Popular Ghanaian media personality and activist, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has stated that their planned three-day demonstration, scheduled for April 28–30, 2025, and dubbed #GalamseyMustFall, #SaveOurGhana, and #GhanaDeservesBetter, can only be restricted or cancelled by a court of law.

Leading representatives from the Generational Rights Protection Society on Thursday, April 17, 2025, to officially notify the Ghana Police Service of the upcoming demonstration, Afrifa-Mensah explained that there was a standoff with the police over the proposed protest route—particularly the final destination at the Presidency.

He stated that the police disagreed with their chosen route and advised them to seek legal redress if they believed the demonstration should be limited or could not proceed as planned.

“Disagreements arose concerning the demonstration’s final destination; however, according to the Public Order Act, only a court of law—not the police—can make that determination,” he said.

“The only place where such issues can be resolved is in court. So, we made our intentions clear: if they think we cannot hold the demonstration or use the route we’ve chosen, then they should go to court. Whatever the court decides, we will respect it,” he told journalists on Friday, April 18, 2025.

The planned protest seeks to challenge the Mahama-led government’s alleged failure to combat the illegal mining menace, popularly known as galamsey.

Under the rallying cry “Ghana’s Future Is Worth Fighting For,” Afrifa-Mensah has called on citizens from all walks of life to rise and speak out against what he described as a national crisis threatening the country’s environment, natural resources, and future prosperity.

The protest is gaining momentum on social media, with hashtags such as #GalamseyMustFall, #SaveOurGhana, and #GhanaDeservesBetter.

The movement aims to put pressure on the government to take decisive action against illegal mining operations that continue to destroy water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves across the country.

“Our water, our air, our land, our future! Let’s come together to protect Ghana’s environment from the devastating effects of galamsey,” Afrifa urged in a public message.

Vladimir Putin’s mouthpiece has chillingly threatened Sir Keir Starmer and his “coalition of the willing” with nuclear war.

Vladimir Solovyov, a notorious echo of Putin’s views and a fervent commentator on Russia’s War on Ukraine, issued the grave threat as a counter to Western media stories and support coming from European nations to Ukraine.

On his television show ‘Sunday Evening With Vladimir Solovyov’, the Kremlin’s spokesperson stated that the UK and coalition of the willing “are directly waging war against us”.

Directly addressing the Western leaders, he ominously warned that they would “feel their consequences” just like soldiers in combat.

He proclaimed: “You don’t understand the main thing. We see right through your coalition of peacemakers, who are not peacemakers but basically interventionists, will be destroyed.

“You have to realise that not only the frontline units you’re planning to deploy on the territory of Ukraine will be destroyed, but since we can’t perceive it in any other way other than the direct participation of your countries, you will feel the consequences, the likes of which you have never seen.”

His menacing message to Britain, France, Germany, and the Baltic states was clear: “All of your howling will not help you.”

He concluded with a sombre warning: “Your fate will be sad.”

Fellow broadcaster Margarita Simonyan took swipes at the West, citing a recent article in The Times as proof of wavering commitment: “The article basically says, ‘Should we keep going? If we go on that means we have to send our troops. Is the British public ready for this? Because our people may perish.'”

She bluntly added her chilling take: “It’s not that they may perish. They will certainly perish. We will kill them all.”

As Russia continues its assault, Ukrainian cities and civilian structures bear the brunt. A deadly missile attack struck Sumy on Sunday, causing 35 fatalities and injuring 117 people.

President Trump weighed in on the “terrible” event, branding it an accident by Russian forces but stopped short of elaborating, even though Russia said it was not an accident.

Dr Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister for Education

Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak has revealed that first-year university students will no longer receive direct refunds under the government’s no-fee stress policy.

He explained that the funds would be credited toward their second-year tuition fees.

The Builsa South MP noted that the move is aimed at preventing logistical challenges and any potential impropriety.

During his vetting, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced that students who had already paid for the 2025 academic year would receive refunds.

However, Dr Apaak has revealed that after an assessment, it was decided that the money should no longer be given to the students directly, but rather used to pay their second-year fees.

He told Joy News that “Rather than the physical reimbursement, going forward, as they go into their second year, what should have come to them to defer their academic fee for the first year will become a credit, which will then mean that as they go to the second year, they won’t have to pay because they have already paid for their first year.”

He added, “This approach helps us avoid logistical challenges and any potential impropriety.”

The government in the 2025 budget statement allocated GH¢499.8 million for the No-Academic-Fee policy for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions under the ‘No-Fees-Stress’ initiative.

This was announced by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, during his presentation of the 2025 Budget in Accra on Tuesday, March 11.

“Mr Speaker, an amount of GH¢499.8 million has been allocated for the No-Academic-Fee policy for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions under the ‘No-Fees-Stress’ initiative,” Dr Forson said.

The “No-Fees-Stress” is an initiative promised by President John Dramani Mahama with the objective of easing the financial burden on parents and guardians in Ghana, particularly in relation to the payment of school fees.

Taking to his Facebook page, Oliver Barker-Vormawor wrote “If the Chief Justice’s daughter can travel on state funds and receive 10,000 dollars as per diem.

His comments are in reaction to the petitions calling for the removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

President John Mahama has begun consultations with the Council of State following the submission of three petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

A statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, confirmed that the President had forwarded the petitions to the Council of State in line with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the process for removing a Chief Justice.

Although details of the petitions remain undisclosed, this development marks the beginning of a formal constitutional process that could potentially lead to significant changes within Ghana’s judiciary.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that serious conversations are underway regarding the possible relocation of the Kumasi Central Prisons, a move aimed at addressing long-standing congestion issues and improving living conditions for both inmates and officers.

“Thankfully, before today, the Interior minister was here. We held an extensive discussion on some of the challenges faced by inmates and prison officers here at the Kumasi Central Prisons and also as a region,” Dr Amoakohene shared, speaking to journalists after a recent inspection.

He further revealed that decongesting the prison was central to the discussions: “We discussed, among others, plans to be able to decongest the prison, which is key in making sure that you provide a very conducive environment for your work.”

As part of the efforts to achieve that goal, the regional minister hinted at a more transformative solution — the relocation of the entire facility.

“Additional things that have come up are a possible relocation of the central prisons so that we can have adequate land space and be able to, as it were, free the city and be able to, as it were, decongest the central prisons.”

The talks, he said, are still at the consultation stage but are receiving attention at the highest levels of leadership.

“These discussions are ongoing, and President Mahama definitely would have a say on that, and we’ll be sure what we want to do so far as the central prisons are concerned.”

Since his swearing-in on January 7, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama has wasted no time in rolling out policies aligned with his campaign promises. National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has shared an interest story of how he dealt with fake news about him owning a fuel station in Sunyani in the Bono Region.

According to experienced politician, soon after President Kufour exited office, rumours went viral that he owned a chain of fuel stations across the country and about 200 fuel tankers, an allegation that came to him as a surprise.

He said the now opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) made a lot of noise about that allegation so well that many Ghanaians including some NDC party members believed in that lie.

Asiedu Nketia in an interview with Class FM, narrated that he became aware of the rumour only after a party member who was working at a fuel station got sacked by his employer and a call was made to him [Asiedu Nketia] to employ the dismissed employee in his supposed fuel station.

….So that senior person called saying, General, this is a problem we have to solve. This our serial caller he has just been sacked, so we are begging you, can take him at your filling station? Then I saked, which filling station? then she responded: ‘this one near Ohene Gyan’s house.’ “Then I said who owns it, I have no idea.” Then she responded: As for Sunyani everyone knows, so, even me, you want to hide it from me.”

According to the political strategist, following this encounter, he did his own checks and realised that indeed somebody was using his name to run the fuel station.

He added that, he then decided to map out a strategy to deal with the rumour once and for all.

Asiedu Nketiah explained further how he went about it.

“We did our manifesto launch in Sunyani in 2015. So the party people came from all over the country to participate. So, I told the group that came from Tamale with their buses. I told Azorka, go to this particular fuel station. Go and fuel all the buses and tell them that the owner had asked you to come and fuel. So they went and did that. When the people at the filling station demanded asked money, Azorka told them that General Mosquito is the one who asked us to come and fuel the buses. You cannot destroy my name and not have any consequences.”

Asked by the host, why he deliberately let the fuel company incur debt, and how the money was paid, Asiedu Nketiah responded:

“They said they were not paing, the filling station belongs to General Mosquito and he asked them to come and fuel the buses. The owner knew it did not belong to me and he was making all those noises. They even manhandled the attendants and drove off. So, that owner eventually had to emerge and address the press that, that filling station doesn’t belong to Asiedu Nketiah.”

National Organiser of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Yaw Asani Tano, has alleged that some powerful and influential individuals are frantically pushing to have the criminal charges against the embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, dropped.

Boahene was arrested at the airport upon his arrival in the country in March 2025 for allegedly embezzling state funds amounting to over GHC 30 million during his tenure as head of the NSB from 2017 to 2025.

His wife, Angela Boateng, was also arrested by detectives when she went to visit him, and both have since been formally charged.

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has revealed that the couple acquired numerous high-end properties in Ghana and abroad using funds from questionable sources.

The investigation has uncovered a trail of luxurious properties, including:

No. 2 Stream Part Drive, Mayfair Estates, LA, Accra: A staggering $1,000,000 deposit was made for this estate, with relevant deposit slips and receipts traced.

No. 6 Edith Avenue, Mayfair Estates, LA, Accra: A deposit of $500,000 was recorded.

No. 7 Edith Avenue, Mayfair Estates, LA: $200,000 was deposited.

No. 8 Edith Avenue, Mayfair Estates, LA: An initial deposit of $97,815 was made, with authorities suspecting additional cash payments.

No. 9 Edith Avenue, Mayfair Estates, LA, Accra: A deposit of $270,000 was recorded.

No. 10 Edith Avenue, Mayfair Estates, LA, Accra: The deposit amount for this property stands at $150,000.

Speaking on a panel discussion during UTV’s Breakfast Show, the outspoken politician Yaw Asani Tano alleged that some powerful chiefs and pastors are doing everything possible to get Adu Boahene and other officials implicated in the National Service Secretariat (NSS) scandal released.

Asani Tano warned that Ghanaians would not allow allegedly corrupt former public officials to escape prosecution for their alleged crimes.”

“There are allegations that some powerful chiefs are trying to intervene in Kwabena Adu Boahene’s case. This is a test case for this government. We have heard and seen the presentation by the Attorney General on this matter. We will not allow any situation that enables these people—NSB and NSS officials—to go scot-free.

I also have intel related to National Security. I’m informed that certain individuals are trying to manipulate and suppress it.

In Adu Boahene’s case, powerful men of God and chiefs have been making frantic calls to have the case dropped. Meanwhile, people struggle to receive healthcare in our hospitals due to lack of equipment and resources. We must not allow corrupt officials to get away with their crimes. Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has strongly criticised the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for its silence on an incident in which a microphone belonging to TV3 was pushed to the floor by the 3rd Vice Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) during a recent public event.

The outspoken politician, during a press conference held by the Minority in Parliament on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, was captured on camera pushing the TV3 microphone to the ground—an action that appeared to surprise both the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, and the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who were seated beside him.

Alhaji Osman Masawudu, who has since spoken on the matter, stated that his action was deliberate and meant to signal the party’s disinterest in engaging with the media house.

The largest opposition party, in January 2025, announced its withdrawal from all Media General platforms—including TV3, 3 FM, and Onua FM—citing months of failed attempts to address what it described as biased and unprofessional conduct by the network’s hosts and management.

The conduct of the NPP Vice Chairman has been widely condemned by the public, with many describing his behavior as inappropriate and unprofessional.

Commenting on the issue during a panel discussion on TV3, Nana Yaa Jantuah expressed surprise at the GJA’s continued silence on the matter, several days after the incident.

“Why is the GJA quiet? We are all journalists, and there should be solidarity. When we were growing up as young journalists, we stood up for one another. So what is the GJA doing? The NPP almost collapsed this programme, they boycotted it, and you people went to do some community what-what, and it didn’t work. They are after you, and you people are quiet. The GJA should come and speak out.”

Nana Yaa Jantuah further stated that the NPP suffered a heavy defeat during the 2024 general election because they allowed arrogance to take over and ignored wise counsel from Ghanaians.

“The way these people behave—even on set—is the arrogance of power. They forgot that they were voted for, that Ghanaians put them where they were. Ghanaians were so angry—just look at how they voted against them.”
