.

“Tolerance has been a key element in Ghana’s democracy, and we should continue to promote tolerance and respect for all in our national discourse.”

The party described the incident as “unprogressive, undemocratic, and primitive conduct,” and called on media outlets to take proactive steps to prevent such attempts to suppress free speech on their platforms.

“We urge United Television and other media houses to guard against such unprogressive, undemocratic, and primitive conduct on their shows. This is a democracy, and people’s rights to free speech and expression must not be curtailed under any circumstances,” it concluded.

A fiery confrontation unfolded on UTV’s Morning Show, Adekye Nsroma, on April 17, 2025, between Jennifer Queen, a Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Hopeson Adorye, former Deputy National Security Coordinator and now a member of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change.

The clash stemmed from repeated interruptions during the show’s discussions.

In a video shared on social media, Jennifer Queen was heard accusing other panel members, including Hopeson Adorye, of interjecting while she spoke. She vowed to reciprocate by interrupting them when they had the floor.

Hopeson then urged the host to allow another panelist to speak, claiming Jennifer had concluded her submission.

This sparked a heated exchange, during which Hopeson claimed he had trained Jennifer in communication, a remark that did not sit well with her and led to a verbal altercation.

“I trained her in communications,” Hopeson asserted.

Jennifer responded sharply, “You trained who? You’ve told all your people that you trained me, and they are mocking me… If God repaid evil, you wouldn’t be alive by now.”

Tensions escalated further when Hopeson angrily asked Jennifer if she was insane for raising her voice at him.

“Are you mad?” he questioned.

Jennifer fired back, “Am I mad? Like how? You can’t leave your wife there and come here to insult me.”

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has provided a detailed account of its recent crackdown and the subsequent arrest of individuals involved in a human trafficking operation in Oyarifa, a suburb of Accra.

Speaking to the media following the operation, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of EOCO, Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, revealed that the suspects lured their victims into the country under false pretenses, promising them well-paying jobs.

“The victims were lured into the country by the suspects ostensibly to give them lucrative jobs in Ghana,” he said.

Dapilah further disclosed that the victims, who are all foreign nationals from neighboring countries, were tricked into abandoning their livelihoods and families in search of better living conditions in Ghana.

However, upon arrival and realizing they had been deceived, the victims were unlawfully confined and held against their will.

He added that they were later forced by their captors to engage in various criminal activities, including cybercrime.

“Unfortunately, since there were no lucrative jobs, the suspects took the victims hostage, confined them at the Oyarifa estates, and forced them into cybercrime and related activities,” he explained.

In a joint special operation carried out by EOCO, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and National Security, 35 individuals suspected of human trafficking were arrested.

The operation also led to the rescue of 219 persons who had been subjected to forced labor and other inhumane conditions.

The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso Constituency, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to complete the Agenda 111 hospital projects if he truly cares about Ghana’s health sector.

According to him, completing these projects will bring healthcare delivery to the doorsteps of Ghanaians.

The MP expressed concern over the perceived lack of commitment from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration to continue the project.

Professor Nyarko believes that government is a continuous process, and therefore, the NDC administration should work on the project given its potential to benefit ordinary Ghanaians.

On Thursday, April 17, 2025, Professor Nyarko presented items worth over GH¢100,000 to the Kwadaso Municipal Health Directorate.

The donated items included refrigerators, laptops, office furniture, and more, intended for distribution among health facilities such as Atwima Takyiman Health Center, Nwamase Health Center, and the Directorate.

Speaking to OTEC news, Professor Nyarko pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to improve the well-being of his constituents.

The Municipal Health Director, Grace Billie Kampitib, expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting that it will enhance healthcare delivery in the area.

“Professor Nyarko’s donation is not an isolated incident; he has consistently supported various institutions in his constituency,” she said

In 2023, he donated ICT equipment to Asuoyeboah M/A JHS and Ohwimase Anglican JHS to promote digital education. Similarly, in 2021, he donated streetlight bulbs, hand sanitizers, and face masks to Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED).

Report water supply challenges to nearby offices

0

The Regional Communications Manager of the Accra East Region for Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, has urged residents experiencing water supply disruptions to report directly to their nearest GWL office for prompt assistance.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, April 18, Barnie underscored the importance of community engagement in tackling water-related issues.

His comments followed a recent Channel One News report that highlighted growing concerns over water scarcity in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

Several communities across the Greater Accra Region continue to endure erratic water supply. Many residents have lamented the impact on their daily routines and livelihoods, with some now dependent on costly private water vendors.

In Nungua, particularly around Leisure Street, the situation has become dire. Local food vendors and small business owners say they are spending heavily just to keep operations running.

However, Barnie reiterated the company’s readiness to act on officially reported concerns and urged residents to utilise GWL’s network of customer service offices across the region.

“We would want to urge our customers or consumers that if their water is not flowing, they should do well to approach us, come to our office. There is always an office nearby so you can go and make your complaint, and after the complaint, we will also follow up and see how we can help you to get water.

“They understand the importance of water in our daily life. Without water, life is impossible, so we expect that if customers or consumers are not getting water, they will kindly approach us and we will find out how we can assist them to get water,” Barnie said.

Weija-Gbawe MP demands immediate action on persistent power outages

0

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has issued a strong call to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), and the Ministry of Energy to urgently resolve the ongoing power outages affecting the constituency.

In a statement released on Friday, April 17, the MP expressed deep concern over the persistent and unannounced power cuts commonly referred to as dumsor, which have plagued communities in the area for several months.

He noted that these outages occur without prior communication from the power distribution agencies, leading to severe disruptions.

“These unplanned outages occur without prior notice or communication from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), causing widespread disruption to households, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and businesses,” the statement read.

The MP warned that the consequences of the unreliable power supply were far-reaching, undermining economic activity, endangering lives, and compromising the delivery of critical services in the constituency.

Although he acknowledged that the current power crisis is a nationwide issue, he spotlighted that Weija-Gbawe has been disproportionately affected.

According to the MP, some areas within the constituency have experienced continuous outages lasting more than four days, with some incidents extending even longer.

“Despite several engagements with ECG officials aimed at resolving this crisis, there has been no meaningful progress. While we have received assurances of GRIDCo’s intervention, residents of Weija-Gbawe continue to endure the burden of unreliable electricity supply,” he said.

Shaib stressed the urgency of the situation and called for immediate and decisive measures to permanently resolve the issue.

He described the appeal as “respectful but firm,” asserting that the people of Weija-Gbawe deserve a reliable power supply.

Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy

Attorneys representing Sean “Diddy” Combs have asked a federal judge in New York to postpone his upcoming sex-trafficking trial, currently set for May 5, by two months to allow more time to adequately prepare a defense.

Attorneys representing Sean “Diddy” Combs have asked a federal judge in New York to postpone his upcoming sex-trafficking trial, currently set for May 5, by two months to allow more time to adequately prepare a defense.

Judge Subramanian responded with a written order stating that the motion for delay will be addressed during a hearing scheduled for Friday.

Until then, he instructed both parties to continue preparing for trial as if the May 5 date remains firm.

The 55-year-old rapper has been in custody without bail since his arrest in September. He has pleaded not guilty to a series of serious charges tied to allegations that span more than 20 years.

In their letter, Combs’ attorneys criticized the prosecution for not providing key materials in a timely manner, particularly evidence related to a superseding indictment issued by a grand jury earlier this month.

They noted that prosecutors have already signaled they will miss a Wednesday deadline to submit their exhibits and witness list.

Further complicating matters, the defense claims that some of the withheld evidence pertains to a charge in the indictment that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years if the founder of Bad Boy Records is convicted.

“We cannot, in good conscience, go to trial on the scheduled date,” the lawyers wrote.

They added: “This is a problem that the government has created, yet it opposes our reasonable request.”

Federal prosecutors allege that Combs manipulated, abused, and coerced women over many years, leveraging his influence and celebrity status to build a network of associates and staff who enabled his actions.

They further accuse him of using blackmail, violence, including arson, kidnapping, and physical assault, to silence his victims.

Reciprocal tariffs should exclude vulnerable developing countries – UN trade body

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

Over the years, a rules-based global trading system has boosted international commerce and contributed to a gradual, steady decline in tariffs — a tax that countries levy on imported goods. In 2023, about two thirds of world trade occurred without tariffs.

In contrast, a sweeping spate of steeper tariffs recently introduced by major economies are raising concerns over escalating trade tensions and their impact on developing countries.

In a new report released on 14 April, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is amping up calls that the poorest and most vulnerable economies be exempt from “reciprocal tariffs”.

Such tariffs, currently on pause for 90 days, were calculated at rates to balance bilateral merchandise trade deficits between the United States and 57 of its trading partners – ranging from 11% for Cameroon to 50% for Lesotho.

The report, entitled “Escalating tariffs: The impact on small and vulnerable economies”, finds that in many cases, reciprocal tariffs risk devastating developing and least developed economies, without significantly reducing US trade deficits or increasing revenue collection.

Most vulnerable economies at risk

The 57 trading partners concerned – 11 of them least developed countries – contribute minimally to US trade deficits, UN Trade and Development notes.

For instance, 28 of them each account for less than 0.1% of the deficits yet could still be subject to reciprocal tariffs.

As many of these economies are small in size, structurally weak with low purchasing power, they offer limited export market opportunities for the US.

“Any trade concessions they grant would mean little to the United States, while potentially reducing their own revenue collection,” the UN Trade and Develop report underscores.

Reciprocal tariffs likely to have ‘minimal’ impact on US

If the reciprocal tariffs kick in again, demands for many imported goods are likely to decrease because of higher prices.

Even if US import levels were to remain at 2024 levels, additional tariff revenue collected from poorer and smaller economies would be minimal.

For each of 36 of the 57 trading partners, the reciprocal tariffs would generate less than 1% of US current tariff revenues (at approximately $83 billion in 2024).

This means the total contribution of these 36 economies would be some $4 billion, or about 5% of what the US collected in custom duties in 2024.

Potential negative impact on US consumers

The report also notes that several countries facing potential reciprocal tariffs export agricultural commodities the US doesn’t produce, for which there are few substitutes.

Some examples can be vanilla from Madagascar’s or cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.

In 2024, the US imported vanilla worth approximately $150 million from Madagascar. Cocoa imports from Côte d’Ivoire were close to $800 million, while imports from Ghana were valued at about $200 million.

Increasing tariffs on these goods, despite possibilities to add some revenues, is likely to result in higher prices for consumers.

Former Credit Suisse boss to run for Ivory Coast presidency

Tidjane Thiam was the first black person to head a major company in the UK Tidjane Thiam was the first black person to head a major company in the UK

Former Credit Suisse boss Tidjane Thiam is to run for president in Ivory Coast’s forthcoming election, his party has confirmed.

Thiam, 62, was the only candidate vying to represent the country’s main opposition party, the PDCI.

Thiam has spent the last two decades living abroad, and had to give up his French citizenship to be able to stand in the presidential election.

The former minister has held directorship positions in leading international businesses like Aviva, Prudential and Credit Suisse, though he resigned from the latter following a spying scandal.

Political scientist Geoffroy Kouao told the AFP news agency that Thiam was not “well known to Ivorians,” after spending more than 20 years out of the country pursuing his business career, and so would have to run a strong campaign in order to win October’s election.

The governing RHDP party has not yet announced its candidate, but the current president, 83-year-old Alassane Ouattara, has indicated that he would like to run for what would be a fourth term in office.

Three other prominent figures, including former President Laurent Gbagbo, have been barred from running, AFP reports.

Thiam has had something of a chequered career.

After becoming the first Ivorian to pass the entrance exam to France’s prestigious Polytechnique engineering school, he returned to Ivory Coast and took up politics.

In 1998, aged 36, he became planning minister before the PDCI was ousted from power in a coup the following year.

He then moved abroad and pursued a successful business career.

In 2009, he became the first black person to head a company on the UK’s FTSE 100 stock exchange when he was named CEO of the Prudential insurance company.

However, he was later censured by a financial regulator for not being open about a planned takeover.

After five years as the head of the Swiss bank Credit Suisse, he was forced to resign in 2020 after being accused of spying on two formers colleagues, which he has denied.

He is well connected in West African political circles – he is the great-nephew of Ivory Coast’s first President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, while his uncle Habib Thiam was a prime minister in Senegal, on two occasions, spanning a total of nine years.

Approach criminal cases with integrity, fairness – High Court Judge

0

Juliana Amono-Niezer, the Supervising High Court Judge for the Central Region, has urged all actors in the judicial system, particularly judges and jurors to handle criminal cases with integrity, diligence, and a firm commitment to justice and fairness.

Speaking at the official opening of the 2025 Criminal Assizes for the Central Region, held at the Cape Coast Court Complex, she emphasised that criminal trials involved not only the lives and liberty of individuals but also had implications for societal peace and security.

“I do not doubt that through our collective effort guided by the principles of law, and driven by shared commitment to justice, these criminal assizes will be conducted with efficiency, fairness and a profound respect for the rights of all,” she stated.

The annual criminal assizes are special sessions of the High Court dedicated to trying indictable offences such as murder, rape, armed robbery, and treason. The ceremony was followed by the empanelling of jurors for three murder cases, including the high-profile Mankessim case involving the tragic killing of a prospective nursing student, Georgina Asor Botchwey, in 2022.

Amono-Niezer highlighted that the criminal assizes served as a cornerstone of the country’s justice system, providing an avenue for accused persons to be tried fairly and swiftly before a judge and a jury. She pointed out that the effective execution of these sessions required more than just judicial involvement; it demanded the active cooperation and professionalism of all key stakeholders.

According to her, “The opening of the criminal assizes is not merely a procedural formality but a powerful reaffirmation of our collective commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding the rights of all individuals and ensuring peace and security of our communities.”

She went on to commend the contributions of state attorneys, police and prison officers, jurors, and members of the judiciary for their dedication to impartiality and professionalism over the years. She also acknowledged the critical role of the media and encouraged journalists to continue with accurate and responsible reporting to reinforce public trust in the justice system.

Adding his voice to the call, Vincent Aboagye Nyinaku, a Principal State Attorney with the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice, underscored the importance of the criminal justice system to national stability. He cautioned that a failure to uphold the rule of law would plunge the country into chaos and disorder.

He encouraged all involved in the justice process to commit to strengthening the system, while urging jurors to maintain fairness and avoid corruption. “Eschew any act of corruption in this duty given to you,” he stressed.

Nyinaku also supported the directive to ensure the swift disposal of cases but appealed for increased funding for the Attorney-General’s office to execute its mandate effectively.

For his part, Daniel Arthur, Secretary of the Central Regional Chapter of the Ghana Bar Association, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to justice, pledging that its members would carry out their responsibilities without fear or favour to ensure that only the guilty are punished.

Goldfields sues govt over Damang lease termination – ACEP confirms

0

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has disclosed that Abosso Goldfields Limited has initiated legal proceedings against the government’s decision not to renew its Damang gold mine lease.

The government rejected the company’s application and directed it to cease operations and vacate the site by the end of Friday, April 18.

However, ACEP has cautioned the government about the move.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, April 17, ACEP’s Executive Director, Ben Boakye, confirmed that the government has been notified of the legal action.

“I’ve made a point that processes—so unless you are saying that the legal processes that are laid out there in law are irrelevant, and therefore, because of the ownership of the resource, you can take any decision at any point. I don’t think that’s a good business relationship for any country to get into.

“They have invoked that. They’ve actually informed the government. That’s their right hand of the agreement. And that’s why we say that this is—you can negotiate,” he said.

Former STC boss expresses disappointment in current NDC government

Former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation, Nana Akomea Former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation, Nana Akomea

The former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has expressed disappointment in the current government.

He stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), under John Dramani Mahama, has let down the Ghanaian people by engaging in the same practices they once criticized during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) tenure.

According to him, if John Dramani Mahama genuinely intends to “reset” Ghana, then several things need to change.

He took the opportunity to condemn the use of security agencies to intimidate citizens and called for effective interventions to resolve the Bawku conflict.

“While we were in office, the NDC accused us of running a ‘family and friends’ government. They convinced Ghanaians that they would do things differently, and that’s why they were voted into power. But now, they are doing the very things they once condemned,” he said.

He added, “They have deceived the people of Ghana, and that’s why faith in democracy is dwindling. I am deeply disappointed. They claimed they came to reset the country, but look at the situation at the Bank of Ghana—where the Governor also serves as the Board Chairman. How is the Bank of Ghana’s work supposed to be independently monitored? John Mahama came across as a reformer, yet he has maintained this flawed arrangement. If you claim to be resetting the country, then you must be truly committed to that goal,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Asempa FM.

Ghana Is Not Nationalising Mining — We’re Seeking Fairness, Says Minerals Commission Boss

Accra, Ghana – The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Andrews Tandoh, has dismissed concerns that Ghana is veering toward nationalisation of its mining sector, asserting that the country is instead pursuing a strategic indigenisation agenda to secure fairer outcomes for its citizens.

“There hasn’t been a policy for nationalisation. We are not Burkina Faso. We are not Mali. But we are pushing for indigenisation,” Tandoh said during an interview on Joy News.

His remarks come amidst public debate over the government’s decision not to renew the mining lease for Gold Fields Ghana’s Damang Mine—a move some critics have interpreted as a shift toward state control. But Tandoh was firm in his rebuttal, stressing that the core objective is to reform outdated agreements and create more equitable partnerships.

Beyond Perpetual Leases

“We support foreign investment,” Tandoh affirmed, “but some of these agreements cannot be in perpetuity. If you’ve been given a lease for 30 years and you’ve worked through the 30 years, it cannot be business as usual. Those neo-colonial types of agreements cannot continue.”

Tandoh described the government’s stance as measured and deliberate, not reactionary. “This is about Ghana. This is about ensuring our infrastructure, our communities, and our people benefit from what is under their feet.”

A Call for Balanced Partnerships

The Commission’s position, he said, is rooted in the principle of mutual benefit. Ghana welcomes investors, but under fair and forward-looking terms.

“We’re not saying don’t come. We’re saying, let’s do fair business. Let’s look again at what we signed 30 years ago. The times have changed.”

Tandoh revealed that the Minerals Commission is actively reviewing existing mining agreements as part of a broader effort to reform the sector and promote sustainability and inclusive growth.

“Genuine investors are not afraid of fairness. They are afraid of instability,” he noted. “We are offering structure, fairness, and a clear plan for growth.”

National Interest at the Core

Tandoh concluded with a strong emphasis on national interest, noting that the government’s approach is rooted in long-term strategy, not populism.

“This is not abrupt. This is deliberate. It is strategic. And above all, it is for Ghanaians.”

As Ghana repositions itself within the global mining economy, Tandoh’s comments serve as a clear message to both foreign and domestic stakeholders: the era of extractive imbalance is coming to an end, and a new era of fairness, equity, and national benefit is on the horizon.
