How Kwame Nkrumah predicted a wave of Coups in Africa – Former videographer shares vivid account

0

Following the overthrow of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in a coup led by Major General E.K. Kotoka and Lieutenant General J.A. Ankrah, a former close associate has shared a striking account of how Nkrumah predicted a wave of coups across Africa.

Chris Hesse, a videographer who once shared an office with Nkrumah, spoke to JoyNews about the tense moments following the 1966 coup while they were on a state visit to China.

He recalled that after the news of Nkrumah’s overthrow broke, there was chaos and fear among the ministers who had travelled with him.

According to Chris, Nkrumah remained calm and made a chilling prediction.

“The day after the announcement, there was a big confusion in the Ghana camp, and the coup in Ghana meant something. We were at the mercy of the Chinese government… All the ministers left the president and Nkrumah said what has happened in Ghana is what is going to happen in the continent of Africa.

“There will several coups in Africa until the whole of the continent will go down into the pit until the whole of Africa will grow from the ashes,” he recounted.

Chris, who continued to work as a filmmaker after Nkrumah’s fall, went on to serve under other Ghanaian leaders, including Jerry John Rawlings.

Having started working with Nkrumah at the age of 24, Chris went on to become one of Ghana’s most respected filmmakers, eventually leading the Ghana Film Corporation before retiring in 2000.

DopeNation tops the night with crowd-favorite anthems as Adom Kwahu Easter ends with a bang

0

Celebrated artistes DopeNation exploded onto the Obomeng stage with the kind of energy only true headliners can bring, and trust that they did not disappoint.

As the official main act for the Adom Kwahu Easter Mega Bash, the award-winning twin duo unleashed a storm of rap fusion and Afrobeat, for which the microphone was at their mercy.

From ‘Eish’ to ‘Zanku,’ and all the way to ‘Gboza,’ the back-to-back hitmakers delivered a performance that was more than music.

After whetting the appetite of patrons, they delivered the theme music, ‘Zormizor’ and every crowd reaction proved why DopeNation remains one of Ghana’s most dynamic live acts.

The twins worked the stage in perfect sync, bouncing off each other with choreography, while engaging with the crowd.

At one point, they even paused to let fans rap parts of their songs, and the crowd nailed every line, word-for-word.

Their set was a showstopper, a moment, the kind people will talk about for Easters to come.

DopeNation did not just headline the show, they absolutely owned it.

Alabaster Box should demand more than GH¢15 million from Medikal – Vida Adutwumwaa

Entertainment pundit Vida Adutwumwaa has called on gospel group Alabaster Box to increase their demands from rapper Medikal.

She believes the rapper has been disrespectful after using the group’s intellectual property without proper acknowledgment.

According to her, it is only fair that Alabaster Box asks for more.

Vida pointed to Medikal’s strong reaction to TV3’s mistake in a Sarkodie discussion, saying it reflects how people like Alabaster Box feel when their work is used without permission.

“If you are angry, this is how you react, but you have used someone’s intellectual property without proper acknowledgement, and you are telling them how to react. It doesn’t make any sense.

“Arnold said the demands are harsh, but I think it is because of the disrespect from Medikal that is why they are calling for stiffer punishment. I think they should even increase the GH¢15 million,” she said.

She added that not everyone in Ghana can easily make money, which is why Alabaster Box thinks that their intellectual property should work for them.

She said the group respected Medikal and asked him to stop using their work, but he hasn’t, adding that if he had, they would have made it public.

“Not everyone can make quick money in Ghana and that is the reason why the Alabaster guys think that their intellectual property should work for them. They respected Medikal and asked that he stop using it, but the artiste hasn’t done that. I am sure if he had, they would have put the information out,” Vida stated.

Politicisation of business threatens Ghana’s growth and private sector – Afenyo-Markin
Minority Leader in Parliament – Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has cautioned that persistent political interference in Ghana’s business environment is weakening investor confidence and posing a serious challenge to the country’s economic prospects.

Addressing the 2025 Kwahu Business Forum in Mpraeso on April 19, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the increasing tendency for partisan considerations to influence access to state contracts and business opportunities was eroding merit and distorting fair competition.

“The biggest problem we have as a country is our political interference in everything. And it’s killing initiative,” he told a gathering of entrepreneurs, government officials, private sector actors, and development partners.

According to the Effutu MP, such interference discourages honest effort and stifles innovation, especially among young Ghanaians who are trying to succeed without political ties.

“When everything is politicised from cocoa purchasing to road contracts to even small loans, you push away people who just want to work hard and succeed,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.

He called on both political leaders and state institutions to act more responsibly and uphold fairness in public economic affairs. In his view, Ghana cannot nurture a thriving private sector if success is determined by connections rather than competence.

“We need to get to a point where your political background doesn’t determine your success in business. That’s the only way we can truly grow as a nation,” he added.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also advised the youth to avoid relying on political favouritism as a shortcut to wealth, warning that it only breeds inequality and resentment.

The Kwahu Business Forum, which began as a campaign initiative and has now become an annual platform, brings together stakeholders across party lines to discuss economic development in practical terms.

Stop charging ‘toilet fees’ for usage of washrooms in hospitals – Ghana Health Service to directors

0

It is a common norm to pay either GH¢2, GH¢1 or in some instances GH¢0.50pesewas for the usage of public washrooms in many parts of Ghana.

The practice has gradually extended to many health facilities, following which the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in a circular to all regional directors, has noted that its attention has been drawn to the charging of fees for use of washrooms in some Ghana Health Service facilities.

In the circular dated April 16, 2025, and signed by Prof Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the acting Director General of the GHS, Regional Directors of the GHS were accordingly requested to ensure that this practice ceases with immediate effect.

It said failure by facility heads to adhere to this directive will attract sanctions.

The GHS noted that the washrooms are an integral part of the hospital infrastructure, intended to provide comfort for patients and visitors, and should not be used as avenues for exploitation.

“The washrooms must all times be kept clean and comfortable to prevent the risk of infection, improve perception of patient care quality, and increase patient satisfaction.

“Regional Directors are accordingly requested to ensure that this practice ceases with immediate effect. Failure by facility heads to adhere to this directive will attract sanctions.

“Kindly bring this to the notice of Heads of facilities for strict compliance,” it added.

Judge refuses to postpone Diddy’s sex trafficking trial

Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy

Despite his legal team’s request for more preparation time, a federal judge ruled Friday that the sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs will begin as scheduled in early May.

During a hearing at Manhattan federal court, Judge Arun Subramanian confirmed that the trial, expected to span eight to ten weeks, will commence on May 5.

Attorneys for Combs had asked for a two-month postponement, arguing that additional time was needed to gather information on government witnesses and address recent developments in the indictment.

However, Judge Subramanian denied the request, stating that Combs, who is represented by at least four attorneys, has ample legal support and time to prepare.

He dismissed the delay request as an attempt at a “fishing expedition” for more evidence, saying it was unwarranted.

The embattled rapper, who has remained in custody without bail since his arrest in September, turned toward the courtroom gallery after the hearing. He gave a thumbs-up to his mother and two other supporters, one of whom wore a sweatshirt emblazoned with “Free Puff”, AP reported. Combs, 55, has entered a plea of not guilty.

The hearing also featured rulings on trial procedures and evidence. Among the decisions, Judge Subramanian allowed accusers who testify for the prosecution to use pseudonyms in court to protect their identities.

He also declined a defense motion to dismiss several of the charges included in the indictment brought against Combs.

According to prosecutors, Combs used his celebrity status and industry influence to manipulate, abuse, and silence women over a span of two decades. They allege he relied on intimidation tactics such as blackmail, physical assault, arson, and even kidnapping to prevent victims from coming forward.

Prosecutors further claim that Combs orchestrated drug-fueled, elaborately staged sexual encounters involving male sex workers and his alleged victims—events that were internally referred to as “Freak Offs.”

In response, Combs’ legal team has argued that the government is distorting his past relationships, particularly with long-term girlfriends, in order to criminalize what they describe as consensual sexual activity.

Don’t be fooled by campaign promises – Ayikoi Otoo warns voters

Former Attorney General, Ayikoi Otoo Former Attorney General, Ayikoi Otoo

Former Attorney General and diplomat Nii Ayikoi Otoo has questioned the credibility of former President John Mahama’s 120-day social contract, dismissing it as a campaign tactic rather than a realistic policy commitment.

Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio, Otoo described the widely publicized pledge as part of the theatrics that typically accompany political seasons.

“In politics, especially during campaigns, you have to sell yourself to the voting population.

“There are things people say to woo the electorate to their side. The 120-day social contract and what he [Mahama] promises to do in his first 100 days are all part of the gimmicks of politicking,” he stated.

Otoo further pointed out that even in past administrations, early appointments and implementations rarely happened as swiftly as promised.

He cited delays in the appointment of ministers and their deputies as examples that contradict the feasibility of rapid transformation within the first few months of a new administration.

“I don’t think it happened within 14 days,” Otoo remarked. “Some names came later—even deputy ministers—and all that took some time.”

On the issue of energy challenges, he disputed recent claims that the notorious power crisis, known as “dumsor,” had been resolved.

“Dumsor has not gone. We still have problems with power outages,” he said, underscoring the persistent infrastructural and management issues within the power sector.

He also criticized attempts to shift certain executive powers, particularly those relating to tax exemptions. “Now they say they cannot do that and instead want to take away the President’s power to approve exemptions,” he noted.

Reflecting on the broader political culture, Otoo said such grand promises are often used strategically to attract votes.

“If you are a politician and you make promises about what you intend to do, people might not vote for you. So most people come on board and say things,” he added.

He concluded by calling on the media to play a more proactive role in evaluating political promises. “The media—which is the fourth estate—should be holding them accountable for whether or not those promises are achievable.”

Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin Draws Massive Crowd During Tsiame Homecoming

0

Hundreds of residents in Tsiame, a town in Ghana’s Volta Region, gathered to welcome Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Efutu, during a homecoming event aimed at supporting women-led businesses. ‘

The large turnout, marked by enthusiastic cheers and communal celebrations, underscored the community’s recognition of Afenyo-Markin’s longstanding engagement with local development initiatives.

Speaking to the crowd, Afenyo-Markin framed his visit as both a personal homecoming and a broader call for grassroots empowerment. “This gathering is significant not just for Tsiame but for Ghana. It reflects the power of community engagement and the responsibility of leaders to drive progress,” he said. The event centered on distributing hairdryers, sewing machines, and other tools to women, part of what he described as a “heartfelt effort” to bolster economic self-sufficiency.

The MP explicitly dismissed speculation that his donations signaled political ambitions in the Keta constituency. “These items are not a campaign strategy. I am here solely to uplift my people,” he stated, emphasizing his focus on addressing systemic challenges faced by women and youth.

Local leaders praised the initiative, with Keta MP Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpe urging colleagues to replicate such efforts nationwide. “When MPs prioritize their constituents’ needs, it transforms lives,” he said, urging beneficiaries to maximize the resources for sustainable growth. Bernard Suka, a former Tsiame Assembly Member and NPP official, highlighted Afenyo-Markin’s broader influence, noting his role as a “model for youth” and a catalyst for community pride.

Beneficiaries, predominantly women, welcomed the support. “These tools will help us build businesses,” one recipient told reporters, echoing widespread optimism about the initiative’s potential to reduce unemployment.

Afenyo-Markin’s visit aligns with a recurring theme in Ghanaian politics, where lawmakers often leverage community-focused projects to strengthen ties with constituents. While such gestures are frequently applauded, they also spark debates about the intersection of philanthropy and political patronage.

Critics argue that sustainable development requires systemic reforms beyond symbolic donations, particularly in regions grappling with infrastructure gaps and limited access to capital. Nonetheless, the public response in Tsiame illustrates the immediate impact of direct aid in fostering goodwill a dynamic that continues to shape political engagement in Ghana’s decentralized governance landscape.

The 2025 Adom Kwahu Easter festival wrapped up in grand style, leaving unforgettable memories across Kwahu Obomeng and its enclaves.

The four-day celebration, powered by Guinness, began with jams at Linda Dor rest stop, setting the tone for what has been a memorable fest.

It also featured breathtaking cultural displays to competitive football games, booming business and the overall, enjoyable music performances.

On the cultural front, Kwahu Tafo came alive as chiefs and warriors in traditional regalia re-enacted their ancestral migration and history.

The newly introduced Clan Festival at Obomeng, led by Odeefour Effah Opinamang III,  united families under the banner of heritage and identity.

Also, the Asempa FM Kwahu Easter Games saw intense football action with over 10 matches played. Nteso emerged champions, defeating host town Kwahu Tafo in the finals to lift the trophy and claim bragging rights for the year.

One of the crowd-pulling activities was the Kasahare Rap Battle, where Kweku Wina emerged winner, walking away with a brand-new phone and GHS 2,500 cash prize.

Music lovers were treated to electric performances from headline acts DopeNation and Kofi Mole, as well as rising stars like Danito and Sweet Star, not forgetting the veteran Nana Agyemang.

The climax was the 20th anniversary of the Paragliding Festival at the Odweanoma Mountains, where both seasoned and first-time fliers soared through the skies.

This year’s edition gives credence to the fact that Kwahu remains the ultimate Easter destination in Ghana.

Attacks continue despite Putin’s ‘Easter truce’ pledge, Zelensky says

0

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of creating an “impression” of a ceasefire while still taking military actions in some places in Ukraine.

In the first six hours of the “Easter truce” – as ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin – Zelensky said there had been 387 shellings and 19 assaults by Russian forces, and drones used 290 times. There are no reports of casualties.

Putin ordered his forces to “stop all military activity” in Ukraine from 18:00 Moscow time (16:00 BST) on Saturday until midnight on Sunday. Kyiv said it would also adhere.

The BBC in Ukraine reports that it has been quieter on the front lines.

Because Putin’s ceasefire was announced minutes before it was due to take effect, an immediate, complete pause was always unlikely, but it has been quieter.

Before Zelensky said there had been continued attacks in some areas, at midnight on Saturday there were no reported Russian drones or fighter jets in Ukrainian skies.

That is very rare.

The only report was that a Russian ship with missile launchers had been deployed to the Black Sea.

In the southern city of Odesa, it was silent. On Friday, before Moscow’s announcement, air defences crackled throughout the night as Russian drones flew in from the direction of occupied Crimea.

On Sunday morning, Zelensky said Moscow was “trying to create a general impression of a ceasefire, but in some places it does not abandon individual attempts to advance and inflict losses on Ukraine.”

Accusing Russia of specific military actions, Zelensky added that “everywhere our warriors are responding as the enemy deserves, based on the specific combat situation.”

Late on Saturday – hours into the truce – Zelensky had said: “If Russia is now suddenly ready to truly engage in a format of full and unconditional silence, Ukraine will act accordingly – mirroring Russia’s actions.”

“Our actions are and will be symmetrical. The proposal for a full and unconditional 30-day silence remains on the table — the answer to it must come from Moscow,” he wrote on X.

Zelensky said Ukraine would be ready to extend a truce beyond 20 April, seemingly referring to an earlier proposal from the US for a 30-day ceasefire which Ukraine had already agreed to.

It seems now both Moscow and Kyiv want to show Washington they are serious about peace. The question of whether the Kremlin accepts Zelensky’s offer to turn this truce from a 30-hour one to a 30 day one is central to any potential path to peace.

Few Ukrainians think that is remotely possible.

Putin announced the temporary truce at a meeting with his chief of general staff, Valery Gerasimov.

“Based on humanitarian considerations… the Russian side announces an Easter truce. I order a stop to all military activities for this period,” Putin told Gerasimov.

“We assume that Ukraine will follow our example. At the same time, our troops should be prepared to repel possible violations of the truce and provocations by the enemy, any aggressive actions.”

The Russian defence ministry said its troops would adhere to the ceasefire provided it was “mutually respected” by Ukraine.

It is not the first time a pause in fighting has been suddenly announced – a previous attempt at a ceasefire during Orthodox Christmas in January 2023 fell apart after both sides failed to agree on a proposal.

Reacting to Putin’s truce announcement, a Foreign Office spokesman in the UK said: “Now is the moment for Putin to truly show he is serious about peace by ending his horrible invasion and committing to a full ceasefire, as the Ukrainian government has called for – not just a one day pause for Easter.”

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people – the vast majority of them soldiers – have been killed or injured on all sides.

The US has been directly talking to Russia as part of its efforts to end the war, but has struggled to make major progress.

Last month, Moscow rejected a proposal for a full and unconditional ceasefire that had been agreed by the US and Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump on Friday warned Washington would “take a pass” on brokering further talks on ending the war in Ukraine unless there was quick progress.

He was speaking after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US was not “going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end”, as it had “other priorities to focus on”.

“We need to determine very quickly now – and I’m talking about a matter of days – whether or not this is doable,” he added.

“If it’s not going to happen, then we’re just going to move on.”

“I find peace in Ghana” – Co-founder of Tribe Meets shares deep cultural connection

0

UK-based Ghanaian and co-founder of Tribe Meets, Abby Osei Tutu, has spoken candidly about the deep sense of peace and belonging she finds in Ghana, despite the country’s challenges.

Appearing on The Chat on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 19, Abby described her emotional bond with Ghana as spiritual and grounding, likening the feeling to none she has experienced elsewhere.

“I have always felt a deep connection with my culture. I could probably be the biggest fan of Ghana. I know Ghana has its issues, but there is a level of peace that I feel here that I just do not feel in any other country. I have travelled to a bunch of countries by myself, about seven, and yes, it is nice, but there is no feeling like the peace that I get when I am in Ghana,” she said.

Her reflections echo a growing sentiment among many in the African diaspora who see Ghana not only as a birthplace but as a haven for reconnection, cultural healing, and identity.

Abby’s journey mirrors the mission of TribeMeets, the platform she co-founded to help Africans in the diaspora rediscover their roots. TribeMeets supports relocation, fosters cultural identity, and builds strong, connected communities by bridging the gap between diasporans and the continent.

Through initiatives in entrepreneurship, cultural immersion, and networking, the platform is helping redefine what it means to “come home” to Africa.

Newly confirmed Kpando MCE pledges to deliver on NDC’s reset agenda

0

The newly confirmed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Kpando in the Volta Region, Killian Donkor, has pledged to fulfil his mandate in the municipality and called for the support of the Chiefs, Elders, Assembly Members, and other stakeholders of Kpando.

Following his confirmation, the MCE made this commitment during a courtesy visit to the Paramount Chief of Kpando, Togbe Dagadu IX.

He expressed his gratitude to the President, John Dramani Mahama, as well as to Togbe and the Elders of the land, while appealing for their continued support in helping him execute his duties effectively.

He also called for unity among the Chiefs, Assembly Members, and residents of the municipality to realise President Mahama’s Reset Agenda in Kpando—an initiative aimed at addressing and correcting issues requiring reform.

Mr. Donkor urged all stakeholders to work collaboratively and without division for the growth and development of Kpando, for the benefit of both current and future generations.

“Advise me, guide me, and offer your counsel as I assume this role,” he said, encouraging the Chiefs and Elders to hold him accountable should he fall short in the execution of his duties.

In response, Togbe Dagadu IX urged all Assembly Members and Elders of Kpando to support the MCE in fulfilling his mandate as the President’s representative to the people of the municipality, noting that the MCE’s success would reflect positively on the entire community.

The Paramount Chief also encouraged Mr. Donkor to clearly articulate and share his plans and vision for the municipality, to track progress, and ensure effective support where needed. He reiterated that his doors remain open for advice and collaboration in the collective interest of the people of Kpando.

Togbe advised the MCE not to rely solely on government funding for development projects. Instead, he encouraged him to explore Kpando’s abundant human and natural resources, as well as alternative funding sources and grants.

“When you find yourself in a challenging situation, ask yourself, ‘If the President were in this position, what would he do?’” said Togbe Dagadu, urging the MCE to model his leadership style on that of the President.

Entertainment Analyst Urges Alabaster Box to Escalate Medikal Compensation Demand

Ghanaian entertainment commentator Vida Adutwumwaa has called for Alabaster Box, a creative collective, to heighten their financial demands against rapper Medikal beyond the initial GH₵15 million, citing alleged disrespect and unauthorized use of intellectual property.

The dispute centers on claims that Medikal repeatedly used Alabaster Box’s creative assets without acknowledgment, despite prior requests to cease.

Adutwumwaa argued that Medikal’s dismissive response to the group’s grievances justified stricter penalties. “If you use someone’s intellectual property without credit, you cannot dictate how they should react,” she stated during a media discussion.

She referenced Medikal’s past public criticisms of media outlets, including TV3, as evidence of a pattern of disregarding accountability. “Their demand isn’t just about compensation it’s about respect. Given his conduct, GH₵15 million may even be too lenient.”

The conflict escalated after Alabaster Box accused Medikal of leveraging their creative work, which they claim is central to their livelihood, without permission. While the rapper has yet to publicly address the specific allegations, industry observers note the case highlights broader tensions over intellectual property rights in Ghana’s entertainment sector, where formal licensing frameworks remain inconsistently enforced.

Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo, another analyst, initially described the GH₵15 million claim as excessive but acknowledged that Medikal’s perceived defiance might have influenced Alabaster Box’s stance. Legal experts suggest the case could test existing copyright norms, particularly for creative collaborations lacking formal agreements.

This dispute underscores growing advocacy for clearer intellectual property protections in Ghana’s creative industries. Similar clashes have emerged in recent years, with artists and producers increasingly pushing for standardized crediting and compensation practices.

While social media amplifies such conflicts, the absence of robust legal precedents often leaves resolution reliant on public pressure rather than litigation. For smaller collectives like Alabaster Box, high-profile cases may set critical benchmarks for asserting ownership in an evolving digital landscape.

‘Criss Waddle should be advising Medikal not tweeting senselessly’

0

Entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo Entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo

Entertainment pundit and media personality, Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has expressed disappointment in Criss Waddle following his recent public remarks regarding a copyright infringement lawsuit involving Medikal.

Criss Waddle, founder of the AMG Group, recently took to social media to criticise gospel group Alabaster Box over their GH¢15 million lawsuit against Medikal, labelling it “completely unreasonable.”

However, his comments did not sit well with Arnold, who, during a discussion on United Showbiz on April 19, 2025, described Criss Waddle’s statements as “unfortunate and senseless.”

“The tweets from Criss Waddle’s account were senseless. He is supposed to give Medikal good advice after the lawsuit. But what he wrote doesn’t make sense. Will they be happy if someone also infringes on their intellectual property?” he quizzed.

He further criticised Waddle for dismissing the seriousness of the issue, saying, “He shouldn’t sit in the comfort of his home and claim that Alabaster Box is fighting their ‘son’, because it simply doesn’t make sense.”

Arnold went on to question Criss Waddle’s maturity and judgment, especially given his experience in the industry.

“He should grow because he has been in the industry for long time. Instead of them calling Alabaster Box and finding a good way to rectify the issue, you are misbehaving,” he stated.

Who’s next? – Here are possible replacements for CJ amid suspension rumours

From L to R: Justices Lovelace-Johnson, Gabriel Pwamang, Yonny Kulendi, Omoro Tanko, Baffoe-Bonnie From L to R: Justices Lovelace-Johnson, Gabriel Pwamang, Yonny Kulendi, Omoro Tanko, Baffoe-Bonnie

Rumours are swirling that President John Dramani Mahama has allegedly suspended Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, revealed that the president had received three separate petitions calling for the removal of the Chief Justice.

In response, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, filed a writ at the Supreme Court, seeking a declaration that President Mahama’s decision to forward the petitions to the Council of State for consultation is unconstitutional.

According to the MP, the constitution mandates that the president must first notify the Chief Justice of the petitions and allow her the opportunity to respond before consulting the Council of State.

Amid this legal and political standoff, multiple reports have emerged that Chief Justice Torkornoo has been suspended.

As the situation unfolds, let’s take a look at some of the potential candidates who could assume the role of Chief Justice if her removal is officially confirmed.

His Lordship Justice Gabriel Pwamang

Justice Pwamang currently serves at the Supreme Court and has chaired panels of justices on several high-profile cases.

Arnold Asamoah Baidoo Criticizes Criss Waddle Approach to Medical GH¢15 Million Lawsuit

0

Arnold Asamoah Baidoo, a renowned Ghanaian entertainment journalist and pundit, has never shied away from voicing his opinions on industry matters. Known for his incisive analysis and bold commentary, Baidoo recently weighed in on the ongoing legal tweet between Alabaster Box and rapper Medikal, which has sparked debates across social media. During a live discussion, Baidoo aimed Criss Waddle’s public statements about the lawsuit, calling his approach counterproductive.

Arnold Asamoah Baidoo expressed his disappointment with Criss Waddle’s decision to address the GH¢15 million lawsuit on social media rather than handling it privately. According to Baidoo, Waddle, as a seasoned figure in the Ghanaian entertainment industry, should have called for behind-the-scenes negotiations with Medikal instead of airing grievances publicly.

“Criss Waddle’s tweets about Alabaster Box’s lawsuit against Medikal make no sense,” Baidoo stated emphatically. He further argued that Waddle’s status in the industry should have compelled him to act more strategically. “As a creative individual who played a pivotal role in Medikal’s rise, Waddle ought to be more critical and vigilant in his dealings. Publicly tweeting about legal matters only escalates tensions and damages relationships.” He added.

Baidoo emphasized that Criss Waddle missed an opportunity to resolve the issue amicably by not reaching out to Medikal directly. “Instead of calling out Alabaster Box or making public statements, Waddle should have picked up the phone and spoken to Medikal privately. That’s how industry veterans handle sensitive matters.”

Arnold Asamoah Baidoo acknowledged Criss Waddle’s contributions to the industry, particularly in nurturing Medikal’s career. However, he insisted that such influence comes with responsibility. “Waddle helped shape Medikal’s path, and that history should have guided him toward a more diplomatic approach.

GNFS urges Kantamanto authorities to rebuild market to modern standards

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on Kantamanto market authorities to reconstruct the facility with modern fire safety standards to reduce the risk of future outbreaks.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Saturday April 19, Greater Accra Regional Commander, ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, emphasised that despite previous reconstruction efforts, the market remains vulnerable due to the continued use of wooden structures such as wawa boards and plywood.

He stressed the need for fire-resistant materials and essential safety features like smoke detectors, heat detectors, and flame detectors to enhance fire prevention measures.

According to Nisawu, markets should operate strictly within designated hours—opening in the morning and closing by evening—to prevent traders from using them as residences, which increases fire hazards.

He noted “They have reconstructed the market and I am on record saying that until we try and dedicate these markets and say these markets should be reconstructued to modern standards where we can get smoke detectors, heat detectors, blame detectors, using fire resistant materials to construct, get to know that this a market, we open the market at 6 O’clock we close it at six in the evening that people will not use the market as dwelling places we will continue to have challenges.

“So my advice is that they should try as much as possible and reconstruct the market to befit modern standards and let’s move away from these wooden structures that we use wawa boards and ply woods and other things.”

Gov’t will soon engage transport operators over reduction in fares – Thomas Ampem

0

Deputy Finance Minister, Thomas Ampem Nyarko has said government will hold discussion with transport operators in the next couple of weeks to reduce fares in response to declining fuel prices.

Speaking during an interview on the sidelines of the Kwahu Business Forum at Kwahu Mpraeso on Saturday, April 19, Mr. Nyarko highlighted the significant impact of reduction in fares on inflation in the country.

“As a government, we have committed and have started bringing down inflation. In fact, we are hoping that with the next inflation announcement, we see a significant improvement.

“We are seeing that fuel prices are also going down. In the next couple of weeks, we’ll have to engage transport operators so that they will also bring down lorry fares. Once all these happen, it will have a positive impact on inflation, and it will help us as a country,” he stated.

Mr. Nyarko also emphasized the importance of the Kwahu Business Forum, pointing out that the government’s commitment to inclusivity is demonstrated by the presence of the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Kumasi Rap heavyweights to Headline YFM’s Lakeside Festival in 2025

Ankaase Lakeside PartyAnkaase Lakeside Party
Ankaase Lakeside Party

YFM’s annual Ankaase Lakeside Party will spotlight Ashanti Region’s rap talent in its fifth edition, with chart-topping artists Strongman and O’Kenneth set to lead a lineup celebrating Kumasi’s booming hip-hop scene.

Scheduled for April 21, 2025, the event aims to amplify local voices while offering camping experiences and pre-event activities at the lakeside venue in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

Ernest Opoku, Y102.5FM’s Event Manager, highlighted the cultural shift driving this year’s focus. “Kumasi’s rappers are no longer just local acts they’re national stars,” he said, referencing past struggles to secure headliners from the region. Strongman, known for tracks like Pilolo and Bossu, will anchor the festival with his high-energy performances, while O’Kenneth of the Asakaa Music Group brings hits such as Lonely Road and Agyeiwaa.

Beyond music, organizers have expanded the event into a weekend retreat. Camping options available from April 19 will allow attendees to explore lakeside trails and stargaze ahead of the main concert. Nathaniel Osei Kufuor, YFM-Kumasi’s General Manager, described the setup as a “transformative getaway,” blending entertainment with nature immersion.

The festival underscores Kumasi’s growing influence in Ghana’s music industry, particularly through the Asakaa drill movement, which has gained international traction since the late 2010s. Earlier editions of the Ankaase Lakeside Party primarily featured highlife and Afrobeats acts, but the 2025 pivot to rap reflects demand for genre diversity and youth-driven content. Similar shifts have been observed at events like the Kumasi Cultural Festival, where hip-hop segments now draw larger crowds than traditional performances.

Critics, however, question whether infrastructure at rural venues like Ankaase can sustainably accommodate expanding festivals. Past events in the Ashanti Region have faced logistical hurdles, including overcrowding and limited amenities. YFM’s decision to introduce camping a novelty in Ghana’s festival circuit will test organizational capacity and safety protocols.

As Ghana’s entertainment industry increasingly decentralizes, with hubs like Kumasi and Tamale rivaling Accra’s dominance, events like the Lakeside Party highlight regional cultural economies. Success here could inspire similar initiatives, though stakeholders stress the need for public-private partnerships to address funding and logistical gaps. With tickets already in demand, the 2025 edition may set a precedent for hyper-localized, genre-specific festivals reshaping Ghana’s live music landscape.

Debutant Bella Agyemang lauded for Box Office ‘Magic’

0

Debutant producer Bella Agyemang has been widely praised by entertainment industry players for her Box Office ‘magic’ over the weekend.

Bella’s movie, Check-In, has received acclaim for being the first film to achieve significant sales at the cinemas this year.

In an interview, the Sales and Marketing Lead at Silverbird Cinemas Ghana, Nana Kwame Obiri-Tete, said that Bella Agyemang performed exceptionally well for a first-time producer.

He expressed pride in Bella Agyemang’s efforts in drawing a large audience, highlighting her extensive marketing activities.

According to him, her street-level marketing activations, combined with other public relations efforts, were highly effective.

“With what she has done, it shows that Bella has a big future. You might have a good product, but if you fail to market it, you cannot get people to patronize it. Bella put in a lot of work, which is why she was able to draw a large crowd to the premiere,” Obiri-Tete said.

Bella Agyemang, for her part, expressed appreciation to fellow actors, her team, media personalities, and all stakeholders who supported her ahead of the premiere.

The much-anticipated, star-studded Ghanaian comedy movie Check-In premiered at Silverbird Cinemas on April 12, 2025.

The film tells the story of chaos and a blackout at a secluded hotel. Amidst the confusion, a resourceful attendant must unravel hidden connections between the guests and restore peace before secrets tear them apart.

Produced by Bella Agyemang, Check-In features an ensemble cast including Kofi Okyere-Darko (KOD), Clemento Suarez, Jeneral Ntatia, Priscilla Opoku-Agyeman, Felicia Osei, Gideon Kojo Boakye, Clinton Odoi, Fiifi Jefferson Pratt, and Gabriel Hogan, among others.

Leaked Petition: ‘Is Chief Justice in communication with Minority caucus’?

0

Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo and Edudzi Tameklo Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo and Edudzi Tameklo

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo, has questioned how the Minority in Parliament secured what they claim to be the content of the petition for the removal of the Chief Justice from office.

His question comes after the Minority in Parliament, at a press conference, condemned the petition to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing it as a blatant attempt to undermine the judiciary’s independence.

The MP for Suame, John Darko, who also serves as the Legal Counsel of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, argued that the grounds for the petition—including allegations that the Chief Justice advised the President on judicial promotions and presided over a contentious case—were “flimsy and politically motivated.”

“We see the spurious petition for the removal of the Chief Justice as a serious setback to our democratic journey,” he stated.

But commenting on the issue during a panel discussion on TV3, monitored by GhanaWeb, Edudzi Tameklo, who also doubles as the Director of Legal Affairs, said the process for the removal of Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo is highly confidential and has been handled as such by the Presidency.

He questioned how the supposed content of the petition was leaked.

“My learned senior says we were told… When the President received the petition and the Chief Justice wrote to request a copy, the President, in honouring the request, sealed the petition before giving it to her. Who informed the Minority of the details? Is Her Ladyship the Chief Justice in communication with the Minority? Because at this point, the petition is strictly between the President and the Chief Justice. In fact, to preserve the integrity of the process, the President sealed and marked the petition.

I have heard one journalist on Metro TV refer to what they claim is the content of the petition. Who leaked it to them and to the Minority? Who told them?” Edudzi Tameklo asked.

He further urged the Minority to trust the process for the removal of the Chief Justice, just as they trusted the process that led to the removal of Lauretta Lamptey, the former Commissioner of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

“How come that [John Darko], the Minority Spokesperson on Legal Affairs—his own colleague, Frank Annoh Dompreh—brought a petition for the removal of Lauretta Lamptey, and President Mahama didn’t say it was an NPP MP against his appointee? He received the petition, acted on it, found merit, and dismissed his own appointee.

How come that today, Annoh Dompreh and his Minority do not have confidence that President Mahama will do the same thing he did with Lauretta—affording her the opportunity to defend herself? Where is the fear, where is the panic?” Edudzi Tameklo questioned.

Naana Hayford Honored By Dr. Wayoosi, Reveals Mahama Paid Her Hospital Bills While NPP Ignored Her

0

Veteran Ghanaian actress, Naana Hayford, has become the center of public admiration and emotional reactions following her recent heartfelt revelations. During an appreciation event organized by popular Kumawood actor Dr. Wayoosi to honor the contributions of legends in the Ghanaian movie industry, Naana Hayford opened up about her struggles and the unexpected sources of support during her most challenging times.

Speaking emotionally at the event, Naana Hayford disclosed that former President John Dramani Mahama was the one who came to her aid by footing her hospital bills when she was seriously ill. According to the actress, despite her affiliation and past support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), she received no help from the party when she needed them most. This shocking revelation has since sparked conversations online about how public figures, especially veteran entertainers, are treated by the political parties they support.

“I have supported the NPP for many years, but when I was in the hospital battling for my life, it was former President Mahama who came through for me,” she revealed, with tears in her eyes. “None of the people I helped in the NPP showed up. It was Mahama, someone I didn’t expect, who paid for my hospital bills.”

Dr. Wayoosi, who organized the event to appreciate the unsung heroes of the entertainment industry, praised Naana Hayford for her immense contribution to the growth of Ghanaian cinema, especially in the local language film sector. He stressed the need for Ghanaians to remember and celebrate their legends while they are still alive.

Naana Hayford’s story has since gone viral, drawing mixed reactions. While many have applauded Mahama for his act of kindness, others have criticized the NPP for allegedly abandoning one of their own. The incident has also reignited debates about the welfare of aging actors in Ghana, and whether political affiliations really guarantee any form of support when it matters most.

As tributes pour in for Naana Hayford, her revelation serves as a stark reminder of the need for unity, compassion, and a re-evaluation of how society and political bodies treat cultural icons in their moments of need.

1 minute read

It is a common norm to pay either GH¢2, GH¢1 or in some instances GH¢0.50pesewas for the usage of public washrooms in many parts of Ghana.

The practice has gradually extended to many health facilities, following which the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in a circular to all regional directors has noted that its attention has been drawn to the charging of fees for use of washrooms in some Ghana Health Service facilities.

In the circular dated April 16, 2025 and signed by Prof Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the acting Director General of the GHS, it was noted that the washrooms are an integral part of the hospital infrastructure intended to provide comfort for patients and visitors and should not be used as avenues for exploitation,

“The washrooms must all times be kept clean and comfortable to prevent the risk of infection, improve perception of patient care quality and increate patient satisfaction.

“Regional Directors are accordingly requested to ensure that this practice ceases with immediate effect. Failure by facility heads to adhere to this directive will attract sanctions.

“Kindly bring this to the notice of Heads of facilities for strict compliance,” it added.

Table of Men not PR machine for gospel acts, currently on break

0

Kwasi Ernest, CEO of Media Excel and a prominent member of the Table of Men (ToM) Kwasi Ernest, CEO of Media Excel and a prominent member of the Table of Men (ToM)

Kwasi Ernest, CEO of Media Excel and a prominent member of the Table of Men (ToM), has responded to growing calls from music fans urging the group to lead a campaign for Gospel musicians in the Artiste of the Year (AoTY) category at the upcoming 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), scheduled for May 10.

This year, Team Eternity Ghana (TEG) and Joe Mettle are the Gospel representatives competing for the top prize against Black Sherif, King Paluta, King Promise, and Kweku Smoke.

Joe Mettle made history in 2017 as the first Gospel musician to win the AoTY title. Diana Hamilton followed suit in 2021. In 2023, Piesie Esther came close but ultimately lost to Black Sherif.

ToM notably campaigned for Diana Hamilton during her winning year, and with TEG’s strong presence on the music charts—thanks to their Testimony tape featuring the hit Defe Defe—fans on social media have speculated on the impact ToM’s support could have on TEG’s chances this year.

However, speaking to Graphic Showbiz, Kwasi Ernest clarified that ToM does not support an artiste solely because they are a Gospel act. He emphasized that while the group is committed to promoting Gospel musicians, campaigns must be primarily led by the artiste’s management team.

“Table of Men is not biased. People need to understand that we are not a PR machine for Gospel artistes,” he said. “It’s only proper that any artiste who gets a nomination should have their team lead the campaign.”

He continued, “However, if they believe Table of Men has influence and our support could improve their chances, why not? We are ready to help because we stand for the promotion and well-being of the Gospel music industry.”

Ernest further noted, “We can’t just get up and start campaigning for an artiste. Besides, we don’t even know the strategy their management may have put in place. Until we are officially invited to support, which we’ll gladly do, there’s no point in blaming us. That should be the standard.”

He also revealed that ToM is currently on a break from advocacy campaigns and is focusing on initiatives aimed at strengthening the industry. These include artistic training programs, vocal seminars, distribution services, and marketing and promotional support.

Ghana is now led by incompetent bunch of arrogant braggarts – Dennis Miracles

0

A communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, is of the view that Ghana is being led by a group of incompetent people who lied their way to power.

He explains that, apart from the fact that cement prices have increased astronomically, there is also a shortage on the market.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye made this known in a tweet responding to an old tweet from the current government spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

He said, “Cement prices have increased by a whopping 45 cedis under 4 months of your presidency. In 8 years, it increased by 55 cedis under the NPP. Cement price in 2016 – 30 cedis, Cement price in January 2025 – 85 cedis, Cement price in April 2025 – 130 cedis.”

He added, “To make it worse, there’s the worst-ever shortage in cement supply in the country. You can’t even find it to buy! Clueless, ever-incompetent bunch of arrogant braggarts who just scammed their way into power.”

Energy expert warns new electricity tariffs could fuel unemployment

0

The Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy, Benjamin Nsiah, has cautioned that Ghana’s recent electricity tariff hike could have far-reaching negative consequences for the economy—particularly for industry and employment.

His warning comes in response to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) latest tariff adjustment, which will see electricity prices increase by an average of 14.75% starting May 3, 2025.

The PURC attributed the increase to the depreciation of the cedi, rising inflation, higher fuel costs—especially for natural gas—and the current energy generation mix.

Mr. Nsiah argued that the rationale behind the increase fails to consider its broader economic implications.

“In my view, inflation is already captured within the depreciation of the currency, so factoring it again into end-user tariffs results in double costing—and that double costing will hurt our economy significantly,” he said.

Mr. Nsiah explained that higher electricity tariffs lead to increased production costs for businesses, which then drive up the Producer Price Index (PPI) and, subsequently, the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

He warned that this chain reaction often prompts the Bank of Ghana to implement monetary tightening measures—raising interest rates—which ultimately makes credit more expensive for industries already operating under tight margins.

“When electricity tariffs go up, the cost of production rises.

This drives the PPI up, which then affects the CPI. When the CPI increases, inflation rises, and the Bank of Ghana responds by tightening monetary policy.

That cycle ends up choking businesses,” he explained.

He noted that local industries are already grappling with high operating costs and warned that repeated upward tariff reviews, without careful consideration, could threaten their survival.

“Increasing the policy rate makes borrowing costly for industries. This cycle of tariff adjustments traps the economy in a loop of rising costs and shrinking productivity,” Nsiah stated.

He called on policymakers to critically assess the timing and necessity of electricity tariff reviews, warning that unchecked increases could make local industries less competitive and result in job losses.

“If we keep pushing tariffs upward without a long-term strategy, our industries will suffer, and many may resort to staff cuts or layoffs. This could ultimately increase unemployment and slow economic growth,” he added.

He made these remarks on Channel One’s Newsroom on Friday, April 18.

Week 28 Match Preview – Hearts of Oak vs Karela United

0

Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara finds himself under mounting pressure ahead of Sunday’s crucial Ghana Premier League clash with Karela United at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ouattara, who has faced criticism from fans and frequent tension with journalists, knows that another disappointing result could cost him his job.

Despite guiding the Phobians through a strong spell earlier this year that saw them climb into the top four, recent results have been underwhelming. Hearts have picked up just one win in their last five matches (two draws and two defeats), slipping to 7th place on the table with 41 points.

The team’s defence remains one of the strongest in the league, with only 17 goals conceded. However, their attacking returns have been modest, with just 22 goals scored in 27 games. On home soil, Hearts have been inconsistent, recording three wins and two losses in their last five fixtures.

Karela United, meanwhile, are in urgent need of points. A 2-0 defeat to FC Samartex 1996 on Wednesday has left them 16th with 28 points. Their attack continues to falter, having scored only 17 goals this season — the joint-lowest in the league. Their away form offers little encouragement, with four defeats and a draw in their last five trips.

The head-to-head record at the Accra Sports Stadium leans slightly in favour of Hearts, who are unbeaten in four home league games against Karela since 2020 — one win and three draws. Last season, the Phobians secured a 3-1 victory in their most recent meeting at the venue.

Sunday’s outcome could determine the immediate future of Ouattara, while Karela seek crucial survival points in the capital.

At This Point, Being Buried Alive Wouldn’t Bother Me–Afia Pokua

0

Celebrated Ghanaian journalist Afia Pokuaa, popularly known as Vim Lady, has publicly opened up about her emotional struggles following the Manhyia Palace’s refusal to accept her repeated apologies. In a heartfelt video posted on TikTok, Pokuaa poured out her pain and frustration, revealing how the backlash has taken a heavy toll on her mental health.

The ongoing controversy stems from comments she allegedly made about Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered Asantehene. Although the exact nature of her remarks remains unclear, they provoked strong criticism from the Manhyia Palace and many Asanteman sympathizers. Despite issuing several public apologies, Pokuaa says her efforts have been ignored.

“No matter how often I apologize, it seems like I’ll never be forgiven. I’m so exhausted,” she shared tearfully. Her words painted a picture of someone battling deep emotional distress.

The video, raw and vulnerable, also featured a shocking statement that left many of her fans alarmed. “I’m so tired of life. At this point, being buried alive wouldn’t bother me,” she said. This sparked a wave of concern across social media, with supporters urging her to stay strong and seek help.

Many have since taken to various platforms to express both sympathy and criticism. While some believe the Palace should show compassion, others argue that the dignity of the Asantehene must remain protected.

Afia Pokuaa, a respected figure in Ghanaian media, now finds herself at the center of a cultural and emotional storm. Her plight has reopened conversations about mental health, forgiveness, and the weight of tradition in Ghanaian society.

Jobs, trade tensions take spotlight at 2025 IMF/WBG Spring Meetings

0

As the world grapples with economic uncertainty, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) are set to convene for their highly anticipated Spring Meetings in 2025.

The meetings will take place from April 21–26 in Washington, D.C., under the theme: “Jobs – The Path to Prosperity,” aimed at exploring international cooperation on the future of job creation.

This comes as the two Bretton Woods institutions estimate that approximately 1.2 billion young people in emerging economies will reach working age over the next decade, but only about 420 million jobs will be available to them.

The gathering of global leaders, finance ministers and central bank governors, policymakers, and experts will focus on exploring solutions to recent trade tariff tensions and shaping the future of international cooperation.

It will also serve as a platform for a call to action for global leaders to work together to address pressing economic challenges and build a more prosperous and sustainable future for all.

Ahead of the meetings, Mr Ajay Banga, President of the WBG, highlighted the risk posed by the disparity between workforce growth and available jobs, noting that without opportunity, the forces of fragility, illegal migration, and instability could intensify.

He urged developing countries to establish the right systems and frameworks that allow the private sector to contribute financing and investment, particularly in infrastructure and regulatory environments conducive to job creation.

Mr Banga said the Bank would expand its Private Sector Investment Lab to include the most critical sectors for job creation—energy and infrastructure, agribusiness, healthcare, tourism, and manufacturing.

He reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to creating meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities, stating: “The idea is to build a Bank that delivers what is demanded—jobs—because jobs are the best way to drive a nail in the coffin of poverty.”

On global trade tariff tensions, he noted that the Bank was engaged in constructive dialogue with the US administration, despite prevailing uncertainty. “They’re asking the right questions, and we’re trying to give them the right answers,” he said.

The World Bank chief called for more efficient border processes, reduced trade costs, clearer rules of origin, and decreased friction to boost trade volumes and provide more stable and diversified growth in developing economies.

Ms Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, observed that the resilience seen about six months ago was now being tested by the ongoing reshaping of the global trading system.

She outlined three consequences of the current trade tensions: costly uncertainty, a negative impact on short-term economic growth, and long-term productivity erosion—especially in smaller economies—caused by protectionism.

She called for a reset of global trends towards lower tariff rates and the reduction of non-tariff barriers and distortions, noting the importance of cooperation in a multipolar world.

Ms Georgieva expressed confidence in the Spring Meetings, calling them “a vital forum for dialogue at a vital time.”

“All countries, large and small alike, can—and should—play their part in strengthening the global economy in an era of more frequent and severe shocks,” she said.

The IMF chief added that when pushed “hard enough, things that were not possible become possible, mountains that couldn’t be climbed are climbed, vested interests that would not retreat are overcome.”

She called for cool heads, clear vision, and strong will, concluding: “We need a more resilient world economy, not a drift toward division. And to facilitate the transition, policies must allow private economic agents time to adjust and deliver.”

Leaked Mike Oquaye Report Reveals “Presidential Chair” Symbolized NPP Disconnect with Suffering Ghanaians

0

A presidential staffer quoted in the document recounted a moment of public frustration: “One frustrated citizen in Kumbungu was overheard saying, ‘We don’t even have chairs in our schools, yet his chair gets a luxurious V8 ride!’”

A leaked excerpt from the Prof. Mike Oquaye Report, commissioned by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to investigate its crushing defeat in the 2024 General Elections, has revealed shocking details of the perceived extravagance of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration — with a special focus on what has now been dubbed the “Chair of Mystery.”

NPP’s decision not to release Oquaye’s report to shield actors of 2024 defeat-Asante Okyere

0

A political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region, Dr. Jonathan Asante Okyere, has suggested that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is deliberately withholding the findings of the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee report on the party’s 2024 electoral defeat to protect certain influential figures.

Speaking in an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s midday news on Thursday, April 17, 2025, Dr. Okyere claimed that the party’s decision not only to keep the report private but also to bar members from discussing its contents is aimed at shielding individuals whose actions contributed to the party’s loss in the December 7 general elections.

While acknowledging that the party has the right to withhold the report, the political science lecturer argued that making at least parts of it public would promote transparency and help guide future strategies.

“It is troubling that the party leadership is preventing members from commenting on the report. Members should have been given the space to express their views on what went wrong in the elections,” he remarked.

Dr. Okyere further observed that the lack of transparency is enabling certain powerful figures within the NPP to maintain their grip on the party, warning that this could hinder internal reforms and renewal efforts.

The Prof. Mike Oquaye committee was tasked with investigating the reasons behind the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections and submitted its report to the party’s national leadership earlier this week. However, the findings have not yet been made public.

Kofi Bentil proposes ways to remove constitutionally protected officers without political influence

A Vice President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, is of the view that politicians should take their hands off the process of removing constitutionally protected officers.

He believes that those whose work is directly affected by the occupants of such offices should be the ones to determine whether these individuals should be removed or not.

To Kofi Bentil, the attempt to remove people in these offices was wrong yesterday and remains wrong today.

Sharing his opinion via social media, he wrote:

“I associate with the view stressed on Newsfile that politicians must take their hands off the removal of Chief Justices and other constitutionally protected officers. It was wrong yesterday and is still wrong today.

I have always said, and I repeat, that the best people to determine whether someone is performing well or not are those who work with the person and those who are affected by their work.

In the case of the Chief Justice, it is lawyers, judges, and litigants. We can excuse litigants because those who lose cases will almost always be upset, and vice versa. But lawyers and judges experience both wins and losses regularly, and they know whether a judge is competent or not.”

Here’s my proposal:

When a petition is received, a prima facie case must be established by the President’s office. If none exists, the petition should be thrown out.

Once a prima facie case is established, Parliament should be the forum to determine whether the case warrants consideration for the removal of the Chief Justice.

If Parliament decides that the matter should proceed, the judiciary and lawyers must vote on whether to remove or retain the Chief Justice—based on a simple majority.

The advantages of this approach:

A. It removes the process from the hands of politicians.

B. It makes it more difficult to remove a Chief Justice on a whim.

C. It holds the Chief Justice more accountable to their judicial peers and the legal community.

D. It prevents politicians from threatening or intimidating the Chief Justice into doing their bidding.

Gov’t to track down illegal mining excavator owners – Defence Minister

0

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has announced a decisive move by the government to pursue the owners of excavators used in illegal mining activities, as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed efforts to combat the galamsey menace.

Speaking on the latest developments in the anti-galamsey fight, Dr. Boamah disclosed that authorities have successfully obtained the chassis numbers of several seized excavators—marking a significant step toward identifying the individuals behind the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining operations.

“As promised last month, we are glad to report that some chassis numbers of seized excavators used to perpetrate galamsey—an environmental sin against humanity and God—have been secured,” the Defence Minister stated.

He extended his appreciation to the Ghana Police Service for their cooperation in the ongoing efforts, adding that the information will help identify and track the “big people” behind the scenes who fund and benefit from galamsey.

“These chassis numbers will aid President Mahama’s determined and sustained fight against illegal mining,” Dr. Boamah noted.

“We are using them to trace the owners, asking key questions: Who imported the excavators? Who bought them? For what purpose? Why are they being used for galamsey?”

He emphasised that this approach is part of a broader, innovative strategy to address illegal mining from its roots, in line with President Mahama’s commitment to a comprehensive, root-and-branch eradication of the galamsey threat.

Morocco were crowned champions of the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time Morocco were crowned champions of the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time

Morocco were crowned champions of the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history after defeating two-time winners Mali 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw in Saturday’s final at the Stade El Bachir in Mohammedia.

The hosts held their nerve in the shootout, with goalkeeper Zakaria Alaoui saving two penalties to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters after a tense and balanced final between two of the tournament’s standout teams.

This triumph ends Morocco’s wait for a continental title at this level, coming two years after they finished as runners-up to Senegal. For Mali, it was a fifth final appearance and another painful near miss despite controlling large spells of the game.

Both sides had chances during regular time, with Ilies Belmokhtar and Ahmed Mouhoub testing Mali from distance, while Seydou Dembélé and Soumaila Fané caused problems for the Moroccan defence. Fané had a first-half goal disallowed by VAR for handball in the build-up.

The shootout saw Morocco convert all four of their spot-kicks with confidence, while Mali’s Issa Koné and Lamine Keita had their attempts saved.

Coach Nabil Baha’s team impressed throughout the tournament, conceding just once, and showed tactical discipline and resilience in the final to seal a historic win.

You Are a Shapeless And Disrespectful Woman- Lawyer Maurice Ampaw Fires Back at Yaa Titi

News Hub Creator19h

Legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has issued a harsh rebuke to television host Yaa Titi, accusing her of inappropriate conduct on air. Ampaw did not hold back, referring to her as a “useless woman” who, in his view, frequently makes thoughtless and offensive statements.

He condemned Titi for what he sees as a lack of respect, especially towards men, suggesting that her controversial remarks are motivated by money from the NDC. According to Ampaw, “She speaks nonsense all the time. If she were my daughter, I wouldn’t even request a dowry because she’s not worth it—she’s shapeless.”

The lawyer further argued that her actions undermine the standards of public discourse and television, asserting that she has no business being on TV if she uses it to insult others. “Because NDC has given her money, she thinks she can come and insult us. This is a warning to her,” he stated.

Ampaw’s outburst has prompted mixed reactions online, with some calling for Yaa Titi to reconsider her approach and be more mindful of her public comments, given her influence as a media personality.

Sad News Hits NPP as Another Member Has Reportedly Been Arrested By OSP

News Hub Creator17h

Another storm appears to be brewing in Ghana’s political environment following reports that Gordon Asare-Bediako, a notable figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The information was disclosed on Facebook by NPP member PK Sarpong, who voiced dismay over the development.

Sarpong alleged that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng authorized the detention of Asare-Bediako based on accusations that he falsely suggested a private jet was being procured for the OSP. While the basis of the claim and the reasoning behind the arrest remain vague, the situation has ignited widespread conversation across political circles and social platforms.

Asare-Bediako’s reputation for bold political commentary has made his alleged arrest particularly controversial. Many have raised concerns about the implications for freedom of speech and whether his detention was a necessary legal measure or an attempt to mute political criticism.

The OSP has not released any formal communication regarding the situation. If the allegations by PK Sarpong hold water, the public will be eager to learn about the next steps—whether Asare-Bediako will face charges or be released. The incident has fueled speculation about a possible clampdown on political activists and commentators.

Coming amid ongoing political friction post-elections, this development could further polarize public opinion and deepen rifts within the nation’s political factions.

Regardless of the outcome, the reported arrest of Gordon Asare-Bediako has already intensified political discourse. Whether justified or not, the incident underscores the fragile balance between legal accountability and freedom of political expression in Ghana.

Oquaye Report Leaks: Bawumia’s Debate Call Described as ‘Reckless’ and ‘Suicidal’

Pressure is now mounting on the NEC to make the report public, with some party activists and civil society groups arguing that full disclosure is the only way to begin the healing process and rebuild ahead of the next election cycle.

A leaked excerpt from the confidential Mike Oquaye Report has revealed damning details about the internal missteps that led to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) crushing defeat in the 2024 general elections, pointing directly at the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

‘It was the most regrettable experience in my life’

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Mahama has shared what he described as the “most regrettable experience” of his life after attempting to set up a family member in business.

Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum on Saturday, April 19, the former president recounted how, in an effort to ease the financial burden of his parliamentary income, he purchased a bus over ten years ago for a relative to operate a small transportation business.

Rather than proving beneficial, the venture turned into a regrettable experience that taught him a valuable lesson about corporate responsibility and trust.

He explained that the bus was handed over to a driver who overworked it to the point that the axle broke, resulting in expensive and time-consuming repairs that ultimately undermined the purpose of the initiative.

“Anytime you saw the bus, it had more load on top of it than inside it. So what happened? The axle broke down, and it was the most regrettable experience of my life. When the axle broke down, they came to me to buy a new one. The whole purpose of buying the bus was defeated. Every time it broke down, they would come to me for repairs. It was costing me more to fix the bus than if I had just handed the money to them,” he said.

The situation worsened when he discovered that the driver—who was living in the family home—had started building a house using income from the mismanaged transportation business. That building, Mahama noted, remains incomplete to this day.

“So I refused to repair the bus and decided to dispose of it. I sold the bus. This was several years ago, probably more than ten years now. And ever since I sold the bus, that building, which had reached the lintel level, is still at lintel level—even today.”

President Mahama’s story was in response to a point made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had noted that many businesses fail not due to a lack of funding, but because of unreliable partners or staff.

Mr. Mahama agreed, stressing that “finding reliable partners to collaborate with” remains one of the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs and a major obstacle to the growth of the industrial sector.

“There are business owners bringing in foreign managers to oversee their operations because they can’t trust local hires—that’s an indictment on our human resource,” he said.

He urged forum attendees to prioritize loyalty and integrity as core values for building sustainable business cultures.

“If you want to suck your pound of flesh out of a business and kill it, no industry will grow,” he cautioned.
