Volta NDC grassroots warn of apathy in 2028 over appointment snubs

0

The grassroots of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have warned of voter apathy in the Volta Region in the 2028 general elections due to the neglect of President Mahama to appoint Volta Regional NDC Executives and other stalwarts to key public positions.

According to them, the refusal by the John-Mahama-led-administration to reward the region with appointments for its contribution to the electoral fortunes of the governing party has left the grassroots disgruntled.

Addressing a press conference in Ho, the Convener of New Voter Forum, Edmond Amos Ameamu asserted that though some people of Volta origin have been appointed, they are not connected in any way to the party in the region, and did not render support in any form during the 2024 electioneering.

He added that the continuous neglect of NDC stalwarts who are familiar with the grassroots in appointments will have dire consequences on the party’s vision to maintain power beyond 2028.

Mr. Ameamu supported a call by the Volta Renaissance Forum on President Mahama to consider appointing party fateful who worked and are identified by the grassroots in its stronghold to appease them.

“In our candid view, we believe the Petitioners have a strong case which President Mahama needs to treat urgently with the view of appointing faithful NDC party executives and activists who have strong links with the grassroots. This we believe will go a long way to motivate the base of the party and prevent voter apathy ahead of 2028 elections”, he stressed.

He questioned the government and party’s decision to appoint “an alien” as the acting Volta Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Scheme, describing it as “bogus, a slap in the face of hard work, abuse of office and betrayal of trust.”

“The grassroots, who worked so hard day and night to secure this emphatic victory have been patient in the midst of appointment neglect. What we will not however take is the reckless imposition of aliens who did nothing to help us win the election”, he added.

Mr. Ameamu recommended the party’s hierarchy to convene a meeting with the concerned stakeholders and give a fair hearing aimed at finding a lasting solution to their concerns.

He further opined that the party leadership and the Regional Minister should collaborate and ensure NDC activists are appointed to avert “mass action including takeovers, demonstrations, picketing among others in the coming weeks”.

He also entreated the local government leadership in the region to devise measures to create job opportunities for the teeming NDC supporters “to motivate the base of the party which is almost becoming disgruntled.”

He, therefore issued a week ultimatum for their concerns to be addressed, with emphasis on the reversal of the appointment of the Acting Volta Regional Director of NHIS.

He emphasized that “failure to which we shall take our civil action against this unpopular decision.”

Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passes on; Bretuo Family informs Otumfuo

0

In accordance with Ashanti traditional rites, the Bretuo family and the Asante Mampong Traditional Council have officially informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the passing of the Paramount Chief of the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away last week after a short illness.

He was enstooled as Mamponghene on August 25, 1996, succeeding his direct uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II, who abdicated the stool.

Privately known as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, Daasebre was born on December 31, 1939. He was an alumnus of Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon.

Before ascending the Mampong stool, Daasebre served as the Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi and practiced as a lawyer.

During his 26-year reign, he brought significant development to the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area and was recognized for his efforts to maintain peace and stability. Notably, he reigned without encountering any chieftaincy disputes — a rare achievement in the history of the area.

According to records at Mampong, he remains the only Paramount Chief installed since 1930 under whom the Traditional Area did not experience any chieftaincy disputes or litigations.

Traditional authorities and family members, dressed in black attire, officially conveyed news of his passing to the Asantehene and the Asantehemaa in line with custom.

The Queenmorher of the Mampong Traditional Area, Nana Agyakoma Difie, and the Queenmother of the Ejisu Yaa Asantewaa II were part of the delegation.

In line with Asante custom, the Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty has officially informed the Asantehene on the passing of Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

The solemn announcement at the Manhyia Palace, led by Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, marks the end of an era for one of the most respected traditional leaders in the country.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu, who until his death served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, was the esteemed occupant of the Silver Stool, a position of immense traditional significance in the Asante Kingdom.

His role placed him as the second-in-command in the Ashanti traditional hierarchy, often acting on behalf of the Asantehene in key matters of custom.

Daasebere Osei Bonsu, who was born on 31 December 1939, passed on at age 86 and reigned for 26 years.

Until his ascension to the throne, he was known as Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, a lawyer and an economist by profession who later served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Known for his diplomacy, and unwavering dedication, Daasebre Osei Bonsu’s legacy spans decades of service both to his people and to Ghana’s broader chieftaincy institution.

The news of his demise was formally communicated to the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace, reflecting the deeply rooted customs and reverence accorded royals in the Asante Kingdom.

His last public appearance was during the last Akwasidae held at Mampong where he rebuked some NDC supporters for planting tribal division in their protest against the selection of an MCE for the Mampong Municipal Assembly.

Details of his funeral arrangements are expected to be disclosed in the coming days.

Kofi Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has praised Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), for his positive views on sports in Ghana.

Dr. Motsepe was in Accra over the weekend to attend the 2025 Africa School Championship, held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. After meeting with Dr. Motsepe, Adams shared his thoughts on the CAF president’s strong connection to Ghana and his commitment to the development of sports in the country.

“I believe apart from South Africa, where he comes from, the next country he loves is Ghana. He has good thoughts about Ghana in terms of football and beyond the game,” Adams told Asempa FM. He emphasized that Dr. Motsepe’s interest extends beyond just football, highlighting the president’s broader commitment to sports.

“Despite showing a strong interest in football, he also has an interest in other sports, which is a good thing,” Adams added. The Minister also noted that Dr. Motsepe encouraged Ghana to continue focusing on grassroots sports development. “He encouraged us to continue investing in other grassroots sports,” he stated.

Bawumia is not shifting blame – Nana B

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has defended the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against claims that he is using the ongoing “Thank You Tour” to whitewash himself.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Monday, April 28, Nana B dismissed these accusations.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia has not sought to distance himself from the previous government’s shortcomings but has consistently acknowledged his role in the administration.

“I don’t think so. It’s not true… Throughout his speeches, he kept using the word ‘we’ — we, the government. He didn’t exclude himself. He was recounting events that contributed to our loss in the 2024 elections,” he stated.

Nana B explained that Dr. Bawumia’s remarks, including references to unpopular policies like the E-Levy, the emission tax, and the betting tax, were not new criticisms but issues that had already been raised within the party and even publicly acknowledged by key figures.

“Even I am on record criticising some of these policies. These are matters that clearly affected our fortunes in 2024.”

When asked specifically about the purpose of the “Thank You Tour” — amid suspicions that it serves to polish Bawumia’s image — Nana B insisted that the tour was a party-driven initiative.

“It’s not true that the ‘Thank You Tour’ is meant to whitewash anyone. The tour was organised by the party and the 2024 flagbearer. It involves all the former aspirants. We go out, thank our supporters, and engage with the party base. It’s important to explain why we lost, apologise where necessary, and rebuild unity.”

He emphasised that the aim is to galvanise the party’s supporters and prepare for future battles, adding that the tour has so far been successful across several regions.

Nana B’s defence comes as some elements within the NPP accuse the former Vice President of failing to fully own up to the party’s historic defeat in the 2024 elections.

Critics also claim that Bawumia, through some of his utterances — such as blaming the party’s loss on the arrogance of power and unpopular decisions taken by the Akufo-Addo administration — is indirectly denigrating former President Akufo-Addo’s legacy.

During a recent stop in the Western Region, Dr. Bawumia attributed the NPP’s loss to public dissatisfaction with some of the government’s decisions, highlighting the dangers of ignoring public sentiment.

Basintale Vows To End ‘Unfair’ Zoomlion Contract

0

Malik Basintale

The Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has pledged not to renew the agency’s longstanding sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited under its current terms, following sharp criticisms from investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.

In a Facebook post last week, Manasseh issued a strong warning to Basintale, describing the proposed renewal as a “theft” and declaring that the deal “stinks to the heavens.”

He revealed that although sanitation workers under the contract are allotted GH¢850 monthly, Zoomlion allegedly retains GH¢600 as management fees, leaving only GH¢250 for the sweepers—a figure many have slammed as exploitative and inhumane.

The contract, which reportedly expired in September 2024, had previously faced opposition from former YEA CEO under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, Kofi Agyapong. Agyapong, before his exit, had resisted attempts to renew the contract, citing a lack of accountability and transparency, and had formally notified Zoomlion of the contract’s termination.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Malik Basintale responded to these concerns, promising decisive action to protect the welfare of Ghanaian workers.

“For seven years and nine months, the NPP renewed the Zoomlion contract in its current state, paying the Ghanaian youth/worker GH¢250,” Basintale wrote, adding “H.E. John Dramani Mahama came to review, reset, and bring Ghana back on track. This includes ensuring that every worker is paid satisfactorily for the work done.”

He vowed: “I promise on my honour, as I stand by the grave of my late dad, not to renew the contract in its current state or form. It is evil for the previous government to have committed to this and I shall stop it.”

Basintale emphasised that he could not, in good conscience, accept a situation where workers — including his own relatives — were paid such meager wages. He invited the public to join him live on Facebook Thursday evening to discuss the matter and the way forward.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus has thrown its support behind the YEA’s autonomy in the matter.

In a statement issued on April 25, Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, stated that Parliament’s Sanitation Committee had not been authorised to interfere with YEA’s decision regarding the Zoomlion contract.

“The Chairman of the Committee has reported to me that, contrary to media reports, neither he nor any committee member has attempted to do any such thing,” Mr. Ayariga said.

He stressed that any comments by individual committee members appearing to defend the contract should be ignored, as they do not reflect the official position of Parliament or the Committee.

Mr. Ayariga also warned Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) against being coerced into sanitation contracts, reiterating that Parliament has ensured that 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund now goes directly to the assemblies to determine their own development priorities.

She said the government was allowing such apps to “go unchecked with extreme real-world consequences”.

A government spokesperson said child sexual abuse material was illegal and that there were plans for further offences for creating, possessing or distributing AI tools designed to create such content.

Take advantage of carbon market potential – Parliament advises businesses

0

By Albert Oppong-Ansah

Accra, April 28, GNA – The Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology say it is upbeat about the huge socio-economic potential in the carbon market, calling on businesses to tap into its prospects.

The Committee said the country could earn millions of dollars in taxes, fees, direct investment into innovative smart technology, create jobs through development projects for local communities, enhance local air quality, and build resilience to climate change.

The leadership made the call at the end of a two-day training on the progress of Ghana carbon market initiative, organised by the Carbon Market Office (CMO) of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA)for the committee members.

Mr Yaw Frimpong Addo, the Chairperson of the Committee, urged local businesses to take interest and identify opportunities in the carbon market value chain and participate fully.

“I am still learning about revenue streams the value chain offers and how local business participation will boost the economy. We should not lose our guard like we did in the cocoa sector where the beans are exported and the country makes less revenue,” he said.

“It is sad to know that out of the 70 projects presented to the CMO seeking approval, only about seven are initiatives from Ghanaians with the majority being foreigners. I acknowledge the technicalities involved in the market but the CMO officials are at hand to provide all the explanations businesses will need.”

Mr Addo, who is the Member of Parliament for Manso Adubia Constituency in the Ashanti Region, said the committee members would educate their fellow parliamentarians and constituents on the carbon market and the opportunities it presented to businesses.

The carbon market allows companies and countries to buy and sell carbon credits – permits that represent 1ton of greenhouse gas emissions reduced or removed or avoided from going into the atmosphere.

This system helps countries like Ghana to raise funds and enhance its climate ambition through mitigation activities while contributing to global emission reductions.

A recent report from the Office estimates that Ghana’s carbon market could attract more than one billion dollars in investment by 2030.

Professor Hamza Adam, the Ranking Member of the Committee, described the carbon market as an emerging economy that Ghana was well positioned to rake in revenue to contribute to the transformation of the economy.

He noted that the market was “pregnant” with projects including technology – based solutions such as clean cooking stoves, solar, and nature-based solutions.

Screenshot

“Our youth stand the chance of benefiting from capacity building to render services including conducting monitoring, reporting and verification services (MRV), which hither to would have been sublated to foreigners,” he said.

Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, stated that the carbon market was a huge opportunity to meet global climate obligations while building a resilient economy.

She said the CMO was committed to facilitating the scaling up of projects and increasing local participation in the growing carbon market ecosystem.

One of the key focus areas of the Office in 2025 was to assist local service providers in securing the necessary accreditation to operate within the carbon market space, she said.

She hinted that the Office was also taking deliberate steps to ensure that carbon projects were anchored in Ghana by promoting local manufacturing and assembling facilities.

As of December 2024, the CMO had received 70 project proposals focused on cutting emissions and promoting sustainable development.

Leading the pipeline of project is the clean-cooking initiative, which aims to distribute 9.1 million efficient stoves by 2030. It accounts for 26 of the proposals received so far.

Screenshot

Other proposals include three electric mobility projects, targeting the distribution of 120,160 electric bikes and vehicles.

Additionally, 15 projects centre on nature-based solutions, with others focusing on solar energy biochar, wastewater treatment, and electric vehicle initiatives.

Ghana has already signed bilateral agreements to trade carbon credits with Switzerland, Sweden, and Singapore.

It also has an agreement with South Korea, which is currently seeking Cabinet approval, while that of Liechtenstein is at the negotiation stage.

Film Piracy Saga: It’s embarrassing, you don’t know your job

Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega (L) and Sam George (R) Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega (L) and Sam George (R)

Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has taken a jab at the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, for stating that he would liaise with a colleague to address Nigerian actress Bimbo Ademoye’s concerns about film piracy in Ghana.

During a discussion on United Showbiz on April 27, 2025, Ziega said Sam George’s comment, indicating he would refer the matter to the minister responsible for overseeing television content, suggests he does not fully understand his own job description.

He emphasised that Sam George’s role gives him the power to oversee such a situation therefore the minister was wrong to state that he would channel the situation to a colleague minister.

“Which colleague minister is there to oversee television content? It could be he was writing agency instead of ministry. If that is the case, he should have come to correct the mistake. This is confusing because how can a minister of state do such a thing? He is responsible for such a role.

“President Mahama has changed most of the role and he should be aware. Our communication minister is Sam George and therefore all these things are under him. He is embarrassing us,” he said.

Background

In response to Nigerian actress Bimbo Ademoye’s Instagram rant, in which she tagged him amid accusations that Ghanaian TV stations are stealing and airing her content, Sam George said:

“My attention has been drawn to your post thanks to the tag. I would be raising the issue with my colleague minister responsible for overseeing television content. However, I wish to assure you that our government is very respectful of intellectual property rights and will ensure the protection of same.”

Bawumia not running from Akufo-Addo’s record – Opare-Ansah

0

Frederick Opare-Ansah, Campaign Manager for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 presidential election, has stated that the former Vice President has not distanced himself from the shortcomings of the previous government.

This comes amid concerns that Dr. Bawumia had sought to dissociate himself from the failings of the administration he served.

Speaking in an interview on Citi Prime News on Monday, April 28, Opare-Ansah said, “I am yet to hear the former Vice President and our flagbearer speak anywhere and dissociate himself from actions of government. He hasn’t done that anywhere.”

He emphasised that Bawumia’s frequent use of the pronoun “we” in his speeches reflects an acceptance of collective responsibility for the government’s actions.

“In all his speeches, the pronoun that has been used most widely has been ‘we.’ He tells them that all research has shown that, including the research conducted by people who went to the base of the constituency level, at the polling stations, to interact with the people, and what they have found is that we didn’t listen to them while we were in government.”

“They said we should reshuffle, but we did not reshuffle. He didn’t say you said Mr. A should reshuffle and Mr. A didn’t reshuffle. He said you said you don’t like the E-levy, and we did not listen to you. We brought E-levy,” Opare-Ansah pointed out.https://citinewsroom.com/2025/04/history-will-vindicate-akufo-addos-leadership-bawumia/

Ken Agyapong urges amnesty for former party members

0

A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ken Ohene Agyapong, has urged the party’s leadership to grant a general amnesty to all party members who were dismissed or who left the party due to internal strife as part of the party’s rebuilding exercise.

He specifically pleaded for such amnesty for the suspended former National Chairman of the party, Paul Afoko; former presidential aspirant, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, and a former National Women’s Organiser of the party, Otiko Afisa Djaba.

Mr Agyapong, the immediate past Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, said the party would need everyone on board to achieve the ultimate goal of winning power back in 2028, but stressed that the healing process must begin by extending an olive branch to all party members, especially those who had been suspended or who left on their own for one reason or another to come back into the fold.

Mr Agyapong, who joined the 2024 flag bearer of the party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for the “Thank You” tour of the Western Region, said the party must quickly put behind the 2024 electoral defeat and initiate the necessary rebuilding processes.

Addressing a packed audience that included party executives, grassroots members and students in Takoradi last Saturday, he explained that his call for forgiveness and unity was based on biblical wisdom.

The auditorium was filled to capacity with party supporters from Shama, Sekondi, Takoradi, Effia, Kwesimintsim, Essikadu-Ketan and Wassa East.

The team also included the National Chairman of the party, Stephen Ayesu Ntim; the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong; some former and  current Members of Parliament (MPs) and other bigwigs of the party.

Referencing Matthew 12:25 and Mark 3:25 that generally state that a house divided against itself cannot stand, he said uniting towards 2028 was non-negotiable.

Suspensions, dismissals

While Mr Afoko was suspended prior to the party winning the 2016 presidential election, Mr Kyerematen and Ms Djaba parted ways with the party under different circumstances, with Mr Kyerematen quitting to contest the 2024 presidential election in pursuit of the Movement for Change agenda.

Besides the three prominent personalities, the party also dismissed some members, including  former MP for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, and hundreds of others accused by the party of acting in ways that undermined the party’s electoral fortunes.

The list includes former Communications Director of the party, Yaw Buaben Asamoa; former Deputy Information Minister, Nana Ohene Ntow, and others who joined Mr Kyerematen’s Movement for Change.

Mr Agyapong, who contested the party’s 2024 flagbearership, said without unity, even the most powerful political organisations would falter, emphasising that rebuilding the NPP must begin by healing old wounds and reaching out to those who were once part of the party but had since been pushed out due to unresolved issues.

“It is time to let go of past grudges and focus on what truly matters: the success of the party and the future of our country,” he added.

Mr Agyapong said such political amnesty must not be limited to only high-profile former members of the party, but should also encompass grassroots members who had been expelled or alienated over the years.

He also called for the reintegration of polling station executive, constituency officers and other party members who had been expelled over the years, urging the party to heal the rift at all levels.

“These individuals have families, friends and significant influence within their communities.

Some may not be with us today, not because they abandoned the NPP but because we abandoned them when grievances were left unresolved.

Bringing them back into the fold will strengthen our base and ultimately increase our chances of electoral victory,” he stressed.
He also appealed to disgruntled former members to accept the olive branch and return home for the unity and rebuilding process.

Reasons for defeat

Dr Bawumia outlined a number of factors that contributed to the party’s defeat in the elections, mentioning the government’s failure to reshuffle ministerial appointees for eight years, the passage of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) Bill, poor economic performance, high cost of living and arrogance of power among government appointees.

“When you study all the reports we have so far, certain factors were highlighted.

These include the high cost of living; the prices of goods and services went up and left many Ghanaians struggling.

Another factor that was highlighted is the arrogance of power. We were not willing to listen.

“The party members told us to conduct a reshuffle, but after eight years we didn’t listen. The party members told us they didn’t want E-levy, but we implemented it.

Things were bad, and we were not able to pay NABCO (Nation Builders Corps employees), those employed under Youth and Afforestation, caterers and others were also not being paid,” he said.

Dr Bawumia said a huge part of the party’s support base who did not vote accounted for the party’s defeat in six regions, namely Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Central and Bono.

He said in the Western Region alone, 169,000 supporters refused to vote, while 234,000 in Central and 100,000 in Bono also declined to vote.

He said the party’s votes only appreciated in North East, his home region.

Religion/tribalism

Dr Bawumia said religion and tribalism could not have affected his candidacy, arguing that in the Western Region his votes appreciated compared with the parliamentary candidates’, citing Ahanta West, Amenfi West, Essikadu-Ketan, Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Sekondi as examples.

He expressed optimism that the party would bounce back in 2028.

He consequently called on party supporters from the polling stations to the national level to remain steadfast, united and resolute to recapture power.

NPP’s ‘Thank You Tour’ is unravelling into blame-shifting, and internal strife

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has expressed his displeasure with happenings in the ongoing ‘Thank You Tour’ of the party.

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb, Boakye Agyarko asserted that the tour, which was supposed to unite the party following its defeat in the 2024 general election, is turning out to be divisive.

He pointed out that not only are pronouncements during the tour dividing members of the party, they are also making the party unpopular among Ghanaians.

“The ongoing Thank You Tour, envisioned as a beacon of hope and a rallying point to reignite the spirit of our faithful and supporters, is unfortunately veering off course. What was intended to restore our party’s shine and reconnect us with the grassroots is instead unravelling into bouts of discord, blame-shifting, and internal strife.

“This regrettable turn of events threatens to inflict serious collateral damage on the very fabric of our party. More worryingly, it is steadily eroding the goodwill and trust we have worked so hard to cultivate among the Ghanaian people,” he wrote.

Boakye Agyarko, who was a Minister for Energy under the government of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, therefore called on the leadership of the NPP to reassess the operationalisation of the ‘Thank You Tour’ before it causes the party irreversible damage.

“In light of these unfortunate developments, I am earnestly calling on the leadership of our party to act swiftly and decisively. It is time to apply the brakes and reassess the direction of the Thank You Tour. We must pull back from what increasingly looks like an imminent collision course and chart a path that upholds the unity, dignity, and forward-looking spirit of our tradition.

“A carefully recalibrated approach, one that fosters genuine reconciliation, solidarity, and purposeful engagement, is urgently needed. Let us seize this moment to renew our collective resolve and ensure that the mission of the Thank You Tour is accomplished in a manner worthy of our party’s proud legacy,” he added.

His remarks come following statements made by leading figures of the NPP, including the presidential candidate of the party for the 2024 election, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on the reasons why the NPP lost the election.

Dr Bawumia, addressing a gathering as part of the NPP’s ‘Thank You Tour’, said that certain policies by the previous Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, which he was Vice President of, led to their defeat in the 2024 general election.

He explained that the arrogance of power that made the government insensitive to the plights of Ghanaians incurred people’s wrath, causing them to vote against the party massively.

The NPP flagbearer also indicated that the rising nature of inflation during Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government tenure, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) as well as the introduction of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) and the $58 million uncompleted National Cathedral project, played a major role in making the party unpopular.

Following the former Vice President’s remarks, some members of the NPP have accused him of shifting blame for his personal ambitions.

Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security under the Akufo-Addo administration, condemned Dr Bawumia’s attempts to disassociate himself from controversial policies such as the E-Levy and the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

He pointed out that Dr Bawumia remained silent during the implementation of these policies, despite his role as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team, only to later claim opposition when seeking political advantage.

Francis-Xavier Sosu honours NDC branch executives, launches GHC1m Welfare Fund

0

The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, on Sunday, 27 April, led a grand ceremony to honour the hardworking branch executives who played a key role in securing a resounding parliamentary and presidential victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency during the last elections.

The colourful event, held at the Astro Turf in Madina, brought together 3,889 party executives, including Ward Coordinators, Secretaries, Organizers, Zonal Leaders, Assembly Members, and Unit Committee Members from all 321 polling stations in the constituency. The celebration served as a platform to express appreciation for their dedication, loyalty, and tireless work during the campaigns.

In his speech, Mr. Sosu outlined a range of awards and incentives designed to reward excellence and encourage sustained commitment at the grassroots. “For example, branches that recorded the highest votes will receive special awards,” he announced. Prizes for outstanding performers included motorcycles, brand-new laptops, tricycles, foreign trips, scholarships, job placement opportunities, and cash prizes.

“We are not just giving out awards; we are also recognizing the sacrifices made by our grassroots soldiers. Our politics is not going to be transactional — it will be transformational,” Sosu emphasized, reinforcing his vision for a new style of leadership within the NDC.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the launch of a One Million Ghana Cedis (GHC 1,000,000.00) Welfare Scheme for all branch executives under the “Madina Potwesi” initiative. The fund, with an initial deposit of GHC 100,000, is aimed at providing medical and emergency support for grassroots members who continue to sacrifice for the party. The MP appealed to well-wishers and philanthropists to contribute generously to the fund to ensure its sustainability.

Mr. Sosu also shared emotional moments recalling the tragic loss of dedicated campaigners during the election period, paying tribute to Nathaniel and others who made the ultimate sacrifice. He reiterated the importance of supporting party members not only politically but also in their personal welfare, underscoring his deep commitment to the NDC’s grassroots.

The event also celebrated financiers, donors, and other key contributors whose support was instrumental to the NDC’s electoral success in Madina. Many party members described the occasion as a historic milestone in recognizing the crucial role of branch executives in political victory.

The grand ceremony concluded with music, dance, and a renewed pledge by all members present to work even harder for the NDC’s future successes.

Kissi Agyebeng opposes move to hand over OSP mandate to CHRAJ

0

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has firmly opposed proposals to transfer his office’s anti-corruption mandate to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), maintaining that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) must remain Ghana’s primary institution for combating corruption.

Addressing a Constitutional Review Committee forum, Mr. Agyebeng rejected what he termed “misguided” calls to abolish the OSP and reassign its functions to CHRAJ.

Several individuals have criticised the OSP, claiming that it duplicates the functions of the Attorney General and other investigative bodies.

This includes an Economist with the University for Development Studies (UDS), Dr. Michael Ayamga Adongo, who argues that the OSP is making a mockery of fighting corruption and corruption-related offences.

Again, the Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, argues that the Office of the Special Prosecutor should be scrapped because he believes the anti-corruption body has been ineffective.

However, Mr. Agyebeng holds a different view.

“I’ve heard suggestions that CHRAJ should be given this mandate. Plainly speaking, that won’t work. Let CHRAJ focus on its human rights mandate while we establish the OSP constitutionally as the lead institution for anti-corruption efforts,” he stated.

Mr. Agyebeng warned that dismantling the OSP would significantly undermine Ghana’s anti-corruption progress.

He explained that the current arrangement, where the OSP focuses on corruption, CHRAJ deals with human rights, and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) tackles economic crimes, has proven effective since the OSP began operations in 2018.

“Under this system, CHRAJ collaborates closely with the OSP, while both institutions work with EOCO as it focuses on economic crimes,” Mr. Agyebeng explained. “Our experience since 2018 demonstrates that this arrangement works effectively.”

The OSP was established in 2018 as the gold standard and flagship specialised independent anti-corruption institution in Ghana in pursuance of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

The OSP has the objective of investigating and prosecuting specific cases of alleged or suspected corruption and corruption-related offences in the public and private sectors, recovering the proceeds of such acts by disgorging illicit and unexplained wealth, and taking steps to prevent corruption.

As of Monday, April 28, the OSP stated on its website that it had achieved four prosecutions, recovered over GHS 3 million, and saved the country over GHS 135 million.

AI for Faulty Transformers: AI4SD project targets Ghana’s power reliability issues

0

Ghana’s persistent electricity reliability challenges may soon see a technology boost as tech developers work to introduce and harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The “AI for Energy” project under the Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (AI4SD) initiative is collaborating with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to predict transformer faults and schedule preventive maintenance through the use of AI.

The AI4SD Energy theme lead, Prof. Francis Kemausuor, revealed that the goal is to reduce downtime caused by transformer failures, a major contributor to power outages.

“Transformers are critical not only for electricity distribution but also for industrial operations. When they fail, the resulting downtime is expensive and affects thousands of homes and businesses,” Prof. Kemausuor noted.

The project, still in its early stages, is currently training AI models using publicly available data from academic and industrial sources.

These models are being tested to determine the suitable model for use with Ghana’s grid data.

“We have requested for data from GRIDCo. Once we receive it, we shall test the models using the GRIDCo data” Prof. Kemausuor said.

According to the Energy theme lead, the collaboration with GRIDCo involves access to several years of transformer performance data.

He added that, “The initial plan is to pilot the system using a few transformers”. “If successful, the technology will be scaled across the national grid”

“We’re looking for transformers with long-term operational data. That history is key for AI systems to identify patterns that can lead to faults.”

Explaining how the system would work, Prof. Francis Kemausuor gave the analogy of a mobile phone overheating.

“Let’s say your phone shouldn’t operate in a temperature beyond 50 degrees Celsius. If it does repeatedly, it might break down. A transformer has similar parameters. If we can track and analyze those using sensors and AI, we can prevent failures before they happen,” he explained.

The initiative is also looking outward, hoping to learn from international examples.

“There are companies in France and Finland already doing this. We want to visit them, study their systems, and see what can be adapted for Ghana,” he said.

Prof. Kemausuor acknowledged the support of the French government through the French Embassy in Ghana, which is backing the AI4SD initiative.

He also extended an invitation to local AI experts to collaborate on the project.

“This work is a collective effort. Our team includes young engineers and computer scientists who are gaining valuable skills along the way. We’re excited about the potential to improve electricity reliability for Ghanaians using AI.”

Deputy CEO of the GTA, Abeiku Santana (M) with the Bus Stop Boyz Deputy CEO of the GTA, Abeiku Santana (M) with the Bus Stop Boyz

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in strategic collaboration with the youth-led volunteer group Bus Stop Boyz, spearheaded a massive clean-up exercise at Nationalism Park (adjacent to the Accra Sports Stadium and Independence Square).

The event marked a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and tourism sustainability in Ghana’s capital.

The impactful activity was led by the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Gilbert Abeiku Santana Aggrey, who was joined by Jones Aruna Nelson, Director of Corporate Affairs, and Nana Agyenim Boateng, Director of Administration.

Together with Bus Stop Boyz and local volunteers, the team undertook a rigorous cleaning effort to restore the beauty and cleanliness of one of Ghana’s symbolic national spaces.

To show appreciation for their civic dedication, GTA commended the patriotic drive of the Bus Stop Boyz to keep Ghana’s public spaces clean and vibrant.

Speaking to the media, Gilbert Abeiku Santana Aggrey emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration to maintain and preserve Ghana’s heritage landmarks:

“We call on the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly and all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to prioritise the cleanliness, safety, and eco-friendliness of our historic structures. Under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, GTA is fully committed to protecting, marketing, and maintaining all tourism sites to offer a world-class experience to every visitor,” he said.

Established under Act 817 2011 and further strengthened by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2393 in 2019, the Ghana Tourism Authority is mandated to register, license, and promote tourist sites and attractions across the country.

While ownership and direct management of many sites fall under entities such as the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), the Forestry Commission, traditional authorities, and private stakeholders, GTA continues to play a critical leadership role in shaping and marketing Ghana’s tourism experience.

“Tourism is a collective responsibility,” Gilbert Abeiku Santana Aggrey noted. “We urge government agencies, the private sector, traditional leaders, civil society, and local communities to join hands in safeguarding our natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.”

This clean-up campaign is part of GTA’s broader vision to promote responsible tourism, foster environmental consciousness, and revitalise tourism infrastructure, ensuring Ghana’s attractions remain accessible, attractive, and globally competitive.

Can Mahama run for presidency for a 3rd time?

0

President John Dramani Mahama during his swearing-in on January 7, 2025 President John Dramani Mahama during his swearing-in on January 7, 2025

GhanaWeb Feature by Ishmael Batoma:

The General Secretary of the largest opposition political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has alleged that there are plans to enable President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.

He asserted that the plan revolves around the interpretation of Article 66 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which talks about the presidential term limit.

But is it possible? Can President Mahama, who is serving his second term as president, run for office again?

First of all, what does the constitution say about the presidential term limit?

Article 66(2)

Article 66 of the 1992 Constitution categorically states that elected presidents can only serve two terms, with a term being a period of four years.

“(1) A person elected as President shall, subject to clause (3) of this article, hold office for a term of four years beginning from the date on which he is sworn in as President.

“(2) A person shall not be elected to hold office as President of Ghana for more than two terms,” section 1 and 2 of Article 66 states.

So, the keywords in this constitutional provision are “elected president” and “two terms.”

President Mahama has been elected to serve as president of Ghana twice, and he is allowed to serve for two terms.

Having already served his first term of 4 years between 2013 and 2016, Mahama can only be president till January 7, 2029, when his second term ends.

So, there is no ambiguity in what the law on the term of office of the president says.

However, one of the things being thrown about regarding the law is it being for only presidents who served their two terms in succession. Mahama is the only two-term president in the history of the 4th Republic of Ghana who did not serve consecutive terms.

But there is no mention of the phrase “successive term”, as some are asserting, which would mean that because Mahama did not serve two continuous terms, he can run for president again.

Is there a way Mahama can be elected president again after his second term?

The only way President John Dramani Mahama can be elected into the office of the president again after his second term is if Article 66 of the constitution is amended.

Article 66 is under Chapter 8 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which is an entrenched provision. Unlike other unentrenched provisions of the constitution, which can be easily amended by a parliamentary majority, amending entrenched provisions is very rigorous.

President Mahama could have easily amended Article 66 of the constitution to give himself more terms in office, that is, if he is even entertaining such thoughts, because of the super majority (183 out of 276 seats in the House) the NDC has in Parliament.

However, as pointed out earlier, Article 66 is an entrenched provision and will require the say of the people of Ghana to be amended.

In other words, only Ghanaians can give Mahama a third or more term in office.

For an entrenched provision to be amended, it must gain at least 75% support in a referendum in which more than 40% of registered voters take part.

Below are the exact words of the 1992 Constitution for the amendment of entrenched provisions:

(2) A bill for the amendment of an entrenched provision shall, before Parliament proceeds to consider it, be referred by the Speaker to the Council of State for its advice, and the Council of State shall render advice on the bill within thirty days after receiving it.

(3) The bill shall be published in the Gazette but shall not be introduced into Parliament until the expiry of six months after the publication in the Gazette under this clause.

(4) After the bill has been read the first time in Parliament it shall not be proceeded with further unless it has been submitted to a referendum held throughout Ghana and at least forty percent of the persons entitled to vote, voted at the referendum and at least seventy-five percent of the persons who voted cast their votes in favour of the passing of the bill.

(5) Where the bill is approved at the referendum, Parliament shall pass it.

(6) Where a bill for the amendment of an entrenched provision has been passed by Parliament in accordance with this article, the President shall assent to it.

In conclusion, there is no way Mahama can serve for a third term under the current constitution, unless the people of Ghana want him to.

Meet the three Ghanaian football administrators who occupied CAF vice presidential roles

L-R: Ohene Djan, Kwesi Nyantakyi and Kurt Okraku L-R: Ohene Djan, Kwesi Nyantakyi and Kurt Okraku

GhanaWeb Feature by Benjamin Sackey

Three astute Ghanaian football administrators have held vice presidential roles at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), marking a significant achievement for Ghana on the continental stage.

These personalities include Kurt Okraku, the most recent appointee, alongside Kwesi Nyantakyi and the late Ohene Djan.

This article highlights the roles these individuals played during their tenure as CAF vice presidents

Ohene Djan

Legendary Ghanaian football administrator Ohene Djan occupied the role of CAF vice president during the presidency of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, beginning in January 1963.

His achievements include founding the Black Stars, establishing the Ghana League, and securing Ghana’s affiliation with both CAF and FIFA.

In July 1960, Dr Nkrumah elevated Djan to the ministerial position of “Director of Sports,” making him the overall head of sports administration in Ghana.

Djan’s lobbying efforts secured Ghana the hosting rights for the 1963 African Cup of Nations, a tournament the Black Stars went on to win. It was therefore unsurprising when, at a CAF meeting in January 1963, Djan, alongside Ethiopia’s Ydnekatchew Tessema (who would later become CAF President), was elected Vice President under CAF’s second President, Egyptian Abdel Aziz Moustafa.

A year earlier, at a CAF extraordinary assembly in Addis Ababa, Djan had also been voted onto the powerful FIFA Executive Committee (now known as the FIFA Council).

However, following the 1966 coup d’état that overthrew Nkrumah’s government, the new military regime, the National Redemption Council, banned Djan from public activities. This led to his loss of positions both at FIFA and CAF.

Kwesi Nyantakyi

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi was appointed First Vice President of CAF in May 2017.

His nomination was validated by the CAF Executive Committee during its first meeting under the presidency of Ahmad Ahmad, held in Manama, Bahrain.

However, following an exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which alleged that Nyantakyi was involved in corrupt practices, including accepting $65,000 in “shopping money” from an undercover reporter, he resigned from his roles at CAF, FIFA, and WAFU Zone B.

His resignation came after FIFA imposed a 90-day provisional ban on him, following a petition by Anas calling for a lifetime ban.

Kurt Okraku

The current President of the GFA Kurt Okraku, is the latest Ghanaian to be appointed as the second Vice President of CAF.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced his appointment during an Executive Council meeting held in Accra on April 26, 2025.

Okraku, who was elected unopposed onto the CAF Executive Committee in March 2025, will serve alongside Faouzi Lekjaa, who has been named First Vice President, replacing Senegal FA President Augustin Senghor. Okraku succeeds Ahmed Yahya as Second Vice President.

Since 2019, Okraku has been at the helm of the GFA and also serves as President of the West African Football Union (WAFU).

End conflict to honour Pope, Vatican diplomat tells South Sudan

0

Pope Francis went on a historic visit to South Sudan in 2023 Pope Francis went on a historic visit to South Sudan in 2023

South Sudan’s rival leaders should “honour” Pope Francis’ legacy by ending the country’s conflict, the Vatican’s diplomatic representative to the nation has said.

“We must try to make concrete in the daily life of South Sudan his ardent wish to see a true, durable peace, to see dialogue as the condition of that peace and to see the silencing of the weapons of war,” Archbishop Séamus Patrick Horgan said.

The Pope, who died aged 88 on Monday, had urged the two sides of South Sudan’s conflict to forge a permanent peace during a historic trip to the east African nation in 2023.

Recent violence has threatened to end a fragile peace agreement struck in 2018 between the civil war’s two factions.

The head of the UN mission in South Sudan, Nicolas Haysom, recently warned that the country was “on the brink of a return to full-scale civil war”.

Tensions rose at the start of March, when a militia group allied to Vice-President Riek Machar during South Sudan’s civil war clashed with the army.

Archbishop Horgan said Pope Francis “spoke firmly” during his 2023 visit, calling for “no more bloodshed, no more conflict, no more violence”, adding that the late pontiff’s message was still “relevant”.

The Archbishop, who spoke to congregants attending Mass at St Theresa’s Cathedral in the capital, Juba, on Friday, said it was “disheartening” to see continuing reports of violence.

The same day, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (Unmiss) called for an end to the clashes in the country after reports of fighting between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLM-IO) and South Sudan People’s Defence Forces.

Meanwhile, Machar, who leads the SPLM-IO, remains under house arrest, facing accusations of trying to spark a rebellion.

Shortly after South Sudan’s birth in 2011, the country descended into civil war between supporters of Machar and President Salva Kiir.

Archbishop Horgan reminded congregants that South Sudan held a special place in the Pope’s heart, outlining his “extraordinary relationship” with the country and “affection” for the people.

The Mass was also attended by Kiir and Vice-President Taban Deng Gai – two of the four South Sudanese leaders – whose feet were kissed by Pope Francis in the Vatican in 2019.

Speaking at the end of the Mass, Kiir said: “As an icon of peace, tolerance, forgiveness, reconciliation, harmony and inclusivity, Pope Francis’ message resonated with the people of all faiths all over the world.”

However, Christian faithful who attended the Mass said they were disappointed that the president did not use the opportunity to re-commit to peace, reconciliation and dialogue.

Justin Badi Arama, the Archbishop of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan (ECSS) and the Anglican Primate, who took part in the prayer service, said: “It is sad that Pope Francis has passed on when the Revitalised Peace Agreement is seriously sick.

“As we celebrate his passing on today, we call upon the transitional government of national unity to make every effort to make sure that the revitalised agreement, which is seriously sick, does not die.”

The Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, Santo Loku Pio, said the leaders of South Sudan chose to ignore Pope Francis’ iconic “simplicity and gesture” in Rome in 2019, when he knelt down and kissed their feet in a humble plea for peace, unity and reconciliation.

He said the gesture by the Pope remained “deeply moving”.

Bishop Loku added that Pope Francis wanted to make South Sudan a nation that understood the urgency for peace, unity and reconciliation, but that the leaders of the country ignored his efforts.

Ambassadors, religious leaders from other Christian denominations, and representatives of Muslim community also attended the prayer service.

Delayed State of Emergency could hurt Mahama’s govt – Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has called on President Mahama to declare a state of emergency on mining in water bodies and forest reserves, citing escalating environmental damage and risks to public health and future generations

According to him, the level of degradation caused by illegal mining requires firm action.

He opined that declaring a state of emergency would enable the government to freeze all existing licences, in order to reclaim the affected areas.

“When you declare a state of emergency, you freeze all rights. So the accrued rights are frozen, and then you can go into the forest to deal with the people who are there. We need to protect the environment,” he said.

He warned that any delay could have severe repercussions for the Mahama administration, emphasising that the government’s response to illegal small-scale mining could become a defining issue of its tenure.

“If there’s anything that will affect us as a government, more in this term of John Dramani Mahama, it will be our ability or inability to fight illegal small-scale mining,” he said in an interview on Joy FM.

Inusah Fuseini reminded that the NDC, while in opposition, promised to declare a state of emergency and repeal Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, allowing mining in forest reserves. He emphasized fulfilling these promises is a matter of “moral integrity” and welcomed recent steps toward repealing the law.

Highlighting the human impact, Inusah Fuseini linked polluted rivers to increased kidney disease and birth defects, warning of a potential health crisis if water bodies continue to deteriorate. He cautioned that unchecked exploitation could turn Ghana’s landscapes into deserts, citing global examples.

Urging Ghanaians to protect forests and rivers for present and future generations, Fuseini invoked the principle of intergenerational equity. Recalling his involvement in environmental protests, he suggested swift presidential action could prevent further demonstrations.

“The demonstration may not become necessary anymore,” he said, urging the government to honour the pledges it made to the Ghanaian people.

Celebrated Ghanaian gospel artiste, ACP Kofi Sarpong, has expressed his desire to work with some of Ghana’s biggest names in secular music.

Contrary to views held by some industry players about gospel musicians collaborating with secular musicians, the gospel singer claimed that since secular artistes were also made by God, he would not hesitate to collaborate with them.

Speaking on The Career Trail programme on Joy Learning TV and JoyNews, ACP Kofi Sarpong said, “If the opportunity comes, I will not hesitate or if the time comes, I will not hesitate at all.”

According to ACP Kofi Sarpong, music is simply a combination of words and rhythms, and these words cover a wide range of experiences, proverbs, advice, motivation; things that are part of everyday life. He therefore sees no reason to draw a hard line between gospel and secular music.

In the past, several gospel artistes attracted criticism from the gospel music fraternity for collaborating with secular artistes.

The likes of Herty Borngreat, Yaw Sarpong, Gifty Adorye, Joyce Blessing and MOG have all featured secular artistes in their various songs.

ACP Kofi Sarpong pointed out that some secular songs are simply irresistible, with beats that make it hard not to dance along, adding, “Some of these secular songs, when you hear the beat you cannot stand.”

While many view secular artistes as being “of the world,” the gospel musician doesn’t share that perception. Instead, he believes in engaging with them and offering the gospel, rather than stereotyping them.

He clarified that while he respects others’ reservations on the topic, he chooses not to judge. For him, collaborations with secular artistes that inspire and motivate the youth are always welcome.

“If we are to do something that will especially encourage the youth and motivate others, I will do,” he affirmed.

He however emphasised that, while he is open to collaborating with secular artistes, the lyrics would be a key factor in his decision.

GEA highlights strategic support over capital for SME growth

0

CEO of Ghana Enterprises Agency, Margaret Ansei play videoCEO of Ghana Enterprises Agency, Margaret Ansei

The CEO of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Margaret Ansei, has emphasised the importance of strategic business development over mere access to capital for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana.

Responding to widespread concerns from SMEs about funding challenges, Ansei, in an interview with GhanaWeb Business, stressed that financial constraints are often the result of deeper operational inefficiencies.

She noted that the agency supports budding entrepreneurs, including those turning hobbies into viable businesses, with more than just grants.

“Sometimes finance is not the cause; it might be the effect. GEA teaches companies and organisations how to minimize waste, that is Kaizen. You minimize waste, then you maximize productivity. If you are able to do that, it is not necessarily about capital. Sometimes, when you have a hobby you want to turn into a business, GEA assists with grants to help you, but not just by giving you money. We train you, and when we start with you, we stay with you,” she said.

“We will follow you until you grow to the end,” Ansei added, highlighting GEA’s commitment to long-term mentorship, coaching, and monitoring.

Ansei further expressed optimism for the future of Ghanaian SMEs, citing GEA’s core mandate of promoting and developing SMEs across the country.

“The future of SMEs is the mandate of GEA, to promote and develop SMEs in Ghana. The vision is about President Mahama’s apprenticeship initiatives, women’s development programs, growing businesses, growing home-grown businesses, and supporting Ghanaian-led businesses. That’s the vision. The present vision is our vision,” she added.

Flagbearer of NPP speaks on party’s defeat

0

Mildred Siabi-Mensah

Takoradi, April 28, GNA – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has acknowledged that failure to heed to the generality of Ghanaians and party enthusiasts, caused the party in the Election 2024.

He said “If we consider all the studies we have done so far as to why we lost, one of the big issues was that we did not listen to the people. We ignored your voices and exhibited arrogance. There was arrogance of power”.

Dr Bawumia continued that though party members asked for a reshuffle, party hierarchy failed to listen.

“Ghanaians told us they did not like the e-levy, but we did not listen to them. Meanwhile, there are about 16 million mobile money subscribers. So literally, all the voters use mobile money”.

“The people also told us not to implement the haircut policy, but we implemented it, despite the assurances from the then President that there will be no haircuts. We angered many bondholders who are about eight hundred thousand people,” he said.

“These people have dependants, at least three or four. So, it will never augur well for you as a government when over two million people are hurt,” he indicated.

Dr Bawumia pointed out that Ghanaians grew tired of the arrogance displayed and those unpopular decisions contributed to the abysmal performance of the NPP.

Addressing thousands of enthusiastic NPP supporters at the auditorium of the Takoradi Technical University over the weekend, as part of the party’s thank you tour, Dr Bawumia said the party had learnt the hard way from the consequences for not listening to concerns of the masses.

He however, rejected the assertion by some people that his Muslim faith was a key reason behind the party’s loss and described the perception as baseless and not supported by evidence.

The nationwide tour is on the theme: “In All Things, Give Thanks to God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Dr Bawumia also cited the cost of living and the prices of goods that went up which led to financial difficulties for many, adding that the government at the time failed to pay allowances due personnel under the Nation Builders Corp (NaBCo), Afforestation Programme, and caterers in the School Feeding Programme.

He stated that NaBCo members alone were about one hundred thousand, while those doing afforestation were seventy thousand.

He admitted that the government failed to commit resources for development infrastructure in several of its strongholds in the Western Region and other regions.

Dr Bawumia cited the PTC interchange in Takoradi, Takoradi main Market, as well as the Mpohor and Shama road projects.

He said it was worrying that about three days to the general elections, prices of petroleum products were increased.

Dr Bawumia said although it was clear that the party was going to do well in all the 270 constituencies, unfortunately there was low voter turnout, probably because of the government’s unpopular decisions.

He cited instances where voters, including party supporters, openly expressed their unwillingness to participate in the polls, adding “This is unprecedented in Ghana’s political history”.

Dr Bawumia continued that the party was reconsidering changes to its delegate system, as reports suggested it accounted partly for the party’s loss.

He was very optimistic that the NPP would win the next general elections adding “I believe 2028 is the year for the elephant”.

Mr Stephen Ntim, the National Chairman of the party, urged all NPP activists to unite and heal, stressing that there was hope for the future.

Justin Frimpong Koduah, the General Secretary of the party urged NPP members to submit proposals for constitutional amendments, as the party prepared for an extraordinary national delegates conference in July this year.
