This marks President Mahama’s first official trip to the country since assuming office and his second meeting with Burkina Faso’s Military Leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore since January 7, 2025.
Captain Traoré had previously attended the inauguration ceremony of President Mahama on January 7, 2025, where he received a warm and enthusiastic reception from a large crowd at the Black Star Square upon the mention of his name.

Kalsegra, (UW/R), March 10, GNA – Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, a gold exploration company in the Upper West Region, has engaged women in Kalsegra, a community in the Nadowli Kaleo District, to empower them to thrive in their live endeavours.
The engagement comprised a series of activities, including health work with the community members, health screening and a forum on women empowerment.
The women were given health education, business financial literacy and management and general women and girls’ empowerment initiatives.
Speaking at the event at Kalsegra at the weekend, Mr Owusu Ansah, the Human Resource Manager of the Company, emphasised the need for accelerated actions through constructive decisions and deliberate efforts to empower women to contribute to their communities’ development.
He explained that as part of the efforts, the Company had been supporting brilliant but needy female students in some communities, including Kalsegra to excel in their education and to become the “better versions of themselves.”
Mr Ansah encouraged female students to identify and pursue their talents and interest areas including technical and vocational education.
“We are not saying you should limit yourselves to technical and vocational training alone, if you are good at any other subject or profession, pursue it and chase your dreams.
You can be a lawyer, you can be an accountant, you can be whatever you want to be, don’t feel restricted, if you are good at it go for it, nothing or nobody should limit you or restrict you,” he added.
Some successful women in the region also shared their stories and experiences with the girls and young women at the event to encourage and motivate them to aspire for higher heights in life.
Madam Janet Kpan, the Girl Child Coordinator, Upper West Regional Education Directorate, sharing her story, encouraged the girls and young women to be bold and assertive in pursuing their interest, including leadership roles without fear.
She also advised them to pick successful women in society as role models, learn from them and seek advice and counseling to succeed in their endeavours.
Madam Rukia Salifu, the Manager of the Technology Solution Centre (TSC) at Nadowli, said it was a misconception that some particular works were reserved for men, but said females could succeed in those fields if they were determined.
“If you are determined, you will get what you want. Among the 32 District Managers of TSC in Ghana, I am the only woman.
It should not just be the weaving or tailoring that you can do as females, you can also do the welding and fabricating,” she admonished.
Mr Solomon Dery, Senior Community Relations Officer at Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, underscored the importance of women’s empowerment and their role in driving sustainable development.
He reiterated the commitment of the company to take initiatives through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to empower women in the region, especially their host communities to enhance their livelihoods.

Nigerian actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli has publicly called out Ghanaian television stations for broadcasting her movies without obtaining the required licenses.
Taking to Instagram on Saturday evening, Oboli expressed her frustration over the unauthorized airing of her films and criticized the Ghana National Film Authority for failing to address the issue.
She did not hold back in her statement, vowing to take legal action against the TV stations involved.

The Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has addressed the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections and the internal divisions that may have contributed to the outcome.
During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen Show on Monday, February 10, the Director declared his willingness to take responsibility if blamed for the loss, while calling for unity and reform within the party.
“If I am blamed for our defeat during the 2024 elections, for the party to re-organise itself for the next election, I accept that,” he stated.
He also added “If that will bring peace and harmony to the party, I accept it.”
The Communications Director also took the opportunity to clarify his role during the 2024 campaign, stating that he was not responsible for handling finances.
“First of all, I would like to put it on record that I was not the Director of Finance for the campaign, so I didn’t handle money,” he explained.
Mr Aboagye also touched on the fragmented nature of the communications department during the election period. He noted that there were significant challenges within the team, revealing that the former Communications Director, Yaw Adomako Baafi, was unhappy with their appointment.
“Yaw Adomako Baafi wasn’t happy with my appointment as the Communications Director, and that is even on record,” he said.
He noted that the former Communications Director appeared once in their meetings.
“He never showed up at our meetings prior to the 2024 elections; he was only there once,” he noted.

Ghana’s economy expanded by 5.7% in 2024, surpassing the revised 3.1% growth rate recorded in 2023.
However, growth in the fourth quarter of 2024 slowed to 3.6%, down from 7.2% in the third quarter, reflecting a loss of momentum despite ongoing economic resilience.
The slowdown in Q4 was largely driven by weaker growth in the Industry sector, which expanded by just 0.2%.
A significant factor was the sharp contraction in mining and quarrying, which accounted for about 43% of the Industry sector’s total value.
The Services sector remained the largest contributor to GDP, representing 49.2% of total output, followed by Industry (31.9%) and Agriculture (19.0%).
At constant 2013 prices, Ghana’s oil GDP for Q4 2024 stood at GH₵53,137.0 million, while non-oil GDP was GH₵50,262.5 million. In nominal terms, GDP at basic prices reached GH₵308,086.5 million.

Over the last year, the collective effort of employees has seen the renovation of a community clinic, under-equipped Information Computer Technology (ICT) labs in rural communities being completely refurbished and equipped with computers and tech accessories as well as the construction of boreholes to increase access to water supply in deprived areas.
Bridging the digital divide
Young people in the Anfoega Traditional Area, which consists of 13 small communities, have long faced the challenge of learning hands-on digital skills as there are no computers functioning in the schools. Students struggle to learn essential ICT skills that would improve their performance in school and more importantly, in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Telecel Ghana’s Finance, Digital Transformation and Commercial Operations teams came to the aid of the communities by spearheading the renovation, furnishing and equipping of the computer lab at the Anfoega Akukome E.P Primary School. With the new, state-of-the-art ICT lab handed over to the community in February, young people are developing their digital skills in the lab, which is available to them during and after school hours.
“I’ve always believed in the power of education, and it is unfair that some young people are deprived of access to basic digital tools to develop their skills,” said Divine Madzi, a project leader and Cash Operations Support Executive. “When we raised the funds to complete the renovation and equipping of the lab, it felt like we were giving them a better future.”
Water is life
In Akohia Siasi near Asesewa in the Eastern Region, Telecel employees led by the technology team and the CEO’s office have recently inaugurated a water borehole in the town to provide clean and reliable water to over 150 homes and families, who previously struggled to access safe drinking water. Recognising the severe water scarcity in the community, employees banded together to raise funds to match the seed fund from Telecel Foundation and organised resources for the borehole.
“Clean water is a basic human need and right, and we’re proud to have played a role in bringing this vital resource to Akohia Siasi. It will not only improve health and sanitation but also contribute to a better quality of life for the community,” said Ing. Juliana Ametorwogo, project lead and technology specialist at Telecel Ghana.
At the core of Red Hearts are the employees who embrace the spirit of volunteerism by crowdfunding to raise the necessary funds and dedicating their time to oversee the completion of the projects. Telecel Ghana’s CEO, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai expressed pride in the extensive community impact of the EVP initiatives.

We believe in connecting energies for the greater good and Red Hearts is a shining example of how our employees play an active role in shaping the future of our local communities. A popular Ghanaian media personality, MzGee, has recounted the various forms of abuse and cyberbullying she endured during her years of childlessness.
According to her, random people on the internet said painful things to her during the course of her work.
She noted that some persons were audacious enough to even enter her inbox on social media to dish out unwarranted advice and hurl insults at her sometimes.
Speaking during the ‘Stronger Together Women’s Health Conference’ on March 8, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, she said, “Some people even entered my DMs to insult me and say all sorts of things. If I type the word barren in my dms right now, you’d be amazed at the number of messages that will pop up.”
MzGee further asked people to be gracious to women who are striving to have children of their own.
According to her, women are saddled with so many reproductive issues that render them incapable of conceiving or carrying their pregnancies to full term.
She recounted her experiences while noting that her faith in God was her anchor in difficult times.
MzGee, who announced her pregnancy and delivery later in January 2025, noted that she gave birth at age 39, an age that many may deem too old.
“What have the doctors said, what are you saying to yourself, what are you doing about it, what has God said about your situation? she advised.
She added that after asking these questions, the answer should clear the path for one to know the best way to handle their situation.
The Stronger Together Women’s Health Conference was organised by media personality Adwoa Amofa Osei on International Women’s Day on the theme ‘Bold Conversations on Women’s Health’.
The conference brought together medical professionals and women with various backgrounds to open up about issues that women face in the area of their health.
Participants of the conference noted that the experience was worth it and looked forward to it happening again.
The said the space allowed for vulnerability and served as a platform for learning and hearing stories that matter.

Security expert Col. Festus Boahen Aboagye (rtd) has dismissed assertions that President John Dramani Mahama being driven by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, poses a security risk.
President Mahama faced criticism from some members of the public after videos of Ibrahim Mahama driving him during a visit to flood-stricken areas in the Volta Region last week went viral. Critics argued that the action compromised the president’s security.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb on Monday, March 10, 2025, Col. Aboagye stated that the incident had no security implications.
He explained that the president’s security team was present at the time and would have intervened if the situation posed any risk.
“I don’t see anything wrong with it unless one assumes that presidential drivers are the best in town, which is not necessarily the case. There could be other individuals who are better drivers than official presidential drivers.
“When you become president, a security arrangement is established for you. So, the president’s security detail was present, even if they were not in uniform. The vehicles positioned before and after the president’s vehicle would have contained security personnel.
“So, personally, I don’t see the security risk—unless, of course, his brother is a reckless driver,” Col. Aboagye said.
However, the retired colonel noted that the issue raised concerns about protocol rather than security.
He pointed out that it was not proper protocol for the president to be driven by his brother in a state vehicle while designated personnel were available for the task.
“This raises questions of protocol, not security. It is inappropriate for anyone who is not certified as a state official to drive the president’s official vehicle.
“So, while it is not a security issue, people may question whether it is the right thing to do,” he said.
Col. Aboagye added that if an accident had occurred while Ibrahim was driving the president, it could have led to significant legal concerns regarding whether the president should have been in that situation when designated personnel were available.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has projected a further decline in inflation rates
Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has projected a drop in Ghana’s inflation rate to 8% plus or minus (±) 2% within the year, down from the current 23.1%, indicating a 13% to 15% reduction in headline inflation.
He made this known during an X Space discussion on Sunday, March 9, 2024, emphasising the government’s commitment to stabilising the economy and addressing the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
“There is a significant cost-of-living crisis, and it is getting worse. We need to take steps to reverse this trend. Some of the measures include stabilising and consolidating the economy through fiscal discipline to ensure economic stability. Our goal is to bring inflation down to 8% plus or minus ( ±) 2% by the end of the year,” he said.
Inflation rate for February 2025 has declined slightly to 23.1% from the 23.5% recorded in January, largely driven mainly by food inflation.
Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, announcing the new inflation rate, attributed the decline to a consistent drop in food inflation over the past four months.
Despite the decline, he pointed out that the February annual inflation rate was still the third-highest recorded in the last 10 months.

Executive Council member of the GFA, Gifty Oware-Mensah
Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Gifty Oware-Mensah, has not been detained by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), GhanaWeb understands.
Contrary to earlier reports that she was detained on Friday, March 7, 2025, GhanaWeb has learned that the Berry Ladies co-owner was only interrogated during her visit to the NIB base, which prolonged her stay.
This was her first interrogation regarding her alleged involvement in the National Service Scheme (NSS) payroll fraud scandal.
A source close to GhanaWeb confirmed that she had been voluntarily visiting the NIB since her return to Ghana after a national team assignment in Morocco.
Gifty Oware-Mensah returned to Ghana on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 after traveling with the Black Queens for their international friendly against Morocco.

President John Dramani Mahama ordered the NIB to conduct an immediate investigation into the operations of the NSS under the previous government following the discovery of up to 81,885 suspected ghost names on the Authority’s payroll.
Gifty Oware-Mensah was allegedly a beneficiary of the scandal during her tenure at the NSS and was invited by the NIB for questioning.

A KPMG/UNDP 2025 Pre-Budget Survey has revealed that over 50% of businesses are calling for the removal of the E-levy and COVID-19 levy, while a substantial 72% of respondents support the implementation of the 24-Hour Economy Policy.
The findings also show that 80% of respondents are confident that the new government’s policies in the 2025 budget will drive economic recovery. This optimism is largely based on anticipated tax relief and the successful rollout of the 24-hour economy.
The survey which was conducted via face-to-face interviews and online instruments from 11th to 21st February 2025, gathered insights from 233 leading large, small, and medium-sized businesses across 10 sectors in Ghana on the impact of current policies and to offer actionable feedback to the government through the Ministry of Finance for the upcoming budget and future cycles.
However, abolishing the proposed taxes is expected to create a substantial revenue shortfall. Respondents therefore suggested that the government should explore alternative revenue sources while prioritising expenditure reduction.
Key recommendations include expanding the tax base to incorporate the informal sector, reintroducing road tolls, privatising or divesting underperforming State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and reviewing existing tax policies.
Furthermore, respondents emphasised the need for an enabling environment to maximise the benefits of the 24-hour economy policy. They recommend that the government enhance security and public safety, ensure a stable electricity supply, improve transport and infrastructure, and offer tax incentives to businesses.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has confirmed that the government will abolish the E-Levy and the COVID levy in the upcoming 2025 budget, set to be presented on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
These measures form part of the government’s 120-day Social Contract, which outlines 26 key pledges aimed at revitalising the economy and easing the financial burden on citizens.
Among the commitments are the removal of the E-Levy, the COVID levy, a 10% tax on bet winnings, and the emissions levy—all within the administration’s first 90 days in office.
Addressing journalists in Accra on Friday, March 7, Ofosu also revealed plans to review taxes and levies on vehicles and equipment imported for industrial and agricultural purposes.
He further highlighted the government’s intention to launch the 24-Hour Economy Policy and implement a ‘No-Academic-Fee’ policy for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions. Additionally, the first budget will introduce the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank and key job creation programmes.

According to Professor Akosa, it is an insult to Ghanaian doctors and healthcare professionals for them to be bypassed by politicians who travel abroad.
He added that if politicians are forced to receive treatment here whenever sick, they would invest in infrastructure to keep our hospitals operating at maximum efficiency.
Prof. Akosa made these remarks during a recent interview in which he also tackled the issue of politicians and government appointees sending their children abroad to study there.
He said, just like healthcare, these leaders should be forced to educate their children in Ghana.

President John Mahama has announced plans to strengthen economic cooperation between Ghana and Burkina Faso, with discussions underway to establish a direct flight between Accra and Ouagadougou.
Speaking after a meeting with Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President Mahama revealed that a Ghanaian airline is set to operate a daily flight between the two capitals, aiming to enhance connectivity and facilitate trade.
“We discussed trade between our two countries, particularly in agricultural products, and how we can ease the process for exporters and importers.
One of the key initiatives is the introduction of a direct Accra-Ouagadougou flight, with an airline in Ghana already showing interest,” he stated.
In addition to air connectivity, President Mahama noted that discussions also focused on energy cooperation.
According to him, plans are underway to increase Ghana’s electricity exports to Burkina Faso, alongside enhancing the transit corridor for petroleum products.
He revealed that Burkina Faso recently acquired a fuel storage terminal, and both countries are considering extending Ghana’s existing pipeline from Bolgatanga to Ouagadougou to streamline fuel and diesel supply.

Chairman of the National Economic Forum, Dr. Ishmael Yamson
The Chairman of the National Economic Forum, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has expressed concern over poor economic mismanagement in the country and its growing reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues on Monday, March 10, 2025, he asserted that Ghana does not need external financial aid to run its affairs.
Dr. Yamson attributed the country’s persistent dependence on foreign aid to political mismanagement of its economic resources.
“It is the 17th time we have gone to the Fund in our 68 years of independence. That is my worry. And I pray that we don’t go for an 18th time. We will only avoid it if we reset this country, reset our mindset, begin to think about Ghana, and put Ghana first in everything we do,” he noted.
He continued, “Ghanaians living abroad sent $6 billion to Ghana in 2024 in remittances. So why do we have to borrow? What did we do with their money, the money from Ghanaians in the diaspora? If we can stop the mismanagement and corruption, Ghana doesn’t need anybody’s money to run this country and improve the lives of its people.”

Health officials and veterinary officers in the Ashanti Region have expressed deep concern over the rising cases of rabies in the region.
Their concerns follow the tragic death of a 12-year-old student from the disease.
The deceased, a Junior High School pupil in the Effiduase Asokore District, was bitten by a dog on October 6, 2024.
However, the incident was only reported to the hospital on February 12, 2025, when her condition had worsened. Despite several efforts to save her, she succumbed to the disease.
Veterinary officers in the Ashanti Region revealed that this case is one of many, as rabies infections continue to rise.
Speaking to Channel One News , Ashanti Regional Veterinary Director, Dr Mabel Abudu, emphasised that despite the growing number of cases, many people fail to report dog bites or seek timely medical attention.
She further lamented the lack of logistics, human resources, and essential support, which hinder efforts to raise awareness and conduct vaccination exercises.
She therefore called for increased investment in the Veterinary Directorate to address the challenge.
“Because we are unable to carry out annual rabies immunization, the disease has spread across the district. We are urging individuals to bring their pets for immunization, as it is their responsibility. However, most of these animals are in rural areas, and their owners often cannot afford the cost. Even when we charge as little as GHC 10 or GHC 15 per animal, many are unable to pay.
“Given these challenges, it should be the responsibility of the government. The services we render come at a fee, so what stops the government from setting aside a percentage of funds monthly for purchasing vaccines and other necessary logistical equipment?” she questioned.
Dr. Abudu stressed that without adequate government support, rabies cases will continue to rise, posing a significant public health risk.

Ghanaian pathologist, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has cautioned against the consumption of seed oils, describing them as unfit for the human body.
He made this statement during an interview with ‘Talking Africa’ on March 8, 2025, while addressing poor eating habits of Ghanaians.
The pathologist and lifestyle wellness consultant recommended the use of natural tropical oils for cooking.
“Tropical oils are the best option for you. They are natural oils. Be it coconut oil, groundnut oil, palm kernel oil, palm oil, shea butter and other natural tropical oils.
“Seed oils are industrial oils. They were created because the West didn’t want to spend all their money importing tropical oils. So, they produced their own oil. I can tell you that those oils are fit for machines not for the human body. I say this with all sincerity. I don’t believe any president should ban them but, they must educate their people to eat their own organic oils,” he said.
While explaining the safety of natural oils, he stated that seed oils were industrially created in 1910 and Africans were made to believe that they were premium oils.
“If you grate coconut and put it in the sun, the oil drips. If you boil the flesh of the palm nut and put ice on it, the oil solidifies and you can just take it and warm it. Then you have palm oil. If you take palm kernel and you grate it just like coconut, you’ll get oil. These are natural.
“You cannot boil maize and get oil. You can’t! It doesn’t happen! You have to take the seeds through industrial processes. 1910 brought the creation of seed oil and they told us the seed oils are the best, but I will tell you in all sincerity that they aren’t the best oils for you,” he said.
He added that every person is responsible for his or her own health and must consciously be guided by the choice of food they consume.
He also advised the public to adopt lifestyles that promote health and wellness.
“It is a common adage in public health that you produce your health. Your health is not produced by health professionals. Therefore, what you eat, how much water you drink, the physical exercises you do, the mental exercises you do, are all beneficial to your health,” he said.
Prof Badu Akosa also indicated that African cuisines are largely starch-based and hence pose a lot of health challenges.
He urged Ghanaians to ensure that they eat a balanced diet with the right proportions of protein, vegetable and carbohydrate.
“As Africans, our food is too much starch-based. It’s too much carbohydrates-based. Carbohydrates ends up in your body as sugar. So, you may not be eating granulated sugars or cube sugar per say, but the amount of food you eat, the white rice, white bread are all starch-based. So, ensure that a third of your servings for a meal constitutes only 1/3 of carbohydrates. The other 2/3 must be proteins and vegetables with a fair inclusion of fats and natural oils,” he said.

Chief Moomen is a popular Ghanaian poet
Writers are not at risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), according to renowned playwright and poet Chief Moomen.
He noted that while AI may be able to replicate certain technical aspects of writing, the technology lacks the depth and humanity that define true artistry.
“The essence of creativity is something spiritual, and I don’t think a machine will ever replace that,” the creative entrepreneur emphasised.
“If AI becomes mainstream, we will have a series of mechanical outputs that cannot be interacted with on a natural, emotional level,” he added.
Moomen was speaking as a special guest at Unplugged & Reconciled, a ‘sip and chat’ event organised by 365Mustang for Literary Lovers in Accra on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
His comments underscored the belief that AI, rather than eliminating writers, will elevate human creativity to a premium.
In his words, as AI-generated content spreads, human creativity will carve out a niche market where authenticity and originality are highly valued.
“Maybe AI will reduce the number of writers in the system, but the few who survive will become highly sought after. People will crave human creativity in a world flooded with machine-generated content,” he added.
The founder of 365Mustang and lead curator of Unplugged & Reconciled, Kingsley Elikem Doe, also stated, “What the team seeks to achieve with this event can be likened to a church, which is a sanctuary for the unrighteous to gain salvation. This is simply a space for literary creatives to rediscover their joy for reading and writing as a pushback against the dominance of social media, streaming platforms, and bite-sized content.”
He continued, “We can collectively agree the world is changing, mostly due to the proliferation of technology. The case is almost inevitable; attention spans are shrinking, and books are increasingly competing with notifications and viral trends. What we can do, however, is control the phenomenon.”

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu
The Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the Indonesian government to consider establishing an Islamic Medical University in Northern Ghana.
He emphasized that such an institution would help bridge the development gap between the northern and southern regions of the country while strengthening bilateral and educational ties between Ghana and Indonesia.
Haruna Iddrisu made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Ghana, H.E. Paskal A.B. Rois, at his office in Accra. The visit aimed to brief the minister on Indonesian scholarship opportunities, which have already benefited several Ghanaian students.
Tracing the historical ties between the two nations, the minister highlighted the contributions of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and Indonesia’s first president, H.E. Achmed Sukarno, who solidified relations through the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
He expressed confidence that the Honorary Consul would continue to foster opportunities that would benefit both countries.
The minister stressed the importance of science, mathematics, and engineering in modern education and underscored Ghana’s shortage of medical professionals, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
He asserted that an Islamic Medical University in Northern Ghana could significantly contribute to medical education while further strengthening ties between the predominantly Muslim communities in Northern Ghana and Indonesia.
H.E. Paskal A.B. Rois welcomed the minister’s proposal and assured him that he would escalate the discussion to the highest levels for consideration by Indonesian authorities.
He also provided updates on Indonesia’s KNB Scholarship, which is currently open, along with several other scholarship programs available for students from developing countries, including Ghana.
According to Mr. Rois, more than 60 Ghanaian students are currently enrolled in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs in Indonesia, with some having returned after completing their studies.
He also revealed that his office had engaged with Ghanaian universities, including Ghana Technology University (GTU), the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to foster academic partnerships.
These engagements are expected to lead to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for student and faculty exchange programs between Ghanaian and Indonesian institutions.
Rois expressed optimism that Haruna Iddrisu’s leadership would contribute to revitalizing Ghana’s education sector and further deepening educational collaborations between the two nations.

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has for the first time revealed his deep regret over missing a penalty in the 2010 World Cup final.
Speaking in an interview, Gyan said the moment feels him with deep regret as he let down his country and the entire continent of Africa that was cheering him on.
Gyan revealed how he missed the penalty, admitting that the technique he had planned in using to hit the ball was not actually what ended up happening.
He added that the day before the game, he had practiced 20 penalties in training and scored all of them. Therefore, he was feeling very confident about scoring but the keeper’s movements confused him and ended up making him hit the shot with bad technique.

Accra, March 10, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Monday held a bilateral meeting with Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Interim Leader of Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou.
The meeting is a continuation of President Mahama’s visit to West African states in pursuit of Ghana’s long-standing foreign policy of good neighbourliness.
Speaking to the press after their closed-door meeting, President Mahama expressed gratitude to President Captain Traoré for attending his inauguration on January 7, in Accra.
The two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, such as the Issues of the Alliance of Sahel States, a confederation formed between Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso after leaving the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS).
President Mahama had earlier visited his Malian counterpart, President General Assimi Goita in Bamako on Saturday and General Abdourahamane Tchiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland of Niger in Niamey on Sunday.
He noted that he had got new perspectives about the concerns that the three countries had in respect of their relations with ECOWAS and assured his Burkina Faso counterpart that at the next ECOWAS meeting he would pass on what they had explained to him to the other West African leaders.
“I think there’s a breakdown of trust amongst the leadership. It will take time to rebuild it, but we must work on it so that we restore trust and confidence with each other; so that we can work together, even if we are not part of the same regional body,” President Mahama said.
Touching on security, President Mahama said quoting an African proverb said: “When your neighbour’s house is on fire you have to help him to quench it otherwise it will spread to your own house”.
He said terrorism started with Mali and had spread gradually into Niger and now into Burkina Faso. “Terrorism is like a cancer. If you don’t fight it together it will spread throughout the body. So how we can collaborate in terms of the fight against terrorism is another issue we discussed.”
He said they also discussed economic relations in respect of trade between their people, free movements of their people between their countries and how they could improve the transit trade through Ghana for Burkina Faso importers, who bring their goods through Ghana to Burkina Faso.
President Mahama said they talked about how they could improve the transit corridor to be able to do that without any disturbance.
He said they also discussed trade between Ghana and Burkina Faso in agricultural products and the exportation of some products from Ghana to Burkina Faso and vice versa.
He said they were also looking at a possible direct flight from Accra to Ouagadougou at least once a day; adding that there was an airline in Ghana that wants to start that flight.
With regards to energy, President Mahama said they discussed how Ghana could increase the supply of power to Burkina Faso and the transit corridor for petroleum products.
He said recently Burkina Faso had bought a storage terminal in Tema; adding that they were looking to see how they could use the pipeline.
“We have a pipeline to Bolgatanga, and we want to extend it to Ouagadougou so that we can push the fuel and diesel products through,” President Mahama said.

Madam Blay is a highly accomplished professional with over 20 years of experience in Ghana’s energy sector and beyond.

The youth therefore view Madam Blay’s appointment as a strategic decision to address longstanding challenges in the Nzema area, particularly in infrastructure development and youth employment.
According to the Convener of the Concerned Youth of Nzema, Jonas Kabutey, the Acting Ghana Gas CEO’s is expected to bring strategic direction to the organisation to ensure efficiency and growth in the country’s gas sector.
He noted that the appointment marks a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector, given Madam Blay’s extensive experience in leadership, policy development, and sustainable business practices.
The Acting MD of Ghana Gas is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) UK and holds an MA in International Transactions from George Mason University, USA.
She holds an MSc in Procurement & Supply Chain Management from KNUST, and a BA in French and Linguistics from the University of Ghana.
She is pursuing an LLM in Public Procurement Law & Policy at the University of Nottingham.
She is an alumna of Wesley Girls’ High School and had served as an advisory board member for the Western Regional Coastal Foundation and other sustainability initiatives.

Ghana has secured a grant worth 1.92 billion Japanese Yen (approximately US$13 million) from Japan to enhance the stability of electricity supply in Tamale City.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the announcement via a Facebook post on Monday, March 10, 2025.
In his post, he mentioned that he had signed an Exchange of Notes with the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Yoshimoto Hiroshi, to facilitate the grant.

The High Court (Human Rights Division) has overturned the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) decision to revoke the operating licence of defunct Ideal Finance Limited.
Justice Nana Brew, presiding over the case on Monday March 10, 2025 ruled that the central bank did not properly execute the revocation process, leading to the court’s decision to overturn it.
BoG had initially revoked the company’s licence as part of its financial sector clean-up exercise, citing insolvency and poor governance structures.
However, the court ruled that the revocation was unjustified, capricious, null, and void effectively restoring Ideal Finance’s legal standing.
Background
In 2018, the management of Ideal Finance urged the public to disregard a false publication claiming that the Bank of Ghana was set to take over its operations due to liquidity challenges.
According to Ideal Finance, the publication was untrue and contained fictitious quotes attributed to the then Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
Ideal Finance was among the 23 insolvent savings and loans companies and finance houses whose licenses were revoked by the Bank of Ghana during its clean-up exercise.
The revocation was based on the company’s insolvency, despite a reasonable period of engagement with the Central Bank, during which it was expected that shareholders would recapitalise the company to restore solvency.

The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has revised its National Validation Zonal Engagement schedule to include Sunyani, responding to public calls for broader participation in the ongoing constitutional review process.
In a statement issued on Monday, March 10, 2025, Dr. Rainer Akumperigya, Secretary to the CRC, announced that the updated schedule now covers eight zones, with engagements set to take place from April 7 to May 9, 2025.
The Sunyani session is scheduled for April 22-23, 2025, providing stakeholders and the public in the Bono Region with an opportunity to contribute their views on Ghana’s constitutional reforms.
The CRC underscored the importance of public participation in shaping the country’s governance framework and has provided multiple platforms for submissions to ensure an inclusive process.
The committee is urging citizens, civil society organisations, and relevant stakeholders to actively engage in the discussions as the review seeks to address key national concerns and enhance governance structures.

Residents of Obirikorang Amanfro, a community in the Eastern Region, can now access clean drinking water following the inauguration of a mechanised borehole constructed by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Sigma Mu Sigma Chapter (Ghana Sigmas), in partnership with Mt. Enon Baptist Church in the United States.
The project, which aims to alleviate water shortages and improve sanitation, was officially handed over on March 9, 2025, with a delegation from the fraternity and their partners in attendance.
Commitment to community development
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr Edmund T. Sherrill, Pastor of Mt. Enon Baptist Church, described the initiative as part of the church’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian efforts in Ghana.
“We believe in transforming lives according to the Word of God, and we believe in doing what God has called us to do—helping those in need. We were excited to provide this borehole for the community because it was much needed,” he stated.
Dr Sherrill explained that Mt. Enon Baptist Church has been involved in various charity projects in Ghana for the past 10 years, and after consultations with Michael Darko, a key partner in the initiative, Obirikorang Amanfro was identified as a community in dire need of potable water.
On his partnership with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, he noted that his relationship with the fraternity spans over three decades, and their shared mission to improve lives has driven several community projects.
“I have been a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for 33 years, and we have been working together since my first visit to Ghana to bring change to communities,” he said.
The President of Phi Beta Sigma Ghana, Eric Amo, described the provision of clean water as a core focus of their community development efforts.
“The borehole project is one of our signature initiatives, alongside ‘Sigmas Against the Malaria Epidemic’. This is our sixth or seventh borehole in Ghana, and we continue to identify communities that need potable drinking water,” he stated.
He emphasised that the fraternity, which was founded in 1914, has a deep-rooted history of service, with Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, being inducted as a member in 1941 while studying at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, USA.
“If you don’t know anything about Phi Beta Sigma, you should know that we are a strong brotherhood dedicated to scholarship and service to the communities we belong to,” Amo added.
Expressing appreciation on behalf of the residents, Prince Appietu Appiah, Assembly Member for Attakrom Electoral Area, praised the fraternity for their generosity.
“This mechanised borehole will not only provide water but also promote education because children will no longer have to walk long distances in search of water. It will also enhance sanitation and healthy living in the community,” he noted.
As Phi Beta Sigma Ghana marks its fifth anniversary, fraternity members reaffirmed their commitment to continued service and humanitarian efforts across the country. Plans are already underway for the construction of another borehole in the next seven months, as well as other community-driven initiatives aimed at improving health and education in rural Ghana.

Prof Nana Oppong, a private legal practitioner, has stated that Juliet Asante’s long silence over her sexual harassment claim undermines the credibility of the allegation.
He made this assertion during an interview with GhanaWeb on March 8, 2025, which marked the celebration of International Women’s Day.
Speaking on the injustices women face in the corporate environment, the law professor, condemned the alleged incident of sexual harassment on the actress and former executive secretary of National Film Authority (NFA).
“Sexual harassment is an illness that sins against the dignity and freedom of women; it injures their ability to enjoy work and to excel at their profession.
“I sincerely wish Julie Asante healing. Sexual harassment ought to be frowned upon by every man and woman; and same must be stopped or minimized by law, by equity and justice throughout,” he said.
He, however, added that the fact that the allegation by the actress had not been reported months after the incident, makes it a weak case.
He indicated that staying silent over a wrongful act for a long time can undermine the importance of the matter.
The legal practitioner stated that the absence of credible evidence either in person or in other forms of media to support her case make the issue murky.
“The law always favours the diligent and the wise. This means that in all cases in which a person alleges wrongdoing against another, the accuser must have a persuadable number of things in support his or her case: such as credible witnesses, audio, texts, videos, similar acts and so on.
“Keeping quiet after a wrong has been done undermines credibility. Delays in seeking help or complaining to the authorities after a wrong has been done undermines credibility. Maintaining friendly relations with an alleged wrongdoer after an alleged incident also undermines credibility,” he said.
He further argued that, for every reported case, the burden of proof lies with the accuser.
Therefore, the absence of evidence to support her claim makes her assertion questionable.
“Given that in every case, he who accuses has the burden of proof, everyone accused of a crime is deemed innocent under law, until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law,” he said.
It would be recalled that on March 2, 2025, Juliet Asante, revealed in a congratulatory note to her successor and colleague actress Kafui Danku, that two male bosses at the NFA sexually assaulted her during her tenure in office.
“I remember vividly a day when I was caught between two male bosses. One lifted me up bodily and shoved me into the arms of another, insisting that I give him a hug. The latter hugged me and made the comment ‘maybe, I am the one who will marry you one day’… that night, I scrubbed myself until my skin was tender… I felt dirty,” she revealed in a post on Facebook.

Over the weekend, the Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency, Ralph Poku-Adusei, and his wife, Gloria Poku-Adusei, attended the funeral of Mrs. Joan Kpentey, the mother-in-law of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Akuffo Dampare.
The burial ceremony took place in Vakpo-Todzi, a community in the Volta Region, where family, friends, and dignitaries gathered to pay their last respects.
The Poku-Aduseis joined Dr. Akuffo Dampare and his family in mourning the loss of Mrs. Kpentey, offering their condolences and support during this difficult time.
In a photograph from the event, Ralph Poku-Adusei is seen wearing a black traditional outfit with white accents, while Gloria Poku-Adusei donned an elegant white gown.
They stood alongside the Inspector General of Police, who wore a white shirt.
Prior to entering mainstream politics, Ralph Poku-Adusei, who was elected in December 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), practiced law for over 14 years.
The late Mrs. Joan Kpentey, also known as Joana Semanu Ama Akploekpoe, was born in Jasikan on November 23, 1957. She passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the age of 68.
She is survived by her spouse, Mr. Winfred Kpentey, a retired High Court Judge, three children; Anita, Hilda, and John and sixteen grandchildren, including nine adopted ones.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has stated that the government is deliberately discouraging banks from over-relying on government securities to boost lending to the private sector.
According to him, the government’s decision to reject excess bids from the treasury bill sale is aimed at encouraging banks to provide more credit to businesses.
Speaking during an engagement with the youth on X Spaces with Kalyjay on March 9, 2025, ahead of the presentation of the 2025 budget, he said, “Banks will have to lend to the private sector if we keep rejecting the bids.”
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal stability while creating a conducive environment for private sector growth.
Meanwhile, interest rates on treasury bills declined to 19% in the government’s recent auction on March 7, 2025. This marks the first time in 20 months that rates have dropped below 20%.
The demand for short-term instruments has surged recently, with the government consistently recording over 100% subscription rates.
In the latest auction, the government received bids totaling GH¢10.30 billion but accepted only GH¢6.221 billion, rejecting GH¢4.08 billion in bids.
Auction results released by the Bank of Ghana showed that the 91-day bills saw the highest demand, receiving a total of GH¢6.00 billion in bids.
The 182-day bill received bids worth GH¢2.894 billion, but only GH¢842.61 million was accepted.
Meanwhile, the 364-day bill received bids totaling GH¢1.40 billion, with GH¢947 million accepted.
Interest rates also saw a decline. The 91-day bill rate dropped from 20.79% last week to 17.71%, the 182-day bill fell to 18.96%, and the 364-day bill declined from 22.69% to 19.98%.

Former Black Stars forward Prince Polley has opened up about the heartbreaking loss of the Black Stars in the final of the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
With great players such as Abedi Pele and Anthony Baffoe, the Black Stars were considered one of the tournament favorites.
They lived up to expectations, advancing to the final while defeating giants like Nigeria along the way.
However, Abedi Pele received a yellow card in the semi-final against Nigeria, ruling him out of the final against Ivory Coast. Despite his absence, the Black Stars were still favorites to win the coveted trophy.
Unfortunately, they missed out on the title after losing 10-11 on penalties to Ivory Coast.
According to Polley, the team’s preparations were marred by disagreements over the captaincy, which ultimately cost them the trophy.
Speaking in an interview with Kessben TV, Polley recalled how the decision to appoint Anthony Baffoe as captain for the final over then-assistant captain Anthony Yeboah dampened the team’s spirit.
“What worried us was the final. We all knew that in Abedi Pele’s absence, Tony Yeboah was supposed to be the next captain. But after the squad was announced, the captaincy was given to Tony Baffoe,” he said.
Polley also disclosed how the decision affected Yeboah and the entire team.
“I saw that he was very down and disappointed because he felt disrespected. It had an impact on him, and I believe it even affected the whole squad because the mojo we had going into the match was diminished,” he added.
He further revealed that Yeboah’s frustration led him to refuse the coach’s instructions as the team’s designated penalty taker during the final.
“The coach appointed Yeboah as the penalty taker, but he refused. Imagine someone who didn’t even want to take a penalty playing in the final. That showed how hurt he was, and I believe it affected him deeply,” Polley concluded.

Ghanaians on social media have expressed excitement over the impending scrapping of several nuisance taxes introduced by the erstwhile NPP government in the 2025 budget reading.
Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Constituency, Cassiel Ato Forson, is set to present the first budget of the new NDC government in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
As part of the budget, the new National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is expected to abolish the e-levy, betting tax, covid-19 tax and other similar unpopular taxes that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration forced on Ghanaians.
The NDC campaigned on abolishing all of these taxes and reports indicate the budget is going to do just that.
Reacting to news of the budget abolishing these regressive taxes, social media users have expressed excitement.
One netizen went so far as to predict that such a move would keep the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) out of power for the next 70 years.
“If NDC is able to scrap the Betting Tax, E-levy, COVID-19 and the soft loan tax, it’ll take NPP seventy years to come to power,” the netizen wrote.

Accra, March 10, GNA – Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasised Dr Joseph Boagye Danquah’s significant contributions to Ghana’s political development.
He also called to an end to name-calling and derogatory remarks against the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, a statesman and one of the Big Six in the history of Ghana.
His call follows allegations that Tamale Central MP, Murtala Mohammed, recently referred to Dr. J.B. Danquah as a “traitor” and a “CIA operative” during parliamentary proceedings on February 4, 2025.
This prompted the Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman to petition the Speaker of Parliament on March 7.
Speaking at Dr J. B. Danquah’s 60th Anniversary Remembrance Service at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi, former President Akufo-Addo highlighted Dr Danquah’s persistent advocacy for the rule of law as a fundamental guarantee of liberty and individual freedom, which remained pivotal to Ghana’s political trajectory.
He said Dr Danquah’s persistent call for the rule of law to be entrenched in the country’s body politic was the ultimate guarantee of liberty and individual freedom.
“Today, it stands as a central feature of Ghanaian politics, which we must never renounce,” he stressed.
Former President Akufo-Addo launched a compendium of 60 commemorative statements honouring the legacy of Dr J. B Danquah.
“Despite Dr J. B Danquah’s immense contributions to Ghana’s development, his name continues to be embroiled in needless controversy, both in death as in life,” Akufo-Addo stated.
Meanwhile, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, in an address, condemned the recent derogatory remarks made in Parliament about Dr J. B Danquah.
He also criticised the invasion of the residence of the former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta and urged Ghanaians to reject hate speech and prioritise national unity to promote development.
“Since the 1940s, no group of people has suffered a smear campaign as enduring as that against Daddy Danquah and his people. These are individuals who have contributed immensely to public service and the betterment of our nation, yet, they have been maligned beyond measure for their pure and patriotic sacrifices.
“Let us leave here today with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that democracy is not a gift handed down through history, but a perpetual struggle we must embrace with courage and resolve,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated.
“Let us denounce hate campaigns, regardless of their targets, and put the love and dignity of Ghana and Africa above all differences. What unites us is far greater than the forces seeking to divide and weaken us,” the Minority Leader stressed.

A youth group in the Kassena-Nankana District of the Upper East Region has petitioned the National Vetting Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the exclusion of the only female aspirant from the final list of nominees for the District Chief Executive (DCE) position.
In a petition sighted by GhanaWeb on Monday, March 10, 2025, the group criticised the vetting committee for disregarding the principles of gender equity, despite the party’s commitment to gender empowerment and inclusivity.
“As the only woman among eleven men from various communities in the district, she represents not only gender diversity but also the values of inclusion, empowerment, and leadership within the NDC. The final selection process, however, overlooked the crucial representation of women in governance, despite the party’s commitment to affirmative action and gender balance.
“We, the undersigned, strongly believe that her exclusion is unjust and undermines the principles of fairness and equity,” the petition stated.
The group further noted that her inclusion would inspire confidence in women in the area who may want to venture into politics in the future.
“Ms. Acharibia’s inclusion would serve as a beacon of hope and encouragement for women and young ladies aspiring to actively participate in politics and governance. The decision to exclude her reinforces the notion that women do not go far in politics. By reconsidering her candidature, the NDC can debunk this myth and promote an inclusive political landscape.”
They called on the National Vetting Committee to uphold the principles of fairness, equity, and meritocracy.
“We humbly request that the National Vetting Committee and the leadership of the NDC reconsider her candidacy and give her a fair hearing. Her leadership will not only bring positive transformation to the Kassena-Nankana West District but also inspire many young women across Ghana.
“We trust in your esteemed leadership to address this matter with the fairness and justice it deserves,” it stated.

After spending 19 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, Yaw Appiah, has been acquitted and discharged by the Court of Appeal.
He had been sentenced to prison for 45 years by a High Court in Accra in June 2011, after having spent five years in custody since his arrest in 2006 for a robbery he did not commit.
Neither the complainant in the case had identified Yaw Appiah as one of the persons who robbed him and his family, nor did any of the prosecution witnesses name him as one of the robbers.
Yet, the trial court convicted and sentenced him to 45 years imprisonment in hard labour based on the ‘confession’ of one of the robbers who had claimed that Appiah was part of the gang when they committed the robbery.
In spite of the inconsistencies in the evidence led against him at trial, and the trial judge’s own false claim that Appiah had pleaded guilty to the charges (yet he went through a full trial), the High Court found him guilty of the two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and a substantive charge of robbery and sentenced him to 45 years imprisonment.
Having spent 17 years in prison, a lawyer finally decided to take Yaw Appiah’s case on appeal based on a conviction he was sentenced to prison for a crime he did not commit.
The Court of Appeal granted his lawyer leave to file the appeal out of time following an application to the appellate court.
The appeal, which was finally filed, challenged the trial, conviction and subsequent sentencing of Yaw Appiah.
The appeal argued that the trial judge erred when he failed to consider the defence of Yaw Appiah at the trial, he failed to take into account the period spent in custody prior to his sentencing, and that the judgement is unreasonable and cannot be supported having regard to the evidence on record.
Even the prosecution, in its affidavit, admit that the evidence on record was not sufficient to have merited a conviction of Yaw Appiah, although it claimed that the convict’s cautioned investigative statement was inconsistent with the evidence he led during the trial
Appeal
The Court of Appeal, in its judgement, held that anything at all said by any of the co-accused persons against appellant as long as appellant did not admit of the truth of that statement, was clearly not binding on appellant and no reasonable inference could have been made.
The appellate court said the evidence on record had not met the threshold of reasonable doubt to have merited conviction of the appellant.
“We find that there was no direct evidence that connected the appellant with the crime, and there was also no circumstantial evidence that linked the appellant to the crime for which he was convicted,” Justices Gbiel S. Suurbaareh, Eric Kyei Baffour and Samuel Obeng-Diawuo found.
The Court of Appeal said the trial judge completely misapprehended the evidence that was led by prosecution, and if attention had been paid to the evidence led, appellant would not have been called to open his defence as prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him.
“It is a tragedy that this appellant had been in custody since 2006 for a crime which there was no evidence to link him, and only appealed after seventeen years in custody. It is better late than never and we proceed to do the needful by setting aside the conviction as being erroneous. The judgement of the court below is reversed. The conviction and sentence are set aside. The appeal succeeds,” the Court of Appeal added.
