Afenyo-Markin advocates merit-based opportunities for youth dev’t

0

Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stressed the need for Ghana to prioritise meritocracy over partisanship in creating opportunities for the nation’s youth.

Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19, the Minority Leader expressed concern over the politicisation of youth empowerment initiatives and urged a national shift towards recognising talent, creativity, and drive rather than party loyalty.

“We must take a hard look at how we extend opportunity, particularly to the youth. They must not be supported only when they wear party colours; they must be supported when they demonstrate potential, creativity, and drive,” he stated.

According to him, building the country’s future on political favouritism risks stifling progress and innovation, noting that national development hinges on fairness and equal opportunity for all deserving citizens, irrespective of their political alignment.

“Ghana’s future cannot be built on partisan loyalty; it must be built on merit. Those who deserve opportunity must be given the opportunity regardless of political affiliation. That is how we build a nation, that is how we create competition, and that is how we create progress in a nation,” Afenyo-Markin declared.

The Kwahu Business Forum remains a vital platform that brings together policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors to explore strategies for economic growth and private sector empowerment in Ghana and across the African continent.

Kwahu Business Forum is a call to action — Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Mpraeso (E/R), April 19, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that the Kwahu Business Forum is more than an event; stating that it is a call to action.

He said the Forum was opened to all Ghanaian businessmen and women, as well as foreigners; declaring that anybody who wants to come and attend and network was invited to attend the Forum.

“The world is changing, and new opportunities are being thrown up, and we as a country must take advantage of those opportunities,” President Mahama stated in his opening remarks at the Second Edition of the Kwahu Business Forum at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.

The Kwahu Business Forum, which is the brain child of President Mahama, is a major initiative to foster entrepreneurship and support the growth of Ghana’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

It is a direct response to the government’s vision of expanding Ghana’s private sector capacity, especially in the agro-processing and manufacturing sectors of the economy.

As a non-partisan national development agenda, the Kwahu Business Forum brings together business owners, industrialists, investors, start-ups, and major industry players to network, share experiences, and explore ways to raise capital or leverage available products from financial institutions.

The maiden forum, held during the 2024 Easter festivities at Mpraeso, the capital of Kwahu South District of the Eastern region, successfully brought together business magnates and young entrepreneurs who shared their experiences and expectations with the then-candidate John Mahama.

The Second Edition of the Kwahu Business Forum is on the theme: “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector”.

“Let us work together to build a Ghana that is competitive, productive, and inclusive.

A Ghana that creates opportunity for all,” the President said.

“The future of Ghana will not be determined government alone. It will be determined by our ability to build partnerships—between state and private sector, between finance and innovation, and between leadership and the people.”

The President said Ghanaians were all aware of the challenges the country had faced in recent years, soaring inflation, a weakened cedi, rising debt levels, and a decline in investor confidence.

He noted that these challenges had weighed heavily on businesses and households alike; saying “But I am

confident—and I say this with sincerity—that we are turning a corner.”

He said there were early signs of macroeconomic stabilization; stating that inflation was gradually easing, and with disciplined management, and that they were restoring a measure of confidence in the nation’s economy.

“But recovery alone is not enough. We must now set our sights higher on transformation,” he said.

“We must build an economy that is resilient, inclusive, and productive. And this cannot be achieved without a financial sector that works not just for a few, but for every Ghanaian business from the roadside vendor to the export-ready manufacturer.”

President Mahama said the Government’s vision for Ghana’s future business landscape was bold and deliberate.

He said they were pursuing a targeted programme to restore investor confidence by enhancing transparency, cutting bureaucratic red tape, and promoting a rules-based investment climate.

President Mahama said the Government was prioritizing sectors that could absorb labour and grow the economy sustainably agro-processing, ICT, manufacturing, tourism, renewable energy, and the green economy.

“But our focus is not only on attracting foreign investment. We are equally committed to empowering Ghanaians to become owners and drivers of enterprise,” he said.

“That is why my government will support the private sector not just with policy, but with decisive action.”

President Mahama said the Government would expand access to affordable financing through the Ghana Development Bank, the Women Development Bank, and partnerships with private financial institutions.

He said the Government would support SMEs with targeted financing, tax incentives, and technical support.

The President noted that they would modernize infrastructure—including roads, logistics, and digital connectivity to create an environment where businesses can thrive.

Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, Kwahu Abetifihene and Adontenhene of Kwahu Traditional Area, urged Kwahu citizens to take advantage of the Forum, so that they could have more businessmen and women from the area.

He appealed to President Mahama to complete the only Government Hospital projects in Kwahu at Abetifi, which was started by his previous administration nine years, but came to standstill following a change in Government in 2017.

Key challenge in business is finding trustworthy workers

0

President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the difficulty of finding trustworthy employees as one of the biggest obstacles facing business owners, even more than financial constraints.

Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday April 19, Mahama recounted a personal experience to illustrate the issue.

He shared how he once bought a bus for a relative to run a transport business, hoping it would provide financial stability for his family.

However, the driver, also a relative, prioritised his own interests over the business, modifying the vehicle in ways that led to repeated breakdowns.

Eventually, Mahama was forced to sell the bus, and the driver’s personal ambitions stalled along with it.

The president noted “There are several businessmen who have told me that one of the major hindrances they face in business is not even capital it is getting trusted people to work with. If somebody comes to work for you he thinks that your business is the platform for him also to build his business.

“It is not only him who has had that experience. I have had it too. I bought a bus for a relative to run transport business so that he can look after the family business at home and stop disturbing me on my small parliamentary salary and he gave it to a driver who was a relative, good driver though.

“The first thing he did was he went and put a carrier on the bus and anytime you saw the bus, the bus had more load on top of it than in the bus. And so what happened? The axle broke down, and it was the most regrettable experience in my life.

“When the axle broke down, they came to me to buy a new axle. So the reason for buying the bus had been defeated. Anytime the bus broke down, they’ll come to me to come and repair it, and they were causing me more to repair the bus than if I had just been ‘MoMoing’ the money to them.

“But you know what happened this driver used to live in the family house while he was driving the bus he procured a land he started to build a house, the house reached lintel level when the bus finally broke down and by then I had had enough so I refused to repair and decided to dispose of it, and so I sold the bus.

“This was like several years, maybe, yes, more than 10 years ago. And since I sold the bus where the building reached lintel level, it is still at lintel level, even till today.”

Reflecting on the broader implications, Mahama noted that many entrepreneurs struggle with similar challenges, as employees often view their employers’ businesses as stepping stones for their own ventures.

He pointed out that some Ghanaian business owners have resorted to hiring foreign managers due to difficulties in finding reliable local personnel.

The president called for a shift in mindset, urging Ghanaian professionals to embrace a culture of dedication and integrity in business management.

He emphasised the need to build a strong core of trustworthy individuals who are committed to growing businesses rather than exploiting them for personal gain.

“So what he says is very serious. Getting trusted people to work with and so we must look at that aspect. I know that even business people and industrialists are going out of the country and bringing foreigners to come and manage their businesses.

It is indictment on our human resource and it is something that we must begin to think about and find a core of management that is dedicated to working to build the business.”

We’ll patrol relentlessly to stop rebuilding of galamsey camp – FC’s W/Regional Manager

0

The Western Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Nana Poku Bosompim, has vowed that illegal miners will not be allowed to return to slums that were recently destroyed during a coordinated operation.

Speaking on JoyNews‘ Newsfile on Saturday after the successful demolition of notorious illegal mining slums, including Abrewa Ne Nkran, Jerusalem, and another camp near Wassa Nkran, Mr Bosompim said the Forestry Commission, with the backing of the military, is rolling out a strict surveillance and patrol strategy to ensure the camps are never rebuilt.

He emphasised that this was not the first time such slums had been destroyed.

“There have been at least three raids in the past, and each time they regrouped and came back—this time, more determined. After we cleared the area, we even discovered that some had already begun laying concrete foundations instead of the usual wooden structures.”

To prevent the return of illegal miners, the Forestry Commission is implementing a new strategy anchored on sustained ground patrols, military collaboration, and real-time surveillance.

“So the strategy now is to be able to patrol the area frequently and then make sure that the camp is never rebuilt.”

The operation at Abrewa Ne Nkran, which took place under the cover of darkness at around 3:00 am, involved officers from the Ghana Armed Forces’ Southern Command, who provided security and tactical support.

According to Mr. Bosompim, the mission was based on intelligence suggesting that the camps were not only densely populated but also controlled by armed gangs who resisted previous eviction efforts.

“Our initial estimate was around 1,500 to 2,000 occupants, but when we launched drone surveillance mid-operation, we saw thousands, far beyond what we had anticipated. It was a whole city hiding in plain sight, tucked right on the edge of our protected forest.”

Tunisian opposition leaders jailed on terror charges

A court in Tunisia has sentenced a group of senior politicians, businessmen and lawyers to long prison sentences on conspiracy and terrorism charges.

The defendants received sentences of up to 66 years. They include leaders of National Salvation Front, the main opposition coalition, who were arrested in 2023.

Human rights groups described the trial as an attempt to stifle dissent. A defence lawyer said it was a “farce”.

President Kais Saied suspended parliament after being elected in 2019. Last year he won a second term by a landslide, after jailing dissidents and potential rivals.

In the latest case, a total of 40 defendants were accused of “conspiracy against state security” and “belonging to a terrorist group”. Most had left the country and were tried in absentia.

Those in detention include National Salvation Front leaders Issam Chebbi and Jawhar Ben Mbarek.

They were given 18-year sentences, a defence lawyer told AFP news agency following the ruling late on Friday.

Kamel Eltaief, an activist and businessman, was jailed for 66 years, the lawyer added.

Kamel Jendoubi, a former minister who was tried in absentia, told AFP news agency: “This is not a judiciary ruling, but a political decree executed by judges under orders.”

Defence lawyer Ahmed Souab is quoted by Reuters news agency as saying: “I have never witnessed a trial like this. It’s a farce.”

Tunisia is the country where a wave of pro-democracy protests in the Arab world began in late 2010. The country’s long-time strongman, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, was ousted within weeks.

Last year’s election was Tunisia’s third presidential vote since then.

Rights group Amnesty International has denounced “a worrying decline in fundamental rights” under Saied’s government as discontent rises over his authoritarian style of governance.

Saied has rejected the criticism, saying he is fighting a “corrupt elite” and “traitors”.

A former CEO of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi has called on President Mahama to take a decisive action against the growing menace of illegal mining, locally referred to as galamsey.

He emphasised the urgency of the issue following reports of armed illegal miners attacking security personnel, adding that such situations pose a national security threat.

“Galamsey must be dealt with very ruthlessly because you have armed galamseyers shooting at security officers. We are a failing state, and the President must take this matter, hold the bull by the horns, and not fail us,” he said during a discussion on TV3’s KeyPoints on April 19, 2025.

He further expressed concern about the proliferation of foreign-led illegal mining communities within Ghana, labelling their presence as a national disgrace.

He challenged state authorities especially security entities, to explain how such enclaves manage to thrive under their watch.

“It is very scary that foreigners can infiltrate our country, create a community and their own community, and it is a disgrace. Investigate why national security allowed this to “It is a national security issue, are we really safe as a country that we actually have foreign nationals create their own communities?

“This is a very established community, totally unmapped, it is very scary. I think Ghanaians should be very concerned about what is going on,” he urged.

Dagbon overload blesses Yussif Sulemana on his appointment as TOR MD

0

The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, has offered his blessings and full support to the Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Dr. Yussif Sulemana.

Dr. Sulemana, who recently assumed office, makes history as the first Northerner to head the state-owned refinery, an achievement that has been warmly welcomed in the Northern Region.

On Saturday, April 19, Dr. Sulemana paid a courtesy call on the Overlord at the Gbewaa Palace to formally announce his appointment and seek royal blessings. The visit, deeply symbolic, underscored the importance of staying connected to one’s roots.

During the meeting, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II expressed joy over the development and urged Dr. Sulemana to justify the trust reposed in him by the President. He called on the new TOR boss to not only make the appointing authority proud but also serve as a beacon of excellence for the entire Northern Region.

The Overlord further encouraged Dr. Sulemana to distinguish himself in his new role and set a standard that could pave the way for more Northerners to rise to top positions in national institutions.

As the local saying goes, “No matter how high a bird flies, it will surely return to the ground”, a sentiment that was evident in the warm reception accorded Dr. Sulemana upon his return to Dagbon.

In response, Dr. Sulemana expressed heartfelt gratitude to the President for the opportunity and thanked the King and people of Dagbon for their prayers and unflinching support. He reaffirmed his commitment to serve with diligence and integrity and called for continuous support as he takes on the challenging task ahead.

“We are very much grateful to John Mahama for handing over the oil refinery to us. We thought it wise to bring it before our Overlord to put his blessing upon it, and from all indications, he has given us his total blessings. For us, it is overwhelming, and again, it assures us that people are praying for us. We are very much convinced that we are on the right course, and I think we will succeed at the end of the day.”

The new TOR MD also paid a visit to the Kuga Naa, who echoed the Overlord’s sentiments. The Kuga Naa emphasised the need for Dr. Sulemana to uphold integrity and urged him to focus on initiatives that would help tackle youth unemployment in the region.

Dr. Sulemana is an alumnus of Tamale Secondary School (TAMASCO), Class of 1999, a group he proudly represents. He was accompanied by several members of the year group, who joined in expressing gratitude to the President for the historic appointment.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Hajia Alhassan Faiza, Secretary of the 1999 year group, reaffirmed their support for Dr. Sulemana and pledged to rally behind him throughout his tenure.

The Data-Driven Truth about Financial Scams in Ghana

Ghana’s Growing Scam Problem: What the Numbers Say?

Mobile money fraud is on the rise in Ghana, and the numbers are telling.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s 2023 Financial Stability Review, there were 13,451 reported cases of fraud across the financial sector. Of these, mobile money fraud accounted for 20%, translating to nearly 2,700 cases involving mobile wallets like MTN MoMo, Vodafone Cash, and AirtelTigo Money.

In financial terms, Ghana lost an estimated GH¢56 million to fraud in 2022—a sharp rise from GH¢33 million in 2021. Of this, over GH¢10 million came from mobile money-related scams.

Rising cost of financial fraud in Ghana from 2021 to 2023, with a spotlight on mobile money fraud losses.

Between January and August 2024, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) reported 149 cases of online investment fraud, resulting in losses exceeding GH¢1.9 million. This marks a sharp increase from 63 cases during the same period in 2023.

These figures only reflect the reported cases. Many others go unreported due to shame, fear, or simply not knowing where to turn.

How Are People Getting Scammed?

Unlike the old days of brute-force hacking, modern scammers are relying on something more powerful: human error.

A tactic known as social engineering has become one of the top ways fraudsters operate in Ghana today. In simple terms, it’s when a scammer tricks you into giving away confidential information, like your MoMo PIN, one-time passwords (OTP), or even access to your phone.

Here’s how it usually works:

  • You receive a call from someone pretending to be a telco or bank agent.
  • They sound professional. They say there’s a problem with your account or that you’ve won a prize.
  • They convince you to “verify” your identity or dial a USSD code.
  • In doing so, you unknowingly authorise a transaction, and your money disappears.

It happens fast. And to anyone.

The MTN MoMo Case That Sparked National Conversation

A few weeks ago in April, a Ghanaian woman made headlines after revealing that GH¢11,000 vanished from her MoMo account. She insisted she hadn’t shared her PIN or clicked any strange links. The case stirred major concern online, with many Ghanaians demanding answers from MTN.

MTN Ghana responded, stating their systems had not been breached. Instead, they pointed to social engineering—meaning the customer may have unknowingly exposed sensitive information that allowed the fraudsters access.

This single story has since become a national case study on digital trust, platform responsibility, and personal caution.

Who’s Protecting the Public?

Telcos like MTN and Vodafone routinely send public alerts advising customers never to share their PINs or OTPs. The Cyber Security Authority of Ghana also runs periodic education campaigns.

But data from the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications shows a gap: over 50% of mobile money users have limited awareness of digital scam tactics. Many people, especially in rural areas or among the elderly, don’t fully understand how scammers operate.

This leaves a significant portion of the population exposed.

5 Data-Backed Tips to Stay Safe

  • Never share your MoMo PIN or OTP, even if the caller claims to be from your service provider.
  • No telecom agent will ask you to dial a USSD code to fix a problem or win a prize.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your email and financial apps.
  • Don’t store sensitive info like passwords on your phone’s notepad or in unsecured apps.
  • Report scams immediately to your mobile money provider or to the Cyber Security Authority via 292.

In conclusion, financial scams are not just robbing Ghanaians of their money—they’re eroding trust in digital systems that are meant to make life easier. With more services going cashless, this issue must be tackled with data, public education, and stricter regulation.

As Ghana moves toward a more digitised economy, staying informed and alert isn’t optional—it’s essential.

King Promise played only 10 shows in 2024 – Stonebwoy’s PRO tells Tilly Akua Nipaa

0

Public Relations Officer for Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa Public Relations Officer for Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa, has questioned King Promise’s chances of winning the Artiste of the Year award at the forthcoming 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

During a debate with King Promise’s PRO, Tilly Akua Nipaa, on April 18, 2025, Vida Adutwumwaa argued that the ‘Terminator’ hitmaker has not done enough to deserve the top spot at this year’s TGMAs.

She pointed out that despite being a dancehall artiste, a genre with fewer mainstream artistes in Ghana, Stonebwoy has managed to remain relevant and consistent over the years.

“You claimed Stonebwoy is retrogressing based on a comparison of his numbers from previous years to now. But I ask you the same: King Promise’s numbers from last year and this year aren’t the same either, so does that mean he’s also regressing?

“The fact that Stonebwoy has upheld the dancehall genre in Ghana for over 10 years, a genre not many pursue here, is a clear sign that he’s doing well,” she stated.

Vida also claimed that King Promise performed only 10 shows throughout 2024.

“King Promise played only 10 shows in 2024. Now compare that to the number of live band performances Stonebwoy delivered. That’s not the sign of an artiste who’s falling off,” she concluded.

Six key points from President Mahama’s speech at 2025 Kwahu Business Forum

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a comprehensive vision for economic transformation at the second edition of 2025 Kwahu Business Forum held in Mpraeso in the Eastern Region.

Addressing entrepreneurs, financial leaders, and government officials, President Mahama touched on rebuilding Ghana’s economy through a strong, inclusive financial sector.

Here are six key initiatives President Mahama outlined in his speech to help transform Ghana’s economy.

Role of financial sector in empowering businesses

President Mahama emphasised the need for the financial sector to drive economic growth for all businesses.

“The financial sector is the bloodstream of any economy. Without it, businesses cannot grow, jobs cannot be created, and innovation cannot thrive,” he stated.

He reiterated the need for the financial system to support a broad range of businesses, from roadside vendors to large manufacturers, to build a resilient economy.

Launch of a National Venture Capital Fund

As part of efforts to support youth-and women-led businesses, President Mahama announced plans to launch a national venture capital fund.

“We will launch a national venture capital fund to support youth- and women-led businesses and introduce regulatory reforms that encourage banks and financial institutions to lend to productive sectors of the economy.

“Financial inclusion will be at the heart of this agenda. No economy can grow if its people remain excluded from formal financial systems. We will work with banks, fintechs, and mobile money operators to expand access to financial services, particularly in rural and underserved communities”, he noted.

The 24-Hour Economy

Addressing his vision for the 24-Hour Economy, President Mahama emphasised that the initiative also aims to create an environment where businesses can operate seamlessly around the clock.

“The future of business in Ghana must be digital, green, and inclusive. We are entering an era where digital infrastructure is just as important as roads and bridges. As part of our 24-Hour Economy strategy, we will establish the necessary conditions, through reliable electricity, efficient logistics, and enhanced public safety, for businesses to operate continuously.

“This will boost productivity, create jobs, and expand opportunities across the country,” he said.

Jobs and Skills compact to align education with industry

He further announced the introduction of a “Jobs and Skills Compact” to align education and training skills with industry demands

“We will provide incentives to companies that create sustainable, decent jobs, and support youth entrepreneurship to unlock the creativity of our young people.

“Our vision is a Ghana where no young person needs to leave their hometown in search of opportunity. Where communities like Mpraeso, Nkawkaw, and Abetifi become hubs of innovation, enterprise, and decent work”, he stated.

Economic recovery with focus on transformation

President Mahama acknowledged the challenges facing the country, including inflation, a weakened cedi, and rising debt, but expressed optimism about Ghana’s path to recovery.

“There are early signs of macroeconomic stabilization: inflation is gradually easing, and with disciplined management, we are restoring a measure of confidence in our economy,” he stated.

Restoration of investor confidence

President Mahama talked about steps to build investor confidence, such as being more transparent and making sure investments follow clear and fair rules.

“We are pursuing a targeted program to restore investor confidence by enhancing transparency, cutting bureaucratic red tape, and promoting a rules-based investment climate.

“We are prioritising sectors that can absorb labour and grow our economy sustainably agro-processing, ICT, manufacturing, tourism, renewable energy, and the green economy. But our focus is not only on attracting foreign investment. We are equally committed to empowering Ghanaians to become owners and drivers of enterprise”, he noted.

Actor in film warning of revenge killings shot dead in family feud

0

“No man avenged has ever risen from the grave” is the haunting tagline of a film that has shocked Somalis to the core in a case of life imitating art.

Called Aano Qabiil, meaning “Clan Vengeance”, the short film sought to highlight the futility of vendettas between rival clans that sometimes go back generations and lead to senseless killings – often of young men who are targeted just because of their lineage.

It was a poetic warning, a cry – a story intended not just to entertain, but to educate a wounded nation.

Since its release earlier this month, it has gone viral as people have learnt that one of the actors in the drama was later shot dead in exactly the kind of clan revenge killing the film had warned about.

Guudey Mohamed Geedi, a veteran of Somali cinema, had played a character who tried to intervene to stop the owner of a teashop from being killed as he hid in a building from gunmen from a rival clan.

Outside a woman is heard shouting: “Don’t let him leave alive, I want to drink his blood,” as Geedi’s character pleads: “He’s just a tea vendor – what did he do to you that warrants his death?”

Not long after the filming of Aano Qabiil wrapped up in the town of Bal’ad, around 30km (18 miles) north-east of the capital, Mogadishu, Geedi travelled to visit his family in the countryside.

It is in rural areas that rivalries between Somali clans proliferate. Sometimes the disputes are about long-standing competition for resources such as grazing land or access to wells for camels and other livestock.

But even minor issues can sometimes spark a deadly feud – for example a remark by a politician in the capital.

When Geedi reached his small village outside Warsheikh, in the Middle Shabelle region, he did not know that tensions between two Abgal sub-clans were about to boil over.

The 45-year-old was shot dead outside his home in November by armed men as part of this long-standing inter-family feud.

No-one has been arrested for his murder and the authorities have not commented on the case.

It often happens that clan-related killings go un-investigated – especially in rural zones. They are seen as “private matters” or too complex to intervene in.

“He died in real life the same way as the violence played out in the film,” his friend Adaawe, who requested that only his first name be used, told the BBC.

“Only this time, there was no camera, no director to yell ‘cut’. No-one to plead for his life.”

Abdisiyaad Abdullhai Mohamed, who wrote and directed Aano Qabiil for Astaan TV, said Geedi had been instrumental during filming.

“We worked closely together. Guudey believed in the message we were trying to convey. He wasn’t just an actor; he was a key part of the vision I had for the story,” the 32-year-old told the BBC.

The film-maker grew up in a community often affected by stories of bloodshed, where people are killed in the name of seeking justice.

“I wanted to show the humanitarian cost that follows simply hearing the news that someone has been killed due to clan revenge,” he said.

“As Somalis, every time we hear someone has been killed, we never stop to think or ask ourselves if that person belonged to a close family that is now destroyed and a future lost.”

The story of the film centres on two friends, Ali and Salah, who belong to rival sub-groups of an unnamed clan.

Together they run a teashop in Bal’ad, when clan violence from the countryside intrudes upon their lives. Neither of them knows what has brought the feud to their doorstep.

“The same cursed clans we were born into are at war again,” says Ali, who at first manages to save Salah’s life before he himself becomes a target.

To avenge Ali’s death, Salah is then killed. The film ends with clansmen laughing over his bullet-ridden body near Ali’s grave – happy that honour has been satisfied.

“In my film, I showed how the death of Ali affects his wife, Sahra, who is pregnant. Overall, this film was a cry for help, meant to raise awareness among the Somali community,” said the director, Mohamed.

Clan identity is deeply engrained in Somali society. The country has four major clans, and each has hundreds of sub-clans, with even those divided, depending on the region.

Many Somalis have grown up hearing about the killings of close relatives in the name of past grievances or clan rivalries.

Clan-related killings contribute to internal conflicts and displacement in Somalia, especially in rural areas.

But a 2023 report from PeaceRep, a research organisation based in the UK, highlighted the spread of clan revenge killings to cities in central Somalia.

Somali Peace Line, a local organisation, recorded in its 2022 annual report more than 160 clan-related killings in just one year, most of which went without justice, further fuelling the cycle of violence.

In some central regions, up to 80% of clan killings remain unresolved, leading to communities failing to learn from the tragedies.

Frank Davies slams politicization of Chief Justice removal process

0

The Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Frank Davies, has voiced strong concerns over the way public discourse surrounding the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is being handled.

Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews, Davies clarified that the issue is not about the removal itself, which is constitutionally backed, but the manner in which it’s being discussed in public spaces.

Kwahu Business Forum: Africa must take advantage of emerging global opportunities

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called on African nations to capitalise on shifting global dynamics to secure their place in the evolving economic landscape.

Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19, the President emphasised the need for Africa to move beyond its traditional trading mindset and embrace manufacturing, industrialization, and entrepreneurship.

“The world is changing, and new opportunities are being thrown up. We, as a country, must take advantage of those opportunities,” President Mahama stated.

He highlighted the ongoing trade wars between major economic powers as a catalyst for global shifts in production, presenting Africa with a unique chance to assert itself.

Reflecting on historical trends, the President noted that Africa has often missed out on the benefits of major global transitions, from the Cold War to the era of globalisation.

However, he expressed optimism about the continent’s potential to leverage current geopolitical changes.

President Mahama urged Africans to rethink their economic roles, encouraging bold ventures into agribusiness, digital entrepreneurship, and large-scale commercial farming.

“We can be anything that we want,” he affirmed.

The Kwahu Business Forum continues to serve as a platform for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors to discuss strategies for economic development and private sector empowerment across Ghana and the continent.

NPP facing existential threat – Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has cautioned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is grappling with deep internal divisions that pose a serious existential threat to its future as a viable political force in Ghana.

The 12-member committee assigned to investigate the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections on Wednesday, April 16, presented findings of the probe to the National leadership of the party.

At the event held at Alisa Hotel in Accra, Chairman of the committee, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye and his team presented the official document to the party.

Speaking on JoyNews‘ Newsfile on Saturdy, April 19, Mr Fuseini pointed to deep divisions within the NPP, driven largely by conflicting views on the legacy of former President Akufo-Addo and the direction of the party post-2024.

“If you are going to go along that tangent, because your party is clearly facing an existential threat. There are those who think within your party Nana Akufo-Addo is largely responsible for the defeat of your party.”

“Nana Akufo-Addo’s group too think that the party cannot revive itself, if it doesn’t ride on his legacy. So, you have these two to contend with – it’s just like confession and avoidance. Admit that you did something wrong so that you can rebuild your party.” he said.

The rift, according to Mr Fuseini, lies between factions who hold the former President Nana Akufo-Addo, accountable for the party’s recent electoral losses, and loyalists who insist that any political revival must be rooted in protecting and continuing his legacy.

Describing the situation as one of “confession and avoidance”, Mr Fuseini urged the party to come to terms with its recent failures and face hard truths if it hopes to recover credibility and public trust.

“Admit that you did something wrong so that you can rebuild your party,” he advised.

I went from being Nigeria’s highest-paid editor to bread seller – Chief Momodu

0

Renowned Nigerian businessman, Chief Dele Momodu Renowned Nigerian businessman, Chief Dele Momodu

Renowned Nigerian journalist, Chief Dele Momodu, has revealed he resorted to selling bread for a living after he lost his job as the country’s highest-paid editor.

In an exclusive interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, Mr. Momodu said he did not allow himself to be discouraged by the sudden turn of events.

“I realised that the biggest embarrassment about not having a job is people asking you, ‘So what are you going to do now?’ And you have no answer. I became a bread seller. Imagine going from being an editor, the highest-paid, coming down. I came down to rock bottom,” he said emphatically.

He noted that he remained resolute in the face of the embarrassment.

Discussing power dynamics as an influence on losing his job, Chief Momodu said successful people in their jobs were often targeted by society.

“I lost my job as the highest-paid editor in Nigeria. I was removed as Editor and promoted as Managing Editor, which to me I knew was a promotion into redundancy.

“I was in London when it was done. The day I returned to Nigeria on Sunday, I resigned by Monday. They took my official car, they took my driver,” he recalled.

Asked whether he published stories that made the powers that be uncomfortable, he said, “When you get too powerful in your job, you should always know there are people who will come for you. I became too powerful.”

Herder-farmer clashes in Nigeria kill at least 17

Observers say the scarcity of land as well as climate change have contributed to increasing tensions Observers say the scarcity of land as well as climate change have contributed to increasing tensions

At least 17 people are reported to have been killed as suspected nomadic cattle herders carried out twin attacks in central Nigeria‘s Benue State.

Police spokesperson Anene Sewuese Catherine said in a statement on Friday that “a large number of suspected militia had invaded” a region of Benue State overnight. The attack came amid a resurgence of deadly clashes between herders and farmers, a conflict that has killed hundreds over recent years.

Security forces were deployed and as the assailants “were being repelled in the early hours of today, they shot sporadically at unsuspecting farmers” killing five farmers in Benue’s Ukum area.

Police said a second attack took place in Logo, about 70km from the area of the first incident.

“Unfortunately an unsuspected simultaneous attack was carried out” in a neighbouring locality, where 12 people were killed before police arrived, the police spokesperson said.

The attacks came just two days after 11 people were killed in the Otukpo area of Benue, and barely a week after gunmen attacked villages and killed more than 50 people in neighbouring Plateau State.

Since 2019, clashes between nomadic cattle herders and farming communities have killed more than 500 people in the region and forced 2.2 million to leave their homes, according to research firm SBM Intelligence.

The clashes, mostly between Muslim Fulani herders and Christian farmers from the Berom and Irigwe ethnic groups, are often painted as ethnoreligious.

However, analysts have said climate change and scarcity of pastoral land are pitting the farmers and herders against each other, irrespective of faith.

The conflict has disrupted food supplies from north-central Nigeria, a significant agricultural area.

It’s wrong for NPP to assume fight to protect CJ – Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as the politicisation of ongoing legal issues surrounding the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews, the former NDC MP asserted that the NPP’s active defence of the Chief Justice creates a perception that she is politically aligned with the ruling party, which could erode public confidence in the judiciary’s independence.

“It is totally wrong for a political party to assume the fight to protect the Chief Justice,” he said, expressing concern that the NPP’s involvement could undermine the integrity of the judiciary and politicise what should be a constitutional and impartial process.

Mr Fuseini argued that while it is not inappropriate to initiate processes to remove a Chief Justice in cases of alleged misconduct, the role of political parties in such matters should be restrained.

He recalled that there had been a similar petition against Justice Torkornoo in 2024 and stressed that calls for scrutiny of her office should not be dismissed outright.

“What the NPP is doing currently is implanting in the minds of people that the current Chief Justice is sympathetic to the NPP,” he said.

“They are doing Madam a disservice, and I simply do not understand why the NPP is so jumpy.”

He further criticised the party for using its legal surrogates to challenge the President’s constitutional obligations in court, noting that all those filing lawsuits to block presidential action on the matter are affiliated with the NPP.

“It is even becoming increasingly difficult to talk about the Chief Justice because she is the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana,” he stated.

“If the NPP doesn’t know that they are creating the problem, I am telling them they are creating the problem.”

Ketu North MP urges motorists to prioritise road safety

0

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North Constituency, Eric Edem Agbana, has urged motorists to prioritise safety during the Easter festivities.

In his Easter goodwill message, the MP called on all road users to avoid reckless behaviour, particularly the dangerous combination of alcohol and driving or riding.

“As we travel to celebrate with loved ones this Easter, I kindly urge all drivers and riders: no drink and drive, and no drink and ride. Your life matters. Your family needs you to be safe,” he emphasised.

Agbana called on his constituents to drive cautiously, avoid speeding, and exercise care and responsibility during this busy travel season.

In addition to his safety message, the MP extended warm Easter greetings to the people of Ketu North. “As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, I extend my warmest Easter wishes to you and your families. May this sacred season renew our faith, fill our hearts with peace, and strengthen the bonds of love that hold our communities together.”

He reflected on the significance of Easter, a time that embodies sacrifice, humility, and service values that continue to guide his work as a Member of Parliament.

“I remain committed to walking side by side with you, listening to your needs, and working together for the development of every community within Ketu North.”

Agbana also expressed his eagerness to participate in local Easter celebrations and cultural festivities across the constituency, reaffirming his role not only as a representative but also as a brother and member of the community.

“These gatherings remind us of our unity and shared identity. I will be there not just as your MP, but as your brother.”

Finally, he asked for the prayers and support of the people, stating, “Pray for wisdom, strength, and the heart to always lead with integrity and compassion. May this Easter bring renewed hope to us all. God bless you, and God bless Ketu North.”

Mahama’s soft stance encouraging galamsey surge

0

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has attributed the worsening illegal mining situation in Ghana to what he termed as President John Dramani Mahama’s “soft” approach to the fight against galamsey.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 19, Ahiagbah argued that the President’s campaign posture and lack of a firm stance have emboldened illegal miners rather than deterring them.

“Galamsey has worsened because the president is soft on it. His campaign compromised his position to do anything. They promised these people opportunities. Their campaign to come to office gave comfort to galamseyers,” Ahiagbah stated.

In his view, the lack of decisive action has failed to send a clear message to illegal miners.

“Without impugning his motive and saying that he is for galamsey, his approach so far has not been stern, has not sent a strong signal that they want to fight galamsey. The extent of galamsey today is worse than he inherited, and he must do something about it.”

Ahiagbah further challenged the President to back his “reset Ghana agenda” with firm actions against galamsey, warning that the current trajectory undermines national efforts to curb the environmental and economic destruction caused by the practice.

“President Mahama, in the context of their reset agenda, should be setting certain clear signals out there that they are against this galamsey thing. But somehow they haven’t, and everything they have done so far has not provided any incentive for the galamseyers to say that this is a no-go area. Rather, they appear to have given them the leeway to be doing galamsey,” he said.

However, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, has expressed confidence that the new gold trading regulatory system, led by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), will curb illegal gold trade and ensure Ghana fully benefits from its mineral resources.

This follows the establishment of the GoldBod and the annulment of all previous PMMC-issued licenses, underpinned by the Ghana Gold Board Act (Act 1140), passed by Parliament on March 29 and assented to by the President on April 2, 2025.

0

It is expected that music lovers and young people will gather on Saturday evening to witness musical performances from renowned music icons.

Under activities of the Ashanti Fest, a festival to mark celebration of Easter in the Region, the lined artiste will take turns to entertain their fans with music.

Musicians and musical groups such as Y-Pee, Mass Mello, Bosoma, Strongman, Seven Kiss and Allo Dancers are among entertainers advertised to stage performances on the night.

Some members of renowned Asakaa Boys namely; YGA O’Kenneth and Beetztrap loved widely by the youth of the city will be expected to move the crowd on the day.

The MTN sponsored concert which forms part of the ongoing Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council’s (ARCC) Ashanti Festival is expected to create more excitement for residents during the Easter holidays.

At the time of filing this report, the Rattray Park, the venue to host the musical concert was being set up to receive the huge numbers expected to throng in on Saturday.

According to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the idea to stage a festival was conceived after a request from some youth at a clean-up exercise.

On social media, the minister requested ideas to sustain the event for two weeks. Series of events were therefore scheduled for the ten-day event in the region.

“The whole concept of the Ashanti Festival is to bring out our various sectors, showcase what we have as a Region and see how best we will be able to promote inter sectorial support for each other”, he said.

Your jobs are guaranteed – Lands minister assures Damang Mines workers

0

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has assured workers of Abosso Gold Fields Damang Mines that they will not lose their jobs after the government refused to renew the licence of the company.

The minister pointed out that the government’s decision to take over the company does not mean that its workers are going to lose their jobs.

He emphasized that the government fully recognises the vital role workers play in the survival of the company.

The minister made these remarks, according to myjoyonline, during a visit to the Abosso Gold Fields Damang Mines.

“Today, we had to come to engage the workers of the Gold Fields Damang Mines to assure them of His Excellency, President Mahama’s commitment to ensure that even in this transitional period their jobs will be guaranteed. We are going to work with them to ensure the safety and sanctity of the plants and operations here,” he said.

Armah-Kofi Buah also stated that entities who have been contracted by the company should also not fear losing their contracts.

“Contractors and subcontractors who work here must be assured that this transition will not affect their commitments, agreements and contracts that they have here,” he added.

According to him, the government’s primary objective regarding the mining company is to use it as a tool to empower local residents.

“Ultimately, it is to strengthen them, not to weaken anybody. The intention is to empower the communities here and to make sure that they ensure that there is continuity in operations,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, reports from the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) have indicated that Abosso Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of mining giant Gold Fields Limited, has initiated legal proceedings against the government following the termination of its mining lease for the Damang site.

The legal action comes in response to the government’s decision not to renew the company’s 30-year lease, a move reportedly influenced by pressure from local youth, who have accused the company of failing to make meaningful contributions to community development.

With the lease set to expire on Friday, April 18, 2025, the government has taken over operational control of the Damang Mine.

In an official statement, the government cited the company’s failure to declare verifiable mineral reserves as a key reason for rejecting Abosso Goldfields Limited’s lease renewal application.

Gold Fields Limited, one of the world’s leading gold producers, operates two major mining sites in Ghana: The Tarkwa Mine, managed by Gold Fields Ghana, and the Damang Mine, operated by Abosso Goldfields Limited.

The company gained full operational control of the Damang Mine in 2011 after acquiring IAMGold’s remaining shares.

I apologise to Nayiri, Mamprusi youth over my Bawku comment – Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has issued an unqualified apology to the Nayiri, the Mamprugu Youth, and the Council of Chiefs for comments he made concerning the Bawku conflict.

Speaking on JoyNews’ , Mr. Fuseini clarified that his remarks were made off the cuff during a discussion that was not initially centered on the Bawku crisis, stressing that his statements were never intended to provoke anger or disrespect.

He explained that his comments were aimed at promoting peace and not at endorsing any faction involved in the conflict. However, he acknowledged that his words were interpreted as an affront to the authority of the Nayiri and the Mamprugu Kingdom.

“It was unfortunate that my views, though honestly expressed, appeared to align with the Kusasi position. That was never my aim. I am Dagomba, but suddenly I was being labelled as Kusasi simply for suggesting a possible approach to peace,” he said.

Mr. Fuseini further noted that upon reflection, he understood the concerns raised by the Mamprusi people.

“My comments were not meant to disrupt the existing order or to undermine any traditional authority. I was simply pursuing what I believed could contribute to justice and peace in Bawku,” he added.

Using the platform, Mr. Fuseini extended a heartfelt apology: “With the greatest respect, I render an unqualified apology to the youth of Mamprugu, the Nayiri, and his Council of Chiefs. It was never my intention to hurt anyone.

“On this Holy Saturday, I pray that my apology will be accepted by all those I have offended — my brothers in Mamprugu, the youth, and the traditional authorities.”

Support tied to low trust, corruption perception – Mussa Dankwa

0

Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwa, says strong public support for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo is driven by long-standing public distrust in the judiciary and perceptions of corruption.

His comments follow a new Global InfoAnalytics poll which shows that 52% of Ghanaians favour the Chief Justice’s removal, while only 20% oppose it. Another 18% of respondents were neutral, with 10% expressing no opinion.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, April 19, 2025, Mussa Dankwa explained that the survey results reflect deeper sentiments rooted in earlier polling trends.

“I’ll want to respond to you using data, because I don’t want to speak my opinion and make inferences. In 2023, the Supreme Court by voters—majority, almost 60%—did not trust the Supreme Court. They had low confidence in the Supreme Court in 2020, according to the polls,” he said.

“In the recent poll we also did, you’ll notice that the Supreme Court is now perceived to be the third most corrupt public institution in Ghana today. So if you add one and one together—perceived to be least confidence from voters and most corrupt, number three—people will tend to add the dots and say that the person who may be leading the courts, any reason to get her out they may think it’s justified. I think their perception they have given us in terms of her removal may have been shaped in terms of these two public opinion.”

Let us not jump the gun – Gloria Ofori-Boadu urges

Lawyer and human rights advocate, Gloria Ofori-Boadu, has called for calm and a renewed commitment to democratic principles, cautioning against premature conclusions and actions that risk undermining Ghana’s constitutional order.

Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews, Mrs Ofori-Boadu reflected on Ghana’s democratic evolution, emphasising that the country’s current system is not merely constitutional, but one that embodies the ideals of constitutional liberal democracy — a system rooted in the protection of human rights and civil liberties.

“I will say we are jumping the gun, because Ghana – we are now in a constitutional liberal democracy. In fact, if I just say ‘constitutional’, I am limiting it, because there once was a time that we had the one-time democracy. But now we have the constitutional liberal democracy, which is broadening on the principles of human rights – the rights to be heard, the right to freedom and all that. We have all these freedoms enshrined in our Constitution.”

She highlighted the importance of constitutionalism, noting that the freedoms currently enjoyed by Ghanaians including the right to speak, to assemble, and to be heard are not incidental, but are legally protected and must be fiercely safeguarded.

Ama Bawuah, the mother of Ghanaian-American singer, Amaarae, has shared the traumatic incident her daughter faced at the beginning of her career.

In an interview on the “Diva Doc” podcast, Ama Bawuah noted that her daughter was heavily abused on social media by Ghanaians.

She explained that the harsh comments directed at her daughter stemmed from spite, as some netizens believed Amaarae came from a wealthy family.

“When Amaarae started her music career, I remember some of the Ghanaian kids on social media were really tough on her. Some of them were saying she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and she has wealthy parents,” she said.

Recounting the challenges they faced as parents, Ama Bawuah shared that when they first arrived in the United States, she and her husband couldn’t even afford to sleep in the same bed due to financial constraints.

“When we first went to the US, myself, Amaarae, and Papa were sleeping on one double-size bed. As a child, she never asked for a doll. It was all about the keyboard, a microphone, and a guitar,” she shared.

Amaarae’s mother also shared how supportive she has been so far as her daughter’s career is concerned.

“One time I remember she pulled up a show in Spintex and I had to invite all my friends to go and support her, I paid for all of that. I also remember her first radio interview. I had all of my family listening to her.

“I am that kind of mother that would go ten toes deep for my children. I remember I used to tell her that if she wanted to do music, she should learn the business side of it… I always say that failure was never an option,” she added.

President of GAFORB, Dr. Alex Akpabli President of GAFORB, Dr. Alex Akpabli

The Ghana Association of Forex Bureaux (GAFORB) has expressed displeasure over the current regulatory framework governing the operations of forex bureaus in the country.

According to the group, the framework under which the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is operating is overly restrictive, stifling innovation and growth within the forex sector.

The President of GAFORB, Dr. Alex Akpabli, in an interview with JoyNews, said that the framework has created operational limitations for them, which is affecting the competitiveness and sustainability of forex bureaus across the country.

“We have been caged by the existing regulations. There is a pressing need to reassess the operational guidelines to reflect modern-day realities and market demands,” Dr. Akpabli stated.

Dr. Akpabli pointed out that while a regulatory framework is necessary to oversee the forex sector, it should be more flexible.

He added that a more flexible and tech-driven systems would enhance transparency, improve service delivery, and position forex bureaus as key players in Ghana’s financial ecosystem.

“The Bank of Ghana must begin to consider allowing us to adopt and integrate more digital solutions. We believe the use of technology will not only enhance compliance but also help curb black market activities,” he said.

He added, “We are ready to comply with any regulatory updates, but they must be practical and designed with the future in mind.”

From bus axle breakdowns to lintel-level homes: Mahama’s cautionary tale on trust in business

0

President John Mahama added a personal touch to his keynote address at the Kwahu Business Forum on Friday, April 19.

He did this with a story about a failed family business venture, all to drive home a critical point about trust in business.

The former President recounted how he purchased a bus over a decade ago for a relative to run a small transport business in hopes of relieving some financial pressure on his parliamentary salary.

Instead of helping, the venture turned into a regretful experience that offered a valuable lesson about trust and responsibility in business.

According to him, the bus was entrusted to a driver who overloaded it until the axle broke, leading to frequent and costly repairs that ultimately outweighed the intended benefits.

“And anytime you saw the bus, the bus had more load on top of it than in the bus. And so what happened? The axle broke down, and it was the most regrettable experience in my life. When the axle broke down, they came to me to buy a new axle. So the reason for buying the bus had been defeated. Anytime the bus broke down, they’ll come to me to come and repair it, and they were causing me more to repair the bus than if I had just been moving the money to them,” he said.

To make matters worse, the driver, who had been living in the family home, had begun constructing a house with proceeds from the poorly managed transport business, a structure that still remains incomplete to this day.

“So I refused to repair the bus and decided to dispose of it, and so I sold the bus. This was like several years, maybe, yes, more than 10 years ago. And since I sold the bus where the building reached lintel level, it is still at lintel level, even till today.”

President Mahama’s story was in response to a point raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had stressed that many businesses fail not due to lack of capital but because of untrustworthy employees or partners.

Mr. Mahama echoed the sentiment, noting that “getting trusted people to work with” remains a major challenge for entrepreneurs and a barrier to industrial growth.

“There are business owners bringing in foreign managers to oversee their operations because they can’t trust local hires — that’s an indictment on our human resource,” he said.

He urged the forum’s participants to prioritize integrity and loyalty as key traits for building a sustainable business culture.

“If you want to suck your pound of flesh out of a business and kill it, no industry will grow,” he warned.

The anecdote was met with laughter and agreement from the audience, while reinforcing a sobering reality about the human resource challenges many Ghanaian businesses face.

Private jet is next on my list – Chez Amis CEO after purchasing Rolls-Royce Cullinan

CEO of Chez Amis restaurant, 'Big Chizzy' CEO of Chez Amis restaurant, ‘Big Chizzy’

The CEO of the popular Chez Amis restaurant has revealed her next big purchase; a private jet, after shutting down the internet with her newly acquired Rolls-Royce Cullinan, reportedly worth over USD 450,000.

In a video shared on X on April 18, 2025, Belinda, popularly known as ‘Big Chizzy’, expressed her intent to buy and personalise a private jet, stating, “I’m thinking of a private jet with Chizzy on it.”

When asked about the social media backlash following her luxury car reveal, she said she is unfazed.

“I’m not bothered. What men can do, women can do better. It’s all about hard work and determination,” she said confidently.

Chizzy also took a moment to inspire young women, urging them to stay focused on their hustle and not to shy away from any legitimate means of earning.

“They should work hard and never be ashamed of their hustle. Whether it’s selling pure water or Indomie by the roadside, do it. When you’re broke, no one shows up for you,” she emphasised.

Recalling her own humble beginnings, she added, “I wasn’t ashamed standing on the roadside grilling tilapia. People looked down on the food I sold because they thought it was just common gari. But look at me now.”

Ghana’s first female CJ who swore in four presidents in the Fourth Republic

0

Ghana's first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood

Since the inception of Ghana’s Fourth Republic on January 7, 1993, three remarkable women have held the esteemed position of Chief Justice; the highest office in the country’s judiciary.

These trailblazing women are Georgina Theodora Wood, Sophia Akuffo, and Gertrude Torkornoo.

While each brought distinct leadership styles and made huge contributions to the judiciary, Georgina Wood stands out for a historic feat.

She is the only Chief Justice in the Fourth Republic to have sworn in four Presidents, marking her tenure as a particularly memorable chapter in Ghana’s constitutional journey.

Justice Wood’s judicial career began with her appointment to the Court of Appeal in 1991.

By 2000, she had become the most senior judge in the court. In November 2002, she was elevated to the Supreme Court.

Her trailblazing journey culminated in June 2007 when former President John Agyekum Kufuor appointed her as Chief Justice, making her the first woman in Ghana’s history to hold that position.

Here is a profile of Ghana’s first female CJ

Born on June 8, 1947, Georgina Theodora Wood began her academic journey at Bishop Girls’ School in Accra. She later attended Methodist Primary School in Dodowa and Mmofraturo Girls’ Boarding School in Kumasi.

She continued her education at Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast from 1960 to 1966, before earning her Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Ghana, Legon, in 1969.

After graduating from the Ghana Law School in 1970 with a Second Class Upper Division in the Bar examinations, she was called to the Bar the same year.

Georgina Wood’s public service career began in the Ghana Police Service, where she served as a Deputy Superintendent of Police after completing an officers’ training course at the Police College in 1971.

In 1974, she transitioned to the judiciary, beginning as a Magistrate at the District Court.

Her rise through the judicial ranks was marked by professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to justice.

Her tenure as Chief Justice was not only defined by landmark judicial reforms and principled leadership, but also by her central role in Ghana’s peaceful democratic transitions.

She made history by swearing in four Presidents during her time in office: Professor John Evans Atta Mills in 2009, John Dramani Mahama in 2012, following the passing of President Mills, John Dramani Mahama again in 2013 after his electoral victory and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017

After her retirement in June 2017, she was succeeded by Justice Sophia Akuffo, the second woman to hold the office who served until 2019.

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the third female Chief Justice, later followed in her footsteps, continuing the legacy of female leadership in Ghana’s judiciary.

Maiden AshantiFest peaks this Easter weekend, Kumasi residents ready to participate in fun-filled activities

0

The AshantiFest, instituted to mark Easter in the Ashanti Region, has entered its final lap filled with entertainment activities.

Already, a boxing night, football games, and an electrifying jama [Singing] competition have been held to the satisfaction of many.

Many more entertaining events are scheduled for the Easter weekend with many residents of Kumasi gearing up for full participation.

According to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, the idea to stage a festival was conceived after a request from some youth at a clean-up exercise.

On social media, the minister requested ideas to sustain the event for two weeks. Series of events were therefore scheduled for the ten-day event in the region.

“The whole concept of the Ashanti Festival is to bring out our various sectors, showcase what we have as a region and see how best we will be able to promote inter-sectoral support for each other”, he said.

The festival, which kicked started on 12th April, commenced with a clean-up exercise in all the Metropolitan, Municipal and Districts in the Ashanti Region.

A football game between sports presenters and Kumawood actors sparked excitement in the region, and a boxing night followed at the Parade Grounds of KNUST.

Though the city is not heavy on boxing, patronage was high, as bouts were interspersed with musical performances and comedy.

At the Food Fair and Bazaar held at the Kumasi Cultural Centre, a variety of indigenous Ashanti food was on display, attracting many patrons within the city.

It offered the stage for other cultures to promote their cuisine. The Ghanaian traditional fabrics and locally manufactured clothing featured prominently at the event grounds.

Foster Ayisah lauded the food on display, “The food bazaar was an interesting one. A lot of local food which are rarely seen was exhibited. I know many people have learnt new things just as I have.”

The organisers of the festival did not leave out educational activities for the basic and senior high schools.
For the basic schools, a spelling bee was organised among some public schools, while the Senior High Schools fiercely contested in a debate.

A Science and Technology Fair was also featured as part of the education activities. Inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons were not left out of the event, as the minister led a medical screening.

A blood donation exercise was featured alongside the health screening exercise, which was also open to the public.

The programme, sponsored by telecommunication giants MTN, was heavily patronised by Kumasi residents. A trip to the Lake Bosomtwe and Kids Festival will be held on Easter Friday to usher in the weekend.

Rich traditional artifacts will also feature on Saturday at a Kente Festival and Wood Carving event.

The region’s dominance in the movie industry will also be showcased as part of the Ashanti Fest activities.
