Prof. Etse Sikanku calls for ‘national values discourse’ to strengthen Ghana’s democracy

Professor Etse Sikanku

Professor Etse Sikanku, an Associate Professor of Journalism, Media Studies, and Political Communication, has called for a national discussion on values to help reorient and awaken citizens to the principles that support the country’s democracy and development.

He believes such a discussion will help reshape public attitudes, change mindsets, and promote good governance.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Inside Pages to mark Independence Day, Professor Sikanku stressed the need to revisit conversations about the nation’s cherished values and what it truly means to be Ghanaian.

“This is a good time to reflect on our national identity and unity. There is a clear link between our traditional values and democratic principles. We need to build an Afrocentric democracy, a Ghanaian democracy that reflects our unique context and beliefs,” he said.

He called for the promotion of civic responsibility as part of a national reorientation campaign to curb social vices and instill patriotism.

Professor Sikanku also noted that political discussions in the country had become too harsh and divisive, which goes against the traditional values of respect and decency.

He argued that many of the country’s traditional values could help create a democracy that is more progressive, unifying, respectful, accountable, and transparent- one that encourages dialogue instead of conflict, extremism, sensationalism, and excessive partisanship.

Additionally, he emphasised that the nation’s development depends not only on economic factors but also on a shift in national mindset and attitudes. Such a change, he said, would strengthen civic culture, nationalism, and patriotism, particularly among the youth.

Professor Sikanku also commended President John Dramani Mahama for organising a scaled-down version of the Independence Day celebrations, noting that this approach would help reduce costs and save public funds.

Fidelity Bank Ghana has been crowned “Best Bank in Financial Inclusion in West Africa” at the prestigious 15th Africa Bank 4.0 Summit and Awards – West Africa, held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

This significant accolade recognises the bank’s pioneering efforts in expanding financial access to millions of previously unbanked and underbanked Ghanaians over the past decade.

“This award is a testament to the tireless efforts of our team and partners, particularly our agents, and the unflinching commitment we have shown to bridging the financial gap in Ghana over the years,” said Julian Opuni, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Ghana. “We have always believed that banking should be inclusive. Our innovative products and strategic partnerships have not only expanded our customer base but have also driven economic growth by empowering individuals and communities. This award reinforces our commitment to support every Ghanaian’s financial journey—truly, we are here for your journey.”

The award follows a decade of groundbreaking initiatives, beginning with a stark realization: in 2011, a staggering 70% of the Ghanaian population was unbanked. Fidelity Bank, recognizing this critical gap, embarked on a transformative journey to bring banking services to the underserved.

“We understood that traditional banking models were failing to reach a significant portion of the population,” explained Dr. David Okyere, Head of Agency Banking at Fidelity Bank. “We needed to break down barriers and bring banking services to the people, rather than expecting people to come to the bank.”

In his remarks during the award ceremony, Dr. Okyere expressed gratitude to the CEO, the board, and management of Fidelity Bank for their unwavering support in achieving this milestone.

He dedicated the award to the hardworking Inclusive and Agency Banking teams, whose dedication, commitment, and resilience have been instrumental in overcoming the challenges associated with driving financial inclusion.

Kevin Taylor has mocked his current rival and nemesis, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, following revelations that he purchases likes for his show, For the Records, from South East Asian nations.

A video that went viral on Monday showed that most of the likes on a recent episode of For the Records were from Bangladeshi and Vietnamese nationals, who had presumably been paid to artificially boost the program to enable it go viral.

After Afrifa was busted for having fake likes, Kevin Taylor took to social media, specifically X (formerly Twitter), to mock him.

He said Afrifa is disgracing himself with his actions. According to Kevin Taylor, while other people purchase wigs and clothing from Vietnam, he is only interested in buying likes from them.

He wrote: “While people are buying suits and hair from Vietnam some people are busy buying auto likes. eiii boi,”

The U.S. based Ghanaian political commentator is currently embroiled in a bitter battle with Okatakyie Afrifa, a former host on Angel Fm.

Afrifa, after leaving his position at Angel, started his own online in the same vein as Kevin Taylor’s With All Due Respect. Okatakyie also started attacking Kevin, sparking a beef that is still ongoing.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, is presenting the first Budget and Economic Policy of the John Dramani Mahama administration in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

The minister will be presenting the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Article 179 of the 1992 Constitution and Section 21 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921).

Dr Ato Forson is expected to touch on the real state of Ghana’s economy and the policy objectives of the Mahama administration to tackle the country’s current economic challenges.

Finance minister Dr Ato Forson is expected to update Ghanaians on the state of the economy that the Mahama administration inherited from the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

President Mahama, during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, indicated that the finance minister will be telling Ghanaians about the “criminally handled economy” he inherited from Akufo-Addo, which, according to him, is worse than he thought.

He is also expected to touch on the country’s debt stance, which currently stands at around GH¢720 billion. The country’s national debt before the Akufo-Addo government took over was less than GH¢100 billion. Available data show that Ghana’s debt grew by more than 80% under the Akufo-Addo government.

The finance minister is also expected to touch on social intervention policies like the Free SHS, the No-Academic-Fee policy, and trainee allowance, among others.

Dr Ato Forson is expected to touch on issues regarding the economy, Ghana’s macroeconomic stability, fiscal consolidation, cost of living, and the general standard of living of Ghanaians.

Agyemang-Badu speaks on calls for Dede Ayew to retire from the Black Stars

Dede Ayew and Agyemang-Badu Dede Ayew and Agyemang-Badu

Former Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has urged Ghanaians to desist from pressuring Andre Dede Ayew to retire from the Black Stars.

According to him, as long as the Le Havre forward plays consistently for his club side and performs well, he can continue to make himself available for selection.

The former Udinese midfielder also indicated that the decision lies in the hands of Black Stars coach Otto Addo to select Dede Ayew if he fits his plans to add value to the team.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Agyemang-Badu said that with Dede Ayew’s long-standing service to the Black Stars, he should be allowed to decide his future instead of pressuring him to leave with bitterness.

“Andre knows his body more than I do. If he feels good, is performing well for his club, and the coach wants him, fine. The decision to continue or stop should be his. I just don’t want anyone to leave the national team with bitterness,” he stated.

In a recent interview with BBC Sport, Dede Ayew made it clear that he has no intention of retiring from the national team anytime soon, reaffirming his commitment.

Ayew debuted for the Black Stars in 2007 when the team played a friendly match against Senegal. Since then, he has been an integral part of the team, rising to become the captain until 2024.

The former Marseille player has made 120 appearances for the Black Stars and scored 24 goals.

It remains to be seen whether Otto Addo will name him as part of the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.
