IMF cuts 2025 global growth forecast to 2.8% from 3.3%

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sharply downgraded its global growth forecast, projecting the world economy to expand by just 2.8% in 2025, a significant drop from the 3.3% forecast made in January.

This update is contained in the published IMF’s April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO), which cites escalating trade tensions with the United States announcing a wave of new tariffs with trading partners responding with their own countermeasures, creating ripple effects across global supply chains and investor sentiment.

It also cites mounting policy uncertainty as the main culprits behind the slowdown.

“Since the release of the January 2025 WEO Update, a series of new tariff measures by the United States and countermeasures by its trading partners have been announced and implemented, ending up in near-universal US tariffs on April 2 and bringing effective tariff rates to levels not seen in a century.

“This on its own is a major negative shock to growth. The unpredictability with which these measures have been unfolding also has a negative impact on economic activity and the outlook and, at the same time, makes it more difficult than usual to make assumptions that would constitute a basis for an internally consistent and timely set of projections.

“Given the complexity and fluidity of the current moment, this report presents a “reference forecast” based on information available as of April 4, 2025 (including the April 2 tariffs and initial responses), in lieu of the usual baseline. This is complemented with a range of global growth forecasts, primarily under different trade policy assumptions.

“The swift escalation of trade tensions and extremely high levels of policy uncertainty are expected to have a significant impact on global economic activity. Under the reference forecast that incorporates information as of April 4, global growth is projected to drop to 2.8 percent in 2025 and 3 percent in 2026—down from 3.3 percent for both years in the January 2025 WEO Update, corresponding to a cumulative downgrade of 0.8 percentage point, and much below the historical (2000–19) average of 3.7 percent,” part of the report read.

In advanced economies, growth is now expected to slow to 1.4% in 2025, with the U.S. economy seeing a notable downgrade—now projected at 1.8%, nearly a full percentage point below previous estimates.
In emerging market and developing economies, growth is expected to slow down to 3.7 percent in 2025 and 3.9 percent in 2026, with significant downgrades for countries affected most by recent trade measures, such as China. Global headline inflation is expected to decline at a pace that is slightly slower than what was expected in January, reaching 4.3 percent in 2025 and 3.6 percent in 2026, with notable upward revisions for advanced economies and slight downward revisions for emerging market and developing economies in 2025.

The IMF flagged intensifying downside risks, warning that a deeper trade war, rising financial instability, and fragile policy buffers could worsen the economic landscape. Vulnerable emerging markets could face capital flight, currency pressures, and increasing debt burdens.

The Fund also noted that a reversal or de-escalation of current trade policies could offer a reprieve and potentially revive global growth.

“Intensifying downside risks dominate the outlook. Ratcheting up a trade war, along with even more elevated trade policy uncertainty, could further reduce near- and long-term growth, while eroded policy buffers weaken resilience to future shocks. Divergent and rapidly shifting policy stances or deteriorating sentiment could trigger additional repricing of assets beyond what took place after the announcement of sweeping US tariffs on April 2 and sharp adjustments in foreign exchange rates and capital flows, especially for economies already facing debt distress.

“Broader financial instability may ensue, including damage to the international monetary system. Demographic shifts and a shrinking foreign labor force may curb potential growth and threaten fiscal sustainability. The lingering effects of the recent cost-of-living crisis, coupled with depleted policy space and dim medium-term growth prospects, could reignite social unrest. The resilience shown by many large emerging market economies may be tested as servicing high debt levels becomes more challenging in unfavorable global financial conditions.

“More limited international development assistance may increase the pressure on low-income countries, pushing them deeper into debt or necessitating significant fiscal adjustments, with immediate consequences for growth and living standards. On the upside, a deescalation from current tariff rates and new agreements providing clarity and stability in trade policies could lift global growth,” it added.
The report calls for coordinated policy action, urging nations to work together to restore predictability in trade, strengthen debt sustainability, and address long-term structural challenges like demographic shifts and migration.

Mahama suspends Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

0

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo following the establishment of a prima facie case in response to three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.

The decision, in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and taken in consultation with the Council of State, was announced on Tuesday, April 22. It marks a significant moment in Ghana’s judicial history, as the country’s top judge now faces a formal inquiry into her conduct.

While the specific allegations contained in the petitions have not been publicly disclosed, they have stirred widespread debate within legal and political circles, raising questions about judicial accountability and the integrity of the judiciary’s leadership.

In accordance with constitutional procedures, Chief Justice Torkornoo was furnished with copies of the petitions and given 10 days to respond. She submitted her written response on April 7.

Following a review of the response and further consultations, the President determined that a prima facie case had been established. Consequently, a five-member committee has been set up under Article 146(6) to investigate the matter.

The committee is composed as follows:

  1. Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court – Chairman

  2. Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court – Member

  3. Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Former Auditor-General – Member

  4. Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, Ghana Armed Forces – Member

  5. Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor, University of Ghana – Member

Per Article 146(10) of the Constitution and upon the advice of the Council of State, the President has issued a warrant for the immediate suspension of the Chief Justice pending the outcome of the committee’s investigations.

The coming weeks are expected to shape a defining chapter in Ghana’s constitutional and judicial landscape, as the committee begins its inquiry into the petitions.

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that the accountability period for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is near.

According to Gyamfi, the government’s revocation of Chairman Wontumi’s Akonta Mining licence is a testament to President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to tackling illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.”

“The day of reckoning for Chairman Wontumi and his ilk has come. @JDMahama means business. Together with well-meaning Ghanaians, we shall win the fight against illegal mining and preserve our environment,” he stated in a social media post on April 22, 2025.

His comments follow the government’s directive, through the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Armah-Kofi Buah, instructing the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining lease of Akonta Mining, a company owned by Chairman Wontumi, over alleged breaches.

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has asked the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining licence of Akonta Mining Ltd over illegal operations.

According to him, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.

Akonta Mining Ltd is owned by NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

“Some interviews with a few residents indicate that the modus operandi of Akonta Mining is to use force to enter and destroy even the farmlands and produce of poor farmers in the area.

“Armed with this intel, on the eve of Good Friday (April 17 2025), an intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the raid of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining,” the minister said during a press briefing on April 21, 2025.

According to the minister, the operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 AM and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:

* 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women)

* Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base

* 2 Pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each, one single-barrel gun retrieved

* Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, four motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment.

He added that all suspects have been transported to Accra and are in the custody of the Ghana Police Service, pending prosecution.

A journey of triumphs and challenges in West African integration

0

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marks its 50th anniversary in 2025, and its journey has been marked by significant highs and lows in regional integration, political collaboration, and economic development.

It was founded in 1975 to promote economic cooperation and development among West African countries.

Over the years, it has strived to foster peace, stability in a region that has been historically marred by political instability and under development.

West African countries, striving for stability and prosperity in a region historically burdened by colonial legacies, political instability, and underdevelopment.

As Ghana hosts the launch of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, GhanaWeb takes a look at the successes and challenges ECOWAS has faced since its inception.

Successes

Promotion of regional integration:

ECOWAS has made notable strides in facilitating the free movement of people, goods and services within its member states.

The ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) has helped to promote intra-regional trade and reduce dependency on external markets.

Peacekeeping and Stability

ECOWAS has been instrumental in maintaining peace in West Africa, particularly through the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), which played a critical role in mediating conflicts and managing crisis in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau in the nineties.

Economic integration

ECOWAS has created large markets that attract foreign investments and encourages specialisation along lines of comparative advantages.

It has also promoted cultural exchange among member states, enhancing regional cooperation.

It has facilitated the use of local inputs in industries and reduced foreign ownership of enterprises and also made significant investments in the continent’s energy supply, food security and human capital development.

Here are some challenges ECOWAS has faced in its journey:

Internal divisions

Despite its successes in peacekeeping, ECOWAS has sometimes struggled with internal political divisions and its ability to respond quickly and effectively to regional crises.

The failure to prevent coups in member states like Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso in recent years has questioned its ability to enforce democratic governance.

Economic integration challenges

The goal of economic integration has faced significant hurdles, including differences in economic policies, a lack of infrastructure, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.

The dream of a common currency, the Eco, has been delayed multiple times, with regional powers like Nigeria and Ghana unable to agree on key economic terms and conditions.

Limited impact on human rights and governance issues among member states

While ECOWAS has made some efforts to promote democracy and good governance, its influence appears limited, sparking conversations that it has not done enough to hold leaders accountable for human rights violations or for subverting democratic processes.

As it marks its 50th year, it is expected that it will do more to create a prosperous continent, tackle climate change, violent threats and regional disintegration.

Jonah Kusi-Asare is a player of Bayern Munich Jonah Kusi-Asare is a player of Bayern Munich

At just 17 years old, Jonah Kusi-Asare is already making waves at Bayern Munich with his eye-catching performances and immense potential.

The towering forward is regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents and is eligible to represent Ghana internationally.

Having earned a spot in Bayern Munich’s first-team setup, Kusi-Asare’s name has started to gain recognition, an incredible achievement for someone still in his teens.

But who is this teenage sensation being tipped as one of Europe’s next big strikers, and why has he suddenly become a topic of discussion among German football fans?

This article sheds light on Jonah Kusi-Asare’s journey, tracing his path from Sweden’s youth ranks to Bayern Munich’s elite setup.

Born on July 4, 2007, in Solna, Sweden, Kusi-Asare is the son of former Swedish-Ghanaian footballer Jones Kusi-Asare, while his mother hails from Finland.

As a result, he is eligible to represent Sweden, Ghana, and Finland at the international level.

He began his football journey in the youth setup of IF Brommapojkarna before moving to AIK in January 2023.

Just months later, on August 28, he made history as the youngest player ever to feature for AIK in Sweden’s top flight, debuting at just 16 years, 1 month, and 24 days old.

He went on to make four league appearances that season, showcasing glimpses of the talent that attracted international attention.

On February 1, 2024, Kusi-Asare took a major step in his career by signing with German giants Bayern Munich for a reported fee of €4.5 million.

Initially joining the club’s under-19 squad, he was quickly promoted to Bayern Munich II ahead of the 2024–25 season.

He made his debut for the reserve side on August 30, 2024, featuring in a 1–1 draw against DJK Vilzing in the Regionalliga Bayern.

His steady rise continued with a first-team call-up for a Bundesliga match against Mainz 05 on December 14, 2024.

Just a few weeks later, he experienced his first taste of senior action in a friendly against Red Bull Salzburg on January 6, 2025, coming off the bench to replace Michael Olise in a commanding 6–0 victory.

Kusi-Asare’s potential has drawn praise from Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, who expressed his excitement about having him in the squad.

“Jonah Kusi-Asare is a young striker with enormous potential. He has all the attributes: he’s technically strong, fast, tall, very robust for his age, and an excellent finisher. We’re very pleased that he’ll be playing for FC Bayern in the future,” he said.

Although Kusi-Asare has yet to make an appearance for Sweden’s senior national team, he has represented the country at youth level, playing for the U16 and U17 teams. This means he remains eligible to represent the Black Stars.

UN food agency cites funding gap as it halts aid to 650,000 in Ethiopia

0

Millions need urgent treatment for malnutrition Millions need urgent treatment for malnutrition

The World Food Programme (WFP) said it is suspending aid for 650,000 malnourished women and children in Ethiopia due to a lack of funding.

The UN agency warned on Tuesday that 3.6 million people in Ethiopia overall are at risk of losing access to food aid in the coming weeks unless new financial support can urgently be sourced.

“WFP is being forced to halt treatment for 650,000 malnourished women and children in May due to insufficient funding,” the UN agency said in a statement.

The agency said it had planned to reach two million mothers and children with life-saving nutrition assistance in 2025 but will fall short due to a predicted funding shortfall of $222m between April and September.

“Cash and in-kind food assistance for up to one million refugees will stop in June if additional funding is not received,” the agency warned.

Like many aid agencies, the WFP is caught in the crosshairs of funding cuts instituted by the administration of United States President Donald Trump. Shortly after his inauguration in January, Trump signed an executive order freezing all foreign aid.

Conflict, instability and drought are key reasons why more than 10 million of Ethiopia’s 130 million people face the threat of hunger, the UN agency said.

The East African country is recovering from two years of brutal civil war between federal forces and rebels in the northern region of Tigray, which ended in November 2022 and killed at least 600,000 people.

Tensions are again mounting between longtime foes Ethiopia and Eritrea over Addis Ababa’s quest for maritime access, causing fears of yet another conflict in the Horn of Africa barely seven years after the two neighbours restored ties.

Continued violence and instability in Ethiopia’s Amhara region are also obstructing humanitarian operations, the WFP said, adding that below-average rainfall forecast through May in southeastern Ethiopia could further exacerbate conditions.

I’m ready to reconstruct burnt Adum market

0

Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong, has pledged to fully fund the reconstruction of the Adum BlueLight section of Kumasi’s Central Business District, which was recently destroyed by fire—pending approval from the Asantehene and city authorities.

The former Food and Agriculture Minister made the announcement during a visit to the market, where he also donated GHS 300,000 to affected traders.

The fire, which occurred on Friday, March 21, caused extensive property damage, leaving many traders struggling to resume operations.

In the absence of official clearance for reconstruction, some traders have erected temporary structures to continue their businesses.

Mr. Acheampong said he will consult with the Asantehene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, and other local authorities to seek approval for the project.

“Coming here today, you will see that they have started building, but the structures are very weak, yet they are supporting it with block work. But these are not stable. I want to engage the Otumfuo, who is out of the country, and if he permits, also the assembly permits, we want to rebuild this structure for them in 12 months.

“We will put in a very strong infrastructure, and then we will clean the front, put up some stores so that the traders here can have some normalcy to their lives.”

Don’t isolate Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called for renewed diplomatic engagement with the Alliance of Sahel States, following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The three countries, which formed the Alliance of Sahel States, have cited inconsistencies in ECOWAS’s operations as their reason for exiting the bloc.

However, in a bid to foster reconciliation, President Mahama extended an invitation to the breakaway nations to join the anniversary celebrations.

Speaking at the launch of ECOWAS’s 50th Anniversary in Accra on Tuesday, April 22, President Mahama described the departure of the three junta-led nations as a regrettable development, but stressed the importance of dialogue over isolation.

“The recent decision by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to withdraw from the ECOWAS is a regrettable development…we must respond not with isolation, recrimination, but with dialogue and the willing ability to listen and to engage,” he stated.

President Mahama emphasised the belief that unity and collaboration remain essential to achieving prosperity and stability across West Africa.

“Since assuming as president, I have prioritised diplomatic re-engagement with the Sahel region. Ghana has appointed a special envoy to engage in high level engagement with the Alliance of Sahel States. I have personally led missions to foster trust, rebuild communication channels and affirm our shared aspirations.

“These efforts affirms our believes that we have a shared destiny as a sub-region, and unity, however, difficult, remains the best part to shred prosperity and regional stability,” he stated.

Can Mahama suspend a Chief Justice? – What the law says

0

The brouhaha surrounding petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, continues with the latest update being her apparent suspension by President John Dramani Mahama.

The reports of the suspension of the Chief Justice, even though it has not been officially communicated, have divided the public, with a cross-section saying that the president’s action, if indeed it is true, is wrong.

But has President Mahama done anything wrong if he has truly suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo? What does the 1992 Constitution say about the suspension of the head of the judicial arm of government?

Article 146 of the constitution touches on the conditions under which the Chief Justice or any justice of the Superior Courts – the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the High Court – can be suspended.

The suspension is part of the process for the removal of the Chief Justice and any justice of the superior courts.

Article 146 states the conditions and processes to follow for the removal of the justices.

“(1) A Justice of the Superior Court or a Chairman of a Regional Tribunal shall not be removed from office except for stated misbehaviour or incompetence or on grounds of inability to perform the functions of his office arising from infirmity of body or mind.

“(2) A Justice of the Superior Court of Judicature or a Chairman of a Regional Tribunal may only be removed in accordance with the procedure specified in this article,” part of the article states.

Stages for the Removal of a Chief Justice.

1. Petition

The first stage of the process for the removal of these justices is the submission of a petition to the president.

In other words, a justice of the Superior Courts can only be ousted from office if a petition is submitted to the president, which is the case with the ongoing process for the removal of Justice Torkornoo.

2. What the President Does with the Petition

The second stage is the action the president takes after he receives the petition.

Here, the constitution makes provision for what the president should do depending on the Superior Court justice in question.

Article 146(3) states that for any of the Superior Court justices, the president is required to send the petition to any of the Chief Justices, who is to determine whether there is a case for the removal of the judge in question.

“If the President receives a petition for the removal of a Justice of a Superior Court other than the Chief Justice or for the removal of the Chairman of a Regional Tribunal, he shall refer the petition to the Chief Justice, who shall determine whether there is a prima facie case.”

In the case that the judge in question is the Chief Justice, the president, in consultation with the Council of State, appoints a committee which will recommend to the president whether the justice should be removed.

“(6) Where the petition is for the removal of the Chief Justice, the President shall, acting in consultation with the Council of State, appoint a committee consisting of two Justices of the Supreme Court, one of whom shall be appointed chairman by the President, and three other persons who are not members of the Council of State, nor members of Parliament, nor lawyers.

“(7) The committee appointed under clause (6) of this article shall inquire into the petition and recommend to the President whether the Chief Justice ought to be removed from office,” part of the article states.

Defence

Article 146(8) states that the judge whom the petition was filed against must be heard.

The judge is expected to face the committee in person or through legal representatives.

“All proceedings under this article shall be held in camera, and the Justice or Chairman against whom the petition is made is entitled to be heard in his defence by himself or by a lawyer or other expert of his choice.”

Suspension

Section 10 of Article 146 gives the president the power to suspend justices who are subjects of ongoing petitions, including the Chief Justice.

It states:

“Where a petition has been referred to a committee under this article, the President may –

(a) in the case of the Chief Justice, acting in accordance with the advice of the Council of State, by warrant signed by him, suspend the Chief Justice;

(b) in the case of any other Justice of a Superior Court or of a Chairman of a Regional Tribunal, acting in accordance with the advice of the Judicial Council, suspend that Justice or that Chairman of a Regional Tribunal.”

The president also has the power to revoke the suspension. Article 146(11) states:

“The President may, at any time, revoke a suspension under this article.”

What Legal Experts Have Said About Suspension:

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo if there is indeed a case for her removal, saying that it would be improper for Justice Torkornoo to remain in office if there is a legitimate basis for her removal.

He stated that if a committee is established to investigate the petitions for her removal, her continued stay in office could interfere with the process.

He indicated that Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution obliges the president to suspend the Chief Justice under such circumstances.

“The moment the committee is set up, the president is then obliged to (may) suspend the Chief Justice, and I think it is fair.

“While the committee is inquiring into the allegation, the Chief Justice cannot remain in office because there is a likelihood of interference, and therefore, she has to step aside,” he is quoted as saying.

Conclusion:

The constitution clearly gives President Mahama the power to suspend a justice who is the subject of a petition, including the Chief Justice.

From the provisions of the constitution, nothing can stop the processes for the removal of the Chief Justice, including the suspension of the justice in question.

Seven factors behind Tanzania’s clean cities and universities

0

Seven major factors have been identified as reasons why some Tanzanian colleges and cities ranked first in the recently released national health and environmental cleanliness rankings.

The main drivers of university success were identified as prioritising cleanliness, signing contracts with professional cleaning companies, establishing waste disposal infrastructure, and converting waste into alternative energy sources.

For city councils, major contributing factors included the availability of designated landfills for waste disposal, collaboration between local leaders and citizens, outsourcing waste collection to private companies, and installing waste bins in highly populated areas.

These revelations were made by leaders of the winning institutions and municipalities, following the recent announcement by the ministry of Health of the national winners of the 2025 Health and Environmental Cleanliness Competition over the weekend.

Among the 19 universities assessed, the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha scored the highest, 93.3 percent.

It was followed by Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), which garnered 89.6 percent. Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS) came third with a score of 84.5 percent, followed by St Augustine University of Tanzania in Mwanza at 71.5 percent, and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), located in Ubungo Municipality, at 70.5 percent.

For cities, Tanga City Council emerged as the winner among the six cities assessed, with a score of 83.2 percent.

Mbeya City came second with 81.5 percent, and Arusha City followed closely with 80.0 percent. Cities that scored lowest included Mwanza (79.2 percent), Dar es Salaam (71.2 percent), and Dodoma (70.8 percent).

The key criteria used in the evaluation included management of solid waste, access to safe and clean water, control of wastewater, proper toilet usage, cleanliness of markets, abattoirs, primary and secondary schools, municipal hospitals, banks, and the general aesthetic of streets and burial grounds.

NM-AIST Health Officer Achiwa Sapuli said their win was well-deserved, given the efforts the university has made to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

“First, we have a dedicated cleaning company under contract. Secondly, the university leadership is highly involved in monitoring cleanliness,” he said. “We maintain hygiene from student dormitories to toilets, administrative offices and the gardens, which are managed by a dedicated team.

“He added that NM-AIST has constructed proper drainage for wastewater, which is collected and recycled.

Additionally, all waste on campus is used to produce biogas or collected weekly by the contracted waste management firm. The institution also has specialised facilities to handle hazardous waste.

According to Mr Sapuli, this is not the first time NM-AIST has ranked first in the national competition. It also won in 2022 and placed third in 2023.

Acting Head of the Communications and Marketing Unit at SUA, Suzana Magobeko, attributed their success to strong leadership collaboration and placing cleanliness high on their agenda.

“We work closely with a cleaning company and treat sanitation as a health priority for both students and staff.

This win motivates us to keep improving our environment,” she said.

She added that criteria considered included the surrounding areas of the institution, availability of structured sanitation plans, access to quality toilets, handwashing facilities and overall hygiene levels.

Tanga City director Juma Hamsini attributed the city’s top ranking to effective cooperation between political leaders, city officials and private stakeholders involved in waste collection.

“We have community members who send photos of littered areas to officials, and prompt action is taken,” he explained.

He also noted that modern waste collection vehicles had been acquired and that waste bins were strategically placed in areas that generate large volumes of refuse.

Furthermore, hospitals and health centres in Tanga separate medical waste and dispose of it in designated areas.

In Mbeya, City Director John Nchimbi said their progress came from encouraging broad participation in keeping the city clean.

“In previous years, we ranked last due to a lack of sufficient waste collection vehicles,” he said.

“We have since signed a contract with SUMA JKT, a waste management company that brought in enough vehicles to improve cleanliness significantly.

” According to Mr Nchimbi, outsourcing to SUMA JKT reduced operational costs and increased professionalism in waste collection.

He also highlighted the construction of a landfill capable of handling up to 300,000 tonnes of waste per week, which has helped eliminate long queues for waste disposal.

“We’ve also decentralised cleanliness responsibilities to the ward level.

Police officers and ward leaders educate citizens on hygiene.

Sometimes we inspect household toilets to ensure standards are met,” he said.

In addition, he said groups involved in waste management have been linked with the council’s loan scheme, and new garbage trucks from China are on the way to enhance their capacity.

On the other hand, Prof Bernadetha Kilian from the University of Dar es Salaam emphasised that UDSM’s efforts are deeply rooted in sustainability.

“As a historic institution with a vital role in national development, we focus on preserving the environment to improve both teaching and learning conditions,” she said.

“We work with various cleaning companies and educate students on the sustainable use of infrastructure and the campus environment.

We also utilise our in-house experts from the Botany Department, the Centre for Climate Change, and the Directorate of Estates to guide our environmental initiatives.”

Ghana to serve as bridge for West African unity – Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, April 22, GNA – Ghana stands ready to serve as a bridge to help re-knit the fabric of West African unity, President John Dramani Mahama, has stated.

“We believe that through sustained dialogue, patient diplomacy, and principled negotiation, we can restore cohesion and rebuild trust in our good community,” President Mahama stated in his

address at the launch of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra.

The event, on the theme “Stronger Together for a Brighter Future”, was attended by Liberian President Joseph Boakai, Togolese Prime Minister, Victoire Tomegah Dogbé, Mr Muhammad B. S. Jallow, the Vice President of The Gambia, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and representatives from all the 12-Member ECOWAS countries.

President Mahama said the recent decision by Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Sahel to withdraw from ECOWAS was a regrettable development.

“Yet, even in this, continuous engagements must remain our road star. We must respond not with isolation or recrimination, but with understanding, dialogue, and a willingness to listen and to engage,” he said.

“Since assuming office as President, I have prioritized diplomatic re-engagement with our Sahelian neighbors.”

He said Ghana had appointed a special envoy to initiate high-level conversations with the Alliance of Sahel States.

“I have personally led missions to foster trust, rebuild communication channels, and affirm our shared aspirations.”

President Mahama said these efforts reflected their belief that they had a shared destiny as a sub-region, and that unity, however difficult, remained the best path to shared prosperity and regional stability.

President Mahama said the period, called for giving greater solidarity and understanding for the difficult challenges that confronted their brothers in the Sahelian states.

He said diplomacy was not only about resolving disputes, and that it was about creating the conditions for peace, for inclusion and progress.

Adding that it was about fostering mutual respect and advancing their common interests.

He said in this regard, their commitment to integration through diplomacy must extend into economic, social, and cultural dimensions.

“Whether we are harmonizing trade negotiations, whether we are facilitating free movement of our people, or championing education and health cooperation, our diplomatic instruments must always work in the service of our people.”

President Mahama advocated the empowerment of ECOWAS institutions to act swiftly, credibly, and transparently.

“Our citizens must feel that ECOWAS is not some distant bureaucracy, but a living community that understands their struggles and champions their hopes,” he said.

“And let us never forget the power of soft diplomacy. Our shared languages, our new faith, our literature, and youth culture.”

He underscored that they were powerful tools binding them together more deeply than any treaty could.

“Let this 50th anniversary be a turning point for diplomacy in West Africa.”

He called for more investment in early warning systems, mediation capacities, and youths and women as peace builders.

He urged his fellow West African leaders to put position as sub-region ECOWAS, not only as a political and economic bloc, but as a diplomatic anchor for the continent; model of integration, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, in speech read by Madam Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, lauded President Mahama’s visionary leadership, unwavering dedication and steadfast commitment to regional integration and development ideals had been a source of inspiration and strength.

He said as a proud member of ECOWAS, Nigeria pledged to collaborate with every nation, large or small, to build an ECOWAS that was resilient and prepared to confront the challenges of their time.

Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, said in marking the 50th anniversary their objective was to celebrate, reflect, and recalibrate their community.

GNPC EXPLORCO To Spud Voltaian Well In 2026 Q1

0

Executives of energy and oil and gas sector institutions during a panel discussion

EXPLORCO, the exploration division of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), is set to spud its first exploration well in the Voltaian basin in Q1 2026, targeting new leads and play-opening discoveries.

The company is currently conducting research to support exploration and is inviting partners to help unlock this frontier basin.

Speaking at the Invest in African Energies: Accra Briefing held recently, Managing Director of EXPLORCO, Michael Aryeetey, emphasized, “We will go ahead with the Voltaian project because it is a key project for the country. This is historical because no exploration well has been drilled there since 1974. Because there is so much to do in the basin, the strategy is to invite other partners to explore and drill in the basin. We are looking for credible partners.”

The investor briefing provided insights into Ghana’s upstream investment opportunities, highlighting how infrastructure-driven exploration has become a top priority for the country.

This strategy is expected to attract diverse investments from exploration and production firms. According to Richard Gyan-Mensah, Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition of Ghana, “To investors, Ghana is open for business. There are vast unlicensed blocks offshore available through direct negotiations. There are also partnership or farm-in opportunities for some of the contract areas. Risk has been successfully reduced in some of these blocks.”

Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber (AEC), NJ Ayuk, commented that this approach reflects a “Ghanian-first strategy that benefits everyone. Ghana is back, it is ready for investment and ready for energy dominance. As we move forward, I want to encourage [stakeholders] to believe in the potential of Ghana. Believe in this country, believe in this energy sector.”

Echoing these remarks, President of the AEC in Ghana, David Pappoe, stated: “Ghana’s energy sector is at a pivotal stage and we need investment. We are here to discuss how we can drive investment into Ghana.”

To further support upstream investment, Ghana has been enhancing its regulatory and fiscal environments. Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle, Acting CEO of the Petroleum Commission of Ghana, noted, “A lot of work has been done on the regulatory side, and we will soon come to the public and announce these. The fiscal regime is something we are looking at, including the length of time taken to get permits and reporting issues and audits. We are looking at having a licensing round – it is a mandate of the Minister.”

These efforts are aimed at boosting spending in the upstream sector to mitigate production decline from Ghana’s mature fields. CEO of oil and gas company GOIL,Edward Abambire Bawa, stated, “From 2019 until now, production declined by 25 percent, due to many attributes such as lack of investment. We are currently assessing opportunities.”

One of the government’s main priorities is to increase production at the active Jubilee and TEN fields. Victor Kofi Sunu-Attah, former Advisor to the CEO and General Manager, Engineering at GNPC, explained, “We have 640 million barrels in the Jubilee, TEN and surrounding fields and 1.2 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. We are doing research to ensure that these resources can be brought to the surface. We invite investors to partner with companies that have 2D and 3D seismic on their blocks and are ready to drill.”

The Invest in African Energies: Accra Investor Briefing served as a precursor to this year’s African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies conference, taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town. The event provided a platform to discuss commercial oil and gas opportunities in Ghana, setting the stage for further discussions and deal-making in Cape Town.

0

Prophet Francis Amoako Atta Prophet Francis Amoako Atta

The founder of Parliament Chapel International, Prophet Francis Amoako Atta, has shared the inspiration behind the title of his ministry.

Speaking on ‘U Cook’, hosted by Empress Gifty on UTV on April 20, 2025, he revealed that the church was originally named ‘Freedom Chapel International’ before it was rebranded as Parliament Chapel International.

“Initially it was freedom chapel and now became parliament chapel. Freedom has where it ends, it doesn’t matter how you describe it, every freedom has a limit.

“My wish is to change things in my church. When you go to US, they don’t mention parliament, they call it senate. In the kingdom of God, church is God’s senate. That’s where they set and change rules” he revealed.

On the main reasons he chose the name ‘Parliament Chapel’, he stated,

“When things go wrong or when there’s a problem in the family and you run to the house of God, then everything changes. I decided to make my church God’s parliament so we could change things,” he said.

He added, “The church has been in existence for 25 years and we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary in October. I started ministry in 1996 and began with the church in 1998.”

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is the Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is the Minister of Health

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, was involved in what seemed to be a confrontation with an official of the management of the Tamale Teaching Hospital over the death of a patient at the facility’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

In the said video posted by TV3 on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Mintah Akandoh, accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Tamale North and Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, during a surprise visit to the hospital could be seen demanding answers regarding the incident.

However, an exchange with a hospital official visibly displeased the minister, who expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the official was addressing him.

Mintah Akandoh, expressing his displeasure, could be heard saying, “Even me a minister, look at the way you are behaving in front of me, so, you can imagine how you treat others.”

He further went on to condemn the official’s behavior, raising concerns about the facility’s approach to communication, particularly in how it engages with ordinary citizens who seek medical care.

“How can you behave like this. It means you are doing worse things here. I’m even worried about [sic]. There is a problem here so if a commoner comes around how can they talk to this man here. How would he be able to communicate with them. There is a problem,” Akandoh fumed.

The minister’s visit follows the death of a patient at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The hospital, in a statement confirming the incident, stated that the deceased patient was referred to their facility for a specialised procedure which is unavailable at their facility.

It refuted allegations of medical negligence on the part of the hospital stating that internal investigations by the facility has been commenced.

“The Management of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has taken note of reports circulating on social media concerning the unfortunate death of a patient at our Accident and Emergency Ward. These reports include allegations of negligence on the part of the hospital. Preliminary findings indicate that the patient, who was referred from another facility, required a specialized procedure that, regrettably, is not yet available at TTH.”

It added, “Additionally, all four of our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, which serve the entire Northern Ghana, were fully occupied at the time of the patient’s arrival. While we acknowledge and understand the public’s concern, we respectfully urge all stakeholders to remain calm and avoid drawing premature conclusions. The hospital has constituted an internal investigative team to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Four suspected gang members have been apprehended in Cato Manor, KwaZulu-Natal, following their alleged involvement in multiple killings throughout the province, police officials confirmed on Monday.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 33, were arrested on Saturday after authorities received intelligence about their whereabouts.

They are believed to have been responsible for “terrorising” the Amaoti community in Inanda for nearly a year.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the arrest followed strategic intelligence gathering that led authorities to a residence in Cato Manor.

“The suspects have so far been linked with more than 20 cases of murder and several cases of attempted murder, which they allegedly committed in the Amaoti area of Inanda from June 2024 to date,” said Netshiunda.

Netshiunda confirmed that during the operation, law enforcement recovered two firearms and ammunition, along with various suspected stolen items, including laptops and mobile phones.

According to Netshiunda, the police are continuing their investigation and searching for additional suspects who may be connected to the criminal activities.

The four individuals currently in custody are scheduled to appear before the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Police reports state that the successful arrest of the suspects was carried out by a specialised team comprising officers from multiple divisions, including Crime Intelligence, Cato Manor Crime Prevention, Inanda Detectives, and Durban Metro Police.

Ernest Owusu Bempah referred to NPP’s Disciplinary Committee over social media commentary

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken disciplinary action against Mr Ernest Owusu Bempah, the party’s Deputy Director of Communications, for comments he made on social media, which the party believes contravene internal directives.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, Mr Bempah is accused of making “several comments on social media which are suspected to be in contravention of the directives issued to all NPP members.”

The said directives were aimed at curbing discussions that could create disaffection within the party when aired publicly, particularly in the media.

The official statement emphasised that all members had previously been instructed to avoid public commentary that could harm party unity.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV, Mr Owusu Bempah, who served as Communications Director for Ghana Gas during the Akufo-Addo administration, stated that the NPP’s decision to field the then Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the candidate for the 2024 elections was a major factor in the disappointing voter turnout among its members.

Apostle Amoako Attah Links Pope Francis’ Death to Biblical Prophecy, Declares Open Heavens Over Ghana

0

Capture

Founder of Parliament Chapel International, Apostle Francis Amoako Attah, says the death of Pope Francis was not a surprise to the spiritually discerning, claiming he had prophetically foreseen the event weeks before it occurred.

Speaking on *Angel FM* today, the renowned preacher referenced past comments he made ahead of Easter, urging Ghanaians to avoid wearing black on Palm Sunday—a day he described as spiritually symbolic. “I said it before. People in Ghana don’t take time to seek answers but are quick to dismiss what they don’t understand,” he stated.

According to Apostle Amoako Attah, the red and white attire he encouraged on Palm Sunday reflected the colors of the cardinals—those tasked with electing a new pope. “From that time, the Pope was already gone,” he declared, linking the event to divine signs and scriptural revelations.

He connected Pope Francis’ final days to spiritual prophecy, stating that the pontiff had intentionally left the hospital earlier this year to “show himself to the world” one last time before his death. “He didn’t want to die in the hospital. He wanted to return and bless the people who had once blessed him,” he said.

Citing Revelation 6:7-8, Apostle Amoako interpreted the “pale horse” in scripture as a prophetic symbol tied to Italy—the Pope’s home. “Green, white, and red—the colours of Italy’s flag—represent the pale horse in prophecy. The angel of death began his journey from Italy,” he said.

He also suggested that the timing of Pope Francis’ death creates a divine opening for Ghana. He pointed to Cardinal Peter Turkson, a Ghanaian and former head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, as a prophetic contender for the papacy. “He is 76, just like Pope Francis when he was chosen. The heavens are open over Ghana,” he declared.

Apostle Amoako further warned Ghanaians to be spiritually vigilant in the coming days. “From now, always wear a touch of red when stepping out. On April 30th, all the witches and wizards in the world will gather—do not wear black,” he warned, urging people to remain alert during what he described as a spiritually charged season.

He concluded with a call for individuals to seek their “destiny helpers,” referencing the varying gospel accounts of angels at Jesus’ tomb to illustrate that everyone needs someone to help them fulfill their divine purpose.

Children advised to develop the spirit of volunteerism

By Emmanuel Nyatsikor

Adaklu Kodzobi (V/R), April 22, GNA – Miss Faustina Babah, the leader of All Souls For Christ Foundation, a Christian Non-Governmental Organisation based in Ho has advised children to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism, to help develop their families and communities.

She said though very young they were indispensable members of their families and society at large.

Miss Babah gave the advice when the Foundation hosted an Easter picnic for over 400 children at Adaklu Kodzobi in the Adaklu district.

There were musical chairs, a dance competition, recital of memory verses and pick and act as part of the programme.

The children were also given food, confectionaries and soft drinks, whilst the aged were also given used clothing.

Miss Babah in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the programme was an annual affair which they usually hosted in rural communities, adding that this year they were led by the Holy Spirit to go to Adaklu Kodzobi.

She told the children that it was only through accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal saviour that they could achieve their God-given potentials.

Miss Babah urged them to shy away from negative vices including fornication, alcoholism, hard drugs, peer pressure and pilfering.

She advised them to choose the path of obedience and humility saying, “these treats are the fruits of the Holy Spirit,” that would make them great.

Miss Babah encouraged them to focus on their studies and encouraged parents to invest in the education of their children so as to reap the enormous future benefits.

She also encouraged parents to instill the virtues of the Christian life in their children and mould them to become responsible adults in future.

Miss Betty Deh, on behalf of the children thanked the Foundation for “putting smiles on their faces” and making their Easter a memorable one.

Mr Seth Soglo, a Youth Leader of the community, extended his appreciation to the Foundation and pledged the preparedness of the community to assist the children to develop their talents.

Gov’t’s comprehensive strategy to expand energy infrastructure

0

As part of a comprehensive strategy to expand the country’s energy infrastructure and maximise the value of its hydrocarbon resources, plans are afoot to construct three oil refineries, five hydro chemical plants and ten tank farms.

The Deputy Energy and Green Transition Minister, Richard Gyan-Mensah, made this public at the ‘2025 Invest in African Energies: Accra Investor Briefing’.

Generational Rights Protection Society to protest on April 28 over galamsey

0

Generational Rights Protection Society, an anti-galamsey advocacy group, is set to embark on a protest on April 28, 2025, demanding a clear blueprint with regard to the fight against illegal mining.

The advocacy group at a press conference earlier today highlighted the continuous deterioration of water bodies and forest reserves, calling for an immediate declaration of a state of emergency.

Speaking at the press conference, Convener of the Generational Rights Protection Society Kwame Appiah Kubi stated that the fight against illegal mining should be apolitical in order to restore the country’s forest reserves.

“The mission and the fight still remain that galamsey, as we spoke about last year ahead of the election, is still happening today. Even as we speak today, the expectation for which we thought that by now we ought to have seen some level of changes within our environment is not so.

“And so it has every bearing on us as citizens not to relent on our efforts, but also to let the entire nation understand the fact that galamsey is still predominant as we speak,” he said.

The demonstration scheduled for April 28 will commence at 2 pm from the Obra Sports Stadium to the Jubilee House.

Meanwhile, Co-Convenor of the Generational Rights Protection Society, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, emphasised that if charges of illegal operations are levelled against Akonta Mining, they should be prosecuted.

This follows the directive by the Lands Minister to revoke the mining license of Womtumi’s Akonta Mining.

“If Akonta Mining was given a license and the company didn’t abide by the rules, and if this revocation is not mere propaganda, then there must be prosecution,” he stated.

‘Beeztrap’s manager demanded GH¢10,000 to appear on Fakye Showbiz’ – Abro alleges

0

Media personality Mawuli Ekpe Peter, popularly known as Abro, has expressed disappointment in Beeztrap’s manager over what he described as ‘absurd’ demands.

In a video circulating on social media on April 21, 2025, Abro, who also serves as a panelist on Fakye Showbiz, alleged that Beeztrap’s management demanded GH¢10,000 before agreeing to allow the artiste to appear for an interview on the show.

“We’ve had major personalities like Kwaku Manu, McBrown, and Shatta Wale sit on this show. Can you imagine that when our producer reached out to Beeztrap’s manager, he said they would charge GH¢10,000 before the artiste could come on?” he quizzed.

Abro further stated that he would resign as a panelist on the show if the media house pays any amount for Beeztrap to show up.

“I want to state emphatically that we won’t give him even GH¢1. Don’t tell me to calm down. Over my dead body if you pay him any money.

“I will resign if Fakye TV gives him a dime. Did Shatta Wale take any money when he came on this show? It’s very annoying that a big producer from Fakye TV reaches out to you, and that’s the response you give,” he stated.

‘Enough is enough’ – Wontumi to sue lands minister over Akonta Mining licence

0

Lands minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah and Chairman Wontumi Lands minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah and Chairman Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has stated that his company, Akonta Mining Limited, is going to sue the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, over the revocation of the company’s mining licence.

Chairman Wontumi, in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, accused the minister of defaming Akonta Mining with the things he said at a press conference on Monday, April 21, 2025, where he ordered the revocation of the company’s licences.

According to him, none of the things the minister said about his company engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, in the Western Region, are true.

“What we are saying is that we (Akonta mining) are not operating. All the things the minister is saying are lies. I’m no longer going to sit without taking action.

“Enough is enough. We are certainly going to take him (the lands minister) to court. He has defamed us. The things he is saying are not true,” Wontumi said in the Twi dialect.

Chairman Wontumi accused the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, of bringing the mining equipment of illegal miners to Akonta Mining’s compound to make it seem like they were engaging in an illegality.

“He (the minister) has made the security officers transport the excavators and other mining equipment of some people and move them to our yard. We had only two bulldozers and excavators, which were being used for the reclamation of the land. None of my machines were there,” he claimed.

He told GhanaWeb that his company cannot be engaging in any illegality in the Tano Forest Reserve because it was stopped from operating there since the previous government suspended its licence in 2023.

He added that God will punish any person(s) who are bent on destroying him and destroying his businesses.

“God punishes every person who enjoys destroying other people. He punishes them in his own way. Some people become sick…” he added

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, during a press briefing on April 21, 2025, directed the Minerals Commission to revoke the mining licence of Akonta Mining Ltd over illegal operations.

According to him, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission led to the discovery of six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta Mining.

The minister said that the operation in Compartment 49, which began at 5 AM and lasted a whopping 12 hours, resulted in:

– 51 arrests (8 Chinese, 39 Ghanaian men, 4 Ghanaian women)

– Seizure of about 30 excavators, 5 recovered and impounded at the operation base, 2 pump-action guns loaded with 5 and 2 rounds of BB cartridges each; one single-barrel gun retrieved

– Confiscation of 2 Toyota Hilux pickups, 1 Toyota RAV4, four motorbikes, and a cache of mining equipment.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the establishment of a 25-year master plan aimed at transforming the region’s infrastructure, with an estimated investment of $131 billion.

The plan outlines a comprehensive strategy to boost regional integration and economic development through large-scale infrastructure projects across member states.

Speaking at the launch of the 50th ECOWAS Anniversary celebration in Accra on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, described the plan as a pivotal step toward building a more connected, competitive, and economically vibrant region.

He noted that the initiative is expected to address critical gaps in cross-border connectivity, reduce trade barriers, and enhance the overall resilience of the region’s infrastructure.

“ECOWAS has developed a 25-year master plan which comprises 201 regional projects covering all member states. These have been estimated to cost about 131 billion dollars, targeting key sectors such as transport, energy, telecommunications, and water resources,” Dr Touray stated.

As part of this initiative, he highlighted the launch of several key infrastructure projects, including the Lagos–Abidjan Corridor Highway, the Abidjan–Praia Corridor Highway, various secondary corridors, and joint border posts.

“The 1,028-kilometer Lagos–Abidjan Corridor Highway is one of the largest infrastructure projects on the continent. So far, about 42 million dollars has been successfully mobilised to finance the technical preparatory studies of the project,” he added.

Dr Touray further emphasised that these infrastructure efforts align with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), aimed at fostering seamless trade and economic opportunities across the region.

“The ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme is the region’s preferential trade arrangement. Since its inception, over 15,000 companies have been registered under the scheme, benefiting from preferential treatment on more than 50,000 products within ECOWAS,” he said.

Arson attack targets home of Tanzania’s ruling party official in Mbeya

0

ension has gripped a neighbourhood in Mbeya following a suspected arson attack at the residence of a senior official of Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 23, when unidentified individuals reportedly broke into the home of CCM’s Mbeya Urban Publicity Secretary, Mr Philimon Mng’ong’o, and set his vehicle on fire.

The blaze, which broke out shortly after 4am, threatened to spread to nearby houses. Eleven people who were inside the residence at the time escaped unhurt.

In an interview at his home, Mr Mng’ong’o said that just a week earlier, unknown persons had stolen a tyre from the same Nissan X-Trail vehicle (registration number T566 CXL), which had been parked temporarily.

“Although this incident is both shocking and distressing, I am not inclined to link it to politics. I have no personal disputes with anyone, whether within or outside the party,” he said. “It may be tied to economic grievances, but I leave the matter to the security organs to investigate thoroughly.”

He recounted how the fire was first noticed by his wife, who had woken up for early morning prayers.

“She heard a strange noise and went to check. We saw the fire, along with a container of petrol. Flames had already begun to spread towards neighbouring houses. We attempted to call the fire brigade, but they couldn’t be reached in time. We managed to extinguish the fire using sand,” he said.

Local leaders have condemned the attack. A local government official in Isanga Kati, Mr Bakari Yusuph, described the incident as deeply concerning and called for an emergency meeting to address growing security concerns.

“This is the first time such an incident has occurred in our area. It has shocked the entire community. We are planning an urgent meeting at both street and ward levels to assess the situation and identify necessary actions,” he said.

“We are also appealing to the Police and other security agencies to fast-track investigations and ensure those responsible are held accountable.”

One of the tenants in the affected house, Ms Diana Yusuph, said the incident nearly claimed lives.

“We thank God we survived. Otherwise, this could have been a day of mourning. The government must take firm action to prevent such acts,” she said.

Reacting to the incident, CCM’s Regional Secretary for Ideology and Publicity in Mbeya, Mr Christopher Uhagile, said the party was disturbed by the attack.

“We have not received any report suggesting our official is involved in any dispute, either internally or externally. We are taking time to reflect and hope to get the full picture soon,” he said.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander, SACP Benjamin Kuzaga, confirmed the incident when contacted by phone. He said investigations were underway.

“I am aware of the incident, and our Regional Crime Officer is already at the scene. I am currently in Kyela but will provide further details upon my return,” he said.

Minerals Commission insists it has evidence to nail Akonta Mining for galamsey

0

The Minerals Commission has dismissed suggestions of arbitrary action, insisting that the decision to revoke the licence of Akonta Mining Limited was based on clear evidence of violations.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Andrew Tandoh, affirmed that the authorities revoked the mining permits after gathering substantial proof, which includes visual evidence implicating Akonta Mining Limited.

“The conditions and the videos we have now are more than enough to go after the perpetrators. The Attorney General has been advised to pursue these matters and ensure that those behind these offences are brought to book,” he said on Tuesday, 22 April.

“People can write letters and issue rebuttals in the newspapers; that is not something I will concern myself with. This is just the beginning. We will allow the Attorney General to take over and ensure that the masterminds behind these illicit operations are dealt with in a manner that deters others,” he emphasised in an interview with Citi FM.

He was responding to rebuttals by Akonta Mining Limited, which condemned the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, over the decisive action to halt the mining company’s operations.

At a press conference to expose the activities of Akonta Mining Limited, Mr Buah alleged that the firm was engaged in illegal mining (galamsey) and other unlawful activities.

“This company has not only trespassed into protected reserves but has become a criminal syndicate, selling access to the Aboi Forest Reserve to illegal miners for a staggering GH₵300,000 per concession,” the minister revealed.

“Worse still, these illegal miners operate under Akonta’s protection, devastating the River Tano and surrounding forests with impunity,” Mr Buah lamented. “As part of the agreement between Akonta Mining and the illegal miners, weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold are to be paid to the company, lining the pockets of Akonta’s collaborators.”

“In light of the overwhelming evidence, I have authorised the Minerals Commission to take steps to revoke the lease of Akonta Mining Co. Ltd with immediate effect.”

However, Akonta Mining Limited responded, accusing the government of “a clear breach of natural justice and a politically motivated act”.

“The Honourable Minister’s decision to publicly link Akonta Mining to illegal mining activities and to call for the revocation of our mining licence is not only unjust and premature, but also a clear case of seeking to hang the dog and give it a bad name,” the company stated.

The company also denied allegations of illegally selling concessions within the Aboi Forest to unauthorised miners for up to GH₵300,000, and, in some cases, in exchange for gold royalties.

Politics is not a ‘dirty game’

Senior lecturer at KNUST, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong Senior lecturer at KNUST, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong

A senior lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Development KNUST, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, has urged Christians to engage in politics, dispelling the notion that it is a “dirty game.”

According to him, politics is about managing interests and relationships, and Christians can make a positive impact by serving in this sphere.

Speaking on GHone TV on April 22, 2025, Dr Opuni-Frimpong emphasised the importance of nurturing the next generation of politicians from the church, citing examples of similar initiatives in other countries such as Angola.

“This notion that politics is dirty; politics is not dirty. I run a program for Christian Council of Angola. Deliberately, now, they are bringing church people – youth, and preparing them to go into politics. We do that in church. The churches in Ghana must start it as well, the next generation of our politicians must be raised in church,” he indicated.

He encouraged the church to play a role in preparing Ghanaian youth for public service and politics, promoting good governance and leadership.

“Politics is good. Politics is not dirty. The mere fact that there are excesses doesn’t mean it’s bad. There are good pastors, bad pastors, good chiefs, bad chiefs. In fact, I think you also have some bad media people. So, I will encourage the church to prepare the youth into politics to promote good governance,” he stated.

Ghana surpasses IMF reserve target set for May 2026

0

As of February 2025, Ghana's reserves stood at $9.3 billion, equivalent to 4 months of import cover As of February 2025, Ghana’s reserves stood at $9.3 billion, equivalent to 4 months of import cover

Ghana has surpassed a key benchmark under its ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) program by more than a year ahead of schedule signaling growing economic stability and strengthening investor confidence.

According to the latest review following a staff-level agreement between the Government of Ghana and the IMF, the country’s gross international reserves have already exceeded the target initially set for May 2026.

Data released by the Bank of Ghana also show that as of February 2025, Ghana’s reserves stood at $9.3 billion, equivalent to four months of import cover.

This represents a significant milestone under the three-year, $3 billion Extended Credit Facility arrangement, and places the country well ahead of its reserve accumulation goals.

Economic experts have described this development a strong signal of resilience, which is likely to strengthen investor trust and support currency stability in the near term.

Meanwhile, Ghana is expected to receive a $370 million disbursement from the IMF in June 2025 after the completion of the fourth review of the IMF program.

The funds are expected to reinforce the central bank’s efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability and safeguard foreign exchange reserves.

Additionally, government is expected to enhance coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities to help anchor inflation expectations and stabilise the cedi.

I have no reason to doubt the competence of the IGP – Dr Kwame Asah-Asante

0

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has expressed confidence in the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, explaining that he has no reason to question the police capo’s competence.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Monday, April 21, Dr Asah-Asante noted that any expression of confidence or concern must be assessed against tangible actions and developments.

“We must also remind ourselves that if people say they have confidence in somebody and all that, it is founded on a certain premise,” he said.

According to Dr Asah-Asante, while public expressions of confidence or concern are valid, they must be grounded in concrete evidence and observable developments.

“I have no reason to doubt the competence of the IGP, and I’m yet to see the kind of things he is putting in place that will warrant that kind of responses and all that. For me, it’s early days yet,” he shared.

WR ECG Schools Military Officers

Staff of ECG and the participants

Military officials from the National College of Defence Studies in Accra have been taken through the value chain of the energy sector at a seminar organised for them by the Western Region office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This was when the military personnel visited the regional offices of the ECG to familiarise themselves with its operations.

The National College of Defence Studies, established in May, 2023, seeks to prepare senior military officers and personnel from allied African countries in related field of Defence and National Security for strategic level leadership.

The team was made up of 26 members drawn from the Ghana Armed Forces, Metropolitan and District Assemblies (MDAs), and three allied Participants from Nigeria, Rwanda and Zambia.

Speaking at the seminar, the Regional General Manager of ECG, Ing. Emmanuel J. Ofori, explained that the core business of the company is to distribute electricity to support the nation’s socio-economic growth.

He indicated that, the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Independent Power Producers (IPPS) generate the electricity, whereas the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) does the transmission.

Ing. Ofori mentioned that the Regional ECG ensures that there is quality and stable electricity supply across the region.

He said, “However, there could be some outages which may occur as a result of faults, overgrown vegetation, bush fires, felling of trees among others”.

He added that, the region embarks on vegetation control and other preventive measures to mitigate such challenges.

For his part, Ing. Yaw Sarfo also said the company is bedeviled with challenges such as illegal connections, vandalisation of transformers, and infiltration of fake or foreign meters.

“These unscrupulous activities negatively impact our operations and increase system losses,” he added.

The team also visited the Ketan Bulk Supply Point (BSP) where they were briefed about the transmission operations of the GRIDCo and distribution done by ECG.

The leader of the team, Air Commodore Odoi Wellington, described the visit as an eye opener and revealing.

He expressed immense appreciation to the management of ECG for the knowledge imparted.
