The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, joined the choir to sing the anthem of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during a dinner held at the residence of the Twafohene of Akyem Abuakwa, to mark the 60th Remembrance Service of Dr. John Boakye Danquah, popularly known as J. B Danquah on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

In a video capturing the moment, Afenyo-Markin was spotted in a jubilant mood, vigorously singing the anthem to the fascination of the audience present.

J.B. Danquah was a key figure in Ghana’s political history who contested Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the April 1960 presidential election, but lost.

On October 3, 1961, he was arrested under the Preventive Detention Act on allegations of plotting to subvert the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and assassinate Dr. Nkrumah.

Although he was released in June 1962, he was later elected President of the Ghana Bar Association.

J.B. Danquah was rearrested in January 1964, without formal charges and was detained at the Nsawam Medium Prison. He died in February 1965 at the age of 69 while still in prison custody.

Following the overthrow of the CPP in February 1966 by the National Liberation Council (NLC), he was buried by the state in recognition of his contributions to the country.

I blew the money from my first major deal in a day – Davido on costly career lesson

0

Nigerian musician, Davido Nigerian musician, Davido

When Davido signed his first major record deal, he thought he had made it.

The Nigerian superstar, fresh off years of recording in makeshift studios with minimal resources, was finally in the big leagues.

But as he revealed on the Drink Champs podcast, monitored by MyNewsGh, the excitement of that moment led him to make one of the biggest financial mistakes of his early career.

“I got my deal, and the money came. I was like, ‘Yo, we lit!’” Davido recalled. “That same day, I took all my boys shopping. We went crazy. We spent it all.”

It wasn’t until later that the reality of the situation hit him—what he had thought was a personal cash-out was actually part of his album budget.

“I called my people like, ‘Yo, when are we starting the album?’ They told me, ‘Bro, you spent your budget,’” he admitted. “That was my first reality check.”

The lesson was harsh, but it reshaped Davido’s approach to the business side of the music industry. After realizing that major deals weren’t just about receiving lump sums of cash but about structured investments in one’s career, he had to rethink how he operated.

From that moment on, Davido understood that success wasn’t just about making music—it was also about making smart financial decisions.

Ghana Enterprises Agency CEO Margaret Ansei unveils plans for women-led businesses

0

Ghana Enterprises Agency CEO Margaret Ansei Ghana Enterprises Agency CEO Margaret Ansei

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Margaret Ansei, has called for a collective commitment to accelerating the growth of women entrepreneurs in Ghana, emphasizing the need for improved market access, financial inclusion, and institutional support.

Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day celebration, held at the forecourt of the GEA, Ansei underscored the importance of empowering women in business under the theme “Accelerating Growth to Empower Women and Expand Markets.”

She stressed that while women entrepreneurs contribute significantly to Ghana’s economy, limited access to sustainable markets remains a major challenge.

To address this, she highlighted GEA’s Business in a Box (BizBox) Project, which includes Ghana Mall, a trade facilitation hub designed to connect women-led businesses to larger markets both locally and internationally.

“This initiative serves as a launchpad for women-owned enterprises, providing them with a structured, well-branded platform to showcase their products, link up with buyers, explore export opportunities, and secure high-value commercial partnerships,” she said.

Ansei also emphasized the need for gender-responsive financial solutions to bridge funding gaps for women entrepreneurs.

She noted that while the GEA has implemented grant schemes, loans, and other financial interventions for women-owned MSMEs, a more sustainable financing model is needed.

To this end, she expressed support for the Government of Ghana’s plan to establish a Women’s Development Bank, which will provide customized financial products, business development services, and capacity-building programs tailored specifically for women entrepreneurs.

“This initiative will redefine women’s access to finance, eliminating barriers such as collateral demands, high-interest rates, and financial exclusion. Instead, it will offer funding solutions designed to support their expansion into high-growth industries,” she added.

The event was graced by high-profile personalities, including the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo; Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey; Members of Parliament for Agona East and Awutu Senya East, Queenstar Pokuaa Sawyer and Phyllis Naa Koryor Okunnor; as well as the National School Feeding Coordinator and her deputy, Hajia Fati Forgor and Madam Faustina Lamptey, respectively.

Also in attendance were the three female members of the Council of State: Ambassador Molly Anim Addo, Madam Evelyn Korang, and Madam Happy Yourself.

Three representatives from the Mastercard Foundation, the main sponsor of the event—Madam Emelia Ayipio Asamoah, Gottfried Odamtten-Sowah, and Joseph Boateng—were also present.

Other notable attendees included the founder of the Ignite Empowerment Initiative, Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku; NEIP Boss, Eric Adjei; Deputy National Service Authority Coordinator, Ruth Dela Seddoh; National Coordinator of Persons with Disabilities, Madam Joyce Gyamfi; Deputy Director of SSNIT, Dr. Benedicta Hoffman; and former Mayor of Cape Coast, Hon. Priscilla Arhin, along with representatives of persons with disabilities.

Ansei called on financial institutions to develop more inclusive financial products, policymakers to simplify regulatory processes for women entrepreneurs, and corporate and development partners to continue investing in skills development, technology, and market expansion.

She urged women entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity to scale their businesses, embrace innovation, and position themselves for both national and global success.

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, let us move beyond words and commit to real, measurable impact. When women succeed, families prosper, communities flourish, and Ghana thrives. Let us accelerate growth—because the time is now!” she concluded.

The celebration, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, brought together captains of industry, government officials, women entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders to discuss actionable strategies for advancing women’s economic empowerment in Ghana.

Week 23 Match Report – Asante Kotoko 2-0 Legon Cities

Kotoko sit at the summit of the league table due to their superior goal difference Kotoko sit at the summit of the league table due to their superior goal difference

Asante Kotoko made a strong return to competitive football with a 2-0 victory over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium, reclaiming the top spot in the Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors are now level on points with Bibiani GoldStars but sit at the summit due to their superior goal difference.

Before kick-off, there was an emotional tribute to the late Nana Pooley, a passionate Kotoko supporter who was tragically stabbed in a recent act of hooliganism.

A minute’s silence was observed, and Kotoko players displayed a banner in his honour.

Despite being out of action for over a month due to the league’s suspension following Pooley’s tragic death, Kotoko showed no signs of rust.

They controlled the game from the start and took the lead in the 29th minute through full-back Patrick Asiedu. He unleashed a brilliant strike from the edge of the box, curling the ball into the bottom left corner, leaving the Legon Cities goalkeeper helpless.

Kotoko continued to dominate but had to wait until the 87th minute to seal the win. Striker Kwame Opoku won a penalty and confidently converted it, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to double their advantage.

Kotoko finished with 71% possession and 11 goal attempts, while Legon Cities struggled to make an impact, failing to register a single shot on target.

The win puts Kotoko back on top of the league, while Legon Cities remain in the relegation zone, still searching for consistency.

Hit-and-run driver who killed two Achimota old students arrested

0

The driver responsible for the fatal accident that claimed the lives of former Achimota students Davida Asante Boateng and Lilian Akorli has been arrested, according to the families of the deceased.

The arrest, which took place on March 7, followed a police chase on the night of the incident. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver failed to stop after hitting the victims, leaving bystanders to rush them to the hospital. They arrived at the medical facility around 12:02 AM.

Davida and Lilian, both members of the Old Achimotan Association (OAA24) and former residents of Stopford House, were returning to the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) after attending a bonfire celebration at Achimota School when the accident occurred along the Achimota Highway.

The tragic loss has plunged the Achimota School community into mourning and sparked renewed calls for improved road safety measures.

Alice Safoa, Davida’s aunt, recounted how the driver was eventually apprehended.

“The incident occurred around 10:30. According to the police, the driver was arrested after a chase. However, the hospital staff revealed that the driver was seeking refuge, fearing an attack by eyewitnesses. Following his arrest, he was taken to the hospital due to ill health but has since recovered and been returned to the police cells.”

Charlotte Otchere, a close friend of Lilian, shared fond memories of their time together.

“She was my classmate and my very good friend. We were in the same class and sat almost close to each other. We had our bad days, but we were okay before we completed,” she said.

On March 8, the Old Achimotan Association 2024 issued a statement confirming the tragic deaths of Lilian and Davida and extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

UT Bank’s License Revoked in Major Move

0

In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s financial sector, the Bank of Ghana has officially revoked the license of UT Bank, effectively shutting down the once-thriving institution.

The central bank, in a letter addressed to UT Bank’s founder, Prince Kofi Amoabeng, cited poor corporate governance, weak capitalization, and failure to meet the minimum capital requirements as the key reasons for this decisive action.

This move comes after months of uncertainty surrounding UT Bank’s future, with financial troubles looming over the institution. Once hailed as one of Ghana’s most innovative banks, UT Bank’s meteoric rise since its founding in 1997 has now come to a stunning and abrupt halt.

Reacting to the shocking development, UT Bank founder Kofi Amoabeng expressed disappointment and disbelief at the Bank of Ghana’s decision. In a statement, he acknowledged the bank’s financial struggles but insisted he was committed to working with authorities to rectify the situation.

However, industry experts believe the writing had long been on the wall. UT Bank’s troubles have been linked to mismanagement and risky lending practices, which eroded investor confidence and weakened the bank’s financial standing.

The collapse of UT Bank has sparked concerns about regulatory oversight in Ghana’s banking industry, with many questioning whether the Bank of Ghana did enough to prevent the crisis before it spiraled out of control.

In response, the Bank of Ghana has assured the public that this move is part of a broader effort to clean up the banking sector and enforce strict financial discipline.

While UT Bank’s downfall marks a sad chapter for Ghana’s financial industry, experts believe it serves as a wake-up call for stricter corporate governance and better regulatory enforcement to prevent future banking crises.

With UT Bank’s operations now halted, attention shifts to what Kofi Amoabeng’s next move will be and how customers, employees, and stakeholders will navigate the fallout from this unexpected financial shake-up.

Telecel Ghana holds ‘Accelerate HER Future’ mentorship session

0

As part of a series of activities to celebrate International Women’s Month this March, Telecel Ghana and Telecel Ghana Foundation have organised the ‘Accelerate HER Future’ mentorship initiative, where female employees shared career experiences to guide and motivate over 200 young girls from the Kanda Cluster of Schools in Accra.

The initiative, aimed at exposing girls in junior high schools to diverse career choices, saw female professionals from technology, legal and external affairs, marketing, commercial operations, human resources, digital transformation, finance and consumer business units share invaluable insights and personal experiences into their careers and the opportunities that exist within these fields.

Hosted at the Rev. Dr Nantoma Presbyterian Church in Kanda, the sessions focused on personal career journeys, daily responsibilities in their respective roles, breaking down gender barriers and equipping the young girls with the confidence and knowledge to pursue their dreams in these fields.

The junior high school pupils were drawn from three schools in the Kanda Cluster, namely Kanda Estate 2 & 3 Basic School, Ring Road East 1 Basic School and Kanda A.M.A Basic School.

In her opening remarks, the Director of Legal and External Affairs at Telecel Ghana, Augusta Akushika Andrews, said the overarching goal was to create a future where women, especially young girls, realise their full potential and excel in every career they pursue.

“Be brave, be bold, be assertive and be yourself. Never give up on your dreams. If you learn consistently and believe in your strength and potential, you can achieve everything you put your mind to,” she said.

Mentorship

The ‘Accelerate HER Future’ mentorship initiative is an essential part of Telecel Ghana’s broader International Women’s Month campaign on the tailored theme, Accelerate HER.

The campaign seeks to amplify the voices of women, tackle gender biases and stereotypes, and support young girls in realising their potential.

Advise

One of the mentors, Veronica Da-Silva, an enterprise service operations manager in the technology department, in her session with the young girls, advised them to take their information technology studies seriously and embrace learning opportunities in the field.

“When I was your age, I didn’t have any role models in technology or women to inspire me to pursue a career in this field.

Being here with you today is fulfilling for me because I want you to be inspired and motivated by my journey and learn some lessons to help shape your careers
positively,” she said.

The initiative also received strong support from local authorities. Municipal Director of Education for Ayawaso East, Dr William Tsekpo said the mentorship sessions for young girls were crucial in improving their academic seriousness and molding them into responsible professionals in future.

She said “the mentorship sessions from Telecel Ghana’s corporate professionals have given the young girls the needed boost to visualise their futures and learn harder to be responsible citizens like these mentors.

I believe this mentorship push, when done consistently, will motivate them to learn more and rise to the top of their dream careers.”

Buy A Math-Set for HER

In addition to the mentorship sessions, the pupils were gifted stationery kits including a mathematical set, pack of writing books and Telecel branded souvenirs.

This is a result of the “Buy A Math-Set for HER” crowdfunding efforts by Telecel Ghana’s employees to raise money and purchase math-sets and other stationery for girls in schools.

Firdaus Mohammed, a 16-year-old student at the Kanda Cluster of Schools, expressed her gratitude to the mentors and said she is considering combining marketing and her dream career, journalism based on the exciting session she had.

“Before today, I wanted to be a journalist but after the sessions, I want to add digital technology and marketing to enrich it,” Firdaus said, holding up her new mathematical set and other stationery. “It was a very helpful and interesting discussion that has inspired me to learn and stay focused.”

Sunday prayer cancelled for fourth time as pope lies in hospital

0

Rome, Mar. 9, (dpa/GNA) – The Vatican has cancelled the traditional Sunday prayer on St Peter’s Square for the fourth time in a row as Pope Francis lies ill in hospital with severe pneumonia.

Francis had spent a “quiet” night in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and was resting, the Vatican said.

Late on Saturday, the Holy See reported “gradual improvement” in the 88-year-old’s condition.

“The Holy Father’s clinical condition has remained stable over recent days and is thus showing a good response to the therapy,” it said. Francis did not have a fever, it added. The next bulletin is expected on Monday evening.

The pope’s health has suffered a number of setbacks since he was admitted to the Gemelli on February 14 for what was initially reported to be a case of bronchitis.

Double pneumonia was later diagnosed and he has repeatedly been put on a ventilation machine.

Francis is now the second-oldest pope in history. Thursday marks the 12th anniversary since he was elected to succeed Benedict XVI, who resigned at the age of 85 but lived to be 95.

Ofori-Atta breaks silence on OSP’s probe of him

0

Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta

Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has spoken out about the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) criminal probe into him, expressing his displeasure with recent developments.

In an open letter dated February 26, Mr. Ofori-Atta sought to correct the record, describing the situation as both perplexing and upsetting.

His response follows a wanted notice issued against him by the OSP, which was later withdrawn.

According to the OSP, the investigation focused on several financial transactions, including the Strategic Mobilization-GRA contract, the termination of the ECG-BXC contract, payments for the National Cathedral, ambulance purchases, and the use of the Tax Refund Account.

Subsequently, the OSP confirmed that Mr. Ofori-Atta had officially communicated his intention to return voluntarily. As a result, he was removed from the wanted list, though the office cautioned that failure to return as promised would result in further legal action.

Reflecting on the situation, Mr. Ofori-Atta expressed his confusion about the unfolding events.

“I have been in the news recently in quite a dramatic manner. I thought it important to share with you the facts surrounding recent events and news articles concerning me and Ghana’s Special Prosecutor. I am as puzzled and dismayed as I suspect you must be.

“I was out of the country on January 24 for medical reasons when the Special Prosecutor invited me to an in-person meeting on February 10, 2025, in connection with four ‘corruption and corruption-related cases.’ I was neither the originating nor the implementing Minister in any of these portfolios. I immediately responded through my lawyers, indicating my willingness to have them provide any information required for the investigation, given that I would be out of the country for the next few months for medical reasons,” a report by citinewsroom.com quotes Ofori-Atta as saying.

He added, “The Special Prosecutor rejected the offer to meet with my lawyers, insisting on a firm date for my personal attendance. Instead, on February 11, my home was raided by armed National Security operatives. The Special Prosecutor remarked that I had staged the raid on my own home and subsequently launched an international campaign, declaring that I was a wanted ‘fugitive from justice.’”

Samira Bawumia’s Love for Kente Inspires Ghanaian Weavers During Heritage Month

0

As Ghana marks Heritage Month this March, kente weavers are celebrating Second Lady Samira Bawumia for her unwavering support of locally-made fabrics. Her frequent choice of kente, a traditional Ghanaian handwoven cloth, has not only made her a fashion icon but also a champion of indigenous craftsmanship.

Kente, a symbol of Ghanaian culture, pride, and royalty, has seen renewed interest thanks to Mrs. Bawumia’s elegant displays at both local and international events. Weavers from Bonwire, Kpetoe, and Agotime, renowned for their kente-making skills, have praised her for boosting the fabric’s popularity. Kwabena Boateng, a master weaver from Bonwire, shared, “When people see her wearing kente, they want to buy it too. This has increased demand for our work.”

Heritage Month is a time to honor Ghana’s cultural heritage, and Mrs. Bawumia’s actions align perfectly with this goal. By choosing Ghanaian-made fabrics over foreign brands, she has sparked conversations about the importance of supporting local industries. Her influence is not just about fashion; it’s about economic empowerment for artisans and preserving traditional crafts.

Social media users have also applauded her for setting a powerful example. Many see her as a role model who is reshaping perceptions of Ghanaian fashion, making it a symbol of sophistication and national pride.

As the celebrations continue, kente weavers hope more Ghanaians will follow her lead. By embracing locally-made products, they believe the nation can sustain its cultural heritage while creating opportunities for artisans across the country. Samira Bawumia’s love for kente is more than a style statement—it’s a call to action for all Ghanaians to take pride in their roots.

IMANI-Africa calls for enhanced security for Special Prosecutor

0

Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President and Policy Analyst at IMANI Africa, has called for enhanced security measures for Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng and his staff to enable them to combat corruption without fear.

His call follows a speech by Agyebeng at the Constitution Day Lecture in Accra, where he expressed concerns over security threats faced by himself and his team, revealing the personal risks associated with his role.

“My security risk is ultra-high. And I have to perpetually be on the lookout for attacks on my person. The same applies especially to the operational officers of the OSP,” he said.

“The job is thankless. It fetches you droves of enemies daily. It brings you into frontal contact with the lowest forms of debasement in humans. You do not go asking for it. It finds you. That is the nature of the job.”

Speaking during a panel discussion on News File on Joy FM, Bentil emphasized the need for greater support and protection for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), given the dangers that come with its mandate.

“We all want change, but nobody wants to change. We should take care of them [the OSP],” he urged.

He also highlighted the need for a comprehensive Corrupt Practices Act to clearly define and address corruption-related offences. According to Bentil, Ghana’s laws must be more stringent to effectively tackle corruption and prescribe appropriate punishments.

Although the OSP faces significant challenges, Bentil described Agyebeng “a resilient individual who is well-suited for the job.”

He further advocated for greater independence for the OSP, suggesting that it should handle all prosecutions instead of the Attorney General’s Department to minimize political interference.

“I am pushing hard for all prosecutions to go to that office instead of the Attorney General’s, which is political. They end up appointing non-prosecutors,” he said.

“If all the prosecutions we have seen handled by non-prosecutors were under the Special Prosecutor’s office, a change of government would not affect much. That office is useful. We may even need to expand it.”

Dr. Thomas Anaba, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Garu and a former Medical Director at Ridge Hospital, criticized what he described as a lack of genuine commitment by the country’s leadership to fight corruption.

“The leadership of the country sets up anti-corruption agencies as a smokescreen. That is how I see it. So that behind it, they are doing what they want.”

“You occupy an office, and in the end, you either agree with them, or they deal with you,” he lamented.

Dr. Anaba noted that Ghana loses billions of dollars to corruption annually, yet the OSP operates with limited resources, making it difficult to confront well-connected individuals engaging in corrupt practices.

Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Walewale, acknowledged the structural limitations of the OSP within Ghana’s democratic framework.

“Unfortunately for the OSP, we are practising a very democratic regime, where the rights of individuals, even those with criminal intent, must be fully litigated,” he said.

“So, when he comes off as someone facing that kind of opposition, I understand why he should be concerned.”

Dr. Mahama added that any threat to the Special Prosecutor’s life was a threat to Ghana’s stability and political development, urging collective support for the OSP’s mission.

The panellists concluded on the need for stronger legislation, increased security for the Special Prosecutor, and sustained public commitment to combating corruption in Ghana.

Mbappe scores as Real Madrid beat Rayo Vallecano to go joint top

0

Real Madrid moved level on points with leaders Barcelona after they narrowly beat Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.

Two goals in four minutes gave the hosts a comfortable first-half lead.

Kylian Mbappe cut inside and slotted into the bottom corner, before Vinicius Jr produced a near-identical finish, via a slight deflection off visiting defender Andrei Ratiu.

Pedro Diaz fired in off the crossbar, for his first Rayo Vallecano goal, in first-half stoppage time to halve the deficit.

Jude Bellingham made his return from a two-game La Liga suspension but was withdrawn late on after falling awkwardly.

The result means Barcelona remain top, with a game in hand, while Real are second on goal difference.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side travel to city rivals Atletico Madrid on Wednesday for the second leg of their last-16 Champions League encounter.

Atleti missed the chance to go top of La Liga earlier on Sunday when the third-placed side fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Getafe.

They led 1-0 through an Alexander Sorloth penalty, but had Angel Correa sent off in the 88th minute and Mauro Arambarri scored twice in the final two minutes for the hosts.

In less than 5 weeks, Sam George has so much to sponsor an event of his wife

0

Popular writer affiliated with the opposition New Patriotic Party P.K Sarpong has expressed concern about how Sam George was able to raise revenue to sponsor his wife’s event barely five weeks after his appointment.

His criticism comes after Sam Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations addressed the concerns about a recent event held by his foundation.

An event by the Dzata Foundation led by Vera George, spouse of Ghana’s Minster for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has subjected the politician to significant backlash online.

The event which had MTN as a partner stoked several criticisms about conflict of interest.

The new minister has dismissed the claims tagging them as “most unfortunate and reprehensible. He took to social media platforms to admit that the event was fully funded by him.

Reacting to the development, P.K Sarpong questioned where Sam George got the funds from to sponsor such an event most especially when he admitted during his vetting that his wife takes care of him.

When asked by the Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, whether he had any sources of income aside from his parliamentary salary, Sam George responded with a candid and lighthearted statement.

On the heels of Sam George’s pronouncement about his sources of income during his vetting, P.K Sarpong is concerned about how he could raise revenue to sponsor his wife’s event.

In a Facebook post, he wrote, “In less than 5 weeks of appointment, Sam George has so much to sponsor his wife’s event when before appointment his wife was taking care of him. The 7th Wonder of the world is more like it.”

A renowned herbal doctor, Prof Wiafe Akenteng, has advocated for people to make it a habit of undergoing thorough lab tests at least once in a year so that they are able to confirm or not if they have any forms of illnesses in them or not.

He explained that this is particularly important because there are many times that people get surprised with sicknesses that they never imagined they had.

“There are many people who are sick and do not even know it. So, in order for doctors to diagnose them and ensure that these do not spread or become worse, that is why people must have regular checkups.

“And there are various drugs that the FDA has approved that we can give out to them to help them get better. Today, our hope is that people conduct lab tests at least once a year so that we can check for sicknesses like prostate, syphilis, typhoid, malaria, HIV, Hepatitis B, among others,” he stated.

Prof Wiafe Akenteng, who is also the Founder of Natural Way Herbal Clinic, said this during a free Independence Day health screening event organised at Santa Maria for some several hundreds of people.

Explaining why he organises this exercise annually, Dr. Wiafe said that, “These days, one of the most common diseases in Ghana is high BP and diabetes. Hepatitis B is another one and then HIV, which can even be contracted from barbering shops. All of these make it necessary for people to get checked medically, and very often.”

As part of the event, free food and various fruits from the forest were given to everyone.

He also used the opportunity to educate the beneficiaries on natural healing teachings as a way of “showcasing the essence of good health and in the spirit of Ghana Month too.”

NPP's General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has called for an end to the victimisation of journalists by politicians.

According to him, politicians must uphold the liberties and rights of journalists because journalism in Ghana should transcend partisan lines.

Justin Kodua made the call at a Thanksgiving service and Get-together meeting of the Ashanti Region Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) on Friday.

The event was attended by the media fraternity, personnel from security agencies, traditional leaders, and members from the various political divides.

It was chaired by the chief of Kwabre Kenyasi, Barima Fredua Agyemang Ababio, and graced by the Ashanti Regional minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.

Kodua’s statement is a significant development, given the crucial role journalists play in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

His call to action demonstrates his commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and press freedom.

The NPP General Secretary also appealed to journalists to prioritise truth in their reporting and resist the influence of monetary gains.

He said ethical journalism is essential in maintaining the integrity of the media and promoting a well-informed public.

The Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Kingsley Hope, in his speech, demanded the arrest and prosecution of some thugs who attacked journalists at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) recently.

The unfortunate incident happened during the Council of State election in Kumasi on March 10, 2025.

He stated that those involved should not be allowed to go unpunished, to serve as a deterrent to other people who see journalists as a “nuisance”.

Kingsley encouraged journalists by stating, “No journalist should ever have to fear while doing his/her job. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who have been assaulted, and we demand that those responsible be held accountable.”

The chief of Kwabre Kenyasi, Barima Fredua Agyemang Ababio, who chaired the occasion, emphasised the importance of fact-checking in journalism during a speech.

He urged journalists in Ghana to verify information before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation and promote peace among the people.

When CJN Lectured IG on Rule of Law – THISDAYLIVE

0

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun and his team got more than they bargained for during their recent courtesy visit to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun in Abuja.

In her remarks, the CJN lectured them extensively like law enforcers who do not understand their jobs.

First, the CJN called on them and other sister security agencies in the country to ensure full compliance with court orders and to respect human rights.

She expressed concern over the growing trend of non-compliance to court orders by some law enforcement agencies, noting that such acts undermine the integrity of the justice system and weaken public confidence.

Justice Kekere-Ekun also identified poor investigative processes, lack of thorough case preparation, and delays in prosecution as key factors contributing to prolonged trials and prison congestion in the country. She advised the police and related agencies to complete investigations before filing charges, to prevent cases from being struck out due to insufficient evidence.

The CJN emphasised that the rule of law requires strict adherence to judicial decisions, stating that disobedience to court orders erodes public trust in both law enforcement and the judiciary.

She also urged the IG to issue clear directives to ensure that court judgments and orders are respected and promptly implemented.

She further stressed the importance of adherence to the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, particularly provisions prohibiting arrest in lieu, inhumane treatment of suspects, and the mandatory electronic recording of confessional statements. She reminded the police that under Section 7 of the ACJA, it is illegal to arrest family members or associates in place of a suspect.

Additionally, the CJN called for internal disciplinary measures within the Nigeria Police Force to ensure personnel do not engage in unlawful practices.

She urged the IG to implement mechanisms to monitor and prevent police brutality, ensuring that officers who violate the law are held accountable.

It is hoped that the police and other law enforcement agencies will utilise the advice of the CJN to do their jobs professionally and effectively.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Ghana is highlighting the transformative power of women entrepreneurship, particularly in the green technology sector.

President John Dramani Mahama met with Valerie Labi, co-founder of Wahu Mobility, and Abena Baidoo, the company’s CFO, to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to supporting women-led innovation and driving sustainable economic development.

Wahu Mobility, a pioneering force in Ghana’s electric mobility sector, is manufacturing e-bikes and soon-to-be-launched electric Okadas, paving the way for a greener transportation future. I’m ‘puzzled and dismayed’ – Ofori-Atta reacts to OSP investigation

0

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has broken his silence on the legal issues surrounding him, expressing frustration over recent developments with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

In an open letter dated February 26, Mr. Ofori-Atta described the situation as both confusing and distressing, stating that he felt the need to set the record straight.

His reaction follows an OSP-issued wanted notice against him, which was later revoked. The investigation, according to the OSP, focused on various financial dealings, including the Strategic Mobilisation-GRA Contract, ECG-BXC contract termination, payments related to the National Cathedral, procurement of ambulances, and the use of the Tax Refund Account.

Amid growing public scrutiny, the OSP later confirmed that Mr. Ofori-Atta had officially communicated plans to return voluntarily. As a result, he was removed from the wanted list, though the office cautioned that failure to return as promised would result in further legal action.

Reflecting on the situation, Mr. Ofori-Atta expressed his bewilderment at the unfolding events.

“I have been in the news recently in quite a dramatic manner. I thought it important that I share with you the facts surrounding recent events and news articles concerning me and Ghana’s Special Prosecutor. I am as puzzled and dismayed, as I suspect you must be.

“I was out of the country on January 24, for medical reasons, when the Special Prosecutor invited me to an in-person meeting for Feb 10, 2025, in connection with four “corruption and corruption related cases”. I was not the originating nor implementing Minister in any of these portfolios. I immediately responded through my lawyers, indicating my willingness to have them provide him with any information he may require to aid in his investigation, given that I will be out of the country for the next few months for medical reasons.

“The Special Prosecutor rejected the offer to meet with my lawyers, insisting on a firm date for my personal attendance. Instead on February 11th, my home was raided by armed National Security operatives. The Special Prosecutor remarked that I had staged the raid on my own home and, subsequently, launched an international campaign and declared that I was a wanted “fugitive from justice”

Ghana wraps up U-16 Development Tournament with dominant victory over Latvia

0

Ghana concluded their UEFA U-16 Development Tournament in an emphatic fashion, securing a dominant 7-1 victory over Latvia in a thrilling encounter. The Black Damsels showcased their attacking prowess and teamwork, leaving no doubt about their superiority on the pitch.

Ghana started the match with high intensity and quickly asserted their dominance. The opening goal came from Seidatu Wahab, who displayed excellent composure in front of goal to put Ghana ahead. Wahab wasn’t done yet, as she doubled her tally shortly after, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Latvia to make it 2-0.

The third goal of the half was scored by Daniella Abass, who added her name to the scoresheet with a well-taken finish. Ghana’s attacking trio of Wahab, Abass, and their teammates constantly pressured Latvia’s defense, leaving the Baltic side struggling to cope. By halftime, Ghana held a commanding 3-0 lead.

The second half saw no let-up from Ghana as they continued to dominate proceedings. Christiana Ashiaku emerged as a key figure, scoring two quick goals to extend Ghana’s lead to 5-0.

Seidatu Wahab completed her hat-trick with another well-taken goal. The scoring was rounded off by Mavis Koah, who added the seventh goal with a composed finish, capping off a brilliant team performance.

Latvia managed to pull one back late in the game, but it was little more than a consolation as Ghana’s defense remained largely untroubled throughout the match.

A member of the DWP group, Lisa Quama, has confirmed the narrative on social media about her style of dressing.

In an interview on ‘The Delay Show’ on March 8, 2025, Lisa Quama, who a point, refused to embrace the label of a tomboy, eventually accepted the narrative after being repeatedly pushed by Delay.

“I don’t want to say yes… I will never be a boy because I am a girl. I am not dressing like a boy… You know what I am a tomboy. I have accepted that I am a tomboy,” she said.

The dancer however debunked the narrative that she is a lesbian.

According to her, dressing like a boy does not make one a lesbian.

“I am not a lesbian. That is the sexual narrative but a tomboy is someone comfortable in male clothes. Yes! I love men with all my heart,” she added.
