When CJN Lectured IG on Rule of Law – THISDAYLIVE

0

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun and his team got more than they bargained for during their recent courtesy visit to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun in Abuja.

In her remarks, the CJN lectured them extensively like law enforcers who do not understand their jobs.

First, the CJN called on them and other sister security agencies in the country to ensure full compliance with court orders and to respect human rights.

She expressed concern over the growing trend of non-compliance to court orders by some law enforcement agencies, noting that such acts undermine the integrity of the justice system and weaken public confidence.

Justice Kekere-Ekun also identified poor investigative processes, lack of thorough case preparation, and delays in prosecution as key factors contributing to prolonged trials and prison congestion in the country. She advised the police and related agencies to complete investigations before filing charges, to prevent cases from being struck out due to insufficient evidence.

The CJN emphasised that the rule of law requires strict adherence to judicial decisions, stating that disobedience to court orders erodes public trust in both law enforcement and the judiciary.

She also urged the IG to issue clear directives to ensure that court judgments and orders are respected and promptly implemented.

She further stressed the importance of adherence to the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, particularly provisions prohibiting arrest in lieu, inhumane treatment of suspects, and the mandatory electronic recording of confessional statements. She reminded the police that under Section 7 of the ACJA, it is illegal to arrest family members or associates in place of a suspect.

Additionally, the CJN called for internal disciplinary measures within the Nigeria Police Force to ensure personnel do not engage in unlawful practices.

She urged the IG to implement mechanisms to monitor and prevent police brutality, ensuring that officers who violate the law are held accountable.

It is hoped that the police and other law enforcement agencies will utilise the advice of the CJN to do their jobs professionally and effectively.

0

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Ghana is highlighting the transformative power of women entrepreneurship, particularly in the green technology sector.

President John Dramani Mahama met with Valerie Labi, co-founder of Wahu Mobility, and Abena Baidoo, the company’s CFO, to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to supporting women-led innovation and driving sustainable economic development.

Wahu Mobility, a pioneering force in Ghana’s electric mobility sector, is manufacturing e-bikes and soon-to-be-launched electric Okadas, paving the way for a greener transportation future. The company has generated over 500 jobs in the past year alone, providing opportunities for delivery personnel, engineers, and other skilled workers.

President Mahama’s commitment to supporting women entrepreneurs aligns with the ‘Accelerate Action’ theme of International Women’s Day. His administration’s proactive measures, including the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank and the endorsement of electric 2-wheelers, are paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for women entrepreneurs in Ghana.

Empowering women entrepreneurs is not just a matter of social justice, but a strategic imperative for economic growth. Wahu Mobility is a prime example of how women-led businesses can drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for Ghana.

As Ghana celebrates International Women’s Day, the country is sending a clear message: accelerating action for women entrepreneurs is accelerating action for a stronger, more equitable, and environmentally conscious nation. President Mahama’s engagement with Wahu Mobility highlights the critical role women are playing in driving innovation and economic growth in Ghana.

I’m ‘puzzled and dismayed’ – Ofori-Atta reacts to OSP investigation

0

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has broken his silence on the legal issues surrounding him, expressing frustration over recent developments with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

In an open letter dated February 26, Mr. Ofori-Atta described the situation as both confusing and distressing, stating that he felt the need to set the record straight.

His reaction follows an OSP-issued wanted notice against him, which was later revoked. The investigation, according to the OSP, focused on various financial dealings, including the Strategic Mobilisation-GRA Contract, ECG-BXC contract termination, payments related to the National Cathedral, procurement of ambulances, and the use of the Tax Refund Account.

Amid growing public scrutiny, the OSP later confirmed that Mr. Ofori-Atta had officially communicated plans to return voluntarily. As a result, he was removed from the wanted list, though the office cautioned that failure to return as promised would result in further legal action.

Reflecting on the situation, Mr. Ofori-Atta expressed his bewilderment at the unfolding events.

“I have been in the news recently in quite a dramatic manner. I thought it important that I share with you the facts surrounding recent events and news articles concerning me and Ghana’s Special Prosecutor. I am as puzzled and dismayed, as I suspect you must be.

“I was out of the country on January 24, for medical reasons, when the Special Prosecutor invited me to an in-person meeting for Feb 10, 2025, in connection with four “corruption and corruption related cases”. I was not the originating nor implementing Minister in any of these portfolios. I immediately responded through my lawyers, indicating my willingness to have them provide him with any information he may require to aid in his investigation, given that I will be out of the country for the next few months for medical reasons.

“The Special Prosecutor rejected the offer to meet with my lawyers, insisting on a firm date for my personal attendance. Instead on February 11th, my home was raided by armed National Security operatives. The Special Prosecutor remarked that I had staged the raid on my own home and, subsequently, launched an international campaign and declared that I was a wanted “fugitive from justice”

Ghana wraps up U-16 Development Tournament with dominant victory over Latvia

0

Ghana concluded their UEFA U-16 Development Tournament in an emphatic fashion, securing a dominant 7-1 victory over Latvia in a thrilling encounter. The Black Damsels showcased their attacking prowess and teamwork, leaving no doubt about their superiority on the pitch.

Ghana started the match with high intensity and quickly asserted their dominance. The opening goal came from Seidatu Wahab, who displayed excellent composure in front of goal to put Ghana ahead. Wahab wasn’t done yet, as she doubled her tally shortly after, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Latvia to make it 2-0.

The third goal of the half was scored by Daniella Abass, who added her name to the scoresheet with a well-taken finish. Ghana’s attacking trio of Wahab, Abass, and their teammates constantly pressured Latvia’s defense, leaving the Baltic side struggling to cope. By halftime, Ghana held a commanding 3-0 lead.

The second half saw no let-up from Ghana as they continued to dominate proceedings. Christiana Ashiaku emerged as a key figure, scoring two quick goals to extend Ghana’s lead to 5-0.

Seidatu Wahab completed her hat-trick with another well-taken goal. The scoring was rounded off by Mavis Koah, who added the seventh goal with a composed finish, capping off a brilliant team performance.

Latvia managed to pull one back late in the game, but it was little more than a consolation as Ghana’s defense remained largely untroubled throughout the match.

A member of the DWP group, Lisa Quama, has confirmed the narrative on social media about her style of dressing.

In an interview on ‘The Delay Show’ on March 8, 2025, Lisa Quama, who a point, refused to embrace the label of a tomboy, eventually accepted the narrative after being repeatedly pushed by Delay.

“I don’t want to say yes… I will never be a boy because I am a girl. I am not dressing like a boy… You know what I am a tomboy. I have accepted that I am a tomboy,” she said.

The dancer however debunked the narrative that she is a lesbian.

According to her, dressing like a boy does not make one a lesbian.

“I am not a lesbian. That is the sexual narrative but a tomboy is someone comfortable in male clothes. Yes! I love men with all my heart,” she added.
