According to GhanaWeb, the Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, has refuted claims that he was detained by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Addressing his congregation in a video shared by Asaase Radio on X on Saturday, March 15, 2025, Rev. Kusi Boateng categorically denied any arrest.
He dismissed accusations of attempting to flee the country and emphasized that he is a law-abiding citizen who has committed no wrongdoing.
He questioned the logic behind the reports suggesting his arrest, noting that he was physically present and addressing his congregation.
“And now, people are claiming I’ve been arrested. How can someone who has been arrested be standing here? Maybe they arrested my ghost,” he remarked in Twi.
Rev. Kusi Boateng expressed concern over the growing spread of falsehoods, lamenting the prevalence of dishonesty in society, including among religious leaders.
He decried the current state of affairs, where misinformation appears to dominate public discourse.
Clarifying his interactions with the authorities, he explained that he had only met with security officials upon his return to Ghana to discuss matters related to the National Cathedral project.
He stressed that this meeting had been brief and reiterated that he was not arrested or stopped while leaving or entering the country.
Reports had circulated that Rev. Kusi Boateng was detained by the NIB over allegations of dual identity. According to a report by Citi Newsroom, he was assisting with investigations.
In 2023, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu and current Foreign Affairs Minister, accused Rev. Kusi Boateng of using multiple identities, including holding passports and identification cards under different names and dates of birth.
Ablakwa alleged that a company owned by Rev. Kusi Boateng, JNS Talent Centre Ltd., received GH¢2.6 million for the National Cathedral project under a different alias.
Ablakwa further claimed that credible documents in his possession confirmed that Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng and Kwabena Adu Gyamfi are the same individual.
Despite these allegations, Rev. Kusi Boateng continues to serve as an Executive Council Member and Director on the National Cathedral Board.
Former Auditor-General and member of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has called on Ghanaians to exercise patience regarding demands for immediate prosecutions following the submission of the ORAL report to the President.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Domelevo clarified that the report’s primary objective was to gather information, emphasizing that due process must be followed before any legal action is initiated.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive legal and financial review before moving forward with prosecutions or arrests.
“I have had some engagement with the AG, and I think his line of thought is so much in sync with mine. He thinks that we may have to leverage more on the audit. So people are asking when are there going to be prosecutions or when are there going to be arrests.
“I think it is premature. People should understand that all we did was to gather information. We have not even heard from the other side.
“Ghanaians should be a little bit patient. This process cannot be rushed unduly, otherwise, we will falter when we get to court. They should give the AG and maybe the Auditor-General some breathing space so that these cases can be referred to the Auditor-General to conduct a value-for-money audit and also a compliance audit to see if they comply with the laws and regulations.
“If there were some losses, then the Auditor-General can activate his mandate to disallow and surcharge,” he stated.

The Ministry of Education has disclosed that the government is committed to improving the overall student experience in technical universities.
At the grand durbar commemorating the 25th anniversary of Bolgatanga Technical University, deputy education minister Dr. Clement Apaak speaking on behalf of sector minister Haruna Iddrisu outlined several initiatives the government plans to implement.
He noted that students should have access to affordable accommodation, reliable transportation, quality healthcare, and other essential services.
Dr. Apaak, who also represents the Builsa South constituency, stated that the government will introduce several policies aimed at enhancing teaching and learning at technical universities.
“Recognising the importance of student welfare, this government is committed to improving the overall student experience in technical universities. We understand that for students to excel, they must have access to affordable accommodation, reliable transportation, quality healthcare services, and financial aid programmes.
“To this end, we plan to implement:
“No-Academic-Fee Policy (No-Fee Stress Initiative): An allocation of GH¢499.8 million has been provided to cover academic fees for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions.
“Enhanced Student Loan Scheme: We will increase the accessibility and efficiency of student loan disbursement to ensure that no student drops out due to financial constraints.
“Improved Campus Infrastructure: We will expand hostels, recreational facilities, and digital libraries to create a conducive learning environment.
“Enhanced Internship and Job Placement Programs: We will establish stronger linkages with industry leaders to facilitate a seamless transition from school to employment.
“Mental Health and Counselling Services: Strengthening student support systems to provide guidance, career counselling, and mental health services to those in need will be prioritised,” he outlined.
The celebration was held under the theme “25 Years of Technical Education: Impact, Challenges, and Prospects.” Dr. Apaak explained that the theme is both timely and relevant, noting that President John Dramani Mahama recognises Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a critical driver of socio-economic development.
He added that this commitment is documented in the 2024 manifesto of the NDC.
Dr. Apaak further indicated that countries that have prioritised technical education have experienced significant advancements in their industrial sectors, job creation, and technological innovation, and the government is determined to achieve similar outcomes.

Addressing the media in Parliament, Rev. Ntim Fordjour voiced his concerns about political interference in leadership transitions within Ghana’s security services.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining continuity in leadership to strengthen institutions and foster professionalism within the security sector.
He highlighted that various security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Fire Service, Ghana Prisons Service, and Ghana Armed Forces, are staffed by professionals dedicated to their duties.
He called on both the NPP and NDC to reduce political influence in the appointment and removal of these security heads, especially when their terms have not yet expired.
Rev. Ntim Fordjour underscored the importance of institutional trust and urged political parties to adopt a governance approach that respects the tenures of security leaders, regardless of which party is in power.
He argued that respecting the full terms of security leaders such as IGPs or Chiefs of Defence Staff would promote professionalism, enhance trust in governance, and strengthen the integrity of Ghana’s security institutions.
According to him, this approach would ultimately lead to more effective security agencies and contribute positively to national security and governance.
Professor Peter Quartey of the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana, has urged policymakers to impose a strict debt ceiling, implement prudent financial management strategies, and strengthen institutional oversight over the country’s resources.
He is also emphasising the need for greater transparency in public procurement and better planning for capital projects to avoid misallocation of resources.
Prof. Quartey made the recommendations when he delivered a thought-provoking analysis of the nation’s borrowing practices and its effects on investment and growth at the 2025 Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences Inaugural Lecture, where the growing debate over Ghana’s debt sustainability took centre stage.
Under the theme “Debt, Investment, and Growth in Ghana: Did We Borrow to Consume?”He examined whether Ghana’s increasing debt levels have translated into productive investments and concluded, invariably, that they have not.
Over the last decade, Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio has soared, reaching unsustainable levels.
He argued that while borrowing is a crucial tool for financing development, Professor Quartey stressed that its benefits depend on how effectively funds are allocated.
Prof. Quartey argued that excessive debt can act as a “tax on investment,” thereby discouraging economic growth if it is not properly managed.
Ghana’s capital expenditure, which should ideally drive infrastructure and economic expansion, has plummeted.
In 2010, it stood at 6.9% of GDP, but by 2023, it had declined to just 2.4%. Despite securing substantial loans, the country has struggled to invest in long-term growth projects.
Professor Quartey used three case studies to illustrate the importance of financial discipline, recounting the story of an extravagant tech entrepreneur who squandered his fortune, and contrasted it with that of Ronald Read, a modest janitor who accumulated wealth through strategic investing.
The lesson, he said, was clear: financial success hinges more on behaviour than intelligence, a principle that he said also applies to national economic management.
Ghana has undertaken several major projects funded by external loans, including the Sinohydro and Afreximbank agreements. However, many of these initiatives have faced delays and cost overruns.
He said the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam project, for instance, meant to improve electricity generation and irrigation, is yet to take off six years after its approval, raising questions about the efficiency of public investment
Prof. Quartey also highlighted the shift in Ghana’s borrowing patterns, with a move away from concessional multilateral loans towards expensive international capital markets.
This shift, he argued, necessitates a critical reassessment of whether borrowed funds have been invested in high-return investments or merely used to service existing debts and fund recurrent expenditure.
He cautioned against the government returning to the capital market any time soon.
“The efficiency of investment is paramount. Ghana’s challenge is not merely borrowing but how the funds are allocated and managed,” he noted.
He also pointed out instances of inefficiencies in public financial management, citing extravagant expenditures and the lack of competitive procurement processes.
Beyond the need for debt ceiling, Prof Quartey also called for the strengthening of public financial management and diversifying exports to reduce reliance on external borrowing.

Former MP for Akuapem North, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, has threatened legal action against journalist Kwaku Annan over what she describes as “malicious, untrue and purposely calculated” allegations made against her on his programme.
In a cease-and-desist letter issued by her lawyers, the former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry dismissed claims aired on Annan’s show, The Frontline, in which he alleged that she had been declared wanted by the Ghana Police in connection with a crime involving the publication of nudity.
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has held a meeting with officials from the Ghana Gas, and other stakeholders.
They include the project contractor, and the Ketu South Municipal Assembly aimed to address the delays in completing a 15-unit housing project meant for residents of Agavedzi, Amutinu, and Salakope – coastal communities severely affected by tidal waves.
The meeting was aimed at resolving bottlenecks in the project’s execution and ensuring that displaced families receive the housing relief they were promised.
During the discussions, each stakeholder provided updates on their responsibilities, highlighting key challenges that had stalled progress.
It became evident that the current site conditions were not suitable for construction completion, necessitating a more comprehensive engineering approach to ensure long-term stability.
Mr. Augustus Awity, the Volta Regional Chief Director, joined the Minister in posing critical questions to the project team and demanding clear timelines and action plans for the way forward.
In his remarks, Minister reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the affected communities received the support urgently needed.
“We recognize the urgency of this project and the need to deliver sustainable solutions for our people. We will continue to push for swift action and ensure that these families are not left without shelter,” he assured.
He emphasised that beyond short-term housing relief, the government was also exploring long-term coastal protection measures to safeguard these communities from recurring tidal wave disasters.
The engagement ended with renewed commitments from Ghana Gas and other stakeholders to fast-track the necessary engineering assessments and resume work on the housing project as soon as possible.
Residents of Agavedzi, Amutinu, and Salakope are hopeful that this intervention will lead to a lasting solution to their displacement and housing challenges.

Renowned legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has claimed that former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, excessively lobbied to be retained in office.
According to Kpebu, a source close to the presidency revealed that Dr. Dampare made persistent efforts to secure his position under President John Dramani Mahama.
He stated that the president felt harassed due to the overwhelming number of calls he received, urging him to retain the former IGP.
“Let me say this so that people can learn. My sources say Dampare overdid the lobbying, he went too far.
“I hear that everywhere the president went, many people were telling him, ‘Keep Dampare, keep Dampare.’ He went into overdrive. I understand the president felt harassed, he was overwhelmed,” Kpebu said.
The lawyer also suggested that the ongoing Supreme Court case, which challenges the president’s authority to remove heads of security agencies, is unlikely to reverse President Mahama’s decision to dismiss Dr. Dampare.
He explained that if the Supreme Court rules that IGPs and other security agency heads cannot be removed before their tenure ends, the ruling could impact future appointments rather than past decisions.
“When the Supreme Court delivers its interpretation, it will also decide whether the ruling applies prospectively or retrospectively. You remember the Domelevo case? By the time the ruling came, it was too late, the horses had already bolted, and Domelevo had retired.
“So it means that if a favorable ruling comes, it will most likely apply to future IGPs rather than reinstating past ones,” he explained.
Kpebu further emphasised that the IGP position is a security role, not one that operates with complete independence from the government.
“The IGP is a security position. Each president appoints their own IGP,” he added.
On March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama relieved Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of his duties.
He subsequently appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police.
A statement issued by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the appointment was made in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector General of Police.”
“He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read.

Accra, March 15, GNA- The Management of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) says all promotions at the Company have been conducted in strict adherence to established protocols.
The company said this included departmental recommendations and thorough evaluation by panels comprising no fewer than six members.
A statement issued in Accra by GACL said this also included representatives from the Public Services Commission and appropriate professional associations.
It said management had taken note of recent publications containing several allegations regarding appointments and promotions within the organization.
The statement said these claims and allegations were false.
It said interviews were conducted from May to July of 2024, and appointment letters were issued in August and September of 2024.
It said Ms. Felicia Edem Attipoe had not resumed post at GACL since January 2025, contrary to claims in the publication.
The statement said Mr. Gideon Grumah’s promotion to the position of Director, Commercial Services, was approved by the GACL Board in 2023, prior to the appointment of the current Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.
“The allegation that individuals were elevated to top management positions after only three months of engagement is categorically false,” it added.
It said staff members, who received promotions, had served the company for extended periods, with many having remained at officer level for 15-20 years despite their contributions.
The statement said Mr. Eric Nartey Yeboah’s appointment followed due process with an interview and was approved by the GACL Board.
It said it was imperative to state that GACL remained committed to merit-based advancement for all staff.

At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated that all indications suggested Ofori-Atta had absconded from Ghana to evade investigations into alleged corruption.
He subsequently declared Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive, wanted for corruption and related offences.
However, six days later, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) removed the former finance minister from its list of wanted persons following communication from his legal team confirming his voluntary return to Ghana.
On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers informed the OSP of a definite date for his return to the country.
In response, the OSP deemed the stated return date reasonable and rescheduled his attendance accordingly.
As a result, Ken Ofori-Atta was removed from the OSP’s wanted list and is no longer considered a fugitive, pending his return on the agreed date.
The former finance minister is under investigation regarding contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for revenue assurance in the petroleum and minerals sectors.
Another investigation concerns the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Technology Limited for distribution loss reduction and network improvement.
Additionally, he is being investigated over procurement, payments, and activities related to the controversial National Cathedral project.
Furthermore, he has been linked to contracts awarded by the Ministry of Health, initially through the Ministry for Special Development Initiatives, to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 305 CDI ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.
The OSP is also examining payments made from and the utilization of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s tax refund account.

According to a report from GhanaWeb, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has urged the Mahama administration to adopt decisive measures to address the persistent power outages, popularly known as ‘dumsor,’ that are affecting the country.
His call comes amidst growing frustration among Ghanaians over the recurring blackouts. Afenyo-Markin criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for the return of power outages just three months into its tenure.
Speaking during parliamentary proceedings on March 14, 2025, Afenyo-Markin expressed disappointment that the government has not prioritized resolving the electricity crisis.
“We are barely three months into office under this new administration, and we don’t expect dumsor to return,” he said.
Referring to the recent dismissal of Dr. Akuffo Dampare as the Inspector General of Police, he urged the administration to apply the same level of urgency and commitment to addressing the country’s power challenges.
He noted that the announcement of Dampare’s removal and the appointment of COP Yohuno as his replacement had been executed swiftly, but the same urgency was absent in tackling the energy crisis.
Afenyo-Markin expressed concern that the government’s official communication on the IGP’s dismissal failed to acknowledge his contributions, instead focusing solely on the replacement process.
Highlighting the ongoing power outages across various regions, Afenyo-Markin underscored the severe impact on daily life and economic activities.
He pointed out that the blackouts were disrupting homes, halting students’ studies, and threatening the survival of businesses.
To address these issues, he called on the Minister of Energy to present a detailed report on the load-shedding schedule to Parliament.
This, he argued, would help citizens plan their daily activities and mitigate the challenges caused by the outages.
Citing recent reports, Afenyo-Markin noted that scheduled outages had been announced for areas including Ashanti, Volta, Greater Accra, and Tema on March 11 and 12, while unscheduled blackouts lasting up to 24 hours had also been reported.
He emphasized that the situation was creating hardships for Ghanaians and urged the government to take the matter seriously.
Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for immediate action to mitigate the effects of the power crisis and restore stability to the energy sector.
In a renewed and intensified effort to clamp down on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana, a large-scale security operation in the Western Region has resulted in the arrest of 56 individuals and the destruction of 25 changfang machines used in unauthorized gold extraction. The operation, spearheaded by a joint security task force, was conducted on Thursday, March 13, 2025, in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
The Western Regional Security Council, in collaboration with security personnel from the Western Naval Command, the Second Infantry Battalion, and the Ghana Police Service, launched the crackdown in known illegal mining hotspots. These locations included six farms belonging to the Ghana Rubber Estate Company Ltd, North Palm Oil Plantation, Kadadwen, and several parts of the Mpohor District. This initiative is part of the government’s intensified campaign to combat galamsey, which has had severe environmental and socio-economic repercussions across the country.
During the operation, security forces set ablaze 25 changfang machines, which are widely used by illegal miners to wash and trap gold. Additionally, the task force confiscated various mining equipment, including three motorbikes, nine pumping machines, three excavators, and three pay-loaders, from different unauthorized mining sites in the Ahanta West Municipality and Mpohor District.
Brigadier General Musah Whajah (rtd), the Liaison Officer of National Security who led the mission, reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining and ensuring stricter enforcement of mining regulations.
“We made some arrests during today’s operation. This time, we’re taking a different approach. The suspects will be screened by the police, and those found culpable will be put before the court,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of legal action as a deterrent against galamsey activities.
The 56 individuals apprehended, comprising 47 men and nine women from Kadadwen, have been handed over to the Western Regional Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
In a separate but related operation, a Rapid Response Team from the Tarkwa and Takoradi Forest Districts of the Forestry Commission arrested eight additional illegal miners within the Subri Forest Reserve on March 12, 2025. Authorities seized seven motorcycles and three tricycles during this raid, and the suspects were subsequently transferred to the police for further legal processing.

A devastating accident occurred last Thursday on the outskirts of Akyem Boadua, involving a 15-seater Toyota Hiace mini-bus traveling from Kade to Accra. The bus was only a few minutes into its journey when the accident happened.
Tragically, eight people lost their lives instantly in the accident, while six others sustained injuries. The injured are currently receiving medical treatment at the Akwatia St Dominic Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased, seven women and one man, have been deposited at the morgue of the Akwatia St Dominic Hospital for autopsy and preservation. Relatives of the victims are urged to visit the hospital to identify the deceased and collect their remains for burial.
An eyewitness, Samuel Kwabiah, described the horrific scene, stating that the vehicle somersaulted five times before landing in the bush. The accident occurred less than five kilometers from Kade, where the bus had taken off.
Unfortunately, the vehicle’s number plate was lost in the crash, making it impossible to determine the registered vehicle number immediately after the accident. The police are still investigating the incident.
The driver of the vehicle is currently unaccounted for, and it is unclear whether they survived the accident. The police are working to locate the driver and determine the cause of the accident.
According to the Road Safety Committee, this stretch of road has a alarming history of accidents. Last year, 124 people lost their lives in road accidents on the Kade-Akyem Osenase portion of the Kade-Accra road. This year, eight people have already died on the same stretch between January and March.
Some eyewitnesses speculate that the driver may have been new to the road, which could have contributed to the accident. The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be revealed as it becomes available.

Vice Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Ghana’s Parliament Peter Lanchene Toobu has described the celebrations by some police officers following the removal of Dr George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) as “strange” and a matter of concern.
Speaking on The Forum aired on Asaase Radio on Saturday, March 15, Toobu noted that while the general public had mixed reactions to Dampare’s exit, reports of police officers jubilating should not be taken lightly.
“The general public had mixed feelings, but the police public started jubilating, and let’s not take this for granted. Even if 10 police officers out of about 40,000 started jubilating over the exit of the IGP, it should be a source of concern to all of us, and it is an area that we need to study,” he cautioned.
Toobu, who served in the Ghana Police Service before entering politics, called on Dr Dampare to reflect on his tenure and publicly account for his leadership decisions.
“I have said this since yesterday that Dr George Akuffo Dampare, after taking a rest for about a month or two, should be bold enough to have a public lecture and account for his stewardship, the vision he had, and the leadership style he applied. Where did he miss the road? He should be very honest. Where did he get it wrong?” he stated.
His remarks come amid ongoing debates about Dampare’s leadership, with some highlighting his reforms while others criticize his management style and alleged favouritism.
For Palgrave Boakye Danquah, a former Spokesperson on Governance and Security under the Akufo-Addo regime described Dampare’s leadership as strategic and transformational, highlighting over 30 key policies he introduced to modernize the police service.
He cited initiatives such as the Police Emergency Medical Intervention Fund, the e-payment system, road safety enforcement strategies, and efforts to curb rider indiscipline as examples of Dampare’s commitment to reforming the service.
“We saw an IGP who was interactive, engaging, and took full responsibility for police communication. Under him, crime levels dropped, and police integrity was upheld,” he stated.
“We have had instances in the past where police commanders released statements that were later found to be inaccurate, causing more harm than good. Dampare ensured that all communication came from the headquarters to maintain credibility and integrity,” he noted.
While acknowledging that leadership comes with challenges, Boakye Danquah maintained that Dampare’s tenure significantly improved policing in Ghana.
He urged the newly appointed IGP, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to build on these reforms and ensure continuity in efforts to enhance security and law enforcement across the country.

In pursuit of this goal, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), in collaboration with key stakeholders, has solicited research questions to identify data-driven solutions for better health outcomes.
Over a thousand research questions were submitted by Ghanaians from various sectors, covering areas such as maternal and newborn care, child and adolescent services, and broader healthcare concerns.
To determine which of the questions should be prioritized for further research and using the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) – a team of experts made of health officers, service users, donor partners in the health sector as well as other critical stakeholders were assembled in Koforidua and tasked to score them based on their urgency, impact among others.
The team assessed and scored the questions based on urgency, impact, and feasibility.
Ghana’s healthcare system faces significant challenges, ranging from maternal and newborn health to adolescent and elderly care.
However, responses to these concerns have often been reactive rather than research-driven. For donors and development partners, funding decisions rely heavily on credible data.
Felix Osei Sarpong, Health Specialist at UNICEF Ghana, emphasized the importance of an evidence-based approach in an interview with JoyNews.
“In our work with the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, we want to use evidence—evidence in all that we do in terms of support.
“Before one can really use evidence, there is a need to engage various stakeholders, get their input, so that the research agenda for the health system is actually tailored to the needs of Ghana.”
Dr. Sylvia Deganus, a retired obstetrician-gynecologist, highlighted the urgent need for mental health and psychosocial support for pregnant women.
“We’ve always realised the need for mental health and psychosocial support for pregnant women. There were a lot of issues raised in that direction, and I thought those were areas we need to explore.
“There were also questions about the quality of care we are providing to mothers—how to reduce maternal mortality. Antenatal coverage is very high, so it’s not about women coming in anymore, but what they receive when they come.”
Cynthia Nyaveh, a service user, shared her frustration with the National Ambulance Service, citing financial burdens faced by families during emergencies.
“I had a preterm baby and needed a referral to a bigger facility. Though the National Ambulance Service is publicly perceived as free, they explained that because it was outside the region, I had to support with fuel—at the time, it was about GH¢600. Imagine a parent who couldn’t afford this money—what would have happened to the baby?”
Lead Researcher Dr. Alexander Ansah Manu of the School of Public Health at the University of Ghana stressed the importance of prioritising research questions based on resource constraints and national health needs.

On concerns about implementing research findings, Dr. Manu expressed optimism, citing Ghana’s track record of integrating research-driven strategies into national policies.
“There are no guarantees that people will implement them, but as a country, we have adhered to many of the programs we’ve developed in the past.
“While some targets are not fully met, for most, we achieve 60-80% of the objectives. If these findings feed into national strategies, there is a higher likelihood of uptake and implementation, leading to the expected outcomes.”

Renowned legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has claimed that former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, excessively lobbied to be retained in office.
According to Kpebu, a source close to the presidency revealed that Dr. Dampare made persistent efforts to secure his position under President John Dramani Mahama.
He stated that the president felt harassed due to the overwhelming number of calls he received, urging him to retain the former IGP.
“Let me say this so that people can learn. My sources say Dampare overdid the lobbying, he went too far.
“I hear that everywhere the president went, many people were telling him, ‘Keep Dampare, keep Dampare.’ He went into overdrive. I understand the president felt harassed, he was overwhelmed,” Kpebu said.
The lawyer also suggested that the ongoing Supreme Court case, which challenges the president’s authority to remove heads of security agencies, is unlikely to reverse President Mahama’s decision to dismiss Dr. Dampare.
He explained that if the Supreme Court rules that IGPs and other security agency heads cannot be removed before their tenure ends, the ruling could impact future appointments rather than past decisions.
“When the Supreme Court delivers its interpretation, it will also decide whether the ruling applies prospectively or retrospectively. You remember the Domelevo case? By the time the ruling came, it was too late, the horses had already bolted, and Domelevo had retired.
“So it means that if a favorable ruling comes, it will most likely apply to future IGPs rather than reinstating past ones,” he explained.
Kpebu further emphasised that the IGP position is a security role, not one that operates with complete independence from the government.
“The IGP is a security position. Each president appoints their own IGP,” he added.
On March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama relieved Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of his duties.
He subsequently appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police.
A statement issued by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the appointment was made in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector General of Police.”

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has filed a lawsuit against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) following its decision to declare him wanted.
Ofori-Atta is seeking a court injunction to prevent the OSP from reissuing the declaration, which he claims is baseless and unjustified.
The legal action follows the OSP’s announcement earlier this year, labeling him a fugitive in connection with alleged corruption and financial misconduct.
The former minister has consistently denied the allegations, insisting that he has cooperated with the investigation through his legal representatives.
In his suit, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP’s actions have caused significant damage to his reputation and personal life.
He is asking the court to restrain the OSP from making any further declarations against him until the legal process is fully resolved.
Economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has made some bold statements regarding the unexpected removal of former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare by President John Mahama.

Accra, March 15, GNA – Dr Afua Ansare, UN Women Ghana, says the potential of youth in agribusiness is limitless, but they require access to finance, mentorship, market integration, and digital literacy.
She called on the government to commit to policies that dismantled these barriers and unleashed their entrepreneurial spirit.
Dr Ansare was speaking at the maiden edition of AgriBiz Youth & Women Dialogue (AYWD) on the theme: “Sustaining & Scaling Youth and Women-led Agribusiness for Economic Growth.”
The AYWD, an initiative of Africa Skills Hub Foundation (ASH) in partnership with National Youth Authority, is a platform for young people and women in agriculture and agribusiness to share experiences, tackle challenges, and explore opportunities.
This dialogue seeks to increase their voices, promote collaboration, and advocate for policies that enhance their participation in the sector.
The event was to identify key challenges young people and women face in agribusiness, and propose actionable solutions and explore emerging agribusiness opportunities, including innovative financing and technology.

to foster partnerships and collaboration among stakeholders.
She said as “we focus on women in agriculture, we must also acknowledge their critical role as caregivers and the impact of agricultural practices on the well-being of young children.”
Dr Ansare said women farmers were often responsible for ensuring household food security and nutrition and supporting them directly translated to healthier families and communities.
She said to achieve sustainable transformation in agribusiness, stakeholders must bridge the gender and youth gap through these key interventions:
She said studies demonstrated that if female farmers had equal access to productive resources, farm yields would increase by 20-30 per cent.
She said Ghana’s agricultural financing gap was estimated at $4 billion annually, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB) and “we must prioritize and scale up targeted credit facilities specifically for women and youth in agribusiness, offering favorable terms and conditions.”
She said in Rwanda, youth-led agribusiness innovations had already achieved a remarkable 15 per cent boost in agricultural productivity over the last five years, as reported by AfDB.
Dr Ansare said Ghana could emulate this success by strategically investing in agritech, mechanization, and climate-smart agriculture.
She said digital agriculture solutions had the potential to increase farm productivity by up to 70 per cent and reduce post-harvest losses by as much as 30 per cent, according to
the World Bank.
“Across Africa, young entrepreneurs are pioneering precision farming technologies, including drone-assisted irrigation and AI-driven soil analysis,” she added.
She urged governments, financial institutions, development partners, the private sector, civil society, and everyone to act decisively and collaboratively to support these group of people
She called for investment in women, empowering young people to build a future where agriculture was not simply a means of survival, but a thriving pathway to prosperity, innovation, and sustainable development for all Ghanaians.
“Together, let us cultivate a brighter future for Ghana’s agribusiness sector, transform lives, uplift communities, and leave a legacy of progress for generations to come,” she added.

The company states that all staff advancements have followed due process.
This comes after media reports suggested that recent management decisions, including the promotion of certain individuals within three months of their engagement, were causing discontent among employees.
Some workers alleged that these promotions were politically influenced.
However, in a statement, GACL management clarified that all promotions were conducted following established protocols, including departmental recommendations and panel evaluations involving representatives from the Public Services Commission and relevant professional associations.

We wish to address these claims and provide accurate information to the public. RESPONSE TO ALLEGATIONS 1. All promotions at GACL have been conducted in strict adherence to established protocols, including departmental recommendations and thorough evaluation by panels comprising no fewer than six members, including representatives from the Public Services Commission and appropriate professional associations. Interviews were conducted from May to July of 2024 and appointment letters were issued in August and September of 2024.
2. Ms. Felicia Edem Attipoe has not resumed post at GACL since January 2025, contrary to claims in the publication.
3. Mr. Gideon Grumah’s promotion to the position of Director, Commercial Services, was approved by the GACL Board in 2023, prior to the appointment of the current Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.
4. The allegation that individuals were elevated to top management positions after only three months of engagement is categorically false. Staff members who received promotions have served the company for extended periods, with many having remained at officer level for 15-20 years despite their contributions.

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) trained thousands of men to prevent any attempt to rig the 2024 elections. Speaking on TV 3, Martin Kpebu stated that this strategic move by the National Democratic Congress served as a strong deterrent, ensuring that no external force could manipulate the election results.
According to him, the NDC’s overwhelming victory—securing over 1.7 million votes more than its closest contender, the New Patriotic Party—left no room for rigging. He asserted that the then Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare had intelligence about the issue and was very much aware of the security preparation of the NDC, which made it difficult for any interference to take place.
“The National Democratic Congress trained a lot of men. They are being quiet about it, but they trained thousands of them. Dampare knew that the NDC had trained thousands of their men, and that was a huge deterrent” Martin Kpebu stated.

A tragic accident on the Apam-Mankessim Highway at Gomoa Assin has resulted in one fatality, with another person rescued after being extricated, according to the Central Region Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
In a statement posted on Facebook on Saturday, March 15, 2025, the GNFS reported that the Apam Fire Station responded quickly to the crash involving a Toyota Land Cruiser (GR 2544-25), a Toyota Sienta (AS 5853-19) and a Nissan Urvan (AS 3747-25).
“The fire rescuers extricated the Toyota Sienta driver, who was trapped and unconscious, and handed him over to the MTTD for transport to St. Luke Hospital, Apam, where he was pronounced dead,” the staement read.
“Eyewitnesses reported that the Cape Coast to Accra bound Toyota Land Cruiser, while overtaking, collided head-on with the Toyota Sienta before striking the Nissan Urvan. The Land Cruiser and Sienta were completely wrecked,” it added.

Kotei expressed grave concern over the fraudulent issuance of licenses, emphasizing that these activities pose a significant risk to road safety.
“Those who engage in these acts are endangering lives on the road, and I will ensure that they are removed and prosecuted,” he cautioned.

To curb such misconduct, Kotei announced that staff transfers would be enforced to prevent employees from forming deep-rooted relationships that enable malpractice.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring integrity within the DVLA.
“While some employees are dedicated to serving the country, others are only focused on making money through illegal means. This must stop. Any staff caught engaging in illegal licensing will face prosecution,” he warned.
Kotei assured the public that his leadership will prioritize transparency and accountability, ensuring that only qualified drivers are granted licenses through the proper procedures, ultimately improving road safety across the country.

“The Authority’s doors are open to all youth-related programmes and partnerships that seek to empower our young people,” he stated.
Highlighting the NYA’s ongoing efforts, Ayariga revealed that youth centres are currently being constructed across the country to serve as training and mentorship hubs.
He also announced that an upcoming initiative will focus on providing practical vocational and technical training, ensuring that participants acquire sustainable livelihood skills.
“This programme will offer hands-on training to prepare young people for real-world opportunities,” he added.
Ayariga further encouraged individuals willing to support the NYA’s initiatives by volunteering in mentorship programmes.
He stressed the vital role of guidance and support in shaping future leaders, urging experienced professionals and industry experts to contribute their expertise to youth development.

Accra, March 15, GNA – Prudential Bank has supported the Paediatric Department of the 37 Military Hospital with GH¢20,000 for the payment of medical bills of over 30 children.
The support was part of activities to show love and care to these children.
The bank’s delegation from the Marketing and Corporate Affairs Department, led by the Head of Public Relations, Mr Bennet Frimpong, also took the opportunity to present chocolates to the children and piggy banks to encourage savings among them.
Madam Jamilla Disu, Brand Manager at Prudential Bank, said that the Bank was passionate about giving back to society.
She said it was their belief that the gesture would go a long way to impact the lives of these children.
Dr. Sheila Asamoah Okyere, the Acting Head of the Paediatric Department, who received the items and cheque on behalf of the hospital, expressed the facility’s gratitude for the donation urging more support for the department in future.
“We are elated today for your benevolence. It is really a surprise to us, and we will make sure every child receives a gift,” she said.
She assured Management of the Bank that the funds would be used for the intended purpose for which it had been made.
“It is our plea that you make 37 Military Hospital a constant destination for these donations annually,” she added.
The West Africa operations of mining equipment giant, Sandvik Mining and Construction (Ghana) Limited has achieved a significant milestone of 10million work hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI).
Attained in February 2025, the outstanding achievement cements the company’s reputation as one with strong Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) credentials and culture.
Company managers say the milestone is evidence of the dedication and tireless effort of employees in ensuring that safety remains a top priority across all operations in Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali.
Lost Time Injury is an injury sustained in the course of work that results in the loss of productive work time for an employee(s). It is a measure of a company’s past safety performance.
According to Safeopedia, “Tracking lost time injuries provides safety departments and employers with a key indicator of the effectiveness of the organization’s safety program[me].”
This result “means the West Africa operations, with legal entities in Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso and physical presence in non-entity countries within the subregion have worked over 12 years or 400,000+ continuous days without an injury serious enough to warrant absence from work,” said a company executive.
Commenting on the achievement, Sandvik’s Vice President, Sales Area West Africa, Nuhu Salifu, said, “We have rebuilt hundreds of customer equipment and supported the mines without losing a day’s productive hours of any worker as a result of severe work-related injuries, thereby living our mantra of customer service with EHS focus”
Globally, mining operations expose workers – be they miners or working in support services – to high risk of serious injuries. This has often necessitated relentless safety campaigns and adherence to safety protocols. As part of such initiatives, Sandvik last year emphasized psychological safety by encouraging workers to freely express themselves without fear of victimization. The company also held mental health training and exercises to ensure a total wellbeing of workers within the SALES area.
Mr. Salifu said the ten million work hours LTI-Free milestone demonstrated the Sales Area’s commitment to preventing work-related injuries to its workers, after all it is a fact “that accidents do not just happen; they are caused and if they are caused, then they can be prevented. A Decade of Safety Excellence
The company said it last recorded LTI in 2012, it has continually improved its Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) standards by implementing stringent SHEQ management system and fostering a culture where every employee takes ownership of workplace safety.
As a result, in 2022, “we proudly celebrated our tenth year of being LTI-free, and today, we mark another major milestone that highlights our long-standing commitment to ensuring a safe and accident-free work environment,” the Vice-President noted.

Mr Salifu emphasized that, the attainment of ten million work hours LTI-free was not accidental but the result of a deliberate commitment and dedication by employees within the Sales Area.
“It is worth mentioning that leadership commitment is pivotal in the quests for a ‘Zero Harm’ work environment and our leaders are totally aligned with the ‘Zero Harm’ objective and prioritizes safety within their respective operations. Fortunately, the Sandvik Group and local management team are aligned in our commitment to drive improvement annually and every leader commits to this absolutely,” he stated.
He said the desire and determination to meet or exceed compliance obligations with corporate, regulatory and statutory requirements which involves commitment of resources to train workers yielded this dividend.
ISO management Certifications
To cap his comments, Mr Salifu noted that the established and effective management systems the company built had kept everyone on their feet.
“The journey towards ISO certification started in 2009 with OHSAS 18001:2007 which transformed into ISO 45001 in 2018. In 2019 Kumasi and Accra were certified ISO 45001,14001 and 9001. These certifications have kept us on the path of continual improvement.
“As a part of the Sandvik Group, where the core values and sustainability focus mandates us to be responsible corporate citizens and workers owe it to themselves to ensure personal safety and duty to care to each other and protect the environment, can only but remain compliant,” he stressed.

Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has defended President John Dramani Mahama following the dismissal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police (IGP).
According to him, the Constitution grants the President the authority to make changes within the security sector to ensure maximum protection for both himself and the citizens.
The Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese stated that he does not recall any instance in Ghana’s history where an IGP was dismissed for a specific reason, reinforcing President Mahama’s decision.
Speaking on The Key Points aired on TV3 on March 15, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu condemned the criticisms directed at President Mahama, arguing that his decision was lawful.
“The Constitution gives the President the power to appoint and dismiss. You don’t need to have committed any wrongdoing to be removed, and in fact, I don’t recall any IGP ever being dismissed for a specific offense. If there is such a record, I am happy to learn about it. Once a new president assumes office, it is generally expected that he will implement changes in the country’s leadership.
“Key state institutions, such as the security agencies including the police service should expect some changes in direction. I cannot even recall an IGP’s dismissal that sparked significant controversy because it has become an accepted practice,” he stated.
About the removal of Dr. Dampare
On March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama relieved Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, of his duties.
He subsequently appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police.
A statement issued by Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the appointment was made in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.
“He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read.
The High Court in Accra has officially acquitted and discharged Dr. Ernest Thompson, former Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), and two others of allegations related to causing financial loss in the $66 million SSNIT OBS project.
This decision follows the Office of the Attorney General’s notice to withdraw charges on February 7, 2025.
The three acquitted individuals are Dr. Ernest Thompson, former Director-General of SSNIT; John Hagan Mensah, former IT Manager at SSNIT; and Peter Hayibor, former General Manager and General Counsel of SSNIT.
They join Juliet Hassana Kramer, the CEO of Perfect Business Systems (PBS), who was previously set free by the Court during the submission of no case to answer.
They were all initially charged with a combined 29 counts related to the $66 million SSNIT OBS project, which was intended to revamp SSNIT’s operations through Information and Communications Technology (ICT), until the withdrawal was filed on February 7, 2025.
On February 20, 2025, Maame Efua Osei Gyamera, an Assistant State Attorney, informed the Court that, “pursuant to the Notice of Withdrawal filed on the 7th of February, 2025, and on the instructions of the Attorney General, I pray that the charges or offences against the 1st (Dr. Ernest Thompson), 2nd (Mr. John Hagan Mensah), and 5th (Mr. Peter Hayibor) accused persons are withdrawn pursuant to Sections 59 (1), (2) (b) (i) and (5) of Act 30. Humbly submitted.”
Counsel for Ernest Thompson, John Mensah Hagan, and Peter Hayibor did not object to the withdrawal notice by the Attorney General.
Acquittal
The presiding judge, Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie, a Justice of the Supreme Court sitting as an additional High Court judge, acquitted and discharged them.
“On the 7th of February, 2025, the Attorney General filed a Notice of Withdrawal of all offences against the 1st, 2nd, and 5th accused persons under Section 59 (1), (2), (b) (i) and (5) of the Criminal and Other Offences Procedure Act, 1960.
“The effect of this position, having regard to the fact that the prosecution has closed its case, is that by Section 59 (2), (b), (i), the accused persons ought to be acquitted in respect of the offences for which they are charged.
“Accordingly, the 1st, 2nd, and 5th accused persons (Dr. Ernest Thompson, John Mensah Hagan, and Peter Hayibor, respectively) are hereby acquitted and discharged in respect of Counts 17 and 18 of the charges,” the Court ruled.
EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, Murtala Inusah, reports that, as of the time the AG filed the notice of withdrawal on February 7, 2025, the Court had acquitted and discharged them on most of the 29 counts on December 3, 2024, except Count 17 – Conspiracy and Count 18 – Wilfully causing financial loss to the Republic contrary to Section 179(3) (a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Plea Bargaining
Meanwhile, on Thursday, March 13, the Court was informed that the 4th accused person, Caleb Kwaku Afaglo, a former Head of Management Information Systems, has submitted a request for Plea Bargaining.
He is facing seven counts, which include defrauding by false pretense and three counts each of possession of forged documents and uttering forged documents.
Defence lawyer George Bernard Shaw said, “The defence has commenced Plea Bargaining negotiations with the Attorney General.”
In light of that, “We are formally notifying this court of that course of action and pray that, in accordance with the Plea Bargaining Act, with Section 162(5), Your Lordship grants us the 30 days within which to conclude the plea negotiations,” Counsel informed the Court.
Confirmation
Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Adinkra confirmed to the Court that the Prosecution has received the proposal for negotiations and prayed for a 30-day adjournment to discuss the proposal.
“The Prosecution has received from the Counsel of the accused person a letter stating their intent to enter into Plea Bargaining with us.
“The right thing to do is to formally inform the Court of their intention to engage in Plea Bargaining, which I believe is what they have done this afternoon (Thursday, March 13). Subject to Your Lordship’s convenience, we request an adjournment not exceeding 30 days while we explore the possibility of reaching an agreement,” she said.
Justice Anthony Kwofie stated, “Having regard to the application made by Counsel for the accused and the response by the Prosecution, I will, in light of the Plea Bargaining Act, grant the accused person an adjournment to enable negotiations to proceed.”
The case, which initially included 29 counts related to the $66 million SSNIT OBS project, has been adjourned to May 8, 2025.
Background
The SSNIT OBS project aimed to revamp SSNIT’s operations through Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
However, the project’s contract sum allegedly ballooned from $34 million to $66 million, and the system failed to perform efficiently.
The Prosecution alleged that Thompson, Kramer, and Afaglo caused SSNIT to pay additional money for items already covered by the contract.
Brief facts
The facts leading to the institution of the criminal action were largely captured in the narration of the Attorney General to the Court after the plea of the accused persons was taken on May 20, 2021.
The material facts are as follows:
A1 was the Director-General of SSNIT between May 2013 and January 2017.
A2 was the Information Technology (IT) Infrastructure Manager of SSNIT until his appointment as the Operational Business Suite (OBS) Project Manager in December 2012.
A3 was the CEO of PBS.
A4 was the General Manager of MIS at SSNIT between October 2015 and January 2017.
A5 was the General Counsel of SSNIT.
In June 2010, SSNIT developed an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Strategic Plan to reflect changes in its operational processes and align with trends in the ICT industry.
The plan envisioned the development and implementation of a new software solution known as the Operational Business Suite (OBS) to provide a state-of-the-art pension administration system on a turnkey basis for SSNIT.
SSNIT advertised for international competitive bidding for the development and implementation of the project.
Although an entity known as Perfect Business Systems Limited (PBS) did not participate in the bidding, on November 15, 2012, the contract was awarded jointly to Silverlake, a Malaysian IT solutions provider, and PBS, purportedly as a consortium, at a contract sum of $34,011,914.21, inclusive of 14% contingency and 17% Value Added Tax.
The objective of the project was to automate all core processes in pension administration and integrate all internal systems as well as external stakeholders of SSNIT.
The contract, which covered the head office and 55 area and branch offices, was to be completed within 18 months.
Despite these provisions, payments were allegedly made for items already covered by the contract sum, inflating the cost to $66,783,148.08 through “Change Orders” and “Variations.”
Investigations revealed that PBS was a non-existent company and that the OBS system was not functioning efficiently despite the increased payments.

The US is expelling South Africa’s ambassador to Washington, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing him as a “race-baiting politician”.
In a post on X, Rubio accused Ebrahim Rasool of hating the US and President Donald Trump, and said the ambassador was “no longer welcome in our great country”.
The office of South Africa’s president on Saturday called the decision “regrettable”, adding that the country remained committed to building a mutually beneficial relationship with the US.
The rare move by the US marks the latest development in rising tensions between the two countries.
While lower-ranking diplomats are sometimes expelled, it’s highly unusual in the US for it to happen to a more senior official.
In his post on Friday, Rubio linked to an article from the right-wing outlet Breitbart that quoted some of Rasool’s recent remarks made during an online lecture about the Trump administration.
At the event, Rasool said Trump was “mobilising a supremacism” and trying to “project white victimhood as a dog whistle” as the white population faced becoming a minority in the US.
“We see it in the domestic politics of the USA, the Maga movement as a response not simply to a supremacist instinct, but to very clear data that shows great demographic shifts in the USA in which the voting electorate in the USA is projected to become 48% white,” he said.
He suggested that South Africa was under attack because “we are the historical antidote to supremacism”.
In response, Rubio called Rasool “PERSONA NON GRATA”, referencing the Latin phrase for “unwelcome person”.
Ties between the US and South Africa have been deteriorating since Trump took office.
An executive order last month – which froze US assistance to South Africa – cited “unjust racial discrimination” against white Afrikaners, largely descended from Dutch settlers who first arrived in the 17th Century.
It references a new law, the Expropriation Act, that it claims targets Afrikaners by allowing the government to take away private land.
“As long as South Africa continues to support bad actors on the world stage and allows violent attacks on innocent disfavoured minority farmers, the United States will stop aid and assistance to the country,” a statement from the White House said at the time.
South Africa’s 2022 census noted that white people – including Afrikaners – made up 7.2% of the population. However, according to a 2018 land audit by the South African government, white farmers owned 72% of the country’s individually-held farmland.
South Africa’s government, which is made up of 10 parties led by the African National Congress (ANC), said earlier that the US president’s actions were based on “a campaign of misinformation and propaganda aimed at misrepresenting our great nation”.
It added no land had been seized without compensation and said this would only happen in exceptional circumstances, such as if land was needed for public use and all other avenues to acquire the land had been exhausted.
A fact sheet from the White House states the country “blatantly discriminates against ethnic minority descendants of settler groups”.
Rasool – who previously served as US ambassador from 2010 to 2015 – was himself forcibly removed from his home in Cape Town’s District Six as a child after it was declared a white area under the Apartheid government.
He would later describe the eviction as a significant moment in his upbringing which guided his future.
Rasool became Pretoria’s ambassador to the US again in 2024.
