2026 Commonwealth Games In Doubt

0

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are in doubt after the Australian state of Victoria cancelled its plans to host due to budget blowouts.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) struggled to find a host before Victoria volunteered in April 2022.

But the premier said the projected cost had now tripled and become “well and truly too much” for the state to bear.

CGF called the decision “hugely disappointing” and said it is “committed to finding a solution”.

The Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport tournament that takes place every four years. They have only ever been cancelled during World War Two.

To be eligible to participate in the games, competitors must be from one of the Commonwealth’s 56 members. Most of the countries in the Commonwealth were once part of the British Empire.

Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, yesterday said Victoria had been “happy to help out” when approached to host last year, but “not at any price.”

Organisers had originally estimated the event, hosted across cities including Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat, would cost A$2.6bn (£1.4bn; $1.8bn) and the state government had billed it as a boost for the regions.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of France striker, Christopher Nkunku from Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig.

The 25-year-old scored 16 goals in 25 games in the Bundesliga last season.

Nkunku, who has won 10 caps for France, is manager Mauricio Pochettino’s first signing since he took charge in May.

The former PSG striker has agreed a six-year contract, which will begin on 1 July.

“I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea,’ said Nkunku. ‘A big effort was made to bring me to the club and I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and teammates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch,” he told Chelsea website.

“Having played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, I now want to play in the Premier League, one of the strongest leagues in the world. I am very excited for this challenge and will be proud to wear the Chelsea shirt.”

Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, said: “Christopher has proved himself one of the standout attacking players in European football over the past two seasons and will add quality, creativity and versatility to our squad.”

Nkunku, whose Chelsea contract starts on 1 July, won three Ligue 1 titles and two French Cups during four years at Paris St-Germain before joining Leipzig in 2019.

He was named Bundesliga player of the season and German PFA player of the season in 2021-22 after scoring 20 goals and contributing 15 assists in the league.

Nkunku made his France debut last year but missed the World Cup campaign because of a leg injury.

Fresh Produce is healthier –

0

Recently, the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Michael Regan, made headlines when he suggested that people should go back to buying their food in leaves, claiming that it is a healthier option than buying pre-packaged foods.

While this may seem like a radical suggestion to some, there is some truth to the idea that buying fresh produce and avoiding pre-packaged and processed foods can be healthier. However, the idea of buying food in leaves may not be practical or feasible for most people in today’s modern society.

Firstly, it’s worth considering the potential benefits of buying fresh produce. Fresh fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients that are important for overall health and wellbeing. Eating a diet that is rich in fresh produce has been linked to a lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

On the other hand, pre-packaged and processed foods tend to be high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium, which can contribute to health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

So, in theory, buying food in leaves could be a healthier option if it means that people are consuming more fresh produce and avoiding pre-packaged and processed foods. However, in practice, this idea may not be realistic for a number of reasons.

Firstly, buying food in leaves would require a significant shift in the way that we currently produce and consume food. Most of the food that we buy in grocery stores and supermarkets is packaged in plastic or other materials to keep it fresh and prevent spoilage. While some types of produce, such as leafy greens, are sold in bags or clamshells, these containers are still made from plastic or other materials.

To move towards buying food in leaves, we would need to find new and innovative ways to package and transport fresh produce without the use of plastic or other harmful materials. This could involve the development of new biodegradable packaging materials, or a shift towards more local and sustainable farming practices that reduce the need for long-distance transportation.

In addition to the challenges related to packaging and transportation, there are also practical challenges related to the storage and preparation of fresh produce. Most fresh fruits and vegetables have a relatively short shelf life, and they need to be stored properly to prevent spoilage. This can be difficult for people who don’t have access to a refrigerator or other storage facilities.

Furthermore, preparing fresh produce can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. Many people today rely on pre-packaged and processed foods because they are convenient and require minimal preparation. Buying food in leaves would require a significant investment of time and effort to clean, chop, and prepare fresh produce on a daily basis.

In conclusion, while the idea of buying food in leaves may seem appealing from a health perspective, it is not a practical or feasible solution for most people in today’s modern society. Instead, we need to find new and innovative ways to make fresh produce more accessible and convenient for people, while also reducing our reliance on pre-packaged and processed foods.

This could involve a combination of approaches, such as improving access to fresh produce in low-income communities, incentivizing farmers to grow more sustainable and locally sourced produce, and developing new packaging materials and storage solutions that are more environmentally friendly. By taking a comprehensive approach to improving our food system, we can help to promote better health outcomes for individuals and communities, while also protecting our planet for future generations.

Alejandro Garnacho scored an incredible goal against Everton –

0

Manchester United winger Antony missed the club’s 3-0 Premier League win over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday because of an injury.

Antony joined United’s injury ranks ahead of the trip to Merseyside with what the Manchester Evening News summarised as a “knock”. The Brazilian wasn’t considered fit enough to play and therefore didn’t even take up a place on the bench.

He joins Casemiro, Rasmus Hojlund, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and others out of action, although the assessment doesn’t appear to be a serious one.

Having started United’s first four Premier League games of the season, albeit without a goal or assist to his name, and a near automatic starter when fit during his debut campaign, Antony has struggled to reclaim a regular place since being reintegrated into the squad following a period of leave.

The former Ajax star was given permission to spend several weeks back home in Brazil during and after the September international break when he was accused of assault by multiple women. Antony has strongly denied the allegations but the matter is ongoing.

United boss Erik ten Hag publicly backed Antony earlier this month to rediscover his form.

“That is also team, first, and the team is not playing well when we don’t bring him the balls and I am also responsible for that,” the United boss said at a press conference prior to beating Fulham.

“But obviously, there was also a lot of noise and that dropped his levels. He can do better but all the players can do better. Antony is also a fighter, he has the confidence, he is brave and I am confident he will bring the performance, that he is the right player for us.”

Last season, Antony showed flashes of quality that had made the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all take an interest in him, notably finding the net in each of his first three Premier League appearances and scoring the goal that saw United knock Barcelona out of the Europa League. But he was too inconsistent, while injuries also contributed to his campaign tailing off.

NCA Shuts Down 4 Radio Stations

0

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that some four radio stations in Bawku, Upper East Region, were shut down on Saturday, February 24, 2024, over issues of security.

The radio stations are Bawku FM, Source FM, Zahra FM, and Gumah FM.

The commission indicated that the decision to shut down the radio stations follows the recommendations of the Upper East Regional Security Council, and the advice of the Ministry of National Security that the operations of the said radio stations and the incendiary utterances of their panelists/presenters have contributed to the escalation of the Bawku conflict, leading to loss of lives and property in Bawku and its environs.

As a result, the NCA has invoked its powers to shut down the stations in accordance with Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775) which provides that, “The Authority may suspend or revoke a license or a frequency authorisation where the suspension or revocation is necessary because of national security or is in the public interest.”

“The NCA will continue to work with all relevant stakeholders to execute its mandate as set out by law and calls on stakeholders to adhere to the tenets and regulations governing the communications industry,” the statement read.

A proud mother has shared what can be considered one of the most beautiful news that came out from the Call of the Bar on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Obuobia Darko-Opoku, a former parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress for the Weija-Gbawe constituency, shared a post congratulating her son, while also announcing her own graduation from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

Expressing her joy in a post on her Facebook wall, the journalist cum philanthropist detailed how, as a single parent, she struggled to see her son through school, while challenging herself to also achieve more in her academics.

“Today, as I stand on the threshold of a new chapter in my life, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and accomplishment. I look back on the journey that has led me to this moment and cannot help but reflect on the choices and sacrifices that brought me here.

“As a single parent, I made the conscious decision to pause some of my own aspirations to ensure that my children had the best opportunities for their education. It was a choice made with love, one that I would make again without hesitation. When my first child, Nana Amadieh, was on the verge of entering the Ghana school of law, I knew it was time to revisit the dreams I had set aside. With renewed determination, I hit the classroom, embarking on a journey to attain my first master’s degree in Public Relations from GIJ. It was not an easy path, but I was resolute in my commitment to do it stronger than ever before,” she wrote.

She also used the opportunity to reflect on her journey and to thank all those who have supported her along the way.

“Today, as I proudly watch Kofi being called to the bar, I find myself graduating with my second master’s degree in Branding and Communication from UPSA. This dual celebration is a testament to the power of resilience and the rewards that come from making difficult decisions.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to God for guiding us on this remarkable journey and bringing us this far. I am not only a proud mother today, but I am also a fulfilled individual who has learned that hard decisions can yield the most beautiful and rewarding results. As I graduate today, I share this moment with all of you who have been a part of my journey. Your support, encouragement, and love have been my driving force.

“This is not just my achievement; it is a celebration of our collective perseverance and determination. Here’s to new beginnings and the endless possibilities that lie ahead,” she added.

Ama Dokua’s campaign billboards vandalized in Okaikwei North

0

At least six giant billboards belonging to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei North, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, have been destroyed by unknown persons.

The billboards, which were erected at strategic locations including Kata Hostel, Nii Boye Town, and Achimota, were defaced on March 1, 2024, causing significant damage amounting to thousands of Ghana cedis.

According to reports from the constituency in the Greater Accra region, the destruction appears to be targeted and deliberate, with no apparent reasons behind the vandalism.

Ruling NPP members have pointed fingers at suspected foul play instigated by members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly implicating the incumbent NDC MP Theresa Awuni.

Speaking on behalf of the NPP constituency in Okaikwei North, Kwabena Amoako, the constituency organiser, condemned the incident, emphasising that it has been reported to the police for investigation. Amoako expressed suspicion that NDC members were behind the destruction, suggesting a ploy to tarnish the image of the NPP parliamentary candidate by portraying her as a violent individual.

“Instead of focusing on how to do their campaign, they try to attack her during her events. They always want to provoke her to create the impression that she is violent. We hope the security agencies will take this issue up to prevent it from escalating,” Amoako stated.

Confirming the incident, the police have assured that investigations are underway. However, the NDC office in the constituency has yet to respond to queries regarding the matter.

The Okaikwei North constituency has garnered attention as one of the hotly contested areas ahead of the upcoming elections. Despite being considered a safe seat for the ruling NPP, the constituency witnessed a surprising victory for the opposition NDC in the December 2020 elections, with growing discontent among party supporters against the former MP, Fuseini Issah.

As tensions escalate in the run-up to the 2024 elections, the destruction of the NPP billboards underscores the intensifying political competition in Ghana’s electoral landscape, raising concerns about potential acts of sabotage and violence.

District Level Elections: Five electoral areas in Cape Coast put on hold

0

By Isaac Arkoh,

Cape Coast, Dec. 19, GNA – Elections in five Electoral Areas in the Cape Coast Metropolis have been put on hold by the Electoral Commission (EC).

This is because the voting materials of the affected Areas were not included in the materials supplied.

They are Kru town, Turom, Tamesase, University new site (Kwaprow) and Etsifi-Eyifua.

“The Cape Coast Metro Office of the EC is yet to receive ballots papers for these electoral areas,” Mr Robert Asenso, the Metro EC Director, told the Ghana News Agency.

“The ballot papers have not arrived, so we are still waiting, and my men are on the ground.”

He could not ascribe any reason for the challenge; however, he urged the electorate in the affected communities to exercise restraints.

The incumbent Assemblyman, Mr Cole Arthur, an aspirant for the Kru Town Electoral Area, was sad at the turn of events but optimistic of retaining the seat.

Some frustrated electorates appealed to the EC to remedy the situation to enable them to exercise their franchise.

Voting was ongoing at the remaining 40 polling centres as of 9:15hrs.

Our Quest Is To Improve Informal Pension Coverage In Ghana – NPRA |

0

The National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) as part of its quest to improve informal pension coverage in Ghana and also ensure holistic pension literacy among the populace, is organising its third National Pensions Awareness Week.

The move is to educate and sensitise both formal and informal sector workers on pension matters.

As part of the week’s celebrations, the Authority seeks to organise a Fair on Pensions from Monday, 23rd October to Wednesday 25th October 2023 at the Forecourt of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly each day.

All Pension Scheme providers among other stakeholders are showcasing their pension products and services to the general public to explain and encourage all workers to enrol on pension schemes.

Those already on pension schemes will be guided to enhance their pension benefits when they retire to help alleviate old-age poverty.

The Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Honourable Ignatius Baffour Awuah will open the fair on Monday and will be organised alongside symposia to provide pension knowledge to participants. Participation is free.

The fair which is under the theme, “My Pension; My Future” is expected to provide a platform for identifiable groups like the Driver Unions, Market Women, Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association Tailors and Dressmakers Association, Ghana Hoteliers Association, the Ghana Enterprise Agency and other Individual self-employed to formulate pension schemes for members.

The NPRA places high importance on pensions for all Ghanaians. Pension provision has now become a human rights issue under the United Nations Convention. Pension Schemes have now become the necessary substitute as an old-age security system for the aged, and also as a modern mechanism to provide retirement income to the aged for maintenance of their standard of living.

The self-employed and all employees are encouraged to take advantage of this event to ensure their retirement income security.

Ugandan MPs Reject Birth Control For 15-Year-Old Girls |

0

Ugandan lawmakers have rejected a government proposal to allow 15-year-old girls to access birth control pills to reduce high levels of pregnancy.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa called the idea “devilish”, saying it would “formalise [the] defilement” of girls.

A senior health ministry official said the “stigma” around young people using contraceptives should end.

Nearly a quarter of 15- to 19-year-old girls in Uganda are either pregnant or are already mothers, a survey says.

The rate increased sharply during the Covid lockdown when schools were shut for almost two years.

During a highly charged parliamentary debate on Tuesday, MP Lucy Akello questioned whether the age of consent was being lowered from the current 18 years to 15 years, the state-owned New Vision newspaper reported.

She described the proposal to offer contraceptives to 15-year-old girls as “scary”.

Ms Akello said she did not use contraceptives. “I use the natural method, the one God gave me.”

In her response to the debate, Primary Healthcare Minister Margaret Muhanga said the proposal had not been approved by the government but had been made by a senior medical officer, Dr Charles Olaro.

She asked if it was better for a child to get pregnant and then go on to die while giving birth, adding there was “so many teenage pregnancies”.

Dr Olaro told the privately owned Daily Monitor newspaper that access to reproductive health information was “not just a matter of choice; it is a matter of fundamental rights”.

“It is essential that we foster an environment where youth can access information on sexual and reproductive health and contraceptives for those in need without stigma, discrimination, or judgment,” Dr Olaro was quoted as saying.

However, the deputy speaker said the proposal “should never see the light of day”.

Uganda is a deeply religious society, and a group of religious leaders has also opposed the proposal, saying teenagers should just abstain from sex.

Sanitation Ministry ineffective, I’ll dissolve it

0

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has announced plans to dissolve the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources due to its perceived ineffectiveness if he becomes president in 2025.

In addition, he has suggested consolidating several other underperforming ministries, including the Aviation and Railways Ministries, into the Transport Ministry.

During a Special Public Lecture at the Wisconsin International University College in Accra on Wednesday, Mr. Mahama emphasised the need for a comprehensive development strategy that diversifies focus within the sector.

“We will close down the Ministry of Sanitation, one, to reduce expenditure and two I don’t see any use. The country is dirtier than when there was no Ministry of Sanitation.

“Indeed, this country was cleaner when sanitation was under Local Government than as a standalone Ministry and we will close that Ministry and we will take the Sanitation schedule back to Local Government because we want to reduce government expenditure.”

“It is not only the Sanitation Ministry, in Transport, Aviation and Railways, we are going to close them down and send them back to the Trasport Ministry. We are going to combine Communications and Information again. So we want to reduce the number of ministries,” he stated.

The NGO says it additionally discovered that the project will involve excessive dredging and land reclamation likely to result in destruction if the indigenous tree species the endangered mangrove forests. The NGO also argues that the government has not produced any environmental impact if the project.

State raked in GH¢2.45billion from SML-GRA contract – KPMG report –

0

KPMG’s audit report has revealed that the revenue assurance contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) has resulted in an increase in state tax revenue.

According to the report, the contract led to a significant increase in volumes, with a recorded rise of 1.7 billion litres, and consequently, an increase in tax revenue to the State amounting to GH¢ 2.45 billion.

Additionally, the report highlighted qualitative benefits, such as the implementation of 24/7 electronic real-time monitoring of outflow and partial monitoring of inflows of petroleum products at depots where SML installed flowmeters.

The report also noted that SML conducted six levels of reconciliation, further enhancing the monitoring process.

These findings were disclosed in a press statement issued on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 by the Communications Director of the Presidency, Eugene Arhin.

However, the report also recommended a review of the contract for downstream petroleum audit services, particularly focusing on the fee structure.

This suggests that while the contract has resulted in significant improvements in revenue generation, there are aspects that require further scrutiny and adjustments to ensure fairness and efficiency.

“There is a clear need for the downstream petroleum audit services provided by SML. GRA and the State have benefited from these services since SML commenced providing them. There has been an increase in volumes of 1.7 billion litres and an increase in tax revenue to the State of GHS 2.45 billion. KPMG also observed that there were qualitative benefits, including a 24/7 electronic real-time monitoring of outflow and partial monitoring of inflows of petroleum products at depots where SML had installed flowmeters and six levels of reconciliation done by SML.”

“This minimises the occurrence of under-declarations.However, it is important to review the contract for downstream petroleum audit services, particularly the fee structure. Given the experience and proficiency of SML over the last four years of providing this service, the President has directed that the fee structure be changed from a variable to a fixed fee structure. Other provisions of the contract worth reviewing include clauses on intellectual property rights, termination, and service delivery expectations.”

On January 2, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned KPMG to investigate the contract between SML and GRA, prompted by an exposé by the Fourth Estate.

President Akufo-Addo has since received the KPMG audit report regarding the revenue mobilisation contract between GRA and SML.

The report was delivered to him on Wednesday, March 27, as announced in a Facebook post by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, on Wednesday, April 3.

Importation Of Cocoa Started Over 20 years Ago, Ignore False Claims– COCOBOD

0

Joseph Boahen Aidoo

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has clarified that all cocoa processing companies established in Ghana after November 2001 are legally allowed to import cocoa beans for processing within the country.

This statement comes in response to a misrepresentation on social media regarding the circulation of an official letter granting Afrotropic Cocoa Processing Company Limited permission to import cocoa beans for processing.

In its official statement issued February 4, 2024, COCOBOD called on the public to disregard the false claim derived from the leaked letter, emphasizing that the practice of importing cocoa beans is intended to assist companies in meeting their desired recipes for chocolate production and other purposes.

Regarding the leaked letter, COCOBOD expressed concern over misinterpretation on social media platforms and subsequent dissemination of misinformation. The board cleared the air, stating that all post-November 2001 cocoa processing companies in Ghana have the legal right to import cocoa beans for processing within the country.

The statement also shed light on the industry’s long-standing practice of blending Ghana’s premium cocoa with beans from other producing countries.

Ghana’s cocoa is known for its exceptional quality, and the importation of cocoa beans allows factories to manage costs and implement operational strategies effectively.

This practice, which has been in place for over 20 years, has enabled companies to import cocoa from countries such as Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Nigeria, and Ecuador.

COCOBOD reiterated its commitment to ensuring the sustainability and growth of the cocoa industry in Ghana.

The board continues to explore innovative approaches to support cocoa processing companies, enabling them to maintain high standards and meet the demands of the chocolate market.

Signs your girlfriend is about to leave you

0

Couple

Before a relationship officially ends, it usually ends emotionally before it does physically.

When your girlfriend has reached that emotional checkout stage, she’s likely to do these things:

She no longer argues with you: When a woman cares about you she will argue about certain decisions you take, this isn’t to be rebellious but to show that she cares.

If suddenly she’s not bothered about the things you do or the decisions you take, it’s likely that she’s about to bounce on you.

She barely communicates with you: she’s always busy with one thing or the other.

Your calls are never answered or returned and if they are the attitude is usually unenthusiastic.

She would rather hang out with her friends: at first, she used to make time for you, but now she has new friends and prefers spending time with them.

Suddenly you are no longer a priority, and your plans with her get canceled frequently just to hang out with these ‘friends’

You see the new selfies on her timeline: she used to send selfies to you anytime she took them, and now you’ve been demoted to the ‘status viewer’.

You see the pictures as when she posts them you don’t get the special treatments anymore.

The energy has changed: There’s no enthusiasm anymore, she’s not happy to see you when you give her a surprise visit.

If the things you did that made her happy now annoy her. Just know that your days are numbered in the relationship.

If you are noticing all these signs in your relationship maybe it’s time to sit down and have a heart-to-heart conversation with your partner.

If you can save the relationship then do your best to save it, but if it’s beyond repair it’s better to let go and move on.

Not all relationships are meant to last, some are meant to teach us lessons to become better people to our future partners.

US$5bn Local Honey Industry At Risk |

0

Climate change, environmental issues and the heavy use of agrochemicals are threatening the survival of the almost US$5billion domestic honey production sector, the Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana (CAG) has disclosed.

CAG’s Chief Executive Officer, Anthony Selorm Morrison, speaking to the B&FT on the dwindling fortunes of the industry, said honey production booms on organic agroecology systems where bees thrive in a more natural environment than chemically polluted conditions.

The ever-increasing reliance on the use of chemicals, most of which are harmful to the survival of bees, according to Mr. Morrison, has become a bane to the sector.

Data from CAG indicates the country currently produces a little over US$168million worth of honey annually, but that could skyrocket to more than US$5billion if the right strategies are adopted and quality of the commodity given priority.

China, the second largest global exporter of honey, made some US$260million from the commodity in 2021. Interestingly, that country also leads 90 percent of global fake honey production as its honey products do not constitute even 30 percent of natural honey.

But CAG maintained that Ghana has a more conducive and agroecological advantage to derive more from honey than China if the right strategies are adopted to increase production.

“CAG has mango farms, cocoa farms, cashew farms, orange farms piloted for honey production; but the increasing challenge of disease control through chemicals have made it difficult to keep up with the global demand,” he added.

In Europe, pollination is mostly done by companies which provide such services with bees and charge fees. In Ghana and Africa, however, pollination is done naturally by bees in the wild without a cost. This, according to CAG, offers huge opportunities for Ghana to increase production.

“We can only appeal to the Environmental Protection Agency to control and further scrutinise the type of chemicals that are being imported for agriculture purposes. Some of the chemicals are not friendly toward honey production,” the Chamber’s CEO lamented.

Proposed strategies by CAG to increase production

The Chamber argued that secondary schools can be resourced to develop at least 10 acre cashew, orange, or coconut farms, as these crops are ideal because they are not heavily disease-induced compared to cocoa and mango, among others.

About 200 secondary schools, CAG noted, can undertake this initiative on the 10-acre plantation and by the time the farm is around three years, beehives can be placed on such farms. In five years, he said, more money could be made from the honey produced than from the cash crops.

“Assuming each of 200 secondary schools have 10-acre beehives, and each acre accommodates 10 beehives. That is 20,000 beehives and this initiative alone should generate not less than US$ 1.5 billion worth of honey annually,” Mr. Morrison indicated.

There are more than 700 secondary schools in Ghana as of 2021 per the GES schools register for 2020.

Standard and quality of Ghana’s honey

The Chamber, in partnership with the livestock division of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), has a laboratory for testing locally produced honey.

CAG is also holding a series of training for honey producers in the Northern, Volta and Oti Regions.

Reasons why sex has decreased in your marriage

0

Socks can drastically improve your sex life [Dailymail]

Now it seems things have slowed down; you’re not getting any action and sometimes it gets disappointing and frustrating. You may have tried all the tricks in the books to get things interesting again in the bedroom but to no avail, and now you feel like your marriage is falling apart.

Hold on, before jumping to conclusions about the state of your marriage, consider these potential reasons for the significant reduction in sexual activity:

1. Phases in a Relationship: Remember that relationships go through various phases. Life is full of ups and downs; it won’t always be a constant stream of happiness or sadness. Embrace the changes that come with time and learn to appreciate each phase of your marriage journey.

2. Increased Responsibilities: When you initially married, your focus was primarily on each other. However, as time goes on, you may have taken on additional responsibilities such as raising children and managing bills. These factors can naturally shift your priorities, making sex less of a central concern.

3. Overfamiliarity: It’s possible that you’ve become so comfortable with each other that the excitement has dwindled. Maintaining an air of mystery can be key to reigniting desire. Allow for anticipation and longing to build by occasionally leaving something to the imagination. Giving each other space can ultimately lead to a renewed sense of attraction.

4. Stress: Consider whether external stressors are affecting your partner’s mood and energy levels. Work-related pressures, life changes, or personal issues can contribute to a decreased interest in sex. Understanding and supporting each other during stressful times can help ease the strain on your intimacy.

If you’re encountering these challenges in your marriage, avoid fixating on the problems. Instead, give yourselves a break and weather the storm together. As time passes, the situation may naturally improve as you both adapt and find ways to reconnect. Remember that a healthy relationship involves navigating through both highs and lows, and your commitment to understanding and supporting each other will be essential in maintaining a strong bond.

We were told he’s busy – National Film Authority reacts to Spike Lee’s comments

0

The National Film Authority say they made an effort to reach American producer Spike Lee when he came to Ghana.

In a press release, the Authority stated that they were excited to reach out, especially since they had been working in the past years to elevate Ghana’s film industry, positioning the country as a film and content destination.

However, the NFA said they were told Spike Lee was busy and would not be able to meet the Authority.

“We have become aware of a circular on the visit of Mr Spike Lee. As excited as we were to hear this news after he landed on air, the Authority’s CEO was on her way to meet Mr Lee to reiterate the positioning when the Authority was informed that his schedule was busy for the evening.”

“Given the circumstances, the Authority relayed a goodwill message from the CEO reiterating Ghana’s welcome and particularly the film industry and expressed our desire to commence a conversation.”

This comes after Spike Lee’s comments on the film industry went viral on Thursday.

Lee in an interview with Asaase radio had said that he had no idea Ghana had a vibrant film industry and was shocked to not have met anyone from the sector.

“I made the point that it was publicised that I was coming and no one approached me from the film office. I would have loved to meet the people in the film industry here [in Ghana].”

Many Ghanaians wondered why the film industry had failed to meet such a huge filmmaker who has broken boundaries and told some of Hollywod’s best stories.

Many filmmakers in Ghana were also taken aback stating that they had no idea Spike Lee had come to Ghana or where he had been.

Director Peter Sedufia who has been at the helm of films like Aloe Vera, Keteke and Sidechic Gang said it is unfortunate filmmakers in Ghana are being criticised after Mr Lee’s statements.

He said no one knew why he was in Ghana or his itinerary for them to interrupt his schedule with unsolicited film industry appointments.

“If Spike Lee wanted to meet the Ghanaian filmmaking Community, he would have mentioned it before coming, then we’d be aware of the invitation to treat. Or, whoever was inviting him would have made that known. He can’t pretend not to know people make films in Ghana.”

“If he was invited on the ticket of the government, then there’s a communication failure somewhere. I cannot single-handedly make my way to Spike Lee to make an appointment to have an entire film industry conversation with him. Where’s my access point?”

Meanwhile, the NFA called on organizers of such trips to inform the necessary agencies to ensure that Ghana takes full advantage of all opportunities for the benefit of all.

NPP has politicised premix fuel distribution – Mahama

0

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has expressed strong disapproval of government’s alleged politicisation of premix fuel distribution.

During his “Building The Ghana We Want” tour and engagement with fisherfolk in Axim, Western Region, the former President addressed the concerns raised by locals who reported difficulties in accessing premix fuel for fishing.

In response, he criticised the ruling government, accusing it of undermining the efforts of artisanal fishers and contributing to the challenges they face.

“When we were in power, we set up the landing beach committee, and at that time, anyone could be a member. The premix was distributed judiciously. But now, fuel diversion and mismanagement of the distribution of premix fuel appear to have reached its peak. The NPP government is politicising the distribution,” he criticised.

Mr Mahama reiterated his commitment to enhancing the fisheries sector and pledged significant reforms if elected in the upcoming general elections.

“I know that by God’s grace, the NDC will win the elections, and I promise to improve the fisheries sector if elected in the 2024 polls. I will give you a sector minister who will perform better,” he said.

Flat tax regime will be introduced if I’m elected President – Bawumia –

0

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says his government will introduce a citizen and business-friendly flat tax regime should he be elected President in the December 7 Presidential election.

Unveiling his vision for Ghana after he was elected the Presidential candidate of the NPP at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, on Wednesday, Dr Bawumia disclosed that his government would impose a flat tax on individuals and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which make up 98% of all enterprises in Ghana, equal to a percentage of their revenue, with suitable exemption ceilings established to safeguard the underprivileged.

“With the new tax regime, the tax return should be able to be completed in minutes! We will also simplify our complicated corporate tax system and VAT regime,” he added.

Dr Bawumia further stated that his government would also scrap the controversial tax on electronic financial transactions, popularly known as e-levy if he’s elected President.

“To move towards a cashless economy, however, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payment. To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will, therefore, be abolished,” he announced.

OSP hands over probe into Cecilia Dapaah’s finances, assets to EOCO

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially transferred the investigation into the financial affairs and assets of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, along with her associates, to the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO).

In a statement issued on Thursday, the OSP stated that no direct and immediate evidence of corruption has been found in the seized funds and frozen bank accounts linked to Ms. Dapaah and her associates after nearly seven months of extensive investigation by it and a parallel inquiry by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States (US).

“The investigation has identified strong indications of suspected money laundering and structuring. While the OSP acknowledges these suspected offences, they do not fall directly within the mandate of the Office. By law, the office cannot investigate, prosecute nor recover proceeds of crime except those that fall within corruption and corruption-related offences as defined under section 79 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959).”

“In compliance with section 3 of Act 959, which mandates the OSP to cooperate and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies, the case has been transferred to EOCO for further investigation,” it stated.

The OSP underscored that in August 2023, the OSP acted by freezing Ms. Dapaah’s bank accounts and confiscating $590,000 and GH¢2.73 million from her residence after news of the theft of a substantial amount of cash in cedis and foreign currencies went viral.

“Until today, the Office has been in court to confirm the frozen bank accounts and confirm the seized monies for longer periods pending the outcome of investigations. A portion of the inquiry was entrusted to the FBI due to allegations suggesting involvement of transfer of funds from the United States,” it added.

NLC lashes out at teacher unions over ‘unmeritorious’ strike –

0

The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, has criticised the ongoing strike by labour unions in the educational sector, branding their actions as ‘unjustified’ and ‘unnecessary.’

Mr. Ofosu asserted that the decision by the unions to go on strike was impulsive, considering that negotiations with the Commission were still underway.

He deemed these actions as lacking merit and being unnecessary, particularly given the ongoing efforts to engage with the disgruntled unions. He expressed concern that strikes were increasingly being misused as a tool by labour unions. He spoke in an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, January 31.

“There was an agreement between the parties involved. You leave the commission and go and declare a strike, and all others have also joined. You have put something across, and you have agreed, why go on strike when your issues have been resolved? Why do you want to be on strike when those issues that have not been resolved are being resolved by your good self?”

“It’s quite an unfortunate situation. It’s like, at the moment, the strike is becoming a tool that is being misused. I fail to find the legs on which they were standing to declare the strike and close all universities. As if they just want to close it for fun. Their strike is unmeritorious, it’s needless,” he said.

He went on to characterise the actions taken by the labor unions as ‘incorrect’ and unlawful.’

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) are currently engaged in a strike, citing the government’s failure to address crucial concerns affecting their members.

Among the grievances raised by the labour unions are the employer’s perceived neglect of their welfare needs, including Tier-2 pension funds, vehicle maintenance allowance, and overtime allowance.

Despite these issues, the National Labour Commission (NLC) is urging the unions to halt their strike actions and resume negotiations.

‘Ghanaians might not want me now, but I will return to buy the country’ – Cheddar vows –

0

Ghanaian entrepreneur and aspiring presidential candidate, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, has sparked controversy with his bold declaration that despite current sentiments, he will eventually amass enough wealth to acquire the nation.

In an interview with TV3, Cheddar said, “If I create a million millionaires and take 10% from each person, I will definitely be richer than the country, so be careful. Ghanaians might not want me today, but when I return, I will be back to buy the country.”

This statement comes amidst his official announcement to run for the presidency under the banner of the New Force political movement.

The revelation and his emergence as the enigmatic ‘Man in the Mask’ have stirred both intrigue and scepticism among the Ghanaian populace.

Even though Cheddar admits his unfamiliarity with politics, he attributes his decision to contest as a presidential hopeful to a compelling inner voice, echoing the guiding force that has shaped many aspects of his life.

Ancient ‘Roman wooden sex toy’ discovered after centuries

0

A wooden object found at a Roman fort on Hadrian’s Wall initially thought to be a sewing tool may have been a 2nd Century sex toy.

Experts say the object, found in a ditch at Vindolanda, may be the earliest example of a wooden phallus found anywhere in the ex-Roman empire.

However, they said they had not ruled out it could have been a good luck symbol or a tool to grind ingredients.

It was first thought to be a darning tool and found with dozens of shoes.

Accessories and other small tools – along with leather off-cuts – were also found with it at the site, near Hexham in Northumberland.

‘Smooth at both ends’

However, experts from Newcastle University and University College Dublin say they now believe the object, which measures about 6.2in (16cm), might have had a more intimate use.

When they analysed it they found both ends were noticeably smoother, indicating repeated use over time.

Dr Rob Collins, a senior lecturer in archaeology at Newcastle University, said: “We know that the ancient Romans and Greeks used sexual implements – this object from Vindolanda could be an example of one.”

Phalli were commonplace in the Roman Empire as they were believed to offer protection against bad luck.

Many are depicted in art, carved into pottery or small versions – made of bone or metal – were often worn as jewellery pendants.

The archaeologists said another possibility was the object was used as a pestle to grind ingredients for cosmetics or medicines, and its shape could have been thought to add perceived magical properties.

Or it could have been slotted into a statue and then rubbed for good luck, they wrote in the journal Antiquity.

Barbara Birley, curator at the Vindolanda Trust, where the object is now on display, said: “The wooden phallus may well be currently unique in its survi from this time, but it is unlikely to have been the only one of its kind used at the site, along the frontier, or indeed in Roman Britain.”

We Are Not Being Ruled By Military – Bridget Otoo On Ashaiman Attacks |

0

Outspoken Ghanaian media personality Bridget Otoo has condemned the military for unwarrantedly attacking residents of Ashaiman following the murder of a military person last Saturday.

The reprisal attack has forced the township in a self-imposed curfew to save themselves from the rage of the military. Viral videos on social media have scenes of some men in military uniforms brutalising some of the residents.

That’s not all, the military invaded the community with an armoured bus and helicopter which was seen flying over the township.

The videos showing the brutalities happening at the Ashaiman have received wide condemnation from the public and a clearly upset Bridget Otoo will have none of it.

In a series of tweet earlier today, Bridget called out the actions of the military stating emphatically that the men in uniform should know better that the country was not under military dictatorship.

“Forget Ashaiman for a second and insert East Legon. A soldier is killed there & as a result the military goes to East Legon and assault residents of East Legon.

“It’s Ashaiman so you think they deserve it. We are not being ruled by Military. Or Police no longer investigate crime (sic)?” she stated.

She added that until appropriate measures were taken to stop them, individuals like herself would speak out about such ills that authorities continue to turn a blind eye on.

“We will defend our country. We are not cowards like you. Keep sucking up to them. The country isn’t for the military and sure as hell wasn’t built by them.”

‘A’Court Didn’t Give Fair Hearing’ — Mutfwang Asks Supreme Court To Void Sack

0

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau State, has stated he was not given a fair hearing at the Court of Appeal before his election was nullified.

Last year, March 20, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the governorship election in Plateau, having scored 525,299 votes, while Nentawe Yilwatda, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), got 481,370 votes.

Not satisfied with the results, Yilwatda and the APC filed a petition challenging the outcome of the election at the tribunal.

But the petition was trashed by the tribunal.

However, in November 2023, a three-member panel of the Appellate Court led by Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu held that Mutfwang was not validly sponsored by the PDP for the election.

Mutfwang then filed an appeal before the apex court.

At the hearing session on Thursday, Mutfwang said the dismissal of the seven issues he raised at the court of appeal was against the directive of the Supreme Court that intermediate courts should pronounce on all issues placed before it.

READ ALSO: Plateau: “Gov. Mutfwang’s Sack Might Escalate To Full-Blown Crisis” — PDP To CJN Ariwoola

“Eight issues were distilled and placed before the court below for determination. Unfortunately, only one issue (of jurisdiction) was determined by the court below leaving untouched seven issues,” he said.

“This court has stated in quite a number of cases that intermediate courts should pronounce on all issues placed before it. It should not restrict it to one or more issues which its opinion may dispose of the matter.

“This is to give the apex court the benefit of their views in the matter should there be need to consider other issues not determined by the intermediate court.

“It is our further submission that having denied fair hearing to the appellant, with respect to the notice of preliminary objection as well as a motion to strike out the incompetent grounds of appeal, the decision of the lower court to dismiss same is, with all due respect manifestly flawed,” he added.

He prayed the court to overturn the judgment of the lower court and affirm his election as State Governor.

£64m Man Utd and Arsenal striker target ‘prefers’ different move –

0

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee would ‘prefer’ to stay in Serie A and is open to joining Milan, with the Rossoneri set to make an opening bid for the Arsenal and Manchester United target, reports in Italy claim.

Zirkzee is enjoying a fine season with Bologna, registering ten goals and four assists in 28 Serie A games so far. The Rossoblu, who are managed by former Barcelona and Inter midfielder Thiago Motta, are on course to secure Champions League qualification for the first time in the club’s history.

90min revealed in January that the Dutchman’s performances hadn’t gone unnoticed among Europe’s elite, with Arsenal and United among the clubs monitoring his development.

However, Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport report Milan have made Zirkzee their top striker target and are ready to offer €50m (£43m) plus Alexis Saelemaekers, who is currently on loan at Bologna, in order to attain him.

Bologna will hold out for a higher fee and are already looking at the €75m (£64m) paid up front by United to sign Rasmus Hojlund from fellow Serie A side Atalanta last summer as a comparable yardstick.

Bologna believe Zirkzee is worth as much as Hojlund / Robbie Jay Barratt – AMA/GettyImages

Though Zirkzee would gladly head to San Siro, Milan do not want to pay that high a price for a new young forward, particularly given they paid a similarly substantial sum to sign Charles De Ketelaere in 2022.

Bayern Munich, where Zirkzee came through the academy and made 17 senior appearances before his 2022 sale to Bologna, are also considering signing the striker, but he has ‘no great intention’ to return to the Allianz Arena, where he would play second-fiddle to Harry Kane.

Gazzetta do, however, add Arsenal and United remain in the race and point out the riches of Premier League clubs could make Milan’s task of signing Zirkzee that much more difficult if Bologna essentially made it an auction.

In a harrowing incident that shook pedestrians on the Winneba to Kasoa Highway, a police officer tragically lost his life during night duty at a police checkpoint situated at Kantanka Junction in the Central Region.

The incident transpired on Friday, June 21, 2024, around 11 PM, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to reports collated by GHOne News, the fatal accident involved three vehicles – a Kia Truck bearing registration number GR-6419-N, a trailer identified by registration plate GE-5468-22, and a fuel tanker tagged GY-2186-13.

The calamity unfolded as the over-speeding Kia Truck, en route to Mankessim Road, collided with the police checkpoint barricade, subsequently ramming into both the stationary trailer and fuel tanker parked along the thoroughfare, ultimately leading to the tragic demise of the dedicated police officer who was working diligently at the checkpoint.

It was posited that the driver of the Kia Truck had succumbed to sleep while behind the wheel, precipitating the chain of events that culminated in the fatal accident.

Three individuals aboard the vehicles involved in the collision sustained injuries during the impact and were promptly rushed for medical attention at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment for their wounds.

Your resignation is pointless – Mahama tells outgone Trade and Agric ministers

0

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has criticised the resignation of some ministers to focus on their political ambitions.

This follows the resignation of both Trade and Agric ministers, Alan Kyerematen and Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto to pursue their presidential aspirations.

In a tweet on Friday, he described their resignation as ‘pointless’, adding that it is ‘too late’.

According to him, the outgone ministers “have realized their boat is heading for disaster hence their decision to leave.

“Some members of the Akufo-Addo government have realized their boat is heading for disaster. It must be a relief for those deserting the ship, but it’s so late. It’s almost pointless. They’ll try hard not to be part of the mess we are in, but let’s not forget the parts they all played,” he posted.

It would be recalled that on Friday, January 6, 2023, former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen tendered his resignation to President Akufo-Addo.

A few days afterward, he addressed the press to officially announce his intention to contest the NPP’s flagbearership race.

According to him, he will pick the form when nominations are opened by the party.

“I wish to use this platform to formally announce my decision to contest the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party when the Party officially opens nominations for that purpose,” he said.

Also, the outgone, Agric Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto followed suit. In an interview with JoyNews presidential correspondent, Elton Brobbey, he stated that he will contest for the NPP’s flagbearership position.

NCCE engages St. Catherine SHS Students on Limited Voter Registration exercise

0

By Kekeli K. Blamey, GNA

Agbakope (V/R), May. 14, GNA – Mr. Seth Fiagorme, the Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the South Tongu District, has engaged students of St. Catherine Senior High School on the ongoing limited voter registration exercise in the country.

The event took place at the school’s auditorium in Agbakope, where Mr. Fiagorme seized the opportunity to urge students to utilize the four-day break granted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to register for their voter ID cards.

Addressing the students, Mr. Fiagorme emphasized the importance of civic participation and highlighted that the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, which commenced on May 7, 2024, would span 21 days, providing ample time for eligible citizens to register.

He mentioned that the four-day break would empower students aged 18 and above to exercise their democratic rights to vote.

Mr. Fiagorme elucidated the logistics of the registration process, noting that the registration centres would be set up not only at the district office but also in two remote communities within the South Tongu District.

He advised students to come prepared with either a Ghana card or two guarantors to facilitate the registration process smoothly.

The NCCE Director also distributed copies of the 1992 constitution to the students and urged them to delve into its contents regularly to understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens and actively safeguard the democratic principles enshrined within.

Some of the students told the Ghana News Agency that they would strictly adhere to procedures to get themselves registered by the Electoral Commission to vote in the upcoming general elections.

I don’t think government has done enough for the creative arts sector – Samini

0

Musician Samini has said that the governing New Patriotic Party has not put enough effort into helping the creative arts sector.

Speaking in an interview on HitZ FM, Samini said that industry players had been waiting on the government to fulfil its promise adding that the projects that are being done are also not close to completion.

“I saw on UTV the other day when Socrates was talking, he tried to give references to certain construction sites to say that these are theatres and stuff that are being built, and we have a year and a half to go…So if these things are under construction on the very foundation level, then I don’t know how to, you know, mark it until maybe the one and a half years is over.”

“But really judging from where I sit, I don’t think enough has been put towards our sector as against what was said. I wouldn’t say there is enough.

“There’s always room for more given how long we’ve been waiting for things to happen, and what we expect to happen, as against how much promises were made and then comparing that to what is being done on the ground now,” Samini said.

As someone who campaigned for the NPP ahead of the 2020 general elections, he stated that he was disappointed with the effort so far.

Samini stated that this is because the promises the government made to the creative arts industry encouraged him to believe in President Akufo-Addo’s vision and campaign for the party.

“Things like these, among other things like free SHS, one district, one factory, one district, one dam…I was more interested in the factories because I come from the North and the numbers that we have over there, if you have factories that can employ people, 2000 people working day and night, making a living out of it.”

“We have different sectors that need factories. So these things attracted some of us to go and say, ‘let’s have some sort of continuity rather than distortion to retrogress’. And I guess the blueprint is there for everyone to judge,” he said.

Adongo slams Ofori-Atta’s defense of BoG loss, says Addison must be held accountable

0

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, has slammed Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s criticism of attacks on the leadership of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) over the bank’s GH¢60 billion loss.

Adongo said Ofori-Atta’s comments are “unfortunate and sad” and that they ignore the fact that the BoG is required to report on its comprehensive income statement, which reveals profit or loss.

“Non-governmental organisations that are not profit-making don’t report comprehensive income statements and they don’t disclose profits or losses. They disclose deficits or surpluses. Is Ken Ofori-Atta aware that because of its special mandate and its need to make a profit or loss that is why the international financial standards require such entities to report comprehensive income statements revealing profit or loss?” Adongo said.

Adongo argued that the BoG must be held accountable for its losses, just like any other public institution. He said the minority caucus in Parliament is right to demand answers from the BoG leadership.

“We need to know what happened to the money that was lost. We need to know why the BoG was unable to manage its finances effectively. We need to know what steps are being taken to prevent such losses from happening again,” Adongo said.

The BoG has defended its performance, saying that the loss was due to a number of factors, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the Domestic Debt Exchange. The BoG has also said that it is taking steps to improve its financial management.

However, Adongo and other critics of the BoG are not convinced. They argue that the BoG’s losses are a sign of mismanagement and that the central bank needs to be held accountable.

Mr Ofori-Atta in an article emphasised that the primary objective of the Bank of Ghana, like all central banks, is not to generate profit.

In the article titled “Standing Strong With The Bank of Ghana,” the Finance Minister addressed the importance of managing the central bank as a financially sustainable institution, rather than focusing solely on profitability.

The article comes in response to plans by the minority caucus of parliament to protest against Dr. Addison, accusing him of mismanaging the central bank, resulting in a loss of GHS60.8 billion in 2022 and negative equity of GHS55.1 billion.

Cedi depreciation shot up cement prices – COCMAG –

0

The Chamber of Cement Manufacturers (COCMAG) has justified the recent price hikes in cement products.

According to the chamber, the increase in the prices is largely as a result of the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar and rising cost of production.

This comes after the Minister for Trade and Industry, K. T. Hammond, addressed the recent surge in cement prices by directing the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee (CMDC) to intervene immediately.

The Minister called for cement manufacturers in Ghana to reverse the recent price hikes immediately.

But in a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers (COCMAG), Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah, the chamber explained that, the cement industry relies on importing raw materials priced in foreign currencies, particularly the dollar which has increased costs.

“Additionally, some tariffs, levies, and taxes imposed by other authorities such as the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority are also dollar-denominated, further exacerbating expenses,” a part of the press release said.

COCMAG stated that, in order to ensure operational viability and product quality, it is necessary to adjust the prices of cement.

According to the chamber, although the new prices may affect consumers, there is a need to “partially offset increased manufacturing costs due to currency devaluation and other uncontrollable factors.”

The Chamber assured its costumers of providing quality cement at fair prices but acknowledged the potential for increase in prices of cement products.

It noted that once economic conditions stabilise, cement prices will normalise.

“Acknowledging the understanding and support of all stakeholders, the Chamber reaffirms its dedication to Ghana’s construction sector development amidst these challenges.”

‘I Leave You To God’ – Prophet Nigel Gaisie Blasts Kennedy Agyapong Over His Wild Allegations Against Him |

Founder and leader of the Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie says he is very embittered by some accusations that the Member of Parliament of Assin Central constituency, Kennedy Agyapong made concerning him using his Net 2 TV platform.

It could be recalled that Hon. Kennedy Agyapong serialized what would be his exposé about the behavior and activities of Prophet Nigel Gaisie, calling him a fake man of God.

Reacting on this Saturday’s United on UTV, the Prophet talked about how the allegations affected him and his family.

According to him, the allegations, which he stated categorically are false, took an emotional toll on him and his family.

He sarcasticallly wished Hon. Kennedy Agyapong’s son not to experience a situation where wild allegations are made about him and also prayed he never experienced the trauma that his father caused him with his allegations.

To Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Prophet Nigel Gaisie replied; “I leave him to God” and stressed God will vindicate him.

NPP’s Kofi Asante Defects To NDC

0

NDC MP, Eric Afful and Kofi Asante

The 2020 Amenfi West Parliamentary Candidate for NPP in the Western Region, Abraham Kofi Asante, has defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) under the current regime, was once a member of the NDC and later detected to the NPP.

However, at the funeral of the late mother of the NDC Member of Parliament for area, Eric Afful over the weekend at Asankragwaa, Kofi Asante was seen having an NDC mofler around his neck and later made it known to the gathering that he has defected to the opposition NDC.

Confirming the story, the Wassa Amenfi West constituency NPP Organizer, Abraham Lincoln described what Kofi Asante has done as political ‘prostitution’.

He said Asante was once an NDC member who became a District Chief Executive (DCE) in the area in the 1990s and was elected as the people’s representative in the country’s legislative assembly from 1997 until he resigned from parliament in 2003 citing personal reasons.

He noted that Asante was appointed GIFEC CEO by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his first term before Kofi Asante contested for the Parliamentary seat in Wassa Amenfi West on the ticket of NPP and lost to NDC’s Eric Afful, the incumbent MP.

He pointed out that Asante’s latest defection has left many in the constituency describing him as an ‘unfaithful politician’ who need not to be paid attention.

“Maybe, Samuel Atta Mills was part of the evil conspiracy against Atta Mills” – Anyidoho –

0

Founder and President of the Atta Mills Institute, Samuel Koku Anyidoho has stated that there is the possibility that the Vice Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Samuel Atta Mills, may have been involved in a sinister plot that lead to Atta Mills’ death.

It is not clear what inspired his the allegation but he took to X to write, “Maybe, he was part of the evil conspiracy for “nature to scheme” for his brother President Atta-Mills to “give way”. Judas Judas Judas.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Anyidoho heightened his scathing attack on the NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama on Friday.

In a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, he said the former President is ‘power drunk’.

This is his reaction to Mahama’s comments during a rally in the Ashanti Region where he said the party is not going to beg to join their course.

In his engagement with a huge crowd, John Dramani Mahama said the NDC train has already taken off and won’t pay attention to critics who expect to have their backside wiped.

Reacting to the comments, Samuel Koku Anyidoho said John Mahama should focus on cleaning his backside before talking about others.

“You too, nobody go clean your stinky nyash.

“You are not more human than anyone oooo!!! Clean your nyash first before thinking about the nyash of others,” the former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC said.

Ato Forson’s trial: Finance Ministry’s letter to BoG not application for LC

0

A banking and finance specialist, Alexander Kofi Mensah Mould, has told an Accra Economic and Financial Court that a letter signed by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson requesting for letters of credit to be established by the Bank of Ghana in favour of Big Sea Trading LLC of Dubai, is not an application for an LC.

Alexander Kofi Mensah Mould who testified on Thursday in a case of causing financial loss to the state brought against Dr Forson, who doubles as Minority Leader in Parliament, explained under cross-examination by the Attorney General, Godfred Dame, that whereas the Ministry of Finance needed to write to the BoG requesting for LCs to be established, that letter alone cannot trigger the establishment of an LC unless there is a proper application from the MDA for whom the LC is to be established.

The former Chief Executive Officer of the GNPC, had told the Court during cross-examination at the last sitting that, letters signed on behalf of the Finance Minister by Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, requesting for the establishment of letters of credit in favour of Big Sea General Trading LLC of Dubai, was only a first step in the process of establishing of the LCs and cannot constitute payment.

Mr Mould added that there was no way the Bank of Ghana or any other bank would set up an LC on the basis of the letters written by Dr Forson.

He further explained that the only document required in the establishment of such an LC would be the application forms filled by the applicant for the LC which in this case was the Ministry of Health.

The witness who has extensive experience in Trade Finance and the establishment of LCs due to his many years of work at the Union Bank of Switzerland and Standard Chattered Bank in the United States of America, further stated that LCs in themselves were not payment and that they constituted a guarantee of payment upon the occurrence of a very specific event.

Mr Mould stressed that his review of the documents presented in evidence by the prosecution showed that it was “fallacious” to allege that by merely signing a letter on behalf of the Minister of Finance requesting for the establishment of an LC in favour of Big Sea, Dr Forson had caused financial loss.

The witness also indicated, that based on his knowledge of Ghana’s financial management laws, only the Finance Minister could authorise a request for the establishment of the letters of credit in question.

He said it was not unusual for Deputy Ministers to sign letters on behalf of their Ministers.

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has been accused of causing financial loss to the state for allegedly causing an LC to be established in favour of Big Sea for the supply of 30 ambulances without authorisation.

Vote out MPs supporting LGBTQ+ community – Charles Owusu –

0

Charles Owusu, a member of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) is urging Ghanaians to oppose Members of Parliament(MPs) who express support for the LGBTQ+ community.

The former head of the Monitoring Unit at the Forestry Commission believes that voting out such MPs will deter them from discussing the matter further.

He is advocating for a campaign against those who favor LGBTQ+ rights, cautioning that their stance could potentially have negative consequences for society.

During an interview on Adom FM, Mr. Owusu asserted that it is irrational to believe that individuals would willingly choose to be gay or lesbian.

He encouraged people to vote against anyone endorsing such views.

He specifically criticized Ursula’s remarks on the criminalization of sex toys, expressing concern about the potential societal impact and stating that Ghana should not allow anyone to disrupt its social fabric.

Mr. Owusu argued that even animals adhere to a natural order and do not engage in same-sex relationships.

According to him, being gay or lesbian is a deliberate choice, and he emphasized that Ghana would not tolerate such behavior.

Similarly, Yaw Adomako Baafi, a former Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), shared comparable sentiments. He expressed worry about the rapid proliferation of LGBTQ+ issues and called for prompt action. Baafi stressed the importance of addressing the matter objectively, without succumbing to propaganda and emotions.

The controversial LGBT bill, a private member’s bill presented to Speaker Alban Bagbin on June 29, 2021, is spearheaded by eight MPs. The proponents aim to criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality in the country.

0

Four people are said to have been slain by suspected gunmen on Friday, May 10, in the Mbachon and Mbagbe towns in Turan, Yaav Council Ward, Kwande local government area, Benue state.

Kwande is in Benue’s North East Senatorial Zone, and the two impacted communities are also close to the Taraba-Benue boundary.

The event occurred at 5 p.m., just as individuals were settling into their respective compounds.

“They stormed the two communities at about 5pm and opened fire on people, when the dust was down four persons were shot and killed,” according to Lawrence Akerigba, a member of the community.

Lawrence Akerigba informed The Nation that one of the victims had been evacuated for burial, three people were missing, and another had been taken away.

Kwande Local Government Area borders Taraba State and has been subjected to herdsmen assaults over the past 15 years.

He said: “In Moon district, Kwande Local Government area, the people have had no access to their land for 16 years as it has been completely overrun by herdsmen who have turned it into grazing for their animals.”

Lawrence Akerigba said further: “The killings are happening now that farming activities have resumed, saying if nothing was done, it will disrupt farming activities now that rains have set in and appealed to security agencies to protect harmless farmers to return to their farm business so that hunger will not kill them.”

When contacted, the Benue Police Command stated that they had yet to receive the complaint of the killings.

NDC gives government 30 days to compensate victims of Ayawaso West Wuogon violence or…

0

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the government “to pay fair and adequate compensation to all injured victims of the Ayawaso West Wuogon violence”.

Should the government fail to abide by the demand, the NDC says it “will collaborate with the affected persons and take all necessary steps to seek appropriate compensation for them.”

The demand is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the party and signed by its General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey on the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the bloody turnout of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

According to the NDC, it is “appalled by the blatant refusal of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government to implement the recommendations of the Emile Short Commission” and government’s own white paper on the matter.

“Even more bizarre and sad, is the blatant refusal of the Attorney-General, Mr. Godfred Dame to discuss the modalities for the payment of compensation to the victims, as recommended by the Emile Short Commission.”

“It is shameful to say the least, that till date, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government has not deemed it necessary to prosecute the perpetrators of the Ayawaso by-election violence.

The NDC said it stands with all victims of the violence and assured them of the party’s unflinching commitment to punish the perpetrators and seek true justice for them should the party assume the reins of government in 2025.

“I work in Accra. I had closed from work and was on my way home. I normally use the GIJ [Ghana Institute of Journalism] route towards the Flagstaff house [Jubilee House]. Around 9pm that faithful evening, I was on my way home as usual”.

He said he was following another car when he got to the junction and when the other car initiated the left turn, he also followed and turned left.

“When I got to the Absa club house junction which is a T-junction. The MP’s [vehicle] was coming from the SDA church [side], and I was making a left turn to join the Independence Avenue road. He said the MP was rushed out of the scene, “I became a bit unconscious for a while, I struggled before I was able to come out. Within a few minutes, I heard voices that was how I regained consciousness. By the time I was up, I was told he [MP] had been rushed out of the scene”.

The MP is reported to have suffered a cut on his forehead and was first taken to Parliament to vote before he was taken to hospital for further  checks.

NCCE applauds Parliament, urges President to assent to Death Penalty Bill

0

By Isaac Arkoh

Cape Coast, July 30, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has highly praised Parliament for voting to amend the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2022 to outlaw the death penalty from Ghana’s statutory books.

Accordingly, it has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to quickly assent the Bill to bring emotional and psychological relief to prisoners on the death toll.

Mr Robert Ewur, the Central Regional Director of the Commission, wondered why humanity wanted revenge with the statute to take away people’s fundamental right to life.

He told the Ghana News Agency, the bold verdict by Parliament was a feather in the cup of Ghana’s democratic inroads towards upholding the rights of all people.

Ghana’s Parliament on Tuesday, passed the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill 2022, sponsored by Mr. Francis Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina.

The Private Members’ Bill required to amend the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) to substitute the penalty of life imprisonment for death and related matters.

The death penalty in Ghana was a legally approved execution of individuals found guilty of definite crimes for murder, attempt to commit murder, genocide, or piracy, and smuggling of gold and diamond.

The passage of the Bill amendment, Mr. Ewur said, should be a springboard for Members of Parliament to take steps to improve on the oversight and scrutinise responsibilities of the House devoid of partisan consideration.

“The MPs owe it a duty to the good people of Ghana to pass policies that will at the end of the day make a positive impact on society and not partisan politics.

“They should be reminded at all times to instil patriotism and engender public confidence in them for accelerated development,” he stated.

The Bill, he said, renewed calls for constitutional review, and sentencing regime in the country’s Criminal Justice System to reflect the changing global dynamics and technological advancements.

He urged judges to prioritize the option of non-custodial sentencing that exists under the 1992 Constitution rather than giving custodial sentences to convicts, particularly, petty offenders.

The options of non-custodial sentences would decongest the prisons populated by remand prisoners, help in the proper rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society to bring meaning to life.

Non-custodial sentences that exist under the country’s current legal regime include fines and bonds.

Other non-custodial sentence options such as parole and community service, however, are not yet options for judges under the Constitution.

Mr. Ewur called for support to reinforce a collective sense of civic responsibility, nation-building, and democratic governance among the citizenry.

He also prevailed on the citizenry to work hard to consolidate the country’s democracy, saying: “The Constitution is a living document and must be nurtured to grow.

“The nurturing of a living constitution is vital for the sustenance of Ghana’s democracy and the promotion of sustainable development.”

Mohbad’s Toxicology Result Ready As Pathologist Begins Evaluation

0

The toxicology test conducted to identify the cause of death for late music sensation Ilerioluwa Aloba nicknamed Mohbad has been completed.

According to PUNCH Online, the test was conducted in the United States.

Lagos State Counsel, Oluwaseun Akinde, acknowledged this to the coroner’s court sitting in the Ikorodu area of the state in November 2023, saying the autopsy into the deceased’s external body was done, but the toxicological test was for the internal body.

However, an official of the state government who is familiar with the case stated on Thursday that the test result was sent to the state DNA and Forensic Centre last week.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to comment on the topic, added that the test results were delivered to the police earlier this week.

“The toxicology test is ready and given to the police. We projected 10 weeks from the outset but it came in before then. The laboratory that would have done the job was burnt down during #EndSARS protest.

“So the sample has to be taken abroad and now that it has been brought back, it is for the police to proceed with their investigation and charge people who needed to be charged to court and call on the government to prosecute, but as it is, I think the Lagos State government has done what it should do, the ball is now in their court,” the official disclosed.

The result was received, according to a source in the Lagos State Police Command who also spoke on the condition of anonymity since he was not allowed to speak to the media.

The source said, “The toxicology report is with us. It arrived on Monday but it is medical jargon for us. We don’t understand what it is. Even you will never understand what it is. So, it has been sent to the pathologists who carried out the autopsy to interpret it in layman’s terms. Once the interpretation is out, it will be announced through the office of the PPRO.”

Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, could not be reached since phone calls to his number were not answered. As of the filing of the report, he had not responded to a text message addressed to him.

Richard Somiari, Director of the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, stated on March 20 that the toxicological results would be ready within the following three to four weeks.

Somiari, while testifying during a coroner’s inquest into the death of the singer said, “We expected to get the first set of autopsy results in three to four weeks and re-confirm to authenticate the cause of the death.

“We searched for multiple possibilities, to check if poison was involved in the death of Mohbad since no actual cause was mentioned,” he said.

“I’ve been around people, that I tried to let them say who I am but they didn’t appreciate it.

“As an artiste, if you come to somewhere, if you’re humble, they will take you for granted. But if you have ego, they feel like you’re not accessible so they will like you more.

I Was The Shadow, The Plan B – I Was Bred To Offer Spare Organs To Heir William – Says Prince Harry |

0

Prince Harry has said he believes he was only bred to offer spare parts for his brother in case the UK heir apparent ever needed new organs.

“Two years older than me, Willy was the Heir, whereas I was the Spare,” the exiled prince wrote in explaining the title of his memoir, “Spare,” which was officially released Tuesday, January 10.

“I was the shadow, the support, the Plan B. I was brought into the world in case something happened to Willy,” he wrote of his 40-year-old brother and current heir to the throne, William.

He said he understood his role was to be a “diversion” and “distraction” from his brother — or to provide, “if necessary, a spare part” to him.

“Kidney, perhaps. Blood transfusion. Speck of bone marrow,” he added in detail.

He also said his dad, now King Charles III, could never be on a plane with his elder son, William, “because there must be no chance of the first and second in line to the throne being wiped out.”

“But no one gave a damn whom I traveled with; the Spare could always be spared,” Harry claimed.

“This was all made explicitly clear to me from the start of life’s journey and regularly reinforced thereafter,” he claimed.

Harry complained that the heir and spare clarification “wasn’t merely how the press referred to us,” but was also “the shorthand used by” his royal family, including “Mummy,” the late Princess Diana, “and even Granny,” the since-deceased Queen Elizabeth II.

Harry says he was 20 when he was first told that his dad had greeted his birth by quipping: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me a Heir and a Spare — my work is done.”

“A joke. Presumably,” Harry wrote,  claiming that “minutes after delivering this bit of comedy, his dad went off to meet with his girlfriend, Camilla, now Queen Consort.

Despite naming his memoir “Spare” —  Harry maintains that he was initially accepting of not being the main center of focus as Williams was.

“I took no offense, I felt nothing about it, any of it,” he wrote — initially acknowledging his incredibly privileged life.

“Every boy and girl, at least once, imagines themselves as a prince or a princess. Therefore, Spare or no Spare, it wasn’t half bad to actually be one,” he conceded.

Everton deducted two points for second breach of financial rules –

0

An independent panel has handed Everton a two-point deduction on Monday for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability (PSR) rules, the second time the club has faced a points deduction this season.

Premier League regulations stipulate that a club can lose no more than £105 million ($132.54m) over a three-year period.

“Over a three-day hearing last month, the independent Commission heard evidence and arguments from the club in respect of a range of potential mitigating factors for its admitted breach of £16.6million, including the impact of its two successive PSR charges,” the Premier League said in a statement.

“Having done so, the Commission determined the appropriate sanction to be a two-point deduction, taking effect immediately.”

The points deduction means Everton have dropped one place in the Premier League table to 16th, two points above the relegation zone.

Everton announced in a statement that they plan to appeal the decision and have begun preparations to do so, adding that the club is “extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied.”

Everton have already faced a points deduction this season for a previous PSR breach. The club were initially docked 10-points in November by an independent commission, before having the penalty reduced to six points on appeal.

The Merseyside club were charged for a second breach in January alongside fellow relegation battlers Nottingham Forest, who were deducted four points in March as punishment.

Bawumia Launches CJ’s LEADing Justice Initiatives

0

Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has launched the ‘LEADing Justice Initiatives’ by the Chief Justice, with an assurance that government will continue to invest in court infrastructure, residential accommodation for judges and magistrates, and the general re-tooling of the human resources of the institution to improve justice delivery.

LEADing Justice is an acronym for Law, Ethics, Asset Management, Due Process and Digitalisation which forms the vision of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, as she endeavours to drastically transform justice delivery in Ghana.

It also forms part of a strategic framework to guide decision-making, inform operational planning and delivery, and help measure progress in the achievement of the desired change for efficient and effective justice delivery.

Speaking at the launch of the initiatives at the International Conference Centre in Accra yesterday, the Vice President was hopeful that the initiatives will “herald a new dawn in the history of our judicial system, propelled by efficiency, excellence, knowledge, and integrity.”

Dr. Bawumia said there can be no escaping the fact that the duty of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service is to bring justice closer to the people of Ghana, by employing the tools and strategies that will make it much more comfortable for them to access and utilise instruments of justice.

“The Judiciary is enjoined to do this to ensure that the systems and structures of justice bring meaningful impact to the people for whom they have been designed,” he stated.

It was for this reason that he said he was excited the Chief Justice is leading the third arm of state to make the promise of our nation evident in the lives of people and extend to all, the protection that is theirs by birth.

“I note with great admiration and excitement the new impetus, focus, energy, and dynamism that Her Ladyship has brought to the administration of justice since she took over the reins of office less than a year ago,” the Vice President noted.

“It is this new zeal and sense of urgency that has culminated in the vision that we are launching today which would be the blueprint for her administration, and point the way for the Judiciary and the Judicial Service towards the goal that meets the justice demands of the 21st Century and beyond,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia was particularly enthused about the digitalisation component of the vision, “because we can make major strides in just short periods of time through the digitalisation process.”

He added that, “Having personally launched the Electronic Case Tracking System for the criminal justice sector in 2018, and witnessing the positive changes that the e-justice system which was launched a year later is bringing to the administration of justice, I am particularly delighted that digitalisation is a key component of this strategic vision.”

The Chief Justice indicated that her leadership directions focus on tackling the seemingly systemic difficulties that appear determined to dim the efforts of previous Chief Justices to activate the efficient and effective delivery of justice with various reform initiatives.

Touching on the law component of the LEADing Justice initiatives, she said out of the over 7,000 staff of the Judicial Service who are experts in their own fields, only an insignificant number of them are lawyers, hence, paralegal training would be made available to them and the countless professionals who work with the Judiciary to deliver justice.

On ethics, the Chief Justice hopes to change the tags of corruption, ineptitude and inefficiency “around the neck of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service of Ghana.”

She also disclosed the release of 12 practice directions and administrative guideline manuals to increase transparency and due process in court work.

Assets, due process and digitalisation focus on goals set for capacity building for a well-trained work force, high use of technology, the consistent, assured and well-negotiated support of partners, good housing for all judges and all senior to medium level staff.

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, in a goodwill message underscored the importance of making justice accessible to all, rather than just a few, adding that, “There is a need to address complaints about inefficiency, judges’ attitudes, and delays in case completion.”

President of the Ghana Bar Association, Yaw Acheampong Boafo, on his part suggested that the Judiciary be made to retain all of its internally generated funds for the year to enable it implement its projects.

We need to separate issue of source and stealing – Justice Srem-Sai

0

Cecelia Dapaah

A senior lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration’s (GIMPA) Faculty of Law says the different issues in the case involving the former Sanitation Minister must be separated.

Dr Justice Srem-Sai noted that presently the focus of the police investigation is the theft incident in Cecilia Abena Dapaah’s house but not the source of the money that was stolen.

He emphasised that it is important for Ghanaians to understand that the theft incident and the source of the money were different cases and needed to be separated.

Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday, he said, “At this point what the police are doing is you say that someone owns a property, another person takes it and now we are investigating stealing.

“Let’s not confuse the issues. At this point, the police are investigating stealing against some different people. They are not into the question of where did the complainant get the money from.

“…That’s what I keep saying that we need to separate the issues. At this point, you know the offence of stealing, you actually don’t need to find out who the owner of the money is.”

He noted, however, that the police would only investigate the source of the money when they or another organisation took up the matter and began investigating the minister’s funds.

Dr Srem-Sai stressed that it is imperative for the nation to decide and explicitly indicate whether public officials and politicians would be subjected to extreme criminal standards or to governance.

This, he explained, will make it easier to deal with cases similar to the Cecilia Dapaah saga as well as other purported cases of corruption involving public officers and political leaders when they come to light.

The law lecturer also dared the former Sanitation Minister to disclose to Ghanaians how much was stolen from her.

Dr Justice Srem-Sai said until Cecilia Abena Dapaah does that, she cannot allege inconsistencies in the figures the police have reported.

According to the Managing Partner of Praetorium Solicitors, the police have conducted a thorough investigation into the matter.

“On the scale of who is more likely to be right with regards to the amounts involved, I think the police are more likely to be right because the police have spoken to a number and the extent to which they have gone with this investigation.

“I think every fair-minded person should be able to come to this basis conclusion that it is possible that the police have no information on the tracing of the money and whatever happened more than the complainant herself.”

“In any case, I’ve listened to all the discussions and read all the press releases not for once has the complainant herself come out with how much she thinks she has.

“So if you’re saying what the police is saying is not correct, you need to tell us what or how much was stolen from you. So it is not enough to just say what the police are saying is not correct,” he said.

SSNIT is helpless, Labadi Beach Hotel has been hijacked by ‘political insiders’ – Bright Simons alleges –

0

Bright Simons, a vice president of IMANI Africa, has alleged that some persons in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have hijacked lands belonging to the Labadi Beach Hotel, which is owned by Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

According to him, “political insiders” have encroached on the land of the hotel to the point where only two acres of land is left at the hotel’s beachfront.

In a series of posts shared on X on Friday, November 10, 2023, the IMANI vice president added that one of the invaders is linked to a leader in the NPP.

“Labadi Beach Hotel, built in 1991 by Ghana’s biggest gold mine, is Gh’s most prestigious 5-star beach resort. Since SSNIT, the state pension fund & 100% owner, took over mgmt, political insiders have hijacked the beachfront leaving the hotel with just 2 acres. SSNIT is helpless.

“One of the beachfront encroachments is connected with a ruling party boss,” Bright Simons wrote.

He also said that information he is privy to indicates that a temporal facility which was put up for the Year of Return programme in 2019 has now been turned into a permanent one.

“Labadi Beach Hotel staff say the facility was meant to be a temporary event location for Year of Return. Now, it permanently blocks hotel residents’ view & bellows loud, disturbing, music every weekend,” he added.

Malawi’s President Bans Himself And His Cabinet From Foreign Travel |

0

Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has suspended with immediate effect all international travel for himself and his government in a bid to save money.

The measure follows a huge devaluation of the currency as Malawi secures a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to boost its ailing economy.

Mr Chakwera has also ordered all ministers currently abroad to return home.

Fuel allowances for senior government officials have been cut by 50%.

Malawi’s economy has been undergoing turbulent times, characterised by an acute shortage of petrol and diesel, as well as high inflation.

In a televised address, Mr Chakwera said the measures would remain in place until the end of the financial year in March 2024.

Some similar austerity measures were announced during the Covid-19 pandemic but had limited impact as they were not strictly enforced.

As part of moves to ease the cost-of-living crisis, the president has asked the finance minister to make provisions for a reasonable wage increase for all civil servants in the next budget review.

He has also ordered a lowering of income tax on individuals in the upcoming budget, to help workers whose incomes have lost value.

The IMF has approved a four-year credit facility worth $174m (£140m), just days after Malawi’s central bank announced the devaluation of the kwacha by 44%.

Analysts suggest the devaluation may have been a condition for securing the IMF credit facility.

Some fear the currency devaluation will only raise prices and potentially worsen Malawians financial woes, as happened a decade ago.

Officials have blamed the economic downturn on external factors, such as a devastating cyclone earlier this year and the war in Ukraine.

Mpraeso MP Commends Education Minister | Education

0

The deputy ranking member of the Public Accounts Committee and the Member of Parliament for Mpraeso Constituency, Hon. Davis Ansah Opoku has commended the Education Minister, Hon. Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum for the many policies he’s introduced to change the face of education in the country.

Speaking to Republic Press during a donation he made to support 50 best-performing students in his constituency, the MP indicated that the Education minister’s arrangement towards the school selection and placement system (CSSPS) has been very remarkable and deserves some commendation.

The MP, while speaking on the backdrop of the CSSPS refuted claims that the system has been very dissatisfying and perhaps, coming with a lot of challenges as far as the placement system is concerned.

“I think this year has been a bit different and successful. Lemme use this opportunity to commend the Education Minister, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum. Looking at the arrangement laid down concerning the Computer placement this year, nobody has called me to assist them in facing any challenges. At first, you can hear such issues of people taking money before placement but as we speak, due to the hard work of the Education Minister, Mr. Adutwum, we must commend him for streamlining the activities of CSSPS.

Recently, his office and some media houses did an investigation and unearth some corrupt practices that were going on. If you look at his innovative ideas that have been implemented in the Education sector, we must commend him and the President“, he stated.

The MP, during last year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination, pledged to support some first 50 students who would attain an aggregate of 6 to 15 in their BECE exam. Last year, 50 students were supported. This year, 50 students were selected and supported with ¢500 each.

The MP said this initiative was to motivate school pupils to do well during their exams, knowing very well that if they do excel, the MP will support them.

The National Film Authority partners International Writers Lab

0

The National Film Authority (NFA) has entered into a partnership with the International Writers Lab (IWL) to showcase the Ghana film industry to Hollywood studios and streamers.

The IWL was launched in September 2021 to increase the opportunity for Hollywood production of stories from film and television writers in Africa, beginning in Kenya.

Created by the PMF Media Group, VentureLift Africa and The Blackhouse Foundation, the IWL is a unique accelerator and fellowship program that combines a writers lab —  facilitated by the award-winning American filmmaker, Matty Rich (Straight Out Of Brooklyn and Inkwell), — mentorship from writers with Hollywood credits, career and business advice from Hollywood agents, studio executives, international sales agents, and talent management companies, and a pitch-fest to receive feedback and advice from distributors to refine the Fellows’ projects. The Storyboard Collective is also a partner in the program.

Ghana’s film industry has continued to play a significant role in African filmmaking; however, more can be done in the film ecosystem to boost economic development and create jobs.

The National Film Authority, with its vision to assist writers to sharpen their skills and meet international best practices, shares this goal with the International Writers’ Lab. Anchored on this project, this partnership with IWL will open avenues for scriptwriters in Ghana to build their capacity and be exposed to global opportunities.

More resources are needed to support outstanding film and television writers in Ghana. The IWL seeks to help in this direction by broadening the global networks of talented African writers.

The CEO of the NFA, Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, views the partnership as “an avenue to help us strengthen the infrastructure the NFA is building for filmmakers in Ghana.

“Film is built on stories, and these stories must be written and told in a creative way. We need creative writers to tell the Ghanaian and African stories and IWL will build the capacity of our writers to do that.”

Up to five fellows will be selected for the Ghana cohort to refine their scripts for film. The fellows will be experienced writers with local and international credits and emerging changemakers in the African and global creative ecosystems.

Pauline Fischer, founder of PMF Media Group and visionary for the program, hopes that the “fellows will emerge from the lab with enhanced skills and networks to successfully navigate Hollywood and build their brands as writers in the global entertainment industry.”

The 16-week program aims to culminate in a trip to an international film festi, where the fellows will have the opportunity to participate in additional programs and further expand their professional network.

For Wilmot Allen, Founder of VentureLift Africa, the IWL also demonstrates another sustainable approach for diaspora engagement with Africa.

“The diaspora, including African Americans, working collaboratively with the deep creative talent in Africa can catalyze a renaissance of cultural production, new agency in narrative creation, and shared prosperity.”

The IWL intends to expand its programming to include animation and gaming across the continent in the coming year.

Kokofu Seeks Blessings For Bawumia

0

THE EXECUTIVE Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Henry Kwabena Kokofu has expressed gratitude to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, for his continuous guidance and support to the President and Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.

According to Kokofu, he believes the spiritual support of the Supreme Leader has been a major backbone for the political successes of the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.
Dr. Kokofu made the appeal when he paid a courtesy call to the National Chief Imam at his residence, underscoring the role the Islamic leader has played in maintaining peace and harmony amongst all religious sects in the country.

The EPA boss has therefore appealed to the Islamic Leader to continue to lend his wise counsel and spiritual intervention to the seat of Government and the entire country.

Dr. Kokofu indicated that the impact the Vice President, particularly, has had over the years on Ghana’s socio-political and economic development has not come by accident, stressing that as a ‘spiritual father and guardian’, the National Chief Imam has played an immense role in the life of the most productive and competent Vice President the country has ever experienced.

The National Chief Imam expressed gratitude to the delegation for the visit and the kind gesture.

He reiterated the call for Ghanaians to continue to live in peace and harmony amongst each other since without peace Ghana cannot develop as a country.

The EPA Executive Director and his staff were also at the official residence of the National Chief Imam to wish him well as he celebrated his 104th birthday.

The delegation also made huge donations of food items, as well as an undisclosed sum of money to the Office of the National Chief Imam as their widow’s mite towards the just-ended Ramadan festivities.

Accelerate The Adoption Of Iot To Shape Ghana’s Digital Future-Vodafone Head Of Network Tells Stakeholders | Technology

0

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of mobile telecommunications, Vodafone Ghana is urging all stakeholders in the industry to collaborate in promoting the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) to shape the country’s digital future.

Ebenezer Siebu, Head of Network at Vodafone Ghana, emphasised the importance of advancing the IoT agenda to connect devices and meet consumers’ real-time needs. Mr Siebu noted that Vodafone Ghana is already spearheading this initiative through products and services such as the V-Tracker solution, which allows companies to monitor assets, devices, and driver compliance.

In an interview with Onua TV and FM, Mr Siebu discussed Vodafone Ghana’s internal use of V-Tracker to ensure the safety of its employees on the road. He explained that the company utilises tracking devices on its vehicles to monitor speed and manage journeys for its staff, receiving alerts when drivers are speeding or have reached the point of exhaustion. The tracking solution also encourages discipline among drivers, prompting them to remain vigilant while on the road.

Mr Siebu added that Vodafone has collaborated with key stakeholders in various enterprises and public agencies to implement tracking solutions for their vehicles. He expressed optimism that if more organisations embrace IoT, it will have a far-reaching impact on people’s lives and contribute to a thriving economy in Ghana.

April 3 marked the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first-ever mobile phone call, which revolutionized how people communicate. This year, the celebration marks 50 years of progress in the mobile telecommunication industry, enabling people to stay connected regardless of their location. The anniversary also serves as a reminder of the significant transformations in the industry and the potential for future advancements in mobile technology.

In related news, Vodafone Ghana has partnered with Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) to launch the Vehicle-Tracker (V-Tracker) Road Safety project. This initiative leverages Vodafone’s IoT technology to help MMT reduce the occurrence of road accidents involving its buses.

The V-Tracker project is a pioneering initiative under Vodafone’s Hero Projects, which focuses on connecting people, places, and things through technology. As part of the pilot programme, Vodafone Ghana has equipped ten MMT buses with its V-Tracker solution. This technology, which includes a camera, sensors, and software, is integrated into a vehicle tracking and reporting system that allows MMT to monitor driver performance and intervene when necessary.

The system measures speed, sudden turns, heavy braking, and other indicators of improper driving, relaying these signals instantly to a monitoring centre at MMT’s base of operations.

Ghana needs an inspirational leader, not another political party – Kofi Koranteng –

0

Independent presidential aspirant for the 2024 general elections, Kofi Koranteng has asked Ghanaians to ditch the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming elections.

He also indicated that Alan Kyeremanten’s move from the NPP to launch his new “Movement for Change” party comes around as an “elite faux pas” rather than an agenda to save the country.

Speaking on Happy98.9fm’s “Happy Morning Show” with Kwadwo Sefa Danqwah, Kofi Koranteng claimed that the country’s problems are a result of poor governance by the two major political parties.

He promised Ghanaians that when he is given the go-ahead on December 7, 2024, the gross mismanagement in the previous four decades will be undone.

“Ghanaians are searching for a new leader rather than a new political party,” he said.

In order to aid in the nation’s development, he also urged for an appropriate national plan including sustainable job development in agriculture and other essential industries.

“It’s clear that people in this country need jobs badly, but many young people and recent graduates are still without employment. If the proper measures are taken, we can employ a lot of people,” he remarked.

As part of his initiative to develop the country, he picked agriculture as a key sector that will bolster the economy.

US court jails Ghanaian couple 25 years each for murdering five-year-old son –

0

A Ghanaian couple, Valarie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae, both 28, have been handed a sentence of 25 years to life imprisonment for the murder of their five-year-old son.

The sentencing, which took place on May 1, 2024, saw the couple convicted of second-degree depraved indifference murder.

The tragic case unfolded in Corona, Queens, where the couple resided.

Despite their pleas for leniency and expressions of love for the child, acting State Supreme Court Justice Steven Pilewski imposed the maximum sentence allowed by law.

During the trial, Valarie Owusu, attempted to deflect responsibility, claiming ignorance of the severity of her son’s injuries until they were revealed in court.

She recounted entering into a relationship with Addae, the father of her two other children, in search of a paternal figure for her son.

Overcome with emotion, she expressed deep regret for not recognizing the gravity of the abuse sooner.

Emmanuel Addae, the stepfather, also professed his affection for the young boy, King Owusu, and shared his hope for a spiritual reunion.

Read below how the couple were earlier found guilty by a jury for the murder of their son as published on the Suffol County website

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Valerie Owusu, 28, and Emmanuel Addae, 28, of Corona, Queens, were found guilty of Murder in the Second Degree after a jury trial, for the 2021 beating death of Owusu’s 5-year-old son, King Owusu.

“This little boy was beaten and suffered for days at the hands of these defendants, one of whom was his own mother, until he unfortunately succumbed to his severe and extensive injuries,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Thanks to the thorough investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department, the relentless pursuit of justice by the prosecutors assigned to this case, and the jury’s careful consideration of the evidence presented, the defendants have been held accountable for this horrific crime.”

The evidence at trial established that between March 30 and April 1, 2021, Owusu and Addae brutally beat King with at least four different instruments inside of their apartment in Lefrak City, Queens. The couple watched King’s physical condition deteriorate for approximately three days until King lost unconsciousness. During that time, both Owusu and Addae did not call 911, take King to the doctor, or provide any medical care to the child.

On April 1, 2021, Owusu and Addae brought King to a family member’s home in Brentwood and left him there to die. The Suffolk County Police Department was called after the family member returned home the same day and discovered that the boy was deceased. The child was taken to Southside Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner who conducted the child’s autopsy testified that King was beaten from head to toe, and that his injuries, which were too numerous to count, caused his death.

On March 22, 2024, Owusu and Addae were each convicted of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A felony, after a two-and-a-half-week-long jury trial heard before Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski. Each defendant faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

Owusu and Addae are due back in court for sentencing on May 1, 2024. Owusu is being represented by Rene Myatt, Esq. Addae is being represented by Raymond Baierlein, Esq.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Elena Tomaro of the Homicide Bureau, Assistant District Attorney Scott Romano of the Major Crime Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detective Patrick Portella and Detective James Hughes of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad.

0

During an interview with Arise News, Umeh Nkenchinyere was asked by Dr. Reuben Abati to explain how her JAMB result slip looks like following the controversy surrounding Mmesoma’s result slip because JAMB denied the result and stated that the last time the slip was used was in 2021, and it has changed since then.

As regards this, Umeh Nkechinyere stated that she was not the one who checked her result when it came out, but her mother. She revealed that she was in school when they told her that the result was out, so she went to her guardian to help her call her mom to check her result for her. She added that her mom checked and called her back to say that she scored 360. Nkenchinyere revealed that she had not seen the slip until now because she already knew her score. She, however, stated that she has seen the results of some of her classmates, pointing out that there are pictures attached to them.

According to her, “I haven’t seen my result slip personally, the JAMB printout; I haven’t seen it, but I have seen the slip of my other classmate, who has printed out their own. Yes, there’s like a photograph of them, even about two, one from the NIN and then one from the JAMB registration.”

When asked how she prepared for the exam, she stated that she prayed so hard for it and read different books in order to know more. She also revealed that she started preparation before the exam and studied past JAMB questions.

NPA to regulate bitumen supply chain to ensure quality and efficiency

0

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is developing a framework to regulate the importation, storage, processing and marketing of bitumen in the country.

The framework, which will have inputs from the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA), and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), is to streamline the bitumen supply chain and ensure compliance with quality standards specifications.

The NPA Chief Executive, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, and Management members of the Authority made this known on Wednesday, April 12, during an inspection tour of a bitumen storage and production plant at Tema jointly owned by Goil Good Energy and Societe’ Multinationale de Bitimumes (SMB) of Cote d’Ivoire.

The facility with 7,500 metric tonnes installed capacity takes delivery of bitumen from Cote d’Ivoire.

One component of the facility produces polymer-modified bitumen and bitumen emulsions, which are combinations of bitumen and some chemicals.

Operations started in September 2022, and arrangements are underway for the official commissioning of the plant, possibly by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Ivorian counterpart Mr. Alassane Ouattara this year.

Per the law establishing the NPA, it has the mandate to regulate all petroleum products, including bitumen, which is mainly used for road construction.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid affirmed the commitment of the NPA to streamline the bitumen supply chain to ensure compliance with industry standards.

Giving details of the NPA’s actions, the Head of Planning of NPA, Mr. Dominic Aboagye indicated that the NPA constituted a committee a couple of years ago to look at the entire bitumen supply chain to see how to streamline the sector.

Consequently, he said, the Authority engaged players in the bitumen value chain to understand their operations, and it turned out that much of the supply was from Cote d’Ivoire.

With that information, a team from the NPA led by Dr. Abdul-Hamid visited Cote d’Ivoire in 2021 to study the operations of Societe’ Multinationale de Bitimumes (SMB), the main exporter of bitumen to Ghana.

Mr. Aboagye said the NPA committee had been developing the framework, and indicated that the Authority would engage the GHA, the GSA, the Customs Division of GRA, and players in the bitumen supply chain to finalize the framework to regulate the sector.

He said all players in the bitumen supply chain would be licensed by the NPA to streamline their operations.

In their presentations, the Group CEO of Goil Company Limited, Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh said the plant had been selling the bitumen, polymer-modified bitumen, and bitumen emulsions on demand for road construction.

Chiefs must be involved in active politics – Alban Bagbin

Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has indicated that chiefs who have already assumed leadership positions must be allowed to take part in active politics.

He explained that sidelining the chieftaincy institution and preventing it from taking its rightful position to contribute effectively to governance does not benefit the country in anyway.

Mr Bagbin was speaking at a meeting with traditional authorities at the Volta Region House of Chiefs, during his visit to commemorate three decades of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.

“I completely disagree with the framers of the Constitution when they say that Chiefs cannot play active politics”, he said.

He said that the Constitution preventing chiefs from contesting political positions was against the basic principles of human rights, as they were denied the right to be voted for.

“The Supreme Court has given us an explanation of what they meant by active politics. But by the franchise, your right to vote is made up of two ingredients. The right to vote for somebody and the right also to be voted for by some people, that is the franchise.

So how can you give them half of it? The chiefs can vote for people but nobody can vote for them. That definitely is wrongful and unlawful. You can say it is constitutional, but basically, it doesn’t sit well with the basic principles of human rights”, he explained.

He complained about the fact that chiefs who are already community leaders were being prevented by the constitution from performing their primary role of leading their respective jurisdictions to develop and ensure that policies are effectively implemented.

“That is oxymoron, contradicting itself. These are some of the intricacies that we have to sit down to resolve. It is not right”, he stressed.

He, therefore, called for an amendment of the Chieftaincy Act to reposition the chieftaincy institution as an integral part of governance, to rectify the contradictions caused by the constitution.

He opined that the reforms could focus on modernizing the chieftaincy institution to meet the current dynamics of society, adding that the state must constantly support the institution to play its mandated roles in helping to develop the country.

Alan Fires Ken Ofori-Atta –

Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has revealed that he and a few state officials defended the decision by the government to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2021, while Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was nowhere to be found.

Kyerematen made this revelation during an interview on Accra-based UTV on Tuesday, September 26 a day after he broke away from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He questioned the confidence of Ofori-Atta in defending the decision, saying, “Did you hear from the Finance Minister, having the confidence to defend it?” This contrasts with comments made by Kyerematen in July when he was campaigning to be the NPP’s flagbearer in the Greater Accra Region, stating that if Ghanaians had listened to him, the country wouldn’t have gone to the IMF.

In his latest interview, Kyerematen also implored supporters of other political parties to vote for him in the 2024 presidential elections while retaining their allegiance to their party’s Members of Parliament.

This development is sure to create some unease within the New Patriotic Party as Ofori-Atta’s competence as Finance Minister comes under scrutiny.
It remains to be seen how the party hierarchy will manage this delicate situation in the coming days.

Agbodza hits back at BoG Governor over refusal to resign

0

The Minority Chief Whip, Governs Agbodza has hit back at the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison over his comments not to resign from his post despite several calls from opposition parties.

In an interview with international business news website, Central Banking, Addison said he is not stepping down, describing the protest by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as “completely unnecessary.”

“The Minority [MPs] in Parliament have many channels to channel their grievances in civilised societies, not through demonstrations in the streets as hooligans,” Addison added in reference to the #OccupyBoGProtest.

But reacting to this, the MP for the Adaklu constituency said he believed the Governor of the central bank was being shielded hence his remarks.

He warned that Dr Addison would soon be made to face the full rigours of the law.

“He’s a protected arrogant thief. His day to face justice will surely come,” Agbodza warned.

The Minority held a protest on Tuesday to demand the resignation of the BoG Governor and his deputies following loses incurred by the apex bank as well as an ongoing head office complex.

Leaders of the protest refused to hand over their petition to the head of security at the BoG instead of the Governor or his deputies. They have decided to continue protesting until Dr. Addison and his deputies resign.

The suspect in police custody

A LOVE text message on a mobile phone has exposed a young man, who allegedly defiled a 13-year-old girl at Bremang, a suburb of Kumasi.

The suspect, identified by the police as Godvessel Nanaba Nkrumah, secretly had sexual relations with the girl (name withheld).

However, the suspect’s illegal and weird secret action eventually got exposed as love messages he had shared with the girl on phone were seen.

The girl’s mother, after seeing the love messages, reportedly, confronted her daughter, who confessed that Nkrumah had sex with her on two occasions.

The incensed woman reported the case to the Tafo Pankrono Police, who quickly apprehended the suspect to assist in investigations.

“On 10/04/24, Theresa Mansa of Bremang came to the DOVVSU Unit with her daughter, aged 13 years, with a report that she detected love text conversation (messages) between her daughter (victim) and suspect Godvessel Nanaba Nkrumah.

“That when questioned, victim disclosed to her that suspect had sexual intercourse with her on 2/04/2024 and 6/04/2024 at Tafo Bonsuom and Santase, respectively,” a police report said.

Police medical form, the report noted, was then issued to the complainant on behalf of the victim to attend any government hospital for examination, treatment and endorsement.

“On 14/04/2024, suspect was arrested and when questioned, he admitted the offense,” the police statement disclosed, adding that “suspect is in custody.”

Hearts of Oak give up on title chances after humiliating defeat

David Ocloo

Interim Hearts of Oak coach, David Ocloo, has ruled out any chances of his side winning the ongoing 2022/23 Ghana Premier League after their humiliating defeat over the weekend.

The Phobians suffered a devastating 1-5 defeat to Medeama Sporting Club on match-day 31 of the top flight at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

A Jonathan Sowah brace and other goals from Vincent Atingah, Derrick Fordjour, as well as Kwasi Bonsu, handed Hearts their biggest loss of the 2022/23 season.

The defeat leaves Hearts in the seventh position with eight points behind league leaders Medeama.

“Yeah, yeah, [our title charge] is over. We play now to get a respectable position,” Ocloo told StarTimes after the fixture.

Hearts could drop further down should Asante Kotoko pick up a win later on Monday in their game against Kotoku Royals.

The Phobians will be hosted by Legon Cities in the matchday 32 games at El Wak Stadium on Saturday.

Somalia orders ban on TikTok and Telegram

0

Somalia has announced a ban on social media platforms Tiktok and Telegram and the online betting platform 1XBet.

The government says these platforms are being used by “terrorists and groups responsible for spreading immorality… to spread graphic clips, photos and mislead society”.

It comes as Somalia announces an ambitious target to crush the al-Shabab militant group, which still controls large swathes of the country, within the next five months.

Internet service providers are required to implement the ban by 24 August or face unspecified legal action, the ministry of communications and technology said in a statement.

A recent conference on internet and social media security in the capital, Mogadishu, highlighted the negative impact of online platforms on young people, including “causing some of them to lose their lives”.

COCOBOD turnout strategy consistent with IMF recommendations – Report –

0

The International Monetary Fund has said that Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has developed a turnaround strategy to strengthen the transparency and efficiency of its operations and ensure financial viability.

The state-owned entity mandated with facilitating cocoa production and exercising export monopoly—has long registered losses due to the absence of a systematic mechanism for setting producer purchase price (PPP), significant quasi-fiscal activities (roads construction and input subsidy programs), and large administrative costs.

The debt accumulated by COCOBOD over the past few years became too expensive to service and had to be restructured.

The IMF said COCOBOD’s turnaround strategy focuses on rationalising its development spending, better aligning the PPP setting process with the Board’s financing constraints, and enhancing oversight is broadly consistent with its staff’s recommendations.

Quasi-fiscal activities

The report said COCOBOD has reviewed existing cocoa road contracts with a view to rationalising them significantly, considering their completion status, performance, and termination costs.

“Additional rationalisation may be pursued in case of financing pressures. The board also intends to scale down fertilizer and pesticide subsidy programmes”.

Price setting

The IMF said the government and COCOBOD will start introducing a range for PPP set as a share of the FOB export price.

The range, which will be reviewed every other year, would ensure not only a fair distribution of export proceeds among farmers and other stakeholders in the value chain but would also guarantee a sufficient revenue stream for COCOBOD to recover its operational and financial costs.

For the 2024 and 2025 seasons, the report added that the authorities have set the minimum and maximum PPP (inclusive of Living Income Differential cost) at 60% and 70% of the contract FOB price.

Oversight

The report explained that the authorities will strengthen the Ministry of Finance’s oversight of COCOBOD’s finances, including through establishing a dedicated cocoa desk at the Ministry of Finance

With or without my input, Sarkodie’s Album would still be a hit

– –

The Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Awards (VGMAs), Black Sherif, has responded to the allegations that the success of Sarkodie’s “Jamz” album would not have occurred without his contribution.

On the “Jamz” album, Black Sherif and Sarkodie’s song “Country Side” immediately rose to the top of the charts, prompting some fans to speculate that Black Sherif’s involvement significantly influenced the album’s overall appeal.

However, Black Sherif in an interview with MzGee on United took the opportunity to clarify his stance on these claims, emphasizing that the album would have attained its current status with or without his involvement.

– –

“It would have been what it will be. is a spiritual thing. From my lens, Albums and singles are babies. I don’t know his destiny. If I wasn’t on it, I don’t know his destiny, so whatever the album would have been, would have been,” he stated during the interview.

Black Sherif further acknowledged Sarkodie’s extensive experience and career longevity, noting that the acclaimed rapper had been making music for years before he entered the picture. He expressed humility by stating that he would not presume to dictate the success or failure of Sarkodie’s album, stating, “Am I the one to come and tell him that without me, his album would go nowhere? We don’t talk like that. I’ve just been here for four years, subtract it from his [Sarkodie’s] years.”

Born Mohammed Ismail Sharrif, Blacko, 21 in an earlier interview on TV3 also explained why he failed to join Sarkodie to perform ‘Countryside’ at the recently held VGMAs.

“I am a big fan of Sarkodie. I wanted to sit and experience him perform,” Black Sherif said.
