GFA must have a structure for developing players

0

Experienced Ghanaian coach Karim Zito has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to implement stricter measures to enhance player development in the country.

Ghana, a four-time African champion, has increasingly relied on European-born players to bolster the senior national team in recent years. However, Zito, who currently coaches Dreams FC, believes this trend stems from the nation’s failure to establish a consistent and structured player development system.

In an interview, he warned that Ghana’s struggles on the international stage would persist unless a proper succession plan was put in place.

He identified the lack of continuity in player development as a major weakness holding back the country’s football progress.

“In the past, players progressed naturally through the ranks, but today, we dismantle teams after every competition and start scouting all over again,” Zito lamented in an interview with Graphic Sports.

“That’s our biggest problem—there is no consistency. If a player features for the under-17 team, he should automatically move to the under-19 side. You don’t just discard them and begin afresh,” he said.

The 64-year-old coach urged Ghana to adopt a structured model similar to top European football nations, where a clear pathway exists for young players to transition seamlessly into the senior team.

“What is troubling the Black Stars? Why are we always searching for new players?” Zito questioned.

“It’s because our junior teams are not producing top talent consistently, and that’s down to poor development structures. The media also plays a role; they keep attacking coaches instead of supporting long-term growth. We focus too much on instant results, but you can’t achieve success without first laying strong foundations,” he stressed.

Turning his attention to the current Black Stars, he posed a crucial question, “How many of our senior players today actually came through the junior ranks?”

Was this not the man who we thought was so rich? What happened to his money?—Afenyo Markin

0

Alexander Afenyo Markin, a prominent Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, recently opened up about his experiences during his time in opposition between 2013 and 2016, sharing insights into the issue of corruption and its broader societal implications. Speaking at an event, Markin noted that during his tenure in opposition, he had businessmen sharing documents with him, pushing him to speak out about corruption.

“I see the room packed,” Afenyo Markin began, acknowledging the presence of influential individuals such as professors, police chiefs, and key personalities in the audience. He continued, “I have had the benefit of reading what my respected brother and senior at the back have shared with you, and I would attempt to add my voice by way of review to some of the issues that you raised. Indeed he was spot on, particularly on legal and constitutional reforms.”

Markin went on to raise a critical question: “Do we often narrow the issue of corruption and limit it to the political class, or should we broaden it and look at it as part of the general life of all of us as a people?” He argued that corruption is not just a political issue but a societal one, affecting everyone, regardless of their position.

Reflecting on his time in opposition, Markin recalled how businessmen would approach him with documents related to corruption and encourage him to speak out about it on radio. However, as he continued to navigate the complexities of Accra’s political and business environment, he came to a realization: “When I understood how dark Accra was, I realized that those who don’t get their contract through are the ones who complain about corruption, but those who get theirs through go to church in white and thank God.”

Markin’s remarks also extended to former legislators and ministers, noting that some of them, despite their public personas, appeared far less wealthy than one would expect. “When you see them, you will ask if they were really in public life. Was this not the man who we thought was so rich? What happened to his money?” he questioned.

This style is perfect for a chic and fashionable look while still maintaining cultural roots. The two-piece set can be dressed up with heels or dressed down for a more casual yet trendy appearance.

For a more regal look, the Ankara and lace A-line dress is a fabulous choice. The A-line dress offers a relaxed and flattering fit that works well for any body shape. Lace can be used for the sleeves, back panel, or hem of the dress, giving it a modern yet timeless appeal. Paired with statement jewelry and a sleek hairstyle, this combination exudes grace and sophistication.

This combination offers a playful yet elegant vibe, ideal for both professional settings and social outings.

In conclusion, Ankara and lace combinations offer endless possibilities for ladies looking to express their unique sense of style. These styles seamlessly fuse tradition with modern trends, allowing women to make a fashionable statement while staying connected to their African roots.

I am grateful to Akufo-Addo for not appointing me as board member of any institution -Jennifer Queen

0

According to GhanaWeb, Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jennifer Queen, has conveyed her appreciation to former President Akufo-Addo for not offering her any political appointment during his tenure.

The politician explained that avoiding such roles has spared her from the alleged harassment and legal challenges some NPP members are currently facing under the Mahama-led administration.

She claimed that being free from these pressures has allowed her to maintain peace of mind.

In an interview on Angel FM, Jennifer Queen remarked that not being placed on the board of any institution under Akufo-Addo’s government had shielded her from potential persecution.

She suggested that had she been given such a position, she might have been subjected to arrests and investigations, as has been the case with some other party members.

She expressed her gratitude to the former president for this decision.

“So, former President Akufo-Addo, I greet you this morning, and I am grateful to you for not appointing me as a board member of any institution,” she stated.

In recent weeks, several prominent members of the NPP have reportedly faced legal troubles, including arrests and invitations for questioning by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) over corruption allegations.

One such incident involved Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF).

He was detained by the NIB concerning his alleged involvement in the failed $3 billion Accra Sky Train project.

Reports indicate that he authorized the release of $2 million to Africa Investor Holdings, the company managing the project, before feasibility studies were conducted.

The funds, according to reports, have not been recovered.

Additionally, former Minister of Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, was invited by the NIB for questioning over his role in the same project.

Minority boycotts orientation programme for MPs

0

The Minority in Parliament has refused to attend a 3-day orientation programme for Members of the House ongoing at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho.

According to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, the Minority, through a notice, protested the cost of the event hence their withdrawal.

The cost of the programme was not immediately known.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the event, he said “their reason is that the cost component is too much, and they don’t want to be part of that.”

He found the decision unfortunate to the progress of the House, and Ghana’s democracy given the importance of the orientation which would prepare members, especially new entrants for the task ahead for the next four years.

Speaker Bagbin explained that the venue among other arrangements, was decided on and recommended by a search party following a comprehensive evaluation of several factors.

“There is a good reason why we choose venues for this, it’s not partisan -there is always a search party and they go around, discuss with the various hospitalities, look at the cost components, their facilities, their suitability, and the convenience of your movement because there are other pressures on you and there are score marks before we decide where to go”, he said.

He concluded that Volta Serene Hotel was selected after it met all the ideals needed to host such an important event which is geared towards protecting and developing the country’s democracy.

The 3-day orientation programme would provide the members of parliament with in-depth insights into their duties and responsibilities and equip them to be effective and successful members.

They will be provided training in parliamentary practices, lobbying, advocacy skills, and debating skills among others.

A former deputy Western Regional youth organizer of NDC and NDC activist in the Ellembelle District, Abizi Morkeh has reminded His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama to honour his campaign promise by appointing an Nzema as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to manage the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) at Atuabo in the Ellembelle District.

According to him, the situation at Ghana Gas does not warrant a technocrat or engineer as the CEO.

Speaking on West-End Radio morning show at Ambainu on the need for President Mahama to appoint a CEO of Ghana Gas, he said the ability to manage and ensure efficiency at the operations of the national asset, he said though the immediate past CEO of Ghana Gas, Dr Ben Asante was an engineer, yet he cannot be compared to Dr. George Sipa Yankey who was his predecessor in terms of how the latter managed the Company.

“If it is engineer that will be used as a yardstick for appointment as CEO, then Dr Ben Asante is an internationally recognized engineer but could not manage Ghana Gas like Dr George Sipa Yankey did though not an engineer.

He said if you compare Dr. Ben Asante to the pedigree of Dr Robert Kofi Lartey as a CEO, Dr. Ben Asante ranks higher but could not manage Ghana Gas even more than Dr. George Sipa Yankey who is not an engineer left a better Ghana Gas than Dr. Ben Asante.

“So this time round,it is not a matter of being an engineer, it is about someone who can manage,an administrator who should manage the asset. There are technocrats at Ghana Gas who should report to the CEO on what is going on for the CEO to manage the facility”.

He, therefore took the opportunity to appeal to President John Mahama to appoint an Nzema as Ghana Gas company.

“We Nzemas are keepable of managing the Ghana Gas company, President Mahama should not make a staff of the company as the CEO because that will not ensure transparency and accountability, someone who is not a staff of the company can have courage to reset the company in order to ensure accountability and transparency”, he urged.

I did a better job of taking care of Kwadee than his family has done

Radio personality Hammer Nti Radio personality Hammer Nti

Radio personality Hammer Nti has debunked claims that he does not seek the well-being of Okomfo Kwadee.

He says pictures on the internet are proof enough of how Kwadee was recovering under his care until his family came in.

Hammer Nti indicated that he is not Kwadee’s manager but a friend who loves him and decided to ensure that he regains his sanity.

The radio personality is shocked that after all that he did to ensure that Kwadee lives the best of life, his mother has not appreciated his efforts.

“You can attest to the fact that when I was taking care of Kwadee, he looked good. Check from photos online, and you’ll know that he was better under my care than he currently is.

“I am officially not Kwadee’s manager, but I decided to take care of him because I love him. I’ve been with him since 2019 because he is a brother and a friend I love so much,” he said on Accra-based UTV.

Kwadee’s mother exposes Hammer Nti’s ‘misinformation’ about son’s struggles

Mother of musician Okomfo Kwadee has debunked reports suggesting that she has a hand in her son’s mental health challenges.

She says that the narrative is being pushed by Hammer Nti, who was taking care of the musician.

The woman explains that she had always wanted Kwadee to be handled by Lord Kenya, who went through a similar ordeal and came out successful.

However, Hammer Nti did not want to use that route due to his interest.

“I met Lord Kenya, and he told me that Kwadee was his friend. He asked if Kwadee went naked, and I said no. Then Lord Kenya told me that his father had suffered, and his wife had too. He told me that at one point, he wanted to beat his father.

“He said it was when he worked hard, but people were taking the money he got from the work. He assured me that my son would be fine and prayed for me. I told Hammer that I wanted Lord Kenya to handle my son, but he got angry, so I rescinded my decision and allowed him to do his work.

“I’ve never been against people helping my son. I can never do that, and that narrative should not be made to fester. If we had given him to Lord Kenya and my son had regained his sanity and become like Lord Kenya, it would have been a good thing, but because of his personal interest, Hammer did not want that. They always say that his mother is behind his problems, but that is not the truth. I won’t do that to my son,” she said.

Kenkey is 7 cedis, yet you talk about growth – Martin Kpebu challenges Dr. Domfeh

Private private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu Private private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly criticised economist Dr. George Domfeh for what he describes as an analysis that ignores the everyday struggles of Ghanaians.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, Kpebu argued that economic growth figures mean little if they do not translate into real improvements in people’s lives.

“Dr. Domfeh, if you don’t analyse and put the citizen at the center—front and center—your analysis is going nowhere,” Kpebu stated.

“The Constitution is clear: it’s not just about economic growth but about securing the maximum welfare, freedom, and happiness of every Ghanaian,” he said.

His comments came in response to Dr. Domfeh’s economic assessment, which, while acknowledging economic hardships, quickly shifted focus to macroeconomic indicators.

Kpebu found this approach unacceptable, questioning the relevance of economic growth if it fails to create jobs.

“You admit people are suffering but quickly move on to macroeconomic figures. What’s the use of economic growth if it’s jobless growth?” he asked.

Kpebu also challenged Dr. Domfeh’s omission of key facts regarding Ghana’s history with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He emphasised that economic discussions must be grounded in reality, pointing out inconsistencies in past and present policies.

“From John Mahama’s time, Ghana was under an IMF program. Did we receive IMF money or not? Did we extend the IMF program or not? These are facts, yet you left them out of your analysis,” he stated.

Using real-life examples, Kpebu highlighted the increasing cost of living, stressing that economic growth must be felt at the grassroots level.

“Kenkey is between five and seven cedis, and Koko is no less than three cedis. The prices of basic goods have skyrocketed, yet you talk about economic growth as though that’s all that matters. This is why your analysis falls short.”

How can a business survive at 39% interest? – Otokunor questions Ghana’s Economic Policies

Agricultural economist and economic policy expert, Peter Boamah Otokunor Agricultural economist and economic policy expert, Peter Boamah Otokunor

Agricultural economist and economic policy expert, Peter Boamah Otokunor, has called for a shift in economic policies to prioritize sectors that directly impact the lives of Ghanaians, particularly agriculture.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints, he challenged the narrative that a 6.3% GDP growth rate is a true reflection of economic progress.

“When you want to design your economic policy to respond to the needs of the people, you look at where it matters most, where it affects the people most,” he said, arguing that macroeconomic figures often paint an incomplete picture of real-life economic struggles.

Using his own experience as an example, Otokunor revealed the difficulties faced by businesses due to high interest rates.

“Last year, I wanted to expand my poultry farm, and I needed some funding… I was looking at an interest rate of about 39%.

“Now, if I’m going to borrow at 39%, considering all the other business factors, how would that business survive?” he questioned.

The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has announced the safe and successful completion of its critical pipeline maintenance activities and the resumption of gas transportation services in Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

The maintenance project included offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection, subsea valve replacements, and other essential works across multiple locations in Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.

The project, which spanned four weeks, involved temporarily shutting down the pipeline laterals into Cotonou, Benin, Lomé, Togo and Tema, Ghana.

A statement signed by Dr Isaac Adjei Doku, General Manager, Corporate Affairs of WAPCo, and copied to the Ghana News Agency said despite the complexities and challenges, the project was completed ahead of schedule with remarkable efficiency and safety.

Madam Michelle Burkett, WAPCo’s Managing Director, praised the team for their outstanding effort, saying, “I want to congratulate every member of our team for their dedication and professionalism.

“This was a complex project, and your hard work, even in the face of challenges, made it a success.”

She said while some countries experienced temporary disruptions due to the shutdown of the laterals, the team worked tirelessly to ensure that the maintenance work was carried out swiftly and safely.

“The results speak for themselves, and I could not be prouder of what we have achieved,” she added.

Kumchacha begs Mahama for appointment for sacrificing to bring him back to power

Prophet Nicholas Osei alias Kumchacha Prophet Nicholas Osei alias Kumchacha

Prophet Kumchacha has begged President John Dramani Mahama to appoint him a part of his government.

Kumchacha wants to be in charge of a ministry to manage Ghanaian prophets and pastors working against God’s work.

Kumchacha, regardless of the president’s pledge to reduce the number of ministries and existence of the religious affairs ministry, wants a ministry created for him to check false prophets, among others.

According to Kumchacha, he has worked hard for the John Dramani Mahama brand and needs to be appreciated for the work he did before the 2024 elections.

“I’ve worked hard for the past four years to ensure that John Dramani Mahama becomes the president. The late nights and my continuous appearance on TV to propagate his works are testaments to the fact that I need an elevation.

“I sacrificed my life for the project, and everyone is aware of the things I did to ensure that he is voted back to power. He can create a ministry for me to handle all prophets in the country. I have realized that some prophets are taking advantage of Ghanaians and are engaging in things that are not morally right.

“I need a ministry to handle these prophets. I am very serious about this plea to the president to hear my cry. An appointment into the government will make my soul very happy,” he stated on the Saturday, March 1, 2025 edition of United Showbiz.

‘My government will implement the Affirmative Action Act’ – President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama says his government will implement the Affirmative Action Act of 2024 (Act 1121) to ensure gender equity across all spheres of national life.

He said the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection was actively collaborating with relevant stakeholders to operationalise the Act, including attaining the 30 per cent target quota for women in political appointments.

President Mahama was delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) as a non-conservative President before Parliament on Thursday.

“I am pleased to report that women currently make up 23.21 per cent of all appointments, and we are diligently working toward reaching the target outlined in Act 1121,” he added.

President Mahama said he would engage all stakeholders, including development partners and civil society organisations, to prioritise gender equality, equity, and social justice.

“We will establish strong social protection mechanisms and enhance legal safeguards for women, girls, and other vulnerable groups,” he added.

The initiatives towards achieving that, he said, included enacting comprehensive laws and policies designed to dismantle harmful social norms, enhancing access to crucial resources and opportunities, particularly for young women and reduction of overall vulnerability within the society.

President Mahama commended the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his unwavering support and guidance, which were instrumental in passing the Affirmative Action Act, 2024 (Act 1121), during the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

“I am concerned about achieving gender balance, especially at the local government level. Very few women muster the courage to apply for the position of MMDCE.

“The few who do are edged out on very flimsy and parochial grounds. I hope that the National Constitution Review Conference will clear the pathway for the election of DCEs. The Gender Ministry will have the obligation to encourage and support more women to apply for these positions,” he said.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Dr. S.K. Nuamah, an energy expert, has called on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take responsibility for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) failure to secure victory in the 2024 elections.

According to him, if Akufo-Addo comes forward to accept blame and apologize, it will facilitate the party’s healing process and help re-energize its members for future electoral success.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on February 25, 2025, Dr. Nuamah stated, “By the time Bawumia took over, the party had already been destroyed, as Obiri Boahen once

said. At this point, we have grieved enough. It is time to put measures in place and move forward.”

“I will plead with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo if he truly loves the party, he should come out and accept full responsibility for everything that happened. He should apologize. Doing so will help the party heal faster,” he added.

The NPP lost the 2024 elections to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

After the party’s loss, several individuals have accused the former president of orchestrating the party’s defeat.

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, 2024, declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the election.

Mahama’s party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), achieved historic success by securing a significant majority in Parliament.

Andre Ayew scores as Le Havre stun Lens in a 7-goal thriller

Black Stars captain André Ayew delivered a standout performance, scoring and providing an assist, as Le Havre staged a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over Lens in a thrilling Ligue 1 encounter on Saturday evening.

Lens got off to a flying start, taking the lead in just the second minute through a Neil El Aynaoui penalty.

The visitors doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Ruben Aguilar found the bottom right corner with a left-footed strike from the centre of the box, courtesy of a well-placed cross from Deiver Machado.

Le Havre, however, refused to back down. Issa Soumaré ignited the comeback with a stunning long-range effort to halve the deficit.

Moments later, Soumaré turned provider, delivering a headed pass to André Ayew, who expertly guided his header into the bottom right corner to level the score at 2-2 in the 33rd minute.

Lens regained the lead early in the second half through Florian Sotoca, but Ayew once again played a pivotal role in Le Havre’s resurgence.

The Ghanaian international’s dangerous cross forced a poor clearance from Malang Sarr, allowing Josué Casimir to capitalise and equalise for the hosts.

The match reached its climax in stoppage time when Casimir won a penalty, which Ahmed Hassan calmly converted to seal a remarkable victory for Le Havre.

At 34 years old, Ayew continues to prove his worth, now boasting four goals this season. His experience, leadership, and decisive contributions could be crucial as Le Havre battles to secure their place in Ligue 1.

This thrilling victory not only showcased Ayew’s enduring quality but also highlighted the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

What’s next for Ayew?

The 34-year-old is tipped to return to the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar this month.

In a recent development, Mohammed Kudus is said to drop the number 10 jersey handed to him by Otto Addo in Andre Ayew’s absence.

UCC lecturer applauds Mahama’s SONA

0

A lecturer from the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Kasim Abdulai has lauded the government’s transformative initiatives aimed at eradicating hunger and ensuring food security nationwide.

This follows President John Mahama’s State of The Nation’s Address on Thursday.

“The government’s visionary approach as presented in the SONA 2025 is nothing short of revolutionary. By embracing strategies such as the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda, Feed Ghana Programme, Poultry Farm-to-Table Project, AgriNext Programme, Livestock Development Project, and the establishment of Farmer Service Centers, Ghana is boldly charting a new course toward sustainable food security and improved nutritional health,” Dr. Abdulai stated.

Dr. Abdulai underscored the urgent need for these initiatives by highlighting stark malnutrition data that continue to plague the nation.

“Data from the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey reveal that 17% of children under five are stunted, 11% are underweight, and 6% are wasted, highlighting a severe burden on young children.

He also noted that adolescents face a double burden of malnutrition, with boys being more prone to stunting and underweight, while girls are increasingly at risk of overweight and obesity, illustrating the coexistence of undernutrition and overnutrition that demands comprehensive intervention.”

In the SONA address, President Mahama outlined a blueprint designed to modernize the agricultural sector, boost local food production, and stabilize food prices. The lecturer emphasised that these measures are critical not only for reducing the nation’s reliance on costly food imports but also for creating sustainable livelihoods for local farmers.

“This strategic focus on modernizing agriculture and empowering our local producers is the key to ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to affordable, nutritious food. It represents a long-overdue investment in our nation’s health and economic resilience,” he added.

Highlighting the potential impact of these initiatives, Dr. Abdulai noted, “The Feed Ghana Programme and Poultry Farm-to-Table Project, for example, are set to drastically reduce our dependency on imported food products, which has long been a financial drain, currently costing over US$300 million annually. Instead, we are investing in our people and our future—ensuring that the fruits of our land directly nourish our communities.”

For him, this is a bold, multi-faceted strategy signaling a turning point in Ghana’s battle against hunger and malnutrition.

“Today, we celebrate a government that not only promises change but is actively delivering it. This is a call to all stakeholders in nutrition and public health to rally behind this ambitious agenda and help build a future free from hunger,” he concluded.

The economy we inherited is worse than the one we left in 2016 – Kwakye Ofosu fires back at Stephen Amoah

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The debate over Ghana’s economic state continues to intensify as Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has strongly refuted claims by Deputy Finance Minister Stephen Amoah that the current government inherited a better economy than the one left behind in 2016.

“If Stephen Amoah said the economy we inherited is better than the one we left in 2016, it is palpably untrue,” Kwakye Ofosu asserted during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile.

He emphasized that Ghana’s current economic challenges, particularly the hardships faced by bondholders, are clear indicators of a worsening situation.

“1.3 million people went through excruciating hardship because the money they were expecting from the government after buying bonds was not going to come.

They had to accept drastically reduced interest rates and extended maturities,” he explained.

According to him, economic indicators will show the stark difference when the Finance Minister presents the budget on March 11.

“There are about 18 of the indicators and in due course on 11th March, when the Finance Minister presents the budget, he will go into details about the specific indicators. And if you take out the growth rate, all the rest are worse than what they inherited.”

Kwakye Ofosu also dismissed assertions that the previous administration left behind a surplus in the primary balance. “It is not true that they left a positive primary balance. They left a target of 0.5%, which was supposed to be a surplus,” he stated.

36-Year-Old Man Poisoned By Friend Over Jackpot

0

What was meant to be a night of celebration ended in tragedy when a 36-year-old man, Kusi Ernest, allegedly fell victim to his own friend’s deadly jealousy in Bibianiha, a small community in the Bono Region.

According to reports, the two friends had placed their bets together, staking on the same set of lotto numbers. When the results came in, Kusi Ernest struck gold, winning a life-changing GH¢100,000, while his friend walked away with a comparatively modest GH¢1,800.

Rather than celebrate his own luck, the friend reportedly became resentful, blaming Kusi for not urging him to stake a higher amount. What followed next has left the entire community in shock.

As the two headed to a local bar to toast their winnings, the suspect allegedly seized the opportunity to slip poison into Kusi’s drink. Moments later, Kusi began to show signs of severe discomfort, and before anyone could grasp what was happening, he collapsed.

He was rushed to a nearby health facility, but doctors could not save him. His death, initially a mystery, took a dark turn when investigators pieced together testimonies from witnesses who overheard heated exchanges between the two friends earlier in the day.

The suspect has since been taken into police custody as investigations continue. Residents, stunned by the incident, say they are struggling to understand how a celebration between friends could take such a sinister turn.

The shocking case has also triggered conversations about the dangers of unchecked envy and greed, especially when money is involved. For many in Bibianiha, this tragedy serves as a painful reminder that even long-standing friendships can be poisoned sometimes, quite literally when money comes between them.

As the police dig deeper into the case, one question lingers: was it jealousy, betrayal, or something even darker that led to Kusi Ernest’s untimely death? Only time will tell.

German president criticises Trump’s conduct with Zelensky

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has fiercely criticized US President Donald Trump, describing the angry White House encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as beyond belief.

“Diplomacy fails when negotiating partners are humiliated in front of the world,” Steinmeier told dpa on Saturday during a flight to Uruguay.

“The scene at the White House yesterday took my breath away. I would never have believed that we would ever have to defend Ukraine from the United States,” Steinmeier said, eschewing his usual diplomatic subtleties.

Steinmeier said that Europeans remain committed to freedom, democracy and the rule of law. “We must prevent Ukraine from having to accept subjugation,” he said.

Trump on Friday accused Zelensky of recklessly endangering global security by refusing to negotiate a peace deal with Russia, warning that he was “gambling with World War Three” and the lives of millions.

He dismissed Ukraine’s position in the war started by Russia, arguing that Zelensky did not “have the cards” to dictate how Washington should engage with Moscow. He also described Zelensky as “disrespectful” and ungrateful.

Trump insisted that Russian President Vladimir Putin was willing to negotiate and issued an ultimatum to Zelensky: either Ukraine made a deal, or the US would withdraw its critical military support, leaving Ukraine to “fight it out” on its own.

Zelensky, visibly frustrated, countered that “there would be no compromises with a killer on our territory” and accused Trump of jeopardizing both Ukrainian and US security with his approach to Russia.

Steinmeier said Germany “urgently needs a strong government” in place to deal with the unfolding crisis. Germany held federal elections a week ago in which the mainstream conservative bloc came out on top, with Friedrich Merz likely the next chancellor. Preliminary talks to form a coalition with the Social Democrats have begun.

Vivian Narkuor: Ghana’s hockey star chasing global fame

0

Vivian Narkuor is living proof that talent, persistence and the right support can take an athlete from obscurity to continental stardom.

Fresh off a stunning campaign at the 2025 African Clubs Champions League (ACCC) in Ismailia, Egypt, where she netted 12 goals to claim both the Top Scorer and Most Valuable Player awards, the 28-year-old is basking in the well-earned limelight.

Her efforts not only powered the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Royal Ladies to a successful title defence with a 3-0 win over Egypt’s Smouha in the final but also cemented her status as one of Africa’s most prolific hockey forwards.

She stood beaming at the GRA headquarters in Accra with her teammates, fresh off the announcement that she and her teammates would receive GH¢10,000 each in recognition of their triumph.

It was clear that Vivian’s journey had reached another defining milestone.

Reluctant teen to national treasure

Unlike many elite athletes who grew up dreaming of their sport, Vivian initially had little interest in hockey.

As a young girl at Nkawkaw, Eastern Region, her heart leaned towards football, volleyball and handball. Hockey was merely an afterthought until her Physical Education teacher, known as Mr Sarfo, introduced her to the game at the Nkawkaw Senior High School.

Even then, she had to be persuaded to join the Eastern Regional team for the national schools’ tournament in Kumasi in 2014.

“I was selected for the Eastern Regional team for the national tournament in Kumasi but I didn’t want to go,” she recalls with a smile.

“They had to drive from Koforidua to Nkawkaw to search for me.

My mum convinced me and I reluctantly went to camp,” she told The Mirror, recounting her unusual journey into hockey.

What happened next was fate taking charge.

At that tournament, her performances caught the attention of Ebenezer Frimpong, the then Ghana national hockey captain and now Head of the GRA’s Sports Unit.

So impressed was he that he rewarded her with cash and a hockey stick, reassuring her that she was a rare talent worth nurturing.

It was not easy

Vivian still didn’t see a future in hockey beyond school and it took Frimpong over a year of persistent encouragement before she finally moved to Accra to train with the GRA Royal Ladies.

Living with Frimpong’s family, she honed her skills and prepared for what would become a remarkable journey in the sport.

Breakthrough and rise

That decision proved to be life-changing. Joining the GRA Royal Ladies in 2015, she quickly established herself as a key attacking force, helping the club rise to dominance in Ghana and Africa.

She helped the team win a bronze medal at the 2015 ACCC in Zambia before securing silver in 2016.

Then came her true breakthrough in 2017, when Accra hosted the tournament. Playing in front of an energetic home crowd, the GRA Royal Ladies triumphed over Kenya’s Telekom to win Ghana’s first-ever continental club hockey gold.

It was the beginning of a golden era, with the team winning four more continental club titles in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025—each victory etched in history by Vivian’s phenomenal goal-scoring exploits. She demonstrated her prowess by winning back-to-back MVP awards in 2002, 2003 and 2025.

At the national level, she has been a key player for the Black Sticks since 2017, representing Ghana in major international competitions including the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

She played a pivotal role in Ghana’s historic gold medal triumph at the 2023 African Games and came close to leading her country to Olympic qualification for Paris 2024, finishing second to South Africa in the qualifiers.

Despite her glittering hockey career, Vivian understands the importance of balancing sports with a professional career.

She currently works as a Field Operations Clerk at the Matban Shipping and Logistics in Accra, a role that presents challenges due to the demanding nature of her hockey commitments.

Yet, she remains relentless in her pursuit of excellence, both on and off the field.

She credits her senior teammates, particularly Adizatu Sulemana, for keeping her motivated.

Vivian is also passionate about inspiring young athletes, encouraging them to embrace sports as a gateway to greater opportunities.

“Sports can take you far; it builds character, communication skills, and confidence,” she often says. “You must always be willing to learn, train hard on your own, and have set goals beyond just playing for fun.”

Future aspirations

Despite her success, Vivian is candid about the struggles that Ghanaian hockey players face, particularly in terms of facilities, domestic competition structure and job security.

Unlike football, where professional contracts offer financial stability, hockey players often juggle full-time jobs with their sporting careers, making it difficult to compete at the highest level consistently.

Her biggest dream now is to play professionally abroad. Having conquered African club hockey, she is keen to test herself in more competitive leagues across Europe or Asia.

Vivian’s story is not just about goals and trophies but also about breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of Ghanaian athletes.

And with her unwavering ambition, there is no doubt she has plenty more history to write.

For now, Vivian is just getting started.

I Created Fake Prophecies and Miracles In Order to Trend and Become More Popular – Obinim Confesses as Church Members Cheer

0

Ghanaian ‘man of God’, Bishop Daniel Obinim, has revealed that he is a ‘fake pastor’ and created miracles in order to trend, get more attention and grow his church.

In a viral video taken from a sermon, the founder and leader of the Tema-based, International Godsway Ministries, said he concocted miracles as well as fake prophecies to gain attention to his church.

He said he knew that engaging in those antics will get him trending and therefore increase the visibility of his church. Via that means, Obinim was able to grow his church into one of the largest one-man churches in the country.

The controversial man of God has come under fire over the years due to his absurd, attention-grabbing antics which included lashing kids in his church, retrieving a passport from the spiritual realm, hard-to-believe miracles, and claiming to be a literal angel of God who can turn into animals at will.

Since establishing his fame and fortune, Obinim has been gradually renouncing his former claims and powers. He admitted lying about being able to turn into animals and has now also admitted many of his miracles and antics were faked.

His admissions stunned social media users who wondered why he still has church members after all this!

“People are still sitting there. hmmmm faith,” one user wrote.

NSA scandal:Culprits ran to countries where Ghana does not have extradition agreements -Kwakye Ofosu

0

According to GhanaWeb, the Minister of Government Communications and MP for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that several individuals implicated in the National Service Authority (NSA) ghost names scandal have fled to countries without extradition treaties with Ghana to avoid capture.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Saturday news analysis show, Kwakye Ofosu reassured the public that the government is actively pursuing legal measures to bring these individuals to justice.

He noted that these individuals deliberately chose to escape to nations where extradition is not possible, emphasizing the seriousness of their actions against the state.

“These culprits intentionally fled to these countries knowing that Ghana has no extradition agreements with them,” he stated.

His remarks followed President John Dramani Mahama’s recent directive to declare the suspects as wanted, initiate asset freezes, and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

During his first State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, President Mahama disclosed that more than 80,000 fraudulent names had been added to the NSA payroll, resulting in potential losses exceeding GH¢50 million each month.

In response to this scandal, the President has instructed the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment to create a Legislative Instrument (LI) to support the recently enacted National Service Authority Act 2024 (Act 1119).

Mahama stated that this new legal framework aims to improve governance within the National Service Scheme and prevent similar financial misconduct in the future.

Govt’s net borrowing stands at GHS7.1bn

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has addressed concerns about the government’s borrowing, emphasising that the net borrowing by the Mahama administration stands at GHS7.1 billion.

Dr Forson highlighted that this borrowing primarily serves as a buffer for servicing maturing debts accumulated by the previous NPP/Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.

“For the record, total T-Bill bids received by the Mahama government since January 10, 2025, stand at GHS89.7 billion,” Dr Forson stated in a recent X post.

He explained that out of this amount, GHS59.5 billion in T-Bill bids were accepted as rollovers of inherited debt, while GHS30.2 billion in T-Bill bids were rejected.

Dr Forson emphasised that the actual debt accumulation under the Mahama government is virtually zero, thanks to prudent public debt management measures. These measures have led to a significant drop in the 91-day T-Bill rate, from 28.34% to 20.79% in just 50 days, reflecting a strong vote of confidence in the Ghanaian economy by the investor community.

He urged the public to ignore the naysayers and focus on the positive impact of the government’s financial strategies.

Isco inspires Betis to comeback win over Real Madrid

0

Real Betis came from behind to beat Real Madrid with Isco scoring the winner against his former club.

The visitors, who sit second in La Liga, went ahead when Kylian Mbappe picked out Ferland Mendy, who squared for Brahim Diaz to slot into an empty net from close range.

Madrid had a couple of chances to double their lead before Johnny Cardoso equalised with a 34th-minute header from Isco’s corner.

Isco – captaining Betis against the club where he spent nine years – then netted a 54th-minute penalty after Antonio Rudiger had fouled Jesus Rodriguez in the box.

The hosts almost got a third when Cucho Hernandez shot wide after being picked out by Manchester United loanee Antony, who was available after his side won an appeal against his red card last week.

Betis, managed by ex-Madrid and Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, move up to sixth in the La Liga table and fully deserved their victory with 18 shots to Madrid’s nine.

It was the fourth time this season Carlo Ancelotti’s side have lost in La Liga and they remain behind Barcelona on goal difference.

Atletico Madrid could overtake them with a win against Athletic Bilbao later on Saturday (20:00 GMT).

Bongo Ideas Should Be Given Community Service Because He’s Broke, Even Selling His Entire Family Will Not Get You Ghc 170,000 – Twene Jonas

0

Ghanaian social media personality, Twene Jonas, has described as ‘nonsensical’ a recent judgement given against Twitter influencer, Albert Nat Hyde aka Bongo Ideas, for defamation.

The Accra High Court, in a case brought before it by another Twitter influencer known as Kojo Forex, suing Bongo Ideas for defamation of character, ordered that the loudmouthed social media nuisance pay Forex, a total of Ghc 170,000 in damages and other costs.

The breakdown of the judgement was Ghc 100,000 in general damages – although Forex had sought Ghc 1,000,000 – an additional Ghc 50,000 for aggravated and compensatory damages, and Ghc 20,000 to cover the legal costs incurred by Forex in the case.

Bongo has so far not shown any willingness or ability to pay back the money but has rendered an unqualified and public apology and retraction of his comments, which were also part of the judgement.

Reacting to the judgment, Jonas said it’s common knowledge that Bongo is broke and that even selling his entire family cannot raise the needed Ghc 170,000. He added that the better cause of action would have been for him to be sentenced to community service – either weeding or some other activity that would actually benefit society.

Ashantis are now not ashamed to have voted for NDC – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

0

The former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has opened up about voter apathy in the stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Ashanti Region, which contributed to the party’s inability to secure a significant number of votes from the region, thereby hindering their electoral chances.

Speaking on the findings following a probe into why the NPP lost the 2024 general elections on February 25, 2025, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu revealed how Ashanti electorates were not hesitant to admit that they voted for the NDC in the elections, despite being long-time supporters and associates of the NPP.

The experienced politician added that this development had never happened before, referencing the 2008 elections when the NPP lost to the NDC. He noted that, during that time, people in the Ashanti Region were afraid to even publicly admit that they had voted against the NPP.

“… In 2008, when the NPP lost the elections, nobody in Kumasi wanted to admit voting for the NDC when we went around asking about what could have caused our loss. This time around, our loss was massive and then you go to a place and people are not afraid to admit that they voted for the NDC and against the NPP,” he said.

The former Member of Parliament for Suame, however, acknowledged the current turn of events, noting that the electorate’s willingness to openly express their intent to vote the NPP back into power, provided the right actions are taken, reflects a positive development.

He regarded this as a demonstration of sincerity, emphasizing that it signifies the electorate’s ability and readiness to effectively engage, and work together with the party.

“They come to you and tell you why they voted against us even saying if we change our ways, they will vote for us to return to government. To me that is good news because people want to be sincere with you,” he added.
