GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has urged Premier League club representatives to apply the knowledge gained from the FIFA Club Professionalisation and Management workshop, which concluded on March 5, 2025.

Speaking at the closing ceremony at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, he thanked FIFA for supporting Ghanaian football development and emphasised the importance of continuous learning. He recalled his 2019 visit to Zurich, where he discussed empowering African football through knowledge-sharing with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“This training at our doorstep is a blessing. Seeking knowledge should be a key part of our journey. FIFA, bring us more,” Mr. Okraku said

The workshop covered key areas such as club operations, stadium management, finance, marketing, governance, and leadership. It aimed to strengthen the professional and administrative capacities of Ghanaian clubs.

Led by FIFA experts, including Solomon Mudege and Pedro Manuel Correia Miranda, the initiative is part of FIFA’s collaboration with the GFA to enhance football management in Ghana and prepare clubs for domestic and international competitions.

After years of struggle for freedom, Ghana declared independence on March 6, 1957. On that day, people went to sleep in the British colony of Gold Coast and woke up in a free and independent country — Ghana.

The first prime minister of the young state was the famous Ghanaian politician Kwame Nkrumah, who was elected the country’s first president three years later.

Independence Day is a memorable holiday, as it was the day when Ghanaians finally threw off the shackles of the colonial empire and chose an independent path to development. Ghana’s Independence Day is also of great importance for 1xBet.

This international brand strives to find an individual approach to people in each region where it has a presence. For example, a unique Dreams Come True promotion was recently held in Ghana, during which each participant got a chance to fulfill a cherished wish.

To take part in the promo, you simply had to share your most desired dream in the comments to the promotion post on 1xBet’s social networks. First, the 1xBet team selected the most inspiring stories, the realization of which could change participants’ lives.

After all, the company supports not only athletes but also all people who are sincerely ready to pursue their goals!

In 2024, 1xBet covered all sports competitions important to Africans, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the Paris Olympics. Accelerate action: Ghana champions women entrepreneurship in electric mobility on International Women’s Day

0

In the spirit of International Women’s Day 2025, and its resonant theme of ‘Accelerate Action’, Ghana is shining a spotlight on the transformative power of women entrepreneurship, particularly in the burgeoning green technology sector.

Echoing the global call for rapid advancements in gender equality, Ghana is recognizing and enacting strategies to drive women’s progress in employment, education and leadership.

Earlier this week, President John Dramani Mahama met with Valerie Labi, co-founder of Wahu Mobility, and Abena Baidoo, the company’s Chief Finance Officer, to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to supporting women-led innovation and driving sustainable economic development.

Wahu Mobility, a pioneering force in Ghana’s electric mobility sector, is manufacturing e-bikes and soon-to-be-launched electric Okadas, paving the way for a greener transportation future.

President Mahama underscored his unwavering support for women entrepreneurs, pledging to foster their growth and create a conducive regulatory environment for green technology to flourish. This commitment directly addresses the ‘Accelerate Action’ theme, recognizing that proactive government support is crucial to unlocking the potential of women in business.

Valerie Labi, a passionate advocate for youth employment, has demonstrated the profound impact women entrepreneurs can have on job creation.

Wahu Mobility has generated over 500 jobs in the past year alone, providing opportunities for delivery personnel, engineers, and other skilled workers. This achievement showcases the entrepreneurial might of Ghanaian women and their ability to drive economic growth.

With the backing of the government, Labi’s ambitious vision of establishing a green 24-hour electric vehicle zone in the heart of Accra is poised to create over 200,000 jobs in the next five years. This initiative aligns perfectly with President Mahama’s broader agenda, which includes the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank, the Big Push for improved road infrastructure, and the endorsement of electric 2-wheelers.

These initiatives collectively work to comprehensively develop and realign professionally, supporting innovative startups and propelling Ghana towards a sustainable, green economy.

Empowering women entrepreneurs is not just a matter of social justice, it’s a strategic imperative for economic growth. Wahu Mobility is a prime example of how women-led businesses can drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for Ghana.

President Mahama’s engagement with Wahu Mobility highlights the critical role women are playing in driving innovation and economic growth in Ghana. His administration’s proactive measures are paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future, where women entrepreneurs can thrive and lead the charge towards a sustainable, green economy.

This International Women’s Day, Ghana is sending a clear message: accelerating action for women entrepreneurs is accelerating action for a stronger, more equitable, and environmentally conscious nation.

Wahu Mobility is dedicated to providing sustainable and accessible transportation solutions tailored to Africa’s unique terrain and challenges. The company offers a range of electric bicycles designed and manufactured locally, empowering riders with cost-effective and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

I walk to the minster’s office but no one asks me a question, because they are watching..

0

According to GhanaWeb, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), has expressed serious concerns regarding public sector employees watching inappropriate content during work hours instead of concentrating on their duties.

In an interview with Channel One TV on March 5, 2025, he criticized the presence of televisions in government offices, highlighting that he often walks through corridors to find officials distracted by soap operas and other unsuitable programs.

He pointed out that these shows often feature scantily clad individuals, making it inappropriate for daytime viewing.

Thompson labeled the existence of televisions in public offices as a clear indication of a lack of seriousness in the country.

“I go to places and I walk through the corridor straight to the minister’s office and no one asks me a question, because they are watching a soap opera… it’s not just soap opera but soft porn; given that these telenovelas show people going about half naked and it’s at around 10 am in the morning,” he decried.

He argued that such distractions significantly hinder productivity and called for immediate measures to eliminate televisions from government workplaces.

Additionally, he recommended that the use of personal mobile phones, especially by frontline workers, should be scrutinized, as many individuals spend work hours on social media rather than focusing on their responsibilities.

Thompson asserted that frontline staff should refrain from using their phones during work hours, suggesting they turn them off upon arrival.

He emphasized the need for a contact number for emergencies, advocating for a strict policy against engaging in non-work-related activities during official hours.

Man jailed for stealing laptop at Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment

An unemployed man who stole a laptop from the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Foster Nyarko, a 36-year-old man, went to the Ministry seeking a cleaning job.

He pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing a laptop valued at GHC24,745 before an Accra Circuit Court.

The court presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, sentenced Nyarko to one year for unlawful entry and two years for stealing. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The prosecution revealed that Nyarko had previously been jailed for stealing a mobile phone at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice earlier this year while on a job hunt.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, a lawyer at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, reported the theft, stating that Nyarko, who resides at Opera Square in Accra, visited the Ministry on December 4, 2024, in search of a cleaning job.

He was directed to see the Human Resource Director but instead proceeded to the second floor, where he entered the office of the Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation.

Upon finding the office unoccupied, Nyarko took advantage of the situation and stole an HP laptop computer valued at GHC24,745, further concealed the laptop in his backpack and left the premises.

Investigations led to Nyarko’s arrest, and he admitted to the offence. He confessed to selling the stolen laptop to an unidentified person in Takoradi.

The story of Accra James Town

0

Jamestown, a popular community in Accra has been a hot bed of political and social activities from the struggle against British colonial rule to date.

The once vibrant community, some have argued, has lost its shine. A resident, Isaac Georges-Mensah says he moved to Jamestown from the Central Region in 1960.

He narrates how bustling and vibrant the community was.

‘’Jamestown was very good. It’s one of the best places to live in Accra here, but the moment they overthrew Kwame Nkrumah things changed entirely.’’

He says a lot of the country’s intellectuals hailed from Jamestown who together with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah valiantly fought for and won Ghana’s independence in 1957.

“If I remember those days, if you talk of this man from Jamestown, yes. But people thought they are vagabonds and those things but that’s a lie. Paa Lutherodt, Black Stars one of the leading players, from Jamestown, Dr. Quarcoopone, Dr. Odoi, and the lawyers thousand and one.’’

Also in Jamestown is the Ussher Fort Prison where Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was imprisoned for about a year. Jamestown was one of the communities in the Accra Central that voted for Dr. Nkrumah to win the parliamentary seat in the 1951 elections.

In spite of its rich political history, there is a debate about whether the town has kept its heritage. Isaac Georges-Mensah who spoke to the news team says the town’s heritage is lost indicating they have lost everything, including factories that kept them going.

‘’Before, we had a slaughterhouse and unfortunately it was broken down, it was demolished by ET Mensah during Rawlings era and they said they were going to build new one, but it was not. Before we have the Elder Dempster Shipping Lines, we have Piccadilly Biscuit Factory, we have Go – Ahead factory, we have so many factories, today none of them, only one factory is alive that is the M and G pharmaceuticals. There is no work here!

Other residents recount, Jamestown, was lit every given Independence Day. But today the story is different particularly with the demolishing of the Sea View Hotel which was the first hotel to be built in Ghana by the British.

‘’So many things were being held there, outdooring, weekend dance and many others…that was where we used to entertain ourselves but we don’t know what happened and the family we learnt sold it to somebody and later on they said they’ve sold it to Latter-Day Saints and it was demolished. Till today, we don’t have anything for entertainment, nothing.” He said.

The residents alleged their leaders have sold everything with just the sea remaining and wonder what they would leave for generations yet to come.

The indigenes say the present Jamestown has lost its shine and the youth also have no interest in education.

Indeed, Jamestown has a rich political history. Even though things might have changed, but some still argue that it remains a political hotbed because during the political season campaign rallies may not be complete without some being organized at the ‘Mantse Agbona’ park, which is in front of the Jamestown Chief’s Palace.

President Mahama has appointed 30 presidential staffers, not 100

0

The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims by the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, that President John Dramani Mahama has appointed 100 presidential staffers.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, March 7, 2025, he clarified that the president has appointed only 30 presidential staffers.

“Everybody who has been appointed as a presidential staffer has been named in a statement signed by me. So, currently, there are 27 presidential staffers. All of them were publicly announced, unlike in the past when we only learned of them when the president submitted a list of presidential staff to Parliament. This time, we went ahead to inform the people of Ghana and left nobody in doubt about the numbers.

“In addition to these 27, three people have been appointed to assist with specific interventions that the president wants to undertake. They are referred to as directors. They do not hold the rank of presidential staffers, so they are described as presidential aides,” he noted.

He continued, “If you add them to the list of staffers, there are just 30 people. Beyond that, no other staffers or presidential aides have been appointed.”

On Wednesday, March 6, 2025, Samuel Abu Jinapor accused President Mahama of failing to uphold his pledge to maintain a lean government, alleging that he had exceeded his promise of appointing only 60 ministers and had instead appointed over 100 staffers at the Presidency.

Protect yourself from spiritual attacks

Ghanaian musician, Article Wan Ghanaian musician, Article Wan

Ghanaian musician, Article Wan, has opened up on the spiritual attacks members of the creative arts industry face in their line of work.

In an interview with Zionfelix on March 7, 2025, Article Wan noted that some creatives envy others, especially when they are thriving, which leads to unnecessary attacks.

“As a human being, I believe that there are a lot of battles in whatever you do… There are many musicians in Ghana, but you would agree with me that if some of them see me on stage and in my Range Rover, they begin to envy me. So, you have to be spiritually strong,” he said.

Article Wan further stated that creatives should seek spiritual protection to avoid being killed at the peak of their career.

“When someone is spiritually working against you, you won’t see it but all you have to do is to be prayerful and be spiritually and physically strong so that you won’t be killed.

“Now, the phase we are in is very scary. Prayers are very necessary and I can’t disclose the sources of spiritual protection here because if your haters get to know, they can finish you there,” he added.

Mahama has appointed only 30 presidential staffers, not 100 – Kwakye Ofosu

The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims that President John Dramani Mahama has appointed 100 individuals to serve as presidential staffers.

According to him, the president has only appointed 30 staffers, a figure he says is significantly lower than that of the previous government.

This statement comes in response to remarks by Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Damongo, who accused President Mahama of failing to uphold his commitment to appointing a lean government by allegedly exceeding the promised 60 ministers and appointing over 100 staffers at the presidency.

Addressing the matter at a press conference on Friday, March 7, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu stated that all appointed presidential staffers had been publicly announced, dismissing any claims of undisclosed appointments.

“Everybody who has been appointed as a presidential staffer has been named in a statement signed by me. So, currently, there are 27 presidential staffers. Tokor (VR), Mar 07, GNA – The people of Ketu South have been urged to honour their tax obligations to generate domestic revenue to undertake development programmes amid aid cuts to the country.

The United States’ government had announced the suspension of its primary international aid agency, USAID’s funding programme, creating an estimated $156 million funding shortfall to Ghana with particular concern being a potential $78.2 million deficit, which could adversely impact critical interventions like malaria prevention, maternal and child health, nutrition and the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Addressing an audience Thursday at the forecourt of the Municipal Assembly to commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary, Mr Gilbert E. Avemegah, Municipal Coordinating Director, Ketu South said for some time, inflow of foreign aid and grants to Ghana had reduced significantly, requiring the need to generate domestic revenue and urged residents of the border municipality to play their part.

“Recently, the American government has withdrawn all financial support for USAID programme. This has created some financial gap for the programme as a country and its associated implications. It means we must double our efforts to generate domestic revenue.

I therefore wish to urge all inhabitants of Ketu South Municipality to honour their tax obligations promptly. This is the only way we can get enough revenue to undertake development programmes in the municipality.”

Mr Avemegah described the theme for the celebration, “Reflect, Review and Reset” as apt saying, the situation in the country required critical thinking, and evaluating performances since attaining independence in 1957, and a holistic mind change in attitude, behaviour, perseverance, commitment, and some level of sacrifice.

He called for rekindling of communal spirit among communities in participating especially in general clean up exercises because sanitation management was the responsibility of everyone which must be seen as an everyday activity to make the environment a safe place to live in for healthy growth.

Mr Avemegah also encouraged stakeholders in education particularly parents to play their roles to arrest the gradual decline in performance at both basic and second cycle levels in the municipality, and indiscipline and moral decadence, which he said were becoming the norm.

He asked the citizenry not to take the prevailing peace in the country for granted as “Ghana, to a large extent is peaceful not by coincidence but by the grace of God and the collective efforts of all of us.”

Mr Avemgah concluded by emphasising the need for teamwork saying, coming together, working together, and keeping together were key in making and ensuring progress which “I believe in all sincerity and humility can be the foundation for the reset agenda and building the Ghana we all want.”

The event in the municipality, uniquely marked in accordance with the directive from the office of the President to scale down the 2025 celebration, had a ceremonial parade featuring the cadet corps from the Three Town Senior High School.

There was also a cultural display showcasing Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and poetry recitals reflecting on Ghanaian culture and the nation’s journey to independence performed by Kopeyia Basic School and Kekeli School Complex.

The celebration attended by traditional leaders, assembly members, and personnel from the security agencies, also awarded a citation and an undisclosed amount of money to one best performing student each at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the 2023 year.

Minority scolds Majority MPs over rampant absenteeism

The Minority MPs addressing the press The Minority MPs addressing the press

The Minority Members of Parliament have criticised the Majority caucus over their frequent absenteeism from the chamber.

Addressing the press on Friday, March 7, 2025, the Minority, led by the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, expressed concern over the attitude of the NDC MPs, emphasising how they fail to gather their numbers in the chamber despite being in the Majority.

Speaking on the low turnout of their colleagues from the NDC side and their inability to form a quorum for the conduction of government business, Kingsley Nyarko highlighted how these occurrences could negatively impact the country.

“We need one-third of the House to commence business. We come to the House to work…. The NDC claims to be the super majority, but they struggle to assemble their members to come to the House to do business,” he stated.

The MP described how a similar scenario happened on Friday, March 7, with a recorded low turnout of MPs from the Majority side, describing it as embarrassing.

“Today, what we’ve seen is just embarrassing. We are here to do business, but they couldn’t mass up their numbers to do business. And for us, this is worrying. How long can we continue on this tangent?” he continued.

Nyarko called on Ghanaians to address the worrying trend and the precedent being set by their colleagues in the Majority.

He concluded by stating that taking action would ensure that parliamentary business is conducted with the seriousness required to advance the country.

“We want Ghanaians to know and to tell our friends from the NDC to take Ghanaians seriously; to take the business of the House serious, because Ghanaians expect a lot from us. They want us to meet their needs and their aspirations. When this behavior continues unchecked, it is not going to help us to advance this country,” he added.

Ghana president tells youth economic future is in their hands

0

President John Mahama

Young Ghanaians must step up, seize government’s opportunities, and contribute to building a self-sufficient nation. Ghana’s economic future is in your hands, President John Dramani Mahama said at the 68th Independence Day Anniversary on Thursday.

He said agriculture remained Ghana’s biggest opportunity to reducing import dependency, and with the over two-billion US dollars spent annually on food imports, government’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA) was structured to strengthen local agribusiness and ensure food security.

The Feed Ghana Programme, President Mahama noted, would also drive mass food production and stabilise prices, while the Poultry Farm-to-Table Initiative would boost domestic production and processing to directly address the nation’s 95 per cent reliance on imported poultry.

The success of these policies, he said, depended on active citizen participation, particularly from young people.

The AgriNext Programme would equip 30,000 youth with land, training, and agribusiness opportunities.

As part of measures to boost agriculture and ensure food security, President Mahama said Farmer Service Centres in every district would provide access to mechanisation, quality seeds, and fertilisers to boost local food production.

“This is a defining moment but policies alone, no matter how well-couched, will not change our reality, action will. As your president, I am taking the necessary actions to create growth opportunities and enhance our economic independence,” he added.

Ghana’s independence is the single most important event in the country’s history as it set the stage for nationhood. It lit the flames of independence in sub-Saharan Africa by inspiring other countries, yoked to colonial exploitation, to seek self-determination.

In a video shared online on March 7, 2025, the actress stated emphatically that disrespecting her mother would not be tolerated.

Benedicta Gafah said she would not compromise her mother’s reputation, regardless of a person’s status in society.

“As I grow, there are so many things I learn every day. I am learning forgiveness, I am learning how to enjoy people for who they are. But one thing I would not let go is if you speak disgustingly about my mother. If you ever or have passed any bad comments about my mother, I promise I am not going to talk to you until death do us part,” she said.

She also expressed disappointment in individuals who have ruined their relationships with their mothers due to fake prophecies from men of God.

‘The delegate system is useless and unsustainable’ – Former NPP chairman

0

NPP supporters at a rally NPP supporters at a rally

Robert Yaw Amankwah, a former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), has described the delegate system in parliamentary primaries as utterly useless and unsustainable.

In his estimation, the clear display of extreme greed among delegates is unhealthy and has a direct impact on voter psyche during general elections.

He made this assertion during an interview with Okay FM on March 7, 2025, while discussing issues he believes contributed to the abysmal performance of the NPP in the 2024 Election.

“The penchant of delegates flaunting financial benefits irks some electorates. Now, they also expect to be financially motivated before they go out to vote.

“Last year, I had to personally go house to house to beg people to come out and vote. A woman I encountered demanded I incentivise her before she goes to the polls. The bribing even within internal party elections sometimes go against capable candidates who may not have the financial wherewithal,” he said.

Against that background, he has advised party executives to adopt a more efficient and transparent system that would be embraced by the rank and file.

“Going forward, the party has to be more strategic and forward looking to avoid such embarrassment at the polls. We have to do things differently,” he added.

Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman of National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman of National Development Planning Commission (NDPC)

Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr. Nii Moi Thompson has questioned why donor support funds running into billions have not found true expression in the public sector.

According to him, his own rough calculations show that financial support from donor agencies should add up to a billion dollars.

He therefore finds it difficult to understand why there has not been any real impact.

Speaking on workplace productivity in government offices in an interview with Channel One TV, on March 5, 2025, he stated that his outfit will conduct series of research to unravel the cause of the problem.

“By my own reckoning, over the past forty years, we might have received something close to a billion dollars in donor assistance in all forms. Some 200 million, others 300 million for public sector reforms and yet the impact appears to be zero,” he said.

He indicated his readiness to collaborate with Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, Minister of State in charge of Public Sector Reforms to explore ways to transform the sector.

“In our current context, the president has appointed a minister of State Public Sector Reforms. I just got her number. So, we are going to reach out to her, but it will take a number of diagnostics to see how come we spend so much money which does not yield results,” he said.

Rainstorm kills 7-year-old girl in Damongo, shops damaged

0

A heavy rainstorm has struck the Savannah Regional capital of Damongo, killing one person and causing havoc to homes and shops, among others.

The disaster, which occurred on Wednesday night, claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl, who, together with her elder brother, were running home when a roofing sheet from one of the affected buildings fell and cut her on the neck, causing her to bleed to death.

A family member of deceased Karim Salifu expressed regret for allowing the deceased outside the house at that hour, leading to her death.

“It’s very painful and irresponsible on our part to have allowed little children outside at that time because I believe that if she was home, what befell her, would have been avoided,” Mr Salifu admitted.

The ten-minute storm hit hard on the business and several communities.

The greater part of the building housing the Damongo branch of the Volta River Authority [VRA] was badly hit with all computers of the company soaked in water.

A nearby pharmacy and other shops were also affected.

At the time of filing this report, officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) say they were still taking stock of the destruction and could not confirm the extent of the damage caused.

Ghana’s creative industry at 68: A sector of influence, but are creatives truly cashing in?

0

As Ghana celebrates 68 years of independence, the spotlight turns to one of the nation’s most vibrant and influential sectors; the creative industry.

From the pulsating rhythms of Highlife and Afrobeats to the captivating storytelling of Ghanaian films and the bold designs of its fashion industry, the creative space has become a cornerstone of Ghana’s cultural identity and economic potential.

Yet, amid the glitz and glamour, a pressing question remains: Are Ghanaian creatives truly reaping the financial rewards of their talent and hard work?

In a recent episode of The Market Place’s Show Business segment, host Daryl Kwawu sat down with culture journalist and expert on Ghana’s entertainment and creative economy, Kenneth Awotwe Darko, to dissect the state of the industry, its challenges, and its untapped potential.

Watch playback of interview here:

The conversation began with an overview of the industry’s evolution over the past six decades. Kenneth Awotwe Darko highlighted the significant strides made, particularly in the last 20 years.

“Ghana’s music, film, and fashion industries have expanded beyond our borders, attracting international audiences,” he noted.

“Our musicians are gaining global recognition, filmmakers are securing deals with platforms like Netflix, and Ghanaian fashion is gracing international runways.”

However, Mr Darko was quick to point out that while the industry’s influence is undeniable, its economic impact has not always matched the hype. “Structural challenges still prevent creatives from fully capitalizing on their talent,” he explained. “The growth is there, but the monetization hasn’t kept pace.”
Revenue Streams: Where Is the Money Coming From?

The discussion then shifted to the key revenue streams available to Ghanaian creatives. Darko outlined several sources of income across different sectors. For musicians, streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Boomplay have become important revenue sources, though they often pay poorly unless artists achieve high streaming numbers. Other income streams include brand endorsements, performance fees, and publishing deals.

For filmmakers, revenue comes from licensing deals with platforms like Netflix, cinema ticket sales, and sponsorships. However, these opportunities are often limited to a select few. Fashion designers rely on direct sales, international collaborations, and merchandising. Yet, the lack of structured business models often hinders scalability.

Despite these opportunities, Darko emphasized a critical gap: the absence of strong investment structures. “Most creatives operate as individuals rather than as structured businesses that can attract capital and scale up,” he said.

The host raised a crucial question: Why aren’t Ghanaian creatives making as much as they should? Darko identified several barriers. Weak copyright and royalties enforcement mean many creatives don’t get paid for their work due to piracy and inadequate intellectual property laws. Limited investment and funding further exacerbate the problem, as the industry lacks access to venture capital, grants, and other funding mechanisms that could fuel growth.

Additionally, unfair revenue sharing on digital platforms often disadvantages Ghanaian artists, who receive smaller cuts compared to their counterparts in larger markets. Infrastructure gaps also pose a significant challenge, with the absence of local streaming services, robust event spaces, and distribution networks limiting opportunities for creatives to showcase and monetize their work.

He suggested that Ghana could adopt similar strategies from developed countries in and outside Africa by investing in talent incubation, developing funding models, and strengthening copyright enforcement.

Looking ahead, Mr Darko outlined three major shifts needed to transform Ghana’s creative industry into a serious economic powerhouse. First, government support is crucial. More policies are needed to protect and fund creatives, including stronger intellectual property laws and targeted funding programs. Second, the private sector must recognize the creative industry as a viable investment area, providing the capital needed for growth and innovation. Third, creatives must adopt entrepreneurial mindsets, developing scalable business models rather than relying solely on gigs or one-time payments.

As Ghana celebrates 67 years of independence, its creative industry stands as a testament to the nation’s rich cultural heritage and innovative spirit. While challenges remain, the potential for growth and economic impact is immense. With the right policies, investments, and strategies, Ghana’s creatives can not only shine on the global stage but also reap the financial rewards they truly deserve.

As Kenneth Awotwe Darko put it, “The influence is undeniable. Now, it’s time to turn that influence into sustainable economic value.”
