Vybz Kartel has opened up on discovering his wife’s infidelity while he was imprisoned for 13 years.

On February 25, 2025, excerpts from ‘The Drink Champs Podcast’ surfaced on X, where Vybz Kartel discussed his wife, Tanesha ‘Shorty’ Johnson’s cheating.

What struck netizens was how easily Vybz Kartel forgave his wife.

The Jamaican dancehall musician explained that he fully understood her actions and chose to be lenient because she had remained faithful for a long time before eventually being unable to continue.

He emphasised that his respect for her is still intact, stating that he “forgave” her as soon as he found out.

One of the reasons Vybz Kartel gave for easily forgiving his wife was that she had remained by his side despite everything that had transpired.

The musician said while he was in prison, she managed all his affairs and that there were times when he would call her to follow instructions and handle things on his behalf.

Vybz Kartel said his wife remained supportive throughout his imprisonment.

“She was there right through, but come on, I am in prison for f**king 13 years; what do you expect her to do? Like, save the p**sy? I have been with her since before I got famous and rich, but like I said, you see, prison is dangerous because when you go to prison, sh*t gets weird.

“And like I said, she held it for years, and then she couldn’t hold it anymore,” Vybz Kartel said.

He added, “I still respect her because I understand she is a human being… I forgave her immediately because I understand, but I just had to move on.”

On how he discovered, he said another woman, with whom he shares a child, informed him. However, he chose not to disclose her identity.

“I was in prison crying…The other baby mum that told me, the snitch, she told me,” Vybz Kartel revealed.

Meanwhile, Vybz Kartel said he has moved on with his life and is separated from his wife.

He is currently in a relationship with a Turkish woman, Sidem Öztürk.

The Jamaican dancehall musician was arrested on September 29, 2011, for alleged possession of an illicit drug.

Shortly after that, the Major Investigation Taskforce also charged him with the alleged murder of Jamaican businessman Barrington Burton.

Here are a few ideas to guide your finances.

Read the full story originally published on November 28, 2022.

It is a matter, of course, that globally purchasing power of individuals is dwindling by the day, with Ghana not being an exception.

As an employee and an income earner, here are a few ideas to guide your finances. Remember, there is always a silver lining in every cloud.

Income

Look for other legitimate sources of income, including monetising a talent or a flare you have. (Part time jobs, weekend jobs, online jobs, etc.)

Spending

Be determined to spend within your income.

Spend only on critical necessities.

Have a budget and stick to it if possible.

Use a shopping list.

Compare prices before making purchase decisions.

Change brands and service providers to affordable alternatives.

Make bulk purchases to take advantage of discounts.

Buy locally made products if at all possible.

Plant crops at your backyard if possible.

Embark on a DIY (Do it Yourself Approach) i.e., repairs, salon, local produce, fufu powder, fruit Juices, etc.

Dish and store food in smaller quantities to avoid frequent reheating, which results in spoilage and wastage.

Take advantage of the deep freezer and store during bumper harvest.

Plan your menu. This will minimise the frequency of eating out.

Areas to consider cutting cost

Do your laundry home rather than paying for it.

Eat home more rather than outing.

Use online rather than going physically.

Turn off lights at places not necessary, send messages rather than call, meet online rather than drive or pay for transportation.

Pool cars with friends rather than each person riding in his or her car to a programme or to the office.

Use solar during the day if you have solar.

What to avoid

Impulse buying

Borrowing (Credit Card, etc. especially with high interest rates)

Being wasteful

What to consider

Still saving part of your income (They are the little drops of water that will make you a mighty ocean).

Maintain an emergency liquid fund in savings, investment, or a safe place which will also be at arm’s length.

Why I decided against destroying Thomas Partey’s career for leaving Tema Youth ‘illegally’

Partey joined Atletico Madrid from Tema Youth Partey joined Atletico Madrid from Tema Youth

Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer, the owner of Tema Youth Football Club, has recounted the circumstances under which Thomas Partey left the club for Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Speaking on Hot FM, Palmer stated that Partey left the club without the club’s notice and that he almost petitioned the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) to take action against him.

Palmer stated that he was, however, restrained by another footballer, Moses Odjer, who pleaded with him not to take any action that had the potential to cripple Partey’s career.

Palmer said that another reason he opted against dragging Partey to FIFA was the awareness that his club stood to benefit from future transfer deals.

“There wasn’t any proper transfer. We wrote to Atletico, and they never bothered to respond. At the time, I was tempted to go to FIFA and report the conduct of Atletico, but Moses Odjer begged me to stop and allow Partey to play his ball.

“I thought about it and realized that we would be entitled to a solidarity fee if he moved to another club, so why would I destroy the career of such a player? So I controlled myself and decided not to bother Atletico Madrid. That’s why he left the country. Because of that, he feels we have a grudge.”

He recounted that Tema Youth were preparing to play Asante Kotoko with Thomas Partey in the squad.

However, the midfielder reported a stomach upset and decided to sit out the match, only for Palmer to realize later that his player had left Ghana for Spain to join Atletico Madrid.

“On the night he was about to travel to Spain, he informed me that he had a stomach issue. We were preparing for a game against Kotoko, and he was in the squad, but because of the sickness, we had to exclude him from the team for the match. I later discovered that he was traveling that very night to sign with Atletico Madrid,” he stated.

Thomas Partey’s decision paid off as his career blossomed at Atletico Madrid, earning him a lucrative move to Arsenal, where he reportedly earns £250,000 a week.

Edena Bakatue Launched

Edena Bakatue Launched

The Edena Traditional Council has vowed to punish the religious leaders found preaching negatively about traditional beliefs and practices of the annual Bakatue Festival celebration.

Paramount Chief of the Elmina Traditional Area, also referred to as the Omanhen of Edina, Nana Kodwo Kondua VI, gave the warning in his keynote address during the launch of this year’s annual Bakatue Festival celebration in Elmina.

The event that attracted hundreds of people in and outside the community was under the theme, “Sustaining Our Heritage to Promote Community and National Development”.

It started with colourful processions by the traditional council’s Asafo Companies to the Elmina Castle Restaurant, where a durbar was held. The chief Lindquist of the Anomansa Traditional council, Omannyi Kweku, poured libation and invoked the spirit of 77 gods and ancestors in the area to bless this year’s Bakatue Festival celebration.

The Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Benjamin Anane Nsiah, on behalf of the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mrs.Maame Efua Huadjeto, thanked the Edena Traditional Council for the invitation and pledged the commitment of the Ghana Tourism Authority in ensuring that this year’s Bakatue celebration becomes fruitful.

The Guest of Honor, Nana Oworaba Obentsen, an indigene of Elmina, who doubles as the Royal Tourism Ambassador in the Central Region, addressed the gathering on “Repurposing Our Cultural Heritage for Relevance Preservation, Youth Engagement and Economic Emancipation”. He explained objectives, vision, and how to design and shape Elmina to become the best international tourist destination in Ghana, Africa, and the whole world.

Nana Oworaba Obentsen, the Amansrafohen of the Gomoa Assin Traditional council and the founder of the Crown Forest, also indicated in his keynote address that his owning the largest Hotel at Gomoa Nsuaem in Gomoa Central of the Central Region is to help harness tourism potentials in the country and West Africa. He mentioned the use of information, education, and collaboration with the government and private sector as a means of boosting tourism in Africa.

This, he noted, can only be realized through information, education, and collaboration with the government and the private sector. Reasons for this, he explained, stem from the African adage, “If one wants to go fast, the one has to go alone. But if one wants to go far, the one will have to go together with others”.

Nana Kodwo Kondua VI

Nana Oworaba Obentsen, in his keynote address, said that although Ghana is blessed with an array of traditions and customs that reflect her rich cultural diversity, the country does little to tap into these resources. Nana Oworaba Obentsen recounted that the Edena Bakatue Festival celebration was in existence years before the arrival of the first Europeans – the Portuguese – in the country in 1471.

He called on the present and future generations to endeavor to sustain the nation’s customs, traditions, and festivals that define the citizenry. Nana Oworaba Obentsen urged the citizenry to heed his call for the nation’s rich cultural heritage, adding that Western cultures can lead some young people to undervalue their culture and traditions.

He paid glowing tributes to the E.T. Mensah Band of the 1940s and 1950s and the Osibisa, for showing the way, and through them emerged the Western World’s Afrobeat and others.

The Royal Tourism Ambassador in the Central Region, Nana Oworaba Obentsen, noted that if authorities plan the Elmina township well and promote other places of interest, the fort and castle will not be the only tourist destinations in the area but other attractions. He suggested to the Ministry of Tourism, the Ghana Tourism Authority, and all stakeholders to team up with him to help turn the fortune of Elmina around.

He also pleaded with the government through the Ministry of Tourism and the Ghana Tourism Authority to try and give Elmina shares of the revenue derived from the Cape Coast Castle to facilitate development.

The paramount chief of the Edena Traditional Council, Nana Kodwo Kondua VI, in his address, noted that the community and the entire nation derive huge benefits from the festival celebration, but Elmina lags in terms of economic and infrastructural development. He appealed to stakeholders to support the Bakatue Festival celebration, especially in performing activities like rituals, cleanup exercises, and the like.

Nana kodwo kondua VI asked the government to share with the Elmina royalties from promoting the castle.

He cautioned religious leaders guilty of denigrating the African Indigenous Religious beliefs to desist from the discriminatory act and promote peace and national cohesion.

The Bakatue Festival is a celebration of Ghanaian culture and history that takes place annually in Elmina, Ghana. The festival is celebrated on the first Tuesday of July. It marks the beginning of the fishing season, honors the founder of Elmina, gives thanks to the gods for a good fishing year, promotes unity, strengthens community ties, and honors ancestors. The name Bakatue comes from the Fante dialect and means “draining of a lagoon”. The festival has been celebrated since at least 1847.

Some activities to climax the celebration include drumming, dancing, storytelling, parades, durbar of chiefs, and sacred rituals. The festival is a cultural heritage of the people of Elmina, it is an opportunity to showcase the rich traditions and vibrant culture of Elmina. The occasion also offers an opportunity for dignitaries to address the gathering on issues of national interest.

NPP’s Swift Disavowal of Bawumia Sparks Debate Over Loyalty and Leadership

0

Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) faces mounting scrutiny over its abrupt pivot away from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, its 2024 presidential candidate, following a bruising electoral defeat that saw the party lose both the presidency and parliamentary seats.

Once celebrated as the party’s “economic wizard” and a champion of digital transformation, Bawumia now finds himself sidelined by the same political machinery he loyally served for 16 years—a move critics argue exposes a culture of disposable loyalty within Ghana’s largest opposition party.

The backlash intensified after the NPP’s historic loss in December 2024, which triggered a wave of internal finger-pointing. Senior party figures and grassroots delegates have openly blamed Bawumia for the defeat, labeling him a “puppet” of former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration and accusing him of failing to distance himself from unpopular policies. Yet the criticism raises a thorny question: why is Bawumia, a two-term vice president who defended the party’s agenda through economic crises and public discontent, being uniquely scapegoated while architects of those policies remain unscathed?

Historically, the NPP has shown patience with defeated flagbearers. Akufo-Addo lost presidential bids in 2008 and 2012 before clinching victory in 2016. Similarly, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) allowed John Mahama to run again in 2016 after his 2012 victory was overturned. Bawumia, however, appears denied such redemption. “The party gave Akufo-Addo three chances. Why is Bawumia disposable after one?” asked a former NPP regional chairman, speaking anonymously. “This isn’t about performance—it’s about power.”

Insiders allege Bawumia’s campaign was hamstrung from the start by Akufo-Addo loyalists who micromanaged his strategy, stifled his autonomy, and forced him to defend controversial decisions like the botched e-levy and austerity measures. “He was set up to fail,” claimed a senior NPP strategist. “The old guard controlled his messaging, refused to let him critique Ofori-Atta’s economic management, and then blamed him when voters rejected the same policies.”

The electoral numbers tell a grim story. In the NPP’s Ashanti Region stronghold, the party’s total votes plummeted by 23.7% compared to 2020, with four parliamentary seats flipping to the NDC. Delegates there expressed fury over Bawumia’s perceived subservience to Akufo-Addo. “We wanted him to show spine, to promise change—not act as Nana’s mouthpiece,” an Ashanti constituency organizer said. “How can you lead a nation if you couldn’t even challenge your own boss?”

Yet the rush to condemn Bawumia overlooks deeper systemic failures. As vice president and head of the Economic Management Team, he was neither solely responsible for policy decisions nor empowered to override ministers like Ken Ofori-Atta, whose fiscal strategies drew widespread public anger. Critics argue the NPP’s hierarchy is exploiting Bawumia’s loss to deflect accountability from higher-ranking figures. “If he was a puppet, who pulled the strings? Why aren’t they being held to account?” asked political analyst Dr. Amma Adoma.

The fallout has ignited a broader debate about loyalty in Ghanaian politics. Bawumia abandoned a prestigious central banking career to join Akufo-Addo’s ticket in 2008, enduring years of electoral setbacks before becoming vice president. His allies argue such sacrifice deserves respect, not vilification. “He stood in the fire for this party when others hid,” remarked a former deputy minister. “Now they’re throwing him under the bus to protect the real decision-makers.”

For the NPP, the gamble is existential. By discarding Bawumia, the party risks alienating its northern base and technocratic wing, which viewed him as a bridge to younger, urban voters. Meanwhile, potential 2028 contenders like Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and Kennedy Agyapong face skepticism from a public weary of establishment figures. “If the NPP thinks replacing Bawumia with another Akufo-Addo protégé will fix their problems, they’re deluded,” warned pollster Kwame Asante. “Voters punished them for arrogance and stagnation—not just the candidate.”

The episode also underscores a recurring theme in Ghana’s democracy: the uneven burden of accountability. Presidents and their inner circles rarely face consequences for failed policies, while deputies and spokespersons become convenient fall guys. Bawumia’s fate, observers note, may deter future leaders from accepting high-risk roles—or worse, incentivize sycophancy over principled governance.

As the NPP scrambles to rebrand ahead of 2028, its treatment of Bawumia serves as a cautionary tale. In politics, loyalty is transactional, but the price of betrayal can linger long after elections fade. The party’s next move—whether to rehabilitate his image or erase it—will signal not just its vision for the future, but its willingness to confront the rot within.

Pay the Woman Her Money and Stop This Silliness – Netizens Slam Sonnie Badu after Coming Online to Gift $300 to Fans

0

Gospel singer Sonnie Badu has been slammed by social media users after dropping a video promising to dash people $300, the same amount of money Mzbel called him out for owing her.

Badu, instead of settling his debt to the singer, decided to prove to the whole world that he’s rich and can spend more than $300 whenever he feels like.

In a new video, he asked his followers to help him find widows, brilliant but needy students and people with health challenges who need money for him to help them.

He promised to give out $300 each to any person whose plight he found touching. Badu claimed the spirit of God had spoken to him to carry out the donation.

His video comes days after Mzbel exposed the gospel singer for owing her over $300. According to her, Badu had owed her for over 8 years and despite all her efforts, has ignored her.

Netizens, reacting to Badu’s video, called him out for being petty and a bad representative of God.

“What kind of pettiness is this? See someone that says God is using him smh,” one netizen wrote.

Another said: “That’s not it badu! Pay the woman her money and stop this silliness!!”

Government to launch Ghana Labour Export Programme – Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Feb 28, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Government will soon launch the Ghana Labour Export Programme.

This, he said would allow skilled Ghanaian workers to work abroad for specified periods to gain experience and also contribute their quota to other countries.

“Ghana is finalising bilateral labour agreements with key partners to address the needs of vulnerable labour migrant workers and promote ethical recruitment,” President Mahama stated in his address to Members of the Diplomatic Community in Ghana at the 2025 Exchange of New Year Greetings, the first since his assumption of office on the 7th of January, for a second term in office.

“We are also in the process of finalising additional agreements to enhance protection and support for migrants.

The President said this formal gathering with Members of the Diplomatic Corps represented a renewed hope for partnership and promise of new beginnings as we step into the year 2025.

“On this occasion, we affirm our commitment to nurturing the bonds of friendship, cooperation and goodwill that exist between Ghana and your respective countries,” he said.

President Mahama said his Government was fully committed to addressing the significant macroeconomic and social challenges they faced as a country for the benefit of their citizens.

He said the domestic challenges existed within a global context that required a careful navigation of geopolitical dynamics.

“We remain steadfast in promoting dialogue and cooperation among nations to meet the challenges collectively. The world is interlinked, and the obstacles we encounter are not confined within our borders,” the President said.

He said they required a unified response rooted in solidarity and cooperation.

“In Ghana, we are committed to promoting a 24-hour economy aimed at creating an environment where businesses can operate around the clock,” President Mahama said.

He the initiative sought to maximise economic productivity and infrastructure utilisation while generating sustainable employment opportunities across multiple shifts.

He said key sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, construction and transport services would greatly benefit from this policy, leading to a thriving economy that works for everyone and not a select few.

“We recognise the vital role of export development as a key driver of economic growth. We will accelerate export development aimed at boosting export capacity and market accessibility.”

The President said the Government would establish the Accelerated Exports Development Programme, which he had committed to personally chair.

He said the Government was also committed to supporting micro, small and medium enterprises with technology to efficiently leverage the African continental free trade area.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to social development and acknowledged that the diaspora remained an invaluable asset to the nation.

The President said they were dedicated to strengthening their connection with Ghanaians abroad and people of African descent worldwide, and friends of Ghana wherever they may be.

He said Migration, if properly managed, could benefit migrant workers, their communities and their countries of destination and origin.

He noted that however, migrant workers were often at risk of exploitation, abuse and exclusion with limited access to social protection benefits.

‘Ghana’s economy was not ‘criminally handled’ – Abena Osei Asare rejects Mahama’s assertion

0

Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei Asare, has firmly rejected President John Dramani Mahama’s assertion that the economy was “criminally mishandled” under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment on 20th February, President Mahama criticised the economic management of his predecessor’s government while announcing a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers.

He reiterated his concerns during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of his second term, expressing shock at the state of the economy.

However, Madam Osei Asare dismissed these allegations, insisting that while Ghana had faced economic difficulties, claims of criminal mismanagement were baseless. “Ghana’s economy was not ‘criminally handled,’ as the President suggests. Like many nations, we encountered challenges, but we took responsible measures to mitigate them. Signs of economic recovery were evident before the transition of power,” she stated.

She highlighted that real GDP growth averaged 6.3% in 2024 (Q1–Q3), with the industry sector leading at 10.4% growth, demonstrating economic resilience.

Backing her argument with key economic indicators, Osei Asare noted that Ghana recorded a positive primary balance of 0.4% as of November 2024, a significant improvement from the -1.4% primary balance in 2016.

She further emphasised that total revenue collection had surpassed its target by 3.3%, refuting claims of financial mismanagement.

While acknowledging that Ghana still faced economic challenges, she insisted that President Mahama’s portrayal of the economy was misleading.

“We are not out of the woods yet, but the narrative being pushed by the President is simply not accurate,” she asserted.

Mahama working to permanently end dumsor – Gyan-Mensah

0

Deputy Energy Minister-Designate, Richard Gyan Mensah, has reassured Ghanaians of President John Mahama’s administration’s commitment to working tirelessly to end the country’s energy sector crisis.

Speaking to Channel One News in the aftermath of the President’s State of the Nation Address, Richard Gyan-Mensah accused the minority in Parliament of deliberately scheming to see President Mahama fail in his quest to end the frequent intermittent power outages, popularly referred to as ‘dumsor.’

He assured that, having visited the energy ministry following his nomination as Deputy Energy Minister, he is confident in the major plans being put in place to fix the power sector crisis.

“[President John Mahama] gave a picture of what he came to meet and provided assurances of what he is going to do in terms of resetting the country.

“I heard my colleagues make some remarks, especially regarding the issue of dumsor. This is what I perceive: there was a deliberate plan by the NPP to ensure that President Mahama fails when he came to power.

“I am assuring the people of Ghana that there is so much good work the new NDC administration is going to do for the people of Ghana.”

“This is the fifth State of the Nation Address I have witnessed, and I can boldly say it is the best one ever delivered since I became a Member of Parliament. The President was very straight to the point.

Richard Gyan Mensah, who is also a second-term Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, described the President’s State of the Nation Address as the best he has witnessed in Parliament.

Richard Gyan Mensah was recently nominated by President John Mahama as deputy energy minister. On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, he successfully underwent vetting and is now awaiting swearing-in.

Madina NDC congratulates Obeng-Kenzo on appointment as Acting VRA CEO

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Madina Constituency has extended heartfelt congratulations to Mr Edward Ekow Obeng- Kenzo on his appointment as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA).

The party also commended President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to selecting competent and experienced individuals to lead critical national institutions.

In a statement issued by the constituency executives, the Madina NDC described Mr Obeng- Kenzo as a dedicated and results-driven professional whose vast experience in the energy sector makes him the ideal person to steer VRA toward efficiency and sustainability.

They also emphasised that beyond his professional qualifications, Mr Obeng- Kenzo is a committed member of the NDC and one of the party’s top financiers.

Ibrahim Fuseini Faila, Chairman of the NDC Madina Constituency, and Mr Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina, commended Mr Obeng-Kenzo for his well-deserved elevation to the leadership of one of the Ghana’s most vital energy institutions.

“This significant achievement is a testament to your dedication, competence, and vision,” the statement read. “We are confident that you will lead the VRA with the utmost commitment and excellence,” the statement said.

The leadership of the NDC in Madina further assured Mr Obeng-Kenzo of their unwavering support as he embarks on his new role.

They emphasised their collective commitment to ensuring his success for the benefit of the VRA and the nation at large.

“We are proud to see one of our own, a true party man and a loyal supporter of the NDC, being recognised for his hard work and dedication. Mr Kenzo has not only contributed significantly to the energy sector but has also been a pillar of financial support for the party over the years. His appointment is well deserved,” the statement stated.

The Madina NDC further praised former President Mahama for demonstrating once again that he values competence and experience in governance.

They noted that Mahama’s decision to entrust VRA to Mr Kenzo reflects his commitment to placing qualified individuals in key positions to drive national development.

“President Mahama has proven that leadership is about putting the right people in the right positions. By appointing a technocrat and a staunch party financier like Mr Obeng- Kenzo, he has reaffirmed his dedication to good governance and the progress of our great party,” the statement added.

The constituency executives and party faithfuls in the statement said Madina remained optimistic that Mr Obeng-Kenzo’s appointment would not only strengthen the energy sector but also solidify the NDC’s vision of economic growth and national development.

Stop the political insults and polarisation; it’s sinking our democracy

0

Ghanaian actor, Prince David Osei Ghanaian actor, Prince David Osei

Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has expressed dissatisfaction with what he describes as the growing trend of insults in Ghana’s political arena.

In a post on X on February 27, 2025, the actor pointed out that the ongoing insults and division in Ghana’s politics are damaging the country’s democracy.

Buttressing his points, he recalled how some of the country’s leaders even stay unbothered while some Ghanaians constantly denigrated former President Akufo-Addo during his administration.

“What the hell has happened to our beautiful Ghana? The damned polarisation is tearing our democracy to shreds. Dang, it crushes my heart to see our people sinking into the quagmire of political insults and intolerance!

“In the last administration, folks took it upon themselves to tarnish the ex-president and anyone who dared to voice an opinion. Our sullen parents, religious leaders, and so-called state elders not only stayed quiet but applauded those sons of guns who created derogatory YouTube channels just to make people feel like crap,” he said.

He also referenced a recent incident where some Ghanaians, particularly members of the New Patriotic Party, insulted President John Dramani Mahama while he was delivering the 2025 State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025.

“I believed this bs would end. But watching SONA 2025 on UTV live on Facebook nearly broke my heart. Sure, I don’t agree with everything President Mahama and the NDC say or do. I don’t need to wish them ill or hate anyone because Ghana is our home, all of us!

“But these lads, using foul language against the president… is unacceptable. Can’t UTV even moderate these live comments? I admit, I might have messed up in the past, for which I am remorseful. But this isn’t good for Ghana or our youth,” he added.

He further expressed disappointment in some media houses in the country that have given some individuals the opportunity to publicly insult leaders.

File photo of a worried man File photo of a worried man

Dear GhanaWeb,

Two years ago, I was dating a lady who won an American lottery. After that, she started acting distant and giving me attitude.

I later found out that while we were together, she was also seeing another guy.

A few months later, they got married. The man she married reached out to me, took my number from her, and called.

He told me that she had said I was nice to her, but she preferred him. I didn’t respond to him.

I wished them well and moved on with my life. Recently, she texted me, saying she wanted us to get back together. We started talking again, and she decided to come to Ghana.

At that time, I was in a relationship with another woman who was pregnant with my child. I chose not to tell her about my current relationship, just to see what her intentions were.

When we met at the airport, she started complaining about my outfit, even though her brother’s outfit was worse.

She then decided to stay at my place, but I told her I had moved to a new place and couldn’t host her because there was still a lot of work to be done. Instead, I booked an Airbnb for two days.

When we got in, we had dinner and we got talking. In the night, she told me how much she has missed me in bed.

She’s really feeling sex so we made out and she said it’s been a while she had a good sex like this. We ended up spending 3 weeks at different hotels with her paying the bills.

Things became cool between us again and she begged me never to leave her because she really loves me.

Because I knew I wouldn’t take her seriously again, I didn’t bother asking of her husband. Anytime her friends call, they will ask her whether she is getting enough sex. I heard telling one of her friends that, I know how to handle her in bed, the sex is good that’s why she hasn’t returned to the States yet.

The day before her departure, she was menstruating so I didn’t think of touching her but she begged me that she wanted to have sex.

According to her, when she leaves, she won’t find any man who will handle her the way I do.

I did everything for her happiness, even though it felt awkward. Now, I’m confused because of my woman at home.

All this time, I lied to her, telling her that I had been sent to a different region to supervise a project, when in reality, I was at home taking care of her and our child.

This flirting got so much into my head that my woman at home started to feel like an enemy. I found myself getting angry over things I normally wouldn’t.

When this lady went back to the States, I thought of surprising her with a shopping spree to repay her kindness. Her birthday was also coming up, so I asked her to send me a wishlist.

What she wrote was insane, and there’s no way I could have afforded everything on the list. So, I picked a few items and bought them for her.

But she didn’t appreciate it. She expected me to get everything on the list. I have a baby to take care of, so spending that much on her birthday just wasn’t possible. She stopped texting me, and if I didn’t text her first, I wouldn’t hear from her. That’s when I took a step back and reflected on how much I had hurt my woman, even though she never knew about the other lady. I asked for her forgiveness.

Just yesterday, the lady texted me asking for forgiveness, saying her friends had influenced her to get a man closer to her, and she listened to them.

Now, she regretted it, saying that even though I’m in Ghana, the things I did for her most Ghanaian men wouldn’t do. I didn’t respond to all her messages, and then she sent a large sum of money as compensation. I transferred the money back to her, telling her I didn’t need it.

I told her that letting her back into my life was a big mistake that nearly cost me my happiness. I’m happy with my woman and baby now, so I had to block her to find peace of mind. But now, I feel guilty about what I did to my woman.

I’m worried that she might find out one day, and I’m confused about whether to tell her myself or keep it a secret.

I honestly don’t want to lose her because she’s a good woman. What should I do now?

In a video circulating widely on social media, Okocha talked down Jamie Carragher, downplaying his significance in the football debate.

Okocha, in a sarcastic tone, posited that certain ex-footballers ought not to be treated with seriousness when they pass certain statements about football because they lack the pedigree of greats of the game.

Okocha then went for the jugular, jabbing Carragher with the viewpoint that no parent would want their footballer son to be like the Liverpool legend.

“There are some players that will say something, and you just overlook them. If you look at their careers and the type of football that they played, you can understand. You wouldn’t want your son to be like [Jamie] Carragher,” Okocha said.

Okocha’s comments have excited African football lovers who believe that he has perfectly summed up Jamie Carragher’s career.

They are excited that one of Africa’s greatest footballers has spoken about the issue and ensured that Carragher feels the anger of the continent.

The Moment Afenyo-Markin challenged Bagbin in Parliament

0

A moment of exchange unfolded in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, when Alban Bagbin, the Speaker cut short Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s response to President John Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), despite the latter’s protest.

Per parliamentary convention, both the Majority and Minority leaders are invited to give immediate remarks on the President’s address before a more detailed debate ensues.

Following Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga’s praise for the President’s “true state” presentation, it was the turn of Effutu MP Afenyo-Markin, who wasted no time in painting a contrasting picture.

Afenyo-Markin began his remarks with a congratulatory message to the President, acknowledging that it was Mahama’s first address to Parliament since being re-elected.

However, he quickly shifted into a critical analysis of the address, citing contradictions and unfulfilled promises.

He referenced Mahama’s 2013 remarks about Ghana’s struggling economy, where the then-president had said, “the meat is now down to the bones” and accused him of repeating similar lamentations without demonstrating progress.

Further criticizing the President, Afenyo-Markin pointed out what he perceived as inconsistencies in governance, arguing that despite appointing fewer ministers, Mahama had significantly increased the number of presidential staffers.

His remarks drew jeers from the Majority side, who chanted “away, away” in an attempt to drown him out.

As the atmosphere grew tense, Bagbin interjected, informing the Minority Leader that he had only one more minute to conclude his remarks. Afenyo-Markin, visibly dissatisfied, gestured in protest, sweeping a finger from left to right in defiance.

“So, when Akufo-Addo was here on his last occasion, there was patience for Emmanuel Kofi Buah to speak. Mr. Speaker, there must be patience for the Minority side. I cannot be limited. Let me finish,” he insisted.

However, his plea fell on deaf ears as Bagbin swiftly intervened again, this time with finality stating, “Your time is up, Honourable Minority Leader.”

Ghana records highest interest rates decline among 11 top African countries

0

Ghana has seen interest rates drop sharply since this year’s beginning, placing it 1st among 11 African countries.

However, the West African nation remains second with the highest interest rates on the continent, while Egypt is still ranked first with the highest yields.

Since the beginning of the year, the yield on the 91-day bill has gone down by 3.94 percentage points to 24.48%.

Similarly, that of the 182-day bill has also declined by 3.58 percentage points to 25.39%.

The declining interest rates will compel the Bank of Ghana to cut its monetary policy rate from the current 27%.

The country with the lowest interest rates in Africa is Rwanda, with the 91-day pegged at 7.05% and the 182-day at 7.39%.

This indicates that it has a low-interest rate environment.

Nigeria still boasts of a high-interest rate environment with the yields on 91-day and 182-day bills going for 18.00% and 18.50%, respectively.

Money Market Rates Broadly Trended Downwards

According to the Bank of Ghana, the 91-day and 182-day Treasury bill rates declined to 27.73% and 28.43%, respectively, in December 2024, from 29.39% and 31.70% in December 2023.

Similarly, the rate on the 364-day instrument declined to 29.95% in December 2024 from 32.97% in December 2023.

Additionally, the Interbank Weighted Average Rate (IWAR) dropped to 27.03% in December 2024 from 30.19% a year earlier.

This decline contributed to a reduction in average lending rates for banks from 33.75% to 30.25% over the same period.

President Mahama’s advisors thought I was above Deputy Minister – Isaac Adongo

0

Bolgatanga Central MP, Isaac Adongo Bolgatanga Central MP, Isaac Adongo

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has opened up about why he was not included in President Mahama’s recent list of deputy ministerial nominees.

There is unease among the youth of Bolgatanga Central in the Upper East Region after their MP was not appointed as a minister of state. They have vehemently and publicly rejected his appointment to the Board of the Bank of Ghana.

President John Mahama’s failure to appoint Isaac Adongo to a ministerial position has surprised some political analysts, given the prominent role the outspoken legislator played in the run-up to the December 2024 elections.

Isaac Adongo, a financial consultant, became a thorn in the side of the then-governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the election campaign, frequently criticizing the government’s economic policies.

As one of the leading voices of the NDC on economic issues, he often granted media interviews lambasting the Akufo-Addo government for its alleged mismanagement of the economy. On February 28, 2024, he delivered a public lecture themed “Ghana’s Economic Mess: Victim of Poor Economic Governance?” at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where he exposed what he described as the Akufo-Addo administration’s abysmal handling of the economy.

Given his contributions to the party while in opposition, some political analysts expected Isaac Adongo, who was the Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, to be appointed at least as a deputy minister of finance, considering his background.

However, on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, President John Mahama announced Isaac Adongo as one of the 12 members to sit on the Bank of Ghana’s board.

Speaking about the development in an interview with Asempa FM, as monitored by GhanaWeb, Isaac Adongo, a Chartered Accountant, explained that President John Mahama’s advisors believed his competence was beyond that of a deputy ministerial role.

“When it comes to the deputy minister position, part of the reason is that there were people advising the President who believed that I am above a deputy ministerial role. That is not coming from me, and under no circumstances did I reject the position.

“If it had been offered to me, and that was the capacity in which the President wanted me to serve, I wouldn’t have said no. Of course, if the President calls upon you to serve in any capacity, it is a privilege that I would gladly accept. However, under the circumstances, he must have felt that he wanted to use me in another way.

“Maybe there is a timing gap, and people expect that by now my name would have been included somewhere, but that has not happened. However, that does not mean this is the end of the story.”

Private sector participation in ECG imminent – President announces

0

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)

As part of expected reforms to improve the energy sector, President John Dramani Mahama has announced efforts to introduce private sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) metering and billing operations.

The decision aims to boost revenue collection and curb commercial and technical losses threatening ECG’s viability.

The announcement comes amid recent public debate over ECG’s proposed privatisation.

Currently, the power sector is saddled with numerous challenges including collection and system losses, non-compliance with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM) and legacy debts.

President Mahama, speaking in parliament during his first State of the Nation Address (SoNA 2025) said, “The financing shortfall has risen considerably, to approximately US$2.2billion or GH¢34billion for 2025”.

Given this, he said: “Urgent measures will be needed to reduce it to sustainable levels and ultimately eliminate it”.

He stated that his administration inherited an energy sector on the brink of collapse, which was weighed down by unsustainable debts. This, he observed, has led to many Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and fuel suppliers threatening to cease their operations.

President Mahama observed that despite GH¢45billion in Energy Sector Levies (ESLA) collections over eight years, the energy sector remains saddled with a GH¢70billion debt as of December 2024.

“It is of deep concern that several state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the energy sector are struggling to stay afloat. Unless urgent interventions are made, many of them will go under. Financial distress in the energy sector remains a significant obstacle to delivering consistent and affordable electricity to Ghanaians and poses an existential threat to the economy in general,” he stated.

To address this crisis, the president said he has directed the Energy Minister to enforce a single revenue collection account, adhere to the CWM and cut wasteful expenditure.

Aligned with this directive, he said, the ministry has set up an advisory committee to guide private sector participation in metering and billing to improve efficiency in revenue collection and reduce the high commercial and technical losses that are threatening to drown the state-owned utility company.

“A pilot partnership between ECG and Enclave Power has proved highly successful and provides us with a workable framework. ECG provides a bulk supply of power to Enclave Power Limited while Enclave Power provides meters and bills for all companies operating in the Free Zones Enclave – with 99 percent revenue collection and nearly 100 percent uptime in power supply.”

He observed that a reduction in commercial and technical losses would lead to affordable tariffs for everyone and bring relief to all consumers of electric power.

“We also aim in the medium-term to achieve 100 percent gas utilisation for power production and eliminate the use of crude oil,” Mr. Mahama added.

This, he anticipated, will save Ghana hundreds of millions of dollars spent on the importation of liquid fuels for power production.

President Mahama also announced to parliament that the West African Gas Pipeline’s (WAPCO) scheduled pigging will be completed in the first weeks of March.

“Once additional gas flows from Nigeria, we anticipate a marked improvement in the power situation,” he added.

Furthermore, he outlined that a ‘Renewable Energy and Green Transition Fund’ will soon be operationalised to enhance efficiency and accelerate the country’s transition to clean energy.

“This initiative will drive investment in sustainable energy solutions, including solar street lighting, rooftop solar installations, off-grid solar systems, electric vehicle charging stations and chargeable outboard motors. These measures will reduce dependence on the national grid and position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s green energy transition,” he stated.

To address the country’s declining oil production and other challenges facing the upstream oil and gas sector, the president announced that government has initiated revitalisation efforts. This initiative aims to create a business-friendly and supportive environment for partners and prospective investors.

Explaining further, he said, “My meetings with players in the upstream sector have been extremely positive and we have been assured of substantial investments running into billions of dollars”.

Mohammed Kudus demoted to fourth Black Stars captain

0

Ghana star Mohammed Kudus Ghana star Mohammed Kudus

Ghana star Mohammed Kudus has been demoted to the fourth captain of the Black Stars, sending him down in the team’s leadership hierarchy.

Kudus, 23, captained the Black Stars in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Sudan and Niger under controversial circumstances.

The decision to hand the captain’s armband to the West Ham United star ahead of the more experienced Jordan Ayew sparked widespread debate in the country.

The former Ajax midfielder, who remains an influential player on the field, is now fourth in the leadership structure behind Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey, and Alexander Djiku.

Partey has reportedly declined the role, while Kudus is said to have no interest in leading the team.

Despite the leadership reshuffle, Kudus is expected to play a key role in Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

The Pragya Ambulances Were Brought to Ghana in 2021 Under NPP Gov’t – Kevin Taylor Exposes Okatakyie Afrifa’s Propaganda

0

U.S. based Ghanaia political commentator, Kevin Taylor, has revealed that the tricycle style ambulances that were were trending recently where not brought to the county by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, the tricycles were brought into the country in 2021, during the reign of the NPP government.

Taylor pointed to an article from 2021 in Graphic Online that proved this fact that the tricycles were presented to the then Chief of Staf, Frema Akosua Osei Opare.

His comments come after NPP blowhard and former Angel FM host, Okatakyie Afrifa, mocked the NDC government and Ghanaians for celebrating the arrival of several new such ambulances.

He said Mahama had promised to transform Ghana yet this is what he has been able to bring.

Kevin Taylor wasted no time responding to Okatakyie to debunk his lies.

Watch below…

Netizens reacting to the video slammed Okatakyie for being too desperate for relevance and lying to trend.

Others said irrespective of the government that brought the policy, it is a good thing because that part of the country has so many maternal deaths.

If it takes Stephen Amoah to hold a presser after a SONA, then NPP is collapsed- Elikem Kotoko

0

Elikem Eric Kevin Kwame Kotoko, Deputy National Organizer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reacted to the press conference held by Honourable Stephen Amoah after the maiden State of the Nation’s Address (SONA) by President John Dramani Mahama in his second term.

The Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament (MP) led the Minority Caucus press conference after the SONA. Among other things, Stephen Amoah lamented about the recent erratic power supply, commonly called dumsor, experienced in some areas of the country.

“Several excuses have been given for the current excruciating dumsor – the latest being the current maintenance programme of the West Africa Gas Pipeline.

“We do not know whether, under the NPP government, the Gas Pipeline was going through similar maintenance. If so, why were the lights on, but cannot be on today because of the maintenance of the Pipeline?” he queried.

Reacting to this, Elikem Kotoko says if it takes Honourable Stephen Amoah to hold a presser after such an important exercise, then the leading opposition party needs an overhaul. According to him, there were qualified individuals in the NPP to conduct such an important press conference.

In a Facebook post, he wrote “The NPP we all knew in the past is not what we are seeing today. The party needs a serious overhaul, absolutely no single known member of substance.

If it takes the likes of Stephen Amoah to hold a presser immediately after a SONA, the NPP is collapsed.

Just juxtapose the faces lined up in the below picture with the promising intelligent young men and women on the NDC’s side. Kpordawoe!”

The Minister pledged support for the Commission’s efforts, emphasising the need for collaboration and coordination among stakeholders.

Hon. Muntaka, who was speaking during a working visit to the Commission in Accra, urged the Commission to put necessary measures in place and continue with its good work to achieve its mandate and promote national security, economic development and good governance.

Last year, under the previous Akufo-Addo administration, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Ghana launched the 2024 World Drug Report in Accra, Ghana, as part of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The event was held on the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention” and seeks to raise awareness and intensify efforts to prevent drug trafficking and abuse.

In a speech read on behalf of the then President of Ghana, the then Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey stated that the previous government was committed to addressing the global drug problem, acknowledging the challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse.

According to him, this was evident through Ghana’s enactment of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019), which treats substance use disorders as a public health issue and provides for treatment, rehabilitation, and alternative livelihoods.

Hon. Henry Quartey noted that Ghana has never been spared from the impact of drug trafficking, drug abuse and attendant health problems. “However, it is heartwarming to state that Ghana acknowledges the challenges with the implementation of international and domestic drug policies, particularly for the health and safety of the Ghanaian society” he added.

The launch of the 2024 World Drug Report in Accra served as a call to action for West African countries to intensify their efforts in combating drug trafficking and abuse. Ghana’s commitment to this cause is a beacon of hope for the region, and its efforts are expected to have a positive impact on the global fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

The 2024 World Drug Report highlighted the need for evidence-based approaches to drug prevention and treatment and emphasises the importance of addressing stigma and discrimination against people with drug use disorders.

4 key highlights of President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address

President John Mahama, Speaker Bagbin and Afenyo-Markin President John Mahama, Speaker Bagbin and Afenyo-Markin

The 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) by President John Dramani Mahama sparked heated debates, political drama, and even a singing contest in Parliament.

The address, delivered on February 27, 2025, outlined the president’s “Resetting Ghana” agenda, but was met with criticism, particularly from the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over issues of public sector dismissals and economic challenges.

Afenyo-Markin slams Mahama over public sector dismissals

Following the president’s speech, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused the Mahama administration of widespread dismissals in the public sector.

He stated that numerous individuals who secured government jobs after the December 7, 2024, elections had their appointments revoked.

“Mr. Speaker, today the President has told us that 2.2 million Ghanaians are unemployed. But in less than 100 days, all we have witnessed is ‘sack them, sack them, sack them, dismissal upon dismissal,’” Afenyo-Markin lamented.

He further noted growing frustration among the youth, citing street sentiments that accused Mahama of inconsistency in tackling unemployment.

Speaker Bagbin asserts authority over Minority Leader

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin used his authority to step in to limit Afenyo-Markin’s criticism of the president after the (SoNA).

The Minority Leader, while seconding a motion for adjournment, continued to criticize the president’s economic policies, arguing that Mahama should focus on solutions rather than repeated lamentations over economic challenges.

“The president again came to this House with a familiar story, the usual lamentations. He packaged it in a language as though we have a new beginning. Mr. Speaker, if the president has any concerns, his duty is to fix them,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

As he raised concerns about employment, domestic bonds, and governance, Majority MPs chanted “Away! Away!” in an attempt to drown out his speech.

The Speaker then intervened, reminding Afenyo-Markin that he had only one more minute to conclude his remarks. Despite Afenyo-Markin’s insistence on finishing, Bagbin shifted attention to acknowledging distinguished guests, effectively ending the Minority Leader’s speech.

Parliament turns into a singing competition

The parliamentary session saw an impromptu singing contest between members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Following Mahama’s address, Majority MPs from the NDC, dressed in white, stood and sang their campaign song, Asempa n’aba (Good news has come), celebrating the speech.

In response, NPP MPs altered the lyrics to Odi dumsor na ba (He has brought dumsor), referencing the intermittent power outages.

The musical exchange lasted for several minutes before Speaker Bagbin intervened to restore order.

Mahama’s critique of Akufo-Addo’s economic legacy

President Mahama, in his address, did not hold back in criticizing the economic state left behind by the previous administration, led by Nana Akufo-Addo.

He described the economy as burdened with heavy debts and severe economic challenges, noting that Ghanaians were facing unprecedented hardship.

“I am sad to report that the state of our nation is not good. Our economy is in crisis, and our people are experiencing unprecedented hardship,” Mahama stated.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to job creation and economic stability through his proposed 24-hour economy policy. He also addressed issues such as the ongoing IMF bailout program, security, and the cost of living.

Mahama’s SONA filled with populist promises, blame shifting

0

Former Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare, has strongly criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of his second term, accusing him of failing to set a clear governance agenda.

President Mahama, in his address on Thursday, February 27, 2025, painted a bleak picture of the Ghanaian economy and pledged to restore stability.

However, Osei Asare, who is also the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, dismissed the speech as filled with “populist promises, economic doom-saying, and blame-shifting.”

She also took issue with the President’s lack of clarity on how he plans to fund his proposed social intervention programs.

“President John Dramani Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) was expected to set the tone for his administration’s governance agenda. Instead, it was a predictable mix of economic doom-saying, political blame-shifting, and populist promises without a credible funding plan.

“In addition to creating a gloomy picture of the economy he has inherited, the President has outlined heavy expansionary fiscal policies that, at best, may be considered populist and unsustainable. It is ironic that, on the one hand, the President describes the economy as being in an intensive care unit (ICU), yet, on the other hand, he is pushing for massive new social intervention programs without indicating how they will be financed.’

Adongo Claims Mahama’s Advisors Deemed Him “Too Big” for Deputy Minister Role

0

Isaac Adongo
Isaac Adongo

Isaac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, has revealed that he was overlooked for a deputy ministerial position in President John Dramani Mahama’s administration because advisors close to the president believed he was “too big” for such a role.

Speaking in an interview, Adongo expressed his willingness to serve in any capacity to support the government, emphasizing that he would have accepted the position if offered.

“I’ve been reliably informed that some of the president’s advisors felt I was above a deputy ministerial role. That’s not my view, and I would never reject such an appointment if it were offered to me,” Adongo stated. He clarified that while he respects the president’s decision-making process, he remains ready to contribute to the government’s success in any capacity.

Adongo, a vocal member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a prominent figure in economic and financial matters, stressed that he does not believe in pressuring the president for appointments. “The president must be trusted to make the best decisions for the government. If he feels I’m needed in a different capacity or at a different time, I respect that,” he added.

The MP’s comments come amid speculation about his exclusion from Mahama’s initial list of ministerial and deputy ministerial appointments. Adongo, known for his sharp critiques of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s economic policies, has been a key voice in the NDC’s economic discourse. His absence from the government’s leadership team has raised eyebrows, with some party members questioning whether his outspoken nature may have influenced the decision.

However, Adongo dismissed such speculation, reiterating his loyalty to the party and the president. “If His Excellency calls on me to serve in any capacity, I will gladly accept it as a privilege. The fact that my name hasn’t appeared yet doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story. Timing is everything,” he said.

Adongo’s remarks highlight the delicate balance of power and perception within political administrations. While some may view his exclusion as a snub, Adongo’s response reflects a pragmatic approach to governance and a commitment to putting the party’s interests above personal ambitions.

As the Mahama administration settles into office, the question of how to best utilize Adongo’s expertise remains unresolved. For now, the Bolgatanga Central MP has made it clear that he is ready to serve whenever called upon, even as he continues to play a pivotal role in parliament and within the NDC.

“The president knows my capabilities, and I trust his judgment. My focus is on supporting the government to deliver on its promises to the Ghanaian people,” Adongo concluded.

Ghana’s climate action: complex but necessary task

0

Generally, when you mention climate change, what comes to the minds of many people is the significant variations in global temperature, rainfall, wind patterns, and other measures of climate that take place over several decades or longer.

This simply means a longer-term trend that differentiates climate change from natural weather variability.

But, currently the major driver of climate change involves human activities, particularly industrialisation that rapidly increases the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, including coal and oil.

The main greenhouse gases that cause climate change as a result of industrial activities are carbon dioxide and methane.

The effects of climate change are not far-fetched as the world struggles to cope with global warming, erratic rainfall, drought, flooding, rise in sea level, greenhouse gas emissions and loss of carbon sinks.

Ghana, though not yet industrialised, is grappling with the devastating socio-economic impact of climate change. Forestry, mining, petroleum exploration, and agriculture or farming result in the emission of carbon dioxide.

Recognising the effects of climate change risks to national development, successive governments in Ghana have made considerable strides through policies and programmes, and taken actions to increase the country’s resilience to the negative impacts of climate change.

In furtherance of this, Ghana in 2013 formulated the national climate change policy that provides strategic direction and co-ordinates issues of climate change, to ensure effective adaptation, social development and mitigation of climate change threat.

In the stream of events, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, under the Akufo-Addo government, launched a programme, the 2024 edition of the Green Ghana Day, targeted to plant 10 million trees across the country.

Citizens, including traditional rulers, children, government officials, and members of religious groups, are encouraged to plant trees along degraded watershed areas, roads, within communities, as well as on compounds of homes, schools, churches, offices and recreational grounds and parks.

The then sector minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, explained that the government adopted the Green Ghana Project to deal with the incessant degradation of forests, which has been going on for years without any conscious effort to replace the trees, and to contribute to the global fight against climate change.

He cautioned: “Available data shows that between 2010 and 2015 alone, the amount of forest our country lost far exceeds the area of forest cultivated between 1963 and 2016, a whopping 53 years, which stands at 157,300 hectares”.

However, Mr Jinapor, expressing hope that Ghana can attain net zero emission, revealed that almost 721,000 hectares of forest were cultivated between 2017 and 2023.

This, he said, was under the Ghana Forest Plantation Strategy, in addition to trees planted under the Forest Investment Programme, the Cocoa and Forest Initiative, the Green Street Project, the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme, Ghana Shea Landscape Emission Reductions Project, the Youth in Afforestation Programme, and the Youth in Plantation Establishment as an Occupation Programme, funded by the Forest Plantation Development Fund.

Now, the creation of the Office of the Minister in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability by President John Dramani Mahama has given another impetus to the fight against climate change effects in Ghana.

Additionally, it deepens the government’s commitment to international climate efforts, particularly the Paris Agreement that seeks to prevent global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees, to which Ghana is a signatory.

To build resilience and enhance complete efforts toward a green economy and climate-resilient sustainable development, the Minister in charge of the new office, Mr Issifu Seidu, has been tasked to co-ordinate activities of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Environmental Protection Agency, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Centre for Climate Change at the University of Ghana, Ministry of Finance, and security agencies, to tackle the shocks of climate change.

The successive governments in Ghana have taken steps to stop illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which is contributing to the destruction of the environment and climate change threat.

Apart from the cutting down of trees, thereby destroying carbon sinks, the fossil fuels used for mining activities release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

The country has taken steps to end galamsey, which results in pollution of water bodies, degradation of forests, land, and destruction of wildlife habitats, most of which help to absorb the shocks of climate change.

For instance, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo set up an inter-ministerial committee on illegal mining, chaired by the then Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Frimpong Boateng, to address the issue of galamsey.

Additionally, the government constituted various taskforces involving the military such as Operation Halt Galamsey, and also introduced community mining, all in a bid to regulate small-scale mining and ensure responsible extraction of minerals.

This led to the seizure and burning or destruction of excavators, bulldozers and other mining equipment, yet people continue to destroy the environment, thereby contributing to the climate change threat.

Recently, President Mahama directed the Ministers of Lands and Natural Resources, the Interior, and Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to arrest and prosecute any individual or group of persons who would be caught engaging in galamsey. He also pledged to ban mining in forest reserves, and revoke all leases issued for small-scale mining.

Clearly, Ghanaian governments have not relented efforts in protecting citizens, especially the poor and vulnerable, against climate change effects.

But, land degradation, biodiversity loss, erratic rainfall resulting in water shortages, flooding, decline in food production, reduced economic growth, health risks and decline in agro-ecological productivity continue to negatively affect development.

Indeed, despite the strenuous efforts to protect the environment and fulfil Ghana’s climate action, there are gaps and shortcomings that require serious attention.

Climate information and capacity development through education and early warning systems are insufficient as they are not reaching vulnerable groups adequately enough to enhance their ability to cope with climate change and adapt their livelihoods.

Although local communities are already on the forefronts of climate change impacts, they are not consulted in decision-making on issues that most affect them.

Climate change decisions and planning are currently largely top-down, receiving less financing at the sub-national level, limiting the learning and various initiatives of mitigation and adaptation that are going on at the local level.

As Ghana continues to develop new policies, strategies, and approaches to tackle climate change, investment in adaptation projects is critical.

International and national authorities should, therefore, entrust finances and delegate authority and power to local communities to use resources to protect themselves and build their resilience.

In Ghana, tackling climate change effects has become more difficult because while farming and other economic activities are sources of employment and livelihoods, they result in emission of carbon and methane gases, which are harmful to the ecology and human beings.

The Green Revolution Innovative Thinkers Ghana (GRITG), a non-profit organisation, seeking to tackle global food security, climate change and ecological degradation, has joined the bandwagon in calling for a switch from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy like solar or wind.

This is to reduce emissions driving climate change, and promote sustainable land use practices, including adopting climate-smart agriculture and eco-friendly consumption patterns.

The issue about climate change is dicey because there is no way Ghana can avoid the release of carbon dioxide and other gasses into the atmosphere once economic activities continue the way they are undertaken in the country.

So what is the way out? The time has come for the government to lead the charge, and involve individuals and organisation, to collectively scale up climate-friendly initiatives, policies and projects to combat climate change and environmental degradation.

This would not be an easy task, but with collective efforts of journalists, individuals, organised labour, the clergy, health professionals, chiefs, non-governmental organisations, climate change effects can be managed, even if not entirely eliminated.

Ghana deserves healthcare system that prioritizes lives over politics

0

The Forum for Development and Accountable Governance (FDAG) has accused the previous government of deceiving the public with its widely publicized “free dialysis” initiative, calling it an electoral gimmick that collapsed immediately after the December 2024 elections.

The advocacy group claims that the programme’s failure has directly contributed to the deaths of patients who were left stranded without treatment.

According FDAG, investigations across major hospitals in Ghana reveal that the initiative, which was announced in November 2024, was poorly planned, lacked proper funding, and left thousands of renal patients without access to life-saving dialysis treatment.

In a press statement signed by Nana Kojo Abbam, a senior research fellow of the group who doubles as the spokesperson, stated that the government, through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), promised free dialysis treatments at 40 health facilities, allocating between GHS 20 million and GHS 57 million for the Programme.

However, an FDAG investigative report covering hospitals such as Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), Efia Nkwanta Regional Hospital (ENRH), Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH), and Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) found that the programme was poorly executed and quickly collapsed.

“More than 70% of patients who were supposed to benefit from the programme could not access treatment due to funding shortfalls, machine shortages, and administrative confusion,” the statement said.

“Hospitals received little to no clear directives, leaving patients and medical staff in limbo. Within weeks after the elections, the program collapsed entirely.”

FDAG’s findings suggest that at least 30 renal patients died as a result of the abrupt end of the initiative.

“We spoke to families who were forced into crippling debt just to keep their loved ones alive,” said Nana Kojo Abbam, spokesperson for FDAG.

“Some patients were even willing to pay for dialysis but were denied treatment due to bureaucratic hurdles created by the failed free dialysis.

The advocacy group is now demanding answers from the government and the NHIA.

FDAG is also calling for a formal investigation and possible prosecution of officials responsible for what it describes as “avoidable deaths.”

“The people of Ghana deserve a healthcare system that prioritizes lives over politics,” Abbam said.

“We cannot allow election-time gimmicks to determine who gets to live and who is left to die.”

Additionally, the group insists that dialysis treatment should be permanently included under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) rather than being used as a temporary political promise.

Ghana’s dialysis crisis has worsened in recent years, with over 5,000 renal patients requiring regular treatment.

Due to high costs and limited access, more than 60% of these patients receive inadequate care or no treatment at all.

Government sparks interest in US$1.3 trillion global MICE market

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Government has reiterated commitments to position the country as a hub for international summits, business conventions and high-profile gatherings.

Addressing parliament in his first State of the Nation Address yesterday after resuming office on January 7, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama said government will strategically promote Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism to diversify Ghana’s tourism offerings.

“We must capitalise on this unique advantage to maximise our benefits and strengthen our reputation as the Centre of the World,” the president added.

The global MICE market and Ghana’s untapped potential

Indeed, the global MICE tourism market – which forms part of business tourism – is expected to reach an estimated US$1.3trillion by 2028.

However, tourism sector stakeholders have consistently expressed concern over the state of the country’s infrastructure – a key factor that drives the success of MICE.

Currently, the National Theatre and Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) have the capacity to host only 1,500 and 2,500 delegates respectively.

Mobile facilities and structures – including the Grand Arena and Fantasy Dome – within the AICC can host between 3,000 to 5,000 people at full capacity.

But these facilities, stakeholders said, cannot compete with those in South Africa and other countries on the continent.

Though over one million visitors were said to have visited Ghana in 2019 for the ‘Year of Return’ according to the Ghana Tourism Authority, the number of people who specifically came to the country for MICE were not segmented.

A senior expert on communications in Africa at the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Kojo Bentum-Williams, agreed that Ghana must leverage its safety, security, good business ethics and transport connectivity in the sub-region to become the hub for business tourism and MICE destination.

Though revenue from MICE in the global tourism space reached more than US$800billion by 2023 according to the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, Africa’s share stood at only 3.3 percent while Europe is at 55 percent.

It is estimated that close to 40 percent of business and conference delegates return to those destinations as leisure tourists, bringing their families with them.

in Africa and growth projections

South Africa with its Johannesburg Convention-Expo Centre, which has a capacity of 20,000 people, has been making strong statements in taking a slice of this business tourism market on the continent. South Africa alone has about four convention centres ranked among the continent’s top-10.

MICE is a big revenue earner for African countries: including South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, Egypt and Morocco. In South Africa, there are around 211,000 national, regional and international MICE events hosted each year.

Rwanda also increased its revenue for MICE from US$74million in 2018 to over US$150million in 2023.

With the MICE industry forming about 10 percent of the overall tourism sector globally, it is reported that MICE delegates spend about five times regular tourists’ expenditure.

Whether you are attending a church service, enjoying a casual brunch with friends, or simply relaxing at home, having a stylish yet comfortable outfit is key. Here are some trendy fashion styles that are perfect for ladies to wear on a Sunday.

One of the most popular choices for Sundays is the chic, casual look. A maxi dress is a versatile option that can take you from a laid-back day to a more formal gathering. Opt for soft fabrics such as cotton or linen that are breathable and comfortable. A floral print or pastel color palette can add a feminine and fresh vibe. Pair the dress with comfortable sandals or wedges for an effortlessly stylish look.

Another stylish option is the classic jeans and blouse combination. High-waisted, straight-leg or boyfriend jeans paired with a stylish blouse or tunic can give a sophisticated yet easygoing appearance. A simple blouse with puffed sleeves, ruffles, or lace details can elevate the outfit. Complete the look with a pair of loafers, sneakers, or block heels for added comfort without sacrificing style.

For a more elegant Sunday style, a pleated skirt with a fitted top is a great choice. The pleats add dimension and movement to your outfit, while the fitted top keeps it structured and chic. This look works well for brunch dates or casual outings. Pair it with ballet flats or low heels for a polished finish.

If you prefer something more sporty, a jumpsuit or romper can offer a stylish, yet comfy alternative. Add a statement accessory, like a bold handbag or hat, to make the outfit stand out.

Finally, if you’re staying home but still want to look fashionable, try wearing a cozy yet stylish knit sweater with lounge pants or a casual skirt. Soft fabrics like cashmere or cotton blends keep you comfortable, while a modern design adds some chic to your at-home look.

In conclusion, Sunday fashion is all about balancing comfort and style. Whether you prefer dresses, skirts, or casual outfits, there are plenty of options to look effortlessly chic. By choosing pieces that suit your personality and the activities of the day, you can enjoy a stylish and relaxing Sunday.

Hassan Tampuli questions Mahama’s decision to cut sod for new Hajj Village already under construction

0

Former Deputy Minister for Transport under the immediate past Akufo-Addo government, Hassan Tampuli, has expressed shock by an announcement that President John Mahama is scheduled to cut sod for the commencement of work for a new Hajj Village in Accra.

A poster, which has been shared by Mahama’s new Hajj Task Force on its official Facebook page, has announced President Mahama will cut sod for the construction of a new Hajj Village.

Hassan Tampuli, who was Deputy Transport Minister in charge of Aviation confirmed on his Facebook page last night that the project President Mahama is scheduled to signal its commencement Friday, February 28, has already been going on since last year, under the NPP Government.

“Did I hear President John Mahama is going to cut sod for a new Hajj Village in Accra tomorrow (Friday)?,” Hassan Tampuli asked sarcastically.

“This project has been going on since last year and it is the initiative of the former Minister for Transport, Hon. Kweku Asiamah, with Ghana Airport Company Limited and the Hajj Board as the implementing bodies,” Hassan Tampuli shared on his Facebook page.

Hassan Tampuli’s post reflected multiple other posts on social media, mostly by members of the Zongo/Muslim community, expressing surprise at the decision by the new government and President Mahama, to cut sod for the start of a project which has been going on with visible progress.

The new Hajj Village under construction is minutes away from the present Hajj Village, and opposite the Action Chapel on the Spintex Road.

Ghana’s First Female Vice President Ignites Calls for Gender Progress – Foreign Minister

0

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hailed Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s groundbreaking ascent to the nation’s second-highest office as a pivotal moment for gender equality, declaring it a beacon of hope for future generations of Ghanaian girls.

In a social media post celebrating her historic swearing-in, Ablakwa underscored the symbolic and practical significance of her role, stating: “This is not merely ceremonial—it’s a transformative signal to our daughters that no ambition is beyond their reach.”

Opoku-Agyemang, a former Education Minister and academic, became Ghana’s first female vice president following the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) electoral victory in December 2024. Her appointment marks a milestone in a country where women hold just 14.5% of parliamentary seats, lagging behind the African average of 24%, according to 2023 data from the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Advocates argue her visibility could dismantle entrenched cultural barriers in a society where traditional gender roles often limit women’s political participation.

“Representation matters profoundly,” Ablakwa wrote, emphasizing that Opoku-Agyemang’s career—from university chancellor to vice president—offers a tangible blueprint for young women aspiring to leadership. Expectations are now mounting for her to leverage her position to advance policies addressing systemic inequities, such as Ghana’s gender pay gap (29% as of 2022) and low female enrollment in STEM fields (22% at the tertiary level). Critics, however, caution that symbolic wins must translate into concrete reforms.

The vice president’s rise aligns with gradual shifts across Africa, where Rwanda (61% female MPs) and Tanzania (37%) have made strides in gender parity. Yet Ghana’s progress remains uneven. While the 2024 elections saw a record 136 women contest parliamentary seats—up from 125 in 2020—only 40 secured victories. Opoku-Agyemang’s supporters urge her to champion legislation such as the long-stalled Affirmative Action Bill, which proposes reserving 30% of public offices for women.

Political analysts stress the dual burden she faces: balancing ceremonial duties with substantive advocacy. “Her success hinges on whether she can transition from a figurehead to a policymaker,” noted Accra-based gender researcher Dr. Akosua Adomako. “Ghanaian women need more than inspiration—they need childcare support, equal land rights, and protection from workplace discrimination.”

For now, Opoku-Agyemang’s mere presence in Jubilee House has rekindled debates about inclusivity in a nation ranked 109th out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s 2023 Gender Gap Index. As Ablakwa’s post resonated across social media, grassroots groups like the Women’s Manifesto Coalition echoed calls for systemic change, declaring: “This is a beginning, not an endpoint. Let her office be the engine that drives equality from boardrooms to farmlands.”

The world will be watching whether Ghana’s glass-ceiling moment evolves into a legacy—or remains a footnote in history.

Liverpool open 13-point gap as Arsenal held by Forest

Liverpool opened up a 13-point lead in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United as closest pursuers Arsenal played out a 0-0 stalemate at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

If the weekend’s results appeared to have given Liverpool one hand on the trophy, Arne Slot’s team now seem unstoppable.

Goals in each half by Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister were enough for Liverpool to see off Newcastle who slipped one place in the table to sixth.

Szoboszlai struck in the 11th minute when Luis Diaz cut the ball back for the Hungarian whose shot beat Nick Pope.

Mac Allister doubled the home side’s lead in the 63rd minute after Mohamed Salah picked him out.

Liverpool have come through a testing run of fixtures with a draw away at Aston Villa followed by wins against Manchester City and now Newcastle and only a calamitous slump can deny the club a 20th English league title.

Arsenal’s defeat by West Ham at the weekend knocked the stuffing out of the London club and while manager Mikel Arteta vowed not to give up the chase, a 0-0 draw at Forest was another nail in the coffin of their title dream.

Liverpool have 67 points from 28 games with Arsenal on 54, albeit having one game in hand. Forest have 48 points.

Manchester City climbed back into the top four as Erling Haaland scored the only goal at Tottenham Hotspur.

Haaland slotted in from close range in the 12th minute to become only the second player to score at least 20 goals in his first three Premier League campaigns.

The other player to manage that feat was Ruud van Nistelrooy for Manchester United from 2001-02 to 2003-04.

Manchester United were involved in a thriller against struggling Ipswich Town, eventually winning 3-2 with a Harry Maguire goal despite being down to 10 men.

A dreadful defensive mix-up gifted Ipswich an early lead through Jaden Philogene.

United turned the match on its head though as an own goal by Ipswich captain Sam Morsy and Matthijs de Ligt’s close-range finish put the hosts in front after 26 minutes.

Patrick Dorgu was sent off two minutes before the break for a late lunge on Omari Hutchinson and Philogene scored again to send third-from-bottom Ipswich in level.

But United’s 10 men took the points as Maguire popped up to send Ipswich deeper into relegation trouble.

United are 14th with 33 points while Ipswich are five points from the safety zone after a sixth defeat in seven games..-Reuters
