Lord Kenya heaps praises on King Paluta over similarities in music style

0

Ghanaian rapper Lord Kenya has heaped praise on rising music sensation King Paluta, drawing striking parallels between the young artiste’s style and his own during his prime.

The endorsement from the hiplife pioneer comes at a time when King Paluta is enjoying a meteoric rise in Ghana’s music scene and is being tipped as a strong contender for the coveted Artiste of the Year award.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM, Lord Kenya, who now identifies as an evangelist following his departure from secular music, said King Paluta’s rap delivery and energy reminded him of his younger self during the peak of his music career.

“One rising new artiste I see myself in is King Paluta. If you listen to his flow, it is much like my younger self,” he stated.

Lord Kenya, who was instrumental in shaping Ghana’s rap and hiplife landscape in the early 2000s, noted that King Paluta’s current popularity mirrors the attention he attracted when the genre was still gaining mainstream appeal.

While Lord Kenya has since turned away from secular music, he revealed that he has not abandoned music entirely. He expressed interest in a possible collaboration with King Paluta—but with a condition rooted in his Christian faith.

“I have not stopped doing music because it is a talent God has given me, and I will consider doing a track with King Paluta. But first of all, he has to take Christ as his personal savior, and together we can do a song to praise God,” he said.

King Paluta, known for his energetic delivery and authentic style, recently released his first single of 2025, titled . The song has been widely praised for its lyrical strength and sound, reinforcing public comparisons to Lord Kenya’s early hits.

Suspend ‘Thank You Tour’ – Mpiani warns NPP

0

Former Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing ‘Thank You tour’, calling for it to be suspended immediately.

He argued that the tour is ill-timed and unhelpful in the aftermath of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ on Tuesday, April 29, Mr. Mpiani described the tour as a “misplaced priority” and urged party leaders to shift their focus towards internal reflection and addressing the issues that contributed to the electoral loss.

“There is a need to suspend the ‘Thank You’ tour,” he said. “What is happening is not good for the party. The NPP must take a step back, go indoors, and find a way out of this mess.”

Mr. Mpiani clarified that, as he is not a member of the party’s National Council, he is unaware of the reasons behind the decision to embark on the tour. Nevertheless, he questioned its timing and warned that it might deepen internal divisions.

“Maybe if I had been there, I would have given them my advice earlier. But I can’t fault them without knowing the reasons behind the decision. Still, I believe it was the wrong move,” he stated.

He continued, “They should suspend the ongoing ‘Thank You’ tour, get back indoors, look at the issues, and find a better way to approach the members.”

Dr. Bawumia, the 2024 flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has commenced a ‘Thank You tour’ following the party’s landslide defeat in the 2024 general elections.

According to the party, the tour forms part of efforts to rebuild and re-energise the party ahead of the 2028 elections, while also appreciating the contributions of party members during the last campaign.

The tour comes on the heels of a report by a 12-member committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, which was established to investigate the reasons behind the party’s electoral loss.

The party has declined to make the contents of the report public.

The victim

A mobile money vendor, Christopher Ahordo, popularly known as Colombo has been shot and killed by unidentified armed robbers on the evening of Monday, April 28, 2025, at Gbagblakope, near the Diamond Cement Factory in Aflao, located in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

The incident reportedly occurred around 6:15 p.m., according to Ketu South-based journalist Sylvia Awumey.

She reported that the victim who was working late was preparing to close his mobile money shop around 6:15 p.m. when two masked men in long robes approached him, armed with pump-action shotguns.

The robbers took a bag believed to contain money, and as they made their escape, one of them shot Colombo in the left side of his chest.
Colombo was reported to have died at the scene. Witnesses stated that they could not assist him right away, because the assailants fired warning shots as they fled into a nearby bush.

Sylvia reported that residents managed to transport the body to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary.
The case has been reported to the municipal police, who are now conducting an investigation.

Construction begins on C/R Lands Commission Office complex

0

Construction of an ultra-modern Office complex for the Central Regional office of the Lands Commission has begun in Cape Coast to improve land administration and service delivery in the region.

It formed part of the Commission’s strategic plan to construct permanent office accommodation for all the regional offices in the country in order to reduce rent payment.

The building, expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months, will house all the various departments of the Commission, currently operating at different locations in the Cape Coast metropolis.

The Chief Director of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Innocent Haligah, in an address before the sod-cutting for commencement of the work, explained that the new edifice would accommodate and motivate officials of the Commission, saying, “If you work in an environment that is not motivating enough, there is no urgency in rushing to your work place and if the environment is not friendly enough, you are in a hurry to go back home.”

“This particular edifice will make it possible so that even if we come to work, we will not be in a hurry to rush back home because it will be comfortable for us to work,” he added.

The location, he noted, was also important as would be accessible to almost everybody, and said the current location make it inconvenience for people to access services at the Commission.

Mr Haligah urged personnel of the Commission to refrain from interfering in the construction of the building, emphasising that, “Pass every information that you think is relevant to the appropriate communicative agency and they will do that on our behalf.”

He appealed to the contractor to engage residents of Cape Coast and catchment areas in the construction of the facility, saying, “We don’t want people to be brought from elsewhere and then our youth here will not engaged.”

For his part, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, Jones Boadu, explained that per the country’s constitution, the Lands Commission was supposed to have offices in all the 16 regions, but most of the offices are operated in rented premises.

Furthermore, Management of the Commission, he mentioned, in consultation with government had embarked on a plan to build offices in all the other regions and also.

He noted that, the Commission consider the Central region as one of the key regions in terms of revenue, practice and other things, adding that, “We have already done the sod-cutting in Savanna and Upper East Regions.”

The Central Regional Lands Officer, Seth Owusu, in his remark, stated that the construction of the building would inspire personnel to give out their best in serving the community with diligence and hard work.

He indicated that the current state of the regional office was a hindrance towards ensuring efficiency among personnel.

In his remarks, the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osaberima Kwesi Atta II, underlined that the construction of a modern edifice for the Lands Commission was long overdue.

Let’s prioritise knowledge and skill acquisition rather than certificates

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, April 29, GNA – Professor William Baah Boateng, Professor of Economics, Department of Economics, University of Ghana, has called for the prioritisation and focus on knowledge and skill acquisition rather than certificates.

He said there should be practical training with case studies without compromising “critical thinking of the mind.”

Prof. Boateng was speaking at the Industry-Academia Roundtable Meeting organised by the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) on the theme: “Connecting Skill Sets for the Employability of Students in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET).”

The meeting sought to identify challenges contributing to the mismatch between graduate skills and industry requirements, particularly in the TVET sector, and explore strategies and incentive structures to increase industry participation in curriculum design, training delivery, and apprenticeship programmes.

It is also to showcase effective collaboration models from Ghana and globally, including DTI’s dual-TVET system and industry-informed training approach, co-create a framework of policy suggestions and practical steps to enhance TVET delivery, infrastructure, and stakeholder collaboration and lay the foundation for long-term partnerships, continuous learning, and a strong ecosystem that supports youth employment and national development.

Effective collaboration between academia and industry is essential to developing a skilled workforce equipped with up-to-date technologies and solutions for societal challenges.

However, many countries continue to experience a significant “industry-academia gap”, a disconnect marked by a lack of mutual understanding between the two sectors.

He said there must be creativity and innovation at the basic level and investment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education like AI, Machine learning, Data Science among others, which should include vocational and technical education.

He said the world of work was dynamic and changing fast and labour needed to be well positioned in line with the changing world and key elements of labour “quality” embodied in skills must always be sharpened in anticipation.

Madam Constance Swaniker, the Founder of DTI, said the consequences of the divide were far-reaching, where graduates, especially from TVET institutions, often lacked job-ready skills, which limited their employability and contributes to high youth unemployment.

She said at the same time, industries struggle to find workers with the appropriate skills, hindering productivity and economic growth.

“Over the past decade, there has been a significant global push to bridge this gap. Countries like China and India have made substantial strides through policy-driven initiatives and programmes,” she said.

She said the situation in Ghana was quite different, because the industry-academia gap was particularly evident among graduates of public technical universities, who often lacked the technical and employability skills required by industry.

“This skills mismatch is attributed to several factors including outdated curricula, instructors lacking competency-based training delivery skills, poorly equipped labs, and limited engagement between academic institutions and employers,” she said.

She said DTIs impact was evident in its 70 per cent employability score (IFC Vitae Assessment), driven by best practices such as co-designed curricula, entrepreneurship training, modern equipment, and industry-experienced facilitators.

Other collaborations have led to the development of a National Precision Quality Policy Framework, designed to raise national standards in production and manufacturing.

These efforts position DTI as a leading force in Africa’s evolving TVET landscape.

Ghanaians must do extra, invest in Tier 3 pensions

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), Christopher Boadi-Mensah, has encouraged Ghanaians to be intentional about investing towards their retirement.

According to him, the two mandatory pension tiers, managed by SSNIT and the Trust Fund, are not sufficient on their own, which is why the third tier was introduced.

The Tier 3 pension scheme is a voluntary contribution made by individuals, often complemented by employer contributions.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Business and Financial Times–Ecobank Money Summit, Boadi-Mensah said, “What I can say is that we need to make an effort to do more for our retirement. As a nation, or as a people, we must do this because we need to retire comfortably and with dignity.”

He emphasised the importance of taking voluntary contributions seriously to secure a stable post-retirement life.

“With our current pension system, you need to do extra. That’s why the three-tier pension scheme is so helpful. The opportunity to voluntarily save towards retirement is something we should all embrace,” he stated.

“Because it’s voluntary, many people tend to overlook it. But I’m urging everyone to make extra contributions towards Tier 3 for their own retirement security,” Boadi-Mensah added.

The summit was held under the theme, “Optimising Investment and Pensions Management: Strategies for Sustainable Retirement Income and Economic Growth.”

Minority in Parliament demands urgent action following US Travel Advisory on Ghana

0

The Minority Caucus on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Ghana’s Parliament has called on the government to urgently address rising insecurity and governance lapses following the United States’ issuance of a Level 2 Travel Advisory on Ghana.

The advisory, issued by the United States Department of State, cautions American citizens to “exercise increased caution” when travelling to Ghana, citing concerns over violent crimes, such as carjacking, street mugging, assaults, and rape.

The alert also flagged Ghana with indicators for organised crime, civil unrest, and other security risks—factors that the Minority says mark a sharp decline in Ghana’s international reputation as a safe and stable democracy.

In a statement signed by Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, the Deputy Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and MP for Bosome Freho, the Minority attributed the advisory to what it described as the government’s “alarming failure” to uphold law and order, and its continued silence on several high-profile security threats and financial scandals.

“This development is a serious indictment of Ghana’s longstanding reputation as one of Africa’s safest, most stable, and well-governed nations,” the statement noted, adding that Ghana’s name—once a beacon of democracy—is now being dragged into disrepute on the global stage.

The Minority further linked the advisory to recent violent incidents, particularly in Bawku, where unresolved ethnic conflicts have resulted in multiple fatalities, indiscriminate shootings, and destruction of property. The area is now categorised at Level 3 risk in the advisory—just one level below conflict-ridden countries like Burkina Faso and Mali.

The caucus condemned the government’s failure to act on mounting allegations of drug trafficking, money laundering, and illicit financial flows, warning that these issues continue to taint Ghana’s financial integrity and global image.

“The government’s inability to manage these crises is not only endangering lives but also threatening investment and international confidence,” the statement said. “This advisory has serious implications for foreign investment, as international business travellers would now be compelled to take heightened precautions when entering Ghana.”

The Minority Caucus issued four key demands: immediate action to restore rule of law, impartial investigations and prosecutions of pending criminal cases, efforts to rebuild the credibility of Ghana’s security agencies, and collaboration with civil society and diplomatic partners to hold the government accountable.

They insisted that the government must act decisively to reverse the negative global perception and restore the country’s image as a peaceful and democratic state.

“Ghanaians deserve a government that upholds the rule of law, protects its citizens, and maintains our country’s rightful place as a beacon of peace and security on the African continent,” the statement concluded.

TUC Remembers Workers Who Died During Work

0

Joshua Ansah, TUC Secretary General

On the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which fell yesterday, April 28, the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) joined the rest of the world in remembering workers who lost their lives during work or sustained injuries.

Recognised as a fundamental right at work, the theme for this year’s commemoration is: “Emerging Technologies and their Impact on Workers’ Health and Safety.”

In a statement on the occasion, the TUC stated that “we confront the realities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it is crucial to recognise and address the profound influence of emerging technologies on the world of work and their impact on workers’ health and safety.”

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other cutting-edge technologies is transforming industries and workplaces at an unprecedented pace, the TUC went on, adding that “while these advancements bring significant benefits, including enhanced efficiency and productivity, they also introduce new challenges and risks to workers’ health and safety.”

On one hand, emerging technologies offer the potential to improve working conditions, reduce exposure to hazardous tasks, and enhance worker well-being, the TUC pointed out.

For instance, the statement went on, “automation can eliminate repetitive and dangerous tasks, while wearable devices can monitor workers’ health and provide real-time feedback.”

On the other hand, however, the TUC observed “these technologies can introduce new hazards, such as increased exposure to musculoskeletal disorders from prolonged device usage or accidents resulting from human-machine interactions.”

Key concerns worthy of note, the TUC pointed out include “Physical health risks arising from increased sedentary behaviours and exposure to unfamiliar health disorders.

“Mental health challenges, where the rapid pace of technological change contributes to increased stress, anxiety, and the pressure to constantly adapt, potentially exacerbating mental health issues.

“Job insecurity and skills obsolescence, as automation of tasks can create uncertainty, threaten livelihoods, and widen inequality gaps among workers.”

To mitigate the negative impacts of emerging technologies on workers’ health and safety, “we urge policymakers, employers, unions, and technology developers to conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop effective mitigation strategies,” it stressed.

The provision of continuous training and upskilling opportunities to equip workers with the necessary skills to adapt to new technologies and work environments should also be considered, the TUC added.

Also suggested is the implementation and enforcement of robust safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries associated with the use of new technologies.

Another suggestion put forth by the TUC is “a culture of well-being that prioritises workers’ physical health, mental health, and overall safety.”

The TUC called on the government to expedite the passage of the Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) Bill to provide enhanced protection for the working people of Ghana.

Employers and governments across Africa, the TUC said, should invest significantly in OSHE systems to minimise or eliminate preventable deaths and injuries at workplaces.

Raymond Archer’s Prophecy Is Unfolding, But We Shall Let Mcdan Be McDan.

0

Jpg
Jpg

When a blind man dares his opponent to a stone-throwing battle, he is certain his foot is fixed on something. That is a paraphrase of an axiom in our local parlance.

Raymond Archer can take advantage of the resetting agenda to muscle up supports from all the public investigative bodies such as EOCO, FIC, CID and OSP to delve into the depths of the activities of McDan Group of Companies for the perceived corruption, money laundering and serious fraud.

Trust us, all the so-called suspicion will come to nought. Rather, Raymond may stain himself because he’s the blind man whose foot is palpitatingly fixed on the stone of revenge.

When it comes to dealing with people like McDan, underestimation should least be considered. Though such persons might seem powerlessly harmless, the Lord will surely protect their defendless heads; and no matter the disruption McDan and his company may suffer, he will definitely have a safe arrival.

And in fact, but for his sword of truth, he would not have survived all the media trauma and turbulence schemed at assassinating his reputation.

We don’t know why a godly President like HE Mr John Dramani Mahama, whose political senses are right, in his best tune of knowledge and tone of wisdom, who is resurrecting businesses, will not protect an industrious Ghanaian businessman like Dr Daniel Nii Nshia Mckorley, but will lift up Raymond Archer to one of the highest security offices as head of Serious Fraud Office?

This was the very person who, having expressed publicly his animosity against McDan, paired the former with the New Patriotic Party as two inseparable entities, alerted the world he was going to deal with McDan should Ndc win power.

Raymond Archer made all kinds of abusively disparaging writings on his Facebook wall. If they are mere predictive statements, why has he cleaned up his Facebook page of those threats? Clearly, he’s been told lies that McDan was behind the collapse of his business at the Trade Fair Centre. By then, he was binging on that falsehood as an excuse to make for an already failing business to look good in the eyes of the public.

Raymond Archer must tell the world why he did not buy time with the court to save his $10 Million worth business after the High Court Order was made to pave way for the demolition exercises for the redevelopment project to kick start?

Was it not the same court Mr. Raymond Archer first went to and won an injunction against his eviction by the management of Trade Fair Centre? Witty smart, as most investigative journalists may be, he chose the political auctioning method and waged in the gamble with the already failing and unprofitable printing business in the political casino.

In that planned drama to the world, he was the loser and victim while non-political McDan was his hounting hunter. Raymond could have still flexed with power because the same regime he associated McDan with had appointed his direct sister and brother in-law to lucrative political positions.

It’s so clear that the investigative bodies of the government we voted for have some mission to destroying the reputable McDan’s brand.

Why, on earth, should the confidential letters to McDan’s Group of Companies be leaked and littered on social media before the recipients get notified? Today, Raymond Archer has pulled down all those myriads of threats against McDan and shutdown his Facebook pages reserved for his war against the latter.

It won’t be a surprise if by next month, the CID Head Office and EOCO concurrently also announce publicly an invitation to McDan Group to yield to investigation for an alleged financial crime as OSP and FIC are already doing the digging down also at the same time.

We have been watching Raymond Archer’s prophecy graduallly unfold since NDC came into power as he had previously and severally vowed to ensure that McDan Group of Companies suffer. But as it stands today, the Trade Fair site which Raymond Archer was coveting and went on to make so much noise about is being developed for Ghanaians in particular and Africa’s biggest trade complex in general, by June it will be completed and certainly be handed over to the state and the La Traditional Council.

McDan never sought to own it but acted as a representative of the Board to ensure the removal of everybody and everything.

The testimony is there for everyone to see that President Akufo Addo never sold the place to McDan!

We urge McDan to continue as a beacon of hope for economic empowerment to many, and also as a resource organization for youth development.

By and by, Dr Daniel Nii Nshia Mckorley is helping in shaping the future of Ghana for economic development and social dynamics.

Govt to extend student loan scheme to private tertiary institutions – Haruna Iddrisu

0

The government is considering extending the Student Loan Scheme to cover students enrolled in private tertiary institutions.

This announcement came during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed board members of the Student Loan Trust Fund on Tuesday, April 29, which coincided with the official launch of a digital loan application platform designed to streamline access for students.

According to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, the proposal seeks to offer financial support to students in private universities, many of whom face similar economic hardships as their counterparts in public institutions but remain ineligible under the current scheme.

“Government is considering expanding the Student Loan Scheme to students even in private tertiary institutions, so even for this year [2025], your remit is to look at what is obvious and natural within your mandate.

“It’s the desire of President John Dramani Mahama to expand it to other Ghanaians who are equally struggling, maybe because of their inability to get admission into a public university. They have to go to private universities, but they are still Ghanaians. And this is a loan, payable by the students,” he announced.

The event marks the relaunch of Khan’s AK Promotions in collaboration with Ghana’s Legacy Promotions, aiming to shine a global spotlight on African boxing.

Headlining the card on June 13 is a high-stakes cruiserweight clash between American contender Andrew Tabiti (21-2, 17 KOs) and Ghanaian knockout artist Jacob Dickson (14-1, 13 KOs). With both fighters needing a statement win to revive their careers, the eight-round showdown promises fireworks. Tabiti, once on the cusp of world title glory, faces a dangerous challenge in Dickson, who’s determined to prove he belongs on the world stage.

In the co-main event, British fighter Ohara Davies (25-4, 18 KOs) makes a surprise return from retirement. The outspoken puncher will square off against Tanzania’s Mohammed Aliseni (22-9-3, 13 KOs) in what Davies calls a “bucket list” fight possibly his final bow in the ring.

The card also features a strong lineup of regional talent. Ghana’s Daniel Gorsh (15-0, 11 KOs) defends his WBO Africa bantamweight title against Theophilus Allotey (7-4), while rising star Ahmed Abdula (8-0, 7 KOs) faces power-punching Haruna Mohammed (5-1, 5 KOs) for the Ghana National Title.

Adding international flair, Bulgarian amateur standout Radoslav Rosenov steps into the pro ring for only the second time, taking on veteran Ghanaian Richman Ashelley (12-5, 11 KOs).

Sharaf Mahama, CEO of Legacy Promotions, emphasized that the event is more than just entertainment, it’s part of a vision to elevate boxing in Africa. “We’re building a platform for African fighters to shine globally,” he said. “This is about long-term growth, not just one night.”

The main event between Tabiti and Dickson will be closely watched, as both fighters seek to regain relevance in a competitive division. With DAZN broadcasting the event worldwide, Accra will serve as the epicenter of boxing on June 13—a moment that could signal a new era for African boxing or simply a test of who wants it more

Minkah-Premo tops Ghana’s largest law firms by number of lawyers in 2025

0

Minkah-Premo has topped the 2025 law firm rankings by lawyer count, with Kumasi-based Momim & Botta Solicitors the only non-Accra firm among the top five.

Ghana’s legal landscape continues to grow, and at the top of the latest rankings stands Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners (MPOBB), better known simply as Minkah-Premo. According to new figures released by Dennislaw Ghana, the firm leads the country in 2025 with a total of 54 lawyers, setting it apart in a market where size increasingly matters.

The rankings, based on the number of lawyers employed, offer a snapshot of Ghana’s most prominent law firms as of April 25, 2025. With legal services expanding alongside the country’s economic growth, firms have been steadily building larger teams to meet rising client demand across sectors like energy, finance, and infrastructure.

Trailing Minkah-Premo is Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah, a firm well-known for its corporate and commercial law expertise, which claims 44 lawyers. Moomim & Botta Solicitors comes in third with 43 lawyers — a notable achievement not just for its size, but also for its location.

Based in Kumasi, Moomim & Botta Solicitors is the only firm in the top five that operates outside Accra, making it a standout in a list otherwise dominated by firms from the capital.

AB & David Africa, with 42 lawyers, and Sam Okudzeto and Associates, with 40, round out the top five. With just a few lawyers separating the second through fifth spots, the competition among Ghana’s largest firms is razor-thin — a sign of the growing sophistication and competitiveness of the legal market.

The numbers tell a broader story, too. While the legal market remains heavily Accra-centric, Moomim & Botta Solicitors’ strong showing signals a shift: that major legal services are no longer confined to the capital alone.

The emergence of regional players points to a more geographically diverse legal future, although a larger concentration (over 76 per cent) of the lawyer count remains in Accra.

Nonetheless, Minkah-Premo’s dominance at the very top is clear. With the largest team in the country, the firm is well-positioned to handle increasingly complex and cross-sector legal work. As client needs evolve, size, depth of expertise, and geographic reach are becoming critical.

Minkah-Premo’s 2025 ranking confirms it is not only keeping pace with these changes — it is setting the standard.

Will this remain the status quo in 2026 or will there a surprise new player? Like you, we await the answer.

“This Is a National Problem” – Freddy Blay Calls Out NDC’s Weak Approach to Galamsey

0

Freddy Blay, former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has voiced doubts over the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) ability to effectively combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, if voted into power as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking during a television interview on April 29, Blay argued that the challenges surrounding galamsey are deeply rooted and require more than political promises to resolve.

He believes the John Mahama-led NDC government would struggle to make any meaningful progress due to the complex social and economic factors that sustain the practice.

“There is very little this government can do towards addressing the issue of galamsey the way they are going,” Blay remarked, casting doubt on the opposition’s commitment and strategy in dealing with the issue.

Reflecting on his own party’s efforts, Blay admitted that the NPP administration, under President Akufo-Addo, also faced difficulties in curbing the illegal activity.

Measures such as deploying the military, banning excavator imports, and introducing high-tech surveillance were implemented, yet the problem persisted.

He stressed that fighting galamsey requires a comprehensive and united national approach that transcends political divides.

Rather than using the issue for campaign gains, Blay urged stakeholders to treat illegal mining as a national crisis.

“Sanitise the sector… be firm on punishments… This is a national problem and needs all of us to talk about it,” he added.

Illegal mining continues to devastate Ghana’s environment, polluting rivers, degrading forests, and threatening livelihoods, despite repeated efforts by successive governments to bring it under control.

Why Mahama ordered audit into Agenda 111 projects – Health Minister discloses

0

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that none of the hospitals under the Agenda 111 initiative is currently operational.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Minister said this situation prompted President John Mahama to call for a full audit into the projects.

“None of the Agenda 111 hospitals is operational as we speak, which is why President Mahama has directed that an audit be conducted to understand the true status of the project,” Mr. Akandoh stated.

He criticised the previous Akufo-Addo administration for poor planning and implementation of the initiative.

“We all know how Agenda 111 started. The way the project was handled wasn’t the best. Even if you intend to build 111 hospitals, you could stagger the project and complete them in phases,” he said.

According to the Minister, the former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had promised to hand over completed hospitals to Ghanaians before leaving office.

However, Mr. Akandoh noted, unfortunately, not a single one of them is in operation.

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1G8iii4R2T/

He added that the Agenda 111 project now falls under the Ministry of Health’s purview, and efforts are being made to assess its feasibility and sustainability.

He also cited budget inconsistencies, saying, “The estimated cost for the entire project was between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion. But by the time they left office, they had already sunk close to $400 million into it.”

“The interesting part is, if they had staggered the project as they should have, by now we could have completed more than 20 hospitals with that amount. But that wasn’t the case,” he lamented.

Referring to former President Akufo-Addo’s last State of the Nation Address, Mr. Akandoh said, “He mentioned that they had completed three hospitals and even commissioned some on December 5. But when President Mahama gave his first State of the Nation Address and referenced it, I went to verify, and unfortunately, none of those hospitals was operational.”

The Health Minister revealed that President Mahama as part of the audit has requested for a comprehensive blueprint.

“President Mahama has directed us to audit the Agenda 111 project and present him with a clear blueprint for the way forward, and we’ve been given timelines,” he said.

NPP’s Eric Amoako Twum dismisses claims of party disunity

A communication team Member of NPP, Eric Amoako Twum A communication team Member of NPP, Eric Amoako Twum

A communication team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Eric Amoako Twum, has dismissed ongoing claims of disunity within the party.

He asserted that such narratives are being pushed by individuals with ulterior motives.

“There is no disunity. The people who want to see disunity are probably the ones orchestrating it. I don’t see any disunity, and I will not sit here and make matters worse,” he stated on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on April 29, 2025.

His comments come in response to concerns raised by party stalwart Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, who on April 28, 2025, cautioned that the party’s recent tour had strayed from its original goal of revitalising grassroots support, and instead was intensifying internal divisions and finger-pointing.

Agyarko described the development as worrisome and urged party leaders to refocus the tour on its intended purpose of fostering unity and reconciliation.

Eric Twum also accused some vocal critics of acting out of personal interest.

“Those who are shouting are people I have personal issues with, because most of what they’re doing is not based on principle,” he said.

He further criticized those advocating for amnesty for certain individuals, suggesting that some of them were responsible for the very suspensions they now oppose.

“Some are now calling for amnesty to be extended to certain persons, yet some of those writing letters today were the architects behind those suspensions,” he stated.

He continued, “If today, all of a sudden, they have found their voices simply because Bawumia is going on a Thank You Tour, and now everyone is overly excited, claiming something untoward is happening—there is nothing untoward happening anywhere.”

Adwumawura Programme is a ‘game changer’ for Ghanaian youth – NEIP CEO

0

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Eric Adjei has said the Adwumawura Programme would be a game changer for Ghanaian youth.

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), operating under the newly established Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment will oversee the implementation of the programme.

He made the statement at the launch of the programme which took place at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi on Monday, April 28, 2025, drawing a significant audience of government officials, young entrepreneurs, and community leaders.

“Through partnerships with Development Partners, Industry Leaders, Private Sector players, Civil Society, and of course, the vibrant youth themselves, we are poised to make this initiative the turning point for youth entrepreneurship in Ghana,” he stated.

He indicated that the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme is working on implementing other interventions aimed at promoting entrepreneurship such as:

– The Presidential Innovation Challenge — igniting the spirit of STEM and Green Entrepreneurship.

– The Vice-Presidential Empowerment Programme for Women and Persons with Disability — because inclusion is not optional, it is essential.

– The Student Enterprise Initiative — sparking business ideas right from the classroom and lecture halls;

– Youth in Innovative Agriculture — because the future of food security lies in youthful innovation;

– The Presidential School Garden Initiative — growing young minds and green ideas; and Streetism to Entrepreneurship — turning lost hope into lasting prosperity.

He added, “imagine the ripple effect – jobs created, communities uplifted, innovations sparked – all starting from the dreams of our own youth! We would need the collaboration and support specifically of the development partners in mobilizing resources to implement these interventions to contribute significantly to the gains that will be made by The Adwumawura Programme.

“Together we will redefine Ghana’s economic future for decades to come. Mr. President, you have always believed in the youth of Ghana. And today, as we launch The Adwumawura Programme, we affirm our faith that under your leadership, Ghana’s youth will no longer chase jobs — they will create them”.

About The Adwumawura Programme

The Programme is a fulfillment of the NDC campaign promise to prioritize youth empowerment and job creation. The Adwumawura Programme aims to create, track, and monitor young businesses annually, with a special focus on the youth.

In its first phase, the top 2,000 implementable business proposals will receive comprehensive support, including:

  • Business Development Training: Equipping young entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in business.
  • Mentorship: Pairing young entrepreneurs with experienced business leaders and mentors.
  • Access to Start-up Capital: Providing financial support to help young entrepreneurs turn their business ideas into reality.
  • Marketing and Networking: Offering platforms for young entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services, and connect with potential customers and partners.

The Programme is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s economy, as it will help to create jobs, stimulate innovation, and promote entrepreneurship among young people.

By supporting young businesses and entrepreneurs, the AdwumaWura Program will contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.

When we protested against galamsey, they claimed we were paid

Artist and activist GlennSamm Artist and activist GlennSamm

Ghanaian walking artist and activist GlennSamm has clapped back at critics over his refusal to participate in the revived #GalamseyMustFall campaign, which has been gaining momentum on social media.

GlennSamm, renowned for his body-painted protest art, was among the 54 #StopGalamseyNow protesters who were arrested and detained by police on September 22 and 23, 2024, during a demonstration against illegal mining, a practice that has severely polluted water bodies across the country.

After being held for several days and arraigned in court, the protesters were granted bail, and the charges were eventually dropped.

However, with the galamsey menace still ongoing, there have been renewed calls for the new John Dramani Mahama administration to take decisive action, with a protest held in Accra on April 28, 2025.

The renewed protests have sparked criticism from some quarters, accusing GlennSamm and other former activists of remaining silent this time around, with insinuations of political bias.

In a sharp response on X (formerly Twitter) on April 29, 2025, GlennSamm (real name Samuel Glenn Semakor) dismissed the accusations, stating:

“When we protested, they claimed we were paid. Now, as I sit here counting my losses and dealing with my mental health, you still won’t let me be. Mmoa (fools).”

He further mocked the latest campaigners, writing, “Mmoa again, why did they give up so easily? We were just 60, yet we made it happen. Now, all I hear is empty talk.”

Danny Murphy backs Mohammed Kudus for Liverpool move despite quiet season

0

Mohammed Kudus is a player of West Ham Mohammed Kudus is a player of West Ham

Despite not having a standout season statistically, West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus has caught the attention of former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, who believes the Ghanaian possesses the qualities to succeed at a top club like Liverpool.

Murphy has been vocal in his admiration for Kudus, first highlighting the Ghanaian’s abilities during West Ham’s narrow 2-1 loss to the Reds at Anfield earlier in April.

In that match, Kudus impressed with his physical strength, flair, and a near-spectacular goal that was thwarted by a world-class save from Alisson.

Building on his earlier praise, Murphy, following Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, April 27, 2024, urged Liverpool to consider signing the West Ham midfielder.

“Kudus is robust, skilful, and capable of playing as a No.10 or on either wing. He is incredibly strong and possesses great pace,” Murphy commented.

Although Kudus hasn’t been statistically dominant, with just four goals and two assists in 28 appearances, Murphy believes his physicality, versatility, and flashes of brilliance make him a perfect fit for a club with Liverpool’s ambitions.

With several Liverpool forwards expected to depart this summer, Murphy views Kudus as a smart, long-term acquisition. Interest from other European clubs and the Saudi Pro League is reportedly growing, setting the stage for a potentially eventful summer for the 24-year-old Ghanaian.

Turn ‘Thank You Tour’ into Apology Tour – Kwame Danso slams NPP

0

The 2024 running mate of the Movement for Change, led by Alan Kyerematen, has criticized the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You Tour,” describing it as ‘tone-deaf’ and ‘misplaced’ in the face of growing public dissatisfaction.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Jantuah on Nhyira FM’s Kuroyi Mu Nsem show, Kwame Danso stated that instead of embarking on a nationwide appreciation tour, the opposition NPP should apologize to Ghanaians for what he described as “unpopular and burdensome policies they introduced while in power”.

“Instead of a ‘Thank You Tour’, the NPP should embark on an apology tour to Ghanaians,” he said.

He specifically cited the Electronic Levy (E-levy), the betting tax, and the much-debated National Cathedral project as examples of policy decisions that have eroded public trust in the New Patriotic party.

“To regain appeal, the NPP should apologize for the introduction of E-levy, betting tax, and the National Cathedral in which they invested so much just to dig a manhole for Ghanaians. Your ‘Thank You Tour’ lacks purpose without reconciliation with the people of Ghana,” he emphasized.

Mr. Danso further urged the NPP to assume the role of a “responsible opposition,” particularly as the country moves towards a different direction from the Nana Addo and Bawumiah–led government.

“They should focus on offering constructive ideas rather than obstructing efforts aimed at national progress,” he added.

On the topic of potential collaboration with Alan Kyerematen, Mr. Danso stated that the doors were not entirely closed.

“If the NPP wants Alan’s support, they should appoint credible mediators and offer a genuine apology,” he noted, suggesting that mutual respect and accountability are prerequisites for any form of alliance.

NPP must end this needless, unproductive Thank You Tour – Sammi Wiafe writes

0

When the New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced a nationwide “Thank You” tour following its humiliating defeat in the 2024 general elections, many considered it a commendable gesture.

At the very least, it was an opportunity to express gratitude to the over four million Ghanaians who voted for the party and its Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

However, what was supposed to be a moment of reflection and healing has instead exposed deepening cracks within the party. What was meant to unify has turned into yet another episode of internal division and public embarrassment.

We have all witnessed the unfortunate and, frankly, unnecessary public altercation between two prominent figures—Kennedy Agyapong and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Their public spat, marked by accusations, counter-accusations, and classist rhetoric, raises the question: Is this what the “Thank You” tour is about? Shouldn’t it be about reconciliation, not rivalry?

To make matters worse, Dr. Bawumia himself, during this same tour, appeared to shift blame for the party’s defeat, citing issues such as economic hardship, the E-Levy, and what he termed the “arrogance of power.” Ironically, the arrogance he condemned is being blatantly displayed during this very tour.

But ultimately, the blame must be placed at the feet of the party leadership. The current chairman, whose primary appeal to delegates during his 2022 bid for the role was his long-standing commitment and loyalty, has proven to be ineffective. Under his leadership, the party has failed to foster unity or strategically manage post-election recovery.

One must ask: why has the entire party machinery thrown its weight behind Dr. Bawumia, a candidate with clear ambitions to run again? This alignment gives the impression that the party leadership is openly backing one candidate in what is expected to be another competitive Flagbearer contest. Wouldn’t it have been more prudent to allow Dr. Bawumia to conduct this tour independently?

Kennedy Agyapong, who has already declared his interest in contesting again, has accused the party of intimidating his supporters. In that context, inviting him to join a tour led by his chief rival seems disingenuous at best, and politically tone-deaf at worst.

Contrast this with the conduct of former President John Mahama, who, after his electoral losses in 2016 and 2020, embarked on his own “Thank You” tours without involving the full party leadership. Party figures like Asiedu Nketia only joined him publicly after he had been re-elected as Flagbearer.

The NPP leadership’s apparent bet on Dr. Bawumia’s return bid smacks of opportunism. They are pinning their own political futures to his, hoping that his popularity among delegates will secure their re-election at upcoming party congresses. This is a dangerous gamble, especially when the grassroots remain disillusioned and angry.

Moreover, the timing of the tour is questionable. The party is just months away from a critical national congress in July, where key constitutional amendments are expected. Wouldn’t it have been more strategic to focus on internal healing and reform first before venturing into public gestures of gratitude?

What the NPP truly needs right now is introspection, not pageantry. The 2024 election defeat should be an inflection point. The detailed report presented by Professor Mike Oquaye’s fact-finding committee offers the party a roadmap for reform. That document, not this tour, should be guiding the party’s next steps.

In short, this “Thank You” tour, rather than promoting unity, is aggravating divisions. It is a misjudged attempt at damage control that risks doing more harm than good.

“Convert the Cathedral into Apartments”

0

Fred Kwesi Agbenyo, the Member of Parliament for Guan, has proposed repurposing the stalled National Cathedral project into housing for public sector workers as per reports from Citinewsroom.

This suggestion follows recent comments from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, who admitted that the unfinished cathedral project, despite $58 million in public funds, contributed to voter dissatisfaction and played a role in the NPP’s electoral defeat.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on April 29, 2025, Agbenyo expressed his concern over the project’s unfinished state, calling it a financial misstep by the previous government.

He remarked, “The investment that they made in the so-called cathedral. $58 million has gone down the drain.” He questioned how the project could ever be completed, suggesting that the funds and resources would be better allocated elsewhere.

To offer a solution, Agbenyo proposed converting the National Cathedral site into apartments for public sector workers, including those at the Ridge Hospital and ministries.

“My advice… is that we get some investors and convert that whole place into beautiful apartments for workers,” he said.

His remarks contribute to the ongoing debate about the future of the controversial National Cathedral project, which has drawn criticism for their high costs, lack of transparency, and their alignment with national priorities.

‘Support the Asantehene’s conflict mediation process’ – GBA to traditional leaders in Bawku

President of the GBA, Efua Ghartey President of the GBA, Efua Ghartey

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has urged all parties involved in the conflict mediation process in Bawku to fully cooperate in efforts to restore peace and stability to the area.

This appeal was contained in a set of resolutions adopted during the Association’s recent mid-year conference.

The GBA also pledged its support for the ongoing conflict mediation process.

“The Ghana Bar Association, noting with deep concern the conflict in Bawku and recognising its devastating impact on lives, property, and national cohesion, hereby resolves as follows: It commends the urgent and genuine mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict, emphasizing the importance of peace, dialogue, and national unity.

“The GBA calls for strong and unwavering support for the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and all traditional authorities engaged in the mediation process, and urges all parties to cooperate fully and respect the outcomes of mediation efforts aimed at restoring peace to Bawku,” it noted.

It reaffirmed its commitment to the conflict mediation process.

“The GBA commits to using its voice and platform to advocate for a peaceful resolution and will support any constitutional and legal measures necessary to secure enduring peace in Bawku,” it added.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has commenced a high-level mediation process aimed at resolving the protracted conflict in Bawku.

His intervention is expected to end decades of ethnic tension and violent clashes in the area, which have claimed lives, displaced residents, and undermined socio-economic development.

Sports Minister Backs GFA President Despite Challenges

0

Kofi Adams and Kurt in a handshake

SPORTS AND RECREATION Minister Kofi Adams has voiced strong support for Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, praising his leadership despite recent struggles by the national teams.

Since Okraku assumed office in 2019, Ghana’s football fortunes, particularly those of the Black Stars have dipped, culminating in the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in two decades.

However, Minister Adams believes Okraku’s administration has achieved notable progress. “As challenging as the football system has been, Kurt Okraku has not done badly. He has corrected many wrongs,” Adams said.

He noted that while the GFA has solid development plans, their major hurdle has been execution. Highlighting achievements like the “Catch Them Young” referee initiative and the development of the Prampram training centre, Adams praised these efforts as signs of growth.

He added that CAF’s recognition of Ghana’s reforms likely influenced Okraku’s recent appointment as CAF’s second Vice President, underlining the international approval of Ghana’s football development path.

National Security operatives attempt to abscond with seized galamsey excavators

0

JoyNews has learned that a group of security operatives, who identified themselves as members of the National Security, allegedly attempted to remove five heavy-duty excavators from the office yard of the Ashanti Regional Forestry Commission.

According to JoyNews’ environmental journalist, Erastus Asare Donkoh, who has been closely covering the issue of illegal mining (galamsey) in the country, the armed men stormed the premises of the commission and made off with five of the machines.

Erastus reported that the men claimed they were acting on orders from a higher political authority to take the seized machines.

He noted that there was a confrontation between the commission’s officers and the security personnel, but the officers were overpowered, and the machines were driven away.

However, shortly after the machines were taken, the security men returned all five excavators to the commission. Upon inquiry, it was revealed that the so-called political authority had ordered the return of the machines.

Erastus explained that these excavators had been seized by the commission from illegal miners operating within forest reserves in the Ashanti region.

At the time of this report, JoyNews could not confirm the individuals behind the action.

“It is still unclear who directed that the seized excavators from the Kyemira extension of the Offin Shelter Belt should be returned or released,” he told Maame Esi Nyamekye Thompson on Joy FM’s midday news on Tuesday, 29th April.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and GBA president Efua Ghartey Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and GBA president Efua Ghartey

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has finally released details of the resolutions passed at its 2025 mid-year conference on the ongoing petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The details confirm earlier reports that the GBA is demanding that President John Dramani Mahama revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo.

The association stated that the suspension of the Chief Justice by President Mahama was unconstitutional.

It argued that Mahama was not a judicial officer and there are no laws currently that give him the power to use his discretion to suspend the Chief Justice.

“The Ghana Bar Association calls for the immediate revocation of the suspension of the Chief Justice, as it considers the suspension to be unconstitutional, considering the fact that the President, who is not a judge or judicial officer, exercised his discretion to suspend the Chief Justice under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution in the absence of a published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument, or Regulation(s) governing the exercise of his said discretion as required by Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution,” part of the resolution reads.

The association also demanded that President Mahama immediately release details of the determination of the prima facie case by the President and the Council of State.

“In addition, the Ghana Bar Association calls upon the President of the Republic of Ghana to immediately release the full decision establishing a prima facie case against the Chief Justice, consistent with established precedent. This disclosure is necessary to ensure that the process is conducted in accordance with the principles of transparency and fairness,” it said.

Furthermore, the GBA demanded the withdrawal of a directive from the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, concerning the assignment of courts and the fixing of dates for newly filed cases and applications.

Former Accra Hearts of Oak captain Amankwah Mireku has shared his thoughts on the upcoming clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, cautioning Hearts of Oak fans against expecting the dominance displayed in past encounters.

The two clubs will face off at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 3 pm. Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated fixture on GSP1, Mireku reflected on how the rivalry has evolved into a much more balanced contest in recent years.

“Hearts of Oak and Kotoko games are unpredictable. It’s not like during my time, when you could confidently claim we would beat Kotoko, as we did in the famous 4-0 victory,” he remarked.

During Mireku’s playing days, Hearts of Oak often enjoyed periods of superiority over their archrivals, approaching matches with unwavering confidence. However, he acknowledged that those days are behind them, though he remains hopeful.

“It’s going to be a tough match. Kotoko may be higher up the table, but that doesn’t guarantee victory. I believe Hearts of Oak still have a chance,” he added.

Both clubs are under pressure to perform. Hearts of Oak currently sit 6th on the league table, eight points behind the leaders, Goldstars, as they aim to mount a late title charge.

Asante Kotoko, meanwhile, are 4th on the table, just three points off the top, keeping their title hopes alive as the Super Clash approaches.

King Paluta is not the underdog in TGMA Artiste of the Year race – Manager

0

Rapper and singer King Paluta released not one, not two, but three hit songs during the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) year under review.

This has left his manager, Cofy Dela, puzzled as to why King Paluta is often labeled an underdog in the Artiste of the Year (AOTY) race.

Cofy Dela is baffled by the persistent underdog designation whenever the three potential AOTY winners—Stonebwoy, King Promise, and King Paluta—are mentioned, even though it’s clear that King Paluta has more than earned a seat at the table.

He believes that after dropping three bangers—‘Makoma,’ ‘Aseda,’ and ‘For the Papping (Apicki)’—King Paluta, born Thomas Adjei Wireko, deserves to be acknowledged as a serious contender, not just an afterthought in AOTY conversations.

In an interview with on Tuesday, April 22, Cofy Dela passionately defended his artiste’s status following a standout year.

Cofy Dela argued that the ‘Makoma’ hitmaker’s influence in the music industry during the review year has been unmatched. He highlighted King Paluta’s consistency, hit releases, and strong fan engagement as indicators of his leading position among his competitors.

“By the records available, King Paluta deserves it more than any other artiste in the AOTY category because his presence and impact in the year under review are dominant across the board. Among the contenders, can anyone mention even two hit songs in the award year?

“King Paluta doesn’t only have one or two but three hits—‘Aseda,’ ‘Makoma,’ and ‘For the Papping (Apicki),’ which are not mere releases, but pure bangers. They are street anthems that dominated the airwaves and resonated deeply with the people.

“And during last year’s election campaign season, Paluta’s songs played a significant role in energising political rallies. Did any of the contenders have such influence? No!”

Cofy Dela also expressed his frustration that the AOTY debate has shifted to international influence, and that King Paluta’s physical appearance is being used against him for an award whose criteria are already spelt out.

Moving away from the AOTY discussion, Cofy Dela shared what motivated him to manage King Paluta, saying, “I was inspired and drawn to King Paluta’s unique vision, drive, passion, and commitment to his craft.

“He is the true definition of perseverance, dedication, and consistency. This belief has fueled the desire to help realise his full potential and achieve success,” he said.

MahamaCares a beacon of hope for Ghanaians with chronic diseases

0

President John Dramani Mahama has described the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (MahamaCares) initiative as a beacon of hope for thousands of Ghanaians battling long-term health conditions.

He said the fund is more than just a healthcare programme—it is a symbol of hope for families across the country.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative on Tuesday, April 29, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Mr Mahama stated, “Today, April 29, we are launching more than just an initiative. We are launching hope – hope for thousands of Ghanaians living with chronic diseases, hope for families battling the overwhelming cost of care.”

He stressed that the fund represents a vital step towards achieving health equity, noting, “This is hope for a future where the quality of life is not determined by one’s ability to pay for essential treatment.”

President Mahama explained that the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund is designed to support specialist-level treatment for a range of chronic illnesses, including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, and stroke.

He noted that the fund aims to close a major gap in Ghana’s healthcare system, where the cost of advanced treatment often makes it inaccessible to many.

According to Mr Mahama, the initiative underscores his commitment to building a more inclusive healthcare system—one in which no Ghanaian is left behind due to financial hardship.

Health Minister to donate three months of his salary to Ghana Medical Trust Fund

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed appreciation for the outpouring of public support for the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), citing unexpected donations from individuals, including a generous contribution from a pensioner.

This comes after President John Dramani Mahama announced that he is leading by example by giving up half of his annual salary to support healthcare in Ghana through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

The move aims to bolster medical services and improve access to quality healthcare for patients battling chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme on Tuesday, April 29, Mr Akandoh shared a particularly moving moment.

“I was surprised that some people offered to voluntarily donate money to the initiative. I can recall a pensioner, Prof Ayittey, generously contributing a substantial amount of 1,000 dollars to support the cause,” he shared.

He highlighted the inspiring response as evidence of the wide-reaching impact and public goodwill surrounding the fund, which was unveiled by former President John Mahama to support specialist treatment for chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and kidney failure.

In a further show of solidarity, Mr Akandoh announced his personal commitment to the cause.

“Since the President has pledged to donate his six months’ salary to support the initiative, I am also donating three months’ salary to the fund,” he said.

He added that fellow ministers have also pledged their support. “Other ministers, such as Ofosu Agyare, Naa Momo Lartey, and others, have pledged to contribute one month’s salary in support.”

Withdraw case assignment directive – GBA to acting CJ Baffoe-Bonnie

0

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called on the Acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to withdraw the directive concerning the assignment of courts and scheduling of newly filed cases and applications, citing concerns over clarity and the need for efficient justice delivery.

In a statement dated April 26, the GBA described the directive as “uncertain” and potentially disruptive to the judicial process.

The Association emphasised the need for transparency and predictability in how cases are assigned, particularly in a system where timely access to justice remains critical.

The GBA further urged the Judiciary to embrace and enhance the use of technology in the assignment of cases to various courts.

It argued that a tech-based approach would improve efficiency, reduce human interference, and promote fairness and transparency in the administration of justice.

“Recognising that the directive by His Lordship, the Acting Chief Justice on the assignment of cases by his office is uncertain and having regard to the importance of technology and the urgency of justice delivery, the Ghana Bar Association respectfully requests that this directive be withdrawn,” the statement read.

I’ll continue to serve any IGP appointed by government – ACP Kofi Sarpong

0

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and gospel musician Kofi Sarpong has said he will continue to serve any Inspector General of Police (IGP) appointed by the government until the opportunity to serve as IGP is divinely placed in his hands.

Speaking on programme on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, ACP Sarpong responded to a question about whether he harbours ambitions of becoming the IGP someday.

“Destiny is in the hands of the Lord. He prepares, appoints and promotes. As I sit here now, I serve whoever is the IGP. I serve the present administration. Whoever will come, I will serve same. If it falls on my lap someday, I don’t know — but thanks be to God. But I am now serving,” he replied.

Reflecting on his journey in the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kofi Sarpong narrated that he began his career after completing Berekum Senior High School.

He revealed that he entered the service without a university degree and started from the very bottom of the rank structure, as a constable, after his training.

“After the training, I was Constable Class 2,” he said.

He continued that although he joined the Police Service straight from senior high school, he did not allow that to limit him. He pursued a short course shortly after passing out, and that step played a crucial role in his rise through the ranks.

“Because of the short course I did at the time, we had that dispensation that if you had a higher degree, you would be promoted to the rank of Chief Inspector. So I was promoted from the rank of Constable to Chief Inspector,” he shared.

He added that this opened the door for direct entry into the Police Academy, now known as the Police College, where he graduated as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He was later promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), a milestone that inspired him to release an album.

“With direct entrance into the Police Academy, now Police College, I graduated as Assistant Superintendent of Police. Then I had DSP — that is Deputy Superintendent of Police. That is where, by God’s grace, I came up with an album,” he revealed.

He shared that his career continued to progress with further promotions — from Superintendent of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police, and now Assistant Commissioner of Police.

While acknowledging the role of divine grace in his journey, ACP Sarpong emphasized that discipline has been a critical part of his growth in the service and that it is discipline that has kept him serving for over 20 years.

“The Police Service is a disciplinary institution. Immediately you decide to enter, there are rules and regulations that you will have to follow. If you follow them all through, you will not have any problem. Be at duty at 8 a.m., you are there. You have been instructed to do something, you do it. If you are disciplined, obedient and follow the rules of the service, you are good to go,” he said.

Considering his current rank, which could potentially pave the way for a future as IGP, the ACP reiterated that although the future remains uncertain, he is content serving diligently under any IGP appointed by the state — trusting that God’s plan for his life will unfold in its own time.

GBA Demands Full Disclosure of Prima Facie Decision Against Chief Justice

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, April 29, GNA – The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has urged President John Mahama to release the full decision establishing a prima facie case against the Chief Justice, citing established precedent.

The Association said that transparency and fairness should guide the process.

In a resolution signed by National President Mrs. Efua Ghartey and National Secretary Kwaku Gyau Baffour after its mid-year conference, the GBA condemned unsubstantiated political commentary that undermines the Judiciary’s independence and integrity.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the sanctity of the judicial process and pledged legal measures to safeguard the Judiciary from undue interference or attacks.

The GBA earlier urged the Committee reviewing petitions against the Chief Justice to uphold the Rule of Law.

It emphasized that all individuals involved should act in accordance with Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution to preserve the Judiciary’s independence and image.

On the suspension of the Chief Justice, the Bar Association called for its immediate revocation, arguing that it was unconstitutional.

It noted that the President, not being a judge or judicial officer, exercised discretion under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution without a published Constitutional Instrument, Statutory Instrument, or Regulation, as required by Article 296.

The GBA also called for clear regulations under Article 146 of the Constitution to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in proceedings involving Superior Court justices, particularly in impeachment or removal cases.

Acting under Article 146(6) of the Constitution and after consultations with the Council of State, President Mahama determined that a prima facie case had been established in response to three petitions against the Chief Justice.

Consequently, a committee has been established in line with Article 146(6) and in consultation with the Council of State.

My colleagues have chosen to insult me merely for attention – Agya Koo reacts

0

Veteran Kumawood actor Agya Koo has expressed disappointment over what he describes as mistreatment from some of his colleagues in the film industry.

According to him, despite consistently showing respect, several of his peers have resorted to insulting him publicly in a bid to gain attention.

Agya Koo’s reaction follows a recent comment by Michael Afranie, who alleged that he declined to attend the recently held AshantiFest in Kumasi due to a ‘guilty conscience’ linked to his affiliation with the immediate past NPP government.

In a post shared on X on April 28, 2025, Agya Koo dismissed such claims, asserting that he has always maintained respectful communication and has never spoken ill of his colleagues.

He called on his peers to steer clear of sensationalism and instead focus on more meaningful discourse.

“Despite years in politics, I’ve maintained a record of respectful dialogue, never speaking ill of colleagues. Sadly, some have chosen to insult me for attention. Let’s focus on substance over sensationalism,” he posted.

Barker-Vormawor leads man wrongly kept in prison for 7 years to sue police, government for GH¢9.9m

0

A subsistence farmer from Nankese in the Eastern Region, Kwabena Huletey, is seeking GH¢9.9 million in damages for a seven-year ordeal of wrongful imprisonment that he said shattered his health, family, and livelihood.

Represented by private legal practitioner and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, of Merton and Everette LLP, Huletey has sued the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Prisons Service, and the Attorney General, alleging systemic neglect and false accusations that led to his unjust detention.

According to a report by the Fourth Estate, Huletey’s troubles began in 2015 when he traveled to Akuapem Adawso to plan a customary marriage with 19-year-old Dela Hunukeh, a family friend’s daughter.

Recently separated from his first wife, with whom he had three children, Huletey embraced the match, unaware of the tragedy that would follow.

He soon discovered Hunukeh suffered from a chronic illness, and her family hoped the union would ease the financial burden of her treatment.

Despite his limited resources as a farmer, Huletey shouldered her medical costs, funding trips to health facilities at Adawso, Mampong, Tinkong, and eventually the Koforidua Roman Catholic Hospital.

The financial strain proved overwhelming for Huletey, who was unable to further afford immediate treatment for his fiancée.

After discussions with Hunukeh’s family, they agreed to delay additional hospital visits until Huletey could sell farm produce for funds.

Tragically, Hunukeh passed away before treatment could resume, succumbing to her illness, later identified as pneumonia.

In a twist of events, Huletey was arrested and charged with her murder, despite no evidence linking him to her death.

The Mampong District Court remanded him into custody, pending investigations and a year later, in 2016, the court ordered his release due to the failiure of state prosecutors and the police to bring a case against him.

However, instead of being granted his freedom, Huletey was inexplicably returned to Koforidua Prison by a police officer, with no legal basis.

There, he remained for five more years, abandoned by the system until the Justice for All Programme secured his release in 2022.

The seven years behind bars left Huletey broken.

According to his lawyers, he now battles severe lower back pain, muscle and bone ailments, hearing loss in his right ear, vision deterioration, and cognitive issues, including memory loss and confusion, all exacerbated by prison conditions and medical neglect.

“Huletey was held in Koforidua Prisons for 7 years, for killing someone when the person died from pneumonia. He was not even there when the person died.

“The court struck out the matter, but he was still kept in custody for the 7 years, because the CID just left him inside there,” Barker-Vormawor detailed in a Facebook post.

The emotional devastation, according to the Fourth Estate report, has equally been profound on Huletey.

During his detention, his sister, who relied on him financially, suffered a mental breakdown, his mother died without his knowledge, and he lost contact with his daughter and grandchildren.

The collapse of his marriage and family ties deepened his sense of loss, leaving him with “immeasurable emotional pain and deep psychological trauma,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit demands GH¢9.9 million, including GH¢500,000 for violating Huletey’s liberty and fair trial rights, GH¢500,000 for physical and psychological suffering, GH¢2 million for permanent health issues, GH¢500,000 for emotional trauma, GH¢3 million for lost livelihood, GH¢1 million for his marriage’s dissolution, GH¢1 million for separation from his daughter and grandchildren, GH¢1 million for severed family ties, and GH¢400,000 for legal fees.

Ghanaian football fans fume over Super Clash ticket prices

Players of Hearts and Kotoko during a game Players of Hearts and Kotoko during a game

Ghanaian football fans have taken to social media to express disbelief and frustration over the ticket prices announced for the upcoming Super Clash, describing them as inflated for a local league match.

Accra Hearts of Oak will face Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.

The highly anticipated clash has always attracted massive interest, but this time, the spotlight is on the pricing rather than the players.

With VIP and standard ticket prices significantly higher than usual, fans quickly flooded social media with humorous and sarcastic commentary.

Many argued that the current state of the Ghana Premier League does not justify such high prices, citing the league’s declining quality and low attendance in recent years.

Several commenters pointed out that even Black Stars matches, featuring top international players, are often more affordably priced.

As a result, many questioned why a local league match should cost more than a national team fixture, especially when interest in the Ghana Premier League continues to wane.

The general sentiment is that the ticket fees are out of touch with both the quality of the product on offer and the economic realities faced by the average Ghanaian supporter.

Despite the backlash, both clubs are under pressure to deliver on the pitch. Hearts of Oak currently sit 6th on the league table, eight points behind leaders Goldstars, and are hoping to mount a late title charge.

Asante Kotoko, on the other hand, are 4th and just three points off the top, keeping their title hopes very much alive. With both giants still in contention, the Super Clash remains a crucial fixture, but whether fans will show up in large numbers remains to be seen.

I wanted to be a teacher, but being a police officer is a calling – ACP Kofi Sarpong

0

Ghanaian gospel musician and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Kofi Sarpong, has shared a fascinating story of how he transitioned from a childhood dream of becoming a teacher to answering the call of duty as a police officer.

Speaking on programme on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, ACP Sarpong reflected on how his path shifted, guided by what he now believes was divine purpose.

Like every child, Kofi Sarpong had a clear vision for his future.

“My ambition for the future at that time was to be a teacher because I love children a lot,” he shared.

He noted that even during his secondary school days at Berekum Senior High School (SHS), his desire to teach remained strong, which led him to pursue General Arts.

However, an encounter with former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Nana Owusu-Nsiah, in Accra changed everything.

“I still wanted to be a teacher even when I was in high school, until one day, I came to Accra to pay a visit to some people I knew. I met the former Inspector General of Police, Nana Owusu-Nsiah.

“We came from the same town. When I met him, he told me that the police were conducting an enlistment exercise, so he advised me to join,” he narrated.

According to him, his initial reaction was to reject the idea.

However, he said that later that night, a news segment on television showing large crowds of hopeful recruits caught his attention and stirred something in him, leading him to reconsider his decision.

“Later in the evening, I was watching television and saw the crowd. So I quickly went to Berekum, picked up my certificate, and met the team at Kumasi, where they were conducting another round of recruitment two weeks later,” he recounted.

That decision marked the beginning of a new chapter. After passing the recruitment and completing his training, ACP Sarpong was posted to the Police Headquarters, where his life as an officer officially began.

Looking back, ACP Kofi Sarpong said he has never regretted taking that path.

“Through the service and the gift of God, I have been able to impact children, and even young men and women. Sometimes, when I’m walking, I hear children shouting my name, ‘Kofi Sarpong, Kofi Sarpong.’ I feel the joy. I do not regret it at all,” he remarked.

He describes his role in the Ghana Police Service not as a job, but as a calling.

“God made us and everything around us. He protects life and property, and by extension, He has given me the opportunity as a police officer to do the same. If I do it well, then I’ve fulfilled what I wanted to do because life and property, including children, are protected,” he stated.

What started as a dream to educate has blossomed into a life of service, and in the eyes of ACP Kofi Sarpong, it is all part of a greater plan.

National Apprenticeship Programme reserves 60% for women, 15% for PWDs

0

Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has announced that the National Apprenticeship Programme will prioritize the inclusion of marginalized groups, reserving 60% of available slots for women and 15% for persons with disabilities.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, the Minister emphasized the need for inclusive development, stating that women, often marginalized in employment opportunities, are a key focus of the programme.

“Women are a key component of what we are doing because they are mostly a marginalized group. Therefore, we are reserving a percentage of applications for women. We hope to achieve a maximum of 60% of the total applications from women and 15% for people living with disabilities to ensure that our initiative is inclusive for all marginalized individuals in our society,” he said.

The Minister added that men are not excluded. However, he encouraged more women and persons with disabilities to apply in order to ensure broader representation and impact.

“While we welcome applications from men, we hope to see more women apply so that everyone is well represented. Additionally, we are including individuals within the galamsey enclave and those who are being rehabilitated from drug abuse, so they can create a better life for themselves.”

The programme, launched on March 19, is being implemented by the National Youth Authority (NYA) and aims to provide practical, vocational training to equip young Ghanaians with employable skills.

It also targets individuals from galamsey-prone areas and those recovering from drug abuse, offering them a pathway to rehabilitation and sustainable livelihoods.
