Dr Nii Moi Thompson urges productivity revolution in Africa amid global trade shifts

The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and Special Advisor to the President on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr Nii Moi Thompson, has called for a productivity revolution in Africa to help the continent adapt to changing global trade dynamics.

Speaking at the second Hamburg Sustainability Conference (June 2–4, 2025), where he represented President John Dramani Mahama, Dr Thompson noted that recent trade policies, such as the US imposition of a 10% tariff on African imports, have created economic challenges similar to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the new US tariffs, African nations applied an average tariff of 6% on American goods, while the US charged only 0.4% on African exports.

With the new 10% US tariff, Dr Thompson warned that Africa risks losing ground in trade unless it boosts productivity.

“Africa already needed higher productivity to compete with cheap imports and in global markets. Now, with these tariffs, the need is even greater,” he said.

He added that improving labour productivity is key to narrowing income gaps between African workers and those in wealthier nations.

The Pan-African Productivity Association (PAPA), he said, will play a role in this effort.

The Hamburg Sustainability Conference gathered leaders to discuss sustainable development, with Africa’s economic resilience among the key topics.

Agyapong, who lost the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries to Bawumia in 2023, suggested that religion played a key role in the outcome of the internal elections—a claim Bawumia’s camp has flatly rejected.

Supreme Court quashes contempt conviction against Akwatia MP

0

By Joyce Danso

Accra, June 11, GNA – The Supreme Court has overturned a contempt conviction handed down by the Koforidua High Court against Mr. Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia.

In a 4-1 majority decision, the apex court also restrained the trial judge from sentencing the MP and nullified the bench warrant issued against him.

The five-member panel, presided over by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, indicated that the reasons for its ruling would be delivered on July 7, 2025.

Justice Pwamang dissented, while the majority decision was delivered by Justices Henry Kwofie, Professor Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Ernest Gaewu and Adjei Frimpong.

Mr. Kumi had filed an application for certiorari and an order of prohibition at the Supreme Court, seeking to quash the February 2025 contempt conviction by the Koforidua High Court.

The High Court had earlier issued a bench warrant against him, despite an outstanding injunction application against his swearing-in as MP.

The MP, through his lawyers, argued that the High Court judge acted with bias and violated the rules of natural justice by proceeding to hear the contempt application while a motion to set it aside was pending.

He sought the Supreme Court’s intervention to nullify the High Court’s ruling and halt enforcement of the bench warrant.

Ernest Kumi free to serve as MP

0

Kwame Owiredu, Lawyer for Ernest Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia has expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling, describing it as a vindication of their client’s rights.

On Wednesday, June 11, the apex court quashed a ruling by the High Court in Koforidua, which had held Kumi in contempt and was set to sentence him. The Supreme Court also barred Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe from proceeding with sentencing.

The ruling follows a judicial review application filed by Mr. Kumi, led by his legal counsel Gary Nimako-Marfo, who also serves as the NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs. The legal team argued that the High Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the election petition that resulted in an injunction against the MP and the subsequent contempt proceedings.

Speaking to the media after the ruling, Kwame Owiredu said, “As we speak now, Hon. Ernest Kumi remains the elected and valid MP for Akwatia. Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi is as free as a bird. He’s a free man, and he will continue his good works as an MP for the good people of Akwatia.”

Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, lawyer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in Akwatia, maintained that the ongoing election petition at the High Court remains unaffected.

“The petition stands. The matter would be on unabted, it’s a valid petition, and we will pursue it. We await the analysis the Supreme Court will make, and we take it from there,” he said.

In this case, while the petition was filed on December 31, 2024, Nimako-Marfo said the results were not gazetted until June 6, 2025—well beyond the statutory timeframe.

He argued that because the court’s jurisdiction was improperly invoked, all subsequent rulings, including the injunction and contempt conviction, were invalid.

He also criticised the High Court for convicting Mr. Kumi of contempt without granting him a hearing, calling it a breach of natural justice.

However, counsel for the NDC parliamentary candidate, Henry Boakye Yiadom, opposed the claims, insisting the High Court acted within its legal mandate and that both the injunction and the contempt ruling were valid.

Mahama alone can reset Ghana

0

Renowned economist Kwame Pianim has commended President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as exceptional and responsive leadership, declaring the President as the only Ghanaian capable of “resetting Ghana” in these challenging times.

Pianim made the remarks during a courtesy call by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on President Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, June 11.

He highlighted the President’s willingness to listen and act on the concerns of teachers, stressing that such responsiveness sets him apart.

“Here we tend to underpay our teachers but with you as a listening president, I was happy when they were coming; they said let’s go and talk to the president — I said with this president if he tells you he is going to do something, he will do it,” Pianim stated.

Drawing a contrast, he recalled a broken promise by another leader who pledged to deliver 10,000 housing units to teachers—a commitment that, according to him, yielded nothing.

“Someone told them he was going to give them 10,000 houses, they got zero. I told them this is a listening president,” he added.

Pianim called on all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation, to unite behind President Mahama’s leadership.

“Of the 35, 36 million Ghanaians alive, you are the only one who can reset Ghana for us. I have been talking to the other people on the other side; when I put on my political hat, all of us have to make democracy work and support you because if you fail us — this is a historic opportunity for Ghana to get on the right path.”

He further urged President Mahama to rise above partisan considerations and focus on national interest.

“You are the right person, you don’t need the voters, you don’t need the party, do the best for Ghana and leave a legacy,” Pianim said.

Tottenham Snatch Thomas Frank From Brentford For £10m

0

Thomas Frank

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to appoint Thomas Frank as their new head coach, with a compensation fee of around £10 million set to be paid to Brentford.

Spurs are expected to formally announce the Danish manager’s arrival in the coming days.

Frank will replace Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed last week despite guiding the club to a historic Europa League triumph. Spurs’ domestic form collapsed during the 2024/25 season, culminating in a 17th-place Premier League finish and 22 defeats in 38 matches.

Postecoglou’s exit was widely expected, with reports emerging even before the European final that the Australian would leave regardless of the result. Injuries were a factor in Spurs’ poor league campaign, but performances failed to convince.

Tottenham had also considered Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva for the vacancy, but Frank quickly emerged as the preferred candidate. Talks progressed swiftly once Spurs committed to activating his release clause.

Frank, 51, has been Brentford’s manager since 2018 and has steadily built his reputation as one of the league’s most adaptable tacticians. He is currently the second-longest serving manager in the Premier League behind Pep Guardiola.

Though he has no professional playing background, Frank’s coaching record is impressive. He has overseen 152 Premier League games, collecting 200 points with a win rate of 35%. Brentford finished the season in 10th place, 18 points clear of Spurs, scoring more and conceding fewer goals.

Frank becomes Tottenham’s fourth permanent manager since 2021. The pressure will be immediate, but he inherits a squad that, despite their league standing, recently ended a 17-year wait for silverware.

BOMB – NPP bigwigs ‘fingered’ for allegedly siphoning millions from Exim Bank

0

The information gathered suggests some politically connected individuals to the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration have been exposed for allegedly siphoning millions from Exim Bank loans.

According to the report, the siphoning scheme happened under then-CEO, Lawrence Agyinsam under the guise of promoting agriculture.

The shocking revelation suggests Exim Bank which was meant to support Ghana’s export-driven businesses was a cash cow for these individuals within the former Akufo-Addo government.

KMA impounds 22 vehicles, fines drivers for charging unapproved fares

0

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is taking firm action against commercial drivers who go against its directive to charge unapproved transport fares.

In a special exercise conducted by the assembly’s Transport Task Force, 22 drivers were arrested for overcharging passengers, and their vehicles were impounded at the KMA premises, pending further legal action.

Head of Urban Transport at KMA, Randy Wilson, indicated the offenders will be fined between GH¢500 and GH¢1,500 before their vehicles are released, in line with the Assembly’s Special Exercise Fine approved on July 28, 2023.

The task force comprised personnel from the Department of Transport, KMA Metro Guards, Assembly Members, and other security operatives.

According to the assembly, the team acted upon evidence that these drivers were flouting the 15% reduction in transport fares, which took effect on May 24, 2025, as directed by national transport unions.

On May 26, 2025, the assembly issued a public notice cautioning all commercial drivers to strictly comply with the revised fares.

The notice warned drivers against charging unapproved fares, as the assembly noted it is a criminal offense punishable by law.

Mr. Wilson reaffirmed KMA’s commitment to maintaining discipline and fairness within the city’s transport system.

He emphasized that the Assembly will continue to enforce its regulations without fear or favor to protect the interests of the commuting public.

“KMA remains committed to promoting order, accountability, and sanity on Kumasi’s roads,” Mr. Wilson noted.

‘I will go for Grammy, BET awards soon’ – Empress Gifty claps back at Agradaa

Gospel musician, Empress Gifty Gospel musician, Empress Gifty

It appears the ongoing feud between gospel musician Empress Gifty and Nana Agradaa shows no signs of ending.

For weeks, the two have been engaged in a heated dispute, which escalated after Empress Gifty filed a GH¢20 million defamation lawsuit against Agradaa for spewing derogatory comments about her and her husband.

In the wake of the lawsuit, Agradaa took to social media to criticise Empress Gifty, stating that even a Rolex watch is more valuable than her TGMAs plaque.

In response, Empress Gifty posted a video expressing her ambitions to win Grammy and BET awards.

She also mentioned that she would appeal to the spirit of her late mother, Agaga, for protection.

“I will visit Agaga and I will present the plaques to her so that she can also protect me from any evil plot against me. I won this award by merit.

“Very soon I will go to BET and Grammys,” she said.

Meanwhile, both parties appeared before the Tema High Court for the second time on June 11, 2025, as the case continues.

Adu-Boahene failed to declare his assets – Deputy AG tells court

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem Sai, has reportedly said that embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, who is currently being prosecuted for alleged misappropriation of state funds, did not declare his assets.

Dr Srem Sai, according to GHOne TV, made this disclosure during court proceedings on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

He reportedly told the court that the former NSB boss did not declare his assets as required by law.

Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana mandates public officeholders to complete and submit Assets Declaration forms to the Auditor-General’s office upon resumption of office.

“(1) A person who holds a public office mentioned in clause (5) of this article shall submit to the Auditor-General a written declaration of all property or assets owned by, or liabilities owed by, him whether directly or indirectly – (a) within three months after the coming into force of this Constitution or before taking office, as the case may be, (b) at the end of every four years; and (c) at the end of his term of office.

“(2) Failure to declare or knowingly making false declaration shall be a contravention of this Constitution and shall be dealt with in accordance with Article 287 of this Constitution,” part of the article reads.

Section 3 of the article further states, “The declaration made under clause (1) of this article shall, on demand, be produced in evidence – (a) before a court of competent jurisdiction; or (b) before a commission of inquiry appointed under Article 278 of this Constitution; or (c) before an investigator appointed by the Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice.”

Article 287 mandates the Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to take actions it deems appropriate against public officers who fail to declare their assets.

Meanwhile, investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Attorney General’s office have uncovered a number of properties allegedly acquired with embezzled state funds by Adu-Boahene and his wife.

Below is a breakdown of the properties and their estimated values under the couple’s names:

No. 2 Stream Part Drive, Mayfair Estates, La, Accra – estimated at $1,000,000 (valued at GH¢15,000,000);

Mikel Obi questions Chelsea for snubbing Victor Osimhen to sign Liam Delap

Mikel Obi (R) wants Osimhen (L) to move to Chelsea Mikel Obi (R) wants Osimhen (L) to move to Chelsea

Former Nigerian midfielder Mikel Obi has chastised Chelsea Football Club for their lack of seriousness in signing his compatriot Victor Osimhen, instead opting to sign Liam Delap.

According to him, Delap is a good striker who proved his worth at Ipswich Town during the 2024/25 season, but his ability to thrive in a top club cannot be guaranteed.

“I just hope that it’s going to be the right decision. I like Liam Delap. He’s a good young striker who works his socks off. Is he a proven goalscorer in the Premier League? Can he do it at a big club like Chelsea? That’s the question. It’s about how the manager works with him and develops him,” he questioned, as reported by the Standard.

The former Chelsea midfielder asserted that Galatasaray striker Osimhen would be a better player to solve the club’s goal-scoring crisis.

Obi stated that Osimhen is a proven striker who can score numerous goals for the Blues to win titles in a season, as compared to an upcoming player.

“With Victor Osimhen, if you want the finished article, if you want someone who can come in straight away, get you goals, win you trophies, put you in the top four, you have to pay the big bucks. That’s what the big clubs do.

“If you want somebody to evolve over the next two, three, four years, which is what the club has done, then that also makes sense. But Chelsea Football Club’s culture is winning, straight away. If you want to win, you have to bring in a Victor Osimhen,” he said.

Chelsea signed the 22-year-old for 30 million euros from Ipswich on a six-year deal.

Chelsea’s move for Osimhen is reported to have stalled following the player’s high wage demands.

0

Oklahoma City Thunder leveled the NBA Finals series at 1-1 with a commanding 123-107 victory over the Indiana Pacers in game two on Sunday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the standout performer, pouring in 34 points to spearhead the Thunder’s dominant performance at the Paycom Center.

The Pacers had stunned the Thunder with a last-second win in game one on Friday, but Oklahoma City bounced back emphatically, controlling the game from start to finish. Gilgeous-Alexander’s opening basket marked a personal milestone, pushing his season total to 3,000 points — making him only the 12th player in NBA history to achieve this feat.

The series now heads back to Indiana for game three at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Thursday at 01:30 BST. It will be a historic occasion, as it marks the first time Indianapolis has hosted an NBA Finals game in 25 years.

Reflecting on the win, Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, said, “They play a full 48 minutes and you can’t just throw the first punch. You’ve got to try to throw all the punches all night. That’s what we did. We threw enough punches tonight to get a ‘W.’” Alongside his 34 points, he also contributed five rebounds and eight assists.

Supporting the star’s effort, Jalen Williams added 19 points, Aaron Wiggins scored 18, and Chet Holmgren bounced back from a quiet game one to post 15 points and six rebounds.

With the series now tied, fans can look forward to an intense showdown as the Finals continue in Indianapolis.

Ken Agyapong can’t lead party he disrespects – Bawumia’s camp fires back

0

Supporters of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia have hit back hard at Kennedy Agyapong, accusing him of peddling falsehoods and insulting the very people he hopes to lead.

In a fiery response to Agyapong’s weekend speech in Mampong, the Bawumia camp said the former presidential aspirant’s remarks were riddled with contradictions, disrespect, and dangerous rhetoric.

“Ken Agyapong has described NPP members as fools. He’s questioned why poor people in the party should speak. And now, he wants to be leader of the same people he insults? How does that make sense?” the group fired.

Agyapong, in his Mampong address, suggested that the NPP’s 2024 electoral loss was due to the choice of a Muslim, Bawumia, as flagbearer. But the Bawumia group dismissed the claim as not only bigoted but factually groundless.

“Was it because of religion that over 50 Christian NPP parliamentary candidates—some of them pastors—also lost their seats? Was it religion that led to Kufuor’s loss in 1996, or Akufo-Addo’s defeats in 2008 and 2012? The claim is absurd.”

They also pointed out that Bawumia convincingly won both the Super Delegates Conference and the main NPP primary, defeating multiple Christian contenders including Agyapong himself.

“If the party didn’t want a Muslim leader, how did Bawumia beat nine Christian aspirants in the first round, and five in the final primary? Or are NPP delegates suddenly all Muslims?”

The Bawumia camp dismissed Agyapong’s version of history as misleading, rejecting his claim that Kufuor earned a second shot at the flagbearership because of a limited campaign window in 1996.

“This is false. Kufuor was elected flagbearer in April 1996, giving him eight months to campaign. If short campaigns earned second chances, then Adu Boahen—who had just two months to campaign in 1992—would have been re-elected.”

The Bawumia camp also accused Agyapong of contradicting himself, arguing “First, he says we lost because Bawumia is Muslim. Then he says we lost because Akufo-Addo didn’t appoint enough party faithful. Which is it? Ken must decide what story he wants to tell.”

They questioned Agyapong’s call for party unity insisting unity cannot be built on lies and insults.

“You can’t call people fools, silence the poor, and then turn around to preach unity. If this is who Ken Agyapong really is, then Mampong exposed more than just a speech—it revealed a troubling mindset.”

Notable politicians who have reacted to the ongoing strike by nurses

0

These are the faces of some of the notable politicians who have commented on the strike These are the faces of some of the notable politicians who have commented on the strike

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is currently on strike over the government’s failure to implement their 2024 Collective Agreement, which they argue has left their demands unmet.

The association states that the prolonged delay in fulfilling their agreed terms forced them to take industrial action.

Despite an Accra High Court ruling ordering them to return to work, they remain firm in their stance, insisting they will only resume duty once their concerns are fully addressed.

Their strike has sparked reactions from various political figures, particularly members of the opposition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who have weighed in on the ongoing dispute.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi and former Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has shared his thoughts on the ongoing nurses’ strike.

During an interview with Accra-based United Television on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, he criticised the government for failing to factor nurses into the national budget, especially given the growing concerns about their working conditions.

He questioned the government’s foresight, stating, “When you were preparing the 2025 Budget, what contingency was included? You were aware that discussions around nurses and midwives were intensifying, so, why didn’t you consider them in the budget planning? Given their struggles, proper budgeting could have ensured funds were available to support them in case of future misunderstandings.”

Gloria Owusu

Trobu Member of Parliament, Gloria Owusu, has added her voice to the ongoing nurses’ strike, expressing deep concern over its impact on Ghanaians.

In a lengthy post on X, she highlighted how the strike is causing suffering and even loss of lives due to the disruption in healthcare services.

According to her, the Minority in Parliament attempted to bring the issue up for discussion, but the First Deputy Speaker blocked the motion and went as far as ordering the Ranking Member out of the chamber.

“Our hospitals are in crisis. Nurses and midwives are on strike. Ghanaians are suffering and dying due to the lack of care, especially women and children.

“Today, the Minority, through our Ranking Member on Health, attempted to raise this urgent issue on the floor of Parliament. Shockingly, the First Deputy Speaker refused to allow it and even ordered the Ranking Member out of the chamber,” she claimed.

Dr Nana Ayew Afriye

Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, has also called on nurses to return to work, emphasising the urgent need for healthcare services as hospitals remain empty and lives are at risk.

Expressing concern over the ongoing strike, he pleaded with nurses to prioritise the well-being of Ghanaians and resume their duties to prevent further loss of life.

“We are not here to justify the strike for them. We are here to plead with the nurses to understand that even if the government doesn’t see the need to engage them, they should go with a good faith with Ghanaians at heart because getting all the money without the lives that we have lost brings no joy to anyone,” Dr Afriye stated.

Alexander Akwasi Acquah

Former Deputy Minister of Health and Member of the Health Committee in Parliament, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has urged the government to take responsibility for properly communicating with the striking nurses.

He emphasised that if immediate action cannot be taken to meet their demands, authorities should at least establish a clear roadmap outlining steps toward resolving their concerns.

“The government should explain the situation to the nurses, and if immediate implementation is not possible, a roadmap should be established,” Starr FM quoted him as saying.

Henry Kwabena Kokofu

Former Environmental Protection Agency boss, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has criticised President John Mahama for excluding nurses and midwives from his priorities within the first 120 days of his administration.

In an interview with United Television, Kokofu pointed out that while the president claimed to have fulfilled all promises outlined in his 120-day social contract, he failed to address the concerns of healthcare workers.

According to Kokofu, this omission suggests that nurses and midwives are not considered a priority under the current government.

“Within his first 120 days in office, President John Mahama stated that he had fulfilled his promises. However, nurses and midwives have realised that they were not prioritised, as their concerns were not included in his 120-day social contract,” Kokofu claimed.

President Mahama reconnects with billionaire Dr Mike Adenuga

President Mahama recently met with Nigerian billionaire, Dr Adenuga President Mahama recently met with Nigerian billionaire, Dr Adenuga

President John Dramani Mahama has rekindled ties with Nigerian billionaire and founder of Globacom, Dr Mike Adenuga, describing him as a “West African icon” in the telecommunications and oil and gas sectors.

The meeting, which took place over the weekend, marks a moment of reflection on the historical ties between Ghana and Glo, one of Africa’s pioneering indigenous telecom companies.

Glo Mobile Ghana, a subsidiary of Globacom Limited, entered the Ghanaian market in 2012 with high expectations, positioning itself as the sixth telecom operator in the country.

It became known for its aggressive pricing, “Glo with Pride” branding, and data-focused offerings that shook up the local telecom space.

Though Glo Ghana faced regulatory, competitive, and operational challenges, ultimately leading to its exit from the Ghanaian market, its brief stint was seen as a bold attempt to increase competition and drive down consumer costs in the telecom sector.

President Mahama, who was then Vice President and later President during Glo’s active years in Ghana, has long championed greater regional business integration and private sector-led growth.

In a social media post on June 10, 2025, following the meeting, President Mahama praised Dr Adenuga’s contributions to the economic and digital transformation of West Africa.

“It was great reconnecting this weekend with Mike Adenuga, a West African icon in telecommunications and oil and gas,” President Mahama wrote.

Also in attendance at the meeting was Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George.

Dr Mike Adenuga, one of Africa’s richest men, is widely respected for building a continental telecommunications empire with operations in Nigeria, Ghana (formerly), and Benin, as well as significant interests in the oil industry through his company Conoil.

BBC slammed for making ‘racist and disrespectful’ post about Senegal after they defeated England

BBC Sport have faced backlash for discrediting Senegal BBC Sport have faced backlash for discrediting Senegal

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has faced backlash on social media for using a headline that tends to undermine Senegal and African teams after they defeated England in an international friendly.

Senegal thrashed The Three Lions 3-1 in a friendly game in England on June 10, 2025, in an enthralling encounter.

Harry Kane broke the deadlock in the 11th minute as they pressed for the opener from the start of the game.

However, Senegal came back into the match with goals from Ismaila Sarr, Cheikh Sabaly, and Habib Diarra, giving them a convincing 3-1 win and making history as the first African side to defeat England.

In the post-match report, the BBC shared a post of the match scoreline on their X page with the caption “England have been beaten by an African side for the first time EVER.”

In response, some football fans described the post as racist, arguing it seeks to underestimate the potency of African football and devalue it to the global audience.

Others were peeved that the BBC journalist failed to mention the team but rather referred to it as ‘an African side’, adding that it’s a disrespect to the country and the continent.

Amy Newman Says Marriage at 18 Was God’s Way of Delivering Her from Childhood Abuse

0

Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician, Amy Newman, has opened up about her early marriage and how it played a crucial role in rescuing her from a painful childhood.

Speaking at the maiden edition of MzGee’s “A Convergence of Mothers”, the renowned singer behind “Okamafo Jesus” revealed that she got married at the age of 18 — a turning point she described as a divine intervention.

According to her, life as a child was filled with hardship and abuse. She explained that her father had many children with different women and later sent them to live with various relatives. Unfortunately, Amy ended up with some particularly harsh family members. “They treated me badly,” she said, hinting that they may have seen something special in her — “a shining star” — and tried to dim it.

Recounting how she met her husband, Rev. Kwesi Newman, she said it all began when a cousin from Kumasi visited Takoradi and told her about a dance event happening in town. She joined in, not knowing that the man who would later become her husband was in the crowd. Captivated by her performance, Rev. Newman found his way to her house the very next day to ask for her hand in marriage.

“He told me God spoke to him while I was dancing and said, ‘That’s your wife,’” she shared, calling it the day “God visited” her. The two got married soon after, and she began having children at age 20.

Amy Newman noted that their marriage has now spanned over 40 years and is blessed with eight children. However, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. She recalled how people tried to defame her, calling her a “sexy dancer” in an attempt to tarnish her image.

Despite it all, Amy Newman continues to inspire many with her story of resilience, faith, and how love came at a time she needed it most.

Adu Boahene failed to declare assets – Prosecutors in 49m cyber security funds case

0

Former National Signals Bureau Director-General, Kwabena Adu Boahene, who is the first accused in the criminal case involving the alleged theft and laundering of over GHS 49 million in state funds, according to the state prosecutor, did not declare his assets as required by law.

This was revealed during a case management conference on Monday, June 9.

The case involves four accused persons: Adu-Boahen, the former boss of Ghana’s National Signals Bureau; his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng; an associate, Mildred Donkor; and Advantage Solutions, a company jointly owned by Adu-Boahen and his wife. They are facing multiple charges, including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. The funds in question were allocated for the purchase of cybersecurity equipment.

During the case management conference, prosecutors outlined a broad range of documentary evidence they intend to rely on at trial. According to the state represented by Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, investigations have uncovered a complex network of companies and bank accounts through which the accused allegedly moved state funds for personal benefit.

One of the revelations was the prosecution’s confirmation that Adu-Boahen failed to submit an asset declaration despite being a public Officer. Dr. Justice Srem-Sai says the state requested access to his asset declaration form but was informed that none had been filed.

Among the evidence disclosed are:

1. Corporate records (Index G) linking Advantage Solutions to a private company, BNC, through which money was allegedly channelled. Adu-Boahen is identified as the beneficial owner.

2. Bank statements (Index J) from two companies, which investigators say will show that the only significant source of income for the companies was the public money in question.

3. Caution statements (Indexes K, L, and M) from all three individual accused persons during the police investigation.

4. Real estate documents confirming the purchase of five luxury properties in Mayfair Estate, believed to have been acquired using state funds (Index Q), along with accompanying photographs (Index P).

5. Freezing orders (Index N) on assets the state believes are linked to the alleged crime.

Another document disclosed is a financial flow chart referred to in court as Chart One that details how the missing funds were transferred from the government’s accounts into various private companies and then used to acquire real estate, vehicles, and other assets.

The chart includes dates of transactions, the identities of recipients, and amounts involved. Prosecutors say it paints a comprehensive picture of how the money was allegedly misappropriated and laundered.

Enterprise Dreams Limited, one of the companies implicated, is said to have been used to rent vehicles, some of which, according to prosecutors, are believed to have been stolen from Canada and the United States. These vehicles will form part of the evidence at trial.

In all, 85 documents were filed with the court on June 2, 2025. The prosecution has asked the court for permission to supplement this with additional disclosures on the letter requesting information on Adu-Boahen’s asset declaration. The court granted this request and allowed defence counsel extra time to file any processes requesting further disclosures if needed.

The case has been adjourned for a further case management conference is scheduled for June 26, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

‘Let’s be measured even in disagreements’ – Afenyo-Markin to MPs

0

Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has called for tolerance and measured discourses in Ghana’s political landscape, emphasising the need for mutual respect despite ideological differences.

Delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, he acknowledged that disagreements are an inherent part of politics.

He urged Members of Parliament to adopt a more respectful tone when engaging with one another.

“We may disagree, but that is the beauty of politics. We cannot always agree. Let’s disagree but be measured in the language we use even where we disagree,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu also reflected on the imperfections of leadership, stating that no one, including him, is above mistakes.

He explained that the real test lies in one’s commitment to the national interest, irrespective of political affiliation.

“Mr Speaker, we are never perfect, we make mistakes. I make mistakes, but we should be committed to the national interest and know that today we may be to your left, tomorrow we may be to your right,” he noted.

Afenyo-Markin then pointed out the unique experiences of the country’s two dominant political parties under the Fourth Republic, noting that both have occupied the corridors of power and experienced life in opposition.

“Fortunately, the two political parties that have taken the stage in this fourth republican constitution have all tasted power and have tasted opposition. So, I think we must better understand this whole concept of patience and tolerance,” he added.

His calls for restraint come in the wake of chaos that erupted in Parliament on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

The House was briefly adjourned following a heated argument between the Minority and the Speaker’s chair over the refusal to allow a statement on the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Tensions escalated when parliamentary marshals nearly removed the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, from the Chamber.

Dr Afriye, visibly agitated, had risen to demand that Parliament address the nationwide strike, which has severely impacted healthcare delivery in the country.

Otumfuo, Mahama, Nana Say Bye To Mamponghene

0

THE THREE days set aside for the funeral rites (Dote Yie) of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the late Asante Mamponghene, which commenced last Saturday, successfully came to an end on Monday.

The last day of the solemn programme attracted scores of dignitaries from all corners of the country and beyond to Mampong.

Prominent among those who made their way to Mampong included the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President John Dramani Mahama.

Former Presidents Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor, among other dignitaries, were also present to bid farewell to the deceased traditional ruler.

Last Respects

The dignitaries, one after the other, filed past the mortal remains of the late chief to pay their last respects to him, and also wish him a peaceful transition from the land of the living.

The Asantehene, who is the leader of Asanteman, also bade farewell to the late chief, amid the performance of some sacrifices, which was done in camera.

The arrival of the Asantehene to the funeral grounds was the epitome of the event. All mourners present were on their feet to welcome Otumfuo, who was visibly sad.

The Asante King was carried in a palanquin and surrounded by a huge number of servants and elders. The king’s delegation were heard singing war songs, to display that Asanteman was mourning.

Tears Flow

Being the last day of the funeral rites, Monday’s event was mainly characterised by the shedding of uncontrollable tears by the mourners, who were visibly sad to finally part ways with Daasebre.

Most of the mourners, especially the Asante Mampong natives and the bereaved family, were seen cursing their stars over the painful loss of the Asante Mamponghene, who reigned for close to three decades.

According to them, the sudden death of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II has created a huge vacuum which would be extremely difficult to fill, hence their shedding of uncontrollable tears.

Rich Asante Culture

Also, the firing of musketry by the traditional guards, which has been persistent from the beginning of the funeral rites, was intensified on Monday, being the last day.

The day was also used to showcase the rich traditions and culture of Asanteman, which dates to over four centuries. This was to show that Asanteman has indeed lost a key figure.

Shops Closed

Significantly, all business activities in Asante Mampong virtually came to standstill on Monday, as all shops in the boisterous town were closed as a sign of respect to Daasebre.

The planning committee of the funeral rites ordered for all shops in Mampong, with the exception of food joints and few others, to close during the event.

Night Burial

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was buried at the royal mausoleum at Mampong late Monday night in the presence of some selected groups and people.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, being the occupant of the Silver Stool, was the second in command of the Asante Kingdom after Otumfuo, who sits on the Golden Stool.

The late chief, who was 86 years old, is highly admired in Asanteman and Ghana in general for his invaluable contributions to the transformation of the country, especially the chieftaincy institution.

Metro Mass Transit retooling progressing-Acting MD

0

By Benjamin Akoto

Sunyani, (Bono), June 11, GNA – Mr Cesar Kale, the Acting Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) says efforts are progressing for the retooling of the state-owned transport company.

As a key player in the nation’s transport sector, he said the retooling of the company was in line with broader plans to well reposition the MMTL to execute its mandate effectively and to achieve its vision for the nation.

In an interview with the media Sunyani as part of his visit to the Bono Region, Mr Kale said: “we are considering building modern infrastructure, including parking lots, mini malls, retail stores, restaurants, and even clinics to improve our operations and customer experience”.

He indicated that the new management remained committed to transforming the national headquarters in Accra, and the various branches of the company for effective operations.

Mr Kale explained that his visit was to enable him and the leadership of the company to assess the condition of vehicles and terminals, disclosing that the company expected to take delivery of 90 to 100 electric buses by the end of the year.

That will well position the MMTL to support and contribute significantly to the government’s 24-hour economy agenda, assuring that every region will receive its share of the buses.

Mr Kale said the company was also strategically preparing to expand its fleet and begin operations on inactive routes and further re-strengthen intra-city operations.

“It’s also crucial to develop and reopen some of our terminals in line with the retooling, ” he stated, saying the management was worried about the closure and poor condition of some of the bus terminals.

Mr Kale added that the management was working hard to transform and facelift the MMTL bus terminals pointing out that the management was developing clear implementation strategies to “bring MMTL back to full operational strength with the right tools and facilities”.

Mr Nii Ashitey Attram, the Sunyani Branch Manager said the branch had 36 buses and only 15 were operational now, adding that one of the buses had a minor fault, six major faults, and 14 of them earmarked for scrapping.

He said the branch had 117 staff and generated an average monthly revenue of GH¢1,337,764.70, saying currently it operated five main routes of Sunyani-Hamile, Sampa-Kumasi, Sunyani-Derma, Dormaa-Kumasi, and Sunyani-Kumasi.

Mr Attram said plans were underway to revive three suspended routes of Akrodie-Kumasi, Techiman-Wa-Hamile, and Techiman-Bolgatanga-Tamale, and called for adequate police escort.

The Acting Managing Director, who was accompanied by some management members, earlier met and interacted with the staff of the Sunyani branch.

Ghana’s economy expands 5.3% in first quarter of 2025

0

Ghana’s economy grew by 5.3 per cent in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, up from 4.9 per cent in the same period of 2024, driven by the services sector and recovery of the agriculture sector.

The agriculture sector grew by 6.6 per cent, compared to 2.4 per cent in Q1 of 2024, where fishing saw the biggest jump in agriculture, growing by 16.4 per cent.

Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, Government Statistician, at a media briefing said industry grew by 3.4 per cent in Q1 of 2025, compared to 6.7 per cent in Q1 of 2024.

He said the oil and gas sector declined sharply by 22.1 per cent, dragging the industrial sector down but the manufacturing sector was strong, growing by 6.6 per cent, showing that local production was holding up.

He said services including trade, transport, ICT, banking, and health constituted 46.8 per cent of the economy.

“The services sector grew by 5.9 per cent, with ICT leading the way at 13.1 per cent growth,” he added.

The Government Statistician said, “if we remove the oil & gas sector, the rest of the economy grew by 6.8 per cent and

this shows that Ghana’s economy is becoming more balanced, relying less on oil.”

Dr Iddrisu said seasonally adjusted, Ghana’s provisional real GDP increased by 1.4 per cent in Q1 of 2025 from 0.9 per cent in Q4 of 2024; this was 0.5 percentage points higher than what was recorded in Q4 of 2024.

He said Crops, Information and Communication, Manufacturing, Trade, Repair of Vehicles, Household Goods, Transport and Storage and Finance & Insurance were the main drivers of GDP growth in Q1 of 2025, all together contributing 84.5 per cent of the 5.3 per cent growth.

He said with agriculture growing at 6.6 per cent and the strong momentum in crops and fishing, households could benefit from government’s input subsidies and training under the Agriculture for Transformation Programme to support food security and income.

He said households could also benefit from the resulting declining inflation, adding that the services grew by 5.9 per cent, particularly in ICT (13.1 per cent), trade (7.1 per cent), and transport (8.6 per cent).

Dr Iddrisu said households should explore night-shift opportunities under the 24-Hour Economy initiative in the expanding service economy.

He said with transport, ICT, and trade services expanding, businesses in logistics, delivery, customer service, and manufacturing should adjust working models to 24-hour cycles where feasible.

He said manufacturing grew by 6.6 per cent despite oil sector decline and SMEs should leverage infrastructure, including roads, irrigation, and storage facilities to source local inputs and access markets under the AfCFTA and the Big Push Programme.

On recommendation for the government, he said mining & quarrying grew modestly by 1.4 per cent, but oil & gas declined sharply by 22.1 per cent, adding that scaling up Gold Board activities could stabilise earnings and broaden impact beyond extraction.

Dr Iddrisu said accelerating the Big Push investments in power, roads, and digital infrastructure could support private sector expansion and enhance regional competitiveness, thereby unlocking industrial growth beyond the 3.4 per cent growth.

Netizens flare up as video of Tyler Perry’s ‘Straw’ airing on local TV station emerges

'Straw' featuring Taraji P Henson was aired on some local TV stations ‘Straw’ featuring Taraji P Henson was aired on some local TV stations

Some Ghanaians on social media have expressed shock after a viral video showed a local Ghanaian TV station airing a recently released movie by Tyler Perry.

The movie Straw, starring Taraji P. Henson, was released on the popular video streaming service Netflix on June 6, 2025, to widely positive reviews and social media discourse.

However, barely days after its release, videos shared on Facebook showed some Ghanaian TV stations airing the movie.

This led to outrage from netizens who accused the station of airing the movie without permission.

Their concerns come amid backlash from some Nigerian movie producers who have accused Ghanaian TV stations of airing their movies, some barely days after their release, without consent.

In April 2025, following a video released by Nigerian producer Bimbo Ademoye making a similar accusation, the National Film Authority (NFA), led by Kafui Danku-Pitcher, warned TV stations to refrain from such activities or risk severe sanctions.

With this latest development, some Ghanaians have expressed outrage, condemning the station for its actions.

Others, however, have defended the actions, stating that they needed content to show their audiences.

Ghanaian socialite, Afia Schwarzenegger, also shared a video where she sent a voice note to Tyler Perry, reporting the stations for their actions.

President Mahama addressed the Ghana Horticulture Expo on June 11, 2025 President Mahama addressed the Ghana Horticulture Expo on June 11, 2025

President John Dramani Mahama has noted that the Tema and Takoradi ports will operate as 24-hour operational hubs after the official rollout of the 24-Hour Economy initiative on July 1, 2025.

According to him, this will serve as a new era for production in Ghana.

The president said this during his address at the ongoing Ghana Horticulture Expo on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

“We are also implementing a game-changing strategy, which is the 24-Hour Economy, to unlock Ghana’s production potential across all sectors. I am pleased to announce that from July 1, the 24-Hour Economy policy will be ready to go into operation,” he noted.

Effectively, the government will officially launch the 24-Hour Economy policy on July 1, 2025.

President Mahama said the policy will enhance productivity and revenue generation by promoting continuous economic activities, particularly in sectors like agribusiness and exports.

He added that the horticulture industry stands to hugely benefit from the 24-hour policy by enhancing the speed and efficiency of moving perishable goods such as pineapples, vegetables, and herbs from farms to international markets.

“This policy will provide the framework for continued production, processing, and logistics in horticulture. It allows perishable goods to move swiftly from the field to international shelves, thereby minimising losses and maximising value,” the president noted.

President Mahama, however, noted that the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, and the Ministry of Transport are collaborating with key agencies such as the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Shippers’ Council to operationalise 24-hour services at the Tema and Takoradi ports.

Frederick Ansah Botchway breaks silence on Samuel Boadu’s shocking exit from Hearts of Oak

Samuel Boadu was the manager of Hearts of Oak Samuel Boadu was the manager of Hearts of Oak

Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Frederick Ansah Botchway has spoken candidly about the club’s decision to part ways with coach Samuel Boadu, describing the move as painful and unexpected, especially considering the success Boadu brought to the team.

Boadu was dismissed just 18 months into his tenure despite guiding Hearts of Oak to their first league title in 11 years and securing five major trophies, including the Ghana Premier League, FA Cup, and Super Cup.

His sacking shocked many fans and observers, and now, one of his former key players has shared how it felt from the inside.

In a heartfelt reflection during an interview with Frank-Kamal Acheampong on GhanaWeb TV’s Sports Check, Botchway praised Boadu’s coaching style and his passionate approach to the game.

“Boadu is a very good coach. He’s a coach that is going to push you on your toes. Sometimes I see people talk about his reactions and sometimes how he voices out. But that is good, that is the determination, that is the spirit that he is trying to put on us on the field. It’s the same as training. Working with him has been very good, and we still keep in touch,” he said.

Botchway, who played a vital role in the club’s domestic treble-winning campaign under Boadu, admitted that the decision to sack the coach left him feeling deeply disappointed.

“It was a decision from the club, but I felt bad. Because I think after achieving that greatness, I think there are better and more days ahead for that coach. Especially when it comes to him and Accra Hearts of Oak. But alongside the way, that was a whole decision from the club.

They decide and they do what, at least, they think will help the club,” he added.

Despite the abrupt end to Boadu’s reign, Botchway remains respectful of the club’s choice, while holding firm in his belief that the coach had much more to offer, particularly to Hearts of Oak.

I Went Through Serious Depression, and It Was Only Prayer That Helped Me Overcome It – Kwabena Kwabena

0

Renowned Ghanaian highlife singer and songwriter, Kwabena Kwabena, has opened up about a deeply personal battle with depression — a period he describes as one of the darkest in his life and career.

Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio on Hitz FM, the “Aso” hitmaker, born George Kwabena Adu, shared his experience in hopes of encouraging others who may be facing similar mental health challenges.

“There was a time in my life I went through serious depression,” he revealed. “It was so intense that only those close to me can truly testify or describe what I went through.”

According to Kwabena Kwabena, his mental state at the time was so distorted that he often expressed his anguish unknowingly through social media. “Sometimes I look back at the posts I made and I ask myself, ‘OMG, did I actually write that?’ That’s how far depression can take you,” he admitted.

The celebrated musician also noted how his appearance changed during that period, leading people to draw false conclusions about him. “I look at my photos then and compare them to now — it gives me a clear view of what I went through. Depression affects more than just the mind; it affects how you look, how you live,” he said.

Kwabena Kwabena emphasized that one thing helped him emerge from that dark phase — prayer.

“For me, the only thing that helped and can help someone out of depression is prayer,” he stressed.

He also expressed deep appreciation for his mother, who stood by him and prayed with him through it all. “And I’m truly grateful to my mother, who prayed with me through it all,” he added with heartfelt emotion.

By sharing his journey, Kwabena Kwabena hopes to inspire others battling depression to speak up, seek support, and most importantly, turn to faith and prayer for strength.

“‘Resorting to Marshals at the Slightest Provocation’ — Assafuah Criticizes Deputy Speaker’s Actions

0

According to ModernGhana, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has come under criticism from Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, following a tense exchange in Parliament on June 10.

The confrontation erupted during a debate over the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), which has heightened tensions within the chamber.

During the session, Ahiafor, who also represents Akatsi South for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accused Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, Ranking Member on the Health Committee, of misusing his opportunity to deliver an urgent statement.

The situation escalated quickly, leading Ahiafor to instruct the Marshal of Parliament to remove Dr Afriyie, who represents Effiduase-Asokore, from the chamber.

Assafuah later addressed the matter on social media, strongly condemning the Deputy Speaker’s approach.

He argued that Ahiafor’s handling of the situation reflected an authoritarian attitude more suited to a bygone era than a modern democratic institution.

According to Assafuah, the Deputy Speaker’s refusal to allow a fellow MP to express his views undermined the principles of open debate and tolerance that are essential to parliamentary proceedings.

The Old Tafo MP expressed concern that using parliamentary security to silence differing opinions set a troubling precedent.

Dilapidated Mpasatia Seseko School Raises Concern

0

One of the dilapidated classrooms

The state of the classrooms at Mpasatia Seseko has become a growing concern for both students and teachers, as the facilities continue to deteriorate without the necessary attention and repairs.

Several classrooms are in urgent need of renovation. Cracks have formed along the walls, raising safety concerns, especially during the rainy season when water seeps through and creates an uncomfortable and sometimes hazardous learning environment.

The leaking roofs and damp conditions make it difficult for students to concentrate, and at times, lessons are disrupted altogether.

Additionally, the furniture in these classrooms is in poor condition. Many of the desks and chairs are broken, unstable, or completely unusable, making it challenging for students to sit comfortably or write effectively. The lack of proper seating arrangements not only affects academic performance but also undermines the dignity of education in the community.

Parents, teachers, and community leaders are appealing to the appropriate authorities, stakeholders, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to come to the aid of Mpasatia Seseko.

They believe that every child deserves a safe and conducive environment to learn and thrive, and the current state of the school falls far below that standard.

Immediate intervention is needed to repair the infrastructure and provide adequate furniture, ensuring that the school can fulfil its role in shaping the future of the children it serves.

Ghana’s waste management practice lag behind global standards- Expert

0

By Albert Oppong-Ansah

Accra, June 11, GNA – Waste management in Ghana remains far below international standards due to rapid urbanisation, increasing plastic and textile waste, and the absence of source separation, experts have said.

Mr. Solomon Noi-Adzeman Nuetey, Director of Waste Management at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), said that Ghana’s waste management practices were inadequate and failed to meet global benchmarks.

“Currently, our waste management practice is not the best. We are far behind several countries in sustainably dealing with the looming waste crisis using best practices,” he told the Ghana News Agency in an interview.

Mr. Nuetey said the decomposition of organic waste produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.

He added that Ghana had pledged to adopt circular waste practices to extend the life cycle of materials.

Mr. Nuetey explained that effective models already exist, pointing to the AMA’s pilot facility for processing organic waste as a step in the right direction.

“We need to invest in anaerobic digestion plants that can process organic waste, like food leftovers from restaurants, into gas, which can then be channelled back into kitchens for cooking,” he said.

He stressed the importance of waste separation at source.

“For plastics, paper, textiles, and other materials, once they are separated at source, they can be treated effectively, including through incineration,” he noted.

Mr. Nuetey said the prevailing practice of mixing all waste types in one bin hampered processing and left landfill disposal as the only viable option.

He observed that landfills in Ghana were filling up rapidly, posing significant environmental threats.

Citing the Kpong Engineered Landfill, Mr. Nuetey said the site, constructed under a World Bank-funded project—was built to last 25 years but reached full capacity within just three years due to excessive waste inflow from several districts.

“The site was built to receive 500 metric tonnes of waste per day but ended up receiving nearly 3,000 tonnes daily. No wonder it caught fire not long after it was overwhelmed,” he said.

He added that acquiring land for new waste disposal sites had become increasingly difficult, particularly in Accra, where most land is privately owned.

“Landowners are also increasingly unwilling to lease land for dumping untreated waste because they believe it devalues their property,” he said.

Despite years of interventions, poorly managed solid and liquid waste continues to affect urban areas, threatening public health, environmental safety, and tourism.

Data from the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources indicates that Ghana generates an estimated 12,710 tonnes of solid waste daily, with Accra accounting for nearly 15 per cent.

However, only 10 per cent of this waste is recycled, while the remainder is disposed of in landfills, open drains, unauthorised dumpsites, or openly burned.

The inefficient waste handling system has also contributed to worsening air quality.

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is the second leading environmental risk factor for disease in Ghana, linked to over 28,000 premature deaths annually.

Experts have cautioned that without immediate reforms, Ghana’s waste crisis will worsen, undermining public health, environmental sustainability, and national development goals.

Speaker Bagbin orders MPs, Ministers to regularise ‘side jobs’ within 14 days

0

Alban Bagbin is the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin is the Speaker of Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a firm directive to all Members of Parliament (MPs), ministers, and deputy ministers currently holding any office of profit or emoluments not expressly authorised by law, or falling outside constitutional exceptions, giving them a 14-day deadline for such individuals to regularise their positions or risk violating the 1992 Constitution.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, Speaker Bagbin emphasised that no member or government official shall retain such an office without prior approval from the Speaker.

He warned that “silence, oversight or informality shall not be accepted as a substitute for compliance.

“Any such member shall, within 14 days from the date of communication, submit to the Committee on Office of Profit a formal request for approval in accordance with the procedure set out under Standing Order 244.”

The directive requires full disclosure of the nature of the appointment, duties, remuneration, and any relevant information necessary for assessment.

The Committee on Office of Profit, chaired by the Second Deputy Speaker and comprising up to 14 members, has been instructed to treat all requests with urgency.

Speaker Alban Bagbin stressed that this move is to ensure compliance with Articles 78(3) and 98(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which are intended to maintain a balance between the executive and legislature, and to guard against undue influence, politicisation of institutions, and abuse of public office.

He noted that the increasing trend of MPs and ministers accepting appointments on boards, committees, and in private ventures, often without parliamentary scrutiny raises serious ethical and constitutional concerns.

“These provisions ensure that ministers and members do not convert public service into a platform for personal wealth accumulation,” Bagbin stated, adding that such practices could weaken oversight and compromise public trust in Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament reiterated that his discretion in approving such offices is bound by law and must follow committee recommendations.

The structured framework, he said, is not subject to personal interpretation or optional compliance.

He called on all MPs and ministers to adhere strictly to these constitutional and procedural requirements, reminding them that public office comes with a responsibility to uphold credibility, transparency, and institutional integrity.

This directive forms part of broader efforts to uphold accountability and restore full compliance with Ghana’s constitutional mandates concerning public service and political office, the report added.

NDC USA appeals to President Mahama to appoint diaspora members into government

0

Chairperson of the USA Chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Vivian Maame Aba Dadzie, has passionately appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to include members of the party in the diaspora in his new government.

Addressing NDC members at an annual conference and victory celebration in the United States, she emphasised that many Ghanaians abroad have acquired advanced knowledge, professional expertise, and global experience that can significantly benefit Ghana’s development agenda.

“I make this passionate appeal to the government and party leadership — do not overlook those in the diaspora,” she urged. “We have doctors, engineers, policy experts, tech innovators, finance professionals, and entrepreneurs who are ready to contribute to nation-building.”

Maame Aba Dadzie argued that NDC members in the diaspora played a pivotal role in securing the party’s 2024 electoral victory and must therefore not be sidelined.

“These professionals are architects of global innovation. Let us not leave these powerful resources untapped,” she stated. “We humbly request that some appointments in advisory roles and recognition be extended to the NDC in the diaspora.”

She noted that the diaspora chapter of the party had been positioned as a “strategic arm” of the NDC ahead of the elections, offering critical support that contributed to the party’s historic victory.

“Political capital must be rewarded if we are to keep the flame of commitment burning,” she underscored.

Maame Aba Dadzie further urged party members to be mindful of their public engagements, especially on social media. “The baton has been passed. We are no longer an opposition in exile — we are stakeholders in power, and with power comes responsibility,” she cautioned.

The event was attended by Deputy National Organiser of the NDC, Elikem Kotoko, who represented the party’s national leadership.
