Chief Executive Officer of Charterhouse, Theresa Ayoade
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Charterhouse, Theresa Ayoade, has applauded creatives and media personalities for their significant impact on the creative arts industry.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, and monitored by MyNewsGh, she reflected on how past radio promotions were ground-breaking, while expressing hope of bigger and bolder ideas in the future.
According to Theresa Ayoade, despite the growth in the creative industry, there is still room for improvement.
“In the past, we used to have radio promotions that kept people glued to their sets. For example, when I worked at Joy FM, we did a promotion called ‘Get a Life,’ where a listener could win a fully furnished house and a car just by participating in a quiz. Those were life-changing promotions,” she recalled.
However, she admitted that such grand concepts have become rare.
“I don’t know if it’s the economy or just a shift in priorities, but we don’t see many of these big promotions anymore. I think we need to be more imaginative and think bigger,” she said.
Theresa, who co-founded Charterhouse with her husband, revealed that her drive for creativity was what led to the birth of the Ghana Music Awards Festival.
“When we started Charterhouse, we wanted to create something big and exciting. That’s why we launched the Ghana Music Awards, which has now grown into a major festival,” she stated.
She emphasised that Ghana’s entertainment industry thrives on creative minds, and it’s crucial to provide them with the right environment to flourish.
“Some people are just not made for the typical 9-to-5 job. They need space to express themselves creatively, and that’s what we tried to create at Charterhouse,” she noted.

Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo dancing at the remembrance service
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was the centre of attraction during the 60th Remembrance Service of statesman, scholar, and lawyer, John Boakye Danquah, popularly referred to as J.B. Danquah, at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church at Kyebi on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
During the time for offertory, the former president took to the dance floor to exhibit his dance moves, this time without his signature look, his iconic spectacles.
The moment, which was captured in a video, showed him dancing alongside an unidentified woman, while some jubilant congregants cheered him on.
Akufo-Addo arrived for the service alongside the former First lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin.
J.B. Danquah was a key figure in Ghana’s political history who contested Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the April 1960 presidential election but lost.
On October 3, 1961, he was arrested under the Preventive Detention Act on allegations of plotting to subvert the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and assassinate Dr. Nkrumah.
Although he was released in June 1962, he was later elected President of the Ghana Bar Association.
J.B. Danquah was rearrested in January 1964, without formal charges and was detained at the Nsawam Medium Prison. He died in February 1965 at the age of 69 while still in prison custody.
Following the overthrow of the CPP in February 1966 by the National Liberation Council (NLC), he was buried by the state in recognition of his contributions to the country.

Director of Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness, Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor
The government held a National Economic Dialogue on March 3 and 4, 2025, which brought together top economic experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and other experts from various fields to brainstorm and share ideas on how the economy can be put back on a sound footing and witness growth.
Many people have lauded the government for carrying out such a programme, and the latest to speak on it is the Director of Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness, Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor.
According to him, the government decided to hold the event to get a better understanding from these experts the extent to which the economy had been in shambles, as well as to propose strategic, long-lasting solutions to resolving the problem.
He said the sharing of wisdom and knowledge is the best way to go, rather than relying on one’s ability to tackle an issue.
Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, Dr Peter Otokunor said, “We needed to understand the situation that we are in. We started calling for this National Economic Dialogue. They (previous government) laughed at us that we lack ideas that’s why we are calling for it. They said the same thing when we were going to Senchi [Royal Senchi Hotel]. What they fail to understand is that wisdom does not lie in one man’s head.”
He added, “If you want to go far, you go together, but if you want to go fast, you go alone. But you are likely to break down along the way.”
The National Economic Dialogue focused on macroeconomic stability, economic transformation, infrastructure development, structural reforms, private sector growth, and governance.
President John Dramani Mahama was the guest of honour at the event and spoke on the theme, “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together.”

Three individuals, including a woman, have reportedly been shot dead at Gumyoko, a suburb of the Binduri District in the Upper East Region.
The fatal attack occurred on the night of Saturday, 9th March 2025, when unidentified gunmen stormed the victims’ residence and opened fire, killing them instantly.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear; however, some residents believe it is linked to the ongoing Bawku Conflict.
The volatile situation in the region has led to heightened tensions, with several communities living in fear of further violence.
Although calm has been restored in Gumyoko, a joint team of military and police personnel has been deployed to maintain security in the area.
Authorities have assured residents of their commitment to safeguarding lives and property while investigations into the incident continue.
The latest killings have added to growing concerns over the persistent insecurity in the region.

Following an intelligence-led operation in the Northern Region, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized a significant quantity of restricted goods, including illicit cigarettes and controlled pharmaceutical products.
The seized items include 450 boxes of Business Royal Cigarettes, each containing 50 packets, and five boxes of Tapentadol tablets. The estimated duty for both products is valued at GH¢20.6 million.
The seizure occurred after customs officials received intelligence on February 11, 2025, about a vehicle transporting restricted items along the Nanton to Gushegu road. Acting on this tip-off, a task force from the Tamale Collection Regional Headquarters set up a checkpoint on the Gaha to Gushegu road to intercept suspicious vehicles.
During the operation, a vehicle with registration number GS 7592-13 sped past the checkpoint without stopping, prompting a pursuit by the task force. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver refused to disclose details about its contents, insisting that only the owner could provide such information. Shortly after, the vehicle owner arrived on a motorbike but also declined to comment.
Despite resistance from the suspects, customs officers moved the vehicle to the Tamale Collection Regional Headquarters for further inspection. The driver and owner were instructed to return for an official examination of the cargo on February 12, but they failed to appear.
A subsequent search of the vehicle on February 19, 2025, in the presence of officials, confirmed that it contained highly restricted goods requiring proper licensing and permits for importation. Since the driver and owner lacked the necessary authorization, the goods were seized under Notice of Seizure Number 248806 on February 25, 2025.
In response to the incident, Brigadier General Zibrim Bawah Ayorrogo, Commissioner of Customs, visited the Tamale Collection Regional Headquarters to gather firsthand information on the operation.
Speaking to Citi News, he stated that collaboration among state agencies, including National Security, the Narcotics Control Commission, and others, has been strengthened to curb the influx of illicit drugs. “We’ve done a lot of work to combat this menace, but because we don’t publicize it, the public remains unaware,” he said.
He further assured the public that, despite the complexity of the operations of the cartel involved, customs will intensify surveillance at ports and borders to tackle smuggling.
The case has now been handed over to the Narcotics Control Commission for further investigation. Authorities are expected to take legal action against those involved in the illegal transportation of these restricted goods.
Illicit drugs continue to flood Ghana’s open market despite ongoing enforcement efforts. The rising trend of drug abuse among the youth has become a growing concern for authorities and the public alike.

Leadership and governance expert, Professor Stephen Adei, has championed the establishment of special courts to address corruption cases in Ghana.
According to him, the sole mandate of these courts will be to effectively and efficiently handle corruption cases and ensure accountability.
Prof. Adei acknowledged the fact that corruption cases often take very long years to be prosecuted, resulting in people in corruption related scandals getting away with their crimes.

High jumper, Gilbert Ampiah wants to be at the Paralympics one day
Disability is not inability, and Gilbert Ampiah has defied all odds to participate in sports, specifically high jump.
This 16-year-old physically-challenged boy, schooling at St. Augustine’s College, was seen in a video posted by 3Sports participating in high jump successfully, unlike his colleagues who had the bar falling off, signifying their failure and disqualification to the next stage.
“A lot of schools in the Central Region wanted to recruit me, but I wanted AUGUSCO. My headmaster in junior high recommended me to AUGUSCO’s sports master. They then scouted me, and they were pleased with what they saw, so they picked me,” Gilbert Ampiah told 3Sports.
Gilbert Ampiah achieved a personal best of 1.60m in 2023 during a competition with able-bodied children at Ekumfi Atwa.
At the inter-houses level, the physically-challenged high jumper set a new personal best of 1.82m.
Gilbert Ampiah is eyeing the Paralympics and hopes his dream of partaking in the high jump at that level materialises soon.
“AUGUSCO is one of the best schools in Ghana. They can help me get to the Paralympics,” he stated.
About high jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors leap (unaided) from one foot over a four-metre-long horizontal bar, according to worldathletics.org.
It adds that athletes accelerate down the runway, take off on one foot, and aim to clear the greatest height without knocking the bar to the ground.
Once they’ve completed their jump, athletes land on a crash mat.
Each competitor has a maximum of three attempts per height. A jump is considered successful if the athlete clears the bar without dislodging it.
The height of the bar is raised in increments after each round of trials.

Accra, March 9, GNA – Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Chairman of African Business Center for Developing Education (ABCDE), has reiterated the importance of Vocational and technical education in Ghana’s economic transformation.
He said Ghana’s industrialisation journey must be anchored on quality education and vocational training, which would equip young people, especially women, with the skills necessary to drive the economy.
Dr Spio-Garbrah was speaking at an International Women’s Day forum, on the theme: “Accelerating Action: Building Momentum for the Affirmative Action Act in TVET,” in Accra.
The event focused on how TVET has the potential to bridge the technical and vocational skills gaps and play a pivotal role in quickening the implementation of the Affirmative Action Act.
“If Ghana can master and control its capacity to develop men and women who understand and can practice the various disciplines in vocational and technical education, that is when I think our country will rise very fast and record all the various benchmarks that we are all looking forward to,” he said.
He highlighted the success of countries like Korea, Japan, China, and some European nations in mastering vocational and technical education, which had significantly contributed to their rapid economic growth.
The Former Education Minister pointed to China’s emphasis on engineering sciences, noting that the country had produced nearly a million engineers as part of a strategic initiative launched under their former leader.
“They discovered that the key to their success and growth has to be the study of engineering and technical vocational education,” he stated, and urged Ghana to adopt a similar approach to accelerate industrialisation.
Dr Irene Agyenim-Boateng, Vice-Chair, Public Services Commission, highlighted the TVET programme’s potential to bridge Ghana’s technical and vocational skills gap while playing a crucial role in accelerating the Affirmative Action Act.
She said those skills were essential for industrialisation and economic development but acknowledged the persistent gender disparity in technical fields.
Dr Agyenim-Boateng called for the effective implementation of the Affirmative Action Act to ensure women were not discriminated in education, leadership, or at the workplace.
She urged stakeholders, including policymakers and implementers, to take deliberate steps to accelerate the Act’s provisions, ensuring they went beyond theoretical commitments.
“We need to emphasise so we are not caught in the excitement of the coming-into-being of the Act, but to discuss ways to ensure the acceleration of the provisions outlined in there to secure the future of women in Ghana,” she stated.
She emphasised that building momentum for affirmative action must be anchored on effective communication.
Dr Eric Kofi Adzroe, the Acting Director-General, Ghana TVET Service, said Service was implementing strategies to ensure that both boys and girls had equal opportunities in technical and vocational education.
He highlighted the increasing demand for technical education, with more than 56,000 applications this year, demonstrating the growing awareness of its importance.
Accra, March 9, GNA – Experts on Ghana’s political dispensation have agreed on the need for improved security measures for Mr Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, and his staff to enable them to fight corruption without fear.
This follows a speech delivered by the Special Prosecutor at the Constitution Day Lecture in Accra, where expressed concerns over the security threats he (Mr Agyebeng) and his staff faced, revealing the personal risks associated with his role.
“My security risk is ultra high. And I have to perpetually be on the lookout for attacks on my person. Same applies to especially the operational officers of the OSP,” he said.
“The job is thankless. It fetches you droves of enemies daily. It brings you into frontal contact with the lowest forms of debasement in humans. You do not go asking for it. It finds you. That is the nature of the job.”
With that in perspective, Mr Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President and Policy Analyst at IMANI Africa, at a panel discussion on Saturday on an Accra-based television station, emphasised the need for greater support and protection for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), citing the risks associated with its mandate.
“We all want to change. We all want to change, but nobody wants to change. We should take care of them [the OSP].”
He noted that a comprehensive corrupt practices act would help to clearly define and address corruption-related offenses.
Mr Bentil said the laws must be clear and stringent to afford the country the opportunity to concisely set out what corruption and related offences meant and the prescribed punishments.
Acknowledging the immense challenges associated with the OSP’s work, Mr Bentil described Mr Agyebeng as “a resilient individual who is well-suited for the job.”
He advocated the greater independence of the OSP, suggesting the handling of all prosecutions by the Office rather than the Attorney General’s Department to minimise political interference.
“In fact, I am really pushing hard that all prosecution should go to that office, instead of the Attorney General, which is political, and they’re going to get non-prosecutors,” he said.
“If all the prosecutions over which we’ve seen non-prosecutors were at the Special Prosecutor’s place, a change of government may not affect much. So, that office is useful. We may even need to expand it.”
Dr Thomas Anaba, the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament (MP) of Garu, and a former Medical Director at Ridge Hospital, criticised what he described as a lack of genuine commitment by the country’s leadership to fight corruption.
“Leadership of the country set up anti-corruption agencies as a pin smoke. That is how I see it—smoke screen. So that behind it, they are doing what they want.”
“You occupy an office and at the end, you either agree with them or they deal with you…”.
Dr Anaba said Ghana lost billions of dollars to corruption annually, yet the OSP operated with limited resources, making it difficult to confront well-connected individuals who engaged in corrupt practices.
Echoing similar sentiments, Dr Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, New Patriotic Party MP of Walewale, acknowledged the structural limitations of the OSP within Ghana’s democratic framework.
“Unfortunately for the OSP, we are practicing a very democratic regime, where the rights of individuals, even no matter how criminal minded they are, would have to be litigated to,” he said.
“So, when he comes off as someone facing that kind of opposition, I understand why he should be concerned.”
A threat to the Special Prosecutor’s life was a threat to Ghana’s sustainability and political development, Dr Mahama said, urging collective support for the OSP’s mission.
Panelists concluded on the need for stronger legislation, increased security for the Special Prosecutor, and sustained public commitment to combating corruption in Ghana.
Media personality and entertainment pundit, Halifax Ansah Addo
Media personality and entertainment pundit Halifax Ansah Addo has hit back at some creative arts personalities who have called on President Mahama to revoke the appointments of Kafui Danku and James Gardiner, who have been appointed to lead the Ghana Film Authority.
In a discussion on United Showbiz on March 8, 2025, Halifax Ansah Addo established that the group calling itself the ‘Association of Ghanaian Creatives’ has embarrassed itself by opposing the appointments of Kafui Danku and James Gardiner.
He explained that the manner in which they went about their petition was absurd and embarrassing, adding that there was no unity among them.
Halifax said at one point, some individuals even claimed they did not authorize their names to be included in the petition sent to the president.
“The way they went about the whole issue, I think they have discredited themselves. For the fact that they all came together to note that they didn’t like the two persons, however, some of them are saying they didn’t request for their names to be added. I think we are our own problem in this industry. I would be surprised and disappointed if the president changes his mind,” he said.
Halifax said he firmly believes that President John Dramani Mahama would not have a second thought and revoke the appointments of James Gardiner and Kafui Danku.
He added that the two personalities have achieved a lot in the creative arts industry even when the movie industry was gripped with challenges.
“I don’t think the president would even change his mind. We had times where people were not producing anymore in this country, yet Kafui was doing the work. I don’t see how would fail working with a board of experts…
“The president doesn’t need your opinion to appoint the head of the National Film Authority. You have the right to say whatever you want but let him have his way,” he added.
Life, they say, is full of surprises, and it may never seem to end.
A young man who completed his first degree at the University of Ghana in 2018 with a BSc Administration, majoring in Accounting, has provided more evidence to the above.
Identified as Jonathan, he has put aside his certificate to take over his family business at Hohoe, in the Volta Region.
He became the spotlight on X after he disclosed his intention to expand the business and employ several people, especially junior and senior high school graduates.
Jonathan disclosed that apart from selling Hausa koko, they sell other food too, following the expansion of the business.
He said the restaurant, named A1, has over 12 branches and that he is looking forward to penetrating the Accra market.
Stating his motivation for venturing into entrepreneurship instead of being in the corporate world, Jonathan said, “Since I was out of school, this is a family business that sustains us. I did BSc Administration, majored in accounting, and graduated in 2018. Since then, I took up this job to make it a big business to employ especially SHS graduates.
“Most of my workers are in school, JHS graduates, SHS graduates… I have 12 branches in town,” he added.

Corneille Nangaa has addressed large rallies in cities captured by the M23
The Democratic Republic of Congo government has offered a reward of $5m (£4m) for help arresting three leaders of a rebel group which has seized much of the east of the country this year.
Corneille Nangaa, a former head of DR Congo’s electoral commission, now leads the Congo River Alliance, which includes the M23 rebel group. He has addressed large rallies in the cities under the group’s control.
The bounty is also on offer for M23 leaders Sultani Makenga and Bertrand Bisimwa.
Last year the three men were prosecuted in absentia by a military court and given death sentences for treason.
A reward of $4m (£3) was also offered for the arrest of their accomplices.
But the chances of them being arrested appear slim.
In recent weeks the army has been no match for the Rwandan-backed rebels who have captured large parts of the mineral-rich eastern DR Congo, including the region’s two largest cities – Goma and Bukavu.
So President Félix Tshisekedi has instead focused on trying to build international pressure for Rwanda to face sanctions for backing the rebels.
Last year, a report by UN experts said up to 4,000 Rwanda troops were working with the M23 in DR Congo.
Thousands of people have been killed during the fighting and hundreds of thousands left without shelter after fleeing their homes.
The Congolese government is also seeking US support in exchange for access to its minerals.
DR Congo accuses Rwanda of trying to take control of its minerals, which include gold and coltan, used in consumers electronics such as mobile phones and computers.
In response to the reports that DR Congo was offering access to the minerals in exchange for military help fighting the M23 rebels, presidential spokeswoman Tina Salama said on X last month that President Tshisekedi was inviting the US “whose companies source strategic raw materials from Rwanda, materials that are looted from the DRC and smuggled to Rwanda” to instead buy them from the Congolese – the “rightful owners”.
Rwanda denies looting minerals from DR Congo.
It no longer denies backing the M23 but says it is trying to prevent the conflict in DR Congo from spilling over into its own territory.
Rwanda also accuses the Congolese government of working with a different armed group in DR Congo, which is linked to those responsible for the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which some 800,000 people, mostly ethnic Tutsis were massacred.
Both the M23 and Rwanda’s government are led by Tutsis.
The Congolese government denies working with the FDLR group accused by Rwanda of being a “genocidal militia”.

Economic analysts and governance experts have lauded the government’s decision to scale down this year’s Independence Day celebrations, describing it as a prudent response to Ghana’s economic challenges.
During his speech at the 6th March celebration held at Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama said this year’s budget for the event was GH₵20 million. By opting for a more modest celebration, the government spent only GH₵1 million, saving nearly GH₵19 million.
Mr Mahama noted that the decision to scale down the event was necessary given the country’s economic situation.
The national parade, traditionally held at Independence Square or in a selected region, was moved to Jubilee House and conducted with fewer logistical demands.
President Mahama justified the decision, stating that while Independence Day remains a proud moment for Ghanaians, spending such an amount on festivities would have been unjustifiable given the country’s financial constraints.
The move has been widely welcomed by economic and policy analysts, who discussed the decision on Newsfile, a JoyNews programme, on Saturday, March 8.
Mr Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, described the decision as a reflection of Ghana’s current economic realities.
“We cannot justify spending GH₵20 million on celebrations while schools lack basic infrastructure and hospitals struggle with inadequate resources,” he said.
Dr John Gatsi, a member of the National Economic Dialogue Committee, commended the government, saying it demonstrated financial discipline.
“Every cedi matters in times like these. Scaling down the event does not diminish our national pride but rather reinforces the need for responsible spending,” he stated.
Mr Franklin Cudjoe, Founding President of IMANI Africa, also supported the move, adding that similar cost-cutting measures should be considered across other areas of public expenditure.
“This is a good step, but we need to look at other areas where public funds are not being used efficiently,” he remarked.
Dr Abdul-Tia Kabiru, MP for Wa West, noted that while national celebrations remain important, they should not come at the expense of urgent developmental needs.
“This is about making practical choices. We can still honour our independence in meaningful ways without stretching our finances,” he said.
At a recent event, while emphasizing the importance of women being productive and self-reliant, May Edochie took a poignant trip down memory lane, shared her survival story as a young nursing mother.
May recounted how she embraced even the humblest of hustles to stand on her own, an independence she claimed became her greatest strength when her marriage fell apart.
Media personality Nana Romeo has stated that, unlike the usual excitement surrounding Ghana’s Independence Day, he is indifferent about it.
In a discussion on United Showbiz on March 8, 2025, Nana Romeo noted that the Independence Day celebration is not worth celebrating because there is nothing that proves the country is truly independent.
He emphasised that the ideology that Ghana is an independent country only exists on paper and not in reality.
“I am one of the few people who do not believe in independent celebration. I don’t think we are independent because Ghana even imports toothpicks into the country. I also think that when it is the 6th of March, there is no need to parade ourselves because it is needless.
“We have all the natural resources in the country yet we don’t have good roads and streetlights. We are one of the most highly indebted countries in the world yet we claim we are independent. The independence is only in the book but in reality, that is not the case,” he said.
Citing the leadership of Burkina Faso’s head of state, Nana Romeo applauded the military leader for his transformative ideas in developing the country.
“If you go to Burkina Faso, the person leading the country is not a politician but a military leader, yet is one of the most transformative leaders in Africa. He has decided to change the narrative where students used to wear materials from abroad to locally printed materials.
“This is a leader who is independent and doesn’t depend on any white man. Again, this whole thing is on paper and not in reality,” he added.
Accra, March 9, GNA – The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Margaret Ansei, has called for a collective commitment to accelerate the growth of women entrepreneurs in Ghana, emphasizing the need for improved market access, financial inclusion, and institutional support.
Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day celebration, held at the forecourt of GEA, Ms. Ansei underscored the importance of empowering women in business under the theme, “Accelerating Growth to Empower Women and Expand Markets.”
She said while women entrepreneurs contributed significantly to Ghana’s economy, limited access to sustainable markets remained a major challenge.
To address this, she highlighted GEA’s Business in a Box (BizBox) Project, which includes Ghana Mall, a Trade Facilitation Hub designed to connect women-
led businesses to larger markets locally and internationally.
“This initiative serves as a launchpad for women-owned enterprises, providing them with a structured, well-branded platform to showcase their products, link up with buyers, explore export opportunities, and secure high-value commercial partnerships,” she said.
Ms. Ansei also emphasized the need for gender-responsive financial solutions to bridge funding gaps for women entrepreneurs.
She noted that while GEA has implemented grant schemes, loans, and other financial interventions for women-owned MSMEs, a more sustainable financing model is needed.
To this end, she expressed support for the Government of Ghana’s plan to establish a Women’s Development Bank, which will provide customized financial products, business development services, and capacity-building programs tailored specifically for women entrepreneurs.
“This initiative will redefine women’s access to finance, eliminating barriers like collateral demands, high-interest rates, and financial exclusion. Instead, it will offer funding solutions designed to support their expansion into high-growth industries,” she added.
Ms. Ansei called on financial institutions to develop more inclusive financial products, policymakers to simplify regulatory processes for women entrepreneurs, and corporate and development partners to continue investing in skills development, technology, and market expansion.
She urged women entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity to scale their businesses, embrace innovation, and position themselves for both national and global success.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, let us move beyond words and commit to real, measurable impact. When women succeed, families
prosper, communities flourish, and Ghana thrives. Let us accelerate growth—because the time is now!” she concluded.
The celebration, supported by Mastercard Foundation, brought together captains of industry, government officials, women entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders to discuss actionable strategies for advancing women’s economic empowerment in Ghana.
The event was graced by high-profile personalities, including the Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo, Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey, the Members of Parliament for Agona East and Awutu Senya East Queenstar Pokuaa Sawyer and Phyllis Naa Koryor Okunnor, National School Feeding Coordinator and her deputy Hajia Fati Forgor and Madam Faustina Lamptey respectively, all three female members of the council of state Ambassador Molly Anim Addo, Madam Evelyn Korang and Madam “Happy Yourself “
Three representatives from Mastercard Foundation which is the main sponsor of the event namely
Madam Emelia Ayipio Asamoah, Gottfried Odamtten-Sowah and Joseph Boateng were also in attendance.
Also present were the founder of Ignite Empowerment Initiative Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, NEIP Boss Eric Adjei and Deputy National Service Authority Coordinator Mrs Ruth Dela Seddoh, National Coordinator of Persons with Disability Madam Joyce Gyamfi, Deputy Director of SSNIT Dr. Benedicta Hoffman and former Mayor of Cape Coast Hon. Priscilla Arhin.
In the lead-up to the 2024 general election, tensions brewed within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, revealing deep-seated political rivalries. One of the most discussed rifts was between Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and the party’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO).
Speaking on Wontumi TV, radio host Oheneba shed light on what transpired between the two influential figures. According to him, Chairman Wontumi was strongly opposed to NAPO’s selection as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a decision rooted in past political grievances.
“Chairman Wontumi was against NAPO as running mate of the NPP. This is because NAPO campaigned against Chairman Wontumi during the Ashanti Regional chairmanship elections but God being so good, Wontumi won the elections. So how do you expect Wontumi to back NAPO to become vice president? So if you notice, there was no proper relationship between NAPO and Wontumi during the campaign season,” Oheneba revealed.
The tension reportedly stemmed from the 2022 NPP Ashanti Regional chairmanship race, where NAPO allegedly supported Wontumi’s opponent in an attempt to unseat him. Despite the efforts, Wontumi emerged victorious, reinforcing his stronghold in the region. However, the wounds from that contest never fully healed, creating an uneasy relationship when NAPO was announced as Bawumia’s running mate.
Throughout the campaign season, political analysts and party insiders observed a noticeable disconnect between the two men. Unlike previous elections where the regional chairman actively supported the party’s key candidates, Wontumi’s backing for NAPO appeared lukewarm at best. This, according to some political watchers, may have contributed to internal divisions that affected the party’s unity in the stronghold region.
The revelation by Oheneba has sparked debates among NPP supporters, with some arguing that personal rivalries should not influence major political decisions. Others believe such issues are inevitable in politics, especially when key stakeholders feel sidelined.
As the dust settles on the 2024 elections, the lingering question remains: Will the party find a way to mend these internal rifts ahead of future contests, or will personal interests continue to shape the dynamics of Ghana’s political landscape?

American rapper and businessman, Shawn Corey Carter, popularly known as Jay-Z
Jay-Z is suing the anonymous woman and her lawyers who accused him of sexual assault months ago, proposing three causes of action, malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and civil conspiracy.
The American rapper is suing attorney Tony Buzbee, David Fortney and their Jane Doe client over their alleged sexual assault suit that was previously dropped, as per Alabama court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
On Monday, March 3, Shawn Carter, who is widely known as Jay-Z, outlined three causes of action and also proposed a fourth in defamation against the Jane Doe.
Jay-Z is seeking assumed, actual and punitive damages and alleged in the new filing that the initial allegations of rape against him were made on purpose, being “false” and “malicious.”
The rapper further stated that the sexual assault suit was “strategically and tactically calculated to inflict maximum pain and suffering” to him.
On October 20, 2024, the previous lawsuit was originally filed, claiming Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs allegedly sexually abused a 13-year-old girl at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty in 2000.
On February 14, Buzbee and fellow attorney Antigone Curis voluntarily dismissed the suit.
Now, Jay-Z alleges in his March 3 filing that the October 20 lawsuit was based on false information from the Jane Doe and her attorneys.
In the filing, Jay Z claims that the Jane Doe and her lawyers “launched to extort” him “through a menacing ‘private’ ‘demand letter,’ ” further saying that the “malicious” defendants made “a desperate attempt to leverage Mr. Carter into an extortionate payoff.”
The lawsuit said the Jane Doe “voluntarily admitted” to Jay-Z’s representative that “Carter did not assault her” and that Buzbee “pushed her to go forward with the false narrative of the assault by Mr. Carter in order to leverage a maximum payday.”
It also stated that the rapper “brings this lawsuit to hold Doe accountable for her willful defamation per se and her malicious prosecution of knowingly false allegations against” Jay-Z.
On Monday, March 3, Buzbee told PEOPLE in a statement: “This new case alleges the same claims as the other one they pieced together and filed in Los Angeles. Like the one in LA, this new case in Alabama also has no legal merit… she stands by her claims.”
“After speaking with Jane Doe today, it appears that the quotes attributed to her in the lawsuit are completely made up, or they spoke to someone who isn’t Jane Doe”, the statement continued.
“This is just another attempt to intimidate and bully this poor woman that we will deal with in due course. We won’t be bullied or intimidated by frivolous cases.”
Jay-Z’s recent filing comes after his December 2024 lawsuit against attorney Tony Buzbee in Los Angeles, accusing him of civil extortion, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
On February 25, Judge Mark H. Epstein ruled that the defamation claim could proceed to trial but indicated he may dismiss the extortion claim, according to Rolling Stone.
The filing also comes weeks after Jay-Z alleged that Buzbee intentionally caused emotional distress by filing the lawsuit just before his daughter Blue Ivy’s Mufasa: The Lion King premiere.
Jay-Z alleges that the false allegations cost him $20 million in contracts and affected him mentally as well as his family.
Gen IK Acheampong was killed by firing squad on June 16, 1979
The author of the book, ‘General Acheampong; The Life and Times of Ghana’s Head of State,’ Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah, tells a very compelling story of the life of the former head of state of Ghana.
Although Acheampong died through execution, following the June 4, 1979, military uprising that brought Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings to power, having been found guilty of corruption, Agyeman-Duah shares a different account of things.
Speaking in an old clip of an interview he had with Channel One TV, Agyeman-Duah, who is a co-founder of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), explained that those corruption allegations were falsified against him.
He described the death of Acheampong as ‘tragic,’ adding that the late army general was deserving of even more accolades than he was accorded.
“His end was very tragic. If you look at his life story, what he did for the country and all, that end, I guess, was undeserving; tragic hero. He didn’t deserve to end the way he ended. You remember in the book I tell an interesting story which was told me by a very close associate of his.
“When he was going to build houses; the reason he provided housing for the soldiers was that he said, ‘Where I live in Arakan Barracks, perhaps, this is the only house I have and if I leave the army, I might fin myself on the streets myself. So, those who are glued to the old archaic story of he was corrupt and all that, they may have their say, but the evidence does not support it,” he said.
Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah also explained that the accusations of corruption levelled against Acheampong had not evidence backing them.
“Because, first of all, the accusations of corruption that were hugely placed on him, there was no evidence. Even his bank account showed ordinary savings. He didn’t have a bank account in any foreign country. He had only one house in his hometown and he didn’t build a house in Accra, yet, Dansoman Estate, he was the one who introduced it. It was the largest public estate in West Africa.
“And he didn’t even have any of the Dansoman houses. Teshie Nungua Estate, he did it and he didn’t take one for himself. And these are facts,” he added.
Ignatius Kutu Acheampong (September 23, 1931 – June 16, 1979) was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who was the military head of state of Ghana from January 13, 1972, to July 5, 1978, when he was deposed in a palace coup.
South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir is seen at an African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
South Sudan has seen an “alarming regression” as clashes in recent weeks in the country’s northeast threaten to undo years of progress towards peace, the United Nations commission on human rights for the country has warned.
The statement on Saturday from Yasmin Sooka, chairperson of the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, comes amid a spate of violence between security forces overseen by President Salva Kiir and an armed group his government has alleged is linked to First Vice President Riek Machar.
The situation has put in peril the pair’s fragile power-sharing agreement reached in 2018 to end five years of civil war. It has also sparked fears of war in the country’s Upper Nile state.
“We are witnessing an alarming regression that could erase years of hard-won progress,” Sooka said.
“Rather than fuelling division and conflict, leaders must urgently refocus on the peace process, uphold the human rights of South Sudanese citizens, and ensure a smooth transition to democracy,” Sooka said.
The chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, also expressed “deep concern” on Saturday.
In a statement, he called for an “immediate end to all hostilities.”
Eruption of violence
The latest flare-up began when fighting erupted between the Sudanese armed forces and a group identified by Human Rights Watch (HRW) as an “armed youth militia” in Nasir County in the Upper Nile state in February.
While it remains unclear what started the fighting, HRW noted rumours of forced disarmament may have fueled the unrest. Several clashes have since taken place, with fighters using “heavy weaponry”, according to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The agency has also reported fighting in Western Equatoria state in the southwestern part of the country.
Earlier this week, South Sudan’s information minister, Michael Makuei Lueth, blamed the violence, in part, on the White Army, a Nuer armed group operating in Upper Nile. He accused the group of working in league with Machar’s party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM/IO).
Tensions rose further earlier this week when Kiir ordered the arrests of two officials and several senior military officials allied with Machar. The army also surrounded Machar’s home, effectively putting him under house arrest.
Then on Friday, a UN helicopter attempting to rescue soldiers in the state was attacked, killing one crew member and wounding two others. An army general was also killed in the failed rescue mission, the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said Friday.
Speaking late Friday, Kiir urged calm following the incident.
“The government I lead will handle this crisis. We will remain steadfast on the path of peace,” he said.
‘Reckless power struggles’
South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, having gained independence in 2011.
However, the independence movement, led by Kiir’s Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), quickly splintered. By 2013, the country had descended into full-scale civil war. The fighting killed more than 400,000 people and displaced more than a million others.
In 2018, the two sides signed the Revitalised Agreement on Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
The agreement was meant to see the two warring factions unite their armies under a single unit, write a new constitution, prepare for general elections, organise a census and disarm all other armed groups. However, none of the reforms have been instituted.
In the statement released on Saturday, Barney Afako, another member of the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, warned observers are witnessing “a return to the reckless power struggles that have devastated the country in the past”.
He said that the South Sudanese had endured “atrocities, rights violations which amount to serious crimes, economic mismanagement, and ever-worsening security”.
“They deserve respite and peace, not another cycle of war,” he said.

Kevin Taylor Exposes Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah in Leaked WhatsApp Scandal
News Hub Creator1h
On a fiery episode of *Loud Silence Media* aired March 8, 2025, U.S.-based Ghanaian commentator Kevin Taylor dropped a bombshell, unveiling a leaked WhatsApp conversation implicating top media personality Kwame Afrifa, aka Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. Taylor alleged that Afrifa tried to silence him by intimidating one of his friends over a story involving a young man, Williams Anarfi Sarpong, tied to a gold scam exposé.
According to Taylor, Sarpong, desperate to dodge scrutiny on his show, enlisted Afrifa’s help to derail the segment. The leaked chats, broadcast live, showed Afrifa threatening Taylor’s friend with a tell-all exposé of his secrets unless he convinced Taylor to back off. “Kwame Afrifa is a small boy who should stay in his lane,” Taylor fumed. “My friend doesn’t produce my show—why not face me directly?” Displaying the full conversation, he accused Afrifa of crossing ethical and legal lines.
Taylor didn’t mince words, branding the move a “serious crime” and vowing to file a police complaint for a thorough investigation. “I have all the WhatsApp chats, and I’ll deal with you,” he warned Afrifa, signaling a no-holds-barred feud. The episode reignites tensions between the two, with posts on X noting Taylor’s past jabs at Afrifa’s credibility. Sarpong’s alleged scam—reportedly using ex-President Mahama’s image to dupe investors—adds fuel to the fire. As Ghana’s media scene buzzes, all eyes are on Afrifa’s next move and whether Taylor’s legal threat holds weight.
According to TV3 News, prominent economist Professor Stephen Adei has stated that he would carry President John Mahama on his back as a gesture of appreciation if the President successfully eliminates corruption in Ghana.
During an appearance on the KeyPoints program with Alfred Ocansey on March 8, Prof. Adei expressed his dedication to the fight against corruption, highlighting it as the primary barrier to the nation’s progress.
“Even though I’m an old man, I will do push-ups and physically put him on my back,” Prof. Adei said.
He cautioned that without substantial reforms, Ghana would continue to lag in both economic and social development.
To address this issue, Prof. Adei proposed the creation of a specialized anti-corruption court in Ghana aimed at accelerating the handling of corruption cases and ensuring accountability.
He noted that the protracted nature of current corruption trials allows wrongdoers to evade justice, advocating for a judicial system distinct from the regular courts, similar to land or commercial courts, to speed up proceedings.
He emphasized the necessity for these special courts to operate efficiently, stating that delays of several years in corruption cases are unacceptable.
Furthermore, Prof. Adei called for robust anti-corruption measures that enhance the likelihood of offenders being caught and held accountable, regardless of their political connections.
His advocacy for an anti-corruption court aligns with increasing calls for judicial reforms to effectively tackle corruption in Ghana.
Ankara fabric, often referred to as African print, has long been associated with vibrant colors, bold patterns, and cultural significance. Over the years, this fabric has evolved from traditional wear to a versatile material embraced by fashion lovers across the globe. In recent times, one particular interpretation of the Ankara style has gained popularity: elegant and modest fashion. This style combines the rich cultural heritage of African textiles with contemporary modest fashion principles, creating a unique and sophisticated look that appeals to a wide audience.
Elegant and modest Ankara styles emphasize simplicity, class, and coverage, offering women the opportunity to celebrate their cultural roots while maintaining a sense of refinement and grace. Unlike the more revealing fashion trends often seen in mainstream fashion, modest Ankara designs are characterized by longer hems, high necklines, and looser silhouettes, ensuring that the wearer’s beauty is expressed in a way that maintains dignity and poise.
The elegance of Ankara fabrics is showcased through the intricate designs and stunning color palettes that offer endless possibilities. Whether it’s a long maxi dress, a tailored blouse paired with a skirt, or a chic jumpsuit, the Ankara fabric can be styled in countless ways to create a polished and sophisticated look. Modesty in fashion does not mean sacrificing style—quite the opposite, as Ankara’s bold and distinctive patterns naturally elevate the outfit’s appeal.
Accessories play an important role in enhancing the elegance of a modest Ankara outfit. From statement earrings to simple bangles, the right accessories can complement the fabric without overpowering the design. When it comes to footwear, closed-toe shoes or sleek sandals often complete the look, ensuring both comfort and elegance.
The beauty of elegant and modest Ankara style lies in its ability to transcend borders, cultures, and ages. It offers women a chance to embrace their heritage while embodying a refined, modern aesthetic. As the global fashion industry continues to evolve, the Ankara style remains a testament to the timeless elegance and diversity that African fashion brings to the world.
The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has announced a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction, effective Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
The decision, taken after extensive consultations with Islamic clerics, aims to curb excessive wedding expenditure and ensure adherence to traditional Islamic practices.
In an official statement from the Office of the Bole Chief Imam, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu expressed concern that extravagant weddings have led to high costs, making it difficult for many young people to marry.
The ban specifically targets practices such as elaborate wedding receptions that involve multiple outfit changes by couples, male beauticians dressing the opposite sex, and record dances popularly referred to as “jams.”
“This decision aims to curb deviant practices which set high wedding costs, therefore making it difficult for many youths to get married,” the statement read in part.
The Chief Imam called for cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the ban.
Copies of the statement were sent to key authorities and institutions, including the Paramount Chief of Bole (the Bolewura), the police commander for Bole Municipal, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and local media houses such as Nkilgi FM and Yagbon FM.
Below is the statement.

Residents of Akrokerri in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region have been gripped with fear following an alleged raid by armed military and police officers on the residence of a small-scale miner.
The security personnel reportedly seized two cars, five motorbikes, an undisclosed amount of gold, and a significant sum of money.
During a visit to the town, Adom News gathered that the security team arrived in two Land Cruisers and a private car.
According to the younger brother of the victim, Atta Kituwa, the operatives took away GH¢150,000 in cash, a 2023 Honda vehicle, and other valuable items.
He also alleged that they ransacked rooms belonging to tenants but failed to disclose the reason for their operation.
Eyewitness Isaac Obeng, who had visited the miner’s house just before the raid, said he was taken aback by the sudden arrival of the heavily armed security personnel.
When he attempted to inquire about their mission, he claimed he was slapped by some of the officers when he complained about the sporadic gunshots.
The sudden and unexplained operation has left the community unsettled, with many questioning the motive behind the raid.
Stonebwoy broke down in tears on stage during his sold-out UK concert
Ghanaian reggae/dancehall musician Stonebwoy has sparked a wave of reactions on social media following some happenings at his just-ended ‘Up & Running’ album concert in the UK.
Recently, Stonebwoy found himself at the centre of controversy when a misunderstanding erupted between his camp and the organisers of Ghana’s 68th Independence Concert. This happened after both camps scheduled their events for the same day, March 8, 2025.
The scheduling conflict led to confusion, with Stonebwoy’s team accusing the organisers of the Independence Day concert of sabotage. The BHIM Camp claimed they had originally planned for March 8 to host Stonebwoy’s album concert.
Stonebwoy faced massive backlash, with critics labelling him as greedy and accusing him of attempting to monopolise the UK-based fanbase by scheduling his concert on the same day as the highly anticipated Independence Day show.
Some even speculated that Stonebwoy was worried his concert would flop if fans chose the “star-studded” Independence Day concert over his own.
However, seemingly overwhelmed by the challenges leading up to his performance, Stonebwoy broke down on stage midway through his performance on stage at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
While performing his popular song ‘My Name,’ the dancehall musician was visibly emotional and shedding tears.
A video capturing this moment has since gone viral, sparking all forms of reactions from netizens.
Some believe that the tears were a sign of joy, given the unexpectedly large turnout at the concert.
Others have congratulated Stonebwoy for successfully drawing such a big crowd on his own.

Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy has expressed frustration over the constant negativity he faces from some Ghanaians, particularly on social media.
Speaking candidly on the Afrobeats Podcast, the award-winning musician emotionally addressed how a lighthearted moment on TikTok Live with Nigerian influencer Peller spiraled into unnecessary controversy back home.
Stonebwoy described the situation as “heartbreaking,” emphasizing that such a mentality should no longer exist among Ghanaians in 2025.
He recounted how the interaction with Peller was entirely unplanned. While on a live session thanking fans for their support, the young influencer joined the stream.
“I didn’t even recognize the name at first. I declined twice before finally accepting. Then we started vibing. I saw an opportunity to turn it into a promotional moment, so I joked about flying him to London,” Stonebwoy explained.
What was intended to be a fun and engaging moment quickly turned sour as some Ghanaians took to social media to criticize the interaction.
Stonebwoy lamented that instead of capitalizing on the positive energy, he and his team had to spend time defending the moment, ultimately losing its momentum.
“Instead of pushing the moment forward, we now have to defend it. And by the time we finish defending, the momentum is lost,” he said.
This incident is not the first time Stonebwoy has faced unwarranted criticism from his compatriots.
He recalled a similar situation at the Grammys, where he introduced himself to a global star, only to be ridiculed by some Ghanaians instead of being celebrated for seizing a networking opportunity.
“It’s interesting how the negative narrative always becomes more popular. That’s the sad part. We should be elevating our own people, not dragging them down,” he emphasized.
Stonebwoy’s comments highlight a broader issue within Ghana’s entertainment industry, where artists often face harsh criticism and negativity from their own people, even as they strive to put the country on the global map.
He urged Ghanaians to change their mindset and rally behind their artists, noting that every positive step taken by a Ghanaian artist benefits the entire music industry and the nation as a whole.
“We should be supportive of our own. When we win, Ghana wins,” he stated.
Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has said he is poised to represent the former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority, Gifty Oware-Mensah, in court if the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) fails to release her or arraign her before the law court.
He said failure to apply the 48-hour rule is a violation of Gifty Oware-Mensah’s rights.
According to him, although he wants Gifty Oware-Mensah to face justice, it is unfair for her to be detained for more than 48 hours, thereby urging the NIB to follow due process.
Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoint, the legal practitioner said, “If the NIB breaches the 48-hour rule, I will be happy to represent Gifty Oware-Mensah. As citizens, we all must jump in because we don’t know what could happen tomorrow.”
He added, “The fact that I want her to face justice doesn’t mean we should keep her beyond 48 hours. No, let’s not do that. It’s not worth it. She voluntarily returned to the country. If she intended to abscond, she wouldn’t have come back. So, once she is here, let’s follow due process.”
Gifty Oware-Mensah was detained by the National Intelligence Bureau on Saturday, March 8, 2025, in connection with an alleged payroll fraud at the National Service Authority.
Her arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into a ghost-name scandal that has drawn national attention.
On February 4, 2025, a video emerged showing Gifty Oware-Mensah arriving at the Kotoka International Airport after news broke that she had gone into hiding.
According to sources, she was in Morocco with the female national team in her capacity as Chairperson of the Management Committee.

Daughter of a Murderer, Sit Down: Ghana’s Media Condemns Callous Dismissal of MP’s Concerns
News Hub Creator6h
A wave of condemnation has erupted across Ghana’s media following a controversial remark directed at Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Adwoa Safo. Awudu Mahama, Managing Editor of The Custodian, has voiced strong disapproval of the phrase, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down,” reportedly uttered by an unnamed individual in the parliamentary chamber. The comment, which many view as deeply offensive, has sparked widespread outrage and reignited the debate about the standards of decorum in Ghanaian politics.
In a strongly worded editorial, Mahama condemned the remark as not only an insult to Safo but also an affront to all women in Ghanaian politics. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful and inclusive atmosphere within a democratic society, stressing that such language should never be tolerated in a legislature. Mahama argued that allowing this type of rhetoric would set a dangerous precedent, suggesting that personal attacks and inflammatory language are acceptable in political discourse. This, he warned, would send a harmful message to the public and to aspiring female leaders.
The incident highlights a disturbing trend of personal attacks becoming more common in political discussions in Ghana. While robust debate is essential in a democracy, the use of abusive rhetoric undermines the integrity of political dialogue. Mahama’s call for accountability highlights the need for stronger measures to protect MPs and ensure that political debates remain respectful.
Additionally, the situation underscores the challenges women face in Ghanaian politics. Safo’s experience reflects the disproportionate pressures and personal attacks women encounter in a male-dominated political sphere. This incident has opened the door for a broader conversation on the need for reforms to ensure that the political environment is more inclusive and respectful for all leaders, regardless of gender.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced plans to demolish all structures encroaching on the right of way along the Ashaiman Roundabout to Akosombo Junction corridor.
He noted that these structures, particularly in the Ashaiman area, have significantly hindered the smooth progress of the project.
The road project, which began in May 2022 with a 30-month completion timeline, was initially set to be completed in November 2024. However, it stalled in July 2023 due to the government’s Debt Exchange Programme.
During an inspection visit on Saturday, March 8, Minister Agbodza expressed frustration over the slow progress.
“People are frustrated about the project because when you get to Shai Hills and they see work going on nicely and work is stalled here, they worry. Every project must have a method statement, and I won’t have approved such a work.”
The contractor, however, attributed the delays in the Ashaiman section to the lack of access to the right of way.

Ghana at the present has adopted the cedi notes and coins as its legal tender
Some few years after Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule, the country adopted the cedi notes and pesewa coins to replace the Ghana pounds; shillings and pence, on July 19, 1965.
Prior to this, the West African Currency Board was first adopted and used mainly for trading purposes across the sub-region in the early 1940s, all through to 1954.
Ghana at the present has adopted the cedi notes and coins as its legal tender.
But how did the country achieve this feat over the years?
In 1957, Ghana made the decision to formally leave the British Colonial Monetary System and adopt the widely accepted decimal system.
The newly-adopted cedi notes and pesewa coins at the time were equivalent to eight shillings and four pence (8s 4p) and bore the portrait of the country’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The name ‘cedi’ was however derived from the Akan word ‘sedie’ meaning cowrie – a shell form of currency that gained popularity and wider circulation in the later part of the 19th century.
The ‘pesewa’ on the hand represented the smallest denomination of the gold-dust currency regime and its name was chosen to replace the British colonial penny.
The host of People & Places on GhanaWeb TV, Wonder Ami Hagan, got access, in 2022, to the newly-refurbished Ghana National Museum, which had specimen of currency notes from the colonial period to date.
A tour guide at the museum recounted that during independence, Ghana had its own currency which has since changed in phases until July 1, 2007, when the last currency was redenominated and changed by the John Agyekum Kufuor administration adpoting the mantra “the value will be the same”.
While some still argue on whether the cedi re-denomination indeed ensured its value remained the same, some analysts have said the move rather put the local currency back against the US Dollar.
The redenomination meant that about that ten thousand cedis is now equivalent to one Ghana cedi.
The government and the Bank of Ghana at the time said the re-denomination was due to the increasing difficulty in maintaining accounting and statistical records.
It further associated problems with accounting and data processing software as part of its reasons for the move.

Accra, March 9, GNA – Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has vowed to provide the institutional and fiscal supports necessary for the full implementation of the Affirmative Action Act.
She pledged to address the financial barriers that hindered women’s ability to contest for political positions, to increase their representation.
The Minister made these commitments at the Africa Women Political Leadership Summit 2025, in Accra, on Saturday, on the theme: Women and Politics in Africa: Progress, Challenges and Prospects.”
Organised by the Africa Governance Centre, in partnership with the Gender Ministry, the objective of the Summit is to drive meaningful policy dialogue, inspire leadership, and chart a roadmap for advancing gender-inclusive governance across the continent.
The Affirmative Action Act was passed in 2024, about two decades after its initiation, and sought to, among other things, achieve equality in the political, social, economic, educational and cultural spheres of the Ghanaian society.
However, nearly a year after its passage, implementation of the Act is yet to take full flight.
Dr Naa Momo Lartey, while acknowledging the passage of the Act as a significant stride in the country’s effort to achieve equality, said its impact would only be realised if it was fully implemented.
She noted that globally, various commitments such as the Beijing Declaration in 1995, had failed to achieve the required impact due to the lack of political commitment at national levels.
For instance, a 2022 report by the African Development Bank on women’s participation in leadership in Africa revealed an uneven progress, with only about 25 per cent of women holding parliamentary seats across the continent.
The Minister, therefore, expressed government’s willingness to ensure the full implementation of the Affirmative Action Act by ensuring the availability of the necessary institutional and fiscal support.
“Passing a law is only the first step,” she said, adding: “Its impact depends on our vigilance as women leaders and sustained optimism to ensure the law does not stay shelved in the archives.”
“We must ensure that the eventual law becomes a reality in the daily lives of Ghanaian women because equitable gender representation is a win for progressive national development.”
Additionally, the Minister pledged to create mentorship programmes, strengthen and enhance partnerships with civil society organisations, educational institutions and international bodies to achieve the desired results.
She called for the end to structural inequalities, cultural barriers and gender biases, which served as limitations to women’s ability to thrive.
Madam Edite Ten Jua, the Executive Secretary, African Political Parties Initiative – Africa Governance Centre, called for a more inclusive political landscape, stressing that democracy could only thrive with full participation of women.
“It is imperative for good governance, economic development and social justice, because a more inclusive political landscape benefits not just women but entire political ecosystem and nations, fostering policies that are more representative, more responsive and more resilient,” she emphasised.
Madam Jua urged women to continue to demand for substantive leadership roles, real decision-making power and seek systemic reforms to barriers that hindered their progress.
“Token representation is not enough,” she said.
“Let us move beyond pledge and towards policies, beyond discussions and towards decisive action.”
Contributing to a panel discussion at the Summit, on the topic: “Affirmative Action in Africa: Unpacking its Façade and Potential for Women in Politics,” Mrs Beatrice Annangfio, a Presidential Staffer, identified socialisation like cultural norms that sought to limit women to the kitchen, and stereotypes as key factors impeding women in realising their full potential.
She stressed on the need for women to make themselves available to be considered when the opportunity arose.
Ms Becky Enyonam Ahadzi, the Coordinator, Affirmative Action Coalition of Ghana, urged political parties to internalise the Affirmative Action Act and adopt its measures to empower women in their parties.
She called for the amendment of the 1992 Constitution to include a gender-specific quota for women.
