Minority boycotts vetting, rejects Srem-Sai, Suhuyini nominations

The Minority Caucus has announced its decision to reject the nomination of Dr. Justice Srem-Sai as Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate following a contentious vetting session that ended abruptly due to a heated exchange between Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, and Ranking Member, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin.

During the vetting on Wednesday, February 26,2025, tensions escalated when the Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee and Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin requested the nominee to demonstrate a traditional dance, emphasising the importance of cultural understanding.

Bernard Ahiafor deemed the request inappropriate and overruled it, leading to a sharp disagreement.

Subsequently Afenyo-Markin accused Ahiafor of being whimsical and capricious, while Bernard Ahiafor demanded a retraction, asserting his authority over the proceedings.

Afenyo-Markin firmly stated that the Minority has rejected the nomination of Dr. Srem-Sai as Deputy Attorney General following the heated dispute.

“We are protesting your conduct in abruptly ending the nominee’s vetting on the grounds that I refused to withdraw my dissatisfaction with your ruling. I described your actions as whimsical and capricious, and I also noted that you rudely made those expressions.

“We do not think that, in the spirit of cooperation, you should put up such a posture,” he noted.

Afenyo-Markin further accused Bernard Ahiafor of bias in handling proceedings, citing an earlier incident involving Member of Parliament of Weija/Gbawe, Ahmed Jerry Shaib, whom they claim was also unfairly interrupted.

“The Attorney General himself interrupted, yet you curiously claimed you never heard him. Then the Majority Chief Whip also disrupted the session, though not into the microphone. This was clearly meant to obstruct the process. Eventually, you allowed him to ask a so-called follow-up question,” he added.

He noted that despite smooth vetting sessions since Monday, February 24, 2025, they have also rejected the nominations of Alhassan Suhuyini, Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways-designate who had been vetted already, Sulemana Yussif, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources-designate, and Yussif Issaka Jajah, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts-designate.

The Minority eventually staged a walkout from the vetting.

Alhaji Grusah picks Kwesi Nyantakyi over Kurt Okraku as best GFA president

Kwesi Nyantakyi and Kurt Okraku Kwesi Nyantakyi and Kurt Okraku

Owner of King Faisal Football Club, Alhaji Karim Grusah, has stated that Kwesi Nyantakyi performed better than Kurt Okraku as President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

He justified that Nyantakyi was someone who paid attention to criticisms and took the positives out of them to improve the fortunes of his administration.

However, Kurt Okraku does not have such a trait because he does not listen to advice from people when things are going wrong, which complicates things for his administration.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Alhaji Grusah accused the current GFA boss of being a dishonest person, adding that his advice has gone unheeded.

“Nyantakyi was sincere in doing good things, but Kurt is not like that. He called me in the new year, and because I have eye problems, I asked who called, and someone said, ‘It’s your son Kurt.’ He does not want the truth, and due to that, you can’t even help,” he said in Twi when quizzed on the performance of both presidents.

Okraku has faced criticisms from some football personalities, players, and journalists over the abysmal performances of the various national teams.

The Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the tragic demise of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong also known as Pooley and other issues infuriated most Ghanaians, who expressed their fury towards the GFA.

Sudan military plane crashes in residential area

The Wadi Seidna air base is an important hub for the military near Khartoum The Wadi Seidna air base is an important hub for the military near Khartoum

At least 46 people have been killed and 10 others injured after a Sudanese military plane crashed in a residential neighbourhood in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum, state media says.

The Russian-built Antonov aircraft came down after take-off from the military’s Wadi Seidna air base on Tuesday evening.

The cause of the crash, which killed military officers and civilians, is unclear – but military sources have been quoted as saying that it was likely to have been a technical malfunction.

The crash came a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) – which is at war with the army – said it had downed a fighter jet in South Darfur.

The conflict has devastated large parts of Sudan – including Khartoum and Omdurman – with thousands of people killed and about 12 million displaced.

The health ministry said that emergency teams rushed injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital following Tuesday’s plane crash.

A senior army commander in Khartoum was among those killed, Reuters news agency quoted unnamed military sources as saying.

Witnesses said there was a loud explosion and several homes were damaged when the plane came down, the AFP news agency reports.

The crash also caused power outages in nearby neighbourhoods, it added.

Sudan has been in a civil war that began in April 2023 after the army and the RSF became involved in a vicious power struggle.

The war has split the country, with the army controlling the north and the east while the RSF holds most of the Darfur region in the west and parts of the south.

In recent weeks, the army has retaken parts of Khartoum and surrounding areas from the RSF.

A group of SHS students are trending after they were recorded in a video rejoicing over the foods in their dining halls since the NDC government came into power.

According to the girls, who were in their dining halls, the quality of food has gotten exponentially better since the NDC took power.

They showed off a pot of waakye they were about to eat with each student receiving two eggs.

The ladies praised the NDC government for bringing them good food and logged off by using the NDC’s popular ‘eye zu’ slogan.

Social media users attacked the girls who appeared to just be having fun by describing them as block-headed.

According to netizens, they did not praise the leader who gave them free education but rather praising the leader who gave them food.

“Somebody pay fees, another person take Waakye ne kosua win heart 😂😂😂,” one user wrote.

Another said: “Hmm. U don’t praise the man who gave you free education but the one who is giving you egg. Blackman mentality,”

EC officials don’t attend swearing-ins without invitation

0

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has clarified that it is not the commission’s policy for its members, including the chairperson and deputies, to attend swearing-in ceremonies unless they receive an official invitation.

Speaking at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Wednesday, February 26, to review the 2024 general elections, Jean Mensa revealed that the commission did not receive an invitation to attend the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama or any ministerial inaugurations.

Her remarks come in response to questions about her absence at President Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony.

Mahama was officially sworn in on January 7, 2025, at Black Star Square in Accra, marking the start of his second term after securing victory in the 2024 general elections. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, political leaders, and citizens who gathered to witness the event.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo administered the oath of office, reaffirming Mahama’s commitment to serving Ghana and upholding the Constitution.

Addressing the matter, Jean Mensa stated: “I was here in the country, but per policy, the commission members, chairperson, and deputies don’t attend swearing-ins. Indeed, it is also by invitation, and we have never received an invitation to the swearing-in.

“I know that dignitaries and special guests are invited. But it has always been a matter of policy that we do not attend swearing-in ceremonies. At least for the duration that we have been in office, we have never attended any swearing-in ceremony,” she explained.

NPP Will Have Gotten Less than 38% if Elections were Held in August Instead of December – Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu

0

The former long-time Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Honourable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has revealed that he knew ahead of the December 7th elections that the NPP will lose.

According to him, he came to the conclusion after witnessing the lack of enthusiasm their campaign was generating ahead of the polls, which told him that Ghanaians were fed up with the NPP.

Speaking during an interview on Nhyira FM in Kumasi, the former Minister of Parliamentary Affairs said the lack of enthusiasm was particularly evident during the early part of the campaign.

He said they were able to generate a bit more enthusiasm which even ended up making their loss look a bit better. Mensah-Bonsu said if the elections had been held in August, the NPP would have lost by an even worser margin than the infamous 38.2% that people use to troll them.

Reactions to his video included: “I was shocked he never mentioned corruption, mismanagement & disrespect towards Ghanaians,”

Another one said: “They knew there was a huge loss ahead of them and decided worsen the state of country for the coming government,”

SEND Ghana calls for National Budgetary allocation for Epidermic Preparedness

0

By Linda Naa Deide Aryeetey / Dorcas Stephens

Accra, Feb. 26. GNA- SEND Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) focused on advocacy for pro-poor policies, has urged the government to make national budgetary allocations to Epidermic Preparedness and Response (EPR).

The organisation  said while outbreaks could not be prevented, they can be effectively managed if the nation was well prepared.

Speaking at a National Dialogue on Public Health Emergency Financing in Ghana, Madam Harriet Nuamah Agyemang, Country Director, SEND Ghana, said preparing for epidemics required investment in health worker training, surveillance and infrastructure with a focus on mobilising domestic resources rather than relying on global funds.

“This year, we are looking forward to a budget that includes funding for Public Health Emergencies in Ghana, we anticipate that the government will prioritise this to safeguard the health of the people,” she said.

Madam Agyemang cited the lack of a dedicated fund for preparedness and specific budget line for epidemic preparedness and response as issues which needed the urgent attention of the government.

“Epidermic preparedness is important, and we need funding to do that, we must not depend on global funding anymore, we need to look inward, mobilise funds from our domestic resources and set it aside for epidemics,” she stressed.

Madam Agyemang encouraged Local Government Authorities to also set aside funds for Public Health Emergencies at the District and Municipal level.

She commended the Adaklu and Aligye Kwabre districts for including Epidermic Preparedness Response in their 2023 to 2024 budgets for the first time and recognised several assemblies like the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Keta North, Birim South for consistently increasing funding for emergency preparedness and response.

Madam Agyemang mentioned that four districts; Lower Manya Krobo, Birim South, Lambussie and Gushegu, were at various stages of setting up district public health emergency fund.

Mr Rex Manu Yeboah, Deputy Director, General Administration at the Ministry of Local Government encouraged Local Government Authorities to find innovative ways to finance Epidermic Preparedness and Response, stating that it was more cost effective to prevent an epidemic than to respond when it had escalated.

The Dialogue served as a platform to assess progress made in Send Ghana’s efforts in advocating the provision of a Domestic Fund for Public Health Emergencies in Ghana highlighting it as a vital step to ensuring that Ghana is well equipped to manage future health crises.

Napo’s selection as running mate negatively impacted NPP’s fortunes – KNUST research reveals

0

The selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had a detrimental effect on the New Patriotic Party’s fortunes in the 2024 general elections.

This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the Department of History and Political Science Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The key findings;

The study revealed that 85.45% of respondents are aware of Dr. Prempeh’s candidacy.

However, opinions on his influence are divided, with 47.29% believing he negatively impacts the campaign and 32.24% viewing him positively. Satisfaction with Dr. Prempeh’s performance is largely negative, with 36.31% very unsatisfied.

In contrast, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum is preferred by 53.14% of respondents as the ideal running mate and is seen as having the most positive impact by 58.56%.

The research on the prospects of the 2024 election, conducted by the Department of History and Political Science at the KNUST, was based on public perception and preference of the NPP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Lead researcher, Professor Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, sheds light on the findings.

“The data reveals mixed perception and a notable 47.29% of respondents, who believes that Dr. Prempeh negatively impacted the campaign,” he said.

Prof. Adu Gyamfi made some recommendations for Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s candidacy going forward.

“The running mate in any political party should potentially, if not galvanize support, serve as an icing on the cake of the campaign” he warned.

Dr. Amakye Boateng, a Political Scientist at the KNUST, also cited public dissatisfaction towards the NPP’s running mate.

The conclusion of the findings indicates that while Dr. Prempeh is widely recognised, his candidacy faces significant challenges due to dissatisfaction and mixed perceptions of his impact.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum is perceived as a more favourable choice, suggesting that his proven track record and public appeal could offer strategic advantages for the NPP.

To enhance campaign effectiveness, addressing public dissatisfaction and aligning candidate selection with voter expectations will be crucial for the NPP’s success going forward.

Goosie Tanoh defends revocation of last-minute Public Service appointments

0

Presidential Advisor for the 24-hour economy, Goosie Obuadum Tanoh, has defended the government’s decision to revoke all public sector appointments and recruitments made after the December 7 elections.

He emphasized the need for responsible hiring decisions, insisting such measures are necessary to prevent the collapse of institutions already burdened by an unsustainable wage bill.

His remarks follow a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah on February 11, 2025, ordering the revocation of public service appointments and recruitments made after December 7.

Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, justified government’s decision and accused the previous Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration of bypassing due process in making last-minute public service appointments.

Speaking on the sidelines of a symposium organized by the Africa Center for Governance and Economic Management (ACGEM) on February 26, 2025, in Accra, Tanoh explained that the measure is necessary to prevent institutions from collapsing, as no budgetary provisions were made for these recruitments.

“As a responsible government that wants to see change, it is important to balance costs with revenues. We cannot hire people reck and leave institutions to suffer. Some of these actions are necessary to save those institutions from collapsing because the wage bill is high. Unfortunately, nobody wants to see a fellow Ghanaian out of work but the reality is that many of these appointments were made without considering the employment budget, hiring plan, or HR budget,” he stated.

Black Queens’ Friendly Against Raja Casablanca Canceled

0

The Black Queens’ scheduled friendly match against Moroccan side Raja Casablanca Athletic Women has been canceled.

The match, set for February 24 at 4:30 PM, was called off due to “circumstances beyond our control,” according to a statement shared on the Ghana Women’s National Team’s official X account.

This game was part of the team’s training camp in Morocco as they prepare for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Queens were eager to bounce back after a narrow 1-0 loss to the Atlas Lionesses last Friday, where Saoud Imane scored a stoppage-time winner.

The cancellation is a setback for the team, which had hoped to use the match to build momentum and confidence ahead of their continental campaign. The Black Queens will now look to make the most of their remaining preparations before the tournament begins.

Ibrahim Tanko gives insight into Micheal Osei’s death

0

Medeama head coach Ibrahim Tanko has shed light on the passing of former Asante Kotoko coach Michael Osei, revealing that he succumbed to heart complications.

Tanko made the revelation during a roundtable discussion with former Black Stars players on the Inside PFAG YouTube channel.

He confirmed that Michael Osei had a history of heart problems and had undergone surgery, though he was uncertain about the exact location of the procedure.

“I think his passing was related to his heart. Yes, he had surgery. I believe it was in London,” Tanko stated.

“I spoke with him while he was in Germany. He went to London before arriving in Germany, so I’m not sure whether he had the operation in England or Germany.”

Tanko’s statement aligns with earlier remarks from Tony Oduro, the secretary of Asante Kotoko Legends, who also cited heart issues as the cause of Osei’s death.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Oduro disclosed that the former Bibiani Gold Stars coach had been fitted with a heart enhancer due to his condition.

“He collapsed. Michael had heart issues and had a heart enhancer, but I can’t confirm if that was the cause,” Oduro said. “I spoke with him last Thursday, and he mentioned receiving offers from Ghanaian clubs but was waiting on Klopp. They were teammates, and he said Klopp was willing to help him secure a coaching role.”

Michael Osei, who had taken a break from coaching in 2023, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the age of 53.

One of the most influential rappers in Central Region of Ghana Okintoe  has revealed the challenges Musicians are currently facing at Central Music Awards.

According to the rapper, Central region musicians are paid  only 2000ghc for shows including the just-ended Central Music Awards. Meanwhile, musicians billed from other regions are paid huge amounts of money.

Speaking in a recent interview with Kofy Jesse TV, Rapper Okintoe expressed frustration with the Central Music Awards and how Cape Coast-based musicals are mistreated. The artist claimed that the just-ended awards event was poorly managed, leading to a negative experience for performers.

Furthermore, the musician alleged disparities in compensation for performers, with some receiving significantly more than others. This has raised concerns about fairness and transparency in the music industry.

While the specifics of this situation are unclear, it highlights the importance of proper organization and fair treatment of performers at music events. Event organizers must prioritize performers’ needs and concerns to ensure a positive experience for all involved.

The music industry is built on the talents and hard work of its performers. As such, they must be treated with respect and fairness.

“We don’t only need strong, brave and firm leadership to lead, manage and oversee the affairs of the NPP from now till December 2028, we also need assertive, sincere, truthful and trustworthy persons who will not be held by personal feelings or opinions, yield to ‘God-fathers’ or influence peddlers or be manipulated by backstage ‘power brokers,’” he stated.

GIDA engineers assess challenges at Weta Irrigation Scheme

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Weta (V/R), Feb. 26, GNA – A team of engineers and officials from the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) has visited the Weta Irrigation Scheme to assess the critical challenges affecting rice farmers in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region.

The inspection tour was aimed at identifying immediate and long-term solutions to restore the scheme’s efficiency and safeguard the livelihoods of over 1,200 farming families.

Speaking with GNA, after the visit, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Mr. Eric Edem Agbana, assured farmers that urgent measures would be taken in the coming weeks to provide short-term relief before the start of the new farming season.

“Our priority is to restore the scheme as quickly as possible so that farmers can reclaim their lands and prepare for the next planting season. This is crucial in preventing further losses and ensuring food security in the region,” Mr. Agbana said.

He added that long-term rehabilitation efforts would also be implemented in the next few months to make the irrigation scheme sustainable for farmers.

The Weta Irrigation Scheme, one of the largest in the country, has fallen into a state of disrepair, threatening over 1,000 hectares of arable land, and affecting the incomes of thousands of people.

The breakdown of infrastructure, including irrigation canals and water pumps, has reduced the scheme’s efficiency, leaving farmers struggling to cultivate their fields.

The economic impact has been severe, with over 10,000 indirect dependents across 23 surrounding communities facing difficulties due to declining agricultural productivity.

Mr Agbana reassured farmers that he remains committed to fully resolving the crisis and ensuring that they can return to productive farming.

“To the over 1,200 families affected by this crisis, I want you to know that I will not rest until this issue is fully resolved. Our farmers are the backbone of our community, and their success is our collective success,” he said.

He also promised transparency and open governance, pledging to keep the public informed of every step taken to rehabilitate the irrigation system.

“As I promised during the election campaign, I will ensure transparent and open governance, keeping you informed every step of the way. We are in this together, my dear farmers,” he assured.

The visit by GIDA engineers marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing issues affecting the Weta Irrigation Scheme.

Farmers remain hopeful that the government’s intervention will restore the scheme’s functionality and boost rice production in the region.

Meanwhile, stakeholders, including local authorities and agricultural experts, are expected to collaborate to ensure a lasting solution to the challenges facing the irrigation project.

‘Use Consultative Approach To Enforce Regulations’

0

Jerry Owusu, General Secretary of LPG

The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has urged the Ministry of Communications and the National Communications Authority (NCA) to consider a more consultative approach to regulatory enforcement on the six radio stations that have been shut down.

According to the LPG, instead of immediate shutdowns, the two authorities should have engaged the affected media houses, provided clear and considerable timelines for compliance, and explored flexible payment arrangements to ensure struggling businesses meet their obligations without being forced to close.

The General Secretary of LPG, Jerry Owusu, in a press statement dated February 19, 2025, stated that the media serves as a vital pillar of the country’s democracy, providing a voice for the people, facilitating national discourse and creating employment opportunities.

It would be recalled that the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, on February 18, directed the Acting Director General of the NCA to take immediate enforcement action against several entities for operating without valid frequency authorisations in violation of Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

The entities affected include Fire Group of Companies, Sunyani-90.1 MHz; I-Zar Consult Limited, Tamale- 89.7MHz; Abochannel Media Group, Adidome-105.7MHz; Okyeamen Radio Limited, Bibiani- 99.7MHz; Mumin Bono Foundation, Techiman-99.7MHz and Osikani Community FM – Nkrankwanta-99.7MHz.

The Communications Ministry, in a statement on Tuesday, February 18, noted that the six radio stations failed to renew their authorisations, fulfil statutory payment obligations, or submit the required documentation within the stipulated timeframe.

But, while acknowledging the importance of regulatory compliance, the LPG strongly believe that a more constructive approach could have been taken to prevent job losses, especially in these difficult economic times.

“The abrupt shutdown of these stations without thorough engagement and alternative solutions has put the hardworking journalists and media workers at risk of unemployment. This decision will not only affect those directly employed by the affected stations but also their families and dependents, worsening the economic hardship many Ghanaians are already facing,” the LPG General Secretary asserted.

He extended his sympathy to the affected media houses and their employees, who now face uncertainty due to this decision, encouraging them to engage with the NCA, take the necessary steps toward compliance, and explore all possible measures to have their licenses reinstated.

The LPG, he noted, remains committed to advocating for a regulatory environment that supports businesses while ensuring adherence to the law.

Scrapping ex-gratia may be faster depending on approach – Srem-Sai

0

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister Designate for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has indicated that the scrapping of ex-gratia, as promised by President John Dramani Mahama, could be achieved through various approaches, with some taking less time than others.

In June 2024, then-flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, reaffirmed his commitment to abolishing ex-gratia payments to public officials if elected. He also pledged to address disparities in the remuneration of Article 71 officeholders compared to the broader public service.

“Abolish the payment of ex-gratia and cut out waste and ostentation in government. Address the disparities in the remuneration of Article 71 officeholders and the broader public service,” Mahama declared while launching the NDC’s manifesto in Winneba, Central Region, on August 24, 2024.

During his vetting before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Justice Srem-Sai explained that while amending Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution is one way to eliminate ex-gratia, it is a lengthy and complex process.

However, an alternative approach involving regular legislation could provide a faster solution.

“There are a couple of ways by which the ex-gratia matter can be dealt with. One could be through a constitutional amendment. If you read Article 71 critically, the Constitution itself doesn’t prescribe a formula for determining the remuneration and entitlements of the specified class of persons. It only states that a committee will determine that.

“Last year, the committee sought to expand the list of beneficiaries, but the Supreme Court halted it. What I see is that it is the committee’s recommendation that is the problem. That can be resolved by passing an act of parliament to prescribe the formula,” he stated.

He further suggested that instead of abolishing ex-gratia through a constitutional amendment, which could be time-consuming, parliament could pass a law regulating the committee’s recommendations.

“If you want to go by the constitution, it will take a longer time. But you could solve that problem with regular legislation. It could determine what the committee recommends. If the committee decides there will be no payment or recommends any payment, parliament may approve it, and the president may also approve that of parliament. So, depending on the approach used, the process could be either long or short,” he added.

Ignorant, disrespectful, insulting – FOCAP slams Tolon MP over demeaning ‘movie industry’ remark

0

Habib Iddrisu and Kojo Preko Dankwa Habib Iddrisu and Kojo Preko Dankwa

President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), Kojo Preko Dankwa, has strongly criticised the Member of Parliament of Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, for his recent comments during the vetting of Deputy Minister of Agriculture-designate, John Dumelo.

Iddrisu has been under fire from some industry personalities and netizens on social media after he advised Dumelo, a former actor, to focus on his role as he was “no longer in the movie industry” and that he should be “as serious as he can.”

However, speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie on February 26, 2025, Dankwa described the MP’s remarks as ignorant, disrespectful, and insulting to the creative arts industry.

“Frankly speaking, the MP has clearly shown ignorance. He has clearly shown disrespect. He shouldn’t forget that he’s sitting there talking into a microphone, which is a product of creativity. The clothes he’s wearing were made by a creative. Without creatives, he would have gone naked,” Dankwa stated.

He emphasised the vital role creatives play in society and demanded that the MP apologises for his comments.

“It was very insulting for him to say what he said. He should apologise to the industry. We are not going to sit down for anybody to use any language on us,” Dankwa added.

Dankwa also called for a shift in the perception of creatives in Ghana, arguing that such outdated views have been disadvantageous to the sector for too long.

“The narrative needs to change. We’ve held onto the old perception that becoming a lawyer or doctor is more important than being a creative. Little do we know that creatives are among the most important people in our lives,” he said.

He urged creatives to take charge of their narrative and advocate for their value in nation-building.

“If we as creatives begin to tell our own stories correctly, we can rewrite the history of creatives in this space. Unfortunately, many of us are still waiting for someone else to do it for us. It has to start now, or we’ll pass the same outdated perceptions to our children,” Dankwa emphasised.

The comments have reignited discussions about the value of creatives in Ghana, with many calling for greater recognition and support for the industry.

Supreme Court refuses NPP MP Kumi audience for disrespecting High Court

0

The Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi The Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi

The Supreme Court has reportedly thrown out embattled New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi, according to GhOne TV.

The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, when the NPP MP appeared before the apex court of the land.

The court refused to give Yaw Kumi audience, stating that he refused to show respect to the High Court that convicted him.

“Supreme Court refuses to grant audience to Ernest Yaw Kumi, stating he has failed to show respect to the Koforidua High Court,” a post shared by GhOne TV on Wednesday.

A Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant for Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Akwatia in the Eastern Region, after convicting him of contempt of court.

According to multiple reports, the bench warrant was issued after Kumi failed to appear in court.

The MP had disobeyed an interim injunction issued on January 7, 2025, which barred him from being sworn in and admitted as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency due to an ongoing legal dispute over his election.

Despite the court order, Kumi presented himself in Parliament and was sworn in on January 7, 2025.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that the convict had consistently failed to appear in court throughout the contempt case.

He also dismissed a letter from the Minority Caucus, which argued that the MP was occupied with parliamentary duties and, therefore, could not attend court sessions.

The judge rejected the letter, stating that accepting it would contradict his ruling.

Yaw Kumi’s party, the NPP, announced that a legal action would be made against the justice who convicted him at the Supreme Court.

Addressing the press at Parliament on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the MP of Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, reading a statement on behalf of the caucus, stated that multiple legal actions had been taken in response to the judge’s ruling, including an application before the Supreme Court.

“At this stage, let me further state that legal steps have been taken, and a notice of appeal has been filed against the High Court’s ruling at the Court of Appeal. An application for a stay of execution pending appeal has also been filed at High Court Number 3 in Koforidua.

“Moreover, all parties to the prohibition application, including the judge, His Lordship Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, who is the respondent in this application before the Supreme Court, have been duly served. Further legal steps will be taken, and the Minority Caucus in Parliament will keep the Ghanaian public informed on the way forward,” he said.

The Weija-Gbawe legislator also argued that the High Court judge erred in his ruling. He stated that it was improper for the judge to demand the filing of an appearance in a quasi-criminal matter.

“When someone previously came before you, you allowed the person to open a phone to provide details of a certain WhatsApp message or publication. But when a lawyer stands in for a client in a contempt matter, you insist the lawyer must file an appearance in a quasi-criminal case? Eii, Justice Senyo Amedahe,” he said.

Deputy finance minister’s performance at vetting was disappointing

Godfred Bokpin is a professor of finance and economics at the University of Ghana Godfred Bokpin is a professor of finance and economics at the University of Ghana

A professor of finance and economics at the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has shared his thoughts on the performance of the Deputy Minister of Finance-nominee Thomas Nyarko Ampem.

Thomas Nyarko Ampem appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, February 24, 2025, for his vetting.

During his vetting, he identified the economic challenges that need to be addressed and proposed solutions to the challenges.

In a conversation on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Prof. Godfred analysed the performance of the deputy minister nominee, observing that the nominee could have demonstrated a deeper understanding of his portfolio.

He emphasised that the nominee will have the opportunity to learn under the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

“Well, he may not have delivered consistently on our expectations, but I believe that he would learn from this and take advantage to be able to assert himself,” he stated.

Prof Bokpin noted that Thomas Nyarko Ampem did not provide detailed answers to the questions, but relied on general statements.

“There is nothing wrong, and it is not a case of you trying to outshine your minister or so, but within your own space, having listened to the minister during the vetting, you want to be able to fill in the gaps, you want to be able to tighten the loose ends.

“From that perspective, I felt that he could have done better. I was a bit disappointed” he added.

Pro Bokpin concluded that the president shouldn’t rely solely on reducing the number of ministers as a way to solve problems, but also focus on solving the systematic challenges facing the country.

“The over-concentration on cutting the number of ministers and ministries, and all of that, a time will come when that will not have economic value going forward,” he said.

World Cup is the best football tournament

0

West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus has described the FIFA World Cup as the pinnacle of football, ranking it above all other competitions.

He had his first taste of the tournament in 2022 when the Black Stars competed in Qatar. Despite Ghana’s early exit, Kudus made a strong impression, scoring two goals in three appearances and being named Man-of-the-Match.

Speaking to Rising Ballers, Kudus expressed his admiration for the tournament.

“I think the World Cup is the best football tournament. The Champions League is up there, but the World Cup was just different in Qatar, my first time,” he said. “My family flew all the way to support, so it was an amazing feeling.”

Though Ghana fell short of progressing further, Kudus cherished the experience.

“We didn’t go as far as I would have loved us to go, but it was nice to experience the World Cup. To be part of it was great,” he added.

The 24-year-old now has his sights set on helping Ghana qualify for the 2026 World Cup, following the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“E tell me say if I try to escape, e go kill me.”

Pascaline, 22, recall di words of her rapist for one prison for Goma, di largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in di early hours of 27 January.

“I dey forced to let am happun instead of losing my life,” Pascaline tell di BBC.

Im be di second man to rape her for Munzenze prison. Di first attack bin dey so violent to di level wey she faint.

Her attackers come over di wall from di men block and wey dey right next door called “Safina”, she tok.

“We hear noise as dem jump on di water tanks. Dem dey so many, and we bin dey fear well-wll. Di ones wey dey unlucky dem rape. Di ones wey dey lucky go out without being raped.”

Kasala spread through di jail, and di surrounding city. Rwandan-backed M23 rebels bin dey close in on Goma, after a rapid advance through di region.

Most of di prison guards and di city authorities don already fled. Dem dey hear shooting outside di jail.

Hours later, inside di compound, fire dey burn – apparently set by male prisoners as dem try to escape.

By morning, about 4,000 male inmates don break out. But few of the women manage to get away. A total of 132 female prisoners and at least 25 children burn to death, according to two sources.

One UN official tell di BBC say “at least 153 women bin perish”, quoting “reliable sources for di prison”.

Afta one month, Pascaline come back to di destroyed part of di prison complex, wia one empty watch tower still dey stand.

She wan tell her story and dey willing to show her face. She also give voice for di dead.

She waka through di main yard of di women section, dey look at di scorched walls, scattered cooking pots and piles of clothing. Her hand cover to her mouth in wordless horror, and she shake her head.

“At one point I no know wetin bin dey happun again,” she tok. “Na afta I see di odas die na im I begin to pull myself togeda, I go say na God wey wan save me.”

Pascaline, na onion seller, wey find herself for prison here wen her employer accuse her say she tiff.

“Wen I sleep for night, evritin I see hia dey come back to me. I see di dead again – as many dead bodies as I see here until I get out. Instead of opening di door, dem allow us die like animals hia.”

Nadine say she too bin also dey raped by two men.

“Dem come wit alcohol,” she tell di BBC. “Dem bin wan drug pipo. Dem take me by force. Dem take all di women hia.”

Di BBC no fit verify how many women bin dey raped dat night, out of a total of 167 wey, sources say, bin dey held.

Nadine dey vex wit di authorities – for locking her up in di first place over debt wey she dey owe, she tok, and den failing to let her out.

“I no think say justice fit exist in Congo,” she tok. “I condemn di way di goment dey run tinz.”

Di DR Congo goment – more dan 1,500km (1,000 miles) away in di capital Kinshasa – no longer dey run anytin for Goma. Di rebels dey in full control and dem kontinu to advance south to di east.

Among di piles of ash wey carpet di prison floor after di fire, dia is a tiny pink sandal, wey dey burnt on one side. Some shiny buttons glitter for di dorti beside am, perhaps from children’s clothing.

Women prisoners bin dey allowed to keep one of dia children in di jail wit dem. Only two children out of 28 survive di blaze in di prison, according to a source. Child prisoners – wey bin dey held in a separate block – bin dey released earlier in di day.

No be just di smoke and di flames wey kill di weakest, according to a detailed account from anoda survivor aged 38, wey no want to be identified. We go call her Florence.

She say “children start to die” wen dem fire tear gas into di women section.

“Di prison bin dey surrounded by soldiers and police wey, instead of coming to put out di fire, bin dey fire bullets and throw tear gas at us,” Florence tok.

“Wen dem drop di tear gas on us, di fire become intense. Our eyes begin pepper us as if dem pour chilli pepper inside. Dia was almost no way to breathe,” she add.

Di fire and di rapes bin dey covered in confusion, as all sides dey eager to blame someone else.

Human rights groups say rape dey widely used as a weapon of war in DR Congo by both di M23 rebels and goment forces.

However, for dis case, Florence say na fellow inmates.

“You fit see say dem be prisoners. Some come without shoes. Wen dem climb onto di roof of di women’s prison, dem be dey call di names of those wey dem know. And none of di attackers bin dey armed or in uniform.”

Florence say she hear “bullets sound” outside di prison from 23:00 onwards, and police bin dey kill di escaping prisoners outside.

“If a prisoner got out, dem go shoot am. Wen di bullets bin dey fly, I dey on my knees dey beg God to deliver us from dis bad situation.”

Some of di prisoners wey break into di women’s section bin dey look for a safer escape route, she tok.

Dem breach one of di walls facing di outside – a place wia police no normally dey stationed. But soon dat gap come dey filled – by di fire.

Florence first see di flames at about 04:00. Den hour afta hour, she rush from body to body.

“Pipo dey die in front of our eyes. I no fit count dem. We try to revive dem by giving dem water. Some women bin dey suffocated by di fire, as well as di gas. Some die of heart attacks,” Florence tell di BBC.

She too blame di Congolese authorities for di loss of so many lives.

“Di state for open di doors wen dem see di fire or come off am.”

Di BBC don contact di goment in Kinsasha and ask for a response to wetin di survivors don tell us but we never received one.

Florence say dem finally open di women’s prison at 11:00 – she no know who open am – and she come out wit 18 oda survivors. Im no give dem any help.

“Even di policemen we find on di road, no even ask for news of di prisoners, or ask if anyone bin dey hurt, or how we dey,” she tok.

By den rebel fighters bin dey parts of di city, as dem enter at around 08:00. Goma dey fall.

Di women no seem to matter – weda in or out of prison.

For one tent on di grounds of Goma hospital, we meet anoda survivor, Sifa, 25, wey one friend pull out from di fire.

She lie down on her left side – any oda position dey too painful. Her right arm dey heavily bandaged, and e get burn marks on her arm and her face. She also get burns on her back. Time to change her dressings di nurses go give her morphine.

But her agony dey more dan physical.

Her two-year-old daughter Esther die for dat prison.

“I bin carry Esther on my back. Wen we wan escape, sometin fall on her. A bomb? I no know. She die on di spot,” Sifa tell di BBC.

She add say Esther just start to waka and dey “without sin”. Sometimes she go play wit di oda children for di prison, but mostly she dey by her mother side.

How Sifa, a peanut seller, wind up behind bars inside a crowded prison wit her daughter?

She bin dey accused say she dey involved in a robbery, wey she deny. She say she dey jail without conviction. Local sources say dat na common tin.

Di full story of wetin happen for Munzenze Prison may neva be known. E be like say those in power no dey in a rush to find out.

Sifa and di oda survivors we tok to tell us say no-one don contact dem to take dia testimony about di horrors of 27 January – not di rebels in control of Goma now, nor di goment in Kinshasa wey used to run di prison.

“No-one go follow [dis case],” Sifa tok. “No-one go dey pursued. It’s already over.”

Fashion that Empowers and Inspires

0

Children’s fashion is about more than just comfort—it’s also an opportunity to express individuality, creativity, and confidence from a young age. As kids grow, their sense of style begins to take shape, and what they wear can inspire their confidence and creativity. Whether for a special occasion, a day at school, or playtime, here are some inspirational style ideas for kids that combine fun, functionality, and flair.

1. Bold Prints and Patterns

Kids love colors, and bold prints are an excellent way to bring energy and personality into their wardrobes. From floral prints and polka dots to stripes and geometric patterns, these vibrant designs make outfits stand out and express a child’s lively nature. Mixing and matching prints—such as pairing striped shirts with polka dot pants or floral skirts with geometric tops—can create unique looks that show off their creativity. Allowing children to experiment with prints helps them develop their fashion sense and boosts their confidence.

2. Comfortable Athleisure

The rise of athleisure in children’s fashion is not just about comfort, it’s also about style. Sweatpants, joggers, and sporty t-shirts are designed to provide ease of movement while still looking stylish. For a cool and modern look, try pairing graphic tees with color-blocked joggers or a hoodie with denim jeans. The mix of sporty and casual pieces is not only trendy but also gives kids the freedom to play and be active without feeling restricted.

3. Sustainable and Eco-friendly Fashion

Teaching kids the importance of sustainability is essential, and one way to do that is by dressing them in eco-friendly clothing. Many brands now offer clothing made from organic cotton, recycled materials, and eco-conscious dyes. Upcycled fashion, where old clothes are repurposed into new, trendy outfits, is another great way to inspire kids to value sustainability. Eco-friendly fashion is not only good for the planet but also gives children a sense of pride in their wardrobe choices.

4. Classic Denim with a Twist

Denim is a timeless fabric that never goes out of style. For kids, denim jackets, overalls, and jeans are staples that can be styled in a variety of ways. Pairing denim with other materials, like cotton, velvet, or even leather, adds a modern twist to this classic fabric. A denim jacket with patches or embroidered designs can turn a simple piece into something unique. Denim overalls can be worn with t-shirts for a laid-back look or dressed up with accessories for more formal events.

5. Layered Looks for Versatility

Layering is a fun and functional way to add dimension and style to kids’ outfits. Whether it’s a hooded jacket over a t-shirt, a denim vest over a long-sleeve shirt, or cardigans paired with dresses, layering allows kids to adapt their outfits for different weather and occasions. Adding fun scarves, hats, or jewelry as accessories can also bring extra personality to an outfit, creating a more dynamic and creative look.

6. Personalization and Customization

Kids love to wear pieces that reflect their personality. Personalized clothing such as name t-shirts, custom-designed sneakers, or jackets with patches of their favorite characters or hobbies make fashion a fun expression of who they are. These items also become cherished pieces as they carry a personal touch, giving kids a sense of ownership and pride in their outfits.

In Conclusion

Inspirational style ideas for kids go beyond just dressing them in the latest trends. It’s about encouraging self-expression, boosting confidence, and helping children feel good in their clothes. Bold prints, comfortable athleisure, sustainable fashion, classic denim, layered looks, and personalized items all play a role in shaping a child’s unique sense of style. By allowing children to explore different styles, they can develop their creativity, individuality, and confidence, setting the stage for a positive relationship with fashion as they grow.

Supreme Court deliberates on whether to hear Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi’s case

0

Lawyers for Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi were on Wednesday, February 26, prevented from moving a motion to set aside an injunction restraining him from holding himself as a legislator.

A five-member panel led by Justice Gabriel Pwamang questioned whether Kumi had purged himself of contempt before seeking relief from the Supreme Court.

“We are all superior courts, and we are aware that the High Court in Koforidua made orders in the nature of contempt. If you are in contempt, you would purge yourself. You don’t avoid answering it and then you’re given a hearing,” Justice Pwamang stated.

Kumi’s counsel, Gary Nimako Marfo, argued that the High Court had disregarded documents filed by his client and that the Supreme Court motion predated the contempt ruling.

However, Bernard Bediako, counsel for the first interested party, countered that Marfo had already filed another motion seeking to overturn the contempt judgment.

Kumi, who was absent from proceedings, was represented by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

After a brief recess, the court adjourned the matter to March 12 and ordered all parties to file written submissions within seven days.

Supreme Court blocks Koforidua High Court’s sentencing of Ernest Kumi

0

The Supreme Court, in a 4-1 majority decision, has halted the Koforidua High Court from sentencing Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi in a contempt case until a final ruling is made on a motion to overturn the decision.

Justice Gabriel Pwamang dissented, while the remaining four justices on the panel supported the stay.

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi filed a certiorari and prohibition application at the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn a February 19 contempt of court conviction against him.

Counsel for the MP, Gary Nimako Marfo, argues in the application that Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amadehe of the Koforidua High Court committed “a jurisdictional error of law apparent on the face of the record when he assumed jurisdiction in [the] Parliamentary Election Petition at Akwatia Constituency at the time when the Electoral Commission had not published the Gazette Notification of the results to which the Election relates in the Gazette.”

Justice Senyo Amadehe had convicted Ernest Yaw Kumi for contempt of court and issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his defiance of an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Suhuyini proposes use of pension funds to finance infrastructural projects

The Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has initiated discussions with his proposal for pension funds to be utilised in the construction and financing of road infrastructure projects.

During his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Suhuyini suggested that funds, specifically referring to SSNIT, could be redirected towards infrastructure projects.

According to him, pursuing such initiatives would be more beneficial to the state than investing in unprofitable endeavors that impose a burden on it.

“Personally, I think we have to also begin to look at the investment portfolios of some of our pension fund management institutions. For example, the report of SSNIT shows that they invest in luxurious hotels and other assets.

“I wonder if moving forward, some of these funds can now be used to support this very critical infrastructure roads of the country and, just like we are talking about tolling, toll those roads over the years,” he stated.

The Tamale Central lawmaker provided additional examples to strengthen his argument, emphasising that channeling such funds into projects could serve as a valuable investment for the state, with the potential for recouping the expenses.

“For example, if you have an agency supporting the construction of a three-tier dual carriageway from Accra to Kumasi, and have like four tolling stops, for a number of years, that investment can be recouped.

“We all know that pension funds are supposed to have investments for long terms because people who invest in pensions do so for longer terms. So, I think that that conversation should go on and I will be guided by my minister and look at how far the law allows for us to look to those options,” he stated.

Suhuyini was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to a deputy ministerial role.

Ghanaian playwright and entertainment personality, George Quaye, has expressed his dissatisfaction with Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture-designate, John Dumelo, for not ‘educating’ Habib Iddrisu, the MP of Tolon, during his ministerial vetting.

In an interview on Hitz FM on February 26, 2025, George Quaye noted that John Dumelo should have corrected the MP after he cautioned him against taking his political career lightly, emphasising that his role was not within the movie industry.

“I was quite a bit disappointed in my brother John Dumelo for not calling it out right there. But I would not fault him because he was at his vetting and didn’t want to sound rude,” he said.

George Quaye added that he would have corrected Habib Iddrisu if he were in the shoes of John Dumelo.

“If it were me, George Quaye, I would have used this as a perfect opportunity to make a statement for a sector that made me before agric sector discovered me,” he added.

Abronye undergoing NIB interrogation – Nana B confirms

0

Abronye is the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP Abronye is the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP

Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently being questioned by officials at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office at Kawukudi, in Accra, according to Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP’s National Organiser, who is popularly known as Nana B.

In a Facebook update on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Nana B disclosed that he, along with several party executives, accompanied Abronye to the NIB office earlier in the day, following the invitation extended to him by the NIB.

Abronye, according to Nana B, is engaging with NIB officers and is being supported by his legal team, comprising Agyei Baffour Awuah and Enoch Afoakwa.

“This morning, together with some party executives, we accompanied Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office at Kawukudi.

“Abronye is currently engaging with NIB officers, accompanied by his legal representatives, Lawyer Agyei Baffour Awuah and Lawyer Enoch Afoakwa,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Nana B emphasised the party’s unwavering support for its members, stating, “The party remains committed to standing by its members at all times.”

The NIB invited Abronye for questioning over some comments he made in a radio interview against President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Accra-based Movement TV, Abronye accused President Mahama of withholding GH¢550 million intended for dismissed appointees at the Jubilee House.

“The Akufo-Addo government budgeted GH¢550 million for these individuals to be employed. This money comes from taxpayers, yet another government cancels the appointments and allegedly transfers the funds to the Jubilee House. So, what are you doing with the GH¢550 million that was put in bullion vans and sent to the Jubilee House?

“You have revoked people’s appointments, taken their GH¢550 million, and put it in a bullion van. Meanwhile, Mahama and Okudzeto Ablakwa travel every week and have not spent more than three days in the country,” he claimed.

Following his invitation, Abronye reacted, stating that he cannot be intimidated or silenced through the use of state security agencies.

Speaking on Movement TV, the outspoken politician emphasised that he remains resolute in his position on the matter and is eagerly awaiting the scheduled meeting with the NIB.

“I cannot be intimidated by any state security agency. I am not one of those who run away from accountability. Why? Don’t I have the right to question the president on where he’s keeping that money? Is this the Ghana we are building? These people know that both spiritually and physically, they always lose a fight against me. So, is this the strategy they are resorting to? I will demolish them.

“You, the same President Mahama, when you met the labour unions, stated that state resources were criminally used. Why can’t I also drag you to the NIB for questioning? We were in this country when a party chairman urged supporters of his party to burn DRIP machines, yet the Director of Investigation did not say a word on that issue. I am to appear before the NIB on Wednesday, but if they like, I can go and sleep there on Tuesday night ahead of the meeting,” he said.

He added that “Nobody can threaten me or prevent me from asking relevant questions. Even Donald Trump was questioned after his company had a deal with Elon Musk’s company. When I appear before the NIB, I will use the word ‘hoarding’ in every paragraph. We can’t allow the government to keep that money.”
