Nigerian singer Oxlade fined ₦5m over leaked sex tape

0

Nigerian singer and songwriter Oxlade has been fined ₦5million after a long battle in court over his leaked sex tape case.

An Ikeja High Court in Lagos State awarded the money, equient to $10,856.82, to the plaintiff only identified as Blessing – the woman who was captured in the video with the singer.

In a judgement delivered on January 24, 2023, Justice Olalekan Oresanya described the musician recording their sexual activity as “despicable, horrendous, classless and distasteful.”

This comes after Blessing, in March 2022, filed a suit before the Court seeking ₦20million damages after the sex tape leaked online.

She also demanded a declaration that the singer’s act of recording his explicit sexual acts without her knowledge amounted to flagrant contravention of enabling laws, violation of her fundamental rights to dignity, privacy and freedom from discrimination guaranteed under Sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended); and Articles 5 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement), Act, CAP A9, LFN, 2004.

Meanwhile, the judge ordered Oxlade to pay the sum of ₦5million damages to Blessing in two instalments of ₦3 million and ₦2 million, respectively.

Background

Oxlade went viral on social media on February 9, 2022, after a video purporting to be the Afrobeats singer, known in real life as Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, supposedly having sex with a lady broke the internet.

The alleged tape, which was reportedly leaked on Snapchat, made its way onto the micro-blogging site shortly after it went viral.

A week after the tape was released, Oxlade apologised to the young lady seen with him in the video. He stated that the young woman did not deserve this type of exposure she’s been forced to deal with.

But reacting to Oxlade’s statement, the woman demanded compensation from the musician.

In leaked conversations between her and the rising act, the lady demanded about $20,000 for the damages the tape has brought her.

According to her, she was, among other things, disowned by her family, and her close associates, including Oxlade, whom she accused of ignoring her since the clip surfaced.

Blaming Oxlade for putting her in such a position, she wrote to him on Snapchat, “you are turning me into a monster. I am happy to turn; you are wicked; my fam disowned me.”

Later in a WhatsApp chat, she expressed her displeasure about being ignored, but Oxlade, in turn, said he was not having an easy time either.

However, the disgruntled woman told the musician, following the disruption the leaked tape had brought into her life, she would like to travel and begin life anew.

Although Oxlade offered to pay for her flight to Ghana and give her monthly upkeeps, she demanded more.

“I want $20k. My life is more or less ruined. I need to move to a new city and country at this point. Rent a place. If we are being honest, I deserve more than that,” she wrote.

She subsequently sued the singer.

In addition, the judgment prohibits Blessing from beginning any additional legal procedure or any process relating to the facts and matters giving rise to the litigation, as well as from instituting or addressing the concerns raised in the claim on any platform or before any third person.

Watch out for Asamoah Gyan – Sammi Awuku announces [Video]

0

Watch out for Asamoah Gyan, these are the words of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku.

In his view, the Ghanaian football legend should not be underestimated because he has brilliant ideas to revive Ghana’s ailing sports sector.

Mr. Awuku made this known on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, after Asamoah Gyan was spotted at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent address on Wednesday, February 7.

When the host inquired why people should watch out for Asamoah Gyan, Mr. Awuku said, “I won’t comment on it, but all I can say is that we should watch out for Asamoah Gyan.”

He mentioned that, Dr. Bawumia appreciates people with great ideas.

“Watch out for him. Dr. Bawumia likes people with great ideas. He is his good friend, and so watch out for him; you will soon hear from him.” he said.

Mr. Awuku described Gyan as “one guy who has solid ideas and is an iconic figure. Love him or hate him.”

Going forward, he encouraged the former Black Stars captain to show more interest in policy and politics.

“He may never know. Now that he is on retirement and resting, he should come and show his prowess in politics.” he added.

CSOs Kick Against Attempt To Sell 50% Interest Of JOHL |

0

The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Coalition on Extractive Governance has raised concerns over attempts by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to sell a 50 percent stake of Jubilee Oil Holding Limited (JOHL) to PetroSA, a South African firm.

JOHL, a subsidiary of the GNPC, was acquired in 2021 at the cost of US$164,798,691 by GNPC through a Share Purchase Agreement between Anadarko Offshore and GNPC with monies advanced by the Ministry of Finance. In 2022 alone, the interest of JOHL raked in some US$290million, according to the 2022 PIAC annual report. Total payments for cash calls (including fields in which Explorco holds an interest) amounted to US$83million – leaving a gross margin of US$207million for GNPC/JOHL from the Jubilee and TEN fields operated by Tullow Ghana.

Despite the revenue potential of this interest to the state, the coalition said GNPC has initiated steps to sell 50 percent of JOHL’s assets held in the Cayman Islands to PetroSA, in what the CSOs described as bizarre circumstance two years after Anadarko sold the asset to GNPC. Details of the deal came to light in a letter from the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, in which he urged the president not to approve the transaction.

“Given that US$290million has already accrued to JOHL, the purchase of 50 percent imply that PetroSA would receive a percentage of the accrued benefits net of the purchase price and other costs – and meaning that PetroSA may not have to pay anything for interest. We are actively monitoring the sharp political tussle for and against sale of the asset. This situation was always possible when government decided to domicile Ghana’s asset in a tax haven and refused persistent calls to bring back the asset to Ghana,” the coalition said at a press conference in Accra.

The over-32-strong CSOs including the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC), National Coalition on Mining (NCOM), IMANI Centre for Policy and Education and the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), while commending the Minister of Energy demanded full details of the transaction as well as an immediate removal of the GNPC’s Board Chair, Freddie W. Blay, and Chief Executive Officer, Opoku Ahweneeh Danquah, adding that their continuous stay in office poses a threat to country’s interests in the petroleum sector.

According to the CSOs, GNPC has already agreed to a pre-emption claim of PetroSA though the Minister of Energy has written to the corporation and the president to oppose the transaction.

It is against this backdrop that they are questioning GNPC’s motive to undertake this transaction despite the revenue potential to the state, two years after Anadarko sold the asset to the state-owned firm.

“This situation was always possible when government decided to domicile the country’s asset in a tax haven and refused persistent calls to bring the asset back to Ghana. In the meantime, we wish to state emphatically that the pre-emption claims are illegal, and those contemplating it have interests at variance with those of the state,” it said.

The coalition argued that it is unjustifiable for PetroSA to pre-empt the state’s interest without any legal basis in the petroleum (exploration and production) law and the applicable petroleum agreement: “Therefore, for the board chairman and CEO to have concocted a justification for the pre-emption, their continued stay in office – close to any petroleum asset – poses significant risks to Ghana’s interests in all petroleum operations.

“We are concerned that the two directors of JOHL have supervised the secrecy around the company – and have made no attempt to account for its revenues and expenditures. They have shown no interest and have woefully failed to operationalise any corporate governance structures, including appointing a managing director or a functional board for JOHL. Furthermore, they have not made any attempt to transfer the interests of JOHL to Explorco or GNPC as originally stated in GNPC’s statement announcing the transaction,” the coalition added.

Among other things, the CSOs demanded an immediate transfer of JOHL and all its assets from the Cayman Islands and other jurisdictions to GNPC.

Other coalition members are the Centre for Extractives and Development Africa (CEDA), Civil Society Platform on Oil and Gas (CSPOG), Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), CSOs Open Licencing Monitoring Group, Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), and Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC), among others.

With great urgency backed by verifiable data, facts and figures dismiss COCOBOD, ECG, GNPC, GACL CEOs — Group

0

An advocacy group calling itself United Voices for Change is calling for the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officers of major state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

They want the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Ghana Water Company Limited, and Ghana Airport Company Limited dismissed, citing mismanagement of resources as they continue to incur losses.

The group also accused the agencies of private involvement in the management of affairs, stating that it is a deliberate attempt by politicians to push the CEOs of these institutions to run the enterprises into a ditch and later engage in corrupt practices of selling off the devalued state-owned enterprises to themselves.

Speaking to Citi News, the convener of the group, who is a lecturer and Head of the Department for Banking and Finance at Kumasi Technical University, Professor Abdul Aziz Iddrisu, expressed deep concern over the alarming figures illustrating the declining financial well-being of state-owned enterprises and their impact on the nation’s development and economic stability.

The convener stated that “our state-owned enterprises are underperforming; this has drained the country’s resources and plunged the country into underdevelopment and indebtedness. Undisputedly, SOEs are profit-oriented entities and should be making profits.

“Sadly enough, it appears the managers of these enterprises, in key positions, are more loyal to their appointing authorities than to the development of the companies, leading them to deliberately run SOEs at a loss.”

“It is with great urgency backed by verifiable data, facts and figures that we call for the dismissal of the CEOs of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and Ghana Water Company Limited, and Ghana Airport Company. These individuals have presided over a period of financial decline and recklessness and have failed to fulfil their mandates of ensuring profitability and revenue generation for the state.

“We also want the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, and the Attorney General to ensure that the CEOs of these entities, after being dismissed, face the law.”

Gareth Southgate explains what went wrong for England in Euro 2024 group stage –

0

Gareth Southgate admitted England have lacked good fortune in front of goal so far in their Euro 2024 campaign.

The Three Lions may have finished top of Group C but Southgate and his players find themselves under immense pressure after three poor showings, the latest of which was a 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday.

As Southgate went to applaud the fans after the game, a handful of cups were thrown in his direction as disgruntled fans made their frustrations known, and the England boss admitted he understood the disappointment from supporters.

“I thought we were much improved with the ball,” he told ITV after the final whistle. “We have created some good openings and at the moment it is hard work for us.

“We are not quite getting that break in front of goal. I think the players who came on did well. I understand the reactions but it is a tough environment.

“We tried to win the game by the changes we made. We put attacking players on the pitch.

“Tonight we went with Conor [Gallagher] who presses well and we did that better. Then we felt Kobbie Mainoo’s control of the ball would help us. I don’t think we were going to go from where we were to winning 3-0 or 4-0.”

Defender John Stones also urged fans to look at the positives and remain supportive of the team heading into the knockout stages.

“The objective was to top the group and we have done that – it is not always going to be an easy road,” the Manchester City centre-back insisted. “It is not going to be easy when we have a target on our back to beat us.

“I thought there was a lot of improvement from the other two games, we found people in the pockets and created more chances – another step in the right direction.

“I can get the fans frustration not taking chances, but that is football – it is never an easy game.”

NDC clears 30 aspirants to contest Parliamentary primaries in Upper West Region

0

All 30 aspirants who filed their nominations to contest the upcoming Parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper West Region have been cleared after successfully going through the vetting process.

The vetting exercise, which was expected to commence at about 9 am on Monday, April 3, started at around 11 am and ended around 11 pm.

Out of the 30 aspirants, Jennifer Nanfuri, the only female, is contesting for the Jirapa Constituency slot against the incumbent MP, Cletus Dapilaah, and Bright Salia.

A press statement signed by the Upper West Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, Issah Kantagyere commended the aspirants and their supporters for exercising restraint to ensure a violence-free exercise.

The Deputy National Women’s Organiser and member of the National Executive Committee (NEC), Abigail Elorm Mensah chaired the five-member vetting committee with Mohammed Alhassan who is also a member of the NEC.

Other members included Abdul Nasir Saani, NDC Upper West Regional Chairman; Alhaji Nurah Issah Danwanaa, Deputy Regional Secretary and Hajia Bintu, Regional Council of Elders’ representative.

The statement entreated the aspirants to place the interest of the party ahead of their personal interests as winning all eleven seats in the region for the party come 2024 was paramount.

“It is a family affair, and we will all need each other collectively to achieve our target agenda of winning all 11 seats and also increase the votes for John Dramani Mahama come December 7, 2024, and this can only be achieved if and only if there is total unity among us,” it explained.

Speaking after going through the vetting process, Bede A. Ziedeng, the incumbent MP for the Lawra, expressed confidence that he would win the primaries overwhelmingly on May 13, 2023, considering his achievement in his first term in office.

“I am confident, absolutely confident that I am going to win this election because of what I have done in the constituency in the health sector, education, and water and sanitation,” Mr Ziedeng explained.

He cited the rehabilitation and mechanisation of two water systems at Eremon and Dowmine Health Centres, the repairing of over 50 broken-down boreholes, donation of three heavy-duty air-conditioners to the cold room of the Lawra Municipal Health Directorate among others, as some achievements in his two years in Parliament.

Mr Ziedeng said he had also supported about 220 students in the Constituency with part-payment of their school fees amounting to ¢250,000 and supported the Brifoh and Lawra Senior High School and the Eremon Senior High Technical School during their distress moments.

On his part, Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu, the incumbent MP for Wa West Constituency, also expressed confidence that the delegates would retain him to lead the party in the constituency into the 2024 general election.

Other aspirants also expressed confidence in emerging victorious in the elections.

Out of the 30 aspirants, 22 are new entrants while the remaining eight aspirants are sitting MPs.

The Wa Central constituency had four aspirants; Nadowli-Kaleo, Daffiama-Bussie-Issa (DBI), Sissala West, and Nandom constituencies had two aspirants each; while Wa West, Wa East, Jirapa, Lawra, Lambussie, and Sissala West Constituencies had three aspirants each.

Don’t let ignorance prevail over common sense – Adongo to Bawumia –

0

Hon Isaac Adongo Member of Parliament(MP) for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo has said that in the case of the 24-hour economy, there should not be room for ignorance to prevail over common sense.

He believes that people who do not believe in the 24-hour economy are doing so out of ignorance and room should not be given to such individuals.

On claims that the policy alternative provided by John Dramani Mahama is not a novelty, Isaac Adongo said” We were building factories in Ghana when he promised One District, One Factory, was that a novelty? We don’t want ignorance to prevail over common sense.

If you are a country and you have the capacity to produce and you’re saying that if I produce nobody will buy, the leader of the country doesn’t qualify to be a leader,” he said in an interview to be aired on TV3.

On singling out the Vice President and blaming him for the economic challenges in the country, Adongo said “So when I criticized Maguire, was Maguire the only player in the team? You went out and told then that you have arrested the Cedi or the Dollar, you didn’t know that the buck stops with the President?

Disturbing Video of kids throwing stones at an old man amid mocking him breaks heart; Netizens Cry

– –

Social media has indeed made us forget our manners and respect for the elderly.

Before the spread and addiction of this small ‘devil’ called the internet, the respect for grownups was high.

You could hardly hear or see any younger one disrespecting an elderly to talk of inflicting pain on them, You Dare Not!

But this generation we call the 21st Century is spoilt to the extent that they glorify disrespecting the elderly at the least chance and also post their lives on social media.

We have lost our conscience and morals now because of how we abuse the media.

You see someone suffering or in trouble and the best we can do is to film it for social media.

Immorality is at its peak and our culture, custom and identity have been downplayed and forgotten. Mercy

Well, a video that has taken a fast trend in the last few hours sees a group of kids inflicting pain on an elderly man who can pass as their Grandfather.

These kids were seen throwing stones at an old man who seemed unwell and going to his destination.

For reason yet unknown, these kids from nowhere attacked the man and started throwing stones at him and mocking him.

The man, on the other side, was helpless and tried to get the kids to stop but they wouldn’t.

Suspends 15% VAT On Electricity- Finance Ministry Tells ECG

0

The government has officially suspended the planned implementation of the 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on domestic consumption of electricity.

In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, both the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) were directed to halt the charging of the levy.

The decision to suspend the VAT implementation was made to allow for extensive dialogue and to obtain input from industry players and labor unions. Concerns had been raised about the potential impact of the tax on consumers and businesses, prompting the need for further consultation.

“On behalf of the government, the Ministry would like to inform ECG and NEDCO to suspend the implementation of the VAT directive pending further engagements with key stakeholders, including organized labor,” the statement from the Ministry of Finance read.

The government had initially directed the imposition of the VAT policy on electricity consumers above the maximum consumption level specified for block charges for lifeline units. This directive was intended to support the country’s Medium-Term Revenue Strategy and the IMF-Supported Post-COVID-19 Program for Economic Growth (PC-PEG) by mobilizing revenue.
However, the decision faced strong opposition from various interest groups who deemed it punitive and poorly thought out.

Earlier reports indicated that the government was considering engaging with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the anticipated revenue shortfall and seek a consensus on the suspension of the VAT on electricity.

“The Ministry expects that these engagements will lead to innovative, robust, and inclusive approaches to bridging the existing fiscal gap while bolstering economic resilience,” the release from the Ministry stated.

Organized labor had planned a nationwide demonstration on February 13, 2024, to call for the withdrawal of the directive to implement the 15% VAT on residential electricity consumption. Earlier this week, members of the labor unions wore red bands at work as a symbol of their readiness for a nationwide strike if the VAT directive was not withdrawn following the demonstration.

The official suspension of the controversial 15% VAT on electricity demonstrates the government’s responsiveness to the concerns raised by various stakeholders. It also paves the way for further engagement and dialogue to find alternative solutions that balance revenue generation with the welfare of consumers and businesses.

‘Those With Integrity, Character Are With Us’ – Fubara Lauds Odili For Declaring Him Rivers Political Leader

Wike: ‘Those With Integrity, Character Are With Us' – Fubara Lauds Odili For Declaring Him Rivers Political Leader

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, at the weekend, posited that the State’s former Governor, Peter Odili, is someone with character and integrity.

Recall that last week, Odili publicly announced his support for Fubara and declared him the political leader of the State.

This is as Fubara has been locked in a struggle for control of State’s political structure with Nyesom Wike, his successor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Our people said I should tell you to stand with the president and align with his positive policies and link the people of Rivers state with the centre.

“They have asked me to tell you that you are the political leader of Rivers State. Rivers people say where you go, they will go with you,” Odili had said.

However, in his speech at the inauguration of a healthcare facility in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, Odili’s hometown, Fubara said he is happy to have the support of the former Governor.

Odili’s backing, he said, has triggered “people high blood pressure”, adding that his detractors are now “restless, granting all sorts of media interviews.”

His words: “I’ve said it before, and I’m saying it again. It doesn’t matter the number of people that stand with you. Even if you’re standing alone, no matter the side you’re standing on, provided you are standing on the right side, maintain your stand. We are happy to stand with him (Odili).

“We are also happy that he is standing with us. Even his person alone is giving people high blood pressure. They are restless, granting all sorts of media interviews. Why are they doing it? It is because the people that matter, the people that have what they claimed they have; integrity, are with us. That is the truth.

“So, if we have one person who has integrity and character, is it not better than having 1,000 persons with questionable character? So, we are happy to identify with him.”

Wike had criticised some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers for lacking integrity and declaring support for Fubara.

He described them as “expired politicians” who are not worthy of being called “elder statesmen”.

Election 2024: Vote for development, not money-Christians told

By Christopher Arko

Accra, Nov.18 GNA – The Rev. Dr Fred Deegbe, a former Chairman of the Christian Council, has urged Christians to vote for politicians who will develop the country and not those who will offer money at the polls.

“We must critically assess them and see whether they have something (development) to offer the people and not just because they have money…”

Rev. Deegbe said this at a National Christian Forum (NCF) 2023 organised by the Advocate for Christ Ghana (A4CG) in partnership with the Action Chapel International, Methodist Church of Ghana, Frimpong Manso Institute and some media organisations.

The forum was on the theme: “Election 2024: Assessing the impact of Political Parties and how Christians should vote”.

The forum, in its fourth year, aims to evaluate the impact of political parties and governments on various aspects of national life, including the Church, government, public and private sectors, media, citizens, and overall national development.

Rev. Deegbe urged political parties and governments to tackle corruption, which he said was permeating into all spheres of life and if not checked could affect future generations negatively.

“We are seeing corruption at the national level trickling down… if our national leaders are displaying this, and if we Church leaders are not condemning this, then what are doing?” He asked.

Rev. Julius Coomson, a Pastor at Legon Interdenominational Church, called for a campaign against corruption targeting the youth.

Prof Afua Hesse, a Paediatric Surgeon, said the fight against corruption must not be left to politicians alone.

Bawumia Parries Lies Against Him

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has deflated lies being peddled against him by his opponents ahead of the November 4, 2023 presidential primaries.

He urged delegates to disregard such false allegations by his opponents and focus on the November 4, 2023 primaries.

“We are about to make history in our party and history in this country, but unfortunately the way the results of the super delegates came, many of our opponents are confused and they are seeing looming defeat on November 4,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia indicated that his opponents have decided to adopt a new tactics by spreading lies to bring disunity and create problems between chairmen, constituency executives, polling station executives and electoral area coordinators.

“I hear different lies everyday, and that I’m giving 275 constituency chairmen GH¢100,000 and a pick-up, this is just a ridiculous lie,” he pointed out.

He debunked claims that he proposed for all siting MPs to go unopposed.

“How can I say that? The party constitution cannot even allow that because the party will be stronger when we have democracy working, so I will never say any siting MP should go unopposed, so that lie should be left alone,” he stated.

“They said further that I will not allow electoral area coordinators and polling station executives to vote in the presidential elections. How can this happen? It’s not possible for me to stop electoral area coordinators and polling station executives from voting because this was a national conference decision and I was very supportive of expanding the Electoral College to allow them to vote, and by the Grace of God they will continue to vote. What I want to do is to push for a new reform to allow polling station executives and electoral area coordinators to vote in the election of regional executives,” he explained.

He made this known at Tatale-Sanguli Constituency in the Northern Region as part of his nationwide engagement with party executives ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) November 4 presidential primaries.

On November 4, 2023, about 200,000 delegates of the New Patriotic Party will cast their vote to elect a presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.

Measured Insults To NPC –

8

Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi’s advice to politicians to be measured in the way they insult members of the National Peace Council is a wise and timely reminder of the need for civility and decorum in public discourse.

It is important for political leaders and their supporters to remember that members of the National Peace Council are respected members of society who are committed to promoting peace, reconciliation, and national unity. As such, they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, even when their views may differ from those of the politicians.

Politicians have a responsibility to lead by example and to model the kind of behavior they expect from their constituents. This means that they must refrain from using derogatory language or engaging in personal attacks when they disagree with the National Peace Council or any other institution .

Instead, they should seek to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue, focusing on the issues at hand and working towards finding common ground and solutions that benefit all members of society. By doing so, they can help to build a more peaceful, harmonious, and prosperous nation for all.

In conclusion, I agree with Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi’s call for politicians to be measured in the way they criticize the National Peace Council. Let us all strive to promote a culture of respect and civility in our public discourse, and work together towards a brighter and more peaceful future for Ghana.

More investment needed in oil sector to stop the flaring of gas

0

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), Benjamin Boakye, says there’s nothing wrong with companies in the oil and gas industry flaring gas if there’s no basis and capacity to keep such resources.

He observed that Ghana lacks the capacity to invest in extra plants to process and store excess gas hence the flaring by industry players.

Parts of the country in recent times have been experiencing intermittent power supply, but the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) blamed the power outages on Ghana’s inability to get gas from Nigeria.

The 2022 annual Public Interest Accountability Committee (PIAC) report disclosed that a total of 25.3 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas worth about $169 million was lost in the upstream petroleum sector through flaring.

The report added that the volume of gas flared in 2022 increased by 19.3 per cent compared to a volume of 21.2 bcf recorded in 2021. This constituted about 10 per cent of the total 253.56 bcf of both Associated Gas (AG) and Non-Associated Gas (NAG) produced from the three oil fields of Jubilee, Sankofa Gye-Nyame (SGN) and Tweneboa-Enyenra-Ntomme (TEN).

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show hosted by Bernard Avle, Mr. Boakye indicated that the issue of Ghana acquiring plants to process gas at the Jubilee Fields has been on the drawing board for many years.

“If there’s no commercial avenue to use gas, you cannot compel them not to flare gas for operational reasons. If there are no commercial applications for the market, they have to flare the gas. We need investment to unlock the gas, once you produce it, you need to process it. We don’t have enough capacity to construct another processing plant. We will need to build a new site to store the additional gas from TEIN and Jubilee Fields”.

“…Once we have the capacity challenge, then we need to flare. That is why we are where we are, we are flaring the gas, and we are looking for liquid fuel,” he said.

He charged the government to diversify fuel sources by implementing policies that will help the country to have processing plants in order to get excess gas for other purposes.

“I always say we are getting the policy action wrong, that is why we are where we are. If we have ENI producing in a more constant way, you could discuss with investors to help you pump in more gas by setting up a new processing plant. We have to think politically along the value change…we haven’t done the policy right,” he suggested.

How Makhadzi spend her millions: Check out her car collection, net worth and houses

0

*Ha-Mashamba, Limpopo, South Africa -* Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, the acclaimed musician and vocalist known by her stage name Makhadzi, has carved an impressive path through the music industry. Born and raised in the picturesque town of Ha-Mashamba, Limpopo, her journey from humble beginnings to becoming the “Queen of Limpopo Dance Music” is nothing short of inspiring.

Makhadzi, known for her chart-topping hits like “Matorokisi” and “Tshanda Vhuya,” was born on June 30, 1996, in Ha-Mashamba Tshivhangani. Her early life was marked by challenges, her parents’ divorce, which led to her and her two siblings being raised by their mother. She attended Mukula Integrated School, where she completed her high school education.

Her remarkable career started at the tender age of 12 when she began entertaining and collecting tips at taxi stands, showcasing her natural flair for performing. Subsequently, she joined the Makirikiri Musical Group as a dancer, providing her with valuable exposure to diverse audiences and cultures. It was during this period that her love for the arts blossomed, inspiring her to pursue a career in music.

Makhadzi’s breakthrough came when a studio manager discovered her raw talent and offered her the opportunity to record in a professional studio. Since releasing her debut album in 2012, she has continued to grace the music industry with her distinctive sound and infectious rhythms.

One of her crowning achievements came in the form of the 2020 album “Kokovha,” which featured chart-topping singles such as “Amadoda,” “Mphemphe,” “Kokovha,” and “Tshikwama.” This album catapulted her to the top of the iTunes albums charts, solidifying her status as a musical force to be reckoned with.

Makhadzi’s career reached new heights in 2021 with the release of her highly anticipated album “African Queen.” This 19-song masterpiece featured collaborations with some of South Africa’s biggest music stars, Kabza De Small, Lady Du, Cassper Nyovest, Mr. Brown, DJ Dance Okashi, and Mlindo The Singer.

However, Makhadzi’s success isn’t solely measured in terms of her musical accomplishments. As of 2021, she is estimated to have a net worth of at least $400,000 (approximately R6,000,000). What sets her apart from many celebrities is her approach to wealth management. Rather than splurging on extravagant cars and luxury apparel, Makhadzi has chosen to invest a significant portion of her earnings in real estate.

Among her notable car acquisitions is the Kia Picanto, which marked her first vehicle purchase. Subsequently, she upgraded to an Audi A3, sponsored by Audi Polokwane. However, her most remarkable investments have been in real estate. Makhadzi purchased homes for both her parents and her grandmother as a gesture of gratitude for their unwavering support and love. Additionally, in August of the previous year, she acquired a property for herself.

In a world where celebrities often indulge in lavish lifestyles, Makhadzi’s story stands as a testament to the power of talent, hard work, and responsible financial planning. Her dedication to family and her wise investments in real estate serve as an inspiring example for aspiring artists and entrepreneurs alike. Makhadzi is not only a musical sensation but also a symbol of generosity and financial wisdom in the entertainment industry. With her latest album, “African Queen,” set to make waves, the “Queen of Limpopo Dance Music” continues to inspire and entertain audiences around the world.

Why Is Africa Concerned With Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws Harsher Than Corruption? – Manasseh Asks | Social

0

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni is questioning why African governments seem to be prioritising the fight against homosexuality over corruption.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb, the journalist said he finds it hard to comprehend how governments on the continent are passing harsh legislations against LGBTQ+ practices over existing laws punishing corruption.

“I don’t understand why a continent that is ravaged by pervasive corruption is passing anti-LGBTQ+ laws that are harsher than corruption. In other words, why should a politician openly steal from his people and win the next election when supporting LGBTQ+ would guarantee a defeat?” he questioned.

Currently a number of African countries have taken a strong position against LGBTQ+ practices with some passing stiff legislations against it.
In March, Uganda’s parliament passed sweeping anti-LGBTQ legislation with strict new penalties for homosexuality. The legislation proscribes “the death penalty in cases of ‘aggravated homosexuality,’ defined as sexual relations with someone below the age of 14 or above the age of 75, and for repeat offenders.”

Ghana is following suit with a bill that seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ practices.

Under the bill, persons found guilty of breaching the law stand a chance of being sentenced to jail among other forms of punishment.

The bill has received wide public acceptance but has also attracted criticisms from human rights activists and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris during her recent visit to Ghana raised concerns about the bill while describing LGBTQ+ practice as a human right.

We’ve been mandated to carry out payroll monitoring

0

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has clarified its directive to heads of public sector institutions to conduct internal payroll audits as it plans to embark on the nationwide payroll monitoring exercise.

This comes after the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) challenged the commission’s authority to carry out a payroll audit.

Speaking to Citi News, the Head of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Earl Ankrah said the payroll monitoring exercise is to deal with any discrepancies in the Single Spine salary structure.

“One important fact that is worth noting is the Fair Wages Act which put together the single spine pay policy, tasks the commission to monitor and evaluate allowances to the benefit of civil servants. So monitoring is integral in the work of the Fair Wages. For us to do these things and advise government accordingly, we should be able to carry out these monitory exercises.”

“This is not the first time we are doing this. We have been doing it with the Controller and Accountants General on a yearly basis in monitoring the salaries being paid. Just that this time, we are going on a nationwide and large scale through the Fair Wages Act”, he added.

Beginning April 1, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission will begin a nationwide payroll monitoring exercise in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

This is being done to detect and eliminate any existing fraud or anomalies.

The Commission has thus directed heads of public-sector institutions to conduct internal payroll audits.

It encourages all boards, councils, and heads of public-sector institutions to conduct their own internal payroll audits and clean up ahead of the audit.

Institutions and individuals who have received fraudulent salaries and allowances are also being advised to take steps to refund them and refrain from further fraudulent practices or face legal consequences.

Tinubu Taking Nigeria Back To Old Anthem Is His Most Profound Act — Akpabio

0

Godswill Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday, posited that the most profound act of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is taking the country back to the old national anthem.

The bill seeking to reintroduce the old national anthem was recently passed by the National Assembly, and Tinubu signed it into law on Wednesday.

Speaking during a joint session of the National Assembly, Akpabio said Nigerians would not refer to themselves just as “mere compatriots,” but as brothers.

“The senators and members have asked me to congratulate you on your first anniversary since your swearing-in to office.

“Me and my brother Tajudeen Abbas, the speaker, have explained the purpose of this visit, and this is what we call ‘Waka pass’ in Nollywood.

“Out of honour and respect for the national assembly, you said you must pass through the national assembly on your first anniversary in office.

“Of all the significant things you have done, the most profound is to take us back to our genealogy — the genealogy of our birth — that though we may belong to different tribes, though we may have different tongues, in brotherhood we stand.

“Henceforth, we won’t refer to ourselves as mere compatriots, we will refer to ourselves as brothers, and as we go into battle in the field of sports or politics, in economic endeavours, we must hail Nigeria,” Akpabio told the President who was at the National Assembly complex.

He added that the National Assembly was the best place to “commence this revolution of going back to our genealogy.”

“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” is the former national anthem of Nigeria, used from independence in 1960 until 1978.

Nigeria’s present anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” was adopted in 1978, replacing “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.

The anthem’s lyrics were written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria when it achieved independence. Frances Berda composed the music for “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” has however been signed into law as Nigeria’s new national anthem.

I got married to my husband because of his big dxck but now it’s too much for me – Lady cries out (Photos)

In the post she shared, the anonymous woman said she decided to marry a man with a big dxck because when her parents were alive, her mother always quarreled with her father for not satisfying her in bed and even threatened to divorce him.

A lady has taken to social media to share her innermost predicament concerning her marriage. However, she has reached a point where she cannot handle her husband’s big size. Her full post reads; “My name is Chidimma.

I am from Onitsha a very popular city in Anambra state in Eastern Nigeria. I am 23 years old and currently married to a Hausa man from Adamawa state in Northern Nigeria. My parents are no more as they both died in an accident while returning Aba 5 years ago.

When my parents were alive, they always quarrelled over my dad not being man enough to satisfy my mum and I always heard my mum threatening to divorce my dad and get married to another man before the unfortunate accident took them away.

After my parent’s death, I told myself that I am going to get married to a man with manhood good enough to satisfy me so I won’t have the problems my parents had in their marriage.

I met Haruna, my husband during my service year in Adamawa and we fell in love with each other but I had no intention of getting married to him not until a day I mistakenly barged into his room without knocking and I saw him unclad.

I immediately noticed his third leg and told myself I am gonna get married to him just to keep the promise I made to myself years ago.

I and Haruna, promised ourselves not to have any form of intercourse before our marriage and we kept to it strictly. After our wedding, during our honeymoon we have our first intimacy together.

It was good but I am scared because I almost lost my life during the encounter. Please readers advice me on what to do. Should I take the divorce step my mum wanted years ago?”

Ghana Water Initiative Launches SUREWATER Mineral Water To Increase Water Affordability In Ghana |

0

Ghana Water Initiative (GWI), one of the initiatives under SafeWater, a strategic business unit within Grundfos, has announced the launch of SUREWATER mineral water. This is a new packaged water aimed at increasing water security by providing affordable water to all and contributing to a more sustainable environment by reducing the use of sachet water in Ghana.

SUREWATER will provide access to clean water as a refill service to 4,000 residents in Otoase, and 150,000 residents in Nsawam as well as citizens from other parts of Accra. This is part of the larger GWI project which aims to develop commercially viable solutions to provide water services to underserved communities in Ghana and reach one million people with drinking water by 2026.

SUREWATER is packaged in large 18.9 litre containers that are designed for multiple uses and can be refilled as needed. The use of dispenser bottled water can significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste generated from single-use plastic containers, helping to protect the environment and its ecosystems, while providing clean drinking water for communities previously without access. SUREWATER costs GHS60 for the first-time purchase, to buy the bottle and the water, and GHS12 for subsequent refills, paying for the water only.

The water is produced from a centralised, supervised facility in Otoase that can produce 400 bottles per day. This facility also provides clean water to the citizens of Otoase through smart water ATMs and home connections. The bottled water is sourced from the ground and goes through a robust treatment process that includes reverse osmosis to ensure that only the best quality water reaches the consumer.

Xorlali Yao-Kuma Kpodo, GWI’s Engagement Manager commented: “We are committed to improving people’s quality of life through access to clean water, which we believe is a fundamental right. We are confident that SUREWATER will make a positive difference in Ghana, and we are eager to continue our efforts to create innovative solutions that tackle the world’s water and climate challenges.”

Grundfos established the GWI under the Grundfos SafeWater unit to design and test new approaches to water service delivery in rural communities in Ghana. As a true SDG-focused (UN Sustainable Development Goal) company focusing on both clean water and sanitation (SDG6) and taking action to combat climate change (SDG13), the GWI is invested in developing commercially viable solutions to provide water services to underserved communities. Since 2018, the GWI has established two pilot schemes. The first, launched in partnership with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) at Abomosu in 2020, provides about 8,000 people with access to clean and sustainable water through smart water ATMs and household connections. The second, launched in Otoase in 2022, includes a water bottling plant to provide SUREWATER mineral water, making clean drinking water affordable and accessible both in Otoase and beyond.

Anise Sacranie, Grundfos Water Access Director: “This project is just one of Grundfos’ many water initiatives in Africa. We recognise the pressing need for sustainable water solutions in Africa, and with the launch of SUREWATER we are aiming to make our water projects commercially viable, having a positive impact in the region both for the environment and by making clean drinking water more accessible.”

Grundfos SafeWater:

SafeWater is a strategic business unit in Grundfos (a global water technology company committed to pioneering solutions to the world’s water and climate challenges and improving the quality of life for people). SafeWater creates lasting impact by transforming underserved communities through commercially viable and sustainable smart water solutions.

SafeWater is working towards Grundfos’ ambition of reaching 300 million people in 2030 with access to drinking water. It collaborates closely with some of the world’s leading humanitarian and development aid organisations, and partners with local distributors, service partners, industries, energy service providers, private water service providers, banks and financing institutions, investors and governments. SafeWater predominately operates in East and West Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East – and often in remote locations.

Chairman Wontumi, NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman

The Ashanti Regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, was booed in the Ejisu Constituency while campaigning ahead of the by-election slated for April 30.

Optimistic of victory for the ruling party, Wontumi was met with boos and jeers as he attempted to address the crowd in Bonwire.

A group of young men expressed their displeasure, chanting, “away! away!” and declared unflinching support for former Member of Parliament for the area, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who is running as an independent candidate.

Aduomi, determined to reclaim the seat after losing to the late John Kumah in the 2020 primaries, is one of three independents vying for the position.

The NPP’s candidate, lawyer Kwabena Boateng, faces competition from Aduomi and two other independent candidates, Gabriel Agyemang Joseph and Attakorah Joseph.

Candidate of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Esther Osei of the CPP and Beatrice Boakye of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) are also vying for the slot.

However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has chosen not to contest to focus on December general elections.

NPP Mourns Akoto Osei …Party Flags Fly At Half Mast

0

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed all its party offices to fly all flags at half-mast as a result of the death former leading member, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei.

Dr. Akoto Osei, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo, died on Monday, March 20, 2023.
In a statement, the NPP extended its condolences to the family of Akoto Osei and friends.

The party described the late former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry as “a renowned statesman.”

It said he served the country “with distinction as a Minister of State at the Finance Ministry during the Kufuor administration, and later as a Minister for Monitoring and Evaluation in the first term of the Akufo-Addo administration.
The late distinguished banker, as he was known to all, embodied humility, dedication and selflessness in his service to Party and country.”

“The Party extends its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and also commiserates with the rest of the nation for the painful loss of this illustrious citizen. In honour of his memory, the NPP directs that all Party flags at the national headquarters and in the respective regions and constituencies be flown at half-mast for the next seven days.”

Dr. Akoto Osei was the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency for 16 years and the Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term, from 2017 to 2021.

Osei worked as deputy minister for Finance and Economic Planning in May 2003 and was a major economic adviser to the government.

He was later elevated to substantive Minister for Finance and Economic Planning after the death of the then Minister, Kwadwo Baah Wiredu.

He served in that role until January 6, 2009, when the government was handed over to the National Democratic Congress which had won the 2008 General Elections.

In February 2017, Osei was sworn in as Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation after being nominated by President Nana Akufo-Addo and going through the vetting process in parliament.

The ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation was a newly created Ministry to evaluate, monitor and review summits and forums in fulfilment of the government’s policies on evaluating the progress of its own ministries.

In May 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo named Anthony Akoto Osei as part of the nineteen ministers who formed his cabinet.

Kwesi Pratt reacts to CPP national executive shake up

0

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, has reacted to the recent shake-up in the Convention Peoples Party’s national executive leadership.

The CPP recently ousted all its national executive officers, replacing them with new interim council members, including notable figures like General Secretary Nana Yaa Jantuah and National Chairperson Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah.

Mr. Pratt emphasized the need for the CPP to transcend periodic leadership changes and return to its fundamental values to revive its vibrancy.

He disclosed his participation in the meeting where these changes were discussed and highlighted a warning he received about an anticipated revolution in Kumasi.

The veteran CPP member noted the party’s prolonged struggle and attributed it to a departure from the core principles that define the CPP.

Despite the leadership reshuffle, Pratt cautioned that simply replacing national executive officers might not be a sufficient solution without a fundamental shift in the party’s ideology.

“I was invited to this meeting as a founding member. When the invitation was delivered to me, I was warned that there will be a revolution in Kumasi and that I should prepare myself to participate in that revolutionary struggle. But I decided then to stay out of this revolutionary process.

“The party has not been doing well over a long period of time and everybody knows that. The reason for that is that it has not been able to return to its core values,” he stated.

He expressed optimism that the shakeup could potentially steer the party back on course, stating, “Moving national executive officers and bringing in new ones does not offer an alternative to those parties pursuing a new liberal agenda. I am also confident that this so-called revolution will lead to a situation where the party will return to its core values.”

Hosting an event in Togo was hell – Van Calebs

0

Ghanaian event organiser, Van Calebs has bemoaned the hellish experience he had during an attempt to stage a big event in Togo.

The show, dubbed “Black Friday’, was billed to serve patrons with great entertainment through music, fashion and sports.

With a host of Ghanaian and Togolese artistes lined up for the event, expectations and confidence were high within the camp of Van Calebs.

The team was also optimistic that the Palais de Congress event center was going to be filled to capacity.

But despite the presence of Ghanaian celebrities like Van Vicker, Prince David Osei, Patapaa, Chief One, Jah Phinga and a host of A-list Togolese artistes and entertainers, the auditorium was almost empty.

In view of this, the organizers had to wave the charge and make it a free for all event in order to get people into the auditorium.

Van Calebs described the development as “the worst day of my life”.

According to him, the objective of the show was to contribute to the revi of entertainment in Togo but the local promoters he trusted and paid to market the event sabotaged him.

“I had to personally start bringing in people to enjoy the show for free. The Togo people felt threatened that we were going to make it big so they sabotaged our show . I cried all night.

“Investing in entertainment in Togo is worse than entering hell fire. As a person with over a decade of experience in the event and advertising industry, this has been my worst experience so far,“ he emphasized.

Galamsey is the cause of high cost of vegetables — GAWU –

0

The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has attributed the severe shortage of vegetables and the resulting price hike to illegal mining activities in Ghana.

Mr. Edward Kareweh, the General Secretary of GAWU, stated that the areas serving as the vegetable production hub of the country are primarily the communities where galamsey is prevalent, making it challenging for farmers to cultivate crops.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), he acknowledged that natural factors such as seasonal changes contribute to the issue, but he emphasized that the repercussions of certain policies are impeding food production.

Mr. Kareweh warned that galamsey has caused soil erosion, water pollution, land destruction, heavy metal contamination, and soil infertility, and the situation could worsen without appropriate measures.

The GAWU General Secretary highlighted the extensive environmental, social, and economic impacts of galamsey on communities and the nation, urging policymakers to adopt sustainable mining practices to prevent food insecurity.

“Vegetables are delicate crops that require clean water for growth, unlike cocoa or oil palm, which do not need potable water,” he explained.

He pointed out that the water for vegetable production should be almost as clean as drinking water. However, galamsey activities have devastated most farms, and the surviving ones are at risk during the rainy season when floods inundate the vegetable fields.

Mr. Kareweh also mentioned that certain policies exacerbate the situation rather than addressing the natural gaps in food production.

“Tomatoes typically should not be as abundant as they were in January and February, but we must consider the marginal increase. Currently, unlike before, prices rise with every market day, becoming significantly more expensive, which warrants investigation,” he said.

He expressed concern over the high costs of products, land preparation, and pesticides, which are vital for vegetable production and adversely impact the agricultural sector’s development in the country.

Owner of ‘Jirapa Dubai’ murdered –

0

News reaching MyNewsGh.com indicates that the owner of the Royal Cosy Hills Hotel otherwise known as Jirapa Dubai in the Jirapa District of the Upper West Region, Mr. Eric Johnson has been murdered.

His lifeless body, according to our source, was found this morning, believed to have been shot by some unknown assailants.

Journalist, Kennedy Mornah who hails from the Upper West Region and close to the business mogul, broke the news on his Facebook page.

He wrote”Owner of Jirapa Dubai allegedly murdered? How did we get here? A very sad way indeed to begin the year”

Our source believes his murder has some chieftaincy undertones.

Mr. Eric Johnson was said to be allegedly involved in a scheme to impose a chief on the people of the Jirapa traditional area.

This did not sit well with some members of the royal family, who petitioned him, other members of the royal family and the Tendaaba, who were scheming to appoint a chief for the traditional area.

Parts of the petition said, “Mr Eric Johnson should be advised not to gamble with the peace of the Naa Angsoleh Aanaa/Naa Yelpoe Royal families.”

Adding that “They, therefore, call on all families to rise against the naked conduct by Eric Johnson which is likely to breach the stool and by extension the PARAMOUNTCY the peace that it is currently enjoying. We also wish to state that, the Jirapa Chieftaincy stool is not for sale and to be offered to the highest bidder”.

Mr. Eric Johnson, to clear his name, sued the petitioners in October 2023 at the Wa High Court; a case that is still in the court of law.

Lithium deal: NDC demands full disclosure of identities of the beneficial owners of 4.4% equity in Barari DV

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is raising concerns regarding the recently signed lithium deal between the government and Atlantic Lithium of Australia.

One of the primary issues brought forth by the NDC pertains to the beneficiary owners of the 4.4% equity in Barari DV.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, December 13, and signed by the National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the party expressed suspicions of a questionable deal favouring some close associates of the government.

“Again, it is interesting to note, that under the shareholding structure of the company, there is a 4.4% Equity in the name of “Previous Land Owners”. In the spirit of transparency, the NDC demands full disclosure of the identities of the Beneficial Owners of that 4.4% Equity and how that was arrived at. Ghanaians deserve to know who these ‘previous land owners’”

The party advised Parliament not to ratify the agreement when presented before them.

“In the face of all these pertinent issues, particularly, the non-existence of a feasibility report and a mandatory requirement for the local processing of our lithium resources, the NDC is of the view, that the Ghana-Barari Lithium deal is not in the best interest of Ghana.”

“Thus, the ratification of the Mining Lease agreement executed by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP Government, should not even arise at this stage.

“It is our considered position, that Parliament should not consider the ratification of the Lease Agreement until all these pertinent issues are satisfactorily addressed in the best interest of Ghanaians,” the statement added.

Growing pressure is mounting on the government to reconsider the lithium deal, fueled by concerns that Ghana may not be receiving fair benefits.

The discourse centres on potential resource exploitation and perceived inadequacies in the country’s gains, leading to calls for increased transparency and fairness.

Notable figures, including former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo and seasoned private legal practitioner Sam Okudzeto, have expressed their opposition to the deal.

According to the former Chief Justice, the current contract reflects a colonial and Guggisberg-type arrangement.

The $250-million project, located in Ewoyaa, Mfantseman Municipality in the Central Region, is scheduled to commence production in 2025.

The deal includes a 10% royalty and 13% free carried interest for the state, surpassing the existing 5% and 10% in other mining agreements.

Ghana has truly become an attractive tourist destination – Akufo-Addo –

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the performance of Ghana’s tourism sector, saying that the country has become a popular destination for visitors from around the world.

The president said that the government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and the Ghana Tourism Authority, had invested in improving the tourism infrastructure and services in the country, as well as support the development of the creative arts sector.

In his State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, the president said that Ghana has seen a steady increase in tourist arrivals since the successful ‘Year of Return’ campaign, which marked the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans arriving in America.

“…in the tourism sector, Ghana is finally realising her long-promised potential. Starting from the events and excitement of the Year of Return in 2019, Ghana has truly become an attractive tourist destination, with visitor numbers increasing every year,” he said.

The president also highlighted the phenomenon of ‘December in GH’, which refers to the influx of visitors who come to Ghana in December to enjoy the festive season and the various events and activities that take place across the country.

He said that ‘December in GH’ had changed the events calendar in Accra and other towns, and had created opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs.

“December in GH is now an established and increasingly attractive phenomenon, which brings visitors to our country in the month of December, and has changed the events calendar around the Christmas holiday season in Accra and many other towns,” he said.

The president also said that the government was also working on introducing tax incentives for the film industry, which he said would make Ghana a preferred destination for film production in Africa.

Group wants incumbent MP to contest unopposed

0

A pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth group in the Wa East constituency of the Upper West region is demanding that their incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw should be allowed to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the party unopposed.

According to the youth group, calling itself “YOUTH4JASAW”, the MP who is serving his first term has performed incredibly well and thus deserves the support of the rank and file of the party in his second term bid.

The Convenor of the group, Adamu Sayibu, speaking at a media briefing at Manwe explained that the constituency has seen tremendous development in the areas of health, agric, education and a considerable economic improvement within the two-year tenure of the MP.

“People of the Wa East have seen a rebranding of the constituency right at the community level to the national level. We, therefore, have no doubt that if given the opportunity, he can champion our development agenda, hence the need to renew his mandate as the parliamentary candidate for the NDC.”

In the areas of health, YOUTH4JASAW cited the construction of a clinic at Kulkpong, the conversion of a CHPS compound into a health center at Kulung, the renovation of a CHPS compound at Jeyiri and close to a 100000Ghana Cedis cash support for six health facilities at Kpaglaghi, Logu, Gudayiri, Yaala, Jumo, Halenboi-Jikpie, Sombisi, and Kandeh as major interventions that have brought unquantifiable relief to the constituency.

On education, the convenor disclosed that Dr. Godred Seidu Jasaw, since becoming the MP has paid the full school fees of over 100 tertiary students and provided financial support for 250 others amounting to GH¢105,939.

He also sponsored mock examinations for BECE candidates, donated learning materials, and renovated basic schools at Kpalworgu, Jeyiri, and Kpakpalamuni as well as donated cement and furniture to many schools in the constituency.

While commending the lecturer-turned-politician for his strides in the roads sector, water and sanitation, social events and his engagements with the constituents, the groups said “as young people who are interested in the development of the constituency, we feel obliged to appreciate the efforts of the MP. It is on this basis that YOUTH4JASAW is launching a roadshow project to showcase his achievements.”

The YOUTH4JASAW presented a cash amount of GHC 5000 to a representative of MP to be used for the purchase of the nomination forms for Dr. Godfred Jasaw.

They also pledged to pay at least half of his filing fee, saying he is a motivation to the youth in the constituency

The YOUTH4JASAW group has its members drawn from all election zones in the Wa East constituency with the aim of contributing to and supporting the incumbent MP and the NDC as a whole.

Samira Bwumia donates to Chef Failatu’s GWR cooking marathon –

0

Mrs Samira Bawumia, the wife of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, has made a donation to aid chef Failatu Abdul-Razak’s Guinness World Record longest cooking marathon by an individual attempt.

According to a Facebook post by event organiser Eric Toscar, “the donation consists of 10 bags of 25 kilos of rice, 2 gallons of 25 liters of cooking oil, 2 cartons of tin tomatoes, 2 cartons of canned mackerel, 2 cartons of tuna flakes and 2 cartons of sardines”.

Toscar also noted Mrs Bawumia “sent a delegation to do the donation on her behalf”.

Chef Failatu is eyeing a Guinness World Record currently held by Irish chef Alan Fisher who, according to a November-7-2023 GWR
announcement, achieved the feat with a staggering 119 hours and 57 minutes, unseating Nigeria’s Hilda Baci. Ms Baci, prior, had cooked for 93 hours and 11 minutes.

Chef Failatu is currently cooking at the Modern City Hotel in Tamale,
the capital of the Northern Region, having begun her attempt on
Sunday, December 31, 2023. She is to conclude today, Friday, January
5, 2024. Her aim is to cook for at least 120 hours.

So far, social media users have observed her unflagging strength and
composure, and the ease with which she has cooked a mesmerising array
of dishes, some humourously opining she could cook for a week, at
least, from the look of things.

Apart from her live audience enjoying the meals cooked by her, a
significant portion of Chef Failatu’s food as part of her GWR
cook-a-thon attempt has been shared to the needy on the streets of
Tamale.

On Facebook, yesterday, Mrs Samira Bawumia, a potential First Lady,
seeing as her husband is the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP)
flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, hailed and encouraged:
“Faila, I know you can do this, and you’ve done great so far. Keep
going strong! We’re proud of you.”

It is not the first time the humanitarian Samira Bawumia has supported
citizens embarking on a nation-glorifying adventure. Among others, in
2018, when rapper and singer-songwriter Kwesi Arthur was nominated for
a Black Entertainment Television (BET) award, she rallied support and
voted for him on social media.

Meanwhile, Chef Failatu’s GWR attempt comes right after entrepreneur
Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum ended her GWR singing marathon attempt of
126 hours and 52 minutes at the Akwaaba Village, Airport City, Accra.

According to Asantewaa, her team will present evidence of her attempt
to the Guinness World Record office in London before a verdict is
received.

While she waits, she flew with her husband to Tamale to support Chef
Failatu. She sang for her and also sat to down some of the cooked
food.

Collaboration key for Ghanaian businesses to succeed in export markets – Michael Kottoh –

0

Managing partner at international consultancy firm – Konfidants, Michael Kottoh says Ghanaian businesses need to develop professional business partnerships and be part of support groups if they want to be export-ready.

According to him, the refusal of businesses to be part of other exporting networks is likely to pose a major threat, not only to the competitiveness of Ghanaian firms but also to the country’s readiness to promote locally produced products.

Taking his turn on the on-air series of the 2024 Citi Business Festival, Michael Kottoh highlighted some areas small and medium-sized businesses should focus on in order to be export-ready.

“At the end of the day, it’s a product you want to sell, the question is whether the product is ready for export. There are many dimensions to that. You need quality products, that have been certified. The product must be doing very well in the market already.

“You need what we call market information. About the export market that could have demand for your product. The last one is the support system,”

“Lastly you need to be a part of various export networks and support systems. Some of them are GEPA, established to support exporters. If you are not a part of these associations, you may not be trade-ready.”

Stakeholders Urged To Commit Resources To Theatre Industry

0

Latif Abubakar

The Chief Executive Officer of Globe Productions, Mr. Latif Abubakar, has urged stakeholders in Ghana’s theatre industry to commit more resources to the industry.

The playwright was of the view that beyond using drama as a means of social education and change, it would also serve as a means of revenue generation and foreign exchange if given the right push.

He said, stakeholders including the government and private sector must endeavour to commit technical and financial resources to spur the industry to international heights.

Mr. Abubakar was speaking in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) ahead of this year’s World Theatre Day celebration, which was observed Monday, March 27 on the theme, “Theatre and a Culture of Peace.”

He said, the government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, must create an avenue and provide resources that would help industry players take Ghana’s theatre international.

He, however, added that theatre practitioners must equally put in their best to complement the effort of government and the private sector to place the industry on the world stage.

“It will take quality productions with the needed financial resources, and the right policies to make an impact on the word stage,” he said.

The World Theatre Day (WTD), initiated by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1961, has been celebrated annually since 1962 to foster values of theatre as an art form.

Mr. Abubakar was of the view that the theatre industry was abound with extraordinary talents who would excel when given the necessary technical and financial support.

“I dare say we have more that what it takes to put the industry on the world stage. What we are left with is the support to do so,” the playwright said.

The playwright, who had partnered with some international organisation including the Spanish Embassy, Star-Ghana, UK Aid, DANIDA and the European Union for several productions, said “the time is right again to take the theatre industry beyond the shores of Ghana.”

He said that the Ghanaian theatre had yet again become very attractive in recent times, hence the need to “show the world what we have to offer.”

Petitioners of Minority leadership reshuffle meet NDC Council of Elders

0

The Council of Elders of the opposition National Democratic Congress on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, met with some Members of Parliament who petitioned the party over the minority leadership reshuffle.

The petitioners were represented by Cletus Avoka, MP for Zebilla East, Dominic Ayine, MP for Bolgatanga East, Mohammed Murtala, MP for Tamale Central, Zanetor Rawlings, MP for Kortey Korle, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, MP for Ablekuma South, Collins Dauda, MP for Asutifi South, and Pru East MP Kwabena Donkor.

Some members of the Council of Elders who attended Tuesday’s meeting according to Citi News sources include Chairman Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, former Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, former Chief of Staff, Nana Ato Dadzie, former National Security Advisor, Larry Gbevlo Lartey, and former Information Minister, Kofi Totobi Quakyi.

The rest are former Local Government Minister, Kwamena Ahwoi, Former Education Minister, Christine Amoako Nuamah former General Secretary of the NDC, Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, former Trade Minister, Dan Abodakpi, Na Captain (Rtd) Baffour Asaase Gyimah and Mrs Aanaa Ennin, a member of the PNDC.

The Council of Elders is expected to meet the National Executives Committee (NEC) of the party before the entire minority caucus is met to iron out their differences.

It will be recalled that following last Tuesday’s changes to the leadership of the Minority side in Parliament, there have been divergent views on the issue in the media space by different stakeholders of the party, with some opposition MPs signing a petition against the move.

Some other opposition MPs have also lauded the move by the party to change the leadership of the Minority side in Parliament.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, says the party is not fragmented despite the uproar that greeted changes they made to their leadership in Parliament.

According to him, the NDC is still united adding that the changes have been welcomed by the majority of the NDC members.

“The NDC is not fragmented at all, it’s still a very united party. The truth about every decision is that every change comes along with new gainers, so you will definitely have some reactions. But the change has been welcomed by the majority of NDC members across the country, I guess even here [UK]. The reshuffle has brought some new excitement on the front of NDC,” Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said when he addressed some supporters of the party in the UK.

‘Mahama is by far the biggest threat to Ghana’s progress’ – Ntim Fordjour

0

Deputy Minister for Education, John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised National Democratic Congress flagbearer John Dramani Mahama for pledging to abolish the teacher licensure examination if he wins the 2024 general elections.

The Assin South lawmaker argues that Mahama’s promise would undermine the progress made in the policy, which he deemed a “game changer.”

In a post on X Saturday, November 18, Ntim Fordjour urged Ghanaians to reject the former president in the 2024 polls, claiming that Mahama poses the greatest threat to the country’s progress.

The Deputy Education Minister expressed the view that Mahama lacks the vision necessary for advancing the nation.

“There are leaders who establish policies and introduce new systems for the good of our people and for the development of our nation. This one lacks vision. He only cancels and threatens to cancel good policies at every opportunity. Mahama is, by far, the biggest threat to Ghana’s progress.”

“The alternative is empty! No vision, just desperate for power which was once incompetently handled,” he posted on Twitter.

Mr Mahama has vowed to discontinue the teacher’s licensure examination, arguing that the concept was not well thought through.

He expressed concerns about why students of Colleges of Education are required to take another test after undergoing several examinations before being allowed to practice.

Demand reforms in agric sector through industrial action – Prof Kanton to farmers –

0

A former Research Scientist at the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Professor Roger Kanton, has urged Ghanaian farmers to take industrial action to advocate for reforms in the agricultural sector.

He believes that a proactive approach will compel the government to address the pressing challenges confronting the agricultural sector.

Prof. Kanton made the call during ‘The Swedru Conversations,’ themed ‘Feeding Ourselves as a Nation.’

The event is an annual thought leadership program organized by the Alumni Association of the Swedru Senior High School, which took place on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Prof. Kanton encouraged farmers to consider protests as a means of drawing attention to their concerns.

He said European farmers have effectively used such a strategy to influence government policies.

Prof. Kanton emphasized the importance of farmers demanding tax exemptions on agricultural inputs, warehouses, and fertilizers.

“We need the removal of taxes on agricultural equipment. We also think that currently, we have a lot of taxes on virtually everything. If some taxes on agriculture can be waived off, it will help so that agricultural equipment can come in without being taxed, particularly fertilizers. If fertilizers are not taxed, you don’t have to put on subsidies so that we can all access them.”

“Every country in the EU is on demonstrations. I like the French farmers. When I was in school in the UK, they brought down two governments. If you don’t go their way, they throw you out. Like the Labour Unions in the UK, if you joke, they vote you out. If farmers come together and tell the minister or the president that we need this support, won’t they support it? Farmers vote, so farmers’ voices should be heard and when you put them in a cooperative along with a value chain they will work and make an impact. Farmers in all the EU countries have used tractors to block Parliament and blocked roads to the Prime Minister’s house, and it is working for them. We can also block Jubilee House, we just come with tractors and block from that side, so that nobody can move. They will listen to us. It’s not a fight, we are demanding what is ours.”

Observing Ghana’s inability to achieve self-sufficiency despite its agricultural potential, Prof. Kanton described the situation as a ‘failure’ and called for a shift towards positive defiance rather than lawlessness.

He expressed concerns over the substantial amounts spent on importing essential commodities such as rice, onions, tomatoes, maize, and other produce.

“After all these years, Ghana cannot boast of self-sufficiency, food, and nutrition security. Ghanaian farmers have comparative skills to produce rice, maize, soybeans, livestock, and poultry products so that we can be self-sufficient devoid of any outside imports. African governments have challenges, and including Ghana, we have paid lip services to support our hard-working farmers to produce everything we need. The policy on chemicals or fertilizers has failed woefully. Not lawlessness, but positive defiance,” he pointed out.

Prof. Kanton also highlighted Ghana’s status as the 90th importer of maize, stressing the need for strategic interventions to enhance domestic production.

He lamented the lack of a robust horticultural program, which has resulted in significant expenditures on imported tomatoes and onions.

“The total rice we consumed in Ghana in 2023 stands at one million, five hundred thousand metric tonnes. Annually we have been picking this from outside and approximately about 50% of them are being met locally. This means the other 50% will have to be imported, which means we have a problem. About 60% of rice consumed in Ghana is imported. That is a huge amount. This significantly increases Ghana’s vulnerability as a result of food security issues are concerned.”

Prof. Kanton called for concerted efforts to revitalize Ghana’s agricultural sector, emphasizing the importance of self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on imports.

“Ghana is the 90th importer of maize, which is not acceptable, and not very good. Tomato is another issue, we don’t even have a serious horticultural program in this country. Four hundred million dollars were used to import tomatoes, not even the paste. Which is also another ball game altogether. In 2021, we imported millions of onions. These are unacceptable figures. Why should China, Niger, and the Netherlands be exporting onions to us when we should be exporting to them?” he lamented.

Senate Extends Retirement Age Of NASS Staff To 65

0

The Nigerian Senate has passed a Bill that seeks to add five years to the retirement age of staff of the National Assembly.

If signed into law, members of the National Assembly Service would now retire at age 65 years instead of 60 years and 40 years in service instead of 35 years.

The Bill titled: “A Bill for an Act to Make Provisions for the Retirement Age of Staff of National Assembly Service and for Other Related Matters, 2024,” transmitted to the Senate from the House of Representatives for concurrence was last week stepped down by the red chamber to allow for further consultation.

In reintroducing the Bill, Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, on Thursday, said the needed consultations had been done and the Bill was now fit for passage.

Information Nigeria reports that there was tension last week Thursday among staff of the National Assembly over the planned extension of the tenure of the current Clerk, Sani Magaji Tambawal, and over 200 staff due for retirement in November this year.

Also recall that the controversial bill during the 8th and 9th Assemblies suffered setbacks after various stakeholders opposed it, arguing that the extension of the retirement age from 60 to 65 years and 35 service years to 40 years would create redundancy and stagnancy among the workers.

Bamidele, who noted that the bill seeks to make provisions for the harmonised retirement age for legislative officers of the National Assembly, said, “Considering the importance of the legislative service, the passage of the bill into law will strengthen the legislature as an arm of government.

“This bill is geared towards making provisions for the retirement age of legislative officers who serve as staff of the National Assembly. The provision does not include the following: drivers, porters, cleaners, security guards, messengers, typists, craftsmen, mechanics, clerical officers, gardeners, stewards, or cooks.”

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), in Abuja endorsed the Bill.

He was allegedly murdered by associates over a business deal gone wrong, although other theories have also surfaced.

Following his death, his customary one-week observation was organsied during which friends and family would show up and grieve for the deceased.

It is a customary first step ahead of the funeral.

During the event, the deceased widow was understandably inconsolable and video of that moment surfaced online.

Ato Forson withdraws recusal application against judge

0

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has withdrawn his application for recusal against the judge hearing his case of allegedly causing financial loss to the State.

His lawyers made this point when they were called to move his application for the Judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe to recuse herself.

The former deputy finance minister who is accused of causing financial loss to the state filed the application following the grant of a witness summons he requested from the court.

His lawyers had asked the court to issue witness summons for some of his witnesses including former health minister, Alex Segbefia, as they were facing difficulties in getting them to appear even though they had filed witness statements.

The judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe before allowing the motion to be moved, inquired why they resorted to a motion compelling the appearance of the witnesses while admonishing the lawyers of Dr. Ato Forson of the consequences of issuing an arrest warrant for the witnesses if they fail to appear.

His lawyers led by Dr. Bassit Bamba insisted that was the best option due to the difficulty in securing their appearance to testify.

But weeks after this request was granted, lawyers of Dr Ato Forson applied to the court for the judge to recuse herself on grounds that the admonishment by the judge amounted to bias. According to the lawyers, the caution by the judge was not only biased but also portrayed their witnesses as criminals who will willfully disobey a court order.

Withdrawal

However, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, holding brief for Dr. Bamba, went back to the court to withdraw the application for recusal and subsequently withdrew same.

The trial judge consequently struck out the application as withdrawn.

Dr. Ato Forson, together with Sylvester Anemana, a former Chief Director at the Ministry of Health and private businessman, Richard Jakpa, are standing trial for willfully causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the state, through a contract to purchase 200 ambulances for the Ministry of Health, among other charges.

The State led by Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame and Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atakora-Obuobisa, called five witnesses and closed its case on February 14, 2023.

The witnesses paraded by the state include the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu.

The case of the prosecution is to ascertain whether the defective vehicles were purchased in accordance with the purchase agreement approved by Parliament.

The State also wants to ascertain whether Dr. Forson was authorised by the substantive Finance Minister or any superior officer to write a letter to the Controller and Accountant General directing the establishment of irrevocable Letters of Credit (LCs) which led to the payments.

The case has been adjourned to October 2, 2023, in the new legal year.

NIC raises concern over surge in insurance fraud

0

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has expressed concern over the recent surge in fraud and its ripple effect on the insurance industry.

Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Michael Kofi Andor, emphasized that insurance fraud poses a significant threat to the insurance industry, potentially resulting in substantial losses for insurers.

“I know some of you chat people online, some of you have a chatbox, WhatsApp, AI applications and what have you, we are digitizing a lot of things and what that brings to us is a cyber risk. As we keep digitizing more things, we get exposed to the criminals who have now put down the gun and have taken the computer and are robbing with it”.

Mr. Andor thus tasked insurance companies to exercise caution in their efforts to grow and develop the insurance market, particularly as they continue to digitize their records, exposing themselves to cyber risks.

Referencing the recent internet disruptions witnessed across various networks, he revealed that everything was at a standstill due to digitization.

“When I was coming it took hours for us to be checked in at the airport the internet was down, these are the risks we face with digitization, though it’s a good thing, it comes with its risks “.

He urged insurance companies to find ways to protect their data from cyberattacks, as the governing body prepares to issue a cybersecurity directive to regulate the insurance industry.

“I know some of you are putting controls in place to protect you, but the NIC is coming up with the cybersecurity directives, these are things you’re expected to do to protect the business because if you go down, the policyholders’ interest is jeopardized “

Regarding climate change, the Acting Commissioner urged insurance companies to strategize to address potential claims resulting from climate-related issues.

“We have been told that 2023, is the hottest year in the history of the earth and it is telling on everything we do as insurance companies.”

He also raised questions about rating evolving electronic vehicles, noting their different risk dynamics compared to fuel vehicles.

“How are we going to rate this electronic vehicle? Because their risk dynamics is not the same as the petrol vehicles, they don’t use engines, when you’re rating you use the CC capacity and all of that, but the electric vehicle don’t use CC capacity, they use batteries”.

“There are two major risks that are emerging that become important for us as insurance companies, businesses and managers to take note of. These are cyber risks and climate change risks. These may sound hifalutin and quite far from you, but it is very close”.

On his part, the Northern Regional Commissioner of Insurance, Joseph Akanlagm, emphasized the importance of collaboration between insurance companies and the NIC to maximize profits.

He assured attendees of more sessions with the commissioner in the coming months.

NDC’s Hannah Bissiw who is 51yrs marries 35yr old guy

Political figure Hannah Bissiw of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) recently tied the knot for the third time.

Hannah Bissiw married her unidentified spouse in a discreet ceremony that was kept very quiet.

Bissiw decided to keep things under wraps this time after splashing her second marriage all over the place only for it to end in tears.

Other than a few images from the conventional wedding ceremony, there is not much information available about the guy she married.

In 2014, Dr. Francis Kpormego, a Jamaican physician, and Hannah Bissiw were hitched.

Her new husband surprised her with a Toyota Prado for her birthday when her party was in power, which sparked accusations of corruption and increased media attention on the wedding.

Despite all of that, the marriage ended amicably, and Bissiw now appears to be in her third union.

Congratulations to her.

Improved global outlook to benefit countries cut from international markets – IMF MD –

0

The global economy is “poised for a soft landing, but the plane is not quite yet on the ground,” International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has told G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors at the conclusion of their first meeting in São Paulo, Brazil.

She said growth is projected this year at “3.1 per cent versus 2.9 per cent when we last met.”

Ms Georgieva noted that inflation is “down faster than we expected”, adding: “In our baseline, global headline inflation is expected to fall to 5.8 per cent this year, and 4.4 per cent next year.”

“And this improved outlook also benefits developing economies that were cut off from markets for quite some time – such as Cote d’Ivoire, whose recent bond issuance was several times oversubscribed, followed by Benin and others,” she said.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva’s Statement at the Conclusion of the first Meeting of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors

March 1, 2024

Washington, DC: International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva delivered the following remarks during the first meeting of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in São Paulo, Brazil:

“I would like to thank the Government of Brazil for their warm welcome and hospitality, and Minister of Finance Fernando Haddad and Governor Roberto Campos Neto for their exceptional commitment to lead us on an ambitious G20 agenda to build a more equitable, prosperous, sustainable, and cooperative future, with a strong international monetary system as its foundation.

Brazil’s economy continues to perform well, and its policy reforms should help lift growth prospects and the living standards of Brazilians. I applaud the authorities’ plans to steer Brazil’s transformation to a sustainable, inclusive, and green economy. I also want to recognize Brazil as a global leader when it comes to financial innovation.

I came into these meetings with a clear message: with the recent improvement to the global-near term outlook, G20 policymakers have an opportunity to rebuild policy momentum and shift their focus to tackling medium-term economic challenges.”

Global outlook, risks and policy challenges

“Globally, we are poised for a soft landing, but the plane is not quite yet on the ground. Growth is projected this year at 3.1 percent versus 2.9 percent when we last met. Inflation is down faster than we expected. In our baseline, global headline inflation is expected to fall to 5.8 percent this year, and 4.4 percent next year. And this improved outlook also benefits developing economies that were cut off from markets for quite some time – such as Cote D’Ivoire, whose recent bond issuance was several times oversubscribed, followed by Benin and others.

This is encouraging, and yet we need to be conscious of three things.

First, the risks on the downside. One is a more persistent inflation because of new price spikes that could result from geopolitical shocks and other supply disruptions – such as climate events – or from looser financial conditions, which could slow down the normalization of monetary policy. We can also have an upside risk, in which inflation falls even faster than expected. And that, of course, would be great for all of us.

Second, we should not be complacent because growth is still weak: 3 per cent year after year, against an average of 3.8 per cent in the pre-COVID decade. And even worse, in many places it is because of low productivity. Countries that are doing well, like the United States and some emerging market countries, have realized productivity gains.

And third, we must be mindful that if interest rates are to remain higher for longer, financial sector risks could go up. So, they require careful monitoring. We must be vigilant for early signs of stress and systematically address vulnerabilities, especially in non-banking financial institutions.”

For policymakers, 2024 is shaping up to be a tricky year. Central banks need finish the job on inflation by calibrating carefully whether they cut and how fast they cut, against the risk of being too slow and affecting growth negatively. Government authorities have to pursue fiscal consolidation to rebuild buffers and prepare for shocks that may still come.

We advise for medium-term fiscal plans to gradually help make this consolidation. When we look around the world, countries are in different places on monetary and fiscal policy, so authorities cannot simply take a cue from somebody else. We need to rely on national data to inform the appropriate policy stance. And many officials rightly spoke at this meeting about structural reforms, which they take on for productivity gains, for growth improvements, and for improvements in standards of living.

Finally, on Artificial Intelligence (AI), IMF staff has produced a very interesting country index on AI preparedness that can help inform governments’ efforts in dealing with the digital transition.”

A Financial Sector for the 21st Century

“Innovations are accelerating, and they shape payments and finance. They generate both benefits and risks. We have to be careful to concentrate on both and not only be focused on the risks.

Nonetheless, for us at the Fund, it is the risks to macro-financial stability that legitimately take a priority. But we also look into two things: how financial innovations can contribute to financial inclusion, and through it to growth, and how to serve as a transmission line between ‘the best and the rest’. We have a universal membership, and we have the responsibility to not let countries fall behind. Our attention is in three areas:

First, CBDCs. They have the potential to improve accessibility. They also have the potential to improve the stability and efficiency of payments, both domestically and across borders. And this potential is already being realized. But we must secure interoperability upfront, not try to catch up later. And we do need to be aware of the risks of bank dis-intermediation domestically, and capital outflows internationally.

At the Fund, our contribution is to aggregate experiences. We have produced a CBDC handbook to help share knowledge and lessons. It is a living document, and we count on your help to make it as useful to the membership as possible.

Second is the growth of crypto assets. They do require a comprehensive policy and regulatory response. And we’ve heard also about the risks of criminal misuse. We will continue to support countries on implementing the roadmap that was endorsed by the G20. The FSB and standard-setting bodies are working on it. What we try to do is be a transmission line to about 150 supervisors across four regions through outreach events and technical assistance.

And finally, we are very interested in how to move forward on cross-border payments and financial market innovations, including tokenization of assets. Our work here is about making existing payment systems work as well as they possibly can. And, on that, we collaborate closely with the World Bank. But in parallel, we see value in new classes of cross-border platforms for payments and the exchange of financial assets in token form. We recognize that the payment infrastructure has to be compatible with all those new assets, so we can actually make best use of it. The work is enormous, and we have no time to waste.”

Inequality

“At the IMF, we focus on sound macroeconomic fundamentals, so that economies can grow and provide more opportunities to their people. But we also look at inequality because it undermines social cohesion, and it also affects productivity and growth. In that regard, we have learned important lessons on the role of social safety nets. We hope to recast them into social safety ropes; to help people help themselves. On the role of labour markets and financial inclusion, we pay particular attention to participation of women in the labour force. We also have a policy that establishes a floor for social spending in our programs, so that resources for education and health, which are key social objectives, can be protected.

I want to also stress the importance of an integrated world economy because we know trade is good for all countries, but it is particularly good for low-income countries. At the Fund, we take to heart what opportunities there are that we need to capture. Obviously, artificial intelligence is an opportunity. But it is also a risk to increased inequality if it’s not handled right.

Finally, data. Better data means better policies. We play a big role in the G20 Data Gaps Initiative, including on this topic – how to provide comprehensive data to address inequality.”

Financing for development and debt

“I thank the Presidency for highlighting financing for development as the challenge of our time. Unfortunately, we are losing ground rather than gaining. We need an extraordinary package of domestic actions and external support.

On the domestic policy front, we at the IMF work in strong partnership with the World Bank and other organizations to help our members put in place sound macroeconomic fundamentals. This allows them to achieve higher growth rates and improve standards of living. We are taking to heart the significance of domestic resource mobilization, the most important source of financial capacity of countries to help their people.

Together with the World Bank, we have started a large domestic resource mobilization initiative, in which we will help our members comprehensively address how to increase resources in the public purse, how to use this money most effectively, how to give the financial sector confidence so that savings can turn into productive investment, and how to build domestic capital markets to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of every penny.

With respect to external support, our role is to be there for members who need balance of payments support, and I want to thank members of the G20 for helping to make the IMF financially stronger by supporting a 50 per cent quota increase at the Annual Meetings in Marrakech. We now need our member countries to finalize domestic procedures to bring it into effect.

With the contributions to our Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT) subsidy and loan accounts, we have met our first-stage fundraising goal in Marrakech. And the $40 billion pledged for the Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST) is now delivering 17 programs in one short year. We are working very effectively with the multilateral development banks – the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the other development institutions – because we recognize that only together, we can make a stronger impact.

Finally, on debt, as we heard from many, high debt service is a problem for a number of highly vulnerable countries, constraining resources that could go to development. I applaud the efforts that have been put in so far by G20 members to make the Common Framework deliver. We now have four countries undertaking debt restructuring, each one faster than the previous one.

I am committed to help advance the work on addressing debt vulnerabilities through the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable so that we better address issues like timeliness, predictability, and comparability of treatment. Together we can make the difference.”

48 illegal miners trapped in AngloGold mine shaft arrested

0

The police have arrested 48 illegal miners following their emergence from a mine shaft belonging to AngloGold Ashanti on Tuesday afternoon.

These individuals were part of a group of 300 illegal miners who had entered the mine shaft in search of gold deposits but became trapped in one of the shafts.

The police and military were deployed at the main exit of the shaft and instructed the miners to come out voluntarily. Subsequently, they were arrested and taken to a nearby police station.

In response to the arrests, a gathering of youth and relatives of the miners assembled at the Obuasi East District Assembly, demanding the release of the detainees.

The tense situation led to some individuals expressing their frustration by damaging the windows of a vehicle used to transport the arrested miners to the police station.

A significant number of miners have chosen to remain underground out of fear of being arrested.

On Tuesday, AngloGold Ashanti refuted suggestions that the over 300 illegal miners trapped in one of the company’s mine shafts were confined and unable to exit.

In a statement from the mining firm, it was explained that the trapped miners have not been confined and can exit on foot via the existing ramp from the mine.

“Unauthorized persons underground are able to exit on foot, using the existing ramp through the main access of this mining area. No person underground has been confined in any way, and the main exit ramp from the mine remains open.

“Obuasi Gold Mine’s management team has notified the relevant authorities and public security services and is working closely with them.”

Amin Adam was with us during most difficult times; support him – Ofori-Atta tells MoF staff –

0

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has expressed confidence in his successor, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, urging the Ministry of Finance staff to support him in his new role.

In a heartfelt letter of gratitude issued on Wednesday, February 14, and seen by Myjoyonline.com, Ofori-Atta thanked the staff for their tireless service and commitment to excellence during his tenure.

He encouraged them to uphold professionalism, ethics, efficiency, and responsiveness, emphasising his vision for a Ghana Beyond Aid.

Describing Dr. Amin Adam as a smart, humble, and inclusive leader, Ofori-Atta stressed the importance of collective effort to ensure a successful tenure for the new appointee.

“The future is here with us as we are blessed with a new leader, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, who replaced the venerable Charles Adu Boahen, and has been with us through some of the most difficult times. Let us all circle the wagons and ensure a blazing success for his stewardship.

“We all know him as a smart, humble and inclusive leader. Let me state with all humility that nothing would honour me and the ‘Office of the Minister’ more than for you to work with renewed diligence to guide Hon. Amin and our nation to the successful execution of the IMF-ECF programme to promote economic growth and transformation.

“Once again, I thank you for your tireless service and commitment to excellence. It has been my utmost honour and a rare privilege to serve alongside each, and every one of you. I pray that you continue to be resolute, dedicated, unwavering and committed to the work of the Republic and care for the finances of the State.”

President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, February 14, appointed Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam as the new Finance Minister, replacing Ken Ofori-Atta, who served in the position for seven years.

The announcement came as part of the latest ministerial reshuffle released by President Akufo-Addo on February 14.

Despite facing significant challenges and calls for his dismissal from some members of Ghana’s Parliament, Ken Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister.

On October 25, 2022, around 80 NPP MPs demanded Ofori-Atta’s resignation due to the country’s struggling economy. Similar calls were echoed by the NDC parliamentary caucus in February 2023.

However, President Akufo-Addo rejected these calls for resignation, urging Parliament to wait until discussions with the IMF were concluded.

Electoral Commission shows cost-saving measures, disproving IMANI’s claims of wasteful spending –

0

Contrary to IMANI-Africa’s claims of engaging in wasteful procurement expenditure, the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission has proven that it saved the state millions of dollars.

In a statement dated April 26, 2024, and signed by Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of the Electoral Commission in charge of Monitoring and Evaluation, he noted that Bright Simons of IMANI and his CSO have persistently attempted to publish misinformation about the Commission’s current leadership.

According to him, a recent claim by Mr. Simons that the current administration engaged in wasteful expenditure by deciding to purchase a new set of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) in 2020 instead of going through a refurbishment of old BVDs started in 2018 is pure falsehood.

Setting the records on the matter straight, Mr Tetteh noted that the previous administration of the Commission in 2018 started processes for the refurbishment of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) and Biometric Voters Registration Kits (BVRs), a Data Centre and Security enhancements for a total cost of $56 million.

He noted that the project was purposefully geared towards the conduct of the 2018 referendum and District Level Elections, after which the Commission intended to procure new devices.

However, upon assumption of office, the current administration saw it prudent to cancel the process and opt for a minimal maintenance arrangement.

“In June 2018, the previous administration of the Commission had budgeted and received approval to invest US$56 million for the refurbishment of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) and Biometric Voters Registration Kits (BVRs), a Data Centre and Security enhancements under the voter registration and voter verification projects.

“The contract was specifically geared towards the conduct of the 2018 referendum and District Level Elections (DLE). The Voter registration project included the refurbishment of 1.670 BVR kits and the procurement of 1,000 new BVDs, while the Voter Verification Project included the refurbishment of 46,200 BVDs and the acquisition of 10,000 new BVDs.

“However, the current administration of the Commission made a strategic decision to cancel the contract for the total refurbishment and the procurement of new BVDs, opting for a minimal maintenance arrangement.

“In 2020, based on the experience with the equipment in the 2019 DLE, the current Commission applied and received approval from the PPA to acquire new BVDs, BVRs, a Data Centre and a Data Recovery Centre,” the statement said.

Comparing details of the cancelled 2018 procurement budget to the procurement done by the Commission in 2020, Mr Tetteh noted that the current administration saved the state money by strategically opting to buy new equipment.

“For the 74,500 new BVDs and 8,500 new BVRs, the current administration of the Commission saved this country an amount of US$57.918,270 compared to the prices at which the previous administration was going to pay for new BVDs and BVRs. Please take note that the cost of refurbishing one BVR kit, as approved in 2018, was $3,565, while the cost of a new BVR Kit purchased by the current administration in 2020 was $3,423.38. As Ghanaians, would we have preferred to refurbish old BVRs at a unit cost higher than a new one?

“It is also worth noting that the previous Commission earmarked USS15 million for the data centre and biometric system upgrade, whereas the current administration spent USS6,161,869.69 for a new data centre, a new data recovery centre and related services, saving the country US$9 million,” the Commission said.

Thus, the Commission rejected IMANI’s claims that it spent $150 million on the new BVDs and BVRs.

According to the Commission, the new administration spent US$68,661,912.67 on 74,500 BVDs, 8,500 BVRs, and a new data and data recovery centre.

In another release, Mr Tetteh vehemently refuted Bright Simons’ claims that the Commission had engaged in a secret venture of sneaking out the obsolete devices for recycling at a loss to the State.

According to the Commission, processes leading to the auctioning and recycling of devices were conducted transparently and legally.

“The Commission categorically rejects the allegation of sneaking out thousands of devices for recycling at a loss to the State. Such statements are not only false but are designed to mislead the public and cause disaffection for the institution and its leadership.

“As indicated earlier, the Original Equipment Manufacturers and the Managers of the Commission’s biometric infrastructure, HSB Identification BV and STL, respectively, informed the former Commission in writing about the obsolete nature of the Commission’s Biometric infrastructure.

“They indicated that the biometric equipment and other equipment in the Data Centre had reached the End of Life- meaning they could no longer be serviced as parts were no longer available.

“Indeed, HSB Identification BV., in a letter to the Commission, distanced itself from the planned repairs of the BVRs. Based on these reports and following our experience with the equipment in the 2019 District Level Election (DLE), this Commission, in consultation with relevant agencies and in compliance with legal procedures, auctioned the obsolete 2012 equipment.

The EC said, “The auction was conducted transparently, and all legal procedures were strictly adhered to. The proceeds from the auction were duly deposited in the Consolidated Fund.”

Police Assure Of Maximum Security As IPOB Declares May 30 Sit-At-Home

Following the announcement of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to declare May 30, 2024, as a sit-at-home day across the South-East, the Police has reacted.

Information Nigeria had reported that the pro-Biafran group said the day is set aside annually to celebrate their men and women who died in the Civil War between 1967 and 1970 and beyond.

Reacting, the Anambra State Police Command said it would protect residents.

The Command’s Spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a chat with Punch said, “The police are committed to making sure that residents are protected wherever they are and as they go about their normal businesses, they should rest assured that they will have adequate security.”

Also reacting, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 13 Command, Josephine Ihunwo, said, “We are not yet aware of the development but residents are assured of adequate security as they go about their normal businesses everyday without any fear or intimidation by any group.”

The Zone 13 Police Command in Ukpo-Dinukofia, Anambra State controls police formations in Anambra, Enugu and some parts of Ebonyi State.

IPOB, in a press statement signed by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, on Thursday, said, “The global family of IPOB declares Thursday, May 30, 2024, a sit-at-home day in Biafra land for all Biafrans, friends of Biafra, lovers of freedom, and all residents in Biafra land.

“Annually, we celebrate May 30 as our heroes and heroines day, when we remember the men and women who died that we may live, before, during, and after the war against Biafrans between 1967 and 1970 and beyond, and even until now.

“To honour our heroes and heroines, Biafrans are asked to observe this one-day sit-at-home in reverence to the spirits of our departed heroes who fought for us to be alive today.

“Every Biafran in Biafra territory is expected to sit at home on this day and reflect on the danger of the forced unity called Nigeria that has taken millions of lives of Biafrans.

“Other Biafrans outside Biafra territory are also encouraged to honour our heroes by observing the sit-at-home if possible or by limiting their activities on this day.”

Rally round new NPP leader after primaries – Stephen Ntim to members

0

Mr Stephen Ntim, the National Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made a clarion call on the entire membership of the NPP to rally around whoever will emerge as the Party’s new leader and flagbearer after the presidential primaries on Saturday, 4 November 2023.

The NPP National Chairman pointed out that unwavering support for the party’s new leader after the internal poll is the surest way for the party to achieve its set goal of “breaking the 8” to win a third successive term in office in the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Addressing the media at a joint press conference held by the National Executive Committee and Council of Elders of the NPP at the Alisa Hotel on Thursday, 2 November 2023, Mr. Stephen Ntim said “It is evident that what stands in the way of the [NPP] to a third consecutive electoral victory is ourselves, our actions, and our inactions”.

“The way forward is for us to deal decisively with the widespread indiscipline, apathy, and general indifference in the Party. I want to call specifically on the four flagbearer aspirants who are all capable of leading the NPP to commit to working as a team to ensure victory, even if they fail to win on Saturday.

“Rallying behind the eventual winner on Saturday is a necessary condition for our success in 2024 because it has the effect of promoting unity and healing the wounds that the internal contest has opened up. We must reconnect with our passion to serve, which was the driving force behind the exploits of our forebears,” the NPP National Chairman stated.

“We must undertake to let go of personal differences and disagreements. In other words, we must each prioritize the larger interest of the Party ahead of our hurts and egos. To emerge from Saturday united and poised for victory, I must be able to say to myself that the battle ahead is not about me, though I am the National Chairman of the Party.

“We must each look at the bigger picture, bearing in mind that the grand pursuit of the New Patriotic Party is generational, and our task is to build on the gains we have inherited. Our singular mandate is to add on, not to take away or undermine our inheritance,” Mr Ntim further admonished.

He further stressed that “As Chairman, working with the Steering Committee, we will take a strong view against indiscipline in the Party and related actions or inactions with the propensity to undermine our generational mandate and the goal of winning the elections in 2024.”.

Economic recovery

Touching on efforts the Akufo-Addo government is putting in place to revive the economy, knowing that the state of the economy will play an essential role in the 2024 election campaign, Mr. Ntim said the steps taken by the government are yielding positive results, and it is his hope that the economic recovery will continue to give the party a firm footing to campaign on.

“The 2024 general elections will be fought on many fronts, especially the economy. But we know we will win the battle on the economy because our capacity, commitment, and record show that we have what it takes to regenerate the economy from the ruins of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war that threw the entire global economy out of balance.

“We know the challenges Ghanaians have endured from the second quarter of 2022, where due to the twin factors of COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, inflation began to skyrocket, the performance of the cedi started deteriorating, and productivity slowed. It led to the President making the difficult but inevitable decision for Ghana to go to the IMF for a balance of payment support,” Stephen Ntim said.

“During this challenging period, many countries in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere sought help from the IMF for the same reason Ghana applied. The President has acknowledged the present economic difficulties in the country and has committed every effort of his government to improve conditions for Ghanaians.

“As we speak, the economy has taken a turn for good. Inflation, which rose to a high of 54.1 in December 2022, is declining quickly (38.1% as of October 2023). The cedi has primarily stabilized, and productivity is increasing by 3.2 percent at the close of the second quarter of 2023,” he added.

Presidential primaries

The NPP will, on Saturday, 4 November 2023, elect its flagbearer for the December 2024 general elections.

From 2007 and for the last 16 years, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been the leader of the NPP.

On Saturday, the party will have the opportunity to elect not only its flagbearer for the 2024 presidential elections but also a new leader to take over from President Akufo-Addo.

Four persons are aspiring for the position. They include the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Kennedy Agyapong, the sitting Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region and lastly, Francis Addai Nimoh, the former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

Toflokpo residents give govt 14-day ultimatum to call Electrochem management to order –

0

Some aggrieved residents of Toflokpo in Ada have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, demanding intervention in the clash between the community members and salt mining firm, Electrochem Ghana Limited.

The aggrieved residents said they want the government to address their concerns or they are willing to take the law into their own hands.

The call on the government for intervention stems from an incident on Monday, November 6, 2023, where clashes reportedly occurred between salt miners from Toflokpo and some staff of Electrochem Ghana Limited, which resulted in the untimely death of a 47-year-old individual, Koletey Wormenor.

Fearing for their safety and well-being after the incident, residents have given the government a 14-day ultimatum to address the escalating tensions. Abraham Avuma, the Public Relations Officer for the Ada Songor Lagoon Association, said in an interview with Joy News, monitored by GhanaWeb, that the residents do not seek the expulsion of Electrochem, but rather desire the company to confine its activities to the Songor salt project.

“We are not asking Electrochem to pack out; we are saying that they should remain as a Songor salt project. We don’t need him to work any further, so that we will have the place. But when you continue to use the police and try to cease our work equipment, we are not going to agree. So, we want the government to make sure the Electrochem remains as a Songor salt project, so that we can be able to have discussions in relation to the project,” he stated.

The conflict, as explained by Abraham Avuma, came about as the management of Electrochem wanted to take over a vast expanse of the Songor Lagoon, reportedly spanning more than 42,000 acres.

This, according to the community members, will affect their source of livelihood.

“Our demand is for Electrochem to remain at the Songor stop only, it shouldn’t move further to any other line because the Songor salt project is a government concession and all the residents in Ada are aware. Any government that comes appoints their management and then they take over at the concession. They have always been there and we never had a problem with any of them.

“Now as we are speaking, Electrochem Ghana Limited claims that all the land of the Songor Lagoon, over 42, 000 acre of land, has been given to him and he is preventing all Ada residents from entering any portion of the land and that is the reason why when he came, instead of him to use legitimate means, he is always adding land guards,” he stated.

This is an overthrow – Minority on Kwaku Kwarteng’s reassignment from Finance Committee

0

The Minority caucus in Parliament has described the reassignment of Obuasi West MP, Kwaku Kwarteng, as Chairman of the Finance Committee as an “overthrow” orchestrated by the Majority leadership.

This follows the unexpected announcement by Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin about changes in the majority leadership, which came as a surprise to some Majority MPs.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 28, the Majority Leader said Kwaku Kwarteng had been moved from the Finance Committee to chair the new Economy Committee.

He justified the move by highlighting Mr Kwarteng’s capability to address economic matters and challenge the opposition’s representative on economic issues.

“We are challenging you to come up with your spokesperson on the economy. You have not said so officially, but we are going to make sure we have a spokesperson on the economy to challenge your Adonko. Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng is going to face him directly on the economy,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated.

In response, the Minority in Parliament has criticised the shake-up.

Speaking on the floor of the House on Friday, June 28, the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, argued that the move was unconstitutional, accusing the Majority Leader of usurping the Speaker of Parliament’s power to make such changes.

“He’s the Majority Leader, and he should know better not to usurp the power of the Speaker, the Chairman of the Committee of Selection and to come here to simply announce without the knowledge of the Speaker.

“..The existing Chairman of the Finance Committee without the knowledge of the Speaker, without a meeting of the Committee of Selection – the Majority Leader will come to this House to simply announce that he has overthrown him and made changes,” Mr Buah lamented.

Other vital personalities present were Hon. Chief Hamilton Biney, Mr. Awudu Sannie, and Yayra Koku.

Chapter Chairman Conrad Dumbah took his turn to plead with the newly elected branch executives to hold fast to their duties and ensure that many more members are attracted to the branch to expand the membership.

Party politics thrives on the strength of its numbers, and therefore, we all need to conduct ourselves in such a manner that would attract new members and retain new members to contribute physically and financially to ensure success in the upcoming elections, he added.

Alhaji Alhassan Mbalba used the occasion to urge members of the chapter to endeavour to travel back to Ghana and participate in the upcoming Limited Voter Registration, which is scheduled for 7th-27th May this year, and also to travel to Ghana to vote massively for President John Mahama and NDC parliamentary candidates on 7th December 2024 to ensure a resounding victory for President John Mahama and NDC’s parliamentary majority, so that together we can build the Ghana we all want.

All the guest speakers took turns encouraging the newly elected executives to work hard to bring the NDC ultimate glory in December 2024. On his part, Chief Hamilton Biney, the former Deputy National Organiser of the NDC, congratulated the new executives of the branch on their elections.

He also seized the opportunity to admonish all members to work cordially for victory in the upcoming general election in December 2024.

He also stressed the point that the NDC needed to focus on the loftier objective of the party for a resounding victory in the upcoming general elections in Ghana. At the latter stages of widely accepted to be a successful programme, the newly elected executives were sworn in to assume duty as substantive officers of the West London Branch of the NDC.

Administering the oath of office, the deputy Chapter Secretary, Mrs. Isabella Peace Dietson lauded the branch for electing more women to executive positions and advised the executives to work closely together to ensure the NDC and John Mahama’s victory in the December 7th general election.

In his acceptance speech of the newly sworn Chairman of the branch, Mr. Francis Torto dedicated the day to the memory of his late father, Mr. I T Torto, who was the Greater Accra Regional Minister under the Third Republic (President Liman’s administration) and founding member and first Chairman of the NDC UK/Ireland Chapter, Mr Torto expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed in diverse ways to ensure the formation of the NDC West London branch and admonished his colleagues and members to continue working relentlessly for the best of the branch, the Chapter and the NDC as a whole.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Kofi Kwakye, Chairman of the occasion and former Chairman of the NDC UK/Ireland Chapter, explained that the plan to demarcate London into four branches started over a decade ago, in 2013, under his administration.

He acknowledged all those who contributed in diverse ways over the years to ensure the inauguration of the 4th NDC branch in the Greater London area. Mr. Kwakye reiterated the importance of continuity of initiatives and ideas by successive Chapter administrations.

Chapter Zongo Caucus Coordinator Issaka Sanni offered the Muslim closing prayers to conclude the event successfully and fruitfully.

The NDC UK/Ireland Chapter looks forward to the contributions of the West London branch and the continued growth of the party’s influence in fostering a brighter political future.

He said, “This doesn’t make any sense. I think the guy should have been arrested.

“Those individuals who feel the heat and fear of the pranks should be reporting the pranksters as many of their pranks are criminals, immoral, and evil.”

Cultural practices that undermine children’s rights, exploit them should not be tolerated – CRI –

0

Child Rights International, a children’s advocacy group, says its interest in the alleged marriage of a 16-year-old girl to Gborbu Wulomor, the 63-year-old traditional priest, is to seek justice and protection for the minor.

The group faced criticism for allegedly undermining a priest, but their primary goal was to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter.

According to the Executive Director of CRI, Bright Appiah, the laws of Ghana are against early or child marriages, and so “when you violate that, you are punished for it.”

He explained that the laws are also there to protect the abuse of fundamental rights of people, especially children and that they must be respected even in the traditional context.

“People at a point felt others were undermining the culture of the Nungua people, but in all our discussions, we’ve never made mention of what their tradition is because I have no idea of their tradition for me even to talk about it. If I had an understanding, I would appreciate it better. I did not place emphasis on the cultural practices that they do, but once it involves a child and the child is below the age of 18 years, we would have an interest.”

He argued that Ghana is a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and so we have imposed a responsibility on ourselves to protect children, and when there are cultural practices that endanger the life of a child, they should be prohibited.

Speaking in an interview with Dr. Ren on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM UK, he said “These provisions were infused into our Child Rights laws; we are not banning culture totally, but the law maintains that any cultural practices that violate the rights of the child, exploit them, or endanger them should be prohibited.”

Mr. Appiah argued that tradition and law should not be separated, as both systems acknowledge people’s existence.

He emphasized that any cultural practices that undermine children’s rights, exploit them, and deprive them of education and protection should not be tolerated.

New survey tips NAPO as preferred running mate for Dr. Bawumia

0

A recent survey released by Research Trust Limited, a research entity affiliated with pro-NPP think tank Danquah Institute (DI), reveals that 70% of respondents prefer Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the ideal running mate to partner with New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 general elections.

The survey gathered views from NPP executives at polling stations, constituency, regional, and national levels across the 16 regions.

A significant finding of the study, which focused on regional preferences of NPP executives for a potential running mate, showed that about nine in 10 executives (92%) preferred the running mate to come from the Ashanti Region.

When asked who in the Ashanti Region could best support the flagbearer as a running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh topped the list with 70% of the responses.

7. Joseph Osei Owusu: 0.6%
8. Asamoah Boateng: 0.4%
9. Prof. Mrs. Rita. Akosua Dickson: 0.4%

Reasons for the choice included:

1. Resourcefulness
2. Ability to face the NDC boot-for-boot
3. Understanding grassroots politics
4. Good leadership skills
5. Generosity and kindness
6. Known party faithful
7. Popularity and marketability

Dr. Opoku Prempeh scored high marks across all indicators, including popularity and marketability (81%), ability to face the NDC boot-for-boot (78%), understanding of grassroots politics (78%), and being a known party faithful (71%).

Methodology

The survey report stated that data was collected over a three-week period (May 6 – May 26, 2024), during the flagbearer’s tour of the country.

“A total of 140 constituencies out of the 275 were sampled for the study, representing about 52% of all constituencies in Ghana.”

“The number of sampled constituencies within a region was proportional to the total number of constituencies in that region, though some consideration was made for regions where the NPP had more votes in the 2016 and 2020 general elections.”

“That is, more constituencies were sampled in the Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra and Western relative to regions such as the North East and Ahafo regions for example.”

“In each sampled constituency, the survey aimed at interviewing four constituency executives, giving a total of 560 constituency-level data. In addition, four random polling stations within the constituency were sampled. In each sampled polling station, a total of three NPP polling station executives were randomly selected and interviewed.”

“This gave a total of 720 polling station-level interviews. An additional 4 first-time voters (2 male and 2 female where possible) in each selected polling station were sampled to respond to the questions. That is, data from 960 first-time voters were collected as part of this survey. The total sample for our analysis was 2, 240 respondents.”

Ashanti Region: ECG Customers Lament Persistent Prepaid Challenges | Social

0

Some residents in parts of Kumasi are lamenting the unavailability of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) prepaid credit.

The power consumers, some of whom are business owners have not been able to recharge their prepaid metres over the last few days due to network failure.

Aisha, a resident of Sawaba said anxiety began to set in after attempts to reload her card failed.

“I have been coming to check at this sales point for the past four days and they always tell me the network has not been restored. Now I have deposited all my food items to a neighbour’s fridge, else they will go bad, also my phone is currently off and I have to give it to a friend to charge it for me,” said the mother of three.

Mary also joins affected customers at Buokrom, Santasi, Asawase, and Asokore Mampong for an intervention.

“We have money to buy [the prepaid credit], but it is not available. We plead with the ECG for an intervention,” she added.

But the power distributor says it is still working to resolve the challenge. Ashanti regional director of the ECG, ING. David Boadi Asamoah however did not give any timelines.

“The servers are in Accra, so anytime there is a communication gap from Accra to the Ashanti Region, because of the distance, we go off. So we are trying to have a mirror server in Ashanti so that we use it during the day, and then at night, we use the main one. So for now we will be having these little challenges.

“We are even considering having another network outside the one we are using now, to be able to help us serve our customers better. So I believe that from the things that we have put in place, we should be able to come out of this in a very short time. I won’t be able to give a specific time because we are importing the system, so when the system arrives, we will be able to tell you the specific timeline.”

Aggrieved butchers reject increment of slaughter fees, threaten street protest

0

Aggrieved butchers at the Wenchi abattoir in the Bono Region have vehemently rejected the upward adjustment of slaughter fees due to the worsened unsanitary condition at the Wenchi slaughterhouse.

The visibly angry butchers insisted that until the Wenchi Municipal Assembly put the facility into good condition, there was no way they would pay the fees, which had increased from GHC5 to GHC20 for cattle slaughter.

They also threatened a street protest to register their displeasure over the new fees and the deplorable condition of the abattoir.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the slaughterhouse at Boadan in the Wenchi municipality, the butchers said they made persistent appeals and follow ups to the Municipal Assembly to put the abattoir in good condition, but the assembly seemed unconcerned.

The situation at the slaughter house could lead to the outbreak of infections and communicable diseases if something is not done immediately.

During a visit, the GNA noticed the butchers slaughtered and dressed the animals on the floor in an unhygienic condition.

In 2021, the GNA carried a similar story on the bad state of the abattoir, but the situation seemed worsened as the condition at the abattoir looked poor, unhygienic, and unacceptable.

The drainage system around the facility was still poor and the only manhole that collected liquid waste was full of debris.

Alhaji Seidu Mamudu, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Butcher, said though the butchers had engaged the assembly, the authorities had failed to put the abattoir in good shape.

When contacted, Mr Simon Gameli Kusorgbor, the Wenchi Municipal Veterinary Officer, described the situation as worrying, saying because of the state of the abattoir, it was difficult to collect revenue from the butchers.

He explained that the adjustment in the slaughter fees was made by parliament and “nobody can do anything about it now,” and added his voice on the need for the Assembly to put the facility in good shape.

Efforts made by the GNA to contact Mr Alexander Obour Damoah, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive, were unsuccessful.

However, Mr Akadieti Ayambire, the Wenchi Municipal Coordinating Director who was sighted at the abattoir expressed concern about the lack of funding to rehabilitate the facility now after he held a meeting with the butchers.

Independence Day: Let’s recommit ourselves to ideals of freedom, justice and equality – NDC

0

NDC General Secretary

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on Ghanaians to resist the “oppression” of government and recommit themselves to the ideals of freedom, justice, and equality.

This was contained in a press release signed by NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey to mark the country’s 67th independence.

“As we commemorate this special day, let us remember the sacrifices of our forebears and recommit ourselves to the ideals of freedom, justice, and equality. Let us resolve to resist and break the yoke of the oppressor – the yoke of deception, of irresponsibility, and of prioritising breaking the 8 ahead of breaking poverty and underdevelopment,” the NDC said.

The NDC stated that the ruling government has brought the nation nothing but economic challenges characterised by high unemployment, poverty and corruption among others.

“To add insult to injury, the leadership has refused to take accountability and continues to deflect every responsibility. These issues threaten to erode the very fabric of our society and impede the realisation of our collective dreams and aspirations,” it added.

Meanwhile, the NDC which is poised to snatch power from the NPP in the December 7 election has pledged commitment to addressing the challenges and championing the cause of all Ghanaians.

They promised to advocate for policies that prioritise the welfare of citizens and promote inclusive growth and development.

“Looking ahead, we are confident that under the leadership of H.E John Mahama, the next NDC government will be committed to building the Ghana envisioned by our forefathers – a nation of prosperity, equality, and opportunity for all.”

The party added: “We will implement policies that create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve the lives of all Ghanaians. We will work tirelessly to restore hope and confidence in our nation’s future. Together, we can build the Ghana we all want. Long live Ghana!”

‘Do You Think I Am Useless When You Look At Me?’ – K. T. Hammond Questions Critics | Social

0

Minister-designate for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond has hit back at persons calling into question the competence of the elderly in society when it comes to national leadership.

Addressing Parliament’s Appointment Committee during his vetting on Monday, February 20, 2023, the nominee argued that whereas the youth can have a place in the governance of the country, it cannot be said that the elderly are useless and must therefore be relegated from national leadership.

“My argument is that, you don’t rule a country without the adults. I maintain it, the youth alone cannot run a country. It’s not possible. There can be a mixture of the youth… it’s never been my argument that they cannot have a say in the running of the country. I said they should be tamed, they should be temperate in the kind of things that they say and the suggestion that every adult is useless. You look at me, you think I am useless?” the nominee questioned members of the committee.

The Adansi Asokwa MP was recently the subject of public criticism after he questioned the competence of the Ghanaian youth relative to solely leading the country.

K. T. Hammond in September 2022, lashed out at some patrons of the Global Citizens Festi who hooted at President Akufo-Addo when he addressed attendees at the concert.

“Let’s exercise restraint a little. Akufo-Addo is the executive President overseeing all the affairs of the country. When he arrived on the stage, he didn’t say anything untoward. Besides, it wasn’t even a political platform. He was only expressing his satisfaction with the event”, he said.

“We will continue to admonish you the young men and women to be patient. When there’s an issue to be addressed, society always consults the elderly. Not you the young ones, whose heads are like coconuts,” K. T. Hammond who described the action of the Global Citizens Festi patrons as disrespectful added.

But appearing before the Appointment Committee on Monday, February 20, 2023, K. T. Hammond clarified that his statement was not to undermine the youth of the country.

“We’ve been young before, so it’s not for anybody to try and castigate the youth unreasonably. What I have been saying is this, and let’s get it right; the youth have all the reason to say what they want to say. They have the right and the entitlement to participate in the governing of the country. What I said was that there is a limit to how these matters are to be handled.

“There has been this whole business and I if you’d recall, I think the communist revolution or so. What it is was that ‘when we come to government the first thing we will do, all the lawyers we will chain them together and then dump them under the sea, we kill all of them.’ It is in one of the communist manifestos,” he said.

Freight dropped in Ghana’s ports by 15 to 17 percent.

0

According to Mr. Michael Luguje, Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), between January and September 2022, cargo at Ghana’s ports decreased by 15 and 17%.

“GPHA is hoping and trusting for a stronger traffic flow to Ghana’s ports in 2023,” Mr. Luguje stated.

He said this while speaking with a group of Tema-based journalists at a Press Soiree the GPHA hosted to thank the media for the year.

The numbers for transit cargo were still beyond the maximum limit throughout the period, according to Mrs. Sandra Opoku, Director of Tema Port, but all the others saw a decline.

Mrs. Opoku stated that the GPHA anticipates success in 2023 now that the cedi is stabilizing, since many importers were adopting the wait-and-see mentality, which caused the decline in volumes.

She said that despite the Ghana Export Promotion Authority’s best efforts to the contrary, one of the things GPHA discovered in its operations was that Ghana had a very low export drive.

According to Mr. Samuel Ntow Kumi, General Manager, Corporate Planning, GPHA, the Port Authority made significant investments in its operating infrastructure and infrastructure maintenance that needed to be recouped through tariffs.

Trump clarified that the port was operated without any financial assistance from the government and that it consequently built the ports at Tema and Takoradi using commercial debt and partnerships with the private sector.

He said that a comprehensive procedure, stakeholder interaction with freight forwarders and regulatory authorities among others, was adopted before tariffs were determined.

He claimed that the GPHA was the only investing in the ports, even though its tariffs accounted for less than 12% of all cargo-related fees.

He urged all involved parties to be understanding and patient if there was an increase.

During the soiree, journalists praised the GPHA for its friendly interactions with the media and inquired about a variety of topics, the MPS concession, Keta Port, and Tema Shipyard.

Family spends 8 months with no glass in windows after masked intruders break in

0

The family’s problems were only just beginning following the August break-in (Image: Anthony Corkill / SWNS)

A fearful family whose home was raided by masked men spent eight freezing months without glass in their front door and windows.

Anthony Corkill was asleep last year when masked men used hammers to break into his housing association property last summer.

Thankfully the crooks took nothing – but they left a trail of destruction behind.

Police quickly dropped the case and his landlords used planks of wood to board up the damage.

But it took PA Housing eight months to replace the glass – during which time Anthony and his family were left to suffer the bitter winter.

Temperatures inside the home are believed to have dropped to just a couple of degrees, the family said, and they could even see their own breath in the air on the coldest days.

Anthony, 38, from Leicester, said: “On PA’s website it says all maintenance requests should be dealt with within 15 days.

“But, after eight months, we were still waiting for the them to send someone round and replace the glass – it was a nightmare.”

Anthony and his family were left shaken when masked men used hammers to break into their home in August 2022.

The perpetrators smashed the glass panels in their front door and in their living room window – but never entered the property.

Leicestershire Police investigated, and a hammer that was left behind was sent off to be tested.

But shortly after, they concluded that the attack was likely a result of mistaken identity, and dropped the case.

In the meantime, PA Housing sent someone round to board up the window and front door with wood to temporarily replace the glass.

The housing association were under an obligation to fix the damage, but despite constantly chasing them, Anthony says nobody came.

He said: “My wife was sleeping on the sofa on the night of the attack, and the shattered glass showered over her. She suffers from PTSD as a result, and we now struggle to feel safe in our own home.

“Originally PA came out and boarded up the gaps, which was fine as a temporary fix. But after that, I couldn’t get hold of anyone and when winter rolled in, the temperature started to drop.

“I have three kids, one of whom is autistic, and we were literally left to freeze. It was pointless to have the heating on, as we still had the cold coming through, so we relied on duvets and blankets – we really struggled to stay warm.”

Last month, Anthony emailed the head office explaining his situation.

They eventually got back to him, and gave him a date of February 27 for the work to be completed.

But, predictably, the contractor didn’t show up, and consequently, the job was pushed back again.

The glass was finally fitted on March 2 and Anthony, a stay at home dad-of-three, said: “The head office assured me the glass would be put in on February 27.

“It had been eight months, so to be given a date I felt really relieved. But that relief was short lived, after I waited all day for the contractor, who never turned up.

“They finally came and fitted the new glass and the job took a maximum of an hour and a half.

“The fact they left us to suffer like we did is unacceptable, and PA need to be held responsible.”

A spokesperson for PA Housing said: “We’re really sorry for the experience Mr Corkill and his family has had.

“Following the incident last year, we did board the windows and door as an interim measure to make his home safe until the repairs could be completed.

Shortage of ‘bentua’ hits Accra Central Market

0

For the past three months, the Accra Central Market has faced a shortage of enema bulb syringes, locally known as “bentua,” leaving many vendors empty-handed.

This disruption in supply was brought to light during a week-long interaction between The Mirror and some traders in the product. Vendors from various parts of the country, who frequent the market to purchase the “bentua” on a wholesale basis, have repeatedly had to return home without the product.

According to the vendors, a Kumasi-based licensed importer, who has monopolised the importation of the “bentua”, is at the heart of the shortage issue. A vendor at UTC in Accra, who gave her name as Georgina, explained that the wholesaler supplied most of the stock in Kumasi and some West African countries including Cote d’Ivoire. “So by the time she supplies Accra, ‘na aka ketewa bi (it’s left with a small quantity).”

The exclusive import arrangement has left many vendors and their customers in a difficult position. “Frequent complaints and agitation from prospective customers have been overwhelming,” one of the vendors told The Mirror.

These customers are eager to obtain the “bentua” so they can distribute them to various destinations. At the Central Market in Accra, some vendors were observed abandoning their wares in hopes of being timely in getting the “bentua” from their distributors.

Amid this chaos, confusion arose when some vendors mistook this reporter for an importer who had come to improve their supply woes. A vendor at Kingsway, Maame Bee, expressed her frustration, stating, “If the woman in Kumasi does not supply the Accra Central market, nobody else seems to have the right to import into the country.

She imports them from China.” Another vendor who sold in front of the Universal Merchant Bank at the Okaishie market Naa Tsotsòo, shared similar concerns.

“Unfortunately, we cannot produce “bentua” in Ghana,” she lamented. “China, Germany, and Holland all produce “bentua”. There’s also an Indian company in Abidjan making them. Our great, great, grandmothers have been using this; Why can’t we produce some here?” she asked.

The shortage has severely impacted vendors such as Offeibea, who has been in the “bentua” business for 16 years and depends heavily on its sales for her livelihood.

“Because of the shortage, I am unable to sell wholesale. What I have now is just for retailing and it affects business; I can’t make much profit,” she stated from her position beneath a staircase in the cosmetics section of the market.

Despite these challenges, the “bentua” remains a highly patronised and profitable item, with prices ranging from GH₵25 to GH₵70 depending on the size. The “bentua” is a bulb syringe used in administering liquid through the anus for various health and ritual purposes.

Medical

However, a medical practitioner in general surgery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Philemon Kumassah, in an interview with The Mirror explained that the problem with the purchase had to do with what buyers were using it for, adding that the administration of some herbs through the syringe could have an effect on the colon and is therefore not generally recommended.

He noted that it was only in rare medical conditions that its usage was required, “even that, it is a special enema which is very gentle on the colon when we want to clear the rectum”.

“There is no health benefit for using an enema syringe and if there are no medical benefits, why are you using it?” he asked. A midwife at the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra, Ms Doreen Osei, also debunked the rumour that the syringe was a requirement at the labour ward.

“What we use is called penguin sucker. It is used to suction a baby’s nostrils and mouth after delivery to clear the airway for respiration”, she explained.

Users

Some users of the syringe, including young people who spoke to The Mirror explained that they used it to relieve constipation, and diarrhoea, administer medication to improve sex and administer punishment to children.

Daavi, a market woman, said she grew up in a Ga home and was not taught how to use it, and explained that she started practising it upon the recommendation of some market women.

“I use my bentua after every three months as soon as l deworm. I get some herbs and flush out my system. I feel very good”, she said. Ella Mensah, 28, said, “bentua de3 3y3 birth control (the syringe is a birth control device), all you need is to grind some pawpaw leaves and administer it early in the morning after a sexual encounter instead of taking morning after pills”.

Tube

Speaking on the handling of bentua, some market women noted that its tube could be replaced with a ballpoint pen container. The use of the ballpoint pen container generated some discussion among them. One of the women maintained that the original tube was better, hygienic and did not pose any danger.

Another market woman, Maame Etruba, explained that the improvised was enough to give two shots at a go because it had a big opening and could absorb much liquid.

“Besides the tip of the pen container is not smooth enough and likely to cause a tear at the anus” she added. They, however, concluded that buyers of the syringe who found the tip of the tube rough could trim it to make it smooth for penetration.

Delay in implementation of new transport fares affecting us – GPRTU –

0

The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) has stated that a further delay in announcing an increment in transport fares is adversely affecting the operations of its members.

The GPRTU noted that the recent increment in spare parts and other accessories is having an untold effect on commercial drivers.

Godfred Abulbire, the General Secretary of the GPRTU, is thus calling for an immediate increment in transport fares.

“Last year [2023], there were serious tax components that had affected all the spare parts, and the cost of spare parts has gone extremely up. Just this year, we had a direct correspondence from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) that they have revised all their taxes on commercial cars, taking effect in January. And whether we like it or not, all commercial cars will pay,” Godfred Abulbire said in an interview.

The recently passed Emissions Levy Bill by Parliament imposes an annual fee of GHC100 on all owners of petrol and diesel cars, starting from January 2024.

The government aims to promote the use of environmentally friendly energy sources for vehicle power through this tax, aligning with its commitment to climate-positive actions and carbon offset initiatives.

In response to these developments, the GPRTU has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, urging reconsideration of the Emission Levy Bill.

KODA’s death: Islamic prophecies are not said in the open; they’re done privately with directions — Habiba Sinare

0

Actress Habiba Sinare has explained the practices surrounding prophecies in the Islamic faith, offering insights into how they differ in Christianity.

In a panel discussion on a UTV showbiz program, the actress elaborated on the discrete nature of Islamic prophecies, emphasizing that they are not typically made public like in Christian traditions.

She explained that within the Islamic context, prophecies are conveyed privately by individuals with spiritual gifts, who approach recipients and provide specific instructions.

Sinare highlighted that these instructions often involve acts of charity, such as giving to the less fortunate, as a means of averting negative prophecies and seeking divine intervention.

“Our prophecies are not said in the open. Ours is different, we are called aside by someone gifted who then gives us instructions on what to do next, at least that’s what I know.

“We are directed to give to the poor as a means of reversing the bad deed,” she stated.

Her remarks come in the wake of discussions surrounding the passing of gospel musician KODA, prompting reflection on the role of prophecy and spirituality in times of loss and adversity.

A video containing a prophecy made by Rev. Richard Boateng at an ICGC event in February that tragically predicted the demise of Ghanaian gospel artist Kofi Owusu Dua Anto, better known by his stage name, KODA, appeared a few days ago.

Rev. Boateng is heard in the video talking about a vision in which he saw an arrow piercing KODA’s chest and damaging one of his important organs.

Stunning And Trendy Natural Weavings You Can Plait To Look Good

0

These gorgeous and trendy natural weavings are here to help you look your best:

Box braids are widely used because they are both classic and versatile weaving methods. If you want to braid extensions into your own hair, you’ll need to divide your hair into tiny, square sections. Box braids are a versatile hairstyle that can be refreshed with the addition of accessories or a splash of vibrant colour, and can be worn in a wide range of lengths and thicknesses.

Second, Ghana braids, often known as cornrows, an old weaving method, have recently become trendy. Your own hair, neatly or creatively braided close to the scalp, is acceptable to wear. Ghana braids require little care and look fantastic when paired with jewellery.

The third option, Senegalese twists, is also a beautiful option for weavers. Hair extensions are wrapped into your natural hair to lengthen it and smooth it out. Senegalese twists are light and the easiest way to look put together.

Faux locs are an excellent alternative to actually getting dreadlocks if you just want the look. It is possible to imitate locs by wrapping extensions around your natural hair. You may make them more bohemian and edgy by trimming them to varying lengths and removing some of the layers.

In order to achieve the fifth style on this list, a crochet needle is used to attach synthetic hair extensions to the wearer’s own hair. The process of setting it up in this manner is quick and easy. From smooth to wavy to curly hair, and everything in between, you have a lot of options to select from.

The intricate patterns and shapes of tribal braids have their roots in African hairstyles. Common weaving techniques used to achieve these one-of-a-kind styles include cornrows, box braids, and twists. The halo braid, also known as a crown braid, is so named because it resembles a halo when worn around the head. The basic technique involves creating two separate braids on opposite sides of your head and then joining them in the back. This can be done with regular braids or Dutch braids (reverse French braids). The halo braid is an elegant and adaptable hairstyle that may be worn to a variety of different occasions.

Although you may be wearing weavings, you need still take special care of and safeguard your natural hair. You can keep your hair in good condition by moisturising it frequently, washing it gently, and avoiding stress.

Don’t Drink Tea, Bread With Eggs And Salad If You Earn Less Than GH¢2000 A Month – Economist | Social

0

Economist Dr Evans Nunoo, says it doesn’t make economic sense for someone who earns between GH¢1,000 and GH¢2,000 to be taking tea, bread with eggs and salad.

January, the first month of the year, is often observed as a difficult period in relation to personal financial management.

The current unstable economic environment makes the situation dire.

To effectively manage one’s current financial situation, consumers are advised to assess their assets and obligations to make informed purchases.

Dr Evans Nunoo, gave the advice when he spoke to David Akuetteh on Luv-in-the-morning.

The topic was ‘how to survive on a salary of GH¢1,000 to GH¢2000’.

“Two thousand Ghana cedis is a small amount, if you look at our current economic situation. If you have to pay school fees and other bills. If you are a young person yet to start a family, 2000 cedis might be okay. Though you may want more.

“But if you are a family person, you don’t have the luxury of drinking tea and bread with eggs and milk. It’s too complex. Some of them even add salad,” he said.

Dr. Nunoo also advised on multiple bank accounts for expenditure and projects.

“If you are expecting multiple streams of income, you are tempted to have more bank accounts. If you want to work harder and be financially strategic, it is better to keep more than one bank account. It is not as if, if you are having only one bank account, you are making a mistake or not working hard.”

Newcastle predicted lineup vs Nottingham Forest – Premier League –

0

Newcastle United will be hopeful of a slightly more low-key Saturday this weekend when they travel to face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

The Magpies drew 4-4 with Luton Town last time out in a chaotic affair at St James’ Park and know they could fall into the bottom half of the table should they lose to Forest this Saturday. The Midlands side beat the Magpies 3-1 on Boxing Day, with former striker Chris Wood netting a hat-trick in a disappointing defeat for Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle still have an extensive list of injuries heading to the City Ground, meaning Howe needs to start getting a little creative with his team selections. Anthony Gordon is the latest doubt for the weekend, the influential winger picking up a knock against Luton.

Here is how Newcastle could line up on Saturday.

Newcastle predicted lineup vs Nottingham Forest (4-3-3)

Tino Livramento could come in at left-back / Marc Atkins/GettyImages

GK: Martin Dubravka  With Nick Pope out for the season, the Slovakian is now Newcastle’s number one. Despite some hit-and-miss displays from the Magpies, Dubravka has been solid in between the sticks.

RB: Kieran Trippier  Speaking of hit-and-miss, Trippier should retain his spot in the starting lineup at Forest. While he has struggled defensively this term, he produced a goal and an assist against Luton last time out.

CB: Fabian Schar – An ever-present in the Newcastle backline, the Swiss defender will be aiming to concede fewer than he did against the Hatters.

CB: Sven Botman – The 24-year-old has slotted back into the team nicely, with an injury to Jamaal Lascelles meaning he’s guaranteed to start on Saturday.

LB: Tino Livramento  Left-back was something of an issue against Luton with Dan Burn struggling to cope with the pace of the opposition front line. Livramento could be due a start after a difficult period for Burn.

CM: Sean Longstaff – Bagged a brace against Luton and is even more crucial to the Magpies given Joelinton’s long-term injury.

CM: Bruno Guimaraes – Howe will be praying Guimaraes stays fit for the rest of the season, with the Brazilian pivotal to how Newcastle perform.

CM: Lewis Miley  The youngster has taken everything in his stride during his debut season and has slotted into the Newcastle lineup perfectly.

RW: Miguel Almiron – The Paraguay international was close to a St James’ Park exit in January but now has a huge role to play for the Magpies until the end of the season. Almiron’s energy and relentlessness down the right could unnerve the Forest backline.

ST: Callum Wilson – The absence of Alexander Isak has been sorely felt by Newcastle at times this season, with Wilson yet to show his best so far this campaign. He needs to get amongst the goals again soon.

LW: Harvey Barnes – Gordon’s injury could pave the way for a start for Barnes, who has only featured eight times for Newcastle this term due to injuries. However, he did score off the bench against Luton.

Most Kidnappings In FCT Are Stage-Managed – FCT Minister, Wike Reveals

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that most kidnapping reports in the nation’s capital were stage-managed by people.

The former governor of Rivers State made the disclosure while addressing newsmen after a closed-door meeting with the Senate alongside the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, on Wednesday over insecurity in Abuja.

Wike stated that kidnapping has reduced in the FCT following the arrest of the two most wanted notorious kidnappers.

He said: “Most of the kidnappings here are sometimes stage-managed by people. There are some internal arrangements.”

“Mind you the two most wanted notorious kidnappers, we have gotten them and that is why you see the level of kidnapping has reduced.”

READ MORE: “We Can’t Fight Insecurity Without Good Roads” – FCT Minister, Wike

“For one month there has not been kidnapping in the FCT. We have used intelligence, and we have decided to dominate the forest because the FCT is bounded by for states that are crime prone.

“What we are trying to say is being able to limit or reduce the level of insecurity. But if anybody tells you that as a society is concerned, you will not have one form of criminality, that is not correct and we must have to tell ourselves the truth.”

“Take for example, you have a housekeeper in the house, you have a driver who will plot to kidnap the child of their master.

“In that case, what do you want us to do? All we can do is to see how the person that has been kidnapped is released.”

“But to stop crime of that nature will be difficult because it’s an in-house arrangement, where a driver that is involved in bringing a child from school will mastermind kidnapping of the child .”

Shaibu Storms PDP HQs, Demands Certificate Of Return

0

Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has stormed the Peoples Democratic Party’s national headquarters in Abuja, demanding the party’s certificate of return for the governorship election.

Recall that Shaibu was declared the winner of a parallel PDP governorship candidate for the state while Asue Ighodalo won the main election.

However, the PDP presented a certificate of return to Asue, when Shaibu was at the party’s secretariat on Wednesday to ask for the same credentia.

He insisted that he won the primary election and should be formally recognised as such.

Shaibu said: “Today is the day set aside for the collection of certificate of return for the winner of the primary. I understand someone came yesterday and was given, well, the court will decide.

“So, it is not surprising that I am here today. I am here to receive my certificate of return because I won the primary in Edo and the authentic delegates voted.

“If you look at the halls of the party office here, you will see the names of all the delegates that voted for me. Today is the presentation of the Certificate of Return, according to the party. So, PDP must follow its rules and guidelines; this is what we are talking about.

“The process of producing a candidate has been compromised from the onset, and we ask that those things be corrected. Even the committee that recommended a political solution is fully aware that there were abnormalities in the process that led to my emergence, and whoever.

“But the reason I am here is to obey the guidelines to come and receive the certificate of return, and I was told that somebody else came here yesterday and was given the certificate.

“Those who conducted the primaries and wrote this report are being threatened. They tried to procure them, and many of them refused. Now they are being threatened to write another report.

“This is a committee that was put together by the NWC. If the PDP is serious and ready to win Edo State, they must do what is right. And I am telling our members in Edo not to be worried; we will get to the promised land. Edo will be the place where we will reset how internal democracy can be strengthened so that the foundation of democracy is not destroyed.

“I told them that I was coming, but none of them have come to work. Only the staff of the secretariat are here. I don’t know why they are not here. That is strange, and that is in line with why they will be in a hurry to give the certificate yesterday when today was what was approved for the certificate to be given to the winner.

WATCH: 39 killed in Senegal bus disaster

Portia CROWE

Thirty-nine people were killed and more than 100 others injured when two buses crashed in a head-on collision overnight on an arterial road in Senegal’s central Kaffrine region, President Macky Sall told reporters Sunday.

Images of the incident showed the completely mangled front end of a white bus, with blood-flecked seats, personal items and a shoe strewn around the tree-lined crash site.

Road accidents are common in Senegal, largely because of driver error, poor roads and decrepit vehicles, say experts, but the latest disaster has caused one of the heaviest losses of life from a single incident in recent years.

Speaking to reporters, Sall corrected an earlier government statement that had put the death toll at 40, citing a miscount at the morgue.

He made the comments after visiting the crash site, on the No. 1 national highway just outside of the village of Sikilo, and speaking with some of the injured at the regional hospital in the nearby town of Kaffrine.

“We note with great pain and sadness the death of 39 people in this traffic accident near Kaffrine”, Sall said.

“We have lost many young people in this accident and tomorrow the Prime Minister will convene an interministerial council that will involve the world of transport – transporters, drivers, insurers, security services – to look at the measures to be taken”, he added.

The government has announced three days of national mourning beginning Monday, with flags to be flown at half-mast throughout the country.

Kaffrine mayor Abdoulaye Saydou Sow, who is also the Minister of Urbanism, said in a statement that the accident occurred between 2:00 and 3:00 am (GMT and local) Sunday and was caused by a burst tyre.

He said the Kaffrine morgue was “saturated” and that bodies were being sent to another morgue in Kaolack, a city 65 km away.

Public prosecutor, Cheikh Dieng, had previously said in a statement that early investigations suggested a public passenger bus suffered a burst tyre and swerved off course.

It then crashed “head-on with another bus coming in the opposite direction”, he said.

Sow said he and several other ministers had visited the injured in Kaffrine and Kaolack on Sunday.

The delegation included the Minister of Land Transport, Mansour Faye, Health Minister Marie Kermesse Ngom, and Minister of Territorial Equity and National Solidarity, Samba Ndiobene Ka, he said.

The president of the National Assembly, Amadou Mame Diop, said in a statement that he “and all the Members of Parliament share the grief of the entire Senegalese people” and commended “the rapid response of the emergency services”.

Opposition politician Ousmane Sonko announced on Twitter that he would postpone a scheduled fundraising program in light of the accident.

“We bow before the memory of the deceased, offer our very sincere condolences to their grieving loved ones and to all Senegalese and pray for the merciful rest of their souls as well as a speedy recovery for the injured”, he said.

France’s Minister of Foreign Affairs on Sunday conveyed her condolences to her Senegalese counterpart, the French ministry said in a statement.

In October 2020, at least 16 people were killed and 15 more injured when a bus collided with a refrigerated lorry in western Senegal.

Local media said at the time that the truck was hauling fish to Dakar.

Gyakye Quayson not an enemy – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarifies

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu presents 2021 Budget

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has clarified that the Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, is not an enemy of the Majority MPs.

He emphasized that though members of the Majority caucus may disagree on issues with the Minority, it doesn’t mean that Mr Quayson is an enemy.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs clarified this after the swearing-in of the MP in Parliament on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

“We welcome our colleague. He enters this House rightly or wrongly, but he cultivated friends while he stayed here. I’m not sure that anybody can say that Gyakye Quayson is an enemy to him. We may disagree on a few things, but I believe that across the political divide, he made so many friends. I believe the NDC wants to believe that the victory our colleague has chalked is a peak victory that will hurt the pride of the NPP, as the Minority Leader [Ato Forson] has alluded to. We must congratulate him.”

“On the other hand, we, the Majority also believe that it’s a momentary victory of a fantastic character. But that is the choice of the people of Assin North. And everybody must respect that whilst it lasts. The rest of it is in the hands of the Attorney General”.

He further debunked claims that Mr Quayson’s case is selective justice.

“Mr. Speaker, I hear my colleague [Ato Forson] said some political party engaged in money sharing. I also witnessed some political party busy distributing machetes, insecticides and wellington boots. Be truthful to yourself and your conscience.

“Nobody from his true conscience can say that his prosecution is selective justice. Let us all respect the Constitution. When people talk about selective justice, we wonder where they are coming from, examples abound in this House,” he stated.

Go and find a job! – Sally Mann blasts ‘broke’ Funny Face –

0

Controversial entertainment pundit, Sally Mann has descended heavily on the comic actor, Funny Face for soliciting financial support on social media.

According to her, Funny Face took the wrong step in making his predicament known to the general public and asking for financial support on social media which attracted vehement criticisms from some sections of the public.

She asserted that Funny Face should look for jobs to do as a young man to fend for himself instead of availing himself of public criticism by begging people to come to his rescue.

“He [Funny Face] needs help in what sense? Is he a cripple? Can’t he go and find work to do? Or he cannot work because he is a celebrity? He should knock on the doors of people to help him instead of going on social media to beg for money,” she said while speaking on Adom TV and monitored by GhanaWeb.

Sally Mann further slammed Funny Face for using social media to solicit support and urged him to desist from such acts as it goes a long way to tarnish his image.

“Funny Face said he is sick and has recovered now. If you make your predicaments known to the whole world with some people chiding you, how would you heal? I think he should keep certain things to himself.

“Look at how Asamoah made it public that he had promised him 1,000 cedis and people were criticizing him, it was not good. I have a problem with him making the issue known on social media because that is causing more public havoc,” she fumed.

Funny Face recently shared on his social media platform the financial crisis he is battling with that has hindered him from seeing his children for a couple of years.

He called on the general public to come to his aid and support him with any amount that would help his situation.

The news was met with mixed reactions on social media where some people doubted the authenticity of his claims.

Ghanaian footballer, Asamoah Gyan, and other personalities have contributed some money to support him.

Institutional Suppliers reschedule planned picketing to April 8

0

The National Association of Institutional Suppliers has rescheduled its planned picketing to Monday, April 8, 2024, at the Ministry of Education.

The association had initially intended to picket on March 4, 2024.

The decision to reschedule arises from the Ministry’s ongoing failure to award contracts and settle outstanding debts to the association’s members, which total over GH¢100 million.

The association has expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to make payments for uniforms, house dresses, and other essentials supplied to various senior high schools over two academic years.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the Association announced the rescheduling of the picketing to April 8, adding that the picketing will extend to Tuesday, April 9, 2024, after which members will return to their homes.

The Association has planned the picketing due to the Ministry of Education’s failure to uphold their part of the agreement by not signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as agreed upon.

The Association claims that the Ministry did not commence payments on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, despite promising to do so during a meeting on March 26.

“A meeting will be convened to address other outstanding issues, namely the low-price quota and awards of PE kits and Stationery at the school level after all arrears have been cleared. NAIS agreed to suspend the intended picketing at the MOE, slated for April 8, 2024.

“Regrettably, the Ministry of Education has failed to uphold their end of the agreement by refusing to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as agreed upon. Consequently, we are compelled to proceed with our planned picketing event.”
