NPP Must Be Reminded That Their Own Kwaku Kwarteng Called the Economy a Ponzi Scheme– Manasseh Fires

0

Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has reignited the debate over the mismanagement of Ghana’s economy under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, reminding them of the words of their own member, Kwaku Kwarteng.

In a strongly-worded Facebook post, Manasseh highlighted how, even before leaving office, top NPP officials acknowledged the disastrous state of the economy.

“Journalists should remind the NPP that Kwaku Kwarteng said in 2024 that the economy was being managed like a ‘Ponzi scheme,’” Manasseh wrote, referencing a statement made by the former Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee and a key member of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia economic team.

Kwarteng’s statement, made in 2024, was a shocking admission of financial recklessness under the NPP government. At the time, Ghana was struggling under ballooning debt, a collapsing currency, and an IMF bailout program, leading to widespread economic hardship.

His description of the country’s financial system as a Ponzi scheme—a fraudulent system where money from new investors is used to pay returns to earlier investors—suggested that the economy was being run unsustainably, with little long-term planning.

Manasseh’s post comes amid persistent NPP attacks on President John Dramani Mahama, who took office in January 2025. NPP supporters have accused Mahama of failing to quickly fix the economy, ignoring the magnitude of the economic disaster he inherited.

By bringing up Kwarteng’s comments, Manasseh is challenging the NPP’s credibility, reminding Ghanaians that even their own officials admitted to mismanaging the economy before they left power.

His post has sparked widespread reactions, with many agreeing that the NPP should take responsibility rather than shifting blame.

As Ghana continues to grapple with economic challenges, the debate over who is responsible and how to fix it remains at the center of national discourse.

Banks promise significant reduction in interest rates if BoG reviews CRR

0

Commercial banks have assured that they will move quickly to reduce interest rates if the Bank of Ghana (BoG) reviews the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) for banks in the country.

The banks have also promised to take measures to improve lending to businesses.

This is due to the fact that the regulatory measure has impacted on their liquidity and loan book.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of First Bank, Ghana Victor Yaw Asante disclosed this on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS EDITION on February 27, 2025 with host George Wiafe.

Background

The BoG in 2024 introduced a new CRR regime that links the CRR requirements to loans-to-deposit ratios (LDRs).

The action was part of efforts to mop up excess liquidity in the banking sector.

The new regime includes:

* 25% CRR for banks with LDRs below 40%

* 20% CRR for banks with LDRs between 40% and 55%

* 15% CRR for banks with LDRs above 55%

CRR and Lending

Speaking on the programme, Mr. Asante revealed that if the Bank of Ghana is able to heed to the request, it will go a long way to improve the operations of banks.

“We have made some passionate appeal to the Bank of Ghana and hopeful that could be addressed soon”, he added.

Cedi’s performance and Treasury bill auctions

The cedi has been fairly stable against the US dollar over the past months.

Mr. Asante called for measures that would improve the country export earnings to increase Ghana’s reserves.

He appealed to the BoG to use interventions and strategic measures to address the foreign exchange challenges without directly interfering in the market.

“We should also try and deal with expectations as well as manage things in a way that build trust”, Director noted

On recent limit in demand for dollars, Mr. Asante, revealed that the situation could be linked to improve supply of foreign exchange on the market.

On treasury bills auction and participation of commercial banks, Mr. Asante argued that the development should be seen as a demand and supply situation.

According to him, the reduction in treasury bills rate could also impact on cost of credit and lending rate if the trend is sustained.

Greater Accra Minister calls for stakeholder support in sanitation efforts

0

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has emphasized the need for collective action from stakeholders, including local assemblies, traditional leaders, religious organizations, and the private sector, to support the government’s periodic clean-up exercises.

According to her, sustained sanitation efforts will help maintain a cleaner environment and curb the spread of communicable diseases such as cholera.

Speaking to the media ahead of a scheduled clean-up exercise at the Madina Market, Madam Ocloo revealed that President John Dramani Mahama is set to launch a National Sanitation Day initiative in the coming days.

“We all know that sanitation has become a challenge in the capital, affecting not only our health but also our environment and overall well-being,” she said.

She explained that a Regional Sanitation Day will be observed every month to complement the national exercise, ensuring consistency in promoting environmental hygiene across the region.

“This initiative aims to instill a renewed sense of cleanliness and responsibility in our communities to prevent communicable diseases like cholera and also check flooding,” she added.

Madam Ocloo urged all stakeholders to actively participate in the initiative.

“This is a collective effort, and I therefore call on all assemblies, traditional leaders, religious organizations, market associations, youth groups, and the private sector to fully support and participate in this noble cause,” she stated.

The clean-up exercise at Madina Market is part of a broader effort to enhance sanitation practices and encourage community involvement in keeping the city clean.

Is Andre Ayew being forced to retire form Black Stars?

Black Stars skipper André Ayew Black Stars skipper André Ayew

The fate of Black Stars skipper André Ayew with the national team remains uncertain as he is set to miss yet another international assignment in March 2025, according to multiple reports.

The Le Havre forward has not featured for the Black Stars in over a year and has reportedly lost his captaincy and shirt number in the process.

His prolonged absence, coupled with a reported change in leadership within the team, has sparked speculation that he is being forced out of the national setup.

According to Joy Sports, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will soon announce a new captaincy structure, with André Ayew omitted from the list.

His younger brother, Jordan Ayew, is set to be named the new captain, while Alexander Djiku will take the first deputy role after Thomas Partey, who previously served as vice-captain, declined to retain the position.

Regarding Ayew’s iconic number 10 shirt, it has seemingly been handed to Mohammed Kudus, who wore it during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Reports suggest that the West Ham United star will continue wearing it for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In addition to losing his captaincy and shirt number, head coach Otto Addo has hinted that the former Olympique Marseille star is not in his plans.

“We are looking at the future and focusing on long-term development. That’s mainly why we invited younger players and left out André Ayew,” he explained after excluding the veteran in his latest squad selection.

Despite these developments, the 34-year-old has made it clear that he has no intention of retiring from international duty.

“I love what I’m doing, and I’m not ready to stop,” he told BBC in an interview.

André Ayew is currently in good form for Le Havre in the 2024/25 season, leading the club’s scoring charts with three goals.

Government to borrow GH¢6.493 billion in today’s auction

Interest rates on treasury bills have marginally reduced Interest rates on treasury bills have marginally reduced

The government intends to borrow GH¢6.493 billion in its auction on February 28, 2025.

The results from the auction on February 21, 2025, showed that GH¢20.499 billion in bids were tendered. Out of this, the government accepted GH¢9.634 billion, which was above its intended target of GH¢7.729 billion.

This means the government rejected GH¢10.865 billion in bids.

The 364-day bill received bids worth GH¢8.110 billion but accepted GH¢3.968 billion.

The 91-day bill received bids worth GH¢7.385 billion but accepted GH¢4.233 billion.

The 182-day bill received bids worth GH¢5.003 billion but accepted only GH¢1.432 billion.

Interest rates, on the other hand, have marginally declined in the last few weeks.

Currently, the rate for the 91-day bill stands at 24.47%, down from last week’s 26.85%, while the 182-day bill fell to 25.38% from 27.80% last week. The interest rate for the 364-day bill also declined from 29.07% to 27.29%.

Last week, the government sold GH¢9.434 billion out of the GH¢17.699 billion tendered.

The recent appetite for short-term instruments indicates strong investor confidence. The government’s rejection of excess bids signals either a cautious borrowing approach or an effort to avoid high interest rates.

Treasury bills remain the government’s primary source of borrowing until it regains access to the international capital market.

Atiwa East MP Reacts To Mahama’s 2025 SONA

0

Abena Osei Asare, MP For Atiwa East Constituency

Abena Osei-Asare
(MP, Atiwa East)
27th February 2025

President John Dramani Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) was expected to set the tone for his administration’s governance agenda. Instead, it was a predictable mix of economic doom-saying, political blame-shifting, and populist promises without a credible funding plan.

In addition to creating a gloomy picture of his inherited economy, the President has outlined heavy expansionary fiscal policies that, at best, may be considered populist and unsustainable. It is ironic that, on the one hand, the President describes the economy as being in an intensive care unit (ICU), yet, on the other hand, he is pushing for massive new social intervention programs without indicating how they will be financed.

1. ECONOMIC RECOVERY UNDER THE NPP: A BALANCED VIEW IS NECESSARY

The NPP has never shied away from acknowledging the economic challenges that Ghana faced. However, we took decisive and responsible actions to put the economy back on the path of recovery, culminating in the IMF giving the economy a clean bill of health.
The government’s attempt to paint an overly bleak picture of the economy ignores key facts:

1. The financial sector is in a much stronger position today than it was at the end of 2016.
Despite the President’s claims that the sector is still struggling, the truth is:

a. Depositors’ funds were protected during the financial sector clean-up, preventing the total collapse of the banking industry.

b. Total banking sector assets have seen significant growth. For instance, the banking sector’s total assets rose from GHS81.2 billion in December 2016 to GH₵367.2 billion in October 2024.

c. Private sector credit increased by 28.8% in October 2024, compared to negative 7.5% in 2023, showing strong financial recovery.

d. The core liquid assets to short-term liabilities and core liquid assets to total assets ratios have significantly improved, as the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data (January 2025) from the Bank of Ghana clearly shows.

It seems that the president, by his criticism, is setting the stage to start recklessly issuing licenses in the manner that led to the not-forgotten DKB saga.

2. On the so-called ‘scant reserves’ for debt servicing, the President failed to acknowledge the global economic squeeze that affected funding for African economies in recent times. Despite these challenges:

a. Gross International Reserves (GIR) improved from US$5.9 billion in December 2023 to US$7.7 billion in October 2024, representing 3.5 months of import cover.

b. The cedi remained stable, moving from GH₵12.4 per dollar in December 2023 to GH₵14.50 per dollar in December 2024—a controlled depreciation considering external pressures.

c. The NPP administration ensured that Ghana left resources in place for the new government to meet early 2025 debt service obligations, including the GHS6bn paid out to bondholders, last week, that the president was happy to announce to the house.

d. While the president emphasized the US$250m in the sinking fund at the end of 2016, he failed to acknowledge that there was a whopping US$1bn in external debt repayments alone for the NPP to pay in 2017.

3. Ghana’s economy was not ‘criminally handled,’ as the President implies. Like many economies worldwide, we faced challenges, but we took responsible measures to address them. The signs of economic recovery were evident before the change in government.

a. Real GDP growth averaged at 6.3% in 2024(Q1 – Q3) led by Industry with a growth of 10.4%

b. A positive primary balance of 0.4% (Nov. 2024) as against a negative primary balance -1.4% of GDP in 2016

c. Total revenue exceeded its target by 3.3%
while we acknowledge that we are not out of the woods yet, the narrative being pushed by the President is simply not accurate.

2. POPULIST EXPANSIONARY POLICIES: WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM?

For an economy supposedly in dire straits, one would have expected cautious, responsible economic planning. Instead, the President outlined a series of new social intervention programs, which raise serious concerns about fiscal sustainability.
Among these are:

1. The Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA)
2. The Feed Ghana Programme
3. The Poultry Farm-to-Table Project (nkoko nkitinkiti)
4. The Adwumawura Programme
5. The One Million Coders Programme
6. The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCare)

These are very expensive programs, and yet the President failed to tell Ghanaians how they will be funded. Given his own pessimistic economic assessment, the expectation would have been for the government to stabilize the economy first before announcing major spending initiatives.

Instead, what we are seeing is a return to the NDC’s traditional model of high public spending with no clear funding strategy—an approach that led Ghana into an IMF bailout in 2015.

A responsible government should focus on:

d. Sustaining and improving the growing confidence in the economy before committing to large-scale social programs.

e. Ensuring fiscal discipline and efficient resource allocation.

f. Strengthening the private sector to drive sustainable job creation, rather than relying on government-led employment schemes.

We ought to reject any economic model that prioritizes short-term political gains over long-term financial stability.

3. NATIONAL ECONOMIC DIALOGUE: A SERIOUS ENGAGEMENT OR A POLITICAL WINDOW DRESSING?

In keeping with its over-reliance on committees and dialogues in place of decisive action, the government has called for a National Economic Dialogue. It is, however, greatly doubtful that this was made genuinely and in good faith.

The president is seeking to procure a rubber stamp for his predetermined programs while avoiding responsibility.

More importantly, the President was elected based on a manifesto that ought to have been thoroughly thought through. Instead of resorting to endless committees, commissions, and dialogues, he should get down to implementing the policies he campaigned on. Governance is about leadership and execution, not deferring responsibility through unnecessary consultations.

4. CONCLUSION: GHANA NEEDS SERIOUS LEADERSHIP, NOT RHETORIC

This State of the Nation Address was more about looking backward than moving forward. It reflected a government that is more interested in justifying its return than in setting a clear and practical course for Ghana’s future.

Mr. President, Sankofa yenkyi, but a leader who spends too much time looking back will eventually stumble. Ghana needs a leader with vision, not one obsessed with revisiting the past.

We in the minority stand ready to engage constructively on policies that will help Ghana grow, but we will challenge any attempt to misrepresent economic realities and pursue rudderless fiscal policies that jeopardize our future.

Ghana does not need more rhetoric—it needs strong leadership, a vibrant private sector, and policies that empower individuals to thrive.

I will urge all of us to be responsible, and stand for the future of Ghana.

‘I’m a dentist – here’s how to whiten teeth and stop them from staining’

0

Maintaining a healthy mouth and a gleaming set of teeth is simpler than you might think. We all know we need to brush twice daily, keep up with dentist appointments, and use floss and mouthwash as required.

But what if you desire a smile so bright it dazzles everyone around you? With numerous products claiming to whiten smiles and countless online myths about home remedies, which solutions truly deliver results?

GQ had a conversation with cosmetic dentist Dr Joyce Kahng, who dispels dental myths and offers advice on oral health to her substantial social media following, totalling nearly 700,000 fans.

“There are so many products that are marketed to be ‘teeth whitening’ and most of them are probably actually not,” she stated. Dr Kahng pointed out that while many whitening toothpastes can clean the surface, they don’t address underlying issues.

It’s about more than superficial cleaning; true whitening transforms your teeth from the inside out. “We’re talking about removing those stains, breaking them up, and lifting them out of the teeth,” Dr Kahng said.

How do stains start?

Who doesn’t want a smile as white as this?

As for where stains come from, the California-based dentist warns against typical culprits like coffee, red wine, and smoking. “If it would stain my white coat, it can stain your teeth,” she cautioned.

“They all go in the category of depositing stains on the outside of your teeth,” she explained. Fortunately, these stains can be removed by brushing promptly.

However, if left for too long, the stain can penetrate the teeth, causing them to dull or yellow. The longer it remains, the more difficult it becomes to remove.

“It’s much easier for a teenager to achieve good results from basic over-the-counter strips than for an 80-year-old,” Dr Kahng pointed out.

The best ways to whiten your teeth

Professional whitening treatments

The most effective methods to brighten your teeth include professional whitening treatments carried out at a dentist’s office, where a gel containing approximately 6% hydrogen peroxide is used. In contrast, at-home whitening kits can only contain .1%.

Procedures typically last around 90 minutes, with dentists taking protective measures to ensure maximum effectiveness, such as blocking off saliva, which can neutralise the effects of hydrogen peroxide.

“It’s really about creating the optimal environment for whitening,” said Dr Kahng. “That’s why it’s the quickest way to whiten within a certain time frame.”

Close-up of young woman face with beautiful white teeth after dental treatment. Female with beautiful toothy smile.
Professional whitening treatments are the most effective, according to the dentist

At-home whitening strips and trays

At-home whitening strips and trays are also effective when used regularly, according to Dr Kahng. She advises patients to use strips daily for a week or two, taking a break if the teeth start to feel overly sensitive.

“It’s like going to the gym,” she said. “Doing a little bit every day is better than one intense session.”

Home remedies

While there are numerous suggestions for maintaining a pearly white smile using household items, Dr Kahng believes these methods are generally ineffective. Some advocate for the use of baking soda and activated charcoal, but according to her, these merely remove surface stains in the same way toothpaste does.

Coconut oil pulling, an ancient Indian practice of swishing oil in your mouth like mouthwash, is also touted by some as beneficial, but Dr Kahng remains unconvinced.

“Anecdotally, people say that helps, but scientifically, I don’t see it actually whitening the teeth from the inside out,” she said.

Similarly, over-the-counter hydrogen peroxide, which only has a strength of three per cent, won’t affect teeth and can potentially harm the gums, so it should be avoided.

Four expert tips to keep your teeth white

1. Don’t expect permanent results – New stains will start to appear almost immediately unless you completely eliminate everything that causes them. Dr Kahng stated: “Teeth whitening is actually one of those journeys where it requires maintenance throughout your lifetime if you want to maintain a certain colour.”

2. Find your rhythm – The frequency of using whitening products will depend on your personal circumstances. “For me, because I drink coffee and wine, I need to put in a whitening tray once a month,” shared Dr Kahng. “That’s enough to get me back to where I’m happy.”

3. Sensitivity is normal – It’s common to feel some sensitivity when you first start whitening your teeth. Dr Kahng suggests using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, containing either potassium nitrate or nanohydroxyapatite, before or after the whitening process.

4. Teeth whitening isn’t suitable for everyone – According to Dr Kahng, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid this treatment. Similarly, if you have active cavities, these should be addressed before considering whitening. And don’t expect any changes to veneers, crowns, or bridges – in fact, whitening could potentially damage their surface glaze.

‘Marriage is between a man and a woman’

0

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his unwavering support for the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, firmly asserting that only two genders—male and female—exist.

Speaking to the clergy in Accra on Friday, February 28, 2025, the President reaffirmed his commitment to what he described as the core principles of Ghanaian society.

“I believe in the principles and values that only two genders exist—man and woman. And that marriage is between a man and a woman,” Mahama declared, receiving nods of approval from religious leaders in attendance.

He further disclosed that consultations were ongoing with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the Proper Family Values Bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in the country.

“It is my hope that the consultation will lead to a renewed Proper Family Values Bill,” he stated.

The bill, which prohibits the promotion, advocacy, and funding of LGBTQ+ activities, was passed by the eighth Parliament but did not receive presidential assent under the previous administration of Nana Akufo-Addo.

Economic Recovery and National Development

Beyond addressing social and moral concerns, President Mahama also outlined his administration’s commitment to tackling Ghana’s economic challenges. He emphasized a clear plan to restore financial stability, create jobs, and ensure economic resilience.

“Our immediate priority is to stabilize the economy and restore confidence in Ghana. We will stabilize our currency, bring down interest rates, reduce inflation, cut the deficit, and improve our financial standing,” he assured.

Mahama also highlighted the importance of agriculture in achieving economic self-sufficiency, stating that his government was focused on strengthening the sector.

“A nation that cannot feed itself cannot prosper. That is why we are making aggressive interventions in the agricultural sector. By modernizing farming techniques, investing in agro-processing, and supporting our farmers, we will lay a solid foundation for a prosperous future,” he added.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has extended condolences to the family of the fourth-year Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who was recently murdered.

Speaking at the launch of ‘Heritage Month 2025’ at the Channel One premises in Accra on February 28, 2025, Dzifa Gomashie expressed concerns about the increase in reports of misbehaviour among the youth.

“I’ve been to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to be with the cadets who are commemorating the 28th February incident on their own. It was important for me to go there because, in recent times, our children, perhaps taking a cue from what is happening in our communities and Parliament, are misbehaving,” she stated.

She added, “And only yesterday, we received the sad news of a life being cut short because another child thought it was his place to do something that caused the death of this young lady in her final year.

“My heart goes out to her family, especially to her mother, and to all of us Ghanaians, that we learn to be more tolerant, more appreciative of each other, and what we bring together for the development of our country in that same spirit.”

Background

The KNUST student was found unresponsive behind the central laboratory on campus in the early hours of February 27, 2025.

She was pronounced dead by medical authorities from the KNUST Hospital, who examined the body at the scene before it was conveyed to the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

A subsequent police examination of the body revealed marks of violence.

Meanwhile, Daniel Tuffuor, the main suspect in the gruesome murder case, has been apprehended by the Regional Police for interrogation.

His arrest follows a thorough review of the university’s CCTV footage.

According to a statement issued by the university authorities, “The suspect, identified as a fellow student residing in the same hostel as the deceased, was found in possession of the clothing worn during the crime, which has been retrieved as evidence.”

Some Tomato Pastes Have Harmful Chemicals- KNUST Researchers

0

Researchers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have discovered the presence of Erythrosine, a banned substance, also known as Red Dye No. 3. in some tomato pastes sold in Ghana.

This artificial coloring is used in various foods like toffees, candies, and drinks, the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) however prohibits its use in tomato paste production as it has been linked to many potential health risks.

Tomato concentrate has become a staple in Ghanaian cuisine, offering a convenient alternative to fresh tomatoes.

However, concerns have been raised about the safety of these products. The KNUST study aimed to assess the quality of tomato concentrates sold in Ghana, and the findings are alarming.

The study analyzed eight different tomato paste brands and found that two samples contained Erythrosine, despite not being labelled as such.

Additionally, the researchers detected starch in the samples, which is also prohibited in tomato paste formulations in Ghana.

The research led by Dr. Abena Boakye of the Department of Food Science and Technology, of the university has urged the FDA to take action, not only by removing Erythrosine from tomato products but also by extending regulations to include other food products containing this harmful dye like confectioneries, candies and drinks.

They also recommend further research and policy changes to ensure the safety of food products available to consumers.

In light of these findings, consumers are advised to be cautious when purchasing tomato paste products.

The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has already banned Erythrosine from food products due to its potential health risks, and manufacturers have been given two years to remove it from shelves.

Mr Dagadu, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, praised President Mahama’s administration for the intention to implement policies that would help reduce inflation, stabilise the cedi, and promote economic growth productivity and public involvement.

“We need to commend the president for the plans to invest in infrastructure development, including roads, bridges, and energy sector and these investments will not only improve the business environment but also enhance the quality of life for Ghanaians,” he said.

Mr Dagadu, who is also a Governance Expert, specifically commended the president’s decision to fix the economic crises confronting the country and reset it on the path of growth and prosperity and noted that the move would improve the living standards of the public sector workers and boosted economic activity.

He explained that the president’s efforts to promote private sector development, particularly in the areas of agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism would potentially drive economic growth and create jobs for Ghanaians.

“I think this is the best State of the Nation Address we have witness for the past 16 years, the president presented the real state of the nation without trying to patch-up anything. And his upcoming policies outlined are full of hope for the future.”

Mr Dagadu commended the president for the move to establish TVET center of Excellence at all regional levels and implement of AgriNext programme, which would facilitate access to land bank for young farmers and create opportunity in agricultural value chain to promote greenhouse agriculture, among youth.

He said the call from the President Mahama for Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to roll out national apprenticeship programme to provide 10,000 jobs for the youth in the information technology with apprenticeship fees and start up kits should be embraced by all to alleviate unemployment plights.

Despite these developments, Mr Dagadu cautioned that there was still more work to be done to consolidate Ghana’s economic gains and urged the president’s administration to continue implementation of policies that promote economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.

Meanwhile, Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpe, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Keta, pledged to provide all necessary support for the constituents, including persons living with disability (PWDs) to benefit from government policies that would initiate.

He said, “In the areas of job creation, water, roads, sea defence and our mega 24-hour economy and the 10 billion dollars ‘Big push’ policy for rapid infrastructure development, we will make sure our people benefit squarely.”

He said as the country continues to navigate the economic challenges created by the previous Nana Addo led administration, it was clear that President Mahama’s government was committed to promoting economic growth and improving the lives of Ghanaians, and urged all to rally support for success policies.

Some residents in Keta, GNA engaged, expressed hope and courage that President Mahama administration would revamp the economy for the progress and development of the nation.

‘Leave Mahama alone, the economy was wickedly and criminally managed’

Award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni Award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni

Award-winning investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has taken to social media to defend President John Dramani Mahama following criticisms by proponents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

Manasseh asserted that statements made by President Mahama on the state of the economy he inherited from the NPP government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa are nothing but the truth.

“Leave Mahama alone. That the economy was wickedly and criminally managed is a fact,” he wrote in a post shared on X on Friday, February 28, 2025.

The journalist, in another post, stated that the NPP lost the 2024 Election because of their bad management of the economy.

He added that even a Member of Parliament of the NPP and a former Deputy Minister of Finance of the Akufo-Addo government admitted the economy was managed badly.

“You lost the debate on the economy when Dr. Bawumia sought refuge in digitalisation, instead of the economy he’s noted for.

“Journalists should remind the NPP that Kwaku Kwarteng, a deputy finance minister in Akufo-Addo’s first term, said in 2024 that the economy was being managed like a ‘ponzi scheme.’ President Mahama is charitable in describing the mess the NPP left behind,” he wrote.

‘It’s not the first time my space is disrespected’

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie

The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has vehemently condemned the negative stereotyping of actors following some statements made during the vetting of actor John Dumelo for the position of Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture.

During John Dumelo’s vetting, he was advised by the MP for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, to take his new role seriously, as he was no longer in the movie industry.

These comments have since sparked massive debate on social media, with scores of Ghanaians expressing disapproval of the dismissive attitude toward the creative industry.

Speaking on this development at the launch of ‘Heritage Month’ 2025 at the Channel One premises in Accra, the sector minister on February 28, 2025, expressed utmost disappointment.

She frowned at what she termed the disrespect shown toward the creative arts industry, emphasising that actors and other creatives undergo rigorous training and dedication to excel in their craft.

“It’s not the first time I’m hearing that my space is being disrespected. It’s a thing that we do often, and it happens even at the Citadel of Education. Why? You call us all dondologists, don’t you? This is dondology that you just saw.

“These people train, they rehearse, they learn, they go through a lot of training to be able to do their performances. Why don’t you start putting appreciation on it and value it?” she stated.

Dzifa Gomashie further called on Ghanaians to respect and value the creative industry, stating that it is an important part of the country’s heritage.

The minister’s comment joins that of various stakeholders in the creative arts sector who have expressed their outrage at the comment by Habib Iddrisu.

Watch firefighters ‘flee’ scene after angry residents attacked them over ‘late arrival’

Some angry residents at pelting stones at the fire tender Some angry residents at pelting stones at the fire tender

The arrival of firefighters at the scene of a fire often brings hope, as it signals the possibility of saving lives and properties from a ravaging fire.

Their presence is usually met with relief, as communities rely on their expertise to contain fires and to prevent further damage.

However, the situation was different when some personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at a fire scene to douse the inferno at the unidentified location.

As was captured on video, some frustrated residents, who were visibly angered by what they determined as a delayed response from the firefighters, decided to pelt stones at the fire tender.

The chaotic moment was captured in a video shared on Facebook on Friday, February 28, 2025, by the GNFS Public Relations Officer, Alex King Nartey.

Recounting the incident, he wrote, “This nonsense shall not prevail this year. If you attack us, we will go so that you will use that opportunity to kill the fire. After all, we didn’t set the fire. Use that energy to kill the fire.”

According to the GNFS, fire outbreaks continue to pose a significant threat to communities, businesses, and domestic settings in the country, which require stricter fire safety adherence by the citizenry.

Speaking at the recent launch of the National Fire Safety Week Campaign, in Accra, the Chief Fire Officer, Julius A. Kuunuor, indicated that in 2024 the Greater Accra recorded the highest number of fires with 1,309 cases while Ashanti Region recorded 1,145 and Eastern Region followed with 648 cases.

“In 2024 alone, we recorded 6,436 fire incidents, a 7.75 per cent increase from the 5,973 cases recorded in 2023, these fires were largely due to harsh harmattan conditions and non-compliance with fire safety protocols,” he recounted.

President Mahama outlines policy interventions to reverse $2 billion food import bill

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama says government will begin the implementation of well-considered policies geared towards reversing the high food import bill and food inflation in the country.

The policies, he said, would be guaranteed by the availability of a reliable power supply for the agriculture and fisheries sector to meet food needs while advancing exports to earn foreign exchange to strengthen the economy.

“Ghana has fertile lands, abundant water, and human resources. Yet, we face a paradox. Our food import bill continues to soar, reaching alarming levels of over US$2 billion annually.

“In addition, rising food inflation is burdening households and threatening livelihoods,” he said during his first State of the Nation Address on the floor of Parliament on Thursday.

Sharing highlights of the policies, he said the government would introduce the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA) to modernise agriculture, enhance agribusiness, ensure food security, lower food inflation, boost exports, and create sustainable jobs.

He also mentioned the Feed Ghana Programme, which would increase food production and reduce prices through projects like the Grains Development Project, focusing on rice, maize, and soybean production.

Other projects under the programme are the Vegetable Development Project, targeting crops such as tomatoes, onion, and pepper; the Poultry farm-to-table project to boost local production and eliminate poultry imports; and the “Nkukor nkitinkiti” project, which would cover 55,000 households producing eggs and fresh poultry for the market.

“Ghana imports 95 per cent of its poultry needs, which costs over US$300 million annually. To reverse this trend, government plans to revamp the poultry sector by investing in hatcheries, feed mills, processing, and distribution, working toward eliminating poultry imports,” President Mahama said.

He hinted of initiatives to strengthen the collaboration between agriculture and industry, prioritise value addition and the positioning of agriculture as a profitable and appealing activity for the youth.

To address the challenges associated with access to mechanisation, quality seeds, fertilisers, and extension services, the President said the government would establish Farmer Service Centres

in every agricultural district, ensuring farmers receive essential resources to improve productivity and efficiency

“We will implement an AgriNext Programme to facilitate access to land banks by young farmers, connect graduates with opportunities in the agricultural value chain, and promote greenhouse agriculture among the youth,” he said.

”This initiative will benefit approximately 30,000 young people.”

The Livestock Development Project would also be introduced to address over-reliance on imported meat by restocking breeder farms to increase local livestock production, create jobs and boost self-sufficiency.

Other strategic interventions to enhance productivity and sustainability in the fisheries sector include intensified surveillance and monitoring operations, bolstered by the deployment of modern technology; expanding the supply of subsidised premix fuel to support artisanal and industrial fishers; and promoting aquaculture development to increase local fish production.

“We will also invest further in modern fish landing sites and cold storage facilities to improve post-harvest handling, reduce losses, and enhance the quality of fish products,” President Mahama said.

“Our commitment to supporting women in fisheries remains steadfast as we implement programmes to empower female fish processors and traders with financial resources and capacity-building initiatives.”

Veteran football administrator Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer Veteran football administrator Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer

Veteran football administrator Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer has revealed that former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantaki represented him in his assassination plot case against Kurt Okraku.

Kurt reported Palmer to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), alleging that Palmer had plotted to assassinate him after being disqualified from the GFA presidential election in 2019.

Speaking with Hot FM, Palmer stated that he is not on good terms with Kurt and disclosed that former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi represented him in the case, which he eventually won.

“Our relationship is in bad taste because he accused me of wanting to kill him. He took the matter as high as the IGP. Kwesi Nyantakyi represented me as my lawyer,” Palmer said.

Recounting his first encounter with the police, the Tema Youth bankroller said he was shocked when he discovered that Kurt Okraku was behind the allegation.

“When his name was mentioned, they said, ‘Kurt Okraku has reported that you want to kill him.’ I was shocked. I demanded to see the text messages because I know how I write, but they were never shown to me.”

He reiterated that, given the circumstances, he cannot reconcile with Kurt and does not consider him a friend.

“If someone like that invites me for a peace talk or a roundtable discussion, I don’t think I should go. How can I have a relationship with such a person?”

In 2023, Kurt Okraku lodged a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service regarding an alleged assassination plot.

Reports suggested that an individual identified as David had been hired by Osei Palmer to murder Kurt Okraku.

The report further indicated that Kurt learned about the alleged plot after David confessed to him.

David was reportedly offered GH¢200,000 to carry out the assassination.

Amid gloomy economic outlook: We’ll build Ghana together – President assures nation

0

The hallowed halls of Parliament, witness to the ebb and flow of Ghana’s destiny, yesterday resonated with anticipation as President John Dramani Mahama delivered his maiden State of the Nation Address for his second and final term in office.

The air was alive with anticipation as the Majority side, clad in white, seemed to embody the very essence of hope; their attire a radiant expression of faith in the promise of tomorrow.

In stark contrast, the Minority side, adorned in sombre shades of black, appeared to  wear the mantle of dissent, their dark hues a poignant reminder of the lingering shadows of pessimism over the President’s promises to the nation.

As the clock struck 10:44 a.m., President Mahama stepped up to the lectern, a warm smile spreading across his face.

Clad in a colourful Dagomba-styled smock, he surveyed the room, his eyes locking onto the sea of expectant faces before him.

With Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang; the First Lady, Lordina Mahama; former President, J.A. Kufuor; former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings; Chairman of the Council of State, Edward Doe Adjaho; and Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the President found himself in a familiar company to deliver on the constitutional mandate in accordance with Article 67 of the Constitution on his return to the stage he once occupied between December 2012 and January 2017.

Although the scene in the chamber of Parliament was reminiscent of his first term appearances before the House, the circumstances were vastly different, with the weight of a struggling economy on his shoulders.

This included the projected GH¢280 billion in debt servicing hanging over the nation for the next four years, made up of GH¢150 billion for domestic debt and GH¢130 billion for external debt servicing.

Crossroads

President Mahama’s words wove a narrative of hope and resilience, tempered by the sobering realities of a nation at the crossroads, painting a vivid picture of the challenges facing the country and his vision for a brighter future.

“As we gather here today, we do so with a deep sense of responsibility, knowing that the decisions we make will shape the destiny of our great nation,” the President declared, his voice ringing out across the chamber.

President Mahama acknowledged that the state of the economy he inherited was worse than initially anticipated.

“The economy we inherited was in a state of distress, with rising debt, falling revenues, and a general sense of uncertainty,” he said.

For instance, he disclosed that despite the previous government’s expenditure of GH¢29.9 billion on the financial sector clean-up exercise, the sector remained in distress.

“The financial sector continues to struggle to date despite the reported spending of GH¢29.9 billion on the financial sector clean-up exercise,” President Mahama said.

Reset

The President, however, reassured the nation that his administration was committed to fixing the problems and putting the country back on track.

“We are determined to restore hope, to revive the economy, and to rebuild our nation,” he said.

“We will do this by investing in our people, by creating jobs and opportunities, and by promoting economic growth and development,” he added.

“It is not my style to lament and shift blame when confronted with challenges. I will fix the economic crisis confronting our country and reset it on the path of growth and prosperity,” he added.

The President outlined his vision for a 24-hour economy, aimed at boosting economic productivity and generating decent jobs for the people.

“We must move away from the old ways of doing things and embrace a new era of innovation and entrepreneurship,” he said.

“We will support our entrepreneurs, our small business owners and our farmers, to help them grow and thrive,” President Mahama pledged.

Economic growth

The President highlighted several key initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth, including investments in infrastructure, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, and measures to improve the business environment.

“We will build new roads, new bridges and new ports, to facilitate trade and commerce,” President Mahama announced.

“We will also invest in our energy sector to ensure that we have a reliable and sustainable supply of power,” he added.

Free SHS

On the issue of education, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining and improving the Free Senior High School policy.

“I, John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, will not cancel the Free Senior High School programme. We will continue to invest in our children, to give them the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century,” he said.

“We will also work to improve the quality of our education system by providing our teachers with the training and resources they need to excel,” President Mahama pledged.

Illegal mining, others

The President also pledged to address the scourge of illegal mining, which has devastated many communities across the country.

“We will take bold actions to stop the destruction of our environment and to ensure that mining is done in a responsible and sustainable way,” he said.

“We will work with our traditional leaders, our chiefs, and our community leaders, to ensure that our natural resources are used for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” President Mahama said.

In addition, President Mahama highlighted his administration’s efforts to improve health care, including investments in new medical facilities and equipment, as well as measures to address the shortage of healthcare professionals.

He said his administration would complete hospitals under the Agenda 111 project started by the previous administration, revealing that the predecessor government had no dedicated funding for the project.

“We will continue to invest in our healthcare system, to ensure that all Ghanaians have access to quality medical care,” he said.

The President also emphasised the importance of good governance, transparency and accountability, and pledged to continue his administration’s efforts to tackle corruption and promote integrity in public life.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure that our government is transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of our people,” President Mahama stated.

As President Mahama concluded his address, the chamber erupted into applause, with many lawmakers praising his vision and leadership.

“Together, we will build a brighter future for Ghana,” the President declared.

Set Realistic Budgetary Targets – IFS

0

Dr. Said Boakye

The Institute For Fiscal Studies (IFS) says the policy intentions of the government are less likely to be achieved if budgets delivered are not based on realistic projections of revenue.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the budget presentation by the government on March 11, 2025, Executive Director of IFS, Dr.  Said Boakye, stated that the Ministry of Finance could improve the revenue target that supports budget credibility by adopting a conservative approach to revenue projection.

“An essential feature of a credible budget is realistic revenue targets, since revenue is the cornerstone of any budget. The government of Ghana has a poor track record in this area. For instance, actual total revenue and grants was below the budget target every year from 2013 to 2023, with an average deviation of -7.4%,” he added.

He also asked the government to recognise that revenue projections are not about what the government wants to collect but what it can collect, given the economic outlook and the government’s policy efforts

He further urged the Ministry of Finance to review macro-fiscal forecasting framework and processes to address possible bias in the projection of revenue as well as improving estimation of the revenue impact of new tax policies by strengthening the underlying data and analyses.

Dr. Boakye further cited 2022, as an example of the year actual revenue from the e-levy turned out to be only 8.5% of the projected amount.

He advised the government not to return to the international bond market at the least opportunity but rather pursue steps to ensure lower fiscal deficits that ultimately results in low borrowing given the debt crises the country has suffered for decades.

He asked the government to ensure macroeconomic stability through strong fiscal consolidation and reduced monetary growth, boost economic growth to reduce unemployment through expenditure prioritisation and strategic intervention in agriculture.

Others are resetting Ghana’s external sector by changing the control structure of the country’s two major merchandize exports and fighting corruption with seriousness and effectiveness.

This initiative is part of the activities marking the 10th National Rastafari Conference, scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Centre for National Culture (Arts Centre) in Accra.

Established in 2009, the Rastafari Council, Ghana, is dedicated to promoting the teachings and legacy of Emperor Haile Selassie I and advocating for the upliftment of Rastafari in Ghana.

The council comprises various Rastafari mansions, including the Ethiopian World Federation (EWF), Twelve Tribes of Israel (TTI), Ruutz International, and Baifikrom Nyahbinghi House among others.

Through cultural events, educational programmes, and community outreach, the council seeks to uplift and unite the Rastafari community and all those who appreciate the values of peace, love, and unity.

This year’s conference is themed “Rastafari Education and Empowerment: Building Stronger Communities.”

The theme reflects the council’s commitment to fostering a stronger, more inclusive community that values health, education, and cultural heritage.

The keynote speaker for the conference is Prof. Imhotep Alagidede, President of the Nile Valley Metaversity and Group of Companies, following in the footsteps of esteemed speakers like Ras Dr. Wayne Rose, who addressed the 9th National Rastafari Conference on the topic of “Political Consciousness: A Key Requirement for National Development.”

The CEO of the Natural Way Herbal Clinic, Dr. Wiafe Akenteng, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We collaborated with the Rastafari Council, Ghana, because we share a deep commitment to enhancing the well-being of Ghanaians. As a healthcare provider, I am personally invested in ensuring that everyone has access to quality health services. This screening exercise is not just about identifying health issues; it’s about empowering individuals with the knowledge they need to live healthier lives.”

Royal Kofi Asante, Administrator of the Rastafari Council, Ghana, emphasised the organisation’s dedication to the health and well-being of its community. “At RCG, we believe that health is a fundamental right, and it’s our responsibility to give back to our community.

“This health screening exercise is a testament to our commitment to ensuring that Rastafarians and the broader community have access to essential healthcare services. We are proud to partner with the Natural Way Herbal Clinic in this endeavour.”

‘It’s disrespectful’ – Ashis tackles Habib Iddrisu over controversial movie industry comment

Nana Poku Ashis is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit Nana Poku Ashis is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit

Talent manager and entertainment pundit, Nana Poku Ashis, has added his voice to the ongoing debate surrounding the perception of Ghana’s creative arts industry, particularly in light of the comment by MP for Tolon Habib Iddrisu to John Dumelo.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie, Ashis debunked the misconception that actors and creatives are not serious or educated individuals.

Using John Dumelo as an example, he pointed to the actor’s intelligence and academic achievements as evidence that he is qualified for any political position.

“For anybody to become an actor and be sought after like John is sought after, it means you take your role seriously. You take time to read your scripts, understand them, and deliver prompts. That’s why movies call upon you,” Ashis explained.

He tagged the recent incident involving John Dumelo and Habib Iddrisu disrespectful, not just to Dumelo, but to all professionals in the creative arts and media space.

“It’s a disrespect to every other person in the media and creative arts business. To say, ‘Don’t go and do your acting things there.’ That means you don’t take me seriously,” he said.

He also called on established figures like John Dumelo to educate others about the value of the creative arts.

“John should have taken time to educate Habib Iddrisu. He had the opportunity to say, ‘What you are saying is very wrong. The fact that I am here doesn’t give you permission to speak to me that way,’” Ashis stated.

When asked about the way forward, Ashis criticised the way some industry practitioners portray themselves, which he believes contributes to the public’s dismissive attitude toward creatives.

“We have portrayed ourselves in such a way that most people see what we do as a joke. But there are very serious people, like some of us, who don’t take our work for granted.

“Our people need to take themselves seriously. They need to see themselves as elite,” he said.

He compared Ghanaian actors to international stars like Sylvester Stallone and Angelina Jolie, questioning why local creatives are not accorded the same respect.

He then urged creatives to elevate their self-worth and demanded that society recognize the intelligence, hard work, and professionalism required to succeed in the industry.

What Habib Iddrisu said about creatives that triggered uproar

During John Dumelo’s vetting on February 25, 2025, Habib Iddrisu advised the actor-turned-politician to take his new role seriously, stating, “When you go to the ministry, you are no longer in the movie industry.

Try to be as serious as you can to support your minister in succeeding.

This comment has since sparked massive backlash from creatives and industry stakeholders.

Mahama’s move to cut sod for NPP’s already progressing new Hajj Village laughable

Hassan Tampuli is a former Deputy Minister of Transport Hassan Tampuli is a former Deputy Minister of Transport

Former Deputy Minister of Transport and current Member of Parliament of Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has publicly mocked President John Dramani Mahama’s move to cut sod for the new Hajj Village, calling it an attempt to claim credit for a project already in progress as initiated by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

The MP also shared images of the construction site, showing visible progress on the project, further fueling skepticism over the necessity of Mahama’s sod-cutting ceremony.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Tampuli questioned the rationale behind the event, confirming that the project was initiated in 2024 by then Minister of Transport, Kweku Asiamah, in collaboration with the Ghana Airport Company and the Hajj Board.

“Did I hear President John Mahama is going to cut sod for a new Hajj Village in Accra tomorrow (Friday)? This project has been going on since last year, and it’s the initiative of the former Minister for Transport, Hon. Kweku Asiamah, with Ghana Airport Company Limited and the Hajj Board as the implementing bodies,” Tampuli wrote.

This comes in the wake of a poster that surfaced on social media announcing President Mahama’s plan to cut sod for the same project.

The project, a multi-purpose new Hajj Village, located behind the current Hajj Village and opposite Action Chapel on the Spintex Road, commenced in 2024 under the leadership of former Minister of Transport, Kweku Asiamah, with the Ghana Airport Company and the Hajj Board serving as the implementing bodies.

The announcement, shared by the newly-created Hajj Task Force on its official Facebook page, has left many questioning the motive behind the event.

The development has triggered a storm of reactions, particularly among social media users familiar with the progress of the Hajj Village project.

They believe this indicates the project is already well underway and does not require any fresh sod-cutting ceremony of any sort.

Below are pictures of the project showing its present state:

Sammi Awuku sets the record straight on economic performance under Akufo-Addo

Sammi Awuku, former NLA boss Sammi Awuku, former NLA boss

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has challenged claims by President John Mahama that the previous administration mismanaged Ghana’s economy.

According to him, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo managed the economy better than Mahama did during his previous administration.

He explained that inflation alone is not the sole macroeconomic indicator of economic performance.

On his Facebook wall on February 28, 2025, he wrote, “Was the economy criminally managed?” This has been the main question asked by the media since yesterday.

He stated, “My response has been an explanation that inflation is just one of the various macroeconomic indicators used to measure the performance of an economy. The fact that the general level of prices has gone up does not mean the economy was criminally managed.”

Sammi Awuku compared the performance of President Mahama to that of Akufo-Addo, stating, “In any case, Mahama inherited an economy with inflation at 9.4% from Mills. He pushed it up to 15.4% by December 2016. Akufo-Addo worked hard to tame inflation, bringing it down to 7.6% in September 2019, the lowest in 28 years! (Source: BoG)”

The former NLA boss noted that the Akufo-Addo administration faced significant challenges due to the global economic crisis triggered by COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.

“After the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation rose to 13.6% by January 2022. Soon after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the global price of crude oil surged from $72 to $121 per barrel. Freight charges increased by 300%. As a result, Germany experienced its highest inflation in 70 years, while the UK and US recorded their highest inflation in 40 years. This imported inflation significantly contributed to Ghana’s inflation rising to 54% by the end of 2022,” he said.

“However, the NPP government responded with policy measures to address the problem. Inflation hovered around 23% at the time Akufo-Addo handed over the economy to Mahama,” he added.

Sammi Awuku further emphasized that the Akufo-Addo administration recorded higher growth levels than Mahama in 2016.

“The ‘criminally managed’ economy still recorded over 6% growth, higher than Mahama’s 3.4% in 2016. Nana Addo’s average fiscal deficit was lower compared to Mills/Mahama’s. Nana Addo left an economy with a trade surplus, whereas John Mahama left an economy with a trade deficit in 2016. Nana Addo left almost $9 billion in gross international reserves to protect the cedi, while Mahama left only $6.1 billion,” he said.

The Ugandan police have launched an investigation into the case to ascertain the circumstances leading to the demise and take necessary steps.

“Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police said.

The police have retrieved some items belonging to the deceased player, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets, and a training kit.

At least 11 killed in blasts at M23 rally in eastern DR Congo, rebels say

Hospital workers carry an injured man at Bukavu Provincial Hospital in Bukavu after two explosions Hospital workers carry an injured man at Bukavu Provincial Hospital in Bukavu after two explosions

At least 11 people have been killed and 65 wounded when explosions rocked the city of Bukavu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during a rally for the M23 rebel group and their supporters, the leader of the rebel alliance says.

The DRC’s presidency, which says neighbouring Rwanda is backing the rebels, said in a post on X that “several” deaths occurred on Thursday and blamed “a foreign army illegally present on Congolese soil”.

Corneille Nangaa – who is the leader of the Congo River Alliance, which includes M23, and who had himself been present at the rally – said grenades were used in the explosions and were the same type used by Burundi’s army in the DRC. His claims could not be verified.

The first explosion caused panic, sending attendees fleeing from the area before a second explosion rang out, according to the AFP news agency. Residents said the explosions were accompanied by gunfire.

People ran through the streets, some bleeding and carrying limp bodies, video showed. Residents said they saw dead people.

The meeting was the first to be attended by Nangaa since his forces seized control of Bukavu, the region’s second largest city, nearly two weeks ago.

Nangaa told the Reuters news agency by phone that neither he nor other senior rebel commanders were wounded in the attack.

Bukavu is one of two key cities in the turbulent region seized in recent weeks by antigovernment M23 fighters, who United Nations experts said are backed by Rwanda.

The armed group has been trying to demonstrate that it can restore order in the territory it has captured from the DRC’s army and has reopened ports and schools.

M23 fighters have swept through the eastern DRC, seizing key cities and killing about 7,000 people. There have also been reports of sexual abuse of children and recruitment of minors as soldiers.

The rebel advance has stirred fears of a regional war that could draw in the DRC’s neighbours, including Rwanda.

The advance has been described as the gravest escalation in more than a decade of the long-running conflict in the eastern DRC, which is rooted in the spillover of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide into the DRC and the struggle for control of the DRC’s vast mineral resources.

Rwanda has said it is defending itself against the threat from a Hutu militia, which it said is fighting with the Congolese military.

Ghana loses US$290 million annually on sanitation

0

By Comfort Sena Fetrie-Akagbor

Tamale, Feb 28, GNA – Mr Yaw Attah Arhin, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Technical Specialist at World Vision Ghana, has disclosed that Ghana loses US$290 million every year due to poor sanitation, which affects the health sector.

He said an additional US$79 million is also lost due to open defecation, and 3,600 people died every year from diarrhoea alone.

Mr Arhin disclosed these in Tamale during the official launch of a Campaign for Improved Sanitation by Master Abdul Faraj Yazid Timtoni Wumbei, Child Sanitation Diplomat, on the topic: “The Basic Sanitation Situation in the Northern Region of Ghana – Reflections and Prospects”.

This child-focused national sanitation challenge is organised annually by World Vision Ghana and in collaboration with its partners, Kings Hall Media Limited, GAMA Sanitation and Water Project of the then Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Zoomlion Foundation, and Ghana Education Service to build capacity of children to co-create sustainable solutions to the sanitation challenges in the Northern Region.

The project is to influence children to cultivate keen interest in issues of environmental sanitation, become sanitation conscious and agents of change, and to sensitise and build capacity of children on issues of environmental sanitation.

It is also to empower children to co-create sustainable solutions to environmental sanitation challenges around them, and to advocate the removal of barriers and increased access to improved sanitation, particularly in basic schools.

Mr Arhin advised stakeholders to come on board to introduce innovative financing arrangements to ensure every household had a toilet facility.

He said stakeholders should invest in behaviour change communication strategies to reorient the mindset of citizens.

He said it was important to emphasize that water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and services were vital components of a conducive school environment, the absence of which compromised quality teaching and learning.

Mr Arhin said due to the challenges, World Vision Ghana and its partners found the lack of access to safe drinking water and toilet facilities in schools not only regrettable but also very worrying, especially when the few available toilet facilities did not have changing rooms for girls, which did not make the school

environment conducive or friendly to the girl child particularly, those who had to deal with menstrual hygiene management on a monthly basis.

He said, “As an organisation, whose vision for every child is life in all its fullness, we believe that nothing can be more important to child wellbeing than access to safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene.”

He appealed to government, development partners and members of the public to come out with techniques to ensure sustainable access to improved sanitation in Ghana.

Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, pledged his support to advocate strongly to make sanitation a top priority in the development agenda of the region.

Master Adbul Faraj Yazid Timtoni Wumbei is a 14-year-old Junior High School three student of Grace Holy Child Academy in Tamale, who emerged the overall winner of the 5th edition of the nationwide School Sanitation Solutions Challenge in 2024.

He was thus designated as Child Sanitation Diplomat to be supported to implement a one-year sanitation project in the country with a special focus on the Northern Region.

Master Wumbei pledged his commitment to support stakeholders to address poor sanitation in schools in the Northern Region.

MzGee and husband

Media personality Gloria Akpene Nyarku, popularly known as MzGee, has announced her divorce from Raymond Acquah in a surprising turn of events.

The couple, who tied the knot in a colourful ceremony in October 2017, while both working at Multimedia, had their wedding garner significant attention online.

However, despite their once-public union, MzGee revealed in a recent announcement that she and Raymond have been living separately for years. The former couple has officially been divorced for two years.

In a vlog post, she allegedly clarified her marital status, stating, “My name is Gloria Akpene Nyarku. I have no documentation that bears the name Acquah. I know this is because once upon a time you knew a certain Raymond Acquah who I was married to. Unfortunately, I have been separated from Raymond Acquah for three years and divorced officially from him for two years, so I don’t have any ties to him.”

Although the couple had remained silent on the matter for years, MzGee explained that the decision to speak out was necessary for the sake of her child.

“I wouldn’t have responded to or addressed it because it is nobody’s business what I did with my private life, but now there’s a child involved, and I do not want him growing up to be confused about his paternity,” she explained.

“I have no business whatsoever anymore with Raymond Acquah.”

MzGee also took the opportunity to request that Ghanaians refer to her appropriately moving forward. “I see that people want to attach us. Yes, maybe you didn’t know; it’s ok. My name is Gloria Akpene Nyarku. No Acquah attached. Please let the gentleman breathe,” she added.

Ken Agyapong shares story of his humble beginnings

0

Former Member of Parliament (MP) of Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong Former Member of Parliament (MP) of Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong

Former Member of Parliament (MP) of Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, who was also a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has opened up about his very humble beginnings.

Speaking at a recent event by Skill Force Ghana, dubbed ‘‘Entrepreneurial Mindset and Leadership for the Youth Symposium,” Ken Agyapong, who is one of Ghana’s richest men, indicated that a lot of people do not know that he is from a poor family.

He said that he was born into a very poor family from one of the most deprived communities in the country, Assin Dompim, in the Central Region.

The former legislator said that despite his humble background, he was determined to make it in life through education. He said that he took the common entrance examination and got himself an admission to Adisadel College.

He went on to narrate how he got the name ‘Kwame Agyapong from the Farms’.

“With my chop box and trunk, I went to Adisadel College. At that time, the road was bad, it was so dusty… So, when I got there, they could tell that this guy was from the farms. My hair, eyelashes, everything was brown.

“So, one senior looked at me and called me… I went to him and he asked me, ‘What is your name?’ I said, Kwame Agyapong; ‘Where are you from?’ I did not even say Assin Dompim, because as for Assin Dompim, it is worse, so I said Assin Foso. He said, ‘Where is Assin Foso? farms ooo, farms’,” he narrated.

He also recounted how his classmates, most of whom he indicated were from rich families, used to tease him in school with his new nickname.

The former flagbearer hopeful said that any time a teacher asked for his name, his classmates would respond for him saying, ‘Kwame Agyapong, Farms ooo, Farms.’

“They were teasing me in the classroom… I was at the back, so any master who came first introduced himself and asked each of the students to introduce himself as well. I was at the back there because I was tall. I have young boys, some are 12, 13, 14 and I was 16 (in my class). So, you can imagine, and they were from preparatory schools: Morning Star, Association, Radiant Way.

“So, the master would call ‘The gentleman back there, what is your name?’ And all the young ones would just turn and look at me and shout, ‘Kwame Agyapong, Farms ooo, Farms’,” he recalled.

The former MP narrated how he sat back in school while his colleagues went to schools like Holy Child and Wesley Girls to get girlfriends.

He said that the main reason he could not join them was because he did not have nice clothing and was not that fluent in the English language.

“That time I’ll be washing seniors’ clothes. I didn’t have a chance. And again, you need a spotless white shirt to go to Holy Child or Wesley Girls to talk to a girl. I was from a poor family, how was I going to get that? So, I didn’t even bother.

“And even the English, when you meet the woman, you have to think of what you are going to say. You construct it in your head before you voice it out, so I wouldn’t bother at all. But we continued struggling, struggling, and here we are today,” he said.

Ken Agyapong said that today, because of his determination, he has become a man who is contributing so much to society.

He added that he was sharing his story with the youth so that they would not lose hope no matter where they are from.

“I can tell you that poor boy from Assin Dompim can proudly say that this time, there is nothing that will go on in Adisadel College that I will not be involved. God has done his part. I have also done my part,” he said.

Eni welcomes Ghana’s withdrawal of Sankofa unitisation directives

Business News

Italian energy giant Eni has welcomed the Ghanaian government’s decision to withdraw the Unitisation Directives related to the Sankofa Cenomanian oil field.

The directives, issued in 2020, had been a source of controversy, with Eni and its partners raising concerns over their potential impact on operations.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition’s decision to withdraw the directives is seen as a positive move by both Eni and its partner, Vitol.

Eni, which has been operating in Ghana since 2009, reaffirmed its commitment to exploring new opportunities in both traditional and transition energy sectors.

“Eni remains committed to leverage its portfolio of innovative projects, seizing new opportunities both in traditional and transition energy sectors, while strengthening domestic energy security and sustainability,” the company said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Eni’s operations in Ghana are centred on the Sankofa field, located offshore in the Tano Basin. The field is projected to produce oil and gas until 2040, with Eni serving as the operator.

The company has also expressed interest in expanding its presence in Ghana, including potential investments in renewable energy projects.

Meanwhile, Springfield E&P—which had been involved in the unitisation discussions—is yet to respond to the government’s decision.

No press conference revisionism will change your poor performance – Bridget Otoo slams NPP MPs

0

Media personality, Bridget Otoo Media personality, Bridget Otoo

Media personality, Bridget Otoo, has criticised the minority caucus in Parliament after they organised a press conference disputing some statements made by President John Dramani Mahama during his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA).

In an X post on February 27, 2025, Bridget Otoo stated that the minority’s ‘staged’ press conference was solely intended to deceive Ghanaians and reminded them that it would not change the fact that they performed poorly while in power.

She emphasised that the 184 NDC seats in parliament are a testament to the poor performance of the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

“I listened to the micro minority rumble on about handing over a ‘restored’ economy to the NDC. The true state of the economy is in the 184 seats the Majority has; the real state of affairs is in the 38% they had in the election.
